Before I 00:01:51.97\00:01:54.31 introduce our guests, just wanted to share 00:01:54.38\00:01:55.71 Proverbs 22 verse 6 with you. The Bible says, "Train 00:01:55.81\00:01:59.81 up a child in the way he should go; and when he's 00:01:59.88\00:02:02.92 old, he will not depart from it." I'm a huge 00:02:03.02\00:02:07.39 advocate of Christian education, and we know 00:02:07.49\00:02:10.76 that you went through Christian education. 00:02:10.86\00:02:14.03 - I most certainly did. - And you know, it's 00:02:14.10\00:02:16.13 true! You came- I mean, you may have had a little 00:02:16.23\00:02:18.63 break in there, but he came back because of 00:02:18.73\00:02:21.00 his training. - Amen. - And the institution 00:02:21.10\00:02:23.64 we're going to be talking about today is Weimar 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.14 Academy, and I guarantee you: this is an amazing 00:02:26.24\00:02:31.18 academy for children, because not only do 00:02:31.28\00:02:34.88 they have the highest in academic programs, 00:02:35.02\00:02:38.75 but they've got community involvement programs, 00:02:38.85\00:02:42.59 mission trips, the spiritual aspects and training that 00:02:42.69\00:02:48.23 goes on is amazing, and we see kids all the time 00:02:48.30\00:02:51.57 who go there and come away changed. So let's 00:02:51.67\00:02:54.24 introduce you to our special guests! We 00:02:54.34\00:02:56.91 have some wonderful ones here. Kirk Krueger, you 00:02:57.01\00:02:59.54 are the principal for Weimar Academy! For 00:02:59.64\00:03:03.48 how long? - For two years... - Two years; alright! - ...I'm 00:03:03.55\00:03:06.41 the principal at the academy; thoroughly 00:03:06.48\00:03:07.95 enjoyed it. - I know! - I want to say, though, 00:03:08.05\00:03:10.72 coming in yesterday from California back into this 00:03:10.82\00:03:14.36 old stomping ground- just so many memories 00:03:14.46\00:03:16.39 driving back here onto 3ABN campus. Marianne 00:03:16.49\00:03:20.50 and I were involved here a lot over the...about 15 00:03:20.60\00:03:23.00 years, and it was just a lot of memories. - Well, 00:03:23.10\00:03:26.27 you are the son-in-law of Jim and Camille Gilley, 00:03:26.33\00:03:29.14 so you are up here quite a bit, and we got to watch 00:03:29.24\00:03:32.07 your little ones grow up. We're gonna introduce 00:03:32.17\00:03:34.78 one of them in just a moment, but we're so 00:03:34.88\00:03:37.25 glad you're here today, Kirk. - Thank you so much. 00:03:37.35\00:03:38.91 - And then we have Justin Nedley! And Justin, I'm 00:03:39.01\00:03:42.48 sure that many people will recognize that last 00:03:42.58\00:03:45.72 last. You are the youngest of four sons of Dr. Neil 00:03:45.82\00:03:49.72 Nedley! - Yes, I am, yeah. - And what does 00:03:49.82\00:03:52.23 your dad do at Weimar Institute? - He is the 00:03:52.29\00:03:55.90 president there at Weimar Institute, and he also runs 00:03:56.00\00:03:58.60 some health...depression recovery programs there. 00:03:58.67\00:04:01.70 - Amen, amen. So, what grade are you in this 00:04:01.80\00:04:05.81 year? - I'm a junior in the academy currently. 00:04:05.91\00:04:08.54 - Okay. Well, we're really glad to have you here, 00:04:08.64\00:04:10.68 and I'm sure you must play a musical instrument. Your 00:04:10.78\00:04:14.58 whole family's musically talented. - Yes, I play 00:04:14.68\00:04:16.82 the piano. - Good. Good, good. Now, the next young 00:04:16.92\00:04:20.16 lady we're going to introduce is Kirk's daughter, and we 00:04:20.22\00:04:23.32 knew her- I guess last time we saw you, Venice, 00:04:23.43\00:04:26.06 you were probably 12 years old. She's all grown up! And 00:04:26.19\00:04:30.17 beautiful. - Beautiful young lady. - Venice 00:04:30.27\00:04:32.80 Krueger, so glad that you're back today! 00:04:32.87\00:04:35.40 - Glad to be here! - Yeah, wished you could've brought 00:04:35.54\00:04:37.41 little Carrie with you, as well. - She really 00:04:37.51\00:04:39.57 wanted to come, but... - But we're glad that 00:04:39.67\00:04:42.61 you're here. We're going to get your story in just 00:04:42.71\00:04:44.48 a minute. And then, Sunika! Sunika Tarusenga-Jojo. 00:04:44.58\00:04:51.39 Is that correct? - Yes, you nailed it. [laughter] 00:04:51.55\00:04:54.09 - You had to be a smart little girl just to know 00:04:54.19\00:04:55.59 how to spell that name. Where are you from 00:04:55.69\00:04:59.19 originally, Sunika? - I grew up in Texas, but 00:04:59.29\00:05:02.46 now, we live in California. - Oh! I grew up in California 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.73 and then married an Texan. [laughter] So, we just kind 00:05:04.83\00:05:09.37 of... - Once a Texan, always a Texan. - Yeah, 00:05:09.47\00:05:11.61 that's true, that's true. Well, before we get into 00:05:11.74\00:05:14.34 the exciting things that are happening at Weimar, 00:05:14.44\00:05:17.98 honey, you've got some music you wanted to 00:05:18.08\00:05:19.98 introduce. - Yes. And just one of my... Jaime 00:05:20.08\00:05:22.68 Jorge. Jaime Jorge just... I love the way he plays 00:05:22.82\00:05:26.39 the violin. "Face to Face." 00:05:26.49\00:05:28.99 - I love listening to... - Jaime. - Jaime. Just 00:08:23.77\00:08:27.00 love it. Kirk, share 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.10 what's going on at Weimar. - Well, let me give you just 00:08:29.17\00:08:32.54 a little bit of information about Weimar. The institute 00:08:32.67\00:08:35.54 is on approximately 500 acres there in the Sierra 00:08:35.64\00:08:39.05 Nevada mountains. We're about 15 miles below 00:08:39.15\00:08:42.12 the snow line, so this year, I think we got 00:08:42.18\00:08:44.52 almost 48 feet of snow up in the mountains. 00:08:44.59\00:08:46.82 And so, it's really neat to be in the mountains. 00:08:46.92\00:08:49.29 But what just happened here recently at the 00:08:49.39\00:08:51.19 institute (that's been in the works for several 00:08:51.29\00:08:53.70 years) is, February of 2019, Weimar received 00:08:53.83\00:08:57.97 accreditation. And what's the thing that's really 00:08:58.10\00:09:00.77 amazing is they backdated it to January of 2018. - So 00:09:00.87\00:09:06.14 this is for the college, right? - This is just for 00:09:06.27\00:09:08.14 the college, and that has been in the works 00:09:08.24\00:09:09.91 for a number of years, and they finally received 00:09:09.98\00:09:12.05 it. The people that came out and did the accreditation were 00:09:12.11\00:09:14.55 really impressed. They said, "What you have 00:09:14.68\00:09:16.52 here is amazing." One thing I noticed that they 00:09:16.58\00:09:19.12 mentioned is that the institute we are at, 00:09:19.22\00:09:22.39 many people don't even know the mission of the 00:09:22.49\00:09:24.26 institute where I'm a member of-but your 00:09:24.39\00:09:28.06 kids not only know the mission but believe the 00:09:28.16\00:09:30.70 mission. The mission of Weimar Institute is to 00:09:30.83\00:09:33.00 heal a hurting world, kind of like 3ABN: 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.30 "Mending broken people." - Amen! - That is what 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.84 the mission of us as Christians should be- 00:09:38.97\00:09:41.18 to help those people. - So, what- tell us 00:09:41.28\00:09:43.48 some of the curriculums for Weimar Institute. 00:09:43.58\00:09:47.32 - So, they have an accredited nursing program. It's a two-year 00:09:47.42\00:09:51.52 associate nursing program that will, this fall, be 00:09:51.62\00:09:54.96 starting the bachelors of nursing; has education, 00:09:55.09\00:09:58.03 has theology, has pre-med, pre-dental... There's also 00:09:58.16\00:10:04.60 one that has psychology that is starting up; this 00:10:04.70\00:10:08.87 Fall or is in the process of that. So, there's a 00:10:08.97\00:10:11.84 number of great programs there that can take place. 00:10:11.94\00:10:15.88 And also, there's a six-month health program where people 00:10:15.98\00:10:18.75 can come and take health education to go out and 00:10:18.85\00:10:21.78 work in their communities with health. - Praise God! 00:10:21.85\00:10:24.35 Well, there's always something exciting 00:10:24.45\00:10:25.99 going on at Weimar. But Justin, tell us a little bit- 00:10:26.09\00:10:29.46 and you all just jump in-tell us about the 00:10:29.62\00:10:32.99 typical day at Weimar Academy. - So, school 00:10:33.09\00:10:36.90 starts at 8 o'clock in the morning at Weimar 00:10:36.97\00:10:39.13 Academy, and we start out with worship. And 00:10:39.23\00:10:43.44 every single morning, we have song service 00:10:43.54\00:10:44.87 and then morning worship where the different students 00:10:44.94\00:10:46.84 get to share their testimonies and worship thoughts that 00:10:46.94\00:10:49.84 they have come up with every morning during 00:10:49.94\00:10:52.35 morning worship. And then, we go out to our classes 00:10:52.48\00:10:54.52 for the morning; and then at 1 o'clock, we go to lunch. 00:10:54.62\00:10:58.02 Then after lunch, we have a work education 00:10:58.15\00:11:00.66 program. There's also some vocational programs, 00:11:00.76\00:11:04.09 and I'm involved in one of those. I'm in the flooring 00:11:04.19\00:11:06.96 vocational class, and it's really awesome, 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.93 because Mr. Krueger, here, he's been able to teach me 00:11:10.03\00:11:13.64 how to do flooring, how to make a living and stuff, 00:11:13.77\00:11:16.84 and a way to get through college, and maybe this 00:11:16.97\00:11:18.94 might even be my career one day. We'll find out. 00:11:19.04\00:11:20.94 [laughter] - Well, I know Kirk's done well at it, and 00:11:21.08\00:11:23.98 it's a well-paying job, particularly in California, 00:11:24.08\00:11:28.72 right? So, Venice, your momma is the librarian, 00:11:28.82\00:11:33.66 your daddy is the principal; do they really kind of make 00:11:33.76\00:11:39.19 sure you're towing the line 'cause you represent 00:11:39.29\00:11:41.83 the family? - Well, I try to do my best, but 00:11:41.96\00:11:45.30 I'd say that it's just amazing being at Weimar. 00:11:47.10\00:11:50.54 There's a lot of good influences, and it's just 00:11:50.71\00:11:54.61 an amazing place to be. [Amen!] - And Sunika, 00:11:54.71\00:11:59.28 you also have a brother who is going to Weimar, 00:11:59.31\00:12:02.58 right? - Yes. - Where's home in California? - Closer 00:12:02.68\00:12:07.12 to Sacramento, so Rancho Cordova. - Okay. Well, we're 00:12:07.22\00:12:10.86 glad- I want you all to tell me, because I know 00:12:10.93\00:12:14.30 that Don Macintosh has been here before, and I 00:12:14.40\00:12:16.83 get so excited when you talk about the total 00:12:16.90\00:12:21.90 community involvement, TCI. Jump in and tell me: 00:12:22.00\00:12:28.48 I know you do stuff on a weekly basis, I believe, 00:12:28.64\00:12:31.25 isn't it? Tell us about- somebody-tell me about 00:12:31.35\00:12:34.48 TCI. - So, TCI takes place every Wednesday, 00:12:34.55\00:12:39.12 so we spend the whole morning going out and 00:12:39.19\00:12:41.52 just serving the community. My TCI group actually goes 00:12:41.59\00:12:45.26 canvassing, so we go door-to-door and distribute 00:12:45.36\00:12:48.06 literature to people there. - And you do projects that 00:12:48.16\00:12:51.77 are very helpful to people. I mean, yard projects, and... 00:12:51.87\00:12:55.57 What's been your favorite TCI experience, Venice? 00:12:55.67\00:13:00.31 - Probably...I like to clean up different 00:13:02.51\00:13:05.28 people's yards and stuff like that, or going to the 00:13:05.38\00:13:08.12 nursing homes and singing to the elderly people is 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.85 really nice. - And it's had an amazing impact. 00:13:10.99\00:13:14.76 The church is growing because of this?. 00:13:14.82\00:13:17.69 Tell us about TCI. - Well, one thing that's really 00:13:17.79\00:13:19.19 interesting- so, one of the groups that... I just live 00:13:19.29\00:13:22.26 off-campus of Weimar, and so we can walk to the 00:13:22.36\00:13:24.53 neighborhood that we work in with my family group. 00:13:24.63\00:13:26.90 There's about seven in my family group. And so, 00:13:27.04\00:13:30.07 we met this couple that just moved into our neighborhood, 00:13:30.21\00:13:32.24 Pat and Renée, and we started helping them clean 00:13:32.34\00:13:35.41 up their yard and got to be really close friends 00:13:35.48\00:13:37.98 with them. They just called me here- I think it was 00:13:38.11\00:13:41.22 approximately about a month ago, and they 00:13:41.35\00:13:43.65 said, "You know what, we were in one of- the medical 00:13:43.75\00:13:48.02 clinic on campus asked us to go to some cooking 00:13:48.12\00:13:51.96 classes." And he said, "We've just become 00:13:52.03\00:13:53.53 vegan." So, it's just amazing the transforming 00:13:53.63\00:13:57.27 of people's lives by just befriending them and 00:13:57.37\00:13:59.43 sharing them the health message. They're open, 00:13:59.53\00:14:01.64 and they've come to a number of functions on 00:14:01.74\00:14:03.74 campus. And then, this past Sabbath, we had a 00:14:03.84\00:14:07.98 couple that was baptized from the total community 00:14:08.04\00:14:11.08 involvement. - Amen. - And the testimonies 00:14:11.15\00:14:13.45 are- just exciting to hear their testimonies. 00:14:13.55\00:14:15.18 - We've had some video clips before that Don has 00:14:15.28\00:14:20.66 brought with him, and it is exciting. But, now, 00:14:20.76\00:14:23.49 it is my understanding: it's not just the student 00:14:23.56\00:14:26.80 body, but the teachers and professors-everybody 00:14:26.93\00:14:30.80 gets involved in this; is that right? So tell us 00:14:30.93\00:14:33.97 about what your favorite experience has been. - So, 00:14:34.07\00:14:37.01 one TCI, I went with Mr. Krueger here; we went 00:14:37.11\00:14:40.88 to a house there, and we had to build a shed 00:14:40.98\00:14:42.88 for this elderly lady that was wanting to 00:14:42.98\00:14:46.88 move some of her stuff from her garage to a 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.52 shed. And so, we went there and we spent the 00:14:49.58\00:14:51.55 whole morning putting together the shed. We 00:14:51.65\00:14:53.29 ran into some issues, but when we were done, it was 00:14:53.36\00:14:56.29 just amazing. She was so grateful, and it just 00:14:56.39\00:14:58.29 really made an impact on me to realize how 00:14:58.39\00:15:01.20 such a small thing for us, just building a shed, 00:15:01.30\00:15:03.47 can have such a big, huge impact on someone in the 00:15:03.57\00:15:06.77 community. - Well, I know that this is why you've got 00:15:06.87\00:15:10.37 such a great reputation. - One thing that really 00:15:10.47\00:15:12.97 caught my mind that- and that is, y'all do 00:15:13.07\00:15:17.05 so many mission trips a year. - We do. - I 00:15:17.15\00:15:20.45 mean, what's involved there? I mean, wow! 00:15:20.52\00:15:22.08 Here, you go to school; here, you go to build 00:15:22.18\00:15:24.45 things; here, you get to assist people; here, 00:15:24.55\00:15:26.89 you get to daily start the day off with prayer, 00:15:26.99\00:15:31.76 and then you're also getting to go on mission 00:15:33.09\00:15:35.60 trips. And not only, I guess, of your choice, 00:15:35.66\00:15:38.90 but...how does this all work? And how many 00:15:39.00\00:15:41.44 do you go on a year? - So, we take two weeks 00:15:41.50\00:15:44.44 every year, or a little over two weeks, and 00:15:44.51\00:15:46.51 the whole school mobilizes and goes on a mission trip. 00:15:46.57\00:15:49.34 Usually, we do four; this year, we did three. But 00:15:49.41\00:15:51.85 everybody in the school gets to pick where they 00:15:51.95\00:15:54.85 would like to go. And usually, they get their 00:15:54.92\00:15:56.85 first or second pick on where they go. This year, 00:15:56.92\00:16:00.06 we went to Kenya, to Cuba, and then into Arizona and 00:16:00.16\00:16:04.13 New Mexico. - Mm. Tell us about the Kenya trip, 00:16:04.23\00:16:07.30 guys. - So, on the Kenya trip, we went to a school 00:16:07.36\00:16:11.00 in Kenya, and we had to- we went with Maranatha 00:16:11.07\00:16:15.14 and we built a cafeteria for the school there. And 00:16:15.20\00:16:18.31 I mean, when we got there, we saw... Maranatha had 00:16:18.37\00:16:21.24 been there a lot, so a lot of the classrooms 00:16:21.34\00:16:23.81 had been built there by Maranatha. There's over 00:16:23.88\00:16:26.58 600 students there at the school. We noticed 00:16:26.65\00:16:30.32 that there was no cafeteria there; they were eating out, 00:16:30.42\00:16:32.69 just in their classrooms, some of them, some outside... 00:16:32.79\00:16:35.12 And there was not really a kitchen for the cooks 00:16:35.22\00:16:37.73 to cook at all, so they were just cooking over 00:16:37.79\00:16:39.83 an open fire. When we went there, we built a 00:16:39.93\00:16:43.13 cafeteria, and it was really awesome. The 00:16:43.23\00:16:46.53 last day we were there, we were able to go in 00:16:46.63\00:16:48.30 with the kids as they had their first meal 00:16:48.37\00:16:49.70 in that cafeteria. You could just see how happy 00:16:49.80\00:16:52.64 they were and how excited they were to have a place 00:16:52.74\00:16:55.31 to eat now. It was just a really life-changing 00:16:55.41\00:16:58.28 experience. - Before we get the rest, 'cause I 00:16:58.38\00:17:00.48 know you went, as well, Venice-but before we 00:17:00.58\00:17:02.88 get your testimony, let's look at the video of what 00:17:02.95\00:17:06.69 happened in Kenya. - Wow. 00:17:06.76\00:17:09.09 [children singing Kenyan music] 00:17:10.39\00:17:18.97 [inspirational piano music] 00:17:19.00\00:17:28.48 - So, Weimar Academy is here 00:17:31.28\00:17:33.42 Seventh-day Adventist school for about 10 days. 00:17:33.52\00:17:36.25 We are currently working on the cafeteria. So our 00:17:36.38\00:17:39.15 first day, we're running a lot about putting blocks 00:17:39.25\00:17:41.12 in, and making mistakes and taking it out, putting 00:17:41.22\00:17:43.86 them back, but our energy's good and I hope it stays 00:17:43.93\00:17:46.29 like this for the next 10 days, and I'm sure 00:17:46.39\00:17:48.26 we will get better with time. - Something special about 00:17:48.33\00:17:51.27 this mission trip is that I was able to come here 00:17:51.37\00:17:53.57 a few years ago and build a classroom at this exact 00:17:53.64\00:17:55.90 location. It's been a huge blessing being 00:17:55.97\00:17:58.17 able to come back and see how the school has 00:17:58.24\00:17:59.87 grown and build them a much-needed cafeteria. 00:17:59.91\00:18:02.71 - Here in beautiful Kenya as we're just completing 00:18:02.84\00:18:05.78 a mission trip, we have had expert faculty with 00:18:05.88\00:18:09.52 Christlike compassion, teamed up with receptive 00:18:11.15\00:18:13.96 students, also with Christlike compassion 00:18:14.09\00:18:17.06 that has performed hundreds of thousands of dollars of 00:18:17.16\00:18:21.43 medical care, free of charge to Kenya citizens, 00:18:21.53\00:18:26.20 saving lives, even diagnosing undiagnosed tuberculosis and 00:18:26.33\00:18:30.34 undiagnosed cancer, and having individuals wracked 00:18:30.44\00:18:34.58 with pain that are leaving now without pain: multiple 00:18:34.71\00:18:38.58 medical procedures, dental procedures... And this really 00:18:38.68\00:18:44.55 happens as a result of Weimar Institute's vision 00:18:44.62\00:18:48.16 of healing a hurting world. 00:18:48.22\00:18:51.06 - What I understand, Justin, is that you did more than 00:19:12.91\00:19:15.22 just build a cafeteria. - Yeah, that is correct. 00:19:15.32\00:19:17.65 So, while we were there, we also did three days of 00:19:18.65\00:19:20.66 medical and dental clinics, and we offered over 200 00:19:20.76\00:19:23.83 thousand dollars of care for free to the citizens of 00:19:23.93\00:19:26.26 Kenya there. - Wow. - And while I was there, I got to 00:19:26.36\00:19:28.96 help one of the dentists, Dr. Fischer, and I got to 00:19:29.06\00:19:32.87 pull about...I think it was four teeth while 00:19:32.93\00:19:35.60 I was there, so I got to learn some of the things 00:19:35.67\00:19:38.11 of dental care. I- really actually helped me consider 00:19:38.21\00:19:41.98 that is their career path, potentially, for me. 00:19:42.08\00:19:44.21 And it's really awesome how, you know, a lot of 00:19:44.28\00:19:46.01 people won't get that opportunity to work in 00:19:46.08\00:19:48.08 dental and work and pull teeth and stuff, especially 00:19:48.18\00:19:50.92 since we're out here in the States. But on the 00:19:51.02\00:19:52.45 mission trips, we're able to do that, and I can help 00:19:52.52\00:19:54.82 people as well as learn about dentistry and see 00:19:54.92\00:19:58.53 if maybe that's something I want to do in the future. 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.40 - Amen! - You not only pull the teeth; you had 00:20:00.43\00:20:02.46 one that broke off, and you had to take and dig 00:20:02.53\00:20:05.20 the roots out. - Ooh! - So, I guess it's simple pulling 00:20:05.27\00:20:08.34 of teeth. - Well, you know, something that I always 00:20:08.44\00:20:13.27 say-and I'm sure people get tired of me saying 00:20:13.38\00:20:15.44 this-but I just want to repeat it because maybe 00:20:15.51\00:20:18.61 somebody hasn't heard it: if you want to ensure that 00:20:18.68\00:20:23.22 your child gets involved, and in a personal way... 00:20:23.28\00:20:27.69 I mean, has that intimate relationship with the Lord, 00:20:27.79\00:20:30.03 send them on a mission trip. I've seen kids who've 00:20:30.13\00:20:33.76 totally turned around because- you know, we 00:20:33.86\00:20:36.83 are, dare I say, spoiled. We're very spoiled in the 00:20:36.93\00:20:42.04 United States, and we have everything we want 00:20:42.14\00:20:44.77 at our fingertips. And not everybody has all 00:20:44.84\00:20:47.74 the same advantages, but even if you're the poorest 00:20:47.84\00:20:51.11 of the poor here, when you go to places like 00:20:51.21\00:20:54.42 Africa or other places, you see joy in people 00:20:54.52\00:21:00.59 in a simple life but you begin to appreciate what 00:21:00.69\00:21:05.56 you've got. Tell us about your experience, Venice, 00:21:05.66\00:21:08.86 in Kenya. - Well, I had an interesting experience. 00:21:08.96\00:21:11.83 I was escorting different patients to the pharmacy 00:21:13.47\00:21:18.17 during the clinics we were having. And there 00:21:18.27\00:21:22.08 was one time that I went- Dr. Anthony told me 00:21:22.18\00:21:24.75 to come into his office- and he told me- he showed 00:21:24.88\00:21:28.02 me- he introduced me to this lady, and he said 00:21:28.18\00:21:30.85 that she needed to go to the lab and that she 00:21:30.95\00:21:34.29 might have tuberculosis... and it hit me really hard. 00:21:34.39\00:21:38.43 I escorted her to the lab, and she got her 00:21:38.53\00:21:40.80 lab work done so that she could get treated properly. 00:21:40.90\00:21:43.77 But it really hit me later how much that probably 00:21:43.90\00:21:47.34 affected her life so that she could get the proper 00:21:47.44\00:21:50.71 treatment. - Amen...amen. So, that's something that... 00:21:50.81\00:21:55.04 How long were you in Kenya? - ...Two weeks? - Two weeks, 00:21:55.14\00:21:59.31 so... And as I understand it, you offer several different 00:21:59.41\00:22:04.42 locations, and then the kids gets to choose during 00:22:04.52\00:22:09.36 that two-week period whether they're gonna go to Kenya, 00:22:09.46\00:22:11.99 Cuba, or- where else did you go this year? - Arizona 00:22:12.09\00:22:14.36 and New Mexico. - In Arizona and New Mexico; 00:22:14.46\00:22:17.13 okay. Now, Sunika, you were not on the Kenya 00:22:17.20\00:22:23.00 trip. Where did you go? - No, I had the privilege 00:22:23.10\00:22:25.24 of going to Cuba along with 14 other students 00:22:25.34\00:22:27.88 and staff. So, we spent the mornings and door- 00:22:27.98\00:22:31.18 to-door visitations with the people there, praying 00:22:31.31\00:22:33.75 for them and just interacting with them. And then in the 00:22:33.82\00:22:36.65 afternoons, we had an evangelistic meeting for 00:22:36.75\00:22:40.19 the adults and one for the kids, as well. - So 00:22:40.29\00:22:42.69 did you actually do some of the preaching and the 00:22:42.79\00:22:44.73 teaching? - Yes, yes. - How exciting! - It was 00:22:44.83\00:22:48.26 a huge blessing. - Yeah! That's- I think we brought 00:22:48.36\00:22:51.23 a little video clip, or you brought a little 00:22:51.33\00:22:53.07 video clip; we'll look at that now. 00:22:53.17\00:22:54.90 - "He who has the Son has life, and he who 00:22:56.84\00:22:59.57 does not have the Son does not have life." 00:22:59.67\00:23:02.18 We had the opportunity to share the hope that 00:23:02.31\00:23:04.98 is found in Jesus Christ with the people of Cuba. 00:23:05.08\00:23:08.28 Along with eight other students and five staff 00:23:08.42\00:23:11.05 from Weimar Academy, I had the opportunity to 00:23:11.15\00:23:13.86 take part in one of three evangelistic campaigns that 00:23:13.99\00:23:16.62 held in Pinar del Río province in Western Cuba. 00:23:16.73\00:23:19.56 - I had hated the idea of preaching. But when we 00:23:20.20\00:23:22.80 got there, we visited people and got to know 00:23:22.86\00:23:26.37 them better; it was a very warm and friendly 00:23:26.47\00:23:28.34 environment. When you came down to actually 00:23:28.47\00:23:31.11 give presentations, it wasn't that bad, after 00:23:31.21\00:23:34.68 all. - While we were there, there was this 00:23:34.78\00:23:37.45 one officer who wanted us to be deported, because 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.68 we talked about the Bible- Christianity. But there was 00:23:39.81\00:23:42.35 this other officer who said, "No! No, no- stop! 00:23:42.45\00:23:45.12 These people, they're doing good in this town. 00:23:45.19\00:23:47.46 There are so many bad things going on? 00:23:47.59\00:23:50.23 and these people are talking about God. 00:23:50.36\00:23:53.43 They're talking about how to change our 00:23:53.56\00:23:56.16 life with the Bible. Let them stay. They're doing 00:23:56.26\00:23:59.53 a good work." That really touched me, and it makes 00:23:59.60\00:24:03.61 me remember that even in a closed-off country as Cuba, 00:24:03.71\00:24:07.38 there're still people that are receptive; they just 00:24:07.48\00:24:09.88 have open hearts and willing hearts, and that's 00:24:09.98\00:24:13.05 all that Christ needs. [cello music] 00:24:13.15\00:24:21.26 - You know what I love about Cuba? It is SO 00:24:23.32\00:24:25.43 colorful! Tell us about the people and just the fruit 00:24:25.56\00:24:30.27 of the mission. - Well, the people there were 00:24:30.37\00:24:32.63 really wonderful. They're all very welcoming and 00:24:32.70\00:24:34.64 warm; and by the grace of God, we were actually 00:24:34.70\00:24:37.41 able to have 11 baptisms on our last day there, 00:24:37.51\00:24:41.14 and there are 24 people that are in Cuba that are 00:24:41.21\00:24:44.01 continuing to study the Bible with some of the 00:24:44.08\00:24:46.45 Bible workers there. We're actually able to go into 00:24:46.51\00:24:49.58 these untouched cities that had never had any 00:24:49.68\00:24:52.65 meetings before and reach the people there. - So these 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.82 had been unentered, kind of dark cities and we'd 00:24:55.92\00:24:58.66 never been there before. How exciting. How many 00:24:58.76\00:25:01.33 mission trips have you been on, Sunika? - This 00:25:01.40\00:25:04.43 is actually my third. - Your third. And where 00:25:04.53\00:25:06.97 have you been before this? - I went to Arizona with the 00:25:07.07\00:25:12.17 academy my freshman year, then I went to Belize last 00:25:12.27\00:25:14.78 year-2018-and then this year, Cuba. - Okay. And 00:25:14.88\00:25:19.21 what has- how has that impacted your life personally? 00:25:19.28\00:25:23.72 Do you find that on a mission trip, you recognize 00:25:23.82\00:25:28.42 your dependence upon the Lord? - Yeah, for sure; for 00:25:28.52\00:25:30.99 sure. It changes the way you see things. And for me, 00:25:31.09\00:25:34.03 going to Cuba was actually my first time doing something 00:25:34.10\00:25:37.77 with public speaking, so I know I didn't feel okay, 00:25:37.83\00:25:42.17 adequate, or prepared, so it changed the way I saw 00:25:42.27\00:25:45.24 things and I really had to rely on God. - Amen! 00:25:45.34\00:25:48.38 - So did you know that you were going to speak before 00:25:48.44\00:25:49.84 you went over there, or they chose you once you 00:25:49.98\00:25:52.11 got over there, or...? - We found out before; 00:25:52.21\00:25:54.68 we find out prior. [laughter] - Okay,? 00:25:54.78\00:25:56.99 [laughter] - The secret is this-and with all of 00:25:58.22\00:26:01.12 my heart, I mean this- is I hope you always 00:26:01.19\00:26:04.49 have that attitude, 'cause any time you get to thinking 00:26:04.59\00:26:07.80 that, "Oh, I'm adequate; oh, I'm a good speaker," 00:26:07.90\00:26:12.77 then you quit relying on the Lord, and you might 00:26:12.87\00:26:15.10 give a good message but there's no anointing, 00:26:15.20\00:26:17.17 you know? That's... That is so important, because 00:26:17.87\00:26:22.31 that's God's whole plan of salvation is that we 00:26:22.38\00:26:25.41 learn to depend upon Him totally. That's what grace 00:26:25.51\00:26:28.75 is all about. During the video, you mentioned 00:26:28.85\00:26:33.09 something about Vacation Bible School in Kenya. Tell 00:26:33.15\00:26:36.16 us about that. - Okay! Well, during the whole 00:26:36.22\00:26:40.00 time we were doing construction, there were these two little boys 00:26:40.06\00:26:42.86 that would be on the other side of the fence, and they'd 00:26:42.96\00:26:46.60 be watching us. Towards the beginning of the VBS, 00:26:46.70\00:26:50.64 they came in and they would just watch, but 00:26:52.34\00:26:54.91 they wouldn't do anything. They wouldn't interact with 00:26:55.01\00:26:57.45 the songs or the crafts or anything; they just 00:26:57.51\00:26:59.98 wanted to watch. And then, the last day... - How old 00:27:00.05\00:27:03.65 were they, do you think? - Probably 8...12. - Okay. 00:27:03.72\00:27:08.39 - Somewhere in there. And they came in, and 00:27:08.49\00:27:12.43 they actually started to interact with the song 00:27:12.53\00:27:14.60 service, and they started doing the crafts and started 00:27:14.70\00:27:17.60 taking part, so... It was really neat to see. - Amen. 00:27:17.70\00:27:20.27 So, what was your biggest impact as far as spiritually 00:27:20.34\00:27:24.74 in going on the Kenya trip? - It was really 00:27:24.81\00:27:29.88 neat to see how simply they live and how content 00:27:29.98\00:27:34.18 they are with what they have, and it was also... 00:27:34.28\00:27:37.75 It was really neat to see how much of an impact I 00:27:37.85\00:27:40.42 can make on them, because, I mean, if I were just doing 00:27:40.52\00:27:45.43 some VBS in the States, they necessar- they 00:27:45.49\00:27:48.53 wouldn't really remember me or anything. But me 00:27:48.63\00:27:51.07 going over there and helping them made a big impact. There 00:27:51.13\00:27:54.37 was one girl that... I just talked with her 00:27:54.47\00:27:58.37 for a little bit; but towards the end, she started tearing 00:27:58.47\00:28:01.21 up, and she was like, "Don't forget me!" 00:28:01.34\00:28:04.31 And I'm like, "I won't!" It was really neat to 00:28:04.41\00:28:06.65 see how much I had impacted her even though I didn't feel 00:28:06.75\00:28:10.02 like I had done very much. - Yeah. Yeah. It's precious, 00:28:10.12\00:28:14.32 the people- they're so appreciative, aren't they? 00:28:14.49\00:28:17.89 You know, when you go somewhere, and especially 00:28:17.99\00:28:21.26 if it's an undeveloped area, they're just so 00:28:21.40\00:28:25.43 appreciative. So, for you, Justin, what was 00:28:25.53\00:28:29.17 the biggest impact of you going to Kenya? 00:28:29.27\00:28:32.67 - Like Venice said, it was so amazing to see 00:28:33.61\00:28:35.84 how the people who lived in such poverty could still 00:28:35.94\00:28:38.51 be happy and were still able to find joy in the 00:28:38.58\00:28:42.58 super small things. And in the States, you know, 00:28:42.68\00:28:44.72 we would feel like we'd be miserable. But just- 00:28:44.79\00:28:47.56 it was extremely eye-opening to see how content they were 00:28:47.66\00:28:50.49 there and how happy they were there. And also, just doing the 00:28:50.59\00:28:53.46 medical clinics and the dental clinics, just how- just a small 00:28:53.56\00:28:56.67 thing that in the States, we take for granted, you 00:28:56.73\00:28:58.70 know, having good dental care, good medical care, 00:28:58.80\00:29:01.00 how there, it's just life-changing for them 00:29:01.10\00:29:03.47 to have a tooth pulled or to have some medicine 00:29:03.54\00:29:07.31 given to them to help with disease and stuff, 00:29:07.41\00:29:09.54 where, here in the States, we just take it for granted; 00:29:09.61\00:29:12.25 but I think it really helped me realize how thankful I 00:29:12.31\00:29:15.52 need to be for the medical care that I have access to 00:29:15.62\00:29:20.96 here in the States. - Amen. I remember my first mission 00:29:21.02\00:29:23.46 trip; that's how I felt. We were preaching in 00:29:23.56\00:29:26.66 Mexico, and we went to a dump area. And what 00:29:26.73\00:29:31.93 city was that? - I think it was Monterrey. - Monterrey! 00:29:32.03\00:29:35.44 Monterrey, Mexico. We went to- I'd preached 00:29:35.54\00:29:38.47 in several churches, and the people were very 00:29:38.57\00:29:42.14 responsive. But then, the city looked like Los 00:29:42.24\00:29:45.21 Angeles! I mean, I was surprised; the city seemed 00:29:45.31\00:29:48.72 pretty modern. And then, we went out to minister 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.82 at the dump, and there was a whole community- 00:29:51.92\00:29:55.16 probably 60,000 people who lived in cardboard 00:29:55.26\00:29:58.89 lean-to's. They were so happy and content and visiting 00:29:59.03\00:30:05.57 out in the streets, and the kids were playing; 00:30:05.67\00:30:08.30 there weren't any locks on the doors-and they 00:30:08.37\00:30:11.01 were very excited to hear the Word of God. - It was 00:30:11.11\00:30:13.81 just amazing, because some of the sponsors 00:30:13.88\00:30:18.71 said, "You need to take some bags of candy, 'cause 00:30:18.85\00:30:21.02 the kids will love it." We took some bags of 00:30:21.12\00:30:22.85 can- they'd never seen candy before! - Oh, wow. 00:30:22.95\00:30:26.42 - Never seen candy before, and we just give 'em- 00:30:26.52\00:30:28.42 they didn't know what to do with it. Absolutely amazing! 00:30:28.49\00:30:31.79 Now, you talk about feeling about this size, because 00:30:31.89\00:30:35.50 here, you just chomp all the time. [laughter] - You're 00:30:35.56\00:30:39.50 telling on yourself. - I mean, something so immature, just 00:30:39.57\00:30:42.07 so small. Yeah. One thing that caught my attention 00:30:42.17\00:30:47.18 when you were speaking- and I think this is something 00:30:47.28\00:30:49.64 that we all need to be cognizant of-is that 00:30:49.74\00:30:52.18 divine appointments are going on all the time. Lots 00:30:52.25\00:30:56.08 of times, we just think it's an ordinary event 00:30:56.18\00:30:58.75 or an ordinary day or something insignificant, 00:30:58.85\00:31:01.59 but it's a divine appointment. So, we as being representative 00:31:01.69\00:31:05.59 for the kingdom-and this is basically what Weimar 00:31:05.69\00:31:08.43 Academy...this is a start; this is a training ground- 00:31:08.53\00:31:12.53 but if we just have that reality that maybe this is 00:31:13.23\00:31:17.57 God's orchestra. And so, we need to be alerted 00:31:17.64\00:31:21.41 all the time. Doing those things that are Christlike. 00:31:21.48\00:31:23.71 - This is a story from when we were there in Kenya: 00:31:25.25\00:31:28.02 on our first Sabbath, we got to a Maasai village. 00:31:28.12\00:31:30.89 We got to go to a one-day church that Maranatha had 00:31:30.99\00:31:34.42 built there a couple years before. When Maranatha 00:31:34.56\00:31:38.53 builds a one-day church, they generally just put 00:31:38.63\00:31:40.73 up a roof. And if the church wants to, they 00:31:40.80\00:31:43.43 can build the sides to the church. After 00:31:43.50\00:31:47.04 we left there at the church, the leader of our group found 00:31:47.14\00:31:50.11 out that, actually, how they built the sides to 00:31:50.21\00:31:52.17 the churches for over a year, every single family 00:31:52.27\00:31:55.81 that went to that church would miss one meal a 00:31:55.91\00:31:58.41 week, and the money from that meal went to pay for 00:31:58.51\00:32:02.25 the blocks to build the sides of the church. 00:32:02.35\00:32:04.49 - Wow. - And it was just so amazing to realize 00:32:04.59\00:32:07.02 that the church was their life. They sacrificed so 00:32:07.12\00:32:11.13 much to build and complete the church there. It just 00:32:11.23\00:32:15.36 really, really, really impacted me in such 00:32:15.46\00:32:17.20 an amazing way. - And it still had a dirt floor. 00:32:17.30\00:32:19.47 - Yeah, it still had a dirt floor, and they're still 00:32:19.53\00:32:21.27 working on improving it more and more by missing 00:32:21.37\00:32:24.37 out on one meal a week, where, here in the States, 00:32:24.51\00:32:27.38 we just don't really ever have to experience that, 00:32:27.48\00:32:29.54 and we're so blessed. - Amen! - And what a 00:32:29.64\00:32:31.61 testimony that is. - Yeah. - This reminds you of a 00:32:31.68\00:32:34.58 story, doesn't it? - Yeah; two things. One thing was 00:32:34.65\00:32:37.19 about this church that Maranatha tries to do is 00:32:37.29\00:32:39.29 they try to put a well in each of these churches 00:32:39.42\00:32:41.89 they build, and this church had a well. And one of the 00:32:41.99\00:32:44.89 biggest problems they have in Kenya with health 00:32:44.99\00:32:47.36 is the lack of good, clean water. You'll see people 00:32:47.43\00:32:50.67 getting water out of dirty creeks and they're carrying 00:32:50.77\00:32:53.20 it on buckets on their heads, and this is water 00:32:53.30\00:32:55.60 that they're drinking. You wouldn't even want 00:32:55.70\00:32:57.54 to wash your clothes in it, but yet this is what they're 00:32:57.64\00:32:59.54 using for drinking water. - Bless their hearts. - But 00:32:59.64\00:33:02.08 there is a miracle story that happened in Cuba- 00:33:02.14\00:33:05.25 and you mentioned divine appointments-and it 00:33:05.38\00:33:07.08 shows you how God is involved in everything. 00:33:07.15\00:33:10.35 And in one of the cities in Cuba, there was a 00:33:11.02\00:33:14.82 group that was there, and a man came by their house 00:33:14.92\00:33:18.96 and said, "You need to leave tomorrow." He 00:33:19.06\00:33:21.63 said, "You're violating our laws; what you're 00:33:21.70\00:33:23.63 doing is illegal. You can't be holding meetings here; 00:33:23.70\00:33:25.77 you need to come to the police station tomorrow," 00:33:25.87\00:33:28.00 which would've been Sabbath. "You need to come individually, 00:33:28.10\00:33:30.64 and we'll interrogate each one of you individually." 00:33:30.74\00:33:33.21 - So this was not just the hosts of the people 00:33:33.31\00:33:36.85 who owned the home, but the people who were there 00:33:36.95\00:33:38.91 ministering. - For our group that was there, 00:33:38.98\00:33:41.48 which was two staff and three students. "Come to 00:33:41.55\00:33:45.75 the police station tomorrow. You must come. I'm going to 00:33:45.85\00:33:48.06 call the central government, and they're going to have 00:33:48.12\00:33:49.92 you leave. You will leave tomorrow." So, they called 00:33:49.99\00:33:52.99 the leaders there in Cuba, and one of the leaders 00:33:53.03\00:33:55.40 called a gentleman and said, "You need to go 00:33:55.50\00:33:57.47 down there and take care of this problem tomorrow." 00:33:57.53\00:33:59.50 And he said, "I can't go; I don't have a car. My 00:33:59.60\00:34:01.54 car's broken." He said, "Rent a car. I'll pay for 00:34:01.64\00:34:04.21 it; you must go. You must not delegate this 00:34:04.27\00:34:06.57 to anybody else. You have to take care of it." 00:34:06.68\00:34:09.28 So this man rented a car, went there the next morning, 00:34:09.41\00:34:12.95 and as he walked up to this government building, 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.48 another official walked up, walked in beside him, and 00:34:15.55\00:34:18.89 he looked at this pastor and he said, "I know you!" 00:34:18.95\00:34:22.52 And the pastor said, "I don't think I know 00:34:22.59\00:34:24.49 you." He says, "Oh, no- I know you." He says, 00:34:24.59\00:34:26.93 "Well, how do you know me?" He said, "Well, 00:34:27.00\00:34:28.56 many years ago in this one city, we had come to 00:34:28.66\00:34:32.27 this house for a vacation, and all the rooms were 00:34:32.33\00:34:34.77 rented except for one. That one was not rented 00:34:34.90\00:34:36.97 because I had rented it from my family and my 00:34:37.04\00:34:38.91 15-year-old daughter's birthday. And while we 00:34:38.97\00:34:42.18 were in that house, you preached meetings, and 00:34:42.24\00:34:44.81 the meetings were on relationships, on marriage, 00:34:44.91\00:34:47.02 and all of these meetings I listened to..." And he 00:34:47.08\00:34:51.12 said, "It changed my life. And because of those 00:34:51.22\00:34:54.06 meetings," he said, "I have practiced everything." 00:34:54.12\00:34:56.62 - Praise God. - And he said, "You know what? 00:34:56.73\00:34:58.83 If this is your people that are here that I'm 00:34:58.93\00:35:01.63 coming down to check on," he said, "there'll be no 00:35:01.70\00:35:04.37 problem here today." He said, "I will call back the 00:35:04.47\00:35:06.80 central government and I will tell them there is no 00:35:06.87\00:35:09.20 issue here." And he said, "These people, if they're 00:35:09.30\00:35:12.84 you're people," he said, "you always pick the worst 00:35:12.94\00:35:15.84 in our communities and you change our people 00:35:15.94\00:35:18.71 that are thieves and people that are bad into good people." 00:35:18.88\00:35:21.82 - Oh, wow... - He said, "What you have to do, 00:35:21.92\00:35:23.89 going forward, is not only preach, but preach 00:35:23.99\00:35:26.79 as bold as you've ever preached before, so you 00:35:26.89\00:35:29.42 can change lives in this town." He said, "I came 00:35:29.52\00:35:32.03 here, but I came here as your protector." - Praise 00:35:32.09\00:35:34.96 the Lord! - "From thereforth," he said, "there'll be no issues 00:35:35.03\00:35:36.87 in this town." So, it shows you how God 00:35:36.97\00:35:39.60 and divine appointments God gives. He also said, 00:35:39.70\00:35:42.30 "When I walked up this morning, when I walked 00:35:42.40\00:35:44.54 in beside you, I felt a peace like I'd never 00:35:44.64\00:35:46.57 felt before. And then when I saw your face, 00:35:46.64\00:35:48.64 I knew why I had that peace, because you were 00:35:48.74\00:35:51.41 this man that had changed my life." - Praise God. 00:35:51.48\00:35:54.18 - So, it was just- well, I told her that story. 00:35:54.25\00:35:56.52 I was like, that is a God thing, because 00:35:56.58\00:35:58.85 there's no way that could've been orchestrated to walk 00:35:58.95\00:36:01.06 up at the exact time, and the exact people. I mean, 00:36:01.12\00:36:04.79 you could not even recreate it. It's just a miracle. 00:36:04.86\00:36:07.93 - Absolutely. We hear these stories, especially 00:36:08.06\00:36:10.80 from people who are going on mission trips. We hear 00:36:10.90\00:36:13.97 so many miracle stories. God is still in the miracle- 00:36:14.07\00:36:18.34 working business. But you know, you're talking 00:36:18.41\00:36:21.18 about how the things, the mission trips, and 00:36:21.28\00:36:25.81 the ministry you're doing, how God uses your efforts 00:36:25.91\00:36:29.18 to change lives, but I'm sitting here thinking about 00:36:30.05\00:36:32.72 the lives that are changed just by gaining this experience. 00:36:32.82\00:36:38.79 This is amazing to me, you know? If I had a 00:36:38.89\00:36:42.10 child- and unfortunately, we were not able. I wanted 00:36:42.20\00:36:45.23 6! JD thought I was crazy, but... [laughter] But! 00:36:45.33\00:36:49.70 If I had a child, the two most important 00:36:49.84\00:36:53.31 things, I think, that you can teach a child: 00:36:53.38\00:36:55.74 #1, I would teach them to the love of the Lord and 00:36:55.84\00:37:00.42 how to have a personal relationship with the Lord. 00:37:00.52\00:37:03.12 But the second thing is, teach them a good work 00:37:03.25\00:37:08.36 ethic, because you can be brilliant and fail at 00:37:08.46\00:37:12.06 life if you don't have a good work ethic. Your 00:37:12.19\00:37:14.93 daddy... - Yeah. My dad, he certainly taught us a 00:37:15.06\00:37:19.17 good work ethic. There are three of us kids, and 00:37:19.27\00:37:21.44 all three are very productive people, because we learned 00:37:21.54\00:37:24.61 early how to work and that that was just part of life. 00:37:24.74\00:37:28.98 I remember, my goodness, he'd make us go out there 00:37:29.11\00:37:32.08 and dig holes and just cover the holes back 00:37:32.21\00:37:34.05 up! [laughter] Now, you make some sense out of 00:37:34.15\00:37:36.05 that! But today... You know, none of us are 00:37:36.12\00:37:39.85 lazy, and we kind of look for things to do. 00:37:39.95\00:37:43.46 - You know, I think that's so important-having a 00:37:43.56\00:37:45.79 good work ethic. In fact, my girls, when they were 00:37:45.89\00:37:47.53 at Weimar, they were out working one day on the 00:37:47.63\00:37:50.87 grounds. And one of the men said, "Your daughters know how 00:37:50.97\00:37:52.93 to work!" And you know what? That makes you so 00:37:53.03\00:37:54.64 proud when your kids know how to work. And they came 00:37:54.77\00:37:57.47 home and I said, "Somebody said you know how to work." 00:37:57.54\00:37:59.41 And they said, "Dad, we don't work that hard." 00:37:59.47\00:38:01.18 So, the fact that they know how to work is a 00:38:01.28\00:38:03.18 blessing-just an amazing blessing just to know how 00:38:03.28\00:38:06.35 to work. You're absolutely right. - And as we're 00:38:06.45\00:38:07.88 listening here, not only are you learning bookwork, 00:38:07.95\00:38:11.15 but you're learning how to sweat, also. Perspire, 00:38:11.25\00:38:14.89 perhaps, is a better word. But in our days, it was... 00:38:14.96\00:38:18.63 But anyway, I think it's so important that you do 00:38:20.10\00:38:23.63 have a vocational program available. Now, how does 00:38:23.70\00:38:28.60 that work? You get up at 8 o'clock- you start 00:38:28.70\00:38:31.17 your classes at 8 o'clock... Is that right? - Yes. We 00:38:31.27\00:38:34.81 start our classes at 8, and we have our morning 00:38:34.88\00:38:36.91 worship, and then we go till 1 in our classes. And 00:38:36.98\00:38:39.41 then, we have vocational classes in the afternoon 00:38:39.48\00:38:42.48 if you signed up for that in the beginning of the year. 00:38:42.65\00:38:44.52 But everyone has a work education program; just 00:38:44.62\00:38:47.26 some of them are focused on more like one task. Like 00:38:47.36\00:38:49.82 for me, it's just flooring, so I'm not doing more 00:38:49.92\00:38:52.16 things in just flooring; I'm just doing flooring 00:38:52.26\00:38:54.70 so I can learn that trade for later on in life. - Amen. 00:38:54.80\00:38:57.73 - And everyone has a work program, so at Weimar, the 00:38:57.83\00:39:01.34 students all learn how to work and how to work hard 00:39:01.44\00:39:04.31 and get a good work ethic. - Amen. So in other words, 00:39:04.37\00:39:07.21 you're good to go to school, you get to work, 00:39:07.31\00:39:09.44 you get to go on mission trips, you get to be involved 00:39:09.54\00:39:12.88 with the neighborhood... - Yes. - What's the downside? 00:39:12.95\00:39:16.52 - I haven't found one yet. - You probably sleep good 00:39:17.72\00:39:20.22 at night, because you're tired. - Yeah. I haven't 00:39:20.32\00:39:23.59 found a downside yet. - Amen! - Well, you know, you're getting 00:39:23.69\00:39:26.53 a spiritual education, the academic education, and 00:39:27.86\00:39:31.63 then you're getting that good work ethic and learning 00:39:31.70\00:39:33.64 how to minister. But now, I don't think we've talked 00:39:33.74\00:39:36.67 about your choir tours yet. Tell us-somebody 00:39:36.77\00:39:39.37 jump in and tell me about that. - Well... [laughter] 00:39:39.54\00:39:44.31 Choir tour, we do it every year. Usually around 00:39:44.41\00:39:47.68 Christmas time, we'll plan to have a nice concert, 00:39:47.78\00:39:51.59 Christmas concert, and we'll go... Last this year 00:39:51.69\00:39:56.69 of 2018, we went down to SoCal, and we toured 00:39:56.79\00:40:03.47 all of the different churches down there. It was really 00:40:03.57\00:40:05.87 a blessing to sing to them. I love choir tours; I like to 00:40:05.93\00:40:09.44 sing, so it's just a blessing to bless others with our 00:40:09.54\00:40:13.34 singing. - Amen! There's a lot going on. You said... 00:40:13.44\00:40:17.78 - There IS a lot going on. - You said that the motto 00:40:17.91\00:40:20.98 for the academy was proving God right. Explain your motto. 00:40:21.08\00:40:27.52 - Well, I think that, kind of, the story is by when 00:40:27.62\00:40:31.79 we enter into a relationship with Christ, we see by following 00:40:31.86\00:40:35.56 what he's asked us to do that there are those divine 00:40:35.66\00:40:38.57 appointments as He leads our life. It's proving God 00:40:38.67\00:40:42.30 right, but it's basically- it's just experiencing what 00:40:42.40\00:40:45.37 God has in store for you... you know? I mean, when we 00:40:45.51\00:40:50.38 choose, like I mentioned, you know, when we have 00:40:50.48\00:40:53.31 a trial in our life, it's saying, "Lord, I'm going 00:40:53.38\00:40:56.55 to prove You through this trial. You said you want the 00:40:56.65\00:40:58.92 best good for me. I want to see what you have in 00:40:59.02\00:41:02.32 store for me to learn through this trial. So 00:41:02.42\00:41:04.79 even the trials can be such a great blessing. 00:41:04.89\00:41:07.66 Some of the biggest trials in my life have seen God, 00:41:07.76\00:41:10.53 and I'm saying, "God, I can trust You. I can trust 00:41:10.60\00:41:13.64 You through the trials." And that's what proving 00:41:13.74\00:41:15.44 God right's all about is experiencing that 00:41:15.50\00:41:18.04 He's good and that He has your best interest 00:41:18.17\00:41:20.04 at heart, even when it doesn't seem that way. 00:41:20.18\00:41:22.74 - He always has your eternal benefit in mind, 00:41:22.81\00:41:25.01 too. That's the most important thing. And 00:41:25.11\00:41:27.55 you know, that's something good, because I think you 00:41:27.65\00:41:30.45 are, as proving God right being the motto, it's so 00:41:30.55\00:41:35.06 important that you learn to experience what Kirk 00:41:35.16\00:41:39.03 was just saying is that- 'cause you know, you 00:41:39.13\00:41:41.50 see sometimes people whose faith you think is okay until 00:41:41.60\00:41:46.84 they have a major trial in their life, and then 00:41:46.97\00:41:50.07 they're like Chicken Little. "Oh, the sky 00:41:50.14\00:41:51.84 is falling; the sky is falling!" And you know, 00:41:51.91\00:41:55.28 this is when you got to- when trials come your 00:41:55.34\00:41:57.81 way, I know that God sees potential in us; 00:41:57.91\00:42:01.48 He allows us to go through trials. He doesn't stop them 00:42:01.58\00:42:04.22 all, because He kind of polishes the potential 00:42:04.32\00:42:07.16 in us, and we learn faith and trust and we grow! 00:42:07.22\00:42:12.39 But always remember Isaiah 26:3 that says-and God 00:42:12.46\00:42:18.67 says-that those who keep their eyes focused on Him, 00:42:18.73\00:42:23.47 trusting in Him, He will give perfect peace, even 00:42:23.54\00:42:27.04 in the midst of the trial! But now, you've got... 00:42:27.14\00:42:30.88 I don't know if you have a media department, but 00:42:31.01\00:42:34.48 I know that you guys are posting on YouTube. Tell 00:42:34.55\00:42:36.99 us about your YouTube channel. - Yeah, so 00:42:37.09\00:42:39.32 earlier in the year, we went on a men's and 00:42:39.42\00:42:41.72 women's retreat. And so the men, we went on a 00:42:41.82\00:42:44.89 rafting trip, and so we got to go down one of the rivers 00:42:45.03\00:42:48.83 there near Weimar and we... I think it was a 00:42:48.90\00:42:51.90 Class III rapids, and we went down there. It 00:42:51.97\00:42:54.20 was really fun. We got to... - Oh, call me next 00:42:54.30\00:42:56.30 time. I can't talk him into it. [laughter] 00:42:56.40\00:42:59.21 - We have some... We're in a beautiful area of 00:42:59.27\00:43:01.71 California. We have three rivers... Well, three 00:43:01.81\00:43:04.51 branches of the American River: the north, the 00:43:04.58\00:43:07.52 middle, and the south fork of the American 00:43:07.58\00:43:09.08 River. And the world-class rivers that are within 00:43:09.15\00:43:11.55 starting 15 minutes from Weimar Academy. - Wow. 00:43:11.65\00:43:14.92 - And so we have five rafts- six rafts at the academy? 00:43:15.02\00:43:18.53 we took the men and their fathers on a... 00:43:18.66\00:43:20.70 It was a great trip. - Yeah, it was a great bonding 00:43:20.80\00:43:23.00 experience; you know, we had to learn how 00:43:23.10\00:43:24.43 to work together, to maneuver the raft down 00:43:24.47\00:43:26.97 the rapids so you don't hit a rock or get stuck 00:43:27.04\00:43:30.34 in the middle of the river. [laughter] - Mention about 00:43:30.47\00:43:33.91 your GoPro. - Oh, yeah. So... - And how you found 00:43:33.98\00:43:36.81 it. That was a miracle in itself, to me. - Yeah. 00:43:36.91\00:43:39.28 So, when we were going down this river- no, the... 00:43:39.41\00:43:43.45 Yeah, so I was- not a GoPro, it's a drone. So, 00:43:43.52\00:43:46.12 I was filming the men's retreat with my drone, 00:43:46.22\00:43:49.72 and I was flying it, and I guess there was some 00:43:49.82\00:43:52.79 malfunction in the controls and it ended up going and 00:43:52.86\00:43:55.36 crashing into a tree on the side of the river. 00:43:55.46\00:43:57.50 We're going down this road and we can't just 00:43:57.60\00:43:59.10 stop and get it, because it wasn't... - Can't put 00:43:59.20\00:44:02.34 the breaks on! - Yeah, exactly. [laughter] The 00:44:02.40\00:44:04.67 water takes you where it wants to go. So, the 00:44:04.77\00:44:07.91 next day, I'm like, "Man, I probably won't be able 00:44:08.01\00:44:10.25 to find this drone." But the next day, a group 00:44:10.31\00:44:13.21 of guys and myself, we went out and... - Well, 00:44:13.31\00:44:16.08 Gary said, "I know the tree where it was in!" 00:44:16.18\00:44:18.42 - Yeah. So thankfully, one of the guides of one 00:44:18.52\00:44:21.46 of the boats there saw the drone crash, and 00:44:21.56\00:44:23.12 he knew exactly where it was. He's done this 00:44:23.22\00:44:24.73 river thousands of times, so he thought he knew 00:44:24.83\00:44:27.70 exactly where it was, but I was still kind of skeptical. 00:44:27.80\00:44:29.56 We went out there, and we prayed before we went and 00:44:29.66\00:44:31.93 tried to look for the drone. And we immediately- the 00:44:32.07\00:44:34.70 first tree we looked at, the drone was just right 00:44:34.80\00:44:36.74 there, and we were able to get it. It was just a 00:44:36.87\00:44:39.27 miracle. - That IS a miracle! [laughter] 00:44:39.37\00:44:41.74 - Yeah, I thought so, too. They said, "Can we go?" 00:44:41.84\00:44:43.45 and I'm like, I'm thinking, "You're wasting your time." 00:44:43.55\00:44:45.98 There's lots of trees, and these trees are bigger 00:44:47.42\00:44:48.95 trees, like maybe 80 ft tall, and there's lots of 00:44:49.05\00:44:52.05 trees; it's not like, just two or three trees; it's 00:44:52.12\00:44:54.52 lined with trees. - Yeah, so with the video: there's 00:44:54.62\00:44:58.53 a video about our motto and proving God right, and that's 00:44:58.59\00:45:01.46 on our YouTube channel. It's Weimar Academy. 00:45:01.53\00:45:04.77 If you search on Weimar Academy, "Proving God 00:45:04.87\00:45:07.14 right," the video is about what Weimar is 00:45:07.24\00:45:10.94 about, you know?-about proving God right, how we 00:45:11.04\00:45:13.48 can trust God through the trials and everything and 00:45:13.58\00:45:15.54 about the whole experience at Weimar Academy. - Okay, 00:45:15.64\00:45:18.55 so if we go to YouTube, then we search Weimar 00:45:18.58\00:45:22.12 Academy, do we need to put in "proving God right," 00:45:22.18\00:45:24.79 as well, or just...Weimar Academy? - You can put 00:45:24.89\00:45:27.12 Weimar Academy, and it should be the first video 00:45:27.19\00:45:28.72 to pop up there-under Weimar Academy. - Okay, 00:45:28.82\00:45:31.33 and that's W-E-I-M-A-R- Weimar Academy. - Yes. 00:45:31.39\00:45:35.66 - Where did the name come from? - Came back from 00:45:35.76\00:45:39.53 a group that was Weimar Indians- what is it? 00:45:39.63\00:45:41.74 - Yeah, there were some Indians there that went 00:45:41.84\00:45:43.64 by the name Weimar, and so when the Adventists 00:45:43.74\00:45:46.68 bought the property there, they wanted to keep the name 00:45:46.78\00:45:48.68 of the Native Americans and stuff. So, that's how 00:45:48.74\00:45:51.98 the name Weimar was established. It's not 00:45:52.11\00:45:54.85 named after Weimar, Germany; it's American Weimar there 00:45:54.92\00:45:59.55 in California. - While the guys were doing 00:45:59.65\00:46:01.96 this trip, we had set this up after the week 00:46:02.06\00:46:04.03 of prayer the following weekend at the fall 00:46:04.09\00:46:05.99 week of prayer of 2018. You might ask these young 00:46:06.06\00:46:08.90 ladies what they thought, 'cause we had them go on 00:46:08.96\00:46:10.77 a women's retreat. - And what did y'all do? - Well, 00:46:10.83\00:46:14.64 we had Amanda Anguish (she is a psychologist). 00:46:14.74\00:46:18.97 She came and talked to us about, kind of like, 00:46:19.07\00:46:21.44 relationships and how we should focus on a relationship 00:46:21.54\00:46:25.45 with God right now in our lives. We also had 00:46:25.51\00:46:30.79 a fun thing that we did; we had a tea party! So, 00:46:30.92\00:46:34.82 it was like the girl thing, and the guys went rafting. 00:46:34.89\00:46:37.33 So, it was fun! - That sounds just exactly the 00:46:37.43\00:46:42.03 difference between boys and girls, doesn't it? 00:46:42.16\00:46:44.60 [laughter] - We had a lot of girls that wanted 00:46:44.67\00:46:46.03 to take rafting. [laughter] - That's so wonderful. 00:46:46.10\00:46:51.17 - One thing that's caught my attention and that I 00:46:51.27\00:46:54.41 know here at 3ABN we appreciate so much is 00:46:54.51\00:46:56.95 that we start every day off with prayer. Prayer 00:46:57.05\00:46:59.55 is so important to our lives here at 3ABN, and 00:46:59.65\00:47:05.49 the first thing that you said- "This is the way we start 00:47:05.62\00:47:07.76 our day off; we start our day off with praying"- 00:47:07.86\00:47:10.46 and then, we slip in. Now, we've lost our 00:47:10.53\00:47:13.93 drone! First thing you do is you pray. I know 00:47:14.03\00:47:17.70 that there's many parents out there, that they would love 00:47:17.80\00:47:21.50 to hear that this is a praying school-to hear 00:47:21.60\00:47:25.04 the motto. Do you have a housing there, or is 00:47:25.11\00:47:31.31 this mostly for local- the high school... - It's 00:47:31.41\00:47:35.88 a boarding and a day school. So, we had 77 00:47:36.02\00:47:39.79 students, and I think it's split down the middle; 00:47:39.89\00:47:42.99 about half is boarding and about half is village. We 00:47:43.09\00:47:47.13 can accommodate, probably, I guess 45 students in the 00:47:47.23\00:47:50.37 dorms, and the rest is a lot of people in the 00:47:50.47\00:47:53.64 area, 'cause California- there's a lot of Adventists 00:47:53.74\00:47:55.07 in the area, so there are a lot of people who do 00:47:55.17\00:47:56.84 commute. - Okay, and I want to get one thing in. Our 00:47:56.94\00:47:59.57 time is beginning to run down. I know that when 00:47:59.67\00:48:02.64 you do these choir tours and things, you've got 00:48:02.74\00:48:06.18 a nice bus that you use! Relatively, a new bus- 00:48:06.21\00:48:12.49 newer than many places', and this would be a bus 00:48:12.62\00:48:15.72 that would be good anywhere in the United States except 00:48:15.79\00:48:19.69 California, because California's got some 00:48:19.83\00:48:22.76 very, very tight regulations. So, you're going to be forced 00:48:22.86\00:48:28.10 to sell this bus and purchase a new one in the next year 00:48:28.17\00:48:31.94 or so. - Yes, ours is a diesel bus, and it's a 00:48:32.04\00:48:35.91 Coach, but it will not comply with California 00:48:35.98\00:48:38.78 regulations in the next two years. So, we need 00:48:38.88\00:48:41.55 to sell that one to another state and purchase one 00:48:41.65\00:48:43.75 that will abide by California regulations. - Okay.
