I want to spend my life 00:00:01.56\00:00:07.47 Mending broken people 00:00:07.50\00:00:12.27 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.31\00:00:18.61 Removing pain 00:00:18.65\00:00:23.69 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.72\00:00:29.89 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.92\00:00:34.50 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.53\00:00:40.14 Mending broken people 00:00:40.17\00:00:45.67 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.71\00:00:51.25 Mending broken people 00:00:51.28\00:00:55.35 Hello and welcome to 3ABN Today. 00:01:09.53\00:01:11.60 My name is CA Murray, and allow me once again 00:01:11.63\00:01:13.54 to thank you for sharing 00:01:13.57\00:01:15.40 just a little of your no doubt busy day with us. 00:01:15.44\00:01:18.61 So thank you for your love, your prayers, your support 00:01:18.64\00:01:20.58 of Three Angels Broadcasting Network 00:01:20.61\00:01:22.71 these 30 plus years as together we seek 00:01:22.74\00:01:25.85 to lift up the name of Jesus, to encourage one another 00:01:25.88\00:01:29.48 in the faith and warn the world 00:01:29.52\00:01:31.09 that Christ is coming very, very soon. 00:01:31.12\00:01:32.95 Very excited today because of my guests, 00:01:32.99\00:01:34.96 and the ministry that we're going to talk about, 00:01:34.99\00:01:38.43 so we want you to kind of draw close 00:01:38.46\00:01:40.63 because this is a heartwarming ministry. 00:01:40.66\00:01:42.96 This is a ministry that goes around the world, 00:01:43.00\00:01:46.07 and it's expanding and growing. 00:01:46.10\00:01:48.60 And when you see my two guests... 00:01:48.64\00:01:54.54 I was told that the ministry is about 00:01:54.58\00:01:56.98 13, 14 years old so I had to recalculate 00:01:57.01\00:02:00.12 because they both look so young, 00:02:00.15\00:02:01.52 they don't look much older than 13 or 14, but they are. 00:02:01.55\00:02:05.22 And so we had a little fun with that. 00:02:05.25\00:02:07.82 But the ministry is called Christalis, Christalis, 00:02:07.86\00:02:11.13 and my guests are Shalini David, 00:02:11.16\00:02:14.50 who is the president and CEO and Renee Titus. 00:02:14.53\00:02:18.73 Renee was volunteer, 00:02:18.77\00:02:22.07 now marketing director so praise the Lord. 00:02:22.10\00:02:24.87 So, and kind of just recently in that position. 00:02:24.91\00:02:27.78 Good to have you guys here. Thank you for having us. 00:02:27.81\00:02:30.11 Before we go to our music, I'm going to hit you, you know, 00:02:30.15\00:02:33.95 with the punch line first. 00:02:33.98\00:02:35.32 What does Christalis mean, where did that name come from? 00:02:35.35\00:02:37.79 Sure. 00:02:37.82\00:02:39.15 We are on the word the name Christalis 00:02:39.19\00:02:40.79 from the word chrysalis which is a transformation 00:02:40.82\00:02:42.92 of a caterpillar to butterfly. 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.69 So we just redid the letters to put the word Christ in there 00:02:44.73\00:02:49.50 to signify a transformation through Christ. 00:02:49.53\00:02:51.83 We hope that every life we touch 00:02:51.87\00:02:53.94 we show them the love of Christ. 00:02:53.97\00:02:55.30 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:02:55.34\00:02:57.14 That come out of your little head 00:02:57.17\00:02:58.51 or a group of people? 00:02:58.54\00:03:00.48 It was a group of our broad members, 00:03:00.51\00:03:02.08 our first set of board members, we took so much time 00:03:02.11\00:03:05.08 agonizing on what we wanted the name to be. 00:03:05.11\00:03:08.28 And one of our board members Violet Pulidindi 00:03:08.32\00:03:11.19 actually came up with it. 00:03:11.22\00:03:12.55 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:03:12.59\00:03:14.02 As I hinted in the tease, the ministry is about 00:03:14.06\00:03:17.09 13, 14 years old. 00:03:17.13\00:03:18.79 We're starting our 13th year this year. 00:03:18.83\00:03:20.50 All right, praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:03:20.53\00:03:22.66 All because of God. 00:03:22.70\00:03:24.03 You must have started very young. 00:03:24.07\00:03:25.40 Yes. Yes. 00:03:25.43\00:03:30.04 Where are you from? Where were you born? 00:03:30.07\00:03:31.41 I was born in India, came here when I was seven. 00:03:31.44\00:03:33.98 Okay, very early. Yeah. 00:03:34.01\00:03:35.54 Christian family? 00:03:35.58\00:03:36.91 Yes, my father is a pastor, 00:03:36.95\00:03:38.35 third generation pastor I think. 00:03:38.38\00:03:40.72 Third generation pastor I think. 00:03:40.75\00:03:42.38 Wow! Is he in the States? Yes. 00:03:42.42\00:03:44.72 He pastors a church in Maryland. 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.82 Oh, he's still pastoring? Yes. 00:03:46.86\00:03:48.19 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:03:48.22\00:03:49.82 I think the biggest Indian churches. 00:03:49.86\00:03:52.96 Where did your family found out about Adventism? 00:03:52.99\00:03:59.90 There are missionaries who came to India 00:03:59.93\00:04:02.60 and so my great grandparents were converted to Adventism. 00:04:02.64\00:04:08.11 So you are third generation... Let's say one, two... 00:04:08.14\00:04:10.68 Fourth generation. Yes. 00:04:10.71\00:04:12.05 Yeah. Yeah. 00:04:12.08\00:04:13.42 Praise the Lord. Yeah. 00:04:13.45\00:04:14.78 Renee, where are you from? 00:04:14.82\00:04:16.15 I originally from Washington State. 00:04:16.18\00:04:18.29 Washington State. 00:04:18.32\00:04:19.85 Adventist home? Yes. Adventist home. 00:04:19.89\00:04:23.09 You have brother and sisters? I've one younger brother. 00:04:23.12\00:04:25.69 He just started college this year. 00:04:25.73\00:04:27.76 Okay, okay. Very, very good. 00:04:27.80\00:04:30.13 Brother and sisters? Yeah, a younger sister. 00:04:30.17\00:04:32.10 A younger sister? Yeah. 00:04:32.13\00:04:33.84 So two in a family. Yes. 00:04:33.87\00:04:35.57 Praise the Lord. How does you guys meet? 00:04:35.60\00:04:40.28 She was our first student, that's how we met. 00:04:40.31\00:04:43.28 I don't remember. 00:04:43.31\00:04:44.65 Oh, she was actually in Uganda when we first 00:04:44.68\00:04:46.68 when my friend and I first got there 00:04:46.72\00:04:48.05 as student missionaries, 00:04:48.08\00:04:49.75 so I guess we first met in Uganda. 00:04:49.78\00:04:51.45 Yeah, yeah. 00:04:51.49\00:04:52.95 It was through the Walla Walla Student Association 00:04:52.99\00:04:56.93 who had volunteered to chose and to help us 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.89 build our orphanage 00:04:59.93\00:05:01.36 'cause we were renting for 10 years. 00:05:01.40\00:05:03.40 And then I think through them, through the trip 00:05:03.43\00:05:05.73 you guys found out about or... 00:05:05.77\00:05:08.90 Yeah, so my friend and I had been looking, 00:05:08.94\00:05:11.41 we knew that we wanted to go to the student missionary 00:05:11.44\00:05:13.04 the following year. 00:05:13.07\00:05:14.48 And we had been looking at a lot of different places, 00:05:14.51\00:05:16.75 some orphanages in Tanzania 00:05:16.78\00:05:19.65 and they had just all kind of fallen through 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.15 and we didn't really know where we were going to go, 00:05:21.18\00:05:22.78 and then during our community like our chapel time, 00:05:22.82\00:05:26.32 they showed the promotional video 00:05:26.35\00:05:27.86 for our global service project that year 00:05:27.89\00:05:30.03 which was to build an orphanage for Christalis. 00:05:30.06\00:05:33.26 And my friend that I was going with 00:05:33.29\00:05:34.63 and we were sitting in completely different places 00:05:34.66\00:05:36.26 in the chapel, and then afterwards 00:05:36.30\00:05:38.23 we kind of came together and looked at each other, 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.34 and we were like, you know, I feel impressed that 00:05:40.37\00:05:42.10 this is where we should go 00:05:42.14\00:05:43.61 so we both just had that impression 00:05:43.64\00:05:45.47 during that video and it, we just all worked out 00:05:45.51\00:05:48.34 that we got to go there so very, very happy... 00:05:48.38\00:05:50.85 Now the focus of your ministry at current time is Uganda. 00:05:50.88\00:05:54.42 Yes. Yeah. 00:05:54.45\00:05:55.78 Why Uganda? How Uganda? 00:05:55.82\00:05:57.99 I don't know. God, it's definitely God. 00:05:58.02\00:06:00.86 I mean, you know, I never knew much about Uganda, 00:06:00.89\00:06:04.43 it's just kind of happened. 00:06:04.46\00:06:06.49 I mean, I always thought India, 00:06:06.53\00:06:07.96 I grew up there, you know, seen. 00:06:08.00\00:06:11.33 I think that's, you know, my desire for doing 00:06:11.37\00:06:14.14 this kind of work started when I was a kid. 00:06:14.17\00:06:16.64 And, but then God took me to Uganda. 00:06:16.67\00:06:20.01 I think for me and, obviously, 00:06:20.04\00:06:22.01 I don't know God's infinite mind. 00:06:22.04\00:06:24.35 And so but for me I think I was delaying in 00:06:24.38\00:06:27.05 what I had promised Him when I was young, 00:06:27.08\00:06:29.28 and so He used Uganda to kind of get me on track. 00:06:29.32\00:06:33.96 I used to go on family trips to India, 00:06:33.99\00:06:37.06 like, we came when I was seven 00:06:37.09\00:06:38.73 but we didn't go back there till late 00:06:38.76\00:06:40.66 because we didn't have the money. 00:06:40.70\00:06:42.13 And so I was maybe around 10 or 11 00:06:42.16\00:06:45.40 when we went on our first trip, 00:06:45.43\00:06:46.77 and as we were traveling in the night from airports 00:06:46.80\00:06:49.27 I had seen all these kids in slums. 00:06:49.30\00:06:52.11 And that's the first time in my life 00:06:52.14\00:06:53.48 I had seen children in slums, 00:06:53.51\00:06:55.01 and they were living in these homes 00:06:55.04\00:06:56.64 like just dirty cloth with holes in it, 00:06:56.68\00:06:59.15 and kids without shoes on, 00:06:59.18\00:07:01.38 and I just thought as a child at that moment, 00:07:01.42\00:07:03.55 I just thought to myself, like, I didn't understand, you know, 00:07:03.59\00:07:07.39 why are they living like that, I was like 00:07:07.42\00:07:08.99 where is their shoes, where is their bathroom, 00:07:09.02\00:07:11.23 where is their toys. 00:07:11.26\00:07:12.79 Like I just couldn't understand why they were living like that 00:07:12.83\00:07:15.80 and I got to live in a nice warm apartment 00:07:15.83\00:07:18.30 with loving parents. 00:07:18.33\00:07:21.14 You know, everything that a child could need 00:07:21.17\00:07:23.54 and at that moment I realized it was 00:07:23.57\00:07:26.78 because of the grace of God, you know, our families 00:07:26.81\00:07:29.24 and my parents always talk about 00:07:29.28\00:07:30.61 how Adventism came to us 00:07:30.65\00:07:32.38 and how that's why God has blessed us. 00:07:32.41\00:07:34.75 And I just thought it was so unfair 00:07:34.78\00:07:36.85 and then seeing the kids that were begging 00:07:36.89\00:07:38.52 on the streets, and kids in shops 00:07:38.55\00:07:40.22 that would get, three-year olds, 00:07:40.26\00:07:41.59 that would get hit and kicked for, 00:07:41.62\00:07:43.56 you know, as they worked and... 00:07:43.59\00:07:45.49 I didn't felt powerless at that time at 9 and 10, 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.73 like, I didn't know that I could help them at that time 00:07:48.76\00:07:51.17 which I think I could have but I just thought I couldn't 00:07:51.20\00:07:54.80 and I just prayed to God at that moment 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.14 because it was very like, it was so instantaneous like 00:07:57.17\00:08:01.48 it sounds like a lot of thinking, 00:08:01.51\00:08:02.84 but it happened so quickly and it was like 00:08:02.88\00:08:04.88 a knife to your heart, you know, and I just, 00:08:04.91\00:08:07.28 I couldn't stop crying just seeing their suffering... 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.52 So at age 10, you're impressed with all of this, I mean, 00:08:09.55\00:08:12.42 this is really weighing on you at that young age? 00:08:12.45\00:08:15.62 Yeah, I think it's because I was at that young age. 00:08:15.66\00:08:18.09 I think like the desire to serve 00:08:18.13\00:08:20.10 really for a lot of people starts young, 00:08:20.13\00:08:22.16 and we just don't know like God pricks our hearts 00:08:22.20\00:08:24.23 at certain things, and I think because I was that young, 00:08:24.27\00:08:27.54 I could see a direct comparison between their life and my life. 00:08:27.57\00:08:32.21 And that's why it hurt so much I think. 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.24 'Cause a lot of these kids were about 00:08:34.28\00:08:35.61 that same age as you. 00:08:35.64\00:08:36.98 Yeah, or younger. 00:08:37.01\00:08:38.35 And so most of them were younger 00:08:38.38\00:08:39.71 and just seeing that is what hurts so much and so, 00:08:39.75\00:08:43.22 at that moment is when I just, I didn't know what else to do, 00:08:43.25\00:08:46.09 but I just promised God when I grow up, 00:08:46.12\00:08:48.09 I'll come back and help these kids. 00:08:48.12\00:08:50.79 And then I grew up, but I never forgot about of it 00:08:50.83\00:08:52.93 but then you get wrapped up in school, 00:08:52.96\00:08:54.76 and then you have friends, and family, 00:08:54.80\00:08:56.53 I was going out, during childhood 00:08:56.56\00:08:58.10 I was very active in church. 00:08:58.13\00:08:59.47 I was Children's Ministries director for five years, 00:08:59.50\00:09:03.10 I did the VBSS, Social Committee, 00:09:03.14\00:09:05.17 Homeless Feeding, 00:09:05.21\00:09:06.64 anybody needed help I was there... 00:09:06.68\00:09:08.01 So you're involved with the church, I mean, 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.38 your time is being occupied. 00:09:09.41\00:09:10.75 Yes, exactly, but not where God wanted me to be. 00:09:10.78\00:09:12.95 And once our church does like a young adult youth Sabbath 00:09:12.98\00:09:16.25 and so they were... 00:09:16.28\00:09:18.35 They asked me to preach and it was evangelism. 00:09:18.39\00:09:20.26 And I really didn't want to do it 00:09:20.29\00:09:21.62 but the associate pastor forced me to do it, 00:09:21.66\00:09:24.19 and I was the closing person. 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.69 And right after that my aunt asked me 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.03 to go with global evangelism now ShareHim 00:09:28.06\00:09:30.43 on a mission trip to Uganda. 00:09:30.47\00:09:32.03 And so I just spoke about it so I didn't know how to say no. 00:09:32.07\00:09:37.64 Yeah, so I was like, 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.01 "All right, if I'm really meant to go, 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.64 God will work out these three miracles." 00:09:40.68\00:09:42.24 I was like for sure this is not going to happen 00:09:42.28\00:09:44.61 so I just got a new job, 00:09:44.65\00:09:45.98 they had to give me two weeks leave, 00:09:46.01\00:09:47.35 and my manager approved it by mistake. 00:09:47.38\00:09:49.68 I didn't have the money at all, it's expensive, 00:09:49.72\00:09:52.45 and my tax return was exactly the amount 00:09:52.49\00:09:55.62 I needed for my expenses. 00:09:55.66\00:09:56.99 Wow, that is two down. 00:09:57.03\00:09:58.36 And then my school days, I was trying to do my masters, 00:09:58.39\00:10:00.90 they said it's fine, you know, you can take a break. 00:10:00.93\00:10:03.03 So I was like, there is like no reason for me not to go. 00:10:03.06\00:10:06.43 So I went there, I told her 00:10:06.47\00:10:07.80 I didn't want to do any preaching, 00:10:07.84\00:10:09.17 I just wanted to do stuff for the kids, 00:10:09.20\00:10:10.87 I would do like a program for the kids. 00:10:10.91\00:10:12.81 And so I went there and that was my focus 00:10:12.84\00:10:15.04 and while I was there, it just kind of felt, 00:10:15.08\00:10:18.58 really I felt like I wasn't making a difference 00:10:18.61\00:10:20.58 because they couldn't understand me, 00:10:20.62\00:10:21.95 I had translators, there was like 100 of them, 00:10:21.98\00:10:24.02 so I just kept praying about it, 00:10:24.05\00:10:25.39 and then the group with us wanted to find an orphanage. 00:10:25.42\00:10:28.89 And while we were walking 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.26 to this orphanage that they found... 00:10:30.29\00:10:31.63 I saw all these kids standing around in the woods 00:10:31.66\00:10:34.66 no clothes on, no shoes on, and in their eyes 00:10:34.70\00:10:38.73 I saw the same kids I had seen in India. 00:10:38.77\00:10:41.10 So here we go again. 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.47 Yeah, and it's just brought it back to me, 00:10:42.50\00:10:44.71 and then in that moment my thoughts were, 00:10:44.74\00:10:47.24 I'm not a little girl anymore, I have an adult job, 00:10:47.28\00:10:50.45 and I have adult money, like, what is stopping me now. 00:10:50.48\00:10:53.55 There is nothing that should stop me 00:10:53.58\00:10:55.58 from helping these kids. 00:10:55.62\00:10:57.29 So I just would talk to my mom every day 00:10:57.32\00:10:59.99 who is in the US, we pray about it. 00:11:00.02\00:11:03.06 It was such a short amount of time those trips are short 00:11:03.09\00:11:05.26 so it was like only like a week left, 00:11:05.29\00:11:07.10 so I interviewed as many, 00:11:07.13\00:11:08.70 I had people take me to the poorest areas, 00:11:08.73\00:11:10.33 I would take them bananas, eggs, 00:11:10.37\00:11:11.73 whatever food feed the kids, interviewed them, 00:11:11.77\00:11:14.20 interviewed their parents. 00:11:14.24\00:11:15.57 I had a pastor bring me children that he needed help, 00:11:15.60\00:11:19.44 and he brought me 200. 00:11:19.47\00:11:20.81 And I was like, "Ah," and they're all like 00:11:20.84\00:11:23.41 there in the dark in this church in the front. 00:11:23.45\00:11:26.78 And I was like, "What am I supposed to do?" 00:11:26.82\00:11:28.15 And they're like say something. 00:11:28.18\00:11:29.52 And I'm like, you know, what. 00:11:29.55\00:11:31.19 So I just said, "You know, we're trying to help, 00:11:31.22\00:11:33.92 thank you for coming, we see the need." 00:11:33.96\00:11:36.52 And so I just prayed about it and by that time 00:11:36.56\00:11:37.96 I was close to the end of my trip, 00:11:37.99\00:11:39.33 I had a $100 left from my expenses 00:11:39.36\00:11:41.06 so I left that with the pastor there 00:11:41.10\00:11:42.56 for one month's rent, 00:11:42.60\00:11:43.93 I spoke to the two ladies helping me, ask them 00:11:43.97\00:11:45.60 what they'd be willing to help if we started a home, 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.27 they said, okay, and then I just came home. 00:11:47.30\00:11:49.24 So the idea of home just occurred to you 00:11:49.27\00:11:51.34 very quickly on that trip. 00:11:51.37\00:11:52.77 So when we went to that orphanage, 00:11:52.81\00:11:56.31 initially I thought let's put all the kids in there. 00:11:56.34\00:11:59.35 There is already an orphanage there, 00:11:59.38\00:12:00.82 it was run by these two men 00:12:00.85\00:12:03.02 and they had some Canadian funders. 00:12:03.05\00:12:05.35 But then every day I had this gnawing feeling inside, 00:12:05.39\00:12:07.92 and I just kept telling my mom like, 00:12:07.96\00:12:09.46 "How do we know they're treated well? 00:12:09.49\00:12:11.26 How do we know they're not getting abused? 00:12:11.29\00:12:12.79 How do we know, I mean, if they'll even learn 00:12:12.83\00:12:14.50 about Jesus if we put them here?" 00:12:14.53\00:12:16.50 So I think just out of prayer we just felt led to... 00:12:16.53\00:12:20.17 To do your own home. To start our own home. 00:12:20.20\00:12:21.54 Yeah. 00:12:21.57\00:12:22.90 And then I came home and my mom raised $2,000 00:12:22.94\00:12:25.27 and we had a family friend Yvonne David 00:12:25.31\00:12:27.04 who worked with us in the hospital, 00:12:27.08\00:12:28.74 and my mom would share about this desire with her, 00:12:28.78\00:12:31.55 and she's actually the one she wanted to... 00:12:31.58\00:12:33.78 She said she had nothing to lose 00:12:33.82\00:12:35.18 and she quit her job and gave away her home 00:12:35.22\00:12:37.42 and her car, and she moved there... 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.06 Moved to Uganda? 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.42 To Uganda. Wow! 00:12:41.46\00:12:42.79 And started projects in the home. 00:12:42.82\00:12:45.59 What did you study in school? Nursing. 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.80 I thought it was the only way I could be a missionary, 00:12:48.83\00:12:50.57 that was my dream to be a missionary. 00:12:50.60\00:12:52.17 And there's no missionary class, you know, 00:12:52.20\00:12:54.60 in college so I thought that was it 00:12:54.64\00:12:56.84 and that's what I did. 00:12:56.87\00:12:58.81 Wow! That is... 00:12:58.84\00:13:00.18 So Yvonne bought into your dream 00:13:00.21\00:13:03.38 right away obviously. 00:13:03.41\00:13:04.75 Yeah. Yeah. 00:13:04.78\00:13:06.11 Wow! 00:13:06.15\00:13:07.48 And it's just a miracle 00:13:07.52\00:13:09.42 if I asked my board now to start something with $2,000 00:13:09.45\00:13:12.45 they'd shut me down, you know but, I mean, I saw God. 00:13:12.49\00:13:15.72 See, a lot of times you don't know, 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.09 you can't do something so you just do it. 00:13:17.13\00:13:19.96 And people tell you, you can't do that. 00:13:20.00\00:13:21.56 Well, I really did it, you know, 00:13:21.60\00:13:22.93 so I know it can done because God has given me. 00:13:22.96\00:13:24.87 And then, of course, when God guides, He provides. 00:13:24.90\00:13:28.14 If God puts that burden on you, He's going to make a way 00:13:28.17\00:13:31.64 to discharge that responsibility. 00:13:31.67\00:13:35.51 So He's put something in your heart, 00:13:35.54\00:13:37.21 and it percolated all those years, 00:13:37.25\00:13:39.48 so now it get a chance to go to fruition. 00:13:39.51\00:13:42.82 So your, Yvonne is a relative or just a close friend? 00:13:42.85\00:13:46.86 Shares a same last name, 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.22 but we're not really related, just family friends. 00:13:48.26\00:13:49.62 So my mom and her grew up together 00:13:49.66\00:13:51.26 they were friends, you know. 00:13:51.29\00:13:53.53 And your mom bought into this 'cause she has ready money, 00:13:53.56\00:13:55.36 and Yvonne really bought into it and moved over. 00:13:55.40\00:13:57.57 Now when do you come aboard? 00:13:57.60\00:13:59.10 Renee, you actually do get to talk. 00:13:59.13\00:14:03.94 I went in 2014, as a student missionary there, 00:14:03.97\00:14:07.48 and I was there for eight months total. 00:14:07.51\00:14:10.68 The first time? The first time. 00:14:10.71\00:14:12.45 You were in school at Walla Walla? 00:14:12.48\00:14:13.82 Yeah. 00:14:13.85\00:14:15.18 So it was in a chapel you're saying that 00:14:15.22\00:14:16.55 you heard about this or at some... 00:14:16.58\00:14:17.95 Yeah, so it was in our chapel that we saw the video 00:14:17.99\00:14:21.99 promoting our global service team. 00:14:22.02\00:14:25.39 Every year at Walla Walla University 00:14:25.43\00:14:26.76 we raise funds for like a global project. 00:14:26.80\00:14:30.10 And so that year they had chosen 00:14:30.13\00:14:31.47 to help Christalis build their home. 00:14:31.50\00:14:32.90 So that's where we first heard about it, 00:14:32.93\00:14:35.10 and then felt impressed to go there. 00:14:35.14\00:14:36.47 Okay, let me try to connect the dots. 00:14:36.50\00:14:37.84 Now you were out of school, how does Christalis 00:14:37.87\00:14:41.74 get on the radar at Walla Walla? 00:14:41.78\00:14:44.15 Miracle of God. Miracle of God. 00:14:44.18\00:14:46.88 Let me tell you because we've been wanting... 00:14:46.92\00:14:49.05 Yvonne wanted to build a home, and I just, the thought 00:14:49.08\00:14:52.72 because my father built the church that we're in, 00:14:52.75\00:14:55.22 and I just know what goes into building. 00:14:55.26\00:14:57.83 And I was like, "Oh, my gosh, I can't do this, 00:14:57.86\00:14:59.56 I'm not capable of doing this." 00:14:59.59\00:15:00.93 So I would just pray to God, "God, 00:15:00.96\00:15:02.33 send me a big home that's already built, 00:15:02.36\00:15:04.27 I'm sure it's there, just send us that 00:15:04.30\00:15:06.63 we can just purchase it." 00:15:06.67\00:15:08.00 That was my constant prayer and Yvonne wanted to built, 00:15:08.04\00:15:10.97 you know, she had that vision that was good. 00:15:11.01\00:15:13.07 I was like impossible. 00:15:13.11\00:15:15.08 And then one day I was actually, 00:15:15.11\00:15:18.38 I was doing the spring fair at our church, 00:15:18.41\00:15:20.48 I was in charge of the spring fair. 00:15:20.52\00:15:22.02 I got a call on my phone. 00:15:22.05\00:15:23.62 It was my best friend's family who once years ago, 00:15:23.65\00:15:26.86 they put together their Christmas money 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.82 to donate to the kids years ago. 00:15:28.86\00:15:31.09 He called me and he said his niece is on the committee 00:15:31.13\00:15:33.70 at Walla Walla Student Association. 00:15:33.73\00:15:37.03 And they are evaluating orphanages to help built a home 00:15:37.07\00:15:40.34 that they had another one in Peru 00:15:40.37\00:15:41.90 that didn't workout or something like that. 00:15:41.94\00:15:43.81 And they wanted to know more about ours. 00:15:43.84\00:15:45.87 So I was like, yes, I told them everything, 00:15:45.91\00:15:47.61 he was like, okay, my niece might call you, 00:15:47.64\00:15:48.98 and she called me the same day. 00:15:49.01\00:15:50.35 They're like tearing down all the stuff and I'm inside 00:15:50.38\00:15:52.58 like the Sabbath school room talking to them. 00:15:52.61\00:15:54.62 And I told her everything, and literally within two weeks 00:15:54.65\00:15:57.92 they choose to help us build the home out of nowhere. 00:15:57.95\00:16:00.96 God is so amazing. God is so amazing. 00:16:00.99\00:16:03.53 Either you are a better salesperson than you think 00:16:03.56\00:16:07.16 or you're a better sales person than you think. 00:16:07.20\00:16:11.43 Because first of all you're full of your subject, 00:16:11.47\00:16:14.80 but I'm also seeing that the Lord is guiding you 00:16:14.84\00:16:17.61 to the right places, to the right people 00:16:17.64\00:16:19.21 at the right time. 00:16:19.24\00:16:20.58 And then your own sort of infectious nature 00:16:20.61\00:16:23.35 just kind of takes over, you're a really good salesman. 00:16:23.38\00:16:25.61 Oh, my goodness, I cannot take that complement. 00:16:25.65\00:16:28.25 I'm not good at it, it was the worst thing I had to do. 00:16:28.28\00:16:31.42 You cannot say that about me. 00:16:31.45\00:16:33.09 I hate asking people for money, I just can't. 00:16:33.12\00:16:37.66 Yeah, I'm not good at asking people for money either, 00:16:37.69\00:16:40.06 but I'll do it for Jesus and you do it, well, 00:16:40.10\00:16:42.56 you're better at it than you think. 00:16:42.60\00:16:45.73 And when God gives you a burden, 00:16:45.77\00:16:48.47 He also gives you a way to exercise that burden. 00:16:48.50\00:16:51.54 So you got a natural sort of infectious way 00:16:51.57\00:16:55.01 about going through life, and the smile, 00:16:55.04\00:16:56.95 and the whole deal that God has given you. 00:16:56.98\00:16:59.41 So you don't have to beg just be you 00:16:59.45\00:17:01.22 and then money comes. 00:17:01.25\00:17:02.88 I think God bring the money. 00:17:02.92\00:17:04.35 Because He gave you that burden so young, 00:17:04.39\00:17:05.99 you had it all your life. 00:17:06.02\00:17:07.39 So it's part of who you are, it's part of your kind of DNA, 00:17:07.42\00:17:10.49 so we praise the Lord for that. 00:17:10.53\00:17:11.99 Having said that, I want to go to Renee again 00:17:12.03\00:17:14.00 because when we left you, you were at worship 00:17:14.03\00:17:17.10 and you're getting impressed with this thing. 00:17:17.13\00:17:18.93 You've gone from student missionary, 00:17:18.97\00:17:20.84 now you're a full time employee, 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.44 so walk me through what happened 00:17:22.47\00:17:24.47 during that eight-month time that you're in Uganda 00:17:24.51\00:17:27.68 that made you want to do this kind of as an vocation, 00:17:27.71\00:17:29.84 you went from volunteer to employee. 00:17:29.88\00:17:31.58 So something happened during that time 00:17:31.61\00:17:33.38 that you where there that touched your heart? 00:17:33.42\00:17:35.38 Yes, of course, the kids there, I mean, 00:17:35.42\00:17:37.45 they're just incredible kids and you just fall in love 00:17:37.49\00:17:39.55 with them so easily, and you just, you see 00:17:39.59\00:17:43.19 how far they've come and how, you know, 00:17:43.22\00:17:45.53 how much further they have to go in their education, 00:17:45.56\00:17:47.86 you know, and you just want to continue helping them 00:17:47.90\00:17:50.27 to achieve that. 00:17:50.30\00:17:51.63 And one of things that I love about Christalis so much 00:17:51.67\00:17:53.27 is that the kids continue all the way through university 00:17:53.30\00:17:56.87 so you see them, you know, 00:17:56.91\00:17:58.24 come in there in primary school, 00:17:58.27\00:17:59.61 and you get to watch them graduate with a diploma 00:17:59.64\00:18:02.11 and get a job. 00:18:02.14\00:18:03.48 And we actually were able to go to the graduation 00:18:03.51\00:18:05.81 of the first child in the home that graduated from university, 00:18:05.85\00:18:08.55 we were able to take all the kids, 00:18:08.58\00:18:10.19 and got his graduation 00:18:10.22\00:18:11.95 and that was just an amazing thing, 00:18:11.99\00:18:13.32 just to see that accomplishment. 00:18:13.36\00:18:14.89 You know, it's always so great to watch someone succeed 00:18:14.92\00:18:17.66 and just knowing where he came from, 00:18:17.69\00:18:19.66 and just being able to be a part of that. 00:18:19.69\00:18:21.26 It's just amazing so I don't think I ever imagined 00:18:21.30\00:18:24.40 I would work for them full time when I was, you know, 00:18:24.43\00:18:26.94 just three years ago. 00:18:26.97\00:18:28.37 But I just kept volunteering with them after I left Uganda 00:18:28.40\00:18:31.17 and it just worked out, and I'm so thankful I did 00:18:31.21\00:18:33.11 because, I mean, I love them. 00:18:33.14\00:18:36.54 And I keep forgetting the ministry has been around 00:18:36.58\00:18:38.41 long enough for you to see a generation 00:18:38.45\00:18:40.45 go through to graduation. 00:18:40.48\00:18:42.08 I keep, say I keep looking at you 00:18:42.12\00:18:44.75 and I have to push your ages up, 00:18:44.79\00:18:46.62 but I won't ask you how old you are, 00:18:46.65\00:18:48.39 but I keep having to push it up because you look so young, 00:18:48.42\00:18:52.86 but you've been in existence long enough to see 00:18:52.89\00:18:55.00 a group of children come into the system, 00:18:55.03\00:18:56.97 and then move through the system, 00:18:57.00\00:18:58.33 and then go out of the system which is a wonderful thing. 00:18:58.37\00:19:00.97 We're going to look at some of the kids 00:19:01.00\00:19:02.34 in just a little bit. 00:19:02.37\00:19:03.74 So Yvonne is over there? 00:19:03.77\00:19:06.14 She retired from helping us last year or mid-year, 00:19:06.17\00:19:09.74 before she was with us for 10 years. 00:19:09.78\00:19:11.68 She lived in Uganda for 10 years. 00:19:11.71\00:19:13.75 So she grew with us from the orphanage 00:19:13.78\00:19:16.22 to the assistance program, 00:19:16.25\00:19:17.85 we had a small meal program in the old home. 00:19:17.89\00:19:20.02 And she was the one who helped build 00:19:20.06\00:19:23.02 she really, you know, managed building the home 00:19:23.06\00:19:25.99 and then she retired after that. 00:19:26.03\00:19:27.43 So the home is built up and running and established. 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.40 Yes, yes. 00:19:29.43\00:19:30.77 We rented 10 years and then 00:19:30.80\00:19:32.13 we moved into the home last year. 00:19:32.17\00:19:34.37 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:19:34.40\00:19:35.74 Who now is running it over there? 00:19:35.77\00:19:38.44 So I run it from here for the most part 00:19:38.47\00:19:41.54 but we have local staff and, so we have about 00:19:41.58\00:19:44.61 15 to 20 staff and volunteers there who are local. 00:19:44.65\00:19:48.12 And one of the biggest blessings 00:19:48.15\00:19:49.65 for us this year as Renee said so, 00:19:49.68\00:19:51.59 our daughter graduated with business administration 00:19:51.62\00:19:54.12 and accounting in November, 00:19:54.16\00:19:56.22 and she is now the manager of our home, 00:19:56.26\00:19:58.63 which is one of our dreams that eventually our children 00:19:58.66\00:20:00.90 will grow up to take over our organization 00:20:00.93\00:20:02.93 over there, and so... 00:20:02.96\00:20:04.30 Now you said our daughter. 00:20:04.33\00:20:05.67 So she was in our home, she was one of the children 00:20:05.70\00:20:07.70 that grew up in our home. 00:20:07.74\00:20:09.07 Okay, okay. 'Cause now I was getting afraid. 00:20:09.10\00:20:11.57 I was like you got a daughter coming out of college, 00:20:11.61\00:20:14.64 I really got to change what I'm thinking. 00:20:14.68\00:20:16.01 No, I'll never have a daughter coming out of college, 00:20:16.04\00:20:20.15 not be that old ever. 00:20:20.18\00:20:23.39 Well, praise the Lord. Yeah, that's a big dream. 00:20:23.42\00:20:24.85 You're bringing people out of the system 00:20:24.89\00:20:26.22 who are giving back to the system. 00:20:26.25\00:20:27.59 Yes, yes. 00:20:27.62\00:20:28.96 And that's really our desire, you know, even not only for, 00:20:28.99\00:20:31.36 not only for our organization, but in general, you know, 00:20:31.39\00:20:34.46 one of our visions is that our children will give back 00:20:34.50\00:20:36.56 to the community or the world at large, 00:20:36.60\00:20:38.53 like one of the things we do in our home 00:20:38.57\00:20:40.74 is every morning after worship, we have the kids, you know, 00:20:40.77\00:20:44.17 we try to also install positive thinking in them. 00:20:44.21\00:20:47.11 So every morning after worship, we all have to jump up 00:20:47.14\00:20:49.44 and say it's going to be a great day today. 00:20:49.48\00:20:51.11 And if I see someone not jumping, 00:20:51.15\00:20:53.38 I make them jump. 00:20:53.42\00:20:54.75 We don't stop jumping until every single person jumps, 00:20:54.78\00:20:57.19 staff, kids, babies, it doesn't matter. 00:20:57.22\00:20:59.65 And then after that we sing the song 00:20:59.69\00:21:01.46 I made up from Elly the Elephant 00:21:01.49\00:21:03.02 the show here, I don't know 00:21:03.06\00:21:04.39 if you've ever seen it, Elly the Elephant. 00:21:04.43\00:21:05.76 So we dance around and we sing, let's make some magic 00:21:05.79\00:21:08.26 with our day today. 00:21:08.30\00:21:10.57 And then so the kids sing that and magic is something 00:21:10.60\00:21:13.94 good you do for somebody. 00:21:13.97\00:21:15.50 So throughout the day they have to find 00:21:15.54\00:21:17.11 some opportunity to do good and then in the evening 00:21:17.14\00:21:19.17 when we have worship, after worship 00:21:19.21\00:21:20.71 they share the different ways that they did magic that day. 00:21:20.74\00:21:23.61 And we're trying harder now to incorporate, 00:21:23.65\00:21:26.51 get them to do stuff for other kids and they too, 00:21:26.55\00:21:30.39 when they see kids that don't eat 00:21:30.42\00:21:31.75 or not in school, they'll let us know, 00:21:31.79\00:21:33.79 so we hope to really install that desire 00:21:33.82\00:21:36.49 to serve as they grow up. 00:21:36.52\00:21:38.79 So it seems as though the home is unabashedly, 00:21:38.83\00:21:40.96 unashamedly Adventist and those values are sort of 00:21:41.00\00:21:45.00 woven into everything you do with the kids, yeah. 00:21:45.03\00:21:47.17 Yes, I mean, we don't convert anybody, 00:21:47.20\00:21:49.87 government, you know, won't allow anything like that. 00:21:49.90\00:21:52.67 We have children from all different religions 00:21:52.71\00:21:54.58 that come into our home, but if they're in our home, 00:21:54.61\00:21:58.38 it's an Adventist home, we have morning, 00:21:58.41\00:21:59.75 evening worship, they go to church... 00:21:59.78\00:22:01.12 So the exposure is there. You know, on Friday. 00:22:01.15\00:22:02.48 Yes, and we've had little over 15 baptisms of our children 00:22:02.52\00:22:05.99 just their own free will and nothing forced upon them. 00:22:06.02\00:22:09.82 The guardians are allowed, like if there's guardians 00:22:09.86\00:22:11.76 or extended members to come take their kids 00:22:11.79\00:22:13.40 to their own churches, but no one does than our kids, 00:22:13.43\00:22:17.30 you know, like even like our children, 00:22:17.33\00:22:18.90 we had brought children from. 00:22:18.93\00:22:20.57 In the past year or so, we've been able to take 00:22:20.60\00:22:22.80 12 children off the street. 00:22:22.84\00:22:24.67 And one of the most happiest things for me 00:22:24.71\00:22:27.18 is when I saw one of them like just sitting there 00:22:27.21\00:22:29.54 looking through the Bible, we have like a comic Bible, 00:22:29.58\00:22:32.08 just when the other kids are playing 00:22:32.11\00:22:34.25 and he's reading the Bible. 00:22:34.28\00:22:36.25 And, you know, and they love to hear the Bible stories 00:22:36.28\00:22:39.12 and they want to hear more and it's just nice to see. 00:22:39.15\00:22:42.32 So, Shalini, do you split your time between the States 00:22:42.36\00:22:45.39 and Uganda, are you back and forth a lot? 00:22:45.43\00:22:46.96 Yes. Yeah, I'm back and forth a lot. 00:22:47.00\00:22:48.90 I go about three to four times a year is what I try to do 00:22:48.93\00:22:51.93 about a month at a time and sometimes 00:22:51.97\00:22:54.04 two to three weeks, so it's all based 00:22:54.07\00:22:55.44 on the schedule from here and there. 00:22:55.47\00:22:57.54 And we're actually looking for a country director 00:22:57.57\00:23:00.41 to volunteer a missionary over there. 00:23:00.44\00:23:03.31 And even other people too like we're looking for a nurse, 00:23:03.35\00:23:06.31 counselor, teacher, HR specialist, accounts, 00:23:06.35\00:23:10.39 and project manager, really anything 00:23:10.42\00:23:13.86 that you are able to do we need. 00:23:13.89\00:23:16.12 So anyone just as if they have the heart 00:23:16.16\00:23:18.23 or the desire to serve 00:23:18.26\00:23:20.40 or care for children or caretaker to... 00:23:20.43\00:23:22.76 We need you. 00:23:22.80\00:23:24.47 How big is the home and how many children 00:23:24.50\00:23:27.04 are you serving right now? 00:23:27.07\00:23:28.64 So we have... 00:23:28.67\00:23:30.31 We support 30 kids out of our home, 00:23:30.34\00:23:32.44 we can go up to 40, but right now 00:23:32.47\00:23:34.18 because we don't have office space, 00:23:34.21\00:23:35.58 we have caseworkers for the kids in the community, 00:23:35.61\00:23:37.48 an accountant, social worker, a home manager. 00:23:37.51\00:23:40.82 And we don't have a building for an office 00:23:40.85\00:23:43.72 so they use one of the rooms, 00:23:43.75\00:23:45.65 the bedrooms we have for the boys, 00:23:45.69\00:23:47.26 they're all kind of squashed in the little bedroom. 00:23:47.29\00:23:49.99 So we have the capacity to take in 40 kids, 00:23:50.03\00:23:52.09 but right now we support about 30 of them. 00:23:52.13\00:23:54.76 Actually this morning we got a baby of one month 00:23:54.80\00:23:57.17 that they brought to us. 00:23:57.20\00:23:58.67 We have four babies in the home. 00:23:58.70\00:24:00.67 And if God blesses and, you know, 00:24:00.70\00:24:04.71 we can serve more in other homes. 00:24:04.74\00:24:07.74 What ages do you work with? 00:24:07.78\00:24:10.81 There's no minimum, we got one baby at eight hours old. 00:24:10.85\00:24:15.08 We brought her at eight hours old 00:24:15.12\00:24:16.58 her mom had passed away in childbirth. 00:24:16.62\00:24:18.72 And our mission is that we keep them 00:24:18.75\00:24:22.29 till they're self-sufficient, whether that's 20 or 25 00:24:22.32\00:24:25.39 whatever it is. 00:24:25.43\00:24:26.93 You know, one of the things that when 00:24:26.96\00:24:28.30 I talked about the children I saw 00:24:28.33\00:24:30.03 and, you know, when I saw them 00:24:30.07\00:24:31.40 I wanted to take them to my home. 00:24:31.43\00:24:33.00 And when I was a kid, I thought what I wanted 00:24:33.03\00:24:34.67 to give them was the toys and the food 00:24:34.70\00:24:36.74 but really that feeling I had was the support 00:24:36.77\00:24:39.71 my parents gave me, the love, the affection, 00:24:39.74\00:24:41.84 the support. 00:24:41.88\00:24:43.85 And so that's what we want to give our kids. 00:24:43.88\00:24:46.11 If we just take them to elementary or secondary school 00:24:46.15\00:24:49.78 and then leave them, that doesn't leave them anything, 00:24:49.82\00:24:52.72 how do they support themselves, and think of us as parents, 00:24:52.75\00:24:55.92 you know, what our parents give us. 00:24:55.96\00:24:57.99 Why do we see like a 50-year old crying 00:24:58.03\00:24:59.96 when their parent dies 00:25:00.00\00:25:01.33 because it's beyond just what you can do. 00:25:01.36\00:25:04.23 So even after they become self-sufficient 00:25:04.27\00:25:06.90 we want to emotionally be there for them, 00:25:06.94\00:25:08.90 and be their advisers and they're family, 00:25:08.94\00:25:10.74 we're the family, they are children. 00:25:10.77\00:25:12.61 Now your time must be very much occupied, 00:25:12.64\00:25:15.88 you are a wife and mother, and you have a daughter. 00:25:15.91\00:25:20.92 Yes. How old? 00:25:20.95\00:25:22.28 Eva is seven years old. 00:25:22.32\00:25:23.65 Seven years old, so that's kind of the active age. 00:25:23.69\00:25:25.35 Oh, she is very active. 00:25:25.39\00:25:26.72 How you manage your day, and what kind of support 00:25:26.76\00:25:29.52 do you get family wise for... 00:25:29.56\00:25:31.43 Because this is the kind of thing that can sallow you up 00:25:31.46\00:25:33.90 emotionally and time wise, you know, 00:25:33.93\00:25:35.93 it can become your all and all. 00:25:35.96\00:25:37.30 It is. 00:25:37.33\00:25:38.67 And it's hard not to because it's different 00:25:38.70\00:25:40.04 from a regular job, a regular job you go in 00:25:40.07\00:25:42.04 and you do what's needed but when you're serving God, 00:25:42.07\00:25:44.57 it's your life and there's no time clock, 00:25:44.61\00:25:47.68 and there's no anything. 00:25:47.71\00:25:49.04 But, yeah, like you said you're totally right, 00:25:49.08\00:25:51.01 I cannot do it by myself everything that I'm able to do 00:25:51.05\00:25:54.25 is with the support of my parents 00:25:54.28\00:25:55.75 who do a lot of babysitting, and helping, and praying, 00:25:55.78\00:25:58.95 and yelling, and advising me. 00:25:58.99\00:26:01.09 My husband who is very patient with everything 00:26:01.12\00:26:03.43 that I have to do it's not the life 00:26:03.46\00:26:04.99 that he would want for himself, you know, 00:26:05.03\00:26:07.10 but he's very patient and sees, you know, 00:26:07.13\00:26:09.03 what God is doing and his support is 00:26:09.06\00:26:12.47 I couldn't do it without him. 00:26:12.50\00:26:13.84 And then our board members I'm, like you said, a nurse, 00:26:13.87\00:26:18.31 I know I'm a bad salesman, I'm not good, but my board, 00:26:18.34\00:26:23.24 the board that I have is wonderful, 00:26:23.28\00:26:25.71 the advise they give me, the support they give, 00:26:25.75\00:26:27.72 the guidance they give, our volunteers 00:26:27.75\00:26:29.72 we wouldn't be here today. 00:26:29.75\00:26:31.09 Like, even though the home started, right, 00:26:31.12\00:26:34.56 the first four years, I wasn't giving it my all. 00:26:34.59\00:26:38.09 And we had an advisor Mr. John Stanley, 00:26:38.13\00:26:41.63 Dr. John Stanley, he advised us to get volunteers. 00:26:41.66\00:26:44.30 So in 2011 that's when we started getting volunteers. 00:26:44.33\00:26:47.60 And because of the support of the volunteers 00:26:47.64\00:26:50.27 that's when we really started growing and being able 00:26:50.31\00:26:53.11 to do more because we had more manpower. 00:26:53.14\00:26:55.51 And then the miracle grant we got a year ago 00:26:55.54\00:26:59.18 that helped us to pay for Renee and then 2.5 salary here 00:26:59.21\00:27:03.79 is just miracles of God. 00:27:03.82\00:27:05.35 Praise the Lord. Really everything is God. 00:27:05.39\00:27:07.92 The volunteers are very, very important to this ministry 00:27:07.96\00:27:10.86 so we know how volunteers going to put wings to your work 00:27:10.89\00:27:14.23 because, you know, they can do the time. 00:27:14.26\00:27:17.90 Are you able to practice nursing 00:27:17.93\00:27:19.57 and still work and still do this 00:27:19.60\00:27:21.40 and carry along and juggle all those things? 00:27:21.44\00:27:23.00 I was doing it up until February of last year. 00:27:23.04\00:27:27.28 I was dying so it was literally a miracle of God, you know, 00:27:27.31\00:27:32.71 the grant we applied for was to help 200 children 00:27:32.75\00:27:35.22 go to school, and the grantors they want to stay anonymous, 00:27:35.25\00:27:38.65 they came back with, can we give you 2.5 salaries, 00:27:38.69\00:27:42.19 and they were doing it in a span of five years 00:27:42.22\00:27:44.93 in which we have to, you know, 00:27:44.96\00:27:46.59 be able to support it ourselves. 00:27:46.63\00:27:48.93 But I was literally dying, I can't even explain to you, 00:27:48.96\00:27:52.70 I was dying, I was drowning. 00:27:52.73\00:27:55.04 And God just brought that grant at the right time. 00:27:55.07\00:27:57.07 So last year is when we started with that, 00:27:57.11\00:28:03.04 I'm getting all my years mixed up right now 00:28:03.08\00:28:04.55 because we're just. 00:28:04.58\00:28:06.11 Yeah, last year. Praise the Lord. 00:28:06.15\00:28:08.62 I was wondering because this is work 00:28:08.65\00:28:11.12 and then your husband has to be without his wife for a month 00:28:11.15\00:28:13.92 at a time, several times during the year, 00:28:13.96\00:28:16.39 but it also means there's no time to work. 00:28:16.42\00:28:18.49 And when I say work, I mean, to be a nurse. 00:28:18.53\00:28:20.40 Yeah, so there's got to be some other way 00:28:20.43\00:28:21.93 to support yourself because you've got a child 00:28:21.96\00:28:23.87 and you've got family, the whole kind of thing 00:28:23.90\00:28:25.80 so God really did some miracle work 00:28:25.83\00:28:27.80 and it's tough for which we praise the Lord. 00:28:27.84\00:28:29.70 Even when we don't ask Him, He provides what we need. 00:28:29.74\00:28:31.81 Yeah, for He knows your heart. Yeah. 00:28:31.84\00:28:34.14 So, Renee, as marketer what is your job at this point 00:28:34.18\00:28:37.95 in time now as far as Christalis is considered? 00:28:37.98\00:28:41.38 So marketing in general, I guess it would be my job 00:28:41.42\00:28:45.45 so just promoting, you know, 00:28:45.49\00:28:47.69 Shalini has so many great ideas, 00:28:47.72\00:28:49.52 she's such a wonderful person and Christalis 00:28:49.56\00:28:50.96 is such a wonderful organization. 00:28:50.99\00:28:52.56 So just getting that out there, 00:28:52.59\00:28:55.66 the amazing things that Christalis does, 00:28:55.70\00:28:58.10 just making that available to more people, 00:28:58.13\00:29:01.00 expanding outside of Maryland, because I don't think 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.77 they're able to do that a lot so we now have, 00:29:03.81\00:29:06.64 thanks to Walla Walla University, you know, 00:29:06.68\00:29:08.51 supporting their project, we have donors 00:29:08.54\00:29:10.28 on the west coast also. 00:29:10.31\00:29:11.65 So just expanding our base finding other people. 00:29:11.68\00:29:16.05 Yeah, 'cause she's east coast, you're west coast 00:29:16.08\00:29:17.89 so you're going to get to uncover. 00:29:17.92\00:29:20.26 So if someone is watching this program, 00:29:20.29\00:29:22.22 they're even kind of excited, they wanted to come over 00:29:22.26\00:29:24.19 and volunteer some time two weeks, three weeks 00:29:24.23\00:29:26.43 with some particular skills, can you use them? 00:29:26.46\00:29:29.03 Yeah, I think you need at least a few months... 00:29:29.06\00:29:33.07 And you could do two weeks and three weeks 00:29:33.10\00:29:34.44 a lot is lost in travel, but yeah, we can use them 00:29:34.47\00:29:37.74 no matter whatever they want to do, 00:29:37.77\00:29:40.01 we're pleased to talk to them. 00:29:40.04\00:29:41.38 So really the longer stay would be actually 00:29:41.41\00:29:42.94 more beneficial to you and your ministry. 00:29:42.98\00:29:45.11 Let's look at... 00:29:45.15\00:29:46.48 Well, first let's go to this video 00:29:46.51\00:29:47.85 because this kind of gives us a little flavor, 00:29:47.88\00:29:49.45 then we look at some pictures and then we'll kind talk about 00:29:49.48\00:29:51.15 some other stuff. 00:29:51.19\00:29:52.52 So let's go to the video just now 00:29:52.55\00:29:53.89 and this is Christalis, what we're going to see here? 00:29:53.92\00:29:56.93 So it's a video about two of our students 00:29:56.96\00:29:59.33 who were over there talking about, 00:29:59.36\00:30:00.70 one of them talks about our home, the orphanage, 00:30:00.73\00:30:03.03 and a child that came in there. 00:30:03.06\00:30:04.40 And, you know, the one talks about our assistance program 00:30:04.43\00:30:06.07 that we touched on a little bit and kids and the community. 00:30:06.10\00:30:08.70 All right, let's take a look. 00:30:08.74\00:30:10.31 My name is John Browning. My name is Supriya. 00:30:10.34\00:30:13.11 I was born and raised in the beautiful city 00:30:13.14\00:30:15.34 of Bozeman, Montana 00:30:15.38\00:30:16.98 I hope to teach secondary school 00:30:17.01\00:30:19.01 or university someday. 00:30:19.05\00:30:21.18 I thought of it as any other job 00:30:21.22\00:30:22.58 when I first joined Christalis, but to my surprise 00:30:22.62\00:30:25.19 it changed my view about the world. 00:30:25.22\00:30:27.06 I go to the villages, and visit 00:30:27.09\00:30:28.86 the assistance program children. 00:30:28.89\00:30:31.09 The assistance program is for children 00:30:31.13\00:30:33.16 who have a home that can provide them 00:30:33.19\00:30:35.70 with food and shelter but does not have 00:30:35.73\00:30:38.60 the financial ability to send them to school. 00:30:38.63\00:30:41.44 Every child I visit is so very thankful 00:30:41.47\00:30:43.77 that they are able to attend school. 00:30:43.81\00:30:45.81 Each child in the assistance program 00:30:45.84\00:30:47.78 will not be able to attend school 00:30:47.81\00:30:49.44 without the support from Christalis. 00:30:49.48\00:30:51.65 Instead, they would be most likely working 00:30:51.68\00:30:54.22 in the fields with their parents, 00:30:54.25\00:30:56.08 or in the streets trying to make a sustainable living. 00:30:56.12\00:30:59.49 I remember the day he came to the home 00:31:03.22\00:31:05.89 for the first time. 00:31:05.93\00:31:07.43 He was filthy clothes, full of thorns and webs on it, 00:31:07.46\00:31:11.83 had no shoes on and his feet were filled 00:31:11.87\00:31:14.74 with mud from his feet to his knees. 00:31:14.77\00:31:17.97 We bought him a new set of clothes, 00:31:18.01\00:31:19.91 we helped him bath. 00:31:19.94\00:31:21.28 As we were doing that we noticed that 00:31:21.31\00:31:22.64 he had a lot of scars on his back. 00:31:22.68\00:31:25.61 Apparently, Joel was caught stealing 00:31:25.65\00:31:28.02 a little bit of money from his mother, 00:31:28.05\00:31:30.09 she ended up taking him to the police station 00:31:30.12\00:31:32.15 to be beaten. 00:31:32.19\00:31:33.52 And there Joel was beaten terribly, 00:31:33.56\00:31:35.86 and he was left with some heavy scars on his body. 00:31:35.89\00:31:39.36 Then Joel was kicked out of his home 00:31:39.39\00:31:41.63 and he was left to fend on the streets for himself. 00:31:41.66\00:31:44.60 We decided to give him his new bed sheets, 00:31:44.63\00:31:47.10 he hugged them tight and he ended up 00:31:47.14\00:31:48.97 dancing around the room because he was so happy 00:31:49.00\00:31:51.31 that he had a new bed to sleep on for himself. 00:31:51.34\00:31:54.84 We were learning about the story of Joseph 00:31:54.88\00:31:57.15 and Joel's response was heartbreaking. 00:31:57.18\00:31:59.91 Each child told us what they had gone 00:31:59.95\00:32:01.92 from the story, and Joel said that 00:32:01.95\00:32:05.35 no matter what we should always go to our family 00:32:05.39\00:32:10.53 even if they don't love us that we should always go 00:32:10.56\00:32:12.53 back to them. 00:32:12.56\00:32:14.03 And you can tell from that sentence that 00:32:14.06\00:32:16.03 there was a lot more meaning behind it. 00:32:16.06\00:32:18.53 If you were to see Joel today, 00:32:18.57\00:32:20.90 he is a completely different child, 00:32:20.94\00:32:23.00 he is so happy, he has so much love to offer, 00:32:23.04\00:32:26.27 he is always jumping up and down, 00:32:26.31\00:32:28.84 and clinging on to our arms, he is excited to learn, 00:32:28.88\00:32:32.61 keeps begging us to go to school 00:32:32.65\00:32:34.35 so we are just waiting for a sponsor for him. 00:32:34.38\00:32:36.99 It's hard to know that there are so many 00:32:37.02\00:32:38.72 other children out here in the same condition, 00:32:38.75\00:32:41.76 and we hope that they can all be helped through Christalis 00:32:41.79\00:32:45.29 and through our dedicated donors. 00:32:45.33\00:32:47.40 There are over 300 children waiting for sponsors 00:32:47.43\00:32:50.33 so that they can attend school. 00:32:50.37\00:32:52.17 Christalis does as much as they can, 00:32:52.20\00:32:54.14 but we need sponsors in order to help them. 00:32:54.17\00:32:56.34 Oh, that is so exciting. 00:33:01.88\00:33:03.21 Walk me through, Shalini, 00:33:03.24\00:33:05.18 if you will the sponsorship program? 00:33:05.21\00:33:08.52 What that entails and what you're seeking to do? 00:33:08.55\00:33:10.59 Sure. 00:33:10.62\00:33:11.95 So like in our home we still have about 10 children 00:33:11.99\00:33:14.29 who need sponsorship. 00:33:14.32\00:33:15.86 So a sponsor chooses a child that they wanted to support. 00:33:15.89\00:33:19.19 It really takes about $120 per month, 00:33:19.23\00:33:21.73 but that's not always easy for everybody 00:33:21.76\00:33:24.03 so sometimes we split it like $80, $60, $40 00:33:24.07\00:33:26.77 and we'll give you children to choose from, 00:33:26.80\00:33:28.77 and then you can write letters to them, send pictures, 00:33:28.80\00:33:30.81 the kids love to get it, then they write back, 00:33:30.84\00:33:32.94 and they send their pictures. 00:33:32.97\00:33:34.51 And that's in the home in the orphanage 00:33:34.54\00:33:37.81 that we spoke about, then we have the assistance program 00:33:37.85\00:33:39.88 the one that Dillon spoke about in the video, 00:33:39.91\00:33:41.78 and in that program we have about 700 children 00:33:41.82\00:33:44.39 waiting for help. 00:33:44.42\00:33:45.75 And this year we have 67 kids 00:33:45.79\00:33:47.99 who cannot continue their education 00:33:48.02\00:33:50.06 if we don't get sponsors and school 00:33:50.09\00:33:51.83 just started last week. 00:33:51.86\00:33:53.36 And so there it's $20 per month for a child 00:33:53.40\00:33:58.13 in elementary school we call primary, 00:33:58.17\00:34:00.27 and $40 per month in secondary school, 00:34:00.30\00:34:02.87 and then as the education gets higher 00:34:02.90\00:34:04.64 like if they go for certificate level 00:34:04.67\00:34:06.17 or post-secondary it goes to like $50, $60, $70 00:34:06.21\00:34:09.31 and if you're supporting someone in university 00:34:09.34\00:34:11.58 about a $100 to $120 per month. 00:34:11.61\00:34:13.88 It's still not, in our money, a fabulous sum of money, 00:34:13.92\00:34:18.29 it's manageable, you can do with some level of... 00:34:18.32\00:34:23.02 So these are, they're in public school. 00:34:23.06\00:34:25.33 Not all of them we have, like, our home kids most of them 00:34:25.36\00:34:27.96 are in Adventist schools. 00:34:28.00\00:34:29.33 Okay. Yeah. 00:34:29.36\00:34:30.70 And in the assistance program also we try our level best 00:34:30.73\00:34:34.04 to put them in Adventist schools, 00:34:34.07\00:34:35.40 but sometimes depending on where they live 00:34:35.44\00:34:37.41 there isn't a school nearby, 00:34:37.44\00:34:39.17 and their means of transport is walking, 00:34:39.21\00:34:42.04 so sometimes we don't want like 00:34:42.08\00:34:43.75 six year olds or seven year olds 00:34:43.78\00:34:45.11 walking long distances in the night by themselves, 00:34:45.15\00:34:47.12 so then we try to put them in a school closest to them. 00:34:47.15\00:34:50.09 So we're dealing with two populations, 00:34:50.12\00:34:52.05 we've got in home residents and others 00:34:52.09\00:34:56.36 who are assisting who don't live in the home 00:34:56.39\00:34:57.96 but live in other places, but you're trying to help them 00:34:57.99\00:35:00.13 through the system as well. 00:35:00.16\00:35:01.50 Yeah, because we found that, you know, around us 00:35:01.53\00:35:04.17 there were a lot of kids who needed help, 00:35:04.20\00:35:05.90 sometimes families would lie to get them into the home, 00:35:05.93\00:35:08.70 and sometimes they live, you know, 00:35:08.74\00:35:10.11 they're eating one meal a day 00:35:10.14\00:35:11.67 or they're not going to school at all 00:35:11.71\00:35:13.17 and they need help. 00:35:13.21\00:35:15.41 And that's very sponsor driven because we don't have the money 00:35:15.44\00:35:18.28 if we don't have the sponsor we can't help them. 00:35:18.31\00:35:20.48 You can't do, yeah. Yeah. 00:35:20.52\00:35:21.85 And we support over 200 children 00:35:21.88\00:35:24.75 in that program. 00:35:24.79\00:35:26.12 Wow! 00:35:26.15\00:35:27.49 See your numbers are growing, 00:35:27.52\00:35:28.86 I mean, you're making an impact. 00:35:28.89\00:35:33.66 How is the government impacted 00:35:33.70\00:35:36.93 about what you do, are they assisting you, 00:35:36.97\00:35:38.53 are they, is it a sort of benign kind of thing, 00:35:38.57\00:35:40.50 do you get any hostility from them, 00:35:40.54\00:35:42.27 are they settling into what you're doing? 00:35:42.30\00:35:44.47 We don't get any hostility. Good. 00:35:44.51\00:35:46.17 They're very supportive and they're happy 00:35:46.21\00:35:47.68 for what we're doing, 00:35:47.71\00:35:49.04 but we don't have any kind of help from them, 00:35:49.08\00:35:51.75 they don't help in funding or anything like that. 00:35:51.78\00:35:54.92 But, yeah, there we have no problem. 00:35:54.95\00:35:56.89 Good to you. 00:35:56.92\00:35:58.25 Let's take a look at some pictures 00:35:58.29\00:35:59.62 and then you can tell us what we're seeing. 00:35:59.65\00:36:00.99 Okay. Okay. 00:36:01.02\00:36:02.36 So that's our kids doing activity, 00:36:05.89\00:36:08.00 we have Global Rise there right now 00:36:08.03\00:36:09.93 and they're teaching them about nutrition 00:36:09.96\00:36:11.30 and healthy eating. 00:36:11.33\00:36:12.67 And so we like to do things to help them. 00:36:12.70\00:36:15.90 You know, part of our mission is to give them opportunities 00:36:15.94\00:36:18.57 to succeed, and that's not always necessarily education, 00:36:18.61\00:36:21.58 they also need life skills and, you know, 00:36:21.61\00:36:23.48 how to deal with life so, like, when every time I go 00:36:23.51\00:36:25.98 so for about four times, we do vision boards with them. 00:36:26.01\00:36:29.18 So the kids, you know, do their vision board 00:36:29.22\00:36:30.82 what they want to do and have them put it 00:36:30.85\00:36:32.19 by their bed or their cupboard 00:36:32.22\00:36:33.56 so they pray over it every year. 00:36:33.59\00:36:34.92 So we try to do different things 00:36:34.96\00:36:36.29 to help the kids. 00:36:36.32\00:36:37.66 Okay, next one. 00:36:37.69\00:36:39.16 This is Balaku, he is one of our children 00:36:39.19\00:36:41.86 in our assistance program. 00:36:41.90\00:36:43.23 He was the first child, not first, second child 00:36:43.26\00:36:44.73 with disabilities that we helped. 00:36:44.77\00:36:46.20 He had speech and hearing problems, 00:36:46.23\00:36:47.57 and we put him in a special education school 00:36:47.60\00:36:49.67 thanks to a sponsor. 00:36:49.70\00:36:51.07 Praise the Lord. 00:36:51.11\00:36:53.64 This is Schlori and Viola, they are eight and seven now 00:36:53.68\00:36:57.71 and so there's a picture with them with toys, 00:36:57.75\00:36:59.38 so it's one of the things like in our mission, you know, 00:36:59.41\00:37:01.15 when I saw those kids, it's not just about 00:37:01.18\00:37:02.85 the food and the education. 00:37:02.88\00:37:04.65 We want to give them everything we give our kids here 00:37:04.69\00:37:06.69 so what I give Eva, I want them to have. 00:37:06.72\00:37:08.62 That's one of my happiest things 00:37:08.66\00:37:10.13 is to take them toys because so they're excited for it. 00:37:10.16\00:37:13.09 And these two little girls actually they were abandoned 00:37:13.13\00:37:15.83 by their parents two, three years ago. 00:37:15.86\00:37:18.00 And they were just left there 00:37:18.03\00:37:19.60 and so an old lady in the community 00:37:19.63\00:37:21.00 took them into care for them, 00:37:21.04\00:37:22.60 and she was just getting old, she couldn't care for them. 00:37:22.64\00:37:24.64 We found them in a really bad state, 00:37:24.67\00:37:26.41 they're just so precious. 00:37:26.44\00:37:28.11 I love them. Praise the Lord. 00:37:28.14\00:37:31.31 And that's our kids eating so that's one of the things 00:37:31.35\00:37:33.68 when we first started when Yvonne started 00:37:33.72\00:37:35.12 when she asked them, what is the thing you like most 00:37:35.15\00:37:37.39 about the home? 00:37:37.42\00:37:38.75 And they said three meals a day, 00:37:38.79\00:37:40.46 was what they like the most so that's just a picture 00:37:40.49\00:37:42.56 of the food we give them. 00:37:42.59\00:37:44.09 Praise the Lord. 00:37:44.13\00:37:45.53 And that's our home that Walla Walla University 00:37:45.56\00:37:47.50 helped us build. 00:37:47.53\00:37:48.86 That's our home. 00:37:48.90\00:37:50.23 And if you see there's a shed to the left of it 00:37:50.27\00:37:52.00 that's just made out of a board we're hoping one day 00:37:52.03\00:37:54.94 God will give us another miracle 00:37:54.97\00:37:56.71 that we could build an office space 00:37:56.74\00:37:58.07 and volunteer quarters there. 00:37:58.11\00:38:00.68 And that's Renee and Heidi in the picture walking our kids 00:38:00.71\00:38:04.11 to school when we lived in the old home. 00:38:04.15\00:38:08.95 And that's a group picture so in the middle 00:38:08.98\00:38:10.45 there's our daughter Nusra that I was talking to you about, 00:38:10.49\00:38:12.99 so this was last November. 00:38:13.02\00:38:14.49 And that's all our kids. 00:38:14.52\00:38:15.86 So that's one of the things, you know, 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.23 just like if Eva graduated our whole family would go. 00:38:17.26\00:38:20.43 So we took all her brothers and sisters there 00:38:20.46\00:38:23.87 to see her graduation, and same with Menes, 00:38:23.90\00:38:26.77 and Menes and his stories actually released... 00:38:26.80\00:38:29.64 Amazing. 00:38:29.67\00:38:31.01 When he was a toddler, 00:38:31.04\00:38:32.37 he walked from the Congo to Rwanda 00:38:32.41\00:38:34.28 and that's where his parents passed away in Rwanda, 00:38:34.31\00:38:36.58 and his grandmother came and took all his siblings 00:38:36.61\00:38:39.25 with her to 'cause they say where we are, 00:38:39.28\00:38:41.05 but she can't afford to take care of them 00:38:41.08\00:38:42.42 so she put them in different homes 00:38:42.45\00:38:43.79 and they worked to stay there. 00:38:43.82\00:38:45.29 And he would go to school but no one to pay his fees, 00:38:45.32\00:38:48.16 and he was smart so they would give him 00:38:48.19\00:38:49.79 old school books, they took him off the roster, 00:38:49.82\00:38:51.73 and then when we came they brought him to us. 00:38:51.76\00:38:53.66 And so we were so blessed to have him and right now 00:38:53.70\00:38:57.07 he is our first graduate 00:38:57.10\00:38:58.73 in secondary education is what he did. 00:38:58.77\00:39:00.27 And now he's doing on a scholarship 00:39:00.30\00:39:02.00 a master's in South Korea. 00:39:02.04\00:39:03.67 Wow! Yeah. 00:39:03.71\00:39:05.21 Praise the Lord. Yeah. 00:39:05.24\00:39:06.71 It was amazing. Excellent. 00:39:06.74\00:39:08.08 That's the picture of Renee and her kids. 00:39:08.11\00:39:12.81 Renee, you look very happy there. 00:39:12.85\00:39:14.38 I was very happy there. 00:39:14.42\00:39:18.72 This is a picture of us giving mosquito nets and Bibles, 00:39:18.75\00:39:21.36 so once when one of our little girl, 00:39:21.39\00:39:23.89 that's one of our donor, she donated solar lights 00:39:23.93\00:39:26.59 because one of the kids in our assistance program 00:39:26.63\00:39:28.33 said that they don't have, you know, 00:39:28.36\00:39:30.00 almost all of them have electricity 00:39:30.03\00:39:31.57 in the assistance program so they said, 00:39:31.60\00:39:33.13 they would have trouble studying at night. 00:39:33.17\00:39:35.40 So we got these little solar nights 00:39:35.44\00:39:37.01 that, actually, I saw when Heidi and Renee 00:39:37.04\00:39:38.67 brought up for themselves. 00:39:38.71\00:39:40.04 And so we were provided that for all the kids 00:39:40.08\00:39:42.04 in the assistance program. 00:39:42.08\00:39:43.41 And when we were doing that, I was talking to them 00:39:43.45\00:39:45.95 and they were saying... 00:39:45.98\00:39:48.08 I was talking to them about having morning devotion 00:39:48.12\00:39:49.62 before they go to school. 00:39:49.65\00:39:50.99 And they all were saying they don't have Bibles, 00:39:51.02\00:39:52.92 so Washington Adventist University 00:39:52.95\00:39:54.52 raised money to purchase Bibles for them. 00:39:54.56\00:39:57.26 And then once when I was in the airport, 00:39:57.29\00:39:58.99 I wanted to provide mosquito nets 00:39:59.03\00:40:00.43 because malaria is huge there. 00:40:00.46\00:40:02.13 And once when I was in the airport 00:40:02.16\00:40:03.73 just waiting for my connecting flight 00:40:03.77\00:40:05.43 there was these people with this t-shirt 00:40:05.47\00:40:07.40 it says 2400dollar.org. 00:40:07.44\00:40:09.27 And so I asked them what they did 00:40:09.30\00:40:10.94 or it said nets 24 something like that, 00:40:10.97\00:40:13.11 and they provide mosquito nets in Uganda. 00:40:13.14\00:40:15.28 And so they donated mosquito nets for all the kids 00:40:15.31\00:40:17.28 in our assistance program. 00:40:17.31\00:40:18.65 Praise the Lord. Yeah, it's a miracle. 00:40:18.68\00:40:20.42 The Lord seems to provide what you need when you need it. 00:40:20.45\00:40:22.92 Yeah. Sometimes even before you ask. 00:40:22.95\00:40:24.55 Yes. Yeah, do we have any more? 00:40:24.59\00:40:26.79 There we go. 00:40:26.82\00:40:28.16 That's a picture of a family we were trying to help 00:40:28.19\00:40:29.86 through our family development program. 00:40:29.89\00:40:31.89 So, you know, we're not always going to be there 00:40:31.93\00:40:33.90 say there's some sort of war something happens 00:40:33.93\00:40:35.56 and we are gone. 00:40:35.60\00:40:36.93 We want to be able to know that these kids will continue 00:40:36.97\00:40:39.30 to go to school, continue to get help 00:40:39.33\00:40:40.84 so we're thinking if we can equip the parents, 00:40:40.87\00:40:43.14 educate them, help them come up, 00:40:43.17\00:40:44.87 then they can become self-sufficient 00:40:44.91\00:40:46.44 to care of the kids themselves. 00:40:46.47\00:40:47.94 So it's a holistic program where we look 00:40:47.98\00:40:50.65 at all their needs, physical, emotional, financial, 00:40:50.68\00:40:54.58 and help them in each area to take care of themselves 00:40:54.62\00:40:57.09 so the plan is it goes over a span of years, 00:40:57.12\00:40:59.99 maybe three to five years 00:41:00.02\00:41:01.36 till they can become self-sufficient, 00:41:01.39\00:41:02.99 and give them income generating project, 00:41:03.02\00:41:04.69 and they give us certain percentage back 00:41:04.73\00:41:06.49 that goes into helping them for a while, 00:41:06.53\00:41:08.23 and then after that other families, 00:41:08.26\00:41:10.03 but we haven't had the funding to really follow through. 00:41:10.07\00:41:13.03 We started with five or six families, 00:41:13.07\00:41:14.64 but haven't been able to continue. 00:41:14.67\00:41:16.10 Powerful. 00:41:16.14\00:41:17.47 You know, I've got a statement I'm going to make, 00:41:17.51\00:41:18.84 I'll wait till the end of these pictures, 00:41:18.87\00:41:20.21 but I see something that I think 00:41:20.24\00:41:22.04 is really a God blessing. 00:41:22.08\00:41:23.41 But are we out of pictures or we have some more? 00:41:23.45\00:41:25.45 Okay. 00:41:25.48\00:41:28.58 One of the things I see that you're doing is trying to... 00:41:28.62\00:41:31.69 Because you are basically an orphanage, 00:41:31.72\00:41:35.12 but you are casting a very wide net, in fact, 00:41:35.16\00:41:38.69 the widest possible net as far as community 00:41:38.73\00:41:42.13 and social impact above and beyond 00:41:42.16\00:41:44.97 just a place where children come off the streets 00:41:45.00\00:41:47.57 and get three meals and get the knowledge of God. 00:41:47.60\00:41:50.14 You're back in the streets and you are affecting families 00:41:50.17\00:41:54.71 in a very broad, broad way. 00:41:54.74\00:41:57.75 Is that the mandate that you had in your mind 00:41:57.78\00:42:00.72 when you began or did you just kind of mission creep into that 00:42:00.75\00:42:04.39 with the help of your board? 00:42:04.42\00:42:05.82 Because you're more than just a place 00:42:05.85\00:42:07.76 where kids can stay, you're actually moving back 00:42:07.79\00:42:10.39 to the community and casting a really wide net there, 00:42:10.43\00:42:14.00 is that what you had in your mind 00:42:14.03\00:42:15.46 or just kind of grow into that? 00:42:15.50\00:42:17.47 I think that's what I had in mind, 00:42:17.50\00:42:19.53 I think what I have in mind or what God put in my heart 00:42:19.57\00:42:22.70 is even wider than that. 00:42:22.74\00:42:25.31 It's huge. 00:42:25.34\00:42:28.41 I think the desire is to help any kid in need, 00:42:28.44\00:42:32.25 any kid who is crying for help. 00:42:32.28\00:42:34.88 It's not just the ones that don't have a home, 00:42:34.92\00:42:37.59 they're one suffering for no food and suffering 00:42:37.62\00:42:40.26 because they're being abused or exploited 00:42:40.29\00:42:42.66 so it's a desire to help to show our love 00:42:42.69\00:42:46.63 for all those kids in however way 00:42:46.66\00:42:49.20 God enables us to. 00:42:49.23\00:42:52.17 I'm so very, very impressed. 00:42:52.20\00:42:53.64 I've been to Uganda and you don't have to have 00:42:53.67\00:42:58.17 binoculars to see, I mean, with your eyes 00:42:58.21\00:43:01.21 you can see the need on the street 00:43:01.24\00:43:03.85 typically of young children who are either parent less 00:43:03.88\00:43:08.15 or their parents just can't take care of them, 00:43:08.18\00:43:10.89 you can see it so you're addressing that. 00:43:10.92\00:43:14.69 That's a very big need, isn't it? 00:43:14.72\00:43:16.59 Yeah. Yeah, all over the world. 00:43:16.62\00:43:19.66 All over the world. 00:43:19.69\00:43:21.26 Well, one at a time, you know, 00:43:21.30\00:43:25.23 that's what you can do, one at a time. 00:43:25.27\00:43:26.84 And to that one child it's their world, 00:43:26.87\00:43:28.90 they don't know about the other kids. 00:43:28.94\00:43:30.27 Yes, yes, yes, indeed. Praise the Lord. 00:43:30.31\00:43:34.91 I noticed and I was happy to see that the place 00:43:34.94\00:43:38.01 where your house is, your home is, 00:43:38.05\00:43:40.35 it's not in the heart of the city, 00:43:40.38\00:43:41.85 it's out a little ways. 00:43:41.88\00:43:43.22 Yeah, we're about 15 minutes out 00:43:43.25\00:43:44.62 and we're up in the mountains, it's beautiful 00:43:44.65\00:43:46.59 when you come there the next time you go there, 00:43:46.62\00:43:48.89 you will see how beautiful it is. 00:43:48.92\00:43:50.36 I mean, I think it's technically hills, 00:43:50.39\00:43:51.93 but it looks like mountains to me. 00:43:51.96\00:43:53.60 So like all around are green mountains 00:43:53.63\00:43:55.80 when you wake up in the morning... 00:43:55.83\00:43:57.17 And when I go there I love to have Sabbath sundown worship 00:43:57.20\00:43:59.70 in the front 'cause you're just in nature 00:43:59.73\00:44:02.47 as you sing and it's just beautiful. 00:44:02.50\00:44:05.11 Yeah, praise the Lord. That is so very, very fabulous. 00:44:05.14\00:44:09.41 When you go out and make presentations 00:44:09.44\00:44:12.25 is your target audience, do you go to colleges, 00:44:12.28\00:44:15.12 high schools, all of the above, churches, 00:44:15.15\00:44:18.72 who do you try to target 00:44:18.75\00:44:20.26 as far as the kind of assistance that you need? 00:44:20.29\00:44:22.12 Anybody, everywhere wherever God takes us. 00:44:22.16\00:44:26.76 I mean, I have donors who are six 00:44:26.80\00:44:30.10 and seven years old. 00:44:30.13\00:44:32.10 We have one little girl 00:44:32.13\00:44:33.47 who does chores around the house 00:44:33.50\00:44:34.84 and donates like $300, $500 every year 00:44:34.87\00:44:37.67 to support a child. 00:44:37.71\00:44:39.17 She must be eight or nine. 00:44:39.21\00:44:40.78 My daughter gives money and volunteers like, you know, 00:44:40.81\00:44:45.51 from students and, you know, in the university 00:44:45.55\00:44:47.45 I will sign them up for $0.25 per month. 00:44:47.48\00:44:50.32 It makes a difference. 00:44:50.35\00:44:52.45 It doesn't matter how old, how young even volunteering, 00:44:52.49\00:44:55.29 if you cannot go to Uganda and you want to volunteer here, 00:44:55.32\00:44:58.79 you know, retired or high school, 00:44:58.83\00:45:02.06 elementary school we have a place for everyone. 00:45:02.10\00:45:05.37 We're going to put up some contact information 00:45:05.40\00:45:07.27 in just a few moments for those who may want to help. 00:45:07.30\00:45:10.94 But I'm thinking given the broad base kinds of needs 00:45:10.97\00:45:15.81 that an orphanage home would have, 00:45:15.84\00:45:19.65 anybody with stuff to get over there, I mean, 00:45:19.68\00:45:23.59 good stuff could be of assistance. 00:45:23.62\00:45:26.15 Clothing for young children, soap, toothpaste, 00:45:26.19\00:45:32.23 those kinds of things, can you use 00:45:32.26\00:45:33.60 that kind of stuff also? 00:45:33.63\00:45:34.96 It's the only problem is taking it over there 00:45:35.00\00:45:36.73 is expensive like shipping is expensive, 00:45:36.77\00:45:38.70 sometimes it doesn't get there, like, we lost two barrels once, 00:45:38.73\00:45:41.77 it never got there. 00:45:41.80\00:45:43.17 And then I take it with me when I take an extra suitcase 00:45:43.20\00:45:47.18 and you have to pay like, you know, $250 or $270 00:45:47.21\00:45:50.28 for each extra suitcase. 00:45:50.31\00:45:51.88 So that's the only challenge with taking stuff over there. 00:45:51.91\00:45:55.52 It's easier if we go there and purchase it, 00:45:55.55\00:45:58.05 some things I try to take over because it's better 00:45:58.09\00:45:59.92 to take from here than there, like, shoes 00:45:59.95\00:46:03.16 and maybe bags and stuff. 00:46:03.19\00:46:04.99 Some things are more expensive there, 00:46:05.03\00:46:07.06 but other things it's just easier to get. 00:46:07.10\00:46:09.40 So it's better really just to send cash 00:46:09.43\00:46:11.53 and then get it locally rather than trying to ship? 00:46:11.57\00:46:13.77 And then we take pictures and send it to donors 00:46:13.80\00:46:17.24 so you'll see it. 00:46:17.27\00:46:20.41 Praise the Lord. This is so very, very exciting. 00:46:20.44\00:46:22.41 As you look back over the 14, 13 years 00:46:22.44\00:46:27.12 that you've been in existence, walk me through 00:46:27.15\00:46:31.32 what to you was the greatest miracle, 00:46:31.35\00:46:33.66 the greatest sign that this was a God thing 00:46:33.69\00:46:36.46 and that God was in it? 00:46:36.49\00:46:38.69 Wow! There is a million signs. 00:46:38.73\00:46:41.76 Well, give your top two. Only top two. 00:46:41.80\00:46:46.57 I think one is a general, I think like Renee said 00:46:46.60\00:46:49.17 every time I go there, and I see the children, 00:46:49.20\00:46:52.17 I know their stories. 00:46:52.21\00:46:53.74 I know what's happened to them. 00:46:53.78\00:46:55.21 I know inside what they've been through, 00:46:55.24\00:46:58.48 and yet you will never see it in their faces 00:46:58.51\00:47:01.62 or in how they behave or anything, the joy, 00:47:01.65\00:47:05.15 the happiness, the security, the love, you know, 00:47:05.19\00:47:10.33 that shows me that all the... 00:47:10.36\00:47:12.49 This is not easy, you know, when you talk about things 00:47:12.53\00:47:15.66 it's easy to think that everything is smooth sailing, 00:47:15.70\00:47:17.73 but it's not, life is so hard but when you see those kids 00:47:17.77\00:47:22.80 and see how it's affecting them, 00:47:22.84\00:47:25.11 that is the biggest sign for me that, you know, 00:47:25.14\00:47:28.38 this is what God, you know, wants us to do. 00:47:28.41\00:47:31.95 And then it's just repeated, I think it's a cycle, 00:47:31.98\00:47:35.85 the first one I think when I kind of 00:47:35.88\00:47:37.42 'cause I was really desperate, I was just it's hard, right, 00:47:37.45\00:47:41.12 when you're doing ministry. 00:47:41.16\00:47:42.76 And I was at a point and I was like, "God, 00:47:42.79\00:47:44.16 am I doing what I want because everyone tells me 00:47:44.19\00:47:45.99 I'm doing what I want. 00:47:46.03\00:47:47.36 And I'm really not doing what you want." 00:47:47.40\00:47:49.36 So I was just on my knees praying, I was like, "God, 00:47:49.40\00:47:52.33 if really I'm being selfish and I'm doing the wrong thing, 00:47:52.37\00:47:56.64 I need you to show me a miracle if it's the right thing, 00:47:56.67\00:47:59.37 and I just want a big donation, just a flat big donation 00:47:59.41\00:48:03.04 'cause I've never received like Yvonne would talk to people 00:48:03.08\00:48:05.01 and she would get a huge donations 00:48:05.05\00:48:06.85 but, you know, like I said, I'm not a good sales person. 00:48:06.88\00:48:09.45 So I was like, "God, I need something huge 00:48:09.48\00:48:12.19 that I know this is what you want me to do." 00:48:12.22\00:48:14.46 And that weekend Pastor Wyclee on behalf of the conference 00:48:14.49\00:48:21.00 donated $5,000 to start our building fund. 00:48:21.03\00:48:25.13 And so for me that was the pivotal like 00:48:25.17\00:48:27.40 'cause I had asked God I need a big sign. 00:48:27.44\00:48:30.31 And then but then, you know, the devil, 00:48:30.34\00:48:31.84 he knows where to get you so I go down 00:48:31.87\00:48:35.78 and God just completely shows miracles 00:48:35.81\00:48:37.91 like the Walla Walla University, like the grant, 00:48:37.95\00:48:40.55 and it's just multiple miracle after miracle. 00:48:40.58\00:48:43.82 I know that pastor and praise the Lord for that. 00:48:43.85\00:48:46.72 It occurred to me sometimes when you bite off 00:48:46.76\00:48:49.39 such a big chunk of social service 00:48:49.42\00:48:53.23 that it can get you down. 00:48:53.26\00:48:55.60 The plane rides, the dealing with day to day activities, 00:48:55.63\00:48:59.27 you know, in time can get you down, 00:48:59.30\00:49:00.90 but I guess the Lord finds a way 00:49:00.94\00:49:02.27 to kind of boost you back up, yeah. 00:49:02.30\00:49:04.44 Yeah, yeah, just when you're about to be done, 00:49:04.47\00:49:08.28 God just brings you something huge 00:49:08.31\00:49:10.15 and you're like, "Oh, yes, back into it. 00:49:10.18\00:49:12.95 Praise the Lord. 00:49:12.98\00:49:14.52 Renee, you've been quiet for a little bit, 00:49:14.55\00:49:16.92 when is the last time you were over? 00:49:16.95\00:49:19.62 So 2016, I got to go back, and I left in 2015, 00:49:19.65\00:49:24.26 and then in 2016 I got to go back just for a week. 00:49:24.29\00:49:27.20 Shalini was over there and she invited 00:49:27.23\00:49:29.20 Heidi and I had to go back. 00:49:29.23\00:49:30.57 And so it was really great to see the kids again. 00:49:30.60\00:49:33.64 We had never actually seen the new orphanage, 00:49:33.67\00:49:35.34 it was still being built while we lived there, 00:49:35.37\00:49:37.34 and so just to see the new home, 00:49:37.37\00:49:39.34 and see all the kids again, just be back in Uganda 00:49:39.37\00:49:42.14 because, I mean, it's one of my favorite places 00:49:42.18\00:49:44.41 in the world. 00:49:44.45\00:49:45.85 Of course, I miss the kids when I'm over here 00:49:45.88\00:49:48.05 so just being able to see them again and... 00:49:48.08\00:49:51.55 And they love them. 00:49:51.59\00:49:53.25 Kids love Renee, Aunty Renee, Aunty Heidi, 00:49:53.29\00:49:57.73 Uncle Dillon, they love the children. 00:49:57.76\00:50:00.33 Yeah, you've got a little fan club there. 00:50:00.36\00:50:02.36 Praise the Lord. And they seem so happy. 00:50:02.40\00:50:05.40 They seem really, really happy. 00:50:05.43\00:50:08.07 Do you ever get any parents or relatives who come 00:50:08.10\00:50:12.54 and say thank you for what you're doing. 00:50:12.57\00:50:14.38 Do you get that kind of affirmation there in Uganda? 00:50:14.41\00:50:17.11 Oh, yeah, they're very grateful. 00:50:17.15\00:50:20.68 Once we even got a goat because we were able to 00:50:20.72\00:50:23.25 because of a donor do a heart surgery for a child, 00:50:23.28\00:50:26.09 congenital defect and they had to wait 00:50:26.12\00:50:28.49 till she was three years old, and it was expensive 00:50:28.52\00:50:30.73 $3,000, $4, 000 and so she brought a goat 00:50:30.76\00:50:34.46 and like plate stuff she made, and they were waiting for me 00:50:34.50\00:50:37.10 to come to kill it and eat it. 00:50:37.13\00:50:38.83 And I was like, "No, I'm not killing the goat." 00:50:38.87\00:50:41.10 So the goat became our pet, we got another one 00:50:41.14\00:50:45.51 and so now we're producing goats 00:50:45.54\00:50:47.01 to sell for the kids. 00:50:47.04\00:50:48.98 Praise the Lord. 00:50:49.01\00:50:50.35 Yeah, they're grateful, they are. 00:50:50.38\00:50:51.71 Anyway you make money to support the program. 00:50:51.75\00:50:55.58 Before our time gets away from us, 00:50:55.62\00:50:56.95 I want to do just couple of things. 00:50:56.99\00:50:58.79 You've gotten sort of now the texture 00:50:58.82\00:51:01.59 of what this ministry does, and the broad net 00:51:01.62\00:51:04.46 that it tosses as we're over the part of Uganda 00:51:04.49\00:51:10.17 that God has given them as their mission field, 00:51:10.20\00:51:12.33 the work that they're doing is wonderful, 00:51:12.37\00:51:14.57 and it is being blessed by the Lord. 00:51:14.60\00:51:17.04 I always like to be involved in things that I know 00:51:17.07\00:51:19.14 are part of what God's plan is, and I assure this is part 00:51:19.17\00:51:22.98 of God's plan not only for Shalini and Renee, 00:51:23.01\00:51:26.98 but for Uganda and for those 00:51:27.02\00:51:28.82 that are part of their volunteer core 00:51:28.85\00:51:31.59 and the work that they're doing. 00:51:31.62\00:51:32.95 Should you want to assist them financially, 00:51:32.99\00:51:37.43 certainly we ask you to pray for them, 00:51:37.46\00:51:38.99 but if you want to assist them financially, 00:51:39.03\00:51:40.86 and we encourage you to do so 00:51:40.90\00:51:42.23 in the strongest terms, this is a great, great work, 00:51:42.26\00:51:45.13 or if you have time and want to make contact 00:51:45.17\00:51:47.77 with this ministry, here's the information 00:51:47.80\00:51:50.11 that you're going to need. 00:51:50.14\00:51:53.71 If you would like to help change 00:51:53.74\00:51:55.08 the life of an orphan child in Uganda, 00:51:55.11\00:51:57.75 the Christalis home provides a family atmosphere 00:51:57.78\00:52:01.05 with family worships, study, and playtime 00:52:01.08\00:52:04.29 as well as worship time each day. 00:52:04.32\00:52:06.86 You may also help provide other children 00:52:06.89\00:52:09.06 with healthcare and education 00:52:09.09\00:52:10.89 through the Christalis assistance program. 00:52:10.93\00:52:13.50 Visit their website, Christalis. org 00:52:13.53\00:52:16.23 to find out more. 00:52:16.26\00:52:17.80 That's Christalis. org. 00:52:17.83\00:52:20.60 You may also call them at area code (240) 772-1131 00:52:20.64\00:52:27.18 or write to them at Christalis 14611, 00:52:27.21\00:52:31.31 Blackburn Road, Burtonsville, Maryland 20866. 00:52:31.35\00:52:36.25
