Oh, yeah. 00:01:50.94\00:01:52.27 I think adventurous will be the way it starts, 00:01:52.31\00:01:53.98 but you'll learn today in this program 00:01:54.01\00:01:56.51 that this couple is more than adventurous, 00:01:56.54\00:01:58.75 very well trained. 00:01:58.78\00:02:00.22 And the Lord has blessed them 00:02:00.25\00:02:01.58 not only in their academia to prepare for what they do 00:02:01.62\00:02:04.49 on a daily basis and a weekly basis 00:02:04.52\00:02:06.62 but also you have to have a passion 00:02:06.65\00:02:08.49 for what this couple does. 00:02:08.52\00:02:09.86 Yeah, it's ministry, isn't it? 00:02:09.89\00:02:11.23 It's ministry. 00:02:11.26\00:02:12.59 It's International Rescue and Relief. 00:02:12.63\00:02:15.33 And you'll meet them in just a moment. 00:02:15.36\00:02:17.17 But thank you for your prayers and support of this network 00:02:17.20\00:02:19.27 that keeps us going and growing, 00:02:19.30\00:02:21.10 getting ready for the coming of the Lord. 00:02:21.14\00:02:22.87 I think I'm going to let you introduce them. 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.57 Oh, wow. 00:02:24.61\00:02:25.94 I'm so excited. We have... 00:02:25.97\00:02:28.01 Well, we have Andrew and Kalie Saunders. 00:02:28.04\00:02:31.91 And they are from, well, Lincoln, Nebraska right now. 00:02:31.95\00:02:35.92 But Kalie is more than... 00:02:35.95\00:02:39.52 She's family to us. 00:02:39.55\00:02:41.26 Kalie, we used to go to our school, 00:02:41.29\00:02:44.03 and her mom was the principal of our school, Nancy O'Brien. 00:02:44.06\00:02:48.03 It must have been nice, huh, 00:02:50.17\00:02:51.50 having your mom as a principal, your teacher? 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.54 Depends on how you behave. 00:02:53.57\00:02:55.80 That's right. 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.41 And your dad, Joe O'Brien, 00:02:57.44\00:02:59.97 he's been in the pastoral department, 00:03:00.01\00:03:01.71 he said, "For 20 years..." 00:03:01.74\00:03:03.75 So many people call in and they speak to Joe 00:03:03.78\00:03:07.72 and he's prayed and spoken with many people. 00:03:07.75\00:03:11.32 So we're so happy to have you. 00:03:11.35\00:03:13.15 And of course, your husband, glad to have you here. 00:03:13.19\00:03:17.16 And you've been married... How long you been married now? 00:03:17.33\00:03:20.10 Almost seven years. 00:03:20.13\00:03:21.56 Wow. Wow. 00:03:21.60\00:03:23.13 Almost seven years already. 00:03:23.16\00:03:25.33 And tell us, Andrew, 00:03:25.37\00:03:26.74 a little bit about your background. 00:03:26.77\00:03:28.10 Yes, tell us. 00:03:28.14\00:03:29.47 We talked about Kalie growing up here. 00:03:29.50\00:03:30.84 We've been here now, wow, 16 years 00:03:30.87\00:03:32.84 and seen Kalie grow up 00:03:32.87\00:03:34.48 and are very proud of the road you've taken. 00:03:34.51\00:03:37.08 And the life partner that God sent 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.71 to be a part of your life. 00:03:39.75\00:03:41.08 But give us some of your background 00:03:41.12\00:03:42.48 'cause maybe our viewers and listeners 00:03:42.52\00:03:43.89 might say we know Kalie, 00:03:43.92\00:03:46.19 but we don't really know who Andrew is. 00:03:46.22\00:03:47.99 Yeah. 00:03:48.02\00:03:49.36 So I grew up in the mission field, 00:03:49.39\00:03:50.99 a different mission field than 3ABN. 00:03:51.03\00:03:52.53 But my parents were... 00:03:52.56\00:03:54.00 My dad was a surgeon in West Africa, 00:03:54.03\00:03:57.10 in the country of Nigeria. 00:03:57.17\00:03:58.90 And so I grew up there for 10 years in Nigeria. 00:03:58.93\00:04:02.90 And it's kind of given me a passion 00:04:04.84\00:04:06.17 to continue in mission and work internationally, so... 00:04:06.21\00:04:10.05 And kind of what does your dad do? 00:04:10.25\00:04:12.31 So he's a general surgeon. 00:04:12.35\00:04:13.75 He's back living in Africa, again, in Malawi, 00:04:13.82\00:04:16.72 different hospital but same mission, 00:04:16.79\00:04:18.12 he's trying to build local capacity 00:04:18.15\00:04:22.09 so that we don't have to send 00:04:22.49\00:04:24.86 foreign missionaries any more necessarily 00:04:24.89\00:04:26.39 but training up local people to take on the mantle 00:04:26.43\00:04:28.73 and minister to their own people. 00:04:28.76\00:04:30.70 Wow. 00:04:30.77\00:04:32.10 And, honey, while we've seen Kalie 00:04:32.13\00:04:33.74 grow up here, you know, 00:04:33.77\00:04:35.10 the question would be in my mind, 00:04:35.14\00:04:37.87 how did you both decide to choose what you do now 00:04:37.91\00:04:41.41 and kind of describe that to our viewers and listeners 00:04:41.44\00:04:44.45 how did you decide to choose 00:04:44.48\00:04:45.81 what you do now as a life dedication, 00:04:45.85\00:04:47.95 as a job, as a career? 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.45 I think it's hard to say, you know, 00:04:49.48\00:04:52.05 as a 17-year-old, 18-year-old, like graduating high school, 00:04:52.09\00:04:56.06 it's almost impossible to be able to say, 00:04:56.32\00:04:58.96 I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. 00:04:58.99\00:05:00.70 Like there's just very few people 00:05:00.73\00:05:02.50 that actually get that opportunity. 00:05:02.53\00:05:04.77 So I was one of those people 00:05:04.80\00:05:06.13 that I didn't know exactly where I wanted my life to go, 00:05:06.17\00:05:09.34 I just knew that I wanted to live a life of service, 00:05:09.37\00:05:12.47 where I could serve the people 00:05:12.51\00:05:14.08 that needed the most help, wherever that was. 00:05:14.11\00:05:16.95 And so personally, I was drawn to 00:05:16.98\00:05:19.38 the International Rescue and Relief Program 00:05:19.41\00:05:21.85 at Union College 00:05:21.88\00:05:23.22 because, on top of being an academic program, 00:05:23.25\00:05:26.96 a bachelor's of science degree, 00:05:26.99\00:05:28.89 it also had a lot of adventure to it. 00:05:28.92\00:05:32.09 Part of the program is learning survival 00:05:32.13\00:05:35.16 and swift water rescue and technical rope rescue 00:05:35.20\00:05:38.00 and search and rescue, and there's a semester abroad. 00:05:38.03\00:05:41.37 And I just thought, you know, 00:05:41.40\00:05:42.74 this is a great way to go into a life of service, 00:05:42.77\00:05:44.94 even if I'm not exactly sure 00:05:44.97\00:05:46.71 where I want to end up after it. 00:05:46.78\00:05:48.98 Wow. 00:05:49.01\00:05:50.35 And so when you talk about all these things, 00:05:50.38\00:05:51.95 where's your office? 00:05:51.98\00:05:54.92 Well, for the last three months, 00:05:54.95\00:05:56.69 our office was in Malawi. 00:05:56.72\00:05:59.35 Wow. 00:05:59.39\00:06:00.76 But it's arranged, 00:06:00.79\00:06:02.12 it's gone from several countries 00:06:02.16\00:06:04.23 to several states, just depends. 00:06:04.26\00:06:07.10 Where have you traveled 00:06:07.13\00:06:08.60 to do this mission, I should say? 00:06:08.63\00:06:12.60 Where have you traveled to as a couple? 00:06:12.90\00:06:16.54 As a couple, we've traveled... 00:06:16.57\00:06:19.51 We actually used to work for ADRA. 00:06:19.54\00:06:21.91 After we graduated 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.28 with the International Rescue and Relief bachelor's degree, 00:06:23.35\00:06:26.82 we went on to get our master's degree 00:06:26.85\00:06:29.15 in International Development Administration 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.59 with an emphasis in emergency management 00:06:31.62\00:06:33.89 from Andrews University. 00:06:33.96\00:06:35.99 And so once we had our masters there, 00:06:36.02\00:06:38.66 we actually were hired by ADRA. 00:06:38.69\00:06:40.53 And my husband and I 00:06:40.60\00:06:41.93 both worked for ADRA in Ukraine, 00:06:41.96\00:06:44.73 responding to the civil conflict there, 00:06:44.77\00:06:46.97 and then also worked for ADRA in Iraq 00:06:47.04\00:06:50.14 with the Syrian refugees 00:06:50.21\00:06:52.14 at the height of the crisis there. 00:06:52.17\00:06:53.81 Oh, my. 00:06:53.88\00:06:55.21 That must have been pretty dangerous 00:06:55.24\00:06:57.58 being out there in Iraq. 00:06:57.65\00:07:00.05 Yeah, so we were 40 kilometers or so from the frontlines, 00:07:00.12\00:07:04.09 you would say, where ISIS was fighting. 00:07:06.52\00:07:09.59 But where we were, we were well taken care of. 00:07:09.62\00:07:12.66 The ADRA staff were wonderful 00:07:12.69\00:07:14.50 and made sure that we were never in danger. 00:07:14.53\00:07:16.77 Wow. What were you doing there? 00:07:16.80\00:07:19.90 My husband, he can tell you about it. 00:07:19.93\00:07:21.37 He was working very hard. 00:07:21.40\00:07:24.54 Yeah, it was... 00:07:24.57\00:07:26.31 It was a big job. 00:07:26.34\00:07:27.68 Like, at the time, 00:07:27.71\00:07:29.04 there were several million people, 00:07:29.08\00:07:30.45 both Iraqi displaced from the war 00:07:30.48\00:07:31.88 and then Syrians coming in that were also displaced, 00:07:31.91\00:07:35.02 so both refugees and internally displaced people we call them. 00:07:35.05\00:07:39.02 And we were trying to do our part, 00:07:39.52\00:07:41.42 we had a partnership with 00:07:41.46\00:07:43.83 the International Department of Humanitarian Affairs 00:07:43.86\00:07:46.93 in Canada, 00:07:47.00\00:07:48.33 they were funding our project through ADRA. 00:07:48.36\00:07:50.77 And we were doing cash for rent to give people places to stay. 00:07:50.80\00:07:54.37 The camps were full. 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.74 There wasn't space for more people 00:07:55.77\00:07:57.11 to come into the camps. 00:07:57.14\00:07:58.47 So we were trying to find them housing 00:07:58.51\00:07:59.84 and trying to integrate them into the community, 00:07:59.87\00:08:01.61 provide psychosocial support, 00:08:01.64\00:08:04.45 vouchers so they could be able to afford hygiene items 00:08:04.48\00:08:08.35 like laundry soap and just personal hygiene items 00:08:08.38\00:08:12.35 and things like that. 00:08:12.49\00:08:13.86 So, it was a $1.4 million project, 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.83 and we're able to reach about 7,000 people, so... 00:08:16.86\00:08:18.86 Wow. 00:08:18.89\00:08:20.30 So while there is some adventure 00:08:20.33\00:08:21.86 and some tentative moments 00:08:21.90\00:08:23.87 where you wonder what's going to happen, 00:08:23.90\00:08:25.40 what could happen, 00:08:25.43\00:08:27.04 the heightened aspects of it are there 00:08:27.07\00:08:29.40 because of the field you're in or the theater that you're in. 00:08:29.44\00:08:32.57 But for the most part, you stay out of harm's way. 00:08:32.61\00:08:36.58 But obviously, anything is possible 00:08:36.85\00:08:39.15 in the world that we live in. 00:08:39.18\00:08:40.82 But I'm interested 00:08:40.85\00:08:42.48 because when you talk about International Relief and Rescue 00:08:42.52\00:08:46.15 and both of you teach this at Union College. 00:08:46.19\00:08:49.52 Talk about that a little bit because somebody might say, 00:08:49.56\00:08:51.96 "International Relief and Rescue, 00:08:51.99\00:08:54.03 what do you actually teach?" 00:08:54.10\00:08:55.83 Tell me some of the specifics of the program. 00:08:55.86\00:08:59.57 All right. 00:08:59.60\00:09:00.94 So it has a wide range of classes, 00:09:00.97\00:09:04.51 and it kind of tries to prepare you 00:09:04.54\00:09:05.87 for one of three different tracks. 00:09:05.91\00:09:07.88 We have three emphases. 00:09:07.91\00:09:09.54 You can go public safety, 00:09:09.58\00:09:10.95 which would be police, fire, EMS, 00:09:10.98\00:09:13.18 somewhere along those lines. 00:09:13.21\00:09:15.08 And then with one of those, 00:09:15.12\00:09:16.45 you'd spend three years at Union 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.19 with the fourth year either at police academy 00:09:18.22\00:09:19.89 or paramedic school or something like that. 00:09:19.92\00:09:22.29 And the first three years 00:09:22.32\00:09:23.66 are focused on getting your EMT license, 00:09:23.73\00:09:25.73 some advanced skills like airway and breathing skills. 00:09:25.76\00:09:29.73 We get wilderness medicine certifications. 00:09:30.97\00:09:34.54 All units in the US who do disaster response 00:09:34.57\00:09:37.74 use the incident command system. 00:09:37.77\00:09:39.17 So that way, if units come from anywhere 00:09:39.21\00:09:40.91 in the US to a disaster, 00:09:40.98\00:09:42.98 we can all know how each other work 00:09:43.01\00:09:44.35 and fit into that command structure. 00:09:44.38\00:09:46.38 So we teach that system so our people can fit right in. 00:09:46.41\00:09:49.98 We teach technical rescue. 00:09:50.02\00:09:52.02 So like Kalie said, 00:09:52.05\00:09:53.39 we have swift water, technical rope, 00:09:53.46\00:09:54.89 search and rescue, flood water management. 00:09:54.92\00:09:58.66 And then we also offer electives every year, 00:09:58.69\00:10:00.93 and it could be advanced rope skills 00:10:00.96\00:10:02.83 or ice rescue or confined space 00:10:02.86\00:10:04.83 or things like that that people can take beyond that 00:10:04.87\00:10:07.34 if they're interested in that field. 00:10:07.37\00:10:11.11 And then we also have tracks that do pre-professional. 00:10:11.14\00:10:14.31 So if you want to do pre-med, pre-dent, pre-PA, 00:10:14.34\00:10:16.78 something like that, 00:10:16.85\00:10:18.18 you can also do the IR major and take all these classes, 00:10:18.21\00:10:20.22 and it's a bit more fun 00:10:20.25\00:10:21.58 than just your standard biology major. 00:10:21.62\00:10:22.95 Yes, it is. 00:10:22.98\00:10:24.45 And then our third track, which we brought in 00:10:24.49\00:10:27.69 when we came to the program with our background 00:10:27.72\00:10:29.92 in ADRA was a global community development track 00:10:29.96\00:10:33.03 where students are a bit more prepared 00:10:33.06\00:10:35.16 to work internationally or with an NGO of some kind. 00:10:35.20\00:10:38.67 It's a bit more focused on grant writing, 00:10:38.70\00:10:40.57 the same rescue classes like everybody else takes 00:10:40.64\00:10:42.54 but with more of a focus 00:10:42.57\00:10:44.81 on less medical and more on NGO management 00:10:44.84\00:10:48.81 and things like that 00:10:49.68\00:10:51.38 so they could work for ADRA, World Vision, 00:10:51.41\00:10:53.08 or an NGO in the US as well. 00:10:53.11\00:10:55.12 Wow. 00:10:55.15\00:10:56.48 Nice. Now tell us about Malawi. 00:10:56.52\00:10:59.35 How did that come about, you going to Malawi? 00:10:59.39\00:11:02.96 I know your father is in Malawi. 00:11:02.99\00:11:05.03 Your parents are in Malawi. 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.59 Were you raised in Malawi? 00:11:06.63\00:11:08.20 So I grew up in Nigeria for 10 years. 00:11:08.23\00:11:10.10 I went to high school in Kenya. 00:11:10.17\00:11:11.50 So I lived a total of 12 years in Africa. 00:11:11.53\00:11:12.87 But my parents are living in Malawi now 00:11:12.90\00:11:15.07 after I, you know, left them, 00:11:15.10\00:11:17.61 they moved to a different country. 00:11:17.64\00:11:20.38 So that gave us a connection for a place to go. 00:11:20.41\00:11:23.85 But Kalie is the overseas coordinator 00:11:23.88\00:11:25.25 for the program, 00:11:25.28\00:11:26.61 so she can tell you more about planning. 00:11:26.65\00:11:27.98 Okay. Yeah. 00:11:28.02\00:11:29.35 So for the four-year bachelors of science degree 00:11:29.38\00:11:32.45 that International Rescue and Relief is, 00:11:32.49\00:11:35.26 there's two exciting parts. 00:11:35.29\00:11:37.89 So what Andrew was explaining about the rescue 00:11:37.93\00:11:40.60 and like the technical rescue and stuff like that is taught 00:11:40.63\00:11:43.37 immediately following their freshman year, 00:11:43.40\00:11:45.20 once they have their EMT certification, 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.97 then they jump right into all the rescue classes. 00:11:48.00\00:11:50.71 But we hold off a little bit on the mission service 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.48 until they can have a little bit more training 00:11:53.51\00:11:55.31 in cultural diversity and like the social dimensions 00:11:55.34\00:11:58.75 that are behind potential disasters 00:11:58.78\00:12:02.42 and just what it's like maybe to expose them more 00:12:02.45\00:12:06.35 to people of other cultures and that level of diversity. 00:12:06.39\00:12:10.36 So we give them lots of classes. 00:12:10.86\00:12:13.09 And then their final semester of college 00:12:13.13\00:12:15.60 is when we do an overseas semester. 00:12:15.63\00:12:18.63 So Andrew and I, we were students. 00:12:18.67\00:12:21.07 And when we were students, 00:12:21.10\00:12:22.44 we went for our CS semester to Nicaragua. 00:12:22.47\00:12:25.47 And the program had been going to Nicaragua 00:12:25.51\00:12:27.78 for about 10 years. 00:12:27.81\00:12:29.54 When we came back as professors, 00:12:29.58\00:12:31.78 we led two semesters down to Nicaragua. 00:12:31.81\00:12:35.78 And Nicaragua, you know, 00:12:36.45\00:12:37.92 we have really great connections, 00:12:37.95\00:12:39.99 really great people, 00:12:40.06\00:12:41.52 fantastic doctors that we work with, 00:12:41.56\00:12:44.03 fantastic firefighters that we work with, 00:12:44.06\00:12:46.70 like all of these amazing people. 00:12:46.73\00:12:48.53 However, their government is a little unstable right now. 00:12:48.56\00:12:52.53 And so they broke out into a little bit of... 00:12:55.07\00:12:57.41 not a civil war, 00:12:57.44\00:12:58.77 but there's a lot of unrest and rioting. 00:12:58.81\00:13:00.78 And so because of the safety factor, 00:13:00.81\00:13:02.88 we chose not to go back to Nicaragua this year, 00:13:02.91\00:13:05.01 which was really a hard decision 00:13:05.05\00:13:06.55 because we loved it so much. 00:13:06.58\00:13:09.02 But when we knew, okay, we can't go back to Nicaragua, 00:13:09.05\00:13:11.69 this is a very logistics heavy semester. 00:13:11.72\00:13:15.16 You can't just take, you know, 00:13:15.19\00:13:17.13 16-20 students to a country and show up, 00:13:17.16\00:13:20.40 like, there's a lot of preparation, 00:13:20.43\00:13:21.93 a lot of planning, a lot of ground 00:13:21.96\00:13:23.87 that has to be paved first. 00:13:23.90\00:13:25.77 So when we knew we couldn't go back to Nicaragua, 00:13:25.80\00:13:29.77 you know, we were all praying about it, 00:13:30.74\00:13:32.07 trying to decide 00:13:32.11\00:13:33.48 where's the best place for us to go. 00:13:33.51\00:13:35.94 And it turns out that Andrew's family, 00:13:35.98\00:13:38.88 his parents are working in Malawi, 00:13:38.91\00:13:42.55 and so they said, "Well, we can help." 00:13:42.58\00:13:45.69 So we went just for a scouting trip 00:13:45.72\00:13:48.16 for a week during the summer. 00:13:48.19\00:13:50.26 And during that week... that week trip, 00:13:50.33\00:13:53.63 we could take a whole hour just telling you 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.36 about all the miracles that happened 00:13:55.40\00:13:56.77 in that one week alone, 00:13:56.80\00:13:58.77 just that God made it very clear 00:13:58.80\00:14:01.17 beyond the shadow of a doubt 00:14:01.20\00:14:02.54 that this is where he wanted us to go, 00:14:02.57\00:14:03.94 that He opened the doors, we met all the right people. 00:14:04.01\00:14:06.51 Oh. Even on the airplane, huh? 00:14:06.54\00:14:08.11 Yes. 00:14:08.14\00:14:09.48 Even on the airplane coming home, 00:14:09.51\00:14:10.88 we sat next to the right people. 00:14:10.95\00:14:12.48 So it's very clear God wanted us to go there. 00:14:12.51\00:14:15.18 That's right. 00:14:15.22\00:14:16.55 So we went forward with that plan. 00:14:16.58\00:14:18.22 And for the whole fall semester, 00:14:18.25\00:14:20.19 like we were both teaching classes 00:14:20.26\00:14:21.59 in the fall semester. 00:14:21.62\00:14:22.96 But on top of that, 00:14:22.99\00:14:24.33 we were also in contact with everybody in Malawi 00:14:24.36\00:14:27.13 and trying to work out the logistics of transportation 00:14:27.20\00:14:30.57 and where we're going to stay. 00:14:30.60\00:14:32.57 We wrote up... Where we're going to work. 00:14:32.60\00:14:34.40 Yeah, we wrote up work agreements 00:14:34.44\00:14:35.77 with several different organizations. 00:14:35.80\00:14:38.64 So we worked with the Adventist health services, 00:14:38.67\00:14:41.51 we worked with... 00:14:41.54\00:14:42.88 Adventist University. 00:14:42.91\00:14:44.25 Yeah, the Adventist University there in Malawi. 00:14:44.28\00:14:46.58 We worked with the UNHCR, 00:14:46.61\00:14:49.15 which is the High Commissioner for Refugees from the UN. 00:14:49.18\00:14:53.12 There's a refugee camp there that we were able to work in. 00:14:53.99\00:14:55.86 Wow. A huge camp. 00:14:55.89\00:14:57.63 Yeah, a very large camp. 00:14:57.66\00:14:58.99 So we were able to make all of these connections 00:14:59.03\00:15:01.63 in the summer, 00:15:01.66\00:15:03.00 and then I spent that fall planning 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.37 exactly when and where we would be in each place. 00:15:04.40\00:15:07.64 And then we were able to actually make it happen. 00:15:07.67\00:15:10.71 And we spent our first semester abroad in Malawi, 00:15:10.74\00:15:14.01 just in this last year. 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.94 We? How many is we? 00:15:15.98\00:15:17.71 So, Andrew and myself were the only staff that went. 00:15:17.75\00:15:21.72 This year, we had 14 students. 00:15:21.78\00:15:24.29 It varies depending on the year, of course, 00:15:24.32\00:15:25.95 our first year, leading the group, 00:15:25.99\00:15:27.86 it was 20, 21. 00:15:27.89\00:15:30.83 Yep, so that was big. 00:15:30.86\00:15:32.19 The next year was 8, 00:15:32.23\00:15:33.60 and then this year, it was 14, so it varies. 00:15:33.63\00:15:35.30 Yeah. 00:15:35.33\00:15:36.67 Now when you think about all those 14 going, 00:15:36.70\00:15:38.83 do you tend to have more guys than girls 00:15:38.87\00:15:41.54 or it's pretty even? 00:15:41.57\00:15:44.01 It's been pretty even. 00:15:44.04\00:15:46.17 It's pretty even, 00:15:46.21\00:15:47.58 sometimes there'll be a little bit of variation. 00:15:47.61\00:15:49.38 But for the most part, 00:15:49.41\00:15:50.95 for even the summer program after their freshman year 00:15:50.98\00:15:53.92 and then again for the overseas semester, 00:15:53.95\00:15:56.28 it's pretty much split down the middle. 00:15:56.32\00:15:57.75 Yeah, plus or minus one or two. 00:15:57.79\00:16:00.16 And when you think about the things that you do, 00:16:00.19\00:16:01.79 I mean, International Relief and Rescue, 00:16:01.82\00:16:03.83 we've been talking about this in preparation for the program, 00:16:03.86\00:16:07.80 it's paramount to I'm going to really strip... 00:16:08.50\00:16:12.50 It's paramount to you are on the lines 00:16:13.13\00:16:16.14 to help others, 00:16:16.17\00:16:17.77 but you have such survival skills 00:16:17.81\00:16:20.71 'cause I asked, I said, "Well, when you train people, 00:16:20.78\00:16:23.21 do you send them out with a flashlight?" 00:16:23.24\00:16:25.58 No. 00:16:25.61\00:16:26.95 "Do they have any digital devices?" 00:16:27.02\00:16:29.08 No. Any tents? 00:16:29.12\00:16:30.49 Any tents? But there is a... 00:16:30.52\00:16:31.85 Tell me about that. 00:16:31.89\00:16:33.22 I mean, just kind of familiarize 00:16:33.25\00:16:34.79 our audience with that. 00:16:34.82\00:16:36.16 Because there's an emergency kit they have. 00:16:36.19\00:16:38.13 But when you're training these young people 00:16:38.16\00:16:40.10 to kind of walk us through that Colorado scenario, 00:16:40.13\00:16:43.06 I think that was very interesting 00:16:43.10\00:16:44.43 when you dive back into Malawi. 00:16:44.47\00:16:46.23 Okay, so, like, you know, I'll talk about that then? 00:16:46.27\00:16:50.01 So that's the part that I plan 00:16:50.04\00:16:51.61 is the Summer Intensive session. 00:16:51.64\00:16:54.54 And that's a lot of fun. 00:16:54.58\00:16:56.48 I love the international work, 00:16:56.51\00:16:57.85 and that's what I grew up doing, 00:16:57.88\00:16:59.21 and I'm passionate about that. 00:16:59.25\00:17:00.62 But I think the summer portion may be more fun. 00:17:00.65\00:17:03.79 So the first week of the five weeks 00:17:04.79\00:17:07.56 that we do out in Southwest Colorado, 00:17:07.59\00:17:09.69 in the four corners area, is survival. 00:17:09.72\00:17:12.76 We're at 8,000 feet. 00:17:12.79\00:17:14.56 It's a beautiful ranch 00:17:14.60\00:17:15.93 that we partner with another Adventist group 00:17:15.96\00:17:19.37 that has a summer camp out there, 00:17:19.40\00:17:20.74 and they have 1,400 acres that they let us use. 00:17:20.77\00:17:23.81 So it's a beautiful big piece of land. 00:17:23.84\00:17:27.51 And it gives us a lot of space to be able to use and train, 00:17:27.58\00:17:30.55 they've got cliffs, valleys, creeks, 00:17:30.58\00:17:33.42 we're able to spread across this land and use it 00:17:33.45\00:17:35.42 for different training purposes. 00:17:35.45\00:17:37.62 So on that first week of survival, 00:17:37.65\00:17:40.69 we spend the first three days training the students 00:17:40.76\00:17:42.89 'cause we don't just put them out and say, 00:17:42.92\00:17:44.43 "Hey, figure it out." 00:17:44.46\00:17:45.79 We train them first. Good. 00:17:45.83\00:17:48.20 Then we teach them how to build shelters, 00:17:48.23\00:17:49.96 what plants are safe to eat, how to purify water, 00:17:50.00\00:17:53.47 how to build snares, how to find direction, 00:17:53.54\00:17:56.40 north, south, east, west, all that stuff. 00:17:56.44\00:18:00.41 We teach them how to do it over three days, 00:18:00.71\00:18:03.88 and then the next three days are solo. 00:18:03.95\00:18:06.31 We have this huge long canyon 00:18:06.35\00:18:07.68 with a creek running down the middle 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.05 and we spread them out every half mile. 00:18:09.08\00:18:12.02 And they have their own space that they work. 00:18:12.05\00:18:14.46 And for three days, 00:18:14.49\00:18:15.82 they're out there by themselves. 00:18:15.86\00:18:17.23 They have a list of tasks that they have to accomplish. 00:18:17.26\00:18:19.56 But a lot of it we try to put a very spiritual focus on. 00:18:19.59\00:18:23.57 And that gives them time to journal, to pray, 00:18:25.17\00:18:27.34 we encourage them to take their Bibles with them. 00:18:27.37\00:18:29.87 And most of them have never actually sat 00:18:29.90\00:18:31.87 for that amount of time to think about who am I, 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.68 what am I doing in my life, what do I want to do, 00:18:34.71\00:18:38.68 to listen to God and like to pray 00:18:38.98\00:18:40.82 for that amount of times. 00:18:40.85\00:18:42.35 I mean, so they come out 00:18:42.38\00:18:43.72 of the other side of that three days 00:18:43.79\00:18:45.89 much more confident 'cause, going in, 00:18:45.92\00:18:47.72 a lot of them think they can't do it. 00:18:47.76\00:18:49.42 But they come out feeling strong. 00:18:49.46\00:18:50.83 If I can do that, I can do anything. 00:18:50.86\00:18:52.19 That's right. Wow. 00:18:52.23\00:18:53.56 And then they also feel much closer to God, 00:18:53.60\00:18:54.93 much more confident, 00:18:54.96\00:18:56.30 and they're able to take on the next four weeks 00:18:56.33\00:18:58.80 feeling good about themselves. 00:18:58.83\00:19:00.17 Yeah. 00:19:00.24\00:19:01.57 That's something I think I'd like to try out, 00:19:01.60\00:19:02.94 but I might need a little bit of preconditioning. 00:19:02.97\00:19:04.31 I don't know. 00:19:04.34\00:19:05.67 And you teach them how to eat, 00:19:05.71\00:19:07.04 how to survive on various plants? 00:19:07.08\00:19:09.08 Yeah, it's very limited. 00:19:09.11\00:19:10.45 So they know what plants are safe to eat. 00:19:10.48\00:19:11.85 We teach them all the rules about, you know, 00:19:11.88\00:19:13.45 such as have edges, brushes around, 00:19:13.52\00:19:14.85 and which one is safe to eat 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.22 and aggregated fruits and that kind of stuff, 00:19:16.25\00:19:19.59 what's good and safe. 00:19:19.62\00:19:22.89 And then for the actual solo, they're only allowed 00:19:22.92\00:19:25.13 to take a very minimal amount of stuff with them. 00:19:25.16\00:19:27.00 So they have a knife, 00:19:27.03\00:19:28.36 a metal match, a water purifier, 00:19:28.40\00:19:30.30 whatever they're wearing for a day hike, 00:19:30.37\00:19:31.77 a small backpack, and some fishing line, 00:19:31.80\00:19:35.77 Para cord, snare wire, a few other things like that. 00:19:36.74\00:19:38.91 But it's very limited, 00:19:38.94\00:19:40.28 no flashlight like you were saying. 00:19:40.31\00:19:41.64 No flashlight. No tent. 00:19:41.68\00:19:43.85 They get extra credit for several things. 00:19:43.88\00:19:45.25 Like if they don't use their sleeping bag 00:19:45.28\00:19:46.92 and they build a shelter that's warm enough 00:19:46.95\00:19:48.85 without having to use a sleeping bag, 00:19:48.88\00:19:50.62 they get extra credit for that. 00:19:50.69\00:19:54.26 We do have safety protocols built in as well. 00:19:54.29\00:19:56.02 So they have to mark a trail 00:19:56.06\00:19:57.96 from where we drop them off to where their shelter is 00:19:57.99\00:20:00.60 so we can find them in case of emergency. 00:20:00.63\00:20:02.93 We give them radios and whistles in a black bag 00:20:02.96\00:20:05.40 that's sealed so they can break into that 00:20:05.43\00:20:06.94 and radio for help if they needed anything. 00:20:06.97\00:20:08.57 Critical situations. 00:20:08.60\00:20:10.21 Yeah. 00:20:10.24\00:20:11.84 We check on them every morning and night. 00:20:11.87\00:20:13.48 So we have a mailbox from where we drop them off. 00:20:13.51\00:20:17.05 Mailbox, you know, 00:20:17.08\00:20:18.41 it's just a little Tupperware container 00:20:18.45\00:20:19.78 and it's waterproof 00:20:19.81\00:20:21.15 and we leave flashcards in there, 00:20:21.18\00:20:22.75 and they'll just tell us, you know, 00:20:22.78\00:20:25.39 "I didn't sleep well last night," 00:20:25.42\00:20:26.76 or "I'm doing okay," or they just give us 00:20:26.79\00:20:28.12 a little update about how they're doing. 00:20:28.16\00:20:29.49 And we check on that every morning and night 00:20:29.52\00:20:30.93 just to see how they're doing, 00:20:30.96\00:20:32.29 but no verbal contact unless something is happening 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.60 that we need to pull them out for some reason. 00:20:34.63\00:20:36.33 That is really good because what that does 00:20:36.36\00:20:38.00 is that rips us away from the convenience, 00:20:38.03\00:20:39.97 "I don't have a spoon, 00:20:40.04\00:20:41.37 could somebody give me something to eat?" 00:20:41.40\00:20:42.87 Wow! 00:20:42.90\00:20:44.24 You know, "Where's the cereal?" 00:20:44.31\00:20:45.64 I'm... "It's right around you. 00:20:45.67\00:20:47.01 It's in the forest." Everywhere. 00:20:47.04\00:20:48.38 It is really interesting. 00:20:48.41\00:20:49.74 It's off the grid kind of training. 00:20:49.78\00:20:51.11 So you develop a mindset 00:20:51.15\00:20:54.05 that you begin to see in nature 00:20:54.12\00:20:55.58 and in situations that may be traumatic 00:20:55.62\00:20:58.22 to the person living in the city. 00:20:58.25\00:21:00.36 You may see, "Wow! 00:21:00.39\00:21:01.72 There's so much out here 00:21:01.76\00:21:03.09 we have access to in comparison." 00:21:03.12\00:21:04.99 And that's amazing. 00:21:05.03\00:21:06.36 You want to try it out, honey? 00:21:06.39\00:21:07.73 I don't know. 00:21:07.76\00:21:09.10 Actually would be interesting. 00:21:09.13\00:21:10.80 Well, I don't know. 00:21:10.87\00:21:12.20 Let's get back to Malawi. That's right. 00:21:12.23\00:21:14.77 'Cause we have... 00:21:14.80\00:21:16.14 Tell us more about that. 00:21:16.17\00:21:17.87 The miracles, there are some things 00:21:17.91\00:21:19.24 that happened in Malawi that we brought... 00:21:19.27\00:21:21.01 you have some videos and pictures, 00:21:21.04\00:21:22.64 maybe I think what we should do 00:21:22.68\00:21:24.05 is go to, maybe, some of the videos 00:21:24.08\00:21:25.58 and then we'll come back and dive 00:21:25.61\00:21:27.12 into the specifics of Malawi. 00:21:27.15\00:21:28.72 Maybe you could lead us into what we see 00:21:28.75\00:21:30.39 or let us know what we see afterwards. 00:21:30.42\00:21:32.65 Oh, if I could just give you a brief of what they expect, 00:21:32.69\00:21:36.36 we went there, obviously, like I said, 00:21:36.39\00:21:38.36 it's a semester abroad. 00:21:38.39\00:21:40.10 It's very service-oriented. It's all about service. 00:21:40.13\00:21:43.50 The students know that they're going there 00:21:43.57\00:21:46.47 to not necessarily get much out of it for themselves. 00:21:46.50\00:21:50.51 It's academic, of course, but it's service-oriented. 00:21:51.24\00:21:54.98 And we had a very tight schedule planned. 00:21:55.01\00:21:58.98 We had everything, you know, organized out, 00:22:01.62\00:22:03.92 everything that was supposed to happen 00:22:03.99\00:22:05.32 because from like my perspective, 00:22:05.35\00:22:07.36 from Andrew's perspective, 00:22:07.39\00:22:09.09 we have to make sure that they meet certain requirements 00:22:09.12\00:22:11.03 because everything is for letter grade, 00:22:11.06\00:22:14.60 and they have to be able to accomplish those skills 00:22:14.63\00:22:16.53 in order to graduate, right? 00:22:16.56\00:22:18.10 Right. 00:22:18.13\00:22:19.47 However, while we were there, near the very end 00:22:19.50\00:22:22.40 'cause we were there from January until April, 00:22:22.44\00:22:25.34 so near the very end of March, 00:22:25.37\00:22:27.51 we had our regularly scheduled programming, 00:22:27.58\00:22:30.78 if you will, and that we were going to... 00:22:30.85\00:22:33.25 When the cyclone, cyclone Ida came through 00:22:33.28\00:22:36.55 and devastated parts of Mozambique 00:22:36.58\00:22:39.02 and the southern portion of Malawi, 00:22:39.05\00:22:42.39 so when that hit, 00:22:42.42\00:22:45.26 the students were aware of the situation 00:22:45.29\00:22:48.56 and they knew this is actually something 00:22:48.60\00:22:50.37 that we're trained to be able to help with. 00:22:50.40\00:22:53.00 They've gone through all of the swift water rescue, 00:22:53.03\00:22:55.37 the technical rope rescue, 00:22:55.40\00:22:56.74 the survival, the flood management classes. 00:22:56.81\00:22:59.51 They know what it's like. 00:22:59.54\00:23:01.28 They know what they need to do in order to be able to respond. 00:23:01.31\00:23:04.31 Plus, we'd been there for almost three months 00:23:04.35\00:23:06.92 at this point doing medical clinics. 00:23:06.95\00:23:10.29 The majority of our time was for medical clinics. 00:23:10.32\00:23:13.36 And so they're, you know, very used to the routine. 00:23:13.39\00:23:17.23 And when this happened, everyone is thinking, 00:23:17.26\00:23:19.36 "Hmm, is there may be a chance that we could go and help? 00:23:19.39\00:23:23.37 'Cause we're here, like, we're trained, we're capable, 00:23:24.30\00:23:27.14 and we're not even that far away, 00:23:27.17\00:23:29.04 we're in the same country that needs the help." 00:23:29.07\00:23:30.94 Yes. 00:23:30.97\00:23:32.31 So we knew it was a great opportunity. 00:23:32.34\00:23:35.61 We didn't want to go against what we had already planned, 00:23:35.64\00:23:39.61 but we also wanted to be open to the leading of God. 00:23:40.22\00:23:42.92 And so we stopped and we prayed, 00:23:42.95\00:23:45.52 and we said, "God, you know, we already have our plans. 00:23:45.55\00:23:49.52 We already have this academic program 00:23:50.36\00:23:52.19 that we need to complete. 00:23:52.23\00:23:53.83 However, if it's your will, 00:23:53.90\00:23:56.97 if this is what you want us to do, 00:23:57.00\00:23:58.33 if you want us to stop what we're doing now and go 00:23:58.37\00:24:00.74 and respond to this disaster, 00:24:00.77\00:24:03.61 we need you to answer our prayer, 00:24:03.64\00:24:05.57 we need a fleece." 00:24:05.61\00:24:06.98 So we put our fleece down and we said, 00:24:07.01\00:24:09.34 if it's your will that we go, 00:24:09.38\00:24:11.01 we ask that we will have an official invitation 00:24:11.05\00:24:14.58 by an official organization like the Malawian government 00:24:14.62\00:24:18.45 or another NGO that was responding, 00:24:18.49\00:24:21.06 they would reach out to us and contact us 00:24:21.09\00:24:24.36 and ask us to go with them. 00:24:24.39\00:24:26.26 And it had to be that day 00:24:26.29\00:24:27.70 'cause we only had a week worth of time 00:24:27.73\00:24:30.10 that we could actually go and help. 00:24:30.17\00:24:31.57 So I said, 00:24:31.60\00:24:32.93 "God, if this is your will, it'll happen today." 00:24:32.97\00:24:36.10 So we prayed about it all day, 00:24:36.14\00:24:37.84 we went about our normal business 00:24:37.87\00:24:40.48 what we had planned already for the day. 00:24:40.51\00:24:42.54 Which was actually another huge honor 00:24:42.58\00:24:45.28 and kind of a God thing was 00:24:45.31\00:24:47.12 we were working at the United Nations 00:24:47.15\00:24:48.48 High Commissioner for Refugees refugee camp in Malawi, 00:24:48.52\00:24:51.79 which had over 30,000 refugees in it, 00:24:51.82\00:24:54.56 and a huge need there as well. 00:24:54.59\00:24:55.92 Yes. 00:24:55.96\00:24:57.53 And so we went to the camp 00:24:57.56\00:24:58.89 and met all the right people there. 00:24:58.93\00:25:00.30 It was kind of a God thing that they were all there 00:25:00.33\00:25:01.76 at the same time. 00:25:01.80\00:25:03.13 Yeah, it's true 'cause this is a... 00:25:03.16\00:25:04.77 You know, we had already known 00:25:04.80\00:25:06.13 that it was a possibility that we would respond. 00:25:06.17\00:25:08.77 And we were there at the camp, and the... 00:25:08.80\00:25:12.77 What was his position? 00:25:12.84\00:25:14.94 Gideon? Gideon's position. 00:25:14.98\00:25:16.58 He was the director of health and response 00:25:16.61\00:25:18.58 for all refugees in the country. 00:25:18.61\00:25:19.95 Yeah. 00:25:20.02\00:25:21.35 And we had met him a couple days earlier 00:25:21.38\00:25:22.72 and gotten to know him some. 00:25:22.75\00:25:24.29 And he just happened to come back that day, 00:25:24.32\00:25:26.96 and we're like, "Oh, well, okay. 00:25:26.99\00:25:30.53 Do you know, like, is there a need? 00:25:30.56\00:25:33.23 Does the government need anybody to come and help?" 00:25:33.26\00:25:36.67 And he said, "Hm, I think yes." 00:25:36.70\00:25:39.43 It's like I happen to know 00:25:39.47\00:25:40.84 the deputy director for the response. 00:25:40.87\00:25:42.70 Oh, my. 00:25:42.74\00:25:44.11 Let me give you his phone number. 00:25:44.14\00:25:45.47 Oh, my. 00:25:45.51\00:25:46.84 So you already see the pieces coming together. 00:25:46.88\00:25:48.21 I do. Yeah. 00:25:48.24\00:25:49.58 But you still have to get the invitation? 00:25:49.61\00:25:50.95 Right, right, exactly. 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.31 So Andrew had contacted them and explained 00:25:52.35\00:25:54.95 like the credentials that we had 00:25:54.98\00:25:56.42 and the experience that we had 00:25:56.45\00:25:58.79 and that we were willing and able to help. 00:25:58.82\00:26:01.36 And like I said, we were praying the whole day. 00:26:01.39\00:26:03.73 Dr. Kingsley was in the camp too that day. 00:26:03.76\00:26:06.70 Okay. Yeah. 00:26:06.73\00:26:08.06 So we actually were there and, you know, 00:26:08.10\00:26:10.37 praying about this and what to do. 00:26:10.40\00:26:11.73 And like we said, 00:26:11.77\00:26:13.10 the director of health for refugees 00:26:13.13\00:26:14.47 was in the camp that day. 00:26:14.50\00:26:17.34 And they introduced us to the deputy director 00:26:17.41\00:26:19.37 for the response to the cyclone from Malawi. 00:26:19.41\00:26:22.11 But also we were working for the United Nations 00:26:22.14\00:26:24.58 at this point. 00:26:24.61\00:26:25.95 And we had signed a memorandum of understanding with them 00:26:25.98\00:26:28.05 that we'd work in the camp, you know, X amount of days. 00:26:28.08\00:26:31.62 And the head of office for UNHCR 00:26:31.65\00:26:34.49 was in the camp that day 00:26:34.52\00:26:36.26 meeting with this other individual 00:26:36.29\00:26:38.29 that gave us the phone number. 00:26:38.33\00:26:39.83 And we had them both there at the same time. 00:26:39.86\00:26:41.60 "Yes, there's a need. 00:26:41.63\00:26:42.96 I'll connect you with the right person." 00:26:43.00\00:26:44.33 And Dr. Kingsley, the director of UNHCR, 00:26:44.37\00:26:47.27 the country director said 00:26:47.34\00:26:48.84 "Yes, I realized there's a need, 00:26:48.87\00:26:51.14 you can leave your memorandum of understanding early 00:26:51.17\00:26:53.51 and go to the response." 00:26:53.58\00:26:55.01 So we released and allowed to go 00:26:55.04\00:26:56.41 and we were given the context on how to get there. 00:26:56.44\00:27:02.68 But still no invitation. 00:27:02.72\00:27:04.09 But still, right, you need that. 00:27:04.12\00:27:05.45 Yeah. 00:27:05.49\00:27:06.82 But, like, the steps were being laid, 00:27:06.86\00:27:08.76 and we went through the entire day, 00:27:08.79\00:27:11.93 still had heard nothing. 00:27:11.96\00:27:14.33 We were kind of starting to wonder, 00:27:14.36\00:27:16.43 "Maybe this isn't God's will." 00:27:16.46\00:27:17.80 You know, it was late at night. 00:27:17.83\00:27:19.63 We were getting ready for bed actually. 00:27:19.67\00:27:23.27 And I think we might have actually 00:27:23.30\00:27:24.64 even just like said goodnight 00:27:24.67\00:27:26.01 and we were already, like, just done for the day. 00:27:26.04\00:27:27.84 And we had actually just sat down 00:27:27.88\00:27:29.71 and Andrew looked at me and he's like, 00:27:29.74\00:27:31.78 "Well, maybe it's not God's will. 00:27:31.81\00:27:33.45 Maybe we're not supposed to respond." 00:27:33.52\00:27:35.95 And this was at like, 11:00, 11:30 at night. 00:27:35.98\00:27:38.99 And he just, you know, 00:27:39.02\00:27:40.66 picked his phone up to plug it in 00:27:40.69\00:27:42.32 and saw that there was an email 00:27:42.36\00:27:44.46 sitting there in his inbox at 11:30 at night 00:27:44.49\00:27:47.10 from the Malawian... 00:27:47.13\00:27:49.83 Deputy director of response. 00:27:49.86\00:27:51.20 Yeah, asking us to please come. 00:27:51.23\00:27:52.77 Look at that. 00:27:52.80\00:27:54.40 So when you see the response come through, 00:27:54.44\00:27:56.44 you know, God is obviously saying, 00:27:56.47\00:27:58.51 "This is what I want you to do." 00:27:58.54\00:27:59.87 And it changes your whole perspective. 00:27:59.91\00:28:02.04 So the Lord is now taking over 00:28:02.08\00:28:03.58 and we're gonna follow into His mission. 00:28:03.65\00:28:05.35 And you brought some pictures and some videos with you 00:28:05.38\00:28:07.98 to kind of walk us through that. 00:28:08.02\00:28:09.35 We'll go to the pictures first and you tell us what we see. 00:28:09.38\00:28:11.72 Sure. 00:28:11.75\00:28:13.09 So this here is a picture of our team. 00:28:13.12\00:28:15.59 You can see the blue T-shirts 00:28:15.62\00:28:17.99 with our IR logo over their shoulder. 00:28:18.03\00:28:21.33 The people in uniform 00:28:21.36\00:28:23.00 are actually the Malawi Defense Force 00:28:23.03\00:28:25.63 as well as the South African Defense Force. 00:28:25.67\00:28:28.14 South Africa actually came up with a helicopter and medics 00:28:28.17\00:28:31.74 to help provide medical relief for Malawi. 00:28:31.77\00:28:35.41 And supplies too, food, water, bedding. 00:28:35.44\00:28:37.98 This is us packing, 00:28:38.01\00:28:39.35 trying to get ready for the morning 00:28:39.38\00:28:41.62 because the roads, 00:28:41.65\00:28:44.09 everything was just completely flooded 00:28:44.12\00:28:45.82 and washed out. 00:28:45.85\00:28:47.19 And so the only way for us to access these clinics 00:28:47.26\00:28:50.53 was by helicopter. 00:28:50.56\00:28:52.53 So the South African military actually flew us in 00:28:52.56\00:28:56.53 via helicopter over the flooding. 00:28:57.17\00:28:59.87 We only had so many pounds we could take on with us. 00:28:59.90\00:29:03.91 So we know we're going to be seeing hundreds of patients, 00:29:04.64\00:29:07.91 but we only have X amount of medications 00:29:07.94\00:29:11.38 that we can actually take with us. 00:29:11.41\00:29:12.78 So we had to pack very strategically. 00:29:12.81\00:29:15.75 And this is us landing on our first mission 00:29:15.78\00:29:18.45 with the South African Defense Force. 00:29:18.49\00:29:20.66 You can see the people just waiting. 00:29:20.69\00:29:22.59 They heard the helicopter coming 00:29:22.62\00:29:24.06 from long ways off. 00:29:24.13\00:29:25.49 That's me there in the in the Rescue and Relief shirt. 00:29:25.53\00:29:28.26 And they heard us coming and they knew it was help. 00:29:28.30\00:29:32.13 And these are people that 00:29:32.17\00:29:33.54 actually the rainy season was happening. 00:29:33.57\00:29:37.31 Yeah, here you can see they're clapping. 00:29:37.71\00:29:39.34 Beautiful. They're happy to see you. 00:29:39.37\00:29:41.78 Yes. Oh. 00:29:41.81\00:29:44.25 They're glad that some help has come. 00:29:44.28\00:29:47.52 When you get to that kind of setting, 00:29:47.55\00:29:50.59 how do you just you just kick into gear. 00:29:50.62\00:29:53.05 I mean, tell me what do you do 00:29:53.09\00:29:54.49 when you just land and what happens next? 00:29:54.52\00:29:58.03 Well, thankfully, we had been doing 00:29:58.06\00:30:00.33 three months of medical clinics, 00:30:00.40\00:30:01.86 leading up to this point. 00:30:01.90\00:30:03.60 So the students that we took with us, 00:30:03.67\00:30:05.40 they were well trained, they knew exactly their roles, 00:30:05.43\00:30:08.10 they knew exactly what to do, 00:30:08.14\00:30:09.47 and they knew how to do it very well. 00:30:09.50\00:30:11.67 And so as soon as we would land, 00:30:11.71\00:30:13.48 we'd carry our gear off the aircraft, 00:30:13.51\00:30:16.51 and usually, we would meet with the village chief, 00:30:16.54\00:30:19.35 and they would direct us 00:30:19.38\00:30:20.75 to a building that we could use. 00:30:20.82\00:30:23.05 So there's no standard clinic building in each village. 00:30:23.08\00:30:28.49 So it's whatever they have to offer. 00:30:28.52\00:30:30.33 Sometimes it was one classroom from their school. 00:30:30.36\00:30:33.60 Sometimes it was a church. 00:30:33.63\00:30:35.80 Sometimes they did have a clinic facility, 00:30:35.83\00:30:37.93 but they had no clinicians or medications. 00:30:37.97\00:30:41.00 And so they would let us use the empty building. 00:30:41.04\00:30:43.54 It really would just depend. 00:30:43.61\00:30:45.94 And so as soon as we would land, 00:30:45.97\00:30:47.88 we'd carry our gear out and the students knew exactly. 00:30:47.91\00:30:51.88 Andrew had them writing up all of the FEMA documents, 00:30:52.48\00:30:56.48 basically, you can explain it 00:30:56.89\00:30:58.22 so the students knew their role each day. 00:30:58.25\00:31:01.36 Yeah. 00:31:01.39\00:31:02.72 So while Kalie was out 00:31:02.76\00:31:04.73 managing the clinics and everything, 00:31:04.76\00:31:06.09 I was the one staying back in the capital 00:31:06.13\00:31:09.23 or in the base of operations, working with the other players, 00:31:09.26\00:31:12.93 so the Malawi Defense Force commanders 00:31:12.97\00:31:14.87 and the South African Defense Force commanders 00:31:14.90\00:31:18.07 and planning for the next day and where we go the next day, 00:31:18.11\00:31:21.94 and like who would do what, and that kind of stuff, 00:31:21.98\00:31:23.78 and we would take, like we said, 00:31:23.85\00:31:25.65 we train all of our students 00:31:25.68\00:31:27.02 in the incident command structure 00:31:27.05\00:31:28.38 from the same system 00:31:28.42\00:31:29.75 that we use across the US with FEMA. 00:31:29.78\00:31:32.15 And we use all the same forms. 00:31:32.19\00:31:33.86 We had our emergency operation planner 00:31:33.89\00:31:37.33 for the whole response. 00:31:37.36\00:31:38.69 And then every day, we'd write a new incident action plan, 00:31:38.73\00:31:40.60 so what we were doing for that operational period. 00:31:40.63\00:31:43.20 And everybody had their work assignment 00:31:43.23\00:31:44.57 and knew exactly what their role was. 00:31:44.60\00:31:46.10 So as soon as we got on ground, 00:31:46.13\00:31:47.90 everybody knew exactly what they were supposed to do 00:31:47.94\00:31:50.24 and what was expected of them, so... 00:31:50.31\00:31:52.54 We were totally like self-sufficient, 00:31:52.57\00:31:55.88 basically, clinic. 00:31:55.91\00:31:57.68 So we had our own intake. 00:31:57.71\00:31:59.08 We had students working triage 00:31:59.11\00:32:00.45 where they would get everybody's vitals 00:32:00.52\00:32:01.95 and chief complaints. 00:32:01.98\00:32:03.32 We could determine who was the most sick. 00:32:03.39\00:32:06.79 And so if there was somebody that had a dire need, 00:32:06.86\00:32:10.63 we could get them to the front of the line 00:32:10.66\00:32:12.13 to see a doctor immediately. 00:32:12.16\00:32:13.50 This here, this picture is them in triage. 00:32:13.53\00:32:15.60 You can see the line forming behind them. 00:32:15.63\00:32:17.37 Long line. Yes. 00:32:17.40\00:32:19.30 So we had triage, 00:32:19.33\00:32:20.67 we had students working, seeing patients. 00:32:20.74\00:32:24.64 At this point, like I said, they had seen hundreds, 00:32:24.67\00:32:27.11 they'd seen thousands of patients 00:32:27.18\00:32:28.51 by the time we were done with the semester. 00:32:28.54\00:32:31.01 Here is our lab, actually. 00:32:31.05\00:32:32.55 We could test blood, we could test for malaria, 00:32:32.58\00:32:36.82 we could test, you know, urine 00:32:36.89\00:32:39.65 to see if they had infections or anything like that 00:32:39.69\00:32:42.26 so we would know better medications to prescribe. 00:32:42.29\00:32:46.53 Here's just more intake seeing patients. 00:32:46.56\00:32:51.20 So we had providers as well. 00:32:51.23\00:32:53.74 We did hire Malawian doctors to come with us 00:32:53.77\00:32:56.81 to oversee everything 'cause we're not doctors. 00:32:56.84\00:32:59.67 So we're just making sure 00:32:59.71\00:33:01.04 that the standard of care we were providing 00:33:01.08\00:33:03.45 was as high as possible. 00:33:03.48\00:33:04.95 The doctors signed off on everything we did. 00:33:04.98\00:33:07.52 And then of course, 00:33:07.55\00:33:08.88 they'd end with medications from our pharmacy. 00:33:08.92\00:33:11.32 This picture I'd like to stop on for one second. 00:33:11.35\00:33:14.06 This is an internally displaced camp. 00:33:14.09\00:33:17.43 You can see here this is... 00:33:17.46\00:33:18.83 These are people from many, many villages 00:33:18.86\00:33:21.90 that have lost everything. 00:33:21.93\00:33:23.87 Their homes have been washed away, 00:33:23.90\00:33:25.30 their crops have been ruined. 00:33:25.33\00:33:27.14 They've most likely lost all of their possessions 00:33:27.17\00:33:28.97 except for what they could carry. 00:33:29.00\00:33:31.34 And you can see, this was lunchtime, 00:33:31.37\00:33:34.58 so the women are just. 00:33:34.61\00:33:36.08 They have claimed stake 00:33:36.11\00:33:37.45 on this one section of concrete. 00:33:37.48\00:33:38.95 They're starting to cook lunch. 00:33:38.98\00:33:41.38 You can see behind them the many, many sheds. 00:33:41.42\00:33:44.79 Pavilions. 00:33:44.82\00:33:46.15 Pavilions, yeah, they're massive, 00:33:46.19\00:33:48.42 with hundreds of people in each. 00:33:48.46\00:33:50.26 And that's all they have to their name at this point. 00:33:50.33\00:33:53.50 In this camp, 00:33:53.53\00:33:55.06 they had 30 different camps across the country... 00:33:55.10\00:33:57.07 yeah, across the affected area 00:33:57.10\00:33:58.43 and that camp specifically was one of the bigger ones. 00:33:58.63\00:34:01.27 They had about 13,000 people in that camp. 00:34:01.30\00:34:03.94 That many? 00:34:04.01\00:34:05.34 What were the needs? 00:34:05.37\00:34:07.01 Everything. Everything? 00:34:07.08\00:34:08.41 Yeah. Food, water, bug nets. 00:34:08.44\00:34:10.48 I mean, 'cause imagine the floodwaters rising 00:34:10.55\00:34:12.78 and you can just take with you what you can carry, 00:34:12.81\00:34:15.98 you know, so they lost their clothes, 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.59 their schoolbooks, their... 00:34:17.62\00:34:19.49 You know, everything, they lost. 00:34:19.52\00:34:22.26 Yeah. Yeah. Terrible. 00:34:22.29\00:34:24.23 Some of the miracle stories that happen out of this 00:34:24.26\00:34:25.99 because I know that when you go on a mission for the Lord, 00:34:26.03\00:34:29.43 He's not just going to send you and say, 00:34:29.46\00:34:30.80 "Well, hey, handle it, you're trained." 00:34:30.87\00:34:33.44 The Lord often moves mountains 00:34:33.47\00:34:36.74 to make what we think is very, very difficult, 00:34:36.81\00:34:39.77 obvious that he's involved in the mix. 00:34:39.81\00:34:41.54 What are some of the things you experienced 00:34:41.58\00:34:43.65 when you're out on the service, 00:34:43.68\00:34:45.61 serving these individuals that, you know, 00:34:45.65\00:34:47.05 "Hey, this is a God thing. 00:34:47.12\00:34:48.45 He's working in here. 00:34:48.48\00:34:50.69 He's moving in our behalf." 00:34:50.72\00:34:53.02 I think in addition 00:34:53.05\00:34:55.19 to obviously Him calling us to go as we specifically asked, 00:34:55.22\00:35:01.06 We also had the issue of funding it, 00:35:01.10\00:35:03.67 because we had to be able to buy all of the medications 00:35:03.70\00:35:07.04 for our very own pharmacy. 00:35:07.07\00:35:08.77 We had to be able to buy food and water and things like that 00:35:08.80\00:35:12.44 for our staff just so that we can feed them 00:35:12.47\00:35:15.41 and make sure that they we're staying healthy as well. 00:35:15.44\00:35:17.98 Like here we said, we were totally self-contained. 00:35:18.01\00:35:20.22 We had our own physicians, we had our own team, 00:35:20.25\00:35:22.08 we had our own food, water, shelter, transportation, 00:35:22.12\00:35:26.12 as far as vehicles and everything. 00:35:26.15\00:35:27.99 So we had to be that self-contained unit 00:35:28.02\00:35:29.82 so that we weren't a burden 00:35:29.86\00:35:31.19 on anybody else in the response. 00:35:31.23\00:35:32.96 Because there's already short supply 00:35:32.99\00:35:34.33 we don't want to add to that. 00:35:34.36\00:35:35.70 Yeah, and at this point, 00:35:35.73\00:35:37.07 it was near the end of the semester, 00:35:37.10\00:35:38.43 our like, funds had been drained. 00:35:38.47\00:35:40.84 We had just enough to finish out 00:35:40.87\00:35:42.47 the last couple of weeks as planned 00:35:42.50\00:35:44.21 not to fund a huge response effort. 00:35:44.24\00:35:47.28 So the day after we got the call 00:35:47.31\00:35:49.78 at 11:30 at night saying, please come, 00:35:49.81\00:35:51.55 we told the students the next morning 00:35:51.58\00:35:53.21 and we said to them, like, 00:35:53.25\00:35:55.02 obviously, you know, "This is God's will, 00:35:55.05\00:35:56.55 He's asked us to go, He's called us to go, 00:35:56.58\00:35:59.19 and He's not gonna let us down now, 00:35:59.22\00:36:01.49 but we need you to pray for money. 00:36:01.52\00:36:04.36 We need you to pray for funds because we can't afford this. 00:36:04.39\00:36:07.70 So the students, they all started praying as well. 00:36:07.73\00:36:11.70 They went about their day as usual too 00:36:11.73\00:36:13.97 because there's very little we could do in preparation 00:36:14.04\00:36:16.30 without some money coming in. 00:36:16.34\00:36:18.81 But by early afternoon, 00:36:18.84\00:36:24.18 we went from absolutely no money for this response 00:36:24.25\00:36:27.42 to having $13,000 dispatched 00:36:27.45\00:36:30.19 in response in a matter of hours. 00:36:30.22\00:36:32.22 And mind you, 00:36:32.25\00:36:33.59 this is the middle of the day Malawi, 00:36:33.66\00:36:35.52 which is the middle of the night US 00:36:35.56\00:36:37.53 where all their friends and family are. 00:36:37.56\00:36:39.46 How did you raise the funds? 00:36:39.49\00:36:41.10 Sorry? How did you raise the funds? 00:36:41.13\00:36:43.10 It was generous friends and family of our students. 00:36:43.13\00:36:46.17 Oh, what a blessing! Look at that. 00:36:46.20\00:36:47.77 Then we put a call out as well to some of our previous donors. 00:36:47.80\00:36:51.34 So one that was very gracious 00:36:51.37\00:36:53.51 and worked with us in a previous response, 00:36:53.58\00:36:54.91 this is not the first response we've gone to, 00:36:54.94\00:36:56.28 we've also been to, you know, Haiti. 00:36:56.31\00:36:59.55 Ike, Sandy. 00:36:59.58\00:37:01.45 Harvey in Texas, you know, 00:37:01.48\00:37:02.82 we've gone to several in the past, so... 00:37:02.85\00:37:04.42 So not just overseas but also some in the country, 00:37:04.45\00:37:07.99 rescue situations, you mentioned Texas. 00:37:08.02\00:37:10.63 Yeah. 00:37:10.66\00:37:11.99 We led the team down to Texas a couple years ago as well. 00:37:12.03\00:37:15.20 That was a big response as well. 00:37:15.23\00:37:16.77 So we reached out to some of those same donors 00:37:16.80\00:37:18.37 who had helped us in the past. 00:37:18.40\00:37:19.97 Brother's Brother being one of them. 00:37:20.04\00:37:21.37 They're a great NGO that works overseas as well. 00:37:21.40\00:37:24.61 They gave us some funding. 00:37:24.64\00:37:25.97 We had some people from California, 00:37:26.01\00:37:27.91 the Napa Valley Association gave us some funding as well. 00:37:27.94\00:37:31.78 Different family members. 00:37:31.81\00:37:33.15 Yeah. 00:37:33.18\00:37:34.78 It was amazing to see the generosity 00:37:34.82\00:37:36.28 that came to us with that. 00:37:36.32\00:37:37.89 So literally within hours of our first miracle, 00:37:37.92\00:37:41.26 we had our second miracle 00:37:41.29\00:37:42.62 where we'd actually raised more money 00:37:42.66\00:37:44.59 than we even thought we would need. 00:37:44.63\00:37:46.56 We had estimated we would need about 10,000 00:37:46.59\00:37:48.76 and 13,000 had been pledged right off the bat. 00:37:48.80\00:37:52.33 So that was definitely just, 00:37:52.37\00:37:54.14 you know, we already knew that it was God's will 00:37:54.17\00:37:56.37 but if there was any doubt 00:37:56.40\00:37:57.74 in any of our minds, any of the students' minds 00:37:57.77\00:38:00.11 there was no way they could wonder anymore. 00:38:00.18\00:38:01.71 Now what would money provide? 00:38:01.74\00:38:03.55 What would that might be used for? 00:38:03.58\00:38:06.05 So it was for every single step of the operation. 00:38:06.08\00:38:09.25 So we hired vehicles, 00:38:09.28\00:38:11.32 as we needed to be able to transport ourselves 00:38:11.35\00:38:13.05 back down to the south. 00:38:13.09\00:38:14.99 It was what funded our pharmacy, 00:38:15.02\00:38:19.26 so we were able to purchase medications, 00:38:19.29\00:38:22.30 the lab equipment that we needed, 00:38:22.33\00:38:25.30 things like that. 00:38:25.33\00:38:26.67 Medications are expensive, 00:38:26.74\00:38:28.07 that's where the majority of the money went 00:38:28.10\00:38:29.44 was to the pharmacy. 00:38:29.47\00:38:30.81 Yes, they're very, very, very expensive. 00:38:30.84\00:38:32.67 But we were able to actually get discounts 00:38:32.71\00:38:34.74 even for that, which was another miracle 00:38:34.78\00:38:37.05 that God provided our money went further. 00:38:37.08\00:38:38.81 Having worked with the Adventist Health System 00:38:38.85\00:38:40.22 for the last few months, 00:38:40.25\00:38:42.28 we were actually basing out of the hospital 00:38:42.32\00:38:43.69 where my parents were working at the time, 00:38:43.72\00:38:45.15 or are still working, we were with them at the time. 00:38:45.19\00:38:48.26 And the business manager there said, 00:38:48.29\00:38:50.83 "Hey, you can use our pharmacy number 00:38:50.86\00:38:52.56 and buy the drugs at wholesale instead of retail." 00:38:52.59\00:38:55.63 Wow. 00:38:55.66\00:38:57.00 So that's saved us a huge amount of money, 00:38:57.07\00:38:58.60 we were able to make it go much farther. 00:38:58.63\00:39:00.14 Yup. 00:39:00.17\00:39:01.50 Now the reason I asked that question 00:39:01.54\00:39:02.87 is because first you have to get the invitation, 00:39:02.90\00:39:05.81 the Lord opened that door late in the midnight hour. 00:39:05.84\00:39:10.05 And then, "Okay, we got the invitation 00:39:10.08\00:39:11.75 but what are we gonna use?" 00:39:11.78\00:39:14.55 And that's where the funds came in. 00:39:14.58\00:39:16.28 We're glad to go now 00:39:16.32\00:39:17.65 but Lord, what are we gonna use to help this relief effort? 00:39:17.69\00:39:20.56 We know there's gonna be a lot of need food, clothing, water, 00:39:20.59\00:39:24.56 but then the supplies, the medicine, the triage, 00:39:24.59\00:39:26.56 that you're gonna carry on. 00:39:26.59\00:39:28.83 The reason I'm saying is because we... 00:39:28.86\00:39:30.20 Remember, we did a triage in the jungles of Zimbabwe. 00:39:30.27\00:39:32.80 With Maranatha, yeah. 00:39:32.83\00:39:34.97 Yeah, we went out there. 00:39:35.00\00:39:36.34 You almost had a chance to pull somebody's teeth. 00:39:36.37\00:39:37.94 Yeah, was supposed to pull someone's tooth, 00:39:37.97\00:39:40.08 then they said we got to go, I was so happy. 00:39:40.11\00:39:42.51 Said we got to go now and so I was... 00:39:42.54\00:39:44.35 They were showing me, 00:39:44.38\00:39:45.71 they said, we'd like you to pull a tooth 00:39:45.75\00:39:47.12 and, you know, the dental guy was there. 00:39:47.15\00:39:48.88 He was there, he already numbed and everything needed, 00:39:48.92\00:39:50.32 showed her how to do it. 00:39:50.39\00:39:51.72 And he was training on the spot. 00:39:51.75\00:39:53.09 He said, "Would you like to pull a tooth?" 00:39:53.12\00:39:54.72 "Okay." 00:39:54.76\00:39:58.03 I was rescued at the last minute. 00:39:58.06\00:39:59.56 Well, we need to go. 00:39:59.59\00:40:02.03 But the triage idea 00:40:02.06\00:40:03.40 in a situation like this in Africa, 00:40:03.47\00:40:05.33 you know, there's some very, very developed parts of Africa. 00:40:05.37\00:40:07.47 But then when you go into these underdeveloped areas... 00:40:07.54\00:40:10.54 Post disaster. 00:40:10.61\00:40:12.01 Post disaster, that's the other aspect of it. 00:40:12.21\00:40:14.11 It's not only, you know, homes that are built 00:40:14.18\00:40:15.98 out of some of the most basic elements 00:40:16.01\00:40:18.28 that are available, but then all of a sudden 00:40:18.31\00:40:20.12 a flood or a tornado, or in this case a cyclone, 00:40:20.15\00:40:23.05 which is a tornado in America, 00:40:23.08\00:40:24.69 comes through and just devastates, 00:40:24.72\00:40:26.05 water blows away everything a person has, 00:40:26.09\00:40:28.39 you're going into a very disadvantaged situation. 00:40:28.42\00:40:30.96 And then what about the chances 00:40:30.99\00:40:32.43 of getting malaria and all, that 00:40:32.46\00:40:33.80 that's also heightened, isn't it? 00:40:33.83\00:40:36.03 Typhoid, cholera, all of these things, 00:40:36.06\00:40:37.80 the chances of contracting it goes up. 00:40:37.83\00:40:40.47 Yeah, which for our team, 00:40:40.54\00:40:41.87 we were already taking malaria prophylaxis 00:40:41.90\00:40:43.44 and other and had vaccinations 00:40:43.51\00:40:44.84 to prevent most of these things, 00:40:44.87\00:40:46.41 but for the indigenous population, 00:40:46.44\00:40:49.24 a lot of them don't. 00:40:49.28\00:40:50.65 Yeah. 00:40:50.68\00:40:52.01 I like what you were just saying. 00:40:52.05\00:40:53.38 I think that's a very important concept. 00:40:53.42\00:40:54.88 Because floods in the US are absolutely devastating, 00:40:54.92\00:40:59.25 families lose everything and it's horrible. 00:40:59.29\00:41:02.36 But a flood in the US does not wipe away 00:41:02.39\00:41:04.49 our food supply for the next year. 00:41:04.53\00:41:05.86 No, so true. 00:41:05.89\00:41:07.23 And that's what these people are facing currently right now 00:41:07.30\00:41:09.80 is that these floods have washed away their crops. 00:41:09.83\00:41:12.70 And at this point, there's no chance for them 00:41:12.73\00:41:14.44 to be able to recover that food before the next season. 00:41:14.47\00:41:18.04 When you're a subsistence farmer, 00:41:18.07\00:41:19.71 and you have no other source of income 00:41:19.74\00:41:21.64 and you're living off of what you eat 00:41:21.68\00:41:23.58 and sell the extra for a little bit of money, 00:41:23.65\00:41:26.05 now you've lost your livelihood and your food. 00:41:26.08\00:41:28.45 That's right, because we saw a home, 00:41:28.48\00:41:31.09 I think it was in either Zimbabwe or Zambia, 00:41:31.12\00:41:33.39 that was pretty much a thatched hut. 00:41:33.46\00:41:35.96 You know, the kind of mud and straw and all. 00:41:35.99\00:41:38.29 And we saw a hole in the wall of it, and we said, 00:41:38.33\00:41:40.70 "What will it cost to fix that?" 00:41:40.73\00:41:42.90 And it really broke our hearts to see that, 00:41:42.93\00:41:44.63 "Well, if a really heavy rain came through, 00:41:44.67\00:41:47.07 we know that that house would just disintegrate. 00:41:47.14\00:41:50.14 But the Lord was able to reach out and touch. 00:41:50.21\00:41:52.74 So you're in that kind of a situation 00:41:52.77\00:41:54.21 when you go to places like Malawi, 00:41:54.28\00:41:56.88 how do you determine... 00:41:56.95\00:41:58.91 Excuse me, how do you determine 00:41:58.95\00:42:00.55 when your need, 00:42:00.75\00:42:02.72 when your services have supplied enough need 00:42:02.75\00:42:06.65 so that you could leave it now to the locals, 00:42:06.69\00:42:08.49 or to the government and you say, 00:42:08.52\00:42:09.96 "Okay, it's time for us to pull back or move out." 00:42:10.03\00:42:13.40 So we were doing, as I said, medical clinics, 00:42:13.43\00:42:15.83 but we were also basically an assessment team 00:42:15.86\00:42:18.40 on the ground for the government. 00:42:18.43\00:42:19.77 Okay. 00:42:19.80\00:42:21.14 So we were going to places getting out there 00:42:21.17\00:42:23.71 like, right away as soon as we could, 00:42:23.74\00:42:25.61 they were taking us there. 00:42:25.64\00:42:27.51 And these villages had, 00:42:27.58\00:42:28.91 some of them like we said, a thousands of people. 00:42:28.94\00:42:30.95 In our team, we didn't have enough capacity 00:42:30.98\00:42:34.92 within our team to be able to treat all thousands of them. 00:42:34.95\00:42:38.75 But what we could do then is 00:42:38.79\00:42:40.16 we could treat the most immediate needs, 00:42:40.19\00:42:43.43 then the sickest of the sick, we could treat them. 00:42:43.46\00:42:45.99 And then what I was doing every day was, 00:42:46.03\00:42:48.70 I was taking statistics 00:42:48.73\00:42:51.07 of all of the patients that we'd seen. 00:42:51.10\00:42:52.83 Sometimes hundreds of people I was tracking the statistics, 00:42:52.87\00:42:56.47 and then I would report those 00:42:56.50\00:42:57.84 to the government at the end of the day saying, 00:42:57.87\00:42:59.54 "This place, we have outbreaks of schistosomiasis," 00:42:59.57\00:43:03.35 or something like this. 00:43:03.38\00:43:04.71 "This place has the most malaria 00:43:04.75\00:43:06.21 we've seen so far." 00:43:06.25\00:43:07.62 And I could tell the government what we saw and then 00:43:07.65\00:43:10.19 they could at least have, have an estimate 00:43:10.22\00:43:12.65 of how dire the need was there 00:43:12.69\00:43:14.86 and then they could return later, 00:43:14.89\00:43:16.62 over and over again, as the weeks progressed. 00:43:16.66\00:43:18.83 Wow. 00:43:18.86\00:43:20.20 And be able to talk to people on ground and be like, 00:43:20.23\00:43:22.90 "What are your biggest needs here now? 00:43:22.93\00:43:25.23 Is it water? Is it food? 00:43:25.27\00:43:26.60 Is it shelter? Is it bug nets? 00:43:26.63\00:43:27.97 Is it..." 00:43:28.00\00:43:29.34 You know, "What is your biggest needs here? 00:43:29.37\00:43:30.71 And now what do we need to take back 00:43:30.74\00:43:32.34 to the response committee 00:43:32.37\00:43:34.61 and so they know what to be planning for 00:43:34.64\00:43:36.98 in the future. 00:43:37.05\00:43:38.38 So while we couldn't meet every single person's need, 00:43:38.41\00:43:40.35 we hope that we at least paved the way 00:43:40.42\00:43:41.85 for future response teams and the government 00:43:41.88\00:43:44.82 to be able to come back 00:43:44.85\00:43:46.19 and meet those needs better in the future. 00:43:46.22\00:43:48.69 Now you have needs, don't you feel your school? 00:43:48.72\00:43:52.23 Aren't their needs for Union College there? 00:43:52.26\00:43:55.46 You want to build whatever, 00:43:55.50\00:43:57.07 a technical rescue center you were talking about? 00:43:57.10\00:44:00.34 Tell us about that? 00:44:00.37\00:44:01.80 So, you know, 00:44:01.84\00:44:03.30 we strive for excellence in our program, 00:44:03.34\00:44:04.84 we really want to make it the best that we can. 00:44:04.87\00:44:06.78 And I think that this response is a prime example 00:44:06.81\00:44:09.64 of the quality of the education 00:44:09.68\00:44:11.55 that we've been able to provide. 00:44:11.58\00:44:13.92 The students were ready and willing. 00:44:13.95\00:44:15.28 And, you know, 00:44:15.32\00:44:16.69 one another miracle we didn't talk about 00:44:16.72\00:44:18.05 was how, when we showed up, 00:44:18.09\00:44:19.95 one of the South African colonels 00:44:19.99\00:44:21.49 wasn't really excited about us being there, 00:44:21.52\00:44:22.89 he wasn't sure of our capacity. 00:44:22.92\00:44:25.26 And by the end of it, 00:44:25.29\00:44:26.63 he sat us down for a lessons learned 00:44:26.70\00:44:28.93 for 30 minutes and asked us 00:44:28.96\00:44:30.30 what we were doing and why we worked so well 00:44:30.37\00:44:32.00 and he was impressed with us, 00:44:32.03\00:44:33.37 and what they could do better for the continued response. 00:44:33.44\00:44:35.04 Wow! 00:44:35.07\00:44:36.40 The South African military told us 00:44:36.44\00:44:37.77 that we were the most professional team 00:44:37.81\00:44:39.21 they'd worked with there. 00:44:39.24\00:44:40.58 Wow, praise God. 00:44:40.61\00:44:41.94 So that was, you know, 00:44:41.98\00:44:43.35 a great testament to our program 00:44:43.38\00:44:44.71 and we want to keep pushing to be better. 00:44:44.75\00:44:46.08 You never want to be stagnant. 00:44:46.11\00:44:47.45 You know, the industry keeps pushing forward 00:44:47.48\00:44:48.82 and we want to be part of that. 00:44:48.85\00:44:50.39 You know, and as an academic and educational facility 00:44:50.42\00:44:52.99 when we want to, you know, 00:44:53.02\00:44:54.36 spearhead some of the best techniques out there 00:44:54.39\00:44:56.93 and teach our students those things 00:44:56.96\00:44:58.29 to stay up on the best practices. 00:44:58.33\00:45:01.13 So the technical rescue center, 00:45:01.16\00:45:02.60 tell us about the need for that, 00:45:02.63\00:45:05.20 and what it will facilitate. 00:45:05.23\00:45:06.77 We talked about that little bit. 00:45:06.84\00:45:08.17 I was very impressed to look at the vision 00:45:08.20\00:45:11.67 that you had for that, 00:45:11.71\00:45:13.38 to know that it's not just something 00:45:13.41\00:45:14.74 that would help the school and the students, 00:45:14.78\00:45:16.85 but it has a larger capacity 00:45:16.88\00:45:18.28 to equip other individuals, talk about that? 00:45:18.31\00:45:20.92 Yeah. 00:45:20.95\00:45:22.28 So we're in the very, very beginning stages of it. 00:45:22.32\00:45:25.82 We've got some architectural drawings 00:45:25.85\00:45:27.39 that, you know, a local architectural firm 00:45:27.46\00:45:30.06 donate their time and effort for us. 00:45:30.13\00:45:32.53 Probably about $30,000 worth of effort 00:45:32.56\00:45:34.70 just for the drawings have been given to us, 00:45:34.73\00:45:36.26 donated to us already. 00:45:36.30\00:45:37.63 Wow! 00:45:37.67\00:45:39.00 And they're amazing drawings, places that we could, you know, 00:45:39.03\00:45:41.34 we could practice, confine space, 00:45:41.37\00:45:43.24 rescue, trench rescue, technical rope, 00:45:43.27\00:45:47.08 overturned vehicles, collapse structure, 00:45:47.11\00:45:49.21 grain bin silo rescues, 00:45:49.24\00:45:50.58 all this kind of stuff in this one building. 00:45:50.65\00:45:53.18 And there's nothing like it in the Midwest. 00:45:53.21\00:45:55.55 There's some things out in the... 00:45:55.58\00:45:56.92 on the east of west coast like Seattle, California, 00:45:56.99\00:45:59.32 New York, Texas has a couple of facilities, 00:45:59.35\00:46:01.19 but there's nothing in it 00:46:01.22\00:46:02.56 like that in the Midwest that trains 00:46:02.59\00:46:04.23 to the National Fire Protection Association standards. 00:46:04.26\00:46:07.73 Now which we do, we train to those standards. 00:46:07.76\00:46:09.80 And we like to be able to offer those training standards 00:46:09.83\00:46:14.14 and, you know, classes to the fire departments 00:46:14.17\00:46:17.54 and response teams in our area. 00:46:17.61\00:46:20.68 We just had some flooding in Nebraska 00:46:20.71\00:46:22.04 and we were able to respond to that, as well, 00:46:22.08\00:46:24.18 a different team than us, but also hire our students, 00:46:24.25\00:46:28.52 with the professors that were still in the US. 00:46:28.72\00:46:30.29 Wow! 00:46:30.32\00:46:31.65 And during the response and rescue efforts, 00:46:31.69\00:46:34.42 seven firefighters in our region almost died, 00:46:34.46\00:46:36.73 because they didn't have the proper training. 00:46:36.76\00:46:38.86 And we would like to change that 00:46:38.89\00:46:40.23 and be able to have a center at Union College 00:46:40.30\00:46:42.70 that would be a center of excellence 00:46:42.73\00:46:44.07 and be able to provide that kind of training. 00:46:44.10\00:46:46.33 So what happened is they encountered situations 00:46:46.37\00:46:48.07 that they didn't really actually get training for. 00:46:48.10\00:46:50.41 But this facility, 00:46:50.44\00:46:51.77 because you talked about some of the mock-ups I think, 00:46:51.81\00:46:53.78 I'm gonna use that phrase mock-ups like silo rescue, 00:46:53.81\00:46:57.08 some of the other things you just described. 00:46:57.15\00:46:59.01 If they actually face that crisis 00:46:59.05\00:47:01.88 and knew how to handle it in a mock-up of that set, 00:47:01.92\00:47:06.32 then they won't have to face it for the first time and say, 00:47:06.35\00:47:08.29 "Now what do we do?" Exactly. 00:47:08.32\00:47:09.72 And that's kind of what you're talking about. 00:47:09.76\00:47:11.09 Yeah. 00:47:11.13\00:47:12.46 So we teach this swift water rescue, 00:47:12.49\00:47:13.83 flood management, tech rope, confined space, 00:47:13.90\00:47:15.30 we do all that. 00:47:15.33\00:47:16.97 If we could train them 00:47:17.00\00:47:18.43 on how to do that properly and safely, 00:47:18.47\00:47:20.44 we could prevent, you know, 00:47:20.47\00:47:21.80 rescuer deaths and civilian deaths. 00:47:21.84\00:47:23.44 Because it's kind of like, 00:47:23.51\00:47:24.84 I'm in a situation where I can only travel 00:47:24.87\00:47:26.44 from one place to the next in a helicopter. 00:47:26.47\00:47:28.64 But then when we get there, they say, 00:47:28.68\00:47:30.05 "Okay, well, we're not landing, you have to parachute out." 00:47:30.08\00:47:32.75 And I say, "Well, I've never parachuted before." 00:47:32.78\00:47:35.05 "Well just put it on and just kind of pull the rope 00:47:35.08\00:47:36.89 and you see that thing goes red, 00:47:36.92\00:47:38.25 and just land and pull your feet up. 00:47:38.29\00:47:40.86 You should be okay." 00:47:40.89\00:47:42.69 That's kind of what you're talking about. 00:47:42.72\00:47:44.06 There are situations 00:47:44.13\00:47:45.46 where unfortunately people that are very well trained 00:47:45.49\00:47:47.60 in other areas are not trained 00:47:47.63\00:47:49.33 and they could really risk their lives. 00:47:49.36\00:47:50.70 Oh, yeah. 00:47:50.77\00:47:52.10 Not only theirs, but the other people 00:47:52.13\00:47:53.47 they're trying to take care of. 00:47:53.50\00:47:54.84 Yeah. 00:47:54.87\00:47:56.20 In the rescue world, 00:47:56.24\00:47:57.57 we say never try anything new unseen, 00:47:57.61\00:47:58.94 you need to practice it first 00:47:58.97\00:48:00.61 before you try in the real world. 00:48:00.68\00:48:03.75 And there's always a priority of rescuers too, like 00:48:03.78\00:48:07.65 you are the highest priority on a rescue scene. 00:48:07.68\00:48:10.39 Because if you go into a place that you're not trained 00:48:10.42\00:48:12.55 or capable to rescue in, 00:48:12.59\00:48:14.29 and you become another victim, 00:48:14.32\00:48:15.66 you've just made the situation worse. 00:48:15.69\00:48:17.03 Wow! 00:48:17.06\00:48:18.39 Which is what happened, these seven guys, 00:48:18.43\00:48:19.89 they went out to try and save someone, 00:48:19.93\00:48:21.33 didn't know what they were doing, 00:48:21.36\00:48:22.80 and then they got stuck 00:48:22.83\00:48:24.57 and the coast guard had to come and save them. 00:48:24.60\00:48:25.93 And they just ended up making the situation worse. 00:48:25.97\00:48:27.64 See? 00:48:27.67\00:48:29.00 And we want to train how to prevent that. 00:48:29.04\00:48:30.71 To know what you're doing, 00:48:30.74\00:48:32.07 to be capable and be able to make a difference. 00:48:32.11\00:48:34.68 What about vehicles? Do you need vehicles? 00:48:34.71\00:48:38.08 So as part of our arsenal, you know, goals to be better, 00:48:38.11\00:48:43.18 there's a few things that we'd like to have 00:48:43.22\00:48:44.72 for our program that would help us, you know, 00:48:44.75\00:48:47.56 more medical supplies for EMT courses, that's... 00:48:47.59\00:48:50.33 Medical is a big part of our program, 00:48:50.36\00:48:52.16 emergency medicine, as well as a couple of vehicles 00:48:52.19\00:48:56.56 like for our technical rescue side. 00:48:56.60\00:48:58.77 We'd like a big F-450 00:48:58.80\00:49:00.14 that we could put all our rescue equipment on 00:49:00.17\00:49:02.54 and be able to respond to scenes with that, 00:49:02.57\00:49:05.17 as well as an ambulance also for the medical training. 00:49:05.21\00:49:07.74 That's an SUV F-450. 00:49:07.78\00:49:09.61 Yeah. A big pickup truck. 00:49:09.64\00:49:10.98 Big pickup truck. That's right. 00:49:11.01\00:49:12.35 With all our gear on. 00:49:12.38\00:49:14.58 Other things that would be great 00:49:14.62\00:49:15.95 would be more tech rope gear, swift water gear, 00:49:15.98\00:49:18.12 flood management gear like dry suits 00:49:18.15\00:49:19.62 and things like that. 00:49:19.65\00:49:20.99 We actually have a full list. Wonderful. 00:49:21.02\00:49:22.76 We have a wish list for sure. 00:49:22.79\00:49:24.26 And you took a response cash also, 00:49:24.33\00:49:25.93 just touch on that real quickly? 00:49:25.96\00:49:27.30 Yeah, so all of that would go into our gear cash. 00:49:27.33\00:49:29.20 So it would help us with our training, 00:49:29.23\00:49:31.43 our ability to train the people around us 00:49:31.47\00:49:33.47 and our ability to respond. 00:49:33.54\00:49:34.94 Like we said, we've been on many responses 00:49:34.97\00:49:38.01 and it's a part of our real world experience 00:49:38.04\00:49:39.71 that our students are trained for it 00:49:39.74\00:49:41.78 and then get that experience in the real world 00:49:41.81\00:49:43.65 on an actual scene. 00:49:43.68\00:49:45.01 And that's why we want to make sure 00:49:45.05\00:49:46.38 that our listeners and our viewers 00:49:46.41\00:49:47.92 are going to be able to get the information that they need. 00:49:47.95\00:49:50.59 Because this, 00:49:50.62\00:49:51.95 we're just touching the tip of the iceberg. 00:49:51.99\00:49:54.62 I mean, we're looking at their world 00:49:54.66\00:49:56.46 as it were through it, 00:49:56.49\00:49:57.89 through the pinhole of television. 00:49:57.93\00:49:59.89 Yeah. 00:49:59.93\00:50:01.26 And you saw some pictures, some video, 00:50:01.30\00:50:03.10 and that's just a microcosm 00:50:03.13\00:50:05.87 of what they actually have been doing 00:50:05.90\00:50:07.80 and what they're gonna be exposed to 00:50:07.84\00:50:09.17 in the future. 00:50:09.20\00:50:10.54 What I like about Andrew and Kalie 00:50:10.61\00:50:11.97 is that they want to equip people, 00:50:12.01\00:50:14.41 they want to make the students 00:50:14.44\00:50:15.94 that are coming up in this program, 00:50:15.98\00:50:18.68 come into a very well furnished environment. 00:50:18.71\00:50:22.38 Because I think of the dollar value, 00:50:22.42\00:50:24.32 I think of it this way, 00:50:24.35\00:50:25.69 you know, the Bible uses it this way, 00:50:25.72\00:50:27.06 this is my illustration. 00:50:27.09\00:50:28.42 If the shepherd is... 00:50:28.46\00:50:29.92 If they could strike the shepherd, 00:50:29.96\00:50:31.99 the sheep will scatter. 00:50:32.03\00:50:33.83 And so they're in that shepherding role 00:50:33.90\00:50:36.36 in the sense of emergency, their dollar value is high, 00:50:36.40\00:50:39.63 they're so well trained. 00:50:39.67\00:50:41.17 You know, one of them get hurt, 00:50:41.20\00:50:43.91 not having the right supplies, 00:50:43.94\00:50:45.27 not having the right response cash, 00:50:45.31\00:50:47.78 then all of a sudden, 00:50:47.81\00:50:49.14 it puts hundreds or thousands of lives at risk. 00:50:49.18\00:50:51.45 You know, it's amazing when I think 00:50:51.48\00:50:52.81 about what you guys have done and what you're planning to do, 00:50:52.85\00:50:55.22 how important and imperative it is, 00:50:55.25\00:50:57.39 to have the right supplies to be able to accomplish that. 00:50:57.42\00:51:00.16 Not only for the students that are coming up, 00:51:00.19\00:51:03.06 but for the training of extra emergency individuals 00:51:03.09\00:51:06.29 outside in the Midwest, 00:51:06.33\00:51:07.66 I like that you focused on the Midwest, 00:51:07.70\00:51:10.20 where right now we don't really have that kind of facility. 00:51:10.27\00:51:12.53 And so if you'd like to get in touch 00:51:12.57\00:51:14.40 with Andrew and Kalie 00:51:14.44\00:51:16.71 either as a financial sponsor, 00:51:16.74\00:51:18.77 a person that's capable of providing that F-450, 00:51:18.81\00:51:24.81 that SUV for supply. 00:51:24.85\00:51:26.18 No, pickup truck. 00:51:26.21\00:51:27.55 I said what? It's an SUV pickup truck. 00:51:27.62\00:51:29.15 That's right, pickup truck. 00:51:29.18\00:51:30.52 Thank you, honey. 00:51:30.59\00:51:31.92 And I should know better, right? 00:51:31.95\00:51:33.29 I should know about trucks. Oh, yeah. 00:51:33.32\00:51:34.69 But the response cash, 00:51:34.72\00:51:37.66 building that technical research center, 00:51:37.69\00:51:41.10 here's the information that you're going to need 00:51:41.13\00:51:42.73 to be able to make that a reality. 00:51:42.76\00:51:44.67 You can contact them at this email 00:51:44.70\00:51:46.43 ucinfo@ucollege.edu. 00:51:46.47\00:51:51.01 That's U-C-I-N-F-O@ucollege.edu 00:51:51.04\00:51:55.44 or call (402) 486-2600. 00:51:55.48\00:52:01.18 Once again, (402) 486-2600. 00:52:01.22\00:52:07.26 And I know, honey, 00:52:07.29\00:52:08.72 if we ever take the challenge up, 00:52:08.76\00:52:11.03 maybe one day we'll just kind of, 00:52:11.06\00:52:12.93 maybe we'll go just to see what you do. 00:52:12.96\00:52:14.66 You're more than welcome. 00:52:14.70\00:52:16.03 It wouldn't hurt, 00:52:16.06\00:52:17.40 because I could tighten my muscles up here but... 00:52:17.47\00:52:19.93 It's a good rescue course. It's amazing. 00:52:19.97\00:52:22.07 When you look back on what you've done so far, 00:52:22.10\00:52:25.17 what can you say has been the most valuable lesson 00:52:25.21\00:52:27.94 you've drawn out of what you've done so far. 00:52:27.98\00:52:30.45 I'll start with you, Kalie. 00:52:30.48\00:52:31.81 Oh, no. 00:52:31.85\00:52:33.21 The most valuable? Yeah. 00:52:33.25\00:52:35.08 Most valuable lesson. 00:52:35.12\00:52:36.52 It didn't have to be the most valuable lesson 00:52:36.55\00:52:38.62 that you've drawn from, 00:52:38.65\00:52:39.99 because you're still learning, you're still growing. 00:52:40.06\00:52:42.29 I think from my time as a student, 00:52:42.32\00:52:45.49 'cause I started as a student 00:52:45.53\00:52:46.90 before going back as a professor. 00:52:46.93\00:52:48.26 From my time as a student, 00:52:48.30\00:52:49.63 I think just the experiences in my life 00:52:49.66\00:52:54.07 that forced me to rely on God, 00:52:54.14\00:52:57.31 it gave me confidence in my relationship with him. 00:52:57.34\00:53:00.48 But also there were a lot of instances 00:53:00.51\00:53:02.61 where God had me get myself out of my mess. 00:53:02.64\00:53:05.01 And so it grew me in my character, 00:53:05.05\00:53:08.55 and my confidence and my ability as a person 00:53:08.58\00:53:11.39 giving me the confidence then to go on and do a masters, 00:53:11.42\00:53:14.19 and to work with ADRA, and to go overseas 00:53:14.26\00:53:17.33 and eventually to come back and work as professor. 00:53:17.36\00:53:21.16 Right. 00:53:21.20\00:53:22.53 Andrew? 00:53:22.56\00:53:23.90 What about you? 00:53:23.97\00:53:26.94 I think every person has a different calling. 00:53:26.97\00:53:29.60 You know, originally, 00:53:29.64\00:53:31.01 I had a thought I was gonna be a medical doctor 00:53:31.04\00:53:33.98 and then found something else that had my passion. 00:53:34.01\00:53:37.48 You know, I think saving people physically 00:53:37.55\00:53:40.02 is what I feel called to do. 00:53:40.05\00:53:41.88 You know, there's... 00:53:41.92\00:53:43.25 saving people spiritually is what you guys do 00:53:43.28\00:53:44.75 on a daily basis. 00:53:44.79\00:53:46.19 And, and for us, I think, I like to follow 00:53:46.22\00:53:48.72 the other side of what Jesus did, 00:53:48.76\00:53:50.13 you know, where He fed the hungry 00:53:50.16\00:53:51.49 and, you know, took care of the sick 00:53:51.53\00:53:52.86 and clothed people. 00:53:52.89\00:53:54.23 And I think that's what my calling is, 00:53:54.26\00:53:58.83 to show that love physically for people, and this... 00:53:58.87\00:54:02.20 I think this program is the best way to do that. 00:54:02.24\00:54:03.71 It's a great way to train to actually meet people's needs 00:54:03.74\00:54:06.17 and try and share God's love in there, 00:54:06.21\00:54:08.11 as you as you build a relationship with them 00:54:08.14\00:54:10.35 and take care of them, show them you care. 00:54:10.38\00:54:12.11 You know, life lessons are so important to glean 00:54:12.15\00:54:14.48 from the work that you do. 00:54:14.52\00:54:15.85 Because as you go down the road many years from now, 00:54:15.88\00:54:18.95 in the same field, 00:54:18.99\00:54:20.36 you're gonna be able to write a memoir, 00:54:20.39\00:54:21.92 and talk about what we did 00:54:21.96\00:54:23.29 in different parts of the world. 00:54:23.32\00:54:24.83 And it's amazing to see that 00:54:24.86\00:54:27.03 these two lives are dedicated to making a difference 00:54:27.10\00:54:29.70 in everyone else's life. 00:54:29.73\00:54:31.27 It's amazing. 00:54:31.30\00:54:32.63 And we're gonna take a short news break 00:54:32.67\00:54:35.84 for some announcements. 00:54:35.87\00:54:37.21 And on the other side of the news break 00:54:37.24\00:54:38.57 we'll be back for a few closing thoughts. 00:54:38.61\00:54:41.08 Don't go away. 00:54:41.11\00:54:42.54
