How do you express this?" 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.02 And they will think that was funny, you know, 00:03:07.05\00:03:08.95 but I started learning little by little like that. 00:03:08.98\00:03:11.62 And when I got invited to come to America to study, 00:03:11.65\00:03:15.29 I took a 28 day course in English. 00:03:15.32\00:03:18.76 That was it. 00:03:18.79\00:03:20.20 And I came, I went straight into college 00:03:20.30\00:03:22.76 and I got 8 As, 1 B and 1 C in my first quarter. 00:03:22.80\00:03:27.40 It was tough. 00:03:27.44\00:03:28.77 That's amazing. 00:03:28.80\00:03:30.14 What we'd like to do, we always have music, 00:03:30.17\00:03:32.94 we know how you love music. 00:03:32.97\00:03:35.04 So I'm gonna cut you loose for just a minute 00:03:35.08\00:03:37.41 and we are going to have Dr. Torres play for us, 00:03:37.45\00:03:41.75 so that you can see and witness the gift 00:03:41.78\00:03:46.55 that God has given him. 00:03:46.59\00:03:49.09 He is an incredible musician. 00:03:49.12\00:03:52.19 And he is now going to play for us 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.13 with our very own ET Everett 00:03:54.20\00:03:56.70 will be accompanying him on the piano, 00:03:56.73\00:03:59.07 but he will play, "Amazing Grace." 00:03:59.10\00:04:01.70 Isn't that beautiful? 00:06:40.90\00:06:42.20 You know, the Bible says, 00:06:42.23\00:06:43.73 actually these are the words of the Lord in Jeremiah 29:11. 00:06:43.83\00:06:47.84 He says, "I know the thoughts that I have for you, ' 00:06:47.87\00:06:51.21 says the Lord, 00:06:51.24\00:06:52.57 'thoughts of peace 00:06:52.61\00:06:53.94 and not of evil to give you a future, and a hope.' " 00:06:54.04\00:06:59.25 And we certainly sometimes think 00:06:59.28\00:07:01.85 that we know what we would like to do, 00:07:01.88\00:07:04.92 but God pulls us along. 00:07:04.95\00:07:08.26 And when we stay in the center of His will, 00:07:08.29\00:07:10.56 it is amazing 00:07:10.59\00:07:12.43 how God leads us on a path 00:07:12.46\00:07:15.90 that is so much greater than what we thought. 00:07:15.93\00:07:19.37 Dr. Torres? Yes. 00:07:19.40\00:07:21.40 You told me I can call you Paulo 00:07:21.44\00:07:23.17 if I say it, right? 00:07:23.20\00:07:25.81 Tell us just a little bit 00:07:25.84\00:07:27.74 what it was like 00:07:27.78\00:07:29.11 as a boy growing up in Brazil? 00:07:29.14\00:07:32.65 We lived in the country. 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.18 And my father had absolutely almost every animal and bird 00:07:35.22\00:07:39.35 you can imagine. 00:07:39.39\00:07:41.02 So growing in nature, 00:07:41.06\00:07:43.22 in midst of all of the God's creation 00:07:43.26\00:07:46.43 was so wonderful 00:07:46.46\00:07:47.83 that inspired me very young age 00:07:47.86\00:07:50.73 to be a servant to the Lord. 00:07:50.83\00:07:53.10 I want to be a prophet. 00:07:53.13\00:07:54.47 So you were in a Christian family? 00:07:54.50\00:07:55.84 Yes, my family was Seventh-day Adventist, 00:07:55.87\00:07:59.74 since my birth. 00:07:59.77\00:08:01.41 And I had this great aspiration of serving the Lord. 00:08:01.44\00:08:07.25 Not only as a pastor, I want to be a prophet, 00:08:07.28\00:08:09.55 I want to have visions, I want... 00:08:09.58\00:08:11.39 So I would go outside with my Bible, 00:08:11.42\00:08:14.39 and I would sit down on the grass, 00:08:14.42\00:08:17.16 lay down, look at the sky. 00:08:17.19\00:08:18.76 My dream was to have glass cover 00:08:18.79\00:08:23.77 that I could spend all night looking at the stars. 00:08:23.80\00:08:26.43 And during the day I would read the Bible, 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.14 and I'd pray to the Lord. 00:08:28.17\00:08:30.31 And that was a beautiful moment in my life. 00:08:30.34\00:08:33.48 I really 00:08:33.51\00:08:34.98 have fantastic memories about that. 00:08:35.01\00:08:37.65 I have three sisters, 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.72 and they would be very musical practicing. 00:08:40.75\00:08:44.89 And so I was also surrounded by music, 00:08:44.92\00:08:48.52 and by nature, and it was great. 00:08:48.56\00:08:50.83 God gave me a great blessing. 00:08:50.93\00:08:52.86 That is wonderful. 00:08:52.89\00:08:54.30 Now, you grew up in a musical family, 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.23 a Christian family. 00:08:56.26\00:08:57.87 I believe you told me 00:08:57.90\00:08:59.23 that everybody played the piano. 00:08:59.27\00:09:00.77 How did you choose the violin? 00:09:00.87\00:09:05.34 For two reasons. 00:09:05.37\00:09:06.71 First of all, I couldn't withstand 00:09:06.81\00:09:08.14 hearing piano any longer. 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.18 Every sister would practice three hours of scales... 00:09:10.21\00:09:14.62 And then the next... 00:09:14.65\00:09:16.72 When the third one was almost finished, I said, 00:09:16.75\00:09:18.42 "I can't stand piano any longer. 00:09:18.45\00:09:19.82 Mom, give me another instrument." 00:09:19.85\00:09:22.22 And right then we lived by a college, 00:09:22.26\00:09:24.36 by Seventh-day Adventist college, 00:09:24.39\00:09:26.49 which was called Institute Adventist 00:09:26.53\00:09:28.73 the Paranaense. 00:09:28.76\00:09:30.37 That is, 00:09:30.47\00:09:33.94 it was the college that was very close to my home 00:09:34.04\00:09:37.84 and they were high on teachers to bring music into the school. 00:09:37.87\00:09:43.45 And came my violin teacher 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.25 and they said, "Look, Catalina, " 00:09:46.28\00:09:48.32 my mom, 00:09:48.35\00:09:49.68 "would you like your son to study violin? 00:09:49.72\00:09:51.55 We have a new teacher." 00:09:51.59\00:09:52.92 And she says, "Yes, I think we will have him doing that." 00:09:52.95\00:09:56.06 So I went and I play for him, and he started teaching me. 00:09:56.09\00:10:00.50 In three months, 00:10:00.53\00:10:01.90 I auditioned for the school of music 00:10:01.93\00:10:03.43 and fine arts in the city. 00:10:03.47\00:10:05.80 And I was accepted in as a student 00:10:05.83\00:10:10.97 because you have to go through a selection 00:10:11.01\00:10:13.44 to be student there. 00:10:13.54\00:10:15.41 And that was came out very fast. 00:10:15.44\00:10:18.88 But thanks to my mom, she was very disciplined. 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.78 And when I would stop practicing 00:10:21.82\00:10:23.45 for about 15 minutes 00:10:23.49\00:10:24.82 she would say, "Paulo, why did you stop?" 00:10:24.85\00:10:27.42 I said, "I've learned lesson." 00:10:27.46\00:10:29.29 She says, "No, you got to do it again." 00:10:29.32\00:10:31.86 So I would practice another 15 minutes. 00:10:31.89\00:10:34.73 And she would say, "You stopped? 00:10:34.76\00:10:36.60 Why? 00:10:36.63\00:10:37.97 You should continue." 00:10:38.00\00:10:39.33 "Mom, I have learned the lesson." 00:10:39.37\00:10:40.70 "Well, learn next lesson. 00:10:40.74\00:10:42.07 So when the teacher, you come to your class, 00:10:42.10\00:10:44.24 you'll have even more." 00:10:44.27\00:10:45.61 So she insisted on that. 00:10:45.64\00:10:47.51 And that was very good 00:10:47.54\00:10:48.88 because in three years of violin, 00:10:48.91\00:10:50.88 when people usually scratch and still, 00:10:50.91\00:10:54.15 I was concert master of small orchestra 00:10:54.25\00:10:57.42 in the big city. 00:10:57.45\00:10:59.12 And with five years of violin practicing, 00:10:59.15\00:11:01.79 I was the concert master 00:11:01.82\00:11:03.53 of one of the most famous international music festivals 00:11:03.56\00:11:07.40 in Brazil encompass de Janeiro and Sao Paulo. 00:11:07.50\00:11:10.13 And that's when I was invited to come to America. 00:11:10.17\00:11:13.13 So take us through your schooling 00:11:13.17\00:11:16.47 and we want... 00:11:16.50\00:11:18.24 He's going to play several hymns 00:11:18.27\00:11:20.74 for us today. 00:11:20.84\00:11:22.18 But we just wanted to get one classical piece in there. 00:11:22.21\00:11:26.01 You came to the United States to get your masters at Andrews? 00:11:26.05\00:11:30.95 Correct. 00:11:30.99\00:11:32.32 But before that, 00:11:32.35\00:11:33.72 I came to get my college degree. 00:11:33.76\00:11:35.19 Oh, you came here for your college degree, okay. 00:11:35.22\00:11:36.56 Yeah, I came from my college 00:11:36.59\00:11:38.63 and the conductor that offer, I had several invitations. 00:11:38.66\00:11:43.13 But Dr. James Wattenbarger 00:11:43.16\00:11:45.57 from Tennessee Technological University said, 00:11:45.60\00:11:48.77 "Paulo, if you come to my university, 00:11:48.80\00:11:51.51 you'll help us a lot with all your knowledge, 00:11:51.54\00:11:54.48 your music playing, 00:11:54.51\00:11:56.08 and we'll give you full tuition and fees, 00:11:56.11\00:11:58.45 we'll let you live in a fraternity house, 00:11:58.48\00:12:01.12 cost free. 00:12:01.15\00:12:02.58 And you will audition to the symphony orchestra." 00:12:02.62\00:12:04.52 And I did audition 00:12:04.55\00:12:06.22 for Nashville Symphony Orchestra. 00:12:06.25\00:12:08.39 And I did some recording in the studios 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.93 in Nashville. 00:12:10.96\00:12:12.29 I also played at Grand Ole Opry House. 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.20 And it was a way of sustaining me 00:12:14.30\00:12:17.63 because my parents didn't have financial ways, 00:12:17.67\00:12:21.70 means of maintaining me here. 00:12:21.74\00:12:23.37 Well, I'll bet 00:12:23.47\00:12:24.81 that the English you had practice 00:12:24.84\00:12:26.37 sounded very different in Tennessee. 00:12:26.41\00:12:29.78 It did. 00:12:29.81\00:12:31.15 So you went then to Andrews for your masters. 00:12:31.18\00:12:34.35 Where did you get your doctorate? 00:12:34.38\00:12:36.42 Okay. 00:12:36.45\00:12:37.79 Because close to Andrews we have Michigan State. 00:12:37.82\00:12:40.32 Yes. 00:12:40.42\00:12:41.76 So what I was doing is, 00:12:41.79\00:12:43.26 I had a scholarship for only two years 00:12:43.29\00:12:45.26 from the Brazilian government. 00:12:45.29\00:12:47.46 So I started taking doctoral courses 00:12:47.50\00:12:51.40 at the same time I was doing my masters. 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.17 And I was sending to Brazil, 00:12:54.20\00:12:56.27 the fees and they accepted and they were paying for it. 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.11 So when the two years had finished, 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.14 I was already on my doctoral. 00:13:01.18\00:13:03.08 I had finished Andrews 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.85 and I asked for an extension of two more years, 00:13:04.88\00:13:07.75 and I was able to 00:13:07.78\00:13:09.32 then finish my doctoral in only two years 00:13:09.35\00:13:11.69 at Michigan State. 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.46 And more than that I wanted to take classes 00:13:13.49\00:13:16.22 with the best teachers at the moment 00:13:16.26\00:13:18.29 and conducting was Gustav Meier, great name. 00:13:18.33\00:13:21.46 Yes. 00:13:21.50\00:13:22.83 And I studied with him 00:13:22.86\00:13:24.23 at Ann Arbor University of Michigan. 00:13:24.27\00:13:26.07 And with Nelli Shkolnikova, 00:13:26.10\00:13:27.84 I took classes at Indiana, Bloomington. 00:13:27.87\00:13:30.67 So I would commute every week to Ann Arbor 00:13:30.77\00:13:33.44 and all the way down to Bloomington 00:13:33.54\00:13:36.48 that was almost six hours going and come back of trip. 00:13:36.51\00:13:40.18 And, but it was very worth it. 00:13:40.22\00:13:43.65 Yes. Certainly worth it. 00:13:43.69\00:13:45.02 Well, before then we go further, 00:13:45.05\00:13:46.72 we want to have him do one classical piece for us. 00:13:46.82\00:13:50.69 And this is something you will probably recognize 00:13:50.73\00:13:56.06 and it is a piece called "Meditation." 00:13:56.10\00:13:58.43 Well, that was Dr. Paulo Torres playing, 00:18:32.47\00:18:35.68 being accompanied by Dr. Vernon Gordon. 00:18:35.71\00:18:40.12 And Dr. Gordon is actually classically trained 00:18:40.22\00:18:43.79 as a pianist, 00:18:43.89\00:18:45.22 but he is a dentist 00:18:45.25\00:18:47.16 and he goes to the Palm Coast Church 00:18:47.26\00:18:50.73 with Paulo. 00:18:50.76\00:18:52.09 Correct. 00:18:52.13\00:18:53.46 And so we're so glad he came up here. 00:18:53.50\00:18:54.83 It was really lovely to have him here. 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.73 You've actually started a program 00:18:56.83\00:18:59.13 that's kind of interesting at your church in Palm Coast? 00:18:59.17\00:19:02.97 Yes, I convinced the pastor, 00:19:03.00\00:19:04.94 well, it wasn't hard to convince him. 00:19:04.97\00:19:06.51 He wanted something special with music. 00:19:06.54\00:19:09.84 And I started an orchestra, a string orchestra. 00:19:09.88\00:19:14.55 And what we did is we invited all the parents 00:19:14.58\00:19:18.32 to bring their children who are interested in music. 00:19:18.35\00:19:21.36 They never play... 00:19:21.39\00:19:22.72 Most of them never played an instrument. 00:19:22.76\00:19:24.93 And we rented instruments for them. 00:19:24.96\00:19:28.30 And then the parents came, we had a meeting, 00:19:28.33\00:19:30.77 and I said, "But there's one thing 00:19:30.87\00:19:32.77 I would like you to do. 00:19:32.80\00:19:34.50 I would like one of the parents at least, 00:19:34.54\00:19:36.81 to play in the orchestra with their child, 00:19:36.84\00:19:40.18 because that will help the child, 00:19:40.21\00:19:42.41 you will stimulate the child and also, 00:19:42.44\00:19:44.75 it will clear all the doubts 00:19:44.78\00:19:46.11 because an adult will learn faster. 00:19:46.15\00:19:48.55 And when you get home the child will ask, 00:19:48.58\00:19:50.49 "Mom, Daddy, how do you hold instrument? 00:19:50.59\00:19:53.02 And mom and daddy may say, "I don't know. 00:19:53.05\00:19:54.59 Ask next week." 00:19:54.62\00:19:55.96 So that way, the parents right there, 00:19:55.99\00:19:57.86 and it's we had an amazing result 00:19:57.89\00:20:00.20 in 30 hours of rehearsing, 00:20:00.30\00:20:02.96 we gave our first concert playing only hymns 00:20:03.00\00:20:05.90 at the church with 35 member orchestra. 00:20:05.93\00:20:09.34 Praise the Lord! 00:20:09.37\00:20:10.77 And you know something that I'm convinced 00:20:10.81\00:20:13.64 that when children learn an instrument 00:20:13.68\00:20:15.84 and learn music ministry, 00:20:15.88\00:20:18.01 it really solidifies them 00:20:18.05\00:20:20.88 as far as their attraction, 00:20:20.92\00:20:22.95 their bond to the church. 00:20:22.98\00:20:24.49 I think there's something very special about music. 00:20:24.52\00:20:27.32 Now, you have been on television how many times? 00:20:27.36\00:20:32.03 Do you have any idea as a conductor and a violinist? 00:20:32.06\00:20:34.86 Hundreds of times. 00:20:34.93\00:20:36.46 Hundreds of times... Just, yeah. 00:20:36.50\00:20:39.30 You have recorded over 10,000 tracks. 00:20:39.33\00:20:43.34 My question to you though, 00:20:43.37\00:20:45.61 is as a violinist, 00:20:45.64\00:20:49.98 as a conductor, 00:20:50.08\00:20:51.95 as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian, 00:20:51.98\00:20:54.58 how did you work this? 00:20:54.62\00:20:56.05 I mean, how did you honor the Sabbath? 00:20:56.08\00:20:59.89 Because quite often, 00:21:00.06\00:21:02.36 the Sabbath is an issue for when we're having concerts? 00:21:02.39\00:21:06.80 Correct. You're absolutely right. 00:21:06.90\00:21:09.53 At the moment, 00:21:09.56\00:21:10.93 we have in some of our colleges, 00:21:10.97\00:21:13.40 Seventh-day Adventist college, 00:21:13.44\00:21:15.14 we do have some orchestras, 00:21:15.17\00:21:17.27 but professional big orchestras in Brazil. 00:21:17.31\00:21:20.44 I think I was the only Seventh-day Adventist 00:21:20.54\00:21:24.21 in the orchestras in Brazil, 00:21:24.25\00:21:26.98 professionally playing and keeping the Sabbath. 00:21:27.02\00:21:30.15 And that brought several... 00:21:30.19\00:21:32.45 Challenges. Challenges. 00:21:32.49\00:21:34.69 Some of them naturally, 00:21:34.72\00:21:36.09 I had to renounce not accept invitations 00:21:36.12\00:21:39.76 because they were immovable, 00:21:39.79\00:21:42.16 they cannot negotiate, 00:21:42.20\00:21:44.33 but many others, 00:21:44.37\00:21:46.47 I was able to negotiate with God's grace. 00:21:46.50\00:21:49.37 God opened the doors, 00:21:49.40\00:21:51.24 and I was able to testify with my beliefs 00:21:51.27\00:21:56.28 on the Sabbath. 00:21:56.31\00:21:57.68 And I think my colleagues 00:21:57.71\00:22:02.02 will remember forever this situation 00:22:02.05\00:22:05.69 and that which were presented in a dress rehearsal 00:22:05.72\00:22:09.59 with a guest conductor, 00:22:09.62\00:22:11.56 being there in my chair as principal violinist 00:22:11.59\00:22:15.66 being emptied during the Sabbath. 00:22:15.70\00:22:18.50 And 00:22:18.53\00:22:21.24 people sometimes get angry 00:22:21.27\00:22:24.97 because others have certain things 00:22:25.01\00:22:26.84 that they don't and they were not allowed 00:22:26.88\00:22:29.54 to miss any rehearsals. 00:22:29.58\00:22:31.21 But I was because when I auditioned 00:22:31.25\00:22:34.42 to this Parana State Symphony Orchestra, 00:22:34.45\00:22:36.65 I told them I was the Seventh-day Adventist. 00:22:36.69\00:22:38.72 And I would keep my Sabbath. 00:22:38.75\00:22:40.12 Then they said, "Now we want to hire you. 00:22:40.16\00:22:41.49 You're definitely the best musician, 00:22:41.52\00:22:43.79 we know in the auditions, 00:22:43.83\00:22:45.93 you can come, we will give you the Sabbath." 00:22:45.96\00:22:48.63 And that created a certain deficient 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.40 in the orchestra 00:22:50.43\00:22:51.77 because they couldn't miss a rehearsal, 00:22:51.80\00:22:53.13 I would miss the most important of reversals. 00:22:53.17\00:22:55.54 So after a couple of years working there, 00:22:55.57\00:22:59.27 I was sued by the theater I worked for 00:22:59.31\00:23:04.51 because of keeping the Sabbath. 00:23:04.55\00:23:06.92 And three lawyers from the state 00:23:07.02\00:23:09.52 were called to decide in my case, 00:23:09.55\00:23:12.09 and they interviewed 30 witnesses, 00:23:12.12\00:23:15.52 including conductors, guest conductors. 00:23:15.56\00:23:18.09 And they all testify 00:23:18.13\00:23:19.46 that I was faithful to my church, 00:23:19.49\00:23:21.06 I was faithful to the orchestra. 00:23:21.10\00:23:22.96 And I had a moral agreement 00:23:23.00\00:23:25.43 when I first came into the orchestra, 00:23:25.47\00:23:27.90 so that should be respected. 00:23:27.94\00:23:29.97 And I won the case. 00:23:30.01\00:23:32.27 And many other situations happened like that. 00:23:32.31\00:23:36.28 Invitations, 00:23:36.31\00:23:37.71 very important invitations, 00:23:37.75\00:23:39.08 like I conducted 00:23:39.11\00:23:40.92 the rehearsals for all the tenors 00:23:40.95\00:23:43.75 of Andrea Bocelli in Brazil, 00:23:43.79\00:23:45.99 he is a very famous tenor singer. 00:23:46.02\00:23:48.66 And one of the dress rehearsals was on the Sabbath hour. 00:23:48.69\00:23:53.36 And I told his production 00:23:53.40\00:23:55.10 that I could not rehearse until 6 o'clock, 00:23:55.13\00:23:57.87 which was the sundown that night. 00:23:57.90\00:24:00.84 And we had 150 people on the stage. 00:24:00.87\00:24:04.31 And they went and talk to production 00:24:04.34\00:24:05.71 and they said, well, 00:24:05.74\00:24:08.81 Master Paulo Torres said, 00:24:08.84\00:24:10.65 "He's a Sabbath keeper, 00:24:10.68\00:24:13.01 and he will not start until 6 o'clock. 00:24:13.05\00:24:15.38 So what do we do?" 00:24:15.42\00:24:17.59 And they said, "Well, let's wait for that. 00:24:17.62\00:24:19.65 Let's respect." 00:24:19.69\00:24:21.09 And it was... 00:24:21.12\00:24:22.92 The time is money in those situations. 00:24:22.96\00:24:24.93 Well, they had 15,000 people waiting to see the show, 00:24:24.96\00:24:27.96 several soloists, 150 people in the stage, 00:24:27.96\00:24:31.10 and they waited until sundown. 00:24:31.13\00:24:32.47 Praise God! Yeah. 00:24:32.50\00:24:34.00 Isn't that amazing, 00:24:34.04\00:24:35.80 when you honor God and put Him first, 00:24:35.84\00:24:39.81 how God honors you? 00:24:39.84\00:24:41.94 Yeah. 00:24:41.98\00:24:44.38 It is something we're going to ask you, 00:24:44.41\00:24:46.31 if you will to grab your violin again. 00:24:46.35\00:24:48.45 Okay. 00:24:48.48\00:24:49.82 And we'll have him play, "Holy, holy, holy." 00:24:49.85\00:24:53.05 This is something that only God can make a day holy, 00:24:53.09\00:24:59.23 and He did make the Sabbath holy 00:24:59.26\00:25:02.56 and when we honor His holy day, He honors us. 00:25:02.60\00:25:07.24 Oh, amen. 00:28:05.65\00:28:07.05 That was one of those two hander's 00:28:07.08\00:28:08.72 and mama's take heart. 00:28:08.75\00:28:11.22 You see that Dr. Paulo Torres again 00:28:11.25\00:28:13.89 he was accompanied by Dr. Vernon Gordon on that. 00:28:13.92\00:28:17.36 But his mama had him practice 00:28:17.39\00:28:20.23 more than just to learn the song, 00:28:20.26\00:28:21.83 but the next lesson as well. 00:28:21.86\00:28:23.97 So when you're listening to the scratching, 00:28:24.00\00:28:26.57 take heart and keep your children 00:28:26.60\00:28:29.27 focused on the prize 00:28:29.30\00:28:31.11 because certainly 00:28:31.14\00:28:32.47 God can use it for His glory. 00:28:32.51\00:28:35.91 Thank you so much for that beautiful song, Paulo. 00:28:35.94\00:28:39.45 Praise the Lord. 00:28:39.48\00:28:40.92 You arrived in the States in 2016. 00:28:40.95\00:28:44.32 But I want to go back 00:28:44.35\00:28:45.69 because I know you brought a video. 00:28:45.72\00:28:47.06 So let's go back to Brazil. 00:28:47.16\00:28:49.36 You've had an amazing professional career 00:28:49.39\00:28:53.50 as a violinist and the conductor. 00:28:53.53\00:28:56.53 But you always want to give back to the Lord 00:28:56.63\00:29:00.47 because the little boy who prayed to be a prophet 00:29:00.50\00:29:04.24 is actually become a prophetic... 00:29:04.27\00:29:09.84 Deliverer of prophetic messages in music, 00:29:09.88\00:29:12.51 let me put it that way. 00:29:12.55\00:29:14.05 Tell us about what you were doing 00:29:14.08\00:29:15.85 in the hospitals there in Brazil? 00:29:15.88\00:29:18.15 It all started 00:29:18.19\00:29:19.52 when I was visiting an aunt of mine. 00:29:19.55\00:29:23.12 And she was ill at a hospital 00:29:23.16\00:29:24.93 and the name of the hospital was St. Clair. 00:29:24.96\00:29:27.76 And as I'm playing for her, 00:29:27.83\00:29:30.57 I could notice 00:29:30.67\00:29:32.40 that several patients were coming out in the hall, 00:29:32.43\00:29:35.44 trying to see what was going on. 00:29:35.47\00:29:37.81 And they expressed their wish to listen to music also. 00:29:37.84\00:29:42.18 So I said, "As soon as they play for her, 00:29:42.21\00:29:45.85 I'll play for you." 00:29:45.88\00:29:47.22 So then I started going room by room 00:29:47.32\00:29:48.95 and playing for the patients, 00:29:48.98\00:29:50.89 until I got to a girl's room and she was just sleeping. 00:29:50.92\00:29:54.59 And her mom was in her bedside with a Bible open 00:29:54.62\00:29:57.66 and she seemed to be praying. 00:29:57.69\00:29:59.26 And I walked in and I said, 00:29:59.29\00:30:01.33 "May I pray with you 00:30:01.36\00:30:03.83 and could I play also the violin?" 00:30:03.87\00:30:06.80 They said, "Yes, please do it." 00:30:06.84\00:30:08.17 And so we prayed and I play one of the hymns, 00:30:08.20\00:30:14.24 which is "How Great Thou Art." 00:30:14.28\00:30:17.31 And a minute and a half past 00:30:17.41\00:30:18.98 and the girl opened up her eyes and she looked around 00:30:19.01\00:30:22.75 and she was unable to, try to speak but she couldn't. 00:30:22.78\00:30:26.39 Only guttural sounds came out of her throat. 00:30:26.42\00:30:29.99 And her mom started screaming to cry 00:30:30.03\00:30:34.36 and yell and nurses rushed in 00:30:34.40\00:30:36.90 and I got goose bumps and scared. 00:30:37.00\00:30:38.73 What did I do? 00:30:38.77\00:30:40.17 What have I done is as I'm walking away, 00:30:40.20\00:30:42.17 her mom grabs me on the arm. 00:30:42.20\00:30:44.61 And I said, "What did I do? What happened?" 00:30:44.64\00:30:47.31 And she very emotionally looked at me and says, 00:30:47.41\00:30:49.71 "My daughter was in coma for three years. 00:30:49.74\00:30:53.55 And she woke up with the music." 00:30:53.58\00:30:56.05 I said, "Praise the Lord!" 00:30:56.08\00:30:59.02 And that day 00:30:59.05\00:31:00.46 I decided to be an instrument in the hands of God 00:31:00.56\00:31:02.82 with my violin. 00:31:02.86\00:31:04.23 I hope everyone understood that 00:31:04.26\00:31:06.90 for three years she was in a coma, 00:31:06.93\00:31:09.86 and when you played, "How great Thou art", 00:31:09.90\00:31:13.30 she responded and opened her eyes. 00:31:13.34\00:31:15.80 God woke her, obviously. God woke her up. 00:31:15.84\00:31:17.87 How indeed, how great Thou art, Lord. 00:31:17.91\00:31:22.21 So... 00:31:22.24\00:31:23.61 And then I started 00:31:23.65\00:31:24.98 to visit the hospital every week and play. 00:31:25.01\00:31:26.88 Yeah, I guess. 00:31:26.92\00:31:28.25 And miracles have happened, amazing stories. 00:31:28.28\00:31:31.65 Like for instance, there was a girl, 00:31:31.69\00:31:33.12 she was in deep depression. 00:31:33.15\00:31:35.39 For two months, she didn't eat any longer 00:31:35.42\00:31:37.49 and she was only on intravenous, IV, right? 00:31:37.53\00:31:42.93 And, I came in and I said to her mother, 00:31:42.96\00:31:47.47 "Can I play for her?" 00:31:47.50\00:31:48.84 "Yes, she's depressed." 00:31:48.87\00:31:50.21 They say, "Well, play something happy." 00:31:50.24\00:31:51.57 So I play, "One of the Seasons, Vivaldi's Four Seasons, 00:31:51.61\00:31:54.31 the Spring." 00:31:54.34\00:31:58.98 And halfway the song, 00:31:59.01\00:32:02.25 the girl sitting up on the bed, 00:32:02.28\00:32:04.79 and because she was in catatonic state 00:32:04.82\00:32:07.66 and her mouth was open, her eyes were closed. 00:32:07.69\00:32:10.23 And she opened her eyes. 00:32:10.26\00:32:11.59 She closed her mouth to sit down, 00:32:11.63\00:32:12.96 she started to move in the chair. 00:32:12.99\00:32:15.26 And by the time I finished the music, 00:32:15.30\00:32:16.93 I'd look at her mom and asked, "What is your daughter's name?" 00:32:17.03\00:32:21.04 Because she wasn't even talking any longer. 00:32:21.07\00:32:23.77 And the girl looked at me and said, 00:32:23.81\00:32:25.14 "My name is Elizabeth." 00:32:25.17\00:32:26.64 I saw Elizabeth, "Oh, I'm so glad, 00:32:26.68\00:32:29.54 you feel good with the music. 00:32:29.58\00:32:31.51 Well, I wish, well may the Lord be with you." 00:32:31.55\00:32:33.48 And I left the room. 00:32:33.58\00:32:34.92 As I leave, two nurses are rushing towards the room. 00:32:34.95\00:32:37.95 And I said, "What happened?" 00:32:37.99\00:32:39.35 And they said, "Elizabeth called, 00:32:39.39\00:32:40.99 she want us to help her get up from the bed. 00:32:41.02\00:32:43.89 She wants to walk through the halls of the hospital." 00:32:43.99\00:32:46.96 Glory to God! 00:32:47.00\00:32:48.30 So the music brought her out of the depression. 00:32:48.33\00:32:50.80 Glory to God! 00:32:50.90\00:32:52.23 But even more amazing things that I will always remember 00:32:52.27\00:32:55.87 are patients in their terminal stage, for instance, 00:32:55.90\00:32:59.57 that they listen to the music 00:32:59.61\00:33:01.38 and brought them peace and comfort. 00:33:01.41\00:33:03.65 There was one gentleman, and he had done, 00:33:03.68\00:33:07.62 finished chest chemotherapy and I played for him. 00:33:07.65\00:33:12.05 And when I left, I said, "May God be with you." 00:33:12.09\00:33:15.39 And tears rolled down his face. 00:33:15.42\00:33:17.76 And he said, "God just paid me a visit." 00:33:17.79\00:33:20.30 Oh, how precious. 00:33:20.33\00:33:21.73 Why do you think? 00:33:21.76\00:33:23.63 I mean, I believe God made us with musical minds. 00:33:23.67\00:33:27.70 And I think music is a language of its own. 00:33:27.74\00:33:30.91 Do you believe... 00:33:30.94\00:33:32.27 I mean, you must pray quite a bit 00:33:32.31\00:33:33.64 before you go into the hospital. 00:33:33.74\00:33:35.71 But what do you think it is about music 00:33:35.74\00:33:38.01 that reaches people in a place that words can't? 00:33:38.05\00:33:44.25 First of all, I understand is 00:33:44.29\00:33:46.12 it's divinely created. 00:33:46.15\00:33:48.66 And God gave us music 00:33:48.69\00:33:50.39 that we may pray with our words also. 00:33:50.43\00:33:53.46 And music effect... 00:33:53.50\00:33:54.83 Oh, stop for just a second because you just, 00:33:54.83\00:33:57.53 you know, this is something when you said, 00:33:57.57\00:34:00.74 He gave us music 00:34:00.77\00:34:02.10 so that we can pray with our words... 00:34:02.14\00:34:03.47 Pray with our words. 00:34:03.51\00:34:04.84 Worship songs, to me, our prayers set to music. 00:34:04.87\00:34:10.05 Correct. 00:34:10.08\00:34:11.41 And I wish people would learn, that's a sacred moment. 00:34:11.45\00:34:15.32 When we're singing a worship song to God, 00:34:15.35\00:34:18.72 that's a sacred moment. 00:34:18.75\00:34:20.66 Don't be talking during that, 00:34:20.69\00:34:22.16 you wouldn't talk during a prayer. 00:34:22.19\00:34:24.23 Don't be talking and punching your neighbor doing that 00:34:24.26\00:34:26.70 because we need to appreciate 00:34:26.73\00:34:30.43 that is a prayer set to music. 00:34:30.47\00:34:33.50 Yeah. 00:34:33.60\00:34:34.94 I don't mean to be critic, 00:34:34.97\00:34:37.17 but I feel we still need to learn 00:34:37.27\00:34:39.37 that in our churches. 00:34:39.41\00:34:40.74 Amen. 00:34:40.84\00:34:42.54 When it comes to music, 00:34:42.58\00:34:43.91 it seems to be something secondary. 00:34:44.01\00:34:46.21 People start to talk or they sing, 00:34:46.25\00:34:49.95 but they don't open their mouth. 00:34:50.05\00:34:53.72 Obviously, I'm talking about a few, 00:34:53.82\00:34:55.22 I'm not talking, I'm part of everyone. 00:34:55.26\00:34:57.39 But I feel we need to comprehend 00:34:57.43\00:34:59.39 exactly what you just said that 00:34:59.43\00:35:01.46 we are worshipping the Lord, the angels sing, 00:35:01.50\00:35:04.50 "Holy, holy, holy," all the time. 00:35:04.53\00:35:06.94 So it's a very sacred moment, really music, 00:35:07.04\00:35:09.87 and music affects us not only spiritually, 00:35:09.90\00:35:14.41 emotionally, but also physically. 00:35:14.44\00:35:16.44 We could have a whole other interview of three hours long, 00:35:16.48\00:35:20.32 just explaining the power of music, 00:35:20.42\00:35:22.82 scientifically proved, 00:35:22.85\00:35:24.92 how it will affect us in all senses, 00:35:24.95\00:35:28.16 how it will produce hormones in us. 00:35:28.19\00:35:31.46 And different types of music, different types of rhythms, 00:35:31.49\00:35:34.60 harmonies, melodies. 00:35:34.63\00:35:36.63 And Ellen White has a beautiful thought that says, 00:35:36.73\00:35:42.00 "Used properly, 00:35:42.04\00:35:43.37 music may never find parallel 00:35:43.47\00:35:46.84 in its power to instill in men 00:35:46.88\00:35:50.41 the true value of morals and the principles 00:35:50.45\00:35:54.28 that should govern our lives." 00:35:54.32\00:35:56.12 Oh, that's gorgeous. So... 00:35:56.15\00:35:58.69 I saw something on television recently 00:35:58.72\00:36:00.99 that was saying that 00:36:01.02\00:36:02.36 when you introduce your children, 00:36:02.39\00:36:04.83 as little toddlers introduce them to classical music 00:36:04.86\00:36:09.43 that it actually helps their brain develop 00:36:09.46\00:36:13.07 in a way that they wouldn't otherwise. 00:36:13.10\00:36:15.10 So that is something really special. 00:36:15.14\00:36:17.41 I know you've brought a video and we want to show this video. 00:36:17.44\00:36:21.31 This is of Dr. Paulo Torres 00:36:21.34\00:36:27.42 in the hospitals in Brazil. 00:36:27.45\00:36:29.12 That is such a wonderful ministry. 00:39:51.45\00:39:54.82 And you know, 00:39:54.86\00:39:56.46 Paulo has played not only in the hospitals 00:39:56.49\00:39:59.43 but in prisons, in orphanages 00:39:59.46\00:40:01.70 to let people feel "The Love of God." 00:40:01.73\00:40:06.13 And right now we want him to play that song for us. 00:40:06.17\00:40:09.44 That was heavenly. 00:45:22.68\00:45:25.09 It just transports you into the presence of the Lord, 00:45:25.12\00:45:28.36 "The Love of God." 00:45:28.39\00:45:30.73 And I hope that you understand that God is a very personal God 00:45:30.76\00:45:35.60 and He's an interrelated God with His, 00:45:35.63\00:45:39.20 the creatures that He has created. 00:45:39.23\00:45:41.74 And if we will lend our ear to Him, 00:45:41.77\00:45:45.77 He will direct us. 00:45:45.81\00:45:47.68 Paulo, thank you so much for that. 00:45:47.71\00:45:51.41 Tell us how God kind of prompted you 00:45:51.45\00:45:56.52 if you will to move here in 2016? 00:45:56.55\00:46:01.22 I started to pray that God would show me 00:46:01.26\00:46:07.13 what to do with my life, with my ministry 00:46:07.13\00:46:10.67 that I could be more useful in church 00:46:10.70\00:46:13.64 and also reaching people. 00:46:13.74\00:46:15.27 I was doing the hospital volunteer playing. 00:46:15.30\00:46:20.38 And I was working too hard. 00:46:20.48\00:46:21.81 They had many concerts. 00:46:21.84\00:46:23.18 I had, my agenda was full. 00:46:23.21\00:46:25.45 I was holding three jobs 40 hours each. 00:46:25.48\00:46:29.65 It was amazing. 00:46:29.68\00:46:31.75 Of course, in Brazil... 00:46:31.79\00:46:33.76 How happy did that make your wife? 00:46:33.86\00:46:35.82 Not very happy. 00:46:35.86\00:46:37.53 I don't have to clock. 00:46:37.63\00:46:38.96 I didn't have to clock all those hours 00:46:38.99\00:46:40.40 because you teach some, you prepare at home. 00:46:40.50\00:46:42.96 It's the way it works in Brazil 00:46:43.00\00:46:44.33 but it was fairly heavy schedule. 00:46:44.37\00:46:46.80 And plus that I was asked to do recording, 00:46:46.84\00:46:49.60 so I would have to cancel this to do that. 00:46:49.64\00:46:52.54 And I said, "Lord, please show me something? 00:46:52.57\00:46:54.71 What would You like me to do?" 00:46:54.74\00:46:57.41 And the hospital things 00:46:57.51\00:47:00.35 started to become more and more important 00:47:00.45\00:47:02.55 and up to the point that all televisions in the nation, 00:47:02.58\00:47:06.02 in Brazil started to interview me 00:47:06.05\00:47:07.92 and I did many programs for them. 00:47:07.96\00:47:10.66 They visited the hospitals with me 00:47:10.69\00:47:12.83 and they were filming and speaking to patients. 00:47:12.86\00:47:15.50 So that became something very important. 00:47:15.53\00:47:18.33 At the same time, 00:47:18.37\00:47:19.70 I was assaulted with gun on my head three times. 00:47:19.73\00:47:26.07 And I said, "Lord, I think 00:47:26.11\00:47:27.58 this is becoming kind of dangerous." 00:47:27.61\00:47:30.55 I have family, my sister and my niece live in Florida. 00:47:30.58\00:47:35.68 And I said, "Maybe, I should move to Florida 00:47:35.72\00:47:38.05 for a sabbatical." 00:47:38.09\00:47:40.06 But even though it was just a sabbatical, 00:47:40.16\00:47:42.59 I sold my home. 00:47:42.62\00:47:45.93 And I said, 00:47:45.96\00:47:47.30 "I trusted that Lord will open doors there for me." 00:47:47.40\00:47:50.03 And I came to America. 00:47:53.40\00:47:56.00 In a few days after I left my home, 00:47:56.04\00:48:00.51 the new owner was shot at the house. 00:48:00.54\00:48:02.98 Oh, my! 00:48:03.01\00:48:04.85 And so several things were happening 00:48:04.88\00:48:07.25 and I knew that the Lord's hand was guiding me. 00:48:07.28\00:48:10.62 And here I offered myself 00:48:10.72\00:48:13.89 at the hospitals in Florida, 00:48:13.92\00:48:18.09 at Flagler, Florida Flagler Hospital. 00:48:18.13\00:48:22.70 Florida Hospital Flagler 00:48:22.73\00:48:24.07 and Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center. 00:48:24.17\00:48:27.64 And for 10 months, 00:48:27.67\00:48:29.00 I was a volunteer playing the violin. 00:48:29.04\00:48:32.14 And I was then invited to become their music minister 00:48:32.17\00:48:36.54 because of the benefit the music was bringing 00:48:36.58\00:48:39.28 to everyone in the hospital. 00:48:39.31\00:48:40.72 Oh, you know, 00:48:40.75\00:48:42.08 you think about the stress that even doctors and nurses, 00:48:42.12\00:48:46.65 the hospitals have a stressful environment. 00:48:46.76\00:48:50.63 And I'm sure that music does bring about a calm atmosphere. 00:48:50.73\00:48:56.46 Tell us real quickly 00:48:56.50\00:48:57.83 I want to put up your website address 00:48:57.87\00:49:01.27 and this will be on the screen, 00:49:01.30\00:49:02.97 but let me spell it for those who are listening on the radio. 00:49:03.00\00:49:08.54 MaestroPauloTorres, 00:49:08.58\00:49:11.48 and your email is DrPaulTorres, 00:49:25.09\00:49:29.20 and I swallowed the u on Paulo, 00:49:29.23\00:49:32.73 D- R-PA-U-L-O-T-O-R-R-E-S @gmail.com. 00:49:32.77\00:49:39.47 Right. 00:49:39.51\00:49:40.88 And the reason I want to make sure those got up 00:49:40.91\00:49:42.94 is because you may like Boston did 00:49:42.98\00:49:47.22 want to invite Dr. Torres to come 00:49:47.32\00:49:50.19 and do something special. 00:49:50.22\00:49:52.75 Tell us about what happened in Boston 00:49:52.79\00:49:55.16 in the week of prayer? 00:49:55.19\00:49:56.52 They asked me to come for a week of prayer 00:49:56.56\00:49:59.89 and talk about music, about worship, adoration. 00:50:00.00\00:50:05.57 And it was wonderful 00:50:05.60\00:50:07.30 because I was able to explain all the aspects of music. 00:50:07.40\00:50:10.87 On the first day, 00:50:10.91\00:50:12.24 I basically gave lectures on music, 00:50:12.27\00:50:14.94 the power of music and the effect of music upon us. 00:50:14.98\00:50:19.05 And then I was getting into the way God 00:50:19.08\00:50:22.15 directs music to impress our minds, our hearts, 00:50:22.18\00:50:26.82 to become more sensitive to everything around us 00:50:26.86\00:50:29.82 to His Word, and to worship Him properly. 00:50:29.86\00:50:35.20 And at the end, we had three churches 00:50:35.23\00:50:38.67 that canceled all their events, 00:50:38.70\00:50:41.10 and they all came to this place in Brockton. 00:50:41.14\00:50:44.94 And where we then had a worship with at least I think, 00:50:44.97\00:50:48.14 800 people. 00:50:48.18\00:50:49.51 Amen. 00:50:49.54\00:50:50.88 You know, I always say 00:50:50.91\00:50:52.25 that the purpose of our music service 00:50:52.28\00:50:56.45 in our Sabbath service is to plow up our hearts 00:50:56.48\00:51:03.02 and make us good soil to receive the Word of God. 00:51:03.06\00:51:07.83 So I think that music is part of God's design, 00:51:07.86\00:51:11.03 part of His plan for the church service, 00:51:11.07\00:51:13.80 and it's very important. 00:51:13.90\00:51:15.84 And I believe, 00:51:15.87\00:51:17.77 this is my personal opinion, 00:51:17.81\00:51:19.57 I'm not hearing anything from the Lord. 00:51:19.61\00:51:21.71 But I believe that is 00:51:21.74\00:51:23.08 when you ask for greater ministry in music, 00:51:23.11\00:51:26.05 if you can teach people 00:51:26.08\00:51:28.52 the truth about worship and music, 00:51:28.55\00:51:30.85 I think God will use you in a mighty way. 00:51:30.89\00:51:33.42 Well, we're gonna take a quick break 00:51:33.46\00:51:35.06 because we want you to have the opportunity 00:51:35.09\00:51:38.89 to see our most recent news break, 00:51:38.93\00:51:41.36 but then we're going to come back 00:51:41.40\00:51:42.83 for a closing thought from Dr. Paulo Torres. 00:51:42.86\00:51:46.37
