I'm Jason Bradley, and I'm so 00:01:11.60\00:01:13.77 excited that you can join us today. We are 00:01:13.84\00:01:16.64 going to talk to a family that is heavily 00:01:16.74\00:01:20.04 involved in the mission field. So, let's go ahead 00:01:20.11\00:01:24.75 and introduce our guests. We have Norman Hansen. 00:01:24.81\00:01:27.85 He is a pilot and project manager for Adventist 00:01:27.92\00:01:31.02 World Aviation in Nicaragua. - That's right. - We 00:01:31.12\00:01:34.82 have Nancy Hansen who is the project manager- 00:01:34.86\00:01:37.76 and his lovely wife- the Adventist World 00:01:37.83\00:01:40.90 Aviation in Nicaragua. I gotta make sure I 00:01:40.96\00:01:43.87 say that right. And then we have two of their 00:01:43.93\00:01:47.37 children, Steven Hansen and Melanie Hansen. 00:01:47.44\00:01:50.77 I'm so happy that you guys could be here 00:01:51.14\00:01:52.81 with us today. - It's a real pleasure for us 00:01:52.94\00:01:55.41 to be here. We're excited and nervous, 00:01:55.44\00:01:58.88 but we're really, really happy to be here. Thank 00:01:58.95\00:02:01.28 you. - Yes, thank you so much. We're so happy 00:02:01.35\00:02:03.65 to be here. - You're welcome, you're welcome! 00:02:03.75\00:02:06.32 You know, I can't wait to get into your story, 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.86 your journey, testimonies, and the mission field 00:02:10.93\00:02:14.36 and all of those things; but before we jump into 00:02:14.46\00:02:17.80 that, I'd like to go to a song by Mary Grace 00:02:17.87\00:02:22.14 entitled, "We Shall Behold Him." 00:02:22.20\00:02:25.87 Wow. God has blessed Mary Grace with a tremendous 00:07:31.98\00:07:35.35 gift. What a beautiful song. Now, Mr. Norman, 00:07:35.45\00:07:41.02 I want to get to know you. I want to start with 00:07:41.12\00:07:44.33 you. Tell me a little bit about your background. 00:07:44.36\00:07:46.93 - Okay. I was born in Alberta, Canada and 00:07:47.00\00:07:51.03 grew up there on a farm. And when I was 00:07:51.10\00:07:54.44 very young, our family became Seventh-Day 00:07:54.50\00:07:58.67 Adventist and just grew up there. I was 00:07:58.74\00:08:02.71 always interested in flying. I remember my dad. 00:08:02.78\00:08:08.05 He got his pilot's license when I was 00:08:08.08\00:08:10.75 young-maybe 9 or 10. And a little later on, 00:08:10.85\00:08:14.56 he got his own airplane. I was just so excited; 00:08:14.66\00:08:20.10 I just couldn't believe it, so I learned to fly 00:08:20.16\00:08:24.43 in the back seat of his airplane on our farm 00:08:24.50\00:08:28.10 strip in a Piper Super Cub. - A Piper Super 00:08:28.20\00:08:32.81 Cup? Now, what does that look like? What is... 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.74 - It's a fabric-covered airplane. It's an extremely 00:08:35.84\00:08:40.35 simple airplane, but it's really nice for 00:08:40.42\00:08:44.65 backcountry bush flying. - Okay. - So, he let me 00:08:45.95\00:08:51.29 fly from the back seat and I learned to fly when 00:08:51.36\00:08:53.93 I was very young. - Wow! So you were flying 00:08:54.03\00:08:57.60 planes at a young age. Did you have a passion 00:08:57.70\00:09:01.00 for flying even before your dad got that plane, 00:09:01.10\00:09:04.84 or...? - Oh, yes! I remember going out and 00:09:04.94\00:09:08.68 just lying in the grass, looking up at the 00:09:08.74\00:09:10.75 clouds, and imagining flying around those 00:09:10.85\00:09:13.45 clouds. - Wow. Nice. - So, yeah. It's been 00:09:13.52\00:09:16.32 a passion all my life. - Nice. And were you 00:09:16.38\00:09:19.32 raised Adventist? - Yes, essentially, because 00:09:19.42\00:09:22.46 my parents became Seventh-Day Adventist 00:09:22.52\00:09:24.89 when I was still very young. - Nice. And 00:09:24.96\00:09:27.66 where did your passion for the mission field 00:09:27.76\00:09:30.73 come into play? How did you become passionate 00:09:31.53\00:09:33.40 about that? - Well, that's the other passion 00:09:33.47\00:09:35.70 that I always had. It always seemed like I 00:09:35.74\00:09:37.54 wanted to do something. As I got a little older, 00:09:37.61\00:09:40.08 I began to look through the call book when I was 00:09:40.98\00:09:46.61 in school and college. I thought, "Oh, I'd love to 00:09:46.68\00:09:49.98 go to this place. I'd love to go to Africa. 00:09:50.09\00:09:51.85 I'd like to do this; I'd like to do that." 00:09:51.92\00:09:53.86 So, I decided- and I had a brother who also 00:09:53.92\00:09:57.13 went as a student missionary to Japan. 00:09:57.19\00:10:00.10 Then later on, I went and worked in the Marshall 00:10:00.23\00:10:05.63 Islands for a year. I taught math and English 00:10:05.70\00:10:09.10 and some things there for a year. So, that 00:10:09.20\00:10:11.81 really set me on the direction for mission 00:10:11.87\00:10:15.81 work. - Okay. And Nancy, what about you? Tell us 00:10:15.88\00:10:19.18 a little bit about your background. - Well, I 00:10:19.25\00:10:22.68 was born in Nicaragua, and I grew up in Costa 00:10:22.78\00:10:28.86 Rica. I had- some people might say, "Wow, so 00:10:28.92\00:10:34.50 going back to Nicaragua for you must've been 00:10:34.56\00:10:37.67 like going back home," but not really, because 00:10:37.73\00:10:42.80 we had a very traumatic experience as a child. 00:10:42.90\00:10:46.14 - Oh, what happened? My father, he was a 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.78 colporteur: a person who sells Christian books. 00:10:49.84\00:10:53.65 At the time, war broke in Nicaragua. He was 00:10:54.75\00:11:01.82 mistakenly put in jail and he was accused of 00:11:01.92\00:11:07.93 being one of the rebels and one of the people 00:11:08.03\00:11:12.27 that wanted to overthrow the government at the time. 00:11:12.33\00:11:16.00 So, he was put in jail for that reason. He was 00:11:16.07\00:11:20.84 tortured and it was very traumatic. I never wanted 00:11:20.94\00:11:28.72 to return to Nicaragua after that, but God, 00:11:28.82\00:11:32.32 in an amazing way, He was able to get him 00:11:32.42\00:11:37.03 out of jail. - Okay, so your dad ended up getting 00:11:37.09\00:11:41.73 arrested for, like, two weeks? - Yes, it was 00:11:41.80\00:11:45.17 two weeks that he was in jail. - Yeah. It was an 00:11:45.23\00:11:50.77 incredible experience that he went through. 00:11:50.84\00:11:53.14 He was accused of being one of the rebels, and 00:11:53.24\00:11:57.55 because he had all this money with him, they 00:11:57.61\00:12:02.18 didn't believe his story that he was a pastor 00:12:02.25\00:12:04.72 and a preacher. - Okay. - So, it was a bad 00:12:04.79\00:12:08.26 situation, so they put him into prison, right, 00:12:08.32\00:12:11.36 Nancy? - Yes. When we heard the news, we were 00:12:11.39\00:12:14.23 devastated, of course, and people were praying 00:12:14.30\00:12:18.10 for him. After a lot of fasting and prayer, 00:12:18.20\00:12:24.01 finally a ransom was paid on his behalf to 00:12:24.11\00:12:29.04 get out of jail. He was told to go straight to 00:12:29.14\00:12:32.95 the airport and not stop anywhere. But 00:12:33.08\00:12:37.29 for some reason that he didn't himself 00:12:37.35\00:12:39.79 understand, he decided to just stop at the mission 00:12:39.85\00:12:43.02 guest house and changed the clothing he had and 00:12:43.12\00:12:49.26 washed his face. When he opened his briefcase 00:12:49.30\00:12:52.17 where, previously, all the books were for 00:12:52.27\00:12:54.27 colporting, he found that instead of the 00:12:54.47\00:12:58.07 books and the money that he had collected 00:12:58.17\00:13:00.24 were just a stash of ammunition. - Ohh, 00:13:00.31\00:13:06.05 no! - They had set him up. - Yeah. - And he 00:13:06.15\00:13:09.82 would've been arrested and he would've never, 00:13:09.92\00:13:11.89 never left. - So they wanted him to go straight 00:13:11.99\00:13:14.42 to the airport, not stop anywhere, because 00:13:14.49\00:13:17.33 they wanted him to get caught with that ammunition 00:13:17.39\00:13:19.53 at the airport. - Exactly. - Wow. 00:13:19.59\00:13:21.96 - So they were so nervous, but somebody recommended, 00:13:22.00\00:13:26.13 "Just hide, bury all the ammunition in the ground," 00:13:26.20\00:13:31.14 and they did that very quickly. Then, they took 00:13:31.21\00:13:34.08 a taxi and they headed to the airport, and they 00:13:34.18\00:13:37.18 were nervous that there would be other traps 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.71 along the way. But God was faithful to them 00:13:39.81\00:13:43.22 and they were able to get out of the country. 00:13:43.28\00:13:45.19 But I remember with my family, we went to Costa 00:13:45.29\00:13:48.42 Rica to meet him and my mom. I was just so 00:13:48.52\00:13:54.53 excited to see him, you know? And my mom, I 00:13:54.63\00:13:57.47 remember her saying, "No, no, try not to 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.24 hug him, because his ribs are broken," and 00:14:00.30\00:14:02.54 his face had changed. He had bruises and 00:14:02.60\00:14:06.14 wounds all over his body, so I couldn't 00:14:06.21\00:14:10.28 really hug him. After that experience, I was 00:14:10.35\00:14:13.72 so terrified. I decided in my heart, "I will 00:14:13.78\00:14:18.09 never go back to Nicaragua again." - I could 00:14:18.15\00:14:20.96 understand that. - But of course, God had other 00:14:20.99\00:14:22.99 plans for us. - Yes! - He always does. - So, 00:14:23.09\00:14:28.23 who do you have sitting next to you? - I'm 00:14:28.30\00:14:31.83 Steven; my name is Steven Hansen. I'm 17. I grew 00:14:31.90\00:14:38.04 up in Guam, actually- the small island of Guam. 00:14:38.11\00:14:43.04 My brother, too; I have an older brother. We've 00:14:43.11\00:14:47.25 been in this together- this mission trip venture. 00:14:47.32\00:14:51.05 - Nice. Nice. And Melanie? How did you 00:14:51.15\00:14:56.19 get involved in mission work? - Well, ever since I 00:14:56.26\00:15:00.20 was very little, I always wanted to be 00:15:00.30\00:15:02.66 a missionary. So when I learned that we were 00:15:02.73\00:15:05.43 going to be going to Nicaragua as missionaries, 00:15:05.47\00:15:07.84 I was thrilled. I was just so excited. I didn't 00:15:07.90\00:15:11.77 really know what would be involved at first, 00:15:11.87\00:15:14.08 so it was hard when we had to sell our home 00:15:14.18\00:15:17.11 where I had grown up, then my pets, and say 00:15:17.18\00:15:21.38 goodbye to friends and grandparents but, 00:15:21.48\00:15:24.12 despite all that, was still really excited. 00:15:24.19\00:15:26.76 - Nice. So, you've always had a passion 00:15:26.82\00:15:28.89 for mission work? - Yeah, definitely. - Nice. 00:15:28.96\00:15:31.33 Now, I see that you guys have different 00:15:31.39\00:15:34.66 stripes and stuff on your collars here. What do 00:15:34.73\00:15:38.80 those stripes represent? - Well, the stripes can 00:15:38.87\00:15:41.87 represent the level that you've attained in your 00:15:41.97\00:15:45.57 flying. I have four stripes as the captain. So, if 00:15:45.67\00:15:52.18 you're the captain, you get four stripes. - Got you. 00:15:52.25\00:15:55.18 - It can mean different things, but yeah. I 00:15:55.28\00:15:58.49 finally earned my four stripes after many years. 00:15:58.55\00:16:01.42 - Nice. And then the one stripe? - The one 00:16:01.52\00:16:03.56 stripe... They are ground support. So, 00:16:03.63\00:16:07.16 they're helping us- they work on the radio, 00:16:07.23\00:16:11.23 they maintain the airplane, fuel it up, 00:16:11.33\00:16:14.70 wash the airplane, things like that. - Nice. You 00:16:14.80\00:16:19.97 know, one of the things that I love as I'm 00:16:20.04\00:16:22.04 looking at you guys is just the fact that you 00:16:22.11\00:16:24.65 are a family that is involved in helping 00:16:24.71\00:16:29.12 other people. You know? You guys have answered 00:16:29.18\00:16:32.05 the call that God's placed on your lives, 00:16:32.12\00:16:34.16 and I think that is amazing to see you as 00:16:34.22\00:16:37.19 a unit, partaking in that. I want to talk 00:16:37.26\00:16:41.30 about AWA, Adventist World Aviation. We 00:16:41.40\00:16:46.87 actually have a video that is going to tell 00:16:46.94\00:16:49.57 us a little bit more about it, and then you 00:16:49.67\00:16:51.27 can expound upon that as we come out of that 00:16:51.34\00:16:54.04 roll. - That'll be great. - Adventist World 00:16:54.11\00:16:57.71 Aviation has aviation outpost stationed all 00:16:57.78\00:17:01.32 around the world with the mission of bringing 00:17:01.38\00:17:04.35 humanitarian aid and the love of Jesus to 00:17:04.42\00:17:07.82 difficult-to-reach areas. One of Adventist World 00:17:07.89\00:17:11.49 Aviation's outposts is situated in the 00:17:11.59\00:17:14.26 northeastern corner of Nicaragua by the border 00:17:14.33\00:17:17.93 of Honduras. This outpost is dedicated to 00:17:18.00\00:17:21.47 serving the Miskito people of this region. 00:17:21.57\00:17:24.94 This part of the country is extremely isolated 00:17:25.07\00:17:28.28 from the rest of the country due to its 00:17:28.38\00:17:30.65 geographic location. Mountain ranges and 00:17:30.75\00:17:33.72 impermeable jungle separate the Miskito 00:17:33.78\00:17:36.79 people from the advancements civilization provides. 00:17:36.85\00:17:40.96 In the remote village of La Tranquera 00:17:41.06\00:17:44.16 Nicaragua, Adventist World Aviation has 00:17:44.26\00:17:47.43 a mission base that transports critically 00:17:47.50\00:17:50.20 ill and emergency patients from remote villages 00:17:50.30\00:17:54.37 to a hospital where they can receive the 00:17:54.50\00:17:57.14 life-saving care they need. The region has 00:17:57.21\00:18:00.08 very limited medical care, and many suffer 00:18:00.21\00:18:03.45 and often lose their lives because they cannot 00:18:03.55\00:18:06.21 receive the care they need to survive. For 00:18:06.31\00:18:08.95 this reason, the AWA air base is in an 00:18:09.02\00:18:12.09 excellent location and able to make an enormous 00:18:12.19\00:18:15.16 impact by utilizing aircraft to transport 00:18:15.26\00:18:18.39 patients. The La Tranquera Nicaragua mission 00:18:18.49\00:18:22.73 aviation base has transported well over 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.60 600 patients. This type of aid was nonexistent 00:18:25.70\00:18:29.80 in this area previous to this air base's 00:18:29.87\00:18:33.04 operations. The Tranquera air base is home to 00:18:33.07\00:18:37.38 the first and only aircraft that flew 00:18:37.45\00:18:40.48 medical evacuations from remote villages 00:18:40.55\00:18:43.39 and delivered patients to a larger town called 00:18:43.49\00:18:47.12 Puerto Cabezas. This aviation mission was 00:18:47.22\00:18:51.06 able to win the trust of government officials 00:18:51.13\00:18:53.56 and is warmly accepted and recognized by the 00:18:53.63\00:18:56.93 healthcare system as a vital component to 00:18:56.97\00:19:00.17 help remote villages receive these medical 00:19:00.24\00:19:02.64 emergency flights that they desperately need. 00:19:02.70\00:19:06.04 This mission base is well known among the 00:19:06.14\00:19:09.44 people of this region, and everyone knows 00:19:09.54\00:19:11.75 that they can depend on them when they are in 00:19:11.81\00:19:14.02 need or have an emergency. Travel in this region 00:19:14.08\00:19:18.85 of Nicaragua is very difficult. The region 00:19:18.95\00:19:21.66 is covered with pine savannas, lush jungles, 00:19:21.69\00:19:24.89 and winding rivers. Road systems were 00:19:24.96\00:19:27.76 never fully developed here, and this makes 00:19:27.80\00:19:30.20 transportation very difficult. A trip that 00:19:30.27\00:19:33.10 would take one-and-a-half hour by flight can take 00:19:33.17\00:19:36.64 days if it were to be traveled by boat or 00:19:36.71\00:19:39.57 land. Often, land travel isn't possible simply 00:19:39.64\00:19:43.48 because there is no road system to reach 00:19:43.55\00:19:46.35 the remote village. Many of the Miskito 00:19:46.41\00:19:49.45 people live in extreme isolation. When an emergency 00:19:49.52\00:19:53.15 occurs, many of them don't survive injuries 00:19:53.19\00:19:56.49 or they suffer greatly because they cannot 00:19:56.56\00:19:59.33 reach medical care in a timely manner. If 00:19:59.39\00:20:02.53 patients do not have access to these flights, 00:20:02.60\00:20:05.13 they must travel by foot, boat, or bus- 00:20:05.20\00:20:08.97 a journey that can take more than 48 hours. 00:20:09.04\00:20:12.21 When an emergency strikes, patients may 00:20:12.27\00:20:15.54 need to reach care within a few hours 00:20:15.61\00:20:17.91 in order to survive. Having the air base 00:20:18.01\00:20:20.75 here allows for quick and expedient extractions 00:20:20.82\00:20:24.45 that have saved hundreds of lives. This remote 00:20:24.52\00:20:28.62 air base is currently operated by the Hansen 00:20:28.69\00:20:31.39 family who arrived in 2017. The La Tranquera 00:20:31.46\00:20:36.16 air base is anticipating the arrival of a new 00:20:36.23\00:20:39.47 air craft to be placed in the field. 00:20:39.53\00:20:42.07 Wings of Hope in St. Louis, Missouri provided 00:20:42.20\00:20:44.71 AWA with a highly modified Cessna 182 00:20:44.77\00:20:49.38 for a very moderate cost and has prepared the 00:20:49.44\00:20:52.58 aircraft for deployment for Nicaragua. This 00:20:52.61\00:20:55.58 aircraft will be an enormous blessing, and 00:20:55.62\00:20:58.45 plans are underway to reach even more remote 00:20:58.52\00:21:01.92 villages with this life-saving service. 00:21:02.02\00:21:05.33 This mission base daily exemplifies the love 00:21:05.39\00:21:09.10 that Christ asked His disciples to share. Here 00:21:09.16\00:21:12.40 in Nicaragua, Adventist World Aviation missionaries 00:21:12.47\00:21:15.90 take this call very seriously as they enter 00:21:16.00\00:21:19.31 into the most remote villages, seeking to 00:21:19.37\00:21:22.71 provide the love, hope, and healing of Jesus Christ. 00:21:22.81\00:21:28.35 - Wow. What a powerful organization. I mean, it 00:21:30.95\00:21:33.36 seems like without these flights, this could be a 00:21:33.42\00:21:36.02 matter of life and death for some of these people. 00:21:36.12\00:21:39.06 How did you get involved with this organization? 00:21:39.13\00:21:42.36 - Well, I told you I was always interested 00:21:42.46\00:21:44.47 in mission work, so we actually- I worked 00:21:44.53\00:21:48.34 with Adventist World Radio. - Okay. AWR? 00:21:48.40\00:21:52.84 - AWR. I always get those confused; they're 00:21:52.91\00:21:55.34 so close. [laughter] For actually 13 years. 00:21:55.44\00:21:58.85 So, I was a missionary, working and actually- 00:21:58.91\00:22:02.35 excuse me-met Nancy in Costa Rica, and we 00:22:02.38\00:22:07.36 had an amazing life. Two of our three children 00:22:07.42\00:22:10.73 were born on the island of Guam. - Mmk. - But 00:22:10.83\00:22:16.60 we decided to return to Canada so that we 00:22:16.67\00:22:18.77 could- the kids could know their grandparents- 00:22:18.83\00:22:22.70 on my side, at least. So, life was good. I 00:22:22.77\00:22:30.11 worked at an Adventist college there in Alberta. 00:22:30.25\00:22:34.05 But as time went by, it just felt like something 00:22:34.12\00:22:38.65 was missing. I remember we were reading-excuse 00:22:38.75\00:22:44.83 me-the parable of the 10 virgins. It says in 00:22:44.89\00:22:51.63 there that all 10 slept. There came a time when 00:22:51.70\00:22:56.97 we knew that we were asleep. So, we just 00:22:57.01\00:23:00.91 began to pray. We just began to pray and ask 00:23:00.98\00:23:03.75 God to wake us up. It wasn't long; very soon 00:23:03.81\00:23:09.08 after that, my father... I have to tell you. 00:23:09.15\00:23:14.82 I learned to fly when I was 17, but after I 00:23:14.89\00:23:19.69 got my pilot's license, it was a very short 00:23:19.76\00:23:23.13 period of time and I went off to college. 00:23:23.20\00:23:26.94 My father sold his airplane, and I didn't fly again 00:23:27.04\00:23:31.57 for over 30 years. - Wow, over 30 years? 00:23:31.67\00:23:36.34 - So, I was one of those pilots that was on the 00:23:36.41\00:23:38.71 ground, always looking up in the sky. - Yeah. 00:23:38.81\00:23:41.38 - But I just couldn't afford it. - Mhm. 00:23:41.48\00:23:45.12 - That was okay. I was enjoying life and I was 00:23:45.22\00:23:49.96 working, but like I said, when that 00:23:50.03\00:23:51.66 restlessness came in, something strange 00:23:51.69\00:23:54.00 happened to me. I couldn't even explain. 00:23:54.10\00:23:56.03 I remember going home and telling Nancy that 00:23:56.06\00:23:57.70 I... "I don't know what's wrong with me, 00:23:57.77\00:24:01.14 but every time I hear an airplane, I'm looking 00:24:01.20\00:24:05.91 up in the sky." I started looking in the classified 00:24:06.01\00:24:09.51 ads for airplanes for sale, and I started 00:24:09.58\00:24:13.55 checking into what it would take to get my 00:24:13.62\00:24:15.88 pilot's license reactivated. It was always too 00:24:15.98\00:24:19.15 expensive. I couldn't afford it. I remember my 00:24:19.22\00:24:26.29 father, now who was in his 80s- I got a call 00:24:26.36\00:24:31.53 from him one day, and it was very strange, 00:24:31.63\00:24:33.50 because he called and he says, "Norman, I 00:24:33.60\00:24:37.61 probably shouldn't be telling you this, but 00:24:37.74\00:24:39.37 I just talked to the chairman of the board 00:24:39.44\00:24:41.74 of Adventist World Aviation, and they 00:24:41.81\00:24:44.31 really need pilots. They're looking for 00:24:44.38\00:24:46.48 pilots." I hadn't even heard of Adventist 00:24:46.55\00:24:49.72 World Aviation. Somehow, even being a pilot, I'd 00:24:49.78\00:24:54.16 never learned about it. And he says, "You 00:24:54.22\00:24:56.56 should give them a call." So I talked to Don? 00:24:56.59\00:25:02.93 who was the chairman of the Canadian branch 00:25:03.00\00:25:06.07 of Adventist World Aviation. I said, "Well, 00:25:06.13\00:25:10.77 I'm not very qualified. I haven't flown for 00:25:10.81\00:25:12.24 30 years. They've got to be more qualified 00:25:12.27\00:25:15.71 pilots than that." He says, "Well, you should 00:25:15.74\00:25:17.51 talk to our vice president." So I 00:25:17.58\00:25:21.02 called, I talked with the vice president, 00:25:21.08\00:25:24.15 Jud Wickwire. I said, "What's your greatest 00:25:24.19\00:25:28.02 need?" I expected him to say, "Well, we need 00:25:28.06\00:25:33.09 money," because it costs a lot of money to fly 00:25:33.13\00:25:35.06 airplanes; I knew that, right? He says, "Our 00:25:35.10\00:25:37.70 greatest need is we need pilots. We need 00:25:37.77\00:25:41.14 people to come." So, the wheels just started 00:25:41.20\00:25:47.61 turning and I wanted to do that; just felt like 00:25:47.68\00:25:53.52 God had led us to that. So, it wasn't 00:25:53.62\00:25:57.89 long after that; about 4 or 5 months later, 00:25:57.95\00:26:00.12 we then became missionaries in training. But that's 00:26:00.22\00:26:03.66 when Nancy's dilemma kicked in. Because of 00:26:03.76\00:26:08.46 the background that she had in Nicaragua, 00:26:08.56\00:26:10.80 the next step was, "Well, where would he 00:26:10.87\00:26:12.83 go?" They said, "You know, there's this air 00:26:12.93\00:26:14.50 base in Nicaragua that we really need. 00:26:14.60\00:26:17.37 You speak some Spanish, the two of you, so 00:26:17.47\00:26:21.21 it'd be a great fit," but for Nancy, that 00:26:21.28\00:26:24.38 was when her challenge began. - Yeah, that's 00:26:24.45\00:26:27.08 a traumatic experience that you went through, 00:26:27.12\00:26:29.45 Nancy. - Yes. I was so scared, so... It 00:26:29.52\00:26:35.02 took me months, actually, just praying and surrendering 00:26:35.12\00:26:37.39 to God, asking Him to please take away my 00:26:37.46\00:26:39.96 fears. I remember, as a child, praying many, 00:26:40.03\00:26:44.73 many times. "Lord, please take away my 00:26:44.83\00:26:46.50 fears. Take away my fears." The only way 00:26:46.53\00:26:49.34 that God can take away our fears sometimes is 00:26:49.40\00:26:52.04 by facing our fears. So, God took me to that 00:26:52.07\00:26:56.44 road, and I'm thankful that He did because 00:26:56.51\00:26:59.38 I have grown a lot since then. He has 00:26:59.41\00:27:02.35 made me to be able to trust in His 00:27:02.42\00:27:07.69 promises and realize that He's always faithful 00:27:07.76\00:27:10.46 to us - that if He calls us to do something 00:27:10.53\00:27:13.53 for Him, He will be with us no matter 00:27:13.60\00:27:15.76 what. - Amen. Now, what happened over there 00:27:15.80\00:27:18.93 where you guys... You kind of almost wanted 00:27:19.03\00:27:21.34 to leave at some point. Wasn't there a mosquito 00:27:21.44\00:27:24.01 incident or something? What was that about? 00:27:24.11\00:27:27.24 - Yes. So, it's an incredible, long process. We are 00:27:27.31\00:27:30.15 Adventist World Aviation, of course. We send 00:27:30.25\00:27:33.01 out missionaries-not just to Nicaragua, but 00:27:33.08\00:27:35.42 all over different countries-but we're 00:27:35.48\00:27:38.49 self-supported. So, it takes quite a while 00:27:38.52\00:27:40.86 to raise your funding. In my case, I had to 00:27:40.92\00:27:45.83 retrain significantly. We send out commercial 00:27:45.86\00:27:51.13 instrument-rated pilots, and I was a private 00:27:51.23\00:27:55.94 pilot that hadn't flown for 30 years, so... 00:27:56.07\00:27:58.54 [laughs] There was a lot of training to do. 00:27:58.67\00:28:01.28 So, you can imagine the long period of time 00:28:01.31\00:28:03.65 that we took to get ready. So we finally 00:28:03.71\00:28:06.88 arrive in Nicaragua, and we arrived about 00:28:06.95\00:28:12.42 this time of the year. It's still rainy season. 00:28:12.49\00:28:15.96 There's no electricity- well, we have some 00:28:16.02\00:28:19.23 solar power where we- at the time. When we 00:28:19.29\00:28:25.83 were sitting down in this house-you can 00:28:25.90\00:28:30.31 maybe pull up the picture of the house-somebody 00:28:30.41\00:28:34.94 today called it a "shack." Actually, you know 00:28:35.01\00:28:39.55 what- it's quite comfortable. We're 00:28:39.61\00:28:41.78 happy with it, but it has open windows. It 00:28:41.85\00:28:45.25 had open windows, so the mosquitos, are very 00:28:45.29\00:28:48.92 humid- they come right in, and it was not 00:28:48.99\00:28:53.23 long before we realized that this was going to 00:28:53.29\00:28:56.06 be a very, very difficult situation. 00:28:56.10\00:28:58.17 - So what did you do to remedy the situation? 00:28:58.23\00:29:00.17 - So what did you do, Nancy? You got on your 00:29:00.27\00:29:02.00 knees... - We began praying. We told no 00:29:02.07\00:29:04.37 one. We just began praying and saying, 00:29:04.44\00:29:06.34 "God, we are desperate. We need help, because 00:29:06.41\00:29:10.41 this is not working for us. If the only 00:29:10.48\00:29:13.98 place we can find refuge is under our 00:29:14.05\00:29:16.52 bed with the screens and all that, that's 00:29:18.45\00:29:21.19 not going to work for us," so we began to pray, and 00:29:21.26\00:29:24.63 God answered our prayer in a wonderful way. 00:29:24.69\00:29:27.70 - We have met many wonderful missionaries 00:29:29.60\00:29:32.83 in Nicaragua, and they're from all kinds 00:29:32.93\00:29:37.21 of different backgrounds, different organizations... 00:29:37.31\00:29:39.54 This is a picture of a group of people that 00:29:40.54\00:29:44.75 came. We met a pastor and he heard that we 00:29:44.81\00:29:49.52 didn't have screens on our windows. He says, 00:29:49.58\00:29:52.12 "That's impossible right now, because it's 00:29:52.19\00:29:54.02 malaria season! Malaria is spreading all over 00:29:54.12\00:29:58.49 the place. We're going to come out and visit 00:29:58.56\00:30:01.36 you." And I thought, "Okay... Let's see 00:30:01.40\00:30:04.43 what happens." Well, just a few days later, 00:30:04.50\00:30:06.53 he came and he brought another man with him. 00:30:06.60\00:30:10.94 They went around, they took notes, they did 00:30:10.97\00:30:12.67 everything... And within a week, they sent 00:30:12.74\00:30:15.28 that group out and they completely screened 00:30:15.34\00:30:19.48 our entire house. It went... There's 00:30:19.55\00:30:23.22 the screen. This huge veranda is a lot of 00:30:23.32\00:30:25.99 work, and all the eaves were open. There was 00:30:26.09\00:30:29.59 just no way to keep out the bugs. They 00:30:29.66\00:30:33.03 spent 3 days working, and they didn't charge 00:30:33.13\00:30:37.33 us anything. - Wow! So they volunteered 00:30:37.40\00:30:40.04 their time - 3 days! - God answered that 00:30:40.10\00:30:42.34 prayer in such a powerful way to let us know 00:30:42.44\00:30:45.17 that He wanted us to stay, 'cause it was just 00:30:45.24\00:30:49.74 a few weeks and everything. "How are we going to be 00:30:49.81\00:30:52.18 able to survive this?" So yeah. That was the 00:30:52.21\00:30:54.98 very first miracle that let us know that God 00:30:55.05\00:30:58.29 was with us. - That's an excellent point, 00:30:58.35\00:31:01.32 because where God leads, He provides. 00:31:01.42\00:31:03.46 So, He provided those missionaries to volunteer 00:31:03.53\00:31:07.23 their time for 3 days to screen in your 00:31:07.33\00:31:10.10 entire house. - Yeah. We're supposedly the 00:31:10.23\00:31:13.64 missionaries, but they ministered to us. It 00:31:13.74\00:31:16.44 was a powerful lesson. - What a blessing; 00:31:16.50\00:31:18.21 what a blessing. Now, I'm sure that when you 00:31:18.27\00:31:21.91 have an airplane and you're flying and all 00:31:21.98\00:31:25.55 of this stuff, you can run into maintenance 00:31:25.61\00:31:27.85 challenges and issues with that. Have you 00:31:27.95\00:31:31.19 ever received a flat tire or anything? - You 00:31:31.29\00:31:34.49 know, it's very uncommon to have flat tires 00:31:34.59\00:31:38.63 on airplanes. I've talked to many very experienced 00:31:38.73\00:31:41.06 pilots that have never have a flat tire on 00:31:41.13\00:31:44.07 their airplane. But of course, me being even 00:31:44.17\00:31:47.84 a new commercial pilot, that's exactly what happened 00:31:47.90\00:31:52.47 on one of my emergency flights. I got a call 00:31:52.54\00:31:55.28 early in the morning that there was a lady. She 00:31:55.34\00:31:59.95 was going to need to be transported to the 00:32:00.02\00:32:02.85 city so that she could have a cesarean section, 00:32:02.92\00:32:05.99 and it was urgent and if I could come. It was dark when they 00:32:06.05\00:32:09.32 called, so we got up early. We hurried 00:32:09.42\00:32:12.46 to get everything ready. I was waiting, 00:32:12.53\00:32:15.60 and they loaded this lady into the airplane, 00:32:15.66\00:32:17.93 and I was happy. I was just taxing-just turning 00:32:19.60\00:32:23.37 at the end of the runway. It's a gravel strip 00:32:23.44\00:32:25.34 to take off when I just felt this... 00:32:25.41\00:32:30.65 something different. I looked down at my 00:32:30.75\00:32:33.55 left main gear, and that tire was flat. So 00:32:33.62\00:32:37.82 here I was, just ready to take off 00:32:37.89\00:32:39.59 with this patient that desperately needed 00:32:39.65\00:32:42.79 to go, and- I wasn't even at our air base. I was 00:32:42.89\00:32:47.90 at another runway and I had no tools to deal 00:32:47.96\00:32:52.00 with that issue. It was traumatic. I told the 00:32:52.10\00:32:56.77 doctor, the lady that was there (we always 00:32:56.84\00:33:00.04 fly with either a nurse or a doctor; in this case, 00:33:00.11\00:33:01.94 a doctor was there). I said, "Please, call for an 00:33:02.04\00:33:05.78 ambulance, because we will not be able 00:33:05.88\00:33:08.92 to transport this patient. There's no 00:33:08.98\00:33:10.32 way we can fly." Of course, this is all happening 00:33:10.42\00:33:14.99 in Spanish, and my Spanish is not perfect. 00:33:15.06\00:33:17.86 She looked at me and she says, "No, this patient- 00:33:17.93\00:33:22.86 we're going to fly her to the hospital." - So 00:33:22.96\00:33:26.50 what did you- how did you- what did you do? 00:33:26.63\00:33:29.50 - I said, "Well, this plane cannot fly. It has a flat 00:33:29.60\00:33:34.48 tire." She looked at me and she says, 00:33:34.54\00:33:37.15 "This patient has to fly to the hospital. There's 00:33:38.41\00:33:42.35 no other way. She will not survive if you 00:33:42.42\00:33:46.52 don't fly her." So then, I understood 00:33:46.59\00:33:50.19 and I said, "Okay, let's pray." The three of us 00:33:50.29\00:33:54.53 in the airplane, we prayed, then I texted Nancy and 00:33:54.60\00:34:01.27 I didn't know where to begin. She remembered 00:34:01.37\00:34:06.14 that there was another missionary family, 00:34:06.21\00:34:08.54 again, from another organization, and she 00:34:08.58\00:34:11.38 said, "Give them a call." I did; I called 00:34:11.45\00:34:16.58 Brent. I gave him this long list of items 00:34:16.69\00:34:19.39 that I needed: tools and everything. I 00:34:19.45\00:34:21.96 knew he had a truck, so I gave him this 00:34:22.06\00:34:25.33 long list of things. It took a few minutes 00:34:25.43\00:34:28.90 longer than I thought it would to come, but 00:34:28.96\00:34:31.43 when he came, he was on a bicycle. He piled 00:34:31.53\00:34:34.44 it up with all this stuff. He truck was 00:34:34.50\00:34:36.17 not working. But together with him and another 00:34:36.24\00:34:40.54 mechanic that the doctor had called, we got the 00:34:40.58\00:34:43.68 tire off, we got the tube out, and got it 00:34:43.75\00:34:47.12 sent off to a little tire shop just down 00:34:47.22\00:34:49.75 the street. And within an hour, we were airborne 00:34:49.82\00:34:52.75 again. - So you were able to get the lady 00:34:52.82\00:34:55.32 to the hospital? - We successfully got her 00:34:55.42\00:34:57.79 to the hospital in time. - Nice, nice. Nancy, 00:34:57.86\00:35:01.70 what are some stories that you remember? 00:35:01.80\00:35:03.47 Maybe some miracle stories, or something 00:35:03.57\00:35:07.64 that took place during your time there in 00:35:07.70\00:35:10.94 Nicaragua. - Well, of course, I support 00:35:11.01\00:35:14.34 Norman when he has to go flying, but one 00:35:14.41\00:35:19.18 of the things that I do is pray with the 00:35:19.25\00:35:21.75 people. When they come to our house and they 00:35:21.82\00:35:26.19 need something, then I pray with them. I 00:35:26.25\00:35:29.89 remember this specific morning, I had gotten 00:35:29.99\00:35:34.73 up very early in the morning and had spent 00:35:34.80\00:35:36.56 quite a bit of time in prayer, asking 00:35:36.67\00:35:38.93 the Holy Spirit to lead me and guide me. 00:35:39.03\00:35:41.50 I remember this young man came to the door, 00:35:43.17\00:35:46.84 asking to buy nails. We actually sell 00:35:46.91\00:35:50.41 nails in our mission for half the price. We 00:35:50.45\00:35:54.72 buy them at full price and we sell them for 00:35:54.78\00:35:57.25 half price. - Oh, wow! So you lose money on 00:35:57.32\00:36:00.99 the deal. Okay! - Well, in a way, it's our 00:36:01.12\00:36:05.19 way to reach out to the community and be able 00:36:05.29\00:36:08.56 to have the opportunity to talk to the people 00:36:08.63\00:36:11.77 and get to know them. So, this morning, I 00:36:11.83\00:36:15.70 was impressed when I went up to get the change, 00:36:15.77\00:36:18.74 a voice told me- I believe the Holy Spirit 00:36:18.84\00:36:23.38 impressed me to pray for this man and said, 00:36:23.48\00:36:27.25 "Ask him if he needs prayer for anything." 00:36:27.32\00:36:29.88 So I went downstairs and I talked to him, 00:36:29.95\00:36:32.59 gave him the change, and I said, "Is there 00:36:32.65\00:36:34.36 something you would like me to pray for?" 00:36:34.42\00:36:36.66 He was hesitant. He looked down to the 00:36:36.73\00:36:39.86 ground; he didn't want to look into my 00:36:39.93\00:36:41.90 eye. But then after a while, he said, "Well, 00:36:41.96\00:36:44.90 actually, there's something I would like 00:36:46.17\00:36:47.54 you to pray for," he says. "Just this 00:36:47.60\00:36:51.14 morning, I received news that a curse has 00:36:51.17\00:36:54.74 been put on my life and I've been told 00:36:54.81\00:36:56.68 that I'm only going to live four years and 00:36:56.75\00:36:58.88 then I'm going to die." - Wow. - So I was 00:36:58.91\00:37:00.98 shocked when I heard this and I thought, 00:37:01.02\00:37:03.02 "Wow. It's amazing how the Holy Spirit 00:37:03.08\00:37:05.72 impressed me to ask him for this." So I 00:37:05.75\00:37:10.26 assured him that Jesus has power over darkness 00:37:10.36\00:37:14.40 and he had nothing to fear about, so I prayed 00:37:14.46\00:37:17.63 with him and he told me that he would like 00:37:17.70\00:37:20.54 to know more about Jesus. I'm looking 00:37:20.60\00:37:23.54 forward to going back and being able to finish 00:37:23.61\00:37:26.21 his story-how God will change the life of this 00:37:26.27\00:37:29.48 man. That's the kind of thing that God 00:37:29.54\00:37:33.38 does through us, and it's so wonderful to 00:37:33.42\00:37:35.68 be part of it. - Amen. What other stories 00:37:35.78\00:37:39.59 do you have? I know you have plenty of 00:37:39.65\00:37:41.42 stories, too. - I actually have more stories 00:37:41.52\00:37:44.19 than we have time for. There is another story 00:37:44.23\00:37:48.20 that I'd like to share. The air speed indicator 00:37:48.30\00:37:54.50 on an airplane is a very important instrument, 00:37:54.57\00:37:56.84 because you need that- especially if you're 00:37:56.94\00:37:58.84 flying in cloud. A bug or two or three had somehow 00:37:58.87\00:38:04.11 flown in or gotten into my air speed 00:38:05.65\00:38:07.58 indicator and it wasn't working anymore. I had 00:38:07.68\00:38:11.85 taken everything apart and was working on it 00:38:11.95\00:38:14.96 to fix it. I am not a mechanic, so we 00:38:15.02\00:38:20.40 have mechanics who help us, and they'll 00:38:20.46\00:38:23.03 come down if there's something serious. But 00:38:23.10\00:38:24.87 minor things like that, we work on ourselves. 00:38:24.93\00:38:27.97 I had just gotten to the point where 00:38:28.07\00:38:31.51 I was putting things back together and 00:38:31.57\00:38:34.11 I was actually in- I take the seats out and 00:38:34.24\00:38:37.18 I was in underneath the dash of the airplane, 00:38:37.28\00:38:39.51 putting the last tube together, and the thought 00:38:39.61\00:38:42.08 went through my mind, "Now how am I going 00:38:42.18\00:38:44.25 to test this thing? I really need to go for a 00:38:44.32\00:38:47.16 flight." When Nancy came running with the 00:38:47.22\00:38:50.33 phone, and she had a medical director 00:38:50.39\00:38:52.66 from one of the villages that we serve there. 00:38:52.73\00:38:56.23 He said, "I have a baby that was just 00:38:56.30\00:38:59.83 born, and if this baby doesn't get to neonatal 00:38:59.90\00:39:02.84 care in three hours, I think it's going 00:39:02.90\00:39:04.91 to die. Can you transport this baby?" So, no 00:39:04.97\00:39:09.84 pressure, right? - And it was a premature 00:39:09.91\00:39:12.31 baby. - It was a premature baby. So, 00:39:12.38\00:39:16.08 I said, "Okay, we will take the flight." 00:39:17.52\00:39:21.22 The whole family got together. We also have 00:39:21.96\00:39:25.19 a day worker who was there, and we rushed 00:39:25.26\00:39:28.26 to put the airplane back together. Everybody 00:39:28.33\00:39:30.83 helped and we got the plane together. Nancy 00:39:30.90\00:39:33.60 makes the calls for permissions (we have 00:39:33.67\00:39:35.80 to get permission for every flight with the 00:39:35.90\00:39:37.24 Nicaragua military). We got off and everything 00:39:37.31\00:39:42.74 worked perfectly, including the air 00:39:42.84\00:39:44.28 speed indicator, and we were successfully- 00:39:44.38\00:39:46.68 yeah. That baby survived. - Praise the Lord. 00:39:46.78\00:39:48.95 - Yeah. It's a very rewarding experience 00:39:49.02\00:39:51.72 to be able to do that. - Yes. - But I want to 00:39:51.82\00:39:54.19 say that we are supported by so many people, and 00:39:54.26\00:40:00.10 we get to do this amazing- it SEEMS 00:40:00.23\00:40:03.73 amazing. - It IS amazing! - We're 00:40:03.80\00:40:08.17 the ones that get to be the hands and feet 00:40:08.27\00:40:11.14 of Jesus, but it is not just us. There 00:40:11.21\00:40:14.74 are people- and Nancy- she has an amazing 00:40:14.84\00:40:17.01 prayer ministry that she also uses, and 00:40:17.08\00:40:21.28 she reaches out to others. Tell them about 00:40:21.35\00:40:22.85 how you do that. - Well, whenever my husband 00:40:22.92\00:40:26.82 goes on a flight, then I WhatsApp all our 00:40:26.92\00:40:30.99 team members in the prayer group, and 00:40:31.09\00:40:34.40 immediately, I get so excited when I see 00:40:34.46\00:40:37.40 the little blue lights being checked in, 00:40:37.50\00:40:39.73 knowing that they are receiving the message, 00:40:39.83\00:40:43.27 so we tell them what the situation is. If 00:40:43.34\00:40:46.57 they can please pray for him, and then we 00:40:46.68\00:40:49.61 also send them pictures of what is happening, 00:40:49.71\00:40:52.48 so they get to know what is happening 00:40:52.58\00:40:53.92 right at that moment and then how God 00:40:53.95\00:40:57.02 answers our prayers and blesses him. 00:40:57.99\00:41:00.46 Sometimes, there are situations that are 00:41:00.56\00:41:01.89 very difficult. Like the one day, you heard 00:41:01.92\00:41:04.03 of the flat tire. Our weather, sometimes, 00:41:04.13\00:41:07.26 is not good, so we depend on prayer all 00:41:07.36\00:41:10.37 the time. - Wow. And that's- see, that's 00:41:10.47\00:41:13.67 great, too, because people's faith...their 00:41:13.74\00:41:16.60 faith is being strengthened because you're also 00:41:16.67\00:41:19.57 showing how God's been answering the prayers, 00:41:19.61\00:41:22.18 so that's amazing, too. You guys had a powerful 00:41:22.28\00:41:25.51 story about a gentleman named- we'll call him 00:41:25.58\00:41:30.52 Rich. Okay? We'll call him Rich just so 00:41:30.62\00:41:33.22 we don't give his name. Tell us about that 00:41:33.29\00:41:36.26 story. - Yeah. Rich, he lives in the village. 00:41:36.36\00:41:42.26 We live right next to the village of La 00:41:42.36\00:41:45.33 Tranquera, which is a village about 300 00:41:45.43\00:41:47.90 people. One of the things we were able to do 00:41:47.97\00:41:51.11 last year, we hosted several mission 00:41:51.21\00:41:54.08 groups that came down. One of the groups 00:41:54.14\00:41:57.11 built a bridge. It's a footbridge that 00:41:57.25\00:42:01.25 links the area where we are to the village, 00:42:01.32\00:42:05.25 so it's an important bridge. - It's this 00:42:05.32\00:42:07.89 the Okinagwa? - Okanagan Christian Academy from 00:42:07.99\00:42:14.36 British Columbia in Canada. They came 00:42:14.46\00:42:18.40 down, and so we had a lot of work to do. 00:42:18.50\00:42:21.10 They worked hard. Of course, you saw the 00:42:21.20\00:42:23.20 finished bridge, but it was a lot of work, 00:42:23.30\00:42:26.37 and we invited, of course, any of the people from the 00:42:26.44\00:42:29.81 village to come and help. So Rich was 00:42:29.88\00:42:32.98 one of those that came, and he was a 00:42:33.05\00:42:34.98 hard worker. He worked for two or three days 00:42:35.08\00:42:37.72 with everybody really hard. Then the next 00:42:37.79\00:42:40.79 day, he didn't show up, and we didn't 00:42:40.86\00:42:44.33 know what happened. When Nancy inquired, 00:42:44.39\00:42:47.03 one of the other young fellows said that he 00:42:48.03\00:42:50.63 tried to take his life the night before. We 00:42:50.70\00:42:54.44 were shocked, because he's a very positive, 00:42:54.54\00:42:59.37 seemed happy, person on the exterior. So, 00:42:59.44\00:43:03.65 Nancy and I went over. Nancy went over and 00:43:04.98\00:43:06.98 she prayed with him. What did you give him? 00:43:07.05\00:43:09.78 You gave him some... - I gave him some 00:43:09.85\00:43:11.49 charcoal, because he had ingested an overdose 00:43:11.55\00:43:15.12 of sleeping pills, so his stomach was 00:43:15.22\00:43:18.49 hurting quite a bit. So, I ran home and 00:43:18.53\00:43:22.00 got him some charcoal and some juice and told 00:43:22.06\00:43:26.03 him to drink that throughout the day, 00:43:26.13\00:43:27.97 and I think that really helped him. So the 00:43:28.04\00:43:29.87 next day, he showed up to the mission field, 00:43:29.94\00:43:32.57 ready to work. - Wow! He was ready to work 00:43:33.27\00:43:35.28 the next day! - He was feeling much, much better. 00:43:35.34\00:43:37.15 - He probably shouldn't have been, but he 00:43:37.25\00:43:39.01 wanted to come. So since that time, Nancy 00:43:39.11\00:43:44.09 asked him if he wanted to have Bible studies, 00:43:44.15\00:43:46.69 and so she was able to carry on with those 00:43:46.76\00:43:49.89 studies till we left on our furlough. - Praise 00:43:49.96\00:43:53.33 the Lord. It sounds like he was in need of 00:43:53.40\00:43:56.73 the Lord. He sounds like a wonderful, 00:43:56.83\00:44:00.54 positive, upbeat person, but he was 00:44:00.60\00:44:03.17 struggling with some issues, and you guys 00:44:03.24\00:44:05.77 led him to the solution which is Christ. - The 00:44:05.84\00:44:08.38 people are very poor. There's subsistent 00:44:08.48\00:44:12.78 farming, there's really not jobs available 00:44:12.85\00:44:15.62 for them, so it's a challenging place 00:44:15.72\00:44:18.55 for them to live. We live right there near 00:44:18.65\00:44:22.02 the village with them, so we can... We want to 00:44:22.09\00:44:25.56 have a real positive impact in their lives. 00:44:25.63\00:44:28.53 - Yes...yes. Now, where do you- I 00:44:28.60\00:44:31.90 would imagine that plane takes a lot of gas. 00:44:31.97\00:44:34.30 So how do you fill up? What does that even 00:44:34.37\00:44:38.21 look like? How do you put gas in that plane? 00:44:38.27\00:44:41.84 We actually have a picture that we should just show. 00:44:41.91\00:44:44.48 - We just get it where you buy your auto fuel, 00:44:44.51\00:44:47.52 which is about a 4- or 5-hour drive. It's 00:44:47.62\00:44:52.32 the main city where we fly in with our patients. 00:44:52.39\00:44:55.02 So, when we fly our patients in, we usually 00:44:55.12\00:44:57.06 fuel up, but it involves either getting a taxi 00:44:57.16\00:45:00.16 or friends that we've made there to give us 00:45:01.43\00:45:04.70 a ride to the gas station and to fill up 00:45:04.73\00:45:07.24 jerrycans. - And it's not even jet fuel. 00:45:07.30\00:45:11.44 - No, it's not even out of gas; it's just 00:45:11.47\00:45:16.34 regular unleaded. - That's amazing. How much 00:45:16.41\00:45:20.98 gas does one of those planes take? - That one, 00:45:21.08\00:45:24.75 I think it'll hold 38 gallons, but it burns 00:45:24.85\00:45:30.53 about 7 gallons an hour, so if we have a 2-hour 00:45:30.63\00:45:35.13 flight, we'll be putting in 3 jerrycans to 00:45:35.23\00:45:40.04 keep us going. - Okay. And you also have a 00:45:40.14\00:45:43.10 truck, too, correct? - Yes. - And what do 00:45:43.14\00:45:46.78 you use this truck for primarily? - The 00:45:46.88\00:45:48.78 truck is used for everything. It's the 00:45:48.84\00:45:52.31 only vehicle within an hour's drive of 00:45:52.41\00:45:57.12 where we live, so it's used for emergency 00:45:57.22\00:46:01.09 transport of patients, as well. We use it to 00:46:01.16\00:46:04.89 buy our groceries, we use it for any 00:46:05.79\00:46:08.46 maintenance around the area. We have no tractor 00:46:08.53\00:46:10.93 or anything like that. We even haul sand and 00:46:10.97\00:46:15.37 gravel in it. Of course, we keep it 00:46:15.47\00:46:17.14 so that it's not too heavy. The truck is 00:46:17.21\00:46:20.84 very important; it keeps us safe. We 00:46:20.94\00:46:23.08 don't drive at night, because we want to 00:46:23.18\00:46:24.75 avoid issues and problems. The truck is 00:46:24.81\00:46:27.95 getting a little bit tired, so there's 00:46:28.02\00:46:29.98 a project now to replace our truck here. It's 00:46:30.05\00:46:32.92 getting maintained right now. - There are 00:46:32.99\00:46:35.56 also times when we transport people if 00:46:35.62\00:46:38.43 the plane, for some reason, cannot fly or 00:46:38.53\00:46:41.36 it's nighttime, sometimes we receive emergency 00:46:41.43\00:46:45.33 calls, so we will transport them, as 00:46:45.37\00:46:48.10 well, to the nearest hospital. - And I 00:46:48.14\00:46:51.31 know that you're trying to fix the truck-you 00:46:51.37\00:46:54.98 said you had a project for that-roughly, about 00:46:55.04\00:46:57.55 how much do you think it will take to fix the 00:46:57.61\00:47:00.45 truck? - Well, actually, replace the truck. - Oh, 00:47:00.52\00:47:04.82 replace the truck. Okay. - We're going to 00:47:04.89\00:47:06.65 replace it, or at least have a more 00:47:06.72\00:47:09.16 reliable one and keep that as a second 00:47:09.26\00:47:11.16 vehicle. The project- it's difficult to get 00:47:11.23\00:47:16.30 good used vehicles, sometimes, because the 00:47:17.93\00:47:22.74 roads are very, very rough. It's difficult 00:47:22.80\00:47:25.91 to drive more than- we use kilometers 00:47:26.01\00:47:28.94 down there-25, 30, 40 kilometers an hour 00:47:29.01\00:47:31.91 because it's so rough, so it's just constantly 00:47:31.98\00:47:33.82 hard on the vehicle. We're looking for a 00:47:35.15\00:47:37.42 Toyota Land Cruiser this time, which is 00:47:37.49\00:47:40.72 a very rugged version of a vehicle. It's 00:47:40.76\00:47:44.73 about a-trying to remember the numbers 00:47:44.79\00:47:47.33 quickly-I think it's about a $35,000 00:47:47.40\00:47:52.17 vehicle, but we have 00:47:52.23\00:47:54.80 already. - Oh, praise the Lord. - God has been 00:47:54.90\00:47:57.27 good. We're well on our way with that 00:47:57.34\00:48:00.18 project. - Nice. And what are some of the 00:48:00.24\00:48:02.34 other needs that AWA needs? - Well, the 00:48:02.41\00:48:07.82 house that we live in, you saw the picture 00:48:07.88\00:48:09.45 of the house. That roof is becoming quite 00:48:09.48\00:48:12.09 rusted, and we noticed just before we're 00:48:12.19\00:48:15.36 leaving, there's drips all over the place, so 00:48:15.42\00:48:17.53 our plan is to replace the roof. The floor is 00:48:17.59\00:48:22.86 just rough concrete, and it really hard to 00:48:22.93\00:48:26.20 keep it clean and nice, so we're going to put 00:48:26.27\00:48:28.84 some tiling, flooring in. That'll really 00:48:28.94\00:48:31.64 make things easier for Nancy, as well. Let's 00:48:31.71\00:48:35.78 see... Other projects. - What about volunteers? 00:48:35.84\00:48:40.25 - Yes. We always need volunteers. Not just 00:48:40.35\00:48:45.12 volunteers, but even career missionaries 00:48:45.22\00:48:47.66 that would love to come; pilots. Our project, 00:48:47.72\00:48:51.16 really, could handle three families. We 00:48:51.23\00:48:54.90 would like to see three families; maybe another 00:48:54.96\00:48:57.07 pilot, and then another family that 00:48:57.17\00:49:01.50 would just do mission work in the region. 00:49:01.57\00:49:03.10 There's a lot of work. Of course, that would 00:49:04.17\00:49:05.87 involve more housing and things, so that's 00:49:05.94\00:49:08.21 a big goal, but that's kind of our- Adventist 00:49:08.28\00:49:12.51 World Aviation likes to have two or three 00:49:12.58\00:49:14.98 families in the region because they can 00:49:15.08\00:49:16.75 support each other. We can't be there all the 00:49:16.79\00:49:19.39 time. So like right now, we're not there, 00:49:19.45\00:49:21.66 so there's nobody providing any of these 00:49:21.72\00:49:24.33 services right now, which can affect many 00:49:24.39\00:49:27.36 lives. - Yes, yes. Well, you guys are 00:49:27.46\00:49:30.00 doing an amazing work, and as I said earlier, 00:49:30.07\00:49:34.34 this is truly a matter of life and death in 00:49:34.40\00:49:36.47 some cases. That cesarean section. 00:49:36.54\00:49:39.97 If you guys wouldn't have made it to the 00:49:40.04\00:49:41.78 hospital, that lady AND that baby might 00:49:41.84\00:49:45.28 not have made it. - Yeah. And the other thing to 00:49:45.35\00:49:47.62 realize is that the families are very 00:49:47.65\00:49:49.48 large, so every mother that we can save, 00:49:49.55\00:49:53.29 make sure that there's many, many less orphans. 00:49:55.39\00:49:58.69 Otherwise, they lose their mothers. So, it's 00:49:58.79\00:50:02.53 really an important service. - Now, if people 00:50:02.63\00:50:05.33 want to check out some of the other stories, 00:50:05.40\00:50:08.50 our time is escaping us. It's gone by so fast. 00:50:08.60\00:50:12.57 If people want to check out some of your other 00:50:12.67\00:50:14.68 stories, what would be a website for them 00:50:14.78\00:50:16.91 to go to? - Well, I'm going to recommend two 00:50:16.98\00:50:18.91 websites. Of course, our main website for 00:50:19.01\00:50:22.42 Adventist World Aviation is FlyAwa.org, but if 00:50:22.48\00:50:28.66 you want to follow our story personally... There's 00:50:28.72\00:50:31.26 lots of missionaries on that website that 00:50:31.33\00:50:32.76 you can look at, and they all have amazing 00:50:32.86\00:50:35.60 stories to tell-just like us. But if you 00:50:35.66\00:50:38.83 want to follow our story, you can go to 00:50:38.90\00:50:40.44 NormHansen.com, and you can subscribe 00:50:40.50\00:50:47.28 to our newsletter. We try to put that 00:50:47.34\00:50:48.94 out once a month. - Nice, nice. What did 00:50:48.98\00:50:51.95 your friends think, Steven, when you were 00:50:52.01\00:50:56.95 telling them you were gonna go be a missionary? 00:50:57.02\00:51:00.12 - Well, I think they thought it sounded 00:51:00.79\00:51:02.69 exciting, because it does sound like an 00:51:02.72\00:51:05.96 exciting idea, going out there, doing mission 00:51:06.06\00:51:09.43 work. It was hard; it's true. Saying goodbye 00:51:09.50\00:51:12.43 to our pets, our friends, our family, 00:51:12.50\00:51:15.07 but it's been a really good experience, and 00:51:17.47\00:51:19.97 I'm just exciting to be hastening Jesus' 00:51:20.08\00:51:23.24 coming. - Amen. Amen. It's a blessing to see 00:51:23.35\00:51:28.75 you guys working together as a unit. 00:51:28.82\00:51:31.45 I want people to know how to get in contact 00:51:31.52\00:51:33.99 with you. I want people to know how 00:51:34.06\00:51:37.06 they can support you, so we're going to go 00:51:37.13\00:51:39.09 to the address roll so they can do that. 00:51:39.16\00:51:42.00 - Adventist World Aviation supports isolated communities 00:51:44.27\00:51:47.70 and medical evacuations, vaccinations, clinics, 00:51:47.80\00:51:51.17 dental outreach, lifestyle programs, as well as 00:51:51.24\00:51:54.38 church planting and Bible studies. They are always 00:51:54.44\00:51:57.68 in need of more planes, volunteers, and medical 00:51:57.78\00:52:00.78 supplies. If you would like to support missionaries 00:52:00.88\00:52:03.69 like the Hansen family, please visit FlyAwa.org 00:52:03.75\00:52:07.62 for more information.
