I want to spend my life 00:00:01.63\00:00:06.67 Mending broken people 00:00:07.50\00:00:12.31 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.41\00:00:18.01 Removing pain 00:00:18.85\00:00:23.22 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.85\00:00:28.79 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.89\00:00:33.90 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.50\00:00:39.50 Mending broken people 00:00:40.24\00:00:44.81 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.74\00:00:50.95 Mending broken people 00:00:51.35\00:00:56.08 - Hello and welcome to another 3ABN Today 00:01:10.13\00:01:12.73 program! I'm Jason Bradley, and I'm excited about the 00:01:12.87\00:01:15.80 discussion we are going to have today about CAMPUS 00:01:15.97\00:01:19.11 Ministry. And here with me to discuss this very 00:01:19.21\00:01:22.48 important topic is Pastor Jermaine Gayle! He is the 00:01:22.58\00:01:27.82 assistant director with CAMPUS Ministries. We 00:01:27.92\00:01:30.89 have Julianna Dunn. She's a CAMPUS missionary; 00:01:30.99\00:01:34.62 and we have Miranda Lentz, who is a CAMPUS missionary, 00:01:34.72\00:01:38.23 as well. It's great to have you guys here. 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.13 - Thank you for having me. - Oh, man-I can't wait to 00:01:40.23\00:01:41.96 jump into this discussion about CAMPUS Ministry, 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.83 because it seems like a very challenging task to 00:01:44.93\00:01:49.10 reach individuals that are on campuses when 00:01:49.24\00:01:52.74 we're living in such a secular society. But 00:01:52.87\00:01:56.61 before we jump into the meat of the interview, 00:01:56.71\00:01:59.81 we're going to be blessed in song by Naomi Jackson, 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.08 who will be singing "Then They Will Know." 00:02:03.15\00:02:05.85 I will speak 00:02:21.40\00:02:24.11 I will wait 00:02:25.14\00:02:28.01 I will send prophets among them 00:02:29.08\00:02:35.35 That they might hear 00:02:35.65\00:02:38.62 That they might see 00:02:39.25\00:02:42.02 And understand how much I love them 00:02:42.82\00:02:49.30 Then they will know that I am Father 00:02:49.76\00:02:56.04 Then they will know I am Lord 00:02:56.40\00:03:02.08 They'll walk with Me 00:03:02.84\00:03:05.65 And be My people 00:03:06.21\00:03:09.25 I'll walk with them as their God 00:03:09.58\00:03:14.96 As their God 00:03:15.46\00:03:20.13 I will strike 00:03:23.23\00:03:25.73 I will scourge 00:03:26.47\00:03:29.27 And carry out vengeance upon them 00:03:29.57\00:03:35.74 But I will heal the wounds I make 00:03:36.38\00:03:42.35 And tenderly take them back to me 00:03:42.98\00:03:49.26 Then they will know that I am Father 00:03:49.72\00:03:56.03 Then they will know I am Lord 00:03:56.33\00:04:02.10 They'll walk with Me 00:04:03.00\00:04:06.04 And be My people 00:04:06.34\00:04:09.64 I'll walk with them as their God 00:04:09.74\00:04:15.38 This is heaven 00:04:16.55\00:04:19.49 This is salvation 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.82 This is their great hope and Mine 00:04:23.12\00:04:29.10 He will come 00:04:44.68\00:04:47.65 My own Son 00:04:48.58\00:04:51.45 A Word faithful hearts can't help hearing 00:04:52.02\00:04:58.53 And by His death 00:04:58.86\00:05:01.40 With His last breath 00:05:02.06\00:05:04.70 A Father's forgiveness comes flowing 00:05:05.47\00:05:11.91 Then they will know 00:05:12.27\00:05:14.94 That I am Savior 00:05:15.61\00:05:18.71 I am Redeemer and Friend 00:05:19.01\00:05:24.49 Immanuel 00:05:25.45\00:05:28.49 The God who is with them 00:05:28.72\00:05:31.79 The God who gives all He can 00:05:32.13\00:05:38.10 He is salvation 00:05:38.83\00:05:41.97 He is the kingdom 00:05:42.14\00:05:45.34 To know Him is paradise 00:05:45.61\00:05:52.11 Then they will know that I am Father 00:05:52.35\00:05:58.92 They will know I am Lord 00:05:59.12\00:06:04.46 I am Lord 00:06:05.06\00:06:11.57 - Thank you for that beautiful song, Naomi. 00:06:24.35\00:06:26.41 Now, okay-we gotta jump into the meat of this. Tell 00:06:27.38\00:06:30.75 me a little bit about your background. - Thank you 00:06:30.85\00:06:34.72 for asking that question, Jason. I originally grew 00:06:34.86\00:06:38.99 up in Jamaica; that's where I'm from. I lived there, I 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.06 spent most of my life there...I think I left 00:06:42.16\00:06:43.97 Jamaica when I was about 18 and came to the US; 00:06:44.07\00:06:47.47 lived with my mom in Philadelphia and then 00:06:47.57\00:06:49.74 went to Virginia to study, and then from there to 00:06:49.84\00:06:53.27 Michigan (where I am now). I'm there living now, and... 00:06:54.08\00:06:57.38 - Okay! - But yeah. For now, I'll go with that, and I'll 00:06:57.45\00:07:01.22 share a little bit more later. [laughter] - Okay, 00:07:01.32\00:07:03.69 sounds good. And what about you? - Well, I was 00:07:03.79\00:07:06.45 born in Tennessee, and then I moved into Ohio 00:07:06.55\00:07:08.56 for a few years, and now I'm in Michigan. I grew 00:07:08.66\00:07:12.59 up in an Adventist family, and I've still been in the 00:07:12.69\00:07:16.83 church since then. - Nice! So you've always been 00:07:16.93\00:07:18.83 Adventist? - Yes. - Okay. You were raised in the 00:07:18.93\00:07:20.64 church, stayed in the church... That's a powerful 00:07:20.70\00:07:22.27 testimony in and of itself. A lot of times, people think 00:07:22.34\00:07:25.77 that, "Oh, yeah, I have to leave and do this, 00:07:25.87\00:07:28.18 that, and a third to have a powerful testimony," but 00:07:28.31\00:07:30.78 no. You have a very powerful testimony in the fact that 00:07:30.88\00:07:32.88 you stood firm and you stayed in the faith, and 00:07:32.95\00:07:35.35 that's awesome. Tell me about YOUR background. 00:07:35.45\00:07:38.52 - Well, I was raised in a small town in Northern 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.69 Michigan-Oscoda, Michigan- and while I was growing up, 00:07:41.79\00:07:45.66 we went to church together till I was in early middle 00:07:45.76\00:07:49.10 school...around 3rd grade. I guess elementary school. 00:07:49.20\00:07:51.77 And at that time, my family stopped going to 00:07:52.83\00:07:55.00 church because of a falling out with our pastor. - Mhm. 00:07:55.07\00:07:58.41 - But my grandma, she still wanted me and my 00:07:58.51\00:08:00.78 twin brother to go to church. She's a faithful 00:08:00.84\00:08:03.21 grandma, so she took us with her to a Baptist church 00:08:03.31\00:08:06.75 for a while. When I was a little bit older in high 00:08:06.85\00:08:10.39 school, I kind of... I started going to a youth 00:08:10.49\00:08:12.22 group, but then I drifted away from church... 00:08:12.29\00:08:13.72 But when I decided to go to Michigan State University 00:08:13.82\00:08:15.92 after my senior year of high school, that's when 00:08:16.02\00:08:18.79 I met the Public Campus Ministries group, which 00:08:18.89\00:08:21.40 I can talk about later... But that's when I found 00:08:21.46\00:08:23.70 God. - Wow. Awesome. Now Jermaine, tell me a little bit 00:08:23.80\00:08:28.44 about CAMPUS. Tell me about the history of 00:08:28.54\00:08:30.91 CAMPUS. - So, CAMPUS is an acronym. It's called 00:08:31.01\00:08:34.68 the Center for Adventist Ministry to Public University 00:08:34.78\00:08:37.11 Students. We're blessed to be in Michigan. The 00:08:37.18\00:08:40.48 Michigan Conference in 1998 became the first conference 00:08:40.58\00:08:44.22 in the North American Division to have a department that 00:08:44.32\00:08:47.89 was solely dedicated to doing ministry on the public secular 00:08:47.96\00:08:52.29 university campus. And in 1999, the center was 00:08:52.39\00:08:56.03 born, and the Center for Adventist Ministry to Public 00:08:56.13\00:08:59.47 University Students is where we do several things, but 00:08:59.57\00:09:03.37 more primarily we do ministry on the public 00:09:03.47\00:09:05.94 university campus. At the center, we have a house 00:09:06.04\00:09:09.41 that is dedicated towards meeting the needs of not 00:09:09.51\00:09:14.18 only students but also our missionaries, and 00:09:14.28\00:09:16.52 we have programs that we do there, as well. So 00:09:16.62\00:09:19.02 throughout the years, since 1999 to now, CAMPUS has 00:09:19.12\00:09:23.39 been a huge benefit- not only to the church 00:09:23.49\00:09:27.40 but also to the public university. We started 00:09:27.50\00:09:30.40 first in Ann Arbor by University of Michigan, 00:09:30.50\00:09:33.70 which has over 40,000 students. - 40 thousand 00:09:33.80\00:09:36.84 students! - Over 40,000 students. - Wow! - And 00:09:36.94\00:09:39.44 then we moved from Ann Arbor to East Lancing, 00:09:39.51\00:09:42.18 Michigan, which is where we are now, and Michigan 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.78 State has over 50,000 students. - Wow! - The 00:09:44.88\00:09:49.55 center is about a block away from Michigan State 00:09:49.62\00:09:52.32 University. We're very blessed, because we're 00:09:52.39\00:09:54.59 not only surrounded by a great, vast mission 00:09:54.69\00:09:57.69 field, but we also have a local church there: 00:09:57.79\00:10:00.16 the University church, which is where I serve 00:10:00.23\00:10:03.60 as one of the pastors. So we have the University 00:10:03.67\00:10:06.20 church, we have the CAMPUS house, which is the center, 00:10:06.27\00:10:09.44 and then we have the University which is our 00:10:09.47\00:10:12.51 mission field. So, a lot of work that needs to 00:10:12.57\00:10:14.91 be done. - Yes! Sounds like a huge task, a huge 00:10:14.98\00:10:18.15 undertaking. - It is. - How did you join CAMPUS? 00:10:18.18\00:10:21.52 - You know, it's interesting for me, 'cause I feel... 00:10:22.15\00:10:25.22 A part of my experience has been- the Lord has 00:10:26.15\00:10:28.79 led me on a journey. And something that I didn't 00:10:28.86\00:10:31.59 share at the beginning was I didn't grow up in the 00:10:31.66\00:10:35.03 church. When I was in Jamaica, I was very... 00:10:35.13\00:10:37.93 I was somewhat antagonistic towards God-very rebellious 00:10:38.03\00:10:41.17 against Him because I felt like growing up in 00:10:41.27\00:10:44.77 my home, I felt God didn't really care about me 00:10:44.84\00:10:47.34 because of some situation that had taken place in 00:10:47.41\00:10:49.31 my house. My dad left when I was about 11, 00:10:49.38\00:10:52.51 and I haven't seen him since that time-so it's 00:10:52.58\00:10:55.42 been 19 years since I've seen my father. And this 00:10:55.48\00:10:59.12 fall, in the fall, I'll be able to see him. 00:10:59.22\00:11:02.62 - Yeah. - But nonetheless, from that experience, I 00:11:02.72\00:11:06.36 literally just turned my back on the idea of God, 00:11:06.49\00:11:09.46 I became more atheistic in my mindset, and just 00:11:09.53\00:11:13.57 whatever I could to get away from the idea of 00:11:13.70\00:11:15.80 God was what I did. I remember the first time 00:11:15.90\00:11:21.01 I actually prayed and asked God, and my prayer was 00:11:21.11\00:11:23.75 very simple. I said, "God, if You exist, show me. 00:11:23.85\00:11:26.21 And if You care, show me, as well," and He 00:11:26.31\00:11:29.18 answered that prayer by leading me to working 00:11:29.28\00:11:31.99 at a pharmacy where every single person was a Seventh-day 00:11:32.09\00:11:34.82 Adventist. - You have got to be kidding me. 00:11:34.92\00:11:37.53 - Nope! - Every single person? - Every single 00:11:37.59\00:11:39.19 person was a Seventh-day Adventist-from the manager 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.93 to the supervisor going all the way down, and 00:11:41.03\00:11:44.03 I remember walking into this pharmacy where you 00:11:44.13\00:11:46.94 had Bible verses on every wall...and that's where 00:11:47.00\00:11:49.94 I received my first Bible. It's crazy to think, 00:11:50.01\00:11:53.27 because I received that Bible for my birthday, 00:11:53.38\00:11:56.61 so it was a birthday gift on January 8th...and at 00:11:56.68\00:11:59.28 first, I thought it was an insult. You know?-someone 00:11:59.35\00:12:01.48 who didn't believe in God but received the Bible as 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.12 a birthday gift. - Uh-huh. - That Bible became the 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.15 place that I went for answers to my many 00:12:06.25\00:12:09.16 questions that I had for God, and so I began reading 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.86 it. I remember spending all night reading, and that's 00:12:11.93\00:12:15.46 how I came into the church. - That is awesome. - So the 00:12:15.53\00:12:18.80 Lord has led me on that journey; and since that 00:12:18.87\00:12:22.17 time, I remember committing myself and saying, "Lord, 00:12:22.24\00:12:24.47 wherever you want to take me, I'll go." And that was 00:12:24.54\00:12:27.51 the beginning of that journey. And so when I 00:12:27.61\00:12:29.44 left Jamaica to come to the United States, I was 00:12:29.54\00:12:34.18 living with my mom, and then I felt the Lord was 00:12:34.28\00:12:36.79 calling me to the ministry, and ministry full-time. 00:12:36.89\00:12:39.49 Of course, I wasn't very willing at the time, but 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.42 nonetheless I surrendered, and the Lord led me to 00:12:42.52\00:12:45.46 pastoral ministry. I came to campus, and I remember 00:12:45.56\00:12:52.33 the first time I arrived, it was actually an interesting 00:12:52.40\00:12:55.70 experience, because I got a phone call. And 00:12:55.80\00:12:58.37 on the phone call, someone was telling me that there 00:12:58.44\00:13:00.24 was an opportunity to work and to be a part 00:13:00.34\00:13:03.55 of CAMPUS Ministries in Michigan. Never heard 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.45 of it at that time... Before that time, I 00:13:05.58\00:13:07.88 should say. And when I finally came... When I 00:13:07.98\00:13:13.69 got the call, actually, I was told that I had 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.76 one week to get a car, to drive to Michigan, 00:13:15.82\00:13:19.26 and I had no money at all. And so I knelt and 00:13:19.33\00:13:22.60 prayed, and in about two hours, I was able to raise 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.43 $4,000, was able to buy a car. - In t... Whoa, whoa, 00:13:25.50\00:13:28.77 whoa, hold on... [laughter] Hold on. In two hours, you 00:13:28.84\00:13:32.41 raised $4,000? - $4,000. The Lord provided, and 00:13:32.51\00:13:35.88 I was able to buy a car, and I drove to Michigan. 00:13:35.98\00:13:39.11 It's interesting, because Jason, there was a time 00:13:40.18\00:13:42.28 where I actually prayed and I said, "Lord, I would 00:13:42.35\00:13:44.75 never go to work where it's cold, or too cold." 00:13:44.82\00:13:47.99 - Uh-huh. - And the Lord sent me to Michigan. 00:13:48.06\00:13:49.82 - Oh, it's definitely cold in Michigan. [laughter] 00:13:49.92\00:13:51.93 - And January of 2015, I was sent to the Upper 00:13:52.43\00:13:55.36 Peninsula of Michigan, which is even colder. 00:13:55.40\00:13:58.03 - Like, Camp Au Sable area, or...? - No, actually, 00:13:58.10\00:14:00.54 beyond that! This was in Houghton, so close 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.77 to Michigan Tech. That year was a bitter... It 00:14:03.87\00:14:07.48 was a really tough year; but nonetheless, I enjoyed 00:14:07.58\00:14:10.11 it. Just imagine a Jamaican skiing and doing those kinds 00:14:10.18\00:14:14.42 of winter sports. - Yeah, yeah, yeah! - But it was 00:14:14.48\00:14:17.25 an amazing experience, and since then the Lord 00:14:17.32\00:14:19.85 has been blessing us tremendously. - Praise 00:14:19.92\00:14:21.32 the Lord. What about you, Julianna? How did you come 00:14:21.42\00:14:25.53 to CAMPUS? - Like I said, I grew up in the Adventist 00:14:25.63\00:14:29.63 church, went to Adventist schools, went to an Adventist 00:14:29.73\00:14:32.87 high school... After high school, I was planning 00:14:32.97\00:14:35.37 to go to a public university. I was working at a summer 00:14:35.47\00:14:39.11 camp the summer after I graduated, and that's 00:14:39.21\00:14:41.61 how I found out about CAMPUS. The director 00:14:41.68\00:14:43.01 was there, also, at the summer camp, and so 00:14:43.11\00:14:45.61 that kind of put into my head, "Maybe I should 00:14:45.71\00:14:47.42 get some training about how I can reach out to 00:14:47.52\00:14:49.38 people because I'm planning to go to a public university," 00:14:49.45\00:14:52.29 so that's how I ended up at CAMPUS. I took the 00:14:52.39\00:14:54.82 year off after high school and became a missionary. 00:14:54.89\00:14:56.86 - Wow. What about you, Miranda? - Well... [giggles] 00:14:56.96\00:15:00.90 When I started off on my freshman year at Michigan 00:15:00.96\00:15:05.60 State University, that's when-like I said earlier- 00:15:05.67\00:15:09.00 I met the CAMPUS group. I was surrounded in a 00:15:09.14\00:15:12.11 lot of different influences when I first got there. 00:15:12.21\00:15:13.91 I was a freshman who was 17 years old, living on a 00:15:13.98\00:15:17.81 transfer floor of a bunch of 21, 22-year-olds who 00:15:17.91\00:15:20.98 loved to drink and smoke and do all those things. 00:15:21.08\00:15:24.19 And when I first got there, I was heavily 00:15:24.29\00:15:26.62 surrounded with those influences. They were 00:15:26.76\00:15:28.36 my friends, so they pressured me to do different things 00:15:28.46\00:15:30.43 that I didn't really want to do... So after 00:15:30.53\00:15:33.29 a little while, I decided to break off from those 00:15:33.40\00:15:35.76 friends, because I knew I wanted something better 00:15:35.86\00:15:37.77 for my life. And at that time, I didn't really know 00:15:37.87\00:15:42.00 who God was. Growing up, I had different... 00:15:42.10\00:15:44.44 I didn't have an understanding of who He was; I viewed 00:15:44.54\00:15:47.48 Him as Someone who didn't truly care about 00:15:47.58\00:15:50.21 me, based off-kind of like Pastor Jermaine was saying- 00:15:50.31\00:15:52.88 based off of different situations, I thought that 00:15:52.95\00:15:56.05 God was distant; He didn't care about my family 00:15:56.12\00:15:58.42 because of what we were going through, and so 00:15:58.52\00:16:00.52 when I got to college and I was going through a 00:16:00.59\00:16:03.86 difficult situation, I decided that I wanted 00:16:03.96\00:16:06.33 to give God a chance and I wanted to pray. And I 00:16:06.39\00:16:09.50 did pray, and I asked Him for at least one 00:16:09.56\00:16:12.60 good Christian friend, because I had a lot of 00:16:12.67\00:16:14.37 friends that weren't really good influences, so... 00:16:14.44\00:16:17.27 I was praying for one good Christian friend. 00:16:17.37\00:16:20.11 And so one day, I was walking on campus back 00:16:20.21\00:16:24.28 to my dorm, and Michigan State's campus is pretty 00:16:24.38\00:16:26.41 big. It takes about 30 minutes to walk across 00:16:26.51\00:16:28.98 the whole campus. - Oh, wow. - And I went to 00:16:29.05\00:16:32.95 a cafe on the other side of campus that I'd never 00:16:33.05\00:16:37.83 been to, so I had to use my GPS to get there. 00:16:37.89\00:16:41.10 But on the way back, I decided that I wanted to 00:16:41.16\00:16:43.03 just... - You had to- whoa, you had to use your GPS 00:16:43.10\00:16:45.23 to get to the cafeteria on the other side of 00:16:45.30\00:16:47.90 campus? [laughter] - Yeah. I didn't have to use the GPS 00:16:48.00\00:16:52.94 for the closer cafeterias, but that was really far, 00:16:53.01\00:16:56.24 so... On the way back, though, I decided that I 00:16:56.31\00:16:59.01 wanted to turn it off and just figure out my way 00:16:59.11\00:17:00.95 back to my dorm room. And so I was walking 00:17:01.02\00:17:05.32 around campus, and I actually found a quicker 00:17:05.39\00:17:06.79 way to get there-that the GPS had taken me the longer 00:17:06.86\00:17:09.36 way but I found a quicker way. And so as I was 00:17:09.42\00:17:11.66 walking down the different sidewalks... It was almost 00:17:11.73\00:17:14.30 like, looking back now, it was like God was leading 00:17:14.36\00:17:16.50 me to a tent. So, there was a tent set up on 00:17:16.56\00:17:20.57 campus, and it was actually an event that CAMPUS 00:17:20.64\00:17:23.00 Ministries was putting on called, "Creative 00:17:23.10\00:17:25.37 Tour." And when I got there, I just saw like, 00:17:25.44\00:17:29.98 free massages, there was free food, live music, 00:17:30.05\00:17:32.98 messages from a pastor, and... I kind of wasn't 00:17:33.08\00:17:37.89 interested in any of that stuff, but I kept walking; 00:17:37.95\00:17:40.12 and as I kept walking, I saw a big prayer wall 00:17:40.19\00:17:42.19 on the other side of the sidewalk. And I was like, 00:17:42.26\00:17:45.03 "Oh, you know, this is a Christian group," 00:17:45.13\00:17:46.53 and I realized that I had a prayer request that I 00:17:46.63\00:17:49.76 wanted people to be praying for, so I walked up to the 00:17:49.83\00:17:52.53 prayer wall and I started writing my prayer requests 00:17:52.63\00:17:54.24 to find one good Christian friend. And it's crazy, 00:17:54.30\00:17:57.67 because while I was doing that, God literally answered 00:17:57.77\00:18:00.04 my prayer; and Julianna, she actually walked up 00:18:00.11\00:18:02.51 to me and started a conversation, and we 00:18:02.58\00:18:05.78 started talking. I was a little intimidated at first, 00:18:05.91\00:18:08.48 because I was a little freshman, and I didn't 00:18:08.58\00:18:11.92 know how old Julianna was. We found out after we 00:18:11.99\00:18:13.79 started talking that we were almost the same 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.19 age, but I thought she was, like, way older than 00:18:15.22\00:18:17.33 me, and I was super nervous to talk to her! Because back 00:18:17.39\00:18:20.90 then, I was a lot more introverted than I am 00:18:20.96\00:18:22.60 now. Praise the Lord He's made me a little bit more 00:18:22.66\00:18:25.47 extroverted, but...[giggles] I was really introverted. 00:18:25.53\00:18:27.47 And so, we started talking, and she invited me inside 00:18:27.54\00:18:30.31 the tent just to listen to the music and the messages. 00:18:30.41\00:18:33.88 And so, we sat down, and we talked a little bit before 00:18:33.94\00:18:36.04 it started. And then afterwards, she handed me a card that had 00:18:36.11\00:18:39.48 different small group Bible studies on it. At the time, 00:18:39.58\00:18:42.92 they were doing four small groups-one every day, 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.69 Monday to Thursday. And so, she was explaining to 00:18:45.79\00:18:48.66 me the different topics, and she told me about 00:18:48.76\00:18:50.33 Monday night which was my most free night, and 00:18:50.39\00:18:52.33 she told me it was called Pillars of the Bible. It 00:18:52.43\00:18:54.60 sounded really interesting to me, and she was going 00:18:54.70\00:18:56.73 to be there, so I decided to go. I remember that 00:18:56.87\00:19:01.47 first Bible study I went to. We studied Daniel 00:19:01.57\00:19:03.94 2, Nebuchadnezzar's dream, and I had never heard anything 00:19:04.07\00:19:09.78 about Bible prophecy, growing up, and I especially hadn't 00:19:09.88\00:19:13.05 seen how closely history is related to the Bible. 00:19:13.15\00:19:15.62 So while we were going through the texts, it 00:19:15.75\00:19:17.52 completely blew my mind- and Pastor Jermaine was 00:19:17.62\00:19:19.69 actually the small group leader. And so, we were 00:19:19.79\00:19:25.09 going through them-every single verse and question 00:19:25.19\00:19:28.76 that... It was the It Is Written Bible study packet. 00:19:28.86\00:19:30.93 Every little question we were going through, I 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.87 was like, "Whoa, this is so crazy how related 00:19:32.93\00:19:36.47 history is to the Bible." And so, I ended up going; 00:19:36.57\00:19:40.88 I kept going after that, because I was so interested, 00:19:40.98\00:19:44.05 and I had that thirst to learn more about the 00:19:44.18\00:19:46.48 Bible after that. And so, I kept studying with them, 00:19:46.58\00:19:49.95 and everyone was so different from anyone 00:19:50.05\00:19:52.45 I'd met-any young people I'd ever met. I could tell 00:19:52.55\00:19:55.92 that they were so set apart from God and that 00:19:55.99\00:19:58.56 they wanted to truly serve Him. And after 00:19:58.66\00:20:01.10 I got to know them a little bit better, they 00:20:01.20\00:20:02.63 told me that they took a whole year off to serve 00:20:02.70\00:20:04.47 God-off of school and off of work-and when 00:20:04.60\00:20:07.47 they told me that, I realized that if they 00:20:07.54\00:20:10.24 love God that much, then there's something about 00:20:10.34\00:20:12.21 Him I was missing; so I really wanted to learn 00:20:12.27\00:20:14.48 who He was and learn why these young people 00:20:14.58\00:20:17.75 wanted to serve Him and didn't do what other young 00:20:17.85\00:20:20.12 people were doing. So, I kept studying with them, 00:20:20.18\00:20:23.05 and we became really good friends. They're my family. 00:20:23.15\00:20:26.12 [giggles] And so after the semester, I 00:20:26.19\00:20:31.86 decided to be baptized. - Praise the Lord. - Yeah. 00:20:31.96\00:20:34.60 And so after that, I was involved with our center 00:20:34.66\00:20:37.40 group at Michigan State. I was praying about what 00:20:37.47\00:20:41.20 I should do to the next year, 'cause I was planning 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.34 on going back to school... but I had a thought: what 00:20:43.41\00:20:46.17 about doing CAMPUS? What about reaching out to students 00:20:46.31\00:20:49.21 like I was reached out to? So I started praying about 00:20:49.28\00:20:52.11 it...and it was kind of a hard decision for me, 00:20:52.21\00:20:54.28 because I'm a first-generation college student, and I didn't 00:20:54.35\00:20:59.59 know how my parents would react to me taking a year 00:20:59.69\00:21:01.89 off. They kind of reacted negatively towards 00:21:01.96\00:21:03.73 me becoming an Adventist, so I was scared to even 00:21:03.83\00:21:06.53 think about that! But also, I just... I was kind 00:21:06.66\00:21:11.47 of scared to take time off of school, because 00:21:11.57\00:21:13.50 I didn't know what would happen after I took the 00:21:13.57\00:21:16.00 year off. But I really prayed about it, and I 00:21:16.07\00:21:18.07 really thought about it, because I knew if I could 00:21:18.17\00:21:21.21 just impact one person like I was impacted that 00:21:21.28\00:21:23.48 year, then it was all worth it. So, I decided 00:21:23.58\00:21:26.58 to become a CAMPUS missionary. - That's awesome. You know, 00:21:26.65\00:21:30.12 it's very interesting that, I mean, you said a prayer, 00:21:30.19\00:21:32.39 and your prayer was answered almost instantly. You were 00:21:32.45\00:21:35.56 surrounded by, you know, a circle of bad influences 00:21:35.62\00:21:38.43 at first; and then here comes Julianna, introduces 00:21:38.53\00:21:43.40 you to this program, and also studies with you. 00:21:43.50\00:21:48.10 You studied Daniel chapter 2, and Pastor was leading 00:21:48.20\00:21:51.91 out on the studies. And then, you saw something 00:21:52.01\00:21:57.18 in them that they had that love for God that was just 00:21:57.28\00:22:01.08 contagious; and you realized that there was something 00:22:01.18\00:22:04.49 that you were missing about the God that they serve. 00:22:04.55\00:22:08.02 And then, you started serving God, too! [laughter] 00:22:08.12\00:22:12.06 - Amen. - And you found out what it was that you were 00:22:12.16\00:22:14.30 missing. And as a result of that, too, and the Holy 00:22:14.40\00:22:19.23 Spirit working on you, you wanted to share 00:22:19.33\00:22:21.77 that with somebody else. That is beautiful. That's 00:22:21.87\00:22:25.47 a powerful testimony. Pastor, why don't you 00:22:25.54\00:22:28.58 tell us about some of the program details, 00:22:28.78\00:22:31.61 like what programs do you offer, and what are 00:22:31.71\00:22:34.62 the details of those? - Definitely. So, there 00:22:34.78\00:22:38.12 are several programs that we do at CAMPUS; and 00:22:38.19\00:22:40.62 Miranda just mentioned she took a year off to 00:22:40.79\00:22:42.86 become a missionary. That program, we call 00:22:42.96\00:22:45.73 the internship program; so we invite students 00:22:45.79\00:22:48.33 that are studying on public university campuses, 00:22:48.43\00:22:51.97 or a student that is in between high school 00:22:52.07\00:22:55.57 and college to take a year off to get back 00:22:55.64\00:22:57.51 to God, to give some time to the Lord, to do 00:22:57.61\00:23:00.68 missionary work-and that's the internship program. 00:23:00.78\00:23:03.14 We also have three other programs that we do. 00:23:03.24\00:23:05.25 And my year, I did the residency program-the 00:23:05.35\00:23:08.75 CAMPUS residency program- and that one is designed 00:23:08.82\00:23:11.09 for pastoral/evangelism major students who are 00:23:11.19\00:23:15.09 young people who feel like they're called to the ministry 00:23:15.16\00:23:17.99 and they want to test that call and see how 00:23:18.09\00:23:20.13 they would line up with it. So, that's a wonderful 00:23:20.20\00:23:23.47 program, 'cause you get to work with the local 00:23:23.53\00:23:25.43 church, you get to work in fields of ministry... But 00:23:25.53\00:23:28.80 with the more specifically- aligned towards doing 00:23:28.90\00:23:32.67 ministry on the public university campus. 00:23:32.74\00:23:34.54 And then we have the scholarship program, 00:23:34.64\00:23:36.71 which Miranda has done that program this year; 00:23:36.81\00:23:39.68 so she not only became an intern, a missionary, 00:23:39.78\00:23:42.65 but then she continued on being a scholar. 00:23:42.72\00:23:45.19 The scholarship program is designed for students 00:23:45.25\00:23:47.49 who are still in school but want to do ministry 00:23:47.59\00:23:50.63 while they're at school- so it's not just getting 00:23:50.73\00:23:53.80 an education which is... For CAMPUS, for us at 00:23:53.93\00:23:57.17 CAMPUS, it's very important for our students to excel 00:23:57.27\00:23:59.60 in the academics, in the areas of academics; 00:23:59.67\00:24:04.21 but also, we want them to excel spiritually. - Yes. 00:24:04.31\00:24:07.41 - And I believe, personally, that it's spiritual suicide 00:24:07.51\00:24:10.45 to not do ministry on a public university campus, 00:24:10.55\00:24:12.61 or to not do ministry at all. - Unpack that 00:24:12.71\00:24:15.05 a little bit. - It- I... You know, the thing 00:24:15.15\00:24:18.15 that you learn when you're doing ministry, for example, 00:24:18.29\00:24:20.66 is that you learn how much you don't know. 00:24:20.76\00:24:23.56 - Yes, yes. - That for some reason, when you're 00:24:23.63\00:24:27.46 ministering to someone else, you begin to learn 00:24:27.56\00:24:29.66 how much God wants to teach you-and there are 00:24:29.76\00:24:32.30 some things that God teaches you only when 00:24:32.37\00:24:34.47 you're actually doing ministry with someone 00:24:34.60\00:24:36.24 else. For example, recently... I'll just- this one story: 00:24:36.34\00:24:41.24 recently, I got up one morning, and I was about 00:24:41.34\00:24:45.28 to leave home for work, 'cause I do work at the 00:24:45.35\00:24:47.98 center. I go to the CAMPUS house. I was leaving my 00:24:48.08\00:24:51.55 house. I got up that morning, and I prayed; 00:24:51.65\00:24:53.36 I said, "Lord, if there is someone that you 00:24:53.46\00:24:55.52 would like me to reach today, please give me 00:24:55.62\00:24:57.86 that opportunity." I walked out of my apartment 00:24:57.96\00:25:00.83 building, came downstairs, and opened my car door; 00:25:00.93\00:25:04.93 turned the key, and my car wouldn't start. My 00:25:05.03\00:25:08.34 car was dead. It was a problem with my car battery... 00:25:08.47\00:25:11.94 and I prayed. I said, "Lord, I can't- I need 00:25:12.04\00:25:14.81 to be at work on time," and there's another young 00:25:14.88\00:25:17.61 man coming out. It was so embarrassing, 'cause 00:25:17.71\00:25:19.51 I was walking out with my cereal in my hand, and... 00:25:19.58\00:25:21.65 [laughter] I was eating breakfast on my way 00:25:21.72\00:25:25.19 out, and this young man was coming out. I said, 00:25:25.29\00:25:28.62 "Hey, my car doesn't start. Can you help me?" Turns 00:25:28.72\00:25:31.19 out he is a professor at the same university at 00:25:31.26\00:25:34.70 Michigan State. And so, we had an exchange. 00:25:34.76\00:25:38.73 He pulled his car up, helped me out, and gave 00:25:38.83\00:25:42.10 me a jump-start. And that very person, we did lunch 00:25:42.17\00:25:45.27 later that week, and we're now doing Bible studies 00:25:45.34\00:25:49.18 together. - Wow. - So, it's interesting. - Wow, 00:25:49.24\00:25:52.21 yeah. - And it's one of those things where, 00:25:52.31\00:25:55.08 to me, when you're doing ministry, your relationship 00:25:55.18\00:25:57.75 with God is revived. It's just on fire. I mean, there's 00:25:57.85\00:26:00.56 so much that you learn. God teaches you a lot. 00:26:00.62\00:26:03.79 And Ellen White, she made a statement once that I 00:26:03.89\00:26:07.60 read once; and she says, "Those who begin with 00:26:07.66\00:26:10.63 the little they know, those who share the little they 00:26:10.73\00:26:13.64 know"-just paraphrasing- "will find the storehouse 00:26:13.74\00:26:17.51 of heaven open to their searching." You know, 00:26:17.61\00:26:21.38 along those lines. So, it's like when you start 00:26:21.44\00:26:24.28 out with just a little that you know to reach 00:26:24.35\00:26:26.18 out to someone else who is in need, you begin to 00:26:26.25\00:26:28.88 see that heaven opens up to you. - Mhm. - So, 00:26:28.95\00:26:31.65 that's what I mean by, "It's spiritual suicide to 00:26:31.75\00:26:34.76 not do ministry." [laughter] - Gotcha, Gotcha. And 00:26:34.86\00:26:36.93 the beautiful thing is, too, is they start asking 00:26:37.03\00:26:38.76 questions, and you might not have the answers 00:26:38.86\00:26:41.36 for those questions, so you have to go find 00:26:41.46\00:26:43.20 the answers for the questions and then come back to them, 00:26:43.26\00:26:45.60 and that's one more thing that you learn. - And it 00:26:45.70\00:26:47.80 revives your spiritual life. - Absolutely. - One 00:26:47.87\00:26:49.90 thing that we believe at CAMPUS is we are a 00:26:50.01\00:26:52.17 Bible-based revival movement in which every single student 00:26:53.27\00:26:56.75 is a missionary, so we inspire them to be 00:26:56.85\00:26:59.18 missionaries. And we are missionaries ourselves! 00:26:59.25\00:27:02.52 I cannot say, "You are a missionary," if I'm not 00:27:02.58\00:27:05.92 myself a missionary, doing the ministry that God has 00:27:05.99\00:27:09.16 called me to do. And so, going back to the programs: 00:27:09.22\00:27:12.49 we do have the internship, we have the scholarship 00:27:12.59\00:27:15.56 and the residency, and then the last one, we 00:27:15.66\00:27:17.30 have the fellowship program, which is young people who 00:27:17.40\00:27:20.87 decide to serve further. They become volunteers, 00:27:20.94\00:27:23.84 and they work with the organization, and try 00:27:23.94\00:27:26.21 to do ministry even more, so... - That's awesome. 00:27:26.27\00:27:28.61 Now, you also have retreats and events, correct? - We 00:27:28.71\00:27:31.28 do. - What are some- what do these 00:27:31.38\00:27:32.98 retreats look like, and what do some of the 00:27:33.08\00:27:34.88 events look like? - You know, I think Julianna 00:27:34.95\00:27:37.69 and Miranda can attest to this, but the college life 00:27:37.79\00:27:40.92 can be very stressful. I mean, it's just intense. 00:27:41.02\00:27:43.99 You go throughout the entire year; you're doing 00:27:44.09\00:27:46.70 your classes and exams, you know. It's a very 00:27:46.80\00:27:50.60 stressful environment, and the influences, not 00:27:50.70\00:27:53.34 to mention... The CAMPUS house is surrounded by- 00:27:53.40\00:27:56.71 what are they called?- fraternities and sororities, 00:27:56.81\00:28:01.24 and we have this big blue house on the block, you 00:28:01.91\00:28:03.91 know? So really, everyone knows the CAMPUS house. 00:28:04.01\00:28:07.45 But nonetheless... So, we try to do retreats 00:28:08.68\00:28:11.69 throughout the year. In every fall, for example, 00:28:11.79\00:28:17.13 we have our high school and college retreat up at 00:28:17.23\00:28:19.59 Camp Au Sable. We invite our students to come away 00:28:19.69\00:28:22.20 for a little bit, and we spend some time together 00:28:22.33\00:28:24.83 studying the Bible, fellowshipping together. 00:28:24.93\00:28:27.34 And then in the winter, we have our CAMPUS 00:28:27.44\00:28:30.47 winter retreat, which is more geared towards our... 00:28:30.57\00:28:33.64 - I hope you go to Florida for that. [laughter] 00:28:33.74\00:28:40.42 - Yeah. Unfortunately, we don't go to Florida 00:28:40.52\00:28:42.05 for that...but Michigan is just as good [laughter] 00:28:42.12\00:28:45.85 in the winter. So, we go back up again to Camp 00:28:45.95\00:28:49.52 Au Sable; and what's amazing about our retreat... Something 00:28:49.62\00:28:53.46 that I didn't mention is that at CAMPUS, we teach something 00:28:53.56\00:28:55.86 that we call Cross-platform Ministry-and what that 00:28:55.93\00:28:59.60 means is we don't hide anything about what we 00:28:59.67\00:29:02.04 do and about who we are. We are very upfront: we are Seventh-day 00:29:02.14\00:29:05.44 Adventists, we believe in the seventh-day Sabbath, 00:29:05.54\00:29:07.51 we believe the Bible and all that it teaches... And so 00:29:07.58\00:29:10.98 whenever we have our retreat- in fact, if I 00:29:11.05\00:29:13.11 recall, most of our retreats have been either between 00:29:13.21\00:29:17.89 40% and 50% non-Adventist. - Really! - Yup. - Oh, that's 00:29:17.99\00:29:22.86 beautiful. - So people come up to our retreats, 00:29:22.92\00:29:25.53 and they get to taste Vegi-Links for the first 00:29:25.63\00:29:27.70 time. [laughs] - Wow. Wow. - It's always an 00:29:27.80\00:29:30.90 interesting experience to see the responses, you know? 00:29:31.00\00:29:33.80 But when it's really, really good food, and 00:29:33.94\00:29:36.30 it's... "I'm so happy you didn't tell me this 00:29:36.40\00:29:38.74 was vegan before!" [laughs] And they really enjoy it. 00:29:38.84\00:29:42.34 We invite them into that space, into that experience, 00:29:42.44\00:29:47.58 because we want them to know we are authentic 00:29:47.68\00:29:50.42 Christians; we don't hide anything from people. This 00:29:50.49\00:29:53.05 is who we are. You know? Being a Seventh-day Adventist 00:29:53.12\00:29:55.82 is not something that we do; it's who we are. - Yes. 00:29:55.92\00:29:58.43 - Being a missionary is not something that we do; 00:29:58.53\00:30:00.46 it's who we are. And so when they begin to see 00:30:00.56\00:30:03.43 that from us, they ask questions, like Miranda 00:30:03.53\00:30:07.14 and like others-that they say, "There's something 00:30:07.20\00:30:10.57 different about this person." And so, that's a few of the 00:30:10.64\00:30:13.78 things that we do. We also have our Collegiate Sabbath 00:30:13.84\00:30:17.05 that happens at our public universities around the 00:30:17.15\00:30:20.08 state of Michigan. And we have also throughout 00:30:20.22\00:30:24.92 the week, we have our small groups that go on. And then 00:30:25.02\00:30:28.42 on the weekends, we have some special Sabbaths 00:30:28.52\00:30:30.96 where we invite our students into our church, and we go 00:30:31.03\00:30:34.13 from there. - And you also have Bible boot camps, too, 00:30:34.20\00:30:36.63 right? - Yeah. Jason, thank you so much for 00:30:36.70\00:30:38.03 asking about Bible Boot Camp. So, Bible Boot Camp is our 00:30:38.07\00:30:41.84 one-week intensive training that we use to begin the 00:30:41.94\00:30:45.77 program, and our students get to interact with the 00:30:45.87\00:30:49.78 Word of God. So, there are two goals that we 00:30:49.91\00:30:51.81 have during Bible Boot Camp: how to study the 00:30:51.88\00:30:54.78 Bible, then also how to teach the Bible to others. 00:30:54.88\00:30:57.29 So, that two-fold mission during that week-so it's 00:30:57.39\00:31:00.29 a very intense one-week training. So, we talk about 00:31:00.39\00:31:02.82 how to do Bible studies and how to study the Bible 00:31:02.92\00:31:06.49 on your own, and things like that. So, it's a really 00:31:06.59\00:31:09.53 good week. We get to have different presenters 00:31:09.60\00:31:11.93 that talk about different topics regarding ministry, 00:31:12.03\00:31:16.24 so... - Nice. Yeah, that sounds crucial; so, it's 00:31:16.34\00:31:18.51 not just... You're teaching them how to rely on the 00:31:18.61\00:31:22.48 Word of God and how to study the Word of God. 00:31:22.54\00:31:24.38 - 'Cause, again, we're a Bible-based revival 00:31:24.51\00:31:26.82 movement, so the Bible has to be at the center 00:31:26.92\00:31:29.12 of everything we do, so... - Absolutely... Absolutely. 00:31:29.18\00:31:31.65 Well, how do you recommend going about-and this is for 00:31:31.72\00:31:34.46 anyone who wants to answer this question-how do you go, 00:31:34.56\00:31:36.93 or how would you recommend going about starting somebody 00:31:37.03\00:31:41.73 on a Bible study? Like, let's say somebody at 00:31:41.83\00:31:44.10 home wants to give their friend or their neighbor 00:31:44.20\00:31:47.34 a Bible study, and they don't even know how to 00:31:47.44\00:31:50.84 approach the subject. How would you go about 00:31:50.94\00:31:53.58 that? - Well, that is a good place to start, too-finding 00:31:53.68\00:31:56.91 people that you know and have a connection with. 00:31:56.98\00:31:58.78 You could try having a spiritual conversation 00:31:59.81\00:32:01.38 with them, finding out where they are, and then leading 00:32:01.45\00:32:04.25 in that way. A good study to start with is trying to 00:32:04.32\00:32:08.86 put their faith in the Word of God. So, a study that 00:32:09.96\00:32:13.09 we use to start with is the Daniel 2 study to 00:32:13.13\00:32:15.26 establish that God's Word has predicted things and 00:32:15.33\00:32:19.27 it has come true, so we can put our faith into 00:32:19.33\00:32:20.87 that. - Ah, gotcha. - So essentially, the Bible 00:32:20.94\00:32:24.51 can be trusted. - Mhm. - And I guess one of the 00:32:24.61\00:32:28.14 challenges that people may have, 'cause I know 00:32:28.21\00:32:30.31 I've had this challenge, Jason, where it's like you're 00:32:30.38\00:32:33.15 sitting down, you have your Bible, there's a 00:32:33.21\00:32:35.08 friend of yours, and you want to get to the point 00:32:35.15\00:32:36.82 where you want that person to also have an interest in 00:32:36.89\00:32:39.75 the Word of God. And it's hard, but the best recommendation 00:32:39.82\00:32:45.09 that I've received is, "Just ask." You know? - Yeah. 00:32:45.19\00:32:48.13 - In the sense that you never know what will happen-what 00:32:48.23\00:32:51.10 the Holy Spirit will do with those words if 00:32:51.20\00:32:52.83 you were to say, "Hey! You know, it will be cool 00:32:52.93\00:32:55.37 if we study the Bible together; what do you 00:32:55.47\00:32:57.01 think?" - Yeah. - You know? "Would you be interested in 00:32:57.07\00:32:59.37 us spending some time, reading the Bible together?" 00:32:59.47\00:33:02.08 And it's interesting, because the gentleman 00:33:02.18\00:33:05.18 that I talked about before, now-the guy who jump-started 00:33:05.28\00:33:09.45 my car-it was really... I was talking with him, 00:33:09.55\00:33:13.05 I shared my testimony (which is also a good 00:33:13.15\00:33:15.02 recommendation; share your testimony, too), and 00:33:15.12\00:33:17.96 I shared my story with him. And then afterward, 00:33:18.03\00:33:19.76 I told him, "I read the Bible as an observer. 00:33:19.86\00:33:22.50 I read to learn." He is a science professor, and 00:33:22.60\00:33:25.93 he is an atheist. - Wow, yeah. - And we're having 00:33:26.03\00:33:28.57 that conversation, and I said, "Hey, would you like 00:33:28.67\00:33:30.71 to observe the Bible with me?" And that was a good 00:33:30.77\00:33:33.91 segue into him studying the Bible with me, so there's 00:33:34.01\00:33:37.01 that transition there that you could use. - So you 00:33:37.08\00:33:39.51 used the buzzword-basically, a scientific buzzword- 00:33:39.58\00:33:42.58 "observation"; "observe the Bible with me." And 00:33:42.68\00:33:46.52 so you were able to transition into that, so he started 00:33:46.62\00:33:49.49 studying with you? - Yeah! We started having spiritual 00:33:49.56\00:33:51.96 conversations. And then after a while... In fact, 00:33:52.03\00:33:54.50 it's interesting, because I bought him a Bible as 00:33:54.56\00:33:56.93 a gift. I gave the Bible to him, and he started... 00:33:56.97\00:33:59.63 because, of course, he doesn't really believe 00:33:59.70\00:34:02.04 in God, so I gave him the Bible, and I told him- 00:34:02.10\00:34:05.17 he asked me, "What's the best place to start 00:34:05.24\00:34:06.71 for someone who doesn't believe?" And I said, "The 00:34:06.78\00:34:09.18 best place to start, for me, would be the book 00:34:09.24\00:34:11.45 of John, because John discloses Jesus Christ 00:34:11.51\00:34:14.02 in a very powerful way." He discloses Jesus Christ 00:34:14.08\00:34:17.89 as more than just a man, but divine. And so, he 00:34:17.95\00:34:20.99 started reading the book of John, and we had a 00:34:21.06\00:34:23.16 meeting. We got back, we were walking together 00:34:23.22\00:34:26.46 when we were talking, and he said to me, "Man, 00:34:26.53\00:34:28.66 the book of John is so powerful. There are so 00:34:28.73\00:34:31.97 many things that I'm learning there." And he's 00:34:32.07\00:34:34.14 like, "Why does John keep repeating the theme, 00:34:34.20\00:34:36.20 'everlasting life'? What does that mean?" And 00:34:36.27\00:34:39.21 so, we were able to get into unpacking what it 00:34:39.27\00:34:41.41 means to have eternal life. He thought it was 00:34:41.48\00:34:44.01 a spiritual? little thing; but nonetheless, 00:34:44.08\00:34:47.28 we were able to get back to the Bible, and I told 00:34:47.32\00:34:50.32 him to keep searching. So, he is still studying 00:34:50.39\00:34:52.02 the Bible! - That is awesome. And he was an atheist. 00:34:52.09\00:34:55.29 - He was an atheist. - Wow. That's amazing. - His 00:34:55.32\00:34:58.49 life is slowly changing. I don't know where he 00:34:58.56\00:35:01.13 is at on the spectrum as far as from atheism 00:35:01.20\00:35:04.90 going to believing. He still says, "I don't know 00:35:04.97\00:35:09.17 how to describe myself at this point," so I won't 00:35:09.24\00:35:11.54 give him a description; but he's learning, so... 00:35:11.61\00:35:14.48 - Yes, yes. And as he continues to study the 00:35:14.54\00:35:16.95 Word of God, he'll just continue to uncover 00:35:17.01\00:35:20.12 truth. - Correct. - Now, you guys are big, clearly, 00:35:20.18\00:35:24.55 on campuses-college campuses-so that means 00:35:24.62\00:35:29.46 you deal with a lot of young people. Now, has 00:35:29.52\00:35:33.46 anybody been to GYC? - Yeah. - Yeah, GYC is 00:35:33.53\00:35:37.63 a youth conference that happens in December, at 00:35:37.73\00:35:40.84 the end of the year. And generally, CAMPUS will take 00:35:40.97\00:35:43.41 a caravan down there. We'll bring students that 00:35:43.47\00:35:45.81 we've been having studies with, and the missionaries 00:35:45.87\00:35:48.28 will go together, and we'll spend time. It's a long 00:35:48.34\00:35:50.68 drive usually, so you have a lot of time together 00:35:50.71\00:35:52.61 in the car; lots of opportunities for 00:35:52.68\00:35:55.08 conversations and getting to know each other on a 00:35:55.15\00:35:57.35 deeper level, and a lot of people give their lives 00:35:57.45\00:36:00.12 to Jesus there at GYC. They make decisions for 00:36:00.19\00:36:02.92 Him, so that's a big blessing for us and 00:36:02.99\00:36:06.13 for them. - I usually go to GYC like, almost 00:36:06.19\00:36:09.40 every year, and it's such an awesome, awesome 00:36:09.50\00:36:13.34 conference, because people ask, "Well, where are the 00:36:13.40\00:36:15.24 young people in the church?" Well if you go to GYC... 00:36:15.30\00:36:18.11 - You will see. - Yeah. You'll see all these 00:36:18.21\00:36:20.58 young people that are on fire for Christ. And wherever 00:36:20.64\00:36:25.01 GYC goes, it's like the city's never left the same 00:36:25.11\00:36:27.62 'cause the outreach, which is, again, why what you 00:36:27.68\00:36:32.12 guys do is so important and so crucial: going on 00:36:32.19\00:36:35.82 these public campuses and trying to reach these students- 00:36:35.89\00:36:40.00 students that may be atheist just like the 00:36:40.03\00:36:42.56 professor-you know. What challenges have you guys 00:36:42.60\00:36:46.47 faced in trying to reach out to students on campus? 00:36:46.53\00:36:50.77 - Well, I know a big challenge for me is 00:36:52.17\00:36:53.51 I'm an introvert, so it's hard when you have all 00:36:53.61\00:36:56.14 these people-50,000 students- and you're going out and trying 00:36:56.18\00:36:59.41 to reach people. It's kind of like, "Ahh! How do I 00:36:59.51\00:37:02.22 do this?" So, it can be intimidating; but one thing 00:37:02.28\00:37:05.65 that I learned through my CAMPUS year and as 00:37:05.72\00:37:08.32 I've been growing as a Christian is that when Jesus 00:37:08.39\00:37:11.93 is in your heart, you do things that you wouldn't 00:37:11.99\00:37:14.10 normally do-and that's crazy to me, because I 00:37:14.16\00:37:17.93 never would've seen myself going out and giving Bible 00:37:18.03\00:37:20.00 studies or speaking upfront, sharing my testimony and 00:37:20.07\00:37:22.50 things like that. But Jesus changes the way that you 00:37:22.57\00:37:25.57 look at people, and you want to help them. And so, 00:37:25.64\00:37:28.44 that was just a way that I overcame the challenge 00:37:28.51\00:37:31.21 of being introverted and being shy. - And you're 00:37:31.28\00:37:34.78 doing a television interview! [laughter] I mean... - That 00:37:34.88\00:37:37.69 is true. - And you're doing a television interview, 00:37:37.75\00:37:40.86 so...yeah. That's proof right there. - Something 00:37:40.92\00:37:43.63 that I also thought about while Julianna was talking 00:37:43.73\00:37:46.53 was the challenge of failure. You know, when you do 00:37:46.63\00:37:49.50 ministry, there are times where you feel like, "Is 00:37:49.56\00:37:52.37 this going to be successful? Is this going to actually work?" 00:37:52.43\00:37:55.70 I remember the first Bible study that I ever did, we 00:37:55.80\00:37:58.27 got to the Sabbath, the conversation surrounding 00:37:58.37\00:38:01.14 it, and that was my last study with that person. 00:38:01.21\00:38:03.24 They literally just closed the door on me, and it 00:38:03.35\00:38:05.81 was a really tough spot for them. I mean, it's 00:38:05.85\00:38:09.68 attesting truth. And so, the challenge of failure 00:38:09.75\00:38:12.49 is a real challenge. One of the encouraging 00:38:12.55\00:38:15.99 quotes that I remember from Christian Service, 00:38:16.09\00:38:17.86 page 100, where Ellen White says, "If you fail 00:38:17.93\00:38:21.10 99 times out of 100 but succeed in bringing one 00:38:21.16\00:38:25.27 soul to Christ, you've done a noble deed for 00:38:25.33\00:38:27.57 the Master's cause. - Mm. - So, I always remember 00:38:27.64\00:38:29.64 that, you know? So, the challenge of failure. We 00:38:29.74\00:38:32.24 must also remember that there is that one person 00:38:32.31\00:38:35.38 out of 100, even though we might fail 99 times 00:38:35.44\00:38:38.95 that the Lord is bringing us to. - Amen. Amen. And 00:38:39.01\00:38:43.28 when you think about Christ and the sacrifice that He made, 00:38:43.35\00:38:47.42 if it were just you on this earth, He would've 00:38:47.52\00:38:50.73 done it. - Exactly. - If it was you, He would've 00:38:50.79\00:38:52.26 done it. If it were just you, He would've done it. 00:38:52.33\00:38:53.90 And if it were just me, He would've done it. 00:38:53.96\00:38:55.80 And if it were just you at home, He would've 00:38:55.86\00:38:58.03 come and died for you because He loves you 00:38:58.17\00:39:00.67 that much...and that's an amazing amount of 00:39:00.74\00:39:04.97 love. What can we talk about with the spring break 00:39:05.04\00:39:10.51 trip? - Yeah, so... - It looks like that's Miranda's 00:39:10.61\00:39:13.92 steal there. [laughter] - So basically, every year, 00:39:14.02\00:39:18.69 the CAMPUS missionaries, they take a spring break 00:39:18.75\00:39:21.32 trip somewhere. They decide where they can 00:39:21.39\00:39:23.53 go, where they can make an impact... And during my 00:39:23.59\00:39:25.86 CAMPUS year, we actually decided to go to Texas to 00:39:25.93\00:39:30.03 help some Cambodian refugees during the hurricane recovery. 00:39:30.10\00:39:34.40 What we ended up doing there was we helped tear 00:39:36.67\00:39:38.47 down houses, and we also helped to build some houses, 00:39:38.57\00:39:41.24 paint some houses, and we really got to reach 00:39:41.31\00:39:43.21 out to the community, pray with the people 00:39:43.28\00:39:44.61 there... A lot of them are from Cambodia, and 00:39:44.65\00:39:47.65 they don't know who God is, and they are new to 00:39:47.72\00:39:50.45 America. So, we were able to pray with them 00:39:50.52\00:39:52.95 and talk with them and just get to know them and show 00:39:53.02\00:39:55.56 them who Jesus is. And one cool thing about that 00:39:55.62\00:39:58.16 trip was that we all got a shirt, and on the front 00:39:58.23\00:40:01.16 it said, "Jesus Army" in big letters, so there 00:40:01.23\00:40:04.00 was... During our week there, I think there was 00:40:04.10\00:40:06.87 about 300 people from different college campuses 00:40:06.94\00:40:09.14 that took time off of their spring breaks to 00:40:09.20\00:40:11.87 come and serve. And so, we would walk down the 00:40:11.91\00:40:14.51 streets-like 300 of us- and we all had "Jesus 00:40:14.58\00:40:16.81 Army" on our shirt. So, when we would go into 00:40:16.88\00:40:19.18 people's homes or when we'd go to help people, 00:40:19.28\00:40:21.08 they would ask, "Who is Jesus? What is Jesus Army?" 00:40:21.15\00:40:23.99 And we really got to make a big impact there. We got 00:40:24.05\00:40:27.36 to help make an impact, so it was a blessing. - Nice. 00:40:27.42\00:40:30.16 What are some other stories in addition to 00:40:30.23\00:40:34.83 that where you've seen lives transformed as a 00:40:34.90\00:40:37.53 result of your ministry? - Something I would like 00:40:37.57\00:40:39.90 to mention: there are some stories that we 00:40:39.97\00:40:41.54 cannot share, but there's one that I thought about, 00:40:41.57\00:40:43.94 because obviously we're kind of still in the process 00:40:44.01\00:40:46.91 of leading people to Christ-so those into 00:40:46.94\00:40:50.41 a closer relationship with Him. Sometime ago, I was 00:40:50.45\00:40:54.92 walking on campus, and I was just meeting people 00:40:55.02\00:40:59.02 and I was doing some flyers. It was a Sabbath afternoon, 00:40:59.09\00:41:01.59 and I ran into someone. I was praying. I was 00:41:01.66\00:41:04.73 reading this book that said something along the 00:41:04.76\00:41:07.66 lines of, "The reason why most revivals on 00:41:07.73\00:41:10.80 public universities failed"- way back in history, there 00:41:10.87\00:41:14.70 were some revivals on college campuses-and 00:41:14.80\00:41:16.91 the author had suggested that the reason was that 00:41:17.81\00:41:19.67 people were reaching the students, but no one was 00:41:19.77\00:41:22.41 reaching the faculty. And so I prayed and I 00:41:22.48\00:41:25.28 said, "Lord, I need to find a faculty that I can 00:41:25.35\00:41:27.82 talk to.' The professor became one, and then 00:41:27.85\00:41:30.99 I started talking with someone else who was 00:41:31.05\00:41:33.86 also in a position there, and I realized from that 00:41:33.92\00:41:38.99 initial meeting that this person does believe in God 00:41:39.06\00:41:43.26 and does believe in prayer, and I never actually thought 00:41:43.33\00:41:46.17 about it. But recently, I was able to go in, 00:41:46.23\00:41:48.37 and I sat down with this person-someone who's 00:41:48.44\00:41:51.61 a vice president for a department. I sat down, 00:41:51.67\00:41:54.94 and I had no agenda for the meeting; I just walked 00:41:55.01\00:41:57.68 in and I said, "I have something to share with 00:41:57.71\00:41:59.88 you from the Bible." The person said, "Go ahead." 00:41:59.91\00:42:02.82 So I felt that was encouraging. - Uh-huh. - So I sat down, 00:42:02.88\00:42:05.92 opened up the Word of God, and began to- I talked about 00:42:05.99\00:42:09.12 some principles from the Bible that leaders need, 00:42:09.19\00:42:11.69 especially in such high positions. And after the 00:42:11.79\00:42:15.00 Bible study, she cried. She broke down and she 00:42:15.06\00:42:19.40 said, "God has sent you here for a reason, and 00:42:19.50\00:42:22.34 I'm so very happy that He brought you into my 00:42:22.40\00:42:25.47 life for example and has allowed us to be 00:42:25.57\00:42:29.24 able to sit together in my office and study 00:42:29.31\00:42:31.21 the Bible." - Yes. - And so, God is doing amazing 00:42:31.28\00:42:34.22 things, and I think Miranda, you could tell us, as well, 00:42:34.28\00:42:37.05 about what happened to you your year. - Yeah. 00:42:37.15\00:42:40.52 Well, as we've already talked about, Julianna, 00:42:41.46\00:42:42.86 she decided to take a year off to do the CAMPUS missionary 00:42:42.92\00:42:45.33 program. And during her year, I was reached out 00:42:45.36\00:42:50.47 to, and that's how I ended up joining the 00:42:50.57\00:42:52.57 church and when I decided to take the year off for CAMPUS. 00:42:52.63\00:42:55.50 Every year, we meet a lot of people and we're 00:42:55.54\00:42:57.91 able to do a lot of Bible studies and really reach 00:42:57.97\00:43:00.48 the community. But during my year, I was able to meet 00:43:00.54\00:43:02.78 a guy named Ahmad. He was a senior at Michigan 00:43:02.84\00:43:05.75 State University, and... pretty much the same 00:43:05.81\00:43:09.62 thing that happened to me when I was a student. We 00:43:09.72\00:43:11.79 reached out to him, and he became part of our 00:43:11.85\00:43:13.66 family. He would come over almost every day and do 00:43:13.72\00:43:17.29 Bible studies with us, and just hang out with us and 00:43:17.36\00:43:19.66 see how we live as Christians. He ended up giving his life 00:43:19.79\00:43:24.27 to Jesus, as well, after studying. And so, it's just 00:43:24.33\00:43:27.37 cool to see the chain reaction, even that 00:43:27.47\00:43:30.71 God talks about in the Bible-how when we win 00:43:30.77\00:43:34.24 souls, those souls go out and they can win other 00:43:34.31\00:43:36.68 souls. It's just powerful to reflect upon, see, how much 00:43:36.78\00:43:40.82 God changed my life through CAMPUS Ministries and then 00:43:40.92\00:43:43.52 how I was able to reach Ahmad. And Ahmad this 00:43:43.65\00:43:46.86 year, he's actually a CAMPUS missionary, too. 00:43:46.96\00:43:49.09 - Wow. - He took HIS year off. He was about to finish 00:43:49.19\00:43:52.09 school, actually. He had two classes left, and he 00:43:52.19\00:43:55.36 decided to take the year off to do Public Campus 00:43:55.43\00:43:57.57 Ministries. And during his year this year, he 00:43:57.63\00:44:00.17 was able to reach out to a lot of people, as well, 00:44:00.27\00:44:02.04 so... - And Ahmad's god sister also got 00:44:02.14\00:44:04.97 baptized, too. - Mhm. - As result of Ahmad standing 00:44:05.07\00:44:08.24 up for Christ. - Wow. - So, he got baptized, and then 00:44:08.34\00:44:11.18 his god sister got baptized, as well. - Wow. So you never 00:44:11.25\00:44:13.95 really realize the impact that spreading the gospel 00:44:14.02\00:44:16.79 has. I can't wait till we get to heaven so 00:44:16.85\00:44:18.95 we can really see... - I have so many questions. 00:44:19.05\00:44:22.49 - Yeah. [laughter] Me too. - So many questions for God. 00:44:22.59\00:44:25.63 - Absolutely. Well, we've got one more song, and we're gonna 00:44:25.76\00:44:28.90 be blessed again by Naomi Jackson. This song is 00:44:28.96\00:44:32.53 entitled, "There Is Hope." 00:44:32.63\00:44:35.04 There is a hope that burns within my heart 00:44:49.12\00:44:56.22 That gives me strength for every passing day 00:44:56.69\00:45:03.26 A glimpse of glory now revealed in meagre part 00:45:03.87\00:45:10.97 Yet drives all doubt away: 00:45:11.21\00:45:17.91 I stand in Christ with sins forgiven 00:45:18.35\00:45:25.79 And Christ in me, the hope of heaven! 00:45:26.05\00:45:32.46 My highest calling and my deepest joy 00:45:32.79\00:45:39.93 To make His will my home 00:45:40.07\00:45:46.78 There is a hope that lifts my weary head 00:45:47.64\00:45:54.02 A consolation strong against despair 00:45:54.45\00:46:01.32 That when this world has plunged me in its deepest pit 00:46:01.62\00:46:08.83 I find the Savior there 00:46:09.16\00:46:15.94 Through present sufferings, future's fears 00:46:16.71\00:46:23.95 He whispers 'courage' in my ear 00:46:24.31\00:46:30.52 For I am safe in everlasting arms 00:46:30.89\00:46:38.03 And they will lead me home 00:46:38.29\00:46:44.70 There is a hope that stands the test of time 00:47:11.89\00:47:18.33 That lifts my eyes beyond the beckoning grave 00:47:18.63\00:47:25.34 To see the matchless beauty of a day divine 00:47:25.67\00:47:32.61 When I behold His face! 00:47:32.71\00:47:39.25 When sufferings cease and sorrows die 00:47:39.62\00:47:46.66 And every longing satisfied 00:47:47.10\00:47:53.20 Then joy unspeakable will flood my soul 00:47:53.54\00:48:00.48 For I am truly home 00:48:00.68\00:48:07.32 When sufferings cease and sorrows die 00:48:07.75\00:48:14.82 And every longing satisfied 00:48:15.12\00:48:21.26 Then joy unspeakable will flood my soul 00:48:21.56\00:48:30.31 For I am truly home 00:48:31.34\00:48:40.82 - Thank you for blessing us with another beautiful 00:48:54.76\00:48:56.56 song, Naomi. I can't believe our time is 00:48:56.70\00:48:59.80 almost over. - Went by too fast. - It did! Time 00:48:59.90\00:49:04.44 has been flying by, and you guys are doing an 00:49:04.54\00:49:06.47 amazing work for the Lord. You know, it's interesting, 00:49:06.57\00:49:10.08 because today, it's like society has... It's like 00:49:10.18\00:49:14.98 morality has gone out the window-and especially on 00:49:15.08\00:49:18.15 these college campuses of public universities 00:49:18.22\00:49:21.36 and all of that stuff. You guys are taking 00:49:21.42\00:49:24.69 the gospel to these public universities and to these 00:49:24.79\00:49:27.96 students, and that is amazing, because I can 00:49:28.06\00:49:33.00 only imagine, like, how much opposition that you 00:49:33.10\00:49:36.77 face on a day-to-day basis. Well, what are 00:49:36.87\00:49:39.77 some of your needs? - You know, I think the 00:49:39.84\00:49:42.84 primary need for us is prayer. We solicit the 00:49:42.94\00:49:46.61 prayers of our friends and our families within 00:49:46.72\00:49:49.28 our church circles, wherever they are-wherever you are- 00:49:49.38\00:49:53.96 we would love to have your prayers. Additionally, we 00:49:54.06\00:49:57.93 want our parents to encourage our young 00:49:57.99\00:50:01.63 people to be faithful to Christ on our public 00:50:01.73\00:50:04.30 universities. But not only that, also we need 00:50:04.40\00:50:08.57 young people: young people who are faithful to Christ, 00:50:08.67\00:50:11.24 young people who want to give their lives to Him 00:50:11.34\00:50:13.91 in a, I guess you could say, a powerful, mighty 00:50:13.98\00:50:19.71 way - want to be used by Him to impact the world 00:50:19.81\00:50:22.88 around them. So, if you're a young person who's 00:50:22.95\00:50:25.62 thinking about taking a year off to do missionary 00:50:25.69\00:50:28.22 work on the public university, we would love to hear from 00:50:28.32\00:50:30.26 you. You could visit us online: CampusHope.com. 00:50:30.33\00:50:33.86 And then the last one is financially. If we can have 00:50:33.96\00:50:38.70 people support financially, that will be a blessing, 00:50:38.80\00:50:41.04 too. Every little bit counts, and that also 00:50:41.10\00:50:44.41 helps, as well. But most importantly, again, prayer 00:50:44.47\00:50:49.18 is what's keeping us. I think it's because we 00:50:49.28\00:50:51.71 have good friends and family members who are 00:50:51.81\00:50:54.12 praying for us that's what is causing the many 00:50:54.22\00:50:57.09 miracles around us, some of which we've shared 00:50:57.15\00:50:59.19 today. - Amen. Yeah. It's gotta take a lot to 00:50:59.29\00:51:03.69 sustain that, and you can never have enough people, 00:51:03.79\00:51:07.13 you can never have enough prayers, and you can never 00:51:07.23\00:51:09.70 have enough financial support, because as we 00:51:09.80\00:51:13.70 continue to come to the close of Earth's history, 00:51:13.80\00:51:16.84 we gotta make sure this Word is getting out rapidly, 00:51:16.91\00:51:19.97 and we want it to be as accessible as possible. 00:51:20.04\00:51:22.64 And so, you guys are doing an amazing job, 00:51:22.74\00:51:26.48 by the grace of God.
