My name 00:01:09.36\00:01:11.27 is John Lomacang. Thank you for taking the time 00:01:11.33\00:01:13.44 to tune in. If you are part of our 3ABN family, 00:01:13.50\00:01:16.81 you already know my name. But if you're 00:01:16.91\00:01:18.34 just tuning in for the first time, remember this 00:01:18.41\00:01:20.91 network- one we believe is ordained by God to 00:01:21.04\00:01:24.05 carry three angels' messages-an undiluted 00:01:24.11\00:01:27.22 message to the world to get the world and 00:01:27.28\00:01:29.85 God's people ready for His soon return. Today, 00:01:29.92\00:01:33.09 we have a very interesting program. Now, we live in 00:01:33.15\00:01:35.89 a day and age where health is a tremendous 00:01:35.96\00:01:38.36 issue, and some individuals are slaves 00:01:38.43\00:01:41.46 to the practices and habits of their lives 00:01:41.53\00:01:44.20 that sometimes seem irreversible. Well today, 00:01:44.27\00:01:47.57 our program and our guests are going to 00:01:47.64\00:01:48.97 talk about how nature, how natural remedies, 00:01:49.00\00:01:52.61 how things that we have sometimes often forgotten 00:01:52.67\00:01:55.38 about can make a difference in enhancing 00:01:55.44\00:01:57.88 our health and maybe sometimes reversing 00:01:57.98\00:01:59.81 things that we thought were not reversible. 00:01:59.91\00:02:02.08 And so, stay tuned for a very informative and 00:02:02.15\00:02:04.89 exciting program about health and how our lives 00:02:04.99\00:02:07.62 can be enhanced. We also want to thank you for 00:02:07.72\00:02:10.79 your prayers and your financial support of this 00:02:10.83\00:02:12.46 network as we believe we're going and growing, 00:02:12.49\00:02:14.86 getting ready for the coming of our Lord. 00:02:14.96\00:02:16.80 We're going to go right into our program today. 00:02:16.90\00:02:18.57 We're talking about Black Hills Health 00:02:18.63\00:02:20.27 and Education Center, located in the beautiful 00:02:20.37\00:02:23.67 hills of South Dakota. Our guests today- 00:02:23.74\00:02:26.68 we're going to have a total of six guests on 00:02:26.74\00:02:28.71 our program, but we're going to meet the first 00:02:28.74\00:02:30.85 three right now. First of all, good to have 00:02:30.91\00:02:33.45 you here, Sylvia. For our audience, those 00:02:33.52\00:02:36.85 watching and listening to the program, tell us 00:02:36.89\00:02:38.95 who you are, where you're from, and 00:02:38.99\00:02:40.76 briefly, what you do right now. - My name 00:02:40.82\00:02:42.62 is Sylvia Malott Small. I'm from the Black Hills 00:02:42.72\00:02:44.93 of South Dakota, and currently, I'm president 00:02:44.99\00:02:47.30 of the Black Hills Health and Education Center. It's 00:02:47.36\00:02:49.93 a place where God put me, and a wonderful 00:02:50.00\00:02:52.63 place to be. - Wonderful; good to have you here 00:02:52.70\00:02:54.14 today. And our guest in the middle, I know 00:02:54.24\00:02:56.47 you very well. Al, good to see you again. - You 00:02:56.54\00:02:58.87 too, John. - Yeah, I remember when you 00:02:58.97\00:03:00.31 were at Broadview Academy. So good to 00:03:00.38\00:03:04.31 have you here today. Al Trace- I'll just 00:03:04.41\00:03:06.68 say that because we go back a ways; but tell 00:03:06.78\00:03:08.98 us what you do at Black Hills and what 00:03:09.05\00:03:11.29 capacity you serve there right now. - I'm 00:03:11.35\00:03:13.29 the director of the School of Massage 00:03:13.39\00:03:15.42 Therapy at Black Hills. We are actually the 00:03:15.52\00:03:18.89 only Christian massage school in the country. 00:03:18.99\00:03:21.26 We're excited about that. - Okay! Well, I'll be 00:03:21.36\00:03:24.10 coming to see you. - Good. - Good to have 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.10 you here today. And Dr. John Kelly, so good 00:03:26.17\00:03:29.40 to have you here today. You've been to 3ABN 00:03:29.47\00:03:30.97 before; but for those who have not met you 00:03:31.07\00:03:33.51 before, tell us what you do right now and 00:03:33.58\00:03:35.28 what capacity you are at Black Hills. - Thank 00:03:35.38\00:03:38.11 you. Yes, I'm John Kelly; I work at the Black Hills 00:03:38.21\00:03:41.32 in doing lifestyle medicine training and 00:03:41.38\00:03:45.19 also researching some of the outcomes of the 00:03:45.25\00:03:48.26 patients. So, my work has grown to where I 00:03:48.32\00:03:52.19 work with other centers, as well, just recently 00:03:52.29\00:03:55.23 at Weimar. So, I'm doing lifestyle medicine training. 00:03:55.33\00:03:58.10 - Good. Good to have you all here today. 00:03:58.17\00:04:00.60 You know, when we think about health, right now 00:04:00.67\00:04:03.14 one of the crises in America (and I think in many parts 00:04:03.24\00:04:05.71 of the world) is health. Healthcare costs are 00:04:05.81\00:04:09.68 continuing to skyrocket. Pharmaceutical drugs... 00:04:09.78\00:04:12.81 That's an industry that's just multiple 00:04:12.91\00:04:14.95 billion dollar industry- maybe trillions if you think 00:04:15.02\00:04:17.12 on a worldwide scale. But Black Hills has 00:04:17.95\00:04:20.66 taken a spot in the work that God has ordained 00:04:20.72\00:04:23.99 them to do. So, I want to begin with you, Sylvia, 00:04:24.13\00:04:26.19 president of the Black Hills Health and Education 00:04:26.26\00:04:29.23 Center. Give us some background on Black 00:04:29.33\00:04:32.03 Hills. Tell us a little bit about the center and how 00:04:32.10\00:04:34.74 long it's been there and what capacities 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.24 and what functions it has. - Well, it's interesting 00:04:36.34\00:04:39.41 you said "a spot." God has given us a beautiful 00:04:39.47\00:04:43.24 spot in Black Hills. More than 40 years 00:04:43.35\00:04:46.45 ago, some of our founders found out firsthand how 00:04:46.51\00:04:51.35 lifestyle medicine could change through a family 00:04:51.42\00:04:53.12 member of theirs who had very severe health 00:04:53.19\00:04:55.52 problems. She's still alive today, but she 00:04:55.59\00:04:57.76 went to, then, existing healthcare lifestyle 00:04:57.86\00:05:00.96 center. They felt a burden that they 00:05:01.03\00:05:04.20 wanted to open and make such a center available 00:05:04.27\00:05:06.53 in Mid-America and South Dakota area. 00:05:06.60\00:05:09.74 They found this 260 acres- beautiful-it's in the 00:05:09.80\00:05:12.87 canyon, and so the road dead-ends where 00:05:12.94\00:05:16.18 the center is in this canyon. It starts wide 00:05:16.24\00:05:17.88 and it goes narrower. We have a year-round creek 00:05:17.95\00:05:20.48 called Battle Creek, of all things, that runs 00:05:20.55\00:05:23.72 through it. It's just an absolutely gorgeous, 00:05:23.79\00:05:27.69 peaceful place with the birds and animals. It's 00:05:27.79\00:05:30.73 a wonderful location to come and recover in 00:05:30.83\00:05:33.09 God's nature. And for 40 years, the center 00:05:33.16\00:05:35.60 has been doing lifestyle medicine, live-in programs 00:05:35.66\00:05:38.40 where people come and they spend approximately 00:05:38.50\00:05:41.60 3 weeks there for the full program where they're 00:05:41.67\00:05:44.04 changing their habits and learning how to live 00:05:44.11\00:05:46.24 according to the eight natural laws that's 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.81 found in the Bible: proper diet and exercise 00:05:48.84\00:05:50.95 and air and water and all of that. So, we're 00:05:51.01\00:05:53.42 just privileged to have this most beautiful location 00:05:53.52\00:05:56.12 and have been there all these years, and we're 00:05:56.22\00:05:58.99 just looking forward to, as we're expanding our 00:05:59.05\00:06:02.26 programs and we've got these great plans of 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.19 things, how we're going to continue by God's 00:06:04.26\00:06:07.00 grace and with His blessings, continue 00:06:07.06\00:06:08.56 to grow and be able to minister to people to 00:06:08.63\00:06:10.73 help them improve their lives, and in doing so, 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.03 also learn about the God who created them 00:06:13.13\00:06:15.04 and loves them a lot so they can have eternal 00:06:15.10\00:06:16.94 life. - I went to Black Hills- my wife and I 00:06:17.04\00:06:19.47 went there. I was invited, actually, not to be a part 00:06:19.57\00:06:21.68 of the program, but I was invited to do a 00:06:21.71\00:06:23.04 Week of Prayer, some spiritual talks, every 00:06:23.08\00:06:25.41 day. But while being there, I benefited from 00:06:25.51\00:06:28.68 really, really good food. I didn't think 00:06:28.72\00:06:32.45 food could taste so good when you take away all 00:06:32.52\00:06:34.42 the paraphernalia that we add to it. You know, 00:06:34.49\00:06:36.89 a lot of the time, we eat salad, but there's 00:06:36.96\00:06:38.29 so many things on top of the salad. I was asking 00:06:38.33\00:06:41.66 so many questions. "Well, where is this?" You said, 00:06:41.76\00:06:43.47 "Oh, no-we don't have that, but use this instead." 00:06:43.53\00:06:46.13 And I thought, "Salad? Where are all my extra 00:06:46.23\00:06:48.90 external dressings that I pour on it?" And after 00:06:48.97\00:06:52.37 about one day, I thought, "Wow, that cucumber 00:06:52.44\00:06:56.28 tastes like a cucumber! That carrot tastes like a 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.21 carrot!" And a lot of times, people live their 00:06:58.31\00:07:00.92 lives and they don't actually focus on healthy 00:07:01.02\00:07:03.45 eating. A lot of things that we are suffering 00:07:03.52\00:07:06.15 with can be remedied and well on our way to 00:07:06.25\00:07:09.22 maybe lowering our blood pressure or dealing with 00:07:09.32\00:07:12.39 cholesterol...some of the things that are 00:07:12.49\00:07:14.30 lifestyle-related. And Dr. Kelly, we'll talk 00:07:14.36\00:07:16.73 about that a little bit more. But I appreciate 00:07:16.80\00:07:18.67 Black Hills. Every morning we woke up, one thing we 00:07:18.77\00:07:21.57 were assured of: nice, crisp air, clean, blue 00:07:21.64\00:07:25.67 skies, and instead of driving from our lodge 00:07:25.77\00:07:31.35 to the center, we walked. And every day, we felt 00:07:31.41\00:07:34.38 good. After about four days, my wife and I 00:07:34.45\00:07:36.52 said, "You know, maybe we ought to come up here 00:07:36.62\00:07:38.22 and do this program. We could- doing the 00:07:38.29\00:07:40.12 wades, and they took us on the long afternoon 00:07:40.22\00:07:42.22 walks. Beautiful, beautiful center. Those of you 00:07:42.32\00:07:45.36 watching, listening to the program, we'll 00:07:45.46\00:07:46.83 give you information at the end on how you 00:07:46.90\00:07:48.93 can participate and maybe find out how to 00:07:49.00\00:07:51.10 get to be a part of the Black Hills Center. Thank 00:07:51.17\00:07:53.87 you for laying that foundation. So, you 00:07:53.94\00:07:56.17 have people- Al, you've been there now for not 00:07:56.27\00:07:59.74 too long, but tell us about this. You introduced 00:07:59.81\00:08:01.74 a moment ago Christian Massage Center. Tell us 00:08:01.84\00:08:05.55 more about that. - Well, the massage school actually 00:08:05.61\00:08:09.35 started back in the 1990s before licensure was required. 00:08:09.38\00:08:13.59 Then in 2007, the state of South Dakota required 00:08:14.26\00:08:17.83 state licensure if you were going to teach 00:08:19.46\00:08:21.93 an accredited program- certificated program. 00:08:22.00\00:08:25.90 So, in 2007, the program started as a licensed 00:08:26.00\00:08:29.84 program. And since then, we've had a number of 00:08:29.94\00:08:32.41 students. It's really challenging today; there 00:08:32.47\00:08:36.21 are a lot of Christians- and in our case, we have 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.41 a lot of Adventist Christians coming through 00:08:38.51\00:08:39.95 the program-that can find a place to study without 00:08:40.02\00:08:43.72 getting into the all of the Eastern modalities. 00:08:43.82\00:08:46.12 Most schools today teach energy work, 00:08:47.32\00:08:49.12 which we don't. We try to be more evidence-based. 00:08:49.22\00:08:52.83 We've just been really blessed. Every class 00:08:52.89\00:08:58.73 becomes a blessing to us. Yeah. We've got a special 00:08:58.83\00:09:04.81 program starting in the next few months, and 00:09:04.87\00:09:07.74 we normally average anywhere from 6 to 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.68 10 students, which is a good number for us. 00:09:09.78\00:09:12.55 - So, you're teaching them to do... - We're 00:09:12.65\00:09:14.58 teaching them. And then they are eligible to get 00:09:14.65\00:09:16.99 state licensure in whatever state they're 00:09:17.05\00:09:19.12 living in by taking the national exam. - Wonderful. 00:09:19.15\00:09:21.42 - And at this point in time, we have over a 00:09:21.49\00:09:22.99 99% pass-rate on the national exam since the 00:09:23.06\00:09:26.93 school started, which is exciting. - You know, 00:09:27.00\00:09:29.73 I remember years ago- my wife and I, what we 00:09:29.80\00:09:31.67 do is when we travel, sometimes we take long 00:09:31.73\00:09:33.77 flights. 14 hours- I remember going to Australia 00:09:33.87\00:09:35.80 once, and we were in the very back of the 00:09:35.94\00:09:37.37 in United Airlines, and we vowed never to sit 00:09:37.44\00:09:41.28 all the way in the back where the tail is continually 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.68 bumping. And the first question they asked us 00:09:42.74\00:09:44.98 when we landed, they said, "What would you 00:09:45.05\00:09:46.38 like to do first?" We said, "Could you take 00:09:46.41\00:09:48.15 us to the mall? We need a massage." Many 00:09:48.22\00:09:51.15 people don't realize the therapeutic nature 00:09:51.22\00:09:53.66 of a massage. But to learn it the way that you talked 00:09:53.76\00:09:58.99 about-I like the fact that you talked 00:09:59.06\00:10:00.40 about you don't get into the Eastern modalities- 00:10:00.43\00:10:03.16 you're not getting into all the discussions that 00:10:03.26\00:10:06.70 sometimes intend to lean on New Age ideology 00:10:06.80\00:10:09.44 but just to healing of the body. - There 00:10:10.27\00:10:12.24 are a lot of challenges besides therapists today. 00:10:12.31\00:10:14.44 It's becoming just heavily involved-the Eastern 00:10:14.54\00:10:18.38 modalities are becoming heavily involved in massage 00:10:18.48\00:10:20.92 therapy. And so, we speak to the students 00:10:21.02\00:10:26.15 a lot about that. You've really got to be firm, 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.22 you've got to understand what you believe, understand 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.46 what is the appropriate modalities to use... 00:10:30.56\00:10:34.33 There are a number of modalities that are 00:10:35.76\00:10:38.90 very heavily involved in mysticism and Eastern 00:10:38.97\00:10:42.90 techniques. - Wow. - And so, yeah. It's great. 00:10:43.00\00:10:46.57 The first week of the program, we have a 00:10:46.68\00:10:49.21 week-long biblical response therapy training for our 00:10:49.28\00:10:51.85 students, which they all love. It sets the 00:10:51.91\00:10:54.92 tone for the program. We get a number of 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.55 students every year and at every session that 00:10:58.65\00:11:00.66 found us on the web. - Okay. - And I said, 00:11:00.76\00:11:04.59 "How did you find us?" "We just googled Christian 00:11:04.69\00:11:06.59 massage school." - Okay, wonderful. - And it's pretty 00:11:06.66\00:11:09.43 exciting that we've got some coming this next 00:11:09.56\00:11:12.87 year from Ohio, Maryland, California-from all over 00:11:12.97\00:11:19.14 the country, basically. - Wow, wonderful. You 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.48 know, just before I get to Dr. John Kelly, I want 00:11:21.58\00:11:23.41 to show a couple of pictures, because we've 00:11:23.48\00:11:25.78 bragged about how beautiful it is in 00:11:25.85\00:11:27.18 Black Hills that I think people should be able 00:11:27.25\00:11:29.08 to see-those who are watching-should be 00:11:29.18\00:11:31.02 get at least a glimpse of what it looks like 00:11:31.09\00:11:32.75 in the Black Hills. We'll walk through a couple 00:11:32.82\00:11:34.16 of pictures, then tell us what we're watching. 00:11:34.29\00:11:35.62 - Well, this is just the natural beauty around 00:11:36.32\00:11:38.93 us, and then we're going to see. The 00:11:39.03\00:11:41.10 next one will be the lifestyle center. This 00:11:41.20\00:11:43.73 is our lifestyle center building...another view 00:11:43.80\00:11:47.10 from it during summertime. - Wow. - That's what it's 00:11:47.20\00:11:50.64 like most of the time; although, we do occasionally 00:11:50.74\00:11:53.74 get some white stuff. This is employee housing 00:11:53.84\00:11:57.35 and then student housing and guest housing- 00:11:57.45\00:11:59.55 non-lifestyle guest housing. But it's to 00:11:59.61\00:12:02.08 say, it does sometimes be winter. This is- that's 00:12:02.15\00:12:05.45 the Battle Creek I was talking about. It's a year-round 00:12:05.52\00:12:07.52 creek. This is just our beautiful valley and our 00:12:07.59\00:12:10.86 beautiful Battle Creek. The hikes you can take 00:12:10.96\00:12:14.26 and everything are superb. I do believe that is one 00:12:14.33\00:12:18.20 of God's ways of healing is getting out in the fresh 00:12:18.30\00:12:20.97 air and experiencing the calm peacefulness 00:12:21.07\00:12:25.87 of nature. At night, you can open your 00:12:25.97\00:12:27.78 window and you can hear the creek 'cause there's 00:12:27.84\00:12:30.01 no other sounds. I mean, it just really is an escape 00:12:30.08\00:12:33.58 from the world to come and rest and recover 00:12:33.65\00:12:36.55 your spirit as well as your body. - As a young 00:12:36.65\00:12:39.95 man raised in New York City, I understand exactly 00:12:40.06\00:12:42.49 what you mean. When we open the window in New 00:12:42.59\00:12:44.39 York, we hear cars and tires screeching and 00:12:44.49\00:12:47.43 any number of sounds- music and all. But my 00:12:47.50\00:12:49.90 wife and I now live out here where we open the 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.47 door of- if we hear sounds at night, we know it's got 00:12:52.57\00:12:54.30 to be the raccoon going for the bird food. - Right. 00:12:54.34\00:12:57.11 - There's always some kind of- maybe the 00:12:57.21\00:12:58.64 possum eating out of the pan, or the groundhog 00:12:58.71\00:13:01.21 comes up during the day and looks in the 00:13:01.31\00:13:02.64 window while we're there and say, "Did you forget 00:13:02.68\00:13:04.15 to put my food out today?" And so, nature 00:13:04.25\00:13:06.35 is a beautiful healing method, and God has 00:13:06.45\00:13:08.58 really wrapped Black Hills in a wonderful 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.92 setting, which really is good for people that 00:13:10.99\00:13:13.15 need medical help...which is a good segue to Dr. 00:13:13.25\00:13:17.53 Kelly. Dr. Kelly, good to have you here. - Good 00:13:17.59\00:13:19.79 to be with you. - Remind us- actually, walk us 00:13:19.89\00:13:22.80 down some of the things that you participate in 00:13:22.93\00:13:25.30 at the Black Hills Health and Education Center. 00:13:25.37\00:13:27.84 - Sure. But before I- let me just say one 00:13:27.94\00:13:29.74 thing. Having been the medical director there 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.24 for a couple of years, it's so good to have 00:13:32.34\00:13:35.18 the massage students there. They're there 00:13:35.28\00:13:37.38 for about six months, and they are good Christian 00:13:37.45\00:13:41.92 young people, although we have some mature 00:13:41.98\00:13:43.89 students now, and it's such a wonderful influence 00:13:43.95\00:13:46.42 on the campus. It really does add an element 00:13:46.52\00:13:50.89 that makes it fun to be there. But anyway, 00:13:50.96\00:13:52.89 to your question- so, when the Lord brought 00:13:52.96\00:13:58.53 me and my wife there to Black Hills about 00:13:58.60\00:14:01.40 three-and-a-half years ago, there was a need 00:14:01.47\00:14:03.81 for a physician, and there had been a really 00:14:03.91\00:14:08.48 robust program; but through some change in 00:14:08.54\00:14:12.51 personnel, we had to sort of rebuild. It was 00:14:12.58\00:14:16.58 a real blessing to me and to my wife. She 00:14:16.65\00:14:19.85 actually does the accounting on campus. 00:14:19.92\00:14:21.96 We began by establishing a program that was built 00:14:24.23\00:14:29.76 around an accredited curriculum so that we 00:14:29.86\00:14:33.37 were able to offer training for physicians. 00:14:33.44\00:14:36.44 So, I was involved in starting the American 00:14:37.51\00:14:40.24 College of Lifestyle Medicine years ago, 00:14:40.31\00:14:42.14 and that has really grown tremendously; 00:14:42.24\00:14:44.85 there's about 2,500 or so members now. The thing 00:14:44.91\00:14:48.95 that the physicians who want to practice these 00:14:49.02\00:14:51.79 lifestyle change approaches to treatment, the problem 00:14:51.89\00:14:56.02 is that there's no training; they don't know. You have 00:14:56.09\00:15:00.00 to figure this out on your own, and many 00:15:00.03\00:15:03.30 doctors have done that- and nurses. But the demand 00:15:03.37\00:15:06.63 has been growing, and now we have practically 00:15:06.70\00:15:10.21 every- well, actually, every program that I work with now at 00:15:10.31\00:15:13.01 Black Hills, we have physicians or physician assistants or 00:15:13.07\00:15:17.08 some medical professional involved there to get training. 00:15:17.18\00:15:20.72 So, the focus that has grown- when I first 00:15:22.75\00:15:25.79 came, it was building the program using credible 00:15:25.85\00:15:28.92 curriculum. Now, it's actually training physicians 00:15:29.02\00:15:31.93 and other professionals. There at Black Hills, already, 00:15:31.99\00:15:36.00 I believe, we've trained somewhere above a dozen; 00:15:36.06\00:15:38.50 I don't know the exact number - 12-15 physicians. 00:15:38.57\00:15:41.70 The thing that I see happening- you know, 00:15:41.77\00:15:46.21 Sylvia mentioned that we started 40 years or 00:15:46.27\00:15:49.11 so ago. You know, I'm considered privileged. I knew Dr. Beltz, 00:15:49.14\00:15:53.15 who was one of the founders; he was the 00:15:53.21\00:15:55.12 main physician in the program back then. A 00:15:55.18\00:15:58.05 real- talk about high energy. You know, bless 00:15:58.12\00:16:00.89 your heart. You have high energy, but Dr. 00:16:00.92\00:16:02.62 Beltz makes us all look kind of feeble. He was 00:16:02.69\00:16:05.13 very high-energy. But in that 40 years, things 00:16:05.19\00:16:09.26 have changed, and now... Actually, it's a good thing 00:16:09.33\00:16:12.80 that physicians in their practices are wanting 00:16:12.87\00:16:15.60 to help their patients make lifestyle changes: 00:16:15.67\00:16:18.71 to change their diet, to leave off the foods 00:16:18.77\00:16:21.24 that are harmful, and so on. I mean, we know, 00:16:21.28\00:16:23.24 for example, that the way we eat has more 00:16:23.28\00:16:26.41 effect on our gene switches turning on 00:16:26.48\00:16:28.75 the healthy genes, if you will, and turning 00:16:28.78\00:16:30.82 off the unhealthy ones, than anything that science 00:16:30.89\00:16:33.36 has discovered. I mean, there's a whole field 00:16:33.39\00:16:35.56 called nutrigenomics built around the idea 00:16:35.62\00:16:38.19 that a specific nutrient can be discovered that 00:16:38.26\00:16:42.00 switches on or off a certain type of disease 00:16:42.10\00:16:44.93 genes. This is a very complex science, but 00:16:45.03\00:16:49.50 the point I'm making is simply that how we live, 00:16:49.54\00:16:52.41 we now know, affects our gene switches. 00:16:52.47\00:16:54.91 It adds a depth of significance. It's 00:16:54.98\00:17:00.02 way more than just trying to lose some 00:17:00.08\00:17:01.58 weight or trying to clear up our blood 00:17:01.65\00:17:05.25 vessels. Actually, we can change the gene 00:17:05.35\00:17:08.46 switches and dramatically change ourselves and our 00:17:08.56\00:17:12.43 body. So, that science has convinced and is 00:17:12.49\00:17:16.06 convincing regular physicians that, "Yes, this is science- 00:17:16.16\00:17:21.24 based. I need to learn it." But where? Where 00:17:21.30\00:17:24.41 do they learn it? So I'm excited that I 00:17:24.47\00:17:27.08 also had the privilege of being the lead author 00:17:27.14\00:17:29.71 of the board review course for physicians 00:17:29.81\00:17:32.78 who can take their boards; just like 00:17:32.85\00:17:35.78 taking the massage school board, you take a board 00:17:35.85\00:17:38.12 in lifestyle medicine. So, that's really the 00:17:38.25\00:17:40.86 main thing that I work on, and the Lord opened 00:17:40.96\00:17:43.36 that door since I've been there at Black 00:17:43.46\00:17:46.53 Hills. - You know, the amazing thing about that- 00:17:46.59\00:17:48.26 I'm listening to the switches point. That's 00:17:48.33\00:17:50.80 why, a lot of times, we program our bodies 00:17:50.87\00:17:53.20 to expect certain things. I know the first time- 00:17:53.23\00:17:56.47 and I've seen somebody do this once. A little 00:17:56.57\00:17:58.97 baby... A parent put a little olive, like, a 00:17:59.04\00:18:04.08 little green olive on their tongue, and the 00:18:04.15\00:18:05.78 baby's head almost shrunk to half the 00:18:05.81\00:18:07.15 size. 'Cause it was so sour, they went... 00:18:07.18\00:18:09.62 But I would say that introduction was so 00:18:10.75\00:18:14.56 sour, the baby hadn't had any database of 00:18:14.62\00:18:17.76 that taste before, and it just really shocked the 00:18:17.83\00:18:20.53 child. And sugar could do the same thing, and 00:18:20.60\00:18:24.20 the body starts to chronicle all these 00:18:24.27\00:18:26.03 tastes, and you're turning certain switches 00:18:26.10\00:18:28.77 on and certain switches off. And then all of a 00:18:28.87\00:18:31.01 sudden, you build this taste expectation that 00:18:31.07\00:18:33.24 your body's now longing for and expecting and 00:18:33.38\00:18:35.84 craving. So then what I'm hearing you say is, we could 00:18:35.94\00:18:40.02 retrain our bodies by resetting those switches 00:18:40.05\00:18:43.39 and turning on the right switches. Am I kind of 00:18:43.49\00:18:45.79 going along the same path? - No, no-exactly. 00:18:45.89\00:18:47.69 Actually, there are two dimensions to it. There 00:18:47.72\00:18:50.43 is that taste that we develop for certain 00:18:50.46\00:18:53.03 things; but then there's another aspect, and that 00:18:53.13\00:18:55.90 is depending on what our regular diet is 00:18:55.96\00:18:59.03 affects the switches. So, it's not the one-time 00:18:59.13\00:19:03.14 taste, but it's the habitual... - Retraining. 00:19:03.24\00:19:06.24 - Yes. But it's a very similar kind of thing. 00:19:06.31\00:19:08.48 Well, actually, you know, we do have the ability 00:19:08.58\00:19:11.91 to- our taste buds've been shown with biochemistry, with 00:19:11.95\00:19:16.18 science, that they change in response to the choices 00:19:16.25\00:19:19.82 I make in my food. So, if I decide I want to 00:19:19.89\00:19:21.99 go ahead and eat that sour olive, I will develop 00:19:22.06\00:19:25.33 a taste for these green olives. If I decide I want 00:19:25.39\00:19:29.83 to eat candy bars, I will develop a taste, 00:19:29.86\00:19:32.40 and that's what you're driving- you get this 00:19:32.47\00:19:34.04 habitual desire. I tell people, "You do not just 00:19:34.10\00:19:39.21 inherit genes from your parents; you inherit 00:19:39.27\00:19:42.41 recipes." [laughter] - That's a good one. 00:19:42.48\00:19:45.85 Yeah. Your body is, in some sense... What's 00:19:46.58\00:19:50.45 the phrase that's used? Hereditary? - Yes. 00:19:50.52\00:19:52.55 - Hereditary things are often communicated that 00:19:52.65\00:19:55.52 if you practice, it becomes cultivated. 00:19:55.62\00:19:57.69 - Correct. We think that we inherit, for 00:19:57.76\00:20:00.06 example, a taste for meat; but in reality, 00:20:00.10\00:20:03.97 there's a lot of cultivation to that, 00:20:04.03\00:20:06.43 and we can change that choice. - Mm. And even- 00:20:06.50\00:20:09.77 I'm learning that even certain smells, like if 00:20:09.84\00:20:12.91 somebody is cooking certain things, it'll 00:20:13.01\00:20:14.61 bring out an expectation, because you smell something 00:20:14.71\00:20:17.88 that you could associate taste with, and it just- 00:20:17.95\00:20:21.35 you know, the taste buds- and it starts 00:20:21.42\00:20:22.85 watering, you say, "It's almost lunchtime," 00:20:22.92\00:20:25.22 or, "I hope it's almost lunchtime." But I was 00:20:25.29\00:20:27.52 there at the Black Hills, and I really appreciated- 00:20:27.59\00:20:29.76 we're going to talk about this in the second half of 00:20:29.82\00:20:31.63 the program-the diet, the food; all those things 00:20:31.69\00:20:34.13 that really are significantly part of the program, of all 00:20:34.20\00:20:37.10 the curriculum that you offer, the massage, 00:20:37.20\00:20:40.30 retuning the body- and I tell you, Al- 00:20:40.37\00:20:43.51 very few people understand the importance of a body in 00:20:43.57\00:20:47.84 tune. My wife and I, we can tell. When we've 00:20:47.91\00:20:50.45 driven too long, we can tell we gotta get ourselves 00:20:50.51\00:20:54.22 adjusted, go to a good chiropractor...and then, 00:20:54.32\00:20:57.09 food! When we went to the Black Hills, one thing 00:20:57.19\00:20:59.92 we noticed after about three days-and I think 00:20:59.99\00:21:02.39 it's the food-we were less tired. We went to 00:21:02.46\00:21:05.99 bed earlier, we walked in the morning, we breathed 00:21:06.09\00:21:10.60 clean air, and we were less tired. I thought, 00:21:10.67\00:21:14.44 "Why am I so tired when I go back home?" And I 00:21:14.47\00:21:17.34 realized, it's not activity; sometimes, it's environment 00:21:17.41\00:21:19.87 and the things we put in our bodies. What else 00:21:19.94\00:21:22.48 do you want to add to that? - I just want to 00:21:22.54\00:21:23.98 add to it- Dr. Kelly said- 'cause it's 00:21:24.08\00:21:25.71 such an incredible point. We're told, "You should 00:21:25.78\00:21:28.05 know the truth and the truth shall set you free." 00:21:28.12\00:21:29.88 We are not slaves to our genetics! People 00:21:29.98\00:21:33.22 say, "I was born this way. I was born with 00:21:33.32\00:21:36.36 propensity towards heart disease," or obesity or 00:21:36.42\00:21:39.59 anything else. And what Dr. Kelly expresses in 00:21:39.69\00:21:41.96 his lectures-I loved his lecture-was that 00:21:42.06\00:21:44.53 we can change those switches. We might 00:21:44.63\00:21:47.27 have that DNA, but how- and it's not just food. 00:21:47.34\00:21:50.41 It is your whole lifestyle. I mean, the way that you 00:21:50.47\00:21:53.17 stress or don't stress- all components of it. 00:21:53.24\00:21:55.54 That's why you can't just dwell on the food, 00:21:55.61\00:21:57.45 but all components of it. And what Dr. Kelly 00:21:57.51\00:21:59.51 did when we started off our session-one of the 00:21:59.58\00:22:01.75 last sessions-and the guests were amazed, because they 00:22:01.82\00:22:05.49 thought they were condemned to be like their parents and 00:22:05.59\00:22:08.06 grandparents and to be told that you have the 00:22:08.16\00:22:10.36 freedom through your lifestyle choices. Our 00:22:10.46\00:22:13.09 God is a god of freedom. You have the freedom 00:22:13.19\00:22:15.20 through your lifestyle choices that you can 00:22:15.26\00:22:17.37 change not your genetics, maybe, but the switches 00:22:17.43\00:22:20.40 on your genetics that you do not have to be 00:22:20.47\00:22:22.80 condemned to live the life of your parents 00:22:22.87\00:22:24.64 and your grandparents if there's health issues. 00:22:24.74\00:22:26.41 - Anything else you want to add to that, Dr. Kelly? 00:22:26.51\00:22:28.38 - No, I- well, I will say this: that we bring 00:22:28.48\00:22:32.11 that point out in the beginning of the program, 00:22:32.21\00:22:34.58 because as Sylvia was just saying, it's 00:22:34.68\00:22:36.99 transformational information the guest realize the potential, 00:22:37.05\00:22:42.69 and we want them to grasp the potential as 00:22:42.76\00:22:45.23 early in the program as possible so they get 00:22:45.33\00:22:47.70 as much benefit as possible. But it is 00:22:47.76\00:22:51.10 amazing. I mean, I give that talk literally around 00:22:51.17\00:22:54.57 the world on the epigenetics and lifestyle medicine. It is 00:22:54.64\00:22:59.84 transformational. People have a completely different 00:22:59.94\00:23:02.34 understanding of making healthy lifestyle change 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.81 when you realize it's changing my genes, 00:23:05.91\00:23:08.92 which is I'm turning genes on and off by 00:23:09.05\00:23:11.12 my choice. You know, Dr. Randy Jirtle was 00:23:11.19\00:23:15.49 the one that first published research 00:23:15.59\00:23:18.13 on this from Duke University, and I 00:23:18.19\00:23:20.26 love one of the statements he made about this. He 00:23:20.36\00:23:22.70 says, "Epigenetics is proving that we have 00:23:22.76\00:23:25.43 some responsibility for our genome and 00:23:25.50\00:23:28.57 it introduces the understanding of free 00:23:28.67\00:23:31.37 will into genetics, which for 20 or 30 00:23:31.44\00:23:35.71 years, the dogma was, "Well, you can't pick 00:23:35.81\00:23:38.15 your parents." Well, you can't pick your 00:23:38.28\00:23:40.42 parents, but you can choose your lifestyle. 00:23:40.52\00:23:43.25 You don't have to eat the same recipes that 00:23:43.32\00:23:45.19 Mom... If they're not healthy, we can change 00:23:45.25\00:23:48.86 them. - So, it's not necessarily- we're not 00:23:48.92\00:23:50.99 predisposed and preprogrammed to fail, to be out of shape, 00:23:51.06\00:23:56.30 to be overweight... In many cases, some 00:23:56.36\00:23:59.43 of those things may be hereditary, 00:23:59.50\00:24:01.44 but it doesn't say you have no choice...and 00:24:01.54\00:24:03.84 that's what I'm hearing. - That's right. - You DO 00:24:03.91\00:24:05.24 have a choice. - John, I don't want to be 00:24:05.27\00:24:06.81 personal here, but my own experience was about 00:24:06.88\00:24:09.84 15 years ago; I had a quadruple bypass surgery, 00:24:09.94\00:24:13.11 and I had to make major changes. I was 80 pounds 00:24:13.21\00:24:16.52 heavier. And what John is saying, I had to make 00:24:16.58\00:24:19.59 some serious decisions; and by God's grace, I'm 00:24:19.65\00:24:22.62 still kicking...you know? And that's, to me, what's 00:24:22.72\00:24:25.56 the blessing about the kind of program that 00:24:25.66\00:24:27.40 we offer. - That's right. - Changes can be made. 00:24:27.46\00:24:29.56 Not easy... - But it can be made. - And 00:24:30.47\00:24:33.60 the results are pretty amazing. - Wonderful, 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.30 wonderful. You know, when we talk about 00:24:35.37\00:24:37.87 Black Hills Health and Education Center, there 00:24:37.97\00:24:40.91 are a number of other components to it that 00:24:41.01\00:24:43.48 we're going to talk about in the second 00:24:43.55\00:24:44.88 half of our program. I think a wonderful time- 00:24:44.91\00:24:47.78 we're thinking about what you contribute... 00:24:47.92\00:24:50.15 But as we talk about this health center, 00:24:50.25\00:24:53.62 this educational lifestyle center, it's Christian-based, 00:24:53.72\00:24:57.19 and it's able to be Christian-based because 00:24:57.26\00:24:59.66 of the tribute that the Lord has made in each 00:24:59.76\00:25:02.30 one of our lives. Christianity is not something that's just 00:25:02.40\00:25:05.23 theological, but it's also practical; it's 00:25:05.30\00:25:07.84 educational; it's based on your health. It's a 00:25:07.90\00:25:10.51 total lifestyle, and so many people today- 00:25:10.57\00:25:13.58 there's science to Christianity; and when 00:25:13.64\00:25:16.24 you think about that, I can't think of a better 00:25:16.34\00:25:18.51 song to segue to the second half. This song, 00:25:18.61\00:25:21.32 "My Tribute." How can I say thanks? And right 00:25:21.38\00:25:24.75 after this song, we're going to transition into 00:25:24.82\00:25:26.45 some other components of the Black Hills lifestyle- well, 00:25:26.55\00:25:31.29 Health and Education Center. 00:25:31.36\00:25:33.70 - Thank you for that wonderful song, "My 00:29:28.70\00:29:30.70 Tribute"-Sam Ocampo. He really has a connection 00:29:30.77\00:29:34.30 to that piano. And as I segued into that 00:29:34.40\00:29:36.81 particular song, the tribute that the Lord 00:29:36.87\00:29:39.74 has made in our lives has enabled each of 00:29:39.77\00:29:43.04 you to participate in, now, your contributions 00:29:43.14\00:29:46.41 to those who come to the Black Hills Health 00:29:46.51\00:29:48.72 and Education Center. If you glance at all, 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.45 you might notice that there are some different 00:29:51.52\00:29:52.85 people that are here, and I'd like to introduce 00:29:52.89\00:29:54.92 them at this time. By the way, Sylvia is the 00:29:54.99\00:29:58.79 president of the Black Hills Health and Education 00:29:58.89\00:30:00.86 Center. Good to have you back on the second 00:30:00.96\00:30:02.36 half of the program. - Thank you. - But 00:30:02.43\00:30:04.20 the lady to your right, I'll allow you to introduce 00:30:04.27\00:30:06.00 yourself. Tell us who you are, where you're 00:30:06.03\00:30:07.57 from, and, in a nutshell, what you do right now. 00:30:07.60\00:30:09.70 - Okay. I am Janice Grote, and I live in Missouri, 00:30:09.77\00:30:13.51 but I've had the opportunity and privilege to come and 00:30:13.58\00:30:17.31 work as a nurse several times up at the Black Hills. 00:30:17.35\00:30:20.48 I feel blessed and privileged each time 00:30:20.55\00:30:23.79 I come, so I hope to come up there and work 00:30:23.85\00:30:26.72 for several months in a row, now, instead of 00:30:26.79\00:30:29.09 one-month segments. - She will be. - Okay. 00:30:29.12\00:30:31.29 The weather and the beautiful atmosphere 00:30:31.36\00:30:33.50 and setting is getting to you; it's kind of 00:30:33.53\00:30:34.96 drawing you. - It really does, yes, and the people 00:30:35.06\00:30:38.13 and the guests- watching them make their improvements, 00:30:38.20\00:30:40.64 it's wonderful. - And your name? - Jan. Jan 00:30:40.74\00:30:44.37 Grote. - Janice Grote. Good to have you here. 00:30:44.44\00:30:46.14 - Thank you. - And I may comment about the 00:30:46.17\00:30:48.44 young lady sitting next to you, but I'll allow you 00:30:48.51\00:30:50.98 to introduce yourself and tell us what capacity 00:30:51.05\00:30:52.78 you are at the Black Hills Health and Education 00:30:52.88\00:30:55.08 Center. - Okay. I'm Kezzia, and I live in 00:30:55.15\00:30:59.75 South Dakota. I actually work in the kitchen. I 00:30:59.82\00:31:03.66 pretty much am running it at this point. - Wow. 00:31:03.73\00:31:06.03 - So, all the cooking and everything involved. 00:31:06.09\00:31:09.16 - And I heard that as quickly as you summarized 00:31:09.26\00:31:13.44 that, there's a whole lot more involved. We're 00:31:13.54\00:31:15.44 going to get that out of you in just a moment, 00:31:15.54\00:31:17.01 because I've been to Black Hills before, and 00:31:17.11\00:31:18.97 I know that one of the staples of that health 00:31:19.04\00:31:21.71 and education center is food. It's not just 00:31:21.81\00:31:25.31 salads-and Sylvia reminded me. - No. 00:31:25.45\00:31:28.08 [laughter] - It's not just salads. It's a 00:31:28.18\00:31:29.98 beautiful culinary- we're going to find 00:31:30.05\00:31:32.59 out what you do to make the guests keep wanting 00:31:32.65\00:31:34.62 to come back. To my far right is Barbara Savage. 00:31:34.69\00:31:39.23 I was trying to fix it up and make it French 00:31:39.29\00:31:40.93 like, "Suh-VAUJ," but it's 'savage.' Good to 00:31:41.00\00:31:43.03 have you here, Barbara. - Thank you; good to be 00:31:43.10\00:31:44.43 here. - And tell us your capacity at Black 00:31:44.47\00:31:46.13 Hills. - I do the massage and hydrotherapy for the 00:31:46.20\00:31:49.24 women, and wherever else I need to fill in. - Okay! 00:31:49.30\00:31:55.54 Wonderful, wonderful. I'm glad to have you all 00:31:55.61\00:31:57.91 in the second half of the program. Black Hills 00:31:58.01\00:32:00.02 is really gaining ascendency? in the minds of those who 00:32:00.12\00:32:04.09 attend there, because we have a number of 00:32:04.12\00:32:05.59 educational and health centers around the 00:32:05.65\00:32:07.89 nation...but there's something about Black 00:32:07.96\00:32:10.09 Hills, not leaving the others out, because 00:32:10.16\00:32:11.83 each one has his own staple and its own 00:32:11.89\00:32:13.50 specialty. But somehow, people like the mountains, 00:32:13.60\00:32:16.56 they like the clean air, they like the history, 00:32:16.63\00:32:19.20 they like the valley... And what do you think 00:32:19.27\00:32:22.50 about all those aesthetics that surrounds you? Just 00:32:22.57\00:32:25.81 a gorgeous garden out there. - Well, nature 00:32:25.91\00:32:28.51 is God's second book, and we are a ministry. 00:32:28.58\00:32:31.91 We're a self-supporting ministry, and the people 00:32:31.98\00:32:33.72 who work here, I consider them missionaries-our 00:32:33.82\00:32:36.99 missionary pay. But we're there because 00:32:37.05\00:32:39.99 we have a burden for people and we want 00:32:40.06\00:32:43.12 them to live a full, rich life here in this 00:32:43.19\00:32:46.90 life; but more importantly, we want them to have 00:32:46.96\00:32:48.76 eternal life where they're going to pick 00:32:48.83\00:32:50.53 from the tree, and it's going to be very plant- 00:32:50.60\00:32:52.50 based there! So, having the beautiful natural 00:32:52.57\00:32:57.67 surroundings just helps us. We have people who 00:32:57.77\00:33:00.51 may not walk closely with the Lord and may 00:33:00.58\00:33:02.78 have never walked with the Lord; it helps us. 00:33:02.84\00:33:05.51 The Spirit is there and the Holy Spirit helps us 00:33:05.61\00:33:08.88 with this beautiful natural surrounding 00:33:08.95\00:33:10.79 to separate them from the world and to make 00:33:10.82\00:33:13.46 them reduce their stress and think on the spiritual 00:33:13.52\00:33:16.22 things. And that's just, I think, a very, very 00:33:16.29\00:33:18.79 important aspect of our program is its natural 00:33:18.86\00:33:22.36 beauty and where it is. We have, as Dr. Kelly 00:33:22.43\00:33:24.80 was saying, we have all the evidence-based 00:33:24.87\00:33:26.74 scientific stuff. Kezzia and her menus are 00:33:26.84\00:33:30.44 fantastic; but being in these natural, beautiful 00:33:30.51\00:33:33.34 surroundings where you can get out and walk... 00:33:33.38\00:33:35.64 - That's right. - ...I think really contributes 00:33:35.71\00:33:38.05 to the ministry of the program. - Just being 00:33:38.15\00:33:40.22 there for one day, my stress went from like, 00:33:40.28\00:33:42.08 here to like...just sloped down, because 00:33:42.18\00:33:44.65 I woke up in the morning to the sound of nothing... 00:33:44.72\00:33:46.29 and that's important. Not the sound of a car 00:33:46.35\00:33:48.56 door slamming, not the sound of neighbors 00:33:48.62\00:33:50.23 walking above our heads, but it's just to the sound 00:33:50.29\00:33:53.36 of nothing-or maybe the trees rustling or a bird 00:33:53.43\00:33:56.77 in the distance, chirping... It's just so beautiful, 00:33:56.83\00:33:59.33 the way that God intended it to be. - And then we do 00:33:59.43\00:34:01.97 have our spiritual- we do not have anyone here 00:34:02.00\00:34:04.64 right now representing our biblical response 00:34:04.71\00:34:06.51 therapy, but we have morning devotions that- 00:34:06.57\00:34:10.05 morning stretches and morning devotions with 00:34:10.15\00:34:12.41 the guests, and we have spiritual and mental coaches 00:34:12.48\00:34:16.95 that help them go through, and for those who are open 00:34:17.02\00:34:20.36 to learn biblical applications of how to 00:34:20.46\00:34:23.16 reduce your stress and various things. And if 00:34:23.29\00:34:25.43 they have problems, something going on in 00:34:25.49\00:34:27.06 their life, there are people that they can 00:34:27.13\00:34:28.76 talk to. For those who don't come in and don't 00:34:28.83\00:34:30.97 want to be as spiritually inclined, it is optional 00:34:31.03\00:34:33.50 for them that most people, guests, will listen in and 00:34:33.57\00:34:38.24 they still benefit from these concepts that 00:34:38.31\00:34:41.84 come from the Bible. Even if they aren't 00:34:41.91\00:34:43.61 yet ready to embrace the Bible, they still 00:34:43.68\00:34:45.88 benefit from the concepts. So, that is a very important 00:34:45.91\00:34:48.45 element of our program, and, again, I'm sorry that 00:34:48.48\00:34:50.69 none of our spiritual and mental coaches 00:34:50.72\00:34:52.95 were able to be here today to talk about this. 00:34:52.99\00:34:54.92 But that's how we start the day-that prayer is 00:34:54.99\00:34:59.66 a very important aspect if we pray with the guests 00:34:59.73\00:35:02.06 and we don't push anything on them, but 00:35:02.13\00:35:04.57 we certainly let them know that we're trying 00:35:04.63\00:35:06.53 to demonstrate not only a good lifestyle 00:35:06.60\00:35:08.57 for them, but we want to demonstrate God's 00:35:08.64\00:35:10.47 love through everything that we do. - Right. 00:35:10.54\00:35:12.41 Social, mental, spiritual, and physical, all the 00:35:12.47\00:35:14.54 aspects of life that balance us out-which 00:35:14.61\00:35:17.18 is really interesting to me, because as 00:35:17.25\00:35:18.58 I ask the RN and the nurse here, Janice Grote- 00:35:18.61\00:35:21.78 because when people come to the program... 00:35:21.85\00:35:23.42 Let's talk about- so, I'm coming in for the 00:35:23.49\00:35:25.15 first time. What actually happens in preparation 00:35:25.22\00:35:27.29 for me to become a participant in the 00:35:27.39\00:35:29.49 program? What actually- what kind of protocol 00:35:29.56\00:35:31.73 does a person go through when they just say, "Okay, 00:35:31.83\00:35:33.76 I'm here; I want to enter the program"? What do 00:35:33.86\00:35:36.53 you actually do? - Well, they come in kind of 00:35:36.60\00:35:40.40 scared and not sure what we're going do to them. 00:35:40.47\00:35:42.67 They get scared about what they're going to 00:35:42.74\00:35:44.34 be fed, and they're relieved real quickly 00:35:44.37\00:35:47.31 that first morning. But then, as the nurse, we 00:35:47.38\00:35:50.65 make sure that they know not to eat anything 00:35:50.71\00:35:52.75 during the night and that they will have a 00:35:52.85\00:35:54.78 blood draw, a pre-blood draw, before the program 00:35:54.88\00:35:58.82 the first morning. Then, at the end of the program, 00:35:58.89\00:36:02.59 the post-draw, they will get to see these wonderful 00:36:02.66\00:36:05.13 results, and that's a very exciting time for 00:36:05.23\00:36:08.40 the guest and for me to watch them, Ryan, 00:36:08.50\00:36:13.44 so animated and so motivated. He was 00:36:13.54\00:36:16.74 ideal to see his CRP go from 14 to 4. 00:36:16.84\00:36:22.61 - What's a CRP, particularly? - It's the C-reactive protein, 00:36:22.68\00:36:25.45 and that has to do with the inflammation in your 00:36:25.51\00:36:29.22 body. So, anything over a three is too high. So, 00:36:29.28\00:36:33.56 his going from a 14 to a 4 was so exciting for 00:36:33.66\00:36:38.96 him. - And that's Ryan Day, one of our guys 00:36:39.06\00:36:41.10 here. - Yes, exactly. - Singer in Israel and 00:36:41.16\00:36:43.26 preacher. - Oh, he was such a great guest. We 00:36:43.33\00:36:46.47 enjoyed him so much. Like I said, he was so 00:36:46.53\00:36:48.80 animated, and every meal got a picture. 00:36:48.87\00:36:53.04 He'd be talking about, "Now, that's my favorite," 00:36:54.64\00:36:57.51 and then the next day, THAT might be his favorite. 00:36:57.61\00:36:59.81 So, he was so much fun. So, yeah. And his cholesterol, 00:36:59.88\00:37:04.45 also, went from... It was a really good drop, 00:37:04.52\00:37:08.22 as well, so he was very happy about that. I was 00:37:08.32\00:37:10.76 the first one to get to see his weight. We 00:37:10.83\00:37:14.36 weighed him, and then him coming back and 00:37:14.43\00:37:16.90 getting that second weight, he was hoping 00:37:16.97\00:37:19.57 that he would maybe lose 10 pounds, and was so 00:37:19.67\00:37:23.47 thrilled when he'd lost 21 pounds... 21.4. And 00:37:23.54\00:37:27.94 you know, losing 9 inches from the 00:37:28.04\00:37:31.95 measurements. - So the program is very effective! 00:37:32.01\00:37:36.28 But you assess a person when they go in to kind 00:37:36.38\00:37:38.45 of see, "Well, you're at the starting line here. 00:37:38.52\00:37:40.76 Now, we're going to gage you as you, 00:37:40.82\00:37:42.29 so to speak, run around this track, a rehabilitation 00:37:42.36\00:37:44.66 and change and reform in a lot of areas of your 00:37:44.76\00:37:48.40 life. - Exactly. - Wow. - And at first, you know, 00:37:48.46\00:37:52.73 maybe the exercise was a little difficult and he 00:37:52.83\00:37:55.24 was getting kind of sore. The second day, both our 00:37:55.30\00:37:58.21 guests said-or maybe it was the third day- 00:37:58.27\00:38:00.48 "You know, I've been doing really well," and 00:38:00.54\00:38:02.74 they were really wanting to, again, do the whole 00:38:02.81\00:38:04.35 program. But then, it's like, they both came 00:38:04.45\00:38:07.92 down and said, "You know, I feel like I got 00:38:07.98\00:38:09.32 ran over by a truck. Now, I'm not so good 00:38:09.35\00:38:11.52 this morning." But you know, that's what happens 00:38:11.59\00:38:14.92 with our bodies when you start making those changes; 00:38:15.02\00:38:17.43 then, our bodies react and they start detoxing 00:38:17.53\00:38:21.06 and such, and it's not a real good feeling. But 00:38:21.16\00:38:24.27 they came out of that shortly and we're back 00:38:25.30\00:38:27.50 on going forward, and quickly... - That's right; 00:38:27.57\00:38:32.64 they're back on the track of life. - Exactly. 00:38:32.71\00:38:34.44 - Since you talked about Ryan, I want to show 00:38:34.51\00:38:36.71 some more pictures here, because it's a very interesting- 00:38:36.78\00:38:38.51 apart of the program here- we saw some of the first 00:38:38.58\00:38:40.88 half of the program. I want to talk about 00:38:40.95\00:38:42.58 some of these, and maybe you can walk 00:38:42.68\00:38:44.02 us through... Any one of you could comment 00:38:44.05\00:38:45.39 on the pictures that we're going to see 00:38:45.42\00:38:46.76 right now, because this right here... Look 00:38:46.79\00:38:49.52 at that setting. I think that speaks for itself. 00:38:49.62\00:38:52.19 That's what you see on a daily basis. - That's 00:38:53.43\00:38:55.56 where you go walking. Dan would lead the 00:38:55.63\00:38:57.50 walks after lunch. - Okay. And that's what time 00:38:57.57\00:39:02.00 of year? - Spring... - It's like, June. - Summer? 00:39:02.10\00:39:05.04 Spring, summer. Wow. I mean, skies- all 00:39:05.11\00:39:07.08 these pictures- now, that's some canyon 00:39:07.14\00:39:08.94 wall? - Yeah, that's Battle Creek running 00:39:09.04\00:39:10.88 there, and that's- heading back with the canyon gets 00:39:10.95\00:39:12.95 more narrow. - Okay. - Behind the center. 00:39:13.01\00:39:15.25 - And that's...you can't tell about Inspiration Point. 00:39:15.38\00:39:18.05 - Okay. Like I said, Ryan was very motivated; 00:39:18.15\00:39:21.46 but, you know, it was cold when he was there 00:39:23.66\00:39:25.59 in the wintertime. We'd been walking most every 00:39:25.69\00:39:31.17 day. And sometimes, that wind is really 00:39:31.23\00:39:32.97 crazy out there and such, but I said, "You 00:39:33.03\00:39:36.14 know, maybe today is the day. Maybe you 00:39:36.20\00:39:38.57 should do Red Canyon Road." Well, Red Canyon Road 00:39:38.64\00:39:42.24 is a very sharp, steep hill, and it's a good 00:39:42.31\00:39:47.58 quarter of a mile. So, yep-today was the 00:39:47.68\00:39:51.22 day. And so, we had to make a few stops, but 00:39:51.29\00:39:56.96 he made it all the way up to a stop sign, which 00:39:57.09\00:39:59.93 was...by the time we got back home-back 00:40:00.00\00:40:02.70 to the lodge, I should say-it was a mile and 00:40:02.76\00:40:05.73 a half. He was so excited that he had been able to 00:40:05.83\00:40:11.44 do that, knowing a week ago, he couldn't have 00:40:11.51\00:40:14.38 done that. And then, the next week, a day 00:40:14.44\00:40:17.31 before he left, he wanted to go up Red Canyon Road 00:40:17.38\00:40:21.38 again. So, we went all the way to the stop 00:40:21.48\00:40:24.29 sign and back-and I think that was two 00:40:24.35\00:40:26.32 miles-but he wanted, really, to be the one 00:40:26.39\00:40:29.56 guest who'd walked the most of any guest that'd 00:40:30.53\00:40:33.56 ever been there. So, the next day, they were 00:40:33.63\00:40:38.40 leaving, so it's like, "The next time I come, 00:40:38.47\00:40:41.04 I'll do that." But I didn't tell about 00:40:41.10\00:40:43.14 Inspiration Point; we haven't shown that 00:40:43.24\00:40:44.84 though, so I just... - Yeah. Let's just 00:40:44.91\00:40:46.27 go back to that picture, the down-looking picture 00:40:46.34\00:40:48.38 from the mountaintop of the center. That one, 00:40:48.44\00:40:49.98 that right there. - Yeah. And then, another day, 00:40:50.01\00:40:51.68 "Okay, Ryan, maybe today, you should go 00:40:51.78\00:40:54.18 up Inspiration Point." So, again, he walked 00:40:54.32\00:41:00.49 to the top, and there's a high five. Maybe 00:41:00.59\00:41:03.09 they'll show that later, where he and the BRT 00:41:03.16\00:41:05.39 counselor were giving a high five after he'd 00:41:05.49\00:41:09.33 made it to the top of Inspiration Point. It's not 00:41:09.40\00:41:15.47 just smooth walking up to the top... - No, I can 00:41:15.57\00:41:17.94 see, because the altitude does really... It takes 00:41:17.97\00:41:20.54 a sharp... - Yeah, there's a lot of rocks and such, so 00:41:20.64\00:41:24.58 it was an undertaking... but I was so proud of him. 00:41:24.68\00:41:27.78 He was so much fun to have as a guest. - And 00:41:27.85\00:41:30.65 you know, part of that, Janice, that made the 00:41:30.72\00:41:33.52 difference is not only the medical side, but 00:41:33.59\00:41:36.69 Kezzia was making sure he had the fuel. - Oh, 00:41:36.76\00:41:39.66 absolutely. She's a favorite there-let 00:41:39.76\00:41:42.53 me tell you. - She's quite quiet, but we're 00:41:42.60\00:41:45.63 going to get some- tell us, Kezzia, give us a 00:41:45.73\00:41:47.37 peak into the mind of a culinary artist at 00:41:47.44\00:41:51.31 Black Hills Health and Education Center. - Well... 00:41:51.37\00:41:55.64 [laughter] I guess when I start my days 00:41:55.74\00:42:01.88 in the kitchen or when I'm planning a menu, 00:42:01.95\00:42:03.92 I want to be sure to give the food to the 00:42:03.99\00:42:08.66 guest that will the most quickly and 00:42:08.72\00:42:13.13 effective results they want. So, I start there, 00:42:13.19\00:42:18.17 and I look for plant foods, for whole foods, 00:42:18.23\00:42:22.54 for as much nutrition as I can possibly fit 00:42:22.60\00:42:26.17 into the meals. And then from there, I take 00:42:26.27\00:42:28.64 it and put it into different dishes and 00:42:28.74\00:42:32.28 try to make it look nice. - Okay. - Not 00:42:32.35\00:42:35.78 just salads, but all sorts of different 00:42:35.88\00:42:37.95 things. And even the salads we do have, not 00:42:38.02\00:42:40.12 just your regular lettuce and salads with dressing, 00:42:40.22\00:42:43.99 but a variety. - Okay. So there's not only 00:42:44.06\00:42:47.16 just the nutritional food, but also, there's 00:42:47.23\00:42:49.26 some artistry to it, too. It doesn't just 00:42:49.36\00:42:51.73 taste good; it also looks good. - Yes. - Wow. - Every 00:42:51.83\00:42:55.10 meal is beautiful. - That's right. - It's 00:42:55.17\00:42:57.34 picture-perfect. - That gives a different bend 00:42:57.44\00:43:00.21 to that song. "Every meal is beautiful..." 00:43:00.28\00:43:02.94 [laughter] "...in its own way." But you're 00:43:03.04\00:43:05.11 the quiet storm in the kitchen! Because you 00:43:05.21\00:43:08.28 don't strike me as that person that's going to 00:43:08.35\00:43:10.25 be shouting, "Dinner's ready!" - No! I actually 00:43:10.32\00:43:13.46 don't. People come at mealtimes, and I have 00:43:13.52\00:43:16.36 the food ready to go. - Okay. - But sometimes, 00:43:16.46\00:43:18.99 they do come and stand in the hallway and talk, 00:43:19.09\00:43:20.80 and then I have to go chorale them. But mostly, 00:43:20.90\00:43:24.53 I don't have to do that. - Because they're ready. 00:43:24.60\00:43:27.20 - They're ready to eat. - They go for one meal- 00:43:27.27\00:43:29.50 and then let me just ask this question. One of the 00:43:29.60\00:43:31.61 practices at Black Hills is you try to 00:43:31.71\00:43:33.84 prevent them or try to encourage them not to 00:43:33.94\00:43:36.14 eat between meals, 'cause there's a science 00:43:36.24\00:43:38.98 to that. I should have asked Dr. Kelly. Tell 00:43:39.05\00:43:41.52 us about that. -? 00:43:41.62\00:43:43.89 Dr. Kelly would've been a good person to ask. 00:43:43.95\00:43:46.19 Basically, it is a way for your body to reset 00:43:46.29\00:43:49.79 between meals and to help your system handle 00:43:49.86\00:43:54.36 your day, your food, better and to enable 00:43:54.46\00:43:59.00 you to find more satisfaction in the food that you do eat 00:43:59.10\00:44:03.94 so that you're not as tempted to eat between 00:44:04.01\00:44:06.27 meals. - That's good. So, you get the nutrition 00:44:06.37\00:44:09.04 you need. And think of it this way. You know, 00:44:09.14\00:44:11.35 between filling up your vehicle- you fill it up 00:44:11.41\00:44:14.68 and you park it. You don't just keep filling 00:44:14.75\00:44:17.42 it up. You wait till that fuel burns off, 00:44:17.49\00:44:20.49 then you put the fuel back in; and the body 00:44:20.56\00:44:22.19 is similar, is the same way, and some of us 00:44:22.26\00:44:24.09 live, like one person once said they eat 00:44:24.16\00:44:25.79 one meal a day, all day. That's not what is a 00:44:25.89\00:44:29.06 healthy practice. Well, for some people, that 00:44:29.16\00:44:31.90 may be-I'll talk about this at a different time- 00:44:32.00\00:44:35.20 if you're trying to gain weight, there's a healthy 00:44:35.30\00:44:37.51 way of doing that. But when you don't eat 00:44:37.61\00:44:40.41 between meals, you look forward to the 00:44:40.48\00:44:42.28 next one, which I learned when I went to Black Hills. 00:44:42.34\00:44:44.45 So, I was in that kitchen for breakfast, for lunch, 00:44:44.55\00:44:47.92 and I surely didn't miss dinner, because after 00:44:48.02\00:44:50.39 dinner was the next meal that is...breakfast. 00:44:50.45\00:44:52.89 Wow. - Can I just say... - Sure. - All that fiber- 00:44:52.99\00:44:56.89 I mean, these are high-fiber meals, and 00:44:56.99\00:44:59.23 that helps to hold the food so it's not emptying 00:44:59.29\00:45:01.90 out in a hurry and then you're starving. - That's 00:45:01.96\00:45:04.50 right. - One of our guests said the whole 00:45:04.57\00:45:06.30 time she was there, she was never hungry. 00:45:06.37\00:45:09.14 Well, she went from eating three meals a 00:45:09.24\00:45:11.17 day like most people do, and yeah. So, she 00:45:11.21\00:45:16.21 was so happy about that; but I hope we 00:45:16.28\00:45:18.08 get a picture of a plate or several plates of the 00:45:18.15\00:45:21.42 food, because they're going to be amazed at 00:45:21.52\00:45:24.99 how much they get to intake. - Oh, I remember 00:45:25.09\00:45:27.29 that. I don't want to miss Barbara, because 00:45:27.36\00:45:30.69 Barbara's very much a part of it, not only- 00:45:30.76\00:45:32.66 tell us- remind us of your capacity at Black 00:45:32.73\00:45:34.96 Hills. - I do the massage and hydrotherapy for the 00:45:35.06\00:45:38.20 guests-women guests. - Now, hydrotherapy... 00:45:38.27\00:45:41.10 Talk about that, because Al Trace talked about 00:45:41.17\00:45:43.30 some of the massage- hydrotherapy. Somebody 00:45:43.37\00:45:45.77 might think, "A hydro water..." Tell us about 00:45:45.81\00:45:48.14 that. Kind of open up that and explain that 00:45:48.21\00:45:50.68 to us. - We have several ways of giving it. There's 00:45:50.81\00:45:53.75 Russian steam bath and contrast showers and 00:45:53.85\00:45:57.35 contrast foot baths and hot-and-cold 00:45:57.49\00:46:00.76 fomentations and infrared sauna... Ryan especially 00:46:00.86\00:46:05.59 liked the infrared sauna. - Now, the contrast showers... 00:46:05.69\00:46:09.46 Somebody once talked about a funny event 00:46:09.60\00:46:12.77 at Black Hills. We had a guy that was living 00:46:12.87\00:46:14.90 here. He had a contrast shower. Would contrast 00:46:14.97\00:46:17.77 be hot and cold? - Mhm. - Which one do you start 00:46:17.84\00:46:20.41 with? - Hot. [laughter] - I cannot... It's in my 00:46:20.51\00:46:24.48 mind still. He said he was in this contrast 00:46:24.58\00:46:26.38 shower, and they didn't inform him when they 00:46:26.45\00:46:28.85 were going to go completely cold, and they heard this 00:46:28.92\00:46:31.39 blood-curdling scream and they realized it was 00:46:31.45\00:46:34.16 him. But the contrast... Tell us, what does that 00:46:34.22\00:46:36.46 do? What does that do for you? - Well, it's 00:46:36.52\00:46:38.69 very stimulating. It'll stimulate your immune 00:46:38.76\00:46:40.56 system, it's good for people that have 00:46:40.60\00:46:42.63 depression... It perks them up, gets a lot of 00:46:42.70\00:46:46.23 the endorphins going, and it's good for people 00:46:46.30\00:46:52.14 that are trying to quit smoking. There are eight 00:46:52.21\00:46:56.41 showerheads in the contrast shower, so they're getting 00:46:56.44\00:46:59.25 it from all directions. The temperature controls 00:46:59.31\00:47:01.32 are on the outside, and we usually warn them 00:47:01.38\00:47:03.92 ahead of time. [laughter] And it's going to be 3 00:47:04.05\00:47:07.49 minutes of hot, and then 10 seconds of cold, 3 00:47:07.56\00:47:11.16 more minutes of hot, 15 seconds of cold, 3 00:47:11.26\00:47:15.20 more minutes of hot, and then it could be 00:47:15.26\00:47:16.77 20 seconds, but it could be longer. I just tell 00:47:16.83\00:47:19.93 them, "Just tell me when you've had enough." 00:47:20.00\00:47:21.67 There were people that were competing at one 00:47:21.74\00:47:24.11 point. Some were going 2 and a half minutes in 00:47:24.21\00:47:26.78 the cold, and it gets cold, like...down to like, 00:47:26.88\00:47:31.71 58 degrees it can get to if you run it long enough. 00:47:31.81\00:47:36.85 - But that's good, though! So, the benefit to the 00:47:36.95\00:47:39.25 body is stimulation, sending the blood to 00:47:39.32\00:47:42.32 and from to the different organs, because when you 00:47:42.39\00:47:45.46 said-how many shower heads? Eight shower 00:47:45.53\00:47:46.96 heads? - Mhm. - So, you're not- you can't 00:47:47.03\00:47:49.66 run from one shower head, because it's 00:47:49.73\00:47:51.07 getting it all over the place. Is it a circular 00:47:51.10\00:47:53.50 shower, or is it...? - No, it's just a square 00:47:53.57\00:47:56.17 shower, but they're on three sides; the shower 00:47:56.24\00:47:58.87 heads are on three sides. - Okay. So, you 00:47:58.94\00:48:00.71 do have one way to escape if you want to 00:48:00.78\00:48:02.11 run out. - Yeah, you can crash out the door 00:48:02.14\00:48:04.01 if you want to. [laughter] - But I don't think that 00:48:04.08\00:48:07.05 people have gone there for that. I mean, it could 00:48:07.15\00:48:08.85 be hilarious, 'cause this guy, when he was 00:48:08.95\00:48:10.42 telling me the story, he said, "I don't remember 00:48:10.49\00:48:12.55 if they told me they were going to shift 00:48:12.62\00:48:15.32 or not; but when it hit me," he said he 00:48:15.39\00:48:17.26 screamed. But he came back very, very healthy! 00:48:17.33\00:48:20.26 That's the one thing that was nice about it. 00:48:20.33\00:48:22.20 He came back with a different lifestyle. He 00:48:22.26\00:48:26.60 learned health, and he surely did get an 00:48:26.67\00:48:28.87 education...and anything else that you participate 00:48:28.94\00:48:31.44 in there when you're there. Don't you also- 00:48:31.54\00:48:33.78 what about the exercise center? Are you...? 00:48:33.84\00:48:36.91 - Well, I'm not a fitness trainer, but 00:48:36.98\00:48:38.65 we have a very good fitness center. That's 00:48:38.71\00:48:43.08 one of the outstanding things about it, and 00:48:43.15\00:48:45.29 people get personal fitness training. We 00:48:45.39\00:48:47.72 have very nice Nautilus equipment. - I remember 00:48:47.82\00:48:51.86 that! - Mhm, as well as free weights and 00:48:51.93\00:48:54.16 everything, so it's a real nice fitness center. 00:48:54.23\00:48:56.60 So, it's really quite the package. You get 00:48:57.43\00:48:59.33 the personal fitness training, and Kezzia 00:48:59.40\00:49:02.17 didn't mention her vegetarian cooking 00:49:02.27\00:49:03.91 classes, and the doctors' lectures and even tours 00:49:04.01\00:49:08.58 on the weekends of the beautiful Black Hills. - Wow. 00:49:08.64\00:49:13.25 And going on group walking. Do you- did 00:49:13.31\00:49:17.82 I just hear you say you teach them some of the 00:49:17.92\00:49:20.06 cooking? - Yes. We had about five cooking classes 00:49:20.16\00:49:23.86 during the 3-week time. - Wow. - And the guests 00:49:23.93\00:49:26.96 come in the kitchen with me, and we go over the 00:49:27.03\00:49:29.86 recipes that we use. And if they don't know 00:49:29.90\00:49:33.64 how to cook, I show them how to cook from 00:49:33.70\00:49:35.24 knowing how to chop vegetables to the 00:49:35.34\00:49:38.54 people that know more cooking to more advanced 00:49:38.67\00:49:42.18 things. It's really fun having them, and they 00:49:42.24\00:49:44.81 really enjoy it. - Wow. - And then we also talk 00:49:44.85\00:49:48.72 about things they can do when they go home. 00:49:48.78\00:49:50.52 - Okay. That's good. So, what they get 00:49:50.55\00:49:52.65 used to... - Right. - ...they are trained 00:49:52.72\00:49:54.16 on how they can continue this at home. That's very 00:49:54.19\00:49:56.46 interesting, because a lot of times, we go 00:49:56.52\00:49:58.43 home and we think, "Oh, they gave me 00:49:58.53\00:50:01.36 good food, but what do I do next?" - Right. 00:50:01.43\00:50:03.53 - Sylvia, I want to come back to you, 00:50:03.67\00:50:05.53 because I think there's another picture that we 00:50:05.57\00:50:08.10 didn't see yet. Wasn't there a bell? 00:50:08.14\00:50:10.51 - Oh-there are two pictures, yes. - Yeah, 00:50:10.61\00:50:12.77 I want to see that. - It's Kezzia' s kitchen. 00:50:12.87\00:50:14.58 - Okay. - The main lodge. So, that's her 00:50:14.64\00:50:18.78 kitchen. That's the conference room in 00:50:18.88\00:50:20.68 the front...and then the bell. And everyone- 00:50:20.75\00:50:22.45 the bell's out in the front yard. So, this 00:50:22.48\00:50:24.25 is the last picture we have. The dining room 00:50:24.32\00:50:26.15 has windows on three sides. This is one of 00:50:26.25\00:50:28.72 the views out of the dining room that she would be 00:50:28.79\00:50:30.36 looking out that way. We always take group 00:50:30.43\00:50:32.36 photos, and so this is where people often 00:50:32.43\00:50:34.10 congregate, and they will-around the bell- 00:50:34.16\00:50:36.67 we will take a group photo. - You also 00:50:36.73\00:50:38.67 mentioned that you have- you're working 00:50:38.73\00:50:40.60 on making the program... Because it's a self-supporting, 00:50:40.67\00:50:43.10 you want to try to make the program accessible 00:50:43.17\00:50:44.94 to people that are denominational workers 00:50:45.01\00:50:46.64 that could have access to that kind of program. 00:50:46.71\00:50:49.18 Talk about that. - What we're 00:50:49.24\00:50:50.58 really excited about this is that... So, we are 00:50:50.61\00:50:52.18 self-supporting and we understand the 00:50:52.28\00:50:54.52 challenges that there are in working for a 00:50:54.62\00:50:56.38 self-supporting, for working for the church 00:50:56.42\00:50:58.09 or working for a self- supporting support ministry 00:50:58.19\00:51:00.49 of the Adventist church. So, we guess we're talking 00:51:00.59\00:51:04.33 about Ryan Day of 3ABN being there as a guest, 00:51:04.39\00:51:07.10 but we want to make it available to denominational 00:51:07.16\00:51:09.70 employees and employees of church-supporting 00:51:09.76\00:51:12.53 institutions such as 3ABN. - Wonderful. 00:51:12.60\00:51:15.10 - So, I am working- several ideas, we've 00:51:15.17\00:51:19.17 got, but one of them is I'm working on some 00:51:19.24\00:51:20.81 donors who would underride a program for a month so 00:51:20.88\00:51:23.48 that we can invite all these people who will 00:51:23.55\00:51:26.25 be able to come in and it will not be an economic 00:51:26.31\00:51:27.98 hardship for them to do so. We also, sometimes, 00:51:28.05\00:51:31.85 have- we have scholarship funds, and so individuals 00:51:31.89\00:51:34.76 also want to come. Sometimes, we can get 00:51:34.82\00:51:37.03 individual sponsoring or use our scholarship fund. 00:51:37.09\00:51:39.59 So, one of our missions... I've not been president 00:51:39.66\00:51:43.00 for that long, but one of our goals and missions is 00:51:43.06\00:51:46.00 that we so believe in our ministry and what we do 00:51:46.07\00:51:48.54 that we want to open that up to other people 00:51:48.60\00:51:50.61 within the church as their ministry, and to 00:51:50.71\00:51:53.11 others, we want to be able to minister to 00:51:53.17\00:51:54.81 them to help them in their ministry. - Wow. 00:51:54.91\00:51:56.88 - So, be looking for great things coming. 00:51:56.95\00:51:58.71 We're pulling this all together to be able 00:51:58.78\00:52:00.85 to have special rates and even special programs 00:52:00.92\00:52:03.89 for denominational and other church-affiliated... 00:52:03.99\00:52:07.12 - Well, I appreciate that, because my wife 00:52:07.19\00:52:08.99 and I are thinking about taking advantage of that. 00:52:09.09\00:52:11.16 And I know if you're watching or listening 00:52:11.19\00:52:12.89 to the program, you want to find out how to get in touch 00:52:12.96\00:52:14.66 with Black Hills Health and Education Center. 00:52:14.73\00:52:16.70 Here is the information that you need. 00:52:16.77\00:52:18.93 - If you're interested in improving your 00:52:21.10\00:52:22.94 lifestyle and want to learn more about this 00:52:23.00\00:52:25.01 self-supporting ministry of Black Hills Health and 00:52:25.07\00:52:27.58 Education Center, you can contact them at: 00:52:27.64\00:52:30.05
