Yes, I do too. 00:02:18.43\00:02:19.77 Associate carries a little more panache, 00:02:19.80\00:02:21.77 a little more elan, a little more cachet. 00:02:21.80\00:02:23.61 I just like associate better. 00:02:23.64\00:02:25.04 So I'm changing your title, Ryan, 00:02:25.07\00:02:26.51 you are now the associate. Sounds great. 00:02:26.54\00:02:28.04 Yeah, no more money, but you get... 00:02:28.08\00:02:29.84 That's okay. That's okay. But you get another title. 00:02:29.88\00:02:31.95 And, of course, 00:02:31.98\00:02:33.31 we have our student of the Word and fellow traveler, 00:02:33.35\00:02:35.05 this is our friend, Shelley Quinn. 00:02:35.08\00:02:37.85 Who does so many, many things and hosts so many programs, 00:02:37.89\00:02:40.59 and she is an author and a speaker of some note, 00:02:40.66\00:02:43.32 and, Shelley, always good to have you here. 00:02:43.36\00:02:44.83 Oh, it's always good to be here. 00:02:44.86\00:02:46.19 Yeah. 00:02:46.23\00:02:47.60 I have to say before I introduce John Dinzey. 00:02:47.63\00:02:49.43 Someone asked me some time ago, 00:02:49.46\00:02:50.80 when we do these Bible programs, 00:02:50.87\00:02:52.20 do we get in a room and kind of go over our stuff together. 00:02:52.23\00:02:54.24 And the answer is... 00:02:54.27\00:02:55.60 No! 00:02:55.64\00:02:57.01 No, we don't do that. 00:02:57.04\00:02:58.91 Shelley just got the subject several hours ago. 00:02:58.94\00:03:01.01 So we know that we don't get... 00:03:01.04\00:03:02.38 Actually, 30 minutes ago. 00:03:02.41\00:03:04.65 Isn't that recent? 00:03:04.68\00:03:06.15 John Dinzey is our General Manager 00:03:06.18\00:03:07.95 at 3ABN Latino Channel. 00:03:07.98\00:03:09.98 Johnny, good to have you here, man. 00:03:10.02\00:03:11.42 It's a pleasure to be here once again to study God's Word. 00:03:11.45\00:03:13.76 Praise the Lord. 00:03:13.79\00:03:15.12 We don't. 00:03:15.16\00:03:16.49 And the one of the reasons we don't do that... 00:03:16.52\00:03:18.36 We don't need to do that 00:03:18.39\00:03:19.73 is because truth, I think you all agree, 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.96 is an objective thing. 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.37 It is not subjective. Truth is objective. 00:03:23.40\00:03:25.17 Amen. 00:03:25.20\00:03:26.53 And when you're all studying truth, 00:03:26.57\00:03:29.20 as you come closer to that fixed mark that is truth, 00:03:29.24\00:03:33.58 you also come closer one to the other. 00:03:33.61\00:03:36.18 You know, as you're coming closer to the cross, 00:03:36.21\00:03:37.78 you're drawing closer to each other. 00:03:37.81\00:03:39.15 As you're drawing closer to truth, 00:03:39.18\00:03:40.95 you're always drawing closer to each other. 00:03:40.98\00:03:43.25 And so we have never had to do that 00:03:43.28\00:03:46.22 because the Holy Spirit works through us and with us, 00:03:46.25\00:03:51.09 and as we draw closer to the truth, 00:03:51.13\00:03:52.79 there is a natural sort of symbiosis that takes place, 00:03:52.83\00:03:56.56 and everybody's on the same page. 00:03:56.60\00:03:58.30 So in the 14 years that I've been here and changed. 00:03:58.33\00:04:01.80 And, Shelley, we came about the same time. 00:04:01.84\00:04:03.51 Although you had done some work before, 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.21 we've never had to get into a room 00:04:05.24\00:04:06.57 and make sure we don't step on each other, 00:04:06.61\00:04:07.98 say the wrong thing because we're all studying truth, 00:04:08.01\00:04:10.15 and truth has a way of galvanizing your thoughts 00:04:10.18\00:04:12.61 and bringing everything together. 00:04:12.65\00:04:14.02 So I'm excited as we talk about legalism. 00:04:14.05\00:04:18.85 And I need to say in setting this up, 00:04:18.89\00:04:20.46 you know, there are certain sins, 00:04:20.49\00:04:22.56 certain problems that tend to afflict 00:04:22.59\00:04:24.86 the believer more than other things. 00:04:24.89\00:04:28.40 Pride, we find out, 00:04:28.43\00:04:30.90 it can be resonant in the church. 00:04:30.97\00:04:32.53 Legalism is something that affects the believer. 00:04:32.57\00:04:35.64 You almost have to be a believer to be a legalist. 00:04:35.67\00:04:38.74 You know, if you're not a believer, 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.41 you can't be a legalist 00:04:40.48\00:04:41.81 because it's not important to you. 00:04:41.84\00:04:43.45 But this thing that we call legalism, 00:04:43.48\00:04:46.18 we're going to unpackage that in just a little bit, 00:04:46.21\00:04:48.12 is something that afflicts the church, 00:04:48.15\00:04:49.88 that affects believers in the church, 00:04:49.92\00:04:51.29 affects believers in the church. 00:04:51.32\00:04:52.65 Of all denominations. 00:04:52.69\00:04:54.06 Of all denominations. Yeah, of all denominations. 00:04:54.09\00:04:56.96 Perhaps some more than other, but certainly it is. 00:04:57.03\00:05:00.33 For those who want to be reformers, 00:05:00.40\00:05:02.63 who want to try to live as close to the Lord 00:05:02.66\00:05:06.43 as it possibly can, 00:05:06.47\00:05:07.90 it is a danger that they can step into 00:05:07.94\00:05:12.07 that needs to be guarded against very, very carefully. 00:05:12.11\00:05:14.74 So that's what we're going to talk about. 00:05:14.78\00:05:16.11 And I want to pray on air. 00:05:16.14\00:05:17.55 Shelley, if you would take us to the song 00:05:17.58\00:05:19.28 for just a few moments 00:05:19.31\00:05:20.65 because this is a very important subject. 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.05 Absolutely. 00:05:22.08\00:05:23.42 And we want to spend a little time just talking to the Lord 00:05:23.45\00:05:24.79 before we launch out and sort of wade out into it. 00:05:24.82\00:05:27.59 Heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus thanking You, 00:05:27.66\00:05:30.83 O Lord, that You loved us enough 00:05:30.86\00:05:32.36 to send Him to die for us 00:05:32.39\00:05:34.00 while we were yet sinners, 00:05:34.03\00:05:35.56 thanking You for the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ, 00:05:35.60\00:05:39.23 for Your Holy Spirit and Your Word, 00:05:39.27\00:05:41.80 and we ask just now, Father, 00:05:41.84\00:05:44.57 that for each one of us here, 00:05:44.61\00:05:47.61 O Father, fill us with Your afresh, with Your Spirit, 00:05:47.64\00:05:51.35 and, Lord, for all who are hearing our voice, 00:05:51.38\00:05:55.55 we ask in Jesus' name that 00:05:55.58\00:05:58.02 You would give each one of us ears to hear 00:05:58.05\00:06:00.46 what the Holy Spirit would have to say, 00:06:00.49\00:06:01.82 and we pray, Father, 00:06:01.86\00:06:04.99 that this program will help guard our hearts 00:06:05.03\00:06:09.10 against legalism, Lord. 00:06:09.13\00:06:11.57 And so we give You all the praise, all the glory. 00:06:11.60\00:06:16.34 And we thank You, Father, for You know You are with us. 00:06:16.37\00:06:19.54 And we just want to also thank You 00:06:19.57\00:06:21.74 for bringing Ryan in with us today. 00:06:21.78\00:06:24.85 And, Lord, may You be glorified, 00:06:24.88\00:06:28.32 help us to lift Christ high 00:06:28.35\00:06:30.79 that He may draw all unto Himself. 00:06:30.82\00:06:33.15 In Jesus' holy name we pray, thanking You, Father, 00:06:33.19\00:06:36.56 for the answer to the prayer of faith. 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.36 Amen. Amen. 00:06:38.39\00:06:39.73 Amen. 00:06:39.76\00:06:41.10 We do want to mention... 00:06:41.13\00:06:42.46 You know, you hate to keep calling him 00:06:42.50\00:06:43.87 new, new, new, new, new, he is new still. 00:06:43.90\00:06:45.30 There's still just some gloss on him, 00:06:45.33\00:06:47.24 but Ryan Day is an evangelist, a preacher, a teacher, 00:06:47.27\00:06:51.57 a world-class singer, and we're finding out a pretty nice guy 00:06:51.61\00:06:55.31 and a Christian. 00:06:55.34\00:06:56.75 So soon and very soon, we will drop the moniker new, 00:06:56.78\00:07:00.12 he'll just be Ryan Day or Pastor Ryan Day. 00:07:00.15\00:07:03.08 For now, new but not much longer will he be. 00:07:03.12\00:07:08.52 When we define legalism, lords and lady, 00:07:08.56\00:07:12.53 I went to the dictionary and found it actually woefully 00:07:12.56\00:07:15.40 lacking in the depth of definition. 00:07:15.43\00:07:21.20 The dictionary said it's an excessive adherence 00:07:21.24\00:07:25.27 to a law or a formula. 00:07:25.31\00:07:28.11 It is dependence on moral law 00:07:28.14\00:07:30.05 rather than personal religious faith, which is nice, 00:07:30.08\00:07:34.45 but it lacks the depth of what legalism really is, 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.99 and I want to sort of wade into that 00:07:38.02\00:07:39.75 and allow you each to give a definition 00:07:39.79\00:07:42.66 from your heart as to what it is 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.03 because that will sort of begin to set the platform 00:07:44.06\00:07:46.90 for what we're talking about. 00:07:46.93\00:07:48.26 Because legalism, more than a philosophy, is a practice. 00:07:48.30\00:07:51.67 Yes. 00:07:51.70\00:07:53.03 And when you're dealing with a term like that, 00:07:53.07\00:07:57.41 you've got to go a little deeper than the what, 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.61 and you've got to go into the why 00:07:59.64\00:08:01.78 because the what exists because of the why and... 00:08:01.81\00:08:06.45 So we want to sort of wade into that. 00:08:06.48\00:08:07.95 Ryan, I think I'll start with you. 00:08:07.98\00:08:09.88 If you're defining legalism, 00:08:09.92\00:08:11.25 your mind, from your study, what do you have? 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.46 Well, I mean, you know, legalism, 00:08:13.49\00:08:15.52 traveling on the road, meeting lots of different people, 00:08:15.56\00:08:18.06 you meet all kinds of different personalities, 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.80 people with different ideas, perspectives of the gospel. 00:08:20.83\00:08:25.23 And so I see that to a certain extent. 00:08:25.27\00:08:27.17 I see legalism as being someone battling or struggling 00:08:27.24\00:08:31.54 with the concept of a gospel, what the gospel means to them. 00:08:31.57\00:08:35.71 And so in this case, I think a person who is legalistic-minded 00:08:35.74\00:08:39.85 is someone who is, you know, for lack of a better term, 00:08:39.88\00:08:43.99 kind of unsettled or unsatisfied 00:08:44.02\00:08:46.76 with their faith, with the idea that Christ has literally 00:08:46.79\00:08:53.53 become the full substitute for them, 00:08:53.60\00:08:55.63 that there is a sense of I always have to do more, 00:08:55.66\00:08:59.17 you know, there's not enough that I can do, 00:08:59.20\00:09:01.24 I'm not good enough, I'm not perfect enough. 00:09:01.27\00:09:03.81 And so there's always that that idea that 00:09:03.84\00:09:07.41 I must keep working, working, working to please God 00:09:07.48\00:09:10.45 or to bring myself in favor with God, 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.68 that He can give me grace but not until then. 00:09:12.71\00:09:16.69 And there's different variations. 00:09:16.72\00:09:18.09 You're going to run into a lot of people. 00:09:18.12\00:09:19.45 I have personally who, you know, 00:09:19.49\00:09:21.12 don't necessarily consider themselves a legalist, 00:09:21.16\00:09:22.99 but they are. 00:09:23.02\00:09:24.36 But some people are very open. 00:09:24.39\00:09:25.73 They might consider themselves a legalist, 00:09:25.76\00:09:27.10 but there are so many different perspectives or ideologies out 00:09:27.13\00:09:30.37 there concerning the legalistic mindset. 00:09:30.40\00:09:33.07 So that would be kind of a broad, 00:09:33.10\00:09:36.24 a very broad perspective of what legalism or what a person 00:09:36.27\00:09:40.01 with a legalistic mindset might be. 00:09:40.08\00:09:41.64 Well said. Shelley? 00:09:41.68\00:09:43.75 I guess if I were to define it, I would say 00:09:43.78\00:09:45.55 it's a doctrinal position of rules and regulations 00:09:45.58\00:09:50.72 to achieve salvation and spiritual growth. 00:09:50.79\00:09:56.12 This is people who think, you know, one thing 00:09:56.16\00:09:59.13 we know is both the Old and the New Testament 00:09:59.16\00:10:01.96 are very clear that salvation belongs to the Lord. 00:10:02.00\00:10:06.40 And I think that it is a pride issue. 00:10:06.43\00:10:10.51 Let me put it this way. 00:10:13.78\00:10:15.11 To me, the definition of humility is to be absolutely, 00:10:15.14\00:10:19.18 totally dependent upon the Lord. 00:10:19.21\00:10:21.52 That's humility. That was Christ. 00:10:21.55\00:10:24.29 But I think for some people, it's like, 00:10:24.32\00:10:28.62 "I've got to do something to, you know, 00:10:28.66\00:10:31.69 contribute to my salvation, to my spiritual growth." 00:10:31.73\00:10:35.16 And I think that this is something that 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.80 we can be legalistic about 00:10:37.83\00:10:40.14 following these systems of rules and regulations, 00:10:40.17\00:10:42.80 and often they are man-made, 00:10:42.84\00:10:44.74 sometimes it's going back to the Old Covenant. 00:10:44.77\00:10:47.74 There are people who think that 00:10:47.78\00:10:49.94 we still have to follow the Law of Moses 00:10:49.98\00:10:52.78 and the Book of Deuteronomy that was nailed to the cross. 00:10:52.81\00:10:56.22 But, you know, we can be legalistic. 00:10:56.25\00:10:58.42 Let me put it this way. 00:10:58.45\00:10:59.79 Let's say that there is a non-essential doctrine. 00:10:59.82\00:11:03.22 We've got to be careful about heresy. 00:11:03.26\00:11:05.43 But if there is a non-essential doctrine 00:11:05.46\00:11:08.63 that we disagree with someone, 00:11:08.66\00:11:11.13 you can actually get legalistic about it. 00:11:11.17\00:11:13.23 It's kind of like, you know, 00:11:13.27\00:11:14.60 it's got to be according to my interpretation, 00:11:14.64\00:11:16.81 and we're ready to run you out of the church 00:11:16.84\00:11:19.91 if you're not agreeing with everything. 00:11:19.94\00:11:21.68 That's legalistic is too. 00:11:21.71\00:11:23.04 It is. Well said. Well said. Johnny? 00:11:23.08\00:11:26.28 You know, there are extremes even in legalism, 00:11:26.31\00:11:30.09 if you want to call it that, 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.45 because you have the people on one side 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.39 that they don't want to do anything. 00:11:34.42\00:11:37.53 They want to do whatever they want. 00:11:37.56\00:11:38.89 So you have this extreme over here, 00:11:38.93\00:11:40.96 then there are the legalistic people that are... 00:11:41.00\00:11:45.53 You have legalism and then legalistic people 00:11:45.57\00:11:48.20 that they have lost sight of Christ, 00:11:48.24\00:11:50.91 and they work not only to... 00:11:50.94\00:11:54.81 Like Paul, like Paul was without blame, without thought, 00:11:54.84\00:12:01.12 he was a legalist. 00:12:01.15\00:12:04.39 Paul was the perfect legalistic, 00:12:04.42\00:12:06.76 if you want to call it that, concerning the law, 00:12:06.79\00:12:09.29 blameless he would say. 00:12:09.32\00:12:11.03 So a legalist has lost sight of Christ. 00:12:11.06\00:12:14.83 Amen. That's a good way to say it. 00:12:14.86\00:12:17.47 The law or the rules and regulations 00:12:17.50\00:12:20.07 have become his or her God, this object is that. 00:12:20.14\00:12:24.74 Whereas the Christian, you know, Paul says, 00:12:24.77\00:12:27.64 "Be imitators of me as I am of Christ." 00:12:27.68\00:12:30.55 They're not seeking to imitate Christ, 00:12:30.58\00:12:31.91 but they're seeking to have purity in such a way 00:12:31.95\00:12:34.95 that they lose sight of the beauty of holiness. 00:12:34.98\00:12:37.75 Amen. 00:12:37.79\00:12:39.12 And, you know, all false religions 00:12:39.15\00:12:41.62 are work-based religions. 00:12:41.66\00:12:43.83 Very true. 00:12:43.86\00:12:45.19 So what you find that 00:12:45.23\00:12:46.70 not only are people who are legalistic, 00:12:46.73\00:12:49.73 and you always will find this that 00:12:49.76\00:12:51.20 they're very prideful that... 00:12:51.23\00:12:52.80 and I'll just give you an example of a woman that I met, 00:12:52.83\00:12:56.71 "I'm a vegan. I'm this, I'm that. 00:12:56.74\00:12:59.81 I'm ready to be translated." 00:12:59.84\00:13:01.21 And she had no real love in her heart, 00:13:01.24\00:13:04.75 that's being very legalistic. 00:13:04.78\00:13:06.58 But what you'll find is that 00:13:06.61\00:13:09.08 most legalistic people are very judgmental. 00:13:09.12\00:13:13.46 You know, they're very judgmental of others. 00:13:13.49\00:13:15.49 And they kind of take it upon themselves 00:13:15.52\00:13:19.59 to be judge and jury and to... 00:13:19.63\00:13:22.40 Jesus called us to be fishers of men, 00:13:22.43\00:13:25.60 but He didn't call us to be the cleaners of the fish. 00:13:25.63\00:13:29.74 And so I think that we've got to be careful 00:13:29.77\00:13:32.57 that we always show love and mercy to people 00:13:32.61\00:13:35.61 who may not have made it as far along as we have. 00:13:35.64\00:13:39.15 Amen. Well said. 00:13:39.18\00:13:40.52 You know, the thing about most legalists 00:13:40.55\00:13:42.52 is legalists don't have fun. 00:13:42.55\00:13:45.22 You know, it's hard to have fun 00:13:45.25\00:13:46.59 when you're trying to work your way into heaven, 00:13:46.62\00:13:48.19 when you're trying to do something to please a Lord 00:13:48.22\00:13:50.86 who already says, "I love you." 00:13:50.93\00:13:52.26 You know. 00:13:52.29\00:13:53.63 You can't earn that love, that love exists. 00:13:53.66\00:13:56.50 You simply accept and walk into that. 00:13:56.53\00:13:58.10 And if you're trying to earn it, 00:13:58.13\00:13:59.50 you're kind of a miserable person 00:13:59.53\00:14:00.87 'cause you can never be quite good enough. 00:14:00.94\00:14:02.57 And I see legalism as an attempt 00:14:02.60\00:14:04.87 to earn righteousness through, 00:14:04.91\00:14:06.78 and I use this term, stuff that you do. 00:14:06.81\00:14:09.88 And you can't do enough stuff, you know, 00:14:09.91\00:14:12.08 to earn that love which is already there. 00:14:12.11\00:14:14.85 Berkouwer, Dutch reformed theologian, 00:14:14.88\00:14:17.72 wrote a book called Sin, 750 pages, 00:14:17.75\00:14:19.72 I've read it once, once is enough. 00:14:19.75\00:14:22.66 But in that, he talked about, and you know this, 00:14:22.69\00:14:26.43 the four New Testament definitions of sin, 00:14:26.46\00:14:28.33 hamartia, which is missing the mark, 00:14:28.36\00:14:29.80 anomia, which is lawlessness or anarchy, 00:14:29.83\00:14:33.64 malosmus, which is wandering in the dark, 00:14:33.67\00:14:38.44 blind leading the blind, 00:14:38.47\00:14:39.81 and the last one is paraptoma, 00:14:39.84\00:14:42.11 which means intent got parry, 00:14:42.14\00:14:43.48 you've got walking alongside. 00:14:43.55\00:14:44.88 So the one that I see 00:14:44.91\00:14:47.02 that is closest to legalism is paraptoma. 00:14:47.05\00:14:49.98 It's a parallel path, 00:14:50.02\00:14:51.35 but it's not going in the same place. 00:14:51.39\00:14:52.79 It looks like it's right, but it's a parallel path. 00:14:52.82\00:14:56.83 Walking in the in the footsteps of Jesus is the correct path. 00:14:56.86\00:15:00.50 Paraptoma is walking alongside on a parallel path 00:15:00.53\00:15:03.57 but it's not the right path. 00:15:03.60\00:15:05.00 So you're trying to get 00:15:05.03\00:15:07.64 a righteous standing with the Lord 00:15:07.67\00:15:09.17 because you know you have to. 00:15:09.20\00:15:10.54 You need to be righteous. 00:15:10.61\00:15:11.94 But rather than surrendering to a righteousness 00:15:11.97\00:15:14.81 that is provided for you, 00:15:14.84\00:15:16.64 you're trying by your own efforts to please Him 00:15:16.68\00:15:19.05 and to be righteous, and, of course, 00:15:19.08\00:15:20.42 that which is not of faith is sin. 00:15:20.45\00:15:22.98 And without faith it is impossible to please Him. 00:15:23.02\00:15:26.15 So it's got to start with a pre-existing condition. 00:15:26.19\00:15:29.19 I like to say a love relationship 00:15:29.22\00:15:30.73 with the Lord and out of that love relationship 00:15:30.76\00:15:32.96 there comes obedience as a natural consequence. 00:15:32.99\00:15:35.70 So if you're trying to obey without that, 00:15:35.73\00:15:39.20 you are defeated before you begin. 00:15:39.23\00:15:43.00 You really can't go too far. 00:15:43.04\00:15:46.21 Having said that, let's ask this question, 00:15:46.24\00:15:48.34 why then is legalism wrong? 00:15:48.38\00:15:53.28 What makes it wrong? 00:15:53.31\00:15:55.68 Vis-A-vis, and Ryan and I were talking 00:15:55.72\00:15:57.09 about this just a little bit ago, 00:15:57.12\00:15:58.95 what Christ has done on the cross? 00:15:58.99\00:16:00.36 You got the substitutionary death of Christ on the cross, 00:16:00.39\00:16:03.02 then you got me trying to make myself good enough, 00:16:03.06\00:16:04.66 what's wrong with that? 00:16:04.69\00:16:06.13 Yeah. 00:16:06.16\00:16:07.50 I found a quote. 00:16:07.53\00:16:10.80 This comes from the Bible Echo, July 2nd 1894. 00:16:10.87\00:16:15.00 When I found this quote, 00:16:15.04\00:16:16.37 I think it, in a general sense summed up 00:16:16.40\00:16:19.34 the wrongfulness of legalism. 00:16:19.37\00:16:21.64 I'm just going to read it here, it's not very long. 00:16:21.68\00:16:23.45 It says, "All legalism, 00:16:23.48\00:16:25.98 all the sorrow and woe by which you may encompass yourself 00:16:26.01\00:16:31.32 will not give you one moment of relief. 00:16:31.35\00:16:34.82 You cannot rightly estimate sin. 00:16:34.86\00:16:38.06 You must accept God's estimate. And it is heavy indeed. 00:16:38.09\00:16:44.40 If you bore the guilt of your sin, 00:16:44.43\00:16:47.24 it would crush you." 00:16:47.27\00:16:49.34 "But the sinless one has taken your place, 00:16:49.37\00:16:53.21 and though undeserving, 00:16:53.24\00:16:55.04 he has become your guilt. 00:16:55.08\00:16:57.38 By accepting the provision God has made," that's the key, 00:16:57.45\00:17:00.98 "by accepting the provision that God has made, 00:17:01.02\00:17:03.99 you may stand free before Him in the merit 00:17:04.02\00:17:08.36 and virtue of your substitute." 00:17:08.39\00:17:10.83 And we know that substitute to be Christ. 00:17:10.86\00:17:12.86 And so I think, Shelley alluded to it very clearly, legalism, 00:17:12.89\00:17:17.47 I think the ultimate wrongfulness about it 00:17:17.50\00:17:19.97 is that there's a sense of strong pride there. 00:17:20.04\00:17:23.07 I can't accept Christ as my ultimate substitute. 00:17:23.10\00:17:27.18 Even though legalist will verbally say that, 00:17:27.21\00:17:29.54 obviously no one's going to march around and say, 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.85 "You know, I can't really accept 00:17:31.88\00:17:33.21 fully the sacrifice of Jesus." 00:17:33.25\00:17:35.32 But literally, when you get down to the, 00:17:35.35\00:17:37.95 you know, to the brass tacks of this issue, 00:17:37.99\00:17:40.46 you're dealing with someone 00:17:40.49\00:17:41.92 who ultimately is so prideful that it's like, 00:17:41.96\00:17:44.66 you know, "Christ, I know He did this for me 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.60 but I've got to add to that." 00:17:47.63\00:17:48.96 Yes. 00:17:49.00\00:17:50.37 "I've got to do more to make sure 00:17:50.40\00:17:51.73 that that He's fully satisfied with me 00:17:51.77\00:17:55.37 as His child and as a servant." 00:17:55.40\00:17:56.74 And so it really is a legalistic issue of pride 00:17:56.81\00:18:01.51 on the part of the individual. 00:18:01.54\00:18:02.88 Yes. 00:18:02.91\00:18:04.25 Shelley, you touched on that, what you're saying basically, 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.65 Jesus ain't enough. 00:18:06.72\00:18:08.62 That sacrifice was not enough, 00:18:08.65\00:18:10.22 I got to add to that. 00:18:10.29\00:18:11.62 And you've touched on that before, 00:18:11.65\00:18:12.99 Shelley, this idea of pride. 00:18:13.02\00:18:15.16 I got to have a part in my salvation, 00:18:15.19\00:18:17.03 I got to put some bean in a pot. 00:18:17.06\00:18:18.39 It's not enough to just serve me the soup, 00:18:18.43\00:18:20.40 I want to add something to that. 00:18:20.43\00:18:21.76 You know, it's interesting because in Galatians 5, 00:18:21.80\00:18:25.03 Paul's talking to the Galatians who were being agitated 00:18:25.07\00:18:29.37 and stirred up by the Judaizers 00:18:29.40\00:18:32.51 and trying to get them to go back to... 00:18:32.54\00:18:35.94 Or saying, "You got to follow the Law of Moses, 00:18:35.98\00:18:38.18 you've got to be circumcised, you've got to do this, 00:18:38.21\00:18:40.15 you've got to do that." 00:18:40.22\00:18:41.55 And Paul comes out and tells them, 00:18:41.58\00:18:43.69 "Hey, you know, if you're circumcised, 00:18:43.72\00:18:46.96 then Christ is of no prophety." 00:18:46.99\00:18:48.86 But he goes on in verse 4. 00:18:48.89\00:18:51.06 He says that, you know, 00:18:51.09\00:18:52.43 "If you're going to be circumcised, 00:18:52.46\00:18:53.80 you've got to keep the whole Law of Moses." 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.77 And in verse 4, he says, 00:18:56.80\00:18:58.73 "You have become estranged from grace, 00:18:58.77\00:19:04.24 you who attempt to be justified," 00:19:04.31\00:19:07.21 Yes. 00:19:07.28\00:19:08.61 "By law, you have fallen, you're estranged from Christ, 00:19:08.64\00:19:13.75 you have fallen from grace." 00:19:13.82\00:19:16.72 And see, this is something that the pride of man 00:19:16.79\00:19:20.66 and, you know, 00:19:20.69\00:19:22.12 it's interesting what you were saying 00:19:22.16\00:19:23.56 was legalism 'cause I grew up 00:19:23.63\00:19:26.70 caught up on this little windmill type thing 00:19:26.73\00:19:32.50 or what do you call it with a little hamster 00:19:32.53\00:19:34.57 runs on the running wheel? 00:19:34.60\00:19:35.94 Yeah. 00:19:35.97\00:19:37.31 Anyway, that I was taught I had to be perfect 00:19:37.34\00:19:40.28 to be loved by God. 00:19:40.31\00:19:41.64 Now I did grow up a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:19:41.68\00:19:43.45 but I was taught I had to be perfect 00:19:43.48\00:19:46.01 to be loved by God. 00:19:46.05\00:19:47.72 And although, I mean I didn't know what grace was, 00:19:47.75\00:19:51.52 but even when I learned about grace, 00:19:51.55\00:19:54.56 I had a case of the do mores, 00:19:54.59\00:19:56.93 I call it the performance type mentality where 00:19:56.96\00:20:00.93 "Oh, Lord, if I'd only read my Bible more. 00:20:00.96\00:20:03.06 Oh, I need to, you know, make sure..." 00:20:03.10\00:20:05.63 I had a man say recently, 00:20:05.67\00:20:07.54 he was brought up to believe if you didn't spend four hours 00:20:07.57\00:20:10.24 in church on Sabbath 00:20:10.31\00:20:11.77 that you hadn't celebrated Sabbath. 00:20:11.81\00:20:14.38 That's a man, you know, 00:20:14.41\00:20:15.74 you're not going to find a thus saith the Lord on that. 00:20:15.78\00:20:17.25 Right. 00:20:17.28\00:20:18.61 So but it was like, if only I read more, 00:20:18.65\00:20:22.42 if only I prayed more, if only... 00:20:22.45\00:20:25.55 and when I wasn't, 00:20:25.59\00:20:26.96 then I always start to feel guilty. 00:20:26.99\00:20:28.99 To this day, I have to stop and say, 00:20:29.02\00:20:31.49 "Lord, thank You for who You are, 00:20:31.53\00:20:33.09 thank You for grace." 00:20:33.13\00:20:34.56 Because you can get... 00:20:34.60\00:20:37.40 And I didn't think of myself as legalistic 00:20:37.47\00:20:40.34 'cause I felt like I was it 00:20:40.37\00:20:41.74 but I did still feel like 00:20:41.77\00:20:44.04 I needed to do something to earn His favor. 00:20:44.11\00:20:46.17 Yeah. 00:20:46.21\00:20:47.58 You know, and it's of the worldly mind 00:20:47.61\00:20:49.28 but it's logical and it's sequitur. 00:20:49.31\00:20:52.35 The idea that if I do a little Bible reading, 00:20:52.38\00:20:54.85 I feel pretty good, I'm okay, more ought to be better, 00:20:54.88\00:20:57.89 you know. Yeah, yeah. 00:20:57.92\00:20:59.25 If I give up this, that ought to make me better. 00:20:59.29\00:21:01.89 If I pray a little more, that ought to make me better. 00:21:01.92\00:21:05.53 There is something in the back of our minds that says to us, 00:21:05.56\00:21:08.73 "If you do this just do a little more 00:21:08.76\00:21:10.27 and God will love you more. 00:21:10.30\00:21:12.13 There'll be a closer relationship, 00:21:12.17\00:21:13.64 you can maybe get more blessings 00:21:13.67\00:21:15.00 or get more stuff from the Lord, 00:21:15.04\00:21:16.47 just do a little more." 00:21:16.50\00:21:18.34 And the default setting is that's anti-God. 00:21:18.37\00:21:22.18 Amen. 00:21:22.21\00:21:23.55 That's saying to God, "You're not sufficient for me. 00:21:23.58\00:21:26.92 I've got to do something to add." 00:21:26.95\00:21:28.28 And, of course, the moment you do that, 00:21:28.32\00:21:29.65 you're actually walking away from the Lord 00:21:29.68\00:21:31.45 and not walking closer to Him. 00:21:31.49\00:21:32.82 And I think what legalism, the bottom line, 00:21:32.85\00:21:36.46 it opposes salvation by grace. 00:21:36.49\00:21:39.09 Yes. 00:21:39.13\00:21:40.50 It is opposing the grace of our Lord and Savior, 00:21:40.53\00:21:44.17 Jesus Christ, and we know Ephesians 2: 8-10 says, 00:21:44.20\00:21:47.54 "We were saved by grace, 00:21:47.57\00:21:48.90 not by works so that no man could have any boast." 00:21:48.94\00:21:54.61 But we were saved, the Bible says, 00:21:54.64\00:21:57.35 "For the good works He prepared in advance for us to do." 00:21:57.38\00:22:00.52 But it's all to His glory. 00:22:00.55\00:22:02.38 And I think we have a hard time 00:22:02.42\00:22:04.39 giving it all to the glory of God. 00:22:04.42\00:22:05.75 And I agree with you, and it's very interesting 00:22:05.79\00:22:07.66 that Ephesians 2 juxtaposes 10, says, 00:22:07.69\00:22:11.16 "Created for good works 00:22:11.19\00:22:12.53 right behind by grace", as you say. 00:22:12.56\00:22:14.10 So there is a fusion, there is a connection, 00:22:14.13\00:22:16.87 but the connection comes 00:22:16.90\00:22:18.87 when the pre-existing condition 00:22:18.90\00:22:20.54 of relationship with Jesus is in place. 00:22:20.57\00:22:22.37 Amen. 00:22:22.40\00:22:23.74 Then the good works flow out of and not instead of. 00:22:23.81\00:22:25.84 Right. Johnny? 00:22:25.87\00:22:27.21 You know, most people... 00:22:27.28\00:22:31.38 have either this "I'm not good enough to be saved, 00:22:34.22\00:22:38.59 even though Christ died for me on the cross, 00:22:38.62\00:22:40.76 He took my place. 00:22:40.79\00:22:42.16 I'm not good enough to be saved." 00:22:42.19\00:22:45.36 It's a works oriented in their mind 00:22:45.39\00:22:48.06 because you're saying, "I have to do more, 00:22:48.10\00:22:50.90 I have to do more, 00:22:50.97\00:22:52.30 I'm not good enough to be saved." 00:22:52.33\00:22:53.67 And, of course, in all this, 00:22:53.70\00:22:55.04 of legalism and these extremes 00:22:55.07\00:22:57.11 that people go to that that was working in people's minds. 00:22:57.14\00:22:59.04 Amen. 00:22:59.07\00:23:00.41 That was working in people's minds. 00:23:00.48\00:23:01.81 Even though some people have asked for forgiveness, 00:23:01.84\00:23:04.25 and wept before the Lord, 00:23:04.28\00:23:07.75 and they don't commit the same sin again, 00:23:07.78\00:23:09.75 but they're asking the Lord, 00:23:09.78\00:23:11.12 "Lord, forgive me for that sin." 00:23:11.15\00:23:12.49 Because it comes back to their mind 00:23:12.52\00:23:13.89 because it's there, 00:23:13.96\00:23:15.29 the mind keeps a record of it. 00:23:15.32\00:23:16.93 And then devil, of course, 00:23:16.96\00:23:18.29 tries to bring it back to your mind. 00:23:18.33\00:23:20.80 I like to read the Scripture 00:23:20.83\00:23:22.16 because I think it helps illustrate 00:23:22.20\00:23:24.07 a little bit about legalistic mindset. 00:23:24.10\00:23:27.80 And this is Luke 18, 00:23:27.84\00:23:29.44 Jesus says in starting verse 10, 00:23:29.47\00:23:31.07 "Two men went up into the temple to pray, 00:23:31.11\00:23:32.97 the one a Pharisee and the other Republican. 00:23:33.01\00:23:35.21 The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 00:23:35.24\00:23:38.21 'God, I thank Thee that I am not as other men are, 00:23:38.25\00:23:42.02 extortioners, unjust, adulterers, 00:23:42.05\00:23:44.75 or even as this publican. 00:23:44.79\00:23:46.52 I fast twice in the week, 00:23:46.55\00:23:47.96 I give tithes of all that I possess.' 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.53 And the publican standing afar off would not even lift up 00:23:50.56\00:23:53.70 so much as his eyes unto heaven but smote upon his breast 00:23:53.73\00:23:56.53 saying God be merciful to me, a sinner.' 00:23:56.56\00:24:01.60 And Jesus, as I tell you, 00:24:01.64\00:24:02.97 this man went down to his house justified 00:24:03.00\00:24:05.01 rather than the other for everyone 00:24:05.04\00:24:06.81 that exalts himself shall be abased 00:24:06.88\00:24:09.64 and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted." 00:24:09.68\00:24:13.21 So this is the problem with the legalistic mind. 00:24:13.25\00:24:16.89 He is not going to be justified, 00:24:16.92\00:24:18.95 he's trying and trying and trying, 00:24:18.99\00:24:21.32 but he's never going to feel good enough. 00:24:21.36\00:24:24.23 You see, there's that never going to feel good enough 00:24:24.26\00:24:26.90 and always got to keep trying more. 00:24:26.93\00:24:29.16 And then, of course, we need to find Jesus. 00:24:29.20\00:24:32.97 When you keep your eyes on Jesus and if I be lifted up, 00:24:33.00\00:24:35.47 will draw all men unto me. Amen. 00:24:35.50\00:24:37.11 And Jesus has to be our focus. 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.97 The grace, you know, 00:24:39.01\00:24:40.71 when you understand that Jesus came to save me, 00:24:40.78\00:24:45.78 I am a sinner, He came to save me, 00:24:45.81\00:24:48.55 and there's really... 00:24:48.58\00:24:49.92 nothing I can add to what Christ has done for me, 00:24:52.19\00:24:55.79 you know, I can't add anything that will say okay, 00:24:55.82\00:24:59.13 Christ did all this but because 00:24:59.16\00:25:01.26 you fed a 100 people, or you, 00:25:01.30\00:25:06.63 you know, you went to church every week, 00:25:06.67\00:25:09.00 or, you know, whatever works you want to pile onto that, 00:25:09.04\00:25:13.17 he says, the focus is... 00:25:13.21\00:25:15.11 "By grace you are saved through faith." 00:25:15.14\00:25:17.35 And that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. 00:25:17.38\00:25:19.68 But then there's the other part, 00:25:19.71\00:25:21.72 "We were created for..." 00:25:21.75\00:25:23.22 Good works. "Good works." 00:25:23.25\00:25:24.59 And, see, that has to come in there 00:25:24.62\00:25:26.22 but there has to be a balance 00:25:26.25\00:25:27.89 because the focus always has to be Christ. 00:25:27.92\00:25:29.46 Now someone is sitting home, 00:25:29.49\00:25:30.93 and either of you can sort of grab onto this, 00:25:30.96\00:25:33.73 and they're saying, 00:25:33.80\00:25:35.13 "It sounds like they're saying that there is no place 00:25:35.16\00:25:37.63 for commandment keeping in the life 00:25:37.67\00:25:39.03 of the safest person." 00:25:39.07\00:25:40.44 And this is attention that the Adventist Church... 00:25:40.47\00:25:43.20 I've just got to say, oh, wait, 00:25:43.24\00:25:44.57 'cause you asked about the relationship with the cross, 00:25:44.61\00:25:46.98 before we go back to the commandment... 00:25:47.01\00:25:49.08 Okay, you want to weigh in on that? 00:25:49.11\00:25:50.45 Can I weigh in on that? 00:25:50.48\00:25:51.81 Because to me there is something 00:25:51.85\00:25:53.18 very special about this. 00:25:53.21\00:25:54.55 What people seem to not understand often, 00:25:54.58\00:25:58.79 especially the legalist is that salvation 00:25:58.82\00:26:02.09 has always been by grace through faith. 00:26:02.12\00:26:04.33 There is an eternal gospel 00:26:04.36\00:26:06.70 and when God announced this covenant 00:26:06.73\00:26:10.97 in Genesis 3:15 and then, 00:26:11.00\00:26:13.57 you know, He's saying, 00:26:13.64\00:26:14.97 "Hey, I'm going to send one who... 00:26:15.00\00:26:16.57 I'm going to send you the deliverer", 00:26:16.60\00:26:17.94 He will bruise the head of the serpent, 00:26:17.97\00:26:21.04 you know, the serpent will bruise his heel 00:26:21.08\00:26:22.48 but he'll bruise his head. 00:26:22.51\00:26:24.15 Then comes Abraham, 00:26:24.18\00:26:26.48 he gets into this everlasting gospel, 00:26:26.51\00:26:29.82 the covenant that he was justified by faith. 00:26:29.85\00:26:33.56 Now people almost go, "Whoops, 00:26:33.59\00:26:36.66 let's cut the record off here and add the Law of Moses." 00:26:36.73\00:26:40.60 But when you read in Exodus, 00:26:40.63\00:26:43.26 the Bible says that when the Hebrew children 00:26:43.30\00:26:45.60 were in captivity, 00:26:45.63\00:26:49.07 God heard their cry 00:26:49.10\00:26:51.07 and He remembered the covenant with Abraham, 00:26:51.11\00:26:56.41 and Isaac, and Jacob. 00:26:56.44\00:26:58.68 So actually, it is a continuation of the... 00:26:58.71\00:27:02.78 even the law was a continuation of salvation by grace, 00:27:02.82\00:27:07.46 and it all was a shadow. 00:27:07.49\00:27:10.93 You know, when He created this sanctuary for them, 00:27:10.96\00:27:14.00 this was a shadow of things that were to come. 00:27:14.03\00:27:17.57 Christ was the body that cast the shadow. 00:27:17.60\00:27:21.04 So when Christ died on the cross, 00:27:21.07\00:27:23.51 what had transpired was the Jews 00:27:23.54\00:27:27.28 had taken the promises of God. 00:27:27.31\00:27:30.88 And they had made them into this system of rules 00:27:30.95\00:27:34.32 and regulations to which they added, what? 00:27:34.35\00:27:36.48 Nine hundred and thirty more, is that what it is? 00:27:36.52\00:27:38.89 And Christ died to set us free from that. 00:27:38.92\00:27:43.83 He was... 00:27:43.86\00:27:45.19 So to me, legalism, when we find people that, 00:27:45.23\00:27:48.83 you know, they got to wear the blue fringe on their coats 00:27:48.86\00:27:52.73 or something, 00:27:52.77\00:27:54.14 you find people that are going back 00:27:54.17\00:27:55.90 trying to earn their way, it is like to me, 00:27:55.94\00:27:59.17 you are saying, Christ didn't do... 00:27:59.21\00:28:03.11 I mean that didn't point to Christ 00:28:03.14\00:28:05.15 and He didn't achieve that. 00:28:05.18\00:28:07.42 And Paul says in Colossians 2:14, 00:28:07.45\00:28:09.82 when he's talking about that old law, 00:28:09.85\00:28:12.95 that curse that was, 00:28:12.99\00:28:14.32 you know, the law brought a curse and it was against us, 00:28:14.36\00:28:17.66 it got nailed to the cross, well, 00:28:17.69\00:28:19.06 let me read what he goes on to say. 00:28:19.09\00:28:22.06 He says in... 00:28:22.10\00:28:24.43 He says after that, of course, 00:28:24.47\00:28:28.17 "Don't let any man judge you in food, 00:28:28.20\00:28:29.67 or drink, or regarding a festival, 00:28:29.70\00:28:31.44 or a new moon, or Sabbath." 00:28:31.47\00:28:33.01 He's referring back now 00:28:33.04\00:28:34.78 to the special annual Sabbath's, the celebrations. 00:28:34.81\00:28:39.18 And then he says, "They were a shadow of things to come, 00:28:39.21\00:28:41.65 Christ is the substance." 00:28:41.68\00:28:44.02 But then listen, he says, 00:28:44.09\00:28:45.42 "Let no one cheat you out of your reward, 00:28:45.45\00:28:47.89 taking delight in false humility, 00:28:47.92\00:28:50.73 worship of angels, 00:28:50.76\00:28:52.46 intruding into those things which he has not seen vainly 00:28:52.49\00:28:55.83 puffed up by his fleshly mind." 00:28:55.86\00:28:58.30 He's talking about the legalist here. 00:28:58.33\00:29:00.44 "Not holding fast to the head 00:29:00.47\00:29:02.07 from whom all of the body nourished 00:29:02.10\00:29:03.81 and knit together by joints and ligaments 00:29:03.84\00:29:06.07 grows with the increase that is from God. 00:29:06.11\00:29:09.28 Therefore, if you died with Christ 00:29:09.31\00:29:12.08 from the basic principles of the world, 00:29:12.11\00:29:14.32 why is though living in the world 00:29:14.35\00:29:17.59 do you subject yourself to regulations, do not touch, 00:29:17.62\00:29:21.42 do not taste, do not handle, 00:29:21.46\00:29:23.56 which are all concerned things 00:29:23.63\00:29:27.43 which perish with the using according to the commandments 00:29:27.50\00:29:31.13 and doctrines of men. " 00:29:31.17\00:29:33.57 Of men. 00:29:33.64\00:29:34.97 And he said, "These things indeed have an appearance 00:29:35.00\00:29:38.61 of wisdom in self-imposed religion," 00:29:38.64\00:29:42.94 so here we go, that's legalist, an appearance, 00:29:42.98\00:29:46.38 it's the cleaning out up the outside 00:29:46.41\00:29:49.62 but there's no inward change. 00:29:49.65\00:29:51.45 Yes. 00:29:51.49\00:29:52.82 And Christ called them whitewashed tombs, and he said, 00:29:52.85\00:29:56.59 "These things have an appearance of wisdom 00:29:56.62\00:29:58.79 in self-imposed religion, false humility, 00:29:58.83\00:30:01.46 and neglect of the body 00:30:01.50\00:30:04.43 but there have no value 00:30:04.47\00:30:05.80 against the indulgence of the flesh." 00:30:05.83\00:30:08.20 So all of these rules and regulations 00:30:08.24\00:30:10.71 that people come up with, 00:30:10.74\00:30:13.07 if you can't find a thus saith the Lord, 00:30:13.11\00:30:17.08 all you're doing is... 00:30:17.15\00:30:19.88 we do this, we do that, and it's not... 00:30:19.91\00:30:23.42 we are taking away from what Christ accomplished 00:30:23.49\00:30:26.22 on the cross for us because it all pointed to Him. 00:30:26.25\00:30:29.79 Yes, well said, well said. 00:30:29.82\00:30:31.56 That's true. The only thing... 00:30:31.59\00:30:33.50 Go ahead. I'm sorry. 00:30:33.53\00:30:34.86 I was looking a little bit at this earlier today. 00:30:34.90\00:30:36.77 And I had to smile and at the same time 00:30:36.80\00:30:39.37 is it was sad because the devil is so sneaky 00:30:39.40\00:30:45.34 that he gets you going in one direction 00:30:45.37\00:30:50.18 and you lose sight of Christ, 00:30:50.25\00:30:51.98 and it was giving some examples 00:30:52.01\00:30:55.35 of some of those little things that were added on, 00:30:55.38\00:30:58.22 for example about the Sabbath itself. 00:30:58.25\00:31:00.59 And one was that 00:31:00.66\00:31:03.73 some of the Jews refused to eat an egg 00:31:03.76\00:31:05.96 because maybe somebody saw 00:31:05.99\00:31:08.33 when the egg was being laid and "Oh, 00:31:08.36\00:31:11.27 that egg was laid on the Sabbath, 00:31:11.30\00:31:13.13 the chicken broke the commandment, 00:31:13.17\00:31:14.60 therefore you cannot eat that egg." 00:31:14.64\00:31:16.71 And I was like, "What?" 00:31:16.74\00:31:18.11 And then the other one, 00:31:18.14\00:31:19.47 "If you were standing up and you took some food, 00:31:19.51\00:31:23.55 if you took two steps and you didn't swallow it 00:31:23.58\00:31:27.02 you were carrying something, 00:31:27.05\00:31:28.52 therefore you were working on the Sabbath." 00:31:28.55\00:31:30.39 You see? So there were extremes to these things 00:31:30.42\00:31:33.66 that took you away from the Lord 00:31:33.69\00:31:35.92 and focused your mind on the works, the works. 00:31:35.96\00:31:40.10 "And so by the works of the law shall no man be," 00:31:40.13\00:31:45.27 Yes. 00:31:45.30\00:31:46.63 "Justified." 00:31:46.67\00:31:48.00 You see. 00:31:48.04\00:31:49.37 And so but again, 00:31:49.40\00:31:50.81 we have to find what does God want us to understand 00:31:50.84\00:31:55.54 because when you read Romans chapter 7, I think, 00:31:55.58\00:31:59.85 it's verse 12 or 2, I don't remember, He says, 00:31:59.88\00:32:02.28 "Therefore the commandment is holy..." 00:32:02.32\00:32:05.62 "Therefore the law is holy, 00:32:05.65\00:32:06.99 the commandment holy and just and good." 00:32:07.06\00:32:09.36 So if the commandment is holy, just and good, 00:32:09.39\00:32:12.83 what is the balance in here? 00:32:12.86\00:32:14.53 Amen. 00:32:14.56\00:32:15.90 Where does the law fit into grace and the law? 00:32:15.93\00:32:20.34 Where does it fit in God's perfect Christian life? 00:32:20.37\00:32:25.87 Where does the law fit? That's what we got to address. 00:32:25.91\00:32:28.21 Yes, and may I say this? 00:32:28.24\00:32:29.68 Yes, say it. Permission has been granted. 00:32:29.71\00:32:31.31 You know, because I grew up 00:32:31.35\00:32:34.38 being taught the commandments were nailed to the cross, 00:32:34.42\00:32:36.89 and then as I studied that sanctuary, 00:32:36.92\00:32:38.92 and you're looking, 00:32:38.95\00:32:40.29 and this was theology in physical form. 00:32:40.36\00:32:43.19 So you find out the commandments 00:32:43.22\00:32:47.80 that God wrote with His own finger 00:32:47.83\00:32:49.30 and whose finger was that? 00:32:49.33\00:32:50.67 The finger that got nailed to the cross 00:32:50.70\00:32:52.17 because the Bible says, 00:32:52.20\00:32:53.64 "Nothing was created, except by Him", right? 00:32:53.67\00:32:57.04 So the commandment, the finger that... 00:32:57.11\00:33:00.01 the commandments that were written 00:33:00.08\00:33:01.41 by the finger of Christ, 00:33:01.44\00:33:03.01 where were they put? 00:33:03.04\00:33:04.51 Under the mercy seat, inside. 00:33:04.55\00:33:05.95 Inside the ark and that is under the mercy seat, 00:33:05.98\00:33:09.55 I mean, mercy always triumphs law, right? 00:33:09.58\00:33:13.02 Yeah. But that... 00:33:13.05\00:33:14.89 what does the ark represent? 00:33:14.92\00:33:17.56 The judgment of the... 00:33:17.63\00:33:18.96 The throne of God. The throne of God, right. 00:33:18.99\00:33:20.33 So that is the foundation of His government 00:33:20.36\00:33:22.20 with the Ten Commandments. 00:33:22.23\00:33:23.70 Now the Law of Moses, 00:33:23.77\00:33:25.77 which is the book of Deuteronomy, 00:33:25.80\00:33:27.54 is basically what they called The Book of the Law, 00:33:27.57\00:33:30.81 it was rolled up and put in a pocket. 00:33:30.84\00:33:34.01 Yes, the Ten Commandments 00:33:34.08\00:33:35.41 were in it as the heart of the covenant 00:33:35.44\00:33:37.75 but the Ten Commandments 00:33:37.78\00:33:39.11 are the heart of the everlasting... 00:33:39.15\00:33:40.75 I mean, the moral law is part of the everlasting covenant, 00:33:40.82\00:33:46.22 the everlasting gospel 'cause you get to Hebrews 00:33:46.25\00:33:49.49 and what does He say in Hebrews 8:10? 00:33:49.52\00:33:52.89 That God is going to write His law on our hearts 00:33:52.93\00:33:57.40 and put Him in our minds 00:33:57.47\00:33:58.93 and then He's going to work in us to will and 00:33:58.97\00:34:01.64 to do His good pleasure. 00:34:01.67\00:34:03.00 And what is interesting is that 00:34:03.04\00:34:04.37 when you go to Deuteronomy 29 and 31, 00:34:04.41\00:34:06.98 you'll find that the part of the law 00:34:07.01\00:34:09.51 that was put on a side was put there 00:34:09.54\00:34:12.81 for a witness against it. 00:34:12.85\00:34:14.22 Against the... 00:34:14.25\00:34:15.58 If you use that language, and then you go to Colossians, 00:34:15.62\00:34:17.49 what's there? One see the cross? 00:34:17.52\00:34:18.89 That part, well, that was a witness against you. 00:34:18.92\00:34:21.66 So there was never any dictum 00:34:21.69\00:34:23.36 made about the Ten Commandments. 00:34:23.43\00:34:25.23 There'll always be a transcript of the character of God 00:34:25.26\00:34:28.76 and as such as eternal as God is Himself. 00:34:28.80\00:34:31.30 You know, this idea of trying to do right, 00:34:31.33\00:34:35.07 you can with a lot of effort for short periods of time... 00:34:35.10\00:34:41.44 accomplish certain things. Very short. 00:34:41.48\00:34:42.98 You know, say, you are a smoker, you can with will, 00:34:43.01\00:34:47.98 some days you get up and you got the will. 00:34:48.02\00:34:49.78 "You know, today, I will not smoke." 00:34:49.82\00:34:51.25 And you don't, you don't. 00:34:51.29\00:34:52.95 So you've done a nice deed. 00:34:52.99\00:34:55.99 But you haven't gotten the victory over smoking 00:34:56.02\00:34:59.89 because you haven't asked for forgiveness, 00:34:59.93\00:35:02.63 that sin can rise up and condemn you. 00:35:02.66\00:35:05.30 So only those things that are done 00:35:05.33\00:35:07.07 through the power of Jesus Christ 00:35:07.14\00:35:09.10 are really washed away, which is why you have this... 00:35:09.14\00:35:13.38 What seems like a confusing thing 00:35:13.41\00:35:15.31 in the 1, 2, and 3 John, three times, he says, 00:35:15.34\00:35:17.75 "Those who are in Christ, do not sin." 00:35:17.78\00:35:20.75 Then in 1 John 2:1, you got "And if you do sin, 00:35:20.82\00:35:24.22 you got an advocate with the Father." 00:35:24.29\00:35:25.62 "So what is up with that? 00:35:25.65\00:35:26.99 You know, where is this truth? Do I not sin? 00:35:27.02\00:35:30.23 Or do I have an advocate with the Father?" 00:35:30.26\00:35:31.76 Of course, Shelley, as you well know, 00:35:31.79\00:35:33.53 that's in the... 00:35:33.60\00:35:35.73 Imperfect tense, which means you do not continue to sin. 00:35:35.76\00:35:38.47 As a pattern of life. Precisely. 00:35:38.50\00:35:40.34 But if somebody trips you up or if you stumble yourself, 00:35:40.37\00:35:44.34 God has taken care of that. 00:35:44.37\00:35:46.14 He's giving you an advocate with the Father, 00:35:46.17\00:35:47.74 you're in Christ the righteous to take care of those things. 00:35:47.78\00:35:52.28 That is something done forensicly outside of you. 00:35:52.31\00:35:55.18 That's a provision that God has made for you 00:35:55.22\00:35:59.45 so that you can be justified and remain justified 00:35:59.49\00:36:03.53 while the sanctification process is taking place 00:36:03.56\00:36:06.46 in your life. 00:36:06.49\00:36:07.83 He's looking at you as better 00:36:07.86\00:36:09.53 while He is actually making you better. 00:36:09.56\00:36:11.97 So those are provisions that He has given for you, 00:36:12.00\00:36:14.34 so you need not try to be sinless. 00:36:14.37\00:36:19.04 What you need to try to do 00:36:19.07\00:36:20.81 is stay on Jesus' side, you know. 00:36:20.88\00:36:23.35 Apply Christ, I say, at the point of attack. 00:36:23.38\00:36:26.25 You know, if he's attacking heart, 00:36:26.28\00:36:27.62 put Christ here. 00:36:27.65\00:36:28.98 If he's messing with your head, put Christ here. 00:36:29.02\00:36:30.59 If he's going through your ears, 00:36:30.62\00:36:31.95 put Christ here. 00:36:31.99\00:36:33.32 But put Christ at the point of attack. 00:36:33.36\00:36:34.69 Amen. 00:36:34.72\00:36:36.06 So when temptation comes, I don't say, 00:36:36.09\00:36:37.43 "How am I not going to not be mad at Ryan?" 00:36:37.46\00:36:39.06 I say, "How am I going to serve Jesus?" 00:36:39.09\00:36:40.43 Amen. 00:36:40.50\00:36:41.83 And then Jesus takes care of that mad thing. 00:36:41.86\00:36:43.20 Amen. That's right. 00:36:43.23\00:36:44.57 But, Ryan, you didn't grow up being taught 00:36:44.60\00:36:45.93 that you to obey the Ten Commandments, 00:36:45.97\00:36:48.47 what convinced you that it was necessary 00:36:48.50\00:36:51.81 to keep the commandments? 00:36:51.84\00:36:53.17 Well, you know, it's interesting 00:36:53.21\00:36:54.54 because I remember in, 00:36:54.58\00:36:57.15 what we call, Sabbath school 00:36:57.18\00:36:58.98 for Sunday keepers at Sunday school. 00:36:59.01\00:37:01.15 So I remember, you know, 00:37:01.18\00:37:02.65 attending Sunday school as a child, you know, 00:37:02.68\00:37:05.12 and every single year was like a cyclical thing, 00:37:05.15\00:37:08.02 and I think probably still in most churches today, 00:37:08.06\00:37:11.23 people do this, and it's quite ironic 00:37:11.26\00:37:13.16 that in Sunday school we teach the children 00:37:13.19\00:37:15.33 the Ten Commandments. 00:37:15.36\00:37:16.87 You know, there's this ongoing, 00:37:16.90\00:37:18.60 you know, there's several lessons, 00:37:18.63\00:37:20.14 and you quote the commandments, 00:37:20.17\00:37:21.90 and, you know have your memory verse 00:37:21.94\00:37:23.54 is on the commandments. 00:37:23.61\00:37:24.94 And so it's taught to you to learn and memorize 00:37:24.97\00:37:27.88 the Ten Commandments as a child. 00:37:27.91\00:37:29.24 But what always confused me as I got older, 00:37:29.28\00:37:31.38 as I started getting up into, you know, the teenage classes 00:37:31.41\00:37:35.78 and then the early adult classes, 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.49 then what was taught to me and told for me to remember 00:37:37.52\00:37:40.86 was then it was quiet reversed when I got older, 00:37:40.89\00:37:43.56 you know what it's... 00:37:43.63\00:37:44.96 Those are done away with, we don't have to keep those. 00:37:44.99\00:37:46.33 Yes. 00:37:46.36\00:37:47.70 And so while there wasn't maybe full sermons delivered 00:37:47.73\00:37:51.17 or any type of entire messages that, 00:37:51.20\00:37:53.00 you know, where pastors, 00:37:53.03\00:37:54.47 you know, secluded or isolated the Ten Commandments 00:37:54.50\00:37:56.91 and were taught us not to keep them. 00:37:56.94\00:37:59.21 It was certainly not something that was taught to keep. 00:37:59.24\00:38:01.84 Yes. 00:38:01.88\00:38:03.21 And so I think the gaping question, 00:38:03.24\00:38:05.21 we've kind of all suddenly brought the commandments 00:38:05.25\00:38:08.78 into this conversation, 00:38:08.82\00:38:10.19 and I think when you're dealing 00:38:10.22\00:38:11.55 with the concept of legalism, 00:38:11.59\00:38:12.92 that's usually where the focus comes down to 00:38:12.95\00:38:16.22 is the Ten Commandments. 00:38:16.26\00:38:17.63 "Do I have to obey the law? 00:38:17.66\00:38:18.99 Do I have to keep the law to be saved? 00:38:19.03\00:38:21.36 Is it necessary for me to perfectly keep 00:38:21.40\00:38:25.37 and obey all the Ten Commandments?" 00:38:25.40\00:38:27.44 And, you know, 00:38:27.47\00:38:29.80 I like to usually tell people in Bible study 00:38:29.84\00:38:31.57 if we're discussing the Ten Commandments is that, 00:38:31.61\00:38:33.71 you know, the Ten Commandments or keeping of the law 00:38:33.78\00:38:36.21 is not the means by which we are saved. 00:38:36.24\00:38:37.85 Amen. 00:38:37.88\00:38:39.21 We do not obtain, for those of you at home, 00:38:39.25\00:38:40.62 obviously we know this, we don't... 00:38:40.65\00:38:42.55 The Bible makes it very clear, 00:38:42.58\00:38:43.92 we do not gain salvation or eternal life 00:38:43.99\00:38:46.76 by the perfect adherence to or keeping 00:38:46.79\00:38:49.29 of the Ten Commandments. 00:38:49.32\00:38:50.66 Amen. 00:38:50.73\00:38:52.06 But I will say that keeping of the law, 00:38:52.09\00:38:55.16 the keeping of the Ten Commandments 00:38:55.20\00:38:56.53 is a natural response of someone 00:38:56.56\00:39:00.27 who is in a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. 00:39:00.34\00:39:03.51 And so I made a note here because someone, 00:39:03.54\00:39:06.78 you know, had this down through the years travelling, 00:39:06.81\00:39:08.51 and going into homes, and visiting people, 00:39:08.54\00:39:10.58 which is a major part of evangelistic ministry, 00:39:10.65\00:39:13.15 you're going to have those questions. 00:39:13.18\00:39:14.55 And so, you know, people try to use personal logic to say, 00:39:14.58\00:39:17.29 "Well, if we're not saved 00:39:17.32\00:39:19.49 by the keeping of the commandments? 00:39:19.52\00:39:21.29 Well, then that must mean also that I cannot miss out 00:39:21.32\00:39:24.96 on the kingdom of God if I break the commandments 00:39:24.99\00:39:28.46 or if I do not keep the commandments." 00:39:28.50\00:39:30.97 And so it's interesting to me that, 00:39:31.00\00:39:34.90 you know, I put a note here, 00:39:34.94\00:39:36.50 can disobedience to God's law cost us our salvation? 00:39:36.54\00:39:41.21 I want to read this text here, 00:39:41.24\00:39:42.68 and I think we'll probably all head in this direction, 00:39:42.71\00:39:45.51 but I think Matthew 7 00:39:45.55\00:39:47.65 is one of the most interesting... 00:39:47.68\00:39:49.02 There's a passage, and, of course, as you know, 00:39:49.05\00:39:51.39 Matthew 7 is the continuation and ultimately the ending 00:39:51.42\00:39:55.82 of Jesus' sermon on the mountain. 00:39:55.86\00:39:57.99 And Jesus says this in Matthew 7:21, 00:39:58.03\00:40:01.60 "Not everyone who says to Me, 00:40:01.63\00:40:03.97 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven." 00:40:04.00\00:40:06.03 Amen. Okay? 00:40:06.07\00:40:08.17 "But he who does the will of My Father in heaven." 00:40:08.20\00:40:12.24 And so the question, 00:40:12.27\00:40:13.61 I think, many people need to be asking is, 00:40:13.68\00:40:15.01 "What is the will of God biblically?" 00:40:15.04\00:40:17.25 Now I think there's many scriptures 00:40:17.28\00:40:19.11 that clearly communicate this, you know, 00:40:19.15\00:40:21.18 across the spectrum of the Bible. 00:40:21.22\00:40:23.39 But one text that comes to my mind 00:40:23.42\00:40:25.15 is when you're reading Psalms 40:8, 00:40:25.19\00:40:27.46 this is what the psalmist wrote, he says, 00:40:27.49\00:40:28.86 "I delight to do Your will, O my God, 00:40:28.89\00:40:32.16 and Your law is within my heart." 00:40:32.19\00:40:34.83 So there's kind of a correlation there, 00:40:34.86\00:40:36.77 doing the will of God, your law is within me. 00:40:36.80\00:40:39.63 So continue reading, He says, 00:40:39.67\00:40:41.00 "But those who do the will of My Father in heaven, 00:40:41.04\00:40:43.61 many will say to Me on that day, 00:40:43.64\00:40:44.97 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name? 00:40:45.01\00:40:47.98 Cast out demons in Your name? 00:40:48.01\00:40:49.38 Done many wonders in Your name,'" 00:40:49.41\00:40:50.78 and I like to pause here and mention that, 00:40:50.85\00:40:53.72 who does these things? 00:40:53.75\00:40:56.12 First of all, who calls the Lord Lord? 00:40:56.15\00:40:57.72 Yeah. Believers. 00:40:57.75\00:40:59.35 Okay, so Jesus is addressing professed believers, 00:40:59.39\00:41:03.22 people who would call out on the name of God. 00:41:03.26\00:41:05.09 And then He says down here, notice, it says, "And then..." 00:41:05.13\00:41:07.20 This is verse 23, "And then I will declare to them 00:41:07.23\00:41:11.30 I never knew you, depart from Me 00:41:11.33\00:41:14.67 you who practice..." 00:41:14.70\00:41:16.04 And this is the New King James Version, "Lawlessness." 00:41:16.07\00:41:18.34 King James Version will say "iniquity", same thing. 00:41:18.37\00:41:21.28 "I never knew you," when I read this passage as a young man, 00:41:21.31\00:41:24.31 this is what really got me, and to answer your question, 00:41:24.35\00:41:26.65 as a young man, I read this passage, 00:41:26.72\00:41:28.05 and I remember thinking to myself, 00:41:28.08\00:41:29.95 "Lord, is it possible that I could be going 00:41:29.98\00:41:33.22 through this entire life telling everyone, 00:41:33.25\00:41:35.16 "Yeah, I'm saved, I'm saved, I know Jesus," 00:41:35.19\00:41:38.19 but get down to the end of time 00:41:38.23\00:41:40.40 only to hear those most haunting words 00:41:40.43\00:41:42.76 come from my Savior, "I don't know you.'" 00:41:42.80\00:41:44.60 Amen. 00:41:44.63\00:41:45.97 And I remember God led me on a very short 00:41:46.00\00:41:47.97 but very profound study of the Word. 00:41:48.00\00:41:52.07 We all know the text where Jesus says in John 17: 3, 00:41:52.11\00:41:55.58 "And this is eternal life that they may," 00:41:55.61\00:41:58.51 there's the word, "know you." 00:41:58.55\00:42:00.52 Remember when Jesus said, "Depart from Me, 00:42:00.55\00:42:02.28 I do not know you." 00:42:02.32\00:42:03.79 So here it is, John 17:3, 00:42:03.82\00:42:06.19 "And this is eternal life that they may know you, 00:42:06.22\00:42:08.89 the only true God and Jesus Christ 00:42:08.92\00:42:11.26 whom You have sent." 00:42:11.29\00:42:12.63 So it's eternal life to know God, 00:42:12.66\00:42:15.53 and the Greek word I found there for the word "know", 00:42:15.56\00:42:17.47 it's an interesting word, you pronounce it ginosko. 00:42:17.50\00:42:20.67 And it literally means, in the original Greek, 00:42:20.74\00:42:22.80 to know very close, to know in a deep, intimate way. 00:42:22.84\00:42:26.68 So not just, you know, "Oh, yeah, that's John, 00:42:26.71\00:42:29.08 I've heard of him," but to really truly know him. 00:42:29.11\00:42:33.45 I was reading 1 John 2:3, one day. 00:42:33.52\00:42:38.02 Again, that question in my mind, 00:42:38.05\00:42:39.39 "Lord, how can I truly know You?" 00:42:39.42\00:42:41.79 Again, with this idea in my mind that, you know what, 00:42:41.82\00:42:44.43 "I want to be saved, I want to truly know God, 00:42:44.46\00:42:46.80 but, Lord, I've been told 00:42:46.83\00:42:48.53 that I don't have to be obedient to Your law 00:42:48.56\00:42:50.80 as long as I just love Jesus and continue on with, 00:42:50.87\00:42:53.87 you know, my relationship." 00:42:53.94\00:42:55.40 But right here, 1 John 2:3, he says, 00:42:55.44\00:42:57.81 "Now by this, we know," same word, ginosko, 00:42:57.84\00:43:01.98 "that we know Him," ginosko, "if we keep His commandments." 00:43:02.01\00:43:07.62 And then in verse 6, he says, "He who says he abides in Him 00:43:07.65\00:43:10.79 ought himself also to walk just as He walked." 00:43:10.82\00:43:15.39 And you mentioned that earlier. Yeah. 00:43:15.42\00:43:17.03 Well, I deliberately stopped before 3 00:43:17.06\00:43:18.39 because I figured someone's going to hit it. 00:43:18.43\00:43:20.50 Amen. It's too strong not to... 00:43:20.53\00:43:22.83 Absolutely. 00:43:22.86\00:43:24.20 Yeah. I have to... 00:43:24.27\00:43:26.37 He is sitting here punching me because he was... 00:43:26.40\00:43:28.90 I did not punch you, I'm sorry. 00:43:28.94\00:43:31.27 Anyway, he translated my sermon this past Sabbath, 00:43:31.31\00:43:36.01 and my sermon this past Sabbath was "Know That You Know". 00:43:36.04\00:43:39.78 And so a lot of this was in here. 00:43:39.81\00:43:41.55 But I have to just say this 'cause it's so important. 00:43:41.58\00:43:45.02 Every now and then, someone will say, 00:43:45.05\00:43:47.26 "Oh, you're a legalist," 00:43:47.29\00:43:48.89 'cause you believe in keeping the Ten Commandments. 00:43:48.92\00:43:52.86 Let me read to you why I keep God's commandments. 00:43:52.89\00:43:57.77 1 John 5:3, I mean, you can just go to 1 John, 00:43:57.80\00:44:00.57 and you're going to have the whole thing here. 00:44:00.64\00:44:03.24 He says, "This is the love of God 00:44:03.27\00:44:07.64 that we keep His commandments, 00:44:07.68\00:44:10.68 and His commandments are not burdensome." 00:44:10.75\00:44:12.35 Amen. 00:44:12.38\00:44:13.72 See, when you look at the Ten Commandments, 00:44:13.75\00:44:15.68 number one, they were written in the past tense. 00:44:15.72\00:44:19.79 You know what that means? I mean, in the future tense. 00:44:19.82\00:44:22.52 In future tense. Yes. 00:44:22.56\00:44:23.93 No! Past tense. 00:44:23.96\00:44:25.29 No, they were written in the past tense, yes. 00:44:25.33\00:44:27.13 Yes, past tense. Because... 00:44:27.20\00:44:29.16 And what that means is it's promised. 00:44:29.20\00:44:31.37 God was saying, "Hey, when you're 00:44:31.40\00:44:33.10 in covenant relationship with Me, 00:44:33.13\00:44:35.54 you're not going to have any other gods before Me. 00:44:35.57\00:44:38.44 You're not going to bow down to idols. 00:44:38.47\00:44:41.54 You are not going to take My name in vain. 00:44:41.58\00:44:44.85 You can't wait to celebrate the Sabbath with Me. 00:44:44.88\00:44:47.62 You won't... 00:44:47.65\00:44:49.05 You'll honor your father and mother, 00:44:49.08\00:44:50.42 you won't commit murder, adultery, or you won't steal, 00:44:50.49\00:44:52.39 you won't bear false testimony, 00:44:52.42\00:44:54.26 you won't covet because that's what living 00:44:54.29\00:44:57.93 in covenant relationship with Me is all about. 00:44:57.96\00:45:01.10 I'm going to do this for you 00:45:01.13\00:45:02.46 as I work in you to willing to do your good pleasure." 00:45:02.50\00:45:05.87 And I guarantee you, if I say, 00:45:05.90\00:45:07.64 "Well, I don't serve any other gods." 00:45:07.67\00:45:09.37 Nobody says, "Oh, you're legalistic, 00:45:09.40\00:45:11.64 but you're keeping that commandment." 00:45:11.67\00:45:14.08 It is obedience is, to me, the highest form of worship. 00:45:14.11\00:45:20.72 That is true. 00:45:20.75\00:45:22.08 It is an expression of loyalty and love to God. 00:45:22.12\00:45:28.42 And He says right here, this is love for God 00:45:28.46\00:45:32.53 that you obey His commandments. 00:45:32.56\00:45:34.76 So it's as we are walking in obedience, 00:45:34.80\00:45:41.34 this is where it is, and, you know, 00:45:41.37\00:45:42.70 Hebrews 5:9, nobody ever uses that scripture. 00:45:42.74\00:45:45.77 You know what the Hebrews 5:9 says? 00:45:45.81\00:45:47.98 It says that, "He, Christ, once He was perfect, 00:45:48.01\00:45:51.38 He became the author of eternal salvation 00:45:51.41\00:45:55.55 for all who obey Him." 00:45:55.58\00:45:58.05 Obey Him, yes, yes. 00:45:58.09\00:45:59.82 Obedience, you cannot get around it. 00:45:59.85\00:46:02.89 And even in our early church, 00:46:02.92\00:46:04.99 there was this tension between obedience and grace 00:46:05.03\00:46:09.60 and thank goodness, grace won out. 00:46:09.63\00:46:11.53 But not to the neglect of obedience, 00:46:11.57\00:46:14.14 it's just where does the obedience come from. 00:46:14.17\00:46:16.54 Yeah. Truth be told, when... 00:46:16.57\00:46:19.51 Everybody here is married, if someone said, 00:46:19.54\00:46:23.58 "Shelley, you're not allowed to cheat on JD." 00:46:23.65\00:46:25.98 You've been married how many years, couple? 00:46:26.01\00:46:27.55 Thirty something plus, yeah. 00:46:27.62\00:46:28.95 Yeah, more or less. Yeah, who's counting? 00:46:28.98\00:46:30.79 You're not allowed to hear... Is that legalism? 00:46:30.82\00:46:33.36 No. Yeah. Ryan, is it... 00:46:33.39\00:46:35.19 You have a cute little wife, is that legalism? 00:46:35.22\00:46:37.43 Absolutely not. Yeah. 00:46:37.46\00:46:38.79 And it's funny because I know where you're going with this. 00:46:38.83\00:46:40.90 When you go through those Ten Commandments... 00:46:40.93\00:46:42.26 Precisely. 00:46:42.30\00:46:43.67 No one ever considers it legalism 00:46:43.70\00:46:45.07 to not worship other gods 00:46:45.10\00:46:46.43 or to, you know, bear false witness, or... 00:46:46.47\00:46:49.27 But there is one. There is one. 00:46:49.30\00:46:50.84 There is one of the ten 00:46:50.91\00:46:52.24 that people tend to automatically associate 00:46:52.27\00:46:55.88 with a legalistic mindset. 00:46:55.91\00:46:58.11 And, of course, we know 00:46:58.15\00:46:59.48 that's the keeping of the fourth commandment, 00:46:59.51\00:47:00.85 the Sabbath. 00:47:00.92\00:47:02.25 Yeah. Amen. 00:47:02.28\00:47:03.62 Which is why in John 14:15, He says, "If you love me," 00:47:03.65\00:47:05.25 preexisting condition, "keep My commandments." 00:47:05.29\00:47:07.59 And if you don't love Him, 00:47:07.66\00:47:08.99 you really can't do that anyway. 00:47:09.02\00:47:10.93 It has to be a response of love. 00:47:10.96\00:47:13.06 I teach people because my wife has cold feet, 00:47:13.09\00:47:15.60 and, you know, 00:47:15.63\00:47:18.40 just when you're in that embryo, 00:47:18.43\00:47:19.90 getting ready to go to sleep, you're just about there, 00:47:19.93\00:47:24.11 and here comes the cold feet, it's like, "Ooh, I'm awake." 00:47:24.14\00:47:26.37 Yeah, that's right. But it's... 00:47:26.41\00:47:29.94 You've been married X number of years, 00:47:29.98\00:47:31.85 that's you signed on for, you know 00:47:31.88\00:47:33.65 and there are other kind of things you sign up for, 00:47:33.72\00:47:35.38 and it's not burdensome. 00:47:35.42\00:47:37.85 You know, it's part of the relationship. 00:47:37.89\00:47:39.35 Well, that's exactly what you've been saying. 00:47:39.39\00:47:42.76 You see, when the focus is 00:47:42.79\00:47:44.76 I love God, I want to please Him, 00:47:44.79\00:47:47.86 I want to serve Him, I want to honor Him, 00:47:47.90\00:47:51.53 then keeping the commandments is a delight, not a burden, 00:47:51.57\00:47:55.87 not a way to salvation. 00:47:55.90\00:47:57.91 But you do it because you love God. 00:47:57.94\00:48:00.28 And that's what it is. 00:48:00.31\00:48:01.64 He says, the first thing in Great Commandment, 00:48:01.68\00:48:03.88 "Love the Lord, your God with all your heart, 00:48:03.95\00:48:05.58 all your mind, all your soul." 00:48:05.61\00:48:08.25 This is the reason for keeping the commandments 00:48:08.28\00:48:10.69 and your neighbor as yourself. 00:48:10.72\00:48:12.59 And so this love of God leads us to seek to please Him 00:48:12.62\00:48:18.76 in all points, in all things. 00:48:18.79\00:48:22.23 And we have to remember, we don't obey by our own power, 00:48:22.26\00:48:26.20 even obedience is by grace. 00:48:26.23\00:48:27.67 Yes, it is. 00:48:27.70\00:48:29.04 It is as, "God works in us 00:48:29.07\00:48:30.41 to will and to do His good pleasures," 00:48:30.44\00:48:31.77 is what He says in Philippians 2:12. 00:48:31.81\00:48:33.61 Let me throw in two... 00:48:33.68\00:48:35.01 I know you're running out of time, 00:48:35.04\00:48:36.38 I want to throw these two in. Romans 6:16. 00:48:36.41\00:48:39.91 "Do you not know that to whom you present yourself 00:48:39.95\00:48:43.15 slaves to obey, you are that one slaves 00:48:43.18\00:48:46.39 whom you obey, whether of sin," 00:48:46.42\00:48:49.29 and we're going to either be on one side or the other, 00:48:49.32\00:48:51.63 "you can either be a slave to sin 00:48:51.66\00:48:55.23 which leads to death 00:48:55.26\00:48:56.97 or of obedience leading to righteousness." 00:48:57.00\00:49:00.57 Christ came to destroy the works of the devil, 00:49:00.64\00:49:03.54 and He wants to work in us 00:49:03.61\00:49:05.47 to will and to do His good pleasure, 00:49:05.51\00:49:07.48 to lead us on obedience so that we are... 00:49:07.51\00:49:10.95 It's righteousness by faith, 00:49:10.98\00:49:13.21 but listen to what 1 John 3:7 says, 00:49:13.25\00:49:17.99 "Little children, let no one deceive you, 00:49:18.02\00:49:19.99 he who practices righteousness is righteous, 00:49:20.06\00:49:23.36 just as he is righteous. 00:49:23.43\00:49:24.86 He who sins is of the devil, 00:49:24.89\00:49:26.80 for the devil has sinned from the beginning. 00:49:26.83\00:49:28.33 For this purpose, the Son of God was manifested 00:49:28.36\00:49:30.80 that He might destroy the works of the devil." 00:49:30.87\00:49:33.20 Yes. So faith without works is dead. 00:49:33.23\00:49:36.10 When we come to the Lord and believe, 00:49:36.14\00:49:38.57 we yield, we surrender, control to Him, 00:49:38.61\00:49:41.88 then He works in us to will and to do. 00:49:41.91\00:49:44.28 He is not going to lead us down the path of lawlessness 00:49:44.31\00:49:47.82 which is sin. 00:49:47.85\00:49:50.29 I like to say this because... 00:49:50.32\00:49:53.49 In a way, for me, it's an easy way to look at it, you know. 00:49:53.56\00:49:56.52 Do we have to keep the commandments? 00:49:56.56\00:49:58.36 And there are those that say, 00:49:58.39\00:49:59.73 "Oh, no. We don't have to keep the commandments." 00:49:59.76\00:50:02.10 Well, when you go to heaven, 00:50:02.13\00:50:03.90 is it going to be okay to steal, to kill, 00:50:03.97\00:50:07.24 to commit adultery, to covet, to have other gods? 00:50:07.27\00:50:11.47 Of course, you're going to say no. 00:50:11.51\00:50:13.48 And if it's not going to be okay in heaven, 00:50:13.51\00:50:15.54 it should not be okay on this earth. 00:50:15.58\00:50:17.65 And so I like to read here in James 2 00:50:17.68\00:50:21.22 and because of time, read only verse 11. 00:50:21.25\00:50:25.52 No, no, verse 12. 00:50:25.55\00:50:26.96 "So speak ye and so do, as they that will be judged 00:50:26.99\00:50:30.93 by the law of liberty." 00:50:30.96\00:50:33.03 Wow, look at that James, also the law of liberty. 00:50:33.06\00:50:36.03 That's right. 00:50:36.06\00:50:37.40 Because if you don't, you're going to sin 00:50:37.47\00:50:39.60 and you're going to be a slave to sin, 00:50:39.63\00:50:41.20 you don't have liberty, you don't have Christ. 00:50:41.24\00:50:42.80 Amen. 00:50:42.84\00:50:44.21 You need Christ, Christ is liberty, 00:50:44.24\00:50:46.34 loving Him is seeking to please Him. 00:50:46.37\00:50:49.31 All right, love it, love it, love it. 00:50:49.34\00:50:51.01 That's right. 00:50:51.05\00:50:52.38 Let's do this because we're running out... 00:50:52.41\00:50:53.92 I want you to prepare your minds and hearts 00:50:53.95\00:50:55.65 for a short summary statement 00:50:55.68\00:50:57.42 after we come back from our news break 00:50:57.49\00:50:59.75 'cause this hour has gone so incredibly fast. 00:50:59.79\00:51:01.72 I want to just touch on a text very, very quickly. 00:51:01.76\00:51:03.96 We're in 1 John, and we could really 00:51:04.03\00:51:05.36 just sort of park the car and pull over to the curb 00:51:05.39\00:51:07.03 at 1 John and stay there. 00:51:07.10\00:51:08.43 It's very good. And exhaust this whole thing. 00:51:08.46\00:51:11.33 But 1 John 2:7, 00:51:11.37\00:51:13.23 you know, someone ran up to me, and they said, 00:51:13.27\00:51:15.04 "Bible's talking out of both sides of its mouth." 00:51:15.07\00:51:17.04 "Brethren, I write no new commandment to you 00:51:17.11\00:51:19.24 but an old commandment, 00:51:19.27\00:51:20.61 which you have heard from the beginning. 00:51:20.68\00:51:22.01 The old commandment is the word 00:51:22.04\00:51:23.75 which you've heard from the beginning." 00:51:23.78\00:51:25.11 Then next verse, verse 8, 00:51:25.15\00:51:26.65 "Again, a new commandment I write to you, 00:51:26.72\00:51:29.52 which thing is true in him and in you." 00:51:29.55\00:51:32.25 And they were saying, "Well, the Bible is speaking 00:51:32.29\00:51:33.66 out of both sided of its mouth." 00:51:33.69\00:51:35.02 It is not. 00:51:35.06\00:51:36.42 I don't remember the Greek words, 00:51:36.46\00:51:37.79 one sounds like mayonnaise, just that's in my mind. 00:51:37.83\00:51:40.73 But what Christ is saying, "It's not a new thing, 00:51:40.80\00:51:42.93 it's a new thing to you." 00:51:42.96\00:51:44.30 Yes. 00:51:44.33\00:51:45.67 Because you're thinking that you're free 00:51:45.70\00:51:47.04 from keeping commandments 00:51:47.07\00:51:48.40 because of what I did, that's the "in Him" part. 00:51:48.44\00:51:49.77 It's not new. 00:51:49.80\00:51:51.14 It's the same commandment from the very beginning. 00:51:51.17\00:51:53.38 It is not brand new. 00:51:53.41\00:51:54.74 It's new to you because you haven't heard it before. 00:51:54.78\00:51:56.11 It's like buying a new car, a second-hand car, 00:51:56.14\00:51:58.95 it's new to you, but it's not a new car, you know. 00:51:58.98\00:52:01.28 Same old car, just new to you. 00:52:01.32\00:52:03.08 And Christ is saying that, "It's not..." 00:52:03.12\00:52:04.62 "It's the same old gospel, the same truth that 00:52:04.65\00:52:07.92 that we are saved by grace, 00:52:07.96\00:52:09.49 not through our labors or through our efforts." 00:52:09.52\00:52:13.23 We're going to go to our news break now, 00:52:13.26\00:52:14.60 and then I want you to prepare, each of you, 00:52:14.63\00:52:16.06 for a closing statement, a little bow tied on this 00:52:16.10\00:52:19.80 very, very interesting subject. 00:52:19.83\00:52:21.47 Let's go to the news break just now. 00:52:21.50\00:52:23.07
