' " 00:08:53.29\00:08:57.40 Now, tell me Pastor Mark, 00:08:57.43\00:08:59.07 why specifically you chose this Scripture. 00:08:59.10\00:09:01.10 Of course, you know, in soul winning... 00:09:01.14\00:09:03.04 people accused me of doing it because it was in Mark... 00:09:03.07\00:09:05.27 but it's the only one in the gospels 00:09:05.31\00:09:08.61 that, you know, we've heard that Jesus says, 00:09:08.64\00:09:10.31 "I'll make you fishers of men" 00:09:10.35\00:09:12.05 but I like that word "become" 00:09:12.08\00:09:13.75 because "become" implies that it's something that you weren't 00:09:13.78\00:09:16.65 but you will be through the grace of Christ 00:09:16.69\00:09:18.65 and when it comes to sharing our faith, 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.56 how many people say, "Well, I just can't do that, 00:09:20.62\00:09:22.39 I guess I'm nervous about it. " 00:09:22.42\00:09:23.76 You can become a witness for Christ 00:09:23.79\00:09:26.09 through the power of the Holy Spirit 00:09:26.13\00:09:28.66 and so, that's why I particularly like that verse. 00:09:28.70\00:09:30.63 Jill: Amen... amen... Greg: Wow! that's powerful, 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.57 yeah fantastic... we have some music 00:09:32.60\00:09:34.40 and then we'll get into Emmanuel Institute, 00:09:34.47\00:09:35.80 who's our music from today? 00:14:34.64\00:14:36.04 Greg: Yeah... feel impressed to come up with 00:14:36.07\00:14:37.41 such an Institute? 00:14:37.44\00:14:38.77 When we were coming up with a name for Emmanuel Institute, 00:14:38.81\00:14:41.24 we wanted something 00:14:41.28\00:14:42.61 that had some Adventist-history flavor to it 00:14:42.64\00:14:44.78 and we'll talk about that maybe when we talk about 00:14:44.81\00:14:48.38 the significance of the message of evangelism 00:14:48.42\00:14:49.98 but obviously, "Emmanuel" is a name 00:14:50.02\00:14:53.29 the Bible uses for the Lord, 00:14:53.32\00:14:54.82 and I suppose, from the foundational level, 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.29 if you're going to be successful in reaching souls for Christ, 00:14:56.32\00:14:58.36 you've got to have "God with us" is what it really means 00:14:58.39\00:15:01.36 but in our history... 00:15:01.40\00:15:02.73 and it was the same reason that 00:15:02.76\00:15:04.20 we as a church chose that name for one of our first colleges... 00:15:04.23\00:15:07.34 it started out as the "Battle Creek College" 00:15:07.40\00:15:08.80 but it was relocated in Berrien Springs 00:15:08.84\00:15:10.51 and renamed: Emmanuel Missionary College 00:15:10.54\00:15:12.14 but it's interesting to me is 00:15:12.17\00:15:13.84 as I went back in history, I found a couple of quotes 00:15:13.88\00:15:15.74 when that college was established, 00:15:15.78\00:15:17.88 one from the Review and Herald of August 25, 1903 00:15:17.91\00:15:20.52 where it says, "Emmanuel Missionary College 00:15:20.55\00:15:22.28 has for its sole purpose the training of missionaries" 00:15:22.32\00:15:25.05 and for many people today, when we think of "missionary" 00:15:25.09\00:15:27.79 that's somebody who goes overseas 00:15:27.82\00:15:29.36 and they work in full-time ministry. 00:15:29.39\00:15:30.73 Greg: True. 00:15:30.76\00:15:32.09 But the mindset of "missionary" in our church was that 00:15:32.13\00:15:35.03 this is something every member does. 00:15:35.06\00:15:37.73 Another quote regarding the Emmanuel Missionary College 00:15:37.77\00:15:41.20 was found in the book, 00:15:41.24\00:15:43.00 "The Great Second Advent Movement" page 396 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.87 by J.N. Loughborough and he wrote, 00:15:44.94\00:15:46.37 "To qualify laborers fully prepared for work 00:15:46.44\00:15:49.74 in any part of the world where they may be called 00:15:49.78\00:15:52.08 in the providence of God to labor, 00:15:52.11\00:15:54.58 is the one great desire and aim 00:15:54.62\00:15:56.99 of the teachers of the Emmanuel Missionary College" 00:15:57.02\00:15:58.79 and the mindset... 00:15:58.85\00:16:00.19 in fact, there's a great painting on the wall of... 00:16:00.22\00:16:02.42 I forget which Hall it is at Southern Adventist University 00:16:02.46\00:16:04.39 by Nathan Greene 00:16:04.46\00:16:05.79 where it has these people in all these different occupations 00:16:05.83\00:16:08.20 nurse, doctor, architect, whatever... 00:16:08.23\00:16:10.73 and here's Jesus... has His arm around a young man 00:16:10.77\00:16:13.13 who looks like he's going into the ministry 00:16:13.17\00:16:14.50 and He's pointing them on in a direction... 00:16:14.54\00:16:15.90 the idea being that whatever your occupation is going to be, 00:16:15.94\00:16:19.37 you're a missionary for Christ if you're a disciple of Christ 00:16:19.44\00:16:22.84 and so, this every-member-missionary thing 00:16:22.88\00:16:25.35 and that's what we wanted to lay hold of 00:16:25.41\00:16:27.85 in that name, "Emmanuel" 00:16:27.88\00:16:29.22 that everyone is called to be a missionary for Christ 00:16:29.25\00:16:32.85 or witness for Christ... and that He will enable anyone 00:16:32.89\00:16:36.66 to become an effective soul winner. 00:16:36.73\00:16:39.33 It kind of goes back to the text that we started out with 00:16:39.36\00:16:42.10 because "enable" "become" 00:16:42.13\00:16:43.83 you mentioned it's not a "make. " 00:16:43.87\00:16:45.87 Exactly, you could look at it if you choose some versions... 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.87 some other gospels 00:16:48.90\00:16:50.24 where it's just... "I'll make you disciples" 00:16:50.27\00:16:52.14 "I'll make you fishers of men" I should say... 00:16:52.17\00:16:53.51 but in the "Mark" version it says, 00:16:53.54\00:16:55.71 "make you become" 00:16:55.74\00:16:57.08 the implication being... 00:16:57.11\00:16:58.45 if it was a "make" it could be understood to be 00:16:58.48\00:17:00.18 an instantaneous transaction, boom... and miraculous... 00:17:00.22\00:17:03.28 therefore you could even lend it to the idea 00:17:03.32\00:17:05.59 that it's a spiritual gift if He makes you that... 00:17:05.62\00:17:07.82 Greg: But if not... 00:17:07.86\00:17:09.32 Kameron: Exactly, if not... if it does not come naturally to me 00:17:09.36\00:17:12.13 then that might have been "made" 00:17:12.16\00:17:13.50 but He says, "Make you become" 00:17:13.53\00:17:14.86 which has a stronger tie to a process... 00:17:14.90\00:17:17.63 a training that goes on 00:17:17.67\00:17:19.00 so, I'm sure that there are many people who feel ill-equipped 00:17:19.03\00:17:22.24 or actually in reality might be bad at soul winning 00:17:22.27\00:17:25.37 but being bad at something 00:17:25.41\00:17:27.28 is not evidence that you should do it less, 00:17:27.34\00:17:29.31 it's evidence... you should do it more 00:17:29.34\00:17:31.35 and so, we want to take people who may not 00:17:31.38\00:17:33.35 be called to full-time ministry 00:17:33.38\00:17:35.45 or be the "Missionary" 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.62 in the traditional sense of going overseas as a full time... 00:17:37.65\00:17:40.56 but every member of the church 00:17:40.59\00:17:43.16 that God has called to be His Remnant messenger 00:17:43.19\00:17:45.33 should be a missionary in their context for Jesus Christ 00:17:45.36\00:17:48.86 and so, our job is to help train and equip every member 00:17:48.90\00:17:52.37 to be a missionary for Jesus. 00:17:52.40\00:17:53.74 Mark: That's right. Greg: Wow! 00:17:53.77\00:17:55.10 So, I'm thinking the quote that you read was written 00:17:55.14\00:17:57.74 several years ago... 00:17:57.77\00:17:59.34 Greg: Long time ago... 00:17:59.37\00:18:00.84 Jill: So, we're in the 21st century 00:18:00.88\00:18:02.84 and is evangelism even relevant today? 00:18:02.88\00:18:04.71 I mean, do people even come to Christ 00:18:04.75\00:18:07.55 through these methods and... 00:18:07.58\00:18:08.92 That's such an excellent question 00:18:08.95\00:18:10.62 and because I've been involved in Evangelism 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.79 I mean, we started Emmanuel in 2009... 00:18:13.82\00:18:15.29 before that, I worked at different 00:18:15.32\00:18:16.76 Evangelism training schools 00:18:16.79\00:18:18.13 I went to one myself when I first came into the faith 00:18:18.16\00:18:21.93 and it's something you hear very often 00:18:21.96\00:18:24.73 and... and... you know, it's... it's... 00:18:24.80\00:18:27.50 I can't tell you how many places I've gone to work 00:18:27.54\00:18:29.37 and people are like, "Aw... that doesn't work here anymore" 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.27 and I love that because it's a challenge 00:18:31.31\00:18:32.84 and we just did a training in Grand Rapids, Michigan, 00:18:32.87\00:18:35.01 we had about 40 people... 00:18:35.04\00:18:36.91 church members from different area churches 00:18:36.95\00:18:40.05 and we sent them out just knocking on doors 00:18:40.08\00:18:43.05 and trying to find people 00:18:43.08\00:18:44.42 interested in studying the Bible. 00:18:44.45\00:18:45.79 Greg: Were some people scared to death? 00:18:45.82\00:18:47.16 Oh, absolutely... absolutely, that happens every... 00:18:47.19\00:18:50.19 you know what happens is... 00:18:50.23\00:18:51.56 and I've seen this time and again 00:18:51.59\00:18:52.93 whether it was at one of our training session that we do 00:18:52.96\00:18:55.06 on location... we do four months 00:18:55.13\00:18:57.13 or whether I'm going into a new location for a weekend 00:18:57.17\00:19:00.64 it never fails that people are petrified to go out 00:19:00.67\00:19:03.91 and when they come back they're excited and thrilled 00:19:03.94\00:19:07.04 and if you ask them before they went out 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.84 to knock on doors or to ask people... 00:19:08.88\00:19:10.55 they're like, "Oh, I don't want to do that" 00:19:10.58\00:19:12.01 they're scared... but when they come back... 00:19:12.05\00:19:13.42 we say, "What was your favorite part?" 00:19:13.45\00:19:14.78 "Oh, it's when we went out there... " 00:19:14.82\00:19:16.15 Greg: Really? Mark: Because they see the Lord 00:19:16.18\00:19:17.62 working... Greg: Amen. 00:19:17.65\00:19:18.99 Mark: You know, the Lord says, "The harvest is plentiful" 00:19:19.02\00:19:20.59 and... and... it's the laborers who are few 00:19:20.62\00:19:23.22 and so the harvest is out there 00:19:23.26\00:19:24.59 well, anyway, we went out, 00:19:24.63\00:19:25.96 we had probably 40 people who went out 00:19:25.99\00:19:27.46 for a total... I think we had two different times we went out, 00:19:27.50\00:19:29.93 we probably spent a total of two to three hours 00:19:29.96\00:19:34.17 actually out... knocking on doors... 00:19:34.20\00:19:36.60 we had 80 people sign up for studies. 00:19:36.67\00:19:38.81 Jill: 80 people... 00:19:38.84\00:19:40.18 Mark: 80 people in that short period of time. 00:19:40.21\00:19:41.54 Jill: Amazing! Greg: Wow! 00:19:41.58\00:19:42.91 Mark: So, people keep telling me 00:19:42.94\00:19:44.28 "Well, this kind of stuff doesn't work" 00:19:44.31\00:19:45.88 and I think it was Mark Finley who said, 00:19:45.91\00:19:47.95 "I'm going to let them keep writing books 00:19:47.98\00:19:50.09 about how it doesn't work 00:19:50.12\00:19:51.45 and I'm going to keep winning souls" so... 00:19:51.49\00:19:52.82 Greg: I like that. 00:19:52.85\00:19:54.49 Mark: there is some truth though to why people start to... 00:19:54.52\00:19:58.39 they'll say, "We've done this thing in our church 00:19:58.46\00:20:00.40 and it didn't work" 00:20:00.43\00:20:01.76 we're not seeing the... and, of course, that's all subjective 00:20:01.80\00:20:05.37 like, "What does it mean, 'it didn't work?'" 00:20:05.40\00:20:06.87 They didn't see the results that they wanted 00:20:06.90\00:20:08.30 but there are reasons for that 00:20:08.34\00:20:09.84 and one of the primary reasons is when we... 00:20:09.90\00:20:13.58 and this is a very common thing we misunderstand 00:20:13.61\00:20:17.78 and we define evangelism as an event that you do... 00:20:17.81\00:20:21.92 Greg: Yeah, true. 00:20:21.98\00:20:23.32 And evangelism is not an event, it is a... 00:20:23.35\00:20:25.99 we oftentimes refer to the agricultural cycle 00:20:26.02\00:20:28.49 in fact, I'll let you touch on that... but it's a lifestyle. 00:20:28.52\00:20:32.36 Greg: Okay. Kameron: It's a process, 00:20:32.39\00:20:33.83 even when I heard you talking about it earlier 00:20:33.86\00:20:35.66 when you referenced, 00:20:35.70\00:20:37.03 "We're ought to learn about evangelism" 00:20:37.07\00:20:38.40 I feared people at home might be like, 00:20:38.43\00:20:39.77 "Oh, well that doesn't include me, 00:20:39.80\00:20:41.14 yeah, that's for the Mark Finley's events 00:20:41.17\00:20:42.80 for the big Evangelists... that's for the campaign. " 00:20:42.84\00:20:44.87 And many people... pastors included 00:20:44.91\00:20:47.18 have come to think of evangelism like Mark was saying as an event 00:20:47.21\00:20:50.88 you go to ask a local church, 00:20:50.95\00:20:52.28 "Have you all done evangelism lately?" 00:20:52.31\00:20:54.42 And they think banners... public events and the whole thing 00:20:54.45\00:20:57.49 they have picture in their head 00:20:57.52\00:20:58.85 when in reality, evangelism is not a one-off singular event 00:20:58.89\00:21:02.69 it's a process that goes through mirroring the agricultural cycle 00:21:02.72\00:21:07.56 why did Jesus talk about plants so much in His ministry? 00:21:07.60\00:21:10.77 He did talk about fish and money and... 00:21:10.80\00:21:12.63 but He would keep coming back to these themes, 00:21:12.67\00:21:15.67 the soil and the seed and the crop and the harvest 00:21:15.70\00:21:18.44 and the preserving... 00:21:18.47\00:21:19.81 and you notice that that was Christ's mindset 00:21:19.84\00:21:22.28 that He had this understanding 00:21:22.34\00:21:23.68 that the growth of the Kingdom of God 00:21:23.71\00:21:26.01 would be akin to the agricultural process 00:21:26.05\00:21:28.52 that it would not be a one-time thing 00:21:28.55\00:21:30.92 it would actually be an ongoing, recurring 00:21:30.95\00:21:33.42 and ever-widening and growing process 00:21:33.46\00:21:36.09 and we want to help get that mentality 00:21:36.12\00:21:38.73 into people's minds 00:21:38.76\00:21:40.10 that evangelism is not something that someone else does 00:21:40.13\00:21:43.23 at a location on specific dates... 00:21:43.26\00:21:45.47 that evangelism is a lifestyle, 00:21:45.50\00:21:47.64 it's part of our DNA as Christians 00:21:47.67\00:21:49.67 and particularly, the Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:21:49.70\00:21:51.77 we have a distinct message to give to the world 00:21:51.81\00:21:53.91 that we have... we have this opportunity to have this message 00:21:53.94\00:21:58.45 but what we need are more messengers 00:21:58.48\00:22:00.68 and so, that's what we're here to do. 00:22:00.72\00:22:02.85 And it's not just... 00:22:02.88\00:22:04.22 it's not just a... we say, "a lifestyle" 00:22:04.25\00:22:05.95 but there are several components 00:22:05.99\00:22:07.32 just like with the agricultural cycle, 00:22:07.36\00:22:08.96 if anybody has ever grown anything... 00:22:08.99\00:22:10.66 any of you Viewers have ever grown anything, 00:22:10.69\00:22:12.26 you go out... the first thing you've got to do is, 00:22:12.29\00:22:14.96 you got to till the ground. 00:22:15.00\00:22:16.33 Greg: That's right... prepare the soil. 00:22:16.36\00:22:17.70 Okay, you prepare the soil so... 00:22:17.73\00:22:19.07 and the reason you prepare the soil 00:22:19.10\00:22:20.44 is so you can plant the seed 00:22:20.47\00:22:21.80 and then once you plant the seed, 00:22:21.84\00:22:23.17 you get to cultivate the seed and once the seed... 00:22:23.20\00:22:24.54 all of these things are distinct and different, 00:22:24.57\00:22:26.51 once the seed has been cultivated over the summer 00:22:26.54\00:22:28.51 and you come to harvest time, right, 00:22:28.54\00:22:30.11 once you harvest, you're not done with the harvest 00:22:30.61\00:22:32.11 you've got another thing... 00:22:32.15\00:22:33.48 you've got to do something with the green that you... 00:22:33.52\00:22:34.85 Greg: Preserve it. 00:22:34.88\00:22:36.22 Mark: Yeah, you've got to preserve it and so, 00:22:36.25\00:22:37.59 you think about it in terms of the agricultural cycle 00:22:37.62\00:22:40.02 and think of it in terms of just taking one of those things. 00:22:40.06\00:22:43.06 Okay, the farmer goes out... tills the ground... 00:22:43.09\00:22:44.69 tills the ground, tills the ground... 00:22:44.73\00:22:46.49 he goes out in the fall and he's like, 00:22:46.53\00:22:48.23 "I don't know... I don't get it, I don't get it, 00:22:48.26\00:22:50.03 I guess, farming doesn't work anymore 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.53 because I don't have a crop. " 00:22:51.57\00:22:52.90 Well, it would be ludicrous to do that 00:22:52.93\00:22:55.47 and yet, in the spiritual application 00:22:55.50\00:22:58.04 preparing the soil to make the way for the seed, 00:22:58.07\00:23:01.01 Jesus said, "The seed is the Word of God. " 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.41 So, preparing the soil is, "What do you do... " 00:23:02.44\00:23:05.55 I mean, listen, we live in a day and age 00:23:05.58\00:23:07.92 where it's understandable that people are skeptical 00:23:07.98\00:23:11.92 when you come knocking on the door 00:23:11.95\00:23:13.29 or even if you see them... and then invite them in to... 00:23:13.32\00:23:15.39 "You want Bible Studies or something... " 00:23:15.42\00:23:16.76 and they're like, "Who are you?" 00:23:16.79\00:23:18.13 And so, when Ellen White talks about Christ's message, 00:23:18.16\00:23:20.73 she talks about He... 00:23:20.76\00:23:22.10 first He won the confidence of people, 00:23:22.13\00:23:24.13 you go through that... that soil preparation phase 00:23:24.17\00:23:27.54 so that people are more open to the seed, okay, 00:23:27.57\00:23:30.84 but the whole reason the farmer's tilling the ground 00:23:30.87\00:23:33.88 is for the purpose of planting the seed 00:23:33.91\00:23:36.31 you would never just see the farmer just out there tilling, 00:23:36.34\00:23:38.51 tilling... tilling... tilling and never doing anything else, 00:23:38.55\00:23:40.65 but yet, as Christians, 00:23:40.72\00:23:42.25 how many times are we making friends with people 00:23:42.28\00:23:44.25 which is important 00:23:44.29\00:23:45.65 but we never introduce something spiritual, 00:23:45.69\00:23:47.59 saying, "I don't know, they might be offended. " 00:23:47.62\00:23:48.96 Jill: We don't make the bridge. 00:23:48.99\00:23:50.33 We don't make the bridge to the next... 00:23:50.36\00:23:52.13 or we focus on... on one phase... 00:23:52.16\00:23:54.80 maybe we're trying to plant seeds all the time 00:23:54.83\00:23:56.73 but we're never building the relationships 00:23:56.90\00:23:58.23 to prepare the soil. 00:23:58.27\00:23:59.60 Maybe we're trying to harvest 00:23:59.63\00:24:00.97 and this happens all the time, 00:24:01.00\00:24:02.40 we hold an Evangelistic Meeting 00:24:02.47\00:24:04.11 so now, imagine it in the reverse, 00:24:04.14\00:24:05.47 well, kind of the same... the harvest... 00:24:05.51\00:24:07.58 the farmer's looking for a harvest to crop 00:24:07.61\00:24:09.61 but he never planted anything, 00:24:09.64\00:24:12.11 and he gets a few... 00:24:12.18\00:24:13.52 as one may be interested... a few wild strawberries... 00:24:13.55\00:24:14.88 so, you can't neglect one of those pieces 00:24:14.92\00:24:19.42 and then fault evangelism. 00:24:19.45\00:24:20.96 Greg: Right. Jill: It's good. 00:24:20.99\00:24:22.46 And there are churches who will... who have this... 00:24:22.49\00:24:24.59 "Evangelism-as-an-event mentality" 00:24:24.63\00:24:27.06 they compartmentalize it and separate it out 00:24:27.10\00:24:28.93 and then... they'll kind of review, 00:24:28.96\00:24:30.57 "What shall we do as a church?" 00:24:30.60\00:24:31.93 Because they want to do something, 00:24:31.97\00:24:33.30 I think there's an inherent drive 00:24:33.34\00:24:34.67 inside of any born-again Christian to do something 00:24:34.70\00:24:36.14 but they may not know exactly what it is, 00:24:36.17\00:24:38.04 and they'll say, "Oh, we're going to do this... " 00:24:38.07\00:24:39.87 and they'll do "Felt-Needs Community Outreach" 00:24:39.91\00:24:41.34 which are fantastic 00:24:41.38\00:24:42.71 but then they'll say, "That is our evangelism" 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.11 or they'll do a campaign... a big campaign 00:24:45.18\00:24:47.72 or they'll do just the Bible Study Offers 00:24:47.75\00:24:50.22 and they'll send out, like, literature and Glow Tracts... 00:24:50.25\00:24:52.32 all of which are good 00:24:52.35\00:24:53.86 but we end up having a... a method 00:24:53.89\00:24:55.52 where you're having a few good things 00:24:55.56\00:24:57.46 disconnected from each other 00:24:57.49\00:24:58.83 and the results are still not significant 00:24:58.86\00:25:01.90 and I think the rationale behind that 00:25:01.93\00:25:04.20 is that you're not doing bad things, 00:25:04.23\00:25:06.43 you're just doing a bad process of tying them all together 00:25:06.47\00:25:09.07 and having... because you look at that statement, 00:25:09.10\00:25:10.81 "Christ's method alone" right, 00:25:10.84\00:25:12.17 she talks about how it's Christ's method alone 00:25:12.21\00:25:13.98 that brings true success 00:25:14.01\00:25:15.34 which, by-the-way, that means there could be false success too 00:25:15.38\00:25:17.85 but if you want genuine true success, 00:25:17.88\00:25:19.98 you follow these steps but He mingled with them 00:25:20.02\00:25:22.28 and won their confidence 00:25:22.32\00:25:23.65 and then He bid them, "Follow me" 00:25:23.69\00:25:25.75 so Christ's method alone is a process... 00:25:25.79\00:25:28.19 it starts with this... and then leads to this with a goal of... 00:25:28.22\00:25:31.53 so that each phase in the process 00:25:31.56\00:25:33.66 is looking forward to the next phase of the process, 00:25:33.70\00:25:35.70 I prepared that soil with the expectation... 00:25:35.73\00:25:38.63 I'm getting that ready for the seed, 00:25:38.67\00:25:40.00 I'm getting those rows ready for the seed 00:25:40.04\00:25:41.37 and when you put the seed in, you don't say, 00:25:41.40\00:25:42.87 "All right, that's done, 00:25:42.90\00:25:44.24 I'm looking forward to the crop so that I can help it grow 00:25:44.27\00:25:46.44 and then I can have a harvest" 00:25:46.47\00:25:47.81 and then you've got to preserve it 00:25:47.84\00:25:49.18 and then they become in turn workers in the field 00:25:49.21\00:25:51.91 and so it's a cycle that never ends. 00:25:51.95\00:25:54.45 So, we've recognized this in certain... 00:25:54.48\00:25:56.92 we have a history of this myopia where we have focused on... 00:25:56.95\00:26:00.22 so we did the big public evangelistic meetings, 00:26:00.26\00:26:02.42 we realized we weren't baptizing the people we needed to 00:26:02.46\00:26:04.39 and I remember, this has been... 00:26:04.43\00:26:05.79 it was more emphasized, 00:26:05.83\00:26:07.96 it's been... probably 15... 20 years ago 00:26:08.00\00:26:09.70 where the big emphasis was "Pre-work" 00:26:09.73\00:26:11.30 we've got to do more pre-work, 00:26:11.33\00:26:12.67 we're not doing the pre-work and that's why... 00:26:12.70\00:26:14.04 we need to get Bible Workers and hire... 00:26:14.07\00:26:15.40 Greg: You'll get a bigger harvest. 00:26:15.44\00:26:16.77 We should do a big wave to get a bigger harvest 00:26:16.81\00:26:18.47 which is good except for... we focus on one thing 00:26:18.51\00:26:22.61 and then it was like, "Well, no, it's not the pre-work 00:26:22.64\00:26:25.78 we need to focus more on the felt-needs... 00:26:25.81\00:26:28.02 we need to get... meet people's needs... 00:26:28.05\00:26:29.62 Greg: Would that be like the cultivating of the seed... 00:26:29.65\00:26:30.99 Kameron: Preparing of the soil. 00:26:31.02\00:26:32.35 Greg: Preparing of the soil still... okay. 00:26:32.39\00:26:33.72 Okay, and... and all of that's true 00:26:33.76\00:26:35.92 but it can't exist independently 00:26:35.96\00:26:38.29 and so, independently, 00:26:38.33\00:26:39.66 "Okay, we're going to have this thing and this thing" 00:26:39.69\00:26:41.13 and then, "Oh it doesn't work" 00:26:41.16\00:26:42.50 and then we have the... the... for example, 00:26:42.53\00:26:44.50 you have the situations where people look at the results 00:26:44.53\00:26:47.84 and you hear a common gripe that people will have is, 00:26:47.87\00:26:51.14 "We did this evangelistic meeting, 00:26:51.17\00:26:52.51 we baptized all these people and two years later, 00:26:52.54\00:26:54.08 not one of them is... is here... " 00:26:54.14\00:26:55.61 Jill: They went out the back door. 00:26:55.64\00:26:56.98 They went out the back door. 00:26:57.01\00:26:58.35 And so we now have an emphasis on discipleship 00:26:58.38\00:27:00.28 which is yet another phase of the cycle 00:27:00.32\00:27:02.72 so we're focusing on one or the other. 00:27:02.75\00:27:05.12 The problem is... what happens is... 00:27:05.15\00:27:07.12 like again, you take it to the agricultural cycle 00:27:07.16\00:27:10.33 and the people will... they want to fault evangelism 00:27:10.36\00:27:12.59 and say, "Well, we're not going to do that again, 00:27:12.63\00:27:14.90 evangelism doesn't work. " 00:27:14.93\00:27:16.26 But that's like a farmer who goes and harvests his field, 00:27:16.30\00:27:18.03 he puts the grain in one of those big wagons 00:27:18.07\00:27:20.47 and then he goes in and he sits inside for six months 00:27:20.50\00:27:23.27 and then six months later he goes, 00:27:23.30\00:27:24.64 "I don't know what happened, all this grain rotted... 00:27:24.67\00:27:26.14 I mean this... I don't know this... 00:27:26.17\00:27:27.51 where's all the food that we're supposed to have from this thing 00:27:27.54\00:27:29.71 it doesn't work anymore. " 00:27:29.74\00:27:31.08 So, you can't blame evangelism, you've got to look at, 00:27:31.11\00:27:35.85 "Are we really understanding evangelism 00:27:35.88\00:27:38.42 the way the Scripture presents it 00:27:38.45\00:27:40.09 or have we just compartmentalizing it 00:27:40.16\00:27:41.69 the way... I don't know what's convenient or whatever 00:27:41.72\00:27:43.53 and leaving pieces out?" 00:27:43.56\00:27:45.13 Evangelism is a cycle and a lifestyle. 00:27:45.16\00:27:47.43 So then, I'm going to take it then that Emmanuel Institute 00:27:47.46\00:27:50.60 teaches the whole process. 00:27:50.63\00:27:51.97 Mark: Oh absolutely. 00:27:52.00\00:27:53.34 Greg: Yeah, and that's great. 00:27:53.37\00:27:54.70 Mark: And I'll say this, 00:27:54.74\00:27:56.07 we used to do these longer trainings and it's funny... 00:27:56.10\00:27:58.14 the longest training was like a four-month program 00:27:58.17\00:28:00.74 and there are still schools out there and they're good programs 00:28:00.78\00:28:04.55 and I remember, we go through four months 00:28:04.58\00:28:06.55 and we have students be like, 00:28:06.58\00:28:07.92 "Oh, if we just had another month, 00:28:07.95\00:28:09.28 we just had another two weeks" 00:28:09.32\00:28:10.65 and we would wrestle, 00:28:10.69\00:28:12.02 "Should we lengthen the program?" 00:28:12.05\00:28:13.39 But there's a statement in the book: Education 00:28:13.42\00:28:14.76 that has really resounded with me, 00:28:14.79\00:28:16.12 now we have really shifted our programs 00:28:16.16\00:28:18.53 to very shorter intensives, really targeted... 00:28:18.56\00:28:23.67 because not many church members can take four months off 00:28:23.70\00:28:26.43 and we want to impact the local churches 00:28:26.47\00:28:29.34 at the Lay level 00:28:29.37\00:28:31.64 but we would have students want this longer period of time 00:28:31.67\00:28:34.34 and there's a statement in the book, "Education" 00:28:34.38\00:28:36.85 it says, "It is in the water not on land 00:28:36.88\00:28:38.81 that men learn to swim. " 00:28:38.85\00:28:40.18 Jill: I like that. 00:28:40.22\00:28:41.55 And there's only so much you can learn in a classroom, 00:28:41.58\00:28:43.79 now, in our classroom, we have... 00:28:43.82\00:28:45.15 we have them going out... we do practical labor 00:28:45.19\00:28:47.62 but all of that aside, a person will never learn 00:28:47.66\00:28:50.19 how to be an effective soul winner 00:28:50.23\00:28:51.76 until they take the Lord at His word 00:28:51.79\00:28:53.33 and they go out and they say, "Okay, Lord, I'm going to be... 00:28:53.36\00:28:55.30 I'm going to witness for you" so you promise... 00:28:55.36\00:28:56.70 what did Jesus say? 00:28:56.73\00:28:58.07 "The Holy Spirit will come upon you 00:28:58.10\00:28:59.47 and you will be witnesses unto me. " 00:28:59.53\00:29:01.07 Do we believe that? 00:29:01.10\00:29:02.77 And we receive the Spirit, we receive the Lord, right 00:29:02.80\00:29:04.91 and so, let's go out in faith 00:29:04.94\00:29:06.34 and the Lord will teach you and it's a process of becoming 00:29:06.37\00:29:09.74 it doesn't happen overnight, 00:29:09.78\00:29:11.28 I can't tell you how many times I have put my foot in my mouth, 00:29:11.31\00:29:14.42 said the wrong thing... but that's how the Lord teaches us 00:29:14.45\00:29:17.09 and somebody said once that the... 00:29:17.15\00:29:19.59 the biggest problem new soul winners make 00:29:19.62\00:29:21.82 is not making enough mistakes. 00:29:21.86\00:29:23.19 The biggest mistake that new soul winners make 00:29:23.22\00:29:24.99 is not making enough mistakes. 00:29:25.03\00:29:26.36 We're afraid we're going to mess it up, 00:29:26.39\00:29:28.53 the Lord knows ahead of time when... 00:29:28.56\00:29:30.87 Yes, you're afraid of doing anything 00:29:30.90\00:29:32.23 because you do not want to mess up. 00:29:32.27\00:29:33.60 And oftentimes you'll see this almost lethargy 00:29:33.64\00:29:35.87 or apathy at our local church and we'll admit, 00:29:35.90\00:29:38.17 "Why is it so lifeless and everything like this?" 00:29:38.21\00:29:40.18 And we often think 00:29:40.21\00:29:41.54 that what we need is a fiery preacher to come in 00:29:41.58\00:29:43.58 and a Revival Series or something... really preach to us 00:29:43.61\00:29:45.88 Mrs. White has repeated counsel 00:29:45.91\00:29:48.38 where she talks about how our churches are dying 00:29:48.42\00:29:50.89 and the people want a Minister to come and preach to them 00:29:50.92\00:29:53.32 but that's not the answer 00:29:53.36\00:29:55.02 in fact, this is one of my favorite statements, 00:29:55.06\00:29:56.39 she says in: Testimonies for the Church, 00:29:56.42\00:29:57.83 Volume 6, 00:29:57.86\00:29:59.19 it's also found in: Christian Service, Chapter 5, 00:29:59.23\00:30:00.93 where she says, "It is evident 00:30:00.96\00:30:02.43 that all the sermons that have been preached 00:30:02.46\00:30:04.40 have not developed a large class of self-denying workers. " 00:30:04.43\00:30:06.90 She said, "Look around and listen 00:30:06.94\00:30:08.74 to all the sermons you want 00:30:08.77\00:30:10.31 but is it actually training people for effective service. " 00:30:10.34\00:30:12.97 She continues, "This subject is to be considered 00:30:13.01\00:30:15.28 as involving the most serious results... 00:30:15.31\00:30:17.01 our future for eternity is at stake. 00:30:17.05\00:30:18.71 The churches are withering up because 00:30:18.78\00:30:21.28 they have failed to use their talent in diffusing light. " 00:30:21.32\00:30:24.02 Jill: Hmmm... 00:30:24.09\00:30:25.42 The reason we have churches is not for a lack of preachers 00:30:25.45\00:30:28.02 and preaching... 00:30:28.06\00:30:29.56 it's for a lack of training and then working for the Lord 00:30:29.59\00:30:32.63 that there's a lifeless spirit in there 00:30:32.69\00:30:34.20 and so I believe it that the Holy Spirit is still... 00:30:34.26\00:30:36.30 still leading His church 00:30:36.33\00:30:38.43 and the Lord has a blessing to bestow 00:30:38.47\00:30:40.47 if we're willing to follow His counsel 00:30:40.54\00:30:42.27 and put to use the abilities 00:30:42.30\00:30:43.67 in a minimal... as they may be at that time 00:30:43.71\00:30:46.14 but develop them for God's glory 00:30:46.17\00:30:48.21 life will return. 00:30:48.24\00:30:49.58 Pastor Mark just mentioned about some of the training courses 00:30:49.61\00:30:52.48 which will make it in little more detail 00:30:52.51\00:30:54.08 we're going to have contact information here 00:30:54.12\00:30:56.12 in a few minutes so get your pen and paper ready 00:30:56.15\00:30:57.89 because if you're interested in attending... 00:30:57.92\00:30:59.59 I know there's a lot of information on your website, 00:30:59.62\00:31:01.26 maybe give that quickly 00:31:01.29\00:31:02.62 so people could start to look that up 00:31:02.66\00:31:03.99 because that's where the most recent, 00:31:04.03\00:31:05.36 up-to-date information is at 00:31:05.39\00:31:06.73 then we'll proceed on, what's the website? 00:31:06.76\00:31:08.10 Yeah, the website it: www. Emmanuel 00:31:08.13\00:31:10.47 I'm an old guy, now it anymore... 00:31:10.50\00:31:13.10 http:slash slash... 00:31:13.13\00:31:15.64 www. Emmanuellnstitute 00:31:15.67\00:31:18.17 Emmanuel 00:31:18.21\00:31:19.97 there are a lot of ways to spell Emmanuel 00:31:20.01\00:31:21.81 Emmanuellnstitute. org 00:31:21.84\00:31:25.38 Okay, and you'll find the most up-to-date information there 00:31:25.41\00:31:29.48 some of your training courses and classes and the cost 00:31:29.55\00:31:31.82 and that sort of thing, that's exciting isn't it? 00:31:31.85\00:31:33.25 It is very exciting... to me to think of evangelism as a cycle, 00:31:33.29\00:31:37.03 I love that agricultural process 00:31:37.06\00:31:40.86 and to think of that because I can see in my own experience, 00:31:40.90\00:31:43.87 how I might have focused on one aspect... the harvest 00:31:43.90\00:31:47.10 or you focus on... maybe planting 00:31:47.14\00:31:48.74 and you get stuck in the planting... 00:31:48.77\00:31:50.31 and I love that concept of the entire cycle 00:31:50.34\00:31:53.71 and that Evangelism is to be a lifestyle 00:31:53.74\00:31:57.08 so, that's incredible 00:31:57.11\00:31:58.51 but as we think about it, 00:31:58.55\00:31:59.88 method is not the only thing that's important, 00:31:59.91\00:32:01.78 the message is important so talk to us about the message. 00:32:01.82\00:32:04.99 Well, it's interesting 00:32:05.05\00:32:07.36 of course, as Seventh-day Adventists 00:32:07.39\00:32:09.52 you get Three Angels Broadcasting 00:32:09.56\00:32:11.59 we see, in fact... you were talking about that 00:32:11.63\00:32:14.46 before I go into it about Matthew 24. 00:32:14.50\00:32:16.16 Do you mind if I give a very brief little Bible Study? 00:32:16.20\00:32:18.63 Greg: Please. Jill: Please. 00:32:18.67\00:32:20.20 If you turn your Bibles, in Matthew chapter 24, 00:32:20.24\00:32:21.90 this is a passage that not just Seventh-day Adventists 00:32:21.97\00:32:24.77 but all Christians are familiar with, 00:32:24.81\00:32:26.14 in Matthew Chapter 24, Jesus is talking about 00:32:26.17\00:32:28.58 the signs of the end 00:32:28.61\00:32:30.25 and the approach of the coming of Jesus 00:32:30.28\00:32:32.41 and He says some pretty stark things 00:32:32.45\00:32:34.48 about wars and rumors of wars and all of that... 00:32:34.52\00:32:36.58 you'll find that in verses 6, 7 and 8 there 00:32:36.62\00:32:38.25 and then it says in verse 9, 00:32:38.29\00:32:39.89 "They'll deliver you up to tribulation and kill you" 00:32:39.95\00:32:41.62 so it is a pretty bleak outlook, right? 00:32:41.66\00:32:43.66 But if you go down to verse 13, it says, 00:32:43.69\00:32:45.63 "But he who endures to the end, shall be saved. " 00:32:45.66\00:32:48.50 so, clearly the Lord saw that no matter how tough... 00:32:48.53\00:32:51.33 there will be those who endure to the end, 00:32:51.37\00:32:53.30 there will be a remnant who will be there 00:32:53.34\00:32:55.84 and, verse 14, "this gospel of the kingdom 00:32:55.87\00:32:58.24 will be preached in all the world, 00:32:58.27\00:32:59.74 as a witness to all nations and then the end will come. " 00:32:59.77\00:33:02.18 Greg: Hmmm... hmmm... 00:33:02.21\00:33:03.55 So, as He gives this overview... the synopsis of end-time events, 00:33:03.58\00:33:05.88 that concludes where there's going to be a group 00:33:05.91\00:33:07.68 who endures to the end and they will be saved 00:33:07.72\00:33:09.18 and through them the gospel will be given to the whole world 00:33:09.22\00:33:11.62 and the result: then the end will come... 00:33:11.65\00:33:13.62 now go to Revelation chapter 14, 00:33:13.66\00:33:15.69 in Revelation chapter 14 which is where 00:33:15.72\00:33:18.26 Three Angels Broadcasting Network... 00:33:18.29\00:33:20.76 it's their mission too... 00:33:20.80\00:33:22.36 the entire chapter is simply 00:33:22.40\00:33:26.30 an expounding on 00:33:26.33\00:33:28.20 Matthew 24 verses 13 and 14 00:33:28.24\00:33:30.31 those who endure to the end will be saved... 00:33:30.34\00:33:31.94 the gospel goes to the world... 00:33:31.97\00:33:33.31 and then Jesus returns 00:33:33.34\00:33:34.68 because in verses 1 through 5, 00:33:34.71\00:33:36.04 it describes the character of those remnant people... 00:33:36.08\00:33:39.05 the messengers, right? 00:33:39.11\00:33:40.92 And then, starting in verse 6 00:33:40.95\00:33:42.85 you find the three angels' messages 00:33:42.88\00:33:45.09 and notice what it says in verse 6: 00:33:45.12\00:33:47.26 "Then I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven, 00:33:47.29\00:33:49.29 having the... " what? the everlasting gospel 00:33:49.32\00:33:51.93 to do what with it? "To preach... " 00:33:51.96\00:33:53.90 To whom? 00:33:53.93\00:33:55.26 "To those who dwell on the earth... 00:33:55.30\00:33:56.63 to every nation, tribe, tongue, and people... " 00:33:56.67\00:33:58.23 it's exactly what Jesus said would happen, right, 00:33:58.27\00:34:00.00 and then it adds in verse 7, "saying with a loud voice" 00:34:00.04\00:34:02.90 so what he's saying here is that gospel message 00:34:02.94\00:34:05.24 that would go to the world 00:34:05.27\00:34:06.71 and that's when you get into 00:34:06.74\00:34:08.08 those three angels' messages, right? 00:34:08.11\00:34:09.44 "Fear God... give glory to Him... 00:34:09.48\00:34:10.81 for the hour of His judgment has come" 00:34:10.85\00:34:12.31 notice there there's a tie... 00:34:12.35\00:34:14.08 the gospel includes the message about the judgment 00:34:14.12\00:34:16.55 it's still the gospel 00:34:16.58\00:34:17.92 right, and he goes on talking about 00:34:17.95\00:34:20.02 "worship Him who made the heaven and the earth, 00:34:20.06\00:34:21.46 the sea and the springs of water. " 00:34:21.49\00:34:22.82 Which is allusion to the Fourth Commandment 00:34:22.86\00:34:24.39 about the seventh-day Sabbath 00:34:24.43\00:34:25.76 then, verse 8, the fall of Babylon is talked about 00:34:25.79\00:34:28.66 which is those false doctrines 00:34:28.70\00:34:30.40 that made all the world wander after the beast 00:34:30.47\00:34:32.30 and then, finally, the warning against the Mark of the Beast 00:34:32.33\00:34:34.70 in verses 9 through 11 00:34:34.74\00:34:36.30 and it says in verse 12, 00:34:36.34\00:34:37.81 "Here is the patience of the saints; 00:34:37.84\00:34:39.24 here are those who keep the commandments of God 00:34:39.27\00:34:41.54 and have the faith of Jesus. " 00:34:41.58\00:34:42.91 That remnant who endure to the end will be saved 00:34:42.94\00:34:45.41 and what's the very next thing we see? 00:34:45.48\00:34:47.18 Verse 14... "Then I looked, and behold, a white cloud, 00:34:47.22\00:34:49.48 and on the cloud sat One like the Son of Man, 00:34:49.52\00:34:51.82 having on His head a golden crown, 00:34:51.85\00:34:53.19 and in His hand a sharp sickle. " 00:34:53.22\00:34:54.56 What is that a reference to? 00:34:54.59\00:34:55.92 It's this return of Jesus and the second coming. 00:34:55.96\00:34:57.76 So, Revelation chapter 14 00:34:57.79\00:34:59.86 which is where the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:34:59.89\00:35:01.46 and again Three Angels Broadcasting Network 00:35:01.50\00:35:03.06 gets its Mission Statement from 00:35:03.10\00:35:04.73 is simply the giving of the gospel to the world 00:35:04.77\00:35:09.04 in those last days 00:35:09.10\00:35:10.44 so as Seventh-day Adventists, 00:35:10.47\00:35:11.81 of course, we are to give the gospel to the world 00:35:11.84\00:35:13.41 but it includes that judgment-hour message, 00:35:13.44\00:35:16.11 that call to faithfulness to the commandments of God 00:35:16.14\00:35:18.15 and the faith of Jesus 00:35:18.21\00:35:19.55 and the other truths that have been so overlooked 00:35:19.58\00:35:22.78 and distorted by this other power 00:35:22.82\00:35:24.85 and so, the message we have to give is 00:35:24.89\00:35:27.59 not just a simple message 00:35:27.66\00:35:29.62 but it's a pointed, timely message 00:35:29.69\00:35:32.29 it's not just truth... 00:35:32.33\00:35:33.66 it's Present Truth... it's here for now. 00:35:33.70\00:35:35.86 Well, and another thing about... about that is, 00:35:35.93\00:35:38.43 when you take the word "gospel" 00:35:38.47\00:35:39.80 and the word "gospel" literally means "good news" 00:35:39.83\00:35:42.87 the one thing that's consistent in a definition of news is... 00:35:42.90\00:35:46.94 news is not something that's kept quiet, 00:35:46.98\00:35:48.51 news is... news is proclaimed 00:35:48.54\00:35:50.35 and so, the whole idea here is, 00:35:50.38\00:35:51.95 this is a message that's proclaimed 00:35:51.98\00:35:53.52 and in the context of this, 00:35:53.55\00:35:55.32 you know, in Revelation 14:12, 00:35:55.35\00:35:57.09 "here are they that keep the commandments of God 00:35:57.12\00:35:58.75 and the faith of Jesus" 00:35:58.79\00:36:00.12 this is something that is really important to understand 00:36:00.16\00:36:04.73 this whole "commandments-of-God" thing... 00:36:04.79\00:36:07.46 you know, there are a lot of believers 00:36:07.50\00:36:10.13 who have learned that... have been taught that 00:36:10.17\00:36:12.57 the commandments of God have been done away with 00:36:12.60\00:36:14.97 at the cross... or what have you... 00:36:15.00\00:36:17.04 and they don't process this through 00:36:17.07\00:36:19.47 that the commandments of God... 00:36:19.51\00:36:21.38 the Bible says it's sin... 00:36:21.41\00:36:23.28 the gospel is a divine remedy for sin, okay, 00:36:23.31\00:36:26.68 sin, according to the Bible is transgression of the Law of God 00:36:26.72\00:36:31.05 the breaking the commandments of God... 00:36:31.09\00:36:32.42 the Apostle Paul says, "I would not have known sin 00:36:32.45\00:36:34.56 if I didn't know the Law" in Romans 7 00:36:34.59\00:36:36.59 The Bible says, "Where there is no law, 00:36:36.62\00:36:38.46 there is no transgression" Romans chapter 4 00:36:38.49\00:36:41.96 and so, the Law of God is what defines sin 00:36:42.00\00:36:45.37 which is this disease that the gospel is a remedy of 00:36:45.40\00:36:49.87 but if you take the law away from the picture, 00:36:49.90\00:36:51.71 if the law is done away with... 00:36:51.74\00:36:53.27 where there is no law, there is no transgression, 00:36:53.31\00:36:55.54 there is no more sickness 00:36:55.58\00:36:56.95 and now the gospel becomes 00:36:56.98\00:36:58.31 a cure for a disease that doesn't exist 00:36:58.35\00:37:00.05 and then you have to ask yourself, 00:37:00.08\00:37:01.85 "Then what is this whole thing about?" 00:37:01.88\00:37:03.99 And it confuses the character of God 00:37:04.02\00:37:06.12 it can't do anything else... 00:37:06.15\00:37:08.49 if there's no remedy... there's no disease to be remedied, 00:37:08.52\00:37:11.79 then what is the gospel about? 00:37:11.83\00:37:13.16 So, the message that we proclaim these three angels... 00:37:13.19\00:37:17.70 puts this gospel in a setting that brings to view 00:37:17.73\00:37:20.84 the character of God in a way that nothing else can, 00:37:20.87\00:37:24.67 otherwise, it makes Him look arbitrary and mysterious 00:37:24.71\00:37:28.48 and so this... the message is 00:37:28.51\00:37:31.18 always going to be core and central. 00:37:31.21\00:37:33.35 You know, we were training... it's interesting 00:37:33.38\00:37:35.15 and you talked about, Greg, 00:37:35.18\00:37:36.79 how people get nervous about sharing their faith 00:37:36.82\00:37:38.85 and what have you 00:37:38.89\00:37:40.22 but here's something that I... I use this example sometimes 00:37:40.26\00:37:43.63 I have never yet held a training class 00:37:43.66\00:37:47.33 for guys to tell them to tell their buddies 00:37:47.40\00:37:51.27 how their team beat their buddy's team in the Super Bowl. 00:37:51.30\00:37:55.50 In other words, it's like, "You know, Pastor, I... 00:37:55.54\00:37:58.67 my team just totally wiped out my friend's team in the big game 00:37:58.71\00:38:01.64 how can I share that with them?" 00:38:01.68\00:38:03.68 Because... and the point isn't that we don't... 00:38:03.71\00:38:08.28 yeah, we don't naturally get nervous about some things 00:38:08.32\00:38:10.25 but when you're excited about the message... it drives you 00:38:10.29\00:38:15.56 and one thing I've learned in our training 00:38:15.59\00:38:18.26 is one of the most effective things we do 00:38:18.29\00:38:20.60 as a part of our training 00:38:20.63\00:38:21.96 is go through our beliefs from Scripture 00:38:22.00\00:38:24.50 where people... 00:38:24.53\00:38:26.03 a lot of people grow up in the church they grew up in 00:38:26.07\00:38:28.07 and they don't know from Scripture why they believe 00:38:28.10\00:38:29.84 what they believe 00:38:29.87\00:38:31.21 and boy! when they find out 00:38:31.24\00:38:32.57 you... you... you can hardly hold them back, 00:38:32.61\00:38:34.48 I mean, there's a little bit of steering 00:38:34.51\00:38:36.85 like a sail on a boat but they're moving... 00:38:36.88\00:38:39.18 it's hard to move a boat with a sail 00:38:39.21\00:38:40.55 when the boat isn't going anywhere, right, 00:38:40.62\00:38:42.38 and so, when people get excited about the message, 00:38:42.42\00:38:44.85 the message is always what's going to drive evangelism. 00:38:44.89\00:38:47.32 Okay, so someone at home is saying, 00:38:47.36\00:38:48.69 "You know what, I'm not excited about the message 00:38:48.72\00:38:50.16 how do I get excited about the message? 00:38:50.19\00:38:52.76 What would you say to them at home?" 00:38:52.79\00:38:54.90 Come to Emmanuel... 00:38:54.93\00:38:56.83 Come to Emmanuel, amen. 00:38:56.87\00:38:58.50 Watch 3ABN... I mean, the reality is, 00:38:58.53\00:39:01.24 I've known people that tell me, 00:39:01.27\00:39:03.10 "Pastor, I just... I don't know how to give a Bible Study" 00:39:03.14\00:39:05.24 I say, "How long have you been in the church?" 00:39:05.27\00:39:06.61 "10 years... 20 years... 30 years... " 00:39:06.64\00:39:09.91 I said, "Look, take a printed lesson... 00:39:09.94\00:39:12.18 get some friends on a Sabbath afternoon 00:39:12.21\00:39:14.35 and say, 'Hey, let's just practice going over this. '" 00:39:14.38\00:39:17.49 Greg: Wow! 00:39:17.52\00:39:18.85 The reality is, a lot of people aren't excited 00:39:18.89\00:39:20.76 because they aren't studying it personally for themselves. 00:39:20.79\00:39:23.29 You have to own it, you know. 00:39:23.32\00:39:24.99 You can hear it... but hearing... 00:39:25.03\00:39:26.66 this is why all the sermons preached don't do it, 00:39:26.70\00:39:28.56 there's something different about you... 00:39:28.60\00:39:30.70 you know, so even... you watch 3ABN or what have you 00:39:30.73\00:39:33.80 but if you're taking it and you're taking notes 00:39:33.84\00:39:35.84 and you're applying it and you're personalizing it, 00:39:35.87\00:39:38.21 that's what gets you excited about the message. 00:39:38.24\00:39:40.54 Well, listen to this, 00:39:40.58\00:39:41.91 Review and Herald, October 22, 1889 00:39:41.94\00:39:44.28 one of my favorite statements, I say that about every statement 00:39:44.31\00:39:46.98 this is one of the best okay. 00:39:47.02\00:39:48.72 "If church members are educated 00:39:48.78\00:39:51.42 to be silent and useless members 00:39:51.45\00:39:53.86 instead of benefiting the church, 00:39:53.89\00:39:56.22 they will be a hindrance to its advancement and growth, 00:39:56.26\00:39:58.29 if they're educated to lean upon the minister, 00:39:58.33\00:40:00.53 they will become only inefficient 00:40:00.56\00:40:01.90 and demoralized members 00:40:01.93\00:40:03.26 and the church will be powerless 00:40:03.30\00:40:04.80 instead of active and efficient. " 00:40:04.83\00:40:06.53 Now, that sounds pretty gloomy 00:40:06.57\00:40:08.20 but think about what it's predicated on, 00:40:08.24\00:40:10.17 "if the church members are educated 00:40:10.21\00:40:11.97 to be silent and useless members... " 00:40:12.01\00:40:13.71 that implies... they didn't come that way, 00:40:13.74\00:40:16.31 everyone... someone who just became a Seventh-day Adventist 00:40:16.34\00:40:19.35 who just came to an Evangelistic Series... 00:40:19.38\00:40:21.08 who just had a Bible Study... 00:40:21.12\00:40:22.45 they can't stop talking, 00:40:22.48\00:40:24.09 they'll go to the water cooler 00:40:24.12\00:40:25.45 and the other people may be talking about sports 00:40:25.49\00:40:26.82 and they're like, "We're talking about the Mark of the Beast 00:40:26.86\00:40:28.42 brother, and the Sabbath" they'll just go on and on... 00:40:28.49\00:40:30.63 now, praise the Lord, you might want to educate them 00:40:30.66\00:40:32.43 how to be more effective in their witness, right, 00:40:32.46\00:40:34.23 six weeks... they're on fire... 00:40:34.26\00:40:37.03 six months... I mean, there's still a flame, 00:40:37.07\00:40:39.60 it might... six years... if they're still here at all... 00:40:39.63\00:40:42.70 Greg: Hmmm... Jill: Yeah. 00:40:42.74\00:40:44.21 I hate to say it but listen, you're making me think of... 00:40:44.24\00:40:46.61 when I first came in the church... 00:40:46.64\00:40:47.98 and as... you know, as I've taught people, 00:40:48.01\00:40:49.61 people are like, they resound with this story 00:40:49.64\00:40:52.51 that... I remember coming to church 00:40:52.55\00:40:54.22 and I was just so excited about sharing 00:40:54.25\00:40:55.92 and I didn't know a whole lot but I just... 00:40:55.95\00:40:57.55 I felt... I wanted to share it... 00:40:57.59\00:40:58.99 and I remember people saying, "Oh, you're just new... 00:40:59.02\00:41:01.46 don't worry, you'll be like us after a while" 00:41:01.49\00:41:06.59 I was like, "Aaaah... " 00:41:06.63\00:41:08.06 and that's what happens 00:41:08.10\00:41:09.46 we can acclimate people sometimes 00:41:09.50\00:41:12.93 to a... "that's the Pastor's job and talent. " 00:41:12.97\00:41:16.17 And then that statement in which she says, 00:41:16.20\00:41:17.54 "if church members are educated... " 00:41:17.57\00:41:19.17 and I've never seen a church in my whole experience 00:41:19.24\00:41:21.64 as a Seventh-day Adventist which is from birth... 00:41:21.68\00:41:23.65 hold a: How to be a silent and ineffective church member course 00:41:23.68\00:41:27.95 but sometimes the education occurs. 00:41:27.98\00:41:30.19 I used to think of it as a... 00:41:30.22\00:41:31.55 Mrs. White talked about, "Every church should be a 00:41:31.59\00:41:33.56 Training School for Christian workers" 00:41:33.62\00:41:34.96 I used to think, "You know... " 00:41:34.99\00:41:36.32 and I used to think it was a powerful line to say, 00:41:36.36\00:41:38.29 "Every church should be a training center" 00:41:38.33\00:41:39.66 and then it dawned on me, 00:41:39.69\00:41:41.03 "Every church already is a training center" 00:41:41.06\00:41:42.66 we are constantly training members, 00:41:42.70\00:41:46.13 either to be effective or ineffective soul winners 00:41:46.20\00:41:49.60 but the training is ongoing, 00:41:49.64\00:41:50.97 it doesn't have to be a formal course, 00:41:51.01\00:41:52.37 you just learn it by osmosis to being a part of it. 00:41:52.41\00:41:55.58 Okay, so our time is going by quickly, 00:41:55.61\00:41:57.21 so, okay, as we've talked about the relevancy of evangelism 00:41:57.25\00:42:00.18 and the message versus the method and stuff 00:42:00.45\00:42:02.42 so, tell me a little bit about Emmanuel Institute then, 00:42:02.45\00:42:04.82 how am I going to learn the stuff there, 00:42:04.85\00:42:06.19 tell me a little about it as you have to say, 00:42:06.22\00:42:08.19 "Man, I want to go there and experience the courses. " 00:42:08.22\00:42:10.43 Well, as I said, I mean, you get online 00:42:10.46\00:42:11.86 and we have different... we have several different courses 00:42:11.89\00:42:14.36 and we focus on different things, 00:42:14.40\00:42:15.76 like, for example, last year we had a 00:42:15.83\00:42:17.23 Conference-wide Evangelism Training 00:42:17.27\00:42:18.60 and we did a... we did a Speaker training... 00:42:18.63\00:42:21.07 Greg: So you only did it for the Conference? 00:42:21.10\00:42:22.70 No, no... no... anybody can sign up and come to the Programs 00:42:22.74\00:42:26.91 that are on our site 00:42:26.94\00:42:28.71 we've had people from all over the place, 00:42:28.74\00:42:30.28 literally, all over the world. 00:42:30.35\00:42:31.75 Greg: Wow! 00:42:31.78\00:42:33.11 But it's... you know... you got to... 00:42:33.15\00:42:36.18 each training is specific to a certain thing 00:42:36.22\00:42:38.49 so we did it... like the "Speaker Training" 00:42:38.52\00:42:40.72 was specially geared to a person 00:42:40.76\00:42:42.62 who wanted to be a lay preacher in an evangelistic series, 00:42:42.66\00:42:45.16 but our typical programs are usually going over the... 00:42:45.19\00:42:47.66 clearing throat... pardon me... 00:42:47.70\00:42:49.60 Greg: Like the details about the course. 00:42:49.66\00:42:51.43 Kameron: Well, we have the Bible Study Docs 00:42:51.47\00:42:53.20 we'll cover it... like you were saying, 00:42:53.23\00:42:54.90 what kind of... lights that fire and literally 00:42:54.94\00:42:56.71 there is less that gets people excited 00:42:56.74\00:42:59.01 than knowing what they believe 00:42:59.07\00:43:00.41 and starting to share what they believe. 00:43:00.44\00:43:01.78 So, the Bible Docs Program is a huge part of that 00:43:01.81\00:43:04.05 and then that training of that cycle of evangelism, 00:43:04.08\00:43:06.48 getting that mentality... walking through each phase 00:43:06.51\00:43:08.82 of where Lay people could be involved 00:43:08.85\00:43:10.72 in every one of those phases, 00:43:10.75\00:43:12.09 like, teaching them how to... 00:43:12.12\00:43:13.46 like, we're talking about nuts and bolts, 00:43:13.49\00:43:15.96 we're talking about literally how to a conversation... 00:43:16.02\00:43:17.99 there are... and there are people 00:43:18.03\00:43:19.56 who are petrified to talk to people, 00:43:19.59\00:43:21.23 not just about spiritual things... about anything. 00:43:21.26\00:43:22.90 Jill: Some people are just shy. 00:43:22.96\00:43:24.63 And they're just shy how do you... 00:43:24.67\00:43:26.00 how do you break through? 00:43:26.03\00:43:27.37 So you give them the practical insights, 00:43:27.40\00:43:28.74 here's how to start up a conversation 00:43:28.77\00:43:30.11 and here's how to transition it to a spiritual conversation... 00:43:30.14\00:43:32.24 you kind of test the soil a little bit 00:43:32.27\00:43:33.88 and see if there's an interest and... 00:43:33.94\00:43:35.48 if there is an interest, what should I do then 00:43:35.51\00:43:37.28 and how can I get a Bible-Study interest 00:43:37.31\00:43:39.58 how do I maintain it? 00:43:39.61\00:43:40.95 So all those practical steps of... "Now I've got this message 00:43:40.98\00:43:44.25 I want to be a messenger, how do I go about doing that?" 00:43:44.29\00:43:47.06 Emmanuel Institute does both of those 00:43:47.12\00:43:49.32 and our hope is beyond training the individual members 00:43:49.36\00:43:54.00 that through them we'll help train the churches 00:43:54.03\00:43:56.73 that they're a part of 00:43:56.77\00:43:58.10 to become Training-Center Churches 00:43:58.13\00:43:59.93 because I have been in a church where they've... 00:43:59.97\00:44:02.00 we've sent people to the Emmanuel Institute 00:44:02.04\00:44:03.71 and the difference before they went... and after they went 00:44:03.74\00:44:06.21 was palpable... you could see it in the church, 00:44:06.24\00:44:08.24 there was a spirit of, "Let's get out and win souls" 00:44:08.28\00:44:11.18 and they're not waiting on the Pastor to... like, 00:44:11.21\00:44:14.08 "All right, now we're about to do some evangelism or whatever" 00:44:14.12\00:44:16.38 they're not waiting for a Conference initiative, 00:44:16.42\00:44:18.02 they have it within themselves 00:44:18.05\00:44:20.02 and that, I think, is the ultimate ideals to have, 00:44:20.06\00:44:23.32 every member have that drive inside of them 00:44:23.36\00:44:25.66 and not just the... not just the desire for it, 00:44:25.69\00:44:28.10 but the practical training to put it into practice, 00:44:28.13\00:44:30.53 so that they can go into their local churches 00:44:30.57\00:44:32.83 and we can see less dependency on the Pastor 00:44:32.87\00:44:35.20 and more dependency on Christ and His mission 00:44:35.27\00:44:37.44 through every member. 00:44:37.47\00:44:39.04 Yeah, I have to add that that when... when... 00:44:39.07\00:44:42.21 one of the things people fail to keep in mind 00:44:42.24\00:44:44.61 when they're witnessing and you even mentioned, 00:44:44.65\00:44:46.95 I think one of the most common challenges people have is, 00:44:46.98\00:44:49.38 "How do I make the transition... I know how to be a friend, 00:44:49.42\00:44:51.75 how do I get into spiritual things?" 00:44:51.79\00:44:54.42 And one thing that we too often forget 00:44:54.46\00:44:57.03 is that the success in that area 00:44:57.06\00:44:59.86 is dependent wholly upon the Spirit of God, 00:44:59.89\00:45:02.63 a person who is totally disinterested today 00:45:02.66\00:45:05.33 may be totally interested tomorrow. 00:45:05.37\00:45:06.87 When I came into my conversion experience, 00:45:06.90\00:45:09.30 I went from a disinterested person through life... 00:45:09.37\00:45:11.44 through an event the Lord took me through in my life 00:45:11.47\00:45:14.88 He totally opened me up to be interested in spiritual things 00:45:14.91\00:45:18.45 and so, as Christians, sometimes we get all discouraged 00:45:18.48\00:45:21.15 because I asked my friend 00:45:21.18\00:45:22.52 or I'm trying to talk to my co-worker about spiritual things 00:45:22.55\00:45:24.55 they're not interested, 00:45:24.62\00:45:26.09 instead of realizing that they're not interested today... 00:45:26.12\00:45:27.92 Greg: Oooh, that's good. 00:45:27.96\00:45:29.56 And they may... and we get the idea 00:45:29.59\00:45:31.06 that we've got to be real preaching... 00:45:31.09\00:45:32.49 I'm doing this kind of... there's more detail to this 00:45:32.53\00:45:34.90 but it really is as simple as bringing up something spiritual 00:45:34.93\00:45:38.87 to see if that person is open to spiritual things. 00:45:38.90\00:45:41.50 I go to my friend at the water cooler, 00:45:41.54\00:45:42.87 we're talking about the weather, 00:45:42.90\00:45:44.24 he says, "Man, these storms are terrible" 00:45:44.27\00:45:45.61 I say some things like, 00:45:45.64\00:45:46.98 "You know, my Pastor just was talking about that... 00:45:47.01\00:45:49.74 something in Bible prophecy about that 00:45:49.78\00:45:51.25 in our Prayer Meeting this week. " 00:45:51.28\00:45:52.65 As simple as that, I'm not preaching to him 00:45:52.68\00:45:54.95 and then, how does he respond? 00:45:54.98\00:45:56.75 He's either going to say, 00:45:56.79\00:45:58.39 "You talk about that stuff in your church?" and open up 00:45:58.42\00:46:01.59 or he's going to be like, "You know what? 00:46:01.62\00:46:02.96 I got to get back to my desk. " 00:46:02.99\00:46:04.73 Okay, but just the little... 00:46:04.76\00:46:06.59 we call that, "throwing out test seeds" 00:46:06.63\00:46:09.10 just say anything spiritual related to church... prayer... 00:46:09.13\00:46:12.03 Bible Study... anything... 00:46:12.07\00:46:13.40 and see how they respond. 00:46:13.44\00:46:14.77 A month later... he might say, 00:46:14.80\00:46:16.14 "You know a month ago, you mentioned about... 00:46:16.17\00:46:17.91 you know, hey, can you tell me a little more about that?" 00:46:17.97\00:46:19.64 Mark: It happens all the time. Greg: Does it really? 00:46:19.67\00:46:21.04 And that's why we... 00:46:21.08\00:46:22.41 the Spirit of God is always working on hearts 00:46:22.44\00:46:24.45 and I've had churches, they say, 00:46:24.48\00:46:26.41 "Oh we've already knocked on doors in our... 00:46:26.45\00:46:27.88 in our neighborhood 00:46:27.95\00:46:29.28 you know, we did that six months ago. " 00:46:29.32\00:46:30.65 In six months... everything can change... 00:46:30.69\00:46:32.02 Jill: Oh yeah. 00:46:32.05\00:46:33.39 You're looking for the people, 00:46:33.42\00:46:34.76 you're not going to get everybody every time, 00:46:34.79\00:46:36.16 you're going to get the people 00:46:36.22\00:46:37.66 the Spirit of God has been able to grab the attention of 00:46:37.69\00:46:40.33 and that's happening constantly 00:46:40.36\00:46:41.70 and if we just go forward with confidence... and you mentioned, 00:46:41.73\00:46:44.07 I think earlier we were talking about family members... 00:46:44.10\00:46:45.43 same way... family members can be the hardest people to reach 00:46:45.47\00:46:48.57 because they know you the way you were before 00:46:48.60\00:46:51.97 and they know your faults and everything... 00:46:52.01\00:46:54.78 but the Lord is still working and I tell you, 00:46:54.84\00:46:57.55 when people see you as spiritual 00:46:57.58\00:46:59.28 and they're not spiritual, especially in a family, 00:46:59.31\00:47:01.35 you're the last person they want to talk to. 00:47:01.38\00:47:03.12 Jill: It's intimidating. 00:47:03.18\00:47:04.52 It's intimidating... it's just, "I don't want to go there" 00:47:04.55\00:47:06.59 but when something happens and they need spiritual help 00:47:06.62\00:47:08.72 you know the first person they're going to go looking for? 00:47:08.76\00:47:10.83 And it will happen... so I tell people, 00:47:10.86\00:47:12.59 "Don't be afraid to be spiritual... 00:47:12.63\00:47:14.20 it may be a put off now, 00:47:14.23\00:47:15.56 like, people are getting put off by that 00:47:15.60\00:47:17.27 but the same people that are getting put off now, 00:47:17.30\00:47:19.80 they're going to be coming to you later 00:47:19.83\00:47:21.60 when the Spirit of God is able to reach through their heart" 00:47:21.64\00:47:24.44 and I'm... again, I've seen this happen time and again. 00:47:24.47\00:47:27.01 The Lord is always... in fact, one of my favorite statements 00:47:27.04\00:47:29.04 Ellen White makes in Evangelism 127 is, 00:47:29.08\00:47:31.71 "There's far more being done by the universe of heaven 00:47:31.75\00:47:34.22 than we have any idea... so that souls will be converted. " 00:47:34.28\00:47:37.19 Greg: Wow, praise the Lord, we have heaven on our side. 00:47:37.22\00:47:39.25 Mark: That's exactly right. 00:47:39.32\00:47:40.66 Kameron: Wow, it's absolutely true. 00:47:40.69\00:47:42.22 I'm so encouraged as I listen to this 00:47:42.26\00:47:43.89 just to see what God is doing in the Michigan Conference 00:47:43.93\00:47:47.13 but what God can do in each one of our hearts 00:47:47.16\00:47:49.20 you know, how He can transform our lives 00:47:49.23\00:47:51.37 and our churches, so, Pastor Kameron, 00:47:51.40\00:47:53.30 maybe this is a little more for you... 00:47:53.34\00:47:54.80 I know we're focusing on Emmanuel Institute 00:47:54.84\00:47:56.81 and what God is doing there in the training 00:47:56.84\00:47:58.77 but what training are you doing 00:47:58.81\00:48:00.64 throughout the Michigan Conference 00:48:00.68\00:48:02.44 or what resources 00:48:02.48\00:48:03.81 or what are you all involved in 00:48:03.85\00:48:05.41 for training churches for evangelism? 00:48:05.45\00:48:07.38 Well, to be clear, this is my second week on the job 00:48:07.42\00:48:09.58 so it's limited right now 00:48:09.62\00:48:11.32 no... but the Personal Ministries Department 00:48:11.35\00:48:13.29 has existed long before I was there 00:48:13.32\00:48:15.26 and they definitely see, 00:48:15.29\00:48:17.19 in partnership with the Emmanuel Institute 00:48:17.23\00:48:18.93 and other trainings in our Conferences 00:48:18.99\00:48:20.50 that training of Lay people is one of our primary goals, 00:48:20.53\00:48:23.77 that's... we want to make sure that that happens 00:48:23.83\00:48:25.37 and also providing resources for those different avenues 00:48:25.40\00:48:28.84 so, we think of the Discipleship Handbook 00:48:28.87\00:48:31.17 that was recently produced 00:48:31.21\00:48:32.54 starting in the Michigan Conference 00:48:32.57\00:48:34.18 and soon will be launched as a General Conference Resource. 00:48:34.21\00:48:36.44 Jill: And what is that about? 00:48:36.48\00:48:37.81 That is... about that very question 00:48:37.85\00:48:39.65 whenever you have that great harvest of souls 00:48:39.71\00:48:41.38 and then they... because that's how this happens oftentimes 00:48:41.42\00:48:43.99 so, you'll have a big event and new people will come in, 00:48:44.02\00:48:46.52 they're excited by the event itself 00:48:46.55\00:48:47.89 and the messages are stirring and convicting 00:48:47.92\00:48:49.46 and they give their hearts to the Lord 00:48:49.49\00:48:50.93 and the next week the banners come down... 00:48:50.99\00:48:52.36 the evangelist goes away and it's back to routine... 00:48:52.39\00:48:54.26 and their stage is different 00:48:54.30\00:48:55.76 and lo and behold, six months later or a year later 00:48:55.80\00:48:59.77 half of them are gone 00:48:59.80\00:49:01.14 and people will still say, 00:49:01.17\00:49:02.50 "Well, that's evidence that evangelism doesn't work.
