I want to spend my life 00:00:01.50\00:00:07.14 Mending broken people 00:00:07.57\00:00:12.27 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.34\00:00:17.98 Removing pain 00:00:18.65\00:00:23.45 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.89\00:00:29.06 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:30.06\00:00:34.03 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.60\00:00:39.67 Mending broken people 00:00:40.37\00:00:44.67 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.64\00:00:51.01 Mending broken people 00:00:51.45\00:00:55.88 Hello. I'm Shelley Quinn, and we welcome you 00:01:11.00\00:01:13.64 to 3ABN Today. We're so glad that you've 00:01:13.70\00:01:16.17 tuned in again. I think you're going to 00:01:16.24\00:01:19.27 be very inspired today by this story. You 00:01:19.34\00:01:22.98 know, in Matthew 28 verses 19 and 20, 00:01:23.08\00:01:30.05 Jesus tells His disciples, "Go therefore and make 00:01:30.12\00:01:34.26 disciples of all the nations, baptizing them 00:01:34.36\00:01:37.56 in the name of the Father and the Son and the 00:01:37.63\00:01:40.20 Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe 00:01:40.26\00:01:43.00 all things that I have commanded 00:01:43.06\00:01:46.57 you." We call this the Great Commission. 00:01:46.63\00:01:49.74 As Danny Shelton always says, "What 00:01:49.80\00:01:53.54 God asks of us is that we come to the 00:01:53.64\00:01:56.78 foot of the cross, then we go and 00:01:56.85\00:02:00.42 share the story, and the blessing is on 00:02:00.45\00:02:03.79 the go." You know, some people, in a 00:02:03.82\00:02:06.72 moment of "spiritual heat," they become 00:02:06.79\00:02:09.82 passionate about sharing the gospel 00:02:09.89\00:02:11.83 for this long. But then there are some 00:02:11.86\00:02:14.53 people who really obey this command and 00:02:14.60\00:02:18.60 they make a spiritual commitment to a 00:02:18.70\00:02:22.70 lifestyle of discipling others, and such is 00:02:22.80\00:02:27.38 our guest today. Before I introduce 00:02:27.44\00:02:30.28 him, I just want to take this opportunity 00:02:30.35\00:02:32.71 to thank you from the bottom of our hearts 00:02:32.81\00:02:35.48 for your prayers and your love and your 00:02:35.58\00:02:37.99 financial support, because it is YOU 00:02:38.09\00:02:41.12 that makes this ministry possible-not only to 00:02:41.26\00:02:45.99 reach around the world, the lost and the 00:02:46.09\00:02:49.36 suffering, but to showcase ministries 00:02:49.43\00:02:52.83 like that of today, which is Riverside 00:02:52.90\00:02:56.14 Farm Institute, and our special guest is Alan 00:02:56.20\00:02:59.24 Knowles, who is the director of outreach 00:02:59.31\00:03:02.11 for Riverside Farm Institute. If you're joining 00:08:40.28\00:08:42.12 us just a moment late, our special guest 00:08:42.18\00:08:44.52 today is Alan Knowles. He is the director 00:08:44.55\00:08:47.09 of outreach for Riverside Farm 00:08:47.16\00:08:49.52 Institute in Zambia. Before we get into 00:08:49.62\00:08:55.26 the ministry that God called you to, 00:08:55.36\00:08:58.27 let's get to know Alan just a little bit. 00:08:58.33\00:09:01.50 Did you grow up in a Christian home? 00:09:01.60\00:09:04.14 Tell us a little of your story. 00:09:04.21\00:09:05.84 My mom and dad were Seventh-Day Adventists 00:09:05.87\00:09:07.78 when I was born, and I'm born and raised 00:09:07.88\00:09:10.98 Seventh-Day Adventist. - Well, you weren't 00:09:11.05\00:09:13.42 BORN a Seventh-Day Adventist; you had 00:09:13.48\00:09:15.62 to become one. But you were reared in a 00:09:15.68\00:09:18.12 Seventh-Day Adventist Christian home. Okay, 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.32 so when did- sometimes, I think that people 00:09:20.36\00:09:25.39 who've been brought up in this movement 00:09:25.46\00:09:29.36 take things so much for granted, and 00:09:29.43\00:09:32.70 sometimes, it's kind of like they feel 00:09:32.73\00:09:34.80 they've inherited it. When did God become 00:09:34.84\00:09:38.14 real to you? When did Christ become real 00:09:38.24\00:09:40.44 to you? - I think it was after I had 00:09:40.54\00:09:43.31 married. I mean, God was real to me 00:09:43.38\00:09:46.05 as a young person growing up, but after 00:09:46.11\00:09:49.32 I got married, my wife and I went to 00:09:49.38\00:09:52.09 a missionary training school in Southern 00:09:52.15\00:09:54.76 New Hampshire. It was there, I met some 00:09:54.82\00:09:57.93 folks who really pointed me to the 00:09:57.99\00:10:00.40 service aspect of Christianity. - Praise 00:10:00.46\00:10:04.50 God. Now- - And turned my life 00:10:04.53\00:10:06.50 in that direction. - All right; so you 00:10:06.60\00:10:08.80 were in this training school, I believe you 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.51 said, for 3 years. - That's right. - Were 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.58 you planning on overseas mission 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.24 work, or was this more local? - When 00:10:16.34\00:10:19.28 I was a young kid in grade school, 00:10:19.38\00:10:21.65 I remember writing a little report that 00:10:21.78\00:10:23.75 I wanted to be a missionary, you know? 00:10:23.82\00:10:25.85 Didn't even really know what that was, except 00:10:25.95\00:10:28.72 for, maybe, some missionaries would 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.29 come to church or something. It was at 00:10:30.36\00:10:34.46 that training school we were learning 00:10:34.53\00:10:35.96 to be missionaries at home. Learning 00:10:36.06\00:10:38.77 to do cooking schools- five-day plans back then- 00:10:38.80\00:10:42.27 missionary- raise up a church in a dark 00:10:42.34\00:10:46.34 county; that kind of thing. That was our 00:10:46.41\00:10:48.58 intent. - But God had other plans, 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.25 didn't He? - Had other plans. - Okay, 00:10:51.35\00:10:53.68 so tell us- how did- what was your 00:10:53.75\00:10:56.52 profession, first of all? - I'm a builder, 00:10:56.58\00:10:58.59 carpenter, by trade. - All right. You are 00:10:58.65\00:11:02.59 married, have two little boys by now; 00:11:02.66\00:11:05.19 when did you get the call to Zambia? 00:11:05.26\00:11:07.90 - I would say we got the call-a call in 1983, 00:11:07.93\00:11:12.13 which was a year after we had been to the 00:11:12.20\00:11:14.80 mission training school. My wife and 00:11:14.87\00:11:17.14 I looked at each other and we said, 00:11:17.21\00:11:18.54 "No way." [laughter] Then, we spent our 00:11:18.57\00:11:23.48 training time there. Probably a year 00:11:23.55\00:11:25.55 later, my wife said, "What do you think, 00:11:25.61\00:11:27.22 if we should go overseas?" I said, 00:11:27.32\00:11:29.95 "No... No." And then maybe a 00:11:30.02\00:11:32.19 few months later, I would say, "Well, 00:11:32.25\00:11:33.59 I've been thinking about it, Pauline. 00:11:33.66\00:11:35.72 Maybe we should go." She would say, "No, 00:11:35.79\00:11:38.39 I think it'd be safer to have my kids 00:11:38.46\00:11:40.46 stay here." - As the boys were little, 00:11:40.50\00:11:43.03 weren't they? - Then in, probably, 1984 00:11:43.10\00:11:46.94 (and a half), we both got the same 00:11:47.00\00:11:49.84 idea together and we said, "There's a 00:11:49.90\00:11:52.11 call. There's a somebody- there's 00:11:52.17\00:11:55.24 a need in Zambia." My brother-in-law 00:11:55.28\00:12:00.05 had been there, and he was calling me 00:12:00.12\00:12:02.78 every so often, "You should come." 00:12:02.85\00:12:06.86 - But we know where the real call came 00:12:06.92\00:12:09.16 from. [laughs] Okay, so the boys were 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.73 2 and 6 years old when you- 00:12:11.83\00:12:14.30 - 3 and 6. - 3 and 6 when you went to 00:12:14.36\00:12:17.03 Zambia in 1985. Tell us about- what was 00:12:17.10\00:12:23.20 your first impression of Riverside Farm 00:12:23.27\00:12:26.61 Institute? Tell us- just kind of give us 00:12:26.68\00:12:29.31 a little of the history of that ministry. 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.71 - Well, we didn't really know where 00:12:31.81\00:12:34.88 Zambia was at the beginning of that 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.19 call. We researched it and did a good 00:12:37.25\00:12:41.66 study of where we were going, but we 00:12:41.72\00:12:44.66 weren't ready for anything, and when we 00:12:44.73\00:12:46.19 got there, life was completely different 00:12:46.29\00:12:49.70 than we ever expected it. In fact, I remember 00:12:49.76\00:12:53.17 on my desk, I had a calendar and I 00:12:53.23\00:12:56.20 had marked days left before my term was 00:12:56.30\00:13:01.24 up. I remember it going from a thousand 00:13:01.31\00:13:03.58 days left to 999 days left. Imagine. 00:13:03.65\00:13:07.95 I was waiting to go home, but my 00:13:08.02\00:13:11.55 wife said, "No... No. We've been called 00:13:11.62\00:13:14.36 here. Don't even count." And it didn't 00:13:14.46\00:13:16.36 take long. I don't remember any more 00:13:16.42\00:13:18.23 numbers. My wife was my inspiration 00:13:18.29\00:13:20.76 to stay. God turned my eyes away from 00:13:20.83\00:13:25.37 how I felt to the needs that were around. 00:13:25.43\00:13:29.10 - Yeah. So, Riverside Farm- let's just 00:13:29.20\00:13:33.58 back up before you tell us about the 00:13:33.64\00:13:35.24 history there. Tell us about Zambia in 00:13:35.34\00:13:38.68 general. 'Cause, obviously, this was 00:13:38.75\00:13:41.58 a shock to your system. You weren't 00:13:41.68\00:13:43.79 quite prepared for this. - When 00:13:43.85\00:13:45.19 we came in 1985, Zambia was in a 00:13:45.22\00:13:47.66 one-president-for-life political system, and 00:13:47.72\00:13:56.40 it wasn't long before that changed. We were 00:13:56.46\00:13:59.23 thankful for that change. But during that time, 00:13:59.30\00:14:01.84 the economy was very poor. We weren't 00:14:01.97\00:14:05.54 able to buy very much in town. We 00:14:05.64\00:14:08.14 just ate what we grew, basically. 00:14:08.24\00:14:11.48 A few necessities were available in 00:14:11.58\00:14:15.18 town, but sometimes they weren't available. 00:14:15.25\00:14:16.89 It was a rough economy at that time, and 00:14:16.99\00:14:20.02 poverty was all around. Being a 00:14:20.06\00:14:23.26 Third World Country, or a developing 00:14:23.32\00:14:25.06 country, it had some growing to do. 00:14:25.13\00:14:29.26 - What were the people like? - Well, Zambia is 00:14:29.36\00:14:33.64 known as a friendly, warm country, and 00:14:33.74\00:14:37.04 for sure, we experienced that from the people 00:14:37.11\00:14:40.31 we worked with, people that lived 00:14:40.38\00:14:43.55 around Riverside Farm- we just enjoyed their 00:14:43.58\00:14:47.32 openness, their happiness, they're- 00:14:47.38\00:14:51.19 I wouldn't say content with poverty, but they 00:14:51.25\00:14:55.06 understood that happiness is more 00:14:55.12\00:14:58.76 important than prosperity. And 00:14:58.83\00:15:02.93 not that they had a big choice in the 00:15:03.00\00:15:04.83 matter, but they had a choice whether to 00:15:04.93\00:15:06.77 be happy or not. They were an inspiration 00:15:06.84\00:15:09.97 to me. - So, give us the history of 00:15:10.04\00:15:14.08 Riverside Farm Institute, 'cause it's 00:15:14.14\00:15:16.51 been around quite a while. - It has. In 00:15:16.61\00:15:19.11 short, in 1974, an American doctor 00:15:19.18\00:15:24.62 who lived on the property there-or 00:15:24.69\00:15:27.42 in Zambia-an American Adventist self-supporting 00:15:27.49\00:15:30.59 doctor wanted to have a training 00:15:30.66\00:15:34.10 school for Zambians: evangelism and 00:15:34.16\00:15:36.87 agriculture mixed together. So, he 00:15:36.97\00:15:39.73 called for help, and 5 families from Wildwood 00:15:39.80\00:15:44.97 came over to Foster's Farm (it was called 00:15:45.01\00:15:50.95 Foster's Farm at that time-J.G. Foster was 00:15:51.01\00:15:53.38 the owner. During those early days, they were 00:15:53.45\00:15:58.02 chopping out wilderness and started growing 00:15:58.09\00:16:01.39 food in training and started a school 00:16:01.46\00:16:04.13 of evangelism for Zambians. - Praise 00:16:04.19\00:16:06.96 God. So, when we're talking about a school 00:16:07.03\00:16:12.60 of evangelism... First of all, what is- the 00:16:12.67\00:16:17.51 majority of the people in Zambia- 00:16:17.57\00:16:19.97 what is their religious practice? - There's 00:16:20.01\00:16:23.38 a lot of demon possession and demon worship 00:16:23.48\00:16:29.28 that goes on there. - A lot of spiritualism. 00:16:29.38\00:16:31.99 - Christianity is the religion of the 00:16:32.05\00:16:36.76 country. Pronounced that way, "We're a 00:16:36.83\00:16:40.40 Christian nation," but it's mixed with 00:16:40.43\00:16:42.46 spiritualism. - So, you've got the 00:16:42.53\00:16:46.13 witch doctors... This type of thing? - We do. 00:16:46.20\00:16:48.70 And the curses, the anti-curses, remedies 00:16:48.80\00:16:53.41 for curses... People live in a lot of fear 00:16:53.48\00:16:57.68 and interpretation of what's going to happen 00:16:57.75\00:17:01.88 to them and their children and how to 00:17:01.95\00:17:04.12 care for them. Part of our education is to 00:17:04.15\00:17:08.06 teach them God's way. God has a way of 00:17:08.09\00:17:11.79 healing, God has a way of living, and so 00:17:11.86\00:17:15.63 those things have to be adapted to their 00:17:15.66\00:17:18.50 lifestyle, but to turn their eyes from the 00:17:18.57\00:17:24.84 scary evil of Satan's work to the 00:17:24.91\00:17:28.64 Heavenly Father, that He's the One 00:17:28.74\00:17:30.81 who can take care of us, He's the One 00:17:30.91\00:17:32.88 who's going to deliver us, He's the 00:17:32.95\00:17:34.98 One who will heal our children and 00:17:35.05\00:17:36.69 teach them and save them one day in an 00:17:36.79\00:17:39.92 eternal kingdom. That's the hope 00:17:39.99\00:17:41.89 that they need. - You know, Alan, I 00:17:41.92\00:17:44.19 just have to say this to everyone 00:17:44.26\00:17:46.49 at home. When you live in a developed 00:17:46.53\00:17:51.17 country, we don't recognize, sometimes- 00:17:51.23\00:17:54.57 people will roll their eyes if you talk about 00:17:54.60\00:17:57.94 demonic oppression and possession, but 00:17:58.01\00:18:01.44 every missionary I've talked with, everyone 00:18:01.54\00:18:04.95 I know who lives in Africa or Haiti or 00:18:05.01\00:18:09.18 some of these places, it is very real, 00:18:09.28\00:18:12.25 it can be very powerful, and it's a force to 00:18:12.35\00:18:14.92 be dealt with. But we just praise God. 00:18:14.99\00:18:17.46 1 John 4:4, "Greater is He who's in us than 00:18:17.53\00:18:20.06 he who is in the world." So, this 00:18:20.16\00:18:24.33 began, but what is the ministry? I mean, 00:18:24.43\00:18:28.90 here, 1974, we've got these pioneering 00:18:28.97\00:18:32.97 families over there; but what is the 00:18:33.01\00:18:34.58 ministry of Riverside Institute? - Of course, 00:18:34.64\00:18:38.91 the ministry would center around preparing 00:18:38.95\00:18:43.42 people for Jesus to come. So, to do 00:18:43.52\00:18:46.22 that, there are several ways, of course; we 00:18:46.29\00:18:48.32 know that from our educational system 00:18:48.39\00:18:51.83 here in America. Even our goal as Adventists 00:18:51.93\00:18:55.26 to train them means to give them something 00:18:55.33\00:18:58.57 in their hands, give them something in their 00:18:58.70\00:19:00.94 minds so that they can use that to both 00:19:01.00\00:19:04.17 prepare themselves and help others to see 00:19:04.27\00:19:06.74 that this life is temporary. Jesus 00:19:06.84\00:19:11.05 is coming. This is what we need to be 00:19:11.11\00:19:13.45 ready for. - Okay. So, give us what kind of 00:19:13.52\00:19:17.22 programs you're running there. - We 00:19:17.29\00:19:19.12 have four major classes and they run 00:19:19.15\00:19:21.12 in 5-month seminars. Evangelism training is 00:19:21.19\00:19:25.36 our highlight. That's a 5-month program to 00:19:25.39\00:19:29.10 learn how to do evangelism, but also 00:19:29.16\00:19:33.60 how to run churches. There's only- let's 00:19:33.64\00:19:38.04 put it this way. A pastor might have 40 00:19:38.17\00:19:41.14 congregations to take care of, so the elders 00:19:41.24\00:19:45.71 in the churches- - And these are 00:19:45.78\00:19:47.85 Adventist Christians. - The elders 00:19:47.92\00:19:51.75 in these churches basically are the pastors 00:19:51.82\00:19:54.06 and have to run and organize the church 00:19:54.12\00:19:56.12 and encourage people, so they need training 00:19:56.22\00:19:58.13 how to do that-how to be a pastor without 00:19:58.19\00:20:00.96 being a pastor to help the pastor. 00:20:01.06\00:20:03.83 So, our training teaches them how 00:20:03.93\00:20:05.93 to be church administrators, local church administrators, 00:20:06.00\00:20:09.40 and how to present the gospel to their 00:20:09.47\00:20:13.04 congregations on a weekly basis. So, 00:20:13.07\00:20:16.04 evangelism. Then, we have lifestyle educator, 00:20:16.14\00:20:19.45 which takes people from thinking that 00:20:19.55\00:20:24.02 white bread and soda is the best thing we 00:20:24.99\00:20:27.99 can get for our lunch, and to go to the witch 00:20:28.09\00:20:32.03 doctor to get our children better to 00:20:32.09\00:20:33.90 teach them good food, good health 00:20:33.96\00:20:36.56 habits, and how you can, with simple 00:20:36.67\00:20:40.30 remedies, help your children to overcome 00:20:40.37\00:20:43.61 this common, simple- remedies. So, lifestyle 00:20:43.67\00:20:47.24 educator. Then, we have a tailoring 00:20:47.31\00:20:49.84 class that teaches ladies how to sew 00:20:49.91\00:20:53.95 and gives them a trade. They sew on treadle 00:20:54.02\00:20:58.65 sewing machines. - Aw, my grandmother 00:20:58.72\00:21:01.52 had one of those. That's how I learned 00:21:01.59\00:21:03.09 to sew. - Because there's not electricity 00:21:03.16\00:21:04.49 in many places where they'll go, so that 00:21:04.53\00:21:07.10 will help them, and they can support their 00:21:07.16\00:21:09.76 family, make clothes for their children, 00:21:09.86\00:21:11.60 and so forth like that. We teach agriculture, 00:21:11.63\00:21:15.90 or gardening, so that people can take 00:21:15.97\00:21:18.47 that back home, do their evangelism in 00:21:18.57\00:21:21.24 church or whatever, but support their 00:21:21.31\00:21:22.78 family and grow better gardens than just 00:21:22.88\00:21:24.91 the traditional methods that are used around 00:21:25.01\00:21:27.75 the country. - Okay, but where do- you 00:21:27.82\00:21:30.45 said take it back home, so it's not just 00:21:30.52\00:21:32.02 people in the local area; it's people 00:21:32.09\00:21:34.26 from all over Zambia. - That's right. - How 00:21:34.29\00:21:36.46 do your students learn of this and 00:21:36.49\00:21:40.00 where do they stay if they come for 5 months? 00:21:40.06\00:21:42.40 - Well, we have dormitories on 00:21:42.46\00:21:43.83 the campus, and we take 12 students 00:21:43.87\00:21:47.07 in each of those classes, so there's 00:21:47.14\00:21:48.64 about 50 students each 5-month seminar. 00:21:48.70\00:21:52.04 They come from around the whole country. Our 00:21:52.11\00:21:56.88 pioneer Bible workers are out in 00:21:56.95\00:22:00.62 the far reaches, and they do a lot of the 00:22:00.68\00:22:02.25 sending students to us. We also, 00:22:02.32\00:22:05.52 on the weekends, we send our- 00:22:05.55\00:22:07.52 - So, would you say that- I mean, you've 00:22:07.62\00:22:09.06 got a boarding school, in a sense, but this 00:22:09.12\00:22:12.63 is not for high school and under. 00:22:12.69\00:22:15.36 This is for people who have already 00:22:15.43\00:22:17.20 received their- - Passed high school. 00:22:17.30\00:22:19.10 A lot of the young people have finished 00:22:19.13\00:22:23.30 high school and are waiting for funding 00:22:23.41\00:22:25.64 for college or something like that. In between 00:22:25.74\00:22:27.38 them, I come to Riverside and get 00:22:27.48\00:22:29.44 some good health education, evangelism, 00:22:29.51\00:22:32.38 or trade. - So Alan, how many people 00:22:32.45\00:22:37.19 are in staff at Riverside Farm? 00:22:37.29\00:22:40.19 - In our supervisor role is about 25 00:22:40.26\00:22:45.86 who live on campus- 25 Zambian families 00:22:45.93\00:22:49.00 along with the 3 missionary families. 00:22:49.06\00:22:52.63 - Okay, but I know you have several 00:22:52.70\00:22:54.60 hundred acres. Who's farming this? - We 00:22:54.70\00:22:56.91 have a commercial farm and it takes 00:22:57.01\00:22:58.97 a lot of hand labor, so there's a hundred 00:22:59.04\00:23:01.51 workers who come in every day to do 00:23:01.58\00:23:04.65 the farmwork from hoeing, planting, 00:23:04.71\00:23:09.22 harvesting, and sending foods to the market. 00:23:09.28\00:23:13.52 - Okay, so we see a picture here. It's 00:23:13.59\00:23:15.39 a beautiful property. - It's 500 acres 00:23:15.42\00:23:18.89 that are irrigated. You can see we 00:23:18.93\00:23:22.00 have center pivots there. We're growing 00:23:22.03\00:23:24.03 wheat and soybeans in these areas, then 00:23:24.10\00:23:28.70 our campus- you can see the river there 00:23:28.80\00:23:30.77 in the picture. That's where we get our 00:23:30.87\00:23:33.07 water for irrigation. The Lord has blessed. 00:23:33.14\00:23:36.04 This property is one of the closest farms 00:23:36.14\00:23:40.28 to the capital city, so our crops are 00:23:40.35\00:23:45.05 easily sold. - These are banana trees, 00:23:45.12\00:23:47.69 right? - These are banana trees. - We 00:23:47.76\00:23:49.22 just saw the wheat. What is the yield- 00:23:49.32\00:23:51.29 what kind of a yield do you get there? 00:23:51.36\00:23:53.60 - There are 500 tons in our- I think it's 100 00:23:53.63\00:23:59.63 acres, so... I don't know how to convert 00:23:59.67\00:24:02.00 that to bushels and acres and stuff, but 00:24:02.07\00:24:04.67 we grow commercial wheat crop every 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.61 year. - And then you sell this and those 00:24:07.68\00:24:11.45 funds help support... - That's right; pay 00:24:11.55\00:24:13.82 the teachers and support the students. 00:24:13.88\00:24:17.09 The students only pay a small tuition 00:24:17.15\00:24:18.79 that covers their food. The education 00:24:18.92\00:24:21.76 program is available for any Zambian who 00:24:21.82\00:24:24.39 wants to come. - Mmkay. I think we had a few 00:24:24.46\00:24:27.16 more pictures of some of your classes. Let's 00:24:27.20\00:24:29.40 look at those. - Might just add on the bananas; 00:24:29.46\00:24:31.87 that's our biggest crop. We have, probably, 00:24:31.93\00:24:35.07 about 7 million bananas a year we sell. - Wow. 00:24:35.10\00:24:39.87 Now, this, obviously, is the tailoring class. 00:24:39.94\00:24:42.78 - Yeah. You can see the treadle machines 00:24:42.88\00:24:44.58 there, and these ladies come for 5 00:24:44.68\00:24:46.18 months. When they come, most of them 00:24:46.28\00:24:48.18 don't know anything about sewing. When 00:24:48.28\00:24:50.09 they're done, they can actually make 00:24:50.15\00:24:51.49 a suit for their husbands or their 00:24:51.59\00:24:53.66 fathers. - So, this gives them a means 00:24:53.72\00:24:55.82 of livelihood, if you will. - All the 00:24:55.92\00:24:58.49 children wear school uniforms, so they 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.26 can do a little business at home 00:25:00.33\00:25:01.80 making school uniforms. Mhm, 00:25:01.83\00:25:04.40 simple things like that. - Now, what 00:25:04.43\00:25:05.93 is this picture? - Our evangelism 00:25:06.00\00:25:07.57 class teaches young men the skills of, 00:25:07.64\00:25:12.24 like I said, to be administrators in 00:25:12.31\00:25:16.75 churches. These men will go out into the 00:25:16.78\00:25:21.02 far reaches and help the local pastors 00:25:21.08\00:25:23.45 in places where the pastors can't even 00:25:23.49\00:25:26.59 reach. Some of them have to walk for 00:25:26.65\00:25:28.19 two days to get to where these Bible 00:25:28.22\00:25:31.46 workers are actually stationed and are 00:25:31.49\00:25:33.50 working. - It's such dedication. Do you 00:25:33.56\00:25:35.60 call these your pioneer Bible workers? - This 00:25:35.63\00:25:37.67 is our pioneer Bible workers. We have 50 00:25:37.73\00:25:39.23 of them in the far reaches (I said) 00:25:39.33\00:25:41.20 of Zambia that we support. - And how 00:25:41.30\00:25:44.21 do you sup- do they get sponsored? - We 00:25:44.31\00:25:46.51 are looking for sponsors for these young men 00:25:46.57\00:25:50.75 at $100 a month. That takes care of just 00:25:50.81\00:25:54.55 their ministry. They still have to farm 00:25:54.65\00:25:58.75 themselves and to support their families 00:25:58.85\00:26:02.12 and send their kids to school. This is a 00:26:02.19\00:26:03.83 ministry support that we give them. - That's 00:26:03.89\00:26:07.10 amazing. So, when you've got 50 out 00:26:07.20\00:26:11.40 there (now), these are the men who are 00:26:11.43\00:26:13.80 helping do church plants, overcoming- now, tell 00:26:13.90\00:26:19.77 me if this is true, because I have 00:26:19.84\00:26:21.31 heard this. The particular Sunday 00:26:21.38\00:26:26.41 denomination is there that- it has quite 00:26:26.51\00:26:31.02 a good membership; but in that particular 00:26:31.05\00:26:35.06 denomination, they don't worry about if 00:26:35.12\00:26:38.99 people are still using the witch doctors. 00:26:39.03\00:26:41.16 They just want them to come to church 00:26:41.20\00:26:42.53 then go do whatever they want to do. 00:26:42.56\00:26:44.10 Right? So, when you, then- when your people are 00:26:44.13\00:26:47.47 going out, we're teaching them that 00:26:47.57\00:26:49.50 the witch doctor is- you're on the wrong 00:26:49.57\00:26:54.24 side of power. Right? How difficult is that 00:26:54.34\00:26:57.95 to overcome? - I'd say it's very 00:26:58.01\00:27:00.92 difficult. It's generation after 00:27:00.98\00:27:03.49 generation, Satan has done his work 00:27:03.65\00:27:07.22 to create in the whole thought pattern 00:27:07.29\00:27:11.89 that he's the one that helps you. 00:27:11.96\00:27:14.93 So, it's a struggle, but these men are 00:27:15.00\00:27:17.07 determined. Their lives with their 00:27:17.10\00:27:20.10 wives and their families are the 00:27:20.17\00:27:22.00 example for them. So, that's the challenge 00:27:22.04\00:27:25.07 that they have- to be examples that 00:27:25.14\00:27:27.68 Jesus is the One who takes care of their 00:27:27.78\00:27:30.28 children and takes care of their 00:27:30.35\00:27:31.68 diseases-not the witch doctor. - Amen. 00:27:31.71\00:27:34.45 - It's difficult. - So, when they go 00:27:34.55\00:27:37.89 out and they're preaching, they're 00:27:38.02\00:27:42.52 having great success as far as baptism. 00:27:42.66\00:27:45.69 What- I think we've got some more pictures 00:27:45.79\00:27:48.33 that we'd like to show you of them- 00:27:48.36\00:27:50.00 the pioneer Bible workers who are 00:27:50.07\00:27:52.77 preaching. Then what happens after they 00:27:52.83\00:27:57.47 preach? - It's two things that go on 00:27:57.57\00:28:00.14 with evangelism. One is there's a need for a 00:28:00.18\00:28:05.01 church building, and the other is a need 00:28:05.11\00:28:08.78 to educate the children. So, in the past, 00:28:08.85\00:28:13.62 you can see baptisms are in simple, humble 00:28:13.69\00:28:17.66 places and hundreds are baptized each 00:28:17.73\00:28:19.56 evangelistic meeting. The children are 00:28:19.59\00:28:25.43 going to come. That school building that 00:28:25.50\00:28:28.40 you just saw, One-Day School, has been a 00:28:28.47\00:28:30.94 means of evangelism. The children can get 00:28:31.01\00:28:35.14 educated in Seventh-Day Adventist schools. 00:28:35.18\00:28:37.71 That's going to be a tool that will, in 00:28:37.75\00:28:42.28 time, be the strength of our church.- Okay; 00:28:42.38\00:28:46.29 so these men are going out and beating the 00:28:46.35\00:28:47.89 bushes, if you will, or they're out in 00:28:47.92\00:28:49.66 the bush. They, obviously, are having- 00:28:49.72\00:28:52.63 the Lord is blessing in great success. 00:28:52.69\00:28:55.23 When you start this one-day school- 00:28:55.26\00:28:59.03 I mean, when you say "one-day school," 00:28:59.13\00:29:00.54 you're talking about a school that's actually 00:29:00.57\00:29:01.94 constructed in one day. - That's right. 00:29:02.00\00:29:04.97 - Then, how long, though- I mean, what... 00:29:05.04\00:29:07.64 Is that an automatic thing? "Okay, we've 00:29:09.08\00:29:11.65 got all these people baptized. We need a 00:29:11.75\00:29:13.65 school." How does this happen? - Well, 00:29:13.68\00:29:15.42 funding is needed for building schools. 00:29:15.48\00:29:18.55 I'd just like to say thank you to 3ABN 00:29:18.62\00:29:21.02 and its listeners for the support that 00:29:21.12\00:29:23.32 they have been. We were able to put 00:29:23.39\00:29:25.33 13 one-day preschools. The government kind 00:29:25.36\00:29:30.87 of controls grades 1 and up, but the 00:29:30.97\00:29:34.94 preschool- our church can actually own and 00:29:35.00\00:29:38.51 operate and use Seventh-Day Adventist 00:29:38.57\00:29:40.64 teachers to teach the young people in 00:29:40.68\00:29:42.51 preschool. So, 3ABN had sponsored 12 of 00:29:42.58\00:29:46.55 these schools that we built (for these 00:29:46.65\00:29:48.75 pioneers especially). The foundation of 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.15 children- education is the foundation 00:29:51.19\00:29:54.52 for eternity. - Amen. Amen. But then these 00:29:54.62\00:29:57.69 schools kind of become centers of influence- 00:29:57.76\00:30:00.23 centers of evangelism, right? 'Cause if you 00:30:00.30\00:30:03.23 can reach the kids... - That's it. You can 00:30:03.30\00:30:05.13 reach the parents you've interested. 00:30:05.20\00:30:06.97 So with that, the next step is, there's 00:30:07.04\00:30:10.14 a congregation after the baptism. They 00:30:10.21\00:30:12.41 need a place to worship. We have a picture 00:30:12.51\00:30:15.88 here of what kind of a worship place 00:30:15.94\00:30:20.05 we would find in a typical area in 00:30:20.15\00:30:22.12 Zambia. A rundown; grass-thatched. Rain 00:30:22.22\00:30:26.79 comes in, everyone has to move to the 00:30:26.86\00:30:28.96 sides of the church or whatever, and 00:30:29.06\00:30:31.29 the people are eagerly waiting for 00:30:31.36\00:30:35.00 a new church. - Yeah. - The team will come. 00:30:35.10\00:30:40.97 These Bible workers will give us a call, 00:30:41.04\00:30:43.61 and our team from Riverside will come 00:30:43.67\00:30:45.24 as we get sponsorship for one-day churches. 00:30:45.34\00:30:48.34 I'd just like to show a little picture 00:30:48.38\00:30:51.08 here of how our team works. We have a 00:30:51.15\00:30:55.52 video roll that we can put on right now. When 00:30:55.58\00:31:00.06 we arrive at the site, the church members 00:31:00.12\00:31:03.36 are there to help us and they take 00:31:03.43\00:31:06.63 instruction. The church goes up in 00:31:06.70\00:31:09.50 no time. One interesting story: we had a 00:31:09.56\00:31:12.73 young man who was going by in the morning 00:31:12.80\00:31:15.07 with his bicycle and he saw our truck 00:31:15.17\00:31:16.91 there. He drove by, looking and wondering 00:31:17.01\00:31:20.31 what these people were going to do 00:31:20.38\00:31:21.91 there. At noon time, when he came back 00:31:21.94\00:31:23.68 on his bicycle, he was just pedaling by and 00:31:23.78\00:31:27.08 he looked. There's the church building already 00:31:27.15\00:31:30.75 up. He's looking at it as he's driving, 00:31:30.82\00:31:33.52 and he crashed into the side of the road 00:31:33.56\00:31:35.52 and fell right over, got up, and said, 00:31:35.59\00:31:37.66 "Where did that come from?" - You know, 00:31:37.69\00:31:39.76 it is amazing. The one-day church project 00:31:39.83\00:31:42.26 is amazing. Praise God for the work that 00:31:42.36\00:31:46.74 they're doing around the world. But this is 00:31:46.80\00:31:49.37 something that we see the local people are 00:31:49.44\00:31:52.61 excited to come out and help you, because 00:31:52.67\00:31:54.58 they so want a place where they can be 00:31:54.68\00:31:59.65 proud to go to worship and something 00:31:59.71\00:32:01.35 that honors the Lord, right? - And they 00:32:01.45\00:32:03.12 become owners of it as they work for it. 00:32:03.18\00:32:05.95 - I think you brought us a picture- what it 00:32:05.99\00:32:08.82 looked like when it was finished. Quite a 00:32:08.89\00:32:11.03 difference. That's lovely. - That replaced 00:32:11.09\00:32:14.13 that old scraggly- looking church where 00:32:14.23\00:32:17.03 they had to duck when the rains came. Now, 00:32:17.10\00:32:20.74 they have a place of influence; connects 00:32:20.80\00:32:23.61 them to the outside world, is an influence 00:32:23.67\00:32:26.81 in their village, maybe the first tin roof 00:32:26.91\00:32:30.68 in the whole village. You know, not that 00:32:30.78\00:32:34.38 we want people to come for the loaves 00:32:34.48\00:32:36.89 and fishes, we say, but if people will 00:32:36.99\00:32:40.22 come to church because you have a tin roof, 00:32:40.32\00:32:44.73 it gives an opportunity for them to hear 00:32:44.76\00:32:47.10 the gospel then. - Amen. - So, it's a tool. 00:32:47.13\00:32:50.13 It's one of the many tools of evangelism. 00:32:50.20\00:32:52.47 Such a blessing, that program. - But, 00:32:52.53\00:32:55.24 now, some of the evangelism- we have 00:32:55.30\00:32:57.77 friends that are missionaries in Zambia, 00:32:57.84\00:33:00.98 as well. I know that there's a lot of people 00:33:01.04\00:33:04.68 who live along the rivers, so tell us 00:33:04.71\00:33:08.05 about that outreach. - Some of our Bible 00:33:08.08\00:33:11.72 workers, like I said, live places where 00:33:11.82\00:33:13.89 the pastors can't get, and one of 00:33:13.96\00:33:15.66 these in particular lives on the Zambezi 00:33:15.72\00:33:18.33 River, upstream. They really have quite a 00:33:18.43\00:33:23.13 challenge to go to church. During part 00:33:23.23\00:33:27.00 of this year, there's flooding in the area. 00:33:27.07\00:33:31.31 The river floods for part of the year and 00:33:31.41\00:33:33.34 they have to use canoes. They actually 00:33:33.41\00:33:34.84 live out there on little high-elevated 00:33:34.94\00:33:38.08 areas, and the river is around their houses. 00:33:38.15\00:33:40.95 They'll come out in the rainy season 00:33:41.02\00:33:43.89 and come out of their house, and there's 00:33:43.92\00:33:46.09 the river- it's around them, so 00:33:46.19\00:33:48.72 they have to step into their canoe. 00:33:48.79\00:33:50.33 We'll have a picture of one of their churches 00:33:50.43\00:33:52.73 here that, in the rainy season, this is 00:33:52.83\00:33:56.06 what their church looks like. They 00:33:56.16\00:33:59.53 can come out of their house and paddle to 00:33:59.63\00:34:02.70 church, and they won't find anybody 00:34:02.77\00:34:04.67 there because who's going to come to 00:34:04.71\00:34:06.07 church when you can't even get into the... 00:34:06.17\00:34:09.74 - Yeah. Just stay in your canoe. - So, 00:34:09.81\00:34:13.11 the next picture we'll show is when they do 00:34:13.18\00:34:15.45 come. They're standing in their canoes, 00:34:15.52\00:34:19.12 wondering- and they have to be careful 00:34:19.15\00:34:22.32 when they come out of their houses into 00:34:22.36\00:34:23.73 their canoes. There's crocodiles that are 00:34:23.79\00:34:26.06 cruising along in their little villages 00:34:26.13\00:34:28.76 here. You can see the raised mounds 00:34:28.86\00:34:32.37 and all around it. Everywhere around... 00:34:32.40\00:34:34.34 So, here, the people are saying, "Look at 00:34:34.40\00:34:38.41 our church!" when we came to visit there. 00:34:38.47\00:34:40.44 We really are squeezed and we can't even 00:34:40.48\00:34:45.45 worship there in some parts of the area, 00:34:45.51\00:34:47.52 so we called our team from Riverside to 00:34:47.55\00:34:49.75 come and help us with a one-day church. 00:34:49.82\00:34:53.05 When we arrive off the riverbanks, 00:34:53.15\00:34:58.33 the church members are there, helping us 00:34:58.43\00:35:01.53 carry all the materials. - Even the mommas. 00:35:01.66\00:35:05.13 - Even the mommas there from the 00:35:05.20\00:35:06.53 cradle roll department have their helping 00:35:06.57\00:35:10.71 hands to carry them. There's a ton of 00:35:10.77\00:35:14.24 materials that need to be carried. People 00:35:14.31\00:35:17.68 can't carry them all, so what do we have? 00:35:17.75\00:35:20.18 No cars, no jeeps, no trucks; the oxen 00:35:20.25\00:35:25.55 are doing the work here. - So it probably 00:35:25.65\00:35:28.42 takes- it is long to get the materials 00:35:28.46\00:35:31.79 down the river and unloaded as it is 00:35:31.86\00:35:35.13 to build the church, 'cause when we say 00:35:35.20\00:35:37.13 "one-day church," they literally go up 00:35:37.17\00:35:39.23 in a day. - It took us a day to go up the 00:35:39.33\00:35:42.84 river, unload it, and get all the materials 00:35:42.90\00:35:45.64 on site. Then the next day, church was up. 00:35:45.71\00:35:50.51 A miracle. It was the first tin roof in 00:35:50.58\00:35:52.55 this whole area, in the village. This village 00:35:52.58\00:35:57.35 was then a place where it's a sacred 00:35:57.39\00:36:02.12 village. This is our evangelism. You can 00:36:02.16\00:36:05.29 see- - Now, that isn't the 00:36:05.33\00:36:06.66 same place, is it? - That's the same 00:36:06.73\00:36:08.53 place. - That's the same place, so it 00:36:08.56\00:36:10.17 looks like a new church now. That's 00:36:10.20\00:36:12.50 during the rainy season! - In the 00:36:12.57\00:36:14.50 dry season, it's dry and sandy. It's a 00:36:14.60\00:36:16.97 mile from the river to where the church 00:36:17.07\00:36:18.91 is. In the rainy season, you have to 00:36:18.97\00:36:20.91 use a canoe to get to church. We call 00:36:20.98\00:36:23.11 that the Canoe Church. - Wow. That's amazing. 00:36:23.18\00:36:26.21 - So, people will then come with their 00:36:26.31\00:36:28.28 canoes to church if they have a dry place 00:36:28.35\00:36:30.15 where they can sit and worship. - So, 00:36:30.22\00:36:33.02 when you think about some of the stories 00:36:34.42\00:36:37.69 you've heard, or the people you've met, 00:36:37.76\00:36:39.79 because- you and your wife went there with 00:36:39.89\00:36:42.66 your two little babies, 3 and 6 in 1985, and 00:36:42.76\00:36:47.60 I think during that time, you've only 00:36:47.70\00:36:49.54 come home for a short period of time while 00:36:49.60\00:36:52.41 your boys were finishing high 00:36:52.44\00:36:54.18 school, right? - High school- that's 00:36:54.24\00:36:55.58 right. - Now, what- is there anyone 00:36:55.64\00:36:59.68 in particular that- I want two questions. 00:36:59.75\00:37:04.42 #1) How has this changed you, and 00:37:04.49\00:37:07.26 what is one of the greatest changes? 00:37:07.32\00:37:09.36 If you can look back, can you think 00:37:09.42\00:37:10.99 of somebody's story that just will never 00:37:11.06\00:37:14.36 leave you- it's just indelible? - Well, 00:37:14.40\00:37:18.30 you can't help but, being changed, when every 00:37:18.37\00:37:21.50 day, you wake up and go out and there's 00:37:21.57\00:37:25.14 a huge need in front of you. Oftentimes, 00:37:25.24\00:37:30.25 in this society, where we live here in 00:37:30.31\00:37:32.38 America, you don't see a need. You get up 00:37:32.48\00:37:38.19 and you go to work, and you need to go 00:37:38.25\00:37:39.69 to work. But people come to our door 00:37:39.75\00:37:43.69 on a regular basis and ask, "Can you 00:37:43.76\00:37:49.63 help us with food for today?" My wife 00:37:49.70\00:37:55.40 and I look at each other on a regular 00:37:55.50\00:37:57.44 basis and say, "How can we say no?" 00:37:57.47\00:38:00.41 And for a small, little penance of help, 00:38:00.48\00:38:04.18 they turn around and go, "Thank you! 00:38:04.25\00:38:08.58 Praise God! You've saved us for today." 00:38:08.68\00:38:11.82 And it may be that, tomorrow, they have 00:38:11.92\00:38:14.86 some other opportunity; but today is what 00:38:14.92\00:38:17.16 they needed something for. You know, we have 00:38:17.23\00:38:20.56 times in Zambia where the rain doesn't fall 00:38:20.63\00:38:23.77 and there's hunger. I had a family that 00:38:23.87\00:38:27.34 walked for 12 miles 'cause they heard 00:38:27.40\00:38:31.14 there was somebody who was willing to 00:38:31.17\00:38:33.81 help at Riverside. They came and knocked 00:38:33.91\00:38:36.88 on our door, my wife answered, and-I 00:38:36.98\00:38:41.98 don't know. Sometimes, you get overwhelmed. 00:38:42.05\00:38:44.72 She said, "Well, go see my husband." 00:38:44.82\00:38:47.16 Well, they came and found me, and I was 00:38:48.39\00:38:50.33 busy doing something. They sat down behind 00:38:50.43\00:38:55.43 me while I was busy. I said, "Just a minute." 00:38:55.46\00:38:57.33 Then I get up and say, "Can I help you?" 00:38:58.80\00:39:00.87 They just said, "We don't have any food. 00:39:01.00\00:39:03.74 We haven't eaten for three days and we 00:39:03.81\00:39:06.78 walked all the way here." I said, "Well, 00:39:06.81\00:39:09.81 I don't know," and I had something else to 00:39:09.88\00:39:12.28 do, and so I went. I didn't pay attention 00:39:12.35\00:39:16.32 to this still, small voice, and I was 00:39:16.38\00:39:18.95 busy doing something again. I turned around; 00:39:19.09\00:39:20.82 there they were again right behind 00:39:20.89\00:39:22.22 me. They weren't going to give up. 00:39:22.26\00:39:23.76 Three times, I had to move around the 00:39:23.86\00:39:25.63 campus. As an administrator, you 00:39:25.69\00:39:28.10 have to get around and keep things going. 00:39:28.20\00:39:30.20 They just followed me and said, "We're 00:39:30.30\00:39:31.97 not going home until we get some help." 00:39:32.03\00:39:33.90 - Bless their hearts. - It struck me. God's 00:39:33.94\00:39:38.67 trying to tell me something here. 00:39:38.74\00:39:40.21 I'm too busy doing "His work" to just 00:39:40.24\00:39:47.68 listen to people and their today 00:39:47.78\00:39:51.39 need. I said, "No. I'm going to help 00:39:51.45\00:39:54.06 them," so I sent them to a certain 00:39:54.12\00:39:56.62 person who could help them with 00:39:56.73\00:39:58.06 some bananas and some cornmeal-that's 00:39:58.09\00:40:02.33 a basic thing-some vegetables. They were 00:40:02.40\00:40:05.43 actually leftover vegetables, 'cause 00:40:05.53\00:40:07.80 we had sold all the first quality ones. 00:40:07.87\00:40:10.21 They had about 5 sacks of food. There 00:40:10.27\00:40:13.94 was a grandfather, a mother and a 00:40:14.04\00:40:16.28 father, and 5 children. They took those 2 00:40:16.34\00:40:22.45 sacks of food, and they said, "We can 00:40:22.52\00:40:24.85 go home now." - You know, even when we're 00:40:24.92\00:40:27.89 dedicated to the Lord- I mean, we're not perfect. 00:40:27.96\00:40:31.29 There are times that it takes us a little 00:40:31.36\00:40:33.13 while to respond to the Lord's voice. I 00:40:33.19\00:40:36.23 wish we could all learn to just 00:40:36.26\00:40:38.63 respond soon. I pray that all the time. 00:40:38.70\00:40:41.74 "Lord, make me sensitive to Your still, small 00:40:41.80\00:40:43.91 voice." But we can get so busy doing 00:40:44.01\00:40:47.68 good that we can be ignoring an opportunity 00:40:47.74\00:40:51.55 that the Lord brings to us; but praise God 00:40:51.65\00:40:54.78 that the Fruit of the Holy Spirit is love, 00:40:54.82\00:40:57.69 joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, 00:40:57.75\00:40:59.89 gentleness, meekness, and self-control. So, 00:40:59.95\00:41:03.09 when you see some of these Bible workers- 00:41:03.16\00:41:08.60 I mean, 50, and at $100 a month - 00:41:10.83\00:41:15.64 we've got $5,000 right there a month. Are 00:41:15.70\00:41:19.51 they all sponsored, or you're looking for 00:41:19.57\00:41:21.04 sponsors today? - We're looking for sponsors 00:41:21.14\00:41:23.45 today. We have a good number of them 00:41:23.55\00:41:26.95 sponsored, and others are at their homes 00:41:27.12\00:41:29.98 unsponsored doing their Bible work as they 00:41:30.05\00:41:33.49 can afford to. They need help with the 00:41:33.56\00:41:36.36 evangelistic tools: a bicycle to get 00:41:36.46\00:41:39.63 around, literature to pass out, a pen; 00:41:39.69\00:41:44.80 they need to buy a pen so they can help 00:41:44.90\00:41:46.74 mark the Bible studies. I mean, simple little 00:41:46.84\00:41:49.87 things that are, to us- pens are on every 00:41:49.94\00:41:53.07 desk. But for them, a pen is a special 00:41:53.17\00:41:55.64 thing in their pocket. - Yeah. We're so 00:41:55.71\00:42:01.58 spoiled, aren't we? - We don't know. 00:42:01.65\00:42:03.25 - All right. So, and then the other thing 00:42:03.32\00:42:05.59 is, how many one-day churches- and 00:42:05.65\00:42:09.66 as I said, these are churches where 00:42:09.72\00:42:12.73 everything comes to you- all the materials, 00:42:12.79\00:42:14.83 and you must appreciate this as a builder, 00:42:14.90\00:42:16.90 because they come all precut; they come ready 00:42:17.00\00:42:20.57 to erect. Literally, these are 00:42:20.64\00:42:23.51 going up. Not just in Zambia, but around 00:42:23.57\00:42:26.41 the world, they can be erected in one 00:42:26.44\00:42:29.28 day. Not always the brick on the outside, 00:42:29.34\00:42:31.78 but the other... So, how many of those 00:42:31.88\00:42:34.85 are you wanting to build? - We've 00:42:34.95\00:42:39.12 built around 400 of them in Zambia already. 00:42:39.19\00:42:43.43 - Wow. - In my estimation, and with 00:42:43.49\00:42:45.36 the conference leaders' estimation, there 00:42:45.43\00:42:47.73 are thousands that are needed. These are 00:42:47.80\00:42:49.90 small congregations and the rural areas 00:42:49.96\00:42:52.30 that still need help. We have matching 00:42:52.37\00:42:56.47 funds right now (and the kits on-site) for 00:42:56.64\00:43:00.14 a hundred churches. $2,000 matching fund 00:43:00.18\00:43:04.08 for every thousand dollars that we raise. 00:43:04.15\00:43:07.05 So, $1,000 would put up one of these kits 00:43:07.15\00:43:10.85 for one of these Bible workers. 00:43:10.92\00:43:12.79 - Unbelievable. So, let me repeat that. 00:43:12.85\00:43:14.42 You're looking to fund 100 churches. 00:43:14.49\00:43:17.13 If you raise 1,000, you have matching 00:43:20.56\00:43:23.23 funds for 2,000. So there are basically 3,000 00:43:23.30\00:43:26.30 a piece, so that's what you're looking 00:43:26.37\00:43:29.17 for. - And with that, we can put the 00:43:29.24\00:43:31.34 name of your Sabbath school class on the 00:43:31.37\00:43:33.84 church, or the name of your church or 00:43:33.91\00:43:37.11 your group if you would like that. As part of 00:43:37.18\00:43:39.88 the donation, it would be a memorial 00:43:39.95\00:43:41.58 to your group in Zambia until Jesus 00:43:41.68\00:43:45.39 comes. - Amen. Amen! Well, what we want 00:43:45.45\00:43:48.72 to do is, we're going to put- you know, 00:43:48.76\00:43:51.73 I believe with all of my heart- I have 00:43:51.79\00:43:55.53 to tell you; let me back up. When I was 00:43:55.63\00:43:58.47 a brand new Adventist- I'd only been an 00:43:58.53\00:44:00.84 Adventist for about 2 months, and I went 00:44:00.87\00:44:06.24 to ASI. As a matter of fact, that's wehre 00:44:06.34\00:44:10.55 I met Danny Shelton. He had me on that 00:44:10.61\00:44:14.58 eveming sharing my testimony, because 00:44:14.68\00:44:16.55 I told him that 3ABN was instrumental in 00:44:16.65\00:44:20.36 bringing me into the church. I found that 00:44:20.42\00:44:23.56 when I finally started watching- I found that 00:44:23.59\00:44:26.09 everything God was teaching me, 3ABN 00:44:26.13\00:44:28.96 was teaching. So the point is, I'm at ASI. 00:44:29.06\00:44:34.47 I am meeting all of these wonderful people- 00:44:34.54\00:44:40.28 these wonderful ministries, and I 00:44:40.34\00:44:43.24 remember that someone told me about Riverside 00:44:43.35\00:44:46.41 Farm Institute. You were actually under the 00:44:46.45\00:44:48.88 umbrella of Outpost Centers International, 00:44:48.95\00:44:53.76 which is a 501c3. They have so many wonderful 00:44:53.82\00:44:59.66 ministries. Everybody kept telling me about 00:44:59.76\00:45:05.00 Riverside Farm! I thought, "This is so 00:45:05.10\00:45:09.67 amazing." I heard about you when I was a 00:45:09.77\00:45:12.34 brand new Adventist. The work there has 00:45:12.41\00:45:15.24 impressed so many people. We want you 00:45:15.31\00:45:19.45 to have the opportunity. I believe that God 00:45:19.51\00:45:23.18 works in such a way that there's times 00:45:23.28\00:45:26.96 when we hear something 00:45:27.02\00:45:28.36 and it's not just a pluck of the 00:45:28.46\00:45:29.99 heartstring but we know God is saying, 00:45:30.06\00:45:32.66 "I want you to help support this." They're 00:45:32.76\00:45:35.66 looking for sponsors for some of their 00:45:35.76\00:45:39.47 pioneer Bible workers who are going places 00:45:39.57\00:45:42.87 that the pastors cannot go. Just 00:45:42.97\00:45:45.77 think-a pastor having 40 churches. I mean, 00:45:45.84\00:45:48.84 you can barely make the rounds in a year; 00:45:48.98\00:45:51.65 you know? It's unbelievable. So 00:45:51.71\00:45:54.22 they're reaching so many souls for Christ, 00:45:54.35\00:45:58.39 and also need a hundred churches. Right now, 00:45:58.52\00:46:04.19 if you have a Sabbath school class that 00:46:04.26\00:46:06.19 would like to sponsor a church to raise $1,000 00:46:06.23\00:46:09.66 and donate to them, you, really- it's just 00:46:09.73\00:46:14.04 like your money suddenly tripled 'cause 00:46:14.10\00:46:15.77 they've got someone with matching funds 00:46:15.84\00:46:17.91 that they will give $2,000 for every 1,000 00:46:18.04\00:46:20.38 that is donated. So, if the Holy Spirit 00:46:20.48\00:46:23.08 is impressing upon your heart to support 00:46:23.11\00:46:25.95 this work, here's how you can get in 00:46:26.01\00:46:28.18 touch with them. 00:46:28.28\00:46:30.05 - If you would like to help Riverside Farm 00:46:31.65\00:46:33.29 Institute build churches in Zambia, you can 00:46:33.39\00:46:35.96 donate online by visiting OutpostCenters.org 00:46:36.02\00:46:39.19 and clicking on their Donate button. Then, 00:46:39.29\00:46:41.93 click on the Ministries menu and select 00:46:42.03\00:46:44.57 Riverside Farm Institute. That 00:46:44.67\00:46:46.90 website, again, is OutpostCenters.org 00:46:47.07\00:46:49.90 You may also mail your donation to 00:46:50.04\00:46:52.17 Outpost Centers 5132 Layton Lane, Apison, 00:46:52.24\00:46:56.44 Tennessee 37302. Please earmark your 00:46:56.54\00:47:00.35 donation to Riverside Farm churches, and 00:47:00.45\00:47:03.55 thank you for all you do to help spread 00:47:03.62\00:47:05.59 the gospel. 00:47:05.65\00:47:08.19 You know, these pioneer Bible workers, 00:47:16.63\00:47:18.33 particularly, are such a blessing, 00:47:18.40\00:47:22.40 because there's no way these outlying 00:47:22.47\00:47:25.07 breaches could be reached. Now, these 00:47:25.14\00:47:28.08 people- are they recent converts? 00:47:28.14\00:47:31.21 I mean, if they're going out there to 00:47:31.28\00:47:32.61 combat witchcraft, or are they people 00:47:32.65\00:47:35.28 who've been Seventh-Day Adventist Christians 00:47:35.32\00:47:36.89 for some time? - Generally, the 00:47:36.99\00:47:39.52 pioneers will be seasoned Seventh-Day 00:47:39.55\00:47:42.02 Adventists, leaders or deacons in their 00:47:42.12\00:47:45.89 church, and they come to Riverside for 00:47:45.96\00:47:47.56 additional training: how to manage church, 00:47:47.63\00:47:51.50 counsel people, and to give them some 00:47:51.57\00:47:55.74 encouragement that they have a connection 00:47:55.80\00:47:57.77 to something bigger than just themselves. 00:47:57.84\00:48:00.28 So, some of these guys will come across 00:48:00.38\00:48:03.91 stories that curl your blood, or you just 00:48:05.01\00:48:10.25 say, "Praise God for His miracles/mercies." 00:48:10.69\00:48:14.39 I think of one particular man who 00:48:14.49\00:48:19.26 was doing ministry in this area, and the 00:48:19.33\00:48:23.70 chief was opposing him. This goes all 00:48:23.77\00:48:26.84 the time. The chief actually told them 00:48:26.87\00:48:31.34 he couldn't do an evangelistic meeting 00:48:31.41\00:48:33.27 in his village. He had walked for a whole 00:48:33.38\00:48:37.31 day to get there. He had all his 00:48:37.41\00:48:39.81 equipment there, was ready, and 00:48:39.88\00:48:43.02 advertised. "You can't evangelistic meeting 00:48:43.08\00:48:47.72 here or I'll have you arrested." So, 00:48:47.79\00:48:51.79 he decided he'd better not get arrested, 00:48:51.89\00:48:54.23 so he backed up, went to another 00:48:54.30\00:48:56.40 little village that was out of his 00:48:56.46\00:48:58.07 jurisdiction, and did his evangelism. Some 00:48:58.17\00:49:01.50 people were baptized. He decided in the 00:49:01.57\00:49:03.97 middle, he was going to go back to this 00:49:04.01\00:49:06.17 village, sneak in, and tell people that 00:49:06.27\00:49:08.38 there's an evangelistic meeting in the next 00:49:08.48\00:49:09.88 village! Well, unfortunately (or 00:49:09.94\00:49:13.85 or fortunately), the chief heard about it 00:49:13.92\00:49:16.72 and he got the police, or the vigilantes, 00:49:16.79\00:49:20.06 and they arrested him and actually put 00:49:20.16\00:49:21.82 him in jail for a couple of days. 00:49:21.86\00:49:23.22 After a couple of days, he got out 00:49:25.33\00:49:27.26 and went home. They had beaten him, 00:49:27.43\00:49:29.50 even, just for disrespecting the 00:49:29.60\00:49:32.00 chief. When he got home, he heard that 00:49:32.10\00:49:35.57 the chief had fallen sick. Okay, here's 00:49:35.60\00:49:38.07 a story. Chief is sick; the missionary's 00:49:38.11\00:49:41.31 going to come and heal him... No, it didn't 00:49:41.38\00:49:44.41 work that way. He came, and on his 00:49:44.51\00:49:50.45 way, he heard that the chief died. So 00:49:50.52\00:49:53.86 he said, "Well, now I can do the 00:49:53.92\00:49:57.49 evangelistic series in the village!" 00:49:57.53\00:50:00.80 Sure enough, there wasn't anybody else 00:50:00.90\00:50:02.43 opposing him, so he started up again- 00:50:02.50\00:50:04.97 the second evangelistic meeting right in that 00:50:05.03\00:50:07.30 village. I don't know if you can call it 00:50:07.37\00:50:11.37 a miracle that the chief died, but it 00:50:11.47\00:50:14.34 was some kind of a miracle. God allowed 00:50:14.41\00:50:16.88 this, and now they have a congregation 00:50:16.95\00:50:19.81 there with no church building because the 00:50:19.85\00:50:21.85 chief hadn't allowed anything. I think 00:50:21.92\00:50:23.95 there was 12 or 13 people baptized 00:50:23.99\00:50:26.45 there, and they're calling for a one-day 00:50:26.55\00:50:28.62 church right now. When I get back, 00:50:28.66\00:50:30.69 they want one. - Amen. And we just 00:50:30.73\00:50:33.33 want to- I'm glad you mentioned that, 00:50:33.40\00:50:35.90 because we want to say, one more 00:50:35.96\00:50:37.63 time, that right now, you have a 00:50:37.70\00:50:41.30 donor who will more than match funds. 00:50:41.37\00:50:44.31 You've got double-matching 00:50:44.37\00:50:45.74 funds, so just $1,000 from our viewers 00:50:45.81\00:50:53.92 and listeners of 3ABN... For every 00:50:53.98\00:50:56.45 $1,000, that is- and these churches are 00:50:56.48\00:50:59.62 $3,000 each; you need 100 of them. But 00:50:59.69\00:51:02.82 right now, you've only gotta raise 00:51:02.89\00:51:05.33 100,000 because for every thousand you 00:51:05.39\00:51:07.70 raise, somebody will donate 2,000, and 00:51:07.76\00:51:11.50 that is so amazing to me, to think that 00:51:11.57\00:51:14.00 $1,000 can help put up a church. 00:51:14.04\00:51:18.04 I'm sure that you've seen people's lives 00:51:18.14\00:51:21.48 change when they have these churches. 00:51:21.58\00:51:24.55 - That's right.
