00:01 I want to spend my life
00:07 Mending broken people 00:12 I want to spend my life 00:18 Removing pain 00:23 Lord, let my words 00:29 Heal a heart that hurts 00:34 I want to spend my life 00:40 Mending broken people 00:45 I want to spend my life 00:51 Mending broken people 01:11 Hello and welcome to another 3ABN Today program. 01:14 My name is Jill Morikone and we are so excited 01:17 that you have taken time from your schedule 01:19 to join us here. 01:20 Now many times on the 3ABN Today program, 01:23 we feature wonderful guests with incredible testimonies 01:27 or ministries of what God is doing in and through them 01:31 and today is no exception. 01:32 We have a great friend of the ministry, Jean Boonstra. 01:36 She and her husband Shawn, 01:38 who is the speaker/director of Voice of Prophecy, 01:41 and they are an incredible ministry couple, 01:44 have ministered in many places all over the world, 01:47 and we are so privileged, Jean, to have you here 01:49 and welcome, thank you so much for coming. 01:51 Thank you. Oh, I am glad to be here, Jill. 01:53 Love to be with you. 01:54 So you are an associate speaker, 01:56 is that right? 01:57 Yes, that's correct. 01:59 And how long have you and your husband 02:00 been in Voice of Prophecy? 02:01 We started with Voice of Prophecy in 2013. 02:04 So it's been a couple of years now. 02:05 Okay, now when you started, I am trying to remember, 02:07 had you moved to Colorado or did the move to Colorado 02:10 for Voice of Prophecy take place 02:11 when you guys took the helm over? 02:13 It took place after Shawn became the speaker/director 02:16 for Voice of Prophecy. 02:18 The Adventist Media Center was closing 02:20 and so each of the ministries needed to look for a new home 02:23 and so Shawn and our manager Victor, 02:26 they looked at multiple locations 02:28 across the US and landed on Colorado 02:31 which I'm delighted that they did. 02:32 We are really enjoying being in Colorado. 02:34 Oh, that's wonderful. Beautiful scenery. 02:36 Oh, it is. It's gorgeous. 02:37 You can't beat that. Hard to beat. 02:39 Yes. That's right. 02:40 Absolutely. 02:41 Well, we want to get just a little bit 02:43 of Jean's story and she and her husband. 02:44 But the focus of this interview is actually about, 02:48 we could say a brand new, 02:49 but it's actually been in existence a little bit 02:51 but it's a radio program for children 02:54 called Discovery Mountain. 02:56 And I remember, Jean, maybe a year ago, 02:59 my sister calling me on the phone, 03:00 she lives in North Carolina and she said, 03:02 "Jill, have you ever heard of Discovery Mountain?" 03:04 And I was like, "I don't think so." 03:06 And she said, 03:07 "I love this program, and my boys." 03:09 I think she discovered it maybe when you were 03:11 three episodes in. 03:13 So it was season one, right at the beginning. 03:14 Wow. 03:15 And she said, "The boys love it." 03:17 My nephews are five, seven, nine and eleven. 03:20 Oh, okay. 03:22 Perfect age for this program. 03:23 Perfect age and they loved the radio program 03:25 and every week they are just glued to it to listen 03:27 and I said, "I got to check this out." 03:29 So we are going to talk about Discovery Mountain today. 03:31 What is Discovery Mountain in a nutshell? 03:34 And then we'll go back to some of 03:35 you and your husband's story. 03:36 Okay, sure. 03:38 Discovery Mountain, 03:39 we like to say it's our audio adventure series 03:40 for kids. 03:42 So it is a weekly half-hour program. 03:45 Voice of Prophecy creates 24 new episodes per year. 03:49 And in addition to that, 03:50 there is new content every week. 03:52 And so we know kids like, your nephews for example, 03:55 they get used to looking for something new 03:57 every Wednesday to listen to. 03:59 And so, when we don't have a full episode, 04:01 we have what we are calling our mini-adventure. 04:03 So a little bit of maybe behind the scenes 04:06 or an interview with a voice actor 04:07 but every single week there is new content. 04:10 Amen. 04:11 So the focus of our program today, 04:12 we are going to talk about Discovery Mountain 04:14 and what you have done with the seasons 04:17 and what is the purpose and the goal. 04:18 We are gonna get some behind the scenes look 04:20 into what takes place there with the production of it. 04:23 But let's talk about you and your husband, 04:25 tell me where you first met, how you first met? 04:26 Oh, wow. 04:28 That's a long story, 04:30 but I'll give you the highlights. 04:32 Neither Shawn or myself were raised 04:34 as Seventh-day Adventists and we met through my dad. 04:39 My dad at the time was working 04:41 for the ministry of advanced education 04:43 in British Columbia, Canada, and he had... 04:46 Part of his job was to have a youth advisory council 04:50 and one of the young fellows on that council and my dad, 04:52 they became friends in spite of the age difference 04:55 and this fellow's name was Choy 04:57 and Choy had a friend who is Shawn. 05:00 And one day, my dad brought the guys 05:02 over to our house, Shawn and I met 05:04 and we began dating after that. 05:08 Were you high school age? 05:09 I had just finished high school 05:11 and Shawn was in his third year of university. 05:13 Okay. 05:14 We started dating and became close to each other 05:18 and realized if we were going to get married, 05:20 we had to find a church 05:22 because we both have been raised in churches, 05:25 even though we weren't necessarily living that way 05:27 at that point in our lives. 05:29 And we thought, if we're gonna have kids one day, 05:31 we have to figure out where we gonna go to church. 05:33 And that began a journey and eventually, you know, 05:37 we ended up where we are today and it's... 05:41 Looking back on it, we have been married 05:42 more than 25 years now. 05:44 Oh, that's precious. 05:45 Amen. Yeah. 05:47 And so looking back, I really see 05:48 how when we were completely oblivious to God's hand 05:52 on our journey, God really was guiding us 05:54 and bringing us together and moving us in faith together 05:57 which is really special. 05:58 Amen, ain't that incredible when you know 06:00 God handpicks your spouse? 06:01 Oh, yeah. 06:02 And you can serve together in ministry 06:04 like the two of you do, that's wonderful. 06:05 Now you have two girls, tell us about them? 06:06 We do. We have two daughters. 06:08 Our oldest daughter Natalie 06:09 is studying at Southern Adventist University. 06:12 She is just loving it there. 06:13 She has kind of found her niche and we are thrilled. 06:16 And our youngest daughter is still in high school 06:18 at Campaign Academy, Naomi. 06:20 Natalie and Naomi. 06:21 Natalie and Naomi, that's wonderful. 06:23 Well, I know God has blessed you 06:25 with many gifts, gifts of speaking in ministry 06:28 and this program is incredible, 06:29 and I know it's reaching so many people. 06:31 So I am looking forward to hearing about that. 06:33 But first we have to go to our music. 06:35 Okay. 06:36 And before we do that, I ask Jean, 06:39 if there was a certain scripture 06:40 that she especially liked. 06:41 And this scripture is Proverbs 3:5, 6 06:44 and if you know it at home, please quote it with us. 06:47 This is an incredible scripture, 06:48 Proverbs 3:5, 6. 06:50 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, 06:52 and lean not on your own understanding. 06:56 In all your ways acknowledge Him, 06:58 and He shall direct your paths." 07:01 So no matter where you are today 07:04 in your own journey with Jesus, reach out by faith, 07:07 accept Him as your personal savior, 07:10 trust in Him and He will never let you go. 07:14 Our song right now is a piano song 07:16 by Sam Ocampo and I love his music Jean, 07:19 he is an incredibly gifted musician. 07:21 Greg and I have his CD in the car, 07:23 in the hard drive in the car, you know? 07:25 And we often listen to it. 07:26 It is so peaceful and restful. Beautiful. 07:28 And the song he will be doing for us 07:30 is "It Took A Miracle Medley." 12:34 Amen. Thank you so much Sam Ocampo. 12:36 What an incredible blessing, "It Took A Miracle," 12:39 and it took a miracle for God to bring salvation 12:43 to each one of us and we are talking today 12:46 with Jean Boonstra, she is an associate speaker 12:49 for The Voice of Prophecy and we were talking about 12:51 Discovery Mountain which is, we could say brand new, 12:54 but it started in 2017, I believe. 12:57 Yes. 12:58 And it's a program specifically targeted, 13:00 a radio program, for kids. 13:02 So tell us what is Discovery Mountain? 13:04 So Discovery Mountain is, we call it our audio adventure 13:08 series for kids. 13:09 There are 24 half-hour episodes every year 13:12 and new content every week of the year 13:16 and it's just a dramatized story 13:20 is the best way to describe it. 13:22 Amen. 13:24 So what is the mission of the program? 13:26 So the mission of Discovery Mountain 13:28 is at its core, at its simplest form 13:31 is really to help children and their families 13:34 to get to know Jesus. 13:36 To reach children families of any background, 13:39 whether they've attended church their entire lives 13:41 or never set foot in a church. 13:43 That's our goal is to introduce them to Jesus 13:45 and help them to grow that relationship with Him. 13:47 Amen. 13:48 And before we go any further 13:50 talking about Discovery Mountain, 13:51 I believe we have a video clip that you all have put together. 13:53 Yes. 13:54 And tell us about this video clip before we watch it. 13:56 Okay, well, this is great because it shows 13:58 a little bit of the visuals of what Discovery Mountain. 14:00 It's an audio program but it definitely has a look 14:02 and a feel about it. 14:04 We've been very careful 14:05 to create images of the main characters 14:08 and so in this video, 14:09 it kind of gives an overview of what the mission is 14:11 and your viewers can see what it looks like too. 14:14 Sounds perfect, let's take a look at that right now. 14:20 Hi, I am Jean Boonstra. 14:22 Discovery Mountain is a new program 14:24 brought to you by The Voice of Prophecy. 14:27 This Bible based adventure audio series 14:30 is especially for kids. 14:31 Well, and all of us, kids, at heart too. 14:34 Discovery Mountain is a place where God sends 14:37 just the right people, the ones who need to be there. 14:41 Every day in Discovery Mountain is an exercise in faith. 14:45 Now we created Discovery Mountain 14:47 with your kids, grandkids and students in mind. 14:51 New episodes will be released during peak seasons. 14:55 Our annual summer camp episodes for example, 14:58 well, there will be ready just in time 14:59 for your family road trip. 15:01 And our special holiday episodes, 15:04 well, they will be perfect for an end of the year 15:06 listening treat in the classroom 15:08 or as a bed time story 15:09 as the days get shorter and the nights get longer. 15:13 Now whether the children listening 15:14 are regular church attendees, 15:16 or if they've never been to church ever, 15:19 now all will enjoy the fun engaging stories. 15:23 Each episode presents Bible stories 15:26 and help with real life issues that kids struggle with today, 15:30 all in a non-threatening manner. 15:34 Now each of our audio CDs clearly indicates 15:37 both the Bible stories covered and the theme of the stories 15:41 such as forgiveness, jealousy, competition or loneliness. 15:46 This will help you as parents, grandparents, and teachers 15:50 to find just the right episodes for the children you care about 15:54 and, of course, the underlying theme of each episode 15:58 is the greatest story ever told, 16:00 Jesus and His love for each and every one of us. 16:04 You know, kids from any background 16:06 will have the opportunity to get to know Jesus 16:09 as their personal savior 16:11 while they are listening to Discovery Mountain. 16:14 Now as parents, 16:15 creating this resource for family 16:18 was a high priority for my husband Shawn and me. 16:21 In each episode, kids will get to know 16:23 the stories of the Bible and the timeless values 16:26 that God's Word shares. 16:29 Our two daughters, well, they are now young women, 16:32 and Discovery Mountain is the kind of program 16:34 that we wish had been available when they were just little. 16:38 I invite you to visit our website, 16:40 DiscoveryMountain.com. 16:42 There you can listen to the latest episodes, 16:45 see sketches of the characters, watch behind the scenes videos 16:49 and you will find tips and ideas 16:51 on how to use this program 16:52 both at home and in the classroom. 16:55 You know, kids seem to have 16:56 insatiable appetites for good stories, don't they? 17:00 Well, our website is here to help fill that need too. 17:03 Check DiscoveryMountain.com regularly 17:06 for bonus audio stories. 17:08 Well, I invite you to join Jake Donovan 17:11 and each of the characters 17:12 on an expedition in Discovery Mountain 17:15 where every day is an exercise in faith. 17:26 Amen. I love that. 17:28 And you know I am not a child anymore 17:31 but I enjoy the series. 17:33 I've just listened to a little bit of season four 17:36 and then several episodes of season five 17:39 and I found myself thinking, "I wonder what happens next." 17:42 I need to see what's gonna happen. 17:44 So this is not just for young people, 17:45 it will be for all ages as well. 17:47 Yeah, absolutely. 17:48 One of our dreams and our hopes when we created this program 17:51 is that it would be interesting enough 17:52 that families would really want to listen to it together 17:55 because when we listen together, 17:57 you know, we have an opportunity to talk about 17:59 those faith exercises as we call them, 18:02 and I have heard from a lot of individuals 18:04 who write to me and say, 18:05 "I can't wait for the next episode. 18:07 By the way, I am 67 years old." 18:11 You know, I think we all like stories, though. 18:12 Yeah, we do. 18:14 And you think about Jesus, when he walked this earth, 18:16 He spoke in parables 18:17 and He engaged His audience with that. 18:20 So here you are presenting biblical truth 18:22 in a way that people can connect with and resonate 18:24 at a heart level. 18:25 Yeah, yeah, that was the goal, absolutely. 18:28 And I have to tell you, Jill, 18:29 I was at a women's ministries event not long ago 18:32 and I was there for a totally separate purpose 18:34 from Discovery Mountain 18:35 but when I walked into the ballroom, 18:37 I met a dear lady, she gave me a big hug and she said, 18:40 "I am Discovery Mountain's biggest fan." 18:43 And I said, "Oh!" 18:44 She is 86 years old 18:46 and her friends affirmed 18:48 that she just loves the program. 18:49 So yes, you are right. 18:51 Storytelling and those timeless stories and truths 18:55 from the Bible really they are ageless. 18:57 They are, that's right. 18:58 So I noticed in that when you have 19:01 the open to each program, it talks something about, 19:03 of course, using your imagination, 19:05 but then it talks about faith. 19:07 And talk to me about 19:08 how faith is an integral part of the program? 19:11 Well, the way we phrase it to kind of make it interesting 19:13 is everyday isn't exercise in faith, you know? 19:17 So Discovery Mountain is this small town 19:19 that sat kind of in the mountains 19:21 and definitely Colorado was an inspiration for that, 19:25 and so the idea of exercising and being outdoors 19:29 and all of these activities, that's constantly a part of it. 19:32 I never thought of that, that's great. 19:33 Yeah. 19:34 But we wanted, of course, 19:36 the real way we exercise is exercising our faith 19:38 and just getting to know God and spending time with Him, 19:41 and the way that we do that in the program 19:45 is every season has a Bible story and a theme 19:48 and we always start there, 19:49 we always choose which story of the Bible we want to tell 19:53 and what the theme of that is, and then we incorporate that 19:56 into each and every single episode. 19:58 There is a Bible verse per episode 20:01 and then not only do we tell that Bible story, 20:05 the characters, fictitious characters, 20:07 of course, they experience those things along the way. 20:11 So I noticed it said 1968, Discovery Mountain 1968, 20:15 but we know that you started this program in 2017. 20:18 Right. So what's that all about? 20:20 You have a good eye. 20:21 It does say that on the logo. 20:24 There's... 20:25 So Discovery Mountain sort of stared by faith. 20:28 So one of our main characters, his name is George Simon, 20:31 we have a storyline where he actually discovers 20:35 Discovery Mountain kind of by accident 20:38 providentially back in 1968. 20:41 So that's when the town is birthed 20:44 and then you see his faith 20:47 and his staying there in that remote area, 20:50 that's where that date comes from. 20:52 That's great. Yeah. 20:54 So tell me where did you get the inspiration for the script 20:56 because right now, you are writing all the scripts, 20:58 is that correct? 20:59 Yes, that's correct. 21:01 So how do you come up with the scripts? 21:02 Well, I actually have a list, you know, in my computer, 21:07 one of the programs I use for taking notes 21:08 where every Bible story that I think is significant, 21:11 and of course every story in the Bible is significant, 21:14 but ones where I think you can really tell a story, 21:17 I have a whole list 21:18 and so when I think about an upcoming season, 21:21 I think about, well, which stories of the Bible 21:24 do I really want families to have a chance 21:27 to really get to know in a different way. 21:28 So for example, season four 21:30 when we decided to create that one, 21:32 the story of Esther is one of my favorites. 21:35 And the story of Esther 21:37 has wonderful themes throughout it. 21:39 I mean it's the whole theme with the great controversy, 21:41 you see good, you see evil, 21:43 you see God intervening for His people. 21:46 Esther is an ordinary person that God uses 21:50 in an incredibly extraordinary way. 21:52 Yes. 21:53 And so that was the foundation for that season. 21:56 And then we had the characters and the individuals 21:59 who live in Discovery Mountain 22:00 kind of experience the same themes. 22:03 So we have Mr. Simon, who we just talked about. 22:06 His niece visits and her name is Hattie 22:09 and she is working for a construction company, 22:11 and she discovers that 22:12 this company wants to destroy Discovery Mountain camp. 22:16 Kind of like a Haman experience then, okay. 22:18 Absolutely, so we have a Haman character 22:20 in Discovery Mountain. 22:21 We have Mordecai character in Discovery Mountain 22:24 and then Hattie, 22:26 the listeners discover a couple of episodes in, 22:28 of course that's short for of Hadassah. 22:30 And we have the opportunity 22:32 not only to talk about the story of Esther 22:34 but this character has her own Esther moments. 22:37 So that's an example of how we do that. 22:40 I love it. 22:41 It's like running a parallel story 22:42 along with the Bible. 22:44 So you take the story from the Bible 22:45 and then you run a parallel story 22:46 with modern-day life 22:48 and yet they are learning from the Bible at the same time. 22:50 That's fabulous, that's great. 22:52 So why did you want to start the series? 22:57 Why do we even have a need for that? 22:58 Right, right. 23:00 Well, I really had a couple of motivations 23:02 and one was that, 23:04 you know, when our daughters were little 23:05 and they are not anymore, they are young women, 23:08 but it feels like just yesterday. 23:09 But when they were young, as parents, 23:11 Shawn and I had a lot of conversations 23:13 and spent a lot of time thinking and praying 23:15 about what kind of Bible related content 23:19 we could share with our daughters. 23:21 And we had... 23:23 Personally as parents, we sort of had our own criteria 23:27 that we establish for choosing resources, 23:30 whether it's books or things that they watched... 23:32 Can I be nosy and ask what is that criteria? 23:35 What criteria would you set for your children? 23:37 Sure. 23:39 Well, again, this is very personal, 23:40 but for us, we wanted the animations, 23:43 whether it was something they were watching on a screen 23:45 or pictures in a book, 23:47 we wanted them to be realistic... 23:48 That's good. 23:49 Yeah, I never felt comfortable with Bible characters 23:52 being portrayed in a silly way or to look like caricatures. 23:56 I thought they should look like real people. 23:58 I respect that. Yeah. 24:00 And then we wanted the stories to be true to life. 24:03 So no talking animals, 24:06 no hopping in a time machine and going back in time, 24:09 those were important criteria for us 24:11 as well as that the story should just be things 24:17 that the kids could relate to. 24:18 Yes. 24:19 And for us personally, 24:21 we felt like we wanted to introduce 24:22 our kids primarily, not always but primarily 24:26 to the New King James Version of the Bible. 24:28 So we wanted them to become familiar with that language. 24:32 And so all of those criteria that we used 24:35 in parenting our daughters when they were young, 24:38 I've sort of applied now to creating Discovery Mountain. 24:41 So I wanted to create a resource 24:43 that I would have loved when my daughters were young, 24:46 and that I would have felt comfortable with using. 24:49 And, you know, I mean, Greg and I don't have children 24:51 but I can only imagine as a parent, 24:53 you want to know that your children are safe. 24:56 I mean, not just physically safe 24:58 but you want to know... 24:59 if I set them in front of a television, 25:01 or if I set them in front of a radio 25:03 and they are going to listen to a children's programming, 25:06 is it going to portray biblical principles? 25:08 Is it going to portray things that I, as a parent, 25:11 want to instill on my child? 25:13 I like that. Absolutely, absolutely. 25:14 And by the way, our daughters loved 3ABN Kids programming 25:17 when they were young, that was wonderful. 25:19 They spent a lot of time with that, 25:21 but they enjoyed it. 25:22 But, you know, so that was part of my motivation, 25:24 wanting to create this resource for families, for kids, 25:27 for parents but, you know, 25:29 and I think you've probably experienced this, 25:30 probably too, Jill, especially when 25:33 I am at women's ministries type of events 25:35 or talking to my female friends and colleagues, 25:38 there is a deep burden of grandparents 25:42 for their grandchildren. 25:43 Yeah. 25:45 Those parents who have adult children, 25:47 who maybe don't believe or aren't going to church, 25:50 then there is that disconnect with that third generation, 25:53 the grandkids, and so many grandparents 25:58 just have such a burden to reach those kids. 26:01 And I wanted, we wanted Discovery Mountain 26:03 to be a great resource for them, 26:05 something that, 26:06 if their grandchildren are visiting, 26:08 or if they have them 26:09 take driving them to and from church, 26:11 that they could play for them and it would be a gentle, 26:13 sort of engaging friendly way for them to talk about faith 26:17 and talk about their beliefs. 26:18 Amen. 26:20 That's beautiful 26:21 because I can think of phone calls 26:22 that we receive in the office 26:24 and sometimes people call distraught 26:25 and I don't work in the pastoral department, 26:27 so I wouldn't get all of those phone calls. 26:29 But sometimes 26:30 a grandma will call or something, 26:32 or a mom or something and those say, you know, 26:35 "I am really worried about my kids." 26:37 I mean, I agree with you, 26:39 that is a burden for kids and for grandkids, 26:41 those who are not walking with God or don't know God, 26:44 and how can I bring them back. 26:46 And, of course, we know 26:47 it's the drawing of the Holy Spirit, 26:49 it's nothing we can do but the Lord has blessed 26:51 with different avenues 26:53 that you can put in front of your children, 26:54 and one of them is Discovery Mountain. 26:57 So that's an incredible resource 26:59 that God has given. 27:01 So praise the Lord for that. 27:02 We aired Discovery Mountain, 27:03 we just kind of make sure we get this in here. 27:06 On 3ABN Radio, 27:07 Discovery Mountain airs every Sunday evening 27:11 at 7:30 PM Central. 27:13 So all you have to do is 27:15 tune into 3ABN Radio at 7:30 PM Central, 27:19 or you can go and listen to it on your website as well 27:22 because I know that's how I've been listening 27:24 because that's way, it's on demand, 27:25 anytime you want, you can listen to it. 27:27 Yes, yes, absolutely. 27:28 And we are delighted to be part of the 3ABN 27:30 Radio family of stations because that's a whole network 27:34 that you have established there. 27:36 And the website is mobile-friendly 27:38 which we created intentionally for parents 27:40 so that if whether you are viewing the website 27:43 on a smartphone, on a tablet, on a laptop or home computer, 27:47 it sorts of scales to the size of your screen 27:49 and it's a convenient way to listen as well. 27:51 Yes, and what's the website? 27:52 I know we'll put up the address at the end 27:54 but what's the website? 27:55 Sure. DiscoveryMountain.com. 27:57 Okay. Very simple. 27:58 Wonderful. 27:59 So let's go back to grandparents for a moment. 28:02 What influence can grandparents 28:03 have on their grandchildren's lives? 28:05 Well, you know, and I am thinking 28:07 future forward here, I don't have grandkids yet, 28:10 although I am letting my hair grow grey, 28:12 I am trying to embrace that. 28:14 You look beautiful. 28:15 Oh, you're sweet, thank you. 28:18 But just it's that experience of the grandparents 28:21 that I've interacted with 28:22 and I felt the burden that they have in their heart. 28:24 And, you know, grandparents have 28:26 a wonderful opportunity to influence that 28:29 third generation as we call it. 28:30 But I also believe, Jill, that there is a duty there 28:33 to train up that next generation. 28:35 And I think of a couple of places in scriptures 28:38 where we see that. 28:39 Good. 28:40 When we are thinking back to the Exodus, 28:43 you know, Moses before the children of Israel 28:47 take that first step into the Promised Land, 28:49 of course, Moses can't lead them there, 28:52 that's a whole other study, 28:54 but before Joshua leads them into the Promised Land, 28:56 Moses pauses and he just reminds 29:00 the gathered people there of where they've been, 29:03 where God has taken them, 29:04 he has taken them out of bondage, 29:06 they've had this amazing journey for 40 years 29:09 where they've learned so much. 29:11 And then Moses reminds them and he encourages them, 29:14 and he reminds them of the things 29:15 that God has done for them. 29:17 Yes. 29:18 And in Deuteronomy 4:9, these are the words 29:22 that Moses wants the children of Israel not to forget. 29:25 It says, "Only take heed to yourself, 29:28 and diligently keep yourself, 29:29 lest you forget the things your eyes have seen, 29:33 and lest they depart from your heart 29:35 all the days of your life. 29:37 And teach them to your children and your grandchildren." 29:41 So he is encouraging them 29:42 and reminding them of their duty 29:44 that if they don't share this with the next generations, 29:48 they won't necessarily remember those blessings, 29:50 and how God intervened in their lives, 29:53 and what He did for them, 29:54 and He doesn't want them to forget 29:56 that beautiful forgiveness, 29:59 and that journey that they took with Him. 30:01 And, you know, the Bible says a lot about grandparents, 30:04 more than I realized before I began studying this 30:06 and before this became a real passion for me. 30:09 In the Book of Proverbs, Proverbs 13:22. 30:12 I am just jumping over there, you said Proverbs 13:22? 30:16 Proverbs 13:22. 30:18 There is a verse for grandparents here, 30:20 it says, "A good man..." 30:22 And we can substitute man or a woman. 30:24 "A good man leaves an inheritance 30:27 to his children's children." 30:29 So I think when we read the word inheritance, 30:32 we automatically think of that transferring of wealth 30:35 to another generation. 30:37 That's how we think of... Playing with money. 30:38 Yeah. That's how we think of inheritance nowadays. 30:41 But there is a much richer, deeper inheritance 30:45 that grandparents can share with their grandchildren. 30:50 And we see a wonderful example of that in Timothy. 30:53 In 2 Timothy 1. 30:56 Now, of course, this is Paul's letter to Timothy. 30:58 Timothy, a young man of faith, a young man being used of God. 31:02 And Paul writes 31:04 about that history of faith that Timothy has. 31:07 So 2 Timothy 1:3-5. 31:10 It says, "I thank God, 31:12 whom I serve with a pure conscience, 31:14 as my forefathers did, as without ceasing 31:17 I remember you in my prayers night and day, 31:19 greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, 31:23 that I may be filled with joy..." 31:24 So this is Paul writing to Timothy. 31:26 "When I call to remembrance 31:28 the genuine faith that is in you, 31:30 which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois 31:33 and your mother Eunice, 31:34 and I am persuaded is in you also." 31:38 Wow. 31:39 And so Timothy had the perfect inheritance 31:42 from his grandmother and his mother 31:44 which was that genuine faith 31:46 that these godly women must have exemplified, 31:49 shared with him, told him the stories 31:51 and encouraged him to have that faith. 31:53 So it's a wonderful legacy that grandparents can leave 31:57 with that next generation. 31:58 Amen. It's a beautiful legacy. 32:00 You know, you think whether 32:02 you have a great deal of money or not, 32:04 that doesn't matter because that spiritual inheritance, 32:07 your legacy of faith, 32:09 your legacy of what you know of Jesus. 32:12 And your journey with Jesus, 32:14 you have the privilege and opportunity 32:16 to pass down not just to your children 32:18 but to your grandchildren and I think, you know, 32:21 Greg and I don't have children, so you can mentor 32:24 other people's children and grandchildren, 32:27 you can be a spiritual mother or grandmother in Israel 32:31 or a spiritual father or grandfather in Israel. 32:33 You can mentor people in the church 32:35 or in the community. 32:36 You can invite them in to listen to Discovery Mountain 32:40 and to learn and so that's incredible. 32:42 So let's talk a little more about Discovery Mountain. 32:45 How do you get the actors? 32:47 How do they come? 32:49 Oh, that is a wonderful story. 32:52 So none of our voice actors are professional actors at all. 32:56 They sound professional. I mean they sound incredible. 32:57 Don't they sound wonderful? They do, they do. 32:59 So our main character in the program, 33:01 his name is Jake Donovan. 33:03 And, sort of, as we were creating this program, 33:05 we sort of had multiple characters, 33:08 multiple voice actors in mind, 33:10 just didn't have anyone in mind for Jake Donovan 33:13 and I thought, "Well, Lord, who can voice that role. 33:16 It's so important 33:17 and that person needs to be available." 33:19 And one day, someone that works for us, 33:22 our media director at The Voice of Prophecy, 33:24 Ruben Gomez, he was voicing something 33:27 for a completely other project that we were doing 33:30 for Voice of Prophecy and I heard his voice 33:33 and I thought, "Ah, Lord, 33:36 I think you have Ruben in mind." 33:38 And so I had to approach him 33:39 and ask if he would preferredly consider that 33:42 on top of his already busy schedule 33:44 but he did. 33:46 He prayed and he accepted. 33:47 So our media director for our VOP 33:49 is the voice of Jake Donovan. 33:52 Mr. Simon is voiced by our receptionist, 33:54 George Swanson who is a wonderful man. 33:57 And you know, we talk a lot on the program 33:59 about how God sends just the right people 34:02 to Discovery Mountain, that's part of the storyline. 34:05 But He has sent just the right voice actors to us. 34:08 I'm telling you just on the production side 34:11 of this project, we've seen God's hand at work. 34:15 A gal named Lisa. 34:17 She brought her son in to audition for the program. 34:19 She lives in our area. 34:21 And as our director, 34:22 Director Doug often does when parents come in, 34:24 he says, "Mom, why don't you get in the studio 34:27 and audition as well." 34:29 And sometimes, the parents play along 34:31 and she did and she's amazingly talented. 34:33 She does such a wonderful job. 34:36 Who does she play? 34:37 She plays a gal named Allie 34:39 who is part of an historical flashback 34:42 where we talk about pilots... 34:44 Female pilots during World War II. 34:45 Okay. 34:47 And we're going to have her appear again. 34:48 She'll be in other seasons too. 34:50 So God just... 34:51 She had no desire to even audition for the program 34:54 and she's wonderfully talented 34:56 and so that was a really neat way to see 34:58 God's hand at work and sending the right people. 35:00 Amen. Oh, that's wonderful. 35:03 So I would imagine when you do production, 35:05 everything is perfect. 35:06 Nobody ever makes mistakes and it just goes flawless. 35:10 Of course. Is this kind of how it... 35:12 Yeah, that's how production work goes, doesn't it? 35:16 Never any hiccups in production. 35:17 We already at 3ABN, that definitely doesn't happen. 35:20 I know you would know that too, but I think you have 35:21 a special role of bloopers, is that right? 35:23 We do, we do. 35:25 You know, we love to create supplemental video content. 35:28 We go on field trips. 35:29 We do all kinds of fun stuff that's on the website. 35:31 But the favorite thing for kids and older, 35:34 kids at heart to watch is our bloopers, 35:37 and I think this bloopers reel 35:39 that you have is from season two 35:41 if I remember correctly. 35:42 Okay, wonderful. 35:44 Let's take a look at that reel right now. 35:48 Hi, Director Doug here 35:50 with another look behind the scenes 35:51 on how we make a Discovery Mountain program. 35:54 One thing I've really began to appreciate now 35:57 working on several episodes of Discovery Mountain 35:59 is the quality of our actors. 36:01 They've done a fabulous job and you need to keep in mind 36:04 that none of these actors are professional. 36:07 They are either high school students 36:09 or in the case of our adult actors, 36:12 they have other jobs 36:13 and sometimes we even use elementary school students. 36:16 And I think they are doing a fabulous job. 36:18 And the end result shows it. The program sounds terrific. 36:22 But every once in a while, 36:26 things don't always go as planned. 36:28 Why don't you take a look? 36:32 And I have found German... 36:35 Sorry. 36:38 Wait, did you say... 36:43 My dad was surprised when Gadget came home... 36:48 Sorry. 36:49 I had three days to think about, 36:51 let me start little before that... 36:55 Chamomile tea. 36:57 It's a plant. Some family, same family as... 37:00 Gadget, come back here. 37:03 I don't want to lose you on the first day here. 37:06 Whoa... 37:07 Oh, sorry. 37:09 When is the last time I saw cow... 37:12 Wallpaper? 37:14 Chamomile... 37:15 cam-a-meal, cam-a-meal... 37:19 When is the last time I saw... What the... 37:21 Okay... 37:24 When is... Okay... 37:25 Well, what else should I say? 37:28 Flap your arms? 37:32 I love this. I could do this all day... 37:36 Have you explored it yet? 37:37 Sounds good. Let me grab my skirts... 37:41 I am sorry. 37:43 I thought it was Ruben, I was like... 37:44 Chamomile tea. It is a plant. 37:48 Some family, same family... 37:50 And maybe it's just that I am hungry all the time 37:52 in camp... Okay, I'm sorry. 37:56 I can't hear, I don't know what's going on. 37:58 May I borrow it when you are done reading... 38:00 When you are done... 38:02 Okay. Okay. Okay. 38:03 Chamomile tea. It is a plant. 38:07 Some... 38:09 And just to be perfectly fair, 38:11 it's not only the actors that make mistakes. 38:14 Hi. I am Director Doug and... 38:17 And click on the blue... 38:20 When I read the script for the... 38:25 Hi. I am Director Doug. 38:27 I am from Canada... 38:28 What's a trees favorite drink? 38:31 Root beer. 38:43 You know what I love about that is it sounds like 38:45 you all have a great time. 38:47 Oh, absolutely. We have so much fun. 38:49 You can see that, you know, 38:50 they'd like each other and just in the studio 38:52 and having a wonderful time. 38:54 I love that. That's great. 38:56 So how long does it actually take 38:57 because obviously with stopping and restarting? 39:00 How long does it take to do an episode, 39:01 a 28-30 episode? 39:03 That's a really good question. We do them in seasons. 39:06 So a season is either six or ten episodes 39:09 and we block out about ten days to do a season. 39:12 And you know how production goes. 39:15 As I said, all of our voice actors are volunteers 39:17 and so we're working around school schedules, 39:20 we are working around people's work schedules. 39:22 Some days, we go 12 hours, 39:23 some days we go 4 hours in the morning 39:25 and 4 hours in the evening. 39:27 But it's about 10 days of production per season. 39:30 That's wonderful, 39:32 and you're in the middle of season five, right? 39:33 Yes. Okay. 39:34 Now what's the Bible story behind each season? 39:36 I know, I'm putting you on the spot here. 39:38 I know, Moses was in season five, I remember that. 39:40 Yes. What about the other seasons? 39:42 So season one, 39:43 we kind of introduced Discovery Mountain. 39:45 We let the listeners get to know the characters 39:49 and the setting of the story and that Jonah's story. 39:52 So Jake Donovan is running away from something. 39:55 We find out it's his calling from God to serve Him. 39:58 And so we tell the story of Jonah 40:01 which very much fits how Jake Donovan is feeling. 40:05 Season two is a summer camp, 40:06 our first summer camp series which there's one every year. 40:09 And the campers... 40:11 The way we tell the Bible story during summer camp 40:14 is the campers do a production at the end of camp. 40:17 And so, 40:18 throughout they are learning the story of Joseph, 40:20 for season two, and then on the final episode, 40:23 the final night of camp, 40:24 they actually do a production of the story of Joseph. 40:27 So there we were able to talk about competition, 40:30 jealousy with all the brothers. 40:32 Season three is a holiday season. 40:35 So we started with a thankfulness episode 40:38 and then told the story, 40:39 the Christmas story right from the Bible. 40:41 Amen. 40:42 Season four is the story of Esther 40:45 which we talked about a little bit earlier. 40:47 And season five 40:48 is the early part of Moses' life. 40:51 I couldn't quite tackle all of Moses' story in one season. 40:55 But we focused on, you know... 40:58 And the faith of his mother Jochebed, for example. 41:01 She had to give him up 41:02 and then she had the opportunity 41:04 to have that baby in her home 41:05 for a few years to raise him to be a young man, 41:08 and then she sent him off to the palace 41:10 where he made decisions 41:12 based on the faith she instilled in him. 41:14 Amen. 41:15 And then, ongoing, of course, 41:16 we could be here all day if I talked about all of that. 41:19 I was just gonna ask what's coming up in season six 41:21 or you not disclose those trade secrets? 41:23 No, that's okay. Season six. 41:25 I've really enjoyed season six 41:27 because we're doing something a little bit new. 41:29 So we always tell 41:31 the Bible story by kind of reenacting it. 41:34 So we have a voice actress, does the voice of Esther, 41:36 for example. 41:38 In season six, we're doing a historical flashback 41:41 where we talk about 41:44 the female pilots of World War II 41:47 the WASPS which I love that learning that history 41:50 and researching it for the program. 41:52 And it's also in the context of telling 41:54 the Bible story of the Good Samaritan. 41:56 So we actually took one of the parables 41:58 and wove it into a complete season. 42:01 I love that. That's great. 42:03 Oh, okay, so what about... 42:05 If someone saying, I'm a teacher at a school 42:07 and I really like to incorporate 42:09 this into my classroom or I am a homeschooling mom 42:12 and I'd like to incorporate this with my children. 42:15 Do you have extra resources in addition to the audio? 42:19 What you have available? 42:20 Yeah, that's a great question because 42:21 we get a lot of requests for that kind of thing. 42:23 And so that's something 42:24 we're more in the process of developing. 42:26 Right now, we have interactive activities for every season, 42:29 not necessarily every episode, but every season 42:31 which can be downloaded right off of the website. 42:34 And for example, when the freshman class 42:36 at Discovery Mountain Academy 42:37 is learning about the layers of the earth's atmosphere, 42:41 we created a downloadable sheet 42:42 where the listener can then work on learning the layers 42:46 of the earth's atmosphere as well. 42:47 But one thing we're in the process 42:49 of creating is exercise... 42:52 Faith exercise books we're calling them. 42:53 So these are workbooks. 42:55 We don't have one for every season yet, 42:57 but beginning with season four, 42:59 this is a workbook that has activities 43:02 that are geared towards first to third graders 43:05 and then activities that are geared towards 43:07 older elementary school students and throughout. 43:10 There are also coloring pages, so the younger child 43:13 who can't yet read can still listen 43:16 and color the pictures. 43:17 So these exercises just take the Bible verses, 43:21 the faith exercises just to a deeper level. 43:24 Oh, that's great because you know, 43:25 when you get into it, 43:27 you learn more and you retain more. 43:29 It's not just listening to it 43:30 but then they can do these exercises as well. 43:32 Absolutely. Amen. 43:33 That's wonderful. 43:35 So before we move on, 43:36 I know we're almost at the end of the program 43:38 and here before we get to the end, 43:40 we want to make sure we put up the contact information 43:43 for Discovery Mountain so that you can contact them 43:45 and you can get involved in this incredible program 43:48 for children and any age, 43:50 I think it would work for any age group as well, 43:52 but specifically geared for young people. 43:55 But before we do that, and we talk about 43:57 just a little bit about other things 43:59 that are going on at the VOP. 44:00 Okay. 44:01 I want to see, if you don't mind, 44:03 making an appeal to someone at home. 44:05 If there is someone at home 44:06 who says, you know, "I have kids, 44:09 I have grandkids, and I'm worried for them 44:12 and I'm not sure what to do." 44:14 What would you tell them, Jean? 44:17 And that, that really is a burden 44:19 that I hear a lot and I think sometimes 44:23 grandparents particularly, 44:24 they feel like their hands are tied. 44:26 They don't have that day-to-day contact 44:28 with these grandchildren they love and they adore. 44:31 And just sharing their faith, 44:33 finding these easy ways to share faith 44:37 such as Discovery Mountain, 44:38 where a program can be played and you just see if the kids 44:41 perhaps respond to it or not, and it gives you an opportunity 44:44 to talk about the Bible. 44:45 But I would just appeal to the grandparents 44:48 to just consider that a privilege, 44:51 it may feel like 44:52 perhaps a burden to share that faith with those children. 44:57 But it's a privilege to be able to do that. 45:00 And I read something recently in Life Sketches, 45:04 let's see if I have it here, I do, 45:05 where Sister White was meeting with her own grandchildren 45:10 and she had some words that she shared with them, 45:12 and I'd love to just share that with your viewers. 45:15 So this is found in Life Sketches 45:16 and it's a Sabbath afternoon 45:18 and the children of Willie White are gathered, 45:21 and I believe it's later 45:23 in Ellen White's life, and these are the words 45:25 that are recorded for us that she shared. 45:27 She said, "The Lord is very good to us 45:30 and if we follow on to know the Lord, 45:33 we shall know that his going forth 45:35 is prepared as the morning. 45:37 If there is any question in your minds," 45:39 again, she is talking to her grandchildren, 45:41 "any question in your minds in regard to what is right, 45:44 look to the Lord Jesus and He will guide you. 45:49 We should bring every plan to the Lord 45:51 to see if He approves it. 45:53 Remember that the Lord will carry us through. 45:55 I am guarding every moment 45:57 so that nothing may come between me and the Lord. 46:00 I hope there will not. 46:02 God grant that we may all prove faithful. 46:05 There will be a glorious meeting soon. 46:07 I am glad that you have come to see me. 46:10 May the Lord bless you." 46:12 So that she's encouraging this third generation 46:16 that the Lord will carry them through, 46:19 just as He carries each and every one of us through. 46:21 And I just pray that parents and grandparents, 46:23 as we care for these children, 46:25 the Lord will carry us through as well 46:27 and He will provide a way 46:29 for us to lead as He wants us to. 46:31 Amen. That's right. 46:33 You know, God tells us in Isaiah, 46:35 "I will contend with those that content with thee, 46:37 and I will save your children," 46:39 and we could say your grandchildren as well 46:42 because God loves them and He's drawing them 46:44 even now to Himself with those quotes of love. 46:46 He's not willing that any should perish, 46:49 but that all should come to repentance. 46:51 So talk to us just a moment here 46:53 about some other things going on 46:55 at The Voice of Prophecy. 46:56 I know Disclosure would be 46:58 like your flagship program, is that right? 46:59 Yes, yes. That's correct. 47:00 So Disclosure is a weekly one-hour program 47:03 that Shawn and I co-host together. 47:06 We talk about all different things. 47:08 Disclosure, you know, by the name you probably guess, 47:11 we're just looking at issues in the Bible, 47:13 issues in day-to-day life, 47:15 where we can grow our relationship with God, 47:17 and we dig in and sometimes I've asked Shawn 47:20 tough questions that he receives 47:22 during evangelistic meetings 47:23 and he answers them right on the air. 47:26 So those are the kind of things we're doing with Disclosure. 47:28 But when Shawn and I started 47:30 at The Voice of Prophecy in 2013, 47:33 that was an opportunity for us to pray and to talk to God 47:38 about what direction He wanted this ministry 47:40 to go under Shawn's leadership. 47:42 And we really felt impressed that Voice of Prophecy 47:45 was no longer a media ministry but an evangelistic ministry 47:50 that uses media to do the work of evangelism. 47:52 It's good. 47:54 And so we are creating an entire package of resources 47:57 for local churches to use in their communities 48:00 during the pre-work of evangelism, 48:02 during evangelism and during the follow-up phase 48:04 and that's Shawn's portfolio. 48:07 So I can't really speak in detail. 48:10 You might want to have him on the program 48:11 one day to talk about that in detail. 48:13 We will do that. 48:14 But it's called Discovery Centers 48:16 and Discovery Mountain 48:18 is part of that package of resources, 48:21 where the local church can minister to the children 48:24 and families in the community. 48:25 Amen. 48:26 So how has being at The Voice of Prophecy, 48:29 how has that grown you as a woman, as a woman of God, 48:33 how has that grown you spiritually? 48:35 Because I know your kids were younger 48:36 but now they're growing up and you're not need, 48:39 not that you're not needed, that's not the right word, 48:41 but as integrally involved in their lives. 48:44 So how has that grown you? 48:45 Yeah, well, it's been a wonderful journey. 48:48 Our daughters have become young women 48:49 and the parenting at this stage of life is different. 48:54 And it has freed me to do more things 48:56 for women's ministry which I've really enjoyed. 48:58 Amen. 49:00 It's been a wonderful opportunity to fellowship 49:02 with women and to... 49:04 They feed my faith. 49:06 And just really the whole process of taking a ministry 49:11 that has existed for more than 85 years, you know, 49:13 Voice of Prophecy started with H.M.S. Richards, 49:16 wonderful ministry, 49:17 and just to have God lead and guide us in faith 49:20 on the direction 49:22 He wants it to go for the future, moving forward, 49:25 has grown my faith immensely, just immensely 49:29 and we've really had to rely on Him, 49:32 spent time just praying and talking to Him 49:36 and feeling that full reliance on Him in this journey. 49:39 And that's really a wonderful thing. 49:41 Amen, that is incredible. 49:42 Before we put up your address, what I want to do right now 49:45 is just spend just a moment in prayer 49:48 for someone whose children maybe aren't walking with God 49:52 or maybe they are and they say, "I want to make sure that 49:55 they continue walking with God," 49:56 or someone whose maybe even grandchildren aren't. 49:59 So let's just take a moment. 50:01 Wherever you are, if you're driving in the car, 50:03 you can keep your eyes open on the road 50:05 but just in your spirit, bow with us in prayer. 50:09 Holy Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, 50:11 and we just thank You that we can call You, Abba, Father. 50:16 We thank You that we can come boldly 50:18 before Your throne knowing that we find grace and mercy 50:23 and help in our time of need 50:25 and right now we are praying for our brothers and sisters 50:28 who are watching this program 50:29 or who are listening to this program, 50:33 those who are may be hurting for children or grandchildren. 50:37 Lord, we ask in the name of Jesus, 50:39 that You would put a hedge of protection 50:41 around these children 50:42 that angels that excel in strength 50:45 would be around them that 50:47 You would draw them with Your cords of love, 50:49 draw them back to Yourself, 50:51 and that Satan would not be allowed to have them, 50:54 that they would make decisions for You, 50:56 that You would use Your Word, 50:59 You would use people in their lives, 51:01 their families to speak a word into their lives 51:05 and that they would make a decision for You. 51:07 And that when You come again in the clouds of glory, 51:10 these precious grandparents and parents 51:13 could look up and say, 51:14 "God, we are here with the family 51:16 that You have entrusted to us, 51:18 and we just thank You and give you praise 51:21 in the precious and holy name of Jesus. 51:23 Amen. Amen. 51:25 Amen. Thank you so much. 51:26 What we're going to do right now 51:28 is put up contact information for Discovery Mountain 51:31 and The Voice of Prophecy. 51:33 We want to encourage you. 51:34 If you would like any of those resources, 51:36 if you're a teacher or a homeschooling parent, 51:38 if you want to get involved in the ministry, 51:41 if you want to financially support the ministry, 51:44 here's how you can do just that. 51:49 If you would like to support Discovery Mountain 51:51 and its mission to create a fun way for kids 51:54 from all backgrounds to get to know Jesus, 51:56 please visit their website DiscoveryMountain.com. 52:00 There you will find links to all their stories, 52:03 background information on their story characters 52:06 and even a way to donate online. 52:09 That website again is DiscoveryMountain.com 52:13 You can also call them 52:14 at (805) 955-7611 52:19 or write to The Voice of Prophecy, 52:22 PO Box 999, Loveland, Colorado 80539. |
