That's a lot. 00:04:20.02\00:04:21.36 Yeah, so for those who say, you know what, 00:04:21.39\00:04:23.46 there's so much to do here, why are they going over there, 00:04:23.49\00:04:25.89 you can answer that question, and for those that say, 00:04:25.93\00:04:28.13 there's so much going on over there, 00:04:28.16\00:04:29.50 why are we wasting our time here, 00:04:29.53\00:04:30.87 you can answer that question too. 00:04:30.90\00:04:32.23 Absolutely. 00:04:32.27\00:04:33.60 Yeah, oh, and it's a great way to get started. 00:04:33.64\00:04:34.97 It really is. 00:04:35.00\00:04:36.34 There's a lot of people are driving, 00:04:36.37\00:04:37.71 they're taking their V's, 00:04:37.74\00:04:39.07 they're staying with church members' homes, 00:04:39.11\00:04:40.44 whatever it maybe, but it's an option 00:04:40.48\00:04:41.84 where the local host, a church, 00:04:41.88\00:04:44.58 or a school that we're helping build, 00:04:44.61\00:04:45.98 will help cover their expenses while they're there, 00:04:46.01\00:04:47.75 so they just need to get there, 00:04:47.78\00:04:49.15 so it's a really easy way for volunteers to get started. 00:04:49.18\00:04:50.85 Yeah. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord. 00:04:50.89\00:04:52.65 The US projects, we're talking about school, academies, 00:04:52.69\00:04:56.19 churches, those kinds of things. 00:04:56.22\00:04:57.79 Lot of camp renovation. Ah-uh. 00:04:57.83\00:05:00.26 There's academies that are in dire need 00:05:00.30\00:05:03.33 of help with renovating their dormitories, 00:05:03.37\00:05:06.37 landscaping, building cabins, 00:05:06.40\00:05:07.84 whatever it maybe, at these different places, 00:05:07.87\00:05:09.20 we're helping. 00:05:09.24\00:05:10.57 Praise the Lord. That's wonderful. 00:05:10.61\00:05:11.94 Let me ask you this, you were born where? 00:05:11.97\00:05:14.11 I was born in the US, in Washington, 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.51 Walla Walla, Washington, but my dad was born in Panama. 00:05:16.54\00:05:20.32 Oh, yes. Lived in Panama. 00:05:20.35\00:05:23.85 Parents were missionaries, they're sent from Guatemala. 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.32 And my mother was born in the US 00:05:26.35\00:05:28.79 but quickly after travel down to Guatemala 00:05:28.82\00:05:32.13 and where her parents started different academies 00:05:32.16\00:05:35.03 in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize. 00:05:35.06\00:05:36.50 So the missionary bug is kind of in your DNA, David. 00:05:36.53\00:05:39.50 I think so. Yeah. 00:05:39.53\00:05:40.87 I was raised with those mission stories firsthand. 00:05:40.90\00:05:43.54 Absolutely. 00:05:43.57\00:05:44.91 How does one become 00:05:44.94\00:05:46.27 the director of volunteer projects? 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.54 I don't think you, sitting in first grade and say, 00:05:48.58\00:05:50.61 "You know, one day, 00:05:50.65\00:05:51.98 I'm going to be the director of volunteer projects 00:05:52.01\00:05:53.35 for Maranatha. 00:05:53.38\00:05:54.72 Something you stumbled into, 00:05:54.75\00:05:56.08 something you worked your way toward, 00:05:56.12\00:05:57.45 something you wanted to be 00:05:57.49\00:05:58.82 part of was that the missionary aspect 00:05:58.85\00:06:00.19 that kind of threw you. 00:06:00.22\00:06:01.56 How did you find yourself in there? 00:06:01.59\00:06:02.92 Oh, you're absolutely right. 00:06:02.96\00:06:04.29 It wasn't something that I set out in first grade, 00:06:04.33\00:06:05.66 you know, but you get the question all the time, 00:06:05.69\00:06:07.03 what are you going to be when you grow up? 00:06:07.06\00:06:08.40 Right. 00:06:08.43\00:06:09.76 And I thought I had to be a doctor, 00:06:09.80\00:06:11.13 or a pastor to be able to make a difference, 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.70 but you know what, God can use us wherever we are. 00:06:12.73\00:06:14.14 Oh, yes. 00:06:14.17\00:06:15.50 And in high school I think even my motto 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.91 where I wanted to be was just God's hands. 00:06:17.94\00:06:20.44 I had no idea. 00:06:20.48\00:06:21.81 Even in college, I was studying everything, 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.45 I wanted to do everything, I wanted to be... 00:06:23.48\00:06:24.95 I want to be a dentist, 00:06:24.98\00:06:26.31 I wanted to do all these different things, 00:06:26.35\00:06:27.78 and really at age 14, 00:06:27.82\00:06:29.42 on one of my very first Maranatha project to Panama, 00:06:29.45\00:06:32.19 and we were helping build this church 00:06:32.22\00:06:35.12 in the middle of nowhere, 00:06:35.16\00:06:36.49 Charco Azul over in Chiriquí 00:06:36.52\00:06:39.36 and it was just really impactful, 00:06:39.39\00:06:40.73 really life-changing, and it was something 00:06:40.76\00:06:42.10 where I knew I needed to come back, 00:06:42.13\00:06:43.70 and I wanted to continue service and being able to, 00:06:43.73\00:06:47.07 you know, carry on the legacy really. 00:06:47.10\00:06:48.87 And so it was each summer. 00:06:48.90\00:06:50.41 I was helping out in those different ways, 00:06:50.44\00:06:51.77 and I helped translate 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.14 and then I was helping assess the project, 00:06:53.17\00:06:56.01 and so I was helping different ways, 00:06:56.04\00:06:57.38 and in college, I was asked, 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.11 if I take a year out to come help Maranatha 00:06:59.15\00:07:01.22 in the field in Costa Rica. 00:07:01.25\00:07:02.72 And so we built 36, 32 churches and 12 schools 00:07:02.75\00:07:05.99 all around the country of Costa Rica, 00:07:06.02\00:07:07.46 and it was just really, 00:07:07.49\00:07:08.82 I didn't want to go back to school, 00:07:08.86\00:07:10.19 I wanted to work with Maranatha full time. 00:07:10.23\00:07:11.56 My dad was like, no, no you have to go back to school, 00:07:11.59\00:07:13.56 finish off your degrees. 00:07:13.60\00:07:14.93 I did business, and shortly after I was invited 00:07:14.96\00:07:19.27 to come back to Maranatha. 00:07:19.30\00:07:20.67 And so it was a great opportunity, 00:07:20.70\00:07:22.04 and so I worked myself up 00:07:22.07\00:07:23.41 to the director of volunteer projects. 00:07:23.44\00:07:24.81 Oh, praise the Lord. Okay. 00:07:56.34\00:07:57.67 Yeah, missionary parents, Adventist home. 00:07:57.71\00:07:59.44 Oh, a lifer. 00:07:59.47\00:08:02.31 Give me some sense, and then I'll go to our music, 00:08:02.34\00:08:04.25 I want to come back, and sort of mine this a little bit. 00:08:04.28\00:08:06.21 And I start with you Mary, 00:08:06.25\00:08:07.58 some sense of your walk with the Lord, 00:08:07.62\00:08:09.78 prior to doing any mission service. 00:08:09.82\00:08:13.32 Give me some flavor as to, 00:08:13.36\00:08:15.32 you know, your relation with the Lord, 00:08:15.36\00:08:16.69 your work in the church, that kind of thing, 00:08:16.73\00:08:18.06 where you were as an Adventist? 00:08:18.09\00:08:20.63 Before I had gone overseas to do missions, 00:08:20.66\00:08:23.67 I didn't have a global perspective 00:08:23.70\00:08:27.50 of Adventism, 00:08:27.54\00:08:29.70 and I didn't have as much of a vision of the needs 00:08:29.74\00:08:34.41 around the world. 00:08:34.44\00:08:35.78 And then after going, 00:08:35.81\00:08:37.15 and doing mission service with Maranatha, 00:08:37.18\00:08:38.61 you just feel such a global Adventist family 00:08:38.65\00:08:41.45 like we're everywhere. 00:08:41.48\00:08:42.88 And we'd go to help out 00:08:42.92\00:08:44.62 our Adventist brothers, and sisters 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.05 in all parts of the world. 00:08:46.09\00:08:48.02 And so it's definitely helped me feel more connected to us 00:08:48.06\00:08:51.19 as a world church. 00:08:51.23\00:08:53.03 Would you say in looking at your life pre-mission trips 00:08:53.06\00:08:56.87 that you were kind of an on fire Adventist, 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.03 kind of the laissez faire Adventist, 00:08:59.07\00:09:00.67 kind of the struggling Adventist, 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.04 where would you put yourself on that continuum? 00:09:02.07\00:09:04.17 I think I was kind of in the middle. 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.64 I definitely wasn't as grateful 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.31 for what God has done for me as I am now. 00:09:10.35\00:09:14.12 I definitely wasn't as, you know, 00:09:14.15\00:09:17.85 adept to look for the need in others, 00:09:17.89\00:09:20.06 and try to help people out 00:09:20.09\00:09:22.16 whereas now that I have been on 00:09:22.19\00:09:24.09 so many mission trips in daily life, 00:09:24.13\00:09:26.36 you know, I like to pass out glow tracks, 00:09:26.39\00:09:28.00 give Bible studies, 00:09:28.03\00:09:29.40 things to keep that mission spirit going, 00:09:29.43\00:09:32.63 whereas before, you know, 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.20 we would go to the Junior-Senior Bible Camp, 00:09:34.24\00:09:37.21 Pathfinder Camporees, 00:09:37.24\00:09:38.57 we'd have these mountaintop experiences. 00:09:38.61\00:09:39.94 Yes. 00:09:39.97\00:09:41.31 And then, especially as a teenager, 00:09:41.34\00:09:42.94 I would just tend to leave them there 00:09:42.98\00:09:45.15 whereas after going on a mission trip 00:09:45.18\00:09:46.82 for a longer time 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.28 and then wanting more 00:09:48.32\00:09:50.22 and it's like I want to keep that momentum going, 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.75 keep that mountaintop experience, 00:09:52.79\00:09:54.12 bring it back into daily-life, into the valleys of life. 00:09:54.16\00:09:57.89 Now, Teresa, you're married? 00:09:57.93\00:09:59.63 No. Not married. 00:09:59.66\00:10:01.00 You have children. I do have children. 00:10:01.03\00:10:02.36 Okay. And you took them with you last time? 00:10:02.40\00:10:04.53 Yes, I took them to Kenya, this summer on a family trip. 00:10:04.57\00:10:07.00 Okay. And they loved it. 00:10:07.04\00:10:08.70 Praise the Lord. 00:10:08.74\00:10:10.07 Give me some sense of again your life as you're living it, 00:10:10.11\00:10:15.14 you've got children you're raising, 00:10:15.18\00:10:17.61 prior to going on mission trips? 00:10:17.65\00:10:21.58 Well, I've always had a global perspective of myself, 00:10:21.62\00:10:23.92 but I really wanted that my kids 00:10:23.95\00:10:25.95 would get that aspect of 00:10:25.99\00:10:28.29 there is more in the world than the US. 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.63 And there is service that we can do, 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.56 and be a blessing to other people 00:10:33.60\00:10:35.16 as we travel and get to know the world. 00:10:35.20\00:10:37.53 So that was really 00:10:37.57\00:10:39.73 what prompted me to take my kids. 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.70 Okay. 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.57 Did you see in their lives... 00:10:43.61\00:10:46.71 How can I put this, the flame sort of come on, 00:10:46.74\00:10:49.04 the light sort of come on when they went with you? 00:10:49.08\00:10:52.25 I really did. It really made a difference. 00:10:52.28\00:10:54.98 It made a difference for them to connect 00:10:55.02\00:10:58.25 with other people around the world 00:10:58.29\00:11:00.99 with seeing the needs, 00:11:01.02\00:11:05.33 even though they're kids, they can still see the needs, 00:11:05.36\00:11:07.63 and they're on fire to go again. 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.53 They just absolutely loved it, 00:11:09.56\00:11:12.37 looking forward to the next trip, 00:11:12.40\00:11:14.10 they are talking to their classmates, 00:11:14.14\00:11:16.60 and their family about the experiences 00:11:16.64\00:11:18.84 that they had there, and they absolutely loved it. 00:11:18.87\00:11:22.01 They're what age? 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.38 Eight and twelve. 00:11:23.41\00:11:24.75 Ah-uh, so at the age 00:11:24.78\00:11:26.95 where they can certainly benefit from this, 00:11:26.98\00:11:29.88 dare I say cognitive learners, 00:11:29.92\00:11:31.25 they're old enough to know what's going on, 00:11:31.29\00:11:33.12 and really benefit from the experience. 00:11:33.15\00:11:35.69 Mm-hmm. Praise the Lord. 00:11:35.72\00:11:37.06 Yeah, they're definitely old enough to say, hmm, 00:11:37.09\00:11:39.29 this is not the way I live in the US. 00:11:39.33\00:11:40.80 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.16 Not everyone in the world 00:11:42.20\00:11:43.53 has the exact same experience that I do, 00:11:43.57\00:11:45.93 but yet, I can still enjoy interacting with them, 00:11:45.97\00:11:49.67 playing with them, making friends with them, 00:11:49.70\00:11:53.44 serving with them. 00:11:53.48\00:11:54.81 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:11:54.84\00:11:56.18 I want to come back 00:11:56.21\00:11:57.55 and I want to certainly share this question 00:11:57.58\00:11:59.31 to each of you just sort of mine that. 00:11:59.35\00:12:02.35 One of the reasons why I'm so enthused 00:12:02.38\00:12:06.09 about what Maranatha does is one of the first true miracles 00:12:06.12\00:12:09.02 I saw in my ministry happened on a Maranatha trip. 00:12:09.06\00:12:12.06 There was a young lady... This is a trip to... 00:12:12.09\00:12:15.23 I don't remember if it was Dominican Republic or Panama, 00:12:15.26\00:12:17.50 after while they kind of run together a little bit 00:12:17.53\00:12:20.94 because I did mission trips every year from 1986 to 2002. 00:12:20.97\00:12:24.11 Wow. 00:12:24.14\00:12:25.47 When I was in ministry, we had a young lady. 00:12:25.51\00:12:29.31 Her name was Amanda. 00:12:29.34\00:12:31.18 Her dad told her, "If you are valedictorian of the class, 00:12:31.21\00:12:34.52 I will get you a car. 00:12:34.55\00:12:36.32 It won't be a new car, but I'll get you a car. 00:12:36.35\00:12:38.55 And she was doing great, she was valedictorian in class, 00:12:38.59\00:12:42.89 she was carrying a 3.9, 00:12:42.92\00:12:46.19 and you can run out the decimals, 00:12:46.23\00:12:47.56 you know, kind of thing because she got an A-minus so, 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.77 you know, it wasn't perfect 4.0. 00:12:50.80\00:12:53.10 But she went on a Maranatha trip, 00:12:53.13\00:12:56.44 and I think it was 00:12:56.47\00:12:59.04 Dominican Republic and she worked, 00:12:59.07\00:13:03.14 she carried blocks, she was in the cement mixing, 00:13:03.18\00:13:09.18 she was just doing all of this physical stuff. 00:13:09.22\00:13:12.59 And when she came back home, 00:13:12.62\00:13:15.22 this was a spring break kind of a deal 00:13:15.26\00:13:17.33 so we're heading towards graduation, 00:13:17.36\00:13:19.09 she went into a coma, and the doctor said, 00:13:19.13\00:13:23.63 her mother was a teacher 00:13:23.67\00:13:25.00 in our Adventist Academy in New York. 00:13:25.03\00:13:28.47 He said, when they did the MRI, and some of the other tests, 00:13:28.50\00:13:31.67 he said that it's the size of a tennis ball, 00:13:31.71\00:13:36.21 and kind of oblong shaped like an egg, 00:13:36.24\00:13:39.18 but they said, "We don't know 00:13:39.21\00:13:41.92 how she ever even got off the plane, 00:13:41.95\00:13:45.49 got on the plane." 00:13:45.52\00:13:47.22 They said that her balance should have been affected, 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.62 her speech should have been affected, 00:13:49.66\00:13:52.03 her ability to carry weight should have been affected 00:13:52.06\00:13:54.73 and this thing has been there for a long time, 00:13:54.76\00:13:57.53 but she went on a trip and the amount of work she did 00:13:57.57\00:14:00.50 was almost superhuman 00:14:00.54\00:14:03.34 and she stayed in that coma for a long time, 00:14:03.37\00:14:06.61 and then finally she passed. 00:14:06.64\00:14:08.14 But the doctors said, 00:14:08.18\00:14:10.58 "We don't know how she ever got on a plane, 00:14:10.61\00:14:14.08 and did the kind of things you're telling us that." 00:14:14.12\00:14:16.18 And we did a video of her life, 00:14:16.22\00:14:17.99 and I shot the video and edited it myself. 00:14:18.02\00:14:21.52 The kind of labor that she put out on that trip, 00:14:21.56\00:14:24.13 they said, "How's she doing that? 00:14:24.16\00:14:25.49 That there's no way in the world 00:14:25.53\00:14:26.86 she should have been doing that." 00:14:26.90\00:14:28.23 And even her neurosurgeon came to the church, 00:14:28.26\00:14:31.93 and came to the service, 00:14:31.97\00:14:34.70 and said, "No way, there's no way. 00:14:34.74\00:14:38.14 This makes no medical sense 00:14:38.17\00:14:39.97 that with that kind of sized tumor 00:14:40.01\00:14:42.61 wrapped around the organs that it was in the brain, 00:14:42.64\00:14:45.01 how was that happening?" 00:14:45.05\00:14:47.48 And a lot of people were so impressed 00:14:47.52\00:14:49.85 at the miracle working part of the Lord, 00:14:49.88\00:14:53.25 but also that the Lord chose to do this 00:14:53.29\00:14:55.42 on a Maranatha trip in a foreign country 00:14:55.46\00:14:57.76 that she was able to do this kind of thing. 00:14:57.79\00:15:00.20 Yeah. And I really, I was just impressed with that. 00:15:00.23\00:15:04.93 And since then have always sort of kept an eye on Maranatha 00:15:04.97\00:15:08.30 because of its ability to change lives 00:15:08.34\00:15:10.71 and the miracles that we saw. 00:15:10.74\00:15:12.07 I want to go to our music now. 00:15:12.11\00:15:13.44 And then we're going to come back, 00:15:13.48\00:15:14.81 and spend a little more time with our three guests. 00:15:14.84\00:15:17.91 Our music is coming from Margie Salcedo Rice, 00:15:17.95\00:15:20.35 a longtime friend of this ministry. 00:15:20.38\00:15:22.38 And she is going to be singing, "I Have Fixed My Mind". 00:15:22.42\00:15:25.55 I have fixed my mind on another time 00:15:41.70\00:15:48.84 On another time 00:15:48.88\00:15:55.12 And here I mean to stand until 00:15:55.15\00:16:01.92 God gives me more light 00:16:01.96\00:16:08.63 And that is today, today 00:16:08.66\00:16:15.37 Today until He comes 00:16:15.40\00:16:21.81 I have fixed my mind on another time 00:16:21.84\00:16:29.18 On another time 00:16:29.22\00:16:36.09 I have set my course on the narrow way 00:16:39.36\00:16:46.17 On the narrow way 00:16:46.20\00:16:52.11 For I know that day is close at hand 00:16:52.14\00:16:59.55 For which I watch and pray 00:16:59.58\00:17:05.99 Even so Lord come quickly 00:17:06.02\00:17:12.69 That is my fervent prayer 00:17:12.73\00:17:18.60 For I've caught a glimpse of glory 00:17:18.63\00:17:25.87 And I'm longing to be there 00:17:25.91\00:17:33.48 When shall the Son of Man appear 00:17:47.40\00:17:54.37 The trumpet sound its blast 00:17:54.40\00:18:00.58 And Christ descend with glorious fire 00:18:00.61\00:18:07.78 With all the saints amassed 00:18:07.82\00:18:14.09 We'll rise with those 00:18:14.12\00:18:17.83 Who sleep no more 00:18:17.86\00:18:21.23 To meet Him in the heaven 00:18:21.26\00:18:27.97 When shall the Son 00:18:28.00\00:18:32.17 Of Man appear 00:18:32.21\00:18:37.31 The Son of Man appear 00:18:37.35\00:18:44.55 Even so, Lord come quickly 00:18:44.59\00:18:51.46 That is my fervent prayer 00:18:51.49\00:18:57.57 For I've caught a glimpse of glory 00:18:57.60\00:19:04.37 And I'm longing to be there 00:19:04.41\00:19:11.55 For I've caught a glimpse of glory 00:19:11.58\00:19:19.22 And I'm longing 00:19:19.25\00:19:23.53 To be there 00:19:23.56\00:19:31.10 I have fixed my mind 00:19:34.10\00:19:38.31 On another time 00:19:38.34\00:19:45.08 On another 00:19:45.11\00:19:51.65 Time 00:19:51.69\00:19:59.43 And thank you, Margie Salcedo Rice, 00:20:07.34\00:20:08.77 good friend of the ministry. 00:20:08.80\00:20:10.14 Well done, I Have Fixed My Mind. 00:20:10.17\00:20:11.97 David, I want to come back to you, man, 00:20:12.01\00:20:13.34 because you've got what I say, 00:20:13.38\00:20:14.94 your Maranatha has got many different ways 00:20:14.98\00:20:17.88 that a person can serve. 00:20:17.91\00:20:21.12 Teresa's talking about the family deal. 00:20:21.15\00:20:23.18 Absolutely. 00:20:23.22\00:20:24.55 You can do family, you can do ultimate work out, 00:20:24.59\00:20:26.55 which is good I guess to young people, young adults. 00:20:26.59\00:20:29.02 Teenagers. Okay. 00:25:48.51\00:25:50.95 So after seven years, 00:25:50.98\00:25:52.31 you can request a sabbatical leave 00:25:52.35\00:25:54.88 after seven years. 00:25:54.92\00:25:57.39 Teresa, what do you do for your regular employment? 00:25:57.42\00:26:01.26 I own a construction company with my father and my brother 00:26:01.29\00:26:04.79 and so I have a little bit more flexibility 00:26:04.83\00:26:07.60 than some people to go. 00:26:07.63\00:26:11.93 I do the paperwork not the heavy lifting anymore 00:26:11.97\00:26:14.07 but the paperwork. 00:26:14.10\00:26:16.57 When you go on a Maranatha trip, 00:26:16.60\00:26:18.87 what kind of settles in for you 00:26:18.91\00:26:21.08 as far as what you tend to be doing? 00:26:21.11\00:26:23.51 You know, it depends upon the trip. 00:26:23.55\00:26:24.88 Ah-uh. 00:26:24.91\00:26:26.25 I went in the summer of '16, 00:26:26.28\00:26:29.05 I went to Kenya without my boys, 00:26:29.08\00:26:32.15 and I helped on the metal group 00:26:32.19\00:26:34.06 because that's what I grew up doing, 00:26:34.09\00:26:35.42 putting up metal buildings. 00:26:35.46\00:26:37.06 When I took my boys, 00:26:37.09\00:26:39.19 I was with the kids who were doing VBS, 00:26:39.23\00:26:42.10 doing whatever the day camp kids did 00:26:42.13\00:26:44.87 and when I was in Brazil, I translated. 00:26:44.90\00:26:48.44 So, you know, it's different every time, 00:26:48.47\00:26:51.67 but I like that. 00:26:51.71\00:26:53.04 So you speak Portuguese. I do. 00:26:53.07\00:26:54.41 Bless you heart. 00:26:54.44\00:26:56.38 Is there, David, a typical Maranatha volunteer, 00:26:56.41\00:27:00.35 or do they really span the spectrum as far as age, 00:27:00.38\00:27:05.79 occupation, that kind of thing? 00:27:05.82\00:27:08.39 Is there a typical kind of person, 00:27:08.42\00:27:09.82 or is it sort of just all over the map? 00:27:09.86\00:27:12.19 It's really all over the map. 00:27:12.23\00:27:13.83 There are this kind of a larger number 00:27:13.86\00:27:16.06 of high school volunteers 00:27:16.10\00:27:17.97 and a larger number of retired volunteers 00:27:18.00\00:27:20.84 with a growing number of between that, 00:27:20.87\00:27:23.47 you know, between the 20s to 40s numbers 00:27:23.51\00:27:26.14 that those are actually evening out quite evenly, 00:27:26.17\00:27:29.14 but as far as personality, 00:27:29.18\00:27:31.01 or anything like that I think it's just really, 00:27:31.05\00:27:33.05 like I said before, 00:27:33.08\00:27:34.42 those that have connection with Jesus 00:27:34.45\00:27:36.18 that are ready to let their life shine. 00:27:36.22\00:27:37.99 Yeah, there's all sorts of faiths that are joining us, 00:27:38.02\00:27:41.22 I mean, it's not just Seventh-day Adventists, 00:27:41.26\00:27:42.79 it's not just Christians, in fact, 00:27:42.82\00:27:44.89 it's something most people are searching. 00:27:44.93\00:27:47.66 There's a lot of people that are coming 00:27:47.70\00:27:49.13 that have just gone through tragedy in their life, 00:27:49.16\00:27:51.27 that things are changing, and they're looking for Jesus, 00:27:51.30\00:27:54.80 and so many people are coming with that in mind of, 00:27:54.84\00:27:58.37 I'm going to get something out of this, 00:27:58.41\00:28:00.24 and what happens is that they're blessing other people, 00:28:00.28\00:28:04.95 and getting something. 00:28:04.98\00:28:06.31 So it's a win-win. 00:28:06.35\00:28:08.45 Where do you see... 00:28:08.48\00:28:09.82 I guess I should structure this question so it makes sense. 00:28:09.85\00:28:13.02 Where do you see the most dramatic changes 00:28:13.05\00:28:16.52 per age group? 00:28:16.56\00:28:17.89 Is it teens that changed the most? 00:28:17.93\00:28:19.59 Is it older people that changed the most? 00:28:19.63\00:28:21.13 Where do you tend to see the most dramatic shifts 00:28:21.16\00:28:23.73 in relationship with God, and on fire for the Lord, 00:28:23.77\00:28:27.37 in lifestyle, in conviction, and conversion? 00:28:27.40\00:28:29.70 Where does that sort of play out? 00:28:29.74\00:28:31.11 Well, I say regardless of the age, it is an honor, 00:28:31.14\00:28:34.51 and I can't think of a greater joy 00:28:34.54\00:28:36.85 of just being there 00:28:36.88\00:28:38.35 when someone does find Jesus for that first time, 00:28:38.38\00:28:40.85 when there's that connection 00:28:40.88\00:28:42.22 when you see that light come on and it's just... 00:28:42.25\00:28:46.22 What a privilege, but I'd say most, 00:28:46.25\00:28:48.96 and maybe it's biased, 00:28:48.99\00:28:50.33 but mostly I see it in the teenagers. 00:28:50.36\00:28:52.53 That's how I started with Maranatha, 00:28:52.56\00:28:54.33 I was thrilled to work out, 00:28:54.36\00:28:55.70 and that's the program that I get to run now. 00:28:55.73\00:28:57.97 And it's just a fabulous experience 00:28:58.00\00:29:00.00 to be able to see that light come on in those teenagers, 00:29:00.04\00:29:02.70 and be able to serve that way. 00:29:02.74\00:29:05.44 This summer we had baptisms 00:29:05.47\00:29:08.14 that came out of the two-week experience 00:29:08.18\00:29:10.88 that they had been studying before, 00:29:10.91\00:29:12.25 but then in saving this experience. 00:29:12.28\00:29:13.62 I'd heard before that you could get baptized 00:29:13.65\00:29:15.02 on ultimate workout. 00:29:15.05\00:29:16.38 So they've been studying up, and they've been ready, 00:29:16.42\00:29:18.05 and so they approached the pastor 00:29:18.09\00:29:19.42 at the first instance, 00:29:19.45\00:29:20.79 you know, this is something I want to have happened 00:29:20.82\00:29:22.16 in second Sabbath, 00:29:22.19\00:29:23.53 and so we had planned it out, we're ready to do it, 00:29:23.56\00:29:25.96 down in the river, and lightning, and thunder, 00:29:25.99\00:29:28.73 and all sorts of storms came in 00:29:28.76\00:29:30.37 and so we had to kind of come to plan B, 00:29:30.40\00:29:33.80 which we didn't have. 00:29:33.84\00:29:35.17 And so we stopped at a couple churches 00:29:35.20\00:29:36.71 along the way back home, 00:29:36.74\00:29:38.07 and said, "No, no, we just baptized in the river. 00:29:38.11\00:29:39.57 You know, we don't have a baptism tank 00:29:39.61\00:29:41.34 and so what are we gonna do?" 00:29:41.38\00:29:42.94 And so one of the pastors had a swimming pool, 00:29:42.98\00:29:45.91 and so we took that back to the camp 00:29:45.95\00:29:48.18 that we were staying at, and it was raining so hard 00:29:48.22\00:29:50.99 that we were able to fill that with rain water 00:29:51.02\00:29:53.29 and so we were taking water-off of the roof, 00:29:53.32\00:29:55.09 and filling it up with jugs, 00:29:55.12\00:29:57.39 and they were baptized that same day so... 00:29:57.43\00:29:58.76 Praise the Lord. 00:29:58.79\00:30:00.13 But yeah, that's quite... 00:30:00.16\00:30:01.50 I would say, there's nothing like being there present, 00:30:01.53\00:30:03.40 and being a part of, 00:30:03.43\00:30:04.77 knowing that you're a small part 00:30:04.80\00:30:06.13 in connecting someone with Christ. 00:30:06.17\00:30:07.50 Yeah, yeah, that is very, very exciting. 00:30:07.54\00:30:09.84 Both of my Maranatha trips 00:30:09.87\00:30:12.47 were as a chairman of the board of Northeastern Academy. 00:30:12.51\00:30:14.31 Okay. 00:30:14.34\00:30:15.68 So I had a chance to watch academy students, 00:30:15.71\00:30:17.38 many of whom had been in Adventist schools 00:30:17.41\00:30:20.65 from day one, you know, 00:30:20.68\00:30:23.42 but there you can sort of develop this kind of slow jog 00:30:23.45\00:30:26.86 being in the Adventist bubble. 00:30:26.89\00:30:28.22 You know, you're just gonna jog in along 00:30:28.26\00:30:31.39 and I saw dramatic changes in Adventist kids 00:30:31.43\00:30:36.93 who had kind of been just marking time, 00:30:36.97\00:30:39.60 go on a mission trip and come back on fire, 00:30:39.63\00:30:41.37 truly on fire for the Lord. 00:30:41.40\00:30:42.74 Now I'm in AY, now I'm doing the kind of things, Mary, 00:30:42.77\00:30:45.64 that you were talking about 00:30:45.67\00:30:47.01 that there is this jumpstart to your battery 00:30:47.04\00:30:50.35 that happens when you leave the United States 00:30:50.38\00:30:52.78 because we gave them the... 00:30:52.81\00:30:54.92 Of course, this is the early days of cell phones, 00:30:54.95\00:30:57.35 no cell phones, you know, nothing with a headset, 00:30:57.39\00:30:59.92 we're not having you divorced from your society, 00:30:59.95\00:31:02.59 listening to something, 00:31:02.62\00:31:03.96 so keep your cell phone in your room, 00:31:03.99\00:31:05.43 in fact, we didn't let them bring them on a trip. 00:31:05.46\00:31:07.16 No cell phones, no I, anything, no pads, no pods, 00:31:07.20\00:31:11.13 you know, none of that stuff. 00:31:11.17\00:31:12.50 You're going to fully immerse yourself in this experience, 00:31:12.53\00:31:15.84 so that when you come out of it, 00:31:15.87\00:31:17.64 you have the experience of not transferring your world 00:31:17.67\00:31:21.41 to this country and then bringing your world back, 00:31:21.44\00:31:23.24 we want you in a whole new experience. 00:31:23.28\00:31:24.71 And I think and they squirmed and kind of, you know, 00:31:24.75\00:31:28.42 but once they got into it, 00:31:28.45\00:31:30.09 and realized that there are other kids 00:31:30.12\00:31:31.45 on the other side of the world, 00:31:31.49\00:31:32.82 and these kids are kind of like us 00:31:32.85\00:31:34.19 and we want to know these kids, 00:31:34.22\00:31:35.99 it made dramatic changes in their life. 00:31:36.02\00:31:38.33 Now, Mary, you've gone on a lot. 00:31:38.36\00:31:40.13 Have you seen that too that, 00:31:40.16\00:31:41.50 it hasn't been that way in your own life, 00:31:41.53\00:31:42.86 that when you sort of forget 00:31:42.90\00:31:44.23 who you are and leave that American stuff home, 00:31:44.27\00:31:45.93 and really immerse yourself, it changes you, does it? 00:31:45.97\00:31:48.47 It does. It does. 00:31:48.50\00:31:49.84 It has changed my life immensely 00:31:49.87\00:31:52.14 in regards to the faith and just trusting in God 00:31:52.17\00:31:56.04 through every step especially, because you know, 00:31:56.08\00:31:59.75 at home we take so many things for granted. 00:31:59.78\00:32:01.15 We turn on the faucet and water comes. 00:32:01.18\00:32:03.72 You know, over there in some places 00:32:03.75\00:32:05.25 there's no water, we had to pray for it. 00:32:05.29\00:32:06.99 Can we have some water, Lord? Send us some water. 00:32:07.02\00:32:09.42 And you know, we pray here to bless our food, 00:32:09.46\00:32:12.09 but over there, you know, we pray, I really pray, 00:32:12.13\00:32:14.76 I don't want to get food poisoning, 00:32:14.80\00:32:16.13 or something like that. 00:32:16.16\00:32:17.50 Make sure everything is okay, 00:32:17.53\00:32:18.87 and so we spent a lot more time in prayer which, 00:32:18.90\00:32:20.54 of course, is going to draw you a lot closer to God 00:32:20.57\00:32:23.20 and I see transformations in our young people. 00:32:23.24\00:32:26.37 There was a girl who, 00:32:26.41\00:32:27.74 I've gone on three or four mission trips with her, 00:32:27.78\00:32:30.31 and she is bilingual as well, 00:32:30.35\00:32:32.18 and when we first went to Dominican, 00:32:32.21\00:32:34.32 I would try to get her to help translate with me, 00:32:34.35\00:32:36.28 and she's like, "Oh, I'm shy, 00:32:36.32\00:32:37.75 I don't really want to translate." 00:32:37.79\00:32:39.45 And then we went to Panama the next time, 00:32:39.49\00:32:42.76 and in Spanish churches, 00:32:42.79\00:32:44.46 there's a break between Sabbath school and church, 00:32:44.49\00:32:46.66 so I had excused myself 00:32:46.70\00:32:48.76 between Sabbath school and church and make a break. 00:32:48.80\00:32:50.70 So I said, I just have to go, 00:32:50.73\00:32:52.33 and can you just do it for just five minutes? 00:32:52.37\00:32:54.90 You know, and she's like, 00:32:54.94\00:32:56.27 "Okay, I'll translate the announcement." 00:32:56.30\00:32:57.64 So she got up, and she did it. 00:32:57.67\00:32:59.27 And I was like okay, good, this is how it was meant to be. 00:32:59.31\00:33:01.21 And then the next year, we were at different sites, 00:33:01.24\00:33:04.11 I was translating in one service, 00:33:04.15\00:33:05.48 and she was translating the sermon at another service. 00:33:05.51\00:33:08.32 So it's neat to see the growth from this shy kid 00:33:08.35\00:33:10.62 who kind of didn't want to get upfront, 00:33:10.65\00:33:11.99 and translate after being on a few mission trips 00:33:12.02\00:33:13.86 then she was upfront translating the sermon. 00:33:13.89\00:33:15.42 Praise the Lord. Yeah, it's nice to see that growth. 00:33:15.46\00:33:17.79 Teresa, where did you learn your Portuguese? 00:33:17.83\00:33:20.13 In Brazil. Ah-uh. As a missionary? 00:33:20.16\00:33:23.06 My parents were missionaries. You did say that. Yeah. 00:33:23.10\00:33:25.03 Yes. And so I spent some time in Brazil. 00:33:25.07\00:33:27.74 So you are very handy person to have on mission trips. 00:33:27.77\00:33:30.81 Do your children speak another language at all? 00:33:30.84\00:33:34.14 No, I try to teach them some Portuguese along the way, 00:33:34.18\00:33:37.05 but... 00:33:37.08\00:33:38.41 Yeah, kind of spoon-feed it, they will appreciate, 00:33:38.45\00:33:40.75 that's one thing you'll appreciate later on 00:33:40.78\00:33:42.95 that there was a second language 00:33:42.98\00:33:44.62 in the house that we never got. 00:33:44.65\00:33:46.09 And then I always say that 00:33:46.12\00:33:47.46 if a parent speaks two languages, 00:33:47.49\00:33:49.39 the kids ought to speak two languages too 00:33:49.42\00:33:51.16 because you later on, 00:33:51.19\00:33:52.53 you'll find that Spanish, Portuguese, 00:33:52.56\00:33:54.40 handy languages to know, 00:33:54.43\00:33:56.36 very, very handy languages to know. 00:33:56.40\00:33:59.20 David, coming back to you, how does one find out, 00:33:59.23\00:34:00.87 what's available? 00:34:00.90\00:34:02.24 How we can sign up? 00:34:02.27\00:34:03.61 How do you work your way through that? 00:34:03.64\00:34:04.97 The easiest way is on our website, maranatha.org, 00:34:05.01\00:34:07.54 and there's all the lists of the projects, 00:34:07.58\00:34:09.51 join the voluntary trips, 00:34:09.54\00:34:10.88 and you can look at all the calendars there, 00:34:10.91\00:34:13.35 and all the different countries, 00:34:13.38\00:34:14.72 there's fresh that way, 00:34:14.75\00:34:17.12 there's also a magazine that we can send out to you. 00:34:17.15\00:34:19.65 There's information we can send out. 00:34:19.69\00:34:21.06 There's videos, call our office. 00:34:21.09\00:34:23.02 Yeah. Happy to talk to you. 00:34:23.06\00:34:24.39 Good to hear. 00:34:24.43\00:34:25.76 Speaking of video we got something to look at, 00:34:25.79\00:34:27.13 do we not? 00:34:27.16\00:34:28.50 Yeah, we do. Sure. Set it up for us? 00:34:28.53\00:34:29.86 It's a video about our family projects 00:34:29.90\00:34:31.23 that we do each year so the... 00:34:31.27\00:34:33.27 I'd say the exciting thing about the family projects 00:34:33.30\00:34:35.30 is we do one over Christmas, 00:34:35.34\00:34:37.34 and then a couple over the summer timeframe. 00:34:37.37\00:34:39.34 And so Christmas is important 00:34:39.37\00:34:40.71 because most families are geared 00:34:40.74\00:34:43.24 towards the traditional holiday, 00:34:43.28\00:34:46.48 let's buy each other gifts and whatnot. 00:34:46.51\00:34:47.92 So the Christmas timeframe 00:34:47.95\00:34:49.88 has become this really important time 00:34:49.92\00:34:52.02 where this is the gift 00:34:52.05\00:34:53.99 that we're giving each other this year. 00:34:54.02\00:34:55.49 We're going on this mission trip to serve others. 00:34:55.52\00:34:56.86 Yeah. 00:34:56.89\00:34:58.23 And so it's really come back to change a lot of lives 00:34:58.26\00:35:00.56 that way and perspective so. 00:35:00.60\00:35:02.90 Before we've go to the video, Teresa, 00:35:02.93\00:35:04.60 did you go during a Christmas deal or no? 00:35:04.63\00:35:06.94 It was in summer. That was in summer. 00:35:06.97\00:35:08.47 Okay, are there a lot of people that want to take you up 00:35:08.50\00:35:11.01 on the Christmas option? 00:35:11.04\00:35:12.37 We fill up every year. Really? 00:35:12.41\00:35:14.41 Yeah. 00:35:14.44\00:35:15.78 So we have a hundred people going this Christmas 00:35:15.81\00:35:17.68 to down to David, in Panama. 00:35:17.71\00:35:20.88 Okay, we'll be there. 00:35:20.92\00:35:22.58 Yeah, we'll probably hang out. Sounds good. 00:35:22.62\00:35:25.19 We can use your help. 00:35:25.22\00:35:27.26 Let's take a look. 00:35:27.29\00:35:28.62 We've always wanted to instill 00:35:32.63\00:35:35.76 a spirit of service on our children. 00:35:35.80\00:35:38.97 So we've been looking for 00:35:39.00\00:35:40.94 some form of missionary volunteer type project 00:35:40.97\00:35:45.01 that we can get ourselves involved in. 00:35:45.04\00:35:48.84 And this one came about Maranatha, 00:35:48.88\00:35:51.25 and we thought it would be a great experience 00:35:51.28\00:35:52.88 for Caitlin to see life in the third world. 00:35:52.91\00:35:56.89 My wife and I grew up in a third world country. 00:35:56.92\00:36:00.06 And we wanted our kids to experience 00:36:00.09\00:36:03.12 what it was like and see the change, 00:36:03.16\00:36:05.69 the difference between her childhood and our childhood 00:36:05.73\00:36:09.86 and see that she's definitely growing up 00:36:09.90\00:36:13.54 in a more privileged environment 00:36:13.57\00:36:15.34 and it would be good for her to be exposed 00:36:15.37\00:36:17.14 and see the need and create that spirit 00:36:17.17\00:36:20.84 of wanting to help others. 00:36:20.88\00:36:25.55 We are fairly affluent. 00:36:25.58\00:36:27.58 Our children have grown up in an affluent society, 00:36:27.62\00:36:30.85 and we felt that we really need to go 00:36:30.89\00:36:33.46 to some third world destinations. 00:36:33.49\00:36:35.72 We need to give them a world view 00:36:35.76\00:36:38.29 that differs from how they grew up. 00:36:38.33\00:36:41.43 We want to expose them to a culture 00:36:41.46\00:36:43.26 that has extremely poor people 00:36:43.30\00:36:45.57 that are at the same time really quite satisfied. 00:36:45.60\00:36:48.34 And so that they realize that all these things 00:36:48.37\00:36:50.64 that they think they need, 00:36:50.67\00:36:52.54 these people don't have any of them, 00:36:52.57\00:36:53.91 and they're a lot happier than they are. 00:36:53.94\00:36:57.05 Inside the classroom with the kids, 00:36:57.08\00:36:58.85 it's pretty warm inside. 00:36:58.88\00:37:01.98 And there's a bunch of them smashing together. 00:37:02.02\00:37:06.49 And we sing a few songs for them, 00:37:06.52\00:37:10.36 and they were really happy when we sing songs 00:37:10.39\00:37:12.99 and then they sing a few songs for us so this is fun. 00:37:13.03\00:37:15.30 And so Randy and Savannah 00:37:21.27\00:37:23.41 are talking about Maranatha's family project. 00:37:23.44\00:37:27.04 Wherever it takes place 00:37:27.08\00:37:28.41 those that come meet and discover 00:37:28.44\00:37:30.61 new people and people groups, 00:37:30.65\00:37:33.62 experience new things, 00:37:33.65\00:37:36.72 observe their world through a different lens, 00:37:36.75\00:37:39.35 and learn that giving 00:37:39.39\00:37:40.72 really does feel better than receiving. 00:37:40.76\00:37:43.69 Maranatha's family project. 00:37:43.73\00:37:46.33 What is your family learning on vacation? 00:37:46.36\00:37:48.96 That is really cool. 00:38:01.04\00:38:02.58 The idea of taking families 00:38:02.61\00:38:05.01 then is a big part of what Maranatha seeks to do. 00:38:05.05\00:38:07.62 It's the growing part, absolutely. 00:38:07.65\00:38:09.22 So we're looking at offering even an option here 00:38:09.25\00:38:11.75 in the US 00:38:11.79\00:38:13.12 where it would be a little bit easier for families 00:38:13.15\00:38:14.49 to be able to go 00:38:14.52\00:38:15.86 because by the time you add up four or five people, 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.23 they go international. 00:38:17.26\00:38:18.59 It's a significant contribution. 00:38:18.63\00:38:20.30 Yeah, now, Teresa, you said your son was nine, eight, nine? 00:38:20.33\00:38:24.43 Eight. Eight. 00:38:24.47\00:38:25.80 And my oldest son is 12. Okay. 00:38:25.83\00:38:27.97 Do you have a lower limit that you try to kind of stay above 00:38:28.00\00:38:31.07 or you take them at all ages? 00:38:31.11\00:38:32.44 No, I think that they can go at all ages. 00:38:32.47\00:38:33.84 My son's been on a number of projects, 00:38:33.88\00:38:35.44 and it's impactful. 00:38:35.48\00:38:36.81 I mean, I was telling them earlier this morning 00:38:36.85\00:38:38.38 that I notice a difference in the way 00:38:38.41\00:38:41.78 that he lives his life. 00:38:41.82\00:38:43.42 In fact, we got new neighbors just next door just last month, 00:38:43.45\00:38:47.32 and he saw a little kid playing on his bicycle, 00:38:47.36\00:38:50.13 and he ran over, "What's your name?" 00:38:50.16\00:38:52.03 And he said, "My name's Bryce." "Oh, my name is Crosby." 00:38:52.06\00:38:54.93 And the second question out of his mouth was, 00:38:54.96\00:38:57.17 "Do you trust God?" 00:38:57.20\00:38:58.53 Oh, my soul. 00:38:58.57\00:38:59.90 Yeah, I mean, that's something I never would have asked. 00:38:59.93\00:39:03.00 It was almost like just kind of in panic. 00:39:03.04\00:39:04.37 Oh, how's he's going to respond? 00:39:04.41\00:39:05.74 Yeah. 00:39:05.77\00:39:07.11 But it was just really interesting to see 00:39:07.14\00:39:08.48 how at that age after being exposed to service 00:39:08.51\00:39:12.28 and seeing his dad do that international... 00:39:12.31\00:39:15.18 Yeah, yeah. 00:39:15.22\00:39:16.55 It was just something that was, boy, not ask him. 00:39:16.58\00:39:17.92 Yeah. 00:39:17.95\00:39:19.29 And so we headed to church later that week, 00:39:19.32\00:39:20.89 and he asked me, he said, 00:39:20.92\00:39:22.86 "Dad, how come Bryce isn't going to church?" 00:39:22.89\00:39:25.59 He said he trusts God. 00:39:25.63\00:39:28.30 So there's little conversation started right there. 00:39:28.33\00:39:29.86 Wow. 00:39:29.90\00:39:31.23 Teresa, you sort of alluded to that. 00:39:31.27\00:39:32.67 Have you seen that sort of holy boldness in your children, 00:39:32.70\00:39:37.31 post Maranatha trips? 00:39:37.34\00:39:38.67 Have you seen that kind of assertiveness for the Lord? 00:39:38.71\00:39:41.64 Yes. 00:39:41.68\00:39:43.71 Definitely it increased their relationship with God. 00:39:43.75\00:39:47.18 It made them on fire too 00:39:47.22\00:39:50.59 to talk about going and serving other people 00:39:50.62\00:39:54.06 and the excitement of, 00:39:54.09\00:39:57.76 I want to go, I want to go again. 00:39:57.79\00:39:59.46 I want my friends to go with me. 00:39:59.49\00:40:00.83 I want them to see 00:40:00.86\00:40:02.20 that there are other Adventists in the world. 00:40:02.23\00:40:04.00 There are kids in a different country 00:40:04.03\00:40:06.47 that still go to church 00:40:06.50\00:40:07.97 just like I do every Sabbath morning, 00:40:08.00\00:40:09.80 and to want to go and see that, 00:40:09.84\00:40:13.58 and that my kids have wanted to take their friends 00:40:13.61\00:40:16.95 and their cousins with them. 00:40:16.98\00:40:19.41 And so, it is making a difference. 00:40:19.45\00:40:21.85 I think even in our school, the school that my boys go to, 00:40:21.88\00:40:25.02 you know, all have kids, "Hey, I saw you on Facebook. 00:40:25.05\00:40:28.56 I saw Bryce and Caleb on Facebook, 00:40:28.59\00:40:31.43 this summer in Africa." 00:40:31.46\00:40:32.99 or "You know, hey, 00:40:33.03\00:40:34.40 are you taking me with you next summer?" 00:40:34.43\00:40:36.10 Wow. 00:40:36.13\00:40:37.47 You know, and so it's definitely something 00:40:37.50\00:40:38.83 that my kids are spreading the word, 00:40:38.87\00:40:40.77 and they had a very positive experience, 00:40:40.80\00:40:43.87 and they're on fire to go again. 00:40:43.91\00:40:45.74 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:40:45.77\00:40:47.24 It seems as though your boys are pretty good, 00:40:47.28\00:40:51.61 pretty solid kids, but I want you and Mary 00:40:51.65\00:40:54.98 to talk about from slightly different experiences 00:40:55.02\00:40:59.45 this idea, if you've got a young person 00:40:59.49\00:41:02.46 who maybe doesn't know who they are, or what they are. 00:41:02.49\00:41:06.66 They are aimless, they don't have any focus, 00:41:06.70\00:41:11.93 do you see Maranatha trips 00:41:11.97\00:41:13.77 as a way of helping a young person 00:41:13.80\00:41:15.47 find themselves? 00:41:15.50\00:41:16.84 Maybe they are even acting out, you know, 00:41:16.87\00:41:19.67 so you take off all the electrical accoutrements 00:41:19.71\00:41:24.65 that they're used to draping on themselves, 00:41:24.68\00:41:26.72 and you put them in a foreign situation, 00:41:26.75\00:41:28.58 and you make them work up a sweat. 00:41:28.62\00:41:30.35 Is that a good way in your minds 00:41:30.39\00:41:33.72 to help that child sort of find out who they are, 00:41:33.76\00:41:36.26 and maybe get a hold on Jesus that they've never had before? 00:41:36.29\00:41:40.70 I would say definitely. Mm-hmm. 00:41:40.73\00:41:42.16 I would say for me personally 00:41:42.20\00:41:43.53 because my first mission trip 00:41:43.57\00:41:44.90 was when I was a freshman in PUC. 00:41:44.93\00:41:48.37 That is when I found my life's work. 00:41:48.40\00:41:50.71 I was going to be, I mean, 00:41:50.74\00:41:52.81 I was always planning to be a teacher, 00:41:52.84\00:41:54.44 but I was planning just to do elementary. 00:41:54.48\00:41:57.05 And while on that mission trip 00:41:57.08\00:41:58.91 when I was taking Spanish classes before, 00:41:58.95\00:42:01.18 but I wasn't major in Spanish, 00:42:01.22\00:42:02.88 and so when I was talking to people in Spanish 00:42:02.92\00:42:05.85 having like meaningful conversations, 00:42:05.89\00:42:07.46 not just, "Oh, wow, come on with us," 00:42:07.49\00:42:09.72 you know, like real conversations. 00:42:09.76\00:42:11.09 I said, "Wow, I really like the Spanish thing." 00:42:11.13\00:42:14.43 And that's when I went back 00:42:14.46\00:42:15.80 and decided to major in Spanish, 00:42:15.83\00:42:17.17 and also teach high school. 00:42:17.20\00:42:18.53 So that really gave me, that fine-tuned my focus 00:42:18.57\00:42:22.30 from being on a Maranatha mission trip. 00:42:22.34\00:42:25.34 So we get two different types of answers 00:42:25.37\00:42:28.54 when parents are calling us for their teenagers, 00:42:28.58\00:42:30.08 they say, "Either, 00:42:30.11\00:42:31.65 my kid's going to be really good for this project. 00:42:31.68\00:42:33.92 Or my kid really needs this project, this experience. 00:42:33.95\00:42:37.49 please help us," you know and that's usually what we get, 00:42:37.52\00:42:39.82 and it's really awesome to get those phone calls from parents, 00:42:39.85\00:42:43.32 and say, my kid had no direction, 00:42:43.36\00:42:45.89 didn't have any idea what he was wanted to study, 00:42:45.93\00:42:49.30 where he wanted to go, what he wanted to do, 00:42:49.33\00:42:51.43 and they came back not only, 00:42:51.47\00:42:54.34 you know, praising Jesus for this experience, 00:42:54.37\00:42:56.71 but they know now they want to be a dentist, 00:42:56.74\00:42:58.34 they want to be a doctor, 00:42:58.37\00:42:59.71 they want to be a construction person, 00:42:59.74\00:43:01.08 they want to... 00:43:01.11\00:43:02.44 or they know they don't want to be a dentist, or whatever. 00:43:02.48\00:43:04.85 But that experience completely changes lives absolutely. 00:43:04.88\00:43:07.78 So you get a significant amount of response 00:43:07.82\00:43:12.89 as to how your trip has impacted those lives, 00:43:12.92\00:43:15.76 you hear a lot of that? 00:43:15.79\00:43:17.13 Absolutely, I mean, to the tune of them sending us flowers 00:43:17.16\00:43:20.56 and fruit baskets, and phone calls, 00:43:20.60\00:43:22.33 and thank you letters, 00:43:22.36\00:43:23.70 and it's just an overwhelming response afterwards. 00:43:23.73\00:43:27.20 Talk to me a little bit about and perhaps, 00:43:27.24\00:43:29.27 we can all weigh in on this, it's not an inexpensive thing. 00:43:29.30\00:43:34.31 Is it worth the money? I think we all say, yes. 00:43:34.34\00:43:36.08 It's worth whatever. Amen. 00:43:36.11\00:43:37.45 How can I want to go, 00:43:37.48\00:43:40.65 I've got a young person who wants to go. 00:43:40.68\00:43:42.02 What are some of the kinds of ways 00:43:42.05\00:43:43.39 that we can help young people afford this, 00:43:43.42\00:43:47.99 you know, get money to go? 00:43:48.02\00:43:50.33 Yeah, I'd be interested to hear what examples they have, 00:43:50.36\00:43:52.66 but I also know that there's lots of different ways. 00:43:52.69\00:43:56.20 I mean, you don't have to write a check yourself. 00:43:56.23\00:43:58.67 Many, many of them are selling cookies, 00:43:58.70\00:44:01.00 or doing carwashes, 00:44:01.04\00:44:02.37 or writing letters to be able to do this. 00:44:02.40\00:44:04.91 This isn't something that most of them can afford to do. 00:44:04.94\00:44:07.61 Yeah, just pull out of the pocket. 00:44:07.64\00:44:09.01 Absolutely, a lot of them are getting their churches together 00:44:09.04\00:44:11.78 as a helping support, but it is a team effort. 00:44:11.81\00:44:14.62 Yeah, and I suspect that working to get your money 00:44:14.65\00:44:17.95 kind of sweetens the pot a little bit 00:44:17.99\00:44:20.06 as far as the experience is concerned. 00:44:20.09\00:44:21.79 I had to hustle to do this. It wasn't handed to me. 00:44:21.82\00:44:24.33 I had to kind of work to do this. 00:44:24.36\00:44:25.69 And then you get the joy that comes from service. 00:44:25.73\00:44:30.37 But there are a lot of people that can't go, they are saying, 00:44:30.40\00:44:32.90 "Well, this is something 00:44:32.93\00:44:34.27 that I'm not able to physically go and do. 00:44:34.30\00:44:36.00 I would like to help other people go." 00:44:36.04\00:44:37.61 And so if you're in that boat, 00:44:37.64\00:44:39.21 we definitely have scholarship set up 00:44:39.24\00:44:40.78 so that you can donate towards so other people can go. 00:44:40.81\00:44:43.81 But I've, in fact, I've been on the phone with teenagers, 00:44:43.85\00:44:46.82 they were like, "I really want to go. 00:44:46.85\00:44:48.18 There's no way. 00:44:48.22\00:44:49.55 I don't have any... I don't have a church family. 00:44:49.58\00:44:51.82 My dad's unemployed at the moment, 00:44:51.85\00:44:53.86 and there's just no way that I can go financially." 00:44:53.89\00:44:56.93 So well, let's pray about it, 00:44:56.96\00:44:58.29 so I'm on the phone with them praying about it 00:44:58.33\00:45:00.30 when receptionist comes in, 00:45:00.33\00:45:02.40 and says, "David, you have to take this call." 00:45:02.43\00:45:04.03 I say, I'm on the phone, I'm praying. 00:45:04.07\00:45:05.40 Don't you see what's going on? 00:45:05.43\00:45:06.77 And she's like, "Okay, well, sorry, 00:45:06.80\00:45:08.14 you know, let me put you on hold, 00:45:08.17\00:45:09.50 let me take this other person." 00:45:09.54\00:45:10.87 And it was somebody else 00:45:10.91\00:45:12.24 who was not able to physically go. 00:45:12.27\00:45:13.61 I said, by chance, well, and here I'm like all upset, 00:45:13.64\00:45:17.05 like, here I am taking this call 00:45:17.08\00:45:19.25 with somebody that can't go, 00:45:19.28\00:45:20.62 and I was just talking to somebody that could go. 00:45:20.65\00:45:21.98 I mean, let me finish that conversation, 00:45:22.02\00:45:23.89 you know, God why did this happen? 00:45:23.92\00:45:25.35 And so as I'm listening to her 00:45:25.39\00:45:26.76 about all of her ailments that are happening, 00:45:26.79\00:45:29.59 and all the sicknesses that are going on in her life, 00:45:29.62\00:45:32.39 at the end of that, she's like, 00:45:32.43\00:45:33.76 "Well, is that a possibility that I could just send money, 00:45:33.80\00:45:36.67 and somebody else could go?" 00:45:36.70\00:45:38.63 So before we finished the prayer... 00:45:38.67\00:45:40.80 Oh, yeah. 00:45:40.84\00:45:42.87 The answer is there. That's how God works. 00:45:42.90\00:45:44.54 Praise the Lord. 00:45:44.57\00:45:45.91 So if I'm a person who maybe is just thinking about it, 00:45:45.94\00:45:48.71 and really cannot go, I can just send my money 00:45:48.74\00:45:50.91 and say, "Allocate this to somebody who needs to go." 00:45:50.95\00:45:53.28 Absolutely. 00:45:53.31\00:45:54.65 And that goes for the donations of the buildings too. 00:45:54.68\00:45:56.08 Excellent. 00:45:56.12\00:45:57.45 Many people think that 00:45:57.49\00:45:58.82 Maranatha has got this big check book 00:45:58.85\00:46:00.19 to do all these buildings. 00:46:00.22\00:46:01.56 We have over 100,000 requests for churches, 00:46:01.59\00:46:04.96 80,000 for schools. 00:46:04.99\00:46:06.33 You know, just like blowing numbers, 00:46:06.36\00:46:08.03 and that's growing each year as the Adventist Church grows. 00:46:08.06\00:46:10.63 And so, if you look at, 00:46:10.67\00:46:12.40 you know, the cost of that goes into each building, 00:46:12.43\00:46:16.27 if you look at, "Okay, well, I'm gonna fundraising, 00:46:16.30\00:46:17.77 I'm gonna build a church." 00:46:17.81\00:46:19.14 Okay, great, you're building a church, 00:46:19.17\00:46:20.61 but you're also providing an experience 00:46:20.64\00:46:23.01 for volunteers to go, so it's a double benefit. 00:46:23.04\00:46:25.35 Yeah, I guess the requests must be legit, 00:46:25.38\00:46:27.68 the Conference President in the West Panama Conference 00:46:27.72\00:46:30.55 is a close family friend, 00:46:30.59\00:46:31.92 and Union President is an acquaintance, 00:46:31.95\00:46:33.66 and I happen to know the number of requests 00:46:33.69\00:46:35.72 out of Panama alone could bury you. 00:46:35.76\00:46:38.09 I mean, just, you can spend all your money in Panama, 00:46:38.13\00:46:40.20 and you've got a world field. 00:46:40.23\00:46:41.56 So there are certainly, 00:46:41.60\00:46:42.93 if the money is there you got a place to spend it. 00:46:42.96\00:46:44.43 Absolutely. And spend it well. 00:46:44.47\00:46:46.27 Ladies, I want you to do something, 00:46:46.30\00:46:47.70 I'm gonna ask you one of those high concept 00:46:47.74\00:46:50.47 and ontological questions we ask every now and again 00:46:50.51\00:46:54.01 and you don't have a long time to give me the answer, 00:46:54.04\00:46:56.85 but give me some sense of your life. 00:46:56.88\00:46:58.91 This is Mary pre-Maranatha. This is Mary now. 00:46:58.95\00:47:02.48 This is Teresa and family, pre-Maranatha. 00:47:02.52\00:47:04.79 This is Teresa now. 00:47:04.82\00:47:06.22 As far as your growth, your world view, 00:47:06.25\00:47:08.86 your perspective on God, and your church, 00:47:08.89\00:47:11.53 and service, pre, post, can you do that? 00:47:11.56\00:47:16.80 Who wants to go first? 00:47:16.83\00:47:19.53 I guess, I will. That's not a toe in the water. 00:49:00.37\00:49:03.30 That's kind of diving in full gainer layout, 00:49:03.34\00:49:06.04 you know, kind of thing. 00:49:06.07\00:49:07.41 So obviously, there's been a change in you, 00:49:07.44\00:49:09.01 and your experience over the last several years? 00:49:09.04\00:49:11.71 I would say it's changed my life immensely like faith. 00:49:11.75\00:49:15.18 It's taught me to pray over every single thing, everything. 00:49:15.22\00:49:20.26 I was at big lake. 00:49:20.29\00:49:21.62 And we were driving the tractor, 00:49:21.66\00:49:23.96 and the lady couldn't get the E-brake to go down. 00:49:23.99\00:49:26.19 Sometimes people pull it up too hard 00:49:26.23\00:49:27.56 and it doesn't go down. 00:49:27.60\00:49:28.93 I said, well, let me try it. 00:49:28.96\00:49:30.30 And I started, well, okay, I just paused, 00:49:30.33\00:49:31.90 and just prayed in my head about it, 00:49:31.93\00:49:33.27 and then it went down. 00:49:33.30\00:49:34.64 And she's like, "Oh, that's neat, what did you do?" 00:49:34.67\00:49:36.00 I said, I prayed. 00:49:36.04\00:49:38.01 Because it's taught me to pray 00:49:38.04\00:49:39.37 without ceasing over every single little thing. 00:49:39.41\00:49:42.21 There are things that we think are little, 00:49:42.24\00:49:43.75 they're all important to God. 00:49:43.78\00:49:45.61 It's changed my life physically 00:49:45.65\00:49:48.12 and that I am in better physical shape 00:49:48.15\00:49:49.88 from all the manual labor on this mission trips. 00:49:49.92\00:49:52.45 And I avoid sugar and dairy because I want to stay healthy 00:49:52.49\00:49:55.92 so I cannot miss out on mission trips. 00:49:55.96\00:49:58.49 And miss out on activities. 00:49:58.53\00:50:00.23 And it has changed my perspective 00:50:00.26\00:50:01.76 in daily life whereas, 00:50:01.80\00:50:03.60 I'm more apt to pass out glow tracks more 00:50:03.63\00:50:06.80 because I want to keep that mission trip feeling 00:50:06.84\00:50:09.10 going like, well, I need to be doing something, 00:50:09.14\00:50:10.67 I'm a missionary every day, 00:50:10.71\00:50:12.37 whether I'm on a mission trip or not, 00:50:12.41\00:50:14.01 whether I'm on my job or not, 00:50:14.04\00:50:15.74 whether I'm at the grocery store, 00:50:15.78\00:50:17.11 I'm a missionary every day. 00:50:17.15\00:50:19.08 And so I look at every day as a mission trip, 00:50:19.11\00:50:21.68 every day as a day to serve God, 00:50:21.72\00:50:23.39 tell them of His love, 00:50:23.42\00:50:24.75 and just try to get His home sooner. 00:50:24.79\00:50:26.79 Yeah, yeah, yeah. 00:50:26.82\00:50:28.32 And the reason I asked you that question 00:50:28.36\00:50:29.69 because you both have Adventist backgrounds, 00:50:29.72\00:50:32.59 and I find that if you've been 00:50:32.63\00:50:35.23 in the Adventist bubble from day one, 00:50:35.26\00:50:38.37 it's easy to settle into this jog, 00:50:38.40\00:50:40.80 you know, to kind of just jog along. 00:50:40.84\00:50:43.44 And I mean, you're going forward, 00:50:43.47\00:50:44.81 but you jog, you know, 00:50:44.84\00:50:46.81 and that the Maranatha experience 00:50:46.84\00:50:48.48 tends to put you into more of a sprint mode. 00:50:48.51\00:50:49.84 Oh, yeah. 00:50:49.88\00:50:51.21 You know... 00:50:51.25\00:50:52.58 It's intense.
