my mother to the church

and that was the starting point.

So at about the age of 13,

I started to attend
the Adventist school

in Christchurch in the
South Island of New Zealand.

So what did you do
after you went through school,

Well, when I left school,

the health food company

in New Zealand.

that went around selling

of the Sanitarium

So well, I was
on a van assistant,

helping deliver the products.

Then I became, I got
promoted to a van salesman.

And then I had a couple of jobs.

And then I eventually started
my own marketing business

and that grew over 30 years

to one of the largest

promotional marketing
companies in New Zealand.

And we used to do all
the promotional aspects

of retailers, their
promotions, their point-of-sale.

And so I was sort of
a self-made marketer.

Okay, but how did God then,

at what point
did He reached down

and tap you on
the shoulder and say

"Hey, Jim, I want you
to work in ministry again,

and in particular
with orphan children."

Well, I think, it
goes back before that.

I really loved the church.

And the first role I
took was the New Zealand

marketing and sales
manager for Sanitarium,

so Sanitarium's
owned by the church.
00:11:46.50\00:11:49.14
And so for four
and a half years,
00:11:49.17\00:11:51.07
I had a very
senior role doing that.

And I enjoyed that

and enjoyed working for
the church in that role.

Then I went back
to working for myself.

And then with
my second marriage,

I married a
lovely American lady.

And the deal was that she
was to come to New Zealand

and she did.

But somewhere the
deal went a little astray.

and I ended up in America.

And then at the
first board meeting,

they were having some challenges

So let's talk about, how did
Asian Aid actually get started?

Well, Asian Aid
started in Australia

about 55 years ago.

There was a lady called
Maisie Fook and she started.

She visited Hong Kong,

and she started sending

food parcels and
clothing to Hong Kong.

And then she visited India.

And then at a later stage,

Helen Eager came
on board to help her.

And so Asian Aid started.

a little in a house

So they established

and it was based in Nebraska.

And so when I started, I
took over the USA chapter.

who went with her to India.

and just filled with the
love of God for these children.

But my friend told me,
she called me actually,

skyping when she was in India.

like Mother Teresa or somebody

years was Helen with Asia Aid.

So all of these
children know her as mama Helen,

the grown-ups
were coming up to her

followed her around

who'd been through their schools

America don't see India as Asia.

so the first key reason
we started looking at it
