That was the beginning. 00:04:15.02\00:04:16.38 Wonderful. 00:04:16.42\00:04:17.75 Well, before we get into the meet 00:04:17.79\00:04:19.85 of this interview, Jim, tell... 00:04:19.89\00:04:22.76 Many of our viewers 00:04:22.79\00:04:24.13 may not have heard of Ellen White, 00:04:24.16\00:04:26.33 they don't know what role she played in God's kingdom. 00:04:26.36\00:04:31.53 So tell us something about Ellen White. 00:04:31.57\00:04:35.30 Well, to keep it brief because she lived to be '87, 00:04:35.34\00:04:38.54 so you could go on and on and on. 00:04:38.57\00:04:39.94 But to keep it brief. 00:04:39.97\00:04:41.64 She was born in Maine in 1827, 00:04:41.68\00:04:45.48 lived out her life much of in the United States, 00:04:45.51\00:04:48.65 but also two years in Europe in the 1880s, 00:04:48.68\00:04:51.45 nine years in Australia, in the 1890s, 00:04:51.49\00:04:54.42 died in California, 1915. 00:04:54.46\00:04:56.06 Now that's the very, 00:04:56.09\00:04:57.69 very, very small view of her life. 00:04:57.73\00:05:01.00 She as a young girl, had a terrible accident, 00:05:01.03\00:05:05.23 that affected her health for many years, 00:05:05.27\00:05:08.10 but it also drew her to Christ. 00:05:08.14\00:05:10.51 She began to realize... 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.27 I mean, she was already a Christian, 00:05:12.31\00:05:13.64 she was a Methodist and her family were Methodists. 00:05:13.68\00:05:16.34 But she began to realize also 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.15 what it was to have a disfigurement 00:05:18.18\00:05:19.78 'cause she was hit in the face, and so she had an empathy 00:05:19.81\00:05:23.25 that grew for those that are marginalized 00:05:23.28\00:05:26.05 or that are on this, 00:05:26.09\00:05:27.42 you know, the margins of society, 00:05:27.46\00:05:28.79 or maybe have some kind of a physical deformity 00:05:28.82\00:05:31.56 or something. 00:05:31.59\00:05:32.93 And so she always had that empathy 00:05:32.96\00:05:34.93 for what we might... 00:05:34.96\00:05:36.63 When I was growing up, 00:05:36.67\00:05:38.00 we had to call the down and outers, 00:05:38.03\00:05:39.37 I don't think that's correct now, 00:05:39.40\00:05:40.74 but those people that need a little extra. 00:05:40.77\00:05:42.67 So she was always helping people 00:05:42.70\00:05:44.41 throughout her life. 00:05:44.44\00:05:45.77 She also at the age of 17 or just before she was 17, 00:05:45.81\00:05:49.41 her family became 00:05:49.44\00:05:50.78 what were known as Millerite Adventists. 00:05:50.81\00:05:52.58 They were expecting the Lord to return 00:05:52.61\00:05:54.22 through a misunderstanding of biblical prophecy. 00:05:54.25\00:05:56.48 They expected the Lord's return in 1844. 00:05:56.52\00:05:59.05 And so she was disappointed when He didn't come, 00:05:59.09\00:06:01.66 but shortly after that she was given 00:06:01.69\00:06:04.09 what we believe was the first of many visions 00:06:04.13\00:06:06.86 and prophetic dreams of the night 00:06:06.90\00:06:08.23 that she would have during the rest of her life, 00:06:08.26\00:06:09.73 the next 70 years. 00:06:09.76\00:06:11.17 And from those prophetic dreams and visions that she received, 00:06:11.20\00:06:16.27 she spoke, she wrote great amount of information 00:06:16.30\00:06:21.28 on everything 00:06:21.31\00:06:22.64 from education to health, 00:06:22.68\00:06:27.52 I mean, you name it, public relations, 00:06:27.55\00:06:29.62 even how you should interact 00:06:29.65\00:06:30.99 with other people, other face, religious liberty. 00:06:31.02\00:06:34.36 I mean, you just go on and on and on, 00:06:34.39\00:06:35.72 if you look at the scope of her writings, 00:06:35.76\00:06:37.26 much of it about Christ. 00:06:37.29\00:06:38.63 One of the things 00:06:38.66\00:06:40.00 that we feature in our visitor center 00:06:40.03\00:06:41.36 that we'll be discussing later in the program is the fact 00:06:41.40\00:06:44.10 that she used more than 800 different names 00:06:44.13\00:06:48.34 or terms to refer to Christ in her writings. 00:06:48.37\00:06:50.91 I mean, this lady was Christ centered 00:06:50.94\00:06:52.51 through and through biblically based, 00:06:52.54\00:06:53.94 you can hardly open a page of her writings 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.91 without finding either Christ, or a Bible, in a Bible passage. 00:06:55.94\00:07:00.35 And she was an extremely prolific writer. 00:07:00.38\00:07:02.68 How many books did she write? 00:07:02.72\00:07:04.69 Well, at the time of her death it was over 25, 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.92 but she left thousands of pages of manuscripts 00:07:06.96\00:07:10.23 and those have been put into compilations. 00:07:10.26\00:07:11.79 I don't even know how many there are now. 00:07:11.83\00:07:13.16 There's over 120 00:07:13.19\00:07:14.60 or so of different compilations from her writings 00:07:14.63\00:07:17.47 on all these different topics that we've been talking about 00:07:17.50\00:07:19.90 and many, many more that I haven't mentioned. 00:07:19.93\00:07:22.50 So her writings, by the way, are all available, 00:07:22.54\00:07:25.27 you'll hear later about that. 00:07:25.31\00:07:26.94 They're all available for free downloading 00:07:26.98\00:07:29.14 from the Ellen G. White Estates. 00:07:29.18\00:07:30.58 So if you're just sitting at home 00:07:30.61\00:07:32.98 with your and have access to the internet, 00:07:33.01\00:07:35.35 you can get them for free, 00:07:35.38\00:07:36.72 you don't have to even go somewhere 00:07:36.75\00:07:38.09 to see all this. 00:07:38.12\00:07:39.45 And, you know, if I were to say to our viewers 00:07:39.49\00:07:43.46 if you're not familiar with Ellen White, 00:07:43.49\00:07:44.83 the first three books that I would recommend would be 00:07:44.86\00:07:47.80 "The Desire of Ages" on the life of Christ, 00:07:47.83\00:07:50.40 "The Great Controversy" 00:07:50.43\00:07:51.90 which is talking about 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.04 what's going on in our world through, 00:07:54.07\00:07:56.91 not only the historical perspective 00:07:56.94\00:07:59.07 but seeing how this great controversy 00:07:59.11\00:08:01.48 between good and evil. 00:08:01.51\00:08:03.18 "Christ Object Lessons" is another great one. 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.45 There's so many wonderful... 00:08:05.48\00:08:06.82 Yeah, but don't forget "Steps to Christ." 00:08:06.85\00:08:08.18 And, oh, "Steps to Christ," excuse me. 00:08:08.22\00:08:09.98 Absolutely. 00:08:10.02\00:08:11.35 It's very small, but, man, it is really life changing. 00:08:11.39\00:08:13.39 That's true. Amen. 00:08:13.42\00:08:15.52 In fact, this year 00:08:15.56\00:08:16.89 is the 125th anniversary of the publishing of that book. 00:08:16.93\00:08:19.23 And the White Estate has... Steps to Christ? 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.60 Yes. 00:08:20.63\00:08:21.96 So I mean we're almost through the year, 00:08:22.00\00:08:23.33 I realized 00:08:23.37\00:08:24.70 but it was published first in 1892. 00:08:24.73\00:08:26.47 And the White Estate has been encouraging people 00:08:26.50\00:08:28.24 to read that book 00:08:28.27\00:08:29.60 or either for the first time or read it again, 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.64 as though it were for the first time 00:08:31.67\00:08:33.41 and let it touch their lives again. 00:08:33.44\00:08:35.78 But just, let me just add one other thing. 00:08:35.81\00:08:38.51 Her, especially her writings on health 00:08:38.55\00:08:42.15 have impacted Seventh-day Adventists, 00:08:42.18\00:08:43.79 those that follow her counsels. 00:08:43.82\00:08:45.69 We, on average, live 8 to 10 years longer 00:08:45.72\00:08:48.79 than the general population of whatever country. 00:08:48.82\00:08:50.39 And these surveys have been done, 00:08:50.43\00:08:51.76 studies have been done over and over. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.50 She's been recognized 00:08:53.53\00:08:55.36 by Smithsonian Institute in their magazine 00:08:55.40\00:08:57.60 as one of the outstanding Americans, 00:08:57.63\00:08:59.20 100 top of outstanding Americans 00:08:59.23\00:09:01.04 in the history the country. 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.40 National Geographic 00:09:02.44\00:09:03.77 has talked about her impact on health, 00:09:03.81\00:09:06.44 so just in that one area, 00:09:06.47\00:09:08.48 not to say anything about education 00:09:08.51\00:09:09.84 and other as well. 00:09:09.88\00:09:11.21 So she is recognized 00:09:11.25\00:09:13.48 as a prolific religious writer as you said 00:09:13.52\00:09:17.59 and one that changes lives and points people to Jesus 00:09:17.62\00:09:20.02 that was what she was all about was pointing people to Jesus. 00:09:20.06\00:09:22.86 Get them to study their Bibles and to point them to Jesus. 00:09:22.89\00:09:27.06 When I first visited the Ellen White Estate 00:09:27.10\00:09:29.50 I was told only approximately 3% of her writings was, 00:09:29.53\00:09:33.90 like foretelling the future. 00:09:33.94\00:09:35.57 Mostly what she was doing was an inspired 00:09:35.60\00:09:38.84 by old writer on the scriptures. 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.88 And she was always, always, I've got pages where she says, 00:09:40.91\00:09:46.41 my writings are not to replace the Bible, 00:09:46.45\00:09:49.22 I'm the lesser light pointing to the greater light. 00:09:49.25\00:09:52.49 So we as Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:09:52.52\00:09:56.22 base all of our beliefs on the Bible. 00:09:56.26\00:09:58.93 And she says, go to the Bible first, 00:09:58.96\00:10:01.36 and then it's just reading... 00:10:01.40\00:10:04.03 If you then read her writings, 00:10:04.07\00:10:05.97 it gives you even greater understanding 00:10:06.00\00:10:08.17 just because she's spent so much time on Word. 00:10:08.20\00:10:09.67 That's interesting. 00:10:09.70\00:10:11.04 You'll never find her saying 00:10:11.07\00:10:12.47 that the Bible should be tested by my writings. 00:10:12.51\00:10:14.94 She always says my writings should be tested by the Bible. 00:10:14.98\00:10:17.41 She's always 00:10:17.45\00:10:18.78 from the very first book that she put out, 00:10:18.81\00:10:20.28 right through the rest of her life 00:10:20.32\00:10:21.65 as you just said, 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.02 she's always pointing people, she always uplifting Christ, 00:10:23.05\00:10:25.75 excuse me, the scriptures and Christ, 00:10:25.79\00:10:27.12 but scriptures always pointing people to the Bible. 00:10:27.16\00:10:31.09 And so to the extent 00:10:31.13\00:10:32.66 that her writings help us to do that, 00:10:32.69\00:10:35.93 that she's being effective. 00:10:35.96\00:10:37.63 If we make her the center, 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.04 she would be upset if she were still alive today. 00:10:40.07\00:10:41.87 Absolutely, absolutely. 00:10:41.90\00:10:44.37 Now, let me ask you this question. 00:10:44.41\00:10:46.88 "How did you meet these two gentlemen? 00:10:46.91\00:10:48.74 How did you all come together? 00:10:48.78\00:10:50.98 And tell us about your dream that is now being fulfilled 00:10:51.01\00:10:55.05 for the Ellen White Visitor Center. 00:10:55.08\00:10:56.89 Well, I don't know how many years ago, 00:10:56.92\00:10:58.29 probably, at least 8 or 10 years ago, 00:10:58.32\00:11:01.26 I got a dream. 00:11:01.29\00:11:03.26 I mean, "Not a dream, dream," 00:11:03.29\00:11:05.86 but, you know, I had this idea that many Adventists 00:11:05.89\00:11:08.96 or people who come to the General Conference 00:11:09.00\00:11:10.97 or Seventh-day Adventist 00:11:11.00\00:11:12.33 where the White Estate's headquarters is 00:11:12.37\00:11:14.04 in Silver Spring, Maryland, 00:11:14.07\00:11:15.40 that many of them don't know much about Ellen White, 00:11:15.44\00:11:16.84 even church members, 00:11:16.87\00:11:18.21 they don't know a lot about Ellen White. 00:11:18.24\00:11:19.57 So I had this idea, 00:11:19.61\00:11:20.94 this dream that we would have some kind of visitor center, 00:11:20.98\00:11:23.98 that would explain who she was 00:11:24.01\00:11:26.38 and about the main themes of her writings. 00:11:26.41\00:11:29.62 And so, I finally got to the place 00:11:29.65\00:11:32.52 where I've been able 00:11:32.55\00:11:33.89 to salt away a little bit of money 00:11:33.92\00:11:35.62 and we hired a company, 00:11:35.66\00:11:37.63 but they didn't know anything about Ellen White. 00:11:37.66\00:11:41.36 And most of our meetings, I was spending explaining 00:11:41.40\00:11:43.93 "Well, now we want to talk about this. 00:11:43.97\00:11:45.53 Well, what is that all about?" 00:11:45.57\00:11:46.90 So then I would have to tell them all about that. 00:11:46.94\00:11:48.27 Well, why is that important and then tell about that. 00:11:48.30\00:11:50.21 So I realized we were eating up all of our money explaining 00:11:50.24\00:11:53.27 why we needed to include this in the visitor center, 00:11:53.31\00:11:56.21 but not, how are we gonna, 00:11:56.24\00:11:57.71 you know, how we're gonna featured 00:11:57.75\00:11:59.08 in the visitor center. 00:11:59.11\00:12:00.45 So my staff knew that I was frustrated. 00:12:00.48\00:12:03.59 One of my colleagues happened to be doing a shoot with... 00:12:03.62\00:12:08.32 Marcello? 00:12:08.36\00:12:09.69 I don't know, Marcello and who else, 00:12:09.72\00:12:11.06 I don't know who all was there. 00:12:11.09\00:12:12.43 But anyway, with Marcello and others, 00:12:12.46\00:12:13.80 they were doing a shoot, 00:12:13.83\00:12:15.16 I think for the Brazilian publishing house? 00:12:15.20\00:12:16.53 Okay, so for our publishing house 00:12:16.56\00:12:18.20 and our church's publishing house in Brazil. 00:12:18.23\00:12:20.60 And Marcello, as I was told later, 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.60 said something to Alberto Tim, is my colleague's name, 00:12:22.64\00:12:25.81 to Alberto, we're looking for something 00:12:25.84\00:12:27.38 we could do for the church. 00:12:27.41\00:12:28.98 Well, they're in television production 00:12:29.01\00:12:30.58 and that kind of thing and so my colleague knew 00:12:30.61\00:12:33.72 that I was very frustrated 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.18 'cause I wasn't making any progress 00:12:35.22\00:12:37.02 on this visitor center concept. 00:12:37.05\00:12:38.99 So he said, "You need to go talk to Jim. 00:12:39.02\00:12:42.09 When you get back to..." 00:12:42.12\00:12:43.46 'cause their office was not very far 00:12:43.49\00:12:44.83 from the General Conference actually at that time, 00:12:44.86\00:12:46.19 they moved a little bit farther away 00:12:46.23\00:12:47.56 but they're still in the vicinity. 00:12:47.60\00:12:48.93 And so he made an appointment and came in. 00:12:48.96\00:12:51.50 I didn't know him at all. 00:12:51.53\00:12:52.87 I mean, I never met the guy except 00:12:52.90\00:12:54.37 that my colleague had said 00:12:54.40\00:12:55.74 there will be somebody contacting you. 00:12:55.77\00:12:58.01 I clicked with Marcello immediately, 00:12:58.04\00:13:00.38 being a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:13:00.41\00:13:01.74 I didn't have to explain why this was important 00:13:01.78\00:13:04.15 or that was important, etcetera. 00:13:04.18\00:13:06.08 Hence, so I said, 00:13:06.11\00:13:07.72 "You know, can you work on us for a visitor center? 00:13:07.75\00:13:10.89 We're gonna develop a visitor center." 00:13:10.92\00:13:12.52 Now he did not tell me at that time 00:13:12.55\00:13:14.99 they were in television. 00:13:15.02\00:13:16.36 They had never created a visitor center. 00:13:16.39\00:13:18.86 If he had told me that, 00:13:18.89\00:13:20.50 I probably would have had wet feet. 00:13:20.53\00:13:21.93 You know, I'd probably said, 00:13:21.96\00:13:23.30 "No, wait a minute, I'm not sure about this." 00:13:23.33\00:13:25.03 But they've got this gung-ho, you know, we can do this thing, 00:13:25.07\00:13:27.84 I had attitude 00:13:27.87\00:13:29.20 and you pray your way through it, 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.37 and many people had told us 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.58 this Smithsonian quality what they produced. 00:13:33.61\00:13:36.11 So I think that between meeting him, 00:13:36.14\00:13:39.21 I mean, Alberto meeting him initially 00:13:39.25\00:13:41.28 and then our clicking and talking, 00:13:41.32\00:13:43.08 it was a long time after that before 00:13:43.12\00:13:44.45 I actually met this man because he was over doing 00:13:44.49\00:13:47.72 the graphic designs back in their office. 00:13:47.76\00:13:50.23 And there was another person 00:13:50.26\00:13:51.59 that doesn't work for the company anymore, 00:13:51.63\00:13:53.06 and he's moved on 00:13:53.09\00:13:54.43 to another Adventist institution, 00:13:54.46\00:13:55.86 but he's the one I was interacting with. 00:13:55.90\00:13:58.67 So I would hear about what he was doing, 00:13:58.70\00:14:00.24 but I hadn't actually met Siloe. 00:14:00.27\00:14:02.37 And when I did, I clicked with him too. 00:14:02.40\00:14:04.31 So now they're almost like sons, 00:14:04.34\00:14:06.44 but I don't know if they would mind me saying 00:14:06.47\00:14:08.38 that on your program, but I look at him like sons. 00:14:08.41\00:14:12.18 Amen. Amen. 00:14:12.21\00:14:13.55 So, Marcello, you know, it occurs to me 00:14:13.58\00:14:16.28 because I have seen 00:14:16.32\00:14:17.95 what you're going to show in just a moments, 00:14:17.99\00:14:20.76 the roll that you brought of the news center. 00:14:20.79\00:14:24.39 It occurs to me that maybe it was a good thing 00:14:24.43\00:14:28.23 that you'd never done in visitor center before. 00:14:28.26\00:14:30.30 And that wasn't your focus because as a TV producer, 00:14:30.33\00:14:35.00 you are used to telling a story 00:14:35.04\00:14:38.37 to immerse people in the culture. 00:14:38.41\00:14:40.48 Tell us, when you first got this project, 00:14:40.51\00:14:43.88 I guess, you spent a lot of time on your knees? 00:14:43.91\00:14:46.72 I guess, the first challenge was to convince my own team 00:14:46.75\00:14:50.82 that we were going to build a visitor center 00:14:50.85\00:14:54.09 because I remember coming to the project, 00:14:54.12\00:14:56.32 and I didn't go to Siloe, 00:14:56.36\00:14:57.69 I went to another designer on the team and said, 00:14:57.73\00:14:59.43 "I'll just start putting stuff here and there. 00:14:59.46\00:15:01.93 I just want to go to this meeting 00:15:01.96\00:15:03.30 and show something," 00:15:03.33\00:15:04.67 and everybody was saying, 00:15:04.70\00:15:06.03 "This is not going to work. 00:15:06.07\00:15:07.40 And we don't do this, we do television." 00:15:07.44\00:15:10.81 And so first step was to convince the team 00:15:10.84\00:15:13.68 and then the next step would be to convince Jim. 00:15:13.71\00:15:16.78 Now, of course, we didn't know exactly 00:15:16.81\00:15:20.95 what he had in his mind for a visitor center. 00:15:20.98\00:15:25.35 And so it was a challenge in the beginning. 00:15:25.39\00:15:29.56 But... 00:15:29.59\00:15:30.93 And I remember that he mentioned, 00:15:30.96\00:15:34.13 "We want to do something here 00:15:34.16\00:15:35.50 but we don't want to do a lot of construction." 00:15:35.53\00:15:37.87 So we want to use this space as it is. 00:15:37.90\00:15:39.80 That's because I didn't have much money. 00:15:39.83\00:15:41.37 Yes, I understand. 00:15:41.40\00:15:42.74 I think construction is expensive. 00:15:42.77\00:15:44.11 We understand that. 00:15:44.14\00:15:45.47 And so it was funny because I said, 00:15:45.51\00:15:47.18 "Oh, yes, we won't do, 00:15:47.21\00:15:49.04 we will try to use the space as it is." 00:15:49.08\00:15:52.18 But I didn't want them to see when we came in with the team 00:15:52.21\00:15:56.28 because first they probably would notice 00:15:56.32\00:15:58.42 that we didn't know what we were doing, 00:15:58.45\00:16:00.36 and also in my mind, 00:16:00.39\00:16:02.82 we needed to redo the whole thing. 00:16:02.86\00:16:06.16 So we went on a Friday afternoon 00:16:06.19\00:16:07.76 when the building was closed and I told my guys, 00:16:07.80\00:16:11.33 we can't take down anything that's needed, any walls, 00:16:11.37\00:16:14.94 all we will keep is the columns. 00:16:14.97\00:16:17.11 So we had... 00:16:17.14\00:16:18.47 And the walls. And the walls, yes. 00:16:18.51\00:16:21.58 So we had some goals. 00:16:21.61\00:16:25.05 One would be to really separate 00:16:25.08\00:16:26.51 the office area from the visitor area. 00:16:26.55\00:16:28.98 And then you spread the space in a way 00:16:29.02\00:16:32.59 that it would start 00:16:32.62\00:16:33.96 and end at the same place, natural light, 00:16:33.99\00:16:37.26 and changing so many things 00:16:37.29\00:16:39.09 that it would look great on paper, 00:16:39.13\00:16:40.66 but we were not sure 00:16:40.70\00:16:42.03 if it would ever actually become reality. 00:16:42.06\00:16:45.13 But it ended up working very well, I guess. 00:16:45.17\00:16:50.04 And so when did Siloe look at you? 00:16:50.07\00:16:51.41 But that's another miracle. What? 00:16:51.44\00:16:53.78 When they brought the plan to us, 00:16:53.81\00:16:55.48 because I mean, as I said a minute ago, 00:16:55.51\00:16:57.78 we didn't have money, I wasn't against moving walls, 00:16:57.81\00:16:59.65 we just didn't have the money to move the walls. 00:16:59.68\00:17:01.85 So when I saw the concept that they came up with, I said, 00:17:01.88\00:17:05.32 "Well, this is what we need to do 00:17:05.35\00:17:06.69 but I still don't have any money." 00:17:06.72\00:17:08.22 But we're in the World Headquarters of the Church, 00:17:08.26\00:17:11.16 we don't own the building, obviously, 00:17:11.19\00:17:12.79 the General Conference owns their building. 00:17:12.83\00:17:14.96 So we made an appointment 00:17:15.00\00:17:16.33 with the officers of the church, 00:17:16.36\00:17:17.70 the top three officers and a few others were there, 00:17:17.73\00:17:19.23 also including one of your speakers 00:17:19.27\00:17:20.60 that you have often Mark Finley 00:17:20.64\00:17:22.10 who happened to be at the meeting. 00:17:22.14\00:17:23.54 And they made a presentation. 00:17:23.57\00:17:27.71 And now what we had prayed about before we went in was, 00:17:27.74\00:17:30.68 that the GC, 00:17:30.71\00:17:32.05 the General Conference would say, 00:17:32.08\00:17:33.55 "We'll do the remodeling, 00:17:33.58\00:17:34.98 you save your money for the exhibits." 00:17:35.02\00:17:36.99 And I had no idea this was going to happen. 00:17:37.02\00:17:39.45 Now if you know anything about treasures, 00:17:39.49\00:17:40.89 what happened was nothing short of a miracle. 00:17:40.92\00:17:43.63 The treasure... 00:17:43.66\00:17:44.99 Well, Mark was one of the first to speak and Elder Finley, 00:17:45.03\00:17:47.30 and Pastor Finley and he said, 00:17:47.33\00:17:49.36 "You know, we should have done this years ago." 00:17:49.40\00:17:51.37 But one of the treasurer said, 00:17:51.40\00:17:53.77 "You know, we're remodeling the building 00:17:53.80\00:17:55.50 'cause it's been..." 00:17:55.54\00:17:56.87 I think, in 1989 or something they moved into it. 00:17:56.91\00:17:59.71 So they were moving different floors 00:17:59.74\00:18:01.11 and remodeling things, you know. 00:18:01.14\00:18:02.48 And they said, 00:18:02.51\00:18:03.85 "Why don't we move the White Estate up on the list 00:18:03.88\00:18:05.58 and we'll take care 00:18:05.61\00:18:06.95 of all of the remodeling of the walls, 00:18:06.98\00:18:09.58 and they can save their money 00:18:09.62\00:18:10.95 that they've saved for the visitor center. 00:18:10.99\00:18:13.46 And I walked out of there, said, 00:18:13.49\00:18:14.82 "Lord, You're in this project" 00:18:14.86\00:18:16.19 because there's no way 00:18:16.22\00:18:17.56 that we could have done much of a visitor center 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.06 with the funds we had and had to do 00:18:20.10\00:18:21.90 all the cost of remodeling 00:18:21.93\00:18:23.93 everything that they were suggesting. 00:18:23.97\00:18:25.73 Amen. 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.10 Siloe, how at what point did you become involved 00:18:27.14\00:18:29.44 because I understand 00:18:29.47\00:18:30.81 that your graphic designing has added a lot. 00:18:30.84\00:18:33.34 Right from the beginning, 00:18:33.38\00:18:35.34 ever since Marcello brought in the concept 00:18:35.38\00:18:38.21 of what we could do with the space, 00:18:38.25\00:18:40.85 I was working 00:18:40.88\00:18:42.22 the different iterations of designs 00:18:42.25\00:18:44.05 so that we could finally get to Jim's, 00:18:44.09\00:18:46.96 or close to Jim's dream because he had this in mind, 00:18:46.99\00:18:50.99 and he lives and breathes history. 00:18:51.03\00:18:53.53 Yes, he does. 00:18:53.56\00:18:54.90 He loves the history of Ellen White 00:18:54.93\00:18:56.56 and the church. 00:18:56.60\00:18:57.93 So to be able to translate that into something tangible, 00:18:57.97\00:19:02.77 it becomes a challenge, 00:19:02.80\00:19:04.14 especially trying to understand it from him 00:19:04.17\00:19:07.14 who has that historian mindset to try to change it 00:19:07.18\00:19:11.65 and build it into 3D space and put color, and put type, 00:19:11.68\00:19:17.95 and make it into environment that actually tells that story, 00:19:17.99\00:19:21.72 but perhaps that he didn't even know exactly 00:19:21.76\00:19:24.56 how it would be. 00:19:24.59\00:19:25.93 So getting to that point, 00:19:25.96\00:19:28.50 there were obviously challenges. 00:19:28.53\00:19:30.07 But I think we were able to find 00:19:30.10\00:19:31.90 a good solution at the end. 00:19:31.93\00:19:34.30 Why don't we roll, 00:19:34.34\00:19:35.90 they brought a six minute roll with them 00:19:35.94\00:19:37.74 and we'd like to see that now and you all can just... 00:19:37.77\00:19:41.28 As you watch this, we'll allow them to explain 00:19:41.31\00:19:44.81 and you'll get to just see a little taste 00:19:44.85\00:19:47.88 of the new Ellen G. White Visitor Center. 00:19:47.92\00:19:51.55 This is the entrance to the visitor center. 00:19:51.59\00:19:53.29 So here's where you begin. 00:19:53.32\00:19:54.66 That, visitor center 00:19:54.69\00:19:56.02 is actually divided into two sections. 00:19:56.06\00:19:57.99 The first section deals with Ellen White as a person. 00:19:58.03\00:20:00.20 She began her ministries in a barn, 00:20:00.23\00:20:03.00 or small homes, or churches, etcetera. 00:20:03.03\00:20:05.33 That was a very simple ministry when she was a young girl, 00:20:05.37\00:20:08.14 and God first called her and so we start with the barn. 00:20:08.17\00:20:10.94 And then some of the people that were involved, 00:20:10.97\00:20:13.01 her husband and others, 00:20:13.04\00:20:14.38 that were supporters of her at the very beginning. 00:20:14.41\00:20:16.61 Her childhood, we talk about her childhood in Portland 00:20:16.64\00:20:19.01 and have examples of that. 00:20:19.05\00:20:20.92 And growing up as a Millerite Adventist, 00:20:20.95\00:20:23.49 so we have a display on Millerites. 00:20:23.52\00:20:25.85 And here you can see, when the years 00:20:25.89\00:20:27.99 that she was a Millerite Adventist 00:20:28.02\00:20:29.62 that I mentioned earlier. 00:20:29.66\00:20:30.99 So the first part 00:20:31.03\00:20:32.36 of the whole visitor center deals 00:20:32.39\00:20:33.73 with her as a person. 00:20:33.76\00:20:35.76 Yes. 00:20:35.80\00:20:37.13 Hoping people, helping people 00:20:37.17\00:20:38.50 to understand a little bit more about her, 00:20:38.53\00:20:41.07 some of the original artifacts 00:20:41.10\00:20:42.44 that we have put on display in the visitor center. 00:20:42.47\00:20:44.74 There's a section here on her support of her son, 00:20:44.77\00:20:48.31 Edson White 00:20:48.34\00:20:49.68 and his work among blacks in the south, 00:20:49.71\00:20:51.45 as well as her international travels. 00:20:51.48\00:20:53.82 So section about her years 00:20:53.85\00:20:55.65 that she was in Europe, the 1880s, 00:20:55.68\00:20:57.95 and then her years in Australia in the 1890s to show 00:20:57.99\00:21:01.62 that she didn't just talk the talk, 00:21:01.66\00:21:03.26 she walked the walk, 00:21:03.29\00:21:04.63 she went as a missionary herself overseas. 00:21:04.66\00:21:07.06 And there's some interactive displays 00:21:07.10\00:21:09.33 in here also, 00:21:09.36\00:21:10.70 you can't see them from the pictures 00:21:10.73\00:21:12.07 but there's some interactive things 00:21:12.10\00:21:13.67 that visitors get to see. 00:21:13.70\00:21:15.14 There's a model in the middle of the room there, 00:21:15.17\00:21:16.87 of her home and Battle Creek, Michigan, 00:21:16.91\00:21:19.74 which is owned by the church, this house. 00:21:19.77\00:21:22.28 But this is a little model again 00:21:22.31\00:21:23.65 to help people realize 00:21:23.68\00:21:25.01 what, you know, how she lived what she did, 00:21:25.05\00:21:29.48 section about home. 00:21:29.52\00:21:30.99 And well, here's the house again, 00:21:31.02\00:21:33.52 that someone very kindly donated 00:21:33.56\00:21:35.69 this model that they made. 00:21:35.72\00:21:37.06 It's very, very accurate. 00:21:37.09\00:21:38.43 We find people standing around and looking in there. 00:21:38.46\00:21:41.20 It's lovely. Absolutely. 00:28:16.83\00:28:18.43 And we like stories. 00:28:18.46\00:28:19.96 So if we can tell stories and do something 00:28:20.00\00:28:22.43 so they can relate, I mean, I'm ahead of the program 00:28:22.46\00:28:25.20 but we have people coming. 00:28:25.23\00:28:26.57 There are young people coming 00:28:26.60\00:28:27.94 through the Historic Adventist Village 00:28:27.97\00:28:29.30 in Battle Creek for instance. 00:28:29.34\00:28:30.67 And they will say, now we can relate, 00:28:30.71\00:28:32.04 we walked in the streets where the pioneers, 00:28:32.07\00:28:34.21 we have been in the bedrooms 00:28:34.24\00:28:35.58 and the living rooms of the homes of the pioneers. 00:28:35.61\00:28:38.58 And that's what it all came from. 00:28:38.61\00:28:39.95 It's just how do we pass 00:28:39.98\00:28:42.15 on this fantastic story of God's 00:28:42.18\00:28:45.59 leading in the history of this church, to then, 00:28:45.62\00:28:48.39 how de we pass it on to the next generation? 00:28:48.42\00:28:50.03 Amen and amen. That's one of my many passions. 00:28:50.06\00:28:52.53 Well, you know, it was so funny 00:28:52.56\00:28:54.30 because I have to tell the audience this that, 00:28:54.33\00:28:57.47 when we first were meeting this morning 00:28:57.50\00:29:00.34 and when we were in the green room 00:29:00.37\00:29:01.70 and I said, 00:29:01.74\00:29:03.07 "Oh, well, I have been to Ellen G. White Estate." 00:29:03.10\00:29:04.47 And they said, "How long ago?" 00:29:04.51\00:29:05.84 Well, it's been about eight years. 00:29:05.87\00:29:07.21 They said, 00:29:07.24\00:29:08.58 "You have not been seen the Ellen G. White Estate." 00:29:08.61\00:29:11.05 So this is a beautiful museum. 00:29:11.08\00:29:12.88 Thank you all so much for your dedication. 00:29:12.91\00:29:15.58 I know the Lord led you 00:29:15.62\00:29:17.55 and this is something that I believe every person... 00:29:17.59\00:29:22.32 I think I know, 00:29:22.36\00:29:23.69 we'll compare notes in a minute. 00:29:23.73\00:29:25.06 But I think I know where you were 00:29:25.09\00:29:27.06 when you had this vision and it is important. 00:29:27.10\00:29:30.40 God created us in His image. 00:29:30.43\00:29:33.10 He is a relational being. 00:29:33.13\00:29:34.97 And it is important that we can know our history 00:29:35.00\00:29:39.07 and see how God has done such amazing things 00:29:39.11\00:29:44.41 through one simple surrendered soul. 00:29:44.45\00:29:49.18 What we want to do, we still have so much. 00:29:49.22\00:29:52.15 We are going to talk about Adventist Heritage Ministries 00:29:52.19\00:29:55.82 and some exciting applications 00:29:55.86\00:29:59.03 that you can download from the web 00:29:59.06\00:30:01.86 and the new web design 00:30:01.90\00:30:03.30 for the Ellen G. White Estate in Silver Spring, Maryland, 00:39:33.23\00:39:36.81 has demonstrated how important learning spaces 00:39:36.84\00:39:39.21 can be in the development of young Adventists. 00:39:39.24\00:39:42.28 Ellen White's Christ centered story of resilience 00:39:42.31\00:39:45.28 has portrayed through vivid exhibits 00:39:45.31\00:39:47.48 that leave a mark on whoever visits, 00:39:47.52\00:39:49.78 strengthening her legacy. 00:39:49.82\00:39:52.45 Likewise, visitors 00:39:52.49\00:39:53.92 to the Joseph Bates Boyhood Home 00:39:53.96\00:39:56.06 will be able to more fully 00:39:56.09\00:39:57.53 understand Joseph Bates experience, 00:39:57.56\00:39:59.79 his struggles and victories. 00:39:59.83\00:40:02.33 The tour of the home will start 00:40:02.36\00:40:03.70 in the belly of a 19th century ship, 00:40:03.73\00:40:06.17 as the visitor is introduced to Joseph Bates, 00:40:06.20\00:40:08.90 a cabin boy turned captain, 00:40:08.94\00:40:10.87 through the use of video monitors, 00:40:10.91\00:40:12.91 and surround sound design, 00:40:12.94\00:40:14.48 his adventures are brought to life, 00:40:14.51\00:40:16.51 as the visitor is immersed in the narrative. 00:40:16.54\00:40:19.81 More can then be learned about his international voyages 00:40:19.85\00:40:23.49 to an interactive touch-screen display 00:40:23.52\00:40:25.95 that connects Joseph Bates to the wider world. 00:40:25.99\00:40:28.92 The visitor will then explore his formative years 00:40:28.96\00:40:31.79 as they tour the original rooms 00:40:31.83\00:40:33.46 of the home that molded the man. 00:40:33.50\00:40:35.50 Daily life in the 19th century is revealed, 00:40:35.53\00:40:38.20 as well as Joseph Bates love for the sea 00:40:38.23\00:40:40.77 and later conversion to Christianity. 00:40:40.80\00:40:43.44 His passion for the message of Christ imminent return 00:40:43.47\00:40:46.34 has proclaimed in the Millerite movement 00:40:46.37\00:40:48.48 will be explored in the next room. 00:40:48.51\00:40:50.71 The visitor will understand 00:40:50.75\00:40:52.55 how the central belief became pivotal in his life 00:40:52.58\00:40:55.65 even when struggling to make sense 00:40:55.68\00:40:57.39 of the great disappointment of 1844 00:40:57.42\00:41:01.02 Original artifacts will color the experience 00:41:01.06\00:41:03.16 and Interactive Digital Displays 00:41:03.19\00:41:05.23 will engage those who want to know more. 00:41:05.26\00:41:07.80 The following room, the guests will explore 00:41:07.83\00:41:10.40 Joseph Bates anti-slavery views, 00:41:10.43\00:41:12.73 a device of stands at that time. 00:41:12.77\00:41:15.37 Bates interest in leading a healthy life 00:41:15.40\00:41:17.77 will also be featured 00:41:17.81\00:41:19.17 as his pioneering work on temperance 00:41:19.21\00:41:21.61 and health reform are discussed. 00:41:21.64\00:41:23.98 The visit will commentate 00:41:24.01\00:41:25.35 with an audio visual presentation 00:41:25.38\00:41:27.18 that reveals Bates discovery 00:41:27.22\00:41:28.95 and conviction that the Seventh-day Sabbath 00:41:28.98\00:41:31.39 should be observed 00:41:31.42\00:41:32.92 and how this doctrine influenced 00:41:32.95\00:41:34.56 the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:41:34.59\00:41:36.76 This last room becomes 00:41:36.79\00:41:38.13 the light house for the Sabbath, 00:41:38.16\00:41:39.86 as this central theme is explored 00:41:39.89\00:41:42.06 through the historic lens of Bates own experience. 00:41:42.10\00:41:45.00 The Joseph Bates Boyhood Home becomes a unique tool 00:41:45.03\00:41:48.47 to share the message of the Sabbath 00:41:48.50\00:41:50.34 with those in the community at large 00:41:50.37\00:41:52.84 that reflects through the life of Joseph Bates, 00:41:52.87\00:41:55.41 the value of following biblical principles 00:41:55.44\00:41:58.41 and leading a Christ centered life. 00:41:58.45\00:42:00.72 By reaching those 00:42:00.75\00:42:02.08 who have not yet heard of Christ saving grace 00:42:02.12\00:42:04.35 and by solidifying the faith of those who have, 00:42:04.39\00:42:07.02 that Joseph Bates home will be bastion of truth. 00:42:07.06\00:42:10.93 I can see where that would not only be good 00:42:15.26\00:42:17.43 for educating church members 00:42:17.47\00:42:20.47 but for an evangelistic outrage. 00:42:20.50\00:42:22.90 Right. Yeah, that's true. 00:42:22.94\00:42:25.47 We are working close together also here 00:42:25.51\00:42:27.08 with the local community. 00:42:27.11\00:42:29.04 And especially this house is the oldest house 00:42:29.08\00:42:32.51 still standing in town 00:42:32.55\00:42:33.98 and then back of the house, we have old stone wall. 00:42:34.02\00:42:36.55 And this stone wall goes back to the Mayflower, 00:42:36.58\00:42:38.82 it's connected with some Mayflower 00:42:38.85\00:42:40.19 since one of the pilgrims name, his name was John Cooke. 00:42:40.22\00:42:43.86 His daughter married a guy, his name was Thomas Taber 00:42:43.89\00:42:47.00 and he builded this house in 1678, around this age. 00:42:47.03\00:42:50.70 Fascinating history. When will this open? 00:42:50.73\00:42:53.34 We open as soon as possible because in 2020 00:42:53.37\00:42:57.04 we have the 400th anniversary 00:42:57.07\00:42:58.71 of the landing of the Mayflower. 00:42:58.74\00:43:00.28 And the town will use the space for tourisms, 00:43:00.31\00:43:03.71 for the tourists to come. 00:43:03.75\00:43:05.18 You know, Joseph Bates we owe a lot to him. 00:43:05.21\00:43:07.45 Well, God would have found somebody 00:43:07.48\00:43:09.45 to reintroduce His truth to the protestant faith 00:43:09.48\00:43:13.09 of the Seventh-day Sabbath, 00:43:13.12\00:43:14.52 but great evangelistic outrage there as well. 00:43:14.56\00:43:19.13 All right, Darryl?
