So tell us about that? 00:09:21.39\00:09:23.36 When I was 15, and I didn't have a piano. 00:09:23.39\00:09:25.93 I had a competition, 00:09:25.96\00:09:27.40 and I couldn't practice for a week, 00:09:27.46\00:09:31.17 and I couldn't find a piano. 00:09:31.20\00:09:33.00 So my mom taught me 00:09:33.03\00:09:34.64 how to pray and depending on God. 00:09:34.67\00:09:36.54 And we just said, "Okay, we're going to pray, 00:09:36.57\00:09:38.54 I memorize all the music, 00:09:38.57\00:09:40.11 and I'm going to the competition 00:09:40.18\00:09:42.04 without touching the piano." 00:09:42.08\00:09:43.45 I didn't have the chance to touch the piano, 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.68 I went, and I won the first place. 00:09:45.71\00:09:48.75 You're kidding. 00:09:48.78\00:09:50.12 Yes, I could feel how God was moving my fingers. 00:09:50.19\00:09:54.29 And everybody was, not everybody, 00:09:54.32\00:09:57.26 but most of the people, audience, they were crying 00:09:57.33\00:10:00.03 because they were touched by my music. 00:10:00.10\00:10:03.20 And I had another competition when I was 12 00:10:03.23\00:10:07.00 that really touched my heart. 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.84 And it was my first competition, 00:10:08.87\00:10:10.57 piano competition, but it was on Sabbath 00:10:10.61\00:10:13.64 and what happened there was that... 00:10:13.68\00:10:18.45 It was a national competition from the whole country 00:10:18.48\00:10:21.52 and the judges were international. 00:10:21.55\00:10:24.62 So, but the academy, the school that I went, 00:10:24.65\00:10:28.29 they wanted to go to the competition so bad. 00:10:28.32\00:10:32.03 And they support us so much, 00:10:32.06\00:10:34.30 but we said no because of the Sabbath. 00:10:34.30\00:10:37.10 So they were trying and trying and my teacher, piano teacher, 00:10:37.13\00:10:40.60 he got the idea 00:10:40.67\00:10:42.90 to talk to one of the judges about it 00:10:42.94\00:10:45.87 to see if they could wait 00:10:45.91\00:10:48.04 until sunset for us to play. 00:10:48.08\00:10:51.48 It was the whole day competition 00:10:51.51\00:10:54.52 and so he tried that out, and it came out well. 00:10:54.55\00:10:58.05 So the judge, he said, "You know, 00:10:58.09\00:11:01.09 there is a Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.86 at the orchestra in Venezuela 00:11:02.89\00:11:04.33 that we give him the Sabbath. 00:11:04.36\00:11:07.60 So we are going to wait for them." 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.70 So they waited for us... So they held the competition... 00:11:09.73\00:11:12.27 After the sunset and we... 00:11:12.30\00:11:15.44 I said we because 00:11:15.47\00:11:17.74 one of my best friends from Dominican Republic, 00:11:17.77\00:11:19.87 she was another pianist, 00:11:19.91\00:11:21.94 and she was a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:11:21.98\00:11:23.61 and she was with me at the competition. 00:11:23.65\00:11:25.85 So we went to the competition, we played 00:11:25.88\00:11:28.02 and we got the first places right there. 00:11:28.05\00:11:31.92 You and your friend? Yes. 00:11:31.95\00:11:33.42 Wow. 00:11:33.46\00:11:34.79 They held the whole competition, 00:11:34.82\00:11:36.16 here you participated 00:11:36.19\00:11:37.53 after the sun went down Sabbath night. 00:11:37.56\00:11:39.19 And you got first place 00:11:39.23\00:11:40.56 and all of this is without a piano at home. 00:11:40.60\00:11:42.90 Yes, without a piano. 00:11:42.93\00:11:44.27 All of this is practicing on that. 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.03 That's just incredible, you know, wow. 00:11:46.07\00:11:49.30 To me that's dedication, Martha, 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.17 to me that's a passion for your instrument 00:11:51.21\00:11:53.31 even if you're not physically being able to play, 00:11:53.34\00:11:56.28 but you're doing it and you're still practicing 00:11:56.31\00:11:58.68 and it's trust in God. 00:11:58.71\00:12:00.12 Amen. 00:12:00.15\00:12:01.48 I've seen the miracle of what God did in your life. 00:12:01.52\00:12:03.89 Yes. 00:12:03.92\00:12:05.25 And I know you played several songs for us 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.66 and right now what we want to do is, 00:12:07.69\00:12:09.22 we want to go to one of those songs. 00:12:09.26\00:12:11.63 We want to let you hear Martha. 00:12:11.66\00:12:14.30 And this is the girl who grew up 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.80 without that piano at home 00:12:15.83\00:12:17.33 and this is what God is doing in her life. 00:12:17.37\00:12:20.14 So let's listen to that now, The Old Rugged Cross. 00:12:20.20\00:12:23.51 Amen. 00:16:40.00\00:16:41.30 What a beautiful song, The Old Rugged Cross. 00:16:41.33\00:16:44.03 And what an incredible job, Martha. 00:16:44.07\00:16:45.73 To think where God brought you from, 00:16:45.77\00:16:47.67 you know, playing there 00:16:47.70\00:16:49.04 and then to see the arrangements 00:16:49.07\00:16:51.04 that He's led you to create. 00:16:51.07\00:16:52.57 So how do you come up with your arrangements? 00:16:52.61\00:16:55.14 When I was 10 years old, I used to accompany the church 00:16:55.18\00:17:00.45 and with the hymns and the choir. 00:17:00.48\00:17:03.25 And this idea came to my brain to do something different, 00:17:03.28\00:17:07.89 more elaborated, 00:17:07.92\00:17:09.59 and I started just adding things to the hymns. 00:17:09.62\00:17:14.00 And I could listen the whole, 00:17:14.03\00:17:16.90 actually, piece made differently. 00:17:16.97\00:17:19.80 So I started developing, you know, those arrangement, 00:17:19.83\00:17:25.01 and I put myself of a goal to do, 00:17:25.04\00:17:29.84 how much I could do, how many... 00:17:29.88\00:17:32.41 And sometimes I could go back and elaborate more so I think, 00:17:32.45\00:17:38.65 but sometimes I just sit at the piano 00:17:38.69\00:17:41.59 and it just came naturally out. 00:17:41.62\00:17:43.96 Wow. 00:17:44.03\00:17:45.36 So your arrangements were all made 00:17:45.39\00:17:46.73 when you were able to go to a piano 00:17:46.76\00:17:48.06 and actually played a piano 00:17:48.10\00:17:49.43 or did you make them just up in your head 00:17:49.46\00:17:51.33 and then played it out or how did that work? 00:17:51.37\00:17:54.97 First, yes, I heard it. Yeah, wow. 00:22:48.96\00:22:50.90 I never knew who was, 00:22:50.93\00:22:52.77 but I know God saved us from death. 00:22:52.80\00:22:55.14 Amen. 00:22:55.17\00:22:56.50 And God saved you for a purpose, you know, 00:22:56.54\00:22:58.24 because God's using you, 00:22:58.27\00:22:59.74 and we will get to that 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.18 here in the latter part of the program, 00:23:01.21\00:23:02.81 but God's using you, you know, 00:23:02.84\00:23:04.31 to speak and to share this gift of music 00:23:04.35\00:23:08.28 with the world. 00:23:08.32\00:23:09.65 And so, that's an incredible purpose 00:23:09.68\00:23:11.49 that He saved you for. 00:23:11.52\00:23:12.85 So tell us about how you got involved in playing the harp? 00:23:12.89\00:23:15.46 When I was 19 years old, 00:23:15.49\00:23:17.53 I finished my piano studies in Dominican Republic. 00:23:17.56\00:23:21.83 And then I started reading, 00:23:21.86\00:23:23.77 reading more and more the Bible. 00:23:23.83\00:23:25.23 And I got this picture from the Bible, 00:23:25.27\00:23:29.27 Revelation of old, 00:23:29.30\00:23:30.67 the angels playing the harp. 00:23:30.71\00:23:33.27 And I wanted to do something like that, 00:23:33.34\00:23:35.18 and I felt really strong a call from God 00:23:35.21\00:23:38.75 to play that instrument. 00:23:38.78\00:23:40.18 For a reason, it was very insistent in my mind 00:23:40.22\00:23:43.28 so I started, you know, looking 00:23:43.35\00:23:45.49 if there was any lessons or any teacher around, 00:23:45.52\00:23:49.56 and I discovered 00:23:49.59\00:23:50.93 when I went to the conservatory of music 00:23:50.96\00:23:52.59 that they didn't have program 00:23:52.63\00:23:55.13 for harp lessons for 10 years. 00:23:55.16\00:23:58.23 So that exact year that I went, 00:23:58.27\00:24:01.70 there was a teacher that show up. 00:24:01.74\00:24:03.07 They started it again after 10 years. 00:24:03.10\00:24:04.74 Yeah, after 10 years. 00:24:04.77\00:24:06.17 So I started playing the harp 00:24:06.21\00:24:08.44 and just playing that instrument 00:24:08.48\00:24:10.95 started opening doors incredibly. 00:24:10.98\00:24:14.35 So the news just run around and I got an invitation 00:24:14.38\00:24:18.02 from the embassy United States in Dominican Republic to play. 00:24:18.05\00:24:22.76 Okay, so I think we have some pictures. 00:24:22.79\00:24:24.93 Yeah. 00:24:24.96\00:24:26.29 Let's put up some of those pictures here we have. 00:24:26.33\00:24:27.96 Picture of you playing the harp I think. 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.80 Yes. Oh, praise the Lord. 00:25:17.35\00:25:19.38 When they discovered that I was studying harp and piano, 00:25:19.41\00:25:24.29 they invited me to do a double concert, 00:25:24.32\00:25:27.69 and that was an amazing experience. 00:25:27.72\00:25:29.62 And who was that group of people 00:25:29.66\00:25:30.99 we're just looking at there? 00:25:31.03\00:25:32.36 This is a very special group. 00:25:32.39\00:25:35.66 This is an Archipelago choir from the University 00:25:35.70\00:25:39.77 I went to do my master degree in piano and harp. 00:25:39.80\00:25:42.80 So you have your undergraduate degree 00:25:42.84\00:25:45.31 in piano performance. 00:25:45.34\00:25:46.68 And then master's degree in piano 00:25:46.74\00:25:48.64 like a double master's 00:25:48.68\00:25:50.01 in both piano and harp performance. 00:25:50.05\00:25:52.28 I'm starting to feel intimidated 00:25:52.31\00:25:53.68 sitting here, you know. 00:25:53.72\00:25:56.22 No, but that's the beautiful thing is 00:25:56.25\00:25:57.85 'cause you serve with humility. 00:25:57.89\00:25:59.22 And praise the Lord for that. Amen. 00:25:59.25\00:26:00.89 So this is the Archipelago group there. 00:26:00.92\00:26:03.79 And what song were they singing? 00:26:03.86\00:26:05.19 Actually they were singing right there at that moment 00:26:05.23\00:26:08.43 for a very well known group The King's Singers. 00:26:08.46\00:26:12.90 Okay. 00:26:12.93\00:26:14.37 My own composition. 00:26:14.40\00:26:17.67 The director of that choir Dr. King, 00:26:17.71\00:26:20.48 he asked me to write a song for the choir, 00:26:20.51\00:26:25.41 and I said myself, 00:26:25.45\00:26:27.98 "Okay, this opportunity is to glorify God." 00:26:28.02\00:26:30.99 So I choose Psalm 24, 00:26:31.02\00:26:33.69 and I put music to that Psalm 00:26:33.76\00:26:37.43 and I gave it to the director. 00:26:37.46\00:26:41.03 When he saw that masterpiece, 00:26:41.06\00:26:42.83 he said, 00:26:42.86\00:26:44.50 "Wow, we're going to choose this piece 00:26:44.53\00:26:46.57 to perform in front of this special group." 00:26:46.60\00:26:50.27 The King's Singers that they were giving us 00:26:50.31\00:26:52.91 a master class so my piece was performed. 00:26:52.94\00:26:56.71 And it was a beautiful testimony 00:26:56.75\00:26:58.91 because when I was composing that 00:26:58.95\00:27:00.95 I asked the Lord, 00:27:00.98\00:27:02.58 "Lord, that every note will touch everybody 00:27:02.62\00:27:05.55 that is going to sing this psalm." 00:27:05.59\00:27:08.12 And it was amazing to see how after we... 00:27:08.16\00:27:11.59 Every time we were singing, 00:27:11.63\00:27:14.10 members from the choir came to me 00:27:14.13\00:27:16.23 saying that they felt God's presence. 00:27:16.26\00:27:19.00 They felt like Jesus was right there 00:27:19.03\00:27:21.60 next to them singing. 00:27:21.64\00:27:23.34 And that was their favorite piece 00:27:23.41\00:27:26.31 from the whole repertoire. 00:27:26.34\00:27:28.24 And I was like, 00:27:28.28\00:27:29.61 "Wow, the Lord really 00:27:29.64\00:27:32.51 fulfilled the purpose of these." 00:27:32.55\00:27:34.32 That's right. 00:27:34.35\00:27:35.68 I mean, that's the words of scripture 00:27:35.72\00:27:37.09 and then putting that to music. 00:27:37.12\00:27:38.55 Let's go to another song here 00:27:38.59\00:27:40.56 from Martha, this is My Jesus, 00:27:40.59\00:27:42.96 I Love Thee. 00:27:42.99\00:27:44.33 Amen. 00:32:58.01\00:32:59.34 We would say at 3ABN, that's a two-hander. 00:32:59.37\00:33:01.61 Praise the Lord. 00:33:01.64\00:33:02.98 What an incredible piece. 00:33:03.01\00:33:04.85 Now I would imagine you practice a great deal, 00:33:04.88\00:33:07.22 is that correct? 00:33:07.25\00:33:08.58 Yes. 00:33:08.62\00:33:09.95 So in all this practice, 00:33:09.98\00:33:11.32 there's a chance of getting injured. 00:33:11.35\00:33:12.69 Yes. 00:33:12.72\00:33:14.06 Did you get injured? 00:33:14.09\00:33:15.42 Yes, well, two years ago, almost three years ago 00:33:15.46\00:33:19.09 I injured my shoulder. 00:33:19.13\00:33:20.80 And actually it was... Practicing? 00:33:20.83\00:33:22.26 Not practicing. Oh, it wasn't practicing. 00:33:22.30\00:33:24.37 Actually I was lifting up a very heavy suitcase. 00:33:24.40\00:33:28.04 Okay. 00:33:28.07\00:33:29.40 And it turned out that when I was 17, 00:33:29.44\00:33:31.37 I was a tennis player 00:33:31.41\00:33:33.07 so I injured my shoulder back then, 00:33:33.11\00:33:35.91 but I never paid attention, 00:33:35.94\00:33:37.85 and I was for two months without playing the piano. 00:33:37.88\00:33:43.39 So the injury wasn't caused by the piano 00:33:43.45\00:33:45.49 or playing the piano 00:33:45.52\00:33:46.86 but, yeah, you had to stop from playing. 00:33:46.92\00:33:48.26 Yes. Okay. 00:33:48.29\00:33:49.62 I had to stop playing 00:33:49.66\00:33:50.99 and then three years ago basically, I was moving 00:33:51.03\00:33:54.63 and I just lift up this very heavy suitcase, 00:33:54.66\00:33:57.67 and I felt something in my shoulder. 00:33:57.70\00:33:59.60 And since then never was the same. 00:33:59.63\00:34:02.40 So I stayed for two years doing physical therapies, 00:34:02.44\00:34:06.24 trying to find out what was the problem 00:34:06.27\00:34:08.44 and it took long way 00:34:08.48\00:34:11.35 to find what was the problem. 00:34:11.38\00:34:13.11 So under a lot of pain for two years 00:34:13.15\00:34:16.38 and, you know, trying to figure out 00:34:16.42\00:34:18.75 what was wrong. 00:34:18.79\00:34:20.16 And finally, they could determine 00:34:20.19\00:34:22.79 that was an injury from those past years, 00:34:22.82\00:34:25.66 I never was fit well enough. 00:34:25.69\00:34:28.96 So you're someone who is passionate about the piano, 00:34:29.00\00:34:31.47 and you love it, and here you can't play that. 00:34:31.50\00:34:34.24 So what did that do with your journey with God? 00:34:34.27\00:34:37.27 That was a moment of consecration to God. 00:34:37.31\00:34:42.04 And I started praising God, you know, 00:34:42.08\00:34:45.51 even in the middle of the pain. 00:34:45.55\00:34:47.18 And I got so close to God more than ever. 00:34:47.22\00:34:53.42 And my days, my nights that I was in a lot of pain, 00:34:53.46\00:34:57.76 I used to compose music. 00:34:57.79\00:35:00.73 And I laid on God's Word so much. 00:35:00.76\00:35:04.97 Like I started reading the Word of God 00:35:05.00\00:35:07.24 and composing those verses from the Bible, 00:35:07.27\00:35:09.60 I started putting music to them. 00:35:09.64\00:35:11.47 So I started composing more and more and more 00:35:11.51\00:35:13.68 about my experience what I was going through 00:35:13.71\00:35:16.34 and the trust that I wanted to have in God. 00:35:16.38\00:35:18.51 But one day I started saying, "Why me? 00:35:18.55\00:35:21.68 Because I gave You it all." 00:35:21.72\00:35:23.42 And God came to my mind speaking to me through His Word 00:35:23.49\00:35:28.29 and other things that, 00:35:28.32\00:35:30.13 "You know, it doesn't matter if you don't play again, 00:35:30.16\00:35:33.19 you're still My child, and you're still special." 00:35:33.23\00:35:36.26 When I understood that, 00:35:36.30\00:35:37.90 that changed my mind, my heart. 00:35:37.93\00:35:41.54 I started recovering spiritually, 00:35:41.57\00:35:44.17 emotionally, physically. 00:35:44.21\00:35:46.94 And I realized that I could do other things for God. 00:35:46.98\00:35:50.51 Yes.
