Amen. 00:07:34.02\00:07:35.48 Well, if you're joining us just a moment late, 00:07:35.52\00:07:37.49 our special guests are Tim and Annette Rasmussen 00:07:37.52\00:07:41.59 and they are with Water for Life. 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.66 But before we talk about and explain 00:07:43.69\00:07:47.30 what Water for Life is, 00:07:47.33\00:07:49.00 let's kind of get to know the two of you a little bit. 00:07:49.03\00:07:52.37 I'm gonna begin with you, Tim, you are a district attorney, 00:07:52.40\00:07:55.90 where? 00:07:55.94\00:07:57.27 I'm the elected district attorney 00:07:57.31\00:07:58.64 for St evens County, Washington. 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.01 And you? 00:08:00.04\00:08:01.38 It's a county from Spokane that goes up to the Canadian border, 00:08:01.41\00:08:03.11 about 45,000 people, 00:08:03.14\00:08:05.01 one of the 39 counties in Washington. 00:08:05.05\00:08:07.22 Oh, it's always nice 00:08:07.25\00:08:08.95 to have a personal friend who's a DA. 00:08:08.98\00:08:10.85 Well, if you ever get a ticket, I can fix you out, 00:08:10.89\00:08:12.79 just a little, can't do much but I can fix a ticket. 00:08:12.82\00:08:15.46 I should look at it. Yes. 00:08:15.49\00:08:16.96 You know, tell us a little bit about your physical condition 00:08:16.99\00:08:20.23 because I know, 00:08:20.26\00:08:21.60 I think the last time you were here, 00:08:21.63\00:08:22.96 you were in a wheelchair. 00:08:23.00\00:08:25.60 You suffered polio as a child? 00:08:25.63\00:08:28.74 When I was three, I was living in Michigan, 00:08:28.77\00:08:31.07 and I had polio, 00:08:31.11\00:08:33.14 and that was in 1951. 00:08:33.17\00:08:35.34 And like many people, it was a terrible disease 00:08:35.38\00:08:38.75 and they didn't know how to treat it very much. 00:08:38.78\00:08:40.98 And I was left with a residual weakness 00:08:41.02\00:08:43.12 on the right side of my body, 00:08:43.15\00:08:44.49 particularly it affected my right leg. 00:08:44.52\00:08:46.89 And through the years I became more and more handicapped 00:08:46.92\00:08:50.56 until probably 35 years ago, I started using a cane, 00:08:50.59\00:08:54.53 and then two canes, and then crutches, 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.53 and then about four years in a wheelchair, 00:08:56.56\00:08:59.00 but about three years ago I went to, 00:08:59.03\00:09:01.54 I found a doctor in Seattle 00:09:01.57\00:09:03.41 and went over to a foot and ankle institute. 00:09:03.44\00:09:06.57 And this older fellow, he knew what to do. 00:09:06.61\00:09:09.81 He reshaped some of the bones in my foot, 00:09:09.84\00:09:11.95 put a bunch of metal in there and move some tendons around 00:09:11.98\00:09:15.52 and I'm walking better than I have for 30 years. 00:09:15.55\00:09:17.59 I know, I was just so amazed to see you today. 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.02 I can stand, I can walk, 00:09:20.06\00:09:21.39 I can move around, I don't have to... 00:09:21.42\00:09:23.63 For years I was in a wheelchair and people at work 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.56 when I'm walking, they say, I didn't know you were tall. 00:09:26.59\00:09:28.80 Yeah. 00:09:28.83\00:09:30.40 That's 'cause I've been in that wheelchair for years. 00:09:30.43\00:09:33.10 But, yes, technology and the Lord 00:09:33.13\00:09:36.60 has provided some very skilled physicians 00:09:36.64\00:09:38.81 and people to do work and they sure helped me. 00:09:38.84\00:09:42.94 That's interesting 00:09:42.98\00:09:44.31 because we had a house built on one level 00:09:44.35\00:09:46.92 because we were sure that he was gonna have to live 00:09:46.95\00:09:50.42 in a scooter. 00:09:50.45\00:09:51.79 Yeah. 00:09:51.82\00:09:53.15 And so we got this, everything spaced apart, 00:09:53.19\00:09:55.32 the kitchen, everything 00:09:55.36\00:09:56.69 so he can race around the house in his scooter, right? 00:09:56.73\00:10:00.36 He doesn't need a scooter. 00:10:00.40\00:10:01.73 Now we got a long walk around in the house. 00:10:01.76\00:10:03.30 Oh, well, that's good. Yeah. 00:10:03.33\00:10:04.67 That's good. Yeah. 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.03 So we're praising the Lord. Amen and amen. 00:10:06.07\00:10:07.80 So, Annette, I know, 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.17 it kind of give us a little of your history. 00:10:09.20\00:10:10.91 Did you grow up as a Seventh-day Ad, 00:10:10.94\00:10:13.01 in a Seventh-day Adventist Christian home or...? 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.74 Yes. Okay. 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.75 The history goes pretty far back 00:10:17.78\00:10:19.51 'cause my grandfather came from Sicily 00:10:19.55\00:10:21.88 when he was about 16 years old, 00:10:21.92\00:10:24.29 and very strong Catholic family. 00:10:24.32\00:10:27.56 And when he came to the United States, 00:10:27.59\00:10:29.62 he studied all the religions, 00:10:29.66\00:10:31.53 and he decided that the Seventh-day Adventist faith 00:10:31.56\00:10:33.73 had the most truth. 00:10:33.76\00:10:35.10 Amen. 00:10:35.13\00:10:36.46 And so he went to seminary. Praise God. 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.37 And the Northern California Conference hired him 00:10:38.40\00:10:40.84 to start the Italian churches. 00:10:40.87\00:10:43.20 How exciting! 00:10:43.24\00:10:44.57 Because there were so many immigrants 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.54 from Sicily and Italy 00:10:46.57\00:10:48.24 that didn't know English, 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.74 and they wanted to hear sermons in Italian, 00:10:49.78\00:10:54.28 and so there was about 50 churches total, 00:10:54.32\00:10:58.39 but he was one of the first ones 00:10:58.42\00:11:01.02 that helped to start that work. 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.82 Praise the Lord. 00:11:02.86\00:11:04.19 And then after that two or three generations went by, 00:11:04.23\00:11:06.96 they didn't need this, 00:11:07.00\00:11:08.43 you know, Italian speaking ministers anymore. 00:11:08.46\00:11:10.50 Yeah. Yeah. 00:11:10.53\00:11:11.87 So thanks to him, 00:11:11.90\00:11:13.47 I got raised as a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:11:13.50\00:11:15.44 And when did it become real for you? 00:11:15.47\00:11:18.34 I mean, you know, 00:11:18.37\00:11:21.04 God has no grandchildren, He only has children. 00:11:21.08\00:11:24.31 So just because your parents are Adventists 00:11:24.35\00:11:27.58 and you grew up in an Adventist home 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.22 doesn't necessarily mean you're a child of God, 00:11:29.25\00:11:31.65 you have to make that personal choice. 00:11:31.69\00:11:33.79 When did it become real for you? 00:11:33.82\00:11:36.93 I can tell you right off the bat, 00:11:36.96\00:11:38.79 I was living in Alaska, 00:11:38.83\00:11:40.86 and my children were small. 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.10 And it was not a conference yet, 00:11:43.13\00:11:45.00 it was a mission. 00:11:45.03\00:11:46.53 And we were living about 18 miles 00:11:46.57\00:11:48.50 out of Anchorage, Alaska, 00:11:48.54\00:11:51.11 and they wanted to start a church out there. 00:11:51.14\00:11:54.38 And so they did a Revelation seminar 00:11:54.41\00:11:57.51 and we invited our neighbors 00:11:57.55\00:11:59.31 and we ended up with about five families 00:11:59.35\00:12:02.58 in this group that were gonna be 00:12:02.62\00:12:04.02 part of the church. 00:12:04.05\00:12:06.12 And so the president of the mission 00:12:06.15\00:12:10.16 at that time came to us and said, 00:12:10.19\00:12:13.83 "You have to teach these people how to run a church." 00:12:13.86\00:12:18.17 And I said, "Well, I'm sorry, 00:12:18.20\00:12:19.83 but I've only just warmed the pew 00:12:19.87\00:12:22.40 for 30 some odd years. 00:12:22.44\00:12:24.61 And I don't, I've never done those jobs in the church." 00:12:24.64\00:12:28.04 And they said, "But you've seen them done. 00:12:28.08\00:12:30.98 And you can tell them what you've seen, 00:12:31.01\00:12:33.98 and you can do it yourself." 00:12:34.02\00:12:36.05 And I grew spiritually in that time period 00:12:36.08\00:12:39.39 when my little children were growing up 00:12:39.42\00:12:41.39 because we started the church in Alaska. 00:12:41.42\00:12:43.76 Amen. 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.13 And, you know, I always say, 00:12:45.16\00:12:46.49 you learn to teach, you teach to learn, 00:12:46.53\00:12:49.66 there's nothing like sharing. 00:12:49.70\00:12:52.53 I think that's why God wants us to share our faith. 00:12:52.57\00:12:54.44 Really? 00:12:54.47\00:12:55.80 Now I just have to say this, 00:12:55.84\00:12:57.31 these two have the most amazing story of how they met. 00:12:57.34\00:13:01.28 He picked her out of a catalog. 00:13:01.31\00:13:05.68 Give us the Reader's Digest version of that. 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.52 Reader's Digest version. 00:13:08.55\00:13:11.12 I was living in North Carolina, working. 00:13:11.15\00:13:14.09 I had a law practice there. 00:13:14.12\00:13:15.76 I was a solo practitioner in a small town. 00:13:15.79\00:13:18.43 I needed to find a good woman. 00:13:18.46\00:13:23.40 And I know the difference 00:13:23.43\00:13:24.77 between a good woman and a bad one. 00:13:24.80\00:13:27.67 And my mother and my sister, 00:13:27.70\00:13:29.50 what I've received from my mother was some pages 00:13:29.54\00:13:32.51 from the California conference directory. 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.81 And there were some pictures of some lady circled. 00:13:34.84\00:13:37.71 And let me explain that for some 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.21 who may not be Adventist who are watching. 00:13:39.25\00:13:42.38 The conferences, an organized, 00:13:42.42\00:13:44.95 it's kind of church headquarters 00:13:44.99\00:13:47.42 or administration over a certain area. 00:13:47.46\00:13:50.03 So you work for the California Conference. 00:13:50.06\00:13:52.96 Communications department. Okay. 00:13:52.99\00:13:55.16 Okay, so you get this conference directory 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.67 with some pictures circled. 00:13:58.70\00:14:00.44 Yeah, and I called my mom, she lived in Michigan. 00:14:00.47\00:14:02.57 I said, "What is this?" 00:14:02.60\00:14:03.94 And she said, "Well, your sister and I, 00:14:03.97\00:14:06.14 my sister lived in California at the time, 00:14:06.17\00:14:08.21 and that my sister has beliefs that these are nice gals. 00:14:08.24\00:14:12.88 And I want you to call these gals." 00:14:12.91\00:14:14.78 And I said, "I'm not gonna do that, Mom, that's not, 00:14:14.82\00:14:17.15 so I'm not gonna do that." 00:14:17.19\00:14:19.19 She said, "Okay." She didn't say much. 00:14:19.22\00:14:21.09 But a couple days later, she said, 00:14:21.12\00:14:22.79 "Well, you've been looking at those pictures." 00:14:22.82\00:14:24.53 And I said, "Well, sure." 00:14:24.56\00:14:25.99 She says, "Call up these gals. 00:14:26.03\00:14:27.36 These are all good gals. 00:14:27.40\00:14:29.26 And I want you to meet these gals." 00:14:29.30\00:14:30.97 I said, "No." 00:14:31.00\00:14:33.57 And this kind of went on several times, 00:14:33.60\00:14:35.17 I finally got irritated. 00:14:35.20\00:14:36.54 I said, "Mom, if you think that's such a good idea, 00:14:36.57\00:14:38.61 you do it." 00:14:38.64\00:14:41.71 Mom says, "Well, if I do and I like one of these gals, 00:14:41.74\00:14:44.45 will you call?" 00:14:44.48\00:14:46.21 And I said, "All right." 00:14:46.25\00:14:47.75 She said, "Do you promise?" 00:14:47.78\00:14:49.12 And I said, "Yes." 00:14:49.15\00:14:50.52 Few days later she called and said. 00:14:50.55\00:14:52.25 What did she say to you when she called? 00:14:52.29\00:14:55.49 Well, just the basics. 00:14:55.52\00:14:56.86 I have a very handsome son who's single. 00:14:56.89\00:15:02.90 She was very honest with me. 00:15:02.93\00:15:04.63 She told me about his disability. 00:15:04.67\00:15:06.80 And that he was an attorney in North Carolina. 00:15:06.84\00:15:09.34 Yeah. 00:15:09.37\00:15:10.71 So I said, "Mom, I'm not gonna do this." 00:15:10.74\00:15:14.04 She said, "You promised." 00:15:14.08\00:15:16.18 So I called California 00:15:16.21\00:15:17.78 to apologize to Annette for my mother 00:15:17.81\00:15:20.92 and her audaciousness to call to say what you think. 00:15:20.95\00:15:25.45 And we began talking on the phone. 00:15:25.49\00:15:27.86 And I fell in love with her talking on the phone. 00:15:27.89\00:15:30.66 And pretty soon I was courting her through the mail. 00:15:30.69\00:15:33.23 We wrote letters, we sent pictures. 00:15:33.26\00:15:35.40 I was living in North Carolina. 00:15:35.43\00:15:36.87 She was living in California. 00:15:36.90\00:15:38.83 We didn't have a chance to date. 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.90 And finally, that was in January, 00:15:40.94\00:15:43.74 and in about April, she said, "I think it's time we meet." 00:15:43.77\00:15:47.11 And so I flew to California. 00:15:47.14\00:15:49.51 And she and I, 00:15:49.54\00:15:51.11 I met her at the Sacramento Airport. 00:15:51.15\00:15:54.48 We ran... And sparks were flying. 00:15:54.52\00:15:57.59 We just, we knew each other. We knew each other. 00:15:57.62\00:15:59.05 We felt very comfortable 00:15:59.09\00:16:00.42 because we got to know each other from the inside out. 00:16:00.46\00:16:05.29 Yes, yes. 00:16:05.33\00:16:06.66 We've already spent a lot of time praying 00:16:06.70\00:16:08.16 with each other on the phone. 00:16:08.20\00:16:09.66 In North Carolina, I could call after 11 at night. 00:16:09.70\00:16:12.53 And it was 8 o'clock in California time, right? 00:16:12.57\00:16:14.84 So I can get the cheap calls. 00:16:14.87\00:16:16.60 And we end up talking late at night. 00:16:16.64\00:16:19.44 And then we have prayer before we went away. 00:16:19.47\00:16:20.81 You know, we just got, 00:16:20.84\00:16:22.18 we got acquainted without dating. 00:16:22.21\00:16:23.55 Amen. And so we were there. 00:16:23.58\00:16:27.05 We met her parents, 00:16:27.08\00:16:28.72 and then she went to my sister's house at Lodi. 00:16:28.75\00:16:31.55 And I had to go back in three days 00:16:31.59\00:16:33.02 to continue my practice. 00:16:33.05\00:16:34.62 And about three weeks later, I proposed to her on the phone. 00:16:34.66\00:16:38.59 And she had some conditions. 00:16:38.63\00:16:40.83 I had a checklist. She had a checklist. 00:16:40.86\00:16:43.67 Good for you. 00:16:43.70\00:16:45.03 And one of her condition was, she says, "I want to come 00:16:45.07\00:16:48.34 and see my parents anytime I want." 00:16:48.37\00:16:50.51 I said, "No problem." 00:16:50.54\00:16:52.21 She said, "And I want to, I want you to help my parents." 00:16:52.24\00:16:55.84 No problem on that and she said, 00:16:55.88\00:16:57.61 "And I want to be a beautician." 00:16:57.65\00:17:00.75 I said, "Well, there's a little community college 00:17:00.78\00:17:02.48 about seven miles away 00:17:02.52\00:17:03.85 and they have beautician's class. 00:17:03.89\00:17:05.22 I had checked everything out I knew. 00:17:05.25\00:17:06.76 Amen. 00:17:06.79\00:17:08.12 And then I made 00:17:08.16\00:17:09.49 the convincing argument was this. 00:17:09.52\00:17:11.79 There's no way we can date, 00:17:11.83\00:17:13.16 this is either work or it'll be a terrible mistake 00:17:13.19\00:17:15.90 and there's no way to find out. 00:17:15.93\00:17:18.13 And thank the good Lord, she said, yes. 00:17:18.17\00:17:20.70 And that was 22 years ago next month. 00:17:20.74\00:17:22.27 Praise God. 00:17:22.30\00:17:23.84 We believe God put us together. We do. 00:17:23.87\00:17:25.77 Absolutely. We do. 00:17:25.81\00:17:27.14 Absolutely. 00:17:27.18\00:17:28.51 Okay, so now let's talk about 00:17:28.54\00:17:31.35 the ministry that you're doing. 00:17:31.38\00:17:33.21 You know, for our viewers at home, 00:17:33.25\00:17:35.82 you may recall not too long ago in the news, 00:17:35.85\00:17:39.75 they were talking about a couple 00:17:39.79\00:17:41.12 who were hiking and got lost and had no supplies with 00:17:41.16\00:17:45.16 and they were out of water, 00:17:45.19\00:17:46.53 but they had some kind of little straw 00:17:46.56\00:17:48.80 that they were able to filter the water through. 00:17:48.83\00:17:51.57 And that's the only reason they survived. 00:17:51.60\00:17:53.54 You know, when you think about water, 00:17:53.57\00:17:56.74 you and I take for granted 00:17:56.77\00:17:58.57 that we can turn a tap and have clean water. 00:17:58.61\00:18:02.51 Well, we take it for granted around here most of the time. 00:18:02.54\00:18:05.21 We do have water, 00:18:05.25\00:18:06.68 boiled water alerts every now and then. 00:18:06.72\00:18:09.58 But can you imagine 00:18:09.62\00:18:11.89 if you lived in an area 00:18:11.92\00:18:14.82 where you had to go to a river, 00:18:14.86\00:18:19.79 a dirty river to get your water? 00:18:19.83\00:18:22.40 I mean, I've seen them and sometimes 00:18:22.43\00:18:24.43 I wouldn't even want to wash my clothes in them. 00:18:24.47\00:18:27.50 But can you imagine having to give your infant child water 00:18:27.54\00:18:31.41 that has parasites in it, water that can kill them? 00:18:31.44\00:18:35.51 Did you know that dirty water is one of the greatest killers 00:18:35.54\00:18:39.21 of children around the world? 00:18:39.25\00:18:40.58 It is. 00:18:40.62\00:18:41.95 Contaminated water kills more children 00:18:41.98\00:18:43.32 than any other single disease or process. 00:18:43.35\00:18:47.26 And in Guatemala, I've been in villages 00:18:47.29\00:18:49.16 where women are getting water for their homes 00:18:49.19\00:18:51.36 out of one side of a small pond 00:18:51.39\00:18:53.03 and cattle are standing in the water on the other side. 00:18:53.06\00:18:55.33 Oh, my goodness. 00:18:55.36\00:18:56.70 And you know, a baby. 00:18:56.73\00:18:58.30 If a baby gets some bad water in two or three days 00:18:58.33\00:19:01.97 of diarrhea and vomiting, 00:19:02.00\00:19:04.91 pretty soon that baby's dehydrated, 00:19:04.94\00:19:06.71 and that baby will die. 00:19:06.74\00:19:08.34 And that happens a lot. 00:19:08.38\00:19:11.25 And we've been in villages after we've drilled well over 00:19:11.28\00:19:13.98 and village elders will come and say, 00:19:14.02\00:19:15.48 "This is the first year 00:19:15.52\00:19:17.15 that no children have died in our village." 00:19:17.19\00:19:18.99 That's amazing. Praise the Lord for that. 00:19:19.02\00:19:20.89 Let's back up just a second. Hang on. 00:19:20.92\00:19:23.19 Let's back up just a second and talk about 00:19:23.22\00:19:26.29 'cause we just jumped right into it. 00:19:26.33\00:19:28.46 Water for Life, what is your mission? 00:19:28.50\00:19:32.07 Tell us what Water for Life is all about 00:19:32.10\00:19:34.40 and how it started? 00:19:34.44\00:19:36.07 Water for Life was started by Gary Bartholomew 00:19:36.10\00:19:38.31 and his son Rod in Spokane, Washington. 00:19:38.34\00:19:41.54 They were organized to try to do something 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.25 about a contaminated water problem 00:19:44.28\00:19:46.88 for an orphanage and school in Northeast Guatemala, 00:19:46.92\00:19:50.49 the Petén region in Guatemala. 00:19:50.52\00:19:52.72 Gary had adopted a child. 00:19:52.75\00:19:54.29 Gary and Angie had adopted a child there, 00:19:54.32\00:19:56.59 years before 00:19:56.62\00:19:57.96 and had stayed in touch with the orphanage, 00:19:57.99\00:20:00.36 and as the area developed 00:20:00.40\00:20:03.26 and upstream there was more development, 00:20:03.30\00:20:05.57 the water became more and more contaminated. 00:20:05.60\00:20:08.47 They were getting water out of a hole in the river. 00:20:08.50\00:20:11.17 And for many years it was good water 00:20:11.21\00:20:13.68 but after it became more contaminated, 00:20:13.71\00:20:15.74 especially in the dry season, 00:20:15.78\00:20:17.58 when the water level was low, the contaminant part is high. 00:20:17.61\00:20:22.28 And some children there got very sick. 00:20:22.32\00:20:24.72 One of the teachers almost died from amoeba in the water 00:20:24.75\00:20:28.32 and Gary determined to do something about it. 00:20:28.36\00:20:31.13 And what was Gary's profession? 00:20:31.16\00:20:32.93 Gary was in the well drilling business. 00:20:32.96\00:20:34.30 Albeit. 00:20:34.33\00:20:35.66 And had worked around well drillers all his life. 00:20:35.70\00:20:38.53 He had operated Bartholomew pumping 00:20:38.57\00:20:41.27 well service there in Spokane. 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.71 And he was really the start of it. 00:20:43.74\00:20:47.14 But I'll tell you, the Lord started as well. 00:20:47.18\00:20:48.74 Amen. 00:20:48.78\00:20:50.11 But can you imagine, he been a well driller, 00:20:50.15\00:20:54.15 and he was familiar with that area 00:20:54.18\00:20:56.99 and knowing that the children were getting very sick 00:20:57.02\00:20:59.69 and almost dying, 00:20:59.72\00:21:01.52 can you imagine the burden on his heart, 00:21:01.56\00:21:04.49 who want to do something about it. 00:21:04.53\00:21:05.99 Amen. Amen. 00:21:06.03\00:21:07.36 And what Gary did was, he put an ad 00:21:07.40\00:21:09.60 in the Washington Well Drillers Association magazine 00:21:09.63\00:21:13.27 for someone to donate a drilling rig. 00:21:13.30\00:21:16.14 And a Mennonite company in Silverton, Oregon, 00:21:16.17\00:21:19.04 Stadeli and Sons call him up and said, "What are you after?" 00:21:19.07\00:21:22.94 And he said, "Well, we need a drilling rig." 00:21:22.98\00:21:24.78 And they said, "Well, we have an old cable rig 00:21:24.81\00:21:27.48 that we will donate to you, if you're interested." 00:21:27.52\00:21:31.09 And Gary said, "Are we interested? 00:21:31.12\00:21:32.52 Yes, we are." 00:21:32.55\00:21:34.02 Well, these folks refurbished that rig 00:21:34.06\00:21:36.69 and that rig was donated. 00:21:36.73\00:21:39.26 Gary, at his own expense shipped it to Guatemala. 00:21:39.29\00:21:42.70 And I became aware of Water for Life 00:21:42.73\00:21:44.53 when I was preaching 00:21:44.57\00:21:46.20 at the countryside Adventist Church, 00:21:46.23\00:21:48.34 giving a sermon on religious liberty 00:21:48.37\00:21:50.01 because I'm a lawyer. 00:21:50.04\00:21:51.37 People want to hear that. 00:21:51.41\00:21:52.94 And at a break, 00:21:52.97\00:21:54.81 I heard Gary say, 00:21:54.84\00:21:56.18 "The well drill has been noticed 00:21:56.21\00:21:58.55 in the custom's yard in Puerto Barrios, Guatemala." 00:21:58.58\00:22:01.28 And I heard this, 00:22:01.32\00:22:02.65 praise the Lord, praise the Lord. 00:22:02.68\00:22:04.12 I'm wondering, "What is this all about?" 00:22:04.15\00:22:06.29 And afterwards, I got a moment to speak with Gary, 00:22:06.32\00:22:09.12 and ask him, and he told me that 00:22:09.16\00:22:10.53 they were trying to solve this problem 00:22:10.56\00:22:12.63 with the contaminated water at this orphanage. 00:22:12.66\00:22:15.53 And I became interested in it. 00:22:15.56\00:22:17.57 And that was visiting our grandchild over in Seattle. 00:22:17.60\00:22:21.80 And I told Gary, I said, 00:22:21.84\00:22:23.17 "Count me and I'll buy the first tank of fuel 00:22:23.20\00:22:24.91 for your rig." 00:22:24.94\00:22:26.88 And I called Annette and I said, 00:22:26.91\00:22:28.64 "You want to go to Guatemala?" 00:22:28.68\00:22:30.08 And I said, "Why, why? 00:22:30.11\00:22:33.62 I knew nothing about it." Yeah. 00:22:33.65\00:22:36.58 Yeah, that's a strange request, isn't it? 00:22:36.62\00:22:39.49 And so that afternoon, I kept looking at Expedia 00:22:39.52\00:22:42.62 and these sites for tickets, 00:22:42.66\00:22:44.56 and I kept calling Annette and talking to about it. 00:22:44.59\00:22:47.46 And finally I said, listen, 00:22:47.50\00:22:48.83 I really want to go and check this out. 00:22:48.86\00:22:50.43 She said, "Well, if you're going, I'm going." 00:22:50.47\00:22:52.90 So I click, I put, 00:22:52.93\00:22:54.50 I clicked the button 00:22:54.54\00:22:55.87 and I bought a couple of tickets, 00:22:55.90\00:22:57.87 and that was 15 years ago. 00:22:57.91\00:22:59.67 And we were there 00:22:59.71\00:23:01.04 when the first wells were drilled 00:23:01.08\00:23:02.41 with that old drilling rig that 1946... 00:23:02.44\00:23:06.85 1946, yeah. 00:23:06.88\00:23:08.22 It was a 00:23:08.25\00:23:10.69 and there's some miracles that have occurred 00:23:10.72\00:23:13.52 that I'd be happy to tell you about if we have the time. 00:23:13.56\00:23:16.59 Sure. 00:23:16.62\00:23:17.96 But the good news is, 00:23:17.99\00:23:19.33 is that with an old unit like that, 00:23:19.36\00:23:22.00 it could be repaired. 00:23:22.03\00:23:23.37 Yes, technology that's 40 years old technology 00:23:23.40\00:23:27.00 here in the States 00:23:27.04\00:23:28.37 and everything is rotary rigs here. 00:23:28.40\00:23:30.51 Drill your well in a day. 00:23:30.54\00:23:32.27 Down there, it's two weeks or so using these old rigs. 00:23:32.31\00:23:35.98 But we could repair it down there, 00:23:36.01\00:23:37.68 a welder and some cable, and you're back in business. 00:23:37.71\00:23:40.68 And with someone that had experienced 00:23:40.72\00:23:42.95 that the Lord had put on his heart 00:23:42.98\00:23:45.15 and prearranged things years and years, 00:23:45.19\00:23:47.56 centuries, eons ago, 00:23:47.59\00:23:49.59 that there would be a little girl there 00:23:49.62\00:23:51.26 that they want to be part of their family. 00:23:51.29\00:23:52.69 That's right. 00:23:52.73\00:23:54.06 I mean, if you can look at the big picture 00:23:54.10\00:23:55.43 and then how do you get trust 00:23:55.46\00:23:58.43 in the strangers that you've never met? 00:23:58.47\00:24:01.97 What's better than clean water? 00:24:02.00\00:24:04.14 Nothing better, you meet their needs. 00:24:04.17\00:24:06.14 Here in the US, we are so blessed. 00:24:06.17\00:24:07.91 We water our lawns with treatable water. 00:24:07.94\00:24:11.05 Yes. 00:24:11.08\00:24:12.41 And down there people die for clean water. 00:24:12.45\00:24:15.52 Isn't that amazing? 00:24:15.55\00:24:17.52 And that old drilling rig worked down there, 00:24:17.55\00:24:20.26 we've had a lot of wonderful miracles. 00:24:20.29\00:24:23.73 When that drilling rig got there, 00:24:23.76\00:24:25.19 our friend Bernie Leonardo is, 00:24:25.23\00:24:28.33 he was trying to get it through customs. 00:24:28.36\00:24:30.60 And he got a call from Gary and says, 00:24:30.63\00:24:32.03 "Gary, we can't find the VIN number on that rig." 00:24:32.07\00:24:36.24 And we had paperwork 00:24:36.27\00:24:38.01 and it had to match what was coming in. 00:24:38.04\00:24:40.41 Gary called the Stadeli down there and said, 00:24:40.44\00:24:43.48 "Where's the VIN number on that old truck?" 00:24:43.51\00:24:45.21 And they said, "We don't know. 00:24:45.25\00:24:46.58 We've hauled it around on a lowboy for 20 years 00:24:46.61\00:24:49.32 which not been licensed. 00:24:49.35\00:24:51.89 And the customs man said, 00:24:51.92\00:24:54.72 "No VIN number, no truck." 00:24:54.76\00:24:56.93 Very simple. 00:24:56.96\00:24:58.53 Bernie went to a little hotel in Puerto Barrios 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.80 and spent the night in prayer. 00:25:00.83\00:25:02.66 In the morning, he went back 00:25:02.70\00:25:04.47 and as he was waiting at a bus station. 00:25:04.50\00:25:06.77 He went in a little tee under there 00:25:06.80\00:25:08.67 and found one of those plastic label makers, 00:25:08.70\00:25:11.54 you know, you squeeze the little thing 00:25:11.57\00:25:12.94 and it prints them up, he had the paperwork. 00:25:12.97\00:25:15.54 He printed out a little label in blue. 00:25:15.58\00:25:18.61 And he went back to the customs yard 00:25:18.65\00:25:20.58 and said to the guy, 00:25:20.62\00:25:21.95 "Can I go out there and look one more time?" 00:25:21.98\00:25:24.22 The guy said, sure. 00:25:24.25\00:25:25.65 Bernie went out there 00:25:25.69\00:25:27.02 and he fastened that little label somewhere 00:25:27.06\00:25:29.02 in an obscure place on that truck. 00:25:29.06\00:25:30.56 And goes I found the number. 00:25:30.59\00:25:32.86 And the guy came out and he looked at paper, 00:25:32.89\00:25:35.03 he looked at number, which is fine, no problem. 00:25:35.06\00:25:37.30 Come on. Amen. 00:27:31.25\00:27:33.55 Here's the Bible that tells about God's love, 00:27:33.58\00:27:36.25 and people's hearts are opened 00:27:36.28\00:27:38.72 and we maintain these wells year round. 00:27:38.75\00:27:41.96 More than 30,000 people use our water every day, 00:27:41.99\00:27:45.86 our water, it's God's water. 00:27:45.89\00:27:47.26 We just help get it for them. 00:27:47.30\00:27:49.26 But 30,000 people today are drinking water 00:27:49.30\00:27:51.67 provided by Water for Life. 00:27:51.70\00:27:53.77 And it's not only the water that gives them health, 00:27:53.80\00:27:57.07 but we bring them the Bible 00:27:57.11\00:27:58.44 which is the Water of Life and it opens people's hearts. 00:27:58.47\00:28:02.88 In a little village called Kahin, 00:28:02.91\00:28:05.11 there was churches where... 00:28:05.15\00:28:07.55 Sunday keeping churches were not... 00:28:07.58\00:28:10.69 They weren't very active. 00:28:10.72\00:28:12.39 But a lady who was the elder in the church 00:28:12.42\00:28:14.72 became convinced of the Sabbath. 00:28:14.76\00:28:17.13 And she talked all her congregation members 00:28:17.16\00:28:20.53 into keeping the Sabbath. 00:28:20.56\00:28:22.36 And they all started coming back to church, 00:28:22.40\00:28:24.50 but now they're worshiping on Sabbath. 00:28:24.53\00:28:27.10 I don't think they're Adventist yet, 00:28:27.14\00:28:29.70 but they're worshiping the Lord on the Sabbath day 00:28:29.74\00:28:33.01 and as a result of that. 00:28:33.04\00:28:34.38 And they're more healthy than they were before. 00:28:34.41\00:28:36.51 Yes, they are. 00:28:36.54\00:28:37.88 We maintain these wells year around. 00:28:37.91\00:28:40.38 Now, Annette, do you travel with Tim every trip or... 00:28:40.42\00:28:45.32 There's a few times I haven't gone, 00:28:45.35\00:28:47.06 but in the last 14 years, I've gone almost every year. 00:28:47.09\00:28:50.79 And then what do you do while you're there? 00:28:50.83\00:28:53.09 Well, I started out with my job experience 00:28:53.13\00:28:56.36 as a school secretary 00:28:56.40\00:28:57.83 and I've been around children for many years, 00:28:57.87\00:29:00.84 and I used to teach crafts in the summertime 00:29:00.87\00:29:03.81 when they had day camp, 00:29:03.84\00:29:05.87 and also taught yearbook class, 00:29:05.91\00:29:08.64 and I have a certificate in desktop 00:29:08.68\00:29:11.11 publishing and do graphics. 00:29:11.15\00:29:13.25 That's what I was doing at the conference office. 00:29:13.28\00:29:16.05 And so my greatest interest, 00:29:16.08\00:29:20.26 strongest interest is in art. 00:29:20.29\00:29:22.19 Yes. 00:29:22.22\00:29:23.56 And then hair, I'm a beautician. 00:29:23.59\00:29:25.46 So I can do haircuts with the kids 00:29:25.49\00:29:27.96 and they love that. 00:29:28.00\00:29:29.60 But my fun was in 00:29:29.63\00:29:34.40 bringing supplies to do crafts with them. 00:29:34.44\00:29:37.31 Oh, here you got some pictures. 00:29:37.34\00:29:39.81 This was the most basic thing 00:29:39.84\00:29:42.68 that they loved the most and the easiest thing 00:29:42.71\00:29:45.18 because when I was in preparation 00:29:45.21\00:29:47.08 during the year I had to think of things 00:29:47.12\00:29:49.95 that I could show them without a lot of Spanish, 00:29:49.98\00:29:53.69 'cause I didn't know Spanish. 00:29:53.72\00:29:55.89 And I had to do a lot of thinking 00:29:55.92\00:29:57.86 about how they saw it, 00:29:57.89\00:30:00.43 and how they could learn it there in the most simple way. 00:30:00.46\00:30:04.57 So I took a little stretchy band 00:30:04.60\00:30:06.57 and some yarn, sparkly yarn. 00:30:06.60\00:30:10.01 And I showed them 00:30:10.04\00:30:11.37 how to make a little scrunchie for their ponytails. 00:30:11.41\00:30:13.78 And they all have this really thick, heavy long hair. 00:30:13.81\00:30:17.01 And they need scrunchies they need, 00:30:17.05\00:30:18.95 you know, stretchy band. 00:30:18.98\00:30:20.85 So they learned it very easily. 00:30:20.88\00:30:23.99 It was a very easy pattern and they were so beautiful. 00:30:24.02\00:30:26.69 And when you got done with this thing 00:30:26.72\00:30:29.86 that I taught them, it looked like a bird's nest 00:30:29.89\00:30:32.96 and they could put it in their hair. 00:30:32.99\00:30:35.10 And then they wanted to do all the colors. 00:30:35.13\00:30:37.83 And I had every colors of the rainbow 00:30:37.87\00:30:39.80 and they were very sparkly type of thing. 00:30:39.83\00:30:43.74 And so then the next Sabbath after I taught them 00:30:43.77\00:30:46.24 how to do this, 00:30:46.27\00:30:47.61 I was sitting in the back of the church, 00:30:47.64\00:30:49.81 and here I saw them with their scrunchies. 00:30:49.84\00:30:51.85 Oh, how sweet. Yeah. 00:30:51.88\00:30:54.02 All over the church. 00:30:54.05\00:30:55.38 It was so fun. Amen. 00:30:55.42\00:30:56.75 In villages, we go out to villages 00:30:56.79\00:30:59.02 and Annette will take some crayons 00:30:59.05\00:31:00.86 and make friends with the children. 00:31:00.89\00:31:02.59 Yes. 00:31:02.62\00:31:03.96 And Bernie and I may be looking at the well 00:31:03.99\00:31:05.39 and seeing what the condition of the pumps and things. 00:31:05.43\00:31:08.33 But Annette's making friends with these children, 00:31:08.36\00:31:10.83 and children love colors. 00:31:10.87\00:31:12.90 You pass out crayons, pretty soon it breaks the ice, 00:31:12.93\00:31:15.64 if you're there and they're a little nervous 00:31:15.67\00:31:18.41 and they don't see many white people, 00:31:18.44\00:31:20.54 and pretty soon we're looking at stuff 00:31:20.58\00:31:22.61 and we don't talk too good. 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.58 And then that's over there with the children 00:31:24.61\00:31:26.21 and they're passing out stuff 00:31:26.25\00:31:27.58 and pretty soon the ice is just broken in. 00:31:27.62\00:31:29.28 Praise God. 00:31:29.32\00:31:30.65 It takes a little while because 00:31:30.69\00:31:32.02 we're very tall compared to them. 00:31:32.05\00:31:33.39 Yes. 00:31:33.42\00:31:34.76 And they've never seen people so tall and so white. 00:31:34.79\00:31:37.46 Yeah. 00:31:37.49\00:31:38.83 Let me ask something for the guys out here. 00:31:38.86\00:31:40.93 Just a quick technical just so I can get this. 00:31:40.96\00:31:44.13 So we got the rig out there and the rig, 00:31:44.17\00:31:46.37 now we're waiting for the volunteers 00:31:46.40\00:31:47.90 to come down to run the rig, is that right? 00:31:47.94\00:31:49.84 Yes. 00:31:49.87\00:31:51.21 Okay, so let's just say hypothetically, 00:31:51.24\00:31:53.48 October the 15th, we're gonna all meet there. 00:31:53.51\00:31:56.44 The volunteers are gonna come in, 00:31:56.48\00:31:58.71 is this limestone that they're going through? 00:31:58.75\00:32:00.82 It's almost all limestone.
