Let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:03:24.30\00:03:27.94 Our loving heavenly Father, 00:03:27.97\00:03:29.70 we are grateful and thankful 00:03:29.74\00:03:32.81 that You have blessed us with this opportunity 00:03:32.84\00:03:35.38 to share of this wonderful topic, 00:03:35.41\00:03:37.65 Righteousness by Faith. 00:03:37.68\00:03:39.05 Yes, Lord. 00:03:39.08\00:03:40.42 We pray that Your Holy Spirit will be upon us 00:03:40.45\00:03:42.28 that we will share those things 00:03:42.32\00:03:44.72 which will bring You honor and glory 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.62 and will be a blessing to Your children 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.59 all over the world. 00:03:48.62\00:03:49.96 We pray that as we discuss this, 00:03:50.03\00:03:52.23 we will be drawn close to You. 00:03:52.26\00:03:54.20 And we pray for a blessing upon all. 00:03:54.23\00:03:56.40 We asked You for these things 00:03:56.43\00:03:57.77 in Jesus' holy and blessed name. 00:03:57.80\00:04:00.14 Amen. Amen. 00:04:00.17\00:04:01.50 Thank you, Father. 00:04:01.54\00:04:02.87 All right, before we really jump 00:04:02.90\00:04:04.24 into defining Righteousness by Faith, 00:04:04.27\00:04:06.91 let's kind of break it apart. 00:04:06.98\00:04:08.61 What does the word righteousness mean 00:04:08.64\00:04:11.08 when God's Word talks about righteousness? 00:04:11.11\00:04:14.82 How do you define righteousness? 00:04:14.85\00:04:17.85 I think righteousness could be defined very simply, 00:04:17.89\00:04:20.16 it is the complete character of God. 00:04:20.19\00:04:23.46 That's good. 00:04:23.53\00:04:24.86 It's the complete character of God, 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.59 the unfaltering, the inerrant, 00:04:26.63\00:04:30.77 the flawless character of God 00:04:30.80\00:04:34.90 is righteousness, 00:04:34.94\00:04:38.37 which means it doesn't belong to any of us. 00:04:38.41\00:04:42.48 Amen. 00:04:42.51\00:04:43.85 So righteousness, 00:04:43.88\00:04:45.81 if you look at a definition, this is perfect. 00:04:45.85\00:04:48.25 I love your definition 00:04:48.28\00:04:49.62 'cause we're gonna tie into that. 00:04:49.65\00:04:51.85 Righteousness is a state of right being, right doing, 00:04:51.89\00:04:57.83 right standing with God. 00:04:57.86\00:05:01.93 So as you said, 00:05:01.96\00:05:03.77 there's only one who makes that qualification. 00:05:03.80\00:05:09.87 Who's ever walked on the earth and who would that be? 00:05:09.90\00:05:12.71 Jesus. Jesus Christ. 00:05:12.74\00:05:14.08 So righteousness is the character of Christ. 00:05:14.11\00:05:17.15 We could say righteousness is a person, really. 00:05:17.18\00:05:20.92 Now what about faith? 00:05:20.95\00:05:22.75 How would you define faith? 00:05:22.78\00:05:24.82 I would like to go 00:05:24.85\00:05:26.22 a little more into righteousness. 00:05:26.25\00:05:28.22 Sure. 00:05:28.26\00:05:29.59 You know, I looked it up on the regular dictionary, 00:05:29.62\00:05:30.99 and it says being morally correct. 00:05:31.03\00:05:33.40 Yes. 00:05:33.43\00:05:35.33 And really righteousness is right doing, doing right. 00:05:35.36\00:05:40.44 And I have a scripture that I like to share 00:05:40.47\00:05:42.84 from Psalm 119:172. 00:05:42.87\00:05:45.77 Psalm 119:172. 00:05:45.81\00:05:48.28 And these are the words I find there. 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.55 "My tongue shall speak of Your word, 00:05:50.58\00:05:53.35 for all Your commandments are righteousness." 00:05:53.42\00:05:57.59 So we have here the scriptures tell us 00:05:57.62\00:05:59.62 that the Commandments of God are righteousness, 00:05:59.65\00:06:03.02 and really, this is the way you can say. 00:06:03.06\00:06:05.99 What verse you said, Psalm 119? 00:06:06.03\00:06:07.60 Psalm 119:172. 00:06:07.63\00:06:09.63 172. I'm in 72, that's why. 00:06:09.66\00:06:12.70 This is the way that righteousness is defined, 00:06:12.73\00:06:14.84 doing right, 00:06:14.87\00:06:16.20 and the law of God helps us to understand 00:06:16.24\00:06:17.87 what righteousness is. 00:06:17.91\00:06:19.71 That's good. That's good. 00:06:19.74\00:06:22.21 Okay, so there's only one 00:06:22.24\00:06:23.58 who's ever perfectly kept the Commandments of God. 00:06:23.65\00:06:28.65 And that was the Last Adam, Jesus Christ 00:06:28.68\00:06:31.29 who was born to us here on earth. 00:06:31.32\00:06:35.09 And we kind of have an idea of now what righteousness is, 00:06:35.12\00:06:40.13 let's just establish something for faith. 00:06:40.20\00:06:44.50 How would we define faith? 00:06:44.53\00:06:50.01 Well, outside of the Hebrews 11:1 definition 00:06:50.04\00:06:52.81 which, you know, it even responds with saying, 00:06:52.84\00:06:55.64 faith is, and so it doesn't even give any room 00:06:55.68\00:06:59.95 for speculation says faith is, you know, 00:07:00.02\00:07:05.32 the substance of things hoped 00:07:05.35\00:07:06.79 for the evidence of things not seen. 00:07:06.86\00:07:09.09 But also I'd like to add to that, 00:07:09.12\00:07:10.46 faith is the only walk that we can have 00:07:10.53\00:07:14.20 in order to know 00:07:14.23\00:07:15.66 by Christ's righteousness that we are walking 00:07:15.70\00:07:18.57 in His righteousness is by faith, 00:07:18.60\00:07:21.07 it's a transaction of faith 00:07:21.10\00:07:23.20 'cause we can't see the transaction taking place. 00:07:23.24\00:07:25.74 But when we accept His righteousness, 00:07:25.77\00:07:30.68 then all of a sudden, the just shall live by faith. 00:07:30.75\00:07:35.18 And you can't be just except 00:07:35.22\00:07:37.49 He imputes His righteousness to us, justification, 00:07:37.52\00:07:42.96 then imparts His righteousness to us, sanctification, 00:07:42.99\00:07:47.20 so our whole walk is a walk of faith 00:07:47.23\00:07:49.83 because we haven't seen it happen. 00:07:49.86\00:07:51.80 So can we bring this down to a fifth grade level? 00:07:51.83\00:07:57.01 Can we say that 00:07:57.04\00:07:59.24 faith in essence is trusting God? 00:07:59.27\00:08:02.51 Oh, yeah. 00:08:02.54\00:08:03.88 Trust is the foundation for faith, isn't it? 00:08:03.95\00:08:05.98 I believe that's, perhaps these, like you said, 00:08:06.01\00:08:08.85 for someone to easily understand 00:08:08.88\00:08:11.05 faith is trust and perfect confidence 00:08:11.09\00:08:17.13 in something or someone. 00:08:17.16\00:08:20.20 Okay, so we understand what righteousness is, 00:08:20.23\00:08:23.97 and where we're just gonna say righteousness is a person, 00:08:24.00\00:08:27.27 faith is trusting in God. 00:08:27.34\00:08:29.77 So when the Bible talks about righteousness by faith, 00:08:29.80\00:08:33.31 you've already introduced those two terms. 00:08:33.38\00:08:35.51 Let's talk about what is righteousness by faith? 00:08:35.54\00:08:40.72 When we say imputed righteousness 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.39 and I believe the word imputed 00:08:43.42\00:08:45.89 is I know is used in the scriptures. 00:08:45.92\00:08:48.72 I don't think we find the word imparted is implied. 00:08:48.76\00:08:52.53 But when we talk about 00:08:52.56\00:08:55.13 the justification by faith that's imputed. 00:08:55.16\00:08:59.20 What is that word imputed mean? 00:08:59.23\00:09:01.57 That means I had a debt I couldn't pay. 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.31 And somebody paid it. 00:09:04.34\00:09:05.94 Fifth grade. Fifth grade. 00:09:05.97\00:09:07.48 Exactly. 00:09:07.51\00:09:09.01 I had a debt I could never pay. 00:09:09.04\00:09:11.58 And Jesus paid it. 00:09:11.61\00:09:12.95 And is, you know, I like to think of, 00:09:12.98\00:09:15.22 if you're a visual person, think of your bank account. 00:09:15.25\00:09:18.62 Here, I've got a bank account that's overdrawn. 00:09:18.65\00:09:21.66 So far, like you said, I could never pay this debt. 00:09:21.69\00:09:24.59 And actually what happened in an accounting sense, 00:09:24.63\00:09:28.33 imputed means that Christ's righteousness 00:09:28.36\00:09:33.00 is taken from His account and deposited into mine, 00:09:33.03\00:09:38.01 to bring me to that point, 00:09:38.04\00:09:40.31 that I mean, He reconciled my account, 00:09:40.38\00:09:43.85 if you will reconciled me to God. 00:09:43.88\00:09:47.02 And when He imputed His righteousness, 00:09:47.05\00:09:50.09 He deposited His righteousness into my account. 00:09:50.12\00:09:54.36 It's really an accounting term, isn't it, imputed? 00:09:54.39\00:09:56.56 Right. 00:09:56.59\00:09:57.93 And the text that emphasizes this whole, 00:09:57.96\00:09:59.86 the debt that we could never pay 00:09:59.89\00:10:01.80 is Ephesians 2:8-9, 00:10:01.83\00:10:03.37 and it's a very familiar passage. 00:10:03.40\00:10:05.13 It brings in another component of righteousness 00:10:05.17\00:10:07.54 which is God's grace, 00:10:07.57\00:10:08.94 "For by grace you are saved through faith, 00:10:08.97\00:10:12.51 and that not of yourselves, 00:10:12.54\00:10:13.98 it is the gift of God, not of works, 00:10:14.01\00:10:16.31 lest anyone should boast." 00:10:16.34\00:10:18.68 To expand a little further here, 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.22 one of the reasons 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.02 why I think this topic is so really important 00:10:22.05\00:10:23.69 is because as a people 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.55 that honor the Commandments of God, 00:10:26.59\00:10:28.52 The Ten Commandments of God and, you know, 00:10:28.56\00:10:29.89 you're one of the authors of the book, 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.26 Ten Commandments Twice Removed. 00:10:31.29\00:10:33.16 As a people Seventh-day Adventist Movement 00:10:33.19\00:10:36.10 that honors and recognizes the validity of the law of God, 00:10:36.13\00:10:39.80 The Ten Commandments. Amen. 00:10:39.83\00:10:41.17 We're not talking about the ceremonial laws, 00:10:41.20\00:10:42.67 and we're not talking about feasts, 00:10:42.70\00:10:44.81 but we honor the validity and we recognize 00:10:44.84\00:10:47.58 how important The Ten Commandments of God is. 00:10:47.61\00:10:49.78 It's a transcript of His character. 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.88 One of the challenges we face is that 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.55 there are people that might say, 00:10:53.62\00:10:55.68 you can't keep the law, 00:10:55.72\00:10:57.09 and in fact, they are correct 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.02 because how can in it, 00:10:59.05\00:11:00.39 how can a corrupt person live in harmony 00:11:00.46\00:11:02.22 with an incorruptible law? 00:11:02.26\00:11:05.06 Paul made it clear in Romans Chapter 7, 00:11:05.09\00:11:06.80 he says, "The law is holy." 00:11:06.83\00:11:09.00 The law is holy, 00:11:09.03\00:11:10.37 the commandment holy, just and good. 00:11:10.40\00:11:11.80 He says, "But I am carnal, sold unto sin." 00:11:11.83\00:11:15.00 And so he says, 00:11:15.04\00:11:17.74 "I know what that is, but I know what I am." 00:11:17.77\00:11:20.48 And so he looks at this perfect law 00:11:20.51\00:11:22.88 from the vantage point of an imperfect man. 00:11:22.91\00:11:25.98 And then he concludes, "O wretched man that I am! 00:11:26.01\00:11:29.48 Who'll deliver me from the body of this death?" 00:11:29.52\00:11:31.55 So Paul looks at the inability of man 00:11:31.59\00:11:34.59 to live in harmony with the law of God. 00:11:34.62\00:11:36.49 But then he introduces where the power comes from, 00:11:36.52\00:11:39.53 in Romans Chapter 8. 00:11:39.56\00:11:41.03 And so here we are. 00:11:41.06\00:11:42.63 One of the challenges 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.00 and there's the term that I was, 00:11:44.07\00:11:45.40 I mean, I like to read and there's a... 00:11:45.43\00:11:47.14 Recently I was reading in Oswald Chambers' Devotion 00:11:47.17\00:11:49.57 that talked about gracious uncertainty, 00:11:49.60\00:11:53.88 gracious uncertainty. 00:11:53.91\00:11:55.24 Now the Jews, 00:11:55.28\00:11:56.98 and I'm talking about the Jewish leaders 00:11:57.05\00:11:58.68 had an arrogant certainty. 00:11:58.71\00:12:02.25 They had an arrogant certainty. 00:12:02.28\00:12:03.62 That's why they locked everybody else out. 00:12:03.69\00:12:05.42 They thought that they kept the law, 00:12:05.45\00:12:07.09 the law was for them. 00:12:07.16\00:12:08.49 They kept the law, even the rich young ruler 00:12:08.52\00:12:10.06 came to Christ and said, 00:12:10.13\00:12:11.46 "I've kept that since I was a young man. 00:12:11.49\00:12:12.83 So what's the problem?" 00:12:12.86\00:12:14.63 And he challenged him where he was lacking, 00:12:14.66\00:12:18.20 and that is compassion for others. 00:12:18.23\00:12:19.97 So for those of us who honor the Commandments of God, 00:12:20.04\00:12:22.30 in particularly highlight the Sabbath, 00:12:22.34\00:12:25.77 there's a tendency and this has happened 00:12:25.81\00:12:27.74 in our denomination. 00:12:27.78\00:12:29.31 There's a tendency by some 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.95 who when a person comes in from the outside, 00:12:31.98\00:12:34.32 we often deal with them as a commandment breaker 00:12:34.35\00:12:37.12 because we see ourselves as commandment keeper, 00:12:37.19\00:12:39.72 when that's arrogance certainty. 00:12:39.75\00:12:41.86 Yes, good. 00:12:41.89\00:12:44.33 We should have gracious certainty, 00:12:44.36\00:12:48.03 not gracious uncertainty, 00:12:48.06\00:12:49.96 which is a different topic altogether. 00:12:50.00\00:12:51.33 I'm working on the sermon for that, 00:12:51.37\00:12:52.70 you'll hear about that later on. 00:12:52.73\00:12:54.07 But we should have a gracious certainty, 00:12:54.14\00:12:56.00 which is this. 00:12:56.04\00:12:57.41 The certainty is in Christ's righteousness. 00:12:57.44\00:13:00.01 Amen. 00:13:00.08\00:13:01.41 Not in our own because if it was in our own 00:13:01.44\00:13:03.45 we could boast and say, 00:13:03.48\00:13:04.85 I've done that since I was a young man, 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.61 what's the problem? 00:13:06.65\00:13:07.98 Yeah. What do I need to do? 00:13:08.02\00:13:09.35 What else do I need to do to be saved? 00:13:09.38\00:13:10.72 So a lot of times people look at Seventh-day Adventist, says, 00:13:10.79\00:13:12.92 those who keep the law 00:13:12.95\00:13:15.19 or make other people feel like they are surely lost 00:13:15.22\00:13:18.56 because they don't keep the law. 00:13:18.59\00:13:20.10 Well, there is a happy medium, 00:13:20.13\00:13:21.63 there's a difference between arrogant certainty 00:13:21.66\00:13:27.34 and complete neglect. 00:13:27.37\00:13:29.04 And so you could neglect the law of God and be lost. 00:13:29.07\00:13:32.67 But on the other side, 00:13:32.71\00:13:34.08 you could be so sure you're keeping it 00:13:34.11\00:13:35.44 and still be lost. 00:13:35.48\00:13:36.81 Amen. 00:13:36.85\00:13:38.18 So that's where the righteousness of Christ 00:13:38.21\00:13:39.55 comes in. 00:13:39.58\00:13:40.92 So we know that the Bible tells us 00:13:40.95\00:13:42.95 that we are saved by grace alone, 00:13:42.98\00:13:46.52 not of works that any man should boast. 00:13:46.55\00:13:48.69 And, you know what, we have to be careful. 00:13:48.72\00:13:50.83 I have to be careful, we all do. 00:13:50.86\00:13:53.13 Is that because we do believe 00:13:53.16\00:13:55.16 and we're gonna get into that in a moment 00:13:55.20\00:13:57.47 on what purpose does the law serve? 00:13:57.50\00:14:00.84 What purpose do works serve? 00:14:00.87\00:14:03.00 If we are saved by grace alone, by righteousness, by faith, 00:14:03.04\00:14:08.64 then how does the law work in here, 00:14:08.68\00:14:11.88 but we have to be so cautious that you can say, 00:14:11.91\00:14:15.35 yes, I understand righteousness by faith, 00:14:15.38\00:14:17.89 I understand that it's Christ's righteousness 00:14:17.92\00:14:20.89 credited to my account. 00:14:20.96\00:14:23.32 But if I've got to keep these Commandments too 00:14:23.36\00:14:27.10 'cause I got to save myself. 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.53 So some people end up making it grace plus works. 00:14:28.56\00:14:33.64 The Bible's clear, it is grace alone. 00:14:33.67\00:14:36.50 That's right. Grace through faith. 00:14:36.54\00:14:38.24 Grace through faith, through trusting in God. 00:14:38.27\00:14:40.68 Johnny, you look like you're bursting. 00:14:40.71\00:14:42.04 Well, you know, you have people approaching the Lord, 00:14:42.08\00:14:46.92 when they have a need, a petition, a request. 00:14:46.95\00:14:50.12 And sometimes they go back and they're like, 00:14:50.19\00:14:53.69 well, I'm doing A, B, C, and D, and E, F, and G. 00:14:53.76\00:14:56.06 Yes. 00:14:56.09\00:14:57.43 The Lord is gonna bless me because I am doing this, 00:14:57.46\00:14:59.26 this, and this, and this. 00:14:59.29\00:15:01.13 But Jesus didn't say, you're gonna get these things 00:15:01.16\00:15:04.40 because you're doing A, B, C, D, E, F, G, 00:15:04.43\00:15:07.47 whatever these things are in your mind that you say, 00:15:07.54\00:15:10.04 I've done these things. So the Lord is gonna bless me. 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.84 Because Jesus says, 00:15:12.87\00:15:14.28 "Ask, believing, ask and believe, 00:15:14.31\00:15:17.85 believe in the Lord." 00:15:17.88\00:15:19.21 We're talking about faith, trust, 00:15:19.25\00:15:20.62 believe in the Lord, confidence in the Lord. 00:15:20.65\00:15:24.89 But when we look, 00:15:24.92\00:15:27.06 if we ever come to the point of thinking 00:15:27.09\00:15:30.23 that the way we are living is going to earn us, 00:15:30.26\00:15:35.83 or that we have a title, or a right to salvation, 00:15:35.86\00:15:41.60 we are, we have entered into the description 00:15:41.64\00:15:43.94 given in Revelation 3. 00:15:44.01\00:15:45.47 Yes. 00:15:45.51\00:15:46.88 Of the people that say, you know, I am rich, 00:15:46.91\00:15:51.88 and increased with goods, I have need of nothing. 00:15:51.91\00:15:55.32 When in reality we are blind, 00:15:55.35\00:15:57.29 miserable, poor, and wretched, and naked, 00:15:57.32\00:16:00.36 the Bible says when it talks about naked 00:16:00.39\00:16:01.86 it's not talking about just regular clothing, 00:16:01.89\00:16:03.73 it's talking about the justice and righteousness of Christ. 00:16:03.76\00:16:07.40 Amen. 00:16:07.43\00:16:08.76 We are destitute of righteousness. 00:16:08.80\00:16:10.87 And that's why I like to read this, 00:16:10.90\00:16:12.70 Isaiah 64:6, which I know, 00:16:12.73\00:16:15.20 you both having notes I'm sure. 00:16:15.24\00:16:16.57 Absolutely. Of our conditions. 00:16:16.60\00:16:18.64 He says in Isaiah 64:6, "But we are all," 00:16:18.67\00:16:23.75 that's including everybody, I don't know, 00:16:23.78\00:16:26.08 if anyone listening is thinking, 00:16:26.11\00:16:27.65 "Oh, I'm not part of it." 00:16:27.68\00:16:29.02 I'm not part of all. 00:16:29.05\00:16:30.39 "But we are all like an unclean thing, 00:16:30.42\00:16:33.25 and all our righteousness are as filthy rags. 00:16:33.29\00:16:37.83 We are all fade as a leaf, and our iniquities 00:16:37.86\00:16:41.16 are, like the wind, have taken us away." 00:16:41.20\00:16:43.77 So our righteousness, the very best that we can do, 00:16:43.80\00:16:49.04 is like filthy rags before the Lord. 00:16:49.07\00:16:51.64 Because nothing that we can do 00:16:51.67\00:16:54.11 is will be of sufficient to say, 00:16:54.18\00:16:56.38 oh, while you have done all these marvelous things, 00:16:56.41\00:16:59.45 you have a right to be saved. 00:16:59.48\00:17:01.92 No, it is all the grace, the righteousness of Christ, 00:17:01.95\00:17:05.62 by grace are we saved through faith, 00:17:05.65\00:17:07.66 not of ourselves. 00:17:07.69\00:17:09.02 It is the gift of God. 00:17:09.06\00:17:10.39 And we're talking again, Ephesians Chapter 3. 00:17:10.43\00:17:14.73 And so we were gonna emphasize this over and over, 00:17:14.76\00:17:17.87 it says, it is Christ. 00:17:17.90\00:17:19.30 It is His righteousness that allows us, blesses us 00:17:19.33\00:17:22.70 with the opportunities for salvation. 00:17:22.74\00:17:24.11 You know what I think? 00:17:24.14\00:17:25.71 I think it is hard for mankind, 00:17:25.74\00:17:30.55 for our pride to submit to the idea 00:17:30.58\00:17:35.15 that there's nothing that we can do 00:17:35.18\00:17:36.52 to save ourself. 00:17:36.55\00:17:38.19 I think that, you know, 00:17:38.22\00:17:39.82 that's why so many people have problems 00:17:39.85\00:17:41.82 with righteousness by faith, 00:17:41.86\00:17:43.76 is they think, well, you know, 00:17:43.83\00:17:46.73 I'm so much better than so and so 00:17:46.80\00:17:48.60 because I do this, I tithe, then I go, you know, 00:17:48.63\00:17:51.80 I eat a vegan diet, I do that. 00:17:51.83\00:17:54.34 But what you just read Isaiah 64:6, 00:17:54.37\00:17:58.14 shows us that nothing, 00:17:58.17\00:18:01.71 nothing we can do can save ourselves. 00:18:01.74\00:18:07.52 It is a gift of God 00:18:07.55\00:18:09.78 not of works that any should boast. 00:18:09.82\00:18:12.39 Christ is our righteousness. 00:18:12.42\00:18:15.56 And the only thing you can do, 00:18:15.59\00:18:17.43 I'm not gonna say there's nothing you can do. 00:18:17.46\00:18:19.26 You know what God requires of you 00:18:19.29\00:18:21.40 that day by day 00:18:21.43\00:18:23.57 you really can't even surrender by yourself. 00:18:23.60\00:18:26.50 But day by day, 00:18:26.53\00:18:27.87 you go before the Lord and say, Lord, I need You. 00:18:27.90\00:18:31.31 And I invite You into my life. 00:18:31.34\00:18:34.94 Please work Your will in my life today. 00:18:34.98\00:18:38.08 And then the righteousness we have to trust God 00:18:38.11\00:18:41.85 and believe the righteousness of faith is ours. 00:18:41.88\00:18:46.39 And we're gonna get, don't, if you're at home saying, 00:18:46.42\00:18:49.02 wait a minute, wait a minute, the Bible talks of works, 00:18:49.06\00:18:51.43 we're gonna get to that in just a moment. 00:18:51.46\00:18:53.90 But before we do, 00:18:53.93\00:18:55.33 John, did you have something you wanted to add right there? 00:18:55.36\00:18:57.47 Yeah, I do. 00:18:57.50\00:18:58.83 And I'm so glad you brought that up 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.20 because what I was gonna do is show us our condition. 00:19:00.24\00:19:02.77 You know, we're not only is our righteousness 00:19:02.80\00:19:05.27 like filthy rags, 00:19:05.31\00:19:06.68 there's none who does good. 00:19:06.71\00:19:08.04 That's right. 00:19:08.08\00:19:09.41 All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. 00:19:09.44\00:19:10.85 You know, we are all in this hopeless condition. 00:19:10.88\00:19:13.52 Even when we think we're right, 00:19:13.55\00:19:15.42 we are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked. 00:19:15.45\00:19:17.49 We are unaware of our condition. 00:19:17.52\00:19:19.02 And then finally, 00:19:19.05\00:19:20.46 even our heart is deceitful and desperately wicked. 00:19:20.49\00:19:23.93 Amen. 00:19:23.96\00:19:25.29 That's our hopeless condition we find ourselves in. 00:19:25.33\00:19:27.80 But here's one of the major reasons 00:19:27.83\00:19:29.56 why we can never boast about our righteousness 00:19:29.60\00:19:31.57 even as Christians because, you know, Paul in Romans 7:17, 00:19:31.60\00:19:34.94 he talked about the futility of his condition. 00:19:34.97\00:19:37.24 He says, when he looked at his sinful condition, 00:19:37.31\00:19:40.11 and when he looked at being grabbed, 00:19:40.18\00:19:41.51 and embraced, and handcuffed by sin, 00:19:41.54\00:19:44.05 he said, it is no longer I who do it 00:19:44.08\00:19:46.31 but sin that dwells in me. 00:19:46.35\00:19:47.75 Amen. 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.12 He recognized, I'm captured by sin, 00:19:49.15\00:19:50.49 I don't even have the right to say no 00:19:50.52\00:19:51.85 because sin is now controlling me 00:19:51.89\00:19:53.22 and doing whatever it wants to do. 00:19:53.25\00:19:54.89 But he went from it is no longer I who do it, 00:19:54.92\00:19:58.09 but sin that dwells in me, 00:19:58.13\00:20:00.00 to submitting to Christ, dying to self, and saying, 00:20:00.03\00:20:04.00 it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me. 00:20:04.07\00:20:06.43 Absolutely. Amen. 00:20:06.47\00:20:07.80 So here's the point, if you don't live, 00:20:07.84\00:20:09.27 this is a powerful here, this is a powerful concept. 00:20:09.30\00:20:14.38 Death to self is a prerequisite, 00:20:14.41\00:20:18.88 is an imperative prerequisite, 00:20:18.91\00:20:22.62 to accepting the righteousness of Jesus. 00:20:22.65\00:20:25.32 Amen. 00:20:25.35\00:20:26.69 Death to self is an imperative prerequisite. 00:20:26.76\00:20:30.23 You've got to admit your condition 00:20:30.26\00:20:32.29 before you can even hope to find 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.96 aid outside of yourself. 00:20:35.00\00:20:37.47 Because if we look at ourselves and say, 00:20:37.50\00:20:39.27 as the New Age says, as Buddhism, 00:20:39.30\00:20:42.90 as many of these Eastern religions say, 00:20:42.94\00:20:46.01 Oh, look within yourself, and you'll find peace. 00:20:46.04\00:20:48.68 You know, if I look within myself, 00:20:48.71\00:20:50.08 I find. 00:20:50.15\00:20:51.75 Anything but. 00:20:51.78\00:20:53.11 What do you find? 00:20:53.15\00:20:54.48 We know that we can't look in ourselves and find anything. 00:20:54.52\00:20:56.92 The only hope for us is to get rid of a mirror. 00:20:56.99\00:21:00.06 Yeah. And the law of God. 00:21:00.09\00:21:01.89 That's why many people want to get rid of God's law. 00:21:01.92\00:21:04.03 It's a mirror, Shelley. Yes. Absolutely. 00:21:04.06\00:21:06.06 That shows us our condition. 00:21:06.09\00:21:07.43 So let's establish one thing, one, we are wretched, 00:21:07.50\00:21:09.86 we can't save ourselves, we are unrighteous, we're not. 00:21:09.90\00:21:12.13 But there's nothing good about us. 00:21:12.17\00:21:13.64 We can on our best day earn his righteousness. 00:21:13.67\00:21:18.07 Secondly, to expand it. 00:21:18.11\00:21:22.41 There's nothing wrong with God's law. 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.65 Okay, there's nothing wrong with The Ten Commandments. 00:21:24.68\00:21:27.02 The problem is us. 00:21:27.05\00:21:28.52 But then thirdly, 00:21:28.55\00:21:30.59 since the Commandments of God are perfect, 00:21:30.62\00:21:33.46 ready for bulletin, they can't even save us. 00:21:33.49\00:21:35.76 That's right. 00:21:35.79\00:21:37.13 The commandments, 00:21:37.16\00:21:38.49 there's nothing wrong with them, 00:21:38.53\00:21:39.86 but they can't save us. 00:21:39.89\00:21:41.23 Can I read this quick text? 00:21:41.26\00:21:42.60 Sure. Look at this. 00:21:42.63\00:21:43.97 And Paul in Galatians makes this very clear, 00:21:44.00\00:21:45.93 Galatians 2:21. 00:21:45.97\00:21:50.11 Because, you know, 00:21:50.14\00:21:51.47 "For by grace are we saved through faith." 00:21:51.51\00:21:52.84 Ephesians 2:8-9. 00:21:52.87\00:21:54.34 But Paul says in Galatians 2:21, 00:21:54.38\00:21:56.85 "I do not set aside the grace of God," I can't, 00:21:56.88\00:22:00.52 for if righteousness comes through the law, 00:22:00.55\00:22:03.59 then Christ died in vain." 00:22:03.62\00:22:05.15 Absolutely. 00:22:05.19\00:22:06.52 So while we're saying we're having a, 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.56 you know, we talked about The Ten Commandments 00:22:08.59\00:22:09.92 book you wrote Ten Commandments Twice Removed, 00:22:09.96\00:22:11.29 we've had a couple of Ten Commandments Weekends. 00:22:11.33\00:22:13.53 And where we've talked about, 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.16 you know, 14 sermons on The Ten Commandments. 00:22:15.20\00:22:17.63 Whenever I hear Ten Commandments Weekend, 00:22:17.67\00:22:19.30 I wanna jump up and say, 00:22:19.33\00:22:21.04 "Wait, wait, wait, 00:22:21.07\00:22:22.44 as we're going through The Ten Commandments, 00:22:22.47\00:22:24.01 can we say we can't keep them?" 00:22:24.04\00:22:26.17 Yeah. 00:22:26.21\00:22:27.58 Can somebody say 00:22:27.61\00:22:29.31 we can't keep them apart from Christ? 00:22:29.34\00:22:32.48 So, John, the requisite you talked about a moment ago. 00:22:32.51\00:22:35.28 Here it is, real quickly. 00:22:35.32\00:22:36.69 You said, there's nothing we could do 00:22:36.72\00:22:38.05 to earn the grace of God or His blessings. 00:22:38.09\00:22:40.06 That's correct. 00:22:40.09\00:22:41.42 But here's a quandary in that. 00:22:41.46\00:22:42.79 1 John 3:22, 00:22:42.82\00:22:45.09 "Whatever we ask we receive from Him, 00:22:45.13\00:22:48.13 because we keep His commandments 00:22:48.16\00:22:49.83 and do those things 00:22:49.86\00:22:51.23 that are pleasing in His sight." 00:22:51.27\00:22:52.60 Now you have to ask yourself the question, 00:22:52.63\00:22:53.97 didn't you just say 00:22:54.04\00:22:55.37 you can't keep the Commandments of God? 00:22:55.40\00:22:56.74 Well, now, Shelley, this is a bridge 00:22:56.77\00:22:58.11 between human ability and God's enabling's. 00:22:58.14\00:23:01.48 Amen. 00:23:01.51\00:23:02.84 When He comes in, 00:23:02.88\00:23:04.25 I can do all things through Christ 00:23:04.28\00:23:05.61 who strengthens me. 00:23:05.65\00:23:06.98 So when I'm void of, 00:23:07.02\00:23:08.35 when I'm empty of Christ, I am lost. 00:23:08.38\00:23:10.49 But when I'm filled with Christ, 00:23:10.52\00:23:12.55 that's where His enabling's come in, 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.69 and this text now has validity 00:23:14.72\00:23:20.50 when I asked the Lord for His blessings. 00:23:20.53\00:23:22.93 Yeah. 00:23:22.96\00:23:24.30 I wanted to add Romans 3:20. Yes. 00:23:24.33\00:23:27.04 That goes right with what you're saying. 00:23:27.07\00:23:28.44 When Paul says, 00:23:28.47\00:23:29.80 "Therefore by the deeds of the law 00:23:29.84\00:23:31.44 no flesh will be justified in His sight, 00:23:31.47\00:23:36.78 for by the law knowledge of sin is known, 00:23:36.85\00:23:41.98 by the law is the knowledge of sin." 00:23:42.02\00:23:44.32 So the law can't change us. 00:23:44.35\00:23:48.79 The law shows us our need to change. 00:23:48.82\00:23:52.33 The law can't save us. 00:23:52.36\00:23:55.46 It shows us our need for a savior. 00:23:55.50\00:23:59.93 And if you could just get this in your mind that, 00:23:59.97\00:24:06.54 you know, you were talking about, 00:24:06.57\00:24:07.98 let's look at Romans 8 00:24:08.01\00:24:09.41 because you said death to self is a prerequisite. 00:24:09.44\00:24:13.52 Guess what? 00:24:13.55\00:24:14.88 I can't even die to myself without the grace of God. 00:24:14.92\00:24:18.65 All I can do in... 00:24:18.69\00:24:21.39 Trust me, anytime I get off of this path. 00:24:21.42\00:24:24.06 If I know that when I get up in the morning, 00:24:24.13\00:24:27.13 and I'll just say, Lord, "Here am I, I need you. 00:24:27.20\00:24:31.33 I wanna rely on You today, guide me, 00:24:31.37\00:24:34.47 let Your will be done in my life. 00:24:34.50\00:24:36.20 Take my heart for I can't give it." 00:24:36.24\00:24:38.57 Romans 8:13 says this, 00:24:38.61\00:24:43.75 "If you live according to the flesh," 00:24:43.78\00:24:48.18 what's gonna happen? You'll die. 00:24:48.22\00:24:49.65 Die. "You will die." 00:24:49.68\00:24:51.02 And He's talking about the second death here. 00:24:51.05\00:24:54.29 "But if by the Spirit you put to death 00:24:54.32\00:25:01.06 the misdeeds of the body, you will live." 00:25:01.10\00:25:04.57 Now look at that scripture, "If by the Spirit," 00:25:04.60\00:25:08.47 what is the force? 00:25:08.50\00:25:09.94 What is the power? 00:25:10.01\00:25:11.34 What is the motivating energy? 00:25:11.37\00:25:15.08 It's the Holy Spirit. 00:25:15.11\00:25:17.71 So "If by the Spirit 00:25:17.75\00:25:20.62 you put to death the deeds of the body." 00:25:20.65\00:25:23.89 It is only as I trust God to work in me. 00:25:23.92\00:25:29.22 You know, 00:25:29.26\00:25:30.63 when He says Luke 9:23 pick up your cross daily 00:25:30.66\00:25:33.40 and we're supposed to be dying to self-day by day. 00:25:33.43\00:25:37.00 You know, what I used to drive myself crazy 00:25:37.07\00:25:39.10 trying to die to self. 00:25:39.13\00:25:40.47 I used to think, oh, Lord, what's wrong with me, 00:25:40.54\00:25:42.27 I can't do. 00:25:42.30\00:25:43.84 I can't do it by myself though. 00:25:43.91\00:25:45.34 It has to be me cooperating with the Spirit to saying. 00:25:45.37\00:25:50.65 lead me by Your good spirit, teach me Your ways. 00:25:50.68\00:25:54.02 And as we surrender that control 00:25:54.05\00:25:57.32 to the Holy Spirit, 00:25:57.39\00:25:59.25 I can't crucify, 00:25:59.29\00:26:00.66 I can't nail my own hands on there. 00:26:00.69\00:26:03.12 So... I like that. 00:26:03.16\00:26:04.49 You can't nail yourself to the cross. 00:26:04.53\00:26:05.86 No! 00:26:05.89\00:26:07.23 So even death to self, yes, it's a prerequisite, 00:26:07.30\00:26:10.10 but it's a gift from God. 00:26:10.17\00:26:12.10 That's right. Everything's a gift from God. 00:26:12.13\00:26:13.64 It is goodness of God that leads us to repent. 00:26:13.67\00:26:15.67 Amen. That's right. That's right. 00:26:15.70\00:26:17.41 So we as individuals 00:26:17.44\00:26:19.77 must all come to the point of choosing 00:26:19.81\00:26:23.35 'cause you're talking about choice. 00:26:23.38\00:26:24.71 Yes. Yes. 00:26:24.75\00:26:26.08 Choosing to die to self because that's what Paul says, 00:26:26.11\00:26:29.12 I have been crucified with Christ, 00:26:29.15\00:26:31.82 he made a choice, a decision. 00:26:31.85\00:26:34.42 And like you said, we can't do it on our own. 00:26:34.46\00:26:38.83 God is so good. 00:26:38.86\00:26:40.73 It is through His Holy Spirit that awakens in us, 00:26:40.80\00:26:44.27 we see ourselves and we say, 00:26:44.30\00:26:46.97 wait a minute, 00:26:47.04\00:26:48.50 I am a wicked person, a sinful person. 00:26:48.54\00:26:51.44 And the condition that we find ourselves in, 00:26:51.47\00:26:54.28 has no other solution, but to say, 00:26:54.31\00:26:57.25 Lord, save me 00:26:57.28\00:26:58.65 like Peter when he was drowning in the water, 00:26:58.68\00:27:00.42 Lord, save me, 00:27:00.45\00:27:01.78 when we understand that Jesus is the only way. 00:27:01.82\00:27:05.15 And like the Bible says in Acts 4:12, it says, 00:27:05.19\00:27:09.59 "There's salvation in no other name," 00:27:09.62\00:27:13.29 including your name. 00:27:13.33\00:27:15.33 "There's salvation in no other name, 00:27:15.36\00:27:17.07 the only name under heaven 00:27:17.10\00:27:18.57 whereby we can be saved is Jesus Christ." 00:27:18.60\00:27:20.97 So we come to the place where we understand, 00:27:21.00\00:27:24.31 I cannot save myself, 00:27:24.34\00:27:26.34 then we understand we need the Savior, 00:27:26.37\00:27:28.91 that is Jesus Christ. 00:27:28.94\00:27:30.38 So surrender comes as we say, we cast our helpless self, 00:27:30.45\00:27:35.45 on the hands of the Lord, 00:27:35.48\00:27:36.82 in the hands of the Lord, take me. 00:27:36.89\00:27:39.09 And I cannot even give myself. 00:27:39.12\00:27:40.69 That's a day by day choice, isn't it? 00:27:40.76\00:27:42.09 Day by day choice. 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.46 Right, that's what Paul said, I die daily. 00:27:43.49\00:27:44.83 Daily, daily. 00:27:44.86\00:27:46.26 But before he dies daily, he has to be set free from sin. 00:27:46.29\00:27:51.13 You know, a slave, Romans 6:16, a slave. 00:27:51.17\00:27:54.14 I've learned as I'm studying this 00:27:54.17\00:27:56.34 and this is my favorite. 00:27:56.37\00:27:58.44 This... I love Romans 6. 00:27:58.47\00:27:59.81 This topic keeps me humble. 00:27:59.84\00:28:01.71 This topic reminds me 00:28:01.74\00:28:03.08 that no matter what I sing, I preach, 00:28:03.11\00:28:04.71 no matter Bible studies, 00:28:04.75\00:28:06.08 no matter the visibility or not. 00:28:06.11\00:28:07.65 This topic reminds me how much I need Christ. 00:28:07.68\00:28:10.59 Because, you know, when I when I first became, 00:28:10.62\00:28:13.86 I'm still becoming clear 00:28:13.89\00:28:15.22 because this is such a theme of eternity. 00:28:15.26\00:28:16.59 Yes, sir. But I came to this conclusion. 00:28:16.62\00:28:18.79 A slave cannot free himself. 00:28:18.83\00:28:21.03 That's right. 00:28:21.06\00:28:22.40 So we are either slaves to sin or slaves to righteousness. 00:28:22.43\00:28:26.00 So Paul says, when we were slaves to sin, 00:28:26.03\00:28:31.04 we were free in relationship to righteousness. 00:28:31.07\00:28:35.18 Now watch this. 00:28:35.21\00:28:36.54 When we were slaves to sin, 00:28:36.58\00:28:38.35 we didn't even think about righteousness 00:28:38.38\00:28:40.62 because that's where we were bound, 00:28:40.65\00:28:42.28 we were slaves to sin. 00:28:42.32\00:28:43.69 But when we were made free 00:28:43.72\00:28:45.59 and became slaves to righteousness, 00:28:45.62\00:28:48.49 this is where the dying daily comes in. 00:28:48.52\00:28:50.53 I wanna read a couple of passages here. 00:28:50.56\00:28:52.16 One of them. 00:28:52.19\00:28:53.53 So you're working of Romans 6:16, 00:28:53.60\00:28:55.03 you wanna read them? 00:28:55.06\00:28:56.40 Okay. Yeah, Romans 6:16. 00:28:56.43\00:28:57.77 Look at what it says here. 00:28:57.80\00:28:59.13 This is a very powerful passage because... 00:28:59.17\00:29:00.54 I love this passage. 00:29:00.57\00:29:01.90 You know, 00:29:01.94\00:29:03.27 "Do you not know 00:29:03.30\00:29:04.64 that to whom you present yourselves 00:29:04.67\00:29:06.31 slaves to obey, 00:29:06.34\00:29:07.68 you are that one's slave whom you obey, 00:29:07.71\00:29:10.15 whether of sin leading to death 00:29:10.18\00:29:12.51 or of obedience leading to righteousness? 00:29:12.55\00:29:15.55 Okay, so let me stop you right there, 00:29:15.58\00:29:17.09 what he is saying, you're gonna be a slave, 00:29:17.12\00:29:19.12 you have a choice of masters. 00:29:19.15\00:29:21.02 That's right. Right? 00:29:21.06\00:29:22.56 It all comes down to that morning, early decision, 00:29:22.59\00:29:25.46 the choice of masters. 00:29:25.49\00:29:26.90 And watch this. 00:29:26.93\00:29:28.26 And so before we go past this, this is the thing I was saying, 00:29:28.30\00:29:31.73 you cannot, can I read the quote? 00:29:31.77\00:29:35.04 We cannot, Temperance, page 112. 00:29:35.07\00:29:37.01 I like to say it, 00:29:37.04\00:29:38.37 but I'm gonna just give the context, 00:29:38.41\00:29:39.74 the book, Temperance, page 112, paragraph 3, 00:29:39.77\00:29:41.58 "We cannot change our hearts, 00:29:41.61\00:29:43.08 we cannot control our thoughts, our impulses, our affections. 00:29:43.11\00:29:46.28 We cannot make ourselves pure, fit for God's service. 00:29:46.31\00:29:49.45 But we can choose to serve God, 00:29:49.48\00:29:52.32 and we can give Him our will, then He will work in us to will 00:29:52.35\00:29:55.86 and to do according to His good pleasure. 00:29:55.89\00:29:57.96 Thus our whole nature will be brought 00:29:57.99\00:29:59.56 under the control of Christ." 00:29:59.59\00:30:00.93 A slave can only choose who he wants his master to be. 00:30:00.96\00:30:05.63 Joshua 24:15 is a powerful passage, 00:30:05.67\00:30:08.14 we often leave that one out in reference to this, 00:30:08.17\00:30:10.41 the righteous life. 00:30:10.44\00:30:12.01 Choose you this day whom you'll serve. 00:30:12.04\00:30:15.04 When you choose who to serve, they will choose what you do. 00:30:15.08\00:30:19.11 Amen. Did you get that? 00:30:19.15\00:30:20.62 Yes. Amen. 00:30:20.65\00:30:21.98 When you choose who does... 00:30:22.02\00:30:23.35 When you pick a master, they say, 00:30:23.39\00:30:24.72 this is what you're gonna do. 00:30:24.75\00:30:26.25 So if you choose today, if you choose sin today, 00:30:26.29\00:30:30.36 Satan is gonna control you and you have no options. 00:30:30.43\00:30:33.70 It is no longer you who do it. 00:30:33.73\00:30:35.30 But when you die to self, 00:30:35.33\00:30:37.37 it is no longer I who live but Christ who lives in me, 00:30:37.40\00:30:39.37 and get this, 00:30:39.40\00:30:40.74 in the life I now live in the flesh. 00:30:40.77\00:30:42.10 That's his present condition, 00:30:42.14\00:30:43.51 I live by faith in the Son of God 00:30:43.54\00:30:44.87 who loved me and gave Himself for me. 00:30:44.91\00:30:46.24 So what's happening now 00:30:46.27\00:30:47.61 is he's working out in me, His perfect will 00:30:47.64\00:30:51.35 because I simply said this in the morning, 00:30:51.38\00:30:52.85 and I love what you said a moment ago, 00:30:52.88\00:30:54.62 I can't even die to myself. 00:30:54.65\00:30:56.25 I could just simply say like, Peter, 00:30:56.28\00:30:58.49 what did he say, Lord, save me. 00:30:58.52\00:31:01.39 That's the shortest prayer 00:31:01.42\00:31:03.09 that we must pray every morning, 00:31:03.12\00:31:04.46 Lord, save me. 00:31:04.49\00:31:05.83 And when we submit to His will, 00:31:05.86\00:31:08.03 then we find freedom only in His righteousness. 00:31:08.06\00:31:11.37 Yeah. 00:31:11.40\00:31:12.73 So it's a whole lot connected to it. 00:31:12.77\00:31:14.14 You know, I like to say this because I guess to some people 00:31:14.17\00:31:18.01 it may sound terrifying, a slave to God. 00:31:18.04\00:31:23.68 But when you look at this, Christian says, 00:31:23.75\00:31:25.61 "Behold, what manner of love God has bestowed upon us 00:31:25.65\00:31:27.95 that we should be called children of God." 00:31:27.98\00:31:30.02 And the sense that it is speaking of here 00:31:30.09\00:31:31.92 is who is controlling your life. 00:31:31.95\00:31:35.29 But when you are under the control of the devil, 00:31:35.32\00:31:40.60 you lose your choice, you lose your will 00:31:40.63\00:31:42.86 because you give yourself to him, 00:31:42.90\00:31:44.27 and he wants to control you. 00:31:44.30\00:31:46.30 But when you give yourself to the Lord, 00:31:46.33\00:31:49.07 He always gives you liberty. 00:31:49.10\00:31:50.81 That's why it says, 00:31:50.84\00:31:52.17 "The truth shall make you free." 00:31:52.21\00:31:53.98 And it talks about the Ten Commandments 00:31:54.01\00:31:55.81 as the law of liberty. 00:31:55.84\00:31:58.71 It's the law of liberty, you choose the Lord, 00:31:58.75\00:32:01.88 and you are free. 00:32:01.92\00:32:03.69 You are free. 00:32:03.72\00:32:05.05 You can always say no, 00:32:05.09\00:32:06.42 I don't want to be with You anymore, 00:32:06.45\00:32:07.86 Lord, but the devil wants to control you 00:32:07.89\00:32:09.29 to the point of that you don't have a choice. 00:32:09.32\00:32:11.66 And that's why... Ask any addict. 00:32:11.69\00:32:14.46 That's why some people 00:32:14.50\00:32:15.93 they give themselves so much to sin 00:32:15.96\00:32:17.47 that they are demon possessed, 00:32:17.50\00:32:20.04 they lose the control. 00:32:20.07\00:32:21.60 But still, there's hope. 00:32:21.64\00:32:23.54 If that person is like that, like the... 00:32:23.61\00:32:26.31 Demoniac. Demoniac. 00:32:26.34\00:32:28.31 Jesus heard that cry within the heart that only, 00:32:28.34\00:32:31.98 you know, save me, he heard that cry. 00:32:32.01\00:32:34.88 And so God gives us freedom in being His children. 00:32:34.92\00:32:40.76 Amen. Amen. 00:32:40.79\00:32:42.86 I want to just put a pause here for just a second 00:32:42.89\00:32:46.56 'cause I want us to talk about imputed imparted 00:32:46.59\00:32:49.83 that you brought up. 00:32:49.86\00:32:51.90 And I'm gonna say this. 00:32:51.93\00:32:54.57 You know, you, what did they say 00:32:54.60\00:32:56.40 that confession is good for the soul 00:32:56.44\00:32:58.07 and hard on the reputation. 00:32:58.11\00:33:00.71 This past week or past few weeks, 00:33:00.78\00:33:04.91 I have been so busy. 00:33:04.95\00:33:07.12 I've been putting in 12 to 14 hours a day 00:33:07.15\00:33:09.55 on my computer working on big project 00:33:09.58\00:33:12.02 for here at 3ABN. 00:33:12.05\00:33:14.06 And I've worked remotely some. 00:33:14.09\00:33:17.06 Well, what happens when I work remotely, 00:33:17.13\00:33:19.03 I'm up at four or five, I'm on my computer, 00:33:19.06\00:33:22.06 I've been forgetting to eat breakfast, 00:33:22.10\00:33:24.17 forgot to have some devotionals, 00:33:24.20\00:33:26.07 you know, I mean, pray and say, oh, Lord, guide me. 00:33:26.10\00:33:28.84 But here's what happened. 00:33:28.87\00:33:30.64 And it just comes from a background of I grew up 00:33:30.71\00:33:36.58 in a New Testament Church, but it was very legalistic. 00:33:36.61\00:33:40.95 Legalism simply means you're trying to save yourself. 00:33:40.98\00:33:45.29 You can be, or think that there's salvation 00:33:45.32\00:33:48.56 in anything else other than Jesus Christ. 00:33:48.59\00:33:53.06 If you think keeping The Ten Commandments 00:33:53.09\00:33:57.07 is gonna save you, you're a legalist. 00:33:57.10\00:34:00.44 That's the bottom line. 00:34:00.47\00:34:02.60 But what happens was, I began to feel guilty. 00:34:02.64\00:34:09.01 And I felt like, what's wrong with me, 00:34:09.04\00:34:11.21 Lord, you know, why am I spending so much time 00:34:11.25\00:34:14.32 and every time I get separation anxiety 00:34:14.35\00:34:18.29 when I become the least bit separated from the Lord, 00:34:18.32\00:34:21.12 but all of a sudden, I'm beating myself up. 00:34:21.16\00:34:24.13 And it occurred to me, 00:34:24.16\00:34:26.49 this is what everybody does. 00:34:26.53\00:34:31.87 In some sense, it's like, 00:34:31.90\00:34:34.84 I've got to do something to please God, 00:34:34.87\00:34:37.71 when all God and as soon as I, you know, 00:34:37.74\00:34:40.68 it was like Friday, it was like, 00:34:40.71\00:34:42.31 "Yes, Lord, all I've got to do is come before you and say, 00:34:42.34\00:34:45.58 'Take my heart, I can't give it.'" 00:34:45.61\00:34:47.52 As soon as I release that burden of work mentality, 00:34:47.55\00:34:53.66 behaviorist, you know, some of us are behaviorist. 00:34:53.69\00:34:58.03 As soon as I let go of that, and say, Lord, just, you know, 00:34:58.06\00:35:03.67 lead me by Your good Spirit, work out Your way in me today. 00:35:03.70\00:35:07.64 Guess what happens? 00:35:07.67\00:35:09.47 All of that guilt rolls off 00:35:09.50\00:35:11.27 and I just fall right back into perfect line, 00:35:11.31\00:35:14.68 that communion opens up, 00:35:14.71\00:35:17.05 you know, between me and the Lord, 00:35:17.08\00:35:19.05 my prayer life just... 00:35:19.08\00:35:21.38 Flourishes. 00:35:21.42\00:35:22.75 Flourishes and it's that simple. 00:35:22.78\00:35:25.42 We make, I think sometimes we make the Christian life 00:35:25.45\00:35:28.02 sound so difficult that you got to do this, this, 00:35:28.06\00:35:31.36 and this when God is just saying 00:35:31.39\00:35:32.73 is, give me permission. 00:35:32.76\00:35:34.10 Just submit to me. Yeah. 00:35:34.13\00:35:35.76 So imputed righteousness. 00:35:35.80\00:35:38.47 There's, like we've already said, 00:35:38.50\00:35:41.37 there is nothing you could do. 00:35:41.40\00:35:43.84 There's nothing Shelley Quinn can do to save herself. 00:35:43.91\00:35:47.64 There's nothing you can do to save yourself. 00:35:47.68\00:35:50.58 All of our righteousness, Isaiah 64:6, 00:35:50.65\00:35:53.72 is like filthy rags before the Lord. 00:35:53.75\00:35:56.89 But when we come and surrender, 00:35:56.92\00:36:00.26 God's plan has been 00:36:00.29\00:36:04.06 from the very beginning, 00:36:04.13\00:36:07.30 righteousness by faith, 00:36:07.33\00:36:08.86 even in the Garden of Eden. 00:36:08.90\00:36:11.57 I mean, when God had to slay 00:36:11.60\00:36:13.47 and add an animal as a substitute, 00:36:13.54\00:36:16.34 if we're not gonna take time 00:36:16.37\00:36:17.71 'cause we're running out of time already, 00:36:17.74\00:36:19.61 but it has always been righteousness by faith, 00:36:19.64\00:36:23.48 always been righteousness by faith, 00:36:23.55\00:36:26.41 and Jeremiah said, Christ, our righteousness. 00:36:26.45\00:36:29.82 So everything about the sanctuary, 00:36:29.85\00:36:34.96 pointed to Jesus. 00:36:34.99\00:36:36.32 It was telling them the story 00:36:36.36\00:36:38.63 that all these sacrifices they knew 00:36:38.66\00:36:41.03 would be fulfilled in Christ. 00:36:41.06\00:36:43.23 All right, that's imputed righteousness justification, 00:36:43.26\00:36:46.43 which means that you have been 00:36:46.47\00:36:50.11 declared pardoned. 00:36:50.14\00:36:53.38 You may be guilty, 00:36:53.41\00:36:54.88 but it's the judge saying you're pardoned. 00:36:54.91\00:36:58.15 So that's justification. 00:36:58.18\00:37:00.52 But now there's this sanctification, 00:37:00.55\00:37:04.09 how does the righteousness of Christ 00:37:04.12\00:37:06.69 bring about sanctification? 00:37:06.76\00:37:08.09 Okay, so let me add to segue into this, 00:37:08.12\00:37:10.63 let me just give a simplified picture of slavery. 00:37:10.66\00:37:13.13 It's the most amazing picture that many of us often ignore. 00:37:13.16\00:37:16.30 You know, modern day slavery could be simply defined 00:37:16.33\00:37:18.83 as getting on an airplane, once that door closes. 00:37:18.87\00:37:22.34 You have no choice as to where you're going. 00:37:22.37\00:37:24.54 Once that plane takes off, 00:37:24.57\00:37:26.11 you are in the mercy of the pilot. 00:37:26.14\00:37:28.28 Yeah. 00:37:28.31\00:37:29.64 So Christianity is submitting, getting on board with Jesus. 00:37:29.68\00:37:33.08 And enjoying first class righteousness. 00:37:33.11\00:37:35.58 Amen. 00:37:35.62\00:37:36.99 Enjoying the amenities 00:37:37.02\00:37:38.35 of all the blessings that come along 00:37:38.39\00:37:40.69 with getting on board with Jesus, 00:37:40.76\00:37:42.09 that's beautiful slavery, 00:37:42.12\00:37:43.83 as compared to getting on a plane, 00:37:43.86\00:37:45.66 like somebody I testified once the door's closed 00:37:45.69\00:37:48.76 and while they're in mid-flight. 00:37:48.80\00:37:51.10 I wanna get off. 00:37:51.13\00:37:52.47 They realize, somebody said, "So do you live in Phoenix?" 00:37:52.50\00:37:56.14 What do you mean, do I live in Phoenix? 00:37:56.17\00:37:57.51 I'm going to Chicago. 00:37:57.54\00:37:58.87 This plane is going to Phoenix. 00:37:58.91\00:38:01.74 Oh, no! 00:38:01.78\00:38:03.18 How did that happen? 00:38:03.21\00:38:04.55 And now flight attendance because of that one example. 00:38:04.58\00:38:07.32 It was a funny story, 00:38:07.35\00:38:09.02 it happened a number of years ago. 00:38:09.05\00:38:10.69 Now flight attendants often say, 00:38:10.72\00:38:13.02 if your final destination is not Phoenix, 00:38:13.05\00:38:15.99 this is a good time to get off the plane. 00:38:16.02\00:38:17.66 Yeah. 00:38:17.69\00:38:19.03 And so if your final destination 00:38:19.06\00:38:20.40 is not heaven, 00:38:20.43\00:38:21.76 this is a good time to push aside 00:38:21.80\00:38:23.13 the righteousness of Christ. 00:38:23.16\00:38:24.70 But if your destination is heaven, 00:38:24.73\00:38:26.50 you simply submit so watch this. 00:38:26.53\00:38:28.17 Here's where the submission comes in. 00:38:28.20\00:38:30.01 There's a transaction that takes place 00:38:30.04\00:38:32.04 that brings about the sanctification, 00:38:32.07\00:38:33.88 the imputed part, 00:38:33.91\00:38:35.24 we're gonna go from imputed to imparted 00:38:35.28\00:38:36.61 right away in one text. 00:38:36.64\00:38:37.98 Okay, explain what sanctification... 00:38:38.01\00:38:39.35 We know what justification is being pardoned 00:38:39.38\00:38:41.82 or declared... 00:38:41.85\00:38:43.18 So here it is. Here it is. Okay, sanctification. 00:38:43.22\00:38:44.55 The sanctification is right here. 00:38:44.59\00:38:45.92 Now Romans 6:18-20. 00:38:45.95\00:38:47.39 Let's look at that. 00:38:47.46\00:38:49.09 Okay, because now sanctification, 00:38:49.12\00:38:51.46 the imputing takes part in verse 18. 00:38:51.49\00:38:53.93 And the imparting takes part as we go further down. 00:38:54.00\00:38:59.80 It says having, verse 18. 00:38:59.83\00:39:04.01 Matter of fact, let me just go and read in my Bible, 00:39:04.04\00:39:06.24 Romans 6:18, 00:39:06.27\00:39:08.24 "And having been set free from sin." 00:39:08.28\00:39:11.51 That's free from sin. 00:39:11.55\00:39:13.42 That is imputed. 00:39:13.45\00:39:16.79 "You became slaves of righteousness," 00:39:16.82\00:39:20.76 that is imparted. 00:39:20.79\00:39:22.82 Let's go on and see how it happens. 00:39:22.86\00:39:25.13 "I speak in human terms 00:39:25.16\00:39:26.59 because of the weakness of your flesh. 00:39:26.63\00:39:29.40 For just as you presented your members 00:39:29.43\00:39:31.90 as slaves of uncleanness, 00:39:31.93\00:39:35.10 and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, 00:39:35.14\00:39:38.24 now present your members 00:39:38.27\00:39:41.21 as slaves of righteousness for holiness." 00:39:41.24\00:39:44.31 And then verse 20 is the capstone. 00:39:44.35\00:39:46.48 "For when you were slaves of sin, 00:39:46.51\00:39:48.72 you were free in regard to righteousness." 00:39:48.75\00:39:52.69 And so you have here, verse 22, 00:39:52.72\00:39:54.49 I'm gonna jump past 21 for time sake. 00:39:54.52\00:39:57.63 "Now having been set free from sin, 00:39:57.66\00:40:00.93 and having become slaves of God, 00:40:00.96\00:40:03.20 you have your fruit to holiness, 00:40:03.23\00:40:05.70 and the end, everlasting life." 00:40:05.73\00:40:07.74 There could be no fruit to holiness, 00:40:07.77\00:40:09.80 there's no sanctifying fruit to holiness. 00:40:09.84\00:40:11.67 We can't get that far not read the next verse. 00:40:11.71\00:40:13.78 Oh, we know verse, yeah, go ahead read it, Shelley. 00:40:13.81\00:40:15.14 I know that I just have to read it for those at home 00:40:15.18\00:40:17.28 that may not know Romans 6:23. 00:40:17.35\00:40:21.55 It says, "The wages of sin is death." 00:40:21.58\00:40:25.12 So see, you have to work your way to hell. 00:40:25.15\00:40:28.06 That's right. 00:40:28.09\00:40:29.42 "The wages of sin is death," your work and your way to hell, 00:40:29.46\00:40:33.13 but the gift of God is eternal life 00:40:33.16\00:40:38.10 in Christ Jesus our Lord." 00:40:38.13\00:40:40.74 We believe our way to heaven. 00:40:40.77\00:40:42.60 Okay. So finishing the thought. 00:40:42.64\00:40:44.44 So Paul now says, and until you're free from sin, 00:40:44.47\00:40:48.18 you can't even decide to submit to righteousness. 00:40:48.21\00:40:51.91 Until you're free from sin, you can't even decide 00:40:51.95\00:40:54.25 that now I'm going to submit to righteousness 00:40:54.32\00:40:56.02 because you have no enabling. 00:40:56.05\00:40:57.72 There's no power, you have no power at all. 00:40:57.75\00:41:00.16 So here's where the power comes from. 00:41:00.19\00:41:01.79 2 Corinthians 5:21. Look at this. 00:41:01.82\00:41:03.93 And I asked the question earlier, 00:41:03.96\00:41:05.29 how can we become what we are not? 00:41:05.33\00:41:07.63 2 Corinthians 5:21, 00:41:07.66\00:41:09.96 "For He made Him who knew no sin 00:41:10.00\00:41:12.33 to be sin for us," 00:41:12.37\00:41:14.14 transaction, 00:41:14.17\00:41:16.20 "that we might become 00:41:16.24\00:41:18.07 the righteousness of God in Him." 00:41:18.11\00:41:21.11 Hallelujah. Amen. 00:41:21.14\00:41:22.48 Righteousness by that we might become, 00:41:22.51\00:41:24.41 he became what he didn't have to, 00:41:24.45\00:41:27.32 so we could become what we couldn't. 00:41:27.35\00:41:31.35 And he did it because of love. 00:41:31.39\00:41:32.72 John 3:16 is all in this passage. 00:41:32.75\00:41:34.66 He became what he didn't have to, 00:41:34.69\00:41:37.93 so that we could become what we could never. 00:41:37.96\00:41:40.83 Amen. That's right. 00:41:40.90\00:41:42.23 So that's why I say there's no righteousness of our own. 00:41:42.26\00:41:44.93 Was Jesus sinful? 00:41:44.97\00:41:46.30 No, what they do? 00:41:46.33\00:41:48.40 Shelley, Pastor Dinzey, 00:41:48.44\00:41:50.94 who do you know would want to be sin for us? 00:41:50.97\00:41:55.48 And that word for us mean in place of us. 00:41:55.51\00:41:58.31 It's not, okay, I'll just be sin 00:41:58.35\00:42:00.32 and I'll hang around with, 00:42:00.35\00:42:01.68 you know, he took our place. 00:42:01.72\00:42:03.42 So that one day, we could be Him. 00:42:03.49\00:42:05.79 And that's why 1 John 3:2, is my most beautiful passage. 00:42:05.82\00:42:09.19 I'll share that later on in the program. 00:42:09.22\00:42:11.33 Because, you know, this is a whole, 00:42:11.36\00:42:13.90 shall I do it now... 00:42:13.93\00:42:15.26 Go ahead. Or Later on. 00:42:15.30\00:42:16.63 The whole beauty of salvation is this. 00:42:16.67\00:42:19.37 And I wanna encourage you today 00:42:19.40\00:42:20.74 because some people might say, well, it's so hard. 00:42:20.77\00:42:22.70 Nothing discourages me more 00:42:22.74\00:42:24.31 than people that have been Christians all their lives 00:42:24.34\00:42:26.04 that are uncertain of their salvation. 00:42:26.07\00:42:28.81 But it's a gracious certainty. Yes. 00:42:28.84\00:42:31.41 Here's the gracious certainty. 00:42:31.45\00:42:32.78 1 John Chapter 3, praise the Lord, verse 1 and 2. 00:42:32.81\00:42:37.19 "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, 00:42:37.22\00:42:41.69 that we should be called the children of God! 00:42:41.72\00:42:44.96 Therefore the world does not know him, 00:42:44.99\00:42:46.80 because he did not know us." 00:42:46.83\00:42:48.16 And here's the here's the passage. 00:42:48.20\00:42:49.63 "Beloved, now we are children of God," when? 00:42:49.66\00:42:52.70 Now. Now. 00:42:52.73\00:42:54.07 Hallelujah. 00:42:54.14\00:42:55.60 "And it has not yet been revealed, 00:42:55.64\00:42:57.74 what we shall be. 00:42:57.77\00:42:59.54 But we know that when he is revealed, 00:42:59.57\00:43:01.94 we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." 00:43:01.98\00:43:05.85 Thus I introduce a third term. 00:43:05.88\00:43:07.42 Remember I said, arrogant certainty, 00:43:07.45\00:43:10.09 and gracious certainty. 00:43:10.12\00:43:12.32 Now, 00:43:12.35\00:43:14.72 this is gracious uncertainty. 00:43:14.76\00:43:18.23 Which means this is gracious uncertainty, 00:43:18.26\00:43:21.83 which means I don't have to worry 00:43:21.86\00:43:23.47 about what happens tomorrow, the next day, 00:43:23.50\00:43:25.03 the next day, the next day, the next day, the next day 00:43:25.07\00:43:27.44 because I know He's working on me. 00:43:27.47\00:43:28.94 Amen. Amen. 00:43:28.97\00:43:30.44 Gracious uncertainty, people say, 00:43:30.51\00:43:31.91 but am I gonna sin tomorrow? 00:43:31.94\00:43:35.01 Relax, he who has begun a good work in you 00:43:35.04\00:43:37.81 will complete it. 00:43:37.85\00:43:39.18 All we got to do is daily submit ourselves to Christ 00:43:39.21\00:43:41.48 that just becomes so beautiful. 00:43:41.52\00:43:43.49 So don't walk around with this 10 list. 00:43:43.52\00:43:46.42 It will be fulfilled in you, if Christ is in you 00:43:46.45\00:43:48.69 because He cannot deny His own righteousness. 00:43:48.72\00:43:50.83 That's right. 00:43:50.86\00:43:52.19 He cannot deny, if Christ is in you, 00:43:52.23\00:43:54.23 He will fulfill the requirements of His law. 00:43:54.30\00:43:56.77 He said that, that we might become 00:43:56.80\00:43:58.90 the righteousness of God in Him. 00:43:58.93\00:44:00.54 You know, Shelley, 00:44:00.57\00:44:01.90 I'm in your Bible student you both are. 00:44:01.94\00:44:03.41 But we love Romans. Yes. Amen. 00:44:03.44\00:44:05.54 And Jesus fulfills the righteous requirements 00:44:05.57\00:44:08.98 of the law in us through His strength. 00:44:09.01\00:44:11.88 Amen. Not through our own. 00:44:11.91\00:44:13.25 Amen. Let me jump in and say. 00:44:13.28\00:44:14.95 I know it's suicidal, we need another hour. 00:44:14.98\00:44:16.32 We need to be, we need more than, 00:44:16.35\00:44:17.69 I can't believe our times. 00:44:17.72\00:44:19.05 We need several hours for this topic 00:44:19.09\00:44:20.86 'cause we could all 00:44:20.89\00:44:22.22 but here's the beauty, 00:44:22.26\00:44:24.49 okay, justification. 00:44:24.53\00:44:26.39 It's the judge standing up and saying you're pardoned. 00:44:26.43\00:44:29.40 I mean, you were guilty. 00:44:29.43\00:44:31.07 But he said, "You're pardoned." 00:44:31.10\00:44:32.47 I mean, he's giving you a pardon. 00:44:32.50\00:44:34.40 That's all your past sins. 00:44:34.44\00:44:36.24 Sanctification simply means to be made holy. 00:44:36.27\00:44:42.61 Holiness and sanctification mean the same thing. 00:44:42.64\00:44:46.75 But they both mean to be separated from sin. 00:44:46.82\00:44:49.55 That's right. 00:44:49.58\00:44:50.92 So when, in Ephesians, let's read this real quick, 00:44:50.99\00:44:53.56 Ephesians 3:16 00:44:53.59\00:44:56.16 'cause we're talking about the imputed word 00:44:56.19\00:44:59.49 that we used over here for justification 00:44:59.53\00:45:02.03 means Christ's record was credited to us 00:45:02.06\00:45:07.27 His perfect obedience, everything. 00:45:07.34\00:45:09.37 But now, how do we get righteousness 00:45:09.40\00:45:13.58 that's gonna take us 00:45:13.61\00:45:15.08 and separate us from sin, day by day? 00:45:15.11\00:45:19.18 It's imparted and here's how. That's right. 00:45:19.21\00:45:22.18 Verse 16, Paul's writing to the Ephesians 3:16, 00:45:22.22\00:45:28.79 "O that He would grant you, he being Jesus Christ, 00:45:28.82\00:45:32.86 according to the riches of His glory, 00:45:32.89\00:45:36.26 to be strengthened with my where through or how, 00:45:36.30\00:45:41.97 through His Spirit in the inner man." 00:45:42.00\00:45:45.67 That's right. 00:45:45.71\00:45:47.08 So it's the dunamis power of God, 00:45:47.11\00:45:50.08 that dynamite power 00:45:50.15\00:45:51.78 is when the Holy Spirit comes into you. 00:45:51.81\00:45:55.78 That's how he does it. Why? 00:45:55.82\00:45:57.95 He says, "That Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith." 00:45:57.99\00:46:02.32 Yes. That's right. 00:46:02.36\00:46:03.73 "That you, being rooted and grounded in love, 00:46:03.76\00:46:05.23 may be able to comprehend with all the saints 00:46:05.26\00:46:07.20 what is the width and height and length and depth, 00:46:07.23\00:46:09.50 to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge 00:46:09.53\00:46:13.97 that you may be filled with all the fullness of God." 00:46:14.04\00:46:17.31 And don't run past verse 20. 00:46:17.34\00:46:19.57 Like, you cannot go that far and not do verse 20. 00:46:19.61\00:46:23.24 This is what Shelley's talking about. 00:46:23.28\00:46:24.68 This is what we're talking about. 00:46:24.71\00:46:26.18 When you are in Christ, look at this beautiful passage, 00:46:26.21\00:46:29.02 "Now to Him..." 00:46:29.05\00:46:30.49 That is able. 00:46:30.52\00:46:31.85 "Who is able to do exceedingly, 00:46:31.89\00:46:34.76 abundantly above all that we ask or think," how? 00:46:34.79\00:46:40.96 "According to the power that works in us." 00:46:41.00\00:46:44.27 Amen. 00:46:44.30\00:46:45.63 Dunamis. Amen. 00:46:45.67\00:46:47.04 It ain't, it ain't for us. 00:46:47.07\00:46:49.10 We don't get it. It comes in. 00:46:49.14\00:46:50.81 It's Philippians 2:13, 00:46:50.84\00:46:52.34 God through the Holy Spirit is working in us 00:46:52.37\00:46:54.74 to will and to do His good purpose. 00:46:54.78\00:46:56.95 Go ahead, I'm gonna cut you loose 00:46:56.98\00:46:58.31 for a couple minutes and I need... 00:46:58.35\00:46:59.68 Guys are taking all the good stuff. 00:46:59.71\00:47:01.78 You know, in Romans Chapter 7, 00:47:01.82\00:47:04.45 it says, "For to be carnally minded is death." 00:47:04.49\00:47:07.36 Yeah. 00:47:07.39\00:47:08.72 And it says that the carnal mind 00:47:08.76\00:47:10.09 is that enemy is an enemy. 00:47:10.13\00:47:11.89 It says enmity against God 00:47:11.93\00:47:13.63 is like being an enemy against God 00:47:13.70\00:47:15.06 is now subject to the law of God, 00:47:15.10\00:47:16.43 neither indeed can be. 00:47:16.46\00:47:18.57 God wants to take us from loving sin, 00:47:18.60\00:47:22.34 to loving the Lord so much 00:47:22.37\00:47:23.71 that we will love to do His will. 00:47:23.74\00:47:26.78 That's why you read of Jesus says, 00:47:26.81\00:47:28.28 I delight to do thy will of God, 00:47:28.31\00:47:30.25 thy law is within my heart. 00:47:30.28\00:47:32.68 And those that understand 00:47:32.71\00:47:34.78 their salvation is only through Jesus Christ, 00:47:34.82\00:47:39.22 and submit to Him completely, 00:47:39.25\00:47:41.59 they will delight to do His will. 00:47:41.62\00:47:45.16 They will delight, you know, you read of David, he says, 00:47:45.19\00:47:48.73 "I love thy law," it is my meditation all day, 00:47:48.76\00:47:52.17 why? Because it is God. 00:47:52.20\00:47:56.47 The law of God is a transcript of His character. 00:47:56.50\00:48:00.18 And so when we submit to the Lord, 00:48:00.21\00:48:04.61 serving Him obey in the law, 00:48:04.65\00:48:06.28 it will be a delight, it will be a joy. 00:48:06.31\00:48:08.22 Amen. Amen. 00:48:08.25\00:48:09.62 And we will have that wonderful peace. 00:48:09.65\00:48:12.62 You know, the Bible says, 00:48:12.65\00:48:13.99 there is no peace for the wicked, 00:48:14.06\00:48:16.73 we're gonna pass from being slaves 00:48:16.76\00:48:18.89 and having no peace to having joy, and peace, 00:48:18.93\00:48:23.97 that passes all understanding. 00:48:24.00\00:48:25.90 And we will delight to do the Lord's will. 00:48:25.93\00:48:28.57 Okay. 00:48:28.60\00:48:29.94 So let me say this then, 'cause we are running down. 00:48:30.01\00:48:31.74 That's what we're talking about. 00:48:31.77\00:48:33.24 That's word it is, it's the joy, 00:48:33.27\00:48:34.91 the sanctification, we're running out of time. 00:48:34.94\00:48:37.08 So let me put it, we've got to get to this point. 00:48:37.15\00:48:41.18 We are saying, 00:48:41.22\00:48:43.28 we cannot become righteous through our behavior. 00:48:43.32\00:48:46.32 Now wait a minute, we just read 00:48:46.35\00:48:48.09 that if you're a slave to right... 00:48:48.12\00:48:51.26 Through obedience leads to righteousness 00:48:51.29\00:48:54.36 in Romans 6:16. 00:48:54.40\00:48:56.00 But we know you cannot become righteous 00:48:56.03\00:48:59.77 through your behavior. 00:48:59.80\00:49:01.14 Look at that Pharisees. 00:49:01.17\00:49:03.14 They kept they were sticklers, 00:49:03.17\00:49:05.14 and they never became righteous, our job. 00:49:05.17\00:49:08.38 And please hear what I'm saying. 00:49:08.41\00:49:10.65 Our job is to seek a relationship with Jesus. 00:49:10.68\00:49:16.89 That's all you've got to do every day, 00:49:16.92\00:49:19.05 and everything else will fall into place. 00:49:19.09\00:49:21.49 So how does behavior fit into righteousness? 00:49:21.52\00:49:24.63 Easy, we become new creations in Christ Jesus. 00:49:24.66\00:49:27.70 That's right. Jesus... 00:49:27.73\00:49:29.06 The old is gone, the new is come, 00:49:29.10\00:49:30.47 He does what you're saying, 00:49:30.50\00:49:31.83 He puts that delight, 00:49:31.87\00:49:33.44 it will begin to desire what He wants to do. 00:49:33.47\00:49:36.91 And we know that He works in us 00:49:36.94\00:49:38.37 to will and to do His good pleasure. 00:49:38.41\00:49:40.58 So what Romans 6:16 is saying, you know, 00:49:40.61\00:49:44.88 you're either a slave to sin, 00:49:44.91\00:49:47.75 which leads to death or slave to be righteous, 00:49:47.78\00:49:52.89 which leads to righteousness. 00:49:52.92\00:49:54.92 What that is saying, 00:49:54.96\00:49:56.29 is that our behavior acts of obedience, 00:49:56.32\00:50:00.20 makeup, habits of obedience. 00:50:00.23\00:50:03.47 That's what changes our character, 00:50:03.50\00:50:05.90 is it not? 00:50:05.93\00:50:07.27 And I know 1 John 3:7 says, 00:50:07.34\00:50:12.77 "Do not be deceived. 00:50:12.81\00:50:15.51 Only He who does what is righteous is righteous." 00:50:15.54\00:50:20.32 So when the righteousness of Christ is working in you, 00:50:20.35\00:50:24.09 when God is working in you through His Holy Spirit. 00:50:24.12\00:50:26.99 Jesus said in Matthew 5:16, I think it is that He said, 00:50:27.06\00:50:33.16 "Let your light so shine 00:50:33.19\00:50:35.76 that men will see your good works, 00:50:35.80\00:50:38.47 and glorify your Father." 00:50:38.50\00:50:41.07 What we do, 00:50:41.10\00:50:43.07 we seek a relationship with God, 00:50:43.10\00:50:45.41 we trust in Him. 00:50:45.44\00:50:47.38 And as we come before Him, 00:50:47.41\00:50:48.94 then God works in us 00:50:48.98\00:50:50.35 to will and to do His good pleasure, 00:50:50.38\00:50:52.61 fruits of righteousness, that's the fruit of the Spirit. 00:50:52.65\00:50:57.29 We don't get any credit for it, 00:50:57.32\00:50:58.65 but it's to glorify God. 00:50:58.69\00:51:00.02 One last quick text, Romans 8:10, summarizing, 00:51:00.06\00:51:02.99 "And if Christ is in you, 00:51:03.02\00:51:04.49 the body is dead because of sin, 00:51:04.53\00:51:06.09 but the Spirit is life because of righteousness." 00:51:06.13\00:51:08.63 Amen. Johnny. 00:51:08.66\00:51:10.00 You have Christ on the inside. Amen. 00:51:10.07\00:51:11.73 So how do we go from here to here 00:51:11.77\00:51:14.37 where the Lord wants us to be? 00:51:14.40\00:51:16.40 By daily submitting to Him. 00:51:16.44\00:51:19.57 And we have 2 Corinthians 3:18, 00:51:19.61\00:51:22.04 "By beholding we become change." 00:51:22.08\00:51:24.18 We must spend time with the Lord daily, 00:51:24.25\00:51:27.12 look at the life of Christ. 00:51:27.15\00:51:29.15 I recommend one of my favorite books, 00:51:29.18\00:51:30.69 Desire of Ages. Yes. 00:51:30.72\00:51:32.05 And, you know what? 00:51:32.09\00:51:33.42 That's what was getting me 00:51:33.46\00:51:34.79 is that I wasn't spending time with God daily. 00:51:34.82\00:51:36.73 But I wanna tell you something, 00:51:36.76\00:51:38.43 if you just come before the Lord, and remember, 00:51:38.46\00:51:42.93 your only part is to seek a relationship with Him, 00:51:42.96\00:51:46.47 to submit to Him, 00:51:46.50\00:51:47.87 and you come before the Lord and just say, 00:51:47.90\00:51:50.51 Here I am Lord, work in me today, guess what? 00:51:50.54\00:51:53.38 You're gonna want to spend time, 00:51:53.41\00:51:55.18 you're gonna enjoy your time in the Bible, 00:51:55.21\00:51:56.95 you're gonna find yourself praying, 00:51:56.98\00:51:58.95 like you can't believe. 00:51:58.98\00:52:01.05 It's all about relationships 00:52:01.08\00:52:04.29 because we can't save ourselves. 00:52:04.32\00:52:06.29 It's like that song says, "Have your own way Lord," 00:52:06.32\00:52:08.49 you love that, have your own way Lord in me. 00:52:08.52\00:52:09.86 That's it. 00:52:09.89\00:52:11.23 Oh, guys, I know, 00:52:11.26\00:52:12.59 we could spend hours on this topic. 00:52:12.63\00:52:14.93 And it'd be fun. 00:52:14.96\00:52:16.30 We don't plan anything.
