I want to spend my life 00:00:01.50\00:00:07.44 Mending broken people 00:00:07.47\00:00:12.34 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.37\00:00:18.61 Removing pain 00:00:18.65\00:00:23.72 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.75\00:00:29.89 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.92\00:00:34.46 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.50\00:00:40.30 Mending broken people 00:00:40.34\00:00:45.71 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.74\00:00:51.41 Mending broken people 00:00:51.45\00:00:55.05 Hello, and we welcome you once again to 3ABN Today. 00:01:07.50\00:01:11.03 We are so glad that you've tuned in, 00:01:11.07\00:01:13.03 and we have an interesting program for you. 00:01:13.07\00:01:15.67 I think you'll really enjoy this, 00:01:15.70\00:01:18.17 but I would be amiss 00:01:18.21\00:01:19.54 if I didn't take a moment to thank you 00:01:19.57\00:01:21.91 for your love, and your prayers, 00:01:21.94\00:01:23.88 and your financial support of this ministry. 00:01:23.91\00:01:26.85 Just want to particularly thank all of those of you 00:01:26.88\00:01:29.78 who are members of the GO Evangelistic Team. 00:01:29.82\00:01:34.59 Without your monthly support, we couldn't do what we do, 00:01:34.62\00:01:38.49 so thank you so much. 00:01:38.53\00:01:40.66 We are going to talk today about children. 00:01:40.70\00:01:45.90 In Matthew 19:14, let me set this up, 00:01:45.93\00:01:49.57 Jesus was there and speaking and the people began 00:01:49.60\00:01:54.94 bringing their little children before Him, 00:01:54.98\00:01:57.31 and His disciples started pushing the little kids away 00:01:57.35\00:02:01.45 because they thought, 00:02:01.48\00:02:02.82 "Hey, he's got more important things to do 00:02:02.85\00:02:04.92 than to deal with the children." 00:02:04.95\00:02:06.35 And here's what Jesus said in Matthew 19:14, 00:02:06.39\00:02:10.33 "But Jesus said let the little children come to me 00:02:10.36\00:02:14.23 and do not forbid them, 00:02:14.26\00:02:16.60 for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 00:02:16.63\00:02:19.43 And he laid his hands on them." 00:02:19.47\00:02:23.27 A child, enriching a child for Christ 00:02:23.30\00:02:27.11 is so important to get the training they need 00:02:27.14\00:02:32.41 when they're young to learn of Jesus 00:02:32.45\00:02:34.98 so that He can direct their paths 00:02:35.02\00:02:36.95 throughout their lives. 00:02:36.99\00:02:38.65 And we will talk today about children who are in great need, 00:02:38.69\00:02:42.82 not only are they in spiritual need as we all are, 00:02:42.86\00:02:47.36 but they're in great physical need. 00:02:47.40\00:02:48.73 So let me introduce our special guests to you, 00:02:48.76\00:02:51.10 my dear friend and brother in Christ, Jim Rennie. 00:02:51.13\00:02:54.24 Jim, we're so glad that you're here with us today. 00:02:54.27\00:02:57.61 Thanks, Shelley. It's great to be back at 3ABN. 00:02:57.64\00:03:00.34 And you've been here a number of times before. 00:03:00.38\00:03:02.44 Yes, you know. 00:03:02.48\00:03:03.81 But you don't have your sidekick Helen Eager with you. 00:03:03.85\00:03:06.25 No, no, Helen's in Nepal right now. 00:03:06.28\00:03:08.82 Okay. 00:03:08.85\00:03:10.19 Jim, you are the CEO of Child Impact International, 00:03:10.22\00:03:15.49 formerly known as Asian Aid. 00:03:15.52\00:03:17.79 Yes. 00:03:17.83\00:03:19.16 So we're going to talk about 00:03:19.19\00:03:21.20 Child Impact International today 00:03:21.23\00:03:23.80 and what they're doing, why they're doing it, 00:03:23.83\00:03:27.20 and how we can all participate in this. 00:03:27.24\00:03:29.80 But before we do, we've got special music. 00:03:29.84\00:03:32.74 And this is, when I say special, 00:03:32.77\00:03:35.24 I think, Neville Peter is one of the most special people 00:03:35.28\00:03:39.85 that I've ever met. 00:03:39.88\00:03:41.22 He is as you may or may not know he's blind, 00:03:41.25\00:03:45.75 and he actually had said 00:03:45.79\00:03:49.62 that he doesn't want to be healed of his blindness 00:03:49.66\00:03:52.79 because the first thing that he wants to see, 00:03:52.83\00:03:55.93 the first face he wants to see 00:03:55.96\00:03:58.83 when his sight is restored, it's Jesus. 00:03:58.87\00:04:01.40 So he's wanting to wait till the resurrection 00:04:01.44\00:04:04.11 and see Jesus coming to get us. 00:04:04.14\00:04:06.61 But Neville has a great talent, 00:04:06.64\00:04:09.21 not only on the piano, but he's an excellent singer. 00:04:09.24\00:04:12.08 And he writes almost all of his own music. 00:04:12.11\00:04:15.35 So here's a song by Neville Peter, 00:04:15.38\00:04:17.19 and it is called "Forget About Myself". 00:04:17.22\00:04:20.92 I forget about myself 00:04:36.10\00:04:42.38 When I worship you 00:04:42.41\00:04:45.81 When I worship you 00:04:45.85\00:04:50.22 I forget about myself 00:04:50.25\00:04:56.66 When I worship you 00:04:56.69\00:05:00.90 When I worship you 00:05:00.93\00:05:05.57 Not just only in your temple 00:05:05.60\00:05:08.90 But every second of the day 00:05:12.54\00:05:16.51 I forget about myself 00:05:19.58\00:05:25.15 When I worship you 00:05:25.19\00:05:31.06 Lord, I forget 00:05:31.09\00:05:35.66 About myself 00:05:35.70\00:05:39.37 When I honor you 00:05:39.40\00:05:42.77 When I honor you 00:05:42.80\00:05:47.01 I forget about myself 00:05:47.04\00:05:53.65 When I honor you 00:05:53.68\00:05:57.99 Lord, in humbleness 00:06:01.86\00:06:05.46 I'm coming 00:06:05.49\00:06:08.83 In obedience to your will 00:06:08.86\00:06:14.60 So I forget about myself 00:06:14.64\00:06:21.51 When I worship you 00:06:21.54\00:06:26.48 Lord, I'm coming 00:06:26.51\00:06:29.18 With more than just 00:06:29.22\00:06:34.86 A sacrifice of praise 00:06:34.89\00:06:38.79 I'm bringing a heart 00:06:42.00\00:06:45.53 That longs to know you 00:06:45.57\00:06:50.91 In all, all your wonderful ways 00:06:50.94\00:06:55.81 God, I wish 00:06:55.84\00:06:58.51 Lord, I wish that I could show you 00:06:58.55\00:07:04.42 Just how much that I adore you 00:07:04.45\00:07:11.39 So I forget about myself 00:07:11.43\00:07:17.27 Father, I forget about myself 00:07:17.30\00:07:24.51 Lord, I forget 00:07:24.54\00:07:26.98 About myself 00:07:27.01\00:07:31.65 When I worship you 00:07:36.58\00:07:39.42 There's no time to think about 00:07:43.06\00:07:45.59 Anything else 00:07:45.63\00:07:47.53 Lord, when I 00:07:47.56\00:07:51.03 Worship you 00:07:51.07\00:07:57.01 What a beautiful message in that song. 00:08:02.74\00:08:04.98 And that's the way all of his songs are, 00:08:05.01\00:08:07.28 they're just moving. 00:08:07.32\00:08:09.38 And they have, they resonate with me so much. 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.49 You know, I'm gonna say this, 00:08:12.52\00:08:14.09 I may get in trouble for saying it, 00:08:14.12\00:08:15.82 but I was thinking sometimes we feel 00:08:15.86\00:08:18.69 a bit depressed or oppressed, 00:08:18.73\00:08:21.63 and boy, it's easy to fall into a pity party. 00:08:21.66\00:08:26.37 Someone said that self-pity is straight 00:08:26.40\00:08:29.94 from the pits of hell. 00:08:29.97\00:08:31.87 And what a prescription is in that song 00:08:31.91\00:08:35.68 if you listen to those lyrics, 00:08:35.71\00:08:37.58 if, I just want to encourage you, 00:08:37.61\00:08:39.65 if you're feeling just beat up, oppressed, depressed, 00:08:39.68\00:08:43.92 worship the Lord because as you worship, 00:08:43.95\00:08:47.19 you will forget about yourself. 00:08:47.22\00:08:49.22 Okay, our special guest today is Jim Rennie 00:08:49.26\00:08:53.03 who is the CEO of Child Impact International. 00:08:53.06\00:08:56.23 Jim, it is just so good to have you back here again. 00:08:56.26\00:08:59.30 Thank you, privilege to be here. 00:08:59.33\00:09:01.57 Tell me, I don't think we spend much time 00:09:01.60\00:09:03.94 talking about who you are. 00:09:03.97\00:09:05.91 Let's back up before we get into 00:09:05.94\00:09:08.88 what Child Impact International is doing. 00:09:08.91\00:09:12.01 Tell us a little bit about Jim Rennie, 00:09:12.05\00:09:13.82 did you grow up in a Christian home? 00:09:13.85\00:09:16.08 Well, you can tell, I'm not from around here. 00:09:16.12\00:09:18.45 I'm a missionary from New Zealand. 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.72 A Kiwi. A Kiwi. 00:09:20.76\00:09:23.22 I was born in New Zealand. 00:09:23.26\00:09:24.63 I'm a New Zealand citizen. 00:09:24.66\00:09:26.76 And we were living on a farm 00:09:26.80\00:09:30.30 and at about the age of 12, 00:09:30.33\00:09:34.27 the grandfather of the guy who owned the farm 00:09:34.30\00:09:39.11 used to come out and, you know, help on the farm, 00:09:39.14\00:09:43.45 and he was a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:09:43.48\00:09:45.51 He was the father of Pastor Desmond Hills 00:09:45.55\00:09:50.22 who's well-known, was at the GC for a while. 00:09:50.25\00:09:53.86 And so he introduced my mother to the church 00:09:53.89\00:09:58.26 and that was the starting point. 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.76 So at about the age of 13, 00:10:00.80\00:10:02.86 I started to attend the Adventist school 00:10:02.90\00:10:06.63 in Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand. 00:10:06.67\00:10:10.14 So what did you do after you went through school, 00:10:10.17\00:10:13.58 went to college, tell us a little of your background? 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.95 Well, when I left school, 00:10:16.98\00:10:18.81 I worked on a van for the health food company 00:10:18.85\00:10:23.28 in New Zealand. 00:10:23.32\00:10:24.65 They had van salesmen that went around selling 00:10:24.69\00:10:27.96 the breakfast cereals and health foods 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.73 of the Sanitarium Health Food Company. 00:10:30.76\00:10:33.63 So well, I was on a van assistant, 00:10:33.66\00:10:35.83 helping deliver the products. 00:10:35.86\00:10:39.03 Then I became, I got promoted to a van salesman. 00:10:39.07\00:10:43.37 And then I had a couple of jobs. 00:10:43.41\00:10:46.44 And then I eventually started my own marketing business 00:10:46.47\00:10:51.41 more by default 00:10:51.45\00:10:53.08 and that grew over 30 years 00:10:53.11\00:10:56.69 to one of the largest 00:10:56.72\00:10:58.22 promotional marketing companies in New Zealand. 00:10:58.25\00:11:01.56 And we had offices in Australia and Singapore. 00:11:01.59\00:11:05.56 And we used to do all the promotional aspects 00:11:05.59\00:11:09.23 of retailers, their promotions, their point-of-sale. 00:11:09.26\00:11:14.17 And so I was sort of a self-made marketer. 00:11:14.20\00:11:17.84 Okay, but how did God then, 00:11:17.87\00:11:20.08 at what point did He reached down 00:11:20.11\00:11:23.01 and tap you on the shoulder and say 00:11:23.04\00:11:26.38 "Hey, Jim, I want you to work in ministry again, 00:11:26.41\00:11:31.35 and in particular with orphan children." 00:11:31.39\00:11:34.19 Well, I think, it goes back before that. 00:11:34.22\00:11:38.53 I really loved the church. 00:11:38.56\00:11:40.00 And the first role I took was the New Zealand 00:11:40.03\00:11:43.16 marketing and sales manager for Sanitarium, 00:11:43.20\00:11:46.47 so Sanitarium's owned by the church. 00:11:46.50\00:11:49.14 And so for four and a half years, 00:11:49.17\00:11:51.07 I had a very senior role doing that. 00:11:51.11\00:11:54.84 And I enjoyed that 00:11:54.88\00:11:56.48 and enjoyed working for the church in that role. 00:11:56.51\00:12:00.65 Then I went back to working for myself. 00:12:00.68\00:12:05.49 And then with my second marriage, 00:12:05.52\00:12:08.22 I married a lovely American lady. 00:12:08.26\00:12:11.36 And the deal was that she was to come to New Zealand 00:12:11.39\00:12:14.43 and she did. 00:12:14.46\00:12:15.96 But somewhere the deal went a little astray. 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.87 It went south. 00:12:18.90\00:12:20.50 Well, it went north, and I ended up in America. 00:12:20.54\00:12:24.81 And initially I wasn't sure what I was going to do. 00:12:24.84\00:12:29.01 I actually did some work with Amazing Facts 00:12:29.04\00:12:32.01 and really loved that. 00:12:32.05\00:12:33.55 And then one day I was at ASI, my very first day at ASI, 00:12:33.58\00:12:38.45 and I was standing in the food line, 00:12:38.49\00:12:40.82 and someone approached me and said, 00:12:40.86\00:12:42.66 "Would you go on the board of Asian Aid?" 00:12:42.69\00:12:46.26 And I knew Asian Aid 00:12:46.29\00:12:47.66 from Australia where it started. 00:12:47.70\00:12:49.56 I knew Helen Eager, so I took the board role. 00:12:49.60\00:12:53.54 And then at the first board meeting, 00:12:53.57\00:12:57.31 they were having some challenges 00:12:57.34\00:12:58.97 with the organization, 00:12:59.01\00:13:00.68 so I took a six-month contract 00:13:00.71\00:13:03.68 to run Asian Aid and restructure it. 00:13:03.71\00:13:06.38 We moved up from Nebraska. 00:13:06.41\00:13:08.35 So I'm now just about 00:13:08.38\00:13:11.02 nine years into my six month contract. 00:13:11.05\00:13:13.36 There you go. 00:13:13.39\00:13:15.69 I knew nothing about Asian Aid. 00:13:15.72\00:13:17.79 I knew nothing about the mission field. 00:13:17.83\00:13:20.03 I'd had a lot to do with church schools. 00:13:20.06\00:13:22.63 And from the moment I stepped into the countries 00:13:22.66\00:13:28.37 where we operate, 00:13:28.40\00:13:29.74 I just fell in love with those kids. 00:13:29.77\00:13:33.27 Everyone should just go and see 00:13:33.31\00:13:36.44 what we see as a part of our work. 00:13:36.48\00:13:40.85 So let's talk about, how did Asian Aid actually get started? 00:13:40.88\00:13:47.56 Well, Asian Aid started in Australia 00:13:47.59\00:13:49.82 about 55 years ago. 00:13:49.86\00:13:52.09 There was a lady called Maisie Fook and she started. 00:13:52.13\00:13:56.00 She visited Hong Kong, 00:13:56.03\00:13:58.20 and she started sending 00:13:58.23\00:14:00.77 food parcels and clothing to Hong Kong. 00:14:00.80\00:14:04.57 And then she visited India. 00:14:04.61\00:14:06.98 And then at a later stage, 00:14:07.01\00:14:08.68 Helen Eager came on board to help her. 00:14:08.71\00:14:11.71 And so Asian Aid started. 00:14:11.75\00:14:14.62 Then they started a little in a house 00:14:14.65\00:14:17.35 in a country town called Wauchope in Australia. 00:14:17.39\00:14:20.96 And Helen's been to America many times, 00:14:20.99\00:14:24.99 many of our supporters and your viewers know, 00:14:25.03\00:14:28.70 and Asian Aid grew. 00:14:28.73\00:14:30.87 And at a certain point, 00:14:30.90\00:14:32.87 it grew to about 6,500 children 00:14:32.90\00:14:36.64 sponsored an Adventists mission schools. 00:14:36.67\00:14:39.91 And at some stage, 00:14:39.94\00:14:43.61 the CEO back then had a vision to grow Asian Aid. 00:14:43.65\00:14:47.68 So they established a chapter in the USA, 00:14:47.72\00:14:52.72 and it was based in Nebraska. 00:14:52.75\00:14:55.12 And so when I started, I took over the USA chapter. 00:14:55.16\00:15:01.63 And, you know, I'm sure many of you, 00:15:01.66\00:15:03.83 if you don't recognize her name, 00:15:03.87\00:15:05.53 you'd recognize her when you saw Helen Eager. 00:15:05.57\00:15:08.30 She is just a little pint-sized dynamo. 00:15:08.34\00:15:12.64 I guarantee you and the interesting thing 00:15:12.67\00:15:14.98 I had a dear friend who went with her to India. 00:15:15.01\00:15:17.65 And as you said, if you go and you see these children 00:15:17.68\00:15:21.38 who are in such great need, 00:15:21.42\00:15:23.72 your heart is opened 00:15:23.75\00:15:26.39 and just filled with the love of God for these children. 00:15:26.42\00:15:29.66 But my friend told me, she called me actually, 00:15:29.69\00:15:32.56 I think, we were skyping when she was in India. 00:15:32.59\00:15:35.10 And she said, "Helen is just like Mother Teresa or somebody 00:15:35.13\00:15:39.50 because all of the children. 00:15:39.53\00:15:41.00 I don't know how many years was Helen with Asia Aid. 00:15:41.04\00:15:44.64 Forty years. Forty years. 00:15:44.67\00:15:46.37 So all of these children know her as mama Helen, 00:15:46.41\00:15:51.35 but she said, everywhere they went, 00:15:51.38\00:15:54.25 the grown-ups were coming up to her 00:15:54.28\00:15:56.75 and still calling her mama. 00:15:56.79\00:15:59.05 And they just followed her around 00:15:59.09\00:16:00.69 because these are people who'd been through their schools 00:16:00.72\00:16:03.56 been educated, 00:16:03.59\00:16:04.93 and now are productive members of their towns and villages. 00:16:04.96\00:16:09.83 So Helen is just kind of a legend 00:16:09.86\00:16:13.34 in her own time if you will. 00:16:13.37\00:16:14.70 Yes. 00:16:14.74\00:16:16.07 Well, Helen's retired now, but she hasn't retired. 00:16:16.10\00:16:18.47 Right now her favorite spot at the moment, 00:16:18.51\00:16:22.14 not favorite but the spot where she's really involved 00:16:22.18\00:16:25.88 with is Nepal. 00:16:25.91\00:16:27.55 And right now she says, 00:16:27.58\00:16:28.92 she spends about half of her time in Nepal, 00:16:28.95\00:16:31.62 and half of her time back in Australia. 00:16:31.65\00:16:34.36 But she sort of retired from Asian Aid as such, 00:16:34.39\00:16:39.33 she's still supportive. 00:16:39.36\00:16:41.36 She visited with us at ASI last year. 00:16:41.40\00:16:44.73 And she's very excited about 00:16:44.77\00:16:46.50 what we're doing with Child Impact 00:16:46.53\00:16:48.87 and is very supportive of it. 00:16:48.90\00:16:50.84 Okay, so Asian Aid's been established for many years, 00:16:50.87\00:16:55.04 what made you decide to go through the name change. 00:16:55.08\00:16:59.18 And I think we have the two different logos 00:16:59.21\00:17:00.92 that we'd like to put up. 00:17:00.95\00:17:02.28 Yeah, let's put up the blue... 00:17:02.32\00:17:03.65 We had Asian Aid is the way you began, 00:17:03.69\00:17:07.02 but now it is Child Impact International. 00:17:07.06\00:17:11.09 Yeah. Why the name change? 00:17:11.13\00:17:12.99 Well, it obviously started as Asian Aid. 00:17:13.03\00:17:16.97 And on the screen, there you can see the previous logo 00:17:17.00\00:17:21.27 on the right and the new one on the left. 00:17:21.30\00:17:23.30 So we've changed our name 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.34 and that's about all that's changed as the name. 00:17:25.37\00:17:29.68 I guess, one of the key reasons was that most of our activity, 00:17:29.71\00:17:34.25 we have about Child Impact being the USA, 00:17:34.28\00:17:38.49 we now have over 3,500 children sponsored 00:17:38.52\00:17:42.52 in six countries 00:17:42.56\00:17:44.23 Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and now Myanmar. 00:17:44.26\00:17:50.17 And we've just taken our first small project 00:17:50.20\00:17:53.10 in Papua New Guinea. 00:17:53.13\00:17:56.87 Most of the people in America don't see India as Asia. 00:17:56.91\00:18:01.34 So when we said Asia, people within China, Japan, 00:18:01.38\00:18:05.55 the Philippines, 00:18:05.58\00:18:07.18 so the first key reason we started looking at it 00:18:07.22\00:18:09.88 about two or three years ago 00:18:09.92\00:18:12.12 that there was a bit of confusion 00:18:12.15\00:18:13.99 as to what Asia was. 00:18:14.02\00:18:15.86 And we don't operate in those countries. 00:18:15.89\00:18:19.33 The second thing is aid. 00:18:19.36\00:18:21.13 We're not an aid agency. 00:18:21.16\00:18:23.26 There are lots of aid agencies out there. 00:18:23.30\00:18:26.10 And they fulfill a role, but we're uniquely different. 00:18:26.13\00:18:29.84 And so we... 00:18:29.87\00:18:31.77 It really didn't say what we were. 00:18:31.81\00:18:36.44 So it was real tough, the strong heritage 00:18:36.48\00:18:39.41 in the name Asian Aid, this history. 00:18:39.45\00:18:42.28 And it was a big decision. 00:18:42.32\00:18:44.75 So there were other reasons as well. 00:18:44.79\00:18:50.59 The other key reason was that the name didn't reflect 00:18:50.63\00:18:53.86 what we do. 00:18:53.90\00:18:55.40 We impact on the lives 00:18:55.43\00:18:57.50 of thousands of children every day. 00:18:57.53\00:19:00.97 And so your brand has to reflect what you do, 00:19:01.00\00:19:05.74 and so Child Impact International sees it. 00:19:05.77\00:19:10.05 The other thing is 00:19:10.08\00:19:11.41 that it allows us to go outside Asia. 00:19:11.45\00:19:14.18 Now we're not ready to, 00:19:14.22\00:19:16.12 but already we're looking at other countries 00:19:16.15\00:19:19.55 where we've had a demand. 00:19:19.59\00:19:23.32 So they were the real key reasons 00:19:23.36\00:19:25.83 of why we made the change. 00:19:25.86\00:19:27.93 Now there are other sundry reasons. 00:19:27.96\00:19:31.80 Asian Aid Australia is going in a different direction to us, 00:19:31.83\00:19:36.04 so we wanted clear clarity on who we were in the field. 00:19:36.07\00:19:41.34 When you've got two different Asian Aids, 00:19:41.38\00:19:44.05 it gets a bit confusing in a 110 schools. 00:19:44.08\00:19:48.18 So we wanted to avoid the confusion. 00:19:48.22\00:19:51.85 So they were the main reasons. 00:19:51.89\00:19:54.52 Now, it's not easy to do because we have a jar at work. 00:19:54.56\00:20:00.73 And every time I say Asian Aid, 00:20:00.76\00:20:03.00 I have to put a dollar in the jar 00:20:03.03\00:20:05.50 because when you've been saying it all the time, 00:20:05.53\00:20:08.57 it's very easy. 00:20:08.60\00:20:09.94 And so far, I've got it right on your show. 00:20:09.97\00:20:14.31 And so the change has been made. 00:20:14.34\00:20:15.94 I heard you in their practicing, 00:20:15.98\00:20:18.15 Child Impact International, Child Impact International. 00:20:18.18\00:20:21.42 Yeah. 00:20:21.45\00:20:22.78 But we've also just invested, 00:20:22.82\00:20:25.39 a donor was very supportive of them. 00:20:25.42\00:20:27.46 We've invested in a new IT system 00:20:27.49\00:20:30.39 to manage our children. 00:20:30.43\00:20:32.33 And we really want to do things a lot better 00:20:32.36\00:20:36.06 because the key to sponsorship 00:20:36.10\00:20:38.67 is the link between the child and the donor. 00:20:38.70\00:20:41.94 So we're bringing some big changes now in our IT. 00:20:41.97\00:20:46.44 We just asked our donors to be patient with us 00:20:46.47\00:20:49.14 on the transition. 00:20:49.18\00:20:51.01 Now, but apart from that nothing changes, 00:20:51.05\00:20:54.35 we've still got the same policies, 00:20:54.38\00:20:56.99 the same activity, 00:20:57.02\00:20:59.05 the same board, 00:20:59.09\00:21:00.76 and we're still located in Collegedale, Tennessee. 00:21:00.79\00:21:05.56 We recently purchased, the Lord blessed us. 00:21:05.59\00:21:08.60 And we were able to get a house on a property, 00:21:08.63\00:21:12.57 so we've set up our office in Ooltewah, 00:21:12.60\00:21:16.37 near Collegedale, Ooltewah, Tennessee. 00:21:16.40\00:21:20.08 So nothing will change from the donors' end, 00:21:20.11\00:21:25.81 but we just think it's a bit of a bold move, 00:21:25.85\00:21:29.48 but it totally says what we do. 00:21:29.52\00:21:32.62 We impact on child's lives with education. 00:21:32.65\00:21:36.49 And we impact on child's lives from a spiritual point of view. 00:21:36.52\00:21:40.80 Amen. 00:21:40.83\00:21:42.16 Eighty-five percent of our children 00:21:42.20\00:21:44.77 are non-Adventists 00:21:44.80\00:21:46.20 to where we've put in an Adventist mission school. 00:21:46.23\00:21:49.10 Amen. 00:21:49.14\00:21:50.47 Now let's do talk about, 00:21:50.51\00:21:51.84 and first let me say, I like your new logo. 00:21:51.87\00:21:53.81 Yeah. 00:21:53.84\00:21:55.18 And it is a bold move to do a name change of a ministry. 00:21:55.21\00:21:58.55 I know that when 3ABN just changed our logo 00:21:58.58\00:22:02.32 that it took our viewers a little while 00:22:02.35\00:22:05.32 to, some of them to accept and appreciate the new logo, 00:22:05.35\00:22:09.76 but going through a name change is difficult. 00:22:09.79\00:22:12.23 So you're working in India, and Sri Lanka, and Nepal, 00:22:12.26\00:22:16.97 and these different places, what is the work that you do. 00:22:17.00\00:22:21.77 Some people may not have known about Asian Aid 00:22:21.80\00:22:25.91 which is now Child Impact International? 00:22:25.94\00:22:28.71 What is Child Impact International doing? 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.91 Well, we're a very unique ministry 00:22:31.95\00:22:34.75 in that we're a fully supportive ministry 00:22:34.78\00:22:37.52 of the Adventist Church, 00:22:37.55\00:22:38.95 and our core activity is child sponsorship. 00:22:38.99\00:22:43.06 So a person can sponsor a child and we take them based on need 00:22:43.09\00:22:48.30 and put them in an Adventist mission school. 00:22:48.33\00:22:51.17 So the child is either a day student 00:22:51.20\00:22:55.07 where they walk to the local school 00:22:55.10\00:22:57.44 or a boarder, 00:22:57.47\00:22:58.97 and depending on the level of sponsorship, 00:22:59.01\00:23:02.28 it supports their education. 00:23:02.31\00:23:04.71 If they're a boarding student, boarding at the school, 00:23:04.75\00:23:07.68 uniform and books. 00:23:07.72\00:23:09.42 So it normally considerably covers, 00:23:09.45\00:23:12.79 sometimes not all of their costs, 00:23:12.82\00:23:15.49 but at least 90% plus of their costs. 00:23:15.52\00:23:19.09 So it's, you're giving a child an education. 00:23:19.13\00:23:22.16 And you're introducing them to Jesus. 00:23:22.20\00:23:26.43 We have a small amount in Sri Lanka 00:23:26.47\00:23:29.44 at Lakpahana College. 00:23:29.47\00:23:31.77 In India, we have about 2,500 sponsored children 00:23:31.81\00:23:37.41 in about 80 schools, all Adventist schools. 00:23:37.45\00:23:41.28 Now when they graduate from high school, 00:23:41.32\00:23:44.79 they go to college. 00:23:44.82\00:23:46.15 So we do have students and non-Adventist universities 00:23:46.19\00:23:50.93 and tertiary students. 00:23:50.96\00:23:53.93 In Nepal, we've got about 60 students in a school 00:23:53.96\00:23:58.60 who are joining Scheer Adventist Hospital. 00:23:58.63\00:24:03.14 The other two countries that we are now 00:24:03.17\00:24:05.34 are Bangladesh and Myanmar. 00:24:05.37\00:24:08.24 Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated countries 00:24:08.28\00:24:12.15 in the world. 00:24:12.18\00:24:13.52 And I've visited Bangladesh twice now 00:24:13.55\00:24:17.12 and the need of Adventist mission schools 00:24:17.15\00:24:21.76 there is just overwhelming. 00:24:21.79\00:24:23.83 We only have 200 children at the moment, 00:24:23.86\00:24:26.56 but I could take a thousand children tomorrow. 00:24:26.59\00:24:29.76 Now, Jim, when you say that some are day students, 00:24:29.80\00:24:34.14 some are boarding students, 00:24:34.17\00:24:36.71 is the boarding or the boarding students is this like 00:24:36.74\00:24:39.67 and is there an orphanage, 00:24:39.71\00:24:41.41 I mean tell us about the housing arrangements? 00:24:41.44\00:24:44.65 Well, yes, a boarding student, the school has 00:24:44.68\00:24:48.48 a boys' dormitory and a girls' dormitory. 00:24:48.52\00:24:51.02 And so they eat, sleep in the dormitories 00:24:51.05\00:24:54.42 and go home for the holidays. 00:24:54.46\00:24:57.26 The second aspect of our work 00:24:57.29\00:25:00.46 is that we support for church run orphanages in India. 00:25:00.50\00:25:06.53 Okay. 00:25:06.57\00:25:07.90 And we also have two special need school. 00:25:07.94\00:25:10.94 We have the school for the blind 00:25:10.97\00:25:13.07 and the school for the deaf. 00:25:13.11\00:25:14.84 Now those six institutions are run by the church, 00:25:14.88\00:25:19.45 but funded by our sponsors, 00:25:19.48\00:25:22.35 and ourselves that support Australia and us. 00:25:22.38\00:25:25.72 Your supporters, and let me just say 00:25:31.76\00:25:34.06 that our work has been blessed by 3ABN. 00:25:34.10\00:25:37.77 3ABN and the Lord's blessing 00:25:37.80\00:25:41.30 has been the corner of our success and our growth. 00:25:41.34\00:25:45.14 And I can say that the unique opportunity 00:25:45.17\00:25:49.88 that 3ABN gives ministries like ours, 00:25:49.91\00:25:54.12 there are thousands of children in schools because of 3ABN. 00:25:54.15\00:25:58.89 And we as a ministry just want to say how grateful we are. 00:25:58.92\00:26:04.03 You know, I think that it amazes me 00:26:04.06\00:26:07.00 the faith that God gave Danny Shelton. 00:26:07.03\00:26:09.33 Yes. 00:26:09.36\00:26:10.70 And when you think about it, Danny has, you know, his one... 00:26:10.73\00:26:13.60 When God told him to build a network, 00:26:13.64\00:26:16.37 a television channel that would reach the world 00:26:16.40\00:26:18.94 with the undiluted truth of the three angels' messages. 00:26:18.97\00:26:22.34 The one thing that Danny said was, 00:26:22.38\00:26:24.55 "Okay, God, as long as I don't have to beg for money." 00:26:24.58\00:26:28.08 So we don't have beg a phones, 00:26:28.12\00:26:29.78 we don't have these praise a phones 00:26:29.82\00:26:31.35 that some people call, 00:26:31.39\00:26:32.72 but he had the faith to begin immediately 00:26:32.75\00:26:37.26 showcasing and highlighting other ministries, 00:26:37.29\00:26:40.86 and even asking people to donate to other ministries. 00:26:40.90\00:26:44.83 And God has honored that because Danny doesn't... 00:26:44.87\00:26:48.64 He knows that God has counted his resources, 00:26:48.67\00:26:51.67 and he's not been found wanting. 00:26:51.71\00:26:55.01 When you're talking about these orphanages, 00:26:55.04\00:26:59.11 what would happen to these children 00:26:59.15\00:27:01.62 if they weren't there? 00:27:01.65\00:27:02.98 Right. 00:27:03.02\00:27:04.35 Perhaps, while I'm talking, you may want to play 00:27:04.39\00:27:05.82 some of the bigger role of our activity. 00:27:05.85\00:27:07.29 Surely. 00:27:07.32\00:27:09.92 Well, these children just come from such diverse backgrounds, 00:27:09.96\00:27:14.40 I was just going to say that your supporters, 00:27:14.43\00:27:17.17 and there's Helen arriving at the Dave School. 00:27:17.20\00:27:20.44 Your viewers have been very supportive 00:27:23.97\00:27:26.47 of Sunrise Orphanage, 00:27:26.51\00:27:28.44 and this is Mrs. Lomacang visiting Sunrise. 00:27:28.48\00:27:32.18 And Sunrise now has in the country, 00:27:32.21\00:27:36.25 it's 160 children. 00:27:36.28\00:27:38.49 And the children come 00:27:38.52\00:27:40.66 from such horrific and dramatic backgrounds 00:27:40.69\00:27:45.16 that sometimes you can't comprehend it. 00:27:45.19\00:27:47.73 Like two years ago, four children were brought in, 00:27:47.76\00:27:52.33 a brother and a sister, 00:27:52.37\00:27:53.90 and two kids who'd been taken off the railway station. 00:27:53.94\00:27:57.07 They had been living on the railway station begging. 00:27:57.11\00:28:00.54 They are from where a mother might die 00:28:00.58\00:28:05.41 and the father can't cope. 00:28:05.45\00:28:07.28 So some of them are orphans, but they're not orphans, 00:28:07.32\00:28:10.95 but they have a parent, but that parent can't cope. 00:28:10.99\00:28:14.96 Or has just abandoned. 00:28:14.99\00:28:16.32 Or abandoned some. 00:28:16.36\00:28:17.83 I mean, I was very touched 00:28:17.86\00:28:23.10 when Sunrise used to be in its old building. 00:28:23.13\00:28:26.87 And they got up one morning 00:28:26.90\00:28:28.37 and here was a girl tied to the lamppost outside. 00:28:28.40\00:28:32.34 Oh, my... 00:28:32.37\00:28:33.71 Someone had tied her to the post. 00:28:33.74\00:28:35.08 Now we think how shocking, 00:28:35.11\00:28:37.41 but there may have been a grandparent, an aunty 00:28:37.45\00:28:40.88 that simply couldn't feed the girl, 00:28:40.92\00:28:42.78 they couldn't cope. 00:28:42.82\00:28:44.15 And they knew that putting out there would get her safety. 00:28:44.19\00:28:48.76 So the children come from a wide background. 00:28:48.79\00:28:53.76 Now both the government and us 00:28:53.80\00:28:57.20 are making increased efforts to ensure 00:28:57.23\00:29:00.97 that the children are not behind a wall, 00:29:01.00\00:29:04.54 all right, that they maintain contact with their tribe, 00:29:04.57\00:29:08.38 with their family. 00:29:08.41\00:29:09.88 And in fact, we have our building inspection going on 00:29:09.91\00:29:14.88 where we're going to actually create some rooms 00:29:14.92\00:29:17.82 so that the relatives can visit the child. 00:29:17.85\00:29:22.39 We have to improve that the relationship 00:29:22.42\00:29:26.23 between the child and their tribe, 00:29:26.26\00:29:28.63 or their village, and the family. 00:29:28.66\00:29:30.70 So they come from mix backgrounds. 00:29:30.73\00:29:35.34 Now the challenge I have to be honest with you. 00:29:35.37\00:29:38.21 Right now, we're struggling with finances 00:29:38.24\00:29:41.01 for our orphanages. 00:29:41.04\00:29:43.71 Unfortunately, the change of direction with Australia, 00:29:43.75\00:29:47.18 and some other major supporters has changed recently. 00:29:47.22\00:29:51.85 And there are four church orphanages in Australia, 00:29:51.89\00:29:57.26 sorry, in India. 00:29:57.29\00:29:59.76 They're just... 00:29:59.79\00:30:01.13 We're struggling to keep the children, you know, fed. 00:30:01.16\00:30:05.83 And so this Christmas, 00:30:05.87\00:30:08.74 we will be making a special appeal. 00:30:08.77\00:30:12.17 So the orphanages are struggling right now. 00:30:12.21\00:30:15.84 They're doing amazing job. 00:30:15.88\00:30:17.71 They're not perfect, 00:30:17.75\00:30:19.18 but they're doing an amazing work, 00:30:19.21\00:30:21.15 and so that's a special need. 00:30:21.18\00:30:25.75 So actually then Child Impact International 00:30:25.79\00:30:28.36 you are working directly 00:30:28.39\00:30:30.39 with the church with these orphanages. 00:30:30.43\00:30:32.86 You said, they are church run 00:30:32.89\00:30:34.66 so when people if you donate to this, 00:30:34.70\00:30:37.20 you're all, it's just, you're donating 00:30:37.23\00:30:39.33 to church mission really too. 00:30:39.37\00:30:42.30 I met a pastor, 00:30:42.34\00:30:44.57 I was speaking at Eden Valley. 00:30:44.61\00:30:47.31 And I met a pastor who was there, 00:30:47.34\00:30:50.71 who was one of your sponsored students in the past. 00:30:50.75\00:30:55.98 And he said that he had been on the street when he was, 00:30:56.02\00:31:00.46 I believe five years old. 00:31:00.49\00:31:04.13 They had a family of about eight children, 00:31:04.16\00:31:06.96 and the parents just simply said, 00:31:07.00\00:31:09.86 "We can't afford to feed all eight." 00:31:09.90\00:31:11.97 And they turned three of the children out. 00:31:12.00\00:31:14.74 He was five years old 00:31:14.77\00:31:16.10 and they turned him out on the street. 00:31:16.14\00:31:17.47 And he lived on the street 00:31:17.51\00:31:18.87 from five till he was nearly 12 years old, 00:31:18.91\00:31:22.04 and he passed by an Adventist school. 00:31:22.08\00:31:25.71 I mean, an Adventist church, and he heard the singing, 00:31:25.75\00:31:28.15 he was drawn to it. 00:31:28.18\00:31:29.75 And as he came to look into the window, 00:31:29.78\00:31:32.89 the pastor's wife saw him, 00:31:32.92\00:31:34.89 she came around and invited him in, 00:31:34.92\00:31:38.16 but she made him clean himself up 00:31:38.19\00:31:39.79 because he was quite filthy 00:31:39.83\00:31:41.20 from what we would call dumpster diving I'm gonna say. 00:31:41.23\00:31:44.83 And then he went into the church and heard, 00:31:44.87\00:31:48.67 and he said, she was such a nice woman. 00:31:48.70\00:31:50.81 Well, that pastor arranged 00:31:50.84\00:31:52.67 through your organization to get him. 00:31:52.71\00:31:56.08 I mean to get him as a sponsored student. 00:31:56.11\00:32:01.55 And then here he is, he was back on the streets, 00:32:01.58\00:32:05.22 and the pastor didn't know, he searched all over for him, 00:32:05.25\00:32:07.76 and found him and said, "Do you want to go to school?" 00:32:07.79\00:32:10.09 So this man finished the school as a sponsored student, 00:32:10.13\00:32:14.90 and then he went into college, and he became a pastor. 00:32:14.93\00:32:17.67 And he's doing a mighty work. 00:32:17.70\00:32:19.53 I mean, he's got a radio program 00:32:19.57\00:32:22.80 where he's speaking, 00:32:22.84\00:32:25.01 and this is on a charismatic network 00:32:25.04\00:32:29.54 where he's talking about the three angels' messages, 00:32:29.58\00:32:33.88 the Revelation, and he is actually 00:32:33.92\00:32:36.28 teaching pastors of other denominations. 00:32:36.32\00:32:41.62 So when you invest in sponsoring a child, 00:32:41.66\00:32:46.86 or in helping the orphanage, it is amazing how... 00:32:46.90\00:32:52.20 The impact that you're making 00:32:52.23\00:32:53.64 is not just on the life of that child, 00:32:53.67\00:32:55.97 but then they turn around, 00:32:56.00\00:32:57.51 and make an impact on the life of so many others. 00:32:57.54\00:33:01.21 So I know that JD and I, and I just have a confession. 00:33:01.24\00:33:08.18 It's good for the soul 00:33:08.22\00:33:09.58 but hard on the reputation, isn't it? 00:33:09.62\00:33:11.52 JD and I have sponsored a child for many, many years, 00:33:11.55\00:33:15.46 but recently through a credit card change, 00:33:15.49\00:33:18.89 we've let that sponsorship slip, 00:33:18.93\00:33:21.96 and I've got to do that. 00:33:22.00\00:33:23.80 Remind me when we finish this program, 00:33:23.83\00:33:26.33 I need you to just go and sign-up and sponsor again 00:33:26.37\00:33:29.44 because it's such a blessing. 00:33:29.47\00:33:31.07 Talk about the special relationship 00:33:31.11\00:33:33.07 between sponsor and child? 00:33:33.11\00:33:35.24 Well, I think it became obvious to me as time goes on 00:33:35.28\00:33:40.58 that it's bigger than just sponsoring a child. 00:33:40.62\00:33:43.92 Yes, you have a specific child that you sponsor, 00:33:43.95\00:33:48.79 and the money goes direct from you to us, 00:33:48.82\00:33:52.26 to our office in the country, and direct to the school. 00:33:52.29\00:33:56.23 And the school was paid on the basis 00:33:56.26\00:33:58.77 of that specific child being present. 00:33:58.80\00:34:04.01 And one of the other things about us as an organization 00:34:04.04\00:34:09.44 that over 90% of the funds that we send overseas, 00:34:09.48\00:34:13.72 we give back to the church through church schools. 00:34:13.75\00:34:17.19 So we are a very supportive ministry of the church. 00:34:17.22\00:34:21.89 You are getting over a nasty flue, weren't you? 00:34:25.43\00:34:28.73 Yeah. I'm sorry. 00:34:28.76\00:34:30.10 Ninety percent is an amazing amount. 00:34:30.13\00:34:33.74 So you are... 00:34:33.77\00:34:35.20 This is you then as sponsoring a child, 00:34:35.24\00:34:38.07 but you're paying the money to the church. 00:34:38.11\00:34:40.28 Yes. And then there's other benefits. 00:34:40.31\00:34:43.04 First of all, the family benefit. 00:34:43.08\00:34:45.51 You know, these families are poor, 00:34:45.55\00:34:47.18 the parents love their children, 00:34:47.22\00:34:49.52 but suddenly they're given hope 00:34:49.55\00:34:51.85 because their child so it has an impact on the family. 00:34:51.89\00:34:55.62 It has an impact on the village because the child goes back 00:34:55.66\00:34:59.23 with a higher esteem and does things in the village. 00:34:59.26\00:35:02.93 And also introduces the villagers to the Lord. 00:35:02.96\00:35:04.47 Yes, but then the critical thing is, 00:35:04.50\00:35:07.30 it introduces them to Jesus. 00:35:07.34\00:35:08.80 Amen. 00:35:08.84\00:35:10.17 And especially the ones in boarding schools. 00:35:10.21\00:35:14.08 You know, the work in these countries, 00:35:14.11\00:35:16.61 if you go and talk to the workers, 00:35:16.64\00:35:19.71 it's amazing how many have been sponsored children. 00:35:19.75\00:35:23.18 And right now in Myanmar, 00:35:23.22\00:35:25.35 the church is just so desperate for workers 00:35:25.39\00:35:28.66 that the ones coming through the school system 00:35:28.69\00:35:31.73 are critical to the future of the church 00:35:31.76\00:35:34.43 in these countries 00:35:34.46\00:35:35.83 on a far greater scale than here. 00:35:35.86\00:35:39.40 And so sponsorship is much bigger 00:35:39.43\00:35:43.20 than educating the child. 00:35:43.24\00:35:45.11 The child gets an education that I'd say 85% of them 00:35:45.14\00:35:50.01 that we take them by strong need 00:35:50.05\00:35:52.88 that they would struggle to get an education probably enough, 00:35:52.91\00:35:56.32 either not at all, 00:35:56.35\00:35:57.69 or in a very poor government school. 00:35:57.72\00:36:00.12 Now if they continue with their college and tertiary, 00:36:00.16\00:36:03.93 and so providing they meet certain criteria, 00:36:03.96\00:36:07.73 we will continue to sponsor them through university. 00:36:07.76\00:36:11.73 And I'm surprised that how many of them go on 00:36:11.77\00:36:13.74 to be nurses and doctors... 00:36:13.77\00:36:15.10 Oh, church leaders. 00:36:15.14\00:36:16.47 Many of them are going into being pastors 00:36:16.50\00:36:18.91 and church leaders, and they come back to. 00:36:18.94\00:36:23.04 You know, this is what impressed me, 00:36:23.08\00:36:24.41 I remember speaking with Helen that she said so many of them, 00:36:24.45\00:36:27.62 they go off some of them to England for school, 00:36:27.65\00:36:30.35 but most of them come back 00:36:30.39\00:36:32.22 to actually work in their villages afterwards. 00:36:32.25\00:36:35.26 So what, when we're talking about 00:36:35.29\00:36:38.86 introducing them to Jesus, 00:36:38.89\00:36:41.50 tell us about the religious practices over there, 00:36:41.53\00:36:44.60 and how likely would they even be 00:36:44.63\00:36:47.14 able to hear the name of Jesus in that environment? 00:36:47.17\00:36:51.11 Oh, well, they're going to a church school. 00:36:51.14\00:36:54.91 So the church school was an Adventist school. 00:36:54.94\00:36:58.11 So the level of spirituality and the amount they get 00:36:58.15\00:37:02.72 varies from school to school. 00:37:02.75\00:37:04.72 But what I'm referring to is without those schools, 00:37:04.75\00:37:08.02 what is the real predominant religion of India? 00:37:08.06\00:37:12.33 The chances of those children meeting Jesus 00:37:12.36\00:37:16.46 would be very low, very low 00:37:16.50\00:37:19.57 so the percentages are high of who would find Jesus. 00:37:19.60\00:37:25.21 Most of them are... 00:37:25.24\00:37:26.81 Most of the Indians are Hindu. 00:37:26.84\00:37:29.14 Hindu. Yes. 00:37:29.18\00:37:30.51 And they worship thousands of gods. 00:37:30.55\00:37:33.55 Correct. There're all different backgrounds and religions. 00:37:33.58\00:37:39.69 Now as I mentioned we have the blind school, 00:37:39.72\00:37:42.09 and the deaf school 00:37:42.12\00:37:43.46 which fulfill a very unique role. 00:37:43.49\00:37:46.66 And the blind school has about 160 children, 00:37:46.70\00:37:51.60 and the deaf school. 00:37:51.63\00:37:53.47 And once again, those children... 00:37:53.50\00:37:56.64 These children who attend these two special schools, 00:37:56.67\00:38:00.08 simply, most of them wouldn't have had an education. 00:38:00.11\00:38:03.58 You know, we hear countless stories of blind children 00:38:03.61\00:38:07.75 who are just left in the village 00:38:07.78\00:38:09.48 because their parents are embarrassed 00:38:09.52\00:38:12.02 and don't know what to do. 00:38:12.05\00:38:15.16 Deaf children are the same. 00:38:15.19\00:38:16.93 So those schools carry out a key role. 00:38:16.96\00:38:20.76 Amen. 00:38:20.80\00:38:22.13 The other interesting path 00:38:22.16\00:38:24.00 that we're now growing into 00:38:24.03\00:38:26.30 is a project we call "Operation Child Rescue". 00:38:26.33\00:38:32.21 We've all heard about trafficking. 00:38:32.24\00:38:33.68 Yes. 00:38:33.71\00:38:35.04 Trafficking is beyond comprehension, 00:38:35.08\00:38:37.35 even here in the States and all parts of the world, 00:38:37.38\00:38:41.18 children and girls are being trafficked. 00:38:41.22\00:38:43.82 And this is sex traffic? 00:38:43.85\00:38:46.65 Sex trafficking. 00:38:46.69\00:38:48.26 Now we were in India, 00:38:48.29\00:38:51.33 and we met a lady who does trafficking rescues, 00:38:51.36\00:38:56.53 lovely Christian lady. 00:38:56.56\00:38:59.10 She'd make lovely Adventist, and she's showing interest, 00:38:59.13\00:39:02.50 but she has a small team 00:39:02.54\00:39:04.71 that goes and rescues girls from brothels. 00:39:04.74\00:39:08.74 And we were just so touched with what we saw. 00:39:08.78\00:39:13.15 And so we have been supporting her. 00:39:13.18\00:39:15.95 And in fact, another ministry, 00:39:15.98\00:39:17.52 Voice of Prophecy had been working with us to build... 00:39:17.55\00:39:21.72 We have a rescue home. 00:39:21.76\00:39:23.36 So when these girls are grabbed from the brothels, 00:39:23.39\00:39:26.19 they're put in the rescue home. 00:39:26.23\00:39:28.20 And so we're very excited about that. 00:39:28.23\00:39:31.07 We can't do trafficking on a big stage, 00:39:31.10\00:39:34.44 but to know we're making a difference there is huge. 00:39:34.47\00:39:39.37 And, you know, I just want to point out 00:39:39.41\00:39:40.91 that these aren't people, these young girls, 00:39:40.94\00:39:44.11 and they're very, often very, very young. 00:39:44.15\00:39:47.45 It's not that they decided to run away from home 00:39:47.48\00:39:50.32 and go into prostitution, they've been snatched, or sold, 00:39:50.35\00:39:54.66 and they're forced into prostitution. 00:39:54.69\00:39:58.09 So it's very sad. 00:39:58.13\00:39:59.59 And quite often, the parents... 00:39:59.63\00:40:02.30 Someone comes to the village and says, 00:40:02.33\00:40:04.33 "Look, we'll educate your girl, or she works in our factory 00:40:04.37\00:40:08.70 and we'll give her an education." 00:40:08.74\00:40:10.64 And they pay the parents money, 00:40:10.67\00:40:12.67 and then they never see their daughter again. 00:40:12.71\00:40:14.84 Yeah. 00:40:14.88\00:40:16.21 We're also... 00:40:16.24\00:40:17.58 We operate a slum school in Vizag, India. 00:40:17.61\00:40:20.95 And so we're rescuing slum children. 00:40:20.98\00:40:24.89 This full parched operation child rescue is trafficking, 00:40:24.92\00:40:28.99 slum children, orphans which we have discussed. 00:40:29.02\00:40:32.26 And then we work 00:40:32.29\00:40:33.63 with an Adventist Baby Rescue Organization 00:40:33.66\00:40:37.23 in India 00:40:37.27\00:40:38.97 who look after abandoned babies. 00:40:39.00\00:40:42.70 So Operation Child Rescue is something we want to grow 00:40:42.74\00:40:48.64 because once again, it's child focused 00:40:48.68\00:40:51.31 and it's exciting, and it's a new area for us. 00:40:51.35\00:40:57.09 What I'm interested in knowing in your... 00:40:57.12\00:41:00.62 When you mentioned that you're putting in new IT services. 00:41:00.66\00:41:06.13 Are you talking about trying to connect? 00:41:06.16\00:41:08.20 I know the child, when you're a sponsor, 00:41:08.23\00:41:10.50 you'll get regular updates and letters from your children. 00:41:10.53\00:41:14.57 But are you trying to put them in touch on the Internet or...? 00:41:14.60\00:41:18.67 No, we have to be very careful. 00:41:18.71\00:41:20.78 We have to hide 00:41:20.81\00:41:23.38 the donor's name from the child. 00:41:23.41\00:41:25.51 We can't have the child giving 00:41:25.55\00:41:27.72 because we don't want people talking direct to children. 00:41:27.75\00:41:30.62 Yes. 00:41:30.65\00:41:31.99 We have to observe very strict child protection protocols. 00:41:32.02\00:41:36.76 Well, the first they speak to is management. 00:41:36.79\00:41:38.86 Okay. 00:41:38.89\00:41:40.23 When you've got 3,500 children, we have field officers 00:41:40.26\00:41:44.33 who have to go around the schools 00:41:44.37\00:41:45.97 checking them out there, checking the standards, 00:41:46.00\00:41:48.84 and just checking on the children. 00:41:48.87\00:41:51.21 So the field officer will have a foreign app, 00:41:51.24\00:41:53.98 and he'll update the information 00:41:54.01\00:41:56.34 so that we've got current information on the children. 00:41:56.38\00:42:01.18 Then there is... 00:42:01.22\00:42:02.55 everyone Gets what's called an APR, 00:42:02.58\00:42:05.15 and then your performance report. 00:42:05.19\00:42:07.39 So you get to know wards and all summary 00:42:07.42\00:42:11.09 of how your child's doing at school and also letters. 00:42:11.13\00:42:15.53 But instead of doing them by mile and post, 00:42:15.56\00:42:19.93 we'll upload them and donors 00:42:19.97\00:42:21.54 will be able to read them online. 00:42:21.57\00:42:23.81 So we're just trying to lower the costs, 00:42:23.84\00:42:26.91 but speed up the communication 00:42:26.94\00:42:29.44 between the donor and the child. 00:42:29.48\00:42:30.98 All right. 00:42:31.01\00:42:32.35 So let's talk about how... 00:42:32.38\00:42:34.55 because I'm sure, 00:42:34.58\00:42:35.92 if you can see the deplorable conditions 00:42:35.95\00:42:38.55 that these children live in. 00:42:38.59\00:42:40.22 It's so many of them are starving, 00:42:40.26\00:42:44.89 they're on the streets, they're being sold into sex, 00:42:44.93\00:42:48.06 through sex trafficking. 00:42:48.10\00:42:50.50 Tell us how you can become a donor? 00:42:50.53\00:42:53.54 And how sponsorship works? 00:42:53.57\00:42:55.80 Well, there's a number of ways, 00:42:55.84\00:42:58.21 at the end we'll show our website and phone number. 00:42:58.24\00:43:02.38 You can actually go online, 00:43:02.41\00:43:04.85 and have a look at and choose a child, 00:43:04.88\00:43:09.85 or you can give us a call, 00:43:09.88\00:43:11.89 and talk to us that you like a little girl, 00:43:11.92\00:43:15.92 where's the biggest need. 00:43:15.96\00:43:19.03 And so you can do that online or by phone. 00:43:19.06\00:43:23.73 There are some people that don't want to give 00:43:23.77\00:43:26.07 a regular amount each month, 00:43:26.10\00:43:28.30 or maybe they can't quite afford the boarders' $38, 00:43:28.34\00:43:33.58 and a day students' $25. 00:43:33.61\00:43:36.78 They may not be able to afford that, 00:43:36.81\00:43:39.21 so we have an unsponsored child fund 00:43:39.25\00:43:42.58 because we've always have roughly about 00:43:42.62\00:43:44.52 500 unsponsored children. 00:43:44.55\00:43:47.02 So you can make a donation or a contribution 00:43:47.06\00:43:51.56 to the unsponsored child fund. 00:43:51.59\00:43:53.93 Then once you've started that, 00:43:53.96\00:43:56.46 the monthly contribution 00:43:56.50\00:43:58.00 as I said goes direct to the school, 00:43:58.03\00:44:00.87 and hopefully you'll get letters from the child, 00:44:00.90\00:44:06.41 and you're able to communicate with your child also. 00:44:06.44\00:44:11.68 Our child has been a prolific writer 00:44:11.71\00:44:15.18 through the years. 00:44:15.22\00:44:17.72 When you think about this, the... 00:44:17.75\00:44:20.22 When you give, the benefits of giving 00:44:20.26\00:44:22.36 is that first you're educating a child, 00:44:22.39\00:44:25.26 you are breaking the poverty cycle in their life 00:44:25.29\00:44:29.56 because they have come from 00:44:29.60\00:44:31.63 generation upon generation of poverty. 00:44:31.67\00:44:34.34 Then as the child becomes educated 00:44:34.37\00:44:36.50 and healthier in the process actually, 00:44:36.54\00:44:40.88 then they go back to their village, 00:44:40.91\00:44:43.01 and they have a great contribution to their village. 00:44:43.04\00:44:46.85 And this is something that... 00:44:46.88\00:44:48.75 But at the same time, you're helping to support the church. 00:44:48.78\00:44:51.65 So you impact that child, but not just their life, 00:44:51.69\00:44:58.49 you impact their family's lives, 00:44:58.53\00:45:02.10 not just their parents, 00:45:02.13\00:45:04.53 but then when these children grow up, 00:45:04.57\00:45:06.50 since you've broken the poverty cycle, 00:45:06.53\00:45:10.11 they have a whole, I mean, it's just... 00:45:10.14\00:45:12.47 It's a wonderful organization. 00:45:12.51\00:45:14.98 And the other big differences to that, 00:45:15.01\00:45:17.91 it impacts on the church school. 00:45:17.95\00:45:20.12 If we pulled out of these countries, 00:45:20.15\00:45:22.28 there would be many schools that would close. 00:45:22.32\00:45:24.95 So it's key regular funding. 00:45:24.99\00:45:28.32 Our money goes there monthly to the schools 00:45:28.36\00:45:31.83 because these schools struggle to get paying students. 00:45:31.86\00:45:34.60 Amen. 00:45:34.63\00:45:35.96 So you're having a dramatic impact 00:45:36.00\00:45:38.60 on the funding for Adventist Mission Schools. 00:45:38.63\00:45:42.94 And if you don't want to sponsor a child, 00:45:42.97\00:45:44.51 as you said, you can put it into 00:45:44.54\00:45:45.87 the unsponsored child fund, or help with the slum project, 00:45:45.91\00:45:50.38 or the Child Operation Rescue Project, 00:45:50.41\00:45:53.85 or with the special needs project 00:45:53.88\00:45:55.88 for the blind and the deaf. 00:45:55.92\00:45:57.49 I think it is an amazing thing. 00:45:57.52\00:45:59.25 Now tell us what you're planning? 00:45:59.29\00:46:01.82 Well, first before we talk about the future, 00:46:01.86\00:46:04.23 you have a story you want to share about a child? 00:46:04.26\00:46:06.70 Yeah, well, I love going to the blind school. 00:46:06.73\00:46:10.07 The kids there are just so hungry to learn. 00:46:10.10\00:46:14.24 They have come from very basic backgrounds, 00:46:14.27\00:46:17.81 and they're just hungry to meet people, 00:46:17.84\00:46:21.54 they're hungry to learn. 00:46:21.58\00:46:23.45 And when I arrived 00:46:23.48\00:46:26.48 at the blind school year before last, 00:46:26.51\00:46:29.78 the principal said to me, 00:46:29.82\00:46:31.45 we were just out in the village, 00:46:31.49\00:46:33.82 and someone came and said, 00:46:33.86\00:46:35.72 "There's a girl locked in the house down the street." 00:46:35.76\00:46:39.43 So they went to the house, 00:46:39.46\00:46:41.23 and they discovered a girl had been locked downstairs, 00:46:41.26\00:46:45.40 and she'd been locked there for four years. 00:46:45.43\00:46:47.57 Oh, God. 00:46:47.60\00:46:48.94 She hadn't been out of that room for four years. 00:46:48.97\00:46:52.47 She couldn't talk, she was blind. 00:46:52.51\00:46:55.41 And I arrived at the blind school 00:46:55.44\00:46:58.61 the day after she arrived. 00:46:58.65\00:47:01.02 Now she was in shell, she wasn't talking to anyone, 00:47:01.05\00:47:05.35 she could hardly communicate. 00:47:05.39\00:47:08.52 She ate in a very... 00:47:08.56\00:47:11.16 They always eat with their hands, 00:47:11.19\00:47:12.66 but she was very acting roughly with her... 00:47:12.69\00:47:16.97 Everything she did, she had no coordination, 00:47:17.00\00:47:20.67 and tragically the parents didn't know what to do, 00:47:20.70\00:47:24.34 they were embarrassed so they locked her in the room. 00:47:24.37\00:47:27.91 Now here's the story, I came back one year later, 00:47:27.94\00:47:33.21 12 months later, 00:47:33.25\00:47:34.98 and here is the girl, she's learned basic rhyme, 00:47:35.02\00:47:39.92 she's running and playing with other children, 00:47:39.95\00:47:43.36 and it just broke my heart when she got up and saying, 00:47:43.39\00:47:47.20 Jesus loves me. 00:47:47.23\00:47:48.56 Oh, how precious. 00:47:48.60\00:47:49.93 It was just the most amazing change I have seen in my life. 00:47:49.96\00:47:54.70 Amen. 00:47:54.74\00:47:56.07 And there's another little boy, 00:47:56.10\00:47:57.44 we were doing filming once at the blind school. 00:47:57.47\00:48:00.71 And this is little boy called Sam, totally blind, 00:48:00.74\00:48:04.58 and he's always touching your hand, 00:48:04.61\00:48:08.72 just patting you, and feeling you, 00:48:08.75\00:48:11.52 and he can actually tell a person 00:48:11.55\00:48:14.26 from just touching their finger nails. 00:48:14.29\00:48:16.59 Great. 00:48:16.62\00:48:17.96 And he can touch my hand and say, 00:48:17.99\00:48:20.13 "Oh, Mr. Jim, Mr. Jim." 00:48:20.16\00:48:22.50 And so the impact on their lives 00:48:22.53\00:48:25.93 is just something we can't comprehend. 00:48:25.97\00:48:28.70 And that little girl's name is Wreela, 00:48:28.74\00:48:33.07 W-R-E-E-L-A 00:48:33.11\00:48:35.98 and we need to pray for her 00:48:36.01\00:48:38.11 because she's really having some challenges right now 00:48:38.15\00:48:42.95 in her family with acceptance and rejection, 00:48:42.98\00:48:47.66 but she just loves the Lord, 00:48:47.69\00:48:50.89 and it was amazing to see that change. 00:48:50.93\00:48:54.03 Let's just take a minute and pray right now. 00:48:54.06\00:48:56.13 And then we want to invite you to pray as well. 00:48:56.16\00:48:58.13 Heavenly Father, we come before You 00:48:58.17\00:48:59.80 in the name of Jesus. 00:48:59.83\00:49:01.37 And, Father, we thank You for Child Impact International. 00:49:01.40\00:49:04.54 We thank You, Father, for this blind school. 00:49:04.57\00:49:06.78 We thank You, that Wreela was rescued. 00:49:06.81\00:49:10.25 And, Lord, we thank You that Your hand is upon her. 00:49:10.28\00:49:13.42 And we ask in the name of Jesus, Father, 00:49:13.45\00:49:15.62 that You would make a level path for her feet, 00:49:15.65\00:49:18.62 that You would guide her along Your path of life 00:49:18.65\00:49:22.86 into the future and that, Father, 00:49:22.89\00:49:24.83 whatever challenges she is facing right now 00:49:24.86\00:49:28.10 through her family situation that, 00:49:28.13\00:49:30.63 Lord, You would intervene on her behalf. 00:49:30.67\00:49:34.40 And we thank You, Lord, 00:49:34.44\00:49:35.77 because we know You already have intervened, 00:49:35.80\00:49:39.27 and we thank You that she can... 00:49:39.31\00:49:42.34 We can just trust that You're guiding this child 00:49:42.38\00:49:45.28 by Your Holy Spirit, 00:49:45.31\00:49:47.02 that You are giving her spiritual vision. 00:49:47.05\00:49:50.09 And we thank You in Jesus' name, amen. 00:49:50.12\00:49:52.55 Amen. 00:49:52.59\00:49:53.92 I mean, I just hate sometimes 00:49:53.96\00:49:55.29 so I just want to make sure we pray, 00:49:55.32\00:49:56.66 when we say we're going to pray. 00:49:56.69\00:49:58.03 Yes. 00:49:58.06\00:49:59.39 But what we
