I want to spend my life 00:00:01.36\00:00:07.24 Mending broken people 00:00:07.30\00:00:12.27 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.37\00:00:17.88 Removing pain 00:00:18.41\00:00:23.02 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.59\00:00:29.02 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.82\00:00:33.70 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.40\00:00:39.40 Mending broken people 00:00:40.20\00:00:44.67 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.61\00:00:50.85 Mending broken people 00:00:51.21\00:00:55.25 - Hello and welcome to another 3ABN Today 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.20 program. Thank you for joining us as you do 00:01:12.27\00:01:14.50 each and every day. Thank you for your 00:01:14.60\00:01:16.77 love and your prayers and financial support 00:01:16.81\00:01:18.94 of 3ABN as we endeavor to take this great gospel 00:01:19.01\00:01:21.84 of the kingdom into all the world. And 00:01:21.91\00:01:24.61 my lovely co-host here, my wife Yvonne. 00:01:24.68\00:01:26.61 Yvonne, we're going to have a great program 00:01:27.38\00:01:28.75 today. - We are. We are. - One thing we've 00:01:28.85\00:01:30.92 already prayed about, right? - That's right. 00:01:31.02\00:01:33.69 So we know the Holy Spirit is going to be 00:01:33.76\00:01:35.49 with us and just work it. - And we have some 00:01:35.52\00:01:39.53 leaders of a great organization-I think 00:01:39.59\00:01:41.96 one of the greatest organizations on Earth, 00:01:42.06\00:01:44.47 actually. - I do, too. - Because it's all about, 00:01:44.57\00:01:46.77 "Go ye"; it's about sharing Jesus in the 00:01:46.84\00:01:49.34 marketplace. So, why don't we introduce our 00:01:49.44\00:01:51.91 folks this time? - Good, good! - You want to? 00:01:51.97\00:01:53.88 Elder Steve Dickman, how are you doing? 00:01:53.94\00:01:55.48 - Doing fine today. - Good. You're the 00:01:55.51\00:01:56.88 president of ASI. We're so glad that you're here, 00:01:56.95\00:02:00.22 but you're also president of another organization. 00:02:00.25\00:02:03.45 Is that Harbor Hills? - My day job- I tell 00:02:03.52\00:02:06.69 people my day job is that I run a school in 00:02:06.76\00:02:09.99 Tennessee, so we have a little self-supporting 00:02:10.06\00:02:12.29 school there in Tennessee and have about 70 or 00:02:12.39\00:02:15.46 80 students from all over the world that 00:02:15.53\00:02:18.20 come there and follow the model of education that 00:02:18.27\00:02:21.57 God gave us for helping to educate the whole 00:02:21.67\00:02:24.77 person. - Wonderful. Wonderful. And we'll 00:02:24.87\00:02:27.78 talk a little bit later how you became president- 00:02:27.84\00:02:29.84 ASI's an international organization, and you're 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.25 North American, I guess, or here. So, how that happened, 00:02:32.31\00:02:36.28 because that's a big step and it's a huge 00:02:36.38\00:02:39.52 organization to lead. And so, they don't 00:02:39.62\00:02:42.46 just pick people lightly from that. There's people 00:02:42.52\00:02:44.83 that they've watched and seen and know and 00:02:44.93\00:02:46.80 respect, so it's a great honor. I would 00:02:46.86\00:02:50.73 assume, that they've chosen you to lead 00:02:50.77\00:02:53.74 this organization though we're here in 00:02:53.80\00:02:56.30 North America, that does work in outreach around 00:02:56.37\00:02:58.91 the world. That's what I love about it. Then we 00:02:58.97\00:03:01.71 have Leasa Hodges. Leasa, thank you for being 00:03:01.78\00:03:04.65 here today. - Thank you! - You're the sister of 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.58 somebody that folk know on 3ABN. Should 00:03:07.65\00:03:11.92 we mention it or not? Hide it, maybe. Maybe 00:03:11.95\00:03:15.46 we should tell it, anyway. - Well, now 00:03:15.49\00:03:17.36 that you opened that can, Brian Hamilton 00:03:17.43\00:03:19.93 is my brother! He works in your... - Yeah, 00:03:20.00\00:03:25.20 financial department. And, of course, you're 00:03:25.27\00:03:29.07 greatly closely related to Garwin McNeilus. 00:03:29.10\00:03:33.78 - Yeah. He's my brother. - Yeah. She couldn't 00:03:33.81\00:03:37.71 hardly say it, but we helped her say it. 00:03:37.75\00:03:39.55 [laughter] - Well, one time, we were at ASI 00:03:39.61\00:03:41.58 convention, and you know the exhibit hall is huge. 00:03:41.68\00:03:44.52 So, he was with a bunch of people. I 00:03:44.59\00:03:47.56 came by, and he said, "Leasa, come here," and 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.66 he introduced me as his sister. Everybody 00:03:49.72\00:03:52.79 said, "Oh, yes, we're brothers and sisters 00:03:52.86\00:03:54.86 in Christ!" [laughter] And Garwin said, "No, 00:03:54.96\00:03:57.63 she really is my sister!" They looked at me 00:03:57.70\00:04:00.44 and they looked at him, and somebody said, 00:04:00.57\00:04:03.14 "Well, why did your parents adopt so late?" 00:04:03.20\00:04:06.74 I said, "'Cause they wanted to do it right 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.41 the second time around." [laughter] - Oh, that's 00:04:08.44\00:04:12.25 good. - But we love him. - Absolutely. 00:04:12.31\00:04:14.38 Garwin and Mary Lee... What a great team, 00:04:14.48\00:04:17.12 husband and wife,? and the work that 00:04:17.22\00:04:19.15 they do around the world, one-day churches, 00:04:19.22\00:04:21.06 and all of that really is just amazing, so... 00:04:21.12\00:04:24.09 - Yeah, through ASI, and... - That's right. 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.39 Marantha and so many ministries... 3ABN. 00:04:26.46\00:04:28.46 They've been a great support to us through 00:04:28.53\00:04:30.90 the years, also. And then we have brother... 00:04:30.97\00:04:34.17 Baptiste? Is that the way you say it, now? 00:04:34.27\00:04:36.77 I want to make sure. And what's your position 00:04:36.84\00:04:39.64 with ASI? - I'm the new ASI secretary treasurer 00:04:39.71\00:04:43.21 and departmental director for ASI for the North 00:04:43.31\00:04:46.51 American Division. It's a joy to be part of 00:04:46.55\00:04:48.92 such a dynamic team here with Steve and 00:04:49.02\00:04:52.52 Leasa and the whole ASI team. - Well, we're 00:04:52.55\00:04:55.12 glad you're here, brother Phillip. So, 00:04:55.19\00:04:56.93 it's our privilege to introduce these folk. 00:04:56.99\00:04:59.13 But right now, Yvonne, we're going to have some 00:04:59.23\00:05:00.66 special music. - We are! - And I look forward to 00:05:00.73\00:05:03.63 hearing this gentleman play the piano, this 00:05:03.73\00:05:06.50 brother. Incredible. Tell us who it is. 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.87 - Adrian Westney, Jr. - All right. 00:05:08.94\00:05:10.64 - Amen. Incredible job, and beautiful song. 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.27 "I'd Rather Have Jesus." - And so soothing. What 00:09:05.37\00:09:08.08 a soothing arrangement of the song. - Absolutely. 00:09:08.21\00:09:10.38 Well, today, if you're just joining us, we have 00:09:10.45\00:09:12.88 members of ASI, some of the leadership team here, 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.12 and Steve, Leasa, and Philip, we're so thankful 00:09:16.18\00:09:18.82 that y'all are here today. We want to 00:09:18.89\00:09:21.62 talk about, for our viewers, let's start 00:09:21.66\00:09:23.49 out, tell us a little bit about ASI, what 00:09:23.56\00:09:26.43 it stands for, and what the organization is all 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.63 about. Maybe give a little history. - So, 00:09:28.70\00:09:31.33 Danny, ASI started in 1947. What was happening 00:09:31.40\00:09:38.57 then was a very unique project was happening. 00:09:38.67\00:09:42.21 Madison College was in operation. Madison was 00:09:42.28\00:09:46.28 started in 1904 under the direction of Ellen 00:09:46.35\00:09:48.75 White and Percy Magan and E.A. Sutherland. 00:09:48.78\00:09:53.02 They went there to establish a work for 00:09:53.09\00:09:55.49 training laypeople to go out and do mission 00:09:55.59\00:09:58.43 work. Their focus, initially, was to do 00:09:58.49\00:10:01.13 this across the southern part of the United States. 00:10:01.20\00:10:03.47 Well, that began to happen rather quickly. 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.23 They were sending out people that began to 00:10:06.30\00:10:08.47 start schools and churches and businesses where 00:10:08.54\00:10:12.97 they would grow churches all across the southern 00:10:13.04\00:10:15.91 part of the United States. But it blossomed 00:10:16.01\00:10:17.85 from there, and pretty soon, they were sending 00:10:17.91\00:10:19.55 out missionaries all around the world. They 00:10:19.61\00:10:21.48 garner worldwide attention, Reader's 00:10:21.55\00:10:23.75 Digest magazine, and the New York Times 00:10:23.82\00:10:26.45 came there and wrote articles about what 00:10:26.55\00:10:28.62 they were doing, because it was a very unique 00:10:28.69\00:10:30.79 model of education where people were 00:10:30.86\00:10:33.33 taught to be self-sustaining. - Mhm. - Yeah. Eleanor 00:10:33.40\00:10:38.97 Rosevelt came there and visited the camps, so 00:10:39.03\00:10:42.20 they got a lot of worldwide attention 00:10:42.30\00:10:43.91 to what they were doing. - Sure. - It's a very 00:10:44.01\00:10:46.01 powerful school that was just producing a 00:10:46.07\00:10:48.28 lot of students that went from there and 00:10:48.34\00:10:51.15 really knew how to do things and start things 00:10:51.21\00:10:53.65 and were very productive in missions. The Seventh-Day 00:10:53.72\00:10:58.95 Adventist Church didn't own the institution. 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.26 It was a called a supporting ministry or 00:11:02.32\00:11:03.99 a self-supporting ministry. - Mhm. - So, it was a 00:11:04.06\00:11:06.49 model of education that was not supported by 00:11:06.56\00:11:10.27 donations from the church, but found a 00:11:10.37\00:11:13.34 way to be self-sustaining. They had many industries 00:11:13.40\00:11:16.10 there on campus. They had a food factory and 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.94 lots of other things going on. As a result 00:11:18.01\00:11:20.51 of that, the church began to see- the 00:11:20.68\00:11:23.45 Seventh-Day Adventist Church began to see 00:11:23.55\00:11:24.95 we need a way to communicate with these people who 00:11:25.01\00:11:28.28 are out establishing the work of God around 00:11:28.38\00:11:31.35 the world, actually. And so, from that, the 00:11:31.42\00:11:35.59 idea to establish an organization that would 00:11:35.69\00:11:39.09 be the connecting link between laypeople doing 00:11:39.19\00:11:43.00 mission and church doing mission. It's all the 00:11:43.06\00:11:47.37 same mission; it's just the laypeople 00:11:47.47\00:11:50.51 doing mission without being paid by the 00:11:50.57\00:11:52.87 church as opposed to those who are officially 00:11:52.94\00:11:55.84 commissioned by the church and paid by the 00:11:55.91\00:11:57.85 church. - Yeah. - So, that's kind of the 00:11:57.91\00:12:00.22 essence of the idea. Initially, ASI was just 00:12:00.32\00:12:03.62 a group of supporting ministries. It was 00:12:03.69\00:12:06.52 schools and ministries that were maybe... 00:12:07.36\00:12:09.92 - Health. - Health or related to care for 00:12:09.99\00:12:13.26 children or some specialty aspect of just reaching 00:12:13.33\00:12:18.33 in the community and helping them. So, these 00:12:18.43\00:12:20.57 ministries would get together. And actually 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.47 as early as 1908, they began to meet together 00:12:23.54\00:12:25.67 on the campus of Madison. So, there was already 00:12:25.77\00:12:27.94 a nucleus of people meeting. But in 1947, 00:12:28.04\00:12:31.11 it became official. A secretary treasurer was 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.15 appointed to serve at the church level, which 00:12:34.25\00:12:37.75 is the position that Philip now holds. And 00:12:37.82\00:12:40.46 elder E.A. Sutherland was elected, who was 00:12:40.52\00:12:43.53 then the president of Madison, to serve as 00:12:43.63\00:12:45.36 the first president for ASI. And so, that's 00:12:45.43\00:12:48.90 kind of the history as to where it came from. 00:12:48.96\00:12:50.60 - And it started out as Adventist-laymen's 00:12:50.70\00:12:53.17 & Services Industry, and to shorten it, I 00:12:53.30\00:12:55.60 think ASI - Adventist Services & Industry. I'm 00:12:55.67\00:12:58.91 not sure all of that background... - Layman's 00:12:58.97\00:13:01.18 Services... - Laymen's Services Industries. 00:13:01.24\00:13:03.14 So, it kind of changed over the years, but 00:13:03.24\00:13:07.52 ASI, now, is known around the world, and 00:13:07.58\00:13:10.35 of course, it grew from here, as you 00:13:10.42\00:13:12.25 mentioned, not only through the rest of 00:13:12.32\00:13:13.99 America and North America, but now there's 00:13:14.06\00:13:16.12 literally- I guess there's memberships 00:13:16.19\00:13:18.09 around the world, right? - There's 00:13:18.19\00:13:20.03 chapters. - So, there are chapters now, and 00:13:20.10\00:13:21.83 elder Wilson has encouraged that each division should 00:13:21.90\00:13:25.73 start its own chapter of ASI. And so we have 00:13:25.80\00:13:29.74 acted kind of as their mentors, are encouraging 00:13:29.84\00:13:32.64 them in this way, and go there and usually 00:13:32.71\00:13:35.64 help them organize their chapter, and get it 00:13:35.71\00:13:38.05 going. But yes, we have chapters now in many 00:13:38.11\00:13:40.02 of the divisions around the world, and God is 00:13:40.08\00:13:42.18 blessing as the doors have been opened now, 00:13:42.25\00:13:46.45 so there's not just the ministries, but 00:13:46.52\00:13:48.79 it's the business and professional people, as 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.56 well. To think of what could be done for God's 00:13:50.63\00:13:56.16 work if we really could encourage all the 00:13:56.23\00:13:59.87 laypeople to get involved. - Absolutely. That's 00:13:59.93\00:14:02.44 part of the go ye into all the world. Didn't 00:14:02.50\00:14:04.81 just say, "Go to the pastors, go to teachers"; 00:14:04.91\00:14:08.01 it says, "Go ye," so I always tell everyone 00:14:08.08\00:14:10.31 in our church services how man- I ask them 00:14:10.38\00:14:12.31 how many ye's are here Every hand should go 00:14:12.41\00:14:14.55 up. We're all ye's. At least... Go ahead. - So, 00:14:14.62\00:14:18.45 are there multiple emphases here? Are we 00:14:18.49\00:14:21.32 looking at taking God into the marketplace, 00:14:21.36\00:14:24.66 how to do that? Like, are there multiple emphases 00:14:24.76\00:14:29.20 within ASI? - The tagline of ASI is sharing Christ 00:14:29.30\00:14:34.14 in the marketplace. What we hope to do is 00:14:34.20\00:14:37.34 actually encourage the laypeople to do that. 00:14:38.47\00:14:40.84 ASI is an organization; has a lot of things going 00:14:40.91\00:14:43.98 on, but we want to empower the lay business 00:14:44.05\00:14:47.92 and professional person to actually be actively 00:14:47.98\00:14:50.99 sharing Christ in their marketplace in whatever 00:14:51.05\00:14:54.46 way God directs them to do that. We'll 00:14:54.56\00:14:57.06 talk later about some of the ways that that comes 00:14:57.16\00:15:00.13 out. But to really- all of these things are 00:15:00.20\00:15:05.67 done in support of the work of the church; 00:15:05.73\00:15:09.00 not aside from the work of the church, but really 00:15:09.07\00:15:12.21 in support of the work of God's church. - Leasa, 00:15:12.27\00:15:15.98 you're the vice president of membership for the North 00:15:16.08\00:15:19.31 American Division. I'd like to find out a little 00:15:19.38\00:15:21.68 of your background. How did you first hear of 00:15:21.75\00:15:23.45 ASI and how long have you been involved? 00:15:23.52\00:15:26.25 - Well, the first time I heard of ASI, it was 00:15:26.86\00:15:28.79 when Denzel and Donna started going. It just 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.93 totally changed their life, and for years, 00:15:31.99\00:15:34.60 they were trying to get us to go. I kind 00:15:34.66\00:15:38.97 of had a misconception of what ASI was, 'cause 00:15:39.03\00:15:42.80 by that time, there was a lot of business 00:15:42.90\00:15:44.34 people involved and stuff, and I just thought 00:15:44.44\00:15:47.48 it was just a bunch of Adventist business 00:15:47.54\00:15:48.88 people getting together. I didn't know the history. 00:15:48.91\00:15:51.21 But one time, when we started the Youth for Jesus 00:15:52.51\00:15:55.15 program, Donna went there to take her 00:15:55.25\00:15:57.72 children and volunteer to cook. So, she was 00:15:57.82\00:16:01.26 supposed to cook for 10 kids; instead, she 00:16:01.36\00:16:04.39 was cooking for like, 40-50 people. So, she 00:16:04.43\00:16:07.40 called and she said, "I need help!" and I 00:16:07.43\00:16:10.63 love to cook. She said, "Come down here if 00:16:10.70\00:16:13.13 you get bored! Joe can go to Disney World." 00:16:13.20\00:16:15.40 [laughter] 'Cause I had a son who was 13 at the 00:16:15.47\00:16:18.11 time, so I said, "Okay." So, I went and I was 00:16:18.21\00:16:22.54 just blown away by what was going on-not with 00:16:22.61\00:16:26.68 just the Youth for Jesus program, but then 00:16:26.75\00:16:28.52 I went to the convention. I didn't know there was 00:16:28.58\00:16:32.42 so much going on in the church that laypeople 00:16:32.49\00:16:36.36 were doing. So, I think I've only missed 00:16:36.42\00:16:41.93 one since the year 1999. And actually, I 00:16:42.00\00:16:47.40 was rebaptized. I had left the church for like, 00:16:47.44\00:16:52.01 20 some years, and I was converted at the 00:16:52.11\00:16:56.28 ASI. - Wow. Praise the Lord. - Youth for Jesus 00:16:56.44\00:16:58.35 and at the convention, I was rebaptized, so 00:16:58.41\00:17:00.55 ASI is really special to me. - That, you know, 00:17:01.22\00:17:04.95 for me, Leasa, as well, like when I go to ASI 00:17:05.05\00:17:08.89 and I see all of the ministries that are 00:17:08.92\00:17:11.79 doing things and making a difference, it's so 00:17:11.86\00:17:15.60 impressive. You go to the exhibits, and it's 00:17:15.66\00:17:18.63 just amazing to me. All the things that we at 00:17:18.73\00:17:22.30 3ABN- we have an exhibit there, as well-all of the 00:17:22.37\00:17:25.07 things that are going on around the world, it's 00:17:25.21\00:17:27.98 not just here in America; it's around the world. 00:17:28.04\00:17:30.55 - Well, you get so many ideas about what you can do 00:17:30.65\00:17:32.85 in your own business or your own ministry or 00:17:32.91\00:17:37.65 in the home just as a private person or in 00:17:37.79\00:17:42.59 your church, you learn a lot. - Yeah. - It 00:17:42.69\00:17:47.40 helps you catch a vision. Sometimes, we're 00:17:47.50\00:17:50.90 so involved in our own ministry. I'm sure there 00:17:50.97\00:17:54.10 at your school, you're so involved in what 00:17:54.24\00:17:56.34 you're doing, you kind of- it's good to look 00:17:56.40\00:17:59.74 around and say, "Wow. Lord," you know- sometimes, 00:17:59.77\00:18:02.61 you think, "Well, this is all on me," or whatever. 00:18:02.68\00:18:04.58 No, it's not. The Lord has 7,000 others going 00:18:04.65\00:18:07.98 who have bended their knees to Baal; but you 00:18:08.05\00:18:10.02 go to these ASI and you meet all these people 00:18:10.05\00:18:12.69 and these ministries, and you see- it encourages 00:18:12.75\00:18:15.82 you. You say, "You know what? God has a people, 00:18:15.92\00:18:18.16 and this is just part of them," 'cause, of 00:18:18.26\00:18:20.56 course, people like, even that don't attend 00:18:20.63\00:18:22.96 ASI, but those who come and you see the 00:18:23.03\00:18:25.40 ministries reaching millions of people, 00:18:25.50\00:18:27.97 and for those that think projects like 00:18:28.04\00:18:30.51 the one-day churches that are building these 00:18:30.54\00:18:32.24 churches in one day that literally make 00:18:32.34\00:18:35.88 home churches for people that may never 00:18:35.94\00:18:39.51 had one, and in many of the third world countries. 00:18:39.58\00:18:42.02 And to do that and ASI members getting together 00:18:42.08\00:18:46.22 and raising the money for this, sending the 00:18:46.32\00:18:49.12 churches ASI volunteers, traveling around, you 00:18:49.19\00:18:52.63 know, literally their time, their money, 00:18:52.73\00:18:54.60 going, paying their own way to work to 00:18:54.66\00:18:58.07 somewhere-and it's not necessarily vacation, 00:18:58.13\00:19:00.77 'cause you can end up in all kinds of places 00:19:00.84\00:19:02.70 that may not be Disney World, as you mentioned. 00:19:02.77\00:19:05.31 [laughter] So, to go there and be a part 00:19:05.37\00:19:08.24 of that, that gives you a vision. So, what I 00:19:08.31\00:19:11.71 think ASI does for many of us, it's our own 00:19:11.81\00:19:16.48 salvation. I say that because of this: when 00:19:16.55\00:19:20.19 we help others, it helps us to get our 00:19:20.29\00:19:23.43 mind off of ourselves. In other words, everything 00:19:23.49\00:19:27.43 around us, we're so busy, and what we 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.46 do is me, myself, and I. But when we begin 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.33 to serve others, that's why Jesus says, "Go 00:19:32.43\00:19:34.94 ye into all the world," I think, Steve, is so 00:19:35.04\00:19:37.64 that we can serve others and learn to love others 00:19:37.71\00:19:41.21 and not just- and we realize this world's not 00:19:41.28\00:19:43.75 about us; it's about those who can't help 00:19:43.81\00:19:47.05 themselves, taking the gospel into all the 00:19:47.12\00:19:49.12 world. So, ASI, the motto of sharing Jesus 00:19:49.18\00:19:52.75 in the marketplace could be anywhere in 00:19:52.82\00:19:55.49 the world. Philip, now, give us a little bit of 00:19:55.56\00:19:57.96 your background of ASI. - Well, you know, we 00:19:58.03\00:20:00.90 started- I was serving as a missionary in Kenya. 00:20:00.96\00:20:04.57 My wife and I were GC missionaries in the East 00:20:04.63\00:20:07.40 Central Africa Division, and I was the special 00:20:07.47\00:20:09.90 assistant to the president for the division. Each 00:20:09.97\00:20:13.21 division president was invited to ASI several 00:20:13.27\00:20:16.34 years ago by Ted Wilson. My division president,? 00:20:16.41\00:20:22.48 brought me along, and I was assigned to 00:20:22.52\00:20:24.75 be the ASI secretary treasurer for the East 00:20:24.85\00:20:28.09 Africa Division. And so because of- we actually 00:20:28.16\00:20:31.56 had Steve and Kyle. They came over and we 00:20:31.63\00:20:34.30 helped to launch ASI in Africa, in that part 00:20:34.40\00:20:37.17 of Africa. And so because of my work there, when 00:20:37.23\00:20:40.44 we returned from the mission field, it was just 00:20:40.50\00:20:42.90 a privilege to be able to come and serve here 00:20:42.94\00:20:45.47 in the North American Division with ASI. 00:20:45.54\00:20:48.04 Something that really excites me about ASI 00:20:48.11\00:20:51.01 right now is not only are we empowering our 00:20:51.08\00:20:53.68 lay businesspeople, our lay professional 00:20:53.75\00:20:55.95 people, but we have something called Young 00:20:55.98\00:20:58.09 Professionals. We're actually mentoring and 00:20:58.15\00:21:01.56 equipping our young professionals. At our 00:21:01.62\00:21:03.53 last ASI convention, we had over 200 young 00:21:03.59\00:21:06.76 professionals. We had a one-day focus, and 00:21:06.83\00:21:09.60 every year, if you come to ASI, you'll 00:21:09.66\00:21:12.07 find a special track for young professionals 00:21:12.13\00:21:14.77 where they can be empowered and they 00:21:14.84\00:21:16.71 can be equipped to serve and mentored 00:21:16.74\00:21:19.17 by other ASI professionals. So, ASI is not just 00:21:19.24\00:21:22.84 for older people; it's for everybody. You 00:21:22.91\00:21:25.58 can get involved, and you can make a difference 00:21:25.65\00:21:27.78 and engage in sharing Christ in the marketplace. 00:21:27.82\00:21:29.58 - Membership-wise, we go from young professionals 00:21:30.35\00:21:32.82 all the way to retired professionals. - Yes. 00:21:32.89\00:21:35.92 - So, you know if you're retired and you're looking 00:21:35.96\00:21:38.36 for something to do, come to ASI, join ASI, 00:21:38.46\00:21:42.40 and you can find all kinds of things that, 00:21:42.46\00:21:44.93 as a retired professional, you can do. - You know, 00:21:45.00\00:21:48.94 one of the things that I've heard coming out 00:21:49.04\00:21:52.17 kind of as a theme here is that God uses 00:21:52.27\00:21:55.84 a great diversity. He's not a God that just- 00:21:55.91\00:21:59.48 "There's one way." And when you go to ASI, 00:21:59.55\00:22:02.72 one of the things that's impressed me is God is 00:22:02.78\00:22:04.59 calling individuals to do things that I would 00:22:04.65\00:22:07.26 never believe He would call them to do. I have 00:22:07.32\00:22:10.16 a friend who owns a construction business. 00:22:10.26\00:22:13.56 I was walking the exhibit hall isles one 00:22:13.60\00:22:18.33 day, and he said, "God has impressed me to 00:22:18.40\00:22:22.27 start a radio station in the jungles of 00:22:22.34\00:22:25.87 Nicaragua." And I said, like, "Really?" I mean, 00:22:25.97\00:22:30.41 this guy doesn't know anything about radio; 00:22:30.51\00:22:33.15 he's a construction guy. We have a radio 00:22:33.21\00:22:35.85 station on our campus, so I know enough to be 00:22:35.92\00:22:37.72 dangerous, and I made the statement, "Well, 00:22:37.79\00:22:40.66 let me know and I'll help you." From that, 00:22:40.72\00:22:44.89 there is a radio station today, ministering to 00:22:44.99\00:22:48.70 the people of Nicaragua in a very indigenous 00:22:48.80\00:22:51.87 language group there on the northern border 00:22:51.93\00:22:55.44 of Nicaragua with Honduras. That would 00:22:55.57\00:22:58.04 never have been there if an individual wasn't 00:22:58.14\00:23:00.84 listening to the promptings of the Holy 00:23:00.94\00:23:03.61 Spirit. What he could do even though he didn't 00:23:03.68\00:23:07.88 know he could do it, God was going to use 00:23:07.98\00:23:10.69 him to do something amazing there. - I'd 00:23:10.75\00:23:13.36 like to talk about some of the special 00:23:13.42\00:23:16.12 projects that ASI does that you all are familiar 00:23:16.22\00:23:19.93 with. To me, it's so important. I don't know 00:23:20.00\00:23:24.57 who comes up, and I'm sure it's administration, 00:23:24.60\00:23:27.00 but the vision of getting all these 00:23:27.04\00:23:29.47 people together and starting special projects, 00:23:29.54\00:23:33.04 and then maybe some testimonies of some 00:23:33.11\00:23:35.44 lives that have been changed because of 00:23:35.51\00:23:37.58 ASI. What are some of the special projects that 00:23:37.65\00:23:41.68 you know are close to you? - Well, one of our 00:23:41.78\00:23:44.92 special projects, which I'm really excited about, 00:23:44.99\00:23:47.59 is our ASI New Beginnings evangelistic series. 00:23:47.66\00:23:51.06 It's like evangelism in a box, 26 sermons 00:23:51.13\00:23:54.60 designed for a layperson, for, maybe, someone 00:23:54.63\00:23:57.53 that's not a pastor and not trained, and there's 00:23:57.60\00:24:00.00 a beautiful script, beautiful PowerPoint 00:24:00.04\00:24:02.50 presentations... This is available in literally 00:24:02.57\00:24:05.97 dozens of languages. - 34 languages. - Wow. - 34 00:24:07.04\00:24:10.78 languages around the world. You can download 00:24:10.85\00:24:12.91 it. There was a guy at our ASI convention 00:24:12.95\00:24:15.85 that I met, and he is a CEO of a big company. 00:24:15.95\00:24:21.02 He said, "I want to reach other CEOs with the good 00:24:21.09\00:24:23.66 news of the Adventist message." So he said, 00:24:23.73\00:24:26.36 "What if, instead of doing a traditional 00:24:26.46\00:24:28.23 evangelistic series, I use the ASI New 00:24:28.33\00:24:31.17 Beginnings, 26 sermons, but I did it in a 00:24:31.27\00:24:34.00 weekend?" So over a weekend, he invited 00:24:34.07\00:24:36.60 a whole bunch of CEOs to a nice retreat center 00:24:36.67\00:24:40.01 or a hotel, and he preached the entire 00:24:40.08\00:24:43.24 series of 26 sermons from Friday to Sunday, 00:24:43.31\00:24:46.72 and he's baptizing and winning other CEOs to 00:24:46.78\00:24:51.05 the Adventist Church and to the message of Jesus 00:24:51.12\00:24:53.22 that way. And so, it just shows the power 00:24:53.32\00:24:55.72 of ASI and the power of that project, the 00:24:55.79\00:24:59.46 New Beginnings evangelistic series which has gone 00:24:59.53\00:25:01.56 around the world. - Wow. - So in thinking about 00:25:01.63\00:25:05.23 just that project, hundreds of thousands 00:25:05.30\00:25:08.30 of laypeople have been trained around the world, 00:25:08.37\00:25:10.84 using that New Beginnings to... - Hundreds of 00:25:10.91\00:25:13.01 thousands... That's amazing. - Hundreds 00:25:13.07\00:25:14.54 of thousands. Leasa and her good friend 00:25:14.58\00:25:16.61 Barb Taylor have done I don't know how many 00:25:17.45\00:25:20.28 trainings-maybe you could just estimate-but 00:25:20.35\00:25:22.25 thousands of trainings for laypeople around 00:25:22.32\00:25:25.52 the world, empowering them- well... - Maybe 00:25:25.59\00:25:28.96 hundreds. - Hundreds of thousands of laypeople. 00:25:29.02\00:25:31.73 - Yes, yes. - Empowering them with the simple 00:25:31.79\00:25:34.43 tools that they can personally use to share 00:25:34.53\00:25:37.97 Christ and to see the light that comes on in 00:25:38.03\00:25:41.70 their eyes when they say, "I can do this." 00:25:41.77\00:25:44.07 "I'm empowered to do this." And to know- 00:25:44.14\00:25:47.81 I'm sure there've been hundreds and hundreds 00:25:48.51\00:25:51.21 of thousands of baptisms as a result of this 00:25:51.35\00:25:53.58 simple tool. Well, laypeople going out 00:25:53.65\00:25:55.68 and doing what they can do for God... I think 00:25:55.75\00:25:59.55 of one of the stories, and I think it's one 00:25:59.65\00:26:01.39 of the dense? hotels of- it was an Asian country. 00:26:01.46\00:26:04.43 They had done the training, and they 00:26:04.49\00:26:06.33 went back later. The lady was doing like, 00:26:06.39\00:26:09.23 studying with 30 or 40 people by herself 00:26:09.30\00:26:12.23 in Cambodia-by herself. This was like her work 00:26:12.30\00:26:15.77 now. She had a mission in life, and she was 00:26:15.80\00:26:18.14 empowered to do this. She was just on fire 00:26:18.21\00:26:20.64 to go out and share the gospel through- 00:26:20.71\00:26:23.11 this means with everybody she could come in contact 00:26:23.18\00:26:24.98 with. - Well, ASI Youth for Jesus, of course, 00:26:25.05\00:26:27.65 is very close to my heart. I've been 00:26:27.72\00:26:29.72 involved with that program since it 00:26:29.78\00:26:31.15 started, and you know, I think that the majority 00:26:31.22\00:26:36.19 of the Adventist young people don't know why 00:26:36.29\00:26:38.16 they are Seventh-Day Adventists. They're only 00:26:38.19\00:26:40.60 Adventist because their parents or their 00:26:40.70\00:26:42.53 grandparents were and they just grew up in it. 00:26:42.56\00:26:45.07 When people don't know why they believe what 00:26:45.13\00:26:48.94 they believe and they don't have any experience, 00:26:49.00\00:26:51.24 then it's easy for them to leave that faith or 00:26:51.31\00:26:55.04 that church. But Youth for Jesus, we decided- 00:26:55.11\00:26:58.68 it's the only ASI managed program. What we do is 00:26:58.75\00:27:04.25 we put young people- we give them an experience 00:27:04.32\00:27:07.72 to know why they are Seventh-Day Adventists 00:27:07.82\00:27:10.13 and the commission that we have as a church- 00:27:10.19\00:27:12.79 that it's not just for pastors or for older 00:27:12.89\00:27:15.70 people; it's for them. And when they have 00:27:15.76\00:27:19.07 a hands-on experience in winning souls, when 00:27:19.17\00:27:22.40 they see people throwing out their alcohol, 00:27:22.47\00:27:24.84 giving up cigarettes, when they see people get 00:27:24.94\00:27:28.78 baptized because they've done Bible studies with 00:27:28.88\00:27:31.98 them and they brought them to the meetings, 00:27:32.01\00:27:33.72 there's like nothing like that experience 00:27:33.78\00:27:36.89 for a young person to know that we have a 00:27:36.99\00:27:40.16 message that is Bible-based, that it 00:27:40.22\00:27:44.29 changes people's lives... And that experience 00:27:44.36\00:27:48.33 really changes their perspective on why 00:27:49.06\00:27:51.97 they're Seventh-Day Adventists. Just a real 00:27:52.03\00:27:54.27 short testimony. - Sure. - You know, a lot of 00:27:54.30\00:27:56.30 Youth for Jesus kids are bribed or forced 00:27:56.37\00:27:59.74 to come to the program, and we had such a 00:27:59.84\00:28:03.31 young man come. He had like, long, stringy, 00:28:03.35\00:28:06.98 greasy hair, and this was a few years ago 00:28:07.02\00:28:09.85 when they used to wear those pants down around 00:28:09.92\00:28:11.69 their knees. - Oh. - You know? It's just like, who 00:28:11.72\00:28:14.29 dressed you? [laughter] But anyway, he was 00:28:14.36\00:28:19.49 just grumpy all the time and he wouldn't talk 00:28:19.56\00:28:23.16 to anybody. Well, you know, like Youth for 00:28:23.23\00:28:25.73 Jesus kids are mostly kids that love Jesus 00:28:25.87\00:28:30.57 and they want to learn how to be a witness. 00:28:30.64\00:28:33.98 So, they surrounded him. I never talked 00:28:34.04\00:28:36.61 to him about his clothes except when he went 00:28:36.68\00:28:38.21 out on outreach, I told him the pants 00:28:38.28\00:28:40.22 had to fit. [laughter] But you know, about a 00:28:40.25\00:28:43.59 week to 10 days into the program, all of 00:28:43.65\00:28:46.32 a sudden, he started wearing clothes that 00:28:46.39\00:28:48.96 fit and he started washing his hair. One- 00:28:49.02\00:28:54.13 we always have testimony time, and kids are always 00:28:54.26\00:28:57.33 really eager to share testimonies. This guy 00:28:57.43\00:28:59.37 would just never do it. But one day, he came 00:28:59.43\00:29:02.14 up to the front and he said his Bible worker 00:29:02.20\00:29:04.21 made him do a Bible study the day before. 00:29:04.27\00:29:07.48 He said the person that he was giving the Bible 00:29:08.18\00:29:11.78 study to was so amazed at what he was hearing. 00:29:11.85\00:29:15.22 So, he shared that testimony. One day, 00:29:15.82\00:29:19.95 he got his hair cut, he washed it, he looked 00:29:19.99\00:29:23.09 good... His mother came to the ASI convention 00:29:23.19\00:29:28.46 like a month later, and she didn't even 00:29:28.53\00:29:31.03 recognize her son. She went right by him, 00:29:31.10\00:29:34.64 and he said, "Mom!" She turned around and 00:29:34.70\00:29:37.31 she was like, "Andy!" And she started crying, 00:29:37.37\00:29:41.24 then she told us that she had bribed him he 00:29:41.34\00:29:44.08 was going to go to college. She had bribed 00:29:44.18\00:29:46.72 him that he could have a car if he made it 00:29:46.78\00:29:49.42 through the program. He asked her not to 00:29:49.48\00:29:53.62 buy him a car to save that money and he went 00:29:53.69\00:29:56.49 as a student missionary after one year of 00:29:56.56\00:29:58.39 college. So, you know, when we can give kids 00:29:58.46\00:30:03.43 an experience on the message that we have 00:30:03.53\00:30:07.80 to share and they see that message working, 00:30:07.87\00:30:10.64 it really changes their lives. - It's amazing 00:30:10.74\00:30:14.74 to me how when we do something for someone 00:30:14.84\00:30:20.22 else, it waters our own spirits. And so 00:30:20.28\00:30:22.98 our faith is strengthened as a result of helping 00:30:23.05\00:30:26.76 people. One of the things that I found 00:30:26.82\00:30:30.89 about ASI is that, again, there are so many 00:30:30.96\00:30:35.73 difference projects and experiences. There's 00:30:35.76\00:30:39.33 something for everybody. It transcends age, it 00:30:39.43\00:30:42.70 transcends culture- there's something for 00:30:42.80\00:30:45.34 everybody. So, I just think it's such a 00:30:45.41\00:30:48.54 worthwhile program. - It is. And I've been able 00:30:48.61\00:30:52.38 to see. My first ASI was 1985, as you know; 00:30:52.45\00:30:55.78 you were there as a young... - We were 00:30:55.85\00:30:57.52 there together. - Yep. - In Montana. I remember 00:30:57.59\00:31:01.09 it was kind of cold. - Oh, yeah. - In August. 00:31:01.16\00:31:03.79 - Since we were 7,000 feet in the mountains or 00:31:03.86\00:31:07.90 something-big sky Montana. But the growth 00:31:07.96\00:31:11.43 has been amazing of the ASI meeting. I 00:31:11.53\00:31:16.24 think there may have been 150-200 people 00:31:16.30\00:31:18.01 or something like that. And now, of course, 00:31:18.07\00:31:20.21 there's thousands and thousands. But what 00:31:20.28\00:31:22.28 I've seen is what it does for people. Let's 00:31:22.34\00:31:25.85 take- you mentioned Donna and Denzel 00:31:25.91\00:31:27.98 McNeilus. Their kids- because they're 00:31:28.02\00:31:31.35 raised in ASI, so while they started- they 00:31:31.42\00:31:35.22 have the youth departments, I would 00:31:35.26\00:31:38.06 call them. But I remember- it's been 00:31:38.09\00:31:41.43 a number of years ago when they were teenagers, 00:31:41.50\00:31:43.93 Donna and Denzel's kids, and they said, 00:31:44.00\00:31:46.70 "What do you want to do for Christmas?" You 00:31:46.77\00:31:50.04 know what they did for Christmas? They said, 00:31:50.11\00:31:51.97 "Well, let's go to do evangelism in"-I think 00:31:52.04\00:31:55.64 it's Cambodia, you mentioned. "Let's go"- 00:31:55.68\00:31:58.15 now, these are teenage kids that could've gone 00:31:58.18\00:32:00.25 to Disney World, as we mentioned; they could've 00:32:00.35\00:32:02.48 gone skiing, they could've gone anywhere 00:32:02.55\00:32:04.62 they wanted to go, but they said, "Well, 00:32:04.72\00:32:07.16 let's go do evangelism." And they're like, 18, 00:32:07.22\00:32:09.99 19 years old. I'm sure you remember that. 00:32:10.09\00:32:12.09 - I think they were a lot younger. Maybe younger! And so 00:32:12.16\00:32:14.40 they actually would go to these countries, and 00:32:14.53\00:32:17.37 the kids would do evangelism. Now, 00:32:17.47\00:32:19.53 where did that come from? It came from 00:32:19.60\00:32:21.10 the training from not only the parents, but 00:32:21.20\00:32:23.74 ASI was such a huge part in that Youth for 00:32:23.81\00:32:27.11 Jesus. They'd get the kids to get a big bus 00:32:27.21\00:32:29.38 and go paint people's houses, go pass out 00:32:29.48\00:32:33.52 literature, go work every city they go to. They 00:32:33.62\00:32:36.82 take the young people and they would go out, 00:32:36.89\00:32:38.55 and the whole town, literally- be like 00:32:38.62\00:32:42.12 the disciples turning the city upside down. 00:32:42.16\00:32:44.46 The youth will draw attention for the whole 00:32:44.53\00:32:48.66 city to say, "What's going on?" You know? 00:32:48.70\00:32:51.00 The convention center, whether it's here, 00:32:51.03\00:32:53.07 and I guess this next year, Louisville. So, 00:32:53.13\00:32:56.54 it's been incredible. I've seen the Houghtons 00:32:56.60\00:32:58.91 and their kids, Dan- you know, the Houghtons 00:32:58.97\00:33:01.51 and their families, to be able to- young 00:33:01.58\00:33:03.68 people all being involved, and now members of 00:33:03.75\00:33:06.28 so many families I could name that the 00:33:06.35\00:33:09.38 youth that I believe ASI had such an impact on 00:33:09.45\00:33:13.25 their lives, because, again, it's missionary 00:33:13.36\00:33:15.62 work, it's volunteering work, and a lot of the 00:33:15.72\00:33:18.59 kids, as you said, weren't that interested; 00:33:18.66\00:33:20.60 but once they got involved, it's been 00:33:20.70\00:33:23.20 life-changing. So- - I think that's a lesson, 00:33:23.26\00:33:25.47 Danny, for a lot of parents. So, if you 00:33:25.53\00:33:27.87 want your children to change and to become 00:33:27.90\00:33:30.91 more spiritual, get them involved in an organization 00:33:30.97\00:33:33.91 like ASI, because that's how they can become 00:33:33.98\00:33:38.21 more active in spreading the gospel. And when 00:33:38.31\00:33:41.68 you do that, you'll grow. You can't help 00:33:41.75\00:33:44.22 but grow. - ASI's especially dear to us, 00:33:44.29\00:33:47.49 because it was a springboard for 3ABN. 00:33:47.56\00:33:50.56 I started telling the story in November 1984, 00:33:52.29\00:33:55.36 ? said, that the Lord impressed me to build 00:33:55.46\00:33:57.47 a television station to reach the world. 00:33:57.53\00:33:59.23 - What were you doing before that? - I'm a 00:33:59.30\00:34:00.74 carpenter, a contractor. My brother and I were 00:34:00.80\00:34:02.90 carpenters for about 15 years, and so now 00:34:02.97\00:34:05.47 I'm in my 30s, and I'm impressed to build 00:34:05.57\00:34:08.81 a tele- but I don't know anything about 00:34:08.88\00:34:10.48 television, had no background in television; 00:34:10.55\00:34:12.51 my daughter and I sing on different TV 00:34:12.55\00:34:14.75 stations, but everywhere we would go to these 00:34:14.82\00:34:17.09 other- and whether they were Baptist or 00:34:17.19\00:34:19.59 Pentecostal, they had television networks, and 00:34:19.65\00:34:22.69 I would say, "Where is Seventh-Day Adventists 00:34:22.79\00:34:24.66 in the media?" And one night, I was complaining 00:34:24.69\00:34:27.13 to the Lord about it, saying, "You know, the 00:34:27.20\00:34:29.40 church oughta do this and the church oughta 00:34:29.43\00:34:31.03 do that," and then I was impressed to want 00:34:31.07\00:34:33.54 you to build a television station that will reach 00:34:33.57\00:34:35.70 the world with an undiluted three angels' 00:34:35.77\00:34:37.67 messages, one that would counteract the 00:34:37.74\00:34:39.64 counterfeit. I knew that wasn't me, 'cause 00:34:39.74\00:34:42.04 I had no idea what that meant-the undiluted 00:34:42.08\00:34:44.91 three angels' messages I've been learning all 00:34:45.01\00:34:47.25 these years. But it was at that point that 00:34:47.32\00:34:50.89 I began to tell people what the Lord- my 00:34:50.99\00:34:53.02 daughter and I- my wife Kay had been killed in 00:34:53.09\00:34:55.79 an automobile accident, so my young daughter, 00:34:55.86\00:34:57.89 Melody and I, we were traveling on weekends, 00:34:57.96\00:35:00.60 and we'd sing in churches. So, we were invited to 00:35:00.66\00:35:05.57 go to ASI, and I never heard of ASI. Marvin 00:35:05.63\00:35:10.61 and Rosella McColpin, they were here from 00:35:10.67\00:35:13.41 Tennessee, and they said, "You need to go 00:35:13.48\00:35:14.81 to ASI." I said, "Well, I don't"- I'm like 00:35:14.88\00:35:18.01 the disciples. I didn't know whether there'd 00:35:18.08\00:35:20.58 be any Holy Spirit. I didn't know whether 00:35:20.65\00:35:22.48 there'd be any ASI. I had no idea. They 00:35:22.58\00:35:26.05 said, "Well, it's big sky Montana. You should 00:35:26.12\00:35:28.26 go." So I said, "Well..." We had no money to 00:35:28.32\00:35:30.99 get to there to fly there. We're just 00:35:31.09\00:35:33.06 starting in ministry. We were building a 00:35:33.13\00:35:35.53 building, and a man named Dale McBride 00:35:35.56\00:35:38.00 from Southern California, some of you may 00:35:38.10\00:35:40.50 remember, and Dale was a member for years. 00:35:40.57\00:35:43.30 And so he called and someone gave him my 00:35:43.41\00:35:46.78 name and he said, "Why don't you go to ASI? 00:35:46.88\00:35:49.91 I hear the story that you're going to build 00:35:49.98\00:35:51.71 this television station to reach the world. 00:35:51.78\00:35:53.72 Why don't you go to ASI?" And I said, "Well, 00:35:53.82\00:35:56.52 I'll think about it and pray about it, 00:35:56.55\00:35:58.89 but we're not..." I didn't want to say 00:35:58.95\00:36:01.72 we don't have any money to go; but I said, "Well, 00:36:01.79\00:36:04.16 if the Lord provides, we'll go." And he said, 00:36:04.23\00:36:06.70 "Okay. Well, you should go. People need to 00:36:06.76\00:36:10.83 hear what you're doing." So, I hung up the phone, 00:36:10.87\00:36:13.87 I got out and knelt beside my bed, started 00:36:13.94\00:36:16.77 praying, and "Lord, if you want me to go to 00:36:16.84\00:36:19.37 ASI"- the phone rang, and it was Dale McBride 00:36:19.44\00:36:22.64 again. He said, "I don't know what I'm 00:36:22.68\00:36:24.01 thinking about. If you go, I'll pay your way, 00:36:24.05\00:36:25.88 and I'll pay all your expenses; but I want 00:36:25.95\00:36:29.15 you just to go out there." So, I went to 00:36:29.22\00:36:30.99 ASI, was happy to go, met a number of people, 00:36:31.02\00:36:34.12 Ellsworth McKee, May Chung, for starters, 00:36:34.16\00:36:37.26 people that love the Lord. I'm going to call 00:36:37.33\00:36:41.03 it "invest" in the ministries around the 00:36:41.10\00:36:44.43 world. And so, I was privileged to meet them, 00:36:44.53\00:36:47.20 met Dan Houghton; it was his first ASI. He 00:36:47.30\00:36:50.21 and Karen, they were doing the audio, making 00:36:50.27\00:36:53.17 tapes of- they were young folk in their 00:36:53.24\00:36:56.64 late 20s, I think, from Wisconsin or so, and they 00:36:56.75\00:36:59.98 were there. So, I was there, and Kay Kuzma 00:37:00.02\00:37:02.75 was there, and so people kept saying, "Why don't 00:37:02.82\00:37:05.15 you tell your story?" I didn't know anybody, 00:37:05.25\00:37:08.26 so it worked out that I said, "Well, if the 00:37:08.32\00:37:11.06 Lord wants me to speak, He'll work it out." Friday, 00:37:11.09\00:37:14.00 that Friday was a free day. In the afternoon, 00:37:14.03\00:37:17.27 everyone was going to go on ski lifts. But 00:37:17.33\00:37:19.60 instead, it rained; it was raining hard. So, 00:37:19.67\00:37:22.14 Phil Winsted, who was president, and Henry 00:37:22.20\00:37:24.47 Martin, I think-one of the vice presidents- 00:37:24.51\00:37:26.74 called me out of a meeting. I didn't know 00:37:27.78\00:37:29.84 them. They said, "Can we impose on you to 00:37:29.88\00:37:33.28 tell your story? We have all these people 00:37:33.31\00:37:35.05 here, and we don't know what to do with 00:37:35.08\00:37:36.89 them." So, I told the story for the first 00:37:36.95\00:37:38.62 time of 3ABN of what we were doing, and ASI 00:37:38.72\00:37:42.56 caught the vision. That was the springboard 00:37:42.59\00:37:44.69 that literally, where 3ABN is today, literally 00:37:44.79\00:37:47.80 every continent around the world and millions, 00:37:47.83\00:37:50.93 and potentially, billion or two people can watch 00:37:51.00\00:37:53.27 (I have to give credit to the Lord). But through 00:37:54.10\00:37:56.91 the members of that small little group, 00:37:56.97\00:37:59.67 Steve, of ASI members of just a couple hundred 00:37:59.71\00:38:02.48 people, and then we've been able, once we went 00:38:02.51\00:38:05.05 on the air, we started televising ASI around 00:38:05.08\00:38:08.35 the world. And now, thousands of people 00:38:08.45\00:38:10.79 have joined from watching and saying, "Wow, that 00:38:10.85\00:38:14.32 looks like a great organization." So, 00:38:14.42\00:38:16.12 this is something that we can talk to you from 00:38:16.16\00:38:19.83 our heart. This crosses denominational barriers. 00:38:19.89\00:38:22.63 When you see the work that it's doing, the 00:38:22.70\00:38:25.17 outreach. And what ASI does, they get together 00:38:25.27\00:38:28.94 and they have offerings. And so, people- sometimes, 00:38:29.00\00:38:32.17 I've seen the offerings in the millions of one 00:38:32.24\00:38:34.58 Sabbath that's divided among all these ministries 00:38:34.71\00:38:38.01 that help these ministries go around the world go 00:38:38.11\00:38:42.28 back and give them something to work with 00:38:42.35\00:38:44.62 to build the schools, to build the hospitals, 00:38:44.69\00:38:47.26 to do the one-day churches, to teach 00:38:47.36\00:38:49.26 people about Jesus, to start farms-you know?- 00:38:49.32\00:38:53.06 in Africa, teaching people how to fish 00:38:53.09\00:38:56.13 rather than giving them the fishes, they say. 00:38:56.23\00:38:58.37 So, ASI doing this is a worldwide organization 00:38:58.47\00:39:02.54 that I believe that is responsible for hundreds 00:39:02.60\00:39:07.41 of thousands, and ye, maybe millions of people 00:39:07.48\00:39:09.81 are hearing about Jesus Christ that never would 00:39:09.91\00:39:12.68 have. So, I'm encouraging all of our viewers, 00:39:12.75\00:39:15.48 you're watching, we'll put an address up in 00:39:15.55\00:39:16.89 a little bit. But if you would like to support 00:39:16.92\00:39:18.89 it, it's a tax-deductible gift; and if you want 00:39:18.92\00:39:21.69 to support the work of God going around 00:39:21.72\00:39:24.09 the world, maybe you're not able to go, yourself, 00:39:24.16\00:39:27.23 maybe because you're confined to wherever 00:39:27.30\00:39:30.67 or you're old or your health is bad. But you 00:39:30.73\00:39:33.44 can say, "You know, I not only can pray for 00:39:33.50\00:39:36.04 this organization, but I can help financially, 00:39:36.10\00:39:38.61 because the money that's given"- people 00:39:38.64\00:39:40.61 are volunteering; you're not being paid. This 00:39:40.68\00:39:43.08 money that's coming in is going out to 00:39:43.14\00:39:46.65 help those who can't help themselves and to 00:39:46.72\00:39:50.15 serve the Lord. I mean, it's an incredible 00:39:50.22\00:39:52.85 organization, and I want to thank you all 00:39:52.89\00:39:55.09 for being here and for what you do in the work 00:39:55.16\00:39:57.83 that you put in. Leasa. - Well, you're talking 00:39:57.89\00:40:00.03 about the undiluted three angels' message. 00:40:00.10\00:40:02.33 See, we have a three angels' project. Yeah. 00:40:02.36\00:40:06.57 I want you to talk- 'cause I think that's 00:40:06.63\00:40:08.87 one of the neatest new things that ASI is 00:40:08.90\00:40:11.37 doing. It's really, really wonderful. - So, 00:40:11.41\00:40:15.04 a couple of ASI members got together, and they 00:40:15.08\00:40:18.11 were talking about this idea of the three 00:40:18.18\00:40:21.25 angels' message and how much of the world 00:40:21.28\00:40:25.65 today has a misunderstanding about that-and even 00:40:25.72\00:40:29.76 within the Seventh-Day Adventist Church who 00:40:29.82\00:40:31.69 proclaims itself to be the holder of that 00:40:31.76\00:40:34.90 treasure, as it were, to go and proclaim these 00:40:34.96\00:40:39.00 messages of the three angels of Revelation chapter 00:40:39.07\00:40:41.44 14 around the world that, maybe, we've 00:40:41.47\00:40:44.17 lost some of that fervor. And so, these individuals 00:40:44.24\00:40:47.34 got together, said, "Let's do something to 00:40:47.41\00:40:49.84 help change that tide. Let's put together"- 00:40:49.91\00:40:53.52 and they put together some posters. They 00:40:53.62\00:40:56.48 said, "We're going to print these up, and 00:40:56.55\00:40:58.72 we're going to distribute them to every single 00:40:58.75\00:41:01.06 Seventh-Day Adventist school across the United 00:41:01.82\00:41:04.46 States of America where they can hang them in 00:41:04.53\00:41:06.80 the classrooms, where the young people that 00:41:06.90\00:41:08.83 we're training can look and see this is what 00:41:08.86\00:41:12.63 the three angels' messages are and this 00:41:12.70\00:41:14.70 is how we can understand that. They went beyond 00:41:14.77\00:41:17.47 that, though - beyond just hanging a picture 00:41:17.54\00:41:19.74 in the classroom. They developed some curriculum 00:41:19.81\00:41:21.91 that the teachers could use to help instruct in 00:41:21.98\00:41:25.45 what the three angels' messages were all 00:41:25.55\00:41:27.55 about. But they even went beyond that and 00:41:27.62\00:41:29.92 they offered some grant money to schools who would 00:41:30.02\00:41:32.69 do projects related to what they learned when 00:41:32.75\00:41:35.59 they studied this curriculum. So, to 00:41:35.62\00:41:37.73 take it from the theory- seeing the picture, 00:41:37.79\00:41:40.03 understanding the message-in the theory 00:41:40.10\00:41:43.40 of it, to the practical application of it and 00:41:43.47\00:41:45.80 saying, "We're actually going to do something 00:41:45.83\00:41:47.64 now with this. We're going to go out; we're 00:41:47.67\00:41:49.77 going to share this message in some way 00:41:49.80\00:41:51.34 with someone." And so, it's another example 00:41:51.37\00:41:54.24 of what happens when business and professional 00:41:54.31\00:41:57.58 people get together. They have ideas, they have 00:41:57.65\00:42:00.22 passion, they have energy. And Danny, 00:42:00.25\00:42:03.45 just think what might happen if every single- 00:42:03.52\00:42:07.79 and we'll just confine ourselves to who we 00:42:09.16\00:42:11.03 are: the church; the Seventh-Day Adventist 00:42:11.09\00:42:12.73 Church. What if every single Seventh-Day 00:42:12.79\00:42:16.16 Adventist business and professional person said, 00:42:16.23\00:42:20.07 "I'm in 100%. I am going to get together with 00:42:21.04\00:42:27.14 other people who have that same mindset, 00:42:27.18\00:42:29.98 and we're going to set all of our other interests 00:42:30.05\00:42:33.11 aside, and we're going to focus on making sure 00:42:33.15\00:42:37.49 this gospel goes to the entire world," I 00:42:37.59\00:42:40.26 believe that this job could be accomplished 00:42:40.29\00:42:43.06 very quickly. There's a statement in Spirit of 00:42:43.12\00:42:46.16 Prophecy that says, "Not until the people 00:42:46.19\00:42:51.17 comprising the lay membership of the church," and this 00:42:51.23\00:42:53.90 is, kind of, my rendition of it. "Not until they 00:42:53.94\00:42:57.31 join hands with the ministers and administrators 00:42:57.37\00:43:00.68 of the church will this work be finished." And 00:43:00.78\00:43:04.05 so, the reason that I'm passionate about ASI 00:43:04.15\00:43:08.02 and believe that this organization can help 00:43:08.08\00:43:12.85 to change that where the laypeople and the 00:43:12.95\00:43:17.96 church are coming together in such a 00:43:17.99\00:43:19.33 way that the work is going to spread like 00:43:19.36\00:43:22.23 wildfire. You know, we saw the fires in 00:43:22.30\00:43:24.73 California recently and 60-70 mile-an-hour 00:43:24.80\00:43:28.54 winds, and you couldn't get out of the way 00:43:28.60\00:43:30.01 fast enough. I believe we're coming to a time 00:43:30.04\00:43:33.31 in Earth's history when that's the way 00:43:33.38\00:43:35.84 God's work is going to move forward. It's 00:43:35.88\00:43:38.45 going to move forward with such speed that 00:43:38.51\00:43:40.18 we can't imagine it right now; but to actually 00:43:40.22\00:43:43.35 spread this news around the world, I believe 00:43:43.42\00:43:46.29 the laypeople have the key to that. - Yeah. 00:43:46.32\00:43:48.36 Absolutely. You know, the technology's in 00:43:48.42\00:43:50.99 place. This program, for instance, is going 22,300 00:43:51.06\00:43:55.73 miles to space at the speed of light-186,200 00:43:55.76\00:44:00.07 miles per second-on nine different satellites 00:44:00.24\00:44:02.80 that encompass planet Earth, but it's more 00:44:02.84\00:44:05.31 than technology that's needed; it's you. It's 00:44:05.41\00:44:08.78 you and those folk that are joining, 00:44:08.84\00:44:11.11 members of ASI, because technology- anybody can, 00:44:11.15\00:44:15.35 in other words, non-Christian... There's 00:44:16.08\00:44:18.95 all kinds of secular networks that's now 00:44:19.02\00:44:21.76 sending signals around the world, but what 00:44:21.79\00:44:23.89 makes the difference is you! It's each and 00:44:23.93\00:44:26.39 every one of us. What are we going to do to 00:44:26.43\00:44:28.40 do our part to take this gospel of the kingdom 00:44:28.46\00:44:31.43 into all the world? So, we can get it there 00:44:31.50\00:44:34.27 with the speed of light, but we need commitment 00:44:34.30\00:44:36.24 from, as you said, each and every Adventist, 00:44:36.27\00:44:39.91 each and every business that we join hands 00:44:39.94\00:44:42.54 together, because the devil is in the business of 00:44:42.61\00:44:45.25 division. And so, what ASI does is bring people 00:44:45.31\00:44:49.65 together. It brings unity. So instead of us 00:44:49.68\00:44:52.82 each doing our own thing, as we say, or 00:44:52.89\00:44:56.06 as the Bible talks about the members of the church, 00:44:56.09\00:44:59.66 ASI brings us together. "Wow, Steve, you can do 00:44:59.73\00:45:03.43 this. We'll- well, I think I could help in- 00:45:03.47\00:45:05.60 well, you know what, Leasa, Philip, we can 00:45:05.63\00:45:07.87 do"- and all of a sudden, these ideas like the 00:45:07.90\00:45:10.11 three angels going out, like Rusty McKee, taking 00:45:10.21\00:45:13.74 a walk there in Collegedale- said, meeting young people, 00:45:13.78\00:45:17.71 knowing they were from the college and saying, 00:45:17.78\00:45:20.68 "Tell me about the three angels' messages," 00:45:20.72\00:45:23.15 and finding out a lot of the students didn't 00:45:23.22\00:45:25.99 even know. Then his talk to Dan Houghton, 00:45:26.05\00:45:28.52 and then to Dan, and then to you and to the 00:45:28.59\00:45:32.09 leadership. And all of a sudden, look what's 00:45:32.19\00:45:33.83 happening that the young people will 00:45:33.86\00:45:36.03 understand what's important about the 00:45:36.13\00:45:37.57 three angels' messages; it's an end-times message 00:45:37.67\00:45:40.50 for an end-times people. So, no matter 00:45:40.60\00:45:43.04 who you are, what denomination, if you're 00:45:43.14\00:45:44.77 a Christian and you want to know what's 00:45:44.84\00:45:46.37 happening, you understand the three angels' messages, 00:45:46.44\00:45:50.38 and it's going to give you peace in the midst 00:45:50.45\00:45:52.98 of the storm to know there's a Savior and 00:45:53.01\00:45:55.52 that He loves us and He's coming back and 00:45:55.58\00:45:57.52 He's gonna- we'll know what the devil is doing. 00:45:57.62\00:46:00.36 He's out to steal, kill, and to destroy; 00:46:00.46\00:46:02.09 but Jesus says, "I'm come to give you life 00:46:02.12\00:46:04.13 and give it more abundantly." And so, 00:46:04.23\00:46:06.23 the three angels' messages, Christ is the center 00:46:06.29\00:46:08.83 of that. And so, for ASI to catch that through 00:46:08.86\00:46:13.20 ASI members and business- people, and then to 00:46:13.27\00:46:17.24 join hands together to make sure every school... 00:46:17.31\00:46:20.34 I mean, these are just some of the 00:46:20.98\00:46:22.41 things, and we could talk for hours, and 00:46:22.48\00:46:25.01 you all could talk for hours, but we have 00:46:25.05\00:46:26.92 about 6 or 7 minutes and there may be some 00:46:26.98\00:46:28.98 things I know we want to talk a little bit, 00:46:29.08\00:46:31.35 Leasa, how people can become members; but 00:46:31.45\00:46:34.19 anything else that y'all want to share here, 00:46:34.26\00:46:35.92 we've got several more minutes. - Leasa, why 00:46:35.99\00:46:38.69 don't we talk just a little bit about the 00:46:38.73\00:46:40.06 membership category so people have an understanding 00:46:40.13\00:46:43.40 of that. - Yeah. So, there's a couple of- 00:46:43.47\00:46:47.10 anybody can be a member as long as they don't 00:46:48.50\00:46:51.87 get paid by a church entity. So like, if 00:46:51.97\00:46:56.41 you get paid by the church as a pastor or if you 00:46:56.44\00:47:01.85 work at an Adventist hospital... Anybody 00:47:01.92\00:47:04.12 that's in the yearbook. The church defines a 00:47:04.19\00:47:08.06 church employee as those that are included 00:47:08.16\00:47:11.23 in the yearbook. And so, we love them, we want 00:47:11.33\00:47:15.20 them to come to the convention, but they 00:47:15.26\00:47:17.77 can't be members-unless they're affiliated with 00:47:17.83\00:47:20.20 a supporting ministry or with a project 00:47:20.87\00:47:24.77 that's ASI membership- eligible. - So, the purpose 00:47:24.84\00:47:30.11 of the organization, ASI, is to engage the 00:47:30.18\00:47:33.45 laypeople with the church. And so, the 00:47:33.52\00:47:36.89 membership is comprised of the laypeople. We're 00:47:36.92\00:47:39.52 then joining hands with the church. So, 00:47:39.59\00:47:41.92 there are- if you own a business, you're 00:47:42.02\00:47:44.76 eligible for membership. If you are a professional 00:47:44.83\00:47:47.56 where you give people marching orders, you're 00:47:50.40\00:47:52.33 kind of like a boss, there's a category 00:47:52.40\00:47:55.37 for executive professional membership. If you're 00:47:55.44\00:47:58.84 professional, maybe just practicing as a 00:47:58.91\00:48:01.18 lawyer in another firm but don't own the 00:48:01.24\00:48:03.58 firm and you're not really in charge of 00:48:03.65\00:48:05.15 other people, there's an associate category. 00:48:05.21\00:48:07.58 Then, there are categories for the 00:48:09.12\00:48:11.05 ministries such as 501C3 ministries where they 00:48:12.05\00:48:16.96 can belong to ASI; therefore, all of their 00:48:17.03\00:48:19.79 employees or volunteers are also members of ASI 00:48:19.86\00:48:23.47 through their participation with that ministry. 00:48:23.50\00:48:26.50 And then we have the new one that Philip 00:48:26.53\00:48:28.34 mentioned, the young professional category, 00:48:28.37\00:48:30.24 which is addressing the need to engage young 00:48:30.31\00:48:35.54 people in the church. You know, I think a lot 00:48:35.64\00:48:38.21 of our young people leave because they're 00:48:38.25\00:48:40.22 just not engaged. So, we're looking to find 00:48:40.25\00:48:43.79 that right balance where we bring them in and 00:48:43.92\00:48:47.39 we help them to see what they can do, and 00:48:47.46\00:48:52.03 then to actually engage in doing that. And I 00:48:52.09\00:48:53.50 believe if they will do that, it will 00:48:53.56\00:48:55.70 change their life, first of all. And 00:48:55.76\00:48:57.80 secondly, they won't leave because they're 00:48:57.83\00:49:00.74 going to be involved. - And membership has 00:49:00.80\00:49:02.70 a fee, but for a young professional, it's 00:49:02.77\00:49:05.27 very, very reasonable. It's $25 a year. That's 00:49:05.37\00:49:09.64 a pizza. [laughter] They could give up 00:49:09.71\00:49:12.15 one pizza to join an organization like this. 00:49:12.21\00:49:16.02 And one thing that I really like about our convention 00:49:16.08\00:49:20.46 is that we spend a lot more resources on the 00:49:20.52\00:49:23.22 youth program, the children's program, at the convention. 00:49:23.26\00:49:26.06 They are top-notch. I mean, it's like, better 00:49:26.09\00:49:29.66 than going to the best camp meeting. We spend 00:49:29.73\00:49:32.77 a lot of resources on children's programs, so 00:49:32.83\00:49:35.24 the young families, young professionals, 00:49:35.30\00:49:37.81 bring them. My nieces, my son-my nieces and 00:49:37.91\00:49:43.24 nephews that have gone to ASI for years, all 00:49:43.31\00:49:46.11 their lifelong friends are their ASI friends. 00:49:46.21\00:49:50.19 And so, it's a really good organization to 00:49:50.25\00:49:54.69 bring your children to expose them to it, like 00:49:54.76\00:49:57.43 Yvonne said: when they get exposed to how they 00:49:57.49\00:50:01.63 are the church of today, not tomorrow. Then, 00:50:01.70\00:50:06.50 they have a passion for ministry for witnessing. 00:50:06.57\00:50:11.47 - Steve, GYC came from there. Tell us a little 00:50:11.51\00:50:15.04 bit, one of you. - So, there was a group of 00:50:15.11\00:50:17.81 young people who got together and said, "We 00:50:17.85\00:50:19.18 want to do something for ourselves," and they 00:50:19.21\00:50:22.15 came to ASI and said, "Would you be willing 00:50:22.22\00:50:24.19 to assist us?" So, ASI kind of mothered 00:50:24.22\00:50:27.56 the organization for a while and assisted 00:50:27.62\00:50:30.59 them in getting up and on their feet. 00:50:30.66\00:50:32.23 Powerful organization, now-thousands of young 00:50:32.29\00:50:34.76 people coming each December-January 00:50:34.83\00:50:37.50 time frame, they get together, they pray, 00:50:37.57\00:50:39.47 they empower each other to go out with a stronger 00:50:39.53\00:50:42.80 passion and desire to see God's work finished. 00:50:42.90\00:50:46.31 So, it's another child, you might say, of ASI. 00:50:46.37\00:50:50.61 - Yeah. And when you reach 35 at GYC, you 00:50:50.71\00:50:55.22 have to pay old person's tax. [laughter] So, 00:50:55.28\00:50:59.49 it's a good thing when they have young families 00:50:59.55\00:51:02.29 from GYC. They can graduate to ASI. Still 00:51:02.32\00:51:06.73 can be involved with GYC, but they can graduate 00:51:06.76\00:51:09.26 to ASI and be involved. - Okay, great. Philip, in one 00:51:09.33\00:51:13.20 minute or less, why don't you look into the 00:51:13.27\00:51:15.20 camera and tell folk why they should join 00:51:15.24\00:51:16.97 ASI? - You're not just coming to church 00:51:17.04\00:51:19.64 to sit on the pew and have a good show on 00:51:19.74\00:51:22.08 Sabbath morning; God is calling each one of 00:51:22.11\00:51:24.71 us to get involved. So, ask Him, "How can I get 00:51:24.78\00:51:28.08 involved? How can I make a difference? 00:51:28.12\00:51:29.88 How can I use my gifts and talents in service 00:51:29.95\00:51:32.42 for the Master?" So, ASI is all about sharing 00:51:32.45\00:51:36.19 Christ in the marketplace and engaging in serving 00:51:36.26\00:51:39.66 Him. One of the things that just happened was 00:51:39.69\00:51:42.76 we just went to Brazil with Denzel and with 00:51:42.83\00:51:46.60 Barbara Taylor, and we had 800 video projectors 00:51:46.67\00:51:51.41 that we gave away, we trained 800 laypeople 00:51:51.51\00:51:54.81 on how to use the New Beginnings evangelistic 00:51:54.88\00:51:57.45 series, and we gave them 800 video projectors 00:51:57.51\00:52:00.42 with just the flash drive, and they're now 00:52:00.52\00:52:02.85 equipped to go and preach the gospel 00:52:02.92\00:52:05.02 around the world. We have the picture roll 00:52:05.09\00:52:07.19 project which is an amazing project which 00:52:07.26\00:52:09.99 you'll hear more about, I think, in another 00:52:10.09\00:52:11.93 program. But we have picture rolls, which you 00:52:11.99\00:52:14.70 can use in Africa, in parts of the world 00:52:14.76\00:52:17.33 where they don't have media, they don't have 00:52:17.37\00:52:19.73 power, they don't have PowerPoint, you 00:52:19.80\00:52:22.70 can preach the gospel with just picture rolls. 00:52:22.74\00:52:25.14 - I'm sold; how about you? [laughter] - Me too! - So, 00:52:25.21\00:52:28.18 what we want to do is we want to put up an 00:52:28.24\00:52:30.18 address if you would like to learn more about 00:52:30.28\00:52:32.28 ASI, how you can become a member. Maybe you 00:52:32.35\00:52:35.02 want to support it financially. You can do 00:52:35.08\00:52:37.42 so at the following address. 00:52:37.45\00:52:40.12 Adventist-laymen's Services & Industries, 00:52:41.06\00:52:43.26 or ASI, is involved with numerous projects.
