I want to spend my life 00:00:01.56\00:00:06.60 mending broken people 00:00:07.44\00:00:12.24 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.34\00:00:17.95 removing pain 00:00:18.78\00:00:23.15 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.79\00:00:28.72 heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.82\00:00:33.86 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.36\00:00:39.40 mending broken people 00:00:40.17\00:00:44.71 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.64\00:00:50.88 mending broken people 00:00:51.25\00:00:55.98 - Hello and welcome to 3ABN Today! I am so 00:01:09.30\00:01:13.44 excited about our program today. Sorry that my 00:01:13.50\00:01:16.37 husband's not here with me. You know I'm always 00:01:16.44\00:01:18.41 happier when he's here with me, but he sends 00:01:18.47\00:01:22.34 his regards to you, and I am thrilled to 00:01:22.41\00:01:25.68 be here with our guests. First of all... First of all, 00:01:25.78\00:01:31.99 Rico Hill is a very dear friend. He's no 00:01:32.09\00:01:36.83 stranger to 3ABN and definitely no stranger 00:01:36.89\00:01:40.36 to Dare to Dream, and he is my brother in 00:01:40.46\00:01:43.50 the Lord. So, Rico Hill is here from the 00:01:43.53\00:01:46.67 Beehive International Ministries. Yay! - So 00:01:46.70\00:01:50.24 happy to be here, sister, with you again. 00:01:50.27\00:01:52.11 - Oh, it's so great. - The excitement can 00:01:52.17\00:01:53.74 be felt as palpable. - I know it! I know it! 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.34 And my viewers are going to be so excited 00:01:56.41\00:01:58.01 when they hear what you're doing. It's always 00:01:58.08\00:02:00.82 exciting to know what God is doing. - And He's 00:02:00.92\00:02:04.02 moving. - And He's moving! Introduce the 00:02:04.09\00:02:07.16 rest of your team. - Well, with me today 00:02:07.26\00:02:08.66 is Jonathan Euler, our director, of international 00:02:08.69\00:02:11.79 development for the Beehive, and a gentleman 00:02:11.89\00:02:14.30 we've been working with over the last 00:02:14.36\00:02:15.70 couple of years, Leslie Williams, who was a 00:02:15.73\00:02:17.23 representative for the trust, and we'll 00:02:17.27\00:02:18.87 talk about that partnership. - Absolutely! 00:02:18.90\00:02:22.34 It's going to be great. You're not gonna want 00:02:22.40\00:02:24.51 to miss any of this. But let's have some 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.24 music first, and then we'll come back and 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.28 talk to our guests. Our musical guest 00:02:28.38\00:02:31.35 today is Sam Ocampo, and he's going to play "My Tribute." 00:02:31.38\00:02:36.08 - How beautiful. Thank you, Sam, for that. To 00:06:38.69\00:06:41.20 God be the glory for the things He has done. 00:06:41.30\00:06:43.67 And He's done such great things! Think 00:06:43.73\00:06:46.80 about the great things God has done in your 00:06:46.90\00:06:48.70 life. Think about what He's always doing in 00:06:48.77\00:06:51.01 your life, and then be thankful and be grateful 00:06:51.11\00:06:55.01 to Him for all that He's done. We're grateful 00:06:55.11\00:06:58.05 for what God is doing with the Beehive! First 00:06:58.15\00:07:01.68 of all, the Beehive. Why the Beehive? What 00:07:01.75\00:07:05.69 is the Beehive? What is that name? - Although, 00:07:05.75\00:07:08.82 we are making honey now, so we can say that. 00:07:08.89\00:07:11.73 Jonathan will share about that when we 00:07:11.79\00:07:13.13 get to it. The Beehive actually comes from... 00:07:13.19\00:07:16.33 We saw this back in 2009. We saw a statement 00:07:16.43\00:07:20.04 in the Spirit of Prophecy where, in 00:07:20.14\00:07:21.90 the book, Welfare Ministry, it talked about how 00:07:21.97\00:07:24.71 Ellen White had had a dream. And in this 00:07:24.81\00:07:27.71 dream, she saw two beehives. Long story 00:07:27.81\00:07:31.28 short, it turned out it was not real beehives; 00:07:31.35\00:07:34.95 it was actually two churches that were in 00:07:35.05\00:07:36.92 the Bay Area who were busy, seeking to finish 00:07:36.99\00:07:40.29 the work-one in San Francisco, one in Oakland. 00:07:40.36\00:07:42.59 They had, primarily, work that was 00:07:42.66\00:07:45.46 health-related...but it was more than that 00:07:45.56\00:07:49.23 in that it was integrated evangelism, it was 00:07:49.30\00:07:52.83 meeting people right where they were-literally- 00:07:52.90\00:07:55.44 as they had shops and restaurants and meeting 00:07:55.50\00:07:58.74 rooms and reading rooms and all these kinds of 00:07:58.81\00:08:00.71 things that were reaching the people in an organic 00:08:00.74\00:08:03.31 way. I'm going to emphasize that. That 00:08:03.38\00:08:05.98 really captured our attention, and we saw, 00:08:06.05\00:08:08.32 "Wow, this is how God wants to finish the 00:08:08.38\00:08:10.35 work," where we saw that there was a bevy 00:08:10.45\00:08:14.19 of activity-a beehive of activity-in the Bay 00:08:14.29\00:08:17.89 Area. So, we said, "We want to set up the 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.13 Beehive all around the world in every city." 00:08:20.23\00:08:23.16 It was ambitious... [laughter]...to say 00:08:23.90\00:08:26.84 the least. But nonetheless, God has really blessed. 00:08:26.87\00:08:29.47 Oh, if men would praise the Lord for His goodness 00:08:29.57\00:08:31.71 and for His wonderful works in the children of 00:08:31.81\00:08:33.81 men. So, we do praise the Lord for what He's 00:08:33.88\00:08:36.11 done. - Amen. And how long ago did the Beehive 00:08:36.21\00:08:38.18 start? - We started in 2009, officially. We 00:08:38.28\00:08:42.25 became a non-profit organization in 2010, 00:08:42.32\00:08:46.02 and that was the exact same year that we actually 00:08:46.12\00:08:49.22 started in- well, it was in Haiti after that huge 00:08:49.32\00:08:53.53 earthquake. It took off there, took off 00:08:53.60\00:08:57.03 here in the States; I began to do health talks 00:08:57.13\00:08:59.63 and health seminars, and that led to working 00:08:59.70\00:09:01.90 with 3ABN, the TV show From Sickness to Health... 00:09:01.97\00:09:05.17 - I was just going to say, "Do you recognize 00:09:05.24\00:09:06.84 Rico?" From Sickness to Health, which is- 00:09:06.91\00:09:09.44 if you haven't seen that, you definitely need 00:09:09.51\00:09:11.91 to watch it. It's actually on Dare to Dream as 00:09:12.01\00:09:13.88 well as the parent network, 3ABN. So, you definitely 00:09:13.95\00:09:17.62 need to watch that. It is so innovative; it's 00:09:17.65\00:09:20.12 so different. It's refreshing! You're 00:09:20.19\00:09:22.29 giving a lot of great information, but in a 00:09:22.36\00:09:24.89 format that reaches the people! So, it's 00:09:24.96\00:09:27.76 really great. - Wherever I go, people stop and 00:09:27.86\00:09:31.53 they say, "Oh, you're the guy- where's the 00:09:31.63\00:09:33.44 blue guy?" They always wanna know where the 00:09:33.54\00:09:35.34 blue guy is. - Right, right, right; that's true. 00:09:35.40\00:09:38.17 So, from- this whole thing in 2009 with the 00:09:38.24\00:09:42.74 earthquake and all, that's where the Beehive 00:09:42.84\00:09:45.38 actually just got started. - Well, it was... We had 00:09:45.45\00:09:48.55 started on the campus of Arizona State University 00:09:48.65\00:09:51.39 here in the States. So, it was almost like this 00:09:51.49\00:09:53.76 simultaneous kind of thing that took place 00:09:53.86\00:09:56.26 in 2010, actually. What we wanted to do is, 00:09:56.32\00:10:00.73 we wanted to really be data-driven. And what 00:10:00.80\00:10:03.63 I mean by that is, oftentimes, throughout 00:10:03.67\00:10:06.13 the world, people are- you know, before they 00:10:06.17\00:10:08.10 launch a product, they launch a business, they 00:10:08.20\00:10:10.67 want to know what people- what's the trends? 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.91 What's happening out there? How do you take 00:10:12.97\00:10:16.11 the pulse of what people are looking for? And I 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.78 think, sometimes, we don't do enough of that 00:10:18.88\00:10:20.58 in ministry, whereas we are selling the 00:10:20.68\00:10:25.99 greatest product the world has ever seen. 00:10:26.05\00:10:29.26 That's the gospel-the everlasting gospel. So 00:10:29.32\00:10:32.03 therefore, we wanted to see what would happen 00:10:32.09\00:10:35.30 if we tried to do city mission in a country. 00:10:35.40\00:10:40.10 Jonathan's going to talk about what happened 00:10:40.17\00:10:42.47 in Haiti, but we started on the campus of Arizona 00:10:42.54\00:10:44.47 State University and wanted to see what 00:10:44.54\00:10:46.71 would take place if we actually used health to 00:10:46.81\00:10:48.94 reach people on a public university campus. So, 00:10:49.01\00:10:52.38 it started simultaneously, and we just did research 00:10:52.45\00:10:55.82 and development for a few years to see, "What are 00:10:55.88\00:10:59.52 the needs, and how do we meet people where 00:10:59.62\00:11:01.16 they are?" And, really, it just gave us so much 00:11:01.26\00:11:03.46 information, and that led us to actually, 00:11:03.53\00:11:07.00 really, building up the Beehive, but also 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.30 figuring out a cycle of evangelism that we call 00:11:09.36\00:11:14.00 CHAT. I am so excited to tell you about that 00:11:14.04\00:11:17.41 and share that. So, training people to finish 00:11:17.51\00:11:20.08 the work. - Yes! Yes, yes, yes-which is so 00:11:20.14\00:11:22.34 important! And it's so important, again, 00:11:22.41\00:11:24.15 to find out, to get the pulse of the people to 00:11:24.21\00:11:28.05 find out what their needs are and then 00:11:28.12\00:11:29.95 how to design whatever it is that you're going 00:11:30.05\00:11:32.65 to design to meet that need. - Amen. - And 00:11:32.72\00:11:35.16 that's what you guys are doing. - Amen. - So, 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.19 the Beehive is not really just a health 00:11:37.23\00:11:39.76 initiative; it's more than that. - No. It is a 00:11:39.83\00:11:43.40 solution-driven initiative. In other words, whatever 00:11:43.50\00:11:47.60 the problem is- because you'll find that when 00:11:47.67\00:11:50.44 you go to certain places in the world, you know, 00:11:50.54\00:11:52.94 their issue is not- everyone needs good 00:11:53.04\00:11:55.14 health, but not everybody knows that they need 00:11:55.21\00:11:58.51 health in terms of, like, diet and lifestyle. 00:11:58.58\00:12:01.52 - Right. - Sometimes, people just need a 00:12:01.58\00:12:03.12 job! - Mhm. - That will make them healthier. 00:12:03.18\00:12:05.52 - And relieve the stress, right? - Exactly. And 00:12:05.59\00:12:09.36 so, we found that, within the Adventist 00:12:09.42\00:12:14.20 church, we have everything that the world needs to 00:12:14.20\00:12:18.27 solve their problems. We have everything 00:12:18.37\00:12:21.60 they need. If you have financial problems, well, 00:12:21.70\00:12:24.17 guess what? We have a system. If you have 00:12:24.27\00:12:26.64 health problems, we got a system. If you 00:12:26.74\00:12:29.24 got social problems, we got a system! If 00:12:29.31\00:12:31.95 you got family problems... - We got a system. 00:12:32.05\00:12:34.35 - Children, child guidance-come on! 00:12:34.45\00:12:36.48 [laughter] - That's right. - We have something 00:12:36.52\00:12:39.35 for every need. And what we need to start 00:12:39.45\00:12:41.66 to do is utilize, you know, what we have, 00:12:41.72\00:12:46.03 form partnerships, and begin to really 00:12:46.13\00:12:49.10 finish the work. To really get back to it, 00:12:49.16\00:12:51.23 here it is, Christ's Method Alone. Now, 00:12:51.30\00:12:54.20 I know people say that, they toss it around, 00:12:54.30\00:12:56.10 but we really believe it. We've taken it to 00:12:56.17\00:12:57.94 heart, He mingled with people as one who desired their 00:12:57.97\00:13:02.31 good, He met their needs... How do you meet someone's 00:13:02.38\00:13:06.45 needs if you don't mingle with them? If you don't 00:13:06.51\00:13:09.98 spend time with them? You can't just come in 00:13:10.09\00:13:12.02 and pose. "Oh, well, this is what you need! 00:13:12.09\00:13:14.52 You need the gospel!" Yeah, everybody needs 00:13:14.62\00:13:17.23 that, but they don't know they need the 00:13:17.33\00:13:18.69 gospel! "Right now, I'm just going through 00:13:18.76\00:13:20.20 a terrible divorce." "I can't feed my children." 00:13:20.23\00:13:22.63 "I don't have a job." So, how do we begin 00:13:22.73\00:13:25.50 to CHAT with them? And CHAT stands for community, 00:13:25.60\00:13:27.84 health, advocate, training. - Ahh! - How do you 00:13:27.90\00:13:31.64 advocate on behalf of a community that will 00:13:31.71\00:13:34.74 make them healthier financially, physically, 00:13:34.81\00:13:37.85 mentally, spiritually? Amen? - That is beautiful. 00:13:37.95\00:13:43.05 Meeting them at their point of need (just like 00:13:43.12\00:13:45.89 Jesus did), finding out what they need (because 00:13:45.95\00:13:49.22 you have to be in relationship first), 00:13:49.32\00:13:51.23 and then meeting those needs. And that's what 00:13:51.36\00:13:54.83 you're doing that's amazing. And so, what 00:13:54.93\00:13:56.36 is your role, Jonathan, in all of this? What is 00:13:56.40\00:14:00.07 your role with the Beehive? - My role is 00:14:00.14\00:14:03.04 in the country of Haiti, so I'm there all the time; 00:14:03.14\00:14:05.77 been almost 8 years now. Just after the 00:14:05.84\00:14:09.21 earthquake of 2010, which was a devastating 00:14:09.31\00:14:12.81 natural disaster. 350 thousand people killed 00:14:12.88\00:14:16.35 in just a few seconds. Schools collapsed with the 00:14:16.42\00:14:19.02 children inside, churches destroyed, hospitals 00:14:19.05\00:14:21.86 destroyed, just devastation. Scott Therman, one of 00:14:21.92\00:14:25.56 the co-founders of the Beehive, and I went 00:14:25.63\00:14:27.00 to Haiti shortly after that disaster, and the 00:14:27.03\00:14:30.63 UN is driving around in tanks, and people 00:14:30.73\00:14:33.13 are camped out in tents, and just very difficult 00:14:33.20\00:14:35.87 in so many ways. We were lost immediately 00:14:35.94\00:14:39.61 in all the confusion, and someone came and 00:14:39.71\00:14:42.21 knocked on our door as we're sitting in the car. 00:14:42.28\00:14:44.28 We can't communicate, totally lost, praying for 00:14:44.35\00:14:46.35 guidance... Somebody knocks on the door and 00:14:46.41\00:14:48.95 says, "Can I help you guys? You look lost." 00:14:49.02\00:14:50.85 And he says, "Are you Adventist?" And we're 00:14:50.95\00:14:53.36 like, what!? "Yes, we're Adventist." And 00:14:53.42\00:14:55.52 he's like, "Did you know that there's an 00:14:55.56\00:14:57.19 Adventist hospital down the street?" We were 00:14:57.23\00:14:59.39 parked like, right next to the sign like, right 00:14:59.43\00:15:01.50 down the street from the Adventist hospital. He 00:15:01.53\00:15:03.57 takes us to the Adventist hospital, we walk in, and 00:15:03.67\00:15:06.40 it is my friend from high school that I hadn't 00:15:06.50\00:15:08.24 seen for 10 years that is the administrator 00:15:08.30\00:15:10.97 of the hospital - Are you kidding? - And we've 00:15:11.04\00:15:13.24 been staying at hotels, we have like, so many 00:15:13.31\00:15:15.24 problems. We can't communicate, we don't 00:15:15.31\00:15:16.75 have any connections, and he's like, "Oh, you 00:15:16.78\00:15:18.48 can stay here where you have translators 00:15:18.55\00:15:19.88 and food and water and internet," and all these 00:15:19.91\00:15:21.62 things. So, we stayed there, and we started 00:15:21.65\00:15:25.02 in the hallway with all the emergency 00:15:25.09\00:15:26.89 responders. People coming in with problems and 00:15:26.96\00:15:29.92 going out on tarps and just very, very, very 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.13 high, tense situation. And eventually, we 00:15:33.19\00:15:35.93 got ours established and we saw that there 00:15:36.03\00:15:39.70 was a need to help Loma Linda. Loma Linda was 00:15:39.77\00:15:42.70 coming there, and they were trying to get their 00:15:42.74\00:15:44.77 building ready for a class that they were 00:15:44.84\00:15:46.31 going to teach, and another miracle that 00:15:46.37\00:15:48.38 we got connected with them. They needed 00:15:48.48\00:15:50.41 people that could be boots on the ground 00:15:50.51\00:15:52.01 and get their building renovated, and we 00:15:52.08\00:15:54.18 needed to make friends and work. We'd been 00:15:54.22\00:15:56.85 in hotels and in the hallway for some time. 00:15:56.95\00:15:58.99 - When he says "hallway," he means sleeping in the 00:15:59.05\00:16:02.89 hallway. - Literally. Literally in the hallway. 00:16:02.96\00:16:06.39 - We lived in a hallway for 6 months. - In the 00:16:06.46\00:16:08.26 hospital in the hallway. - Let's go back for a 00:16:08.30\00:16:10.67 minute, because what you said... You gave me 00:16:10.70\00:16:12.90 a lot of meat here. What you said was, 00:16:12.97\00:16:15.64 you're sitting in your car, lost, and someone 00:16:15.70\00:16:20.38 comes up to you to the car and gives you directions 00:16:20.48\00:16:25.38 to the Adventist hospital which you were right 00:16:25.45\00:16:28.28 near! - Yeah, we had no idea it was there. 00:16:28.38\00:16:30.29 - I mean, just- how do people not believe in 00:16:30.39\00:16:33.96 God? That is just NOT a series of coincidences. 00:16:34.06\00:16:38.19 It's just not-that somebody would come 00:16:38.33\00:16:41.00 up to you and say, "You guys look lost," and 00:16:41.06\00:16:43.16 you're right near the Adventist hospital, and 00:16:43.23\00:16:46.10 the person that's the administrator is your 00:16:46.17\00:16:47.60 friend from elementary school or high school. 00:16:47.64\00:16:49.97 I mean, it's all God-ordained. So, you ended up being 00:16:50.01\00:16:56.71 in Haiti after the devastation and living 00:16:56.81\00:17:00.55 in- sleeping in hallways. - Yep. - Why were you 00:17:00.58\00:17:04.99 there? What were you there to do? - Our goal 00:17:05.05\00:17:07.62 is to start a city mission and country mission 00:17:07.69\00:17:10.16 outpost/inpost center of influence and try to 00:17:10.26\00:17:14.83 have a vocational training, agriculture 00:17:14.86\00:17:17.60 training, a location that people can get 00:17:17.67\00:17:19.93 trained with CHAT in the States and then 00:17:20.04\00:17:23.17 come to Haiti and practice their training and reach 00:17:23.24\00:17:25.61 the people the best we can. - Aw, that's 00:17:25.67\00:17:27.71 beautiful. What is the situation now in Haiti? 00:17:27.78\00:17:32.11 We know what it was, and I've read that 00:17:32.18\00:17:36.48 there's been such misappropriation of funds 00:17:36.52\00:17:39.52 that funds that were supposed to be used to 00:17:39.62\00:17:43.09 help the people there have been diverted into 00:17:43.16\00:17:46.46 other things and not used for the people there. 00:17:46.53\00:17:51.20 Are they still struggling? Is there still tremendous 00:17:51.27\00:17:53.40 need there? What is the status? - It is so 00:17:53.50\00:17:55.60 difficult. There are so many problems in so 00:17:55.67\00:17:57.91 many areas; everyone is struggling. The people 00:17:57.97\00:18:00.44 that are coming to help are struggling, the 00:18:00.51\00:18:01.84 people that are living there are struggling, 00:18:01.88\00:18:03.21 government's struggling... One way that we've 00:18:03.24\00:18:04.91 found to help was, after the earthquake, there 00:18:04.98\00:18:07.08 was a lot of children that were orphaned. 00:18:07.15\00:18:08.48 So, we found that the struggle was very real 00:18:08.58\00:18:10.95 for these children. They're in broken-down 00:18:11.02\00:18:13.59 homes, they're with no plumbing, no electricity, 00:18:13.62\00:18:15.12 no beds, no food, so we got into these places 00:18:15.19\00:18:18.29 and renovated 12 different locations and helped 500 00:18:18.33\00:18:21.83 kids go to school, have beds, have clothes, have 00:18:21.90\00:18:24.77 food; they started little gardens, they 00:18:24.83\00:18:26.77 started little businesses; we built second stories 00:18:26.84\00:18:29.04 and expanded their structures and repaired 00:18:29.14\00:18:31.51 their structures. And so, we got into helping 00:18:31.57\00:18:34.61 right away there with that area of devastation. 00:18:34.68\00:18:37.68 - Can I jump in? This is what we call CHATing. 00:18:37.78\00:18:40.92 - Ahh. - Helping people to understand that- 00:18:40.95\00:18:44.45 the way that we see this is, everything begins 00:18:44.52\00:18:47.46 with a conversation. That conversation, a 00:18:47.56\00:18:49.42 knock on the door, right? The language 00:18:49.56\00:18:52.16 barrier was there, but God was doing something. 00:18:52.23\00:18:54.63 It began as a conversation; they chatted, but 00:18:54.73\00:18:57.47 what did it lead to? It led to sustainable, 00:18:57.53\00:19:01.00 meaningful, impactful ministry. And I find 00:19:01.10\00:19:05.24 that, a lot of times, our people, they want 00:19:05.34\00:19:08.44 to get into the work, but we just don't know 00:19:08.51\00:19:10.51 how to CHAT. We don't know how to actually 00:19:10.58\00:19:13.31 communicate and come down to what people's 00:19:13.35\00:19:15.02 level- it's in the book Medical Ministry, page 238, 00:19:15.08\00:19:19.75 where it says that meeting people right 00:19:19.82\00:19:22.66 where they are is the gospel ministry. Jesus 00:19:22.72\00:19:27.03 came from heaven, but He became a man. - Right. 00:19:27.13\00:19:30.57 - He spoke our language. He met us right where 00:19:30.67\00:19:33.74 we are. So, what we have to begin to realize- 00:19:33.77\00:19:36.50 and this is what CHATing is all about-is it's not 00:19:36.57\00:19:39.41 coming to people with our lofty and high ideals 00:19:39.47\00:19:43.04 about what they need, but instead meeting them 00:19:43.11\00:19:46.01 on the level where they are. And this is a- 00:19:46.08\00:19:48.28 - Get to know them. - Get to know them! 00:19:48.35\00:19:49.98 Jonathan, he's not saying at all- he's a 00:19:50.09\00:19:52.99 humble brother. I respect that and I appreciate 00:19:53.05\00:19:54.82 that, but this brother LIVES in a war zone. 00:19:54.89\00:19:57.83 He's in a war zone and actually making a 00:19:57.89\00:20:01.23 difference in people's lives. Walk through 00:20:01.30\00:20:03.33 some of the things, because it started in 00:20:03.43\00:20:05.60 the hallway of a hospital. But really- 00:20:05.67\00:20:08.00 walk them through how this has grown into a 00:20:08.04\00:20:11.34 city mission right in Port-au-Prince, and 00:20:11.41\00:20:15.48 then also a country outpost in Bohoc. 00:20:15.54\00:20:19.01 - So, yeah. We started in the hallway. We 00:20:19.11\00:20:20.48 eventually got a patient room, then we eventually 00:20:20.58\00:20:23.08 got a little volunteer area and we started 00:20:23.15\00:20:26.65 making stuff out of shipping pallets, making 00:20:26.72\00:20:29.16 little raised beds. We saw trashed shipping 00:20:29.22\00:20:31.23 pallets, and we saw that there was a need 00:20:31.29\00:20:33.40 for gardening and food, and we know the agricultures 00:20:33.46\00:20:35.66 of the ABCs of education, so we start making 00:20:35.73\00:20:39.23 these little raised beds behind the hospital out 00:20:39.27\00:20:41.10 of shipping pallets and start growing food 00:20:41.17\00:20:43.27 there behind the hospital and sharing food with 00:20:43.34\00:20:44.97 everybody. It's a great way to make friends. 00:20:45.04\00:20:46.81 Everybody likes free veggies. - Yeah, what 00:20:46.91\00:20:50.58 a great idea! - And so that led to us needing 00:20:50.68\00:20:52.21 to expand. We kind of outgrew our stay there 00:20:52.28\00:20:55.38 and we got a place down the street. I 00:20:55.48\00:20:59.29 think we have a picture of Rico and I in the city 00:20:59.35\00:21:02.76 mission that we've now turned into a city mission. 00:21:02.82\00:21:07.23 It is an inpost there for the city, and we 00:21:07.30\00:21:10.73 make a bunch of stuff now out of shipping 00:21:10.83\00:21:12.37 pallets, taking garbage and teaching young 00:21:12.47\00:21:14.84 people and people with our jobs how to make 00:21:14.94\00:21:17.27 these amazing things out of shipping pallets. 00:21:17.31\00:21:20.28 So, everything there in the picture is all 00:21:20.38\00:21:22.24 out of shipping pallets. 00:21:22.28\00:21:24.58 different items all made from recycled 00:21:24.65\00:21:27.08 wood all by people who are not really skilled 00:21:27.18\00:21:29.98 or educated in that area. 25-30 people 00:21:30.05\00:21:33.42 employed just at that one location. That, then, 00:21:33.52\00:21:36.09 is helping all their families. So, if you 00:21:36.19\00:21:38.63 have 25 or 30 people that have a job all 00:21:38.66\00:21:41.10 the time, they're going to support the kids and 00:21:41.16\00:21:43.10 the cousin and the mother and the father. 00:21:43.16\00:21:45.63 So, it averages, maybe, 5 people supported by 00:21:45.73\00:21:48.20 one person having a job. So, that's CHATing 00:21:48.24\00:21:51.01 and helping and ministering to 150 people just with 00:21:51.07\00:21:54.64 the woodshop there. Then we're learning 00:21:54.74\00:21:56.21 our own skills, we're building our own things, 00:21:56.28\00:21:58.01 and we help a lot of other ministries by 00:21:58.11\00:22:00.98 building their stuff. - That is huge. - And then 00:22:01.02\00:22:03.22 after that starts going, God led us to some 00:22:03.28\00:22:07.39 property 3 hours north of Port-au-Prince where 00:22:07.46\00:22:10.33 we now have a 50-acre piece of land that we're 00:22:10.36\00:22:13.60 building buildings and starting classes and 00:22:13.70\00:22:16.83 raising animals and have 23 different 00:22:16.93\00:22:20.00 types of fruit trees, and people are all coming 00:22:20.10\00:22:22.17 to visit. Probably have a picture of a group 00:22:22.24\00:22:24.34 that came there to visit. Loma Linda has 00:22:24.44\00:22:26.54 been a very supportive and very great partnership 00:22:26.64\00:22:29.34 that they have come 6 years in a row, and 00:22:29.44\00:22:33.58 there they are at the outdoor kitchen there 00:22:33.62\00:22:35.95 at the country mission, having a great trip. 00:22:36.02\00:22:39.55 - And these are Loma Linda students? - Yes. 00:22:39.65\00:22:41.79 They're physical therapy students. They have a 00:22:41.86\00:22:44.96 program at the Adventist hospital in the Adventist 00:22:45.03\00:22:47.93 university there in the city where they're 00:22:47.96\00:22:49.86 teaching rehab tech- training rehab tech 00:22:50.00\00:22:53.20 people. - That's incredible. Leslie, 00:22:53.27\00:22:56.00 I know you've been sitting here patiently. 00:22:56.07\00:22:58.34 We're going to come back, 'cause we have 00:22:58.41\00:22:59.74 some more pictures that you're going to 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.31 show. I just want to talk to Leslie a bit 00:23:01.38\00:23:03.55 about what your position is and your role is 00:23:03.58\00:23:06.65 with the Beehive. - Well, maybe about 00:23:06.72\00:23:10.49 2013, we were asked to come to a church 00:23:10.52\00:23:12.85 upstate in New York to help them develop 00:23:12.92\00:23:14.66 a center of influence. I had never heard of 00:23:14.72\00:23:17.43 the Beehive or anything like that, and so we 00:23:17.46\00:23:19.76 were doing it the hard way. We were developing 00:23:19.79\00:23:21.26 curricula and things like that to train the 00:23:21.33\00:23:23.43 people how to get into the communities and 00:23:23.53\00:23:25.83 do this work according to Christ's method. And 00:23:25.90\00:23:28.04 then one day, I receive a text message from a 00:23:28.14\00:23:31.11 number that I didn't recognize, and it 00:23:31.17\00:23:32.71 just had a link; that's it. It was from- this 00:23:32.77\00:23:36.48 was in 2015 and was the August 2015 issue 00:23:36.54\00:23:40.98 of the Review. On the cover was Jared and 00:23:41.05\00:23:46.72 Rico, and I'm like, "Who are these guys? 00:23:46.76\00:23:48.99 Really?" [laughter] And so I go to their 00:23:49.06\00:23:52.86 page and I'm like, "You gotta be kidding 00:23:52.96\00:23:54.30 me! These guys have this whole training 00:23:54.30\00:23:56.46 regime to prepare Seventh-Day Adventists 00:23:56.60\00:23:58.53 to go and do the work in the communities that 00:23:58.63\00:24:01.70 they serve on an ongoing sustainable basis using 00:24:01.77\00:24:04.61 health focus outreach?" So, the group that I 00:24:04.67\00:24:07.78 was working with, I said, "You guys"- I 00:24:07.84\00:24:09.41 sent them all this article. They're like, 00:24:09.48\00:24:10.95 "Where'd you get thi"- I was like, "I don't know 00:24:11.01\00:24:12.35 who sent this to me!" [laughter] To this day, 00:24:12.38\00:24:14.52 this is 5 years later, I still don't know who 00:24:14.58\00:24:17.49 actually sent this text. It actually has opened 00:24:17.52\00:24:20.86 up an opportunity and a new world for me and 00:24:20.89\00:24:25.39 the people that I work with at the trust. 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.20 Our goal right now is to take what it is 00:24:27.23\00:24:30.07 that we see Jonathan doing and bringing it 00:24:30.13\00:24:32.13 here to the United States. But again, 00:24:32.23\00:24:34.20 it starts with training. - So, your group, then, 00:24:34.24\00:24:39.61 does the training? - No, we do the training. 00:24:39.64\00:24:42.51 It's an online training program, and, really, 00:24:42.58\00:24:45.98 it's a whole cycle of evangelism. I'm just 00:24:46.08\00:24:48.02 kind of like- just give you a sense of what 00:24:48.08\00:24:49.52 that looks like. We start with revival. We need 00:24:49.62\00:24:52.79 to revive our churches, to wake them up out 00:24:52.85\00:24:55.06 of their sleeping, right? So, we actually 00:24:55.12\00:24:57.23 hold a rally. And when we, in the second segment, 00:24:57.29\00:24:59.89 when we're talking, we'll bring out a couple who 00:24:59.96\00:25:02.23 actually had been right in the thick of it, and 00:25:02.30\00:25:05.00 they orchestrated a rally (I don't want to 00:25:05.10\00:25:07.80 steal their thunder too much), but 500 people 00:25:07.87\00:25:10.61 from 16 churches showed up in one high school 00:25:10.71\00:25:13.88 location. We're like, "How do we finish 00:25:13.91\00:25:16.75 this work?" So, they'll talk about that, but 00:25:16.78\00:25:18.71 it starts with that revival, then people 00:25:18.78\00:25:21.32 go online and they do a course online where 00:25:21.38\00:25:24.42 they learn about, basically, the Great Controversy 00:25:24.49\00:25:28.72 that we are in and what that all means 00:25:28.79\00:25:31.33 and what it all entails in terms of, you know, 00:25:31.39\00:25:34.50 the work that God has called us to do, how 00:25:34.56\00:25:36.83 we have to put aside our own desires and 00:25:36.93\00:25:41.14 die to self in order to really do this work, to 00:25:41.20\00:25:43.87 really understand and appreciate the righteousness 00:25:43.97\00:25:47.74 of Christ. And having Christ as our righteousness 00:25:47.81\00:25:50.75 to actually do the work... You know, people will 00:25:50.81\00:25:53.31 say to you sometimes, "Well, you know? I'm 00:25:53.38\00:25:54.92 really not a speaker, and I don't really... 00:25:54.98\00:25:56.95 That's not my thing. I just kind of stay in 00:25:56.99\00:25:58.82 the..." When Jesus spoke, He says, "You 00:25:58.89\00:26:01.19 know what- the words that I speak, they're 00:26:01.22\00:26:02.56 not my own. The work that I do is not my work; 00:26:02.59\00:26:05.13 it's the Father's." He's trying to help us 00:26:05.19\00:26:07.13 understand that what we can do, it's not based 00:26:07.13\00:26:10.00 on our own strength; it's what God does through 00:26:10.07\00:26:12.47 us. So, really, the course is all about 00:26:12.50\00:26:14.74 allowing God to use you as a broken vessel. He 00:26:14.77\00:26:18.57 gets all the glory when that happens, right? 00:26:18.67\00:26:20.38 - Yes! Yes, yes. And there are so many people, 00:26:20.48\00:26:21.94 like you said, who feel that they're not able 00:26:22.04\00:26:24.65 to do this; but it's the power of God that gives 00:26:24.71\00:26:27.45 you the ability to those He calls; He 00:26:27.52\00:26:30.82 equips. He's not just going to put you out 00:26:30.89\00:26:33.22 there without equipping you to do the job. So, 00:26:33.29\00:26:36.12 that is amazing. - Well, you know what- when you 00:26:36.19\00:26:38.96 think about it, God gets the glory when He takes 00:26:38.99\00:26:41.53 someone who says, "I'm really shy." I'm a shy 00:26:41.60\00:26:44.60 person! People never believe me when I say 00:26:44.70\00:26:47.00 that. I am! I am. I'm a very shy person. If 00:26:47.04\00:26:50.87 you really knew me, I'm a VERY shy person. But 00:26:50.94\00:26:53.54 I believe that when the power of God takes hold 00:26:53.64\00:26:57.81 of you, you can do anything! It doesn't 00:26:57.88\00:27:00.75 matter. So when people say, "You know what... 00:27:00.85\00:27:02.65 That's not my thing." People have to get out 00:27:02.75\00:27:06.15 of their comfort zone and get into the Comforter's 00:27:06.22\00:27:08.62 zone. Come on, somebody; say amen! - Come on, now! 00:27:08.69\00:27:12.89 - Because when you do that, God will work 00:27:12.96\00:27:14.63 through you. Amen? - That's right, amen. 00:27:14.73\00:27:16.43 So, you and Leslie- - We work together. 00:27:16.50\00:27:20.97 He's a sales guy. That's his background 00:27:21.07\00:27:26.01 before the Lord grabbed ahold of him, and he 00:27:26.04\00:27:29.41 has the ability...he has a unique set of 00:27:29.48\00:27:32.81 gifts and skills in terms of going out and 00:27:32.88\00:27:35.75 just- the man will go without sleep, without 00:27:35.82\00:27:38.92 rest; he won't break any health laws, amen? 00:27:38.99\00:27:40.76 [laughter] But nonetheless, he will drive to Canada, 00:27:40.86\00:27:44.99 he will drive to- you just drove to Nova Scotia? 00:27:45.09\00:27:47.10 From New York City, from upstate New York. 00:27:48.53\00:27:51.23 He will go and go and go to tell people about 00:27:51.30\00:27:54.27 how they can get into this work, and nothing 00:27:54.34\00:27:57.37 stops him. So, when we connected, he was 00:27:57.47\00:27:59.84 exactly what we needed in terms of just getting 00:27:59.91\00:28:01.84 the word out; and now, from that, just tell 00:28:01.91\00:28:04.71 them about the partnership that had developed as 00:28:04.78\00:28:06.78 a result of some of the work the Lord has 00:28:06.85\00:28:08.55 been doing through you. - Well, praise the Lord. 00:28:08.62\00:28:10.32 A lot of what has happened is just going and telling 00:28:10.35\00:28:12.89 folks that, "Hey, you know what, we have a 00:28:12.95\00:28:14.99 work to do; we've been created for a specific 00:28:15.09\00:28:16.86 purpose and specific reason for the times 00:28:16.89\00:28:19.29 that we live, and that there's no getting around 00:28:19.36\00:28:22.20 it and that as Seventh-Day Adventists, we have this 00:28:22.26\00:28:24.17 awesome responsibility to be an asset to the 00:28:24.27\00:28:27.24 communities that we serve and to the 00:28:27.27\00:28:29.34 world. We started to speak to conference 00:28:29.40\00:28:33.04 workers, conference officials, union officials, and I've 00:28:33.07\00:28:37.15 written as many as 15 letters to one guy. - Wow. 00:28:37.25\00:28:40.32 [laughter] - I'll follow up till you tell me to 00:28:40.42\00:28:44.39 go away. That's my sales background. But 00:28:44.45\00:28:46.89 the whole idea is, this is what we've been called 00:28:46.96\00:28:48.96 to do. How can you help us to accomplish 00:28:48.99\00:28:50.93 this as the president of the Atlantic Union? 00:28:50.99\00:28:53.43 G. Earl Knight supports what it is that we've 00:28:53.50\00:28:55.13 been doing as a conference. Danielle Anore from 00:28:55.20\00:28:58.93 Northeastern Conference. And Northeastern 00:28:59.00\00:29:03.04 Conference, at their last worker's meeting, 00:29:03.10\00:29:04.64 said, "We believe that Christ's method is the 00:29:04.71\00:29:07.68 way that we are going to finish this work. We 00:29:07.74\00:29:10.01 want to expose all 60,000." They almost 00:29:10.08\00:29:12.68 have 60,000 members, 200+ churches in 00:29:12.71\00:29:15.45 Northeastern Conference. And Northeastern 00:29:15.52\00:29:17.82 Conference and Southern New England Conferences 00:29:17.89\00:29:19.72 are working together in the shared territories, 00:29:19.79\00:29:21.82 because we need a mobilized, well-trained group of 00:29:21.89\00:29:25.79 people to go into the communities, into the 00:29:25.86\00:29:27.66 homes and actually developing meaningful 00:29:27.73\00:29:31.00 strategic alliances with government, with 00:29:31.07\00:29:33.64 education, and telling them, "We are Seventh-Day 00:29:33.67\00:29:35.57 Adventist. This is what we bring to the 00:29:35.60\00:29:37.11 table. This is how we can improve the health 00:29:37.14\00:29:39.04 of your community, and we're not charging you 00:29:39.11\00:29:42.21 anything, 'cause God has sent us to do this 00:29:42.28\00:29:44.38 work and no one else has been sent to do 00:29:44.45\00:29:46.82 this work." And so, it's been a tremendous 00:29:46.85\00:29:49.15 blessing to see the response of not only 00:29:49.25\00:29:52.02 church officials. One of the quotes that has 00:29:52.09\00:29:55.22 really motivated me to just go, go, go, is 00:29:55.26\00:29:58.63 taken from Counsels for the Church, page 00:29:58.73\00:30:01.50 58, paragraph 1. "The work of God in this 00:30:01.60\00:30:04.27 Earth can never be finished..." 00:30:04.37\00:30:06.03 ...that this is an all-hands-on-deck. This is- 00:30:12.94\00:30:15.28 there's no time for us to bicker about what 00:30:15.34\00:30:17.88 was- this is now. Let's work together 00:30:17.98\00:30:21.42 now, let's get this work done, and let's 00:30:21.52\00:30:24.25 go to heaven, because there is an end to this, 00:30:24.29\00:30:27.62 and we're a part to this Great Controversy 00:30:27.72\00:30:30.23 between Christ and Satan. We're on the 00:30:30.29\00:30:33.19 right side and we need to go on the winning 00:30:33.26\00:30:35.26 side. - That's right. - We need to let people 00:30:35.33\00:30:37.67 know that they have a role; Seventh-Day 00:30:37.70\00:30:39.83 Adventists have a role. It's not just returning 00:30:39.90\00:30:41.77 the tithe or going to church. Jesus never 00:30:41.84\00:30:44.57 sent a proxy; He always went Himself. And we 00:30:44.64\00:30:47.81 need to go ourselves. So, what CHAT really 00:30:47.84\00:30:51.68 does is it creates authentic opportunities 00:30:51.78\00:30:54.18 for Seventh-Day Adventists to learn 00:30:54.25\00:30:55.68 how to engage the community sustainably, 00:30:55.75\00:30:58.49 long-term; not just, "Hey, we're having a 00:30:58.55\00:31:00.76 health expo! Come and join us, and then we'll 00:31:00.86\00:31:02.66 see you next year for the next health expo." 00:31:02.72\00:31:04.56 That's not authentic ministry that we as 00:31:04.69\00:31:07.60 Seventh-Day Adventists have been called to do. 00:31:07.73\00:31:10.03 Jesus was in the community 365 for 3-and-a-half 00:31:10.07\00:31:13.70 years. We're supposed to follow His example, 00:31:13.80\00:31:17.11 and we should be in the community 365! 00:31:17.17\00:31:19.71 Seventh-Day Adventists need to become important 00:31:20.84\00:31:22.91 and relevant in the day-to-day lives of 00:31:22.98\00:31:25.05 the people that their churches serve. - That's 00:31:25.15\00:31:29.22 very true. You know, if your church is in 00:31:29.32\00:31:32.79 a community and people in the surrounding area 00:31:32.89\00:31:35.19 don't know that that church is there, you're 00:31:35.26\00:31:37.93 not doing your job. That's one of the things- 00:31:37.99\00:31:40.96 - And too much of that happens, by the way. 00:31:41.06\00:31:42.56 - Absolutely! Would the community miss- if, 00:31:42.66\00:31:47.10 for some reason, the church shut down, would 00:31:47.17\00:31:49.47 the community miss that church? And if the answer 00:31:49.54\00:31:52.61 is no and they don't even know that we are 00:31:52.71\00:31:55.91 there, then we have a big problem! And what 00:31:55.98\00:31:58.55 I'm hearing you say is that we have to- let's 00:31:58.65\00:32:03.05 get that fire going. Let's get that fire 00:32:03.15\00:32:06.09 going. Let's get that involvement, that 00:32:06.15\00:32:08.96 revival going, because if we are revived- too 00:32:09.06\00:32:14.83 many of us are asleep at the wheel. We are 00:32:14.93\00:32:17.93 asleep. We're just lethargic, we just- 00:32:18.03\00:32:20.30 and we need to have that Holy Ghost revival going 00:32:20.40\00:32:26.21 so that we have that energy to do what God 00:32:26.31\00:32:29.88 has called us to do. The Lord is coming back 00:32:29.94\00:32:31.81 here, and people need to know about the Lord! 00:32:31.91\00:32:35.22 Go ahead. - Well, there's a quote sister 00:32:35.28\00:32:36.89 White said that many in our churches would 00:32:36.95\00:32:38.49 do this work if they were taught. This is 00:32:38.59\00:32:41.42 where CHAT comes in. It's actually creating 00:32:41.52\00:32:44.09 the platform for us to be taught how to do 00:32:44.19\00:32:47.46 this work, not as a hit-or-miss but as a 00:32:47.56\00:32:50.10 well-oiled machine to do this comprehensively. 00:32:50.20\00:32:53.03 I read an article in 2013 by Ted Wilson 00:32:53.13\00:32:56.20 called, "Big Cities, Bigger Vision," and 00:32:56.30\00:32:59.17 it really helped me to understand that the 00:32:59.24\00:33:01.44 world church and I have the exact same mission 00:33:01.51\00:33:04.65 as a member of the church. And how do 00:33:04.71\00:33:06.48 we work together with the world church with 00:33:06.55\00:33:08.82 our conferences, with our unions, with our 00:33:08.85\00:33:10.19 pastors, in order to do this work on an 00:33:10.29\00:33:12.25 ongoing, sustainable basis? And it requires 00:33:12.35\00:33:14.29 that we demonstrate the love for each other 00:33:14.36\00:33:16.32 that the Bible says that we should so that 00:33:16.39\00:33:18.59 people will know that we are Christ's disciples. 00:33:18.66\00:33:20.90 If we do this work once and for all, we'd- 00:33:20.93\00:33:23.87 and I look at it like this: I used to be a 00:33:23.97\00:33:26.03 competitive athlete, and I want to win. I 00:33:26.10\00:33:28.64 never went to a track meeting and said, "Oh, 00:33:28.74\00:33:31.44 I'm gonna get a bronze today!" I came to get 00:33:31.57\00:33:34.68 the bronze? No! I'm going for the gold. 00:33:34.74\00:33:36.91 Jesus has promised us the gold of the kingdom, 00:33:37.01\00:33:40.48 so what I'm hoping is that people will recognize 00:33:40.58\00:33:43.12 that Adventism is not a spectator's sport; 00:33:43.18\00:33:46.72 this is an all-hands-on-deck, and you need to learn your 00:33:46.82\00:33:49.69 role so that you can play a meaningful part 00:33:49.79\00:33:53.03 in finishing the work that God has called 00:33:53.13\00:33:55.66 us to do as a people. - That's beautiful. 00:33:55.76\00:33:57.87 - You know what, there's something that I got 00:33:57.93\00:33:59.30 from Leslie. He said that we were on a 00:33:59.37\00:34:01.64 conference call one day. He says, "You know 00:34:01.70\00:34:03.17 what?" with the same passion that you see here, 00:34:03.24\00:34:05.77 "You know what? If you're in the military, 00:34:05.84\00:34:08.11 they don't seek to take a city and not talk to 00:34:08.18\00:34:11.68 each other!" He says, "If you're going to take 00:34:11.75\00:34:15.12 a city, all hands on deck, all the units 00:34:15.18\00:34:18.02 are working together, you don't have a unit 00:34:18.09\00:34:20.06 over there and a unit over here and they're 00:34:20.09\00:34:21.46 like, 'What are you guys doing?' 'Oh, well, 00:34:21.52\00:34:23.46 we're doing our thing over here.'" They work 00:34:23.53\00:34:26.16 in tandem; they work in conjunction with one 00:34:26.26\00:34:28.83 another. And this is really- it's a coordinated 00:34:28.90\00:34:31.77 effort, and that's really the heart of what 00:34:31.87\00:34:33.60 we're doing. As we talk to conferences- 00:34:33.70\00:34:36.34 and wait till you talk to the couple that's 00:34:36.40\00:34:38.87 coming up in the second segment of the show- 00:34:38.97\00:34:40.68 how we're setting up evangelism zones where 00:34:40.74\00:34:43.04 entire conferences have bought into this, and 00:34:43.08\00:34:46.25 they're trying to mobilize the people. 00:34:46.28\00:34:47.65 It's really within Ted Wilson's idea of 00:34:47.72\00:34:50.35 total member involvement. So, we'll talk some 00:34:50.45\00:34:53.82 more about that. - Yes, yes; for sure. So, 00:34:53.86\00:34:55.72 what you're saying is the importance of 00:34:55.79\00:34:59.09 partnering - the importance of, you 00:34:59.16\00:35:02.23 know, if I have this ministry over here, 00:35:02.26\00:35:04.97 and you have this one over here, and somebody 00:35:05.03\00:35:07.57 else has this one over here, why can't we 00:35:07.64\00:35:09.50 come together? - We cannot finish the work 00:35:09.57\00:35:11.67 until we partner. - And make a difference. - Because 00:35:11.77\00:35:13.88 Jesus said, and you kind of quoted it there, Jesus 00:35:13.98\00:35:17.35 said that, "They will know that I've come 00:35:17.38\00:35:20.05 when you're one." We're all scattered and all over 00:35:20.12\00:35:23.69 the place, then it doesn't represent the very 00:35:23.79\00:35:26.55 character of God. He says, "The Father and 00:35:26.62\00:35:28.72 I, we're one!" And I pray that you also 00:35:28.79\00:35:32.09 would be one so that the world will know 00:35:32.16\00:35:34.60 that I've come. But unless they see that- 00:35:34.66\00:35:37.97 'cause really, at the end of the day, Yvonne, 00:35:38.03\00:35:40.90 the point of the whole gospel is that the 00:35:40.94\00:35:45.04 world would get a revelation of the 00:35:45.14\00:35:47.84 character of Jesus; and that character is 00:35:47.91\00:35:50.45 one where there's one love, there's one mission. 00:35:50.51\00:35:54.08 - Yes. Yes, and that is doable. - Absolutely. 00:35:55.95\00:36:00.09 - And you guys are doing it. You're bringing 00:36:00.19\00:36:04.19 people together through the power of the Holy 00:36:04.26\00:36:07.36 Spirit - bringing people together to finish this 00:36:07.40\00:36:10.00 work. Jonathan, you were over there in Haiti, 00:36:10.07\00:36:13.13 living in a situation where- tell us about 00:36:13.20\00:36:15.87 your living conditions, how you're living. 00:36:15.97\00:36:18.81 - Talk about that and also let them know 00:36:18.87\00:36:20.88 some of those pictures of what partnerships 00:36:20.91\00:36:23.35 have wrought. - Yeah. To start with the 00:36:23.38\00:36:26.18 partnerships, we're seeing a lot of benefit 00:36:26.25\00:36:27.78 with coming together and partnering and 00:36:27.82\00:36:29.35 helping each other to move the work forward, 00:36:29.42\00:36:31.92 Loma Linda... - We have a picture about that. 00:36:32.02\00:36:34.06 - Yeah, it showed the Loma Linda students 00:36:35.56\00:36:36.96 that there was one of them. We have a lot 00:36:37.03\00:36:40.83 of good partnerships there; several ministries 00:36:40.90\00:36:43.03 and churches and schools, Walla Walla and Andrews 00:36:43.10\00:36:45.83 and Southern and the local university, the 00:36:45.90\00:36:49.40 local ADRA, a local hospital, other ministries, 00:36:49.44\00:36:52.91 Quiet Hour, Restore a Child... Lots of 00:36:53.01\00:36:56.18 different Adventist ministries and partnerships 00:36:56.24\00:36:58.48 have been a huge blessing. We've talked some 00:36:58.55\00:37:00.75 about the city work, city mission, and in the 00:37:00.85\00:37:03.82 countryside is really where we're passionate 00:37:03.85\00:37:06.45 and excited about people coming to CHAT 00:37:06.52\00:37:09.26 with the community. We're feeding everyone 00:37:09.32\00:37:12.49 that we can from the community. We have a 00:37:12.53\00:37:14.46 picture of a bunch of kids that have come 00:37:14.56\00:37:16.30 to the kitchen there to be fed. I found that 00:37:16.40\00:37:21.07 before they can be spiritually fed, they 00:37:21.14\00:37:23.84 need to be fed so that they can be nourished 00:37:23.91\00:37:27.01 and actually hear what you're saying. - Absolutely. 00:37:27.11\00:37:29.54 - They really are hungry for actual food, and 00:37:29.61\00:37:32.35 then they realize that they're hungry for the 00:37:32.41\00:37:33.92 spiritual food. - That's right. - One of our 00:37:34.02\00:37:36.79 great examples of the CHAT program and action 00:37:36.89\00:37:40.66 there in Haiti is one of our, now, 00:37:40.76\00:37:42.89 full-time workers. She was coming to a 00:37:42.96\00:37:45.59 clinic time. She's so sick and the kids are 00:37:45.66\00:37:48.16 sick, and no one can understand why she's 00:37:48.23\00:37:49.66 sick. We're like, "Let's go to your house and 00:37:49.73\00:37:51.63 see if we can help." So we went to her house, 00:37:51.67\00:37:54.10 and we get to her house and we see that her whole 00:37:54.20\00:37:56.57 roof is made out of natural fiber stuff 00:37:56.67\00:37:59.67 like banana leaves and sticks, and it's 00:37:59.71\00:38:01.91 got so many problems. There's little animals 00:38:02.01\00:38:04.41 in there, little bugs, and mold; the house 00:38:04.51\00:38:08.02 is made out of sticks. It's just an amazing 00:38:08.12\00:38:11.15 situation that this woman and her children 00:38:11.22\00:38:13.59 were in. So, we raised money, fixed the roof/ 00:38:13.69\00:38:15.82 repaired the roof, and she's not sick anymore. 00:38:15.89\00:38:18.29 Now, she's coming to church, and her kids- 00:38:18.36\00:38:21.13 she's not Adventist; kids are not Adventist; 00:38:21.23\00:38:23.13 her friends and neighbors, not Adventist- 00:38:23.20\00:38:25.20 and now they're coming to church, in a church 00:38:25.30\00:38:27.74 where we actually did a bunch of work and 00:38:27.80\00:38:30.21 fixed a bunch of stuff. The church close by had 00:38:30.24\00:38:32.57 a dirt floor, and we put a concrete floor and we 00:38:32.61\00:38:36.44 built some benches. The guys, actually, 00:38:36.51\00:38:39.48 that built the benches, they said, "We're going 00:38:39.55\00:38:42.75 to come to church on Sabbath." They're not 00:38:42.78\00:38:44.39 Adventist. Like, "We're going to come to church 00:38:44.42\00:38:46.15 on Sabbath. We built the bench...we're going 00:38:46.19\00:38:47.76 to sit on that bench." [laughter] - That's 00:38:47.82\00:38:51.36 great. "We're not going to let that bench go 00:38:51.43\00:38:53.63 to waste." - They came in, they're sitting on 00:38:53.70\00:38:55.80 the bench, they're so happy...the kids and 00:38:55.90\00:38:57.77 young people and non-Adventists, sitting 00:38:57.87\00:38:59.80 in church on Sabbath, 'cause they're proud 00:38:59.87\00:39:01.87 of their work. - Aw, that's good. You guys 00:39:01.90\00:39:03.57 are doing an amazing job. We're so grateful 00:39:03.64\00:39:07.91 for what you're doing. We have some music, 00:39:07.98\00:39:11.55 and then we have some other guests that 00:39:11.61\00:39:13.38 you'd want to talk to about what they're 00:39:13.45\00:39:15.78 doing as well. So, thank you both, Jonathan 00:39:15.88\00:39:18.15 and Leslie, for all that you're doing. Let's 00:39:18.25\00:39:20.79 listen to Sam Ocampo again as he plays "The Lighthouse." 00:39:20.89\00:39:26.49 - Thank you so much, Sam, for that beautiful 00:43:46.65\00:43:48.69 song, "The Lighthouse." And that's what we're 00:43:48.76\00:43:51.03 to be! We're to be a lighthouse in the darkness. 00:43:51.13\00:43:54.30 There are so many people who don't know 00:43:54.36\00:43:56.26 about Jesus who need to, and we have two 00:43:56.33\00:43:59.00 guests here who are being lighthouses in 00:43:59.07\00:44:02.74 their communities. Welcome to the Domdrowskis 00:44:02.84\00:44:06.88 We have Tom and Sandra. - Thank you. - So nice 00:44:06.98\00:44:09.68 of you to be here. Tell us what you're 00:44:09.74\00:44:11.81 doing. - Well, we are trying to develop CHAT 00:44:11.88\00:44:15.38 and create a model of evangelism for the 00:44:15.48\00:44:19.15 cities. Most of the people in the world 00:44:19.25\00:44:21.72 today are congregating in cities, they're living 00:44:21.79\00:44:24.03 in cities, and we have a work to do to 00:44:24.13\00:44:26.26 evangelize people, to tell people the good 00:44:26.29\00:44:28.96 news, and so the natural strategy is go to the 00:44:29.06\00:44:32.67 cities. We've gotta do it in the cities. 00:44:32.77\00:44:34.60 And the challenge that we're having is that 00:44:34.64\00:44:37.07 many of our churches work as silos-kind of 00:44:37.11\00:44:40.64 independently of one another-and what we're 00:44:40.74\00:44:43.11 trying to do is break out of that silo mentality, 00:44:43.21\00:44:45.15 saying, "Listen. There's no one church that can 00:44:45.21\00:44:47.18 work the city by itself, so we've got to do this 00:44:47.28\00:44:50.25 together. We've got to be a team." - Yes. So 00:44:50.29\00:44:51.99 how did you do it? - Well, I was introduced 00:44:52.02\00:44:54.02 to CHAT - Rico came to the Southern New 00:44:54.12\00:44:56.52 England conference camp meeting in 2017. Very 00:44:56.59\00:44:59.03 grateful for our conference administrators 00:44:59.13\00:45:00.93 for inviting him. I had not known of him and 00:45:00.96\00:45:03.97 that ministry until that point in time, so I was 00:45:04.07\00:45:06.47 introduced to him through Leslie; Leslie 00:45:06.53\00:45:09.10 was there, attending the camp meeting. He 00:45:09.17\00:45:11.11 invited me to a meeting where we were with the 00:45:11.21\00:45:13.24 conference president, union officials, and 00:45:13.38\00:45:15.44 Rico was there. They proposed this idea. 00:45:15.54\00:45:18.01 They said, "We've got these urban areas within 00:45:18.08\00:45:20.15 the Southern New England conference: Boston, 00:45:20.22\00:45:22.08 Hartford, Worcester, Providence of Rhode 00:45:22.15\00:45:25.02 Island. Can we try to do this? Can we try 00:45:25.09\00:45:27.36 to tackle this?" Because CHAT had been done 00:45:27.39\00:45:29.59 before as kind of like on a one-church model, 00:45:29.66\00:45:32.63 but it had never been done in a teamwork 00:45:32.69\00:45:35.86 model with multiple churches. So I said, 00:45:35.93\00:45:38.90 "Yeah, let's give it a shot." We have a 00:45:38.97\00:45:40.40 good relationship with our regional conference 00:45:40.44\00:45:42.27 in the area, Northeastern Conference, and we 00:45:42.34\00:45:44.61 decided to reach the hand out and say, "Let's 00:45:44.71\00:45:48.91 do this. Let's try to take this relationship 00:45:48.98\00:45:51.58 to a whole new level in working in the Greater 00:45:51.65\00:45:54.22 Hartford area"; that's where the Connecticut 00:45:54.28\00:45:55.82 Valley churches... I actually have a two-church 00:45:55.85\00:45:57.62 district- again, can't forget my sister church, 00:45:57.72\00:45:59.72 Rockville-Tolland. But it's a- we live kind of in 00:45:59.82\00:46:03.76 the shadow of Hartford, so what we're trying 00:46:03.79\00:46:06.93 to do is create the Greater Hartford 00:46:07.03\00:46:08.33 evangelism zone. We have 16 churches, 00:46:08.40\00:46:12.10 primarily, in that area. They're on 00:46:12.20\00:46:14.27 board with it. From both conferences, the pastors 00:46:14.37\00:46:17.31 are supportive of the idea, and we're starting 00:46:17.41\00:46:19.64 a work more collaboratively and going- we're right 00:46:19.74\00:46:22.24 now in the training session, the second 00:46:22.31\00:46:24.45 phase of this CHAT cycle of evangelism. 00:46:24.51\00:46:26.61 - What I love about this couple is that, 00:46:26.72\00:46:28.92 as a pastor couple, pastoring two churches... 00:46:28.98\00:46:35.36 - Ah, now, see? I should've introduced 00:46:35.42\00:46:37.43 you as Pastor. - Oh, he's a pastor! - Oh, 00:46:37.53\00:46:39.69 I'm sorry. I apologize. - Again, you were just 00:46:39.76\00:46:42.10 saying supporting ministry working with 00:46:42.20\00:46:44.23 the local church and conference. So, 00:46:44.30\00:46:47.87 partnerships. That's what we're trying to 00:46:47.97\00:46:50.37 model. - That's great. - Yeah, it's beautiful. 00:46:50.47\00:46:52.07 - And the beauty of it is that he himself 00:46:52.11\00:46:54.81 has taken the training. - Yes! - As the leader 00:46:54.88\00:46:57.75 of the church, don't say, "Well, you all need to 00:46:57.81\00:46:59.71 do it"- no! He's doing... He's online, taking the 00:46:59.75\00:47:02.15 training. But Sandra's going to tell us, real 00:47:02.25\00:47:04.95 quickly, about the rally that they had. 00:47:05.05\00:47:08.92 - Okay. - I didn't know what to expect when 00:47:09.02\00:47:10.39 they said, "You're going to come up here. 00:47:10.46\00:47:11.79 It's going to be held at a high school..." 00:47:11.83\00:47:13.26 Take it away. - Well, the first step in that 00:47:13.33\00:47:16.33 CHAT cycle of evangelism that you saw is the 00:47:16.43\00:47:18.67 Great Health Controversy weekend. Rico comes 00:47:18.77\00:47:21.07 in and gives a weekend, and it's revival for the 00:47:21.14\00:47:24.01 church members. This is not where you invite 00:47:24.11\00:47:26.11 the public; this is to revive and educate the 00:47:26.14\00:47:29.71 church members and to put a taste in their 00:47:29.81\00:47:31.65 mouth to say, "Yes, I want to be trained." 00:47:31.71\00:47:34.52 And so he comes up, and meanwhile, we've 00:47:34.58\00:47:37.19 all been working and rallying the churches- 00:47:37.29\00:47:39.89 Leslie and Tom have been going from church 00:47:39.99\00:47:43.09 to church, rallying the pastors and everything- 00:47:43.19\00:47:45.43 and they responded with 16 churches. This 00:47:45.49\00:47:49.66 is just one city's worth of churches. We had 00:47:49.73\00:47:55.77 200 people come on Friday night, we had 00:47:55.87\00:47:59.07 500 people come for the Sabbath presentations 00:47:59.14\00:48:01.41 (which was all-day long). - I think there's 00:48:01.48\00:48:03.04 a picture for that, right? - We have a 00:48:03.08\00:48:04.41 picture up there somewhere. Then, on Sunday, he 00:48:04.51\00:48:09.68 comes back and does a hands-on. And you know 00:48:09.78\00:48:12.12 on Sunday, the numbers drop off. He thought 00:48:12.19\00:48:14.52 there was just going to be 25. We had 140. 00:48:14.59\00:48:19.06 There, he did some cooking demos and he had 00:48:19.09\00:48:21.83 his chef come; they were running out and getting 00:48:21.93\00:48:24.53 paper plates, you know, last minute, just because 00:48:24.60\00:48:28.27 the number that responded was so much more than 00:48:28.37\00:48:33.81 our expectations. And also, this is when they 00:48:33.88\00:48:37.08 sign up for the training and say, "We want to 00:48:37.15\00:48:38.85 continue. We want to be able to do this 00:48:38.88\00:48:40.52 together." So, I just want to give this number 00:48:40.62\00:48:43.69 here: we now have 75 to 80 people signed 00:48:43.79\00:48:49.59 up and going through the online training right 00:48:49.66\00:48:52.16 now. This is including families, so sometimes, 00:48:52.26\00:48:54.50 you sign up, but the whole family is watching 00:48:54.56\00:48:57.93 it together and going through the training. 00:48:58.00\00:48:59.47 We're excited about that. - Yes! That's amazing! 00:48:59.53\00:49:02.77 - I should mention that. They're not 00:49:02.80\00:49:04.14 just doing an online training to get information. 00:49:04.24\00:49:06.54 We've got tons of information as Adventists. 00:49:06.57\00:49:09.08 This is designed for, once they finish, 00:49:09.14\00:49:11.98 they're going to do something that YOU'RE 00:49:12.05\00:49:13.55 familiar with. They're going to actually start 00:49:13.65\00:49:15.62 to do these little satellite health 00:49:15.68\00:49:18.25 seminars throughout the evangelism zone 00:49:18.32\00:49:20.99 of From Sickness to Health. - I love it! 00:49:21.06\00:49:24.56 - So, for five days, we utilize and we 00:49:24.63\00:49:28.26 integrate little pieces from the show, and, 00:49:28.33\00:49:31.73 with a speaker- now, I've been doing them 00:49:31.80\00:49:34.47 around the country. What we do is, the 00:49:34.54\00:49:36.84 whole motto is, "Never let people go." You keep 00:49:37.01\00:49:40.21 mingling with them all the way to an evangelistic 00:49:40.28\00:49:42.78 series. You never stop. Don't let them go. 00:49:42.88\00:49:46.72 Not as Leslie says. "See you next year." 00:49:47.98\00:49:50.09 No! We take them from one thing to the next. 00:49:50.12\00:49:52.19 They stay within the cycle. - So the retention 00:49:52.25\00:49:54.49 level has got to be through the roof, 00:49:54.56\00:49:56.56 because you're not letting them go! - You 00:49:56.66\00:49:58.66 don't let them go. Can I tell you this? - Yes. 00:49:58.73\00:50:00.10 - I just did an evangelistic series in Tacoma, Washington 00:50:00.13\00:50:02.50 at the Tacoma Central Church. In September, 00:50:02.60\00:50:06.23 I did a From Sickness to Health - five days. 00:50:06.30\00:50:08.50 They spent about $10,000 on ads: media, Facebook, 00:50:08.54\00:50:13.58 radio... No one came to the evangelistic 00:50:13.74\00:50:17.65 series from that effort. They sent out fliers. 00:50:17.75\00:50:20.88 The people who came to the meetings came 00:50:20.92\00:50:23.85 from the health talks, From Sickness to Health. 00:50:23.95\00:50:26.72 12 baptisms. Hallelujah. Now, speaking of success, 00:50:26.82\00:50:31.56 you got to tell- this is an amazing story. 00:50:31.66\00:50:33.96 Tell her the story. We got like, one minute. 00:50:34.03\00:50:36.33 Tell the story about the mayor. - The mayor. 00:50:36.40\00:50:38.73 Well, the mayor of... - He came to the rally. 00:50:38.80\00:50:41.10 - ...of South Windsor, we invited him to the 00:50:41.17\00:50:42.50 rally. He's a medical doctor by profession, 00:50:42.54\00:50:44.24 graduate of the Yale Medical School. He is 00:50:44.34\00:50:48.18 very respectful of the work that we do as 00:50:48.24\00:50:51.08 Adventists. He's Muslim by faith, profession, 00:50:51.15\00:50:53.68 but he grew up and has been influenced by 00:50:53.75\00:50:56.72 Adventists through his medical degree. He 00:50:56.82\00:51:00.89 came to the rally, so he knows our health 00:51:00.96\00:51:03.96 message. He understands the role that it can 00:51:04.06\00:51:05.83 play, and this is what he said at this rally 00:51:05.96\00:51:07.40 (where there were 500 Seventh-Day Adventists). 00:51:07.50\00:51:09.26 - Now, Tom invited him to the rally to 00:51:09.33\00:51:11.40 speak specifically to the Adventists. - Honest thing. 00:51:11.47\00:51:13.94 And this is, in a nutshell- he spoke for 00:51:14.20\00:51:16.87 10 minutes, but here's what it boils down to: 00:51:16.91\00:51:18.54 he said, "You Adventists are like a sports car. 00:51:18.64\00:51:20.24 You're like a fine-tuned machine like a Porsche 00:51:20.98\00:51:22.74 that I saw sitting in the parking lot." He 00:51:22.81\00:51:24.98 says the only problem is this. He says, "You're 00:51:25.08\00:51:27.48 only going 5 miles an hour." - Ooh. - And 00:51:27.58\00:51:29.62 as a result of that, you're blocking traffic. 00:51:29.68\00:51:31.12 - Ooh! - He said, "If you were to take this 00:51:31.22\00:51:33.52 machinery out on the road the way it was 00:51:33.56\00:51:35.39 designed to run, I guarantee you the 00:51:35.46\00:51:37.76 rest of us would be following you." - Wow, 00:51:37.83\00:51:41.20 is that powerful? - I was sitting like... 00:51:41.26\00:51:44.37 - Oh, wow. That is so powerful. So, you 00:51:44.47\00:51:47.17 are actually reaching out to the community and 00:51:47.27\00:51:51.24 getting them to come in and hear; it's not 00:51:51.34\00:51:54.04 just for Adventists. We don't want viewers 00:51:54.11\00:51:56.61 to think that this is just for Adventists. 00:51:56.68\00:51:59.55 - Well, it's to get the Adventists out 00:51:59.61\00:52:01.02 of the benches and into the community. 00:52:01.05\00:52:02.85 - Yes. Yes. - It's to train the Adventists, 00:52:02.95\00:52:04.72 really. - And that is what we have to 00:52:04.82\00:52:08.49 do - get people up.
