00:08:51.66\00:08:53.83 That is correct. 00:08:53.90\00:08:55.23 I was a carrier qualified Navy pilot 00:08:55.26\00:08:59.13 for the period of about four and half years. 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.30 It's certainly a tremendous experience 00:09:01.34\00:09:03.34 and I learned a lot from that, you know. 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.64 Probably share a bit more about that too 00:09:05.67\00:09:07.94 as the interview goes on. 00:09:07.98\00:09:09.31 Okay. 00:09:09.34\00:09:10.68 But yeah, quite an experience. 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.08 So you've taken off 00:09:12.11\00:09:13.45 and landed on an air craft career. 00:09:13.52\00:09:14.85 That is correct. 00:09:14.88\00:09:16.22 Did they stabilize the ocean to make it easier? 00:09:16.25\00:09:18.32 Oh, that would certainly be nice 00:09:18.35\00:09:19.82 but you know, you don't always get that privilege. 00:09:19.85\00:09:21.92 Wow, I've seen that 00:09:21.96\00:09:23.29 in outside of a nice, safe, flight simulator. 00:09:23.32\00:09:27.20 I haven't had that experience, 00:09:27.23\00:09:29.13 but so glad to have you here today. 00:09:29.16\00:09:30.50 David, give us a little brief history 00:09:30.57\00:09:31.90 of the program at Andrews. 00:09:31.93\00:09:33.57 How long has it been around? 00:09:33.64\00:09:34.97 What kind of impact has it had on the world? 00:09:35.00\00:09:37.11 Well, so Andrews has been around 00:09:37.14\00:09:38.54 since the early 1970s. 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.31 Right. 00:09:40.38\00:09:41.71 And for sort of flight program specifically. 00:09:41.74\00:09:44.58 Yeah. 00:09:44.61\00:09:45.95 And Andrews actually started out 00:09:45.98\00:09:48.35 as kind of the mission aviation hub 00:09:48.38\00:09:51.99 for the Adventist Church. 00:09:52.02\00:09:53.96 So from a span from roughly 1976 to 1979, 00:09:53.99\00:09:59.06 Andrews was involved 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.43 in putting out dozens of airplanes. 00:10:00.50\00:10:02.80 We have record of collaborating with Quiet Hour Ministries 00:10:02.83\00:10:07.54 to put out about 50 airplanes in that span of time. 00:10:07.57\00:10:12.91 And by the end of the 1970's 00:10:12.94\00:10:14.58 we had about 120 aircrafts worldwide serving 00:10:14.61\00:10:19.78 in mission positions of the world. 00:10:19.81\00:10:21.95 Wow, that's an interesting statistic 00:10:21.98\00:10:24.62 because when you think about a university, 00:10:24.65\00:10:26.99 well, you know, the other universities, 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.76 I'm sure that have flight programs 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.56 but that was a best kept secret. 00:10:30.63\00:10:32.89 I've been to Andrews many times. 00:10:32.93\00:10:35.40 I've seen the baseball field. 00:10:35.43\00:10:37.60 I've seen so much of the campus but I never knew 00:10:37.63\00:10:40.34 they were hiding a flight school 00:10:40.37\00:10:42.24 behind the little bakery. 00:10:42.27\00:10:44.44 No, it wasn't rare, 00:10:44.47\00:10:45.81 but it's a very interesting program. 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.38 And how long have you been involved in the program? 00:10:47.41\00:10:50.28 So I've been involved with the program 00:10:50.35\00:10:53.52 since early 2018. 00:10:53.55\00:10:56.32 Okay. 00:10:56.35\00:10:57.69 So I'm involved with it, 00:10:57.72\00:11:00.86 before that I was a mission pilot 00:11:00.89\00:11:02.99 in Chad, Africa. 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.46 And I actually came and do the program here 00:11:05.49\00:11:07.43 with 3ABN before talking about that project. 00:11:07.50\00:11:11.23 And now God has guided me and brought me to Andrews, 00:11:11.27\00:11:15.24 so it's a privilege to be involved with it. 00:11:15.27\00:11:17.74 Wow, that's wonderful. 00:11:17.77\00:11:19.11 And that's interesting to see 00:11:19.14\00:11:21.28 that the school offers that kind of curriculum. 00:11:21.31\00:11:25.05 How many students practically right, 00:11:25.08\00:11:27.12 Jonathan, do you know or even Jeremy, 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.15 what kind of student base do you have 00:11:29.18\00:11:31.09 that's interested in this kind of program? 00:11:31.12\00:11:32.45 At Andrews, we have a flight program 00:11:32.49\00:11:34.06 and a maintenance program. 00:11:34.09\00:11:35.42 So we've got about a dozen students 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.83 in the maintenance program 00:11:36.86\00:11:38.19 and about 30 or 40 students in the flight program. 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.10 And there any that do both programs? 00:11:40.13\00:11:42.06 Absolutely. 00:11:42.10\00:11:43.47 Okay, 'cause if you fly, 00:11:43.50\00:11:44.83 you want to know how your plane is working? 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.20 Yeah, so those that are interested, 00:11:46.23\00:11:47.77 we highly recommend having both 00:11:47.80\00:11:49.54 and then you're well rounded, 00:11:49.57\00:11:51.74 complete individual ready for the industry. 00:11:51.77\00:11:54.61 That's good and... 00:11:54.64\00:11:56.88 We have scholarships for those that choose to do both, 00:11:56.95\00:11:59.38 just because we encourage it so much. 00:11:59.41\00:12:01.32 That's right. 00:12:01.35\00:12:02.68 I like that because it does cost. 00:12:02.72\00:12:04.65 It's not like a regular curriculum. 00:12:04.69\00:12:06.62 Just give us... 00:12:06.65\00:12:07.99 And we're gonna talk about 00:12:08.02\00:12:09.36 some of the funding and scholarships 00:12:09.39\00:12:10.73 that can go along with helping this kind of program go on. 00:12:10.76\00:12:12.86 But just give us an idea of what it cost like 00:12:12.89\00:12:14.66 that a four year program for a flight 00:12:14.70\00:12:17.07 including flight hours and use of the plane generally? 00:12:17.10\00:12:20.74 So, in general terms right now 00:12:20.77\00:12:23.00 we're sitting at about the cost of tuition 00:12:23.04\00:12:25.44 for Andrews plus $65,000 00:12:25.47\00:12:29.28 and that brings you from zero experience 00:12:29.31\00:12:32.21 all the way until you can start teaching other people 00:12:32.25\00:12:34.52 how to fly an aircraft. 00:12:34.55\00:12:35.88 That's good because that's what you wanna be able to good. 00:12:35.92\00:12:37.82 That's right. 00:12:37.85\00:12:39.19 And that includes flight experience, 00:12:39.22\00:12:40.76 landing and takeoff? 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.12 Flight experience, land and take off 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.96 and everything in between. 00:12:44.03\00:12:45.43 Yep, we even train you 00:12:45.46\00:12:46.80 into how to fly in a crew type environment, 00:12:46.83\00:12:50.77 preparing you for the airlines. 00:12:50.80\00:12:53.03 And we have a letter of authorization 00:12:53.07\00:12:56.81 from the FAA that allows our graduates 00:12:56.84\00:13:00.08 to go to the airlines in a 1000 hours 00:13:00.11\00:13:05.25 rather than 1500 00:13:05.28\00:13:06.61 which is the current regular requirement 00:13:06.65\00:13:08.68 before anybody going through flight training. 00:13:08.72\00:13:11.92 So that's saying that the training is very extensive. 00:13:11.95\00:13:14.79 Yeah, because of the airplanes that we have, 00:13:14.82\00:13:17.23 because of our maintenance, 00:13:17.26\00:13:18.59 because of our teachers, because of our curriculum, 00:13:18.63\00:13:21.10 all of that comes together in a complete package 00:13:21.13\00:13:24.07 and because it's more complete and more thorough 00:13:24.10\00:13:27.07 than just going and flying your own airplane for 1500 hours. 00:13:27.14\00:13:30.31 The FAA says that you get better training, 00:13:30.34\00:13:32.11 if you come through our curriculum. 00:13:32.14\00:13:34.18 Did you hear that? 00:13:34.21\00:13:35.54 Better training flight instruction 00:13:35.58\00:13:38.08 as well as maintenance at Andrews University. 00:13:38.11\00:13:40.72 When you talk about 500 hours less 00:13:40.75\00:13:44.29 by going through this program, that's cost effective. 00:13:44.32\00:13:47.36 That's right. And that's a lot. 00:13:47.39\00:13:48.92 I mean, that 500 hours is 500 hours. 00:13:48.96\00:13:50.66 When you talk about running a plane 00:13:50.73\00:13:52.26 to get 500 hours 00:13:52.29\00:13:53.63 or going to get 500 hours training 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.03 or whatever the case may be, when you put that together, 00:13:55.06\00:13:57.07 'cause you've been on an aircraft carrier, 00:13:57.10\00:13:59.10 talk about the maintenance? 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.54 I mean, you're talking about the United States Navy, 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.81 those guys that when that plane takes off, 00:14:03.84\00:14:06.34 how critical is the maintenance of an airplane? 00:14:06.37\00:14:09.64 Oh, it's incredibly critical. 00:14:09.68\00:14:12.25 The components, they just, 00:14:12.28\00:14:15.08 they really can't fail, you know, 00:14:15.12\00:14:17.49 they have to work yeah 00:14:17.52\00:14:19.32 'cause otherwise you're gonna find yourself 00:14:19.35\00:14:21.29 going for a swim 00:14:21.32\00:14:22.79 or having to unfortunately punch out 00:14:22.82\00:14:25.33 which is not a funniest aspect to flying. 00:14:25.36\00:14:28.20 Right. Yeah. 00:14:28.23\00:14:29.56 And punch out is not a physical act but... 00:14:29.60\00:14:30.97 No, I'm sorry, eject out of the airplane. 00:14:31.00\00:14:32.37 Right, eject, okay, good. 00:14:32.40\00:14:33.84 I want to clarify that 'cause I knew what you meant. 00:14:33.87\00:14:35.60 But, you know, somebody might say, 00:14:35.64\00:14:37.21 why would they hit the fight instructor... 00:14:37.24\00:14:39.54 You can't exactly pull off on the side of the road 00:14:39.57\00:14:41.54 and fix your broken tire. 00:14:41.58\00:14:43.04 You've got to know 00:14:43.08\00:14:44.41 how to handle everything that comes. 00:14:44.45\00:14:45.78 That's right. 00:14:45.81\00:14:47.15 So you are very particular, 00:14:47.22\00:14:48.62 Jonathan, about what you approve? 00:14:48.65\00:14:50.79 That's right. Yeah. 00:14:50.82\00:14:52.19 So at the end of my inspections, 00:14:52.22\00:14:54.16 I have a log book entry 00:14:54.19\00:14:55.52 and I put my name on it and if something happens, 00:14:55.56\00:14:57.23 the FAA is coming and asking me questions. 00:14:57.26\00:14:59.93 So yeah, I mean, everything I do, 00:15:00.00\00:15:01.63 I have to be very particular 00:15:01.66\00:15:03.00 and very specific about to make sure 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.37 that it's 100% top notch ready to go every time. 00:15:04.40\00:15:06.50 Yeah. 00:15:06.53\00:15:07.87 And the reason I'm approaching this 00:15:07.90\00:15:09.60 so early in the program is this that, 00:15:09.64\00:15:12.04 you know, you hear about accidents, 00:15:12.07\00:15:13.98 whether it's a single engine plane, 00:15:14.01\00:15:15.78 or whether it's a commercial jet, 00:15:15.81\00:15:17.25 FAA is involved at every level. 00:15:17.28\00:15:18.68 Yes. That's right. 00:15:18.71\00:15:20.05 They'll see what happened. 00:15:20.12\00:15:21.45 Like I heard about some planes that it collided in Alaska and, 00:15:21.48\00:15:26.32 you know, the unfortunate incident there 00:15:26.35\00:15:29.09 that which is pretty commercial, 00:15:29.12\00:15:30.83 taking people to see the mountains 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.19 and the things in. 00:15:32.23\00:15:33.73 And so those small little details 00:15:33.80\00:15:36.67 is the difference between life and death. 00:15:36.70\00:15:39.97 So there's nothing that you can overlook? 00:15:40.04\00:15:41.37 Yep. 00:15:41.40\00:15:42.74 So we've got, one of our airplanes 00:15:42.77\00:15:44.11 is from 1959 and it's still flying 00:15:44.14\00:15:46.61 because we do maintenance. 00:15:46.68\00:15:48.51 I mean, how many cars are on the road from 1959? 00:15:48.54\00:15:50.85 That's true. 00:15:50.88\00:15:52.21 But we just inspect them all the time and make sure 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.32 that they're all up and if anything is, 00:15:54.35\00:15:56.38 is even looking like it's starting to go, 00:15:56.42\00:15:58.22 we replace it and make sure it's safe. 00:15:58.25\00:16:00.86 Yeah, and I'm a little bit more detailed 00:16:00.89\00:16:02.56 in flight than many of the regular talk show hosts. 00:16:02.59\00:16:05.79 Because I like to fly too 00:16:05.83\00:16:07.40 but do not ask me to fly you in my plane, 00:16:07.43\00:16:09.53 I don't have one unless you wanna be 00:16:09.56\00:16:10.90 in a model airplane. 00:16:10.97\00:16:12.30 But so you know about the field, 00:16:12.33\00:16:14.70 like how long this piece of equipment 00:16:14.74\00:16:16.40 should be in a plane, it shouldn't go 00:16:16.44\00:16:17.77 beyond these hours and all that kind of thing? 00:16:17.81\00:16:19.37 Yeah. Good, good. 00:16:19.41\00:16:20.88 But now give us some more, 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.88 talk about some of your missions, 00:16:22.91\00:16:24.58 because each one of you 00:16:24.61\00:16:26.82 has been involved in some type of mission. 00:16:26.85\00:16:28.88 Talk about some of these missions 00:16:28.92\00:16:30.29 that you've been involved in? 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.32 Well, you know, the interesting thing 00:16:32.35\00:16:34.62 about being a pilot is 00:16:34.66\00:16:38.96 we happen to have a very unique perspective 00:16:38.99\00:16:41.03 being in the air. 00:16:41.06\00:16:42.40 And also, just as it happens to be 00:16:42.43\00:16:45.37 in Revelation 14:6 talks about, 00:16:45.40\00:16:47.34 "I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, 00:16:47.37\00:16:50.01 proclaiming the gospel to those that dwell upon the earth." 00:16:50.04\00:16:52.37 And so like you said, we may not be angels, 00:16:52.41\00:16:54.84 but we do have the opportunity to spread the gospel 00:16:54.88\00:16:57.38 and we can use flight to do that. 00:16:57.45\00:16:59.61 There is a man by the name of Dick Hall, 00:16:59.65\00:17:02.45 he took that very seriously. 00:17:02.48\00:17:04.65 Back in 1957, 00:17:04.69\00:17:06.02 he was a pastor missionary to... 00:17:06.05\00:17:10.53 I think it was the Hmong people in the country of Laos. 00:17:10.56\00:17:14.00 He helped them build the church there. 00:17:14.03\00:17:16.03 It was actually the first Adventist presence 00:17:16.06\00:17:18.77 in that country. 00:17:18.80\00:17:20.17 And because of his energy, 00:17:20.24\00:17:22.67 effort he put forth their people, 00:17:22.70\00:17:24.71 I mean, a whole nation group in fact, 00:17:24.74\00:17:27.21 in the Adventist Church 00:17:27.28\00:17:28.61 who would not have been 00:17:28.64\00:17:29.98 had he not been able to do that, 00:17:30.01\00:17:31.35 it was all because he was able to fly, 00:17:31.38\00:17:32.71 which is pretty awesome. 00:17:32.75\00:17:34.12 And it shows how important it can be for us. 00:17:34.15\00:17:36.28 And this also, it also has an impact to you too, 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.85 because you had somewhat of a conversion experience 00:17:38.89\00:17:42.66 when you were involved in the Navy, 00:17:42.69\00:17:44.69 tell us about that? 00:17:44.73\00:17:46.33 Well, very, I'll try to keep it as short as possible, 00:17:46.36\00:17:50.57 but I did have a conversion experience 00:17:50.60\00:17:52.83 and I'd always been searching, trying to learn Bible truth 00:17:52.87\00:17:57.41 and I've been to several different churches. 00:17:57.44\00:17:59.91 You know, I won't name denominations, 00:17:59.94\00:18:02.08 but I wasn't afraid to ask questions 00:18:02.11\00:18:05.01 and so that's what I did. 00:18:05.05\00:18:06.55 And as I read the Bible, 00:18:06.58\00:18:08.28 I kept on seeing things about the Sabbath. 00:18:08.32\00:18:10.32 You know, I was like, 00:18:10.39\00:18:11.72 well, I think that's more of a legalistic thing 00:18:11.75\00:18:14.16 that doesn't apply to us now. 00:18:14.19\00:18:15.56 And I asked my pastors, I got like, 00:18:15.59\00:18:18.03 three different answers from all of them. 00:18:18.06\00:18:19.86 And so I decided, 00:18:19.89\00:18:21.23 well, I'm just going to research myself, 00:18:21.26\00:18:22.60 it can't hurt me, you know, 00:18:22.63\00:18:23.97 I'm supposed to know the Bible for myself. 00:18:24.00\00:18:25.80 And so I did. 00:18:25.83\00:18:27.17 And the more I read the Bible, 00:18:27.24\00:18:28.94 the more I realized 00:18:28.97\00:18:30.41 that perhaps I wasn't as right as I thought I was 00:18:30.44\00:18:33.27 that the Bible actually talks about the Sabbath 00:18:33.31\00:18:36.68 and the Sabbath still applies today. 00:18:36.75\00:18:38.88 And that just changed my perspective 00:18:38.91\00:18:42.05 on things actually. 00:18:42.08\00:18:43.89 And, in fact, while I was in the Navy, 00:18:43.92\00:18:47.06 I would have to say that, 00:18:47.09\00:18:48.69 it probably led me to desire a different lifestyle 00:18:48.72\00:18:52.49 than I had then 00:18:52.53\00:18:54.13 and according to my own personal convictions, 00:18:54.20\00:18:57.83 I felt that it was time for me to go elsewhere 00:18:57.87\00:19:00.44 and God miraculously worked it out 00:19:00.47\00:19:02.67 so that I could do that 00:19:02.70\00:19:04.04 and actually learn and submit my faith more 00:19:04.11\00:19:07.01 and that's beautiful. 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.41 Yeah. That was interesting. 00:19:08.44\00:19:09.78 And that was as you are transitioning 00:19:09.81\00:19:11.15 out of the military... 00:19:11.18\00:19:12.51 Correct. 00:19:12.55\00:19:13.88 Because the Lord had another direction for you... 00:19:13.92\00:19:15.25 He did. 00:19:15.28\00:19:16.62 That you were not aware of but, 00:19:16.65\00:19:17.99 you know, those little taps on the heart's door 00:19:18.02\00:19:20.46 made a difference. 00:19:20.49\00:19:21.82 He sort of speak navigated you. 00:19:21.86\00:19:23.83 He did. 00:19:23.86\00:19:25.19 He became the lead pilot. 00:19:25.23\00:19:30.00 He was the lead pilot, I was his wingman, yeah. 00:19:30.07\00:19:33.23 Wow, that's interesting, but now, 00:19:33.27\00:19:35.57 you talked about missions. 00:19:35.60\00:19:37.97 Share some more about missions, 00:19:38.01\00:19:39.34 because missions could be in various parts of the world 00:19:39.37\00:19:44.08 but in various aspects, 00:19:44.15\00:19:45.85 and how does flight play a role in missions? 00:19:45.88\00:19:48.85 Well, I think one of the big things 00:19:48.88\00:19:50.59 with flight and missions, you know, 00:19:50.62\00:19:52.95 you think about the quintessential mission pilot 00:19:52.99\00:19:57.43 who's flying into these remote unimproved strips, 00:19:57.46\00:20:01.33 and drop it off Bible workers 00:20:01.36\00:20:03.16 or construction materials 00:20:03.20\00:20:04.53 to build a church and stuff like that. 00:20:04.57\00:20:06.74 And that is definitely a very necessary part. 00:20:06.77\00:20:11.97 But being a mission pilot, 00:20:12.01\00:20:14.34 you also have the opportunity to reach others 00:20:14.38\00:20:17.15 who may not necessarily 00:20:17.18\00:20:19.81 have the contact that you would need. 00:20:19.85\00:20:22.15 For instance, you're meeting with 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.69 the civil aviation authorities in that country. 00:20:23.72\00:20:28.06 You're meeting with other missionary families. 00:20:28.09\00:20:31.33 So one story that I have from that is, 00:20:31.36\00:20:35.03 I was working. 00:20:35.06\00:20:36.40 When I was in Africa, 00:20:36.43\00:20:37.77 I had the opportunity 00:20:37.80\00:20:39.13 to share an understanding of the state of the dead 00:20:39.17\00:20:44.24 with another missionary, mission pilot who was there. 00:20:44.31\00:20:49.14 He was working with one of the evangelical groups. 00:20:49.18\00:20:52.08 And, you know, God sorted it out 00:20:52.11\00:20:56.69 so that we were able to talk about this subject. 00:20:56.72\00:21:00.99 And, you know, we just opened up a discussion 00:21:01.02\00:21:03.73 and we're like, okay, so do you believe this? 00:21:03.76\00:21:07.10 Why do you believe that? 00:21:07.13\00:21:08.63 And well, you know, 00:21:08.66\00:21:10.00 I was able to sit down with him 00:21:10.07\00:21:11.40 and have lunch and talk through it. 00:21:11.43\00:21:13.64 And we were saying, you know, like, 00:21:13.67\00:21:18.37 how can the soul be eternal? 00:21:18.41\00:21:21.11 It says in eternally burning fire, 00:21:21.14\00:21:22.78 but fire can only burn 00:21:22.81\00:21:24.25 as long as there's wood to burn. 00:21:24.28\00:21:26.35 That's right. 00:21:26.38\00:21:27.72 And so bringing these truths and these principles, 00:21:27.75\00:21:30.19 I was being able to reach him at a spot 00:21:30.22\00:21:34.06 where he was supposed to be serving 00:21:34.09\00:21:35.59 and he was supposed to be ministering, 00:21:35.62\00:21:37.96 but God gave me that opportunity to reach him, 00:21:37.99\00:21:43.13 and I don't think anybody else 00:21:43.16\00:21:44.50 would have been able to reach him 00:21:44.53\00:21:45.87 in the same way and that's a moment. 00:21:45.90\00:21:47.24 Right because you being a pilot, 00:21:47.27\00:21:49.04 him being also involved in the same thing... 00:21:49.07\00:21:50.81 That's right. 00:21:50.84\00:21:52.17 Brought you to a point an intersection that is, 00:21:52.21\00:21:54.51 that's really good and it makes a difference, 00:21:54.54\00:21:57.65 what people believe in. 00:21:57.68\00:21:59.01 I think about flight in this respect 00:21:59.05\00:22:01.02 and if you compare flight and spirituality 00:22:01.05\00:22:03.79 or the Bible together, details matter. 00:22:03.82\00:22:06.99 Jonathan, do details matter? 00:22:07.06\00:22:08.56 Absolutely. Okay. 00:22:08.59\00:22:10.93 That's a small detail. 00:22:10.96\00:22:12.89 It's just a small crack. 00:22:12.93\00:22:15.46 Not a big issue right now, it'd be okay, 00:22:15.50\00:22:18.17 use for maybe 10 or 12 more flights. 00:22:18.20\00:22:20.14 I mean, who knows? 00:22:20.17\00:22:22.30 Details matter. Details matter. 00:22:22.34\00:22:24.11 They make a difference. 00:22:24.14\00:22:25.47 But you also had an experience to touch a person's life 00:22:25.51\00:22:31.25 when an unfortunate experience happened with somebody 00:22:31.28\00:22:33.82 that you were able to get in touch with, 00:22:33.85\00:22:35.48 talk about that? 00:22:35.52\00:22:36.89 So the Lord has blessed me 00:22:36.92\00:22:38.25 in a lot of my ministering opportunities 00:22:38.29\00:22:40.36 have been more friendship evangelism. 00:22:40.39\00:22:42.86 And so right after I got out of AMP school, 00:22:42.89\00:22:44.63 I was in a shop 00:22:44.66\00:22:45.99 where we were painting airplanes, 00:22:46.03\00:22:47.40 and one of my co-workers, 00:22:47.43\00:22:48.90 I was there for about a year and a half 00:22:48.93\00:22:50.27 and it was a secular shop. 00:22:50.30\00:22:52.37 And you know, 00:22:52.40\00:22:53.74 being a Christian in secular shop, 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.10 it was difficult in a lot of circumstances, 00:22:55.14\00:22:57.14 but, you know, 00:22:57.21\00:22:58.54 I chose to remain faithful and my conversation 00:22:58.57\00:23:00.98 and the way I interacted with my co-workers 00:23:01.01\00:23:03.04 was very intentional. 00:23:03.08\00:23:04.78 And so while I was there, 00:23:04.81\00:23:06.25 one of my co-workers, his daughter was born, 00:23:06.28\00:23:07.95 but she was born with a heart defect. 00:23:07.98\00:23:10.32 And a couple of months later, she went away. 00:23:10.39\00:23:11.95 She passed away, that's very unfortunate. 00:23:11.99\00:23:14.29 But that night, when she passed away, 00:23:14.32\00:23:16.09 my co-worker called me. 00:23:16.12\00:23:18.63 And I was the person 00:23:18.66\00:23:21.13 that he called in the middle of the night 00:23:21.16\00:23:22.80 when he needed this help. 00:23:22.83\00:23:24.17 Wow. 00:23:24.20\00:23:25.53 And so I spent some time with him on the phone 00:23:25.57\00:23:27.07 and prayed with him. 00:23:27.14\00:23:28.47 And it's very touching too, 00:23:28.50\00:23:31.04 even though being in a secular environment, 00:23:31.07\00:23:33.68 to have that connection 00:23:33.71\00:23:35.04 where I didn't realize what was going on. 00:23:35.08\00:23:37.05 But when he knew that he needed some help, 00:23:37.08\00:23:40.45 I was his friend that he called. 00:23:40.52\00:23:42.78 That's right, maintaining your faith... 00:23:42.82\00:23:44.19 Yeah. 00:23:44.22\00:23:45.55 Where it might be easy to compromise 00:23:45.59\00:23:46.92 because everybody around you wouldn't even fight the idea 00:23:46.96\00:23:49.56 that hey, you know, Jonathan, let's hang out. 00:23:49.59\00:23:51.76 Let's have a couple of drinks. 00:23:51.79\00:23:53.13 Let's just go out and do whatever. 00:23:53.16\00:23:54.60 And you maintain your faith 00:23:54.63\00:23:55.96 so that when the critical hour came, 00:23:56.00\00:23:58.00 somebody knew who to call perhaps after that. 00:23:58.03\00:23:59.80 Yeah. You know that kind of... 00:23:59.83\00:24:01.64 I know you were in challenging environment also, 00:24:01.67\00:24:04.01 but at the time that you were in Navy, 00:24:04.04\00:24:06.68 at what point did your spirituality 00:24:06.71\00:24:08.34 begin to kick in and you're searching? 00:24:08.38\00:24:11.51 Great question. 00:24:11.55\00:24:12.88 So God has, 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.25 He has many ways of working with us. 00:24:14.32\00:24:16.18 And, of course, he knows us very well. 00:24:16.22\00:24:19.62 I would unfortunately consider myself pretty hardheaded. 00:24:19.65\00:24:23.09 And so, you know, 00:24:23.12\00:24:25.56 just in my normal thought process, 00:24:25.59\00:24:28.06 normal way of doing things, I just thought, well, you know, 00:24:28.10\00:24:32.23 I'm learning these new truths, 00:24:32.27\00:24:33.64 but I've already made my commitment here. 00:24:33.67\00:24:36.24 And so I'm, 00:24:36.27\00:24:37.61 perhaps I might have to do things 00:24:37.64\00:24:39.04 that are going against the Bible, 00:24:39.07\00:24:40.81 but I have to honor my commitment 00:24:40.88\00:24:42.21 that I already made. 00:24:42.24\00:24:43.58 If I said, I'm going to do it, I need to follow it through. 00:24:43.61\00:24:45.35 But as it so happened, I injured myself, 00:24:45.38\00:24:49.05 unfortunately, doing some exercises, 00:24:49.08\00:24:51.29 and during that time, 00:24:51.32\00:24:52.65 God just really spoke to my heart. 00:24:52.69\00:24:54.62 I wasn't flying. 00:24:54.66\00:24:55.99 I had more time to read and understand 00:24:56.02\00:24:57.69 and study Bible truths 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.89 and he happened to take me to a church 00:24:59.93\00:25:02.40 that was very nurturing. 00:25:02.43\00:25:04.00 And so by the time, 00:25:04.07\00:25:06.23 everything was all said and done, 00:25:06.27\00:25:07.87 I was so much more solid in my faith. 00:25:07.90\00:25:10.41 And, you know, it was certainly challenging 00:25:10.44\00:25:14.61 because let's just say 00:25:14.64\00:25:17.68 that people weren't very supportive of my conversion. 00:25:17.71\00:25:21.52 How about that? 00:25:21.55\00:25:22.88 And in the military, 00:25:22.92\00:25:24.45 even if you do want to stand for what you believe in, 00:25:24.49\00:25:27.46 the mission comes first. 00:25:27.49\00:25:28.82 Wow, that's right. 00:25:28.86\00:25:30.23 You know, I mean, that's just the way it is. 00:25:30.26\00:25:31.96 And especially because we're a volunteer military right now, 00:25:31.99\00:25:35.50 you know, you have to keep that in mind. 00:25:35.53\00:25:38.07 And so it was very challenging, 00:25:38.10\00:25:41.07 but God also used me to be able to be a witness to some people. 00:25:41.10\00:25:43.81 Okay. 00:25:43.84\00:25:45.17 I've given those moments when I was struggling, 00:25:45.21\00:25:47.01 which was pretty awesome. 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.01 He could still find, you know, 00:25:49.04\00:25:51.08 whether you are a full burning fire or a coal. 00:25:51.11\00:25:56.25 There's still a flame there. 00:25:56.28\00:25:57.79 Yeah. And that's a beautiful thing. 00:25:57.82\00:25:59.15 There's some light coming. 00:25:59.19\00:26:00.56 Now what I want to kind of show this video we have, 00:26:00.59\00:26:03.12 because we brought some footage here 00:26:03.16\00:26:05.06 to kind of give some people an idea. 00:26:05.09\00:26:07.00 And after the video we'll comment on what they saw. 00:26:07.03\00:26:09.56 Let's roll the video right now. 00:26:09.60\00:26:11.50 I could just say the word nice, that's nice. 00:27:55.17\00:27:58.77 You want to be able to take off. 00:27:58.81\00:28:00.18 Were you involved in the maintenance 00:28:00.21\00:28:01.54 of that craft also? 00:28:01.58\00:28:02.91 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:28:02.94\00:28:04.28 So that was the... 00:28:04.31\00:28:05.65 The end number on that is 27 alpha uniform. 00:28:05.68\00:28:07.32 It's a new airplane that we just purchased in 2014. 00:28:07.35\00:28:09.82 Okay. 00:28:09.85\00:28:11.19 And as you notice it had the glass cockpit. 00:28:11.22\00:28:12.55 It's got the G1000 avionics in it. 00:28:12.59\00:28:14.36 So the older aircrafts have the round steam gauges 00:28:14.39\00:28:17.43 as what we call them. 00:28:17.46\00:28:18.93 But the newer ones are the glass cockpit. 00:28:18.96\00:28:20.33 Nice. 00:28:20.40\00:28:21.73 But then you have secondary instruments? 00:28:21.76\00:28:23.10 Yeah, we've got secondary instrument on the side. 00:28:23.13\00:28:25.00 So it's brand new cutting-edge technology type stuff. 00:28:25.03\00:28:27.74 Yeah. 00:28:27.77\00:28:29.10 Well, have either of you driven or flown an airplane? 00:28:29.14\00:28:31.57 Yeah. We fly in them regularly. Yeah. 00:28:31.61\00:28:33.61 I also want to show this picture we have 00:28:33.68\00:28:35.28 because you guys flew down here. 00:28:35.31\00:28:37.68 You know, most of our guests drive here. 00:28:37.71\00:28:40.52 They did drive from the airport here, 00:28:40.55\00:28:41.88 but I want to show this plane 00:28:41.92\00:28:43.25 and let's talk about that plane, 00:28:43.28\00:28:44.62 the nice plane that we have. 00:28:44.65\00:28:46.32 This is a Piper Arrow. 00:28:46.35\00:28:48.22 It's got retractable gear. 00:28:48.26\00:28:50.06 And this is what we flew down on yesterday. 00:28:50.13\00:28:51.86 Nice. 00:28:51.89\00:28:53.23 And does this have the glass cockpit? 00:28:53.26\00:28:54.60 This is an older airplane. 00:28:54.63\00:28:55.96 This is from 1974. Okay. 00:28:56.00\00:28:58.30 But it's got the same paint job as what we currently have. 00:28:58.33\00:29:00.54 Talk about this picture here briefly? 00:29:00.57\00:29:02.17 So this was an airplane that was donated 00:29:02.20\00:29:04.34 about a year and a half ago, it was down in Tennessee. 00:29:04.37\00:29:07.28 And we took about 10 students down 00:29:07.31\00:29:09.74 to Tennessee over the weekend 00:29:09.78\00:29:11.11 and we took that airplane apart, 00:29:11.15\00:29:12.48 took the wings off of it, 00:29:12.51\00:29:13.85 took the horizontal stabilizer off it, 00:29:13.92\00:29:15.25 put on a semi-truck trailer 00:29:15.28\00:29:16.62 and drove it back up to Andrews. 00:29:16.65\00:29:17.99 What kind of plane is this? 00:29:18.02\00:29:19.35 This is Leo 25 jet. 00:29:19.39\00:29:22.06 Holds about six or eight people. 00:29:22.09\00:29:23.83 Wow. Wonderful. 00:29:23.86\00:29:25.53 That's nice to be able to, 00:29:25.56\00:29:27.73 "Hey, let's go for a flight today." 00:29:27.76\00:29:29.73 It's very convenient. Very convenient. 00:29:29.76\00:29:32.00 How much flying is a part of the program? 00:29:32.03\00:29:36.71 Let me rephrase the question. 00:29:36.74\00:29:38.44 What interval does the student transition 00:29:38.47\00:29:40.88 from book to the equipment? 00:29:40.91\00:29:43.45 Right away. Right away. 00:29:43.48\00:29:44.85 Right away. 00:29:44.88\00:29:46.21 Yeah, we found that if you try to teach theory 00:29:46.25\00:29:49.02 without the practical application, 00:29:49.05\00:29:51.19 it just goes in one ear and out the other. 00:29:51.22\00:29:53.46 People don't really understand it. 00:29:53.49\00:29:55.36 So we strive to get people, 00:29:55.39\00:29:57.79 our students in the airplane as soon as possible 00:29:57.83\00:30:00.70 so that they're marrying the two together, 00:30:00.73\00:30:04.07 the theory of aerodynamics 00:30:04.10\00:30:06.67 and whatever else with the practical application, 00:30:06.74\00:30:10.64 and so they come together 00:30:10.71\00:30:12.14 and it makes a more holistic pilot out of it. 00:30:12.17\00:30:14.71 That makes sense 00:30:14.74\00:30:16.08 because if you're teaching somebody art, 00:30:16.11\00:30:17.45 you could teach them the history, 00:30:17.48\00:30:18.81 you could talk about all the various artists 00:30:18.85\00:30:20.22 with the 17th century, the different types of art. 00:30:20.25\00:30:23.32 But if they never pick up a paintbrush or a pencil, 00:30:23.39\00:30:26.12 he's like, we're just learning about art, 00:30:26.15\00:30:28.52 but I've never drawn anything yet. 00:30:28.56\00:30:29.89 Right. That's true. 00:30:29.92\00:30:31.26 That makes sense. That makes sense. 00:30:31.29\00:30:32.99 I mean, I like pertaining to flight. 00:30:33.03\00:30:37.97 I'm not a flight instructor. I'm not a pilot. 00:30:38.00\00:30:40.97 But I'm very interested in the fact that 00:30:41.00\00:30:44.31 when you talk about this kind of program, 00:30:44.34\00:30:46.88 it's not just something that's for overseas. 00:30:46.91\00:30:49.41 Talk about some of the local benefits 00:30:49.44\00:30:52.35 of having the gift of flying in local missions? 00:30:52.38\00:30:56.22 Well, so one of the big things 00:30:56.25\00:30:58.12 is that the aviation industry here in the US 00:30:58.15\00:31:02.99 is very secular and unreached. 00:31:03.02\00:31:08.10 Typically, because it's a 24x7 job. 00:31:08.13\00:31:10.90 Right. 00:31:10.97\00:31:12.30 And so people are running constantly, 00:31:12.33\00:31:13.84 you know whether they're going to get 00:31:13.87\00:31:15.20 Sunday or Saturdays off to go to church, 00:31:15.24\00:31:17.11 it's not a guarantee. 00:31:17.14\00:31:19.91 And so there's close 00:31:19.94\00:31:22.91 to 1 million aviation professionals, 00:31:22.94\00:31:26.21 whether they're pilots, mechanics, 00:31:26.25\00:31:27.95 dispatchers for the airlines. 00:31:27.98\00:31:30.09 And I'd say, based on what I've understood 00:31:30.12\00:31:34.52 and learned throughout the industry, 00:31:34.56\00:31:35.99 there's just a handful of Adventists 00:31:36.02\00:31:38.29 in the entire industry here in the US. 00:31:38.33\00:31:41.26 So it's a very unreached mission field 00:31:41.30\00:31:44.27 that somebody, you know, it's... 00:31:44.30\00:31:46.84 We don't have people 00:31:46.87\00:31:48.20 who are there to share these truths 00:31:48.24\00:31:49.57 and to build the relationships 00:31:49.60\00:31:51.67 that cause people to turn to Christ. 00:31:51.71\00:31:54.44 So somebody watching or listening to the program. 00:31:54.48\00:31:56.98 Let's talk about this. 00:31:57.05\00:31:58.38 How can people get involved in this program? 00:31:58.41\00:32:01.02 The Andrews program, 00:32:01.05\00:32:02.38 I'll pitch it to any one of you. 00:32:02.42\00:32:03.89 Go ahead. 00:32:03.92\00:32:05.25 Well, see, the number one thing they could do for us is, 00:32:05.29\00:32:07.72 you know, continue to pray. 00:32:07.76\00:32:09.19 You know, we're certainly praying for our program. 00:32:09.22\00:32:12.06 But we could use as many prayers as possible, 00:32:12.09\00:32:14.70 because, you know, 00:32:14.73\00:32:16.06 we've given the program over to the Lord. 00:32:16.10\00:32:17.70 We left it in His hands, 00:32:17.73\00:32:19.07 and we want Him to guide and direct it 00:32:19.10\00:32:20.44 to be the program that He wants to be. 00:32:20.47\00:32:22.90 But along with that, 00:32:22.94\00:32:24.64 there's also contributions as well. 00:32:24.67\00:32:26.98 I think Jonathan could probably say 00:32:27.01\00:32:29.24 a lot about that. 00:32:29.28\00:32:30.65 Right now we're wanting to grow our student population 00:32:30.68\00:32:34.95 as much as possible. 00:32:34.98\00:32:36.32 The industry right now 00:32:36.35\00:32:37.69 is just crying for pilots, the airlines. 00:32:37.72\00:32:40.99 Yeah, both. 00:32:41.02\00:32:42.36 I mean, it's astronomical right now. 00:32:42.39\00:32:44.93 They cannot fill, 00:32:44.96\00:32:46.29 they're canceling flights in the airlines 00:32:46.33\00:32:47.73 because they can't come up with enough pilots 00:32:47.76\00:32:49.23 and mechanics to keep them going. 00:32:49.26\00:32:50.60 Wow. 00:32:50.67\00:32:52.00 And so the whole industry because that the top industry 00:32:52.03\00:32:53.47 needs pilots and mechanics 00:32:53.54\00:32:54.87 that everybody underneath also needs pilots and mechanics 00:32:54.90\00:32:57.34 and so what used to take 12 years ago 00:32:57.41\00:33:01.98 to the majors is now taking like five. 00:33:02.01\00:33:06.28 And the pay is almost doubled in some of the industries. 00:33:06.31\00:33:09.78 So they're trying to really appeal to the people 00:33:09.82\00:33:12.42 to get involved in the industry 00:33:12.45\00:33:14.09 because so the demand is high. 00:33:14.16\00:33:16.29 The demand is high. 00:33:16.32\00:33:17.66 So we're trying to train professional pilots 00:33:17.69\00:33:21.53 to fill those roles, 00:33:21.56\00:33:22.90 but not just professional pilots, 00:33:22.93\00:33:24.27 but individuals that are passionate 00:33:24.30\00:33:26.74 about Jesus Christ. 00:33:26.77\00:33:28.17 And so we're trying to double the amount of students 00:33:28.20\00:33:31.04 that we're putting through our program. 00:33:31.07\00:33:32.41 So with that, we need more airplanes, 00:33:32.44\00:33:34.38 we need to do some infrastructure upgrade. 00:33:34.41\00:33:37.28 We want to put in a parallel taxi way 00:33:37.35\00:33:39.21 and some stuff like that 00:33:39.25\00:33:40.62 to make it make everything flow a lot better. 00:33:40.65\00:33:42.68 Okay. 00:33:42.72\00:33:44.09 So you're taxing is on the strip itself. 00:33:44.12\00:33:45.95 Right now, yeah, and right now we have to back taxi 00:33:45.99\00:33:47.72 so if somebody is taxing, he can't land, so... 00:33:47.76\00:33:49.89 Okay. 00:33:49.92\00:33:51.26 So that would be able to double the amount of flights 00:33:51.29\00:33:52.63 that we could get out of there. 00:33:52.66\00:33:54.00 So let's just start mentioning some... 00:33:54.03\00:33:55.36 What is simple like that cost to put and just generally, 00:33:55.40\00:33:57.87 you know? 00:33:57.90\00:33:59.40 Our parallel taxiway, we were looking at, 00:33:59.43\00:34:02.64 what was it, $50,000? 00:34:02.67\00:34:04.74 I think it was more than that. 00:34:04.77\00:34:06.54 Because it's asphalt, 00:34:06.57\00:34:07.91 there has to be regulations and all that. 00:34:07.94\00:34:09.38 Yeah, yeah. 00:34:09.41\00:34:10.75 The two new archers that we purchased, 00:34:10.78\00:34:12.28 those were 200 grand plus, 00:34:12.31\00:34:14.82 almost 300 grand, 350 plus. 00:34:14.85\00:34:17.72 So for a brand new airplane, it's not cheap. 00:34:17.75\00:34:20.19 No. 00:34:20.26\00:34:21.59 But the amount of pilots that we can push through 00:34:21.62\00:34:23.22 with that single airplane, you know, 00:34:23.26\00:34:25.89 we can take four or five flights a day 00:34:25.93\00:34:28.03 with a single airplane. 00:34:28.06\00:34:30.27 We can push 10 students through a week. 00:34:30.30\00:34:33.37 So each airplane is a massive asset. 00:34:33.44\00:34:36.71 And how many do you have in the fleet right now, 00:34:36.74\00:34:38.07 is it about five? 00:34:38.11\00:34:39.44 Right now we're working with five 00:34:39.47\00:34:40.81 Piper low wing aircraft that we're flying currently. 00:34:40.88\00:34:43.65 Yeah. We'd like more. 00:34:43.68\00:34:45.55 And honestly, put in more aircrafts 00:34:45.58\00:34:49.05 that are these SN type, 00:34:49.08\00:34:51.39 maximizes our potential 00:34:51.42\00:34:52.95 because we can have rolling over so right now, 00:34:52.99\00:34:55.19 if one of the airplanes goes down for maintenance, 00:34:55.22\00:35:00.23 now we have one less aircraft 00:35:00.30\00:35:01.93 and so the amount of flying 00:35:01.96\00:35:03.80 that's able to happen becomes reduced 00:35:03.87\00:35:06.43 because we just don't have the airplane. 00:35:06.47\00:35:10.74 And so by having additional aircraft, 00:35:10.81\00:35:13.81 they are all of the same type, 00:35:13.88\00:35:16.11 you know, if one goes down, all right, 00:35:16.14\00:35:17.95 well, here, we'll just address the schedule and for these guys 00:35:17.98\00:35:21.65 who were going to fly on that airplane 00:35:21.68\00:35:23.89 into the existing schedule for the other aircraft. 00:35:23.92\00:35:26.42 Now, I know there's a certain age to drive. 00:35:26.45\00:35:28.82 What is the age introduction into flight? 00:35:28.86\00:35:31.89 So I know most mothers would not want to hear this, 00:35:31.93\00:35:34.66 but you can solo at age 14. 00:35:34.70\00:35:39.30 But that's how safe our training is 00:35:39.33\00:35:41.40 and how safe the airplanes are, 00:35:41.44\00:35:44.01 is that we can do it at a much younger age. 00:35:44.04\00:35:45.71 Wow! 00:35:45.74\00:35:47.08 You got to be 16 to get a private license, 00:35:47.11\00:35:49.01 so you can solo at 14. 00:35:49.04\00:35:50.65 So when did flight become 00:35:50.68\00:35:52.48 an interest of yours, professor? 00:35:52.51\00:35:55.52 For me that happened 00:35:55.55\00:35:56.89 when I was probably five or six years old. 00:35:56.92\00:35:58.95 I grew up in Dallas, Texas 00:35:58.99\00:36:00.79 and lived right underneath the approach path 00:36:00.86\00:36:04.43 for a lot of the aircraft going in DFW. 00:36:04.46\00:36:06.36 So for me, you know, it was from an early age, 00:36:06.39\00:36:09.10 I knew that's what I wanted to do. 00:36:09.13\00:36:11.10 Yeah. 00:36:11.13\00:36:12.47 And just continued from there. 00:36:12.50\00:36:14.27 That's a unique place. 00:36:14.30\00:36:15.64 My wife and I think of the places 00:36:15.67\00:36:17.87 like St. Martin in the Caribbean, 00:36:17.91\00:36:20.41 where the beach is right in the approach path. 00:36:20.48\00:36:22.48 Oh, yeah. 00:36:22.51\00:36:23.85 You know, people, it's almost an attraction. 00:36:23.88\00:36:27.95 People go to St. Martin, 00:36:27.98\00:36:29.58 you know, they see these 747s 00:36:29.62\00:36:31.29 or big commercial planes diving in just, you know, 00:36:31.32\00:36:35.66 feet above the sand to land and then also take off 00:36:35.69\00:36:39.33 but not toward the ocean. 00:36:39.36\00:36:40.70 Very interesting thing. 00:36:40.73\00:36:42.06 So, at an early age, you kind of get the idea 00:36:42.10\00:36:44.33 that this is what I want to do for my life. 00:36:44.37\00:36:46.97 And then did you include that in your later years 00:36:47.04\00:36:50.51 or you read books and just... 00:36:50.54\00:36:52.31 Oh, yeah, I just, 00:36:52.34\00:36:54.94 once again I got myself into as much as I could. 00:36:54.98\00:36:59.18 I attended camps, things like that. 00:36:59.21\00:37:02.02 And the more I read, the more I thought, 00:37:02.05\00:37:03.49 man, it'd be really cool to be an astronaut. 00:37:03.52\00:37:06.19 So I thought, well, 00:37:06.22\00:37:07.56 what do I have to do to be an astronaut? 00:37:07.59\00:37:09.39 It looks like the Astronaut Corps. 00:37:09.42\00:37:10.83 They're like Navy pilots, 00:37:10.86\00:37:12.19 maybe I should become a Navy pilot 00:37:12.23\00:37:13.80 and I thought well, so where's the best place to go? 00:37:13.83\00:37:16.67 Maybe I should go to the naval academy, 00:37:16.70\00:37:18.87 and so I put in my paperwork and, you know, 00:37:18.90\00:37:21.77 they accepted me to the naval academy. 00:37:21.80\00:37:23.41 And so I just did all I could to put myself in a position 00:37:23.44\00:37:27.94 to pursue that dream. 00:37:27.98\00:37:29.31 Okay. 00:37:29.34\00:37:30.68 Then, you know, once again once I met God, 00:37:30.75\00:37:32.78 he had a different direction which has been even better. 00:37:32.81\00:37:37.62 Yeah, I guess your favorite hymn 00:37:37.65\00:37:39.02 is I'll fly away. 00:37:39.05\00:37:43.46 So let's talk about some of the specifics when you... 00:37:43.53\00:37:45.79 If a student enters 00:37:45.83\00:37:47.20 into Andrews University flight course, 00:37:47.23\00:37:50.00 I wanna specify that, you have the regular tuition, 00:37:50.07\00:37:52.47 but then if you want to enter into the flight program, 00:37:52.50\00:37:54.17 that's a separate cost altogether, 00:37:54.24\00:37:57.21 but that includes, 00:37:57.24\00:37:59.31 the regular tuition includes the basics of flight 00:37:59.34\00:38:02.54 or kind of help me understand that? 00:38:02.58\00:38:05.21 Yeah, so the cost of the airplane 00:38:05.25\00:38:08.28 is really the major factor that adds to it. 00:38:08.32\00:38:11.15 Okay. 00:38:11.19\00:38:12.75 Ultimately flying costs money. Right. 00:38:12.79\00:38:15.26 And unfortunately, aviation is 00:38:15.29\00:38:19.59 a high expense ticket item. 00:38:19.63\00:38:24.70 But initially they're getting training 00:38:24.73\00:38:28.17 in the airplane flying, their private pilot license. 00:38:28.20\00:38:32.11 And so they have to do the flight training, 00:38:32.14\00:38:34.08 they have to pay the flight instructor 00:38:34.11\00:38:36.21 for that time. 00:38:36.24\00:38:38.55 And then we transition them to an instrument right in, 00:38:38.58\00:38:41.85 which is training students how to fly through the clouds, 00:38:41.88\00:38:45.32 how to understand navigational charts, 00:38:45.35\00:38:47.46 and so that we can follow navigational systems 00:38:47.49\00:38:50.43 and you can make an approach and land in 00:38:50.46\00:38:53.29 without ever seeing outside. 00:38:53.33\00:38:55.50 Now that's, I like that. 00:38:55.53\00:38:58.10 It's a lot of fun 00:38:58.13\00:38:59.47 especially when you get right down 00:38:59.50\00:39:00.84 to the bare minimum altitude that you can fly to 00:39:00.87\00:39:03.71 and you're just coming out of the clouds, 00:39:03.74\00:39:05.97 right when you hit it. 00:39:06.01\00:39:07.38 I'm one of those guys that I could hear very well, 00:39:07.41\00:39:09.14 my wife and I, because of our mileage, 00:39:09.18\00:39:11.75 we get a chance to sit in first class 00:39:11.78\00:39:13.28 and sometimes I could hear through the door, minimums. 00:39:13.31\00:39:18.85 I know on approach what that means, 00:39:18.89\00:39:21.42 that means if you're gonna decide 00:39:21.46\00:39:22.79 to keep going or go around, 00:39:22.82\00:39:24.39 this is the time to do it. 00:39:24.43\00:39:25.76 Right. 00:39:25.79\00:39:27.13 You know, but it's really interesting. 00:39:27.20\00:39:28.53 What else would you say 00:39:28.56\00:39:29.90 as people are listening to the program? 00:39:29.93\00:39:31.43 What would you say to those who are trying to decide? 00:39:31.47\00:39:35.77 Is this what it is for me? 00:39:35.80\00:39:37.14 Is this for girls and guys? 00:39:37.21\00:39:40.41 You know, it's just something that what would you say 00:39:40.48\00:39:43.65 to attract somebody that may be thinking, 00:39:43.68\00:39:45.98 what do I want to do for my future? 00:39:46.01\00:39:47.68 For me aviation maintenance, 00:39:47.72\00:39:49.55 I got in the maintenance program, 00:39:49.58\00:39:51.45 I needed to do something with my hands. 00:39:51.49\00:39:52.82 Okay. 00:39:52.85\00:39:54.19 So that's how I went with the maintenance side of it, 00:39:54.26\00:39:57.13 but it's a very rewarding career. 00:39:57.16\00:39:58.49 It's a very professional career. 00:39:58.53\00:39:59.86 It's very clean career. 00:39:59.89\00:40:01.70 You got to be very honest, 00:40:01.73\00:40:03.06 you got to have a strong character. 00:40:03.10\00:40:04.43 You know, if you mess up something, 00:40:04.47\00:40:05.80 you gotta be honest about it and let other people know 00:40:05.83\00:40:08.37 and you double check each other. 00:40:08.40\00:40:10.31 My double check, the guys are working with me 00:40:10.34\00:40:11.97 and they double check me. 00:40:12.01\00:40:13.38 It's just the way that we do things. 00:40:13.41\00:40:14.74 You know, these guys are flying yesterday 00:40:14.78\00:40:16.11 and they double check each other even now, 00:40:16.14\00:40:17.58 just how we roll. 00:40:17.65\00:40:18.98 That's just how aviation works. 00:40:19.01\00:40:20.35 That's how we fly. 00:40:20.38\00:40:21.72 That's how we fly. That's right. 00:40:21.75\00:40:24.19 So, yeah, it's for guys and girls. 00:40:24.22\00:40:26.96 There's specific programs for females 00:40:26.99\00:40:28.79 that are involved in aviation, 00:40:28.82\00:40:30.83 both in the maintenance side and the flight side. 00:40:30.86\00:40:33.90 We've had a number of female students, 00:40:33.93\00:40:35.26 they've have come through the program 00:40:35.30\00:40:36.67 so we definitely welcome them as well. 00:40:36.70\00:40:39.07 'Cause I've seen a lot of female commercial pilots. 00:40:39.10\00:40:41.34 Yeah. 00:40:41.37\00:40:42.70 And they're more entering the industry 00:40:42.74\00:40:44.11 flying large equipment, you know, 00:40:44.14\00:40:45.81 and some people think, 00:40:45.84\00:40:47.18 well, isn't it tough for the flyer 00:40:47.21\00:40:48.54 larger and larger. 00:40:48.58\00:40:49.91 Well, you know, the principle is the same, 00:40:49.94\00:40:51.28 aviation principle, let's talk about those. 00:40:51.31\00:40:53.62 I asked you before the program, 00:40:53.65\00:40:55.32 the language that they use to communicate, 00:40:55.35\00:40:57.19 Alpha, Bravo, Kilo, Romeo... 00:40:57.22\00:40:59.75 Where did that come from? 00:40:59.79\00:41:01.36 Well, it certainly came from 00:41:01.39\00:41:03.53 back in the day in the World War II. 00:41:03.56\00:41:06.09 We had fundamental radios that were hard to understand 00:41:06.13\00:41:10.47 and so when they were trying 00:41:10.50\00:41:12.43 to communicate the different needs 00:41:12.47\00:41:14.47 or the different co-ordinates or whatever it maybe, 00:41:14.50\00:41:17.04 they found that some words sounded like others 00:41:17.11\00:41:21.24 like three became tree 00:41:21.28\00:41:27.12 because the th wouldn't come through on the radio 00:41:27.15\00:41:34.06 and, you know, nine became niner 00:41:34.09\00:41:36.86 because the German word for no is nine 00:41:36.93\00:41:40.70 and so then took niner and made it that way 00:41:40.73\00:41:43.67 so that it wouldn't be confused with the word no. 00:41:43.70\00:41:47.37 Wow, that's interesting. 00:41:47.44\00:41:48.77 And so there's a lot of elements of it. 00:41:48.80\00:41:50.81 You've got Alpha, Bravo, Charlie 00:41:50.84\00:41:53.31 the phonetic alphabet 00:41:53.38\00:41:55.24 and they are very intentional to make sure 00:41:55.28\00:41:57.15 that those words don't sound like, you know, 00:41:57.18\00:41:59.58 if you have said C, it could be D, 00:41:59.61\00:42:02.02 it could be E, it could be G over the radio, 00:42:02.05\00:42:05.39 we're not sure what you've said. 00:42:05.42\00:42:07.46 So now, if we say Charlie, Delta, Echo, Golf, 00:42:07.49\00:42:10.73 it's very clearly different. 00:42:10.76\00:42:13.06 I like the C, D, E,F, 00:42:13.09\00:42:14.43 I mean that makes a lot of sense 00:42:14.46\00:42:16.56 and it's a language that sounds funny sometimes 00:42:16.60\00:42:19.53 but when you wanna be clear, I like what you pointed out, 00:42:19.57\00:42:22.17 the honesty needed because if a pilot just says," 00:42:22.20\00:42:25.11 Oh, I messed up again, I don't want anyone to know. 00:42:25.14\00:42:27.11 The plane is ready to go. 00:42:27.18\00:42:28.71 That could be the difference between 00:42:28.74\00:42:30.08 somebody's life and death. 00:42:30.15\00:42:31.48 So you might say, you know, 00:42:31.51\00:42:32.85 wait, wait, wait, I am not done yet, 00:42:32.88\00:42:34.22 I need to get this switch put in. 00:42:34.25\00:42:35.65 Yep. Can I fly without it? 00:42:35.68\00:42:37.59 No, you're not gonna fly without it. 00:42:37.62\00:42:39.45 So that kind of really pulls you 00:42:39.49\00:42:40.86 into that perspective and being a professor now, 00:42:40.89\00:42:42.79 you're dealing with the students teaching. 00:42:42.82\00:42:44.46 Talk about some of that curriculum approach? 00:42:44.49\00:42:46.80 It's actually very awesome process 00:42:46.83\00:42:49.83 to be a part of, you know, 00:42:49.86\00:42:51.53 once again, I'm pretty new here, 00:42:51.57\00:42:53.10 just six months under my belt here at Andrews. 00:42:53.13\00:42:55.37 Okay. 00:42:55.40\00:42:56.74 But I've come to learn and appreciate 00:42:56.81\00:42:58.24 that the way we do things is very systematic 00:42:58.27\00:43:01.58 and it's very well thought out. 00:43:01.61\00:43:03.24 And, of course, 00:43:03.28\00:43:04.61 there's always room for improvement, 00:43:04.65\00:43:05.98 but I'd say we have a pretty strong program 00:43:06.01\00:43:07.85 which is awesome. 00:43:07.88\00:43:09.42 Coming from military background, 00:43:09.45\00:43:11.05 even charter background, 00:43:11.09\00:43:12.65 I love the systematic approach 00:43:12.69\00:43:14.06 because you know, 00:43:14.09\00:43:15.42 for me there's safety in that, you know, 00:43:15.46\00:43:17.63 it's like, I don't know, yeah, like I said, 00:43:17.66\00:43:20.13 just safety in that and so it's pretty awesome. 00:43:20.20\00:43:23.00 I'd say the way we are creating the curriculum 00:43:23.03\00:43:25.77 for the students and just giving them 00:43:25.80\00:43:27.77 some nice building blocks at the beginning. 00:43:27.80\00:43:30.11 And so by the time they get to their junior and senior year, 00:43:30.14\00:43:32.64 they have what they need to be able to give it back 00:43:32.67\00:43:34.88 to the students that are coming up behind them 00:43:34.91\00:43:37.35 which is pretty cool. 00:43:37.38\00:43:38.71 You know, somebody might be watching this program 00:43:38.75\00:43:40.45 from a warm country, 00:43:40.52\00:43:42.78 they have no clue where Andrews University is. 00:43:42.82\00:43:45.75 Give a general location, give us some specifics as to. 00:43:45.79\00:43:48.76 In America, 00:43:48.79\00:43:50.13 where would Andrews University be located? 00:43:50.16\00:43:52.53 Andrews is in the north of the country, 00:43:52.56\00:43:55.10 it's in Michigan. 00:43:55.13\00:43:56.77 On the East Coast. 00:43:56.80\00:43:58.43 Yeah, more towards the East Coast, 00:43:58.47\00:44:00.07 kind of in the central. 00:44:00.14\00:44:01.57 If you look at the Great Lakes region of the US, 00:44:01.60\00:44:05.04 Michigan is literally sitting 00:44:05.07\00:44:06.68 in the middle of all the great lakes. 00:44:06.71\00:44:08.68 So, Michigan kind of looks, it's like, 00:44:08.71\00:44:11.05 kind of looks like a hand or a mitten, 00:44:11.08\00:44:13.95 and Andrews is the very south west corner. 00:44:14.02\00:44:16.32 We're just north of in South Bend, Indiana. 00:44:16.35\00:44:19.89 Okay, now, there's a text in the Bible says, 00:44:19.92\00:44:22.72 "Pray that your flight be not in the winter." 00:44:22.76\00:44:25.49 Is that true in Andrews? 00:44:25.53\00:44:26.90 Yes. 00:44:26.93\00:44:28.56 The winter slows us down quite a bit 00:44:28.60\00:44:30.80 and so we have simulators 00:44:30.87\00:44:32.33 and we focus a lot of our in flight training 00:44:32.37\00:44:34.37 in the winter in the simulator, so. 00:44:34.40\00:44:35.80 Now the reason I'm mentioning that 00:44:35.84\00:44:37.21 is because when you go to Andrews, 00:44:37.24\00:44:38.57 you have to pray for the sun. 00:44:38.61\00:44:39.97 You know, you say good bye to it 00:44:40.01\00:44:41.34 when the summer is on its way and you say, 00:44:41.38\00:44:44.08 well, we have four more months before the sun shows up again. 00:44:44.15\00:44:47.42 So, you continue training but in simulators. 00:44:47.45\00:44:50.49 Right, we do simulators 00:44:50.52\00:44:51.85 on a fair weather days, we do go out and we fly. 00:44:51.89\00:44:54.82 We might have a little bit of snow on the runway 00:44:54.86\00:44:57.46 but it's plowed but it's snow... 00:44:57.53\00:45:00.20 So it's like, yes, the sun is out today. 00:45:00.23\00:45:02.36 That's right. 00:45:02.40\00:45:03.90 So we take advantage of it, 00:45:03.97\00:45:05.30 I mean that gives you cold weather environment 00:45:05.33\00:45:06.84 so you get to learn how to fly 00:45:06.87\00:45:08.20 and you're not depending on how the wind is. 00:45:08.24\00:45:09.57 So it does make for a better pilot, 00:45:09.60\00:45:10.94 you get a more well rounded experience. 00:45:10.97\00:45:12.34 Yeah, how to take care of your airplane 00:45:12.37\00:45:13.88 and everything else. 00:45:13.91\00:45:15.24 They say, "If you can land at Andrews, 00:45:15.28\00:45:16.61 you're good anywhere." 00:45:16.64\00:45:17.98 What length of the runway is it? 00:45:18.01\00:45:19.45 It's about 4,300 feet. 00:45:19.48\00:45:21.38 Okay, that's good. 00:45:21.42\00:45:23.05 And any specifics you wanna add to that about... 00:45:23.08\00:45:26.59 Anything else you wanna add to what we just commented on? 00:45:26.62\00:45:29.69 As far as just flight training there? 00:45:29.72\00:45:31.86 Yeah. 00:45:31.89\00:45:33.23 Yeah, you know, 00:45:33.26\00:45:34.83 major contribution I'd like to say or add to that is that, 00:45:34.86\00:45:39.87 we're always looking for ways to improve 00:45:39.90\00:45:41.47 and like we said before, 00:45:41.50\00:45:43.44 we are definitely trying to create pilots of character, 00:45:43.51\00:45:46.41 and that's a lot of times easier said than done. 00:45:46.44\00:45:50.45 And so, we're finding that 00:45:50.48\00:45:54.25 the more we're close to the God, 00:45:54.32\00:45:55.98 the more we can give to our students. 00:45:56.02\00:45:58.69 So we always covet you prayers for that, 00:45:58.72\00:46:00.76 and the other thing we wanted to talk about 00:46:00.79\00:46:03.19 is that we do have students that come through occasionally, 00:46:03.22\00:46:05.46 who are interested in going to the mission field, 00:46:05.49\00:46:07.80 and we just wanna support them 100% 00:46:07.83\00:46:09.76 as much as possible, 00:46:09.80\00:46:11.43 give them the best stepping stone to succeed. 00:46:11.47\00:46:18.04 And a lot of times, 00:46:18.07\00:46:19.41 it's difficult for them to get past 00:46:19.44\00:46:22.71 some of the financial obligations 00:46:22.74\00:46:24.35 that come with flight training 00:46:24.38\00:46:25.78 in order to go to the mission field. 00:46:25.81\00:46:27.22 And so I'd say, 00:46:27.25\00:46:28.58 that's one of our big needs too is, 00:46:28.62\00:46:30.99 you know, we do have a mission fund 00:46:31.02\00:46:32.85 and it's at a certain level that we feel could be better 00:46:32.89\00:46:38.49 in order to help support that aspect of our training. 00:46:38.53\00:46:43.10 We're gonna talk about that how people that are watching 00:46:43.13\00:46:45.33 and listening can donate to that, 00:46:45.37\00:46:47.44 but talk about some of the physical needs, 00:46:47.47\00:46:49.00 some of the equipment needs, 00:46:49.04\00:46:50.41 what are some of the things that 00:46:50.44\00:46:52.31 Andrews can actually look forward to, 00:46:52.34\00:46:54.98 if it's new computers, new planes, new equipment. 00:46:55.01\00:46:57.95 What are some of the things that will make this program 00:46:57.98\00:47:01.12 more stable or refurbished? 00:47:01.15\00:47:04.29 One of the big things is our need for new airplanes. 00:47:04.32\00:47:08.26 We have two very nice, 00:47:08.29\00:47:10.33 brand new in 2014 built airplanes 00:47:10.36\00:47:14.33 and we need to have incomparable airplanes 00:47:14.36\00:47:18.83 that are also available so we can hand off, 00:47:18.87\00:47:23.24 you know, like I said, 00:47:23.27\00:47:24.61 if one goes down for maintenance, 00:47:24.64\00:47:26.14 now that slows down the entire program 00:47:26.17\00:47:29.24 because we only have two. 00:47:29.28\00:47:31.68 And so if we have three or four of these types of aircraft, 00:47:31.71\00:47:35.95 now our availability, 00:47:35.98\00:47:37.82 if one of the maintenance items comes up, 00:47:37.85\00:47:41.19 everyone is still able to fly and continue flying. 00:47:41.22\00:47:44.99 So that's one of our big needs. 00:47:45.03\00:47:46.63 Another need that we will have very soon 00:47:46.70\00:47:50.20 when we start getting more students 00:47:50.27\00:47:52.27 is larger facilities 00:47:52.30\00:47:54.54 and being able to have a larger classrooms, 00:47:54.57\00:47:58.87 more office place for our flight instructors 00:47:58.91\00:48:01.74 to do their flight instruction, 00:48:01.78\00:48:03.65 training on the ground, 00:48:03.68\00:48:07.02 and the parallel taxiway, that opens up our capacity, 00:48:07.05\00:48:11.89 that will almost triple the amount of flights 00:48:11.92\00:48:15.52 that we can accomplish in a day. 00:48:15.56\00:48:17.63 Yeah, that parallel taxiway 00:48:17.66\00:48:19.06 is not an understatement by an means 00:48:19.09\00:48:20.80 because you know right now 00:48:20.83\00:48:22.46 if you think about it this way, if this is the runway, 00:48:22.50\00:48:25.40 this way you wanna take off or land, 00:48:25.43\00:48:27.34 if there's no parallel taxiway, 00:48:27.37\00:48:28.87 where you're kind of going up and down 00:48:28.90\00:48:31.21 and you can't take off and land 00:48:31.24\00:48:33.17 while somebody is taxing which is very important thing. 00:48:33.21\00:48:35.81 Any other equipment, 00:48:35.84\00:48:37.18 what about maintenance equipment, 00:48:37.25\00:48:38.58 anything like that needed or...? 00:48:38.61\00:48:39.95 No, we are... 00:48:39.98\00:48:41.32 I mean eventually facilities if we get more airplanes, 00:48:41.35\00:48:43.62 we're definitely gonna need to have a bigger facility 00:48:43.69\00:48:45.75 to be able to maintain them all 00:48:45.79\00:48:48.36 and that's just growing pains 00:48:48.39\00:48:49.72 and just part of the process of making it happen. 00:48:49.76\00:48:52.23 But we're, I mean, we're an international school, 00:48:52.26\00:48:54.83 we're prepared to take students from all over the world. 00:48:54.86\00:48:58.17 Andrews where it proclaimed to famous there, 00:48:58.20\00:48:59.87 we're the most internationally diverse, 00:48:59.90\00:49:02.17 ethnically diverse university in North America. 00:49:02.20\00:49:04.61 So we know how to handle visas, 00:49:04.64\00:49:06.14 we know how to handle all that kind of stuff 00:49:06.17\00:49:07.71 so we're willing and ready to take students. 00:49:07.74\00:49:10.45 And so that's another big thing we need, 00:49:10.48\00:49:11.81 we just need people to come. 00:49:11.85\00:49:13.18 That's right. 00:49:13.21\00:49:14.55 We are passionate about aviation 00:49:14.58\00:49:15.92 or passionate about sharing Jesus, 00:49:15.95\00:49:17.29 we just need people to do it with us. 00:49:17.32\00:49:19.55 And this is a... Yes. 00:49:19.59\00:49:21.89 And I was gonna say one of the advantages 00:49:21.92\00:49:23.63 of having the in common aircraft fleet is that, 00:49:23.66\00:49:29.23 if something goes wrong now 00:49:29.26\00:49:31.27 because we're flying the same airplane, 00:49:31.30\00:49:34.97 we can already have parts available 00:49:35.00\00:49:37.11 and we can already have pieces and components 00:49:37.14\00:49:39.67 of the aircrafts available 00:49:39.71\00:49:41.04 so we don't have to order it out 00:49:41.08\00:49:42.71 and wait for a week for it to be shipped from wherever. 00:49:42.74\00:49:46.82 Jonathan can have it on the shelf 00:49:46.85\00:49:49.25 and just pull it out and put it on the airplane 00:49:49.28\00:49:51.49 and get it out that same day if need be. 00:49:51.52\00:49:54.89 Uniformity is important. 00:49:54.92\00:49:56.73 It will make a big difference in the operations. 00:49:56.76\00:49:59.23 That's why is the Blue Angels Navy? 00:49:59.26\00:50:01.06 They are. 00:50:01.10\00:50:02.43 I thought so, 00:50:02.46\00:50:03.80 those kind of pilots you can trust them 00:50:03.87\00:50:05.47 to any other branch of the military but the Navy. 00:50:05.50\00:50:07.97 I'm just putting in both. 00:50:08.00\00:50:10.04 But I wanna be able to give you some information 00:50:10.11\00:50:12.17 to get in touch with David, Jonathan and Jeremy 00:50:12.21\00:50:16.24 and also to find out more about this Aviation program. 00:50:16.28\00:50:19.01 As you can tell, I am excited about it 00:50:19.05\00:50:20.55 but you may want to find out 00:50:20.62\00:50:22.95 what your student prospectfully would want 00:50:22.98\00:50:26.49 to be able to do to get to enroll in this program 00:50:26.52\00:50:30.03 for the maybe upcoming semester. 00:50:30.06\00:50:32.03 Here is the information that you're going to need. 00:50:32.06\00:50:36.87 If you are interested in the flying career 00:50:36.90\00:50:39.37 or if the Lord has impressed you 00:50:39.40\00:50:41.04 to be a missionary pilot, then check out 00:50:41.07\00:50:43.44 the Andrews University Department of Aviation 00:50:43.51\00:50:46.24 and their flight, maintenance and missionary pilot programs. 00:50:46.27\00:50:49.81 Their website is Andrews.edu/aviation. 00:50:49.84\00:50:53.95 That's Andrews.edu/aviation. 00:50:54.02\00:50:57.95 You may also call them at (269) 471-3120. 00:50:57.99\00:51:03.16 If you prefer, you may also write to them 00:51:03.19\00:51:05.69 at Andrews University Department of Aviation, 00:51:05.73\00:51:08.76 3898 Griggs Avenue, 00:51:08.80\00:51:11.20 Berrien Springs, Michigan 49104. 00:51:11.23\00:51:14.30
