I mean, you can be born and raised 00:10:57.25\00:10:59.35 in a Christian family 00:10:59.39\00:11:01.52 but that doesn't necessarily mean it's personal to you. 00:11:01.56\00:11:03.66 Kareen: Right. 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.06 Shelley: Is that when it became personal? 00:11:05.09\00:11:06.43 Kareen: And that's when it became personal, 00:11:06.46\00:11:07.80 it's like actually on that trip... 00:11:07.83\00:11:09.43 is when I felt the connection to God and saying, 00:11:09.46\00:11:13.44 "You know, this is what I was meant to do, 00:11:13.47\00:11:15.90 this is what my passion would be 00:11:15.97\00:11:18.17 is to serve people and to be able to help people" 00:11:18.21\00:11:20.54 and I think that when you are a teenager 00:11:20.58\00:11:23.75 you see things in a totally different light, 00:11:23.78\00:11:26.01 you're seeing things... 00:11:26.05\00:11:27.38 "Well, what can I get... what can I receive?" 00:11:27.42\00:11:29.75 And when you're giving 00:11:29.78\00:11:31.42 and you're able to share with other people 00:11:31.45\00:11:33.79 especially on a level of... 00:11:33.82\00:11:35.39 these people's homes were totally devastated 00:11:35.42\00:11:38.09 by the hurricane, 00:11:38.16\00:11:39.49 they had no roof, 00:11:39.53\00:11:40.86 they had a low supply of food and things like that 00:11:40.90\00:11:42.86 and we were able to come and help them with that... 00:11:42.90\00:11:45.33 totally changed my life. 00:11:45.37\00:11:46.70 Praise God, I always tell people 00:11:46.74\00:11:48.24 and I hope if you're listening, 00:11:48.27\00:11:49.97 "If you want your child 00:11:50.01\00:11:52.17 to really get connected to the Lord, 00:11:52.21\00:11:54.04 take them on a mission trip" 00:11:54.08\00:11:55.78 because I see... I mean for years I hear stories of kids... 00:11:55.81\00:12:02.05 even troubled kids... and spoiled kids... 00:12:02.08\00:12:05.62 we are so spoiled here in the United States 00:12:05.65\00:12:09.19 and then when we go on a mission trip 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.86 and you see others who have so little, 00:12:11.89\00:12:14.73 but you're seeing their response to... 00:12:14.76\00:12:17.77 when God uses you as His hands and feet, 00:12:17.80\00:12:20.54 it's exciting... it's exciting. 00:12:20.60\00:12:22.67 Okay, so, your husband shared that same vision 00:12:22.70\00:12:28.64 now, he's a dentist, correct? 00:12:28.68\00:12:31.41 So my husband is a Dentist, Dr. Bryan Wilson, 00:12:31.45\00:12:33.48 we actually have a dental practice 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.08 in West Hartford, Connecticut 00:12:35.12\00:12:36.62 we've been there for a little over 20 years 00:12:36.65\00:12:39.39 and we... before we had our children, 00:12:39.42\00:12:41.49 we went on quite a few mission trips to different countries, 00:12:41.52\00:12:45.43 Peru, Dominica, Dominican Republic 00:12:45.49\00:12:49.10 and we really enjoyed... 00:12:49.33\00:12:51.13 we actually worked with another group 00:12:51.17\00:12:53.17 that did a lot of construction 00:12:53.20\00:12:54.54 so we were kind of like the side gig 00:12:54.57\00:12:56.74 and that's where we met Dr. Roy Kellerman 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.67 and he was a medical doctor and his wife is a nurse, 00:12:58.71\00:13:00.98 and we went on a lot of mission trips 00:13:01.01\00:13:02.91 and then after I had my girls, we took a little bit of a break 00:13:02.94\00:13:05.81 and we still felt the calling 00:13:05.85\00:13:08.82 to be able to still go on mission trips 00:13:08.85\00:13:10.79 but we just didn't know how to go about it. 00:13:10.82\00:13:12.72 So, as we were discussing earlier 00:13:12.75\00:13:16.12 is that... Dr. Kellerman was in Maryland 00:13:16.19\00:13:18.99 and he was visiting his daughter there 00:13:19.03\00:13:21.76 and he heard a sermon about the pool of Bethesda 00:13:21.80\00:13:24.67 and what it really meant 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.43 and it took him to a whole new level 00:13:26.47\00:13:28.57 when he learned that the pool of Bethesda meant mercy 00:13:28.60\00:13:31.51 and it meant serving and meant compassion 00:13:31.54\00:13:34.71 and when Jesus was there and healed that man 00:13:34.74\00:13:37.28 or he wanted... everybody wanted to touch that water 00:13:37.31\00:13:39.41 and they believed that they would be healed 00:13:39.48\00:13:40.98 it... it... it spoke to Him 00:13:41.02\00:13:43.25 so he came back to Connecticut and said, 00:13:43.28\00:13:45.95 "You know what? Let's start something, 00:13:45.99\00:13:47.79 let's... as small as it may be 00:13:47.82\00:13:49.79 let's see what we can do" 00:13:49.82\00:13:51.59 and Dr. Kellerman and my husband, Bryan 00:13:51.63\00:13:55.30 and Delores and myself, 00:13:55.36\00:13:57.10 we got together and we started thinking about 00:13:57.13\00:13:59.33 what Bethesda Medical Mission could be. 00:13:59.37\00:14:00.84 And so, as you were planning this and seeking the Lord, 00:14:00.87\00:14:04.97 how did He lead you... 00:14:05.01\00:14:07.54 I mean, I know now that Bethesda Medical Mission Inc. 00:14:07.58\00:14:10.95 is a 501c3... a non-profit 00:14:10.98\00:14:13.52 and all who are there volunteer their time, 00:14:13.58\00:14:17.25 nobody gets paid a salary from this, 00:14:17.29\00:14:19.12 so, everything that you're doing, 00:14:19.15\00:14:22.22 when the funds come in, 00:14:22.26\00:14:23.59 it goes to the relief of the needy. 00:14:23.63\00:14:25.39 Kareen: Yes. 00:14:25.43\00:14:26.76 But tell us about that planning stage 00:14:26.80\00:14:28.40 because there are people out there 00:14:28.43\00:14:30.27 who feel like God wants them to do something 00:14:30.30\00:14:33.00 but they don't know how to get started. 00:14:33.03\00:14:34.87 Yeah, so it is... it was a lot of planning in the beginning 00:14:34.90\00:14:38.67 because... and I think what jumpstarted it 00:14:38.71\00:14:40.61 was because of the immediate response that was needed 00:14:40.64\00:14:44.01 in Haiti after the earthquake, 00:14:44.05\00:14:45.78 it was so devastating that we couldn't even get in 00:14:45.81\00:14:48.92 right after the year that it happened 00:14:48.95\00:14:50.72 but we knew that... especially after the earthquake 00:14:50.79\00:14:53.86 that people needed care 00:14:53.89\00:14:55.22 and so, we said, 00:14:55.26\00:14:56.59 "Let's make it a medical professional group" 00:14:56.62\00:15:00.00 so it would be a group of people 00:15:00.03\00:15:01.36 either in the medical field or in the dental field 00:15:01.40\00:15:03.70 and let's go in and see where we could help. 00:15:03.77\00:15:06.00 So, that's what we did, 00:15:06.03\00:15:07.37 we came together with a group of people 00:15:07.40\00:15:09.24 who were like-minded, 00:15:09.27\00:15:11.07 we sent out the call to different people that we knew 00:15:11.11\00:15:14.71 that might be interested in joining us 00:15:14.74\00:15:16.48 and we were very surprised to get a lot of people 00:15:16.51\00:15:19.51 that really wanted to help 00:15:19.55\00:15:20.88 if they couldn't go on the mission trip themselves, 00:15:20.92\00:15:23.65 they decided to send money or donations to help us 00:15:23.69\00:15:26.09 and it was a blessing. 00:15:26.12\00:15:28.62 I think our first trip, we had a little over 30 people 00:15:28.66\00:15:30.89 that joined us 00:15:30.93\00:15:32.26 and we were able to provide medical and dental care 00:15:32.29\00:15:35.50 to anybody and everybody who came to our clinics... 00:15:35.53\00:15:38.90 they were mobile clinics 00:15:38.93\00:15:40.27 because we tried to move around a little bit 00:15:40.30\00:15:41.64 so that we could reach people 00:15:41.67\00:15:43.00 but it... it really was a blessing 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.94 and we saw so many wonderful things. 00:15:44.97\00:15:47.18 Wonderful... wonderful, 00:15:47.21\00:15:48.61 so, you've been back to Haiti how many times? 00:15:48.64\00:15:51.28 We've been to Haiti for five trips, 00:15:51.31\00:15:53.65 we've done five mission trips since that first trip. 00:15:53.68\00:15:56.05 Okay, now, give us a little of... 00:15:56.08\00:15:59.32 when you said there was a lot of planning 00:15:59.35\00:16:02.99 just tell us a little bit about the process of that 00:16:03.02\00:16:06.70 because once again... 00:16:06.76\00:16:08.10 we have people I know who are interested, 00:16:08.13\00:16:10.47 tell us a little of the process of that. 00:16:10.50\00:16:12.93 So, the process is... is that we had to find 00:16:12.97\00:16:15.94 a group to work with while we were in Haiti. 00:16:16.00\00:16:19.07 So, when you're going into a developing country 00:16:19.11\00:16:21.58 or going into a place that you want to serve, 00:16:21.64\00:16:24.95 it was very much an advantage to us 00:16:24.98\00:16:27.78 to know what was going to be happening on the ground, 00:16:27.82\00:16:30.15 so, we had to find someone 00:16:30.19\00:16:32.49 either we could have somebody the connection with 00:16:32.52\00:16:34.66 and so, we found somebody in Haiti... 00:16:34.69\00:16:36.52 we actually a local pastor that we worked with 00:16:36.59\00:16:39.16 actually in Connecticut 00:16:39.19\00:16:40.60 and he helped us with planning everything on the ground. 00:16:40.63\00:16:43.73 First and foremost is to make sure that everybody was safe, 00:16:43.77\00:16:46.84 making sure that we would have clinics or places 00:16:46.87\00:16:49.34 where we could go and we could set up our clinics 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.67 and to actually find a place where we could serve 00:16:51.74\00:16:53.98 and that we could do it effectively. 00:16:54.04\00:16:55.54 So, that took a lot of planning, the other thing is, 00:16:55.58\00:16:59.05 is trying to find housing for everybody. 00:16:59.11\00:17:01.42 So, that is another step of something 00:17:01.45\00:17:03.72 that takes a lot of logistics, 00:17:03.75\00:17:05.72 a lot of time and energy to get into 00:17:05.75\00:17:08.42 and then, also, the people that are going to be joining in, 00:17:08.46\00:17:11.43 what are they going to be doing 00:17:11.46\00:17:12.96 for the time frame that they're there. 00:17:12.99\00:17:14.50 Are they going to be working in an OB-GYN helping the... 00:17:14.53\00:17:19.90 or helping the Pediatrician 00:17:19.93\00:17:21.40 or helping the Dentist, 00:17:21.44\00:17:22.87 how are we going to bring all of our supplies 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.84 so in some of the pictures you'll see 00:17:25.87\00:17:27.51 is that, we had to bring a lot of our supplies 00:17:27.54\00:17:30.68 from Connecticut and get it down into Haiti 00:17:30.71\00:17:33.78 because they didn't have those things there. 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.89 So, it was a lot of packing and planning 00:17:36.92\00:17:39.99 and organizing 00:17:40.02\00:17:41.36 and making sure that everything is organized 00:17:41.39\00:17:44.33 and that everything can get there safely and effectively. 00:17:44.36\00:17:47.00 Okay, so who is this? 00:17:47.03\00:17:48.36 So, this is one of our technicians 00:17:48.40\00:17:51.83 and what we do is we do an eye-glass clinic 00:17:51.87\00:17:55.07 where we actually use a machine or a computer 00:17:55.10\00:17:58.27 that can read the person's eyes 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.68 and then it translates it to a computer 00:18:00.71\00:18:02.44 and tells us exactly what type of glasses they need 00:18:02.48\00:18:05.01 to be able to correct their vision, 00:18:05.05\00:18:06.41 this picture here is obviously us in the Dental Clinic 00:18:06.45\00:18:10.12 like I said, on those chairs, 00:18:10.15\00:18:12.19 we actually have to bring all those chairs, 00:18:12.22\00:18:14.16 bring all the supplies... 00:18:14.19\00:18:15.52 bring all the dental instruments to Haiti 00:18:15.56\00:18:18.09 and set them out to get them organized... 00:18:18.13\00:18:20.86 and get them ready to go, 00:18:20.90\00:18:22.23 This is Dr. Salius, 00:18:22.26\00:18:23.60 one of our doctors that joins us in the Dental clinic, 00:18:23.63\00:18:27.00 and she is amazing, 00:18:27.04\00:18:28.37 she's done some incredible surgeries 00:18:28.40\00:18:30.44 on some of the people there that have needed surgeries, 00:18:30.47\00:18:32.87 and like I said, 00:18:32.91\00:18:34.38 you can see all the things that need to be supplied, 00:18:34.41\00:18:36.85 this is one of our doctors, a family-care physician 00:18:36.88\00:18:39.71 who is discussing probably high blood pressure... 00:18:39.75\00:18:42.58 is very prevalent in... in Haiti 00:18:42.62\00:18:45.19 so writing her prescription 00:18:45.22\00:18:46.79 just so that you know also, 00:18:46.82\00:18:48.29 we also bring a full-fledged pharmacy with us 00:18:48.32\00:18:50.73 so, we have all kinds of meds... 00:18:50.76\00:18:53.16 everything from medicines to other supplies that we bring. 00:18:53.19\00:18:57.23 These are our two Co-Founders... 00:18:57.27\00:18:58.93 Dr. Kellerman and my husband, Dr. Bryan Wilson 00:18:58.97\00:19:01.50 and then last year we worked with Bohard 00:19:01.54\00:19:03.87 which was an Organization 00:19:03.91\00:19:05.34 that's way up in the mountains in Haiti 00:19:05.37\00:19:06.88 and that's the gentleman that you there on the left, 00:19:06.91\00:19:09.44 Shelley: Bearded gentleman okay... 00:19:09.48\00:19:10.98 Kareen: Yes... and this our pharmacy, 00:19:11.01\00:19:12.41 you can see all of the different medical supplies 00:19:12.48\00:19:15.92 and we actually count out all the meds 00:19:15.95\00:19:17.65 like you would in a regular pharmacy 00:19:17.69\00:19:19.35 that we have here in America 00:19:19.39\00:19:20.72 and we have all kinds of supplies 00:19:20.76\00:19:22.72 from medicines to High Blood Pressure meds, 00:19:22.76\00:19:25.29 whatever we can bring. 00:19:25.33\00:19:26.66 This is another picture of our Dental Clinic 00:19:26.70\00:19:29.46 and we use all kinds of different supplies 00:19:29.50\00:19:32.37 to be able to bring care to everyone. 00:19:32.43\00:19:34.87 This is another one of our whole clinic... 00:19:34.90\00:19:38.37 you can see the table in the far left there... 00:19:38.41\00:19:40.98 is all covered with all kinds of dental supplies and tools, 00:19:41.01\00:19:44.45 sterilization... 00:19:44.48\00:19:45.88 we have sterilization process that we run through, 00:19:45.91\00:19:48.38 it's a very effective clinic. 00:19:48.42\00:19:50.12 Shelley: It's been a lot of logistics... 00:19:50.15\00:19:52.29 Kareen: Lot of logistics 00:19:52.32\00:19:53.72 so, on our last... one of our trips, 00:19:53.76\00:19:55.46 we were actually able to dig a well 00:19:55.52\00:19:57.19 so that there would be water 00:19:57.23\00:19:58.56 that could be supplied to this area 00:19:58.59\00:20:00.43 so, here you see the gentleman digging down... 00:20:00.46\00:20:03.33 I don't know the logistics but getting down in there 00:20:03.37\00:20:05.47 to make sure that they are able to touch water 00:20:05.50\00:20:07.44 and be able to pump it back up 00:20:07.47\00:20:08.80 so that they could have a well, yeah. 00:20:08.84\00:20:10.47 Oh, this picture... Kareen: And this is my lovely husband, Dr. Wilson, 00:20:29.72\00:20:32.16 posing with one of the kids, 00:20:32.19\00:20:33.76 we would blow up balloons 00:20:33.80\00:20:35.26 and give out toys to all the children 00:20:35.30\00:20:37.07 and... it's just a blessing to be able to share with them. 00:20:37.10\00:20:40.80 Shelley: Oh, that's precious, now, while you were there also, 00:20:40.84\00:20:44.81 you came across an orphanage that was in dire condition... 00:20:44.84\00:20:48.78 explain what was going on at this orphanage. 00:20:48.84\00:20:51.98 So, in 2014, we were on our mission trip 00:20:52.01\00:20:54.65 and we had a gentleman who approached us 00:20:54.68\00:20:57.25 and said that he had been caring for children, 00:20:57.29\00:21:00.76 it wasn't even an orphanage yet, 00:21:00.79\00:21:02.12 he just knew that he needed to take care of these children 00:21:02.16\00:21:05.03 and he had about 15 children of various ages with him 00:21:05.06\00:21:08.46 but he had run out of food 00:21:08.50\00:21:09.90 and because he was not an orphanage, 00:21:09.93\00:21:12.10 he didn't have any way of acquiring the food 00:21:12.13\00:21:14.44 and getting better living conditions for the children. 00:21:14.47\00:21:17.04 So, he approached us... we went... 00:21:17.07\00:21:19.91 we visited where he was and we... 00:21:19.94\00:21:22.74 it just broke your heart 00:21:22.81\00:21:24.15 to see the way these children were living, 00:21:24.18\00:21:26.88 they were living... 5... 6... kids to a bed... 00:21:26.92\00:21:29.62 and it wasn't even a real bed 00:21:29.65\00:21:30.99 you know, they had run out of food, 00:21:31.02\00:21:34.02 the squander... the dirt floors... 00:21:34.06\00:21:36.73 it just... they just needed help... 00:21:36.76\00:21:39.39 and we said, "You know what? 00:21:39.43\00:21:40.76 this is something that we can take on 00:21:40.80\00:21:42.66 so, we decided, right then and there, 00:21:42.70\00:21:44.70 we approached all the people that were on our mission trip 00:21:44.73\00:21:47.00 and we asked them to donate money 00:21:47.04\00:21:49.97 and before you know it, 00:21:50.01\00:21:51.34 we had raised over hundreds of dollars 00:21:51.37\00:21:53.48 to be able to provide food for them right away 00:21:53.51\00:21:56.58 and we decided to donate a lot of medication, 00:21:56.61\00:21:59.65 we had the children visit our clinic 00:21:59.68\00:22:01.52 so that they can be seen and be treated 00:22:01.55\00:22:03.35 and then, we just said, we are going to support you 00:22:03.39\00:22:06.19 so, since then, 00:22:06.22\00:22:07.56 we have actually moved them to a new Facility. 00:22:07.59\00:22:10.33 Shelley: Praise God. 00:22:10.36\00:22:11.86 We have re-done a whole building for them 00:22:11.89\00:22:14.73 so that each of them have their own beds, 00:22:14.76\00:22:17.50 they have a play area and they have a school. 00:22:17.53\00:22:20.34 So, not only are they able to go to school 00:22:20.37\00:22:23.14 but they are able to educate the children in the area 00:22:23.17\00:22:26.98 and they have over 125 kids that come into the compound 00:22:27.01\00:22:30.75 and are educated on the compound where the... 00:22:30.81\00:22:33.58 where the orphanage is 00:22:33.62\00:22:35.38 so now we're working on 00:22:35.42\00:22:37.15 getting them to have an actual status as an orphanage 00:22:37.19\00:22:40.39 so they'll be able to have aid from Haiti 00:22:40.42\00:22:42.32 but, we'll of course... we'll continue to support them. 00:22:42.36\00:22:44.43 And, you know, it's just so amazing to me 00:22:44.46\00:22:47.20 how... when Christ is in you and you see a need, 00:22:47.23\00:22:50.70 you want to meet that need 00:22:50.73\00:22:53.10 but these children went from 00:22:53.13\00:22:55.44 perhaps, not even having one meal a day 00:22:55.47\00:22:58.07 to now they get three squares a day 00:22:58.11\00:23:00.68 plus education and a hygienic area. 00:23:00.71\00:23:03.18 Kareen: Yeah. 00:23:03.21\00:23:04.58 When you're talking about the medical professionals, 00:23:04.61\00:23:07.65 your group has grown from 30 to... what was your last... 00:23:07.68\00:23:11.85 Yeah, so, I believe on our last mission trip 00:23:11.92\00:23:14.99 we had over 70 people that joined us. 00:23:15.02\00:23:16.79 Okay, so, that's so amazing 00:23:16.83\00:23:19.93 how quickly God is... is... growing this 00:23:19.96\00:23:23.26 but are they all Adventist Christians or they... 00:23:23.30\00:23:26.57 No, that's what I love about our mission trips 00:23:26.60\00:23:29.87 is that our last trip... 00:23:29.90\00:23:31.54 we had probably about 50... over 50 medical professionals 00:23:31.57\00:23:35.28 and then we had about a little over 20 construction crew 00:23:35.31\00:23:38.98 because we do do a lot of construction work now 00:23:39.01\00:23:41.18 and that is the beauty of our ministry, 00:23:41.25\00:23:43.28 is that... there are a lot of people 00:23:43.32\00:23:45.12 that aren't Seventh-day Adventists, 00:23:45.15\00:23:46.86 we have some people that aren't even Christian 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.46 and they join us on these trips and they say, 00:23:49.49\00:23:51.49 "This is the Christ that I want to... 00:23:51.53\00:23:53.93 that I'm dying to see... a Christ who gives... 00:23:53.96\00:23:57.33 a Christ who loves... a Christ who shares... 00:23:57.37\00:24:00.64 a Christ who will not let the underserved be neglected" 00:24:00.67\00:24:05.64 and that is what we're all about, 00:24:05.67\00:24:07.84 we're all about helping those people that need help 00:24:07.88\00:24:10.78 and in Haiti... 00:24:10.81\00:24:12.25 that is pretty much what you're going to see... 00:24:12.28\00:24:14.58 you're going to see a lot of people that need help 00:24:14.62\00:24:16.89 and so, not only are we ministering 00:24:16.95\00:24:18.89 to the people in Haiti, 00:24:18.92\00:24:20.26 but we're ministering to a lot of the people 00:24:20.29\00:24:21.96 that join us on the trip 00:24:21.99\00:24:23.32 because they are so excited to see the passion of Christianity, 00:24:23.36\00:24:27.30 the passion of what Christ wanted us to do. 00:24:27.33\00:24:29.23 Amen and amen... and you know it's just... 00:24:29.26\00:24:31.13 it's amazing to me that every time... 00:24:31.17\00:24:33.57 God just has a magic formula... 00:24:33.60\00:24:37.37 and I don't want to use the word "magic" 00:24:37.41\00:24:38.74 but the blessing of the Lord is when you go somewhere 00:24:38.77\00:24:43.08 to be a blessing to someone else... 00:24:43.11\00:24:45.41 when God sends you out, 00:24:45.45\00:24:46.78 He always gives you a double portion of blessing in return. 00:24:46.82\00:24:51.09 Have you seen any... 00:24:51.12\00:24:53.12 can you tell any of the miracle stories that you've seen. 00:24:53.15\00:24:56.46 Oh, oh... miracles beyond miracles... 00:24:56.49\00:24:59.16 you have to realize that we're working with a lot of logistics 00:24:59.19\00:25:03.97 so, like we were talking earlier about logistics... 00:25:04.00\00:25:06.43 the miracles in logistics is... I... I... 00:25:06.50\00:25:10.21 every year, I always say to myself 00:25:10.24\00:25:12.17 "this is never going to work 00:25:12.21\00:25:13.54 there's no way we're going to get all these things into Haiti 00:25:13.58\00:25:15.94 and we're not going to be able to... " 00:25:15.98\00:25:17.68 Shelley: Through Customs... Kareen: Through Customs 00:25:17.71\00:25:19.05 and every year it works... 00:25:19.08\00:25:21.38 I can tell you one story where we were at American Airlines 00:25:21.45\00:25:24.72 and we were flying with all of our bins... 00:25:24.75\00:25:26.76 I wish we had a picture of all the bins that we bring, 00:25:26.79\00:25:28.79 we bring these huge heavy-duty bins 00:25:28.82\00:25:30.76 and every year, 00:25:30.79\00:25:32.16 we always are over-boarded with too many things 00:25:32.19\00:25:35.16 but we want to make sure it gets there 00:25:35.20\00:25:37.07 and I remember one year that one of the agents said, 00:25:37.10\00:25:40.50 "There's no way... " 00:25:40.54\00:25:41.87 that "we're not going to allow this to go through" 00:25:41.90\00:25:43.41 and we said, "You know what? Let's just step back and pray" 00:25:43.44\00:25:46.71 and we prayed about it... we prayed about it 00:25:46.74\00:25:48.58 and there was a... there was a... 00:25:48.64\00:25:50.71 I guess it would be a "shift change" 00:25:50.75\00:25:52.78 and the next lady that came in, I approached her again 00:25:52.81\00:25:57.42 and I said, "We're a mission group, 00:25:57.45\00:25:59.62 we just want to bring these things, 00:25:59.65\00:26:01.79 we're helping somebody" 00:26:01.82\00:26:03.16 and someone... another passenger had just yelled at her 00:26:03.19\00:26:06.59 and she screamed at her and I think... 00:26:06.63\00:26:08.33 "this poor lady is under pressure, 00:26:08.36\00:26:10.17 she is not going to listen to me" 00:26:10.20\00:26:11.90 and she turned to me and in the sweetest voice 00:26:11.93\00:26:14.70 and she said, "Let's see what we can do" 00:26:14.74\00:26:17.17 is that, I wish that a lot of people would realize 00:26:17.21\00:26:19.94 that they can get much more done with honey than with flies 00:26:19.97\00:26:23.04 you know, 00:26:23.08\00:26:24.41 and she turned to us and she said, 00:26:24.45\00:26:26.35 "Let me go talk to my Supervisor" 00:26:26.38\00:26:28.35 and did you know that that Supervisor 00:26:28.38\00:26:30.35 was from Haiti herself 00:26:30.39\00:26:31.72 and she allowed everything to go through 00:26:31.75\00:26:33.86 and she didn't even charge us. 00:26:33.89\00:26:35.76 Shelley: Praise the Lord. 00:26:35.79\00:26:37.26 Kareen: That was the hard part, I was like, 00:26:37.29\00:26:38.63 "If you charge us, I'll be happy" 00:26:38.66\00:26:40.00 but she didn't even charge us, she said, 00:26:40.03\00:26:42.50 "Just let it go through... let it go through. " 00:26:42.53\00:26:44.27 When we're in clinics in Haiti, 00:26:44.33\00:26:46.87 there are plenty of times when people come to the clinics 00:26:46.90\00:26:49.80 and we see a lot of children who have been neglected 00:26:49.84\00:26:53.78 who have wounds and who need special healing 00:26:53.84\00:26:57.41 and we have seen... 00:26:57.45\00:26:58.78 they come back to the clinic a few days later 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.75 and they're better, they're healthier, 00:27:00.78\00:27:03.05 just being able to give them the medication that they needed 00:27:03.08\00:27:06.55 and us being able to have it there for them is amazing. 00:27:06.59\00:27:09.72 I remember one time in a dental clinic 00:27:09.76\00:27:12.16 we saw a young lady who came to the clinic 00:27:12.19\00:27:16.03 and her hand was over her mouth like this 00:27:16.06\00:27:18.27 and we were like, "What's going on here?" 00:27:18.30\00:27:20.47 and she sat down in a chair 00:27:20.50\00:27:22.90 and what had happened was... is that 00:27:22.94\00:27:25.14 she had basically a double row of teeth, 00:27:25.17\00:27:27.44 she had never lost her primary teeth 00:27:27.48\00:27:29.68 but she had grown in her adult teeth into that space, 00:27:29.74\00:27:33.85 and she was very embarrassed about it, 00:27:33.88\00:27:37.05 and she was very ashamed by it 00:27:37.09\00:27:39.25 and one of the doctors says, 00:27:39.29\00:27:40.89 "You know, we can help her" 00:27:40.92\00:27:42.46 so we found her mother to ask for permission to do that 00:27:42.49\00:27:45.99 and as I sat down to do my perio therapy on my patient 00:27:46.03\00:27:49.46 I said, "Oh my goodness, what is this?" 00:27:49.50\00:27:52.33 And it was the same situation, they were twins! 00:27:52.37\00:27:55.30 and the same thing had happened 00:27:55.34\00:27:57.41 so that day we were able to do dental surgery 00:27:57.44\00:28:00.04 on both girls... and be able to give them their smiles back 00:28:00.08\00:28:03.08 and to this day I just remember 00:28:03.11\00:28:05.45 the smiles on their faces afterwards 00:28:05.48\00:28:07.82 because they would have normally had to go through life 00:28:07.88\00:28:10.89 with that embarrassment and now they were... 00:28:10.92\00:28:13.22 they were beautiful again. 00:28:13.25\00:28:14.59 Shelley: Glory to God... glory to God. 00:28:14.62\00:28:16.39 So, the Lord has really blessed this Bethesda Medical Mission 00:28:16.42\00:28:21.40 as it has gone to Haiti for the last five years in a row 00:28:21.43\00:28:24.90 but recently, Pastor Herrera from Connecticut 00:28:24.93\00:28:30.11 came to you with a new plan, 00:28:30.14\00:28:34.61 tell us about that. 00:28:34.64\00:28:36.18 So, we had always gone to Haiti everywhere... every year 00:28:36.21\00:28:39.01 and we were planning on returning to Haiti this year 00:28:39.05\00:28:41.85 but after the Hurricane in Puerto Rico, 00:28:41.88\00:28:44.95 Pastor Herrera approached our Organization 00:28:44.99\00:28:47.96 and said that what you are doing in Haiti 00:28:48.02\00:28:50.93 would very much be of benefit to what's going on in Puerto Rico 00:28:50.96\00:28:54.30 and because of the hurricane, a lot of homes were damaged 00:28:54.33\00:28:57.13 and there was a lot of help... 00:28:57.17\00:28:58.87 the construction crew that we had normally used in Haiti 00:28:58.90\00:29:02.44 would have been a great benefit in Puerto Rico 00:29:02.47\00:29:05.34 so, this year, we have decided 00:29:05.37\00:29:07.28 to take Bethesda Medical into Puerto Rico 00:29:07.31\00:29:10.35 and repair some homes that are going to be damaged 00:29:10.38\00:29:14.15 and also, to do some Health Fairs 00:29:14.18\00:29:16.48 and to do some health clinics in Puerto Rico 00:29:16.52\00:29:20.02 to help the people of Puerto Rico. 00:29:20.06\00:29:21.52 We have a tendency in the United States 00:29:21.56\00:29:26.76 that... I just say we've got the attention span of a humming bird 00:29:26.80\00:29:32.20 because whatever is on the news is what you feel like, 00:29:32.23\00:29:37.07 is going on but there is still... 00:29:37.11\00:29:39.34 there is so much suffering in Puerto Rico, it's not over. 00:29:39.37\00:29:42.98 Yes, and that's what our plan was... is that... 00:29:43.01\00:29:45.95 you know, you're right, 00:29:46.01\00:29:47.42 after a few months, it dies down 00:29:47.48\00:29:49.55 and people forget about the need that's going on 00:29:49.58\00:29:52.05 but there are many people that are still devastated... 00:29:52.09\00:29:54.42 just even to have clean water... to have their homes repaired... 00:29:54.46\00:29:59.16 to receive medical and dental attention 00:29:59.19\00:30:02.00 those kinds of things are still very much needed in Puerto Rico 00:30:02.03\00:30:04.80 so, I said, "Summer of 2018, we will be going there. " 00:30:04.83\00:30:09.50 Praise God, so, the... 00:30:09.57\00:30:11.87 Pastor Herrera, I know I heard something mentioned 00:30:11.91\00:30:14.81 or read something mentioned that he has an association with 00:30:14.84\00:30:20.02 Hay esperanza para Puerto Rico 00:30:20.05\00:30:23.65 which means, "There is hope for Puerto Rico" 00:30:23.69\00:30:25.85 and a lot of people there really were close to losing hope 00:30:25.89\00:30:30.59 or have lost hope... we have some friends who live there 00:30:30.63\00:30:35.26 and they said the suicide rate is at... 00:30:35.30\00:30:37.67 there are people who feel like 00:30:37.70\00:30:39.13 life would never get back to normal 00:30:39.20\00:30:40.77 so, explain what... do you know much about that group 00:30:40.80\00:30:44.91 or... can you give us... 00:30:44.94\00:30:46.41 I know Pastor Herrera was supposed to be with us today. 00:30:46.47\00:30:49.11 Yeah, so Pastor Herrera was supposed to be with us 00:30:49.14\00:30:51.35 to explain a little bit more about that 00:30:51.41\00:30:53.18 but from what he had explained to us is that... 00:30:53.21\00:30:56.28 there was a lot of devastation that had happened in Puerto Rico 00:30:56.32\00:30:59.89 and that a lot of things that we heard here in America 00:30:59.95\00:31:02.86 that things were much better and that things would get... 00:31:02.89\00:31:05.79 were simply not accurate... 00:31:05.83\00:31:07.96 that there were a lot of people that were still suffering 00:31:08.00\00:31:10.33 there were a lot of people that still were without their homes 00:31:10.37\00:31:13.17 that we still had a lot of issues going on 00:31:13.20\00:31:15.60 and that we needed to address that 00:31:15.64\00:31:17.51 and we needed to still send people into Puerto Rico to help 00:31:17.54\00:31:21.34 so, that would be my appeal today 00:31:21.38\00:31:23.21 is that, everybody would understand 00:31:23.24\00:31:25.01 that there are still a lot of people that are suffering... 00:31:25.05\00:31:27.48 they need financial... emotional... spiritual help 00:31:27.52\00:31:31.59 to go into Puerto Rico and be able to bless the people 00:31:31.62\00:31:35.12 that are going on there... that are still suffering there 00:31:35.16\00:31:38.59 so, I do hope that people will still realize 00:31:38.63\00:31:40.80 that we still need to be there, 00:31:40.83\00:31:42.16 we still need to be on the ground. 00:31:42.20\00:31:44.63 Amen, so, when you are not on a... 00:31:44.67\00:31:47.17 how many mission trips have you gone on? 00:31:47.20\00:31:48.74 Personally, I have been on 00:31:48.80\00:31:51.97 probably about 9 or 10 mission trips. 00:31:52.01\00:31:55.11 Okay and have you taken your daughters yet? 00:31:55.14\00:31:57.51 No, I haven't so this is the first year 00:31:57.55\00:31:59.81 that my daughters will be going 00:31:59.85\00:32:01.32 on a mission trip so exciting... 00:32:01.35\00:32:02.78 Shelley: How old are they? 00:32:02.82\00:32:04.15 My daughters are 10 and 12. 00:32:04.19\00:32:05.52 Shelley: Okay. " 00:35:43.71\00:35:46.27 Tell us a little... kind of expound on that a little. 00:35:46.34\00:35:49.44 Well, we have had some people... 00:35:49.48\00:35:51.81 believe me, we've had not... like I said, 00:35:51.85\00:35:54.58 people that are not really Christian... 00:35:54.62\00:35:57.29 we've even had one person who was Buddhist that came with us 00:35:57.32\00:36:01.22 and she had always... she had worked with us in the past 00:36:01.26\00:36:05.09 but she had never really been able 00:36:05.13\00:36:06.66 to see what Christianity was all about 00:36:06.70\00:36:09.16 and she said that this... 00:36:09.20\00:36:10.83 "I could... I could understand this type of Christianity" 00:36:10.87\00:36:14.47 and even though... and you know that God sows seeds 00:36:14.50\00:36:18.31 you never know what's going on in her heart, 00:36:18.37\00:36:20.11 I believe that it changed her, 00:36:20.14\00:36:21.64 it changed her attitude to what Christianity could be 00:36:21.68\00:36:25.68 and how serving God can bless other people, 00:36:25.71\00:36:28.58 we've had people that are not Seventh-day Adventists 00:36:28.62\00:36:31.35 that say... they want to learn more 00:36:31.39\00:36:32.75 about the Seventh-day Adventist Church... 00:36:32.79\00:36:34.19 they want to know more 00:36:34.22\00:36:35.59 about how Maranatha and other aid groups 00:36:35.62\00:36:38.59 are going into other countries to help 00:36:38.63\00:36:41.33 so, I think that it has definitely changed them 00:36:41.36\00:36:43.97 and we've had a lot of people attend church services 00:36:44.00\00:36:46.74 when we were in Haiti too 00:36:46.77\00:36:48.10 and there's no requirement for you to have to do that 00:36:48.14\00:36:50.97 when you're on your mission trips 00:36:51.01\00:36:52.34 but a lot of the people say, 00:36:52.37\00:36:53.71 "Yes, I want to see what it's all about... 00:36:53.78\00:36:55.41 I want to see how you worship your God" 00:36:55.44\00:36:57.98 and they are moved and blessed by that too 00:36:58.01\00:36:59.48 so they love it, yeah. 00:36:59.51\00:37:00.85 Well I think you brought a couple of videos 00:37:00.88\00:37:02.48 and we'd like to show those, the first one is: 00:37:02.55\00:37:04.89 your husband and another gentleman who are speaking 00:37:04.92\00:37:08.59 and these are the two... 00:37:08.62\00:37:10.03 there were four Co-Founders... you and your husband 00:37:10.06\00:37:13.13 and then this other doctor and his wife. 00:37:13.16\00:37:15.26 Yeah, so Dr. Kellerman and my husband 00:37:15.30\00:37:17.30 are what you're going to see in this one video
