I want to spend my life 00:00:01.36\00:00:06.87 Mending broken people 00:00:07.30\00:00:11.91 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.24\00:00:17.51 Removing pain 00:00:18.41\00:00:22.55 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.49\00:00:28.49 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.72\00:00:33.66 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.30\00:00:39.20 Mending broken people 00:00:39.93\00:00:44.24 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.34\00:00:50.68 Mending broken people 00:00:51.05\00:00:55.62 Hello, I'm Shelley Quinn, and welcome once again 00:01:10.37\00:01:12.73 to 3ABN Today program! This is the Mending 00:01:12.83\00:01:16.10 Broken People Network. You make it possible. 00:01:16.17\00:01:18.71 Thank you for your love, your prayers, and 00:01:18.77\00:01:20.74 your financial support. We have an inspirational 00:01:20.81\00:01:24.08 interview today to share with you- actually, 00:01:24.15\00:01:27.48 we'll be looking at two different ministries: 00:01:27.55\00:01:30.45 one is the Congo Frontline Mission, and then the 00:01:30.49\00:01:33.49 other is the Desert Tree Ministry. It's 00:01:33.59\00:01:36.39 interesting, because there's a strong family 00:01:36.42\00:01:39.43 connection between these two. Let me just read 00:01:39.49\00:01:44.10 this scripture-something that is not anything 00:01:44.17\00:01:48.20 new to you, but it is very special in the 00:01:48.27\00:01:51.54 relation to today's program. It is the 00:01:53.04\00:01:56.85 Great Commission! Not a suggestion; it's actually 00:01:56.91\00:02:00.72 a command. Jesus said in Matthew 28:19-20, 00:02:00.75\00:02:06.49 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the 00:02:06.59\00:02:09.89 nations." Not just your next-door neighbor. 00:02:09.92\00:02:13.06 "Baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, 00:02:13.13\00:02:16.23 and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe 00:02:16.26\00:02:20.64 all things that I have commanded you." Then 00:02:20.70\00:02:23.74 He says, "Lo, I am with you always, even to the 00:02:23.84\00:02:26.17 ends of the earth." We have wonderful guests 00:02:26.24\00:02:30.55 with us today! Let me introduce them. All of 00:02:30.61\00:02:33.45 their last names are Mosier, so we'll 00:02:33.52\00:02:36.28 just start with Keith. Keith, you are the 00:02:36.35\00:02:39.82 president of Congo Frontline Mission, right? 00:02:39.89\00:02:43.36 - That's correct. - And then you married the 00:02:43.43\00:02:44.99 beautiful Tammy who is a nurse. Tammy is with 00:02:45.03\00:02:48.70 Congo Frontline Mission. Then, Papa Mosier, Barry, 00:02:48.76\00:02:53.94 you are the treasurer of the Frontline Congo Mission. 00:02:54.00\00:02:57.64 - Correct. - Let me just get a little backstory. 00:02:57.71\00:02:59.97 Tell us how you grew up. I know your father was 00:03:00.08\00:03:04.71 a missionary. How did you get the call to 00:03:04.75\00:03:08.68 mission work? - As a teenager, moving to 00:03:08.75\00:03:11.75 Tanzania with my family, learning the language, 00:03:12.65\00:03:15.76 starting to preach, I felt very clearly within 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.99 the first couple of years that we were working 00:03:18.06\00:03:19.73 there, that God was calling me to be a full-time 00:03:19.83\00:03:22.73 missionary. Because of the interaction we had, 00:03:22.80\00:03:26.20 leaders in the Congo, church leaders, found out 00:03:26.27\00:03:30.57 about what we were doing, and they met us at a 00:03:30.67\00:03:32.17 meeting there at the division and said, "Why 00:03:32.24\00:03:33.91 don't you come to Congo?" I said, "Well, let me 00:03:33.98\00:03:37.15 pray about that." I went to college and realized 00:03:37.25\00:03:39.31 that's where God wanted me to go. So, after I 00:03:39.38\00:03:42.32 got out of college with my theology degree, I 00:03:42.38\00:03:44.95 could've taken a pastoral position in Central 00:03:44.99\00:03:46.55 California with Pastor Jerry Page, or I could've 00:03:46.62\00:03:49.29 stayed, but I felt that God was very clear with 00:03:49.32\00:03:52.03 me. He wanted me to go to Congo, so that's where 00:03:52.13\00:03:54.76 I've been for over 10 years. - When did all 00:03:54.83\00:03:58.20 the civil unrest begin in Congo? - There's been 00:03:58.27\00:04:01.44 civil unrest for decades. When we got there, 00:04:01.50\00:04:04.14 it was at the tail end of a decade of war. 00:04:04.21\00:04:07.11 That claimed the lives of around 5 and a half 00:04:07.18\00:04:10.55 million people. A lot of people from bullets, 00:04:10.61\00:04:13.88 then a lot of people from diseases and starvation. 00:04:13.98\00:04:16.62 Just the people in Congo have gone through such 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.45 terrible trauma, and they really need the 00:04:18.55\00:04:21.26 hope and the healing that comes from the Word 00:04:21.32\00:04:23.53 of God. - Amen. But Tammy, you graduated as a 00:04:23.59\00:04:26.73 nurse; you and your sister graduated together. 00:04:26.80\00:04:29.20 We'll meet her sister in the second half of the 00:04:29.26\00:04:30.97 program. You were not married to Keith when 00:04:31.03\00:04:34.30 you first went over, were you? - No. I was 17 when 00:04:34.37\00:04:37.51 I went to Tanzania, not to Congo. But I 00:04:37.57\00:04:41.28 loved missionary work there. I helped Keith's 00:04:41.34\00:04:44.31 mom deliver babies, I did some bush clinics, 00:04:44.38\00:04:48.12 and I really enjoyed that, so I went back 00:04:48.22\00:04:50.82 to the States and I got my nursing. I was really 00:04:50.92\00:04:53.86 praying about where God would want me to go as 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.66 as a missionary. I read different books about 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.00 different African countries. I wanted to go to the 00:05:00.06\00:05:04.27 worst country, because I wanted to help people 00:05:04.33\00:05:06.63 who were really hurting; the place where nobody 00:05:06.70\00:05:09.50 else wanted to go. I really wanted to go there, 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.24 and I saw that that was Congo, so that's where 00:05:12.61\00:05:16.71 I wanted to go. I didn't know that Keith wanted 00:05:16.78\00:05:18.21 to go there. I thought I would end up going 00:05:18.28\00:05:20.02 there by myself, but then I found out he 00:05:20.08\00:05:23.82 wanted to go there. We both got married and 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.62 went there together. - So you married before 00:05:26.69\00:05:29.12 you went? I remember you were here on your 00:05:29.16\00:05:30.89 honeymoon. - That's correct. - You came to 00:05:30.96\00:05:33.09 3ABN the first time; just been married a 00:05:33.13\00:05:35.73 couple of weeks. Aren't you impressed when 00:05:35.80\00:05:40.24 someone- well, you know, when the Lord says, "Be of 00:05:40.34\00:05:44.24 good courage," and He calls you, you have to 00:05:44.31\00:05:46.84 trust in God. I know you've had some rough 00:05:46.94\00:05:49.18 times; we'll be talking about that. God has 00:05:49.28\00:05:52.45 protected you. So, Barry, you have been a missionary 00:05:52.51\00:05:56.85 for how many years? - Well, I was in Tanzania 00:05:56.92\00:06:00.16 for 8 years as a volunteer missionary. Originally, 00:06:00.26\00:06:04.49 I was a CPA living in America, but the Lord 00:06:04.56\00:06:07.60 said, "I have some other work for you to do." 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.76 So, we moved to Tanzania in 2000. Then it was 00:06:09.83\00:06:15.70 after Keith finished his college, he called us 00:06:15.77\00:06:18.41 to come help him get Congo Frontline Mission 00:06:18.51\00:06:21.28 started. I'll tell you. At first, we weren't 00:06:21.34\00:06:24.25 very excited. That country's got a poor reputation 00:06:24.31\00:06:27.12 for all the trouble it's had, but we thought 00:06:28.05\00:06:30.45 about how much need there was. So, Marybeth 00:06:30.55\00:06:33.62 and I decided to move there. We lived there 00:06:33.69\00:06:36.39 for three years, helping to get Congo Frontline 00:06:36.46\00:06:39.59 Missions going. - And it's been now, what? 00:06:39.66\00:06:42.50 11 years? - Yes. - Okay. Tell us a little bit about 00:06:42.60\00:06:45.40 what you're doing in the Congo. - Well, we have 00:06:45.47\00:06:47.57 65 church planters working in dark villages, 00:06:47.67\00:06:51.94 opening churches. - And explain what you mean 00:06:52.04\00:06:55.74 by "dark villages." - I consider a "dark village" 00:06:55.84\00:06:59.75 a place where they don't know the truths of the 00:06:59.85\00:07:01.48 Word of God. - Where the light of the Lord has yet 00:07:01.52\00:07:03.72 to shine. - So, they need to hear the beautiful 00:07:03.82\00:07:06.42 promises that God has given us. They need to 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.12 hear the messages-the three angels' messages. 00:07:09.22\00:07:11.46 They need to hear the beautiful promises of 00:07:11.56\00:07:13.76 the Ten Commandments. They need to hear these 00:07:13.83\00:07:15.46 things that are going to point them to Jesus 00:07:15.53\00:07:16.87 and help them understand He's coming soon. He 00:07:16.90\00:07:20.14 wants to take us home. I just cannot wait to 00:07:20.20\00:07:23.47 be there with all the people. I thank our 00:07:23.51\00:07:25.77 viewers for the help that they've given to us 00:07:25.81\00:07:29.14 to spread the message these last 11 years, 00:07:29.21\00:07:33.42 now, in Congo. We're excited! - Tell us a little 00:07:33.45\00:07:37.89 bit about the people and their beliefs. If 00:07:37.95\00:07:41.26 they're living in a dark village, are they animist? 00:07:41.29\00:07:44.26 Are they... What is their spiritual background? 00:07:44.33\00:07:47.93 Are the people friendly? I mean, they've been 00:07:48.00\00:07:50.27 going through so much war and strife. - They've 00:07:50.30\00:07:53.13 gone through a lot of challenges. It seems 00:07:53.20\00:07:54.80 that as the years go by, we realize that the 00:07:54.87\00:07:57.67 smallest incident can ignite quite a large 00:07:57.74\00:08:01.44 disturbance or an event. At the heart of things, 00:08:01.54\00:08:05.15 people are people around the world, and they all 00:08:05.21\00:08:07.82 have the same needs. They need Jesus, they 00:08:07.88\00:08:09.98 need hope for the future. We have a lot of variety 00:08:10.09\00:08:14.82 of people who claim Christianity. Oftentimes, 00:08:14.86\00:08:17.93 yet, they don't know what the Bible says. At the 00:08:17.99\00:08:21.60 root of a lot of people's culture is this animistic 00:08:21.66\00:08:25.37 background and spirit and demon worship that 00:08:25.43\00:08:29.34 pervades their fears and their lives in general. 00:08:29.40\00:08:34.14 I think about the way we've been able to start. 00:08:34.18\00:08:37.55 We knew we were too small of a team to really get 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.68 very far by ourselves, but we knew that if we 00:08:39.78\00:08:43.49 train the local church members and we train 00:08:43.59\00:08:46.19 people to go out and share, then we can get 00:08:46.25\00:08:48.06 a small army together. That's been what our 00:08:48.16\00:08:51.73 experience has been in the last 11 years. I 00:08:51.79\00:08:55.46 remember we started off with the first year 00:08:55.56\00:08:57.47 doing our training and sending people out into 00:08:57.53\00:08:59.63 this harvest, and we had a small number of baptisms 00:08:59.70\00:09:02.50 comparatively. That year, we had 270 people baptized 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.47 the first year. - That's wonderful. - And yet, 00:09:05.57\00:09:07.54 that's amazing, because every soul brings joy 00:09:07.61\00:09:10.55 in heaven. There are songs up there from that. 00:09:10.61\00:09:12.71 A couple of years ago, we baptized over 1,200. 00:09:12.78\00:09:15.58 Last year, it was over 1,300. This year, we 00:09:15.65\00:09:18.22 project we'll probably baptize close to 1,800 00:09:18.29\00:09:20.62 people from the work that's happening there. 00:09:20.69\00:09:23.96 God has just been so good to us. - Amen and amen! 00:09:24.03\00:09:27.43 So, you're part of the Outpost Centers International, 00:09:27.50\00:09:31.77 which makes them a 501(c)(3) ministry. It's the people 00:09:31.83\00:09:35.60 who support you. The Bible workers- are they paid 00:09:35.67\00:09:40.14 a stipend? - Yeah. We raise about $105 each 00:09:40.21\00:09:45.71 month for all of the people planting churches 00:09:45.85\00:09:49.18 in dark areas. We've had some exciting stories 00:09:49.28\00:09:53.29 from those. I think about my friend Ramazani Atindi 00:09:53.39\00:09:57.39 when he first heard about the message. It 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.00 was through one of our evangelists. Within a 00:10:00.06\00:10:02.63 week, he said, "I never heard the truths of the 00:10:02.73\00:10:04.60 Bible before." He was unhappy when we first 00:10:04.70\00:10:06.40 came to his village, but when he heard the 00:10:06.50\00:10:08.87 truths of the Bible, he wanted to be baptized 00:10:08.94\00:10:10.61 together with his wife and their children, then 00:10:10.67\00:10:13.54 he came to our school and has headed out as a 00:10:13.64\00:10:16.78 church planter himself and has had two very 00:10:16.85\00:10:20.12 successful church plants that he's organized and 00:10:20.18\00:10:22.85 managed, so we're just excited. As we look back 00:10:24.02\00:10:26.86 at 11 years, we see 8,000 baptisms, we see 00:10:26.92\00:10:31.19 the radio station that we've partnered with- 00:10:31.29\00:10:33.43 Adventist World Radio, to start, which has a 00:10:33.50\00:10:38.40 listener base at over 3 million. We look at the 00:10:38.47\00:10:41.57 dental and medical work that we've been able 00:10:41.64\00:10:44.37 to do, the training; we look at all the churches 00:10:44.51\00:10:48.14 that we've built. We've built over 80 churches, 00:10:48.21\00:10:50.05 and a number of those are one-day churches. 00:10:50.11\00:10:51.51 We just have so many positive things that we 00:10:51.61\00:10:55.58 can look back and praise God about, but probably 00:10:55.65\00:10:58.45 what touches my heart more than anything else 00:10:58.49\00:11:00.26 is the training. We hold the training each year 00:11:00.32\00:11:02.82 on our campus. We also go to more remote areas 00:11:02.92\00:11:08.93 where people can't come to us; we'll go to them. 00:11:09.00\00:11:11.33 We've trained 1,100 people-a little bit more 00:11:11.37\00:11:15.00 than that number-in the last 11 years. It's these 00:11:15.10\00:11:19.57 people that we can go out and visit and see 00:11:19.64\00:11:21.41 the work that they've done. Like with Ramazani, I remember 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.01 going there not too long ago with my family, and we 00:11:24.08\00:11:27.72 got to see him and his family serving there. 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.82 My dad was actually with us at that time. - I think 00:11:29.92\00:11:33.12 we got a picture of the day I was there visiting 00:11:33.15\00:11:35.99 you in Congo this last year-late last year. I came, and we have 00:11:36.09\00:11:43.26 our meetings to kind of make plans for the future, 00:11:43.37\00:11:46.33 and there they are! I never miss the chance 00:11:46.43\00:11:49.14 to show my grandkids. - I know; they're beautiful! 00:11:49.24\00:11:51.74 4 little blonde-headed babies. - So we were 00:11:51.84\00:11:53.94 making plans for the upcoming year, and it 00:11:54.04\00:11:57.48 was on the last day of our meetings there that 00:11:57.55\00:12:00.92 a tragedy happened right on our campus. We were 00:12:00.95\00:12:05.52 in our meeting. I saw people running around 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.29 outside, and I didn't know what had happened. 00:12:07.36\00:12:10.69 We have a flatbed truck that does our road 00:12:10.79\00:12:13.90 maintenance on our road (we're out about 5 miles 00:12:13.96\00:12:16.36 from the city of Kisangani which is a million people). 00:12:16.43\00:12:21.07 That truck was headed out. It has some folding 00:12:21.17\00:12:25.77 up sides on each side of the bed of the truck. 00:12:25.81\00:12:31.25 Although our workers are all instructed, "Don't 00:12:31.31\00:12:34.58 ever sit on the sides," we had a new driver, 00:12:34.68\00:12:37.39 a Congolese driver, driving the truck out 00:12:37.45\00:12:39.42 the driveway that day, and one of the young men 00:12:39.49\00:12:41.46 disobeyed the instructions, sat on the edge of that, 00:12:41.52\00:12:44.66 lost his balance, fell over, and was killed 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.96 instantly when he made contact with the truck. 00:12:47.03\00:12:51.30 We had a doctor on campus. He raced out there and 00:12:51.43\00:12:54.20 said, "There's really nothing we can do for 00:12:54.27\00:12:55.87 this young man. He's gone." It was just so 00:12:55.97\00:12:58.57 tragic, but the local people came and said, 00:12:58.64\00:13:00.88 "Please." The people from his village are 00:13:00.94\00:13:05.61 only a mile away, and when they come, they're going 00:13:05.71\00:13:08.88 to start- we don't know what they'll do, but 00:13:08.92\00:13:10.72 it could be a mob here. "Get out of here as fast 00:13:10.79\00:13:13.02 as you can; all you white people. Please, leave. 00:13:13.09\00:13:16.19 Go to the city immediately. Leave this campus right 00:13:16.26\00:13:19.23 now. Your lives are in danger." So one 00:13:19.33\00:13:22.23 vehicle left quite quickly. I ran over to get Tammy 00:13:22.30\00:13:26.30 and the children. Well, Keith finished up a 00:13:26.37\00:13:29.10 couple things, locking up some things... 00:13:29.17\00:13:30.87 - Well, when he came to the house, he told me 00:13:31.97\00:13:34.11 what happened and I knew right away that our 00:13:34.21\00:13:36.78 lives were in danger. To get four children 00:13:36.85\00:13:39.91 out the door is a task, but one of my girls 00:13:40.02\00:13:43.75 had just taken a bath. She didn't have any 00:13:43.79\00:13:45.99 clothes on. My mom helped me get her 00:13:46.05\00:13:47.52 dressed quickly, I grabbed all of our 00:13:47.56\00:13:49.82 passports, a change of clothes for all the kids, 00:13:49.89\00:13:52.39 and I was out the door carrying the youngest 00:13:52.49\00:13:55.13 and the others were following me within 3 00:13:55.23\00:13:57.03 minutes. We were running to the car. We got in the 00:13:57.10\00:14:01.20 car and we left. - I remember coming up and 00:14:01.30\00:14:05.57 locking our house and getting out of there as 00:14:05.61\00:14:07.54 quickly as we could, throwing the things in 00:14:07.61\00:14:09.04 the back of our land cruiser pickup. Pastor 00:14:09.14\00:14:11.81 Entenzi? said, "Just leave as quickly as you 00:14:11.88\00:14:13.78 possibly can." So driving out, we had to skirt 00:14:13.82\00:14:16.22 around the body of the man who was laying 00:14:16.28\00:14:18.22 right there at the edge of our property. I remember 00:14:18.29\00:14:20.09 covering my kids' eyes so they wouldn't see 00:14:20.16\00:14:22.92 that, and already, there were people pointing 00:14:22.99\00:14:25.06 their finger at me. They were very angry. We 00:14:25.16\00:14:27.53 took off for town as quickly as we could. I 00:14:27.60\00:14:31.67 got to a place where the road was blocked with 00:14:31.73\00:14:33.77 somebody stuck in the road. I had to put it down in 00:14:33.87\00:14:35.90 four-wheel drive (low). We went around and went 00:14:35.97\00:14:38.24 through a big rut that was draining the hole 00:14:38.31\00:14:40.84 from that road, then we came up to another 00:14:40.91\00:14:43.51 spot where it was just a total impasse: just a big 00:14:43.58\00:14:45.38 mud hole on one side, and this man was pushing 00:14:45.45\00:14:47.75 his bicycle up the hill with a large load of 00:14:47.82\00:14:49.75 charcoal. I remember thinking, "How are we 00:14:49.82\00:14:52.75 going to get through?" So I stopped, and my 00:14:52.85\00:14:54.42 dad jumped out to help him. - I helped him push 00:14:54.52\00:14:57.39 his bicycle, Shelley, to the side of the road, 00:14:57.46\00:15:00.96 and Keith drove by. Just before I could run back 00:15:01.00\00:15:05.97 to the vehicle... You have to understand. One 00:15:06.07\00:15:09.44 of the common taxi of that whole area is a 00:15:09.50\00:15:12.64 motorcycle, so two of the brothers of the man 00:15:12.71\00:15:16.34 who had died came on these motorcycle taxis 00:15:16.41\00:15:21.95 and had caught up to us by that time. So, 00:15:22.02\00:15:25.42 I jumped in the vehicle; we continued on into 00:15:25.49\00:15:27.52 the outskirts of the city. The road is always filled 00:15:27.59\00:15:30.83 with people. Most people are just walking, so 00:15:30.89\00:15:33.46 you couldn't go super fast. Unfortunately, 00:15:33.53\00:15:37.63 these young taxi drivers, not related to the young 00:15:37.70\00:15:43.81 man who died, started yelling as they went, 00:15:43.94\00:15:47.38 "These people killed somebody! Don't let 00:15:47.44\00:15:49.81 them get away!" - Oh, my goodness. - Well, you 00:15:49.88\00:15:52.61 can imagine what that did. It was like striking a 00:15:52.65\00:15:55.48 match to dynamite. As we went, the mob just grew 00:15:55.58\00:15:59.39 behind us, chasing us, and there was no 00:15:59.45\00:16:03.29 reasoning with anybody to stop and explain anything. 00:16:03.39\00:16:06.36 As we started in toward the city, the motorcycles 00:16:06.43\00:16:11.63 started to overtake us and pass us. We came 00:16:11.70\00:16:17.31 to- of course, people were even grabbing gasoline 00:16:17.37\00:16:20.68 so they could catch us to burn us. It developed 00:16:20.84\00:16:25.55 into a horrible situation right away. - The Lord 00:16:25.65\00:16:29.48 certainly put His hedge of protection around you 00:16:29.55\00:16:32.95 to get you out of there. That's a miracle! - We 00:16:33.05\00:16:35.26 were just all praying. My little girl in the back 00:16:35.32\00:16:37.83 was telling Grandma, "I'm scared but I'm praying." 00:16:37.96\00:16:40.80 I've never been so scared in my life! With my 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.87 mother-in-law, my father, my wife and four kids 00:16:43.97\00:16:47.24 right there with me in the car... As these motorcycles- 00:16:47.34\00:16:50.07 some of them got past us. I couldn't drive very 00:16:50.14\00:16:53.68 fast, because there's all sorts of people in the 00:16:53.74\00:16:55.44 road and I don't want to bump into anybody, 'cause 00:16:55.54\00:16:58.91 that's the exact problem that they're thinking of. 00:16:58.98\00:17:02.05 I didn't know what to do. They got in front of us, 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.85 then there was another road, so I took that other 00:17:07.16\00:17:08.52 road and we're going to go into the main police 00:17:08.56\00:17:10.29 station. Pretty soon, they're right behind 00:17:10.36\00:17:12.19 me again. I slow down as there's a couple of police 00:17:12.29\00:17:14.86 officers on the side of the road, but as I look 00:17:14.93\00:17:17.23 back, I see there's just this huge mass-probably 00:17:17.30\00:17:19.60 100 motorcycles are following us by this 00:17:19.63\00:17:21.50 time, and I don't know what to do. I take off 00:17:21.60\00:17:25.74 to go to the main station. Just down the road, 00:17:25.81\00:17:28.91 they totally blocked off the road for road work, 00:17:28.98\00:17:32.71 so we are stuck. Literally, within seconds, our car 00:17:32.81\00:17:36.32 is surrounded by all these people just banging 00:17:36.38\00:17:39.02 on our windows and trying to get into our 00:17:39.12\00:17:41.59 car, trying to steal things and burn the 00:17:41.69\00:17:43.83 vehicle, and everything else. - In that moment, 00:17:43.93\00:17:48.50 I knew that there was absolutely no hope unless 00:17:48.63\00:17:51.87 God saved us, so I just prayed, "Lord, we're 00:17:51.97\00:17:54.94 in Your hands." My little girl in the back 00:17:55.00\00:17:57.74 seat told my mom who was with us- she said 00:17:57.81\00:18:00.48 that she was thinking about John Huss. The 00:18:00.58\00:18:03.28 kids just sat there quietly. - Explain who 00:18:03.38\00:18:08.22 John Huss is the martyr. Some people may not 00:18:08.28\00:18:12.22 know. - Back in the Dark Ages, John Huss 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.26 was a martyr for his faith. He burned at 00:18:14.32\00:18:16.36 the stake, and that was a very special story 00:18:16.42\00:18:20.73 to my daughter. - Yes. A special story to me, 00:18:20.80\00:18:25.77 too, because I always remember, in the story, 00:18:25.83\00:18:28.57 I've read where the night before he knew he 00:18:28.64\00:18:31.74 was to be burned that he tried to put his hand 00:18:31.81\00:18:34.44 over a candle flame and he couldn't- you know, 00:18:34.54\00:18:37.48 tried to see if he could endure. He just 00:18:37.55\00:18:40.12 prayed and said, "Lord, give me the strength." 00:18:40.22\00:18:42.72 He sang while he was being burned at the 00:18:42.78\00:18:46.55 stake. That tells me that God had to have 00:18:46.62\00:18:51.86 taken the pain from him, because no one could 00:18:51.93\00:18:54.20 be burning alive and sing. I mean, that's 00:18:54.30\00:18:57.90 impossible. So, what happened? Here you are 00:18:57.97\00:19:00.20 surrounded, people are banging on the... 00:19:00.27\00:19:02.47 What happened? - Well, I praise the Lord for 00:19:02.57\00:19:04.94 my mother-in-law. Even the stories that our 00:19:05.01\00:19:07.28 kids know is because my mother-in-law 00:19:07.38\00:19:09.21 reads the Great Controversy to them regularly, so 00:19:09.31\00:19:11.91 they've been reading out of these stories. They 00:19:12.01\00:19:13.98 knew what happens and they knew that we have 00:19:14.08\00:19:16.45 to put Jesus first always. My mother-in-law was 00:19:16.48\00:19:20.76 right there in the back seat. She's looking out 00:19:20.86\00:19:22.32 the windows-these angry people that are banging 00:19:22.39\00:19:25.79 on the window-and she just smiles at them. 00:19:25.89\00:19:28.70 As she smiles, the person who is standing there 00:19:28.76\00:19:31.23 at the window, they couldn't handle it, so 00:19:31.33\00:19:32.67 they turned away and left. Then that happened 00:19:32.70\00:19:35.87 three times! - Then the policeman came up to 00:19:35.97\00:19:41.08 our car and they were trying to get in, so 00:19:41.18\00:19:43.88 we opened the door, let him in, and they 00:19:44.01\00:19:47.28 grabbed Barry's phone but they didn't take 00:19:47.35\00:19:49.52 any of us out. I tried to help shut the door 00:19:49.62\00:19:53.36 with him, not that I can do anything. There's 00:19:53.46\00:19:55.59 6 guys on the outside pulling, but somehow, 00:19:55.66\00:19:58.46 the Lord helped us to shut that door. The 00:19:58.56\00:20:01.16 policeman got in the driver's seat and drove 00:20:01.23\00:20:04.27 us to the police station. - That's amazing. So, it 00:20:04.33\00:20:07.84 is really a tinderbox situation. All it takes 00:20:07.94\00:20:11.91 is an accusation, and obviously, you had nothing 00:20:12.01\00:20:15.14 to do with the death of that young man. It just 00:20:15.21\00:20:17.25 takes an accusation, and your lives were in danger, 00:20:17.35\00:20:20.75 but God certainly, CERTAINLY delivered you. 00:20:20.82\00:20:25.45 - He is faithful. - Amen. - He has answered our 00:20:25.52\00:20:27.76 prayers so many times. Just like it says in 00:20:27.82\00:20:30.03 Psalm 91, He tells of His protection, and we 00:20:30.09\00:20:34.00 can trust that He is there with us. When 00:20:34.06\00:20:36.46 that policeman got into the driver's seat, I put 00:20:36.50\00:20:38.50 it in super low because I was afraid he was 00:20:38.57\00:20:40.14 going to kill the car. He just fearlessly 00:20:40.20\00:20:43.20 backed up into this crowd, and people just 00:20:43.30\00:20:45.31 parted right in front of him. They tried to 00:20:45.37\00:20:48.04 stop the vehicle, but he just revved the engine 00:20:48.14\00:20:49.48 again and showed that he was going to keep going, 00:20:49.54\00:20:51.11 so they got out of the way and he drove us 00:20:51.21\00:20:52.55 to the police station with all these guys 00:20:52.58\00:20:54.28 following us. When we finally got there, they 00:20:54.35\00:20:57.19 took us in and there's this big mob outside. They 00:20:57.25\00:20:59.79 finally let the family members of the man who 00:20:59.89\00:21:02.69 died in there. When I went out to meet them, I just 00:21:02.72\00:21:06.43 started crying because I knew one of the men. 00:21:06.53\00:21:08.96 He was a friend of mine from the village. 00:21:09.03\00:21:10.37 I just was so sad. Actually, the family 00:21:10.40\00:21:12.93 members were quite understanding of the 00:21:12.97\00:21:15.40 painful situation. They came and said, "We're 00:21:15.47\00:21:17.91 so sorry that people were angry with you 00:21:17.97\00:21:20.48 and broke into your homes and created a 00:21:20.58\00:21:22.51 riot on campus. We're so sorry about the way 00:21:22.58\00:21:24.38 this happened." And we were really sorry for 00:21:24.45\00:21:26.55 them, too. We were grieving together through 00:21:26.61\00:21:29.32 the pain. - Wow, that's just amazing. - Yeah, 00:21:29.38\00:21:34.49 we actually built a house for them. It's kind 00:21:34.52\00:21:36.19 of a little help for their loss. It was just 00:21:36.26\00:21:41.56 heartbreaking. - Did you return to the village 00:21:41.63\00:21:43.77 after this or did you come on home? - From 00:21:43.87\00:21:46.74 the police station, we ended up going to a hotel 00:21:46.80\00:21:48.47 where we waited for a few days. Tammy and I 00:21:48.54\00:21:51.14 did go back to our property, but the situation was very 00:21:51.21\00:21:54.24 tense for a little while. Our family needed 00:21:54.31\00:21:57.48 a break, so we went to get our things, then we 00:21:57.55\00:21:59.78 exited the country after that. - That was very 00:21:59.81\00:22:03.65 wise. Tell us a little bit about the current 00:22:03.72\00:22:06.49 status of the Republic of the Congo. - When we were 00:22:06.52\00:22:10.59 planning to go back into the country, the political 00:22:10.63\00:22:13.86 situation had gotten more tense and worse. 00:22:13.93\00:22:16.43 There's been plans for an election and how the 00:22:16.50\00:22:19.47 leadership change will happen is very tense, 00:22:19.53\00:22:23.87 so we've realized that we don't have an open 00:22:23.94\00:22:26.98 door to go back into the country at this 00:22:27.04\00:22:28.91 time. We're staying on the outside. Continue 00:22:28.98\00:22:30.98 to send the resources into the Congo for Pastor 00:22:31.05\00:22:34.95 Entenzi? my chief assistant. He's been my right-hand 00:22:35.02\00:22:37.65 man, really, since the beginning. When we 00:22:37.72\00:22:39.12 started this project back in 2008, he's helped me. 00:22:39.19\00:22:41.86 And now, he's able to- - So the work continues. 00:22:41.92\00:22:43.63 - Be there and keep it going. That's why they're 00:22:43.69\00:22:46.03 able to be baptizing more this year than 00:22:46.09\00:22:48.13 we ever have-because he and his evangelistic 00:22:48.20\00:22:50.13 team are focusing on the task. When the going 00:22:50.20\00:22:53.77 gets tough in the country, people also find that as 00:22:53.84\00:22:57.14 a call to look for Jesus. - Amen. Amen. How beautiful 00:22:57.21\00:23:02.14 it is. Sometimes, I think people forget. We 00:23:02.21\00:23:05.51 feel like it's up to us if God makes a call. 00:23:05.58\00:23:07.85 Anytime that God puts a call on your heart, He 00:23:07.95\00:23:12.12 wants you to share and to train others. That's 00:23:12.15\00:23:14.46 why Jesus said, "Teaching them to observe all things 00:23:14.49\00:23:18.16 that I've commanded," because if God needs to 00:23:18.19\00:23:21.26 move you out of the situation, the work can 00:23:21.30\00:23:23.87 continue. That's really exciting to think-that 00:23:23.90\00:23:27.90 the training you've done with this gentleman 00:23:27.97\00:23:31.14 who served as your chief assistant-that he is 00:23:31.21\00:23:34.51 able, after 11 years of you mentoring him, 00:23:34.61\00:23:38.51 he's able to then watch over the rest of these 00:23:38.58\00:23:41.75 Bible workers. You brought some pictures, didn't you? 00:23:41.82\00:23:44.85 - Yeah. I'd like to actually show one of 00:23:44.92\00:23:46.89 the things that happened this year. You'll see 00:23:46.96\00:23:48.66 a training of some ladies. We've done two evangelism 00:23:48.72\00:23:51.53 trainings this year. Mama Mwangachuchu is 00:23:51.59\00:23:55.10 right in the center. She's our union president there. 00:23:55.16\00:23:57.73 We also have a lot of our ladies that are 00:23:57.83\00:24:01.30 helping their husbands plant churches out in 00:24:01.37\00:24:03.47 these remote areas. Tammy'll tell a little 00:24:03.54\00:24:05.84 bit more about that. - I'm really excited that 00:24:05.91\00:24:08.44 they had training for ladies, because Congo is 00:24:08.48\00:24:12.15 the worst place in the worst to be a mother. 00:24:12.21\00:24:15.45 These ladies are just hungry to be able to 00:24:16.32\00:24:20.22 learn and to have hope. At this training, they 00:24:20.26\00:24:24.36 also gave the materials for Sabbath schools. 00:24:24.43\00:24:28.06 - Are they schooled? Excuse me, but what is 00:24:28.13\00:24:29.46 the literacy rate? - Very low, especially with the 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.50 ladies. They read one word at a time, very 00:24:32.60\00:24:35.07 slowly, but they still want to learn. We created, 00:24:35.14\00:24:39.91 with the Lord's help, a Sabbath school program, 00:24:40.01\00:24:42.98 too, that's simple in their own language. We 00:24:43.04\00:24:48.52 gave that to them so that they can go back and 00:24:48.58\00:24:50.35 help the churches have children Sabbath schools. 00:24:51.52\00:24:55.16 - Glory to God. - I just wanted to tell about the 00:24:55.22\00:24:57.53 youngest girl who went through. When she was 00:24:57.59\00:25:01.00 12 years old, her father was drinking with a 00:25:01.06\00:25:04.43 couple of his buddies under a mango tree. 00:25:04.50\00:25:07.00 One of our evangelists went to her village 00:25:07.07\00:25:10.81 Zabilama? and told him that he had a message 00:25:10.91\00:25:15.44 from the King of Kings for them for that village 00:25:15.51\00:25:18.95 and that he wanted to talk to the chief about 00:25:19.05\00:25:21.88 this message. Her father said, "Well, I am the 00:25:21.98\00:25:26.19 chief's son, so you can tell me the message." 00:25:26.25\00:25:29.42 He opened his Bible right then and started 00:25:29.52\00:25:32.23 sharing the gospel message with them. He also asked 00:25:32.33\00:25:39.37 if he would be able to share with the whole 00:25:39.47\00:25:41.50 village this message, and he said that that was 00:25:41.60\00:25:44.44 okay. He came and he stayed there for two 00:25:44.47\00:25:48.08 weeks, doing an evangelistic series. Her father and his 00:25:48.14\00:25:52.41 two friends were baptized, then they went to 00:25:52.51\00:25:55.98 our evangelism training school and became evangelists 00:25:56.05\00:25:59.15 themselves. As he was an evangelist, she would go 00:25:59.22\00:26:03.26 out-her father-she would go with him and do 00:26:03.36\00:26:06.39 witnessing. When she was 12 years old, her little 00:26:06.46\00:26:11.93 sister got bit by a poisonous snake, so she 00:26:12.03\00:26:16.17 started crying and her brother said, "Why don't 00:26:16.24\00:26:19.77 we pray instead of cry?" So they prayed, and 00:26:19.87\00:26:24.25 miraculously, her sister did not die! - Woo! 00:26:24.28\00:26:28.55 That's a miracle story, isn't it? - Yeah! Now, 00:26:28.62\00:26:32.22 she's 16. She was this young lady. She was able 00:26:32.29\00:26:36.73 to go to the school herself. - How precious. - She's 00:26:36.83\00:26:40.26 excited about continuing sharing her faith. - Now, 00:26:40.33\00:26:43.70 you said that the Congo is the worst place in the 00:26:43.80\00:26:46.53 world to be a mother. Why? - If you can imagine, 00:26:46.63\00:26:50.91 you want all your children to be able to go to school. 00:26:50.97\00:26:53.51 The culture is to have as many as you can. 00:26:54.88\00:26:57.78 Everybody has large, large families. They're 00:26:57.88\00:27:00.48 poor; they can hardly feed their kids. They 00:27:00.55\00:27:02.58 don't even have enough money. They're all 00:27:02.68\00:27:04.82 malnourished. They have different diseases like 00:27:04.89\00:27:08.76 dysentery, malaria... - Can you imagine being 00:27:08.82\00:27:12.29 a mother and not being able to take your child 00:27:12.39\00:27:14.16 to the doctor when they get sick? - Often, your 00:27:14.26\00:27:16.30 husband is drinking; not all the time. Sometimes, 00:27:16.36\00:27:19.00 he's a hard-working man; but often, he's drinking, 00:27:19.03\00:27:22.90 and as a mother, you're the one working in the 00:27:22.97\00:27:26.27 garden. You're the one working all day long, 00:27:26.34\00:27:29.91 trying to have enough money just to feed your 00:27:29.98\00:27:32.45 kids and enough money for their school tuition. 00:27:32.51\00:27:35.25 The abuse against women there is terrible, as well. 00:27:37.15\00:27:39.52 - That's so sad. Tell us about the church 00:27:39.55\00:27:43.02 planters, 'cause we're going to have to- 00:27:43.06\00:27:44.39 - There's a picture of a boat that can be 00:27:46.16\00:27:47.96 shown on the screen. Two of our church planters 00:27:48.03\00:27:51.03 were coming to our quarterly meeting where 00:27:51.10\00:27:53.84 they tell stories, give reports, and things. 00:27:53.90\00:27:55.87 This boat capsized with them and 300-400 people 00:27:58.47\00:28:03.38 on that boat. 90% of them drowned, but our two 00:28:03.45\00:28:07.75 church planters and their wives and one baby all 00:28:07.85\00:28:10.72 survived that by God's grace. The baby was thrown 00:28:10.82\00:28:15.29 into the river and came up and surfaced right 00:28:15.39\00:28:17.89 in the arms of the mother in the middle of 00:28:17.99\00:28:20.83 the night; couldn't see. God takes care of our 00:28:20.93\00:28:24.83 church planters. They're in remote areas under 00:28:24.93\00:28:27.64 the most difficult circumstances, winning 00:28:27.74\00:28:31.37 souls for Christ. I think that I had a friend who 00:28:31.47\00:28:34.94 said, "All I ever hear is bad news when I hear 00:28:35.04\00:28:37.81 the news from Congo," and I'm sorry to say that 00:28:37.88\00:28:39.91 people are accustomed to bad news. I think that's 00:28:39.98\00:28:42.38 why the message of hope is so precious to them. 00:28:42.45\00:28:46.45 - Amen. Amen. I have to just say one thing: 00:28:46.52\00:28:49.82 it is so amazing, 'cause we're hearing miracle 00:28:49.89\00:28:53.29 after miracle after miracle. Some people in the States 00:28:53.36\00:28:56.56 say, "Well, where are the miracles of God? 00:28:56.67\00:28:59.07 Does He still work miracles?" Because these people 00:28:59.13\00:29:01.94 there are absolutely, totally dependent upon 00:29:02.04\00:29:06.98 God and they trust in Him, He performs miracles. 00:29:07.04\00:29:10.81 Here, we're busy trying to work our own way 00:29:10.91\00:29:13.75 out. I know we've got the others to bring on. 00:29:13.82\00:29:18.45 Keith, if you could, just summarize for us 00:29:18.52\00:29:21.86 what you believe the future is for the work 00:29:21.92\00:29:27.50 in the Congo. - I've seen the Lord work miracles 00:29:27.60\00:29:30.90 in the past. The biggest miracle is that He's 00:29:30.97\00:29:33.44 saving lives for the kingdom, and we expect to see 00:29:33.54\00:29:36.30 that continue. He's opened the doors for the work 00:29:36.40\00:29:39.77 to go forward even in our absence. We've 00:29:39.84\00:29:42.34 chosen, as a family, to continue supporting the 00:29:42.41\00:29:46.85 work in Congo with our donations and sending 00:29:46.92\00:29:52.09 those donations over even if we can't be 00:29:52.12\00:29:53.92 there. We can't sit here in America forever. We 00:29:54.02\00:29:57.03 want to go back to Africa as missionaries, so we're 00:29:57.06\00:29:58.59 going to be doing some work in Chad (where my 00:29:58.66\00:30:02.63 wife's sister and her husband are). - We 00:30:02.70\00:30:06.27 will meet in a moment. - We're excited about 00:30:06.33\00:30:07.97 that. We want to say thank you to all the 00:30:08.04\00:30:09.77 people who've been helpful throughout these 00:30:09.84\00:30:12.04 amazing years. As we thank them for their 00:30:12.14\00:30:15.51 prayers, I want to close with a story about a 00:30:15.58\00:30:18.55 man named Amboyo. This section-we'll close off 00:30:18.58\00:30:21.78 this part of the thing. Amboyo was very angry 00:30:21.85\00:30:27.56 with God because of things that had happened. 00:30:27.62\00:30:30.13 People in his church said, "It's God's will 00:30:30.23\00:30:32.93 that all these things are happening," even 00:30:32.99\00:30:34.80 very negative things, sometimes like family, 00:30:34.86\00:30:38.20 where the parents died and the children were 00:30:38.27\00:30:40.94 orphaned years ago at a similar boat accident- 00:30:41.00\00:30:43.51 the one my dad described. He was very negative 00:30:43.61\00:30:46.78 about God because of these experiences, but when 00:30:46.88\00:30:49.28 our evangelistic team came to the village, he 00:30:49.34\00:30:51.28 came just kind of to heckle them and to give 00:30:51.35\00:30:53.85 them a hard time. But after Amboyo heard the 00:30:53.92\00:30:56.69 message of the origin of evil and realized the 00:30:56.75\00:30:59.22 devil is responsible for all these evil things 00:30:59.29\00:31:02.62 in the world and he realizes that God is 00:31:02.69\00:31:05.09 working to help us make the right choices, to 00:31:05.16\00:31:07.60 help us have a better life, and to save us 00:31:07.66\00:31:10.03 eternally, he found joy. He said, "This makes 00:31:10.10\00:31:15.17 me excited." He became a Christian right then 00:31:15.24\00:31:16.97 and there. - Praise the Lord. - After he'd given 00:31:17.04\00:31:20.68 his life to Jesus and shared that with his 00:31:20.71\00:31:22.61 family, he started going to the villages around 00:31:22.64\00:31:24.88 him. He's started two churches since that 00:31:24.98\00:31:26.95 time, and he hasn't even come to our training 00:31:27.02\00:31:28.92 program yet! He plans to come next year to 00:31:28.98\00:31:31.35 our training program. When I see that happening, 00:31:31.42\00:31:35.32 I see the joy that people have as they find 00:31:35.42\00:31:37.26 salvation, I just want to say thank you to our 00:31:37.29\00:31:40.06 donors-to the people who've been praying 00:31:40.13\00:31:42.26 for us and helped us through the years to 00:31:42.33\00:31:44.03 take this message to the jungle of Congo- 00:31:44.13\00:31:49.00 the Congo River Basin. We continue to appreciate 00:31:49.04\00:31:52.21 the prayers and support that is helping this 00:31:52.24\00:31:55.61 work go forward. - I think that that's what 00:31:55.71\00:31:58.21 we'd like to do right now, because I just 00:31:58.31\00:31:59.95 believe that as you're hearing what the Lord 00:32:00.02\00:32:02.22 is doing through the Congo Frontline Missions, which 00:32:02.28\00:32:05.72 is- this is a 501(c)(3) organization, which means 00:32:05.75\00:32:10.89 it's a non-profit organization. It's 00:32:10.93\00:32:13.09 under the umbrella of Outpost Centers 00:32:13.16\00:32:15.53 International. I just believe that God is 00:32:15.63\00:32:18.53 stirring hearts to help support this mission. If 00:32:18.60\00:32:22.27 you would like to get in touch with Mosier, so 00:32:22.34\00:32:25.14 if you'd like to support this mission, here's 00:32:25.17\00:32:27.44 how you may do so. 00:32:27.54\00:32:28.98 - Congo Frontline Missions 00:32:30.61\00:32:32.35 is dedicated to bringing a message of hope and 00:32:32.38\00:32:35.32 salvation to the worn, torn, Democratic Republic 00:32:35.42\00:32:38.12 of Congo. If you would like to support this 00:32:38.19\00:32:40.49 important work in the heart of the African 00:32:40.56\00:32:42.56 continent, please visit their website. 00:32:42.59\00:32:45.09 CongoFrontlineMissions.org. 00:32:45.19\00:32:50.93 You may call them at area code (507) 884-7246. 00:32:51.03\00:32:57.37 That's (507) 884-7246. Or, write to Outpost 00:32:57.47\00:33:03.88 Centers International Congo Frontline Missions 00:33:03.95\00:33:07.22 5132 Layton Lane in Apison, Tennessee 37302. 00:33:07.28\00:33:14.82 Well, it is so exciting to see what God is doing 00:33:16.12\00:33:18.83 in the Congo-but we're not through yet, because 00:33:18.89\00:33:21.40 we're just going to... We've actually swapped 00:33:21.46\00:33:23.83 out some family members. Keith is still with us, 00:33:23.90\00:33:26.53 but let me introduce- this is Tammy's sister, 00:33:26.60\00:33:30.71 Melody. You're also a nurse, and your husband, 00:33:30.77\00:33:34.68 Jonathan. I started to say John, but it's Jonathan 00:33:34.74\00:33:39.01 Dietrich. Before we jump into the Desert Tree 00:33:39.05\00:33:44.39 Ministry, tell us... Tammy, I know that you 00:33:44.45\00:33:48.62 went to nursing school- excuse me. Melody, you 00:33:48.69\00:33:51.69 went to nursing school with your sister Tammy 00:33:51.76\00:33:54.20 and you both graduated. Who got the idea to 00:33:54.26\00:33:59.27 get into mission work first? Her or you, or 00:33:59.30\00:34:01.57 was it simultaneous? What happened? - Well, we 00:34:01.64\00:34:04.54 both grew up listening to a lot of mission 00:34:04.61\00:34:07.31 stories, so at a young age, I wanted to be a 00:34:07.38\00:34:11.18 missionary. I was getting my nursing for 00:34:11.25\00:34:16.25 that purpose-to go over to a third world country 00:34:16.32\00:34:19.09 to be a missionary. - Praise God. Now, 00:34:19.15\00:34:21.09 Jonathan, what about you? - I grew up in 00:34:21.12\00:34:24.23 a family... My dad was a colporteur. That means 00:34:24.29\00:34:26.59 he went door-to-door selling Bibles and 00:34:26.63\00:34:28.53 literature for 20 years. My grandfather also was 00:34:28.63\00:34:31.83 an administrator for the church in Angola. 00:34:31.90\00:34:34.17 My dad grew up in Angola, Africa, so I 00:34:34.20\00:34:37.17 grew up kind of in a missions mindset. - Amen. 00:34:37.24\00:34:40.48 And you got the call... Melody, were you married 00:34:41.48\00:34:46.25 to Jonathan before you went to Chad, or...how did 00:34:47.42\00:34:51.55 this happen? - Well, actually, I was planning 00:34:51.62\00:34:54.92 ongoing to Congo, but then Keith told me, "You 00:34:54.99\00:34:57.39 should go to Chad first for at least a month or 00:34:57.43\00:35:02.23 so to get some experience, because there's an 00:35:02.30\00:35:04.67 Adventist hospital there." So, I went there to get 00:35:04.73\00:35:08.17 some experience there. - And...you met the love 00:35:08.27\00:35:11.74 of your life? - Yes, I did. - I took credit for 00:35:11.77\00:35:15.18 that, because I told her to go to Chad. She 00:35:15.28\00:35:18.31 and my wife Tammy both wanted to come to Congo 00:35:18.38\00:35:21.78 to help us with our medical work we were 00:35:21.88\00:35:23.72 getting started, but it worked out. As soon 00:35:23.79\00:35:26.69 as Tammy and I were going over after we 00:35:26.76\00:35:28.56 got married, she headed to Chad then got married 00:35:28.69\00:35:31.59 the following week. - Jonathan, please... 00:35:31.66\00:35:34.33 I just will confess my ignorance. Tell me about 00:35:34.43\00:35:38.53 Chad, because I don't know much about Chad. 00:35:38.63\00:35:40.87 - All right. Chad is right in the middle of the 00:35:40.94\00:35:44.21 continent of Africa, or right in the center 00:35:44.27\00:35:46.74 there. - North of the Congo? - North of the 00:35:46.78\00:35:49.18 Congo. The upper part of Chad is in the Sahara 00:35:49.24\00:35:51.88 Desert. The part where we are is southern, and 00:35:51.95\00:35:56.28 it's called, "Sub-Saharan," so we get some rain. 00:35:56.38\00:35:58.95 For about 6 months of the year, there's no 00:35:59.05\00:36:01.26 rain. - Wow. - It's one of the least developed 00:36:01.32\00:36:04.16 countries in the world. A lot of similarities with 00:36:04.23\00:36:06.03 the Congo. There's one of the pictures I have. 00:36:06.09\00:36:10.00 It shows a house. It has a lot of mud brick, thatched roof... 00:36:10.07\00:36:17.67 Very primitive. No electricity, no running 00:36:17.77\00:36:20.28 water... People are living much like they did a 00:36:20.38\00:36:22.94 thousand years ago. They're still farming 00:36:23.04\00:36:26.48 with animals. It's very primitive. It gets very 00:36:26.55\00:36:30.59 hot there, as well, during the hot season. In the 00:36:30.69\00:36:33.89 house sometimes, it's hot as 110 degrees in 00:36:33.96\00:36:36.02 the shade. The rest of the year, it gets up 00:36:36.09\00:36:38.76 into the upper 90s a lot. - Sign me up. No! 00:36:38.83\00:36:41.50 [laughter] Just kidding. - There's a lot of 00:36:41.56\00:36:44.27 challenges to living there. - What is the 00:36:44.30\00:36:47.77 work- what year did you go over and start 00:36:47.84\00:36:50.87 the Desert Tree Ministry? - I went over in 2009 00:36:50.97\00:36:55.74 and worked with another organization for a while 00:36:55.81\00:36:58.81 as a pilot mechanic, then we started Desert 00:36:58.88\00:37:01.82 Tree Ministry toward the end of 2013. - Okay. 00:37:01.88\00:37:05.35 Tell us what you're doing with Desert Tree 00:37:05.42\00:37:08.29 Ministry. - All right. We have several areas 00:37:08.36\00:37:12.93 of focus. One is similar to Congo; we're doing 00:37:13.03\00:37:17.83 layman training. Let me explain to you a little 00:37:17.93\00:37:21.90 bit why we're doing that (just in brief). The 00:37:21.97\00:37:25.21 population of Chad is 13 million, and the 00:37:25.31\00:37:28.44 Adventist church membership is about 3,000. For 00:37:28.51\00:37:35.98 that, there's about 12 pastors. 12 pastors is 00:37:36.02\00:37:40.42 simply not enough to reach that number of 00:37:40.56\00:37:43.63 people, so we believe that the layman training 00:37:43.73\00:37:46.49 is very important to train the members how to 00:37:46.56\00:37:49.16 be active, to help- - You're training them 00:37:49.20\00:37:51.57 how to share the gospel, how to evangelize. - And 00:37:51.60\00:37:54.94 often, teaching them how to even have 00:37:55.00\00:37:57.17 a personal relationship. A lot of them, it may be 00:37:57.24\00:37:59.87 a member of the church, but they don't know 00:37:59.94\00:38:01.28 what that means, even. So that's one of our 00:38:01.31\00:38:04.68 areas of focus. - Absolutely. Now, you're also doing 00:38:04.75\00:38:08.22 a publishing work where you're publishing in 00:38:08.28\00:38:09.88 their own language. - Yes. We have publishing 00:38:09.98\00:38:13.72 work. We're publishing tracks and books, and 00:38:13.79\00:38:18.06 mostly in the language of French. We're 00:38:18.19\00:38:21.00 operating out of a 20-foot container. We've 00:38:21.10\00:38:24.17 put mattresses in there because of the heat; we 00:38:24.23\00:38:26.53 have to have some sort of insulation. We installed 00:38:26.60\00:38:28.20 an air conditioner and we have laser printers. 00:38:28.24\00:38:33.38 One of the biggest print jobs that we do is 00:38:33.48\00:38:37.45 the Sabbath school quarterlies for the 00:38:37.55\00:38:39.21 Union. The Union is five countries kind of 00:38:39.31\00:38:42.42 grouped together for organizational purposes 00:38:42.55\00:38:44.79 for the church. We're publishing the Sabbath 00:38:44.85\00:38:48.62 school quarterlies for the Union out of this 00:38:48.69\00:38:50.63 container. - Okay. You said there was no 00:38:50.69\00:38:52.59 electricity, so this is all run off a generator, 00:38:52.69\00:38:55.26 or...? - Generators. We have a big one and 00:38:55.33\00:38:57.47 several small ones that we work with. - Okay. 00:38:57.53\00:38:59.10 Then you've got these boxed up and they're 00:38:59.20\00:39:03.37 shipping it out. Do they take it out to village 00:39:03.44\00:39:06.11 to village? How do you do this? - Well, the 00:39:06.17\00:39:09.08 Sabbath school quarterlies are shipped with our 00:39:09.14\00:39:10.58 land cruiser. For the other tracks and books 00:39:10.65\00:39:14.72 and smaller things, we package those up into 00:39:14.82\00:39:16.65 boxes. When people come to our trainings, we send 00:39:16.72\00:39:20.46 boxes and literature out with them. - Wonderful. 00:39:20.49\00:39:23.32 Chad isn't... I mean, I know it's poor, 00:39:23.43\00:39:28.66 underdeveloped... But is it as dangerous as 00:39:28.76\00:39:34.47 the Congo? - Chad is seen as a more politically 00:39:34.54\00:39:38.71 stable country in the region. There are still 00:39:38.77\00:39:42.04 issues-especially in the cities. I mean, any big 00:39:42.11\00:39:44.71 city in the world has issues. We praise the 00:39:44.81\00:39:48.92 Lord for relative peace right now in the country, 00:39:49.02\00:39:51.99 so we want to do as much as we can while we can. 00:39:52.05\00:39:54.09 - Amen. So Melody, you're involved with the medical 00:39:54.16\00:39:57.66 work there, or...? What are you doing with Desert 00:39:57.79\00:40:01.86 Tree Ministries? - Well, at first, when I came 00:40:01.96\00:40:05.40 over there, I worked at the hospital and I really 00:40:05.47\00:40:08.34 enjoyed that. Then, at the same time, I was 00:40:08.40\00:40:11.87 getting to know Jonathan. The next year, in 2010, 00:40:11.97\00:40:16.75 we got married. After that, I was home a lot, 00:40:16.85\00:40:21.55 trying to help with lots of projects around there. 00:40:21.62\00:40:25.25 We were doing construction and various 00:40:25.29\00:40:27.52 things. Now, we have two children. We have 00:40:27.56\00:40:32.36 a 5-year-old, Gideon, and a 3-year-old, Liliana. 00:40:32.43\00:40:35.83 - Do you live in a home with no electricity? 00:40:35.93\00:40:38.33 - At first, we lived in what we called a hut, 00:40:40.84\00:40:43.74 but it was pretty nice. Now, we live in a bigger 00:40:43.84\00:40:48.78 house, and we have solar panels, batteries, 00:40:48.84\00:40:51.08 a fridge, and freezer, so we're very blessed. 00:40:51.15\00:40:55.22 - Amen. What is it like for women in Chad? 00:40:55.28\00:40:59.52 - It's very difficult there, too; not quite 00:40:59.59\00:41:04.03 as bad as Congo, probably, but they're extremely 00:41:04.09\00:41:07.43 poor people. The women are bought for... When 00:41:07.50\00:41:13.44 you want a wife, you buy a wife. They're often 00:41:13.54\00:41:16.81 seen as a possession to take care of the kids, 00:41:16.91\00:41:20.98 to cook... There's isn't a good relationship 00:41:21.04\00:41:24.01 almost all the time between the husband and wife. 00:41:24.05\00:41:27.32 It's more like a servant, so I feel very sorry for 00:41:27.42\00:41:31.15 them. - Oh, amen. Well, at least you can model 00:41:31.22\00:41:33.69 hopefully what God intended marriage to be 00:41:33.76\00:41:37.89 like. - Oftentimes, you'll actually see Congo 00:41:37.93\00:41:40.13 and Chad on the same bottom 5 of the worst 00:41:40.20\00:41:43.77 places to be a mother or the worst places for 00:41:43.83\00:41:46.90 a woman to live, bottom 5 as far as poverty. 00:41:46.94\00:41:50.47 There's a lot of times I'll see Chad in 00:41:50.54\00:41:53.71 the news when I'm looking at Congo news 00:41:53.78\00:41:55.44 because we fit them into the same category 00:41:55.51\00:41:56.98 with some of the challenges. - So, 00:41:57.05\00:41:58.65 Jonathan, when you- we showed a couple of 00:41:58.75\00:42:01.28 pictures of your training and it was men. Are you 00:42:01.38\00:42:03.52 planning on training the women as well, or 00:42:03.59\00:42:05.59 would that be accepted in Chad? - Yes. We 00:42:05.65\00:42:09.62 would like to do some of the training for 00:42:09.69\00:42:11.29 women. In fact, we've had several women come 00:42:11.39\00:42:15.30 through various trainings; but most of them are 00:42:15.36\00:42:18.17 men. There's a practical reason for that. Women 00:42:18.23\00:42:21.47 are busy at home with all the kids. They simply 00:42:21.54\00:42:24.14 can't leave home for a month or two to come. 00:42:24.21\00:42:27.58 So if we did a women's training, we would have 00:42:27.68\00:42:29.18 to do one shorter. Another way that we 00:42:29.24\00:42:31.48 do include the women is we actually travel out 00:42:31.58\00:42:33.92 to the villages and do shorter trainings- 00:42:34.05\00:42:36.75 anywhere from two days to two weeks. Then, the 00:42:36.82\00:42:39.89 men and women can come, 'cause the women, they 00:42:39.92\00:42:41.72 just come for the day, then they can go back 00:42:41.79\00:42:43.12 to their homes to cook and wash laundry and all 00:42:43.16\00:42:44.93 that. - Give us a little of the makeup of Chad. 00:42:45.03\00:42:49.33 I mean, are we looking at- are they a nomadic 00:42:49.40\00:42:52.13 people? What do they do for a living? And what is 00:42:52.23\00:42:56.24 their religious backgrounds? - The main religion is 00:42:56.30\00:43:01.38 Muslim... Islam, and the lower part is Christianity- 00:43:01.44\00:43:08.22 is what they claim. - The southern part of 00:43:08.32\00:43:11.49 the country. - Yep. Then, of course, it's not very 00:43:11.55\00:43:15.62 pure. There's a lot of animist beliefs mixed 00:43:15.72\00:43:17.53 in all of that. - And explain for our audience, 00:43:17.59\00:43:22.30 in case someone-we mentioned this in the 00:43:22.36\00:43:24.47 first part-if they don't understand what animistic 00:43:24.57\00:43:26.57 is. - Okay. Animistic... Basically, you don't have 00:43:26.67\00:43:29.94 a view of God as the Creator. It's spirits. 00:43:30.01\00:43:36.14 "I have to appease the spirits." There's the rain 00:43:36.24\00:43:38.91 god, the fire god... There's these different- 00:43:39.01\00:43:42.32 you have to make sacrifices and you're always trying 00:43:42.42\00:43:44.99 to do something to make them happy or to please 00:43:45.09\00:43:48.36 them, so it's kind of a discouraging life- 00:43:48.42\00:43:51.09 discouraging way to live life. - How do you 00:43:51.16\00:43:53.73 reach Muslims who- I mean, reaching Christians 00:43:53.80\00:43:59.83 may be (or people who are calling themselves 00:43:59.90\00:44:01.87 "Christians") teaching them greater truths. 00:44:01.94\00:44:04.31 That seems a lot easier. But how are you reaching 00:44:04.37\00:44:07.38 the Muslims? - We're learning how to do that, 00:44:07.48\00:44:10.95 because in the past, we've been working more 00:44:11.01\00:44:12.78 with the Christian population. We've been 00:44:12.85\00:44:14.78 praying to the Lord, and He sent us a man. 00:44:14.85\00:44:17.92 We'll share more of his story really soon. His 00:44:17.99\00:44:19.65 name is JJ. He was from a Muslim background, 00:44:19.75\00:44:25.36 and now he's working with us. We'd like to 00:44:25.43\00:44:28.36 share some of his story. - Go ahead! - All right. 00:44:28.43\00:44:31.43 Maybe Melody can share. - Yeah. He grew up in 00:44:31.50\00:44:35.40 a nomadic Muslim home. As a child, he knew 00:44:35.50\00:44:40.31 how to walk hundreds and hundreds of miles, 00:44:40.41\00:44:42.84 following the cows, searching for grass. 00:44:42.94\00:44:45.61 This was his life. He didn't know anything 00:44:45.68\00:44:48.85 about Christianity until he was- - We brought a picture. 00:44:48.92\00:44:52.65 Don't we have a picture of him with the cows? 00:44:52.75\00:44:54.49 - Yes. There's a picture of the cows. - This 00:44:54.56\00:45:00.93 was how they traveled. They have lots of cattle; 00:45:01.00\00:45:05.07 that's what they do for a living. When he became 00:45:05.13\00:45:08.90 a young adult, he decided he wanted to 00:45:09.00\00:45:13.68 find out a little bit about Christianity. So 00:45:13.74\00:45:16.54 he went to a church and he listened from the 00:45:16.64\00:45:19.11 outside of the church to the service. After a 00:45:19.21\00:45:22.32 few weeks, he talked with the pastor. He 00:45:22.38\00:45:25.15 learned about how Jesus had died for his sins. 00:45:25.25\00:45:27.86 He was just so touched, and he decided he wanted 00:45:27.92\00:45:32.13 to be a follower of Jesus. - Amen! - So 00:45:32.19\00:45:35.80 after this, he went back to his home. He had a 00:45:35.86\00:45:38.57 wife and two kids. His father-in-law was so 00:45:38.63\00:45:42.27 angry with him for becoming a Christian 00:45:42.34\00:45:44.97 that he took his wife away from him and 00:45:45.04\00:45:50.15 gave her to another Muslim man and said, 00:45:50.21\00:45:53.48 "I will not let my daughter be married 00:45:53.55\00:45:56.72 to a pagan!" That was his view. He also tried 00:45:56.82\00:46:00.09 to kill JJ a number of times. One time, he 00:46:00.16\00:46:04.23 had a wooden club that he lifted above his 00:46:04.26\00:46:07.40 head, and he was going to bring it right down 00:46:07.50\00:46:10.57 on JJ's head. It just got stuck in the air. 00:46:10.67\00:46:14.57 He could not bring it down. He tried and 00:46:14.64\00:46:18.44 tried with all his might, and he just 00:46:18.54\00:46:21.34 started trembling. JJ, he was fearless. 00:46:21.41\00:46:23.95 He just stood there and he said, "You cannot 00:46:24.05\00:46:25.48 hurt me 'cause God is protecting me." And 00:46:25.58\00:46:29.22 finally, the father-in-law just had to give up. 00:46:29.28\00:46:31.55 On another occasion, they were out in the 00:46:31.62\00:46:33.96 bush. Actually, JJ was probably following the 00:46:34.06\00:46:37.06 cows, and all of a sudden, his father-in-law shows 00:46:37.13\00:46:39.59 up with a bow and arrow. He pulls it and he's 00:46:39.66\00:46:44.10 going to shoot JJ, but he pulls it back and he 00:46:44.17\00:46:47.37 cannot let go. With all his strength, he cannot 00:46:47.44\00:46:50.24 let go of that arrow. Literally, for 30 00:46:50.31\00:46:53.21 minutes, he tried and tried to shoot JJ. JJ 00:46:53.27\00:46:57.35 just stood there. He said, "You cannot hurt 00:46:57.45\00:46:59.08 me 'cause God is protecting me." Finally, 00:46:59.18\00:47:01.68 the father-in-law fell to the ground in 00:47:01.75\00:47:03.42 exhaustion after trembling. JJ just 00:47:03.49\00:47:07.06 kindly walked up to him, picked him up, 00:47:07.12\00:47:09.59 and said, "God forgive you." It was really 00:47:09.66\00:47:14.26 hard for him. Very sadly, the father-in-law did 00:47:14.33\00:47:17.97 poison the 6-year-old son of JJ and he died. 00:47:18.07\00:47:22.34 JJ was away on a trip and he came back and 00:47:22.44\00:47:25.74 found out about this. The father-in-law took 00:47:25.84\00:47:28.51 his baby and threw it in the thorn bushes. JJ 00:47:28.58\00:47:32.81 rescued his baby and he fled. He could not 00:47:32.88\00:47:35.72 stay there any longer. He had stayed, trying 00:47:35.82\00:47:38.05 to get his wife, but he realized he had to leave. 00:47:38.15\00:47:40.86 He walked for three days, carrying his baby 00:47:40.92\00:47:43.86 that had no clothes on, and finally, he found 00:47:43.99\00:47:47.93 a missionary family in N'Djamena. This 00:47:48.03\00:47:50.67 family kindly watched over his son while he 00:47:50.73\00:47:54.54 went to Nigeria and became an evangelical 00:47:54.60\00:47:57.87 pastor. After that, he came back and got 00:47:57.94\00:48:02.08 his baby again. - Praise God. So, he is now a 00:48:02.14\00:48:06.45 pastor? Is it his heart's mission to reach 00:48:06.51\00:48:14.42 the Muslims? - Mhm. - Yeah. So now, years 00:48:14.52\00:48:18.36 later, he came to our village (which was 00:48:18.46\00:48:20.30 where we came into contact with him). He 00:48:20.40\00:48:22.06 went through our training course, he 00:48:22.16\00:48:23.70 learned about all the truths that he had 00:48:23.80\00:48:25.70 questions about but nobody had been able 00:48:25.80\00:48:27.14 to explain to him. Recently, he was 00:48:27.17\00:48:30.24 baptized with his wife and his nephew and 00:48:30.34\00:48:33.81 his nephew's wife. Their ministry now is reaching 00:48:33.88\00:48:36.81 out to their people. He has a medical 00:48:36.88\00:48:39.31 mystery with the people who come to the hospital. 00:48:39.41\00:48:41.95 He translates for them and kind of helps them 00:48:42.08\00:48:44.79 out. He's also going once or twice a month 00:48:44.89\00:48:46.86 on the motorbike, over 200 kilometers, out- 00:48:46.92\00:48:50.19 they're nomadic people, so he has to go out 00:48:50.29\00:48:52.56 and find where they are. Beginning to work 00:48:52.63\00:48:55.20 with them. We have a picture, also, of the 00:48:55.30\00:49:00.07 little church that's been built. It's a 00:49:00.14\00:49:02.77 little grass structure; nothing much yet, but 00:49:02.87\00:49:06.17 it's a start. The Adventists work among this tribe. 00:49:06.24\00:49:09.44 It's very exciting to us to see he has this 00:49:09.54\00:49:14.05 passion to reach his people for... - And I 00:49:14.12\00:49:16.45 think- is he in this picture? We'll put that 00:49:16.52\00:49:18.22 up now. - Yeah. There's a picture of the huts 00:49:18.32\00:49:21.49 with a group of people there. We can see our 00:49:21.59\00:49:24.93 family. - Is this him? - Yes. That's JJ and 00:49:24.99\00:49:28.23 his wife and some of their kids, then our 00:49:28.30\00:49:30.63 family, of course. We were just there a few 00:49:30.70\00:49:32.20 months ago and got to see this and actually 00:49:32.30\00:49:34.94 worship with them together on Sabbath 00:49:35.00\00:49:36.50 morning. - Praise the Lord. Okay. Well, we're 00:49:36.57\00:49:38.81 getting close to the end of the program. We 00:49:38.84\00:49:40.41 want to put your address up. Barry, 00:49:40.48\00:49:43.58 now, you and Tammy are... - Oh... Keith. - I mean 00:49:43.65\00:49:46.95 Keith. Excuse me. Barry's your daddy. I'll get 00:49:47.05\00:49:49.45 confused here. Keith, you and Tammy will 00:49:49.52\00:49:52.19 be going to Chad to join Melody and Jonathan 00:49:52.29\00:49:56.02 in a number of months just because you can't 00:49:56.09\00:49:59.83 stand not to be working and reaching the people 00:49:59.89\00:50:02.70 in Africa, right? Well, we just want to thank 00:50:02.76\00:50:05.33 you so much for what you're doing. But what 00:50:05.37\00:50:07.97 we'd like to do is, if you would like to support 00:50:08.07\00:50:11.21 the work in Chad for the Desert... What is it? 00:50:11.27\00:50:16.41 Desert...Tree!
