Okay. 00:03:15.72\00:03:17.33 So my journey has taken me through music, 00:03:17.43\00:03:21.53 towards missions. 00:03:21.56\00:03:22.90 Okay. Okay. 00:03:22.93\00:03:24.27 The thing that I always did 00:03:24.30\00:03:25.63 when I serve the church as a child was play music, 00:03:25.67\00:03:28.74 but what I've learned through my journey 00:03:28.77\00:03:30.57 is that the Great Commission is for everybody 00:03:30.67\00:03:34.24 and the way to do the Great Commission most successfully 00:03:34.28\00:03:37.51 is to be involved in Christ method of reaching people. 00:03:37.55\00:03:39.65 That's right. 00:03:39.68\00:03:41.02 So now I am combining 00:03:41.05\00:03:42.78 the skill of music with the vision 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.85 of what Christ method of reaching people can bring. 00:03:45.89\00:03:48.92 That's right. 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.29 Bringing people to the kingdom of God. 00:03:50.39\00:03:52.13 Okay, through the gift of, that's music, 00:03:52.16\00:03:54.96 but also has a mission connected to it. 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.90 That's right. 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.27 And you from the West Indies to be very frank about it... 00:03:58.30\00:03:59.63 Yes. 00:03:59.67\00:04:01.07 Right down a chain of Caribbean islands... 00:04:01.10\00:04:02.44 That's right. 00:04:02.47\00:04:03.81 If you look at it, you know, 00:04:03.84\00:04:05.17 my family some of them from St. Thomas, 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.54 and I was raised by a lady from Trinidad, 00:04:06.57\00:04:08.14 and husband from Barbados, so it's all down in that chain. 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.65 Yes. 00:04:10.68\00:04:12.01 And the beautiful Caribbean and the Grenadines... 00:04:12.05\00:04:14.02 So you know about good food. 00:04:14.05\00:04:15.58 Oh, yeah. 00:04:15.62\00:04:17.49 I have the advantage of the Caribbean flavors 00:04:17.59\00:04:19.95 and my ancestry goes back to India. 00:04:20.06\00:04:21.76 Yes. 00:04:21.79\00:04:23.12 And I'm fourth generation Vincentian. 00:04:23.16\00:04:25.66 Okay. What is that? 00:04:25.69\00:04:27.10 From St. Vincent... 00:04:27.13\00:04:28.43 Oh, from St. Vincent, okay. 00:04:28.46\00:04:29.80 All right, of Indian descent, 00:04:29.83\00:04:31.17 and so I come through 00:04:31.20\00:04:33.30 an indentured sort of ancestry 00:04:33.34\00:04:37.61 where my ancestors were brought to the Caribbean 00:04:37.64\00:04:40.54 after slavery was abolished, you know, 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.71 indentured labor was just another fancy term for slavery. 00:04:43.81\00:04:46.25 So they were basically brought the slaves 00:04:46.28\00:04:48.58 after the African slave trade died. 00:04:48.62\00:04:52.39 But through that God brought Christianity to my family 00:04:52.42\00:04:57.09 and this has really impacted 00:04:57.13\00:04:59.26 a few of the things that I'm doing now. 00:04:59.29\00:05:01.60 So your generational connections from India, 00:05:01.63\00:05:04.70 and then you reach all the way across the world 00:05:04.73\00:05:06.94 down to the Grenadines and St. Vincent? 00:05:06.97\00:05:09.04 That's right. 00:05:09.07\00:05:10.41 But tell us a little about your background 00:05:10.51\00:05:12.64 because when you think about Missions and Music, 00:05:12.67\00:05:16.85 somewhere along the way there had to be a decision 00:05:16.95\00:05:19.68 that this is what the Lord was calling you to do, 00:05:19.71\00:05:21.52 talk about that? 00:05:21.55\00:05:22.88 Yes. 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.29 Well, first of all, 00:05:24.32\00:05:25.65 I realized from a young age that I had a musical ear. 00:05:25.69\00:05:30.53 I could harmonize growing up from young age 00:05:30.63\00:05:34.30 and I kind of thought everybody could hear that, 00:05:34.30\00:05:39.13 you know, but I realized that 00:05:39.17\00:05:40.50 not everybody can just harmonize naturally. 00:05:40.60\00:05:42.94 So I had a natural ability to do that, 00:05:42.97\00:05:47.14 and then there was a very old piano in my home, 00:05:47.18\00:05:49.51 and I would hear my sisters playing growing up, 00:05:49.54\00:05:53.88 and I sort of taught myself to navigate the keys... 00:05:53.92\00:05:56.95 Okay. 00:05:56.99\00:05:58.32 To chords, and so from my early teens 00:05:58.35\00:06:01.92 I started to be a church pianist, 00:06:01.96\00:06:05.49 and then I worked with choirs, accompanying choirs, 00:06:05.53\00:06:08.73 and started to do some formal music theory, 00:06:08.76\00:06:13.44 and play classical music all on my own, 00:06:13.54\00:06:17.51 and then in my late teens 00:06:17.54\00:06:19.07 I was introduced to a piano teacher. 00:06:19.11\00:06:21.11 My oldest sister really helped with music theory, 00:06:21.14\00:06:23.55 and my early development, 00:06:23.65\00:06:26.28 and I would steal their scores and play them. 00:06:26.31\00:06:29.35 You know, well, we had a few people competing 00:06:29.38\00:06:31.82 for the same piano in my home. 00:06:31.85\00:06:33.19 Okay. 00:06:33.22\00:06:34.56 And I got a chance when they were not around 00:06:34.59\00:06:35.92 to do that. 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.53 And then I did some exams 00:06:37.63\00:06:41.03 with the Royal Schools of Music. 00:06:41.06\00:06:42.40 Yes. 00:06:42.43\00:06:43.83 You know, and went on to college, 00:06:43.87\00:06:46.40 and there was definitely a few hints along the way, 00:06:46.43\00:06:51.37 for example being asked by Pastor Wintley Phipps 00:06:51.41\00:06:54.31 to accompany him when I was about 19, 20 00:06:54.34\00:06:59.05 during a concert down in Trinidad, 00:06:59.08\00:07:01.22 and then I moved on to Jamaica, 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.82 and I was leading a student group 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.32 at the time, 00:07:06.35\00:07:07.69 and I was asked if this group would appear on the JMI Awards 00:07:07.72\00:07:11.63 which is the Jamaica Music Industry Awards show. 00:07:11.66\00:07:13.93 Okay. 00:07:14.00\00:07:15.33 I didn't even know there was such an organization 00:07:15.36\00:07:19.63 at the time, 00:07:19.67\00:07:21.14 but our teacher, our college music teacher asked 00:07:21.17\00:07:24.01 if we would oblige and do that, 00:07:24.04\00:07:27.78 so these were hints along the way 00:07:27.81\00:07:29.48 that the Lord was sort of favoring me 00:07:29.51\00:07:33.42 towards this sort of ministry. 00:07:33.45\00:07:35.62 And so when I got to Andrews University, 00:07:35.65\00:07:37.85 I was with Andrews University singers, 00:07:37.89\00:07:40.76 and that helped me to grow a bit more, 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.86 you know, my appreciation for choral work, 00:07:42.89\00:07:45.46 and then after that surprisingly 00:07:45.49\00:07:50.73 even though 00:07:50.77\00:07:52.10 I achieved a master's degree in biology, 00:07:52.13\00:07:54.57 my heart was really with music, 00:07:54.60\00:07:56.17 and I decided to take an experimental year, 00:07:56.20\00:07:58.61 and that will take me further 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.11 into a journey of Missions and Music. 00:08:00.14\00:08:02.31 And where are some of the places you lived 00:08:02.34\00:08:04.08 because we talked about this getting, 00:08:04.18\00:08:05.95 becoming familiar with your background, 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.25 you lived in some places 00:08:08.28\00:08:09.62 where it doesn't really necessarily 00:08:09.65\00:08:11.22 if you think about, guy from St. Vincent 00:08:11.25\00:08:13.99 and with Indian background, 00:08:14.09\00:08:15.52 where were you living for some lengthy time period 00:08:15.56\00:08:18.43 that began as missions. 00:08:18.46\00:08:19.79 That's right. That's right. 00:08:19.83\00:08:21.13 Okay, so my education was in St. Vincent, 00:08:21.16\00:08:23.10 all church school, primary and secondary, 00:08:23.13\00:08:26.13 and then I went to school in Trinidad, 00:08:26.17\00:08:29.07 University of the Southern Caribbean, 00:08:29.10\00:08:30.51 it was called Caribbean... 00:08:30.54\00:08:31.87 Union College back in the day. Yes. 00:08:31.91\00:08:33.24 And then in Jamaica, at West Indies College, 00:08:33.27\00:08:35.34 that's now called Northern Caribbean University. 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.55 You were island hopping. 00:08:37.58\00:08:38.91 Yes, I was. 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.42 And then I went to Andrews University 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.49 to do a master's degree 00:08:44.52\00:08:45.85 and that was my introduction to winter 00:08:45.89\00:08:47.82 and Berrien Springs, Michigan have the kinds of winters 00:08:47.86\00:08:50.83 that really teach you what winters are all about. 00:08:50.86\00:08:52.73 If you repent... 00:08:52.76\00:08:54.36 That's right. 00:08:54.40\00:08:56.43 But after my studies in biology, 00:08:56.46\00:08:59.33 I was still not really totally fulfilled 00:08:59.37\00:09:03.94 and so I decided to do this search 00:09:03.97\00:09:07.61 to try to do overseas missions. 00:09:07.64\00:09:09.91 And I thought, you know, 00:09:09.94\00:09:11.71 let me try to see where the Lord would call me, 00:09:11.75\00:09:14.62 so I was praying about this, 00:09:14.65\00:09:17.22 and I applied, and I said to the office, 00:09:17.25\00:09:20.19 "I'd like to go to Thailand or East Africa." 00:09:20.29\00:09:23.96 Not that I knew a whole lot about those countries, 00:09:23.99\00:09:27.03 anyway a call came specifically for me 00:09:27.03\00:09:29.60 to go to South Korea. 00:09:29.63\00:09:31.17 Wow. 00:09:31.20\00:09:32.53 And I said, "Lord, if You work out all the visas 00:09:32.57\00:09:33.94 and everything I would go." 00:09:33.97\00:09:35.40 And then I further prayed to be in a clean place, 00:09:35.44\00:09:41.18 a clean environment, you know, I'm a bit OCD. 00:09:41.21\00:09:45.38 Okay. 00:09:45.41\00:09:47.02 And so the whole idea of overseas missions, 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.48 you know, I wasn't sure I was getting into. 00:09:49.52\00:09:51.19 You don't want to rough it too much. 00:09:51.22\00:09:52.55 Yeah. Rough it to a certain degree. 00:09:52.59\00:09:54.26 That's right. That's right. 00:09:54.29\00:09:55.69 And so I was led to South Korea, 00:09:55.72\00:09:59.83 and so I showed up there, 00:09:59.86\00:10:01.36 and they placed me in this city called Chungju. 00:10:01.40\00:10:04.70 And Chungju is known as the clean city. 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.30 Oh, wonderful. Lord heard your prayer. 00:10:07.34\00:10:08.80 Yeah, and they were praying for a pianist 00:10:08.84\00:10:12.14 to come to their mission school. 00:10:12.17\00:10:14.24 And so I felt the Lord had put me in the right place. 00:10:14.28\00:10:18.65 And that one year however turned into 14 years. 00:10:18.68\00:10:23.95 Fourteen years? Fourteen years. 00:10:24.05\00:10:26.02 So you do have some conversational Korean. 00:10:26.05\00:10:28.72 Yes, yes. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.29 You can order what you need at a Korean restaurant. 00:10:30.33\00:10:31.86 Oh, yeah. 00:10:31.89\00:10:33.23 And make your way through the market. 00:10:33.26\00:10:34.76 Yes, I could do my shopping, and I can do my banking, 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.87 and my postal stuff, you know, 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.77 all the survival things that you need to do 00:10:40.80\00:10:42.77 on a mission field in a foreign country. 00:10:42.80\00:10:45.94 You started to talk about something very deep 00:10:45.97\00:10:47.68 and I'll be lost, you know, but, you know, 00:10:47.71\00:10:50.98 I know enough Survival Korean to get by. 00:10:51.01\00:10:54.72 But you're very much a musician. 00:10:54.75\00:10:56.08 So what I want to do is kind of introduce one of your songs. 00:10:56.12\00:10:58.92 We have some beautiful music that you've done, 00:10:58.95\00:11:01.12 and I want to kind of lay the foundation 00:11:01.16\00:11:02.69 as I think about your story, the Lord knew your heart. 00:11:02.72\00:11:05.63 Yes. 00:11:05.66\00:11:07.00 And this song, "Shepherd of My Heart" 00:11:07.10\00:11:09.40 is a beautiful piano rendition. 00:11:09.43\00:11:12.10 Are you going to just be playing 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.50 or singing all along with it? 00:11:13.54\00:11:14.90 Oh, I'm just going to be playing. 00:11:14.94\00:11:16.27 Just going to be playing, sit back 00:11:16.30\00:11:17.74 as Kendol unfolds his story 00:11:17.77\00:11:20.04 he discovered in a beautiful way 00:11:20.08\00:11:21.54 that Jesus is the shepherd of his heart. 00:11:21.58\00:11:24.38 Thank you Kendol, appreciate that, relaxing. 00:16:49.00\00:16:52.44 Thank you. 00:16:52.47\00:16:53.84 You know, I mentioned to you 00:16:53.88\00:16:55.21 as we were listening to that song 00:16:55.24\00:16:56.81 and you may have come to the same conclusion, 00:16:56.91\00:16:59.21 it soothes the nerves, calms the spirit, 00:16:59.25\00:17:04.12 you know, if you're driving, 00:17:04.15\00:17:05.49 and we have various occasions too, 00:17:05.52\00:17:08.19 sometimes you're driving somewhere 00:17:08.22\00:17:09.69 and you want to just get in your car and relax, 00:17:09.72\00:17:12.09 and you think, "I don't want to hear the news. 00:17:12.13\00:17:14.56 I don't want to hear up-tempo music. 00:17:14.60\00:17:16.10 I don't want anybody singing to me, 00:17:16.13\00:17:17.47 I just want to listen to something relaxing 00:17:17.57\00:17:18.90 and spiritual." 00:17:18.93\00:17:20.27 And I appreciate that. 00:17:20.30\00:17:21.64 Thank you so much for that. Thank you, sir. 00:17:21.67\00:17:23.00 Now you've had opportunity to rub shoulders 00:17:23.04\00:17:25.51 with some pretty famous people, 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.84 give us a little dabble in that? 00:17:27.88\00:17:29.21 I know that that's not your focus of ministry, 00:17:29.24\00:17:31.45 but in your journey the Lord has led you 00:17:31.48\00:17:34.12 in some ways to touch the lives of people 00:17:34.15\00:17:36.69 that are very well known. 00:17:36.72\00:17:39.49 Yeah, that's right. 00:17:39.52\00:17:42.06 If people know who Bill Gates is... 00:17:42.09\00:17:44.56 Wow. Mr. Microsoft himself. 00:17:44.59\00:17:47.76 Yeah, I was commissioned by his family 00:17:47.76\00:17:51.47 to be their pianist over Christmas holiday. 00:17:51.50\00:17:54.24 They came on to the Caribbean 00:17:54.27\00:17:56.77 in a very sort of low profile way, 00:17:56.81\00:18:01.51 stayed there for a while. 00:18:01.54\00:18:04.91 So yeah, I was shuttled out there to be with them 00:18:04.95\00:18:08.55 and to provide Christmas music for them. 00:18:08.58\00:18:11.29 Wonderful. So that was cool. 00:18:11.32\00:18:13.29 And just to kind of add a cap to that, 00:18:13.39\00:18:16.52 that's not your main focus 00:18:16.56\00:18:17.89 'cause you're very ministry geared, 00:18:17.93\00:18:19.26 but that was part of your journey. 00:18:19.29\00:18:21.00 That's right, but the interesting thing 00:18:21.03\00:18:23.03 during that time is that we had a little service, 00:18:23.06\00:18:25.33 little Christmas service, and read a Christmas story, 00:18:25.37\00:18:29.07 you know, so... 00:18:29.10\00:18:31.24 Get a chance to share Christ, not just the seasonal music. 00:18:31.27\00:18:34.18 That's right. 00:18:34.28\00:18:36.08 Now you, there's a song, "O Divine Redeemer", 00:18:36.11\00:18:39.51 tell us about that 00:18:39.55\00:18:40.92 because in choosing songs to play and to feature, 00:18:40.95\00:18:45.32 how do you pick your songs? 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.06 Okay. 00:18:47.16\00:18:48.49 I like classical music, 00:18:48.52\00:18:49.86 and I discovered this song from an old cassette tape 00:18:49.89\00:18:54.56 that my sisters brought from Jamaica. 00:18:54.60\00:18:57.33 They went to school there, 00:18:57.37\00:18:58.93 and so their choir was singing this piece 00:18:58.97\00:19:00.87 and it's based on Psalm 51, 00:19:00.90\00:19:04.24 it's David at a low point in his life 00:19:04.27\00:19:05.91 when he's messed up, and he's feeling very guilty, 00:19:05.94\00:19:08.51 and disappointed in himself. 00:19:08.54\00:19:10.78 And so he cries out to God and, you know, 00:19:10.81\00:19:14.35 he's basically saying, "God, you know, 00:19:14.38\00:19:16.05 turn me not away, receive me, I'm unworthy." 00:19:16.08\00:19:20.09 So this piece, I heard it first 00:19:20.19\00:19:23.16 as a choral work, a choir. 00:19:23.19\00:19:27.23 But, you know, as a pianist I decided 00:19:27.30\00:19:30.17 I will turn it into a piano solo, 00:19:30.20\00:19:32.00 and I will try to express the same sentiments 00:19:32.03\00:19:34.84 through the piano of David, you know, repenting, 00:19:34.87\00:19:39.01 crying out to God, feeling desperate, 00:19:39.04\00:19:41.61 and the whole thing come in to some sort of end 00:19:41.64\00:19:45.88 with a resolution after he had expressed himself. 00:19:45.91\00:19:49.18 So this is "O Devine Redeemer". 00:19:49.22\00:19:51.35 Okay, sit back and enjoy, "O Divine Redeemer". 00:19:51.39\00:19:55.42 I know you were blessed by that song 00:24:26.39\00:24:28.66 that was speaking about David's heart, 00:24:28.70\00:24:31.03 and that was, as we talked about 00:24:31.07\00:24:33.30 this whole place of desperation and needing to be delivered 00:24:33.34\00:24:36.37 and reconciled with Christ, each one of us could identify 00:24:36.40\00:24:39.27 to some degree with that very sentiment. 00:24:39.31\00:24:41.68 That's right. 00:24:41.71\00:24:43.04 And I want to go back into some other areas 00:24:43.08\00:24:44.81 that we didn't talk about. 00:24:44.85\00:24:46.18 First of all, you're the youngest 00:24:46.21\00:24:47.58 in your family. 00:24:47.62\00:24:48.95 Yes. 00:24:48.98\00:24:50.35 And what was that like to be raised with four sisters? 00:24:50.39\00:24:52.22 Oh, man, a lot of pressure. 00:24:52.25\00:24:54.99 I came six years after them. Okay. 00:24:55.02\00:24:57.29 And so I didn't have a brother 00:24:57.33\00:25:00.93 and they didn't know what to do with me, 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.76 you know, but I had a piano. 00:25:02.80\00:25:05.07 You had a piano. Yeah. 00:25:05.10\00:25:06.43 Found a... 00:25:06.47\00:25:07.80 And a dog. 00:25:07.84\00:25:09.17 Piano and a dog, found a good friend. 00:25:09.20\00:25:10.61 Yeah. 00:25:10.64\00:25:11.97 Because that's a lot of pressure 00:25:12.01\00:25:13.34 being raised with four sisters, 00:25:13.38\00:25:14.71 you know, a lot of, not a whole lot of place to run 00:25:14.74\00:25:17.71 when you need somebody to play cricket with. 00:25:17.75\00:25:20.12 That's right. 00:25:20.22\00:25:21.55 I was going to say baseball, but you... 00:25:21.58\00:25:23.05 My dad tried, but, you know, we were a close family, 00:25:23.08\00:25:27.06 so it's a real blessing, and they're all musical, 00:25:27.09\00:25:30.53 and they really support what I do. 00:25:30.63\00:25:34.66 Okay. Yeah. 00:25:34.73\00:25:36.03 That's good, but you have a diversity of avenues 00:25:36.06\00:25:39.03 of ministry though, not just behind the piano, 00:25:39.07\00:25:41.57 talk about some of your seminars 00:25:41.60\00:25:43.10 because you are also a presenter. 00:25:43.14\00:25:44.84 Yes. 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.21 So I try to inspire young people to think 00:25:46.24\00:25:51.38 soberly about music, you know, 00:25:51.41\00:25:53.88 so I've done some studies on in music and worship, 00:25:53.98\00:25:59.35 in particular 00:25:59.39\00:26:00.79 how we use the musical language best, 00:26:00.89\00:26:03.22 you know, to express praise to God 00:26:03.26\00:26:05.76 because there is a school of thought that, you know, 00:26:05.79\00:26:09.63 there is a no moral value in music, 00:26:09.66\00:26:11.77 you know, it's all neutral. 00:26:11.80\00:26:15.90 That might have been fun, you know, 00:26:15.94\00:26:18.71 but we don't quite process music 00:26:18.74\00:26:21.64 the same from individual to individual, 00:26:21.68\00:26:24.45 and at the same time 00:26:24.48\00:26:25.81 the way the brain receives music, 00:26:25.85\00:26:28.32 we know some general trends 00:26:28.35\00:26:30.49 in terms of if we are able to really 00:26:30.59\00:26:34.86 think about the lyrical content, 00:26:34.89\00:26:37.03 and the message there or not, 00:26:37.13\00:26:39.26 because sometimes you see 00:26:39.29\00:26:41.96 the musical language we use can support the message, 00:26:42.00\00:26:45.23 and we want that to happen... 00:26:45.27\00:26:46.60 That's right. 00:26:46.70\00:26:48.04 we don't wanted to betray the message, 00:26:48.07\00:26:49.54 so I do some seminars in that, but my favorite seminar 00:26:49.57\00:26:53.44 right now came out really from where I am in my journey, 00:26:53.48\00:26:57.65 and it's really because I discovered 00:26:57.68\00:27:02.42 that in music if you sing or if you're a techie person, 00:27:02.45\00:27:07.19 you do PA systems and audio visual 00:27:07.22\00:27:10.36 that secular people are fascinated by that, 00:27:10.39\00:27:14.93 and the very first step in Christ method 00:27:14.93\00:27:17.17 is Christ mingled. 00:27:17.27\00:27:20.04 And so when I meet people, and we have a chat, 00:27:20.07\00:27:24.01 and they're trying to get to know me, 00:27:24.11\00:27:26.31 a lot of the time 00:27:26.34\00:27:27.68 they don't want to really talk about the biology 00:27:27.71\00:27:30.25 or they don't really want to talk about, 00:27:30.28\00:27:33.31 you know, other stuff, they want to talk 00:27:33.42\00:27:35.92 about the fact that I am pianist. 00:27:35.95\00:27:37.29 Okay. 00:27:37.39\00:27:38.72 So I used that 00:27:38.75\00:27:43.32 as a way to get a number or an email address 00:27:43.43\00:27:46.26 to form a connection of trust. 00:27:46.29\00:27:48.60 That's the first step in Christ method, you know, 00:27:48.63\00:27:50.97 ultimately we want to win people's confidence. 00:27:51.00\00:27:53.00 Right. 00:27:53.03\00:27:54.37 You know, and we don't want to do this hypocritically, 00:27:54.40\00:27:57.07 it's very important that the steps in Christ method 00:27:57.11\00:27:59.57 are done authentically, 00:27:59.61\00:28:02.01 and as if there is no other step 00:28:02.04\00:28:04.71 because, you know, 00:28:04.75\00:28:06.08 we like to rush on to the baptism, 00:28:06.11\00:28:07.85 step six, you know, 00:28:07.88\00:28:09.32 where we ask them to follow Jesus, 00:28:09.35\00:28:10.82 but that can take two weeks or it can take 15 years, 00:28:10.85\00:28:15.22 we don't know how long it's going to take. 00:28:15.26\00:28:16.76 Right, 'cause one plants, another waters, 00:28:16.86\00:28:18.46 but God gives the increase. 00:28:18.49\00:28:19.83 That's it. 00:28:19.86\00:28:21.16 He determines the time where, you know, 00:28:21.20\00:28:23.20 you blossom to the place where you are safe. 00:28:23.23\00:28:25.80 And that's expressed in the scriptures, 00:28:25.83\00:28:27.70 you know, Peter followed Jesus a year and a half 00:28:27.74\00:28:29.70 after his brother Andrew had introduced him. 00:28:29.74\00:28:31.94 So we can't rush that, but that's, 00:28:31.97\00:28:33.88 I like that avenue of ministry, continue. 00:28:33.98\00:28:35.94 That's right. 00:28:35.98\00:28:37.35 So, you know, 00:28:37.38\00:28:40.42 my seminars are about 00:28:40.52\00:28:41.85 how with the special skill of music, 00:28:41.88\00:28:46.39 being a technical person 00:28:46.42\00:28:47.76 how you contextualize that within Christ's method, 00:28:47.79\00:28:51.99 because that's the only method 00:28:52.03\00:28:53.70 that's going to give true success. 00:28:53.73\00:28:55.03 That's right. 00:28:55.06\00:28:56.40 Because we could get really bogged down with numbers, 00:28:56.43\00:28:59.43 you know, and we don't want 00:28:59.47\00:29:01.10 to bring people to Christ, 00:29:01.14\00:29:06.51 we don't want to bring people to music, 00:29:06.54\00:29:08.71 and they think they've come to Christ. 00:29:08.74\00:29:10.98 Very good connection, 00:29:11.01\00:29:12.35 we don't want the music to be a substitute 00:29:12.38\00:29:13.95 for Christ for the relationship. 00:29:14.05\00:29:15.38 Exactly, exactly. 00:29:15.42\00:29:16.75 And the heart of man is quite deceitful, you know. 00:29:16.82\00:29:19.62 Our emotional response to music is legitimate, it's important, 00:29:19.65\00:29:23.86 but it's not really the primary thing 00:29:23.89\00:29:25.63 that we're after. 00:29:25.66\00:29:27.13 We're after authentic worship to God through this, 00:29:27.23\00:29:31.43 He is the primary audience, 00:29:31.47\00:29:32.80 He's the one that's receiving the praise, and artists, 00:29:32.83\00:29:37.51 because we work on our craft, 00:29:37.54\00:29:39.07 and we get criticized by teachers and so on 00:29:39.11\00:29:42.74 to get better and better. 00:29:42.78\00:29:45.08 And let's face it, 00:29:45.11\00:29:46.55 there are very high standards of music in the world. 00:29:46.58\00:29:49.55 And now if my measure of success 00:29:49.58\00:29:51.62 is being able to sell a million copies of a record 00:29:51.65\00:29:56.19 or playing at certain venue, 00:29:56.22\00:29:58.69 I don't think that's the ultimate success for me 00:29:58.73\00:30:01.20 as an artist in the church, 00:30:01.23\00:30:02.96 it's not really what our mission is, you know. 00:30:03.00\00:30:05.30 That's right. 00:30:05.33\00:30:06.70 You know, it's how best I'm able to use this 00:30:06.74\00:30:09.24 within the Great Commission. 00:30:09.27\00:30:10.77 That's right. 00:30:10.81\00:30:12.14 The Great Commission is not a great suggestion, 00:30:12.17\00:30:16.11 it's a commission. 00:30:16.14\00:30:17.91 So every follower of Christ, 00:30:17.95\00:30:20.88 if you've experienced Jesus in your life, 00:30:20.92\00:30:23.65 you would have the hearts for missions 00:30:23.75\00:30:26.22 because that's what He does for us. 00:30:26.25\00:30:28.29 So my seminars are ones that encourage people 00:30:28.32\00:30:33.96 who are in music to use it for the Great Commission 00:30:34.00\00:30:39.23 because this not only helps people 00:30:39.27\00:30:41.74 to come to Christ, it helps us to put aside self 00:30:41.77\00:30:45.94 because artistry is really, you know, it's about self, 00:30:45.97\00:30:49.14 it's about believing in yourself, 00:30:49.18\00:30:50.78 and confidence, you got three yeses, 00:30:50.81\00:30:53.08 you know, that sort of language, 00:30:53.11\00:30:55.22 you know, and so that's how the world measure success. 00:30:55.25\00:31:00.36 But for us, it's really a chance 00:31:00.39\00:31:04.99 for the Lord to bring us into dependency on Him 00:31:05.03\00:31:09.86 'cause when we are involved in missions, 00:31:09.90\00:31:12.33 we are dependent on Christ. 00:31:12.37\00:31:13.70 That's right. 00:31:13.80\00:31:15.14 When we're just involved in music, 00:31:15.17\00:31:16.50 we're depended on self. 00:31:16.54\00:31:17.87 Yeah, because, you know, music, 00:31:17.91\00:31:19.24 I like what you said a moment ago, 00:31:19.27\00:31:20.94 the emotional response to music is important... 00:31:20.98\00:31:22.98 Yeah. 00:31:23.01\00:31:24.35 But that's not the goal... 00:31:24.38\00:31:25.71 That's right. 00:31:25.75\00:31:27.08 Because music can make you feel good, 00:31:27.18\00:31:28.52 it can make you feel sad, it can lift today, 00:31:28.55\00:31:29.88 it can make you feel melancholy, 00:31:29.92\00:31:32.02 it has all those influences on us. 00:31:32.05\00:31:35.32 But emotional aspect of music 00:31:35.36\00:31:37.83 while it reaches a certain place in your heart 00:31:37.86\00:31:40.66 and in your life, 00:31:40.76\00:31:42.06 that's not the ultimate goal of it. 00:31:42.10\00:31:43.43 That's right. 00:31:43.47\00:31:44.80 And then you, the other thing you pointed out, 00:31:44.83\00:31:46.17 musicians like affirmation... 00:31:46.20\00:31:47.67 They do. Did you like that? 00:31:47.70\00:31:49.04 Was that good? Yeah. 00:31:49.07\00:31:50.44 And that tends to seek the three yeses 00:31:50.47\00:31:52.94 rather than saying, 00:31:52.97\00:31:54.31 "I must decrease 00:31:54.34\00:31:55.68 because I want Him to increase." 00:31:55.71\00:31:57.08 That's right. That's right. 00:31:57.11\00:31:58.45 I'm not saying that everybody does that, 00:31:58.48\00:32:00.42 you know, don't feel anything, but let's face it, 00:32:00.45\00:32:02.72 human nature, we like the pats on the back. 00:32:02.75\00:32:04.49 Right. Right? 00:32:04.52\00:32:06.05 So I do these seminars not just to encourage people 00:32:06.09\00:32:10.23 to bring people to the church or bring people to Christ, 00:32:10.26\00:32:12.53 but you yourself, 00:32:12.56\00:32:13.90 you need this involvement in missions, 00:32:14.00\00:32:17.33 you know, if you're going to be good for yourself. 00:32:17.43\00:32:19.20 That's right, which takes me to that place, 00:32:19.23\00:32:22.14 music is deeper than it appears to be on the surface. 00:32:22.17\00:32:24.94 Absolutely. 00:32:24.97\00:32:26.31 And as a singer and songwriter, I tell you, 00:32:26.34\00:32:29.91 very modest songwriter 'cause I don't read music, 00:32:30.01\00:32:32.68 and I'm not theoretical, you have that background, 00:32:32.71\00:32:35.68 you have the ability to, you are self-taught, 00:32:35.72\00:32:38.59 but you have the theory, you have the experience, 00:32:38.62\00:32:40.22 you can read music, and do scores. 00:32:40.32\00:32:42.39 And not only that, I also found out 00:32:42.42\00:32:44.49 you have studio ability, engineering, sound, artistry, 00:32:44.53\00:32:48.40 all that in your repertoire. 00:32:48.43\00:32:51.87 So you're comfortable in a music studio? 00:32:51.90\00:32:53.97 Yeah, I like being in that environment actually. 00:32:54.00\00:32:57.57 Okay. Yeah. 00:32:57.61\00:32:59.07 Now the song that I was thinking of 00:32:59.11\00:33:00.98 and you set the stage wonderfully for that was 00:33:01.01\00:33:03.75 "Deep River". 00:33:03.78\00:33:05.51 Talk about Deep River 00:33:05.55\00:33:06.92 because as I'm listening to your approach to music 00:33:06.95\00:33:10.29 and once again, not a blanket statement, 00:33:10.32\00:33:11.85 but, you know, our world is very driven by music, 00:33:11.89\00:33:14.82 so many different genres of music, 00:33:14.86\00:33:16.46 so many different aspects, 00:33:16.49\00:33:17.86 even sometimes in Christian music, 00:33:17.89\00:33:19.79 it could be in a war driven, a recognition driven thing. 00:33:19.83\00:33:23.00 But for you, music is a lot deeper than that. 00:33:23.03\00:33:25.63 Yeah. 00:33:25.67\00:33:27.00 Deep River is a Negro spiritual. 00:33:27.10\00:33:29.40 I talked about my ancestor journey early on, 00:33:29.44\00:33:33.44 okay, 00:33:33.48\00:33:34.94 what I discovered is that 00:33:34.98\00:33:36.31 we have the highest incidence of displacement 00:33:36.34\00:33:39.15 on the planet ever recorded. 00:33:39.18\00:33:41.72 In fact, the statistic I read said that 1 in 131 persons 00:33:41.75\00:33:46.15 on planet earth are displaced. 00:33:46.19\00:33:50.39 That's quite shocking. 00:33:50.43\00:33:53.26 Human trafficking, 00:33:53.36\00:33:54.66 the slavery in all forms existing today still, 00:33:54.73\00:33:57.50 we don't label it as slavery all the time, 00:33:57.53\00:33:59.77 but essentially that's what it is. 00:33:59.80\00:34:01.24 That's right. 00:34:01.27\00:34:02.60 And so coming from an ancestry 00:34:02.64\00:34:05.87 of indentured servants, 00:34:05.91\00:34:08.88 I thought a Negro spiritual is as relevant 00:34:08.91\00:34:11.05 to my history as well. 00:34:11.08\00:34:12.95 I couldn't think of any other people group 00:34:12.98\00:34:16.08 that was displaced on the earth that birthed a genre of music. 00:34:16.12\00:34:21.29 And it's such beautiful music, the Negro spirituals. 00:34:21.32\00:34:23.26 I wanted to present them again, 00:34:23.29\00:34:26.70 not this time to be just a part of black identity 00:34:26.80\00:34:30.43 or black history necessarily, 00:34:30.53\00:34:32.90 but to bring hope to present day 00:34:32.93\00:34:35.20 displaced people, 00:34:35.24\00:34:38.21 and to bring them to Christ because you see that 00:34:38.24\00:34:41.88 the story of God is about 00:34:41.91\00:34:43.31 how He brings beautiful things out of bad situations. 00:34:43.35\00:34:47.08 And so, Ellen White talks about in the last days 00:34:47.12\00:34:50.25 that people will come to adore us, 00:34:50.29\00:34:52.89 we wouldn't even need to go to their country sometimes... 00:34:52.92\00:34:55.32 That's right. To give them the gospel. 00:34:55.36\00:34:57.76 And so here in the United States, 00:34:57.79\00:34:59.49 you've got refugees from all over, 00:34:59.53\00:35:01.43 now I'm writing this album, 00:35:01.46\00:35:03.67 and getting it ready to record it. 00:35:03.70\00:35:05.77 And there's somebody in this country 00:35:05.80\00:35:09.24 who is getting ready to do 00:35:09.27\00:35:10.61 a concert for refugee ministries, 00:35:10.71\00:35:14.58 and this person heard me play something else 00:35:14.61\00:35:18.78 and asked if I will come to this country 00:35:18.81\00:35:22.25 to perform in this concert. 00:35:22.28\00:35:23.69 So, you know, again it's a story of God. 00:35:23.72\00:35:25.15 So Sojourn is the CD that I have 00:35:25.19\00:35:30.73 and Deep River is 00:35:30.83\00:35:32.83 one of the several Negro spirituals on this album. 00:35:32.86\00:35:36.10 Well, thank you for that. 00:35:36.13\00:35:37.53 I'd like you to sit back 00:35:37.57\00:35:38.90 and listen to the pathos of the rise 00:35:38.93\00:35:41.84 and the journey of those who understand of the sadness, 00:35:41.87\00:35:47.04 but also the eventual joy of knowing 00:35:47.14\00:35:49.71 you've been displaced, 00:35:49.74\00:35:51.78 but Christ has found you where you were. 00:35:51.81\00:35:54.08 That's right. Negro spiritual, Deep River. 00:35:54.18\00:35:56.45 You've discovered through songs like that 00:38:58.13\00:39:00.17 that the relationships that matter 00:39:00.20\00:39:02.37 that really take us to that safe place in Christ, 00:39:02.40\00:39:05.84 you know, our relationships that often 00:39:05.87\00:39:07.51 borne out of hardship and difficulty, 00:39:07.54\00:39:10.78 that's what I like about that song, 00:39:10.81\00:39:12.15 Deep River. 00:39:12.18\00:39:13.55 Yeah. 00:39:13.58\00:39:14.92 It's, you know, they say still waters run deep, 00:39:14.95\00:39:17.02 but very few of us, 00:39:17.05\00:39:19.12 very few of us appreciate what we've become 00:39:19.15\00:39:21.99 as a result of going through the deep rivers in our lives. 00:39:22.02\00:39:25.16 And on that CD, mention the title of the CD 00:39:25.19\00:39:27.23 again that has Negro spirituals. 00:39:27.30\00:39:28.70 Right, it's called Sojourn. Sojourn. 00:39:28.73\00:39:30.67 And it's based on two Bible texts 00:39:30.77\00:39:32.10 that talk about the fact that we are sojourners on the earth. 00:39:32.13\00:39:34.04 Okay. 00:39:34.07\00:39:35.40 This isn't really our final home 00:39:35.44\00:39:38.24 and, in fact, I'm writing right now 00:39:38.27\00:39:41.48 a second CD of Negro spirituals if you will 00:39:41.51\00:39:47.12 because there are scores of Negro spirituals out there, 00:39:47.15\00:39:51.79 and I really like this music, so why not? 00:39:51.82\00:39:56.62 I like that picture. 00:39:56.73\00:39:58.59 I have always desired, 00:39:58.63\00:40:00.70 I mean I tinker around the keyboard enough 00:40:00.73\00:40:03.06 to find a song or develop one, 00:40:03.10\00:40:06.70 but the deep appreciation 00:40:06.74\00:40:08.50 of what music really is all about 00:40:08.54\00:40:10.77 is something that I'm still in pursuit of, so but, 00:40:10.81\00:40:13.64 until then I'll appreciate musicians 00:40:13.74\00:40:15.68 and ministers such as yourself. 00:40:15.71\00:40:18.08 Tell us about some of the places you've been 00:40:18.11\00:40:21.02 'cause music has taken you far and wide, and you're single... 00:40:21.05\00:40:24.62 That's right. 00:40:24.65\00:40:25.99 I just want to say that for those 00:40:26.02\00:40:27.62 who are watching the program, 00:40:27.66\00:40:31.39 but that hasn't been a major pursuit of yours, 00:40:31.43\00:40:34.46 but tell us about some of the places you've gone, 00:40:34.50\00:40:36.70 and how the Lord has allowed you 00:40:36.73\00:40:38.07 to meet some of our other 3ABN family, 00:40:38.10\00:40:39.70 like Sandra Entermann. 00:40:39.73\00:40:41.20 Oh, yeah, yeah. 00:40:41.24\00:40:43.44 Well, you know, I had these friends in Korea, 00:40:43.47\00:40:46.61 this family in Korea 00:40:46.64\00:40:48.34 that decided to move to Australia. 00:40:48.38\00:40:52.25 So they moved and close friend of mine 00:40:52.28\00:40:56.02 asked me if I would come down on holiday 00:40:56.05\00:40:57.69 during my break. 00:40:57.72\00:40:59.05 So here was I flying 00:40:59.09\00:41:02.59 from Korea to Australia 00:41:02.62\00:41:04.83 to see my Korean buddy and his family. 00:41:04.86\00:41:06.90 And the very first Sabbath I said, you know, 00:41:07.00\00:41:10.43 "I go to Korean churches every week. 00:41:10.47\00:41:12.13 It would be nice to go 00:41:12.17\00:41:13.50 to an English speaking church today." 00:41:13.60\00:41:16.04 So he took me to the nearest 00:41:16.07\00:41:18.34 English speaking church to his house, 00:41:18.37\00:41:21.28 and so at this church 00:41:21.31\00:41:24.51 I met people who greeted me warmly, 00:41:24.55\00:41:28.05 and I was invited to lunch 00:41:28.08\00:41:30.55 along with other visitors for the day. 00:41:30.59\00:41:33.12 And so at this lunch 00:41:33.15\00:41:35.86 I would meet Sandra Entermann... 00:41:35.89\00:41:38.36 Yes. 00:41:38.39\00:41:39.73 And we did some singing and so on after lunch, 00:41:39.76\00:41:43.80 but they didn't know that I played. 00:41:43.83\00:41:47.47 Oh... 00:41:47.50\00:41:49.17 But I was staying coincidentally 00:41:49.20\00:41:52.14 to those up from that house on the same street, 00:41:52.17\00:41:57.48 and this was Sandra's sister 00:41:57.51\00:42:00.72 and good friends of mine. 00:42:00.75\00:42:03.79 Anyway the following day, 00:42:03.82\00:42:05.92 I guess they noticed that I was sort of musical 00:42:05.95\00:42:07.99 'cause I was singing 00:42:08.02\00:42:09.36 and I was harmonizing a little bit, 00:42:09.39\00:42:11.86 and so they asked me, "Do you play? 00:42:11.89\00:42:15.36 And I said, "Yeah, I play the piano." 00:42:15.40\00:42:18.50 He said, "Well, we had a piano downstairs. 00:42:18.53\00:42:20.40 You never told us yesterday. 00:42:20.44\00:42:21.77 So long story short, 00:42:21.80\00:42:25.17 Sandra and I made a musical connection, 00:42:25.21\00:42:29.84 and that would lead me 00:42:29.88\00:42:31.21 to Three Angels Broadcasting Network. 00:42:31.25\00:42:32.91 That's right. 00:42:32.95\00:42:34.28 Where we did some videos right here together 00:42:34.32\00:42:36.55 and I met a really good friend through Sandra, 00:42:36.65\00:42:39.75 and that's A.T Westney. 00:42:39.79\00:42:41.32 Oh, very much part of the 3ABN. 00:42:41.36\00:42:43.19 He was responsible for my first CD project 00:42:43.22\00:42:45.93 back in 1999. 00:42:45.96\00:42:47.56 Yeah, yeah.
