I want to spend my life 00:00:01.96\00:00:07.74 mending broken people 00:00:08.24\00:00:12.87 I want to spend my life 00:00:13.24\00:00:18.78 removing pain 00:00:19.68\00:00:23.89 Lord, let my words 00:00:24.52\00:00:29.39 heal a heart that hurts 00:00:30.73\00:00:34.73 I want to spend my life 00:00:35.26\00:00:40.17 mending broken people 00:00:40.94\00:00:45.44 I want to spend my life 00:00:46.31\00:00:51.31 mending broken people 00:00:51.98\00:00:57.35 Hello and welcome to 3ABN Today. My name is 00:01:11.70\00:01:13.87 CA Murray and allow me once again to thank you 00:01:13.97\00:01:16.14 for sharing just a little of your, no doubt, busy 00:01:16.27\00:01:19.57 day with us, to thank you as always for your 00:01:19.67\00:01:22.14 love, your prayers, and your support of 3ABN 00:01:22.24\00:01:25.85 as together, we lift up the name of Jesus 00:01:25.95\00:01:28.32 and take the good news of Christ's soon coming 00:01:28.42\00:01:31.25 to the whole world. This is a very special 00:01:31.35\00:01:32.85 program. 1) Because of our subject matter, and 00:01:32.95\00:01:36.32 2) because of the guests that are with 00:01:36.42\00:01:38.46 me on set. I'm in the company of our director 00:01:38.49\00:01:40.93 of trust services, Mr. Roy Hunt. Good to have 00:01:41.03\00:01:43.70 you here, man. - Good to be here. Always 00:01:43.77\00:01:45.40 a pleasure. - Praise the Lord. Good-looking, 00:01:45.47\00:01:47.34 distinguished fellow. This is a fellow you 00:01:47.40\00:01:49.64 want to give your money to because he looks 00:01:49.70\00:01:51.97 so good. - Not to me- to 3ABN. [laughter] 00:01:52.04\00:01:56.04 - And we praise the Lord for that. But what's 00:01:56.14\00:01:59.61 really interesting today is our guests. 00:01:59.75\00:02:03.49 -Are our guests? Is our guests? Are our guests. 00:02:03.52\00:02:05.69 ...Our guests. Attorney Wesley Westphal. That 00:02:07.06\00:02:12.53 name, Westphal, is very familiar to those 00:02:12.69\00:02:14.83 of you who are friends of 3ABN. Been here 00:02:14.90\00:02:18.03 more than one time and his dad was our- was 00:02:18.10\00:02:23.24 YOUR predecessor for many years. - That's right. 00:02:23.30\00:02:25.87 - Hard workin' guy. - Absolutely. [laughter] 00:02:25.97\00:02:28.94 - And his mom is still with us; just left here 00:02:30.08\00:02:31.65 just a few days ago. But our special 00:02:31.71\00:02:35.05 guests- I use that term a lot, but they are 00:02:35.12\00:02:38.02 special guests in this capacity- are JD and 00:02:38.12\00:02:40.86 Shelley Quinn, and you're seeing them in a slightly 00:02:40.92\00:02:43.56 different role because we're going to talk about 00:02:43.63\00:02:45.66 stewardship and benevolence and 00:02:45.73\00:02:47.50 disinterest in benevolence and support of the work of God; 00:02:47.60\00:02:50.77 and along with working for 3ABN, they are 00:02:50.83\00:02:54.00 supporters of 3ABN and are going to talk 00:02:54.07\00:02:58.17 to you a little bit about how they have 00:02:58.27\00:03:00.41 struck to their lives and their work so that 00:03:00.51\00:03:02.61 their legacy to 3ABN is ongoing. Have I covered 00:03:02.71\00:03:05.68 that fairly succinctly? - Amen. - So, we're going 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.75 to have a good program. Talk a little bit about 00:03:07.82\00:03:09.15 stewardship, about surrendering your 00:03:09.18\00:03:10.52 life to the Lord, and what that means; 00:03:10.55\00:03:12.32 we've got the attorney here should we run 00:03:12.42\00:03:14.19 into any difficulty. - He keeps me straight. 00:03:14.26\00:03:18.33 - Amen and amen. So we really should be 00:03:18.39\00:03:20.70 quite fine. Roy's going to kind of take the 00:03:20.76\00:03:23.67 lead on this stuff because he is our- 00:03:23.77\00:03:25.57 this fellow does a good job. When we have 00:03:25.70\00:03:29.07 3ABN board meeting, the reports are-I 00:03:29.14\00:03:31.41 don't say universally good, but they're always 00:03:31.51\00:03:34.08 pretty good, man. You're working really 00:03:34.18\00:03:35.74 hard, and your team is working hard. We 00:03:35.81\00:03:37.78 should give them kudos also. - Yes. Every 00:03:37.88\00:03:40.45 person in our office has a major part in 00:03:40.52\00:03:43.08 what we do, and talking with the individuals that 00:03:43.18\00:03:46.86 call and want to do something for 3ABN, 00:03:46.92\00:03:49.62 they're the front line. Many times, people 00:03:49.69\00:03:53.90 will talk to them before they talk to 00:03:54.00\00:03:55.60 me, so I appreciate every one of them 00:03:55.66\00:03:58.47 that we have. We have one volunteer, even, 00:03:58.53\00:04:01.00 that spends a lot of time with us. She's 00:04:01.10\00:04:04.21 away right now, but when she comes back, 00:04:04.31\00:04:06.68 she's right there, ready to go to work, 00:04:06.74\00:04:09.04 so we appreciate all of them. - Good team. 00:04:09.08\00:04:12.01 A good group of people. Shelley and JD are 00:04:12.05\00:04:15.68 Texans. We got here about the same time, although 00:04:15.75\00:04:18.55 you had done some work previously to your 00:04:18.65\00:04:20.49 coming for 3ABN... We're going to get into 00:04:20.56\00:04:23.09 this; sort of just touching the surface. 00:04:23.19\00:04:25.29 You have looked at your life, at what you have, 00:04:25.36\00:04:28.06 what the Lord's blessed you with, and made some 00:04:28.13\00:04:29.76 long-term determinations for yourself and for 00:04:29.83\00:04:32.40 the ministry. - Absolutely. When I think of 00:04:32.47\00:04:35.24 stewardship, the scripture that comes 00:04:35.30\00:04:37.94 to my mind is James 1:17 that God is the 00:04:38.04\00:04:40.48 giver of every good and perfect gift. Of 00:04:40.54\00:04:44.18 course, Paul said that even- the way I look 00:04:44.31\00:04:49.02 at it, everything that we have is God's. 00:04:49.08\00:04:51.95 Paul said in 1 Corinthians 6:19 that our bodies 00:04:52.09\00:04:55.46 are not our own but we were bought with 00:04:55.56\00:04:57.46 a price. To me, stewardship is 00:04:57.69\00:05:00.80 recognizing God as our provider, then 00:05:00.86\00:05:03.50 it is our responsibility to manage the resources 00:05:03.60\00:05:09.37 that He has given us for His glory. 00:05:09.47\00:05:12.01 We want to ensure the most important 00:05:12.11\00:05:16.34 ministry to us- we give a faithful tithe 00:05:16.41\00:05:20.65 to the church, we give offerings to our local 00:05:20.75\00:05:24.09 church- but the most important ministry to 00:05:24.19\00:05:27.09 us is 3ABN because we believe wholeheartedly- 00:05:27.16\00:05:30.73 and the reason we're here is because we 00:05:30.79\00:05:32.89 believe that 3ABN is the greatest evangelistic 00:05:32.93\00:05:36.00 tool in the hands of the Lord today. We 00:05:36.06\00:05:38.43 want to ensure that what we have will 00:05:38.47\00:05:43.57 continue to support 3ABN after we're gone. 00:05:43.67\00:05:46.57 - Amen. Amen. When we think of stewardship in 00:05:46.64\00:05:48.88 its broadest terms, it is really the recognition 00:05:48.94\00:05:51.61 that God is in control of every aspect of 00:05:51.68\00:05:54.35 our lives. Certainly, our hearts, our heads - 00:05:54.38\00:05:57.92 that translates into what goes on in your 00:05:58.02\00:06:00.72 wallet. But to limit it just to funds is 00:06:00.79\00:06:04.56 sort of an impoverished view of stewardship 00:06:04.66\00:06:07.53 because it's the health He's given you, it's the 00:06:07.60\00:06:09.96 life force He's given you, it's the time He's 00:06:10.03\00:06:12.10 given you - it's all of those things 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.20 turned over to God given back to God for 00:06:14.27\00:06:16.50 service in the cause of God. I certainly would not gainsay. 00:06:16.67\00:06:20.68 I think 3ABN is an incredible latter-day 00:06:20.71\00:06:23.65 tool in the hand of God for the salvation 00:06:23.71\00:06:25.98 of the souls of men and- I've not been able- 00:06:26.05\00:06:29.95 Irma and I-to do anything large, but 00:06:31.12\00:06:33.22 we have money taken out of every paycheck 00:06:33.32\00:06:34.96 since we've come to 3ABN that goes back 00:06:35.02\00:06:36.89 into the ministry, because I believe 00:06:36.96\00:06:39.16 you ought to buy what you sell. You ought to 00:06:39.23\00:06:41.03 believe in what you sell. And as such, 00:06:41.06\00:06:44.03 it's worthy of our support. When you see 00:06:44.10\00:06:46.67 the good that's being done around the world, you 00:06:46.74\00:06:48.67 want that to go on and go on and go on 00:06:48.77\00:06:50.51 after you. Let's go to our music, Roy, then 00:06:50.57\00:06:53.91 I'll kind of put it in your hands a little 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.31 bit. We're going to talk a little bit more 00:06:55.34\00:06:56.68 about stewardship and then we're going 00:06:56.71\00:06:58.05 to make ample use of this attorney who sits 00:06:58.08\00:07:00.08 before us-good-lookin' guy, you know. He's 00:07:00.15\00:07:02.45 got hair. [laughter] - Praise the Lord. 00:07:02.55\00:07:10.19 Anybody with hair. It's kind of good for 00:07:10.26\00:07:15.63 me. And forgive us; we have fun here 00:07:15.70\00:07:18.03 because we believe in what we're doing. 00:07:18.10\00:07:19.43 We believe in the power of the Lord and there is 00:07:19.47\00:07:21.84 a joy and a line that comes from 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.54 serving the Lord and knowing that you're 00:07:23.61\00:07:25.31 doing what God is asking you to do. 00:07:25.41\00:07:26.74 - Amen. - So if it overflows and expresses 00:07:26.78\00:07:29.68 itself in laughter and joy, forgive us. In fact, 00:07:29.74\00:07:32.51 don't forgive us-join us, because I think 00:07:32.58\00:07:34.72 that's what the Lord would have us to do. 00:07:34.78\00:07:36.12 Our music is coming from Sam Ocampo, and I need 00:07:36.15\00:07:38.59 to warn you and get you ready for Sam. Sam is 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.52 to the piano what Jaime Jorge is to the violin 00:07:41.62\00:07:45.13 visually. A lot of facial expression; 00:07:45.23\00:07:47.70 he's very into his music, so when you watch him, 00:07:47.80\00:07:50.63 half the fun is just watching what he's 00:07:50.70\00:07:52.47 doing facially as is when Jaime Jorge is 00:07:52.63\00:07:55.10 playing. He's just twisting and turning and 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.91 he's into his music. Well, Sam is like that 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.81 on the piano. He's going to be playing "Thank You 00:07:58.91\00:08:03.65 Lord." Listen, but also watch. It'll 00:08:03.68\00:08:07.12 be a spiritual treat. This is Sam Ocampo. 00:08:07.18\00:08:09.55 - Welcome back. That was beautiful. I've 00:12:26.57\00:12:29.61 always enjoyed Sam Ocampo. I've known 00:12:29.71\00:12:33.01 him for- not known him personally but known 00:12:33.11\00:12:34.88 his music style, and the songs that he 00:12:34.95\00:12:37.45 plays are just absolutely beautiful. Thank the Lord. 00:12:37.52\00:12:41.26 - He does get into his music; he really 00:12:41.32\00:12:43.99 does. - Wesley Westphal, I appreciate everything 00:12:44.06\00:12:48.90 you do for 3ABN. Every document that is 00:12:48.96\00:12:52.73 written-almost. There's probably a couple that 00:12:52.80\00:12:57.11 Wesley is not involved with. Wesley's been 00:12:57.21\00:13:00.71 working with 3ABN for many, many years. 00:13:00.81\00:13:03.35 Whenever there is a question, I call 00:13:03.41\00:13:06.05 Wesley. If he doesn't know the answer, he 00:13:06.15\00:13:10.62 knows right where to go to get it. I've 00:13:10.69\00:13:12.85 asked Wesley to talk a little bit about wills 00:13:12.99\00:13:16.66 and trust. A lot of times, I talk about 00:13:16.73\00:13:21.03 the trust and the wills, but I'd like to hear it 00:13:21.10\00:13:24.17 from an attorney. Why is it necessary for 00:13:24.20\00:13:27.34 people to do a will or a trust and what's the 00:13:27.44\00:13:30.21 difference? - Well, wills and trusts accomplish 00:13:30.24\00:13:34.68 the same things, somewhat. They distribute your 00:13:34.74\00:13:37.05 assets once one person passes away. The main 00:13:37.11\00:13:42.05 difference between a will and a trust is 00:13:42.12\00:13:44.65 that a trust will help you avoid probate. 00:13:44.75\00:13:47.42 That's, if you have property- anybody 00:13:47.49\00:13:50.99 who owns property really should have a 00:13:51.06\00:13:52.66 trust, because avoiding the probate system 00:13:52.73\00:13:56.77 will save time and money from your estate 00:13:56.87\00:14:01.04 and make it so much easier for your 00:14:01.10\00:14:02.44 beneficiaries and whoever's handling your 00:14:02.50\00:14:04.41 estate. - Now, Wesley, if I may hit the pause 00:14:04.47\00:14:06.94 button, define 'probate,' 'cause there may be some 00:14:07.04\00:14:08.44 people who don't know that term. - Probate 00:14:08.54\00:14:10.71 is a Core Proceeding that, when a person 00:14:10.78\00:14:12.78 passes away with a will, the will typically 00:14:12.88\00:14:19.29 gets deposited into a court or the county 00:14:19.35\00:14:22.12 court. Then you have a Core Proceeding 00:14:22.19\00:14:26.13 that divides all the assets up, but that takes a 00:14:26.23\00:14:30.67 long time. There's expenses involved- 00:14:30.73\00:14:33.03 attorneys' fees-it's a much more complicated 00:14:33.07\00:14:36.71 process than what you have with a trust. 00:14:36.81\00:14:39.37 - Do attorneys need to get involved in 00:14:39.44\00:14:40.91 probate, or should they? - Yeah, you should. 00:14:40.98\00:14:43.65 If you have a-. [laughter] Some 00:14:43.71\00:14:48.65 attorneys are going to get mad at me for 00:14:48.75\00:14:50.12 saying, "Get trusts," 'cause that takes 00:14:50.19\00:14:51.92 a lot of money out of their pocket. 00:14:51.99\00:14:53.72 Typically, if you have to probate a 00:14:55.79\00:14:57.53 will, you're going to have an attorney 00:14:57.63\00:14:58.96 involved, so you'll have a lot of attorneys' 00:14:59.03\00:15:00.36 fees, a lot of costs, a lot of fees outside 00:15:00.40\00:15:04.43 the attorneys' fees, and it takes it quite a 00:15:04.50\00:15:06.33 while. I've seen some probates last for 00:15:06.43\00:15:09.27 years. Trusts are quick; much less expense 00:15:09.34\00:15:15.61 involved and you avoid the hassles 00:15:15.68\00:15:19.11 of the probate system. - Now, in some states, 00:15:19.18\00:15:21.92 I understand that there are small probates. 00:15:21.95\00:15:24.65 Are you familiar with small probates? 00:15:24.72\00:15:27.56 - Yes. Most states have what's like a small 00:15:27.66\00:15:31.43 estate set aside where you can do declarations 00:15:31.49\00:15:35.83 or affidavits, and you can do that outside 00:15:35.96\00:15:40.37 the court system if your estate is small 00:15:40.44\00:15:43.20 enough. - Do you know how small a small estate 00:15:43.27\00:15:47.48 can be? We're talking 10,000, 50,000? 00:15:47.54\00:15:50.85 'Cause we get asked all the time how much 00:15:50.95\00:15:55.18 money is our dividing line between a will 00:15:55.25\00:15:58.72 and a trust as to how much money I have 00:15:58.82\00:16:00.96 versus a will or a trust. - Well, the key 00:16:01.02\00:16:04.06 thing is if there's property in the estate. 00:16:04.13\00:16:06.90 If there's property, almost always, you need 00:16:06.96\00:16:10.93 a trust to avoid probate. If there's no 00:16:10.97\00:16:14.14 property, then there's some states where it's 00:16:14.24\00:16:17.71 100,000 or less; each state has its own dividing 00:16:17.77\00:16:23.11 line as to how much your estate is worth 00:16:23.21\00:16:25.65 whether you need to have the court involved 00:16:25.71\00:16:28.52 or not. - Okay, take us through doing a 00:16:28.58\00:16:32.85 trust from the time that you receive the 00:16:32.89\00:16:35.62 document. What happens? People are waiting 00:16:35.72\00:16:38.96 on their document to come back. What are 00:16:38.99\00:16:41.83 you doing to prepare their document? - Well, 00:16:41.90\00:16:44.63 I review all the documents or review 00:16:44.70\00:16:46.03 what their wishes are... If there's a problem, 00:16:46.07\00:16:48.10 they talk to them and see what I can do to 00:16:48.17\00:16:51.01 resolve any issues that there may be. I create 00:16:51.11\00:16:55.01 the documents, send them back to 3ABN 00:16:55.14\00:16:57.15 typically, and then they send them onto the 00:16:57.18\00:16:59.61 donors or the trustors, then the 00:16:59.75\00:17:06.39 signatures are done, and basically... 00:17:06.49\00:17:08.89 - That's it? - Yeah, that's it. - I have 00:17:08.99\00:17:11.23 a question, though. There are revocable 00:17:11.29\00:17:15.33 trusts and irrevocable trusts. What do we- 00:17:15.40\00:17:19.07 - We promote revocable trust here. - So you 00:17:19.17\00:17:22.90 gain control? - Well, we do self-administered trust 00:17:22.97\00:17:27.31 here, which means the individual that wants 00:17:27.41\00:17:30.15 to do a trust or the husband and spouse 00:17:30.21\00:17:32.31 doing a trust were doing self-administered, 00:17:32.41\00:17:35.18 that means they are in control. If they want 00:17:35.25\00:17:39.55 to do something, they have the authority 00:17:39.65\00:17:42.16 to go ahead. They are actually the trustee. 00:17:42.19\00:17:44.06 In some states- the reason we chose to 00:17:44.16\00:17:48.00 go this route, there are some states in 00:17:48.06\00:17:50.57 the country where people will lose their 00:17:50.63\00:17:53.87 homestead exemption if they do a regular 00:17:53.97\00:17:57.91 revocable trust. A self-administered trust 00:17:57.97\00:18:02.48 takes them out of that problem and homestead 00:18:02.54\00:18:08.12 exemption is not lost because they are 00:18:08.18\00:18:12.12 still the trustee. - Which is important, 00:18:12.22\00:18:16.02 especially today with taxes going up right 00:18:16.09\00:18:18.03 and left. If you are a senior citizen, you 00:18:18.13\00:18:21.56 can come under that category of them 00:18:21.63\00:18:23.57 fixing it. - That's right. - And so, that 00:18:23.67\00:18:26.33 does make a difference. Otherwise, I mean, those 00:18:26.40\00:18:29.24 taxes could continue to go up and you have 00:18:29.30\00:18:31.17 no control on it anyway. - Now, 00:18:31.21\00:18:33.27 I want to take just a second, because 00:18:33.31\00:18:34.64 from the outside looking in, we're 00:18:34.68\00:18:36.78 going to focus on what you've done. 00:18:36.85\00:18:38.21 One of the things that you said, attorney, is 00:18:38.25\00:18:41.08 if you have property- at that point, think trusts. 00:18:41.18\00:18:45.42 I'm trying to draw a line here so that those- 00:18:45.49\00:18:47.56 if you don't have a lot of cash but you 00:18:47.66\00:18:50.43 do have property, house, land, then think trusts 00:18:50.49\00:18:53.09 because that simplifies it and makes it a little 00:18:53.16\00:18:54.86 easier for you to work with. So if you have 00:18:54.93\00:18:57.27 property, that's the bottom line. Think 00:18:57.33\00:18:59.17 trusts at that point as opposed to will. 00:18:59.20\00:19:00.87 Do I understand you correctly? - That's 00:19:00.90\00:19:02.97 pretty much correct. - Okay. - If you have 00:19:03.04\00:19:06.27 property-... Actually, a lot of the estate value- 00:19:06.37\00:19:10.65 the dividing line goes down. If you have 00:19:10.75\00:19:13.72 property that's worth almost anything, then 00:19:13.78\00:19:16.25 in some states, you're going to have to do 00:19:16.32\00:19:17.95 a probate if you only have a will for it. 00:19:18.05\00:19:20.19 That's why you need to think trust if you have 00:19:20.26\00:19:23.63 property. - Save time, money, hassle, and you 00:19:23.73\00:19:27.33 get your wishes done. - Now, we have questions 00:19:27.40\00:19:31.93 back on the will side. People will call and 00:19:32.00\00:19:35.27 say, "Can't we do a will on our own? Can't 00:19:35.30\00:19:39.34 we go online and find a document to do a 00:19:39.47\00:19:41.84 will?" What are your thoughts on that? 00:19:41.88\00:19:45.75 - You could do that, but it's very generic and 00:19:45.81\00:19:50.09 it's- I don't recommend that because it doesn't 00:19:50.19\00:19:54.62 personalize your particular situation. 00:19:54.72\00:19:59.46 Particularly, there are some blanks you can 00:19:59.49\00:20:02.13 find and say, "I want this to this person or 00:20:02.20\00:20:04.83 this to that person," online and just print it 00:20:04.90\00:20:07.24 out and do that, but it can be awkward for 00:20:07.34\00:20:10.81 whoever's running your- doing your distribution, 00:20:10.91\00:20:15.08 the executor, and you really need something 00:20:15.14\00:20:19.51 that's personalized to you. If you have any 00:20:19.61\00:20:22.55 questions on it, it's personalized to your 00:20:22.62\00:20:24.29 situation to make it the smoothest transition 00:20:24.39\00:20:26.32 that you want. - And one of the advantages 00:20:26.35\00:20:29.56 of doing a trust is that 3ABN's usually 00:20:29.69\00:20:33.43 the successor trustee. Once the person has 00:20:33.50\00:20:37.87 passed away, both individuals-if it's a 00:20:37.93\00:20:40.47 joint trust- once they both pass 00:20:40.54\00:20:43.30 away, that allows 3ABN to come in immediately 00:20:43.37\00:20:48.28 and start processing- start administering- 00:20:48.34\00:20:51.38 the trust. We don't have to worry about going 00:20:51.45\00:20:54.25 to court and getting the judges' OK to 00:20:54.32\00:20:57.52 do what we need to do. The trust can be 00:20:57.65\00:21:01.12 administered from day one. It usually takes a 00:21:01.19\00:21:05.19 period of time to do it, but we can get 00:21:05.26\00:21:07.66 started right away. - Exactly. That's the 00:21:07.73\00:21:09.83 benefits of a trust; you get started right 00:21:09.90\00:21:11.43 away. If you go to probate, I think the 00:21:11.50\00:21:14.10 minimum I've seen is 6 months. - You know, 00:21:14.20\00:21:18.01 I'm just thinking when you said people say, 00:21:18.14\00:21:20.98 "Can't we do a will ourselves?" You can 00:21:21.04\00:21:24.15 pull your own teeth, too, if you want. 00:21:24.21\00:21:26.61 It's something that- first of all-and I'm 00:21:26.72\00:21:31.72 sure, Wes, you can agree with this- 00:21:31.82\00:21:34.12 is that when we're talking with young couples 00:21:34.22\00:21:38.59 where with we're doing, say, premarital counseling. 00:21:38.69\00:21:41.46 We tell them to sit down and write a will. 00:21:41.56\00:21:44.50 It's so important to write a will. People 00:21:44.57\00:21:48.97 think that's only for older people, but 00:21:49.04\00:21:51.31 young people need a will, especially if you 00:21:51.44\00:21:54.44 have children, you need to be saying where 00:21:54.51\00:21:56.28 they're going to go. You may not have any 00:21:56.34\00:21:58.45 assets, but what if you were in a car 00:21:58.48\00:22:00.82 accident and your estate receives 00:22:00.88\00:22:04.22 $250,000 as a payoff on that accident; 00:22:04.32\00:22:10.79 what's going to happen to it? Wills are 00:22:10.86\00:22:13.03 very important and it doesn't- it's not just 00:22:13.13\00:22:15.46 something for an old person. But what we've 00:22:15.53\00:22:18.13 done-and thank you all for the education 00:22:18.20\00:22:21.44 you've been giving all of us-is that- 00:22:21.50\00:22:23.77 - You've been listening. - We've been listening! 00:22:23.87\00:22:26.64 I just wish we'd done it a whole lot sooner 00:22:29.04\00:22:31.15 than we did do it. My grandfather lost 00:22:31.21\00:22:34.88 a fortune during the Great Depression. When 00:22:34.95\00:22:39.59 Walmart- when Walmart? When the stock market- 00:22:39.69\00:22:43.89 where did Walmart come from? When the stock 00:22:43.96\00:22:46.19 market crashed, he lost a fortune and he would 00:22:46.26\00:22:48.76 never put another penny into the stock market. 00:22:48.80\00:22:52.17 He put his money into real estate after that. 00:22:52.23\00:22:55.40 So, I've always been a little leery, quote and 00:22:55.50\00:23:01.01 quote, of "playing the stock market" is what 00:23:01.04\00:23:04.01 he called it, and we unfortunately had a 00:23:04.08\00:23:07.88 business partner who put us seriously into 00:23:07.95\00:23:10.75 debt. So, we began late in our planning for 00:23:10.85\00:23:15.06 retirement, if you will; but what we've 00:23:15.12\00:23:17.79 done is, we had some money in the bank 00:23:17.86\00:23:20.50 and we were getting 0.25% interest-something like 00:23:20.60\00:23:25.13 that-for years. Molly kept telling me, "You 00:23:25.23\00:23:29.30 need to do a cash trust! We're gettin' nearly 00:23:29.40\00:23:31.17 5% on our money!" And so we looked into it 00:23:31.24\00:23:33.84 and it was like, "Wow!" so we transferred 00:23:33.91\00:23:37.25 the money into a cash trust, and it's been 00:23:37.35\00:23:41.18 amazing the return that we get on that cash 00:23:41.28\00:23:43.65 trust with 3ABN. The way we set ours up, 00:23:43.79\00:23:47.76 there are four primary beneficiaries; 3ABN gets 00:23:47.82\00:23:54.63 25%. What we wanted to make sure was 00:23:54.70\00:23:57.23 no matter what happens, as people die off, it's 00:23:57.33\00:24:01.20 going to be equally divided among these 00:24:01.30\00:24:04.17 4. There's only 3 left is equally divided 00:24:04.27\00:24:07.48 among those 3 if somebody else dies off first. 00:24:07.54\00:24:10.05 I mean, that's the way we set it up. But now 00:24:10.11\00:24:12.68 what we're doing is setting up a property 00:24:12.71\00:24:14.75 trust and that was important to us-a self-administered property 00:24:14.85\00:24:19.05 trust-and we want to put- we got some land and we've got 00:24:19.15\00:24:22.09 a home that we want to go entirely to 3ABN. 00:24:22.16\00:24:26.13 We have a few inherited assets that- that 00:24:26.19\00:24:29.06 inheritance cost us money; it was the family 00:24:29.13\00:24:32.03 farm. That will go to our family; we're 00:24:32.13\00:24:35.60 going to keep that into the family, but 00:24:35.70\00:24:37.67 then our home here and the little land that we 00:24:37.74\00:24:39.97 own here, we want that to go entirely to 3ABN. 00:24:40.04\00:24:43.11 I think you work hard and it is very important 00:24:43.18\00:24:50.55 to us. What we have found is when Jesus 00:24:50.62\00:24:53.69 said, "Lay up treasures in heaven-not here on 00:24:53.76\00:24:58.03 earth," it is very important to us 00:24:58.09\00:25:00.60 that God's work continues on and whatever God has 00:25:00.66\00:25:06.70 entrusted us with, we feel that it's something 00:25:06.77\00:25:10.87 that we don't feel that our relatives would 00:25:10.94\00:25:14.28 necessarily help the work of God continue. 00:25:14.34\00:25:17.61 Can I say that? Is that okay? - Well, you did. 00:25:17.71\00:25:21.25 [laughter] - Well, what I'm saying is, 00:25:21.28\00:25:24.22 that's not a priority in their mind. So, 00:25:24.29\00:25:28.32 rather than risk having the money that God has 00:25:28.46\00:25:33.96 given to us-the funds or the property that 00:25:34.03\00:25:36.16 God has given to us- rather than risk 00:25:36.23\00:25:38.37 that going somewhere and just being spent on 00:25:38.43\00:25:41.87 secular goods, we want to take control of that 00:25:41.90\00:25:45.34 and make sure that 3ABN- and all of our money, 00:25:45.41\00:25:49.54 all of our property, that's already had 00:25:49.61\00:25:50.95 a tithe paid on it. The rest of it, we're 00:25:51.05\00:25:55.42 leaving to 3ABN. - And we appreciate that. 00:25:55.48\00:25:57.85 We appreciate everybody that has a burden 00:25:57.89\00:26:00.39 for the ministry, and especially 3ABN. 3ABN 00:26:00.46\00:26:04.76 has been around...34 years? - Just shy of. - Just shy 00:26:04.86\00:26:09.36 of 34, and this type of looking towards the 00:26:09.46\00:26:16.74 ministry with your finances has kept 00:26:16.84\00:26:19.44 this ministry solid. There are times when 00:26:19.51\00:26:23.18 we wonder where the funds are coming from, 00:26:23.28\00:26:25.28 but I call it long-term investment when 00:26:25.38\00:26:29.45 people do a trust because we never know when 00:26:29.55\00:26:32.99 their life comes to an end. It could be 00:26:33.15\00:26:39.29 short and it could be long-term; but when 00:26:39.39\00:26:41.46 they pass away, that money comes to 3ABN 00:26:41.53\00:26:44.87 just in time-just when we need it. - Now, 00:26:44.93\00:26:47.80 what really catches my attention, #1) I was 00:26:47.90\00:26:50.21 raised in a family that believed in giving 00:26:50.27\00:26:54.64 God what He requested, so it was a pattern 00:26:54.74\00:26:59.65 that we've followed most of our lives. 00:26:59.68\00:27:02.48 It's also very important- this is another 00:27:02.55\00:27:05.75 important point for young people that 00:27:05.79\00:27:10.86 are looking for someone to spend their life with 00:27:10.93\00:27:13.16 being equally yoked, is that we are equally 00:27:13.23\00:27:16.03 yoked in what we decide what we want 00:27:16.13\00:27:18.50 to do to help further the kingdom of- 00:27:18.57\00:27:20.00 but what I really believe is evangelism 00:27:20.10\00:27:24.87 and I am very fortunate that I get to work in 00:27:24.97\00:27:28.24 pastoral ministries here. I get to talk to 00:27:28.31\00:27:31.01 people daily that this Word is going into their 00:27:31.08\00:27:35.25 home and touching their hearts and they're 00:27:35.28\00:27:39.29 growing. They call in, "Where is the local 00:27:39.35\00:27:42.79 Seventh-Day Adventist church? Why should I do 00:27:42.89\00:27:45.89 this? Why shouldn't I do that?" So I see 00:27:45.96\00:27:48.23 the funds that are coming in to help keep this 00:27:48.30\00:27:50.90 ministry alive, producing fruit out 00:27:50.97\00:27:53.67 there. I mean, I actually get to experience 00:27:53.70\00:27:56.47 part of that. To us, that's a no-brainer 00:27:56.54\00:27:59.91 because that's where we want to contribute is 00:28:00.01\00:28:03.11 we want to see evangelism continue 00:28:03.14\00:28:05.51 to go out. We choose to believe that we're 00:28:05.58\00:28:07.82 living in the last days of this earth's history. 00:28:07.88\00:28:09.82 It's important that people ARE fed, and that's 00:28:09.88\00:28:14.89 the gift of 3ABN. It goes into people's homes, 00:28:14.96\00:28:17.93 it goes into people's offices, anybody that's 00:28:17.99\00:28:21.00 hungry gravitates to the Word immediately. 00:28:21.03\00:28:24.47 - It's exciting for me. Of all the jobs 00:28:24.57\00:28:27.47 I've had in my career, it's exciting still. I've 00:28:27.54\00:28:31.71 been starting my 9th year here at 3ABN. 00:28:31.77\00:28:34.98 It's still exciting to hear calls from our 00:28:35.04\00:28:37.48 viewers and listeners. - Amen. - They will 00:28:37.58\00:28:41.75 call in, excited about wanting to do something 00:28:41.82\00:28:44.15 for 3ABN. "How can I help 3ABN?" And 00:28:44.22\00:28:47.02 to be able to explain what we're explaining 00:28:47.12\00:28:49.69 today on the phone, I get goosebumps 00:28:49.72\00:28:53.96 and it never ends because of the excitement. 00:28:54.00\00:28:57.30 We hear people that, because they were 00:28:57.37\00:29:00.27 just converted to the church, they want 00:29:00.34\00:29:05.54 to do something immediately, and 00:29:05.61\00:29:08.14 that's exciting for me. That's one of the 00:29:08.21\00:29:10.11 benefits I get from working at 3ABN. 00:29:10.18\00:29:12.18 - So let me understand this. I make a decision 00:29:12.25\00:29:13.82 that, hey, this catches my attention, 00:29:13.92\00:29:15.78 so we call the trust department. Someone 00:29:15.88\00:29:18.35 at the trust department then gets on the line, 00:29:18.42\00:29:20.16 talks with them, goes visits them if necessary. 00:29:20.19\00:29:23.12 Okay, then let's say, hey, yes; I want 00:29:23.16\00:29:26.09 to do that self-administered trust-that property trust. Now, 00:29:26.13\00:29:31.80 say that you go visit them. "How you doin', JD? 00:29:31.87\00:29:34.24 That's good; I'm glad that y'all've come 00:29:34.27\00:29:35.64 to this decision. I think that this decision 00:29:35.67\00:29:38.21 will help add people to the kingdom of God." 00:29:38.27\00:29:41.31 And now, I signed something. So we 00:29:41.38\00:29:44.98 agree to agree 'cause I signed something. 00:29:45.05\00:29:49.12 Now, it goes to Wes. Wes looks it over. 00:29:49.18\00:29:52.72 First thing he wants to know, does he really have that? 00:29:52.79\00:29:55.49 So, I guess- an abstract or whatever needs 00:29:55.56\00:29:57.89 to be part of that package. - He's 00:29:57.96\00:30:00.00 assuming, based on the information 00:30:00.10\00:30:02.13 that we give to him, that you have what 00:30:02.20\00:30:05.07 you say you have. - Okay. And so now, 00:30:05.20\00:30:07.74 do we have an agreement then when you and I 00:30:07.77\00:30:11.01 sign or do I sit here and wait for 6 months 00:30:11.07\00:30:13.54 for this to be processed and then something 00:30:13.61\00:30:15.84 could happen in the meantime and it just 00:30:15.91\00:30:17.85 got left out in the rain some time. 00:30:17.91\00:30:20.55 - The average time, I would say, is about 00:30:20.58\00:30:21.92 6 months from the time- we set- 6 weeks. 00:30:21.95\00:30:25.72 6 weeks. Excuse me, Wesley! [laughter] 00:30:25.79\00:30:31.89 6 weeks for the turnaround. Wesley 00:30:32.99\00:30:36.70 prepares the document, comes back to you, and 00:30:36.73\00:30:40.44 if you're happy with it, you sign it and it's 00:30:40.50\00:30:42.80 legal at that point. If you're not happy 00:30:42.87\00:30:46.07 with it, you say, "I need some changes." 00:30:46.17\00:30:48.81 You can change it. Now, speaking of 00:30:48.88\00:30:52.61 changes. You have a revocable trust. You 00:30:52.68\00:30:56.15 can make a change anytime you want 00:30:56.22\00:30:59.15 while you're living except if you become 00:30:59.22\00:31:03.26 incapacitated. Wesley, can you tell us what 00:31:03.32\00:31:07.13 incapacitation means in the way of a trust? 00:31:07.23\00:31:10.37 - Typically, when a doctor says that 00:31:10.47\00:31:12.40 you're not able to make your own decisions. 00:31:12.47\00:31:14.44 The way that the trusts are written 00:31:14.50\00:31:17.37 is that if your doctor says that you are not 00:31:17.44\00:31:19.51 able to make these decisions on your 00:31:19.61\00:31:21.84 own, then you're incapacitated. At 00:31:21.94\00:31:24.38 that point, the way your trust is doesn't 00:31:24.45\00:31:27.15 change. But then if you regain your capacity, 00:31:27.22\00:31:30.12 then you can go ahead and change it again. - Right. So 00:31:30.19\00:31:32.55 that's the only time that it becomes irrevocable 00:31:32.65\00:31:35.99 is at the time you're incapacitated. - Does 00:31:36.06\00:31:39.29 the doctor have to sign something so 00:31:39.39\00:31:41.03 that there's an official statement coming from 00:31:41.06\00:31:43.50 the doctor that's part of the package as far 00:31:43.57\00:31:45.43 as when if you're incapacitated, there's 00:31:45.47\00:31:48.20 something that someone could say, "Well, 00:31:48.24\00:31:49.64 the doctor says he's incapacitated. I want 00:31:49.70\00:31:51.11 to take care of this" kind of thing. - Yeah, 00:31:51.17\00:31:53.31 you need a record to say, "This is in record." 00:31:53.41\00:31:55.84 That's what's occurred that the individual 00:31:55.91\00:32:01.15 does not have the capacity to make 00:32:01.22\00:32:03.69 those decisions. - You know, some things 00:32:03.75\00:32:06.62 on my mind I just want to say before I forget 00:32:06.72\00:32:08.46 is you mentioned about people who wanted to 00:32:08.52\00:32:12.39 do their own wills or perhaps they go 00:32:12.46\00:32:14.50 somewhere else. If you go to an attorney, 00:32:14.60\00:32:17.40 you can pay out a nice little fee for a 00:32:17.47\00:32:21.64 will or especially for a trust. You can pay 00:32:21.70\00:32:24.37 out a nice little fee. What do we charge 00:32:24.44\00:32:26.68 for wills and trusts? - We don't charge a 00:32:26.71\00:32:29.28 dime. - That's why. We need to advertise 00:32:29.31\00:32:32.31 that because- - We talk about it all 00:32:32.38\00:32:34.68 the time and you got ahead of me, and that's 00:32:34.72\00:32:37.49 fine. You're the person that we're looking 00:32:37.55\00:32:41.59 towards to do something with 3ABN the way 00:32:41.69\00:32:45.33 of a trust, so that's a good question. How 00:32:45.39\00:32:48.03 much is it going to cost me? Absolutely 00:32:48.10\00:32:50.43 nothing. For the preparation, for the 00:32:50.50\00:32:53.13 deed preparation... Recording the deed 00:32:53.23\00:32:57.74 is up to the individual that is doing the 00:32:57.81\00:33:00.44 trust, but the major expense of doing a 00:33:00.51\00:33:03.18 trust is covered by 3ABN. - Amen! - That's an 00:33:03.28\00:33:08.02 important selling point. Years ago, there was 00:33:08.12\00:33:11.05 this push on television- it was kind of like 00:33:11.09\00:33:13.46 will in a box. You just order this box 00:33:13.52\00:33:16.06 and you filed some papers and you 00:33:16.12\00:33:17.46 got this will done, but it was being challenged 00:33:17.49\00:33:19.49 in court by other family members because 00:33:19.59\00:33:22.53 you had this will in a box, sometimes 00:33:22.60\00:33:24.03 signed; sometimes unsigned, sometimes notarized, 00:33:24.17\00:33:26.57 sometimes not notarized. Of course, any time 00:33:26.63\00:33:29.24 you get challenged, you get people making 00:33:29.30\00:33:31.47 money on your money, trying to defend your 00:33:31.57\00:33:33.68 case, so the idea that 3ABN absorbs 00:33:33.78\00:33:37.05 that cost is, to me, a great inducement 00:33:37.11\00:33:40.05 to get something done official that will take 00:33:40.12\00:33:43.18 care of your needs and your desires once you've 00:33:43.28\00:33:44.92 passed on. - Now, we need to move on 00:33:44.99\00:33:47.56 just a bit; our time is getting short. We 00:33:47.59\00:33:50.86 talked about wills and trusts. If there 00:33:50.93\00:33:54.20 are any questions from anyone that's 00:33:54.26\00:33:56.73 viewing or listening, please call us. We're 00:33:56.83\00:33:59.47 willing to talk to you at any time. 00:33:59.53\00:34:02.84 You can ask the same question several times. 00:34:02.87\00:34:04.91 We want to make sure you understand it 00:34:04.97\00:34:07.94 'cause we don't want you to be in the dark when you go into 00:34:08.01\00:34:10.25 a trust. - The next item I want 00:34:10.31\00:34:14.45 to bring up- - What's the phone 00:34:14.55\00:34:15.88 number that they should call? - It is: 00:34:15.92\00:34:17.72 That's right at the bottom of the screen there. 00:34:22.26\00:34:24.23 We appreciate that. We are open Monday 00:34:24.36\00:34:27.33 through Thursday. We're never open on Friday, 00:34:27.40\00:34:29.83 Saturday, or Sunday. So those 4 days, we're 00:34:29.86\00:34:33.54 willing to take your calls. Annuities. 00:34:33.67\00:34:37.41 Charitable gift annuities. This is another form 00:34:37.51\00:34:41.54 of helping 3ABN. It is investing in 3ABN, 00:34:41.64\00:34:47.95 and when you do that, you get an interest 00:34:48.05\00:34:50.99 payment on a monthly basis or a quarterly 00:34:51.05\00:34:54.82 basis depending on how much you actually 00:34:54.92\00:34:57.26 put into the annuity. Annuity is an irrevocable 00:34:57.36\00:35:02.16 document. I want to be very clear on 00:35:02.30\00:35:04.97 that. It's irrevocable. The money that you 00:35:05.03\00:35:09.87 put in, say- I always use $100,000. It can 00:35:09.94\00:35:13.68 be less; the minimum is 5,000, but I use 00:35:13.78\00:35:16.44 100,000 as just a round figure. Is 00:35:16.51\00:35:20.12 that round enough for you? [laughter] 00:35:20.18\00:35:24.75 That money is invested and we pay you based 00:35:26.79\00:35:31.79 on your age at the time that you purchase 00:35:31.89\00:35:34.36 the annuity. Once you bought that annuity, 00:35:34.43\00:35:38.40 you get that same interest rate for the 00:35:38.47\00:35:41.30 rest of your life. 3ABN is obligated to pay 00:35:41.37\00:35:45.24 that money for as long as you live. 00:35:45.31\00:35:48.14 Based on your age- we just had an increase 00:35:48.21\00:35:53.72 in what we pay- the interest payments 00:35:53.75\00:35:57.65 that we make. Starting July 1st of 2018, 00:35:57.75\00:36:02.69 the rates will go up at about half a percent. 00:36:02.72\00:36:05.69 So, if you're 70 years old, you're going to 00:36:05.76\00:36:09.00 earn 5.6% for the rest of your life. 00:36:09.06\00:36:13.07 You know that payment's going to be consistent 00:36:13.17\00:36:14.87 every single month or quarter depending on 00:36:14.97\00:36:18.21 how much that you put in. If you put in 00:36:18.27\00:36:21.11 $50,000 or less, we pay on a quarterly 00:36:21.14\00:36:25.28 basis. Now, you might twist my arm a little 00:36:25.38\00:36:29.35 bit and say, "I need it monthly," and I'll 00:36:29.45\00:36:32.89 probably acquiesce. We want to make you 00:36:32.92\00:36:36.93 happy. But at the same time, administrative 00:36:36.99\00:36:39.79 costs are such that a quarterly payment 00:36:39.83\00:36:43.43 works best for 3ABN for anything under 50,000. 00:36:43.50\00:36:48.80 Anything over, you put in 100,000, you're 00:36:48.94\00:36:51.97 going to get paid on a monthly basis. 00:36:52.04\00:36:54.71 Now, you can have a single annuity, which 00:36:54.74\00:36:57.91 is just one person, or you can have a joint 00:36:57.98\00:37:00.98 annuity with your spouse or a child 00:37:01.08\00:37:06.19 that is old enough that it would make sense 00:37:06.32\00:37:09.39 to do an annuity. And I say, "make sense," 00:37:09.46\00:37:12.59 because really, at age 65 is kind of where 00:37:12.66\00:37:16.53 it makes sense to do an annuity. If you 00:37:16.63\00:37:19.87 did it any earlier, your percentage would 00:37:19.93\00:37:22.14 be a lot less and we don't want to tie 00:37:22.20\00:37:24.24 you into something that may be a 3% interest 00:37:24.31\00:37:27.51 payment for the rest of your life. We say 65 00:37:27.58\00:37:31.91 is the limit. Now, what happens to that money 00:37:32.01\00:37:36.75 when you pass away? If you're single, 00:37:36.85\00:37:40.96 as quick as you pass away, 100% of the 00:37:41.02\00:37:44.83 money comes to 3ABN. Whatever's left in 00:37:44.89\00:37:48.03 that account. If it's a joint account, 00:37:48.10\00:37:51.57 one spouse passes away, then the surviving 00:37:51.63\00:37:56.57 spouse continues to receive the payment 00:37:56.67\00:37:58.64 until they pass away. When that happens, 00:37:58.74\00:38:02.48 then what's left comes to 3ABN. You get a 00:38:02.51\00:38:05.61 tax deduction. Most of your payment is tax free. 00:38:05.71\00:38:10.29 So, there's an incentive to do a tax to 00:38:10.35\00:38:14.29 charitable gift annuity. But remember, 00:38:14.39\00:38:17.66 in doing it, it's irrevocable. If 00:38:17.76\00:38:20.63 you put your money in, you cannot get it 00:38:20.70\00:38:23.03 out. You get your interest payment on 00:38:23.10\00:38:26.07 a regular basis. Some people get confused 00:38:26.20\00:38:29.60 with that. They think they can draw out 00:38:29.70\00:38:31.67 and they cannot. So, that is something that 00:38:31.74\00:38:37.15 helps 3ABN. We did a lot of charitable gift 00:38:37.21\00:38:39.71 annuities years ago, and as time's gone 00:38:39.78\00:38:44.55 along, the interest rates have not changed 00:38:44.62\00:38:47.86 a lot. Usually, when an interest rate 00:38:47.92\00:38:49.96 goes up, everybody wants one. We haven't 00:38:50.03\00:38:52.93 had a change since 2012. July 1st 2018 then 00:38:52.99\00:39:01.40 interest rates our going up. So, after July 00:39:01.44\00:39:05.34 1st, give us a call and we'll work with 00:39:05.41\00:39:07.48 you. - I think that what we're talking about 00:39:07.54\00:39:12.45 today is estate planning for eternity. It's 00:39:12.51\00:39:16.75 something that, to us, to JD and I-and as you 00:39:16.85\00:39:23.12 said, I'm so glad we're equally yoked 00:39:23.19\00:39:24.53 on this-but supporting the work of the Lord 00:39:24.56\00:39:28.26 is incredibly important to us. We're so 00:39:28.36\00:39:30.90 blessed to be here and to be able to 00:39:30.93\00:39:33.34 have a life of purpose that- that's a great 00:39:33.40\00:39:37.27 blessing! But it is our privilege to 00:39:37.31\00:39:40.54 support God's work here and to support the 00:39:40.58\00:39:43.01 general conference with our tithe, and 00:39:43.08\00:39:45.81 we give our local church the offering. But to 00:39:45.91\00:39:48.48 me, it's something that gives me such a- 00:39:48.58\00:39:54.06 you know, as you grow older and begin to 00:39:54.16\00:39:57.86 contemplate your own mortality-you know, 00:39:57.89\00:40:01.53 we don't put on immortality till that 00:40:01.60\00:40:03.37 last trump as according to 1 Corinthians 15:53. 00:40:03.43\00:40:06.77 But you contemplate the idea of, "Whoops! 00:40:06.87\00:40:10.44 How many more good years do I have left? 00:40:10.54\00:40:12.31 Whoops! How many years do I have left?" 00:40:12.41\00:40:14.51 It is so wonderful to know that what 00:40:14.61\00:40:19.71 your life's efforts have gone toward, what you've 00:40:19.78\00:40:23.55 accumulated, what God has entrusted to you as a 00:40:23.59\00:40:27.22 steward, to know that you can still play a part 00:40:27.36\00:40:31.63 after you're gone that there are still going 00:40:31.69\00:40:35.36 to be souls who are won to the kingdom 00:40:35.46\00:40:38.33 by the message that's going forward over 00:40:38.43\00:40:41.00 the air. That's what motivates us. 00:40:41.07\00:40:43.27 - Amen. - We talk about the term 'legacy.' 00:40:44.67\00:40:47.94 What do we leave? You can live your life 00:40:48.04\00:40:52.28 for your life, for your family, and of course 00:40:52.38\00:40:54.65 you need to support your family, but the 00:40:54.75\00:40:56.55 idea that there's something bigger 00:40:56.62\00:40:58.09 that needs to be supported-there's 00:40:58.19\00:40:59.95 something grander that you can tie yourself 00:41:00.02\00:41:03.46 into that you can align yourself with 00:41:03.53\00:41:05.73 that has bearing upon the future 00:41:05.79\00:41:10.10 of humanity. Now, that's very big and 00:41:10.17\00:41:12.03 very grandiose, but it is all very true that 00:41:12.10\00:41:14.87 what we do, what one little person with 00:41:14.97\00:41:17.61 God's blessing and dedication to the 00:41:17.64\00:41:23.28 Lord, can do to prolong the reach of the gospel 00:41:23.38\00:41:27.88 to the world is- first of all, it's 00:41:27.95\00:41:32.75 heady, but it's also something that 00:41:32.82\00:41:34.66 ought to direct how you live your life 00:41:34.76\00:41:36.89 so that these kinds of ministries can go on 00:41:36.99\00:41:39.79 and do the work of the Lord long-term. 00:41:39.86\00:41:41.86 - Amen. - And this would be a good time 00:41:41.93\00:41:43.30 to mention- guess we've talked about what 00:41:43.37\00:41:46.13 you can do for 3ABN. We also want to include 00:41:46.23\00:41:51.54 the family in what we do. I feel like God says 00:41:51.61\00:41:57.15 we need to be prudent in what we do for our 00:41:57.25\00:41:59.81 family and for 3ABN. Our minimum- when 00:41:59.91\00:42:03.79 you do a trust, a minimum of 25% 00:42:03.85\00:42:08.36 only when you pass away, that money doesn't 00:42:08.42\00:42:11.36 come to 3ABN before that time; but when you 00:42:11.43\00:42:14.20 pass away- when both, if there's a surviving 00:42:14.26\00:42:17.93 spouse, when the surviving spouse passes away, then 00:42:17.97\00:42:20.97 we go to work on the trust, a minimum of 25% 00:42:21.04\00:42:25.41 comes to us after everything is completed. 00:42:25.47\00:42:27.94 You can give 100% if you want, but we 00:42:27.98\00:42:31.18 say 25%. We always say it's between you 00:42:31.25\00:42:34.62 and God. Once you make that decision, we're 00:42:34.68\00:42:38.45 here to facilitate your wishes. We 00:42:38.59\00:42:41.56 encourage family participation because 00:42:41.66\00:42:46.63 a lot of times, children feel like the 00:42:46.70\00:42:50.87 ministry was taken- was thought of before 00:42:50.93\00:42:55.47 them. In some cases, they were, and we 00:42:55.50\00:42:59.37 want to avoid any possibility of a 00:42:59.41\00:43:02.74 family issue. We're not here to divide families 00:43:02.84\00:43:06.92 in any way. We want the families to be kept in 00:43:07.02\00:43:10.72 mind in the planning process. - This sounds 00:43:10.82\00:43:15.72 like- I've heard you say, Roy, many 00:43:15.82\00:43:17.53 times, that- at boarding meeting- 00:43:17.59\00:43:18.93 and Shelley touched on this before-the idea 00:43:18.96\00:43:20.73 that if you have 3 children, make 3ABN 00:43:20.80\00:43:23.93 that fourth, and then divide that forward so that 00:43:23.97\00:43:26.17 the children are not feeling 3ABN's getting 00:43:26.23\00:43:28.47 everything and we're getting nothing, but 00:43:28.54\00:43:30.77 divide it equally so that everybody is fine 00:43:30.91\00:43:33.54 with their portion. That's the kind of 00:43:33.61\00:43:35.71 nice, quick way to do that. - Yes. So, we get 00:43:35.78\00:43:39.28 involved in many situations that probably 00:43:39.31\00:43:44.95 could've been avoided if the children were 00:43:45.02\00:43:46.79 involved in the process from the get-go. 00:43:46.89\00:43:49.76 So, we always encourage families 00:43:49.79\00:43:51.99 to be a family and talk about what Mom 00:43:52.13\00:43:54.83 and Dad are going to be doing. - I would 00:43:54.90\00:43:57.93 assume that also is very beneficial in 00:43:58.00\00:44:00.87 the family setting to have an advocate or 00:44:00.94\00:44:03.91 who you're working through that's going to 00:44:03.94\00:44:06.14 represent you upon your demise rather 00:44:06.21\00:44:08.81 than it just shows up in a will someplace, 00:44:08.88\00:44:11.28 and then all of a sudden, there could be 00:44:11.35\00:44:14.25 a war. But if there's someone that says, 00:44:14.32\00:44:16.69 "Well, this is your parents' wishes." 00:44:16.75\00:44:19.19 They're all involved, so there's that person 00:44:19.22\00:44:22.92 there that's actually representing you rather 00:44:23.02\00:44:25.79 than just dropping it out there. 00:44:25.86\00:44:27.76 - I need to touch on another form of 00:44:27.83\00:44:31.87 investment. We have a lot of things and I 00:44:31.93\00:44:35.47 don't want the eyes to start glazing over 00:44:35.57\00:44:38.37 so much information. That's why we say after 00:44:38.44\00:44:42.41 this program, if you have questions, call 00:44:42.48\00:44:45.81 us and we'll answer any questions that 00:44:45.88\00:44:49.42 you might have. But a cash trust, you 00:44:49.48\00:44:52.72 touched on earlier is another form of 00:44:52.79\00:44:55.59 investing with 3ABN. In this particular case, 00:44:55.69\00:44:59.93 it's a revocable document, which means 00:44:59.96\00:45:03.70 you own the money and you can withdraw 00:45:03.80\00:45:07.30 from that account if necessary. It's not 00:45:07.40\00:45:11.47 meant to be a savings account where you 00:45:11.54\00:45:15.18 can withdraw all the time. You can always 00:45:15.28\00:45:17.45 deposit any time that you want. There's 00:45:17.51\00:45:20.18 never a problem. But if you start withdrawing 00:45:20.28\00:45:22.55 on a regular basis, it doesn't do you 00:45:22.58\00:45:26.59 any good to have it here or it doesn't do 3ABN 00:45:26.65\00:45:29.52 because we have to administer all of 00:45:29.62\00:45:31.73 that. That's- we're not a bank. We're 00:45:31.79\00:45:34.83 a ministry. - This is like a savings- 00:45:34.96\00:45:37.33 take your place of a savings account, 00:45:37.40\00:45:40.27 I mean. - It does take of the place, 00:45:40.34\00:45:41.67 but in a savings account, you can 00:45:41.70\00:45:43.34 withdraw all the time. We say here that 00:45:43.41\00:45:45.74 you can withdraw on an emergency basis. 00:45:45.77\00:45:48.64 We don't say what the emergency is. 00:45:48.74\00:45:51.75 People will use it for paying their taxes 00:45:51.81\00:45:54.32 or if they had a car accident, they 00:45:54.38\00:45:56.42 need to repair the car, buy a new car, they want 00:45:56.55\00:46:00.29 to withdraw, that's fine. That's not a problem. 00:46:00.39\00:46:03.02 But if that happens on a regular basis, 00:46:03.06\00:46:05.36 then it's probably best that you keep 00:46:05.46\00:46:08.86 the money in the bank where you have quick 00:46:09.00\00:46:11.00 access to it. The interest rate for 00:46:11.07\00:46:13.67 a cash trust- it's not a guaranteed 00:46:13.74\00:46:16.44 interest rate. However, since I've been here- 00:46:16.50\00:46:20.78 and I said I'm starting my 9th year-we 00:46:20.84\00:46:23.68 have never paid anything less than 4.2% on 00:46:23.78\00:46:27.82 a yearly basis. - It's incredible. We just 00:46:27.88\00:46:32.29 absolutely- - I can remember one 00:46:32.35\00:46:34.72 year-one month-in December, we paid 00:46:34.82\00:46:38.93 9% and Wesley called me, 'cause he has a 00:46:39.03\00:46:44.30 cash trust with us and he says, "Roy, you 00:46:44.40\00:46:47.24 made a mistake." I said, "No, Wesley. 00:46:47.30\00:46:51.34 Merry Christmas." That is what was actually 00:46:51.41\00:46:53.64 paid out that particular month. 00:46:53.71\00:46:56.44 Now, to arrive at that 4.2%, what we do 00:46:56.54\00:47:00.58 is take 12 months of interest that we 00:47:00.65\00:47:03.15 paid on a monthly basis, divide that by 00:47:03.25\00:47:06.05 12, and that's what you actually earned for that 00:47:06.15\00:47:09.66 year. - I'd like to add that that has been 00:47:09.72\00:47:12.89 very stable and that paid out at least 4%, 00:47:12.99\00:47:16.87 even through the financial crisis that we had 00:47:16.97\00:47:19.20 in 2008, 2009, when everything crashed. The mortgage 00:47:19.23\00:47:24.97 market was going crazy; the cash trusts 00:47:25.07\00:47:28.04 kept paying along 4%. - Here's what happened 00:47:28.14\00:47:31.85 in that particular situation. Nobody 00:47:31.95\00:47:35.62 lost anything on their principle. If you put 00:47:35.68\00:47:39.49 in $100,000-that's my magic number 00:47:39.55\00:47:41.82 again-it should be still there. If you 00:47:41.92\00:47:46.39 were earning an interest rate that was higher, 00:47:46.46\00:47:49.03 you probably didn't earn that same 00:47:49.10\00:47:51.43 interest rate; you earned at a lower rate. 00:47:51.53\00:47:53.54 Nobody lost a dime. - But still so much 00:47:55.57\00:47:57.34 more than what the banks paid. - And I think that's the 00:47:57.44\00:48:00.04 bottom line, that the bank can't touch those numbers 00:48:00.11\00:48:01.84 and those numbers have been consistent for a 00:48:01.91\00:48:04.61 fairly long period of time now. - And 00:48:04.68\00:48:06.98 we have many bankers tell our respective 00:48:07.08\00:48:09.92 clients, "There's no way a ministry can 00:48:09.98\00:48:11.95 pay you that kind of money." And they 00:48:12.09\00:48:14.16 will try to confuse our people that want to 00:48:14.26\00:48:17.59 do something. All I say is, "Have those 00:48:17.69\00:48:20.86 people call me and I will let them know 00:48:20.93\00:48:24.97 what actually happens and how we invest and 00:48:25.00\00:48:27.64 how we pay that money." The Lord is very good 00:48:27.70\00:48:30.97 to 3ABN. - Amen. - He's done a wonderful 00:48:31.01\00:48:34.14 work for 3ABN; we're working for Him. We're 00:48:34.21\00:48:39.11 spreading His Word around the world, 00:48:39.18\00:48:41.68 so we're doing everything we can to facilitate the 00:48:41.75\00:48:46.89 Second Coming of our Lord. Something I 00:48:46.96\00:48:51.26 haven't touched on that I definitely want to 00:48:51.33\00:48:55.06 mention is the IRA. We get a lot of calls. 00:48:55.13\00:48:58.03 A couple of years ago, the government 00:48:58.10\00:49:01.30 passed a new law that was permanent which 00:49:01.40\00:49:05.34 says, "If you are 70 and a half, 00:49:05.47\00:49:08.14 you have an IRA; you have to take a 00:49:08.21\00:49:10.88 required minimum distribution on that IRA." 00:49:10.91\00:49:14.08 Whatever that amount is, you have to take 00:49:14.18\00:49:16.92 it every year once you turn 70 and a half. 00:49:16.99\00:49:20.12 What the government said was that you 00:49:20.19\00:49:25.79 can donate that amount and anything up to $100,000. 00:49:25.86\00:49:33.20 It has to be a straight donation to 3ABN. 00:49:34.14\00:49:36.97 It can't be used to start an annuity; 00:49:37.04\00:49:39.47 it can't be used to start a cash trust. 00:49:39.54\00:49:42.58 It has to be a donation. So, we have people 00:49:42.64\00:49:45.28 that will donate what they actually take out 00:49:45.35\00:49:47.95 that they're required to take out. Call us 00:49:48.02\00:49:51.05 before you do it because there are 00:49:51.15\00:49:52.99 some strict laws the IRS has put in place, 00:49:53.05\00:49:58.59 and we want to make sure you do it correctly 00:49:58.63\00:50:01.13 or you won't get the tax benefit for doing 00:50:01.20\00:50:04.13 it. The tax benefit is, you don't have 00:50:04.20\00:50:07.20 to report it as income. You just- it doesn't 00:50:07.30\00:50:12.27 show up on your tax report at all. We 00:50:12.34\00:50:15.58 send your receipt in case the government 00:50:15.64\00:50:18.05 says, "Hey, you got this much money. 00:50:18.11\00:50:21.98 What'd you do with it?" You can show this 00:50:22.05\00:50:23.45 receipt and say, "This was a donation," 00:50:23.52\00:50:26.45 and there's never a problem 'cause it is 00:50:26.55\00:50:28.82 actual law. We've had many, many people 00:50:28.89\00:50:32.19 do that. So, if you are 70 and a half 00:50:32.23\00:50:35.36 and want to do something for 3ABN, call us and 00:50:35.43\00:50:39.97 we'll walk you through the easy steps to make 00:50:40.04\00:50:42.40 it happen. - Amen. - I just want- 00:50:42.50\00:50:46.11 do you have- can I tell a little story? - Sure. 00:50:46.17\00:50:48.64 R. G. LeTourneau lived during the 00:50:48.71\00:50:51.01 1900s and he was a businessman who was 00:50:51.08\00:50:53.31 greatly in debt. God started working with 00:50:53.42\00:50:57.29 his heart that he needed to do something 00:50:57.35\00:50:58.95 more for God, so he went to his pastor 00:50:59.05\00:51:01.22 and he said, "I want to be a missionary," and 00:51:01.32\00:51:03.16 the pastor said, "No, God needs businessmen, 00:51:03.22\00:51:05.23 as well," so R. G. LeTourneau prayed 00:51:05.29\00:51:08.23 about it and then he committed to 00:51:08.30\00:51:09.90 pay an honest tithe and then to make 00:51:09.96\00:51:12.20 some large offerings that he didn't have. 00:51:12.23\00:51:14.24 Well, guess what happened? He just- 00:51:14.27\00:51:16.57 God started bringing in the business. 00:51:16.71\00:51:18.44 Pretty soon, R. G. LeTourneau is known 00:51:18.54\00:51:21.71 for giving 90% to the Lord's work and living 00:51:21.74\00:51:25.58 off 10% and he's famous for saying, 00:51:25.61\00:51:28.68 "It's not how much of my money I give to 00:51:28.75\00:51:32.42 God but how much of God's money I 00:51:32.49\00:51:34.76 keep for myself." You know, there's an 00:51:34.82\00:51:37.69 old saying. You can't out-give God. Let 00:51:37.76\00:51:40.43 me tell you, nobody's trying. You know? 00:51:40.50\00:51:44.03 Nobody's trying to! But it's a blessing 00:51:44.10\00:51:46.80 to be a part of this ministry. - And then 00:51:46.87\00:51:50.97 we have a God-given law, a mandate, that 00:51:51.07\00:51:53.98 if you give, God will support your giving 00:51:54.04\00:51:56.64 and give back to you.
