Okay. 00:10:35.46\00:10:37.63 Always mistaken for a Navajo. 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.40 And my Navajo sisters and brothers call me 00:10:40.44\00:10:42.87 Navajo born in the Philippines. 00:10:42.90\00:10:45.14 Navajo born in the Philippines. Yeah. 00:10:45.17\00:10:47.51 I was born and I grew up in a Roman Catholic home. 00:10:47.54\00:10:53.52 My family was baptized when I was in the elementary 00:10:53.55\00:10:57.95 and hearing mission stories from Africa, 00:10:57.99\00:11:01.16 I love the mission stories 00:11:01.19\00:11:03.59 from different parts of the world, 00:11:03.63\00:11:04.96 especially from Africa and it kind of enticed me 00:11:04.99\00:11:08.00 to become a missionary even when I was a little child. 00:11:08.03\00:11:11.03 Then I went to college, I studied the ministry 00:11:11.07\00:11:15.54 and that's where I met my husband, 00:11:15.57\00:11:17.37 and we both served in the mission field 00:11:17.41\00:11:19.24 for 25 years together. 00:11:19.27\00:11:22.04 He was the mission president for 12 years 00:11:22.08\00:11:24.81 before we came here to La Vida 00:11:24.85\00:11:27.48 and I was many departmental directors 00:11:27.52\00:11:31.22 of different ministries in the Philippines like 00:11:31.25\00:11:33.69 woman's ministry, children ministry, 00:11:33.72\00:11:35.62 family ministry, stewardship ministry, 00:11:35.66\00:11:39.43 livelihood, philanthropic... 00:11:39.46\00:11:40.80 So you're very busy little beaver, aren't you? 00:11:40.83\00:11:42.86 She still is. Still is. 00:11:42.90\00:11:44.83 Yeah. 00:11:44.87\00:11:46.77 And I really wanted to go as missionary, 00:11:46.80\00:11:48.87 still I want to go as missionary. 00:11:48.90\00:11:51.41 I wanted to go to Africa but my Filipino friends 00:11:51.44\00:11:55.98 who are missionaries in Africa 00:11:56.01\00:11:57.35 told me that there are lots of snakes in Africa 00:11:57.38\00:11:59.81 and I was so terrified of snakes 00:11:59.85\00:12:01.82 so I said, I'm not going to Africa 00:12:01.85\00:12:04.25 but then I was praying that the Lord will lead us 00:12:04.29\00:12:06.65 to a mission field 00:12:06.69\00:12:08.09 and I was here in the United States sometime, 00:12:08.12\00:12:10.76 few years ago 00:12:10.79\00:12:12.29 and somebody mentioned about La Vida Mission. 00:12:12.33\00:12:14.70 And I said, "Where is that?" They said, "In New Mexico." 00:12:14.73\00:12:18.60 I was in California at that time. 00:12:18.63\00:12:20.34 I said, "So there is a mission field in America?" 00:12:20.37\00:12:24.01 They said, "Yeah, in New Mexico." 00:12:24.04\00:12:26.31 And, you know, it passed on 00:12:26.34\00:12:27.98 and then I went to my foster sister's house in California 00:12:28.01\00:12:32.68 and I was working on her computer 00:12:32.71\00:12:35.65 and on the side of her computer, 00:12:35.68\00:12:38.12 I saw an envelope, donation envelope 00:12:38.15\00:12:40.56 that she has for La Vida Mission. 00:12:40.59\00:12:43.36 She happened to meet La Vida Mission's people 00:12:43.39\00:12:45.59 at the GC when they had their booth, 00:12:45.63\00:12:48.40 and she was a constant supporter of LaVida Mission. 00:12:48.43\00:12:51.83 So I opened her donation envelope 00:12:51.87\00:12:54.24 and I said, "Hmm, La Vida Mission." 00:12:54.27\00:12:57.11 That was the second encounter for La Vida Mission 00:12:57.14\00:13:00.98 and before I left to the Philippines, 00:13:01.01\00:13:02.74 I asked her if I can borrow a book 00:13:02.78\00:13:06.55 to read on the plane, 00:13:06.58\00:13:08.52 so she said, "Oh, go and pick one of the books." 00:13:08.55\00:13:12.55 And I happened to pick the book of Doug Batchelor, 00:13:12.59\00:13:15.42 The Rich Caveman and I was reading it 00:13:15.46\00:13:18.63 you know, while I was in the plane, 00:13:18.66\00:13:20.60 and I read there that Doug Batchelor 00:13:20.63\00:13:24.20 was a missionary in La Vida Mission. 00:13:24.23\00:13:27.04 And it was like the third time La Vida Mission, 00:13:27.07\00:13:29.67 you know, came up in that short one week time. 00:13:29.70\00:13:34.21 I said, "Could God be calling us 00:13:34.24\00:13:36.28 to go to La Vida Mission?" 00:13:36.31\00:13:37.68 When I went back to the Philippines, 00:13:37.71\00:13:39.21 when I reached the Philippines I googled online, 00:13:39.25\00:13:42.18 you know, La Vida Mission and I said, 00:13:42.22\00:13:43.69 "Wow, this is really a mission field." 00:13:43.72\00:13:46.89 This is in the middle of nowhere 00:13:46.92\00:13:49.42 but I kept on reading and out of curiosity, 00:13:49.46\00:13:52.13 you know, I typed in an inquiry. 00:13:52.16\00:13:55.13 I said, "You know, I'm interested 00:13:55.16\00:13:57.33 to go to La Vida Mission and be a missionary 00:13:57.37\00:14:00.50 not thinking, you know, if they will respond or not, 00:14:00.54\00:14:02.50 you know, it's just on their website 00:14:02.54\00:14:05.14 and I told my husband, 00:14:05.17\00:14:06.51 I really want go as a missionary, 00:14:06.54\00:14:09.41 can we go as missionary? 00:14:09.44\00:14:11.81 And you know, he was like, 00:14:11.85\00:14:14.32 "But we're already working here, 00:14:14.35\00:14:15.78 you know, we're working in a mission." 00:14:15.82\00:14:18.89 But then after like two months, 00:14:18.92\00:14:23.36 I got an email from the director 00:14:23.39\00:14:26.59 then of La Vida Mission and said, 00:14:26.63\00:14:29.03 "Well, we are interested in you." 00:14:29.06\00:14:33.07 And he said, "Do you have visa 00:14:33.10\00:14:34.90 to come to the United States and work? 00:14:34.94\00:14:36.71 I said, "Oh, well, I have visitor's visa, 00:14:36.74\00:14:40.18 both of us have visitor's visa and I still have my J1 visa 00:14:40.21\00:14:45.38 but to work we don't have a visa 00:14:45.41\00:14:48.05 and he said, "Well, you can get a religious worker's visa 00:14:48.08\00:14:53.15 and that was February and then it stopped there. 00:14:53.19\00:14:56.83 Oh, no, April. That was April. 00:14:56.86\00:14:59.63 And then I forgot about it and then in July, 00:14:59.66\00:15:03.67 I was in the union office attending 00:15:03.70\00:15:06.20 the Women's Ministry's Director's Council meeting 00:15:06.23\00:15:09.87 and I checked my email. 00:15:09.90\00:15:11.57 Normally I don't check bulk mail or spam, 00:15:11.61\00:15:15.11 I just delete it but that night out of curiosity 00:15:15.14\00:15:18.88 I opened my bulk mail and I saw an email 00:15:18.91\00:15:22.12 from the then president of La Vida Mission and said, 00:15:22.15\00:15:26.39 "We're interested in you, would you like to come?" 00:15:26.42\00:15:29.02 It was like July. 00:15:29.06\00:15:33.09 And so I contacted... 00:15:33.13\00:15:35.13 I said, I seriously got an email from La Vida Mission. 00:15:35.16\00:15:39.67 They didn't know yet what's happening. 00:15:39.70\00:15:42.44 So to make the long story short, 00:15:42.47\00:15:46.98 that was end of July, September we were here. 00:15:47.01\00:15:50.81 Wonderful and you've been at La Vida for... 00:15:50.85\00:15:53.42 For 10 years. Ten years. 00:15:53.45\00:15:55.62 So obviously this was the mission, 00:15:55.65\00:15:58.59 the La Vida means, "The Life" right? 00:15:58.62\00:16:00.19 The Life, yes. 00:16:00.22\00:16:01.56 The Life, so God called you to the mission field 00:16:01.59\00:16:05.23 to minister to the Navajo people. 00:16:05.26\00:16:08.66 We're gonna come back to you in just a moment 00:16:08.70\00:16:10.73 but, Steve, tell us, I know that when Wintley 00:16:10.77\00:16:13.94 was singing a while ago, Pastor Phibbs, you said, 00:16:13.97\00:16:18.07 hey, I was in seminary with him. 00:16:18.11\00:16:19.77 Tell us how God brought you to La Vida? 00:16:19.81\00:16:24.11 My first contact with La Vida 00:16:24.15\00:16:26.88 was when a group was traveling in a little bus 00:16:26.92\00:16:31.55 and coming around singing at churches. 00:16:31.59\00:16:34.26 And some stayed in our home 00:16:34.29\00:16:36.76 that was on the Oregon Coast in Brookings 00:16:36.79\00:16:40.03 and we moved near, 00:16:40.06\00:16:43.13 I was living in Southern Colorado 00:16:43.16\00:16:45.33 and my church, Monte Vista went to a mission trip 00:16:45.37\00:16:49.44 twice to La Vida, 00:16:49.47\00:16:51.31 and we put on a vacation Bible school 00:16:51.34\00:16:53.51 and did some clean-up. 00:16:53.54\00:16:56.41 After that, I was asked to do a week of prayer 00:16:56.44\00:16:59.08 and then they asked me to be on their constituency 00:16:59.11\00:17:02.72 and I saw, "Well, this is fun, 00:17:02.75\00:17:05.39 maybe some day we'd like to be here." 00:17:05.42\00:17:09.16 Retirement came and we thought about 00:17:09.19\00:17:12.19 all the things that would be fun for us to do 00:17:12.23\00:17:17.27 but instead we ended up with La Vida. 00:17:17.30\00:17:21.57 In 2013, they invited me to be the president 00:17:21.60\00:17:25.84 and then later 00:17:25.87\00:17:28.81 after expressing all the reasons why I couldn't, 00:17:28.84\00:17:32.91 I ended up being the director. 00:17:32.95\00:17:35.48 Well, you know, when you said, 00:17:35.52\00:17:36.85 I bet you're having fun now too. 00:17:36.89\00:17:38.32 I'm having fun. Yeah. 00:17:38.35\00:17:39.82 You know, sometimes people will ask us, 00:17:39.85\00:17:42.76 my husband and I if we ever planned to retire 00:17:42.79\00:17:44.99 and the answer is we don't want to think about retirement 00:17:45.03\00:17:48.20 because it's so wonderful to have a life of purpose 00:17:48.23\00:17:50.97 doing something for the Lord. 00:17:51.00\00:17:52.73 Now, what are the conditions like? 00:17:52.77\00:17:54.67 You are in New Mexico on the Navajo reservation 00:17:54.70\00:17:58.71 between Farmington and Crownpoint 00:17:58.74\00:18:00.81 up in the northeastern part of... 00:18:00.84\00:18:03.24 Northwestern. 00:18:03.28\00:18:04.61 I mean northwestern, I'll get my directions right. 00:18:04.65\00:18:08.12 What are the conditions like on the reservation? 00:18:08.15\00:18:12.32 It's a desert. No snakes though, huh? 00:18:12.35\00:18:16.96 Aw, yeah, Dorie, as soon as you... 00:18:16.99\00:18:18.86 I'm from New Mexico, I know. Escape from snake. 00:18:18.89\00:18:23.77 Snakes. Went to the snake. 00:18:23.80\00:18:25.43 Went to the snake. Okay. 00:18:25.47\00:18:27.34 We had a rattlesnake right outside 00:18:27.37\00:18:29.20 the door of the school a couple of years ago 00:18:29.24\00:18:34.94 but he is not with us anymore. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.31 No, okay. 00:18:36.34\00:18:39.45 Are the Navajo people... 00:18:39.48\00:18:42.68 Tell me a little bit about them? 00:18:42.72\00:18:44.05 What are their living conditions like 00:18:44.09\00:18:45.95 and what are their... 00:18:45.99\00:18:51.03 How receptive are they to you? 00:18:51.06\00:18:55.00 The Navajo people are wonderful people. 00:18:55.03\00:18:59.63 They're friendly. 00:18:59.67\00:19:02.07 They have encountered white people 00:19:02.10\00:19:04.47 not always to their advantage 00:19:04.51\00:19:07.18 and so they kind of wonder when they meet, 00:19:07.21\00:19:11.31 you know, is this person trustworthy. 00:19:11.35\00:19:14.28 But spending time allays that concern. 00:19:14.32\00:19:18.12 Surely. 00:19:18.15\00:19:20.79 Their living conditions are not so different 00:19:20.82\00:19:25.33 than many places except that 00:19:25.36\00:19:29.53 those who live in the rural settings 00:19:29.56\00:19:32.47 sometimes go without electricity. 00:19:32.50\00:19:35.54 That's being remedied and until recently 00:19:35.57\00:19:39.84 many did not have water and that's being remedied too 00:19:39.87\00:19:46.08 but that's rather within the last little while, 00:19:46.11\00:19:50.52 couple three years or whatever. 00:19:50.55\00:19:52.55 What is the main religion there? 00:19:52.59\00:19:53.96 Are there many Christians or, Warren, 00:19:53.99\00:19:58.39 since you're shaking your head, 00:19:58.43\00:20:00.10 Warren, I'm gonna ask you what is that? 00:20:00.13\00:20:02.66 You lived there, you grew up on the reservation, 00:20:02.70\00:20:04.90 tell us about it? 00:20:04.93\00:20:08.17 Well, where I grew up it was mostly 00:20:08.20\00:20:11.37 Baptist church on Sunday. 00:20:11.41\00:20:14.24 Okay. 00:20:14.28\00:20:16.38 On my dad's side was tradition, so I had to choose 00:20:16.41\00:20:19.45 which one I would believe in and... 00:20:19.48\00:20:24.29 So when you say tradition, what are the Navajo tradition, 00:20:24.32\00:20:27.69 their spiritual tradition? 00:20:27.72\00:20:30.73 They believe in spiritism 00:20:30.76\00:20:32.23 or they believe in spirits, right? 00:20:32.26\00:20:35.23 Yes, yes. 00:20:35.26\00:20:37.30 I was with my grandma 00:20:37.33\00:20:38.70 for maybe the beginning of like kindergarten 00:20:38.73\00:20:43.24 and my mom took me away from her so, 00:20:43.27\00:20:46.54 I see her now and then 00:20:46.57\00:20:47.91 and she tells me traditionally the stuff, 00:20:47.94\00:20:51.65 so you know, mostly Christian. 00:20:51.68\00:20:55.95 Now, you're mostly... 00:20:55.98\00:20:57.32 Your family is mostly Christian 00:20:57.35\00:20:58.69 but on the reservation in general, 00:20:58.72\00:21:01.52 are there more Christians now 00:21:01.56\00:21:03.96 or would you say it's more people 00:21:03.99\00:21:05.69 who are following the traditional spiritism 00:21:05.73\00:21:09.86 of the Navajo people? 00:21:09.90\00:21:12.63 Say there'll be... 00:21:12.67\00:21:16.47 I see more Christians now than let's say back then. 00:21:16.50\00:21:23.11 All right. 00:21:23.14\00:21:24.48 But now you're the only Adventist 00:21:24.51\00:21:25.85 presence on the reservation, is that correct? 00:21:25.88\00:21:29.05 No. Okay, tell us. 00:21:29.08\00:21:32.12 There are about 13 or 14 Adventist churches, 00:21:32.15\00:21:38.33 congregations, that meet on the rest, 00:21:38.36\00:21:40.36 may be 15... 00:21:40.40\00:21:41.96 Really? 00:21:42.00\00:21:44.53 The Navajo reservation, 00:21:44.57\00:21:46.37 you can say almost centers on the four corners area 00:21:46.40\00:21:50.47 where Utah, Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico come together, 00:21:50.51\00:21:57.05 but that's the end of the Adventist world 00:21:57.08\00:22:00.58 because the Adventist world at that point is divided into 00:22:00.62\00:22:05.62 three union conferences and four local conferences, 00:22:05.65\00:22:10.59 but there are a number of congregations 00:22:10.63\00:22:13.53 that minister to the Navajo Nation. 00:22:13.56\00:22:15.70 Wonderful. 00:22:15.73\00:22:17.07 Now, are you the only Christian school? 00:22:17.10\00:22:20.67 There are other several Christian schools. 00:22:20.70\00:22:23.30 We have other Adventist schools on the reservation 00:22:23.34\00:22:25.97 like in Waterflow... 00:22:26.01\00:22:27.34 In the New Mexico side. 00:22:27.38\00:22:28.71 In New Mexico area and even in the Arizona area. 00:22:28.74\00:22:31.61 Wonderful. 00:22:31.65\00:22:32.98 But in the part of the New Mexico reservation 00:22:33.01\00:22:37.22 between Crownpoint and Farmington, 00:22:37.25\00:22:39.22 it's just La Vida Mission. 00:22:39.25\00:22:40.79 Okay. 00:22:40.82\00:22:42.16 Tell me, you were founded nearly 60 years ago, how... 00:22:42.19\00:22:47.70 You actually brought a little video 00:22:47.73\00:22:49.30 that they put together 00:22:49.33\00:22:50.77 and would you like to start with that 00:22:50.80\00:22:52.20 so people can see who your founder was 00:22:52.23\00:22:54.47 and what the vision is. 00:22:54.50\00:22:55.84 So we're going to show you a video 00:22:55.87\00:22:58.17 that La Vida Mission has put together. 00:22:58.21\00:23:04.65 La Vida Mission is a mission field 00:23:04.68\00:23:07.02 in your backyard. 00:23:07.05\00:23:10.09 In the last days, God says, 00:23:10.12\00:23:11.79 "I will pour out my Spirit on all people. 00:23:11.82\00:23:14.89 Your sons and daughters will prophesy, 00:23:14.92\00:23:16.83 your young men will see visions, 00:23:16.86\00:23:18.99 your old men will dream dreams." 00:23:19.03\00:23:21.56 I will pour out my Spirit on both men and women. 00:23:21.60\00:23:26.03 La Vida Mission all started with a dream. 00:23:26.07\00:23:29.20 The dreamer was called by God. 00:23:29.24\00:23:31.31 Her name was Lilikai Julian Neil, 00:23:31.34\00:23:34.11 born near Crownpoint, New Mexico in 1900. 00:23:34.14\00:23:38.11 She studied with Orno and Agnes Follet. 00:23:38.15\00:23:40.92 They were the first Adventist missionaries to the Navajo. 00:23:40.95\00:23:44.95 And in 1917, she was baptized 00:23:44.99\00:23:48.36 the first Navajo Seventh-day Adventist. 00:23:48.39\00:23:52.06 Lilikai, who also became the first woman 00:23:52.09\00:23:54.70 to set on the Navajo Travel Council 00:23:54.73\00:23:56.70 had a dream. 00:23:56.73\00:23:58.77 In her dream, she saw a big circle of light 00:23:58.80\00:24:01.90 with Jesus standing in the center 00:24:01.94\00:24:04.34 clothed in shining garments. 00:24:04.37\00:24:06.84 As she listened to him in adoration, 00:24:06.88\00:24:08.81 he turned and looked at her and smiled. 00:24:08.84\00:24:11.41 Then she heard footsteps, many, many moccasin footsteps. 00:24:11.45\00:24:15.98 They were marching endlessly in the darkness, 00:24:16.02\00:24:18.82 just outside the circle of light. 00:24:18.85\00:24:22.22 Then the scene gradually changed. 00:24:22.26\00:24:24.66 Soon she saw more moccasin's feet 00:24:24.69\00:24:27.66 but this time they were young dancing feet. 00:24:27.70\00:24:31.53 Many of these smaller feet paused to turn. 00:24:31.57\00:24:35.10 Then they walked into the circle of light 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.91 where they were gladly welcomed by the smiling Savior. 00:24:36.94\00:24:40.88 Lili heard a command from Jesus, 00:24:40.91\00:24:42.71 "Teach the children." 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.08 She understood that the vision 00:24:45.11\00:24:46.65 depicted the young people and children of her tribe 00:24:46.68\00:24:50.15 as the hope of the Navajo Nation, 00:24:50.19\00:24:52.72 that many of them would turn for the old ways 00:24:52.75\00:24:56.32 into the light and happiness 00:24:56.36\00:24:58.56 surrounding the Jesus she loved. 00:24:58.59\00:25:01.16 The command she heard 00:25:01.20\00:25:02.76 was repetition of the Gospel Commission: 00:25:02.80\00:25:05.83 Go therefore, teach all nations... 00:25:05.87\00:25:08.84 Teaching them to observe all things 00:25:08.87\00:25:10.84 whatsoever I have commanded you, 00:25:10.87\00:25:13.41 baptize them in the name of the Father, 00:25:13.44\00:25:16.24 and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. 00:25:16.28\00:25:19.68 From that time on all Lili's energies 00:25:19.71\00:25:22.58 were dedicated to this call. 00:25:22.62\00:25:25.05 Due to a terrible car accident 00:25:25.09\00:25:26.89 that permanently impaired her health, 00:25:26.92\00:25:29.56 Lili didn't live up to see her dream come true 00:25:29.59\00:25:32.93 but she did see the birth of La Vida Mission. 00:25:32.96\00:25:36.20 The mission was founded in 1960 and it has grown since. 00:25:36.23\00:25:41.67 It's been almost 60 years but the mission is still alive. 00:25:41.70\00:25:45.57 It's alive and continually sharing the love 00:25:45.61\00:25:48.34 and the gospel of Jesus to the Navajo people 00:25:48.38\00:25:52.08 through our school, our church, our planning, 00:25:52.11\00:25:55.65 and the numerous community service 00:25:55.68\00:25:57.52 and outreach programs. 00:25:57.55\00:26:00.39 Our school's motto is Education for Life, 00:26:00.42\00:26:03.99 Education for Eternity. 00:26:04.03\00:26:06.80 We strive to raise and maintain 00:26:06.83\00:26:08.76 a high standard for academic classes, 00:26:08.80\00:26:11.90 first grade through high school. 00:26:11.93\00:26:14.60 This is Audi. 00:26:14.64\00:26:16.50 Last year she was placed in another school 00:26:16.54\00:26:18.84 for a quarter. 00:26:18.87\00:26:20.38 Here's how she explained it, 00:26:20.41\00:26:22.34 "At the other school there is no Jesus over there." 00:26:22.38\00:26:26.98 Oh. What a poignant comment. 00:26:27.02\00:26:29.85 So she actually had been in your school 00:26:29.88\00:26:32.95 then went to another school with her sister... 00:26:32.99\00:26:34.89 She started there as a preschooler 00:26:34.92\00:26:37.63 and then she has been attending there 00:26:37.66\00:26:39.96 and then her older sister wanted to try another school 00:26:40.00\00:26:43.16 and so she has to go with her sister 00:26:43.20\00:26:45.73 but she did not enjoy it there. 00:26:45.77\00:26:48.04 Said, "They don't sing for my birthday." 00:26:48.07\00:26:50.54 Yeah, and she said, "There was no Jesus" 00:26:50.57\00:26:52.17 so she came back. And there is no Jesus there. 00:26:52.21\00:26:54.88 So they both came back with the quarter? 00:26:54.91\00:26:56.64 They both came back after quarter. 00:26:56.68\00:26:58.61 So, praise the Lord for Lilicai and for what she has started 00:26:58.65\00:27:03.39 but I love your motto: 00:27:03.42\00:27:07.82 Education for Life, Education for Eternity. 00:27:07.86\00:27:11.26 Tell us how you educate for life 00:27:11.29\00:27:13.96 other than the scholastic education. 00:27:14.00\00:27:16.70 You teach essential living skills 00:27:16.73\00:27:19.70 and tell us about 00:27:19.73\00:27:21.44 the essential living skills programs you do? 00:27:21.47\00:27:25.34 The essential living skills, we teach our practical things 00:27:25.37\00:27:30.38 that are useful to people 00:27:30.41\00:27:34.02 particularly people who have a rural life. 00:27:34.05\00:27:37.02 We teach auto mechanics even for girls. 00:27:37.05\00:27:40.06 Wonderful. 00:27:40.09\00:27:42.09 My wife and I wouldn't let our daughters 00:27:42.12\00:27:45.93 get their driver's license 00:27:45.96\00:27:47.33 until they could change her flatten and change the oil. 00:27:47.36\00:27:50.97 Good for you. 00:27:51.00\00:27:52.33 And we felt like that 00:27:52.37\00:27:54.47 these girls could profit from that too. 00:27:54.50\00:27:57.27 So we've taught what we call 00:27:57.31\00:27:59.17 powder puff mechanics just for girls. 00:27:59.21\00:28:03.21 We found that the boys were threatened 00:28:03.24\00:28:05.01 to have girls in their class. 00:28:05.05\00:28:06.38 "What are they doing here in our domain?" 00:28:06.41\00:28:09.52 But they have each, the boys are also learning 00:28:09.55\00:28:13.19 mechanic skills and welding. 00:28:13.22\00:28:15.59 Boys and girls both have learned to weld. 00:28:15.62\00:28:18.99 Warren, you've done some pretty nice projects 00:28:19.03\00:28:21.93 and the others in welding, 00:28:21.96\00:28:24.77 and we teach baking and cooking to the kids. 00:28:24.80\00:28:29.90 Now, do you have the boys teach them any of that? 00:28:29.94\00:28:34.41 No. No. 00:28:34.44\00:28:35.78 Well, the boys are there but it's not segregated. 00:28:35.81\00:28:40.15 Those areas that the boys think of their domain, 00:28:40.18\00:28:43.39 the teachers segregate. 00:28:43.42\00:28:45.49 Okay. 00:28:45.52\00:28:47.42 And is there any agricultural training or... 00:28:47.46\00:28:49.76 Yes. Yes. 00:28:49.79\00:28:51.13 Okay, all right. 00:28:51.16\00:28:54.13 But that's the education for life 00:28:54.16\00:28:58.40 but you said education for eternity. 00:28:58.43\00:29:00.84 So tell us about your spiritual development, 00:29:00.87\00:29:03.41 what are you doing to help the children? 00:29:03.44\00:29:06.34 Actually La Vida Mission's first mission field 00:29:06.37\00:29:08.61 is our student population. 00:29:08.64\00:29:11.08 So I was a dorm parent for five years 00:29:11.11\00:29:14.02 and I enjoyed it. 00:29:14.05\00:29:15.38 You know, leading these children 00:29:15.42\00:29:16.75 to the knowledge of Jesus. 00:29:16.79\00:29:18.79 So in the dorm when they wake up, 00:29:18.82\00:29:22.76 we teach them how to pray 00:29:22.79\00:29:25.29 and then we have morning worship, 00:29:25.33\00:29:27.00 family worship, and then they go to school. 00:29:27.03\00:29:30.03 They have worship in the classroom. 00:29:30.07\00:29:33.47 In the evening we have evening family worship again, 00:29:33.50\00:29:36.97 and then we have wakeup prayer. 00:29:37.01\00:29:39.07 We have weekend schools 00:29:39.11\00:29:41.78 where the kids stay there for two weeks 00:29:41.81\00:29:44.38 so they can attend church on Sabbath 00:29:44.41\00:29:46.82 and join us for worship. 00:29:46.85\00:29:48.92 And let me stop you right there. 00:29:48.95\00:29:50.29 Are most of your children boarding students? 00:29:50.32\00:29:53.86 Mostly. About maybe 90%. There are... 00:29:53.89\00:29:56.89 Okay, so typically though, as a boarding student 00:29:56.93\00:29:59.69 then they would go home on the weekends 00:29:59.73\00:30:01.30 to be with their family. 00:30:01.33\00:30:02.80 But then you have weekend school 00:30:02.83\00:30:04.23 so that they can come and go. 00:30:04.27\00:30:05.60 Normally they go home after lunch on Friday 00:30:05.63\00:30:09.67 but when there is a weekend school, 00:30:09.70\00:30:11.04 they stay there for two weeks 00:30:11.07\00:30:12.84 and they go home the next week on Thursday 00:30:12.87\00:30:15.68 instead to give the dorm parents 00:30:15.71\00:30:18.25 and the teachers some longer break 00:30:18.28\00:30:20.08 and the kids also. 00:30:20.12\00:30:22.28 But we also have a week of prayer, pathfinders, 00:30:22.32\00:30:25.42 you know, things that are really new to these kids 00:30:25.45\00:30:28.72 because most of our kids 00:30:28.76\00:30:30.39 when they come to La Vida Mission, 00:30:30.43\00:30:31.83 they're not Seventh-day Adventists, 00:30:31.86\00:30:33.90 they're not from Seventh-day Adventist homes 00:30:33.93\00:30:36.03 but they're Christians 00:30:36.06\00:30:37.47 and some of them are traditionals. 00:30:37.50\00:30:38.93 Okay. 00:30:38.97\00:30:40.30 Now, Warren, I understand that the reason 00:30:40.34\00:30:42.77 they brought you as a student, 00:30:42.80\00:30:45.14 you're a student at La Vida Mission, 00:30:45.17\00:30:47.41 and I hear you're a model student 00:30:47.44\00:30:49.58 but tell us how long you've been at La Vida 00:30:49.61\00:30:53.42 and how did you end up at La Vida? 00:30:53.45\00:30:55.85 I've been at La Vida for six years now. 00:30:58.15\00:31:00.52 All right. And... 00:31:00.56\00:31:03.39 Are you a senior in high school? 00:31:03.43\00:31:04.99 Yeah. Yes. 00:31:05.03\00:31:06.36 Eleventh grade. 00:31:06.39\00:31:08.10 And I had my cousin tell me about school 00:31:08.13\00:31:13.03 'cause I wanted to feel like a boarding school 00:31:13.07\00:31:16.81 how it was and test it out 00:31:16.84\00:31:19.27 before I go to regular school, you know... 00:31:19.31\00:31:23.18 To college? Yeah. 00:31:23.21\00:31:26.08 And so far I like it. I'm still here, I love it here. 00:31:26.11\00:31:30.22 I brought my brother and my sisters to the school. 00:31:30.25\00:31:34.62 And another cousin. Yeah. 00:31:34.66\00:31:36.39 Now your mother was a Baptist, 00:31:36.42\00:31:38.23 your father is a traditionalist. 00:31:38.26\00:31:40.76 He follows the traditional Navajo religious beliefs. 00:31:40.80\00:31:45.03 Have you or your brothers and sisters 00:31:45.07\00:31:47.14 who are attending been baptized 00:31:47.17\00:31:49.30 as a Seventh-day Adventist Christian? 00:31:49.34\00:31:51.51 Yes. All of them actually. 00:31:51.54\00:31:53.51 All of you. Wonderful. Wonderful. 00:31:53.54\00:31:56.44 Well, what has been your favorite part 00:31:56.48\00:32:00.82 of your curriculum there? 00:32:00.85\00:32:03.28 The training that you're getting? 00:32:03.32\00:32:05.39 The welding. Welding? 00:32:05.42\00:32:07.46 I love welding. Okay. 00:32:07.49\00:32:09.12 Do you have any idea of what you want to do as... 00:32:09.16\00:32:12.59 Are you still planning on going to college 00:32:12.63\00:32:14.36 or do you want to do that or become a welder? 00:32:14.40\00:32:17.57 I want to do underwater welding. 00:32:17.60\00:32:19.40 That's my dream. 00:32:19.43\00:32:21.50 Amen. Amen. 00:32:21.54\00:32:24.37 That's a high paying job. 00:32:24.41\00:32:26.04 Good ambition. Yeah. 00:32:29.51\00:32:31.61 Now, tell us how you fulfill the mission beyond the school? 00:32:31.65\00:32:37.32 I noticed in your clip that you had a clinic, 00:32:37.35\00:32:41.52 you have a church, what kind of, I mean, 00:32:41.56\00:32:46.66 what is your community outreach? 00:32:46.70\00:32:48.56 For community outreach, we have numerous of them. 00:32:51.17\00:32:53.70 Okay. 00:32:53.74\00:32:55.40 First, the church serves us a place 00:32:55.44\00:32:57.51 where people come to the funeral, 00:32:57.54\00:33:00.34 sometimes wedding, but mostly funeral. 00:33:00.38\00:33:03.08 You know, when there is a funeral 00:33:03.11\00:33:04.48 they need a bigger church, so they come to our church. 00:33:04.51\00:33:07.98 And then in the mission, within the mission, 00:33:08.02\00:33:11.85 we have what we call 00:33:11.89\00:33:13.22 as the monthly community service day 00:33:13.25\00:33:16.02 where people come 00:33:16.06\00:33:17.69 and they go through our thrift store or hogan 00:33:17.73\00:33:23.47 and they get the clothes that they need 00:33:23.50\00:33:26.37 and we also give them... 00:33:26.40\00:33:30.01 We serve them a food pantry in cooperation with partnership 00:33:30.04\00:33:33.68 with native Americans in Arizona, in Phoenix, 00:33:33.71\00:33:36.91 so they go there every last Sunday of the month. 00:33:36.95\00:33:40.98 We used to have it every Sunday and Wednesday the door, 00:33:41.02\00:33:44.92 of course, that's open. 00:33:44.95\00:33:47.02 But now we are just doing it once a month 00:33:47.06\00:33:49.26 and we also reach out 00:33:49.29\00:33:53.13 to the community doing visitation, 00:33:53.16\00:33:58.60 friendship evangelism. 00:33:58.63\00:34:00.10 We have found out that, 00:34:00.14\00:34:01.74 you know, working with our native brothers and sisters, 00:34:01.77\00:34:06.88 the method of Jesus is the most effective 00:34:06.91\00:34:11.58 because there are two things that are important 00:34:11.61\00:34:14.08 when you work with the native population, 00:34:14.12\00:34:16.55 time and trust. 00:34:16.58\00:34:19.15 The longer you stay there, 00:34:19.19\00:34:21.72 the better you can get their trust. 00:34:21.76\00:34:24.13 And it takes time to get their trust. 00:34:24.16\00:34:27.20 So if you stay there longer, you get their trust. 00:34:27.23\00:34:31.13 They feel that you really care for them, 00:34:31.17\00:34:33.97 so in our outreach, you know, we go to graduation, 00:34:34.00\00:34:40.61 we go to funeral family meeting. 00:34:40.64\00:34:43.65 They have family meeting 00:34:43.68\00:34:45.01 when somebody died in the community. 00:34:45.05\00:34:47.22 They gather all the people in the community 00:34:47.25\00:34:49.55 and they present how much the expenses is 00:34:49.58\00:34:53.62 and everybody pitch in. 00:34:53.66\00:34:55.59 And my husband and I found out 00:34:55.62\00:34:57.26 that that's one of the best way to minister to people. 00:34:57.29\00:35:00.50 We go there, you know, we bring some food to share 00:35:00.53\00:35:04.13 and sometimes I sing and share to them, 00:35:04.17\00:35:08.77 you know, the promise of Jesus, 00:35:08.80\00:35:10.34 the comfort that they need so... 00:35:10.37\00:35:13.48 In fact, Dorie, you've got several of us into singing. 00:35:13.51\00:35:19.11 We had a whole group of staff 00:35:19.15\00:35:21.38 that sang in Navajo at a funeral. 00:35:21.42\00:35:24.69 Wonderful. Wonderful Yeah. 00:35:24.72\00:35:26.96 And like there was once somebody died. 00:35:26.99\00:35:31.63 She attends our Bible study and she has not been attending 00:35:31.66\00:35:37.43 our Bible study for three days already 00:35:37.47\00:35:41.97 so we were wondering, 00:35:42.00\00:35:43.34 and my husband and I were planning to visit her 00:35:43.37\00:35:45.37 but we ran out of time so we said, 00:35:45.41\00:35:46.98 oh, we'll just visit her before Sabbath 00:35:47.01\00:35:49.64 but then Thursday, I guess, 00:35:49.68\00:35:51.45 I received a text from another lady and said, 00:35:51.48\00:35:54.15 "Do you know that sister so-and-so, you know, 00:35:54.18\00:35:57.85 was found dead in her house." 00:35:57.89\00:36:00.29 And there was no, you know, she has no immediate family. 00:36:00.32\00:36:04.46 No husband, no mother, no father, no siblings. 00:36:04.49\00:36:08.76 And so we went 00:36:08.80\00:36:11.43 and she was already at the funeral house. 00:36:11.47\00:36:14.50 Later we found out that she has some cousins 00:36:14.54\00:36:17.41 who wanted to give her a decent funeral and they said, 00:36:17.44\00:36:21.14 "We don't know even if she is attending church," 00:36:21.18\00:36:23.28 and they said oh. 00:36:23.31\00:36:24.65 Somebody said, "Oh, she is attending 00:36:24.68\00:36:26.08 the Seventh-day Adventist group." 00:36:26.11\00:36:27.78 So can we ask their help? So they asked our help. 00:36:27.82\00:36:30.65 My husband did the funeral. 00:36:30.69\00:36:32.89 Pastor Steve went with us 00:36:32.92\00:36:34.26 and the little church in Crownpoint 00:36:34.29\00:36:36.66 and we served them, you know, and also the reception 00:36:36.69\00:36:41.96 and after the service, people were saying, 00:36:42.00\00:36:45.63 "Oh, thank you. 00:36:45.67\00:36:47.00 This is the first time that we have seen 00:36:47.04\00:36:48.37 this kind of ministry from a church group." 00:36:48.40\00:36:51.44 And one of the best comment that we heard, you know, 00:36:51.47\00:36:54.58 that was told to the leader of the congregation was like, 00:36:54.61\00:36:58.48 "Oh, I was so happy to see all of you serving 00:36:58.51\00:37:02.88 with all your smiles. 00:37:02.92\00:37:04.25 You mean business. 00:37:04.29\00:37:05.62 But in all your faces we see Jesus." 00:37:05.65\00:37:09.06 And that made me... 00:37:09.09\00:37:10.43 That really made me cry. Amen. 00:37:10.46\00:37:13.13 And I thank God for that soul. 00:37:13.16\00:37:15.10 Amen. 00:37:15.13\00:37:16.46 I need to jump in, Dorie, 00:37:16.50\00:37:19.23 on what you're saying about Crownpoint. 00:37:19.27\00:37:23.04 La Vida Mission was established in 1960 00:37:23.07\00:37:27.34 but initially there was a church at the mission, 00:37:27.38\00:37:31.91 then La Vida had a part 00:37:31.95\00:37:34.92 in the starting of the Waterflow Church 00:37:34.95\00:37:37.49 between Farmington and Shiprock but more recently, 00:37:37.52\00:37:42.69 Dorie and her husband Polly have started 00:37:42.72\00:37:46.90 a congregation in Crownpoint which is south of us. 00:37:46.93\00:37:51.20 It's actually, we're eight miles 00:37:51.23\00:37:54.34 from the border between the southwestern 00:37:54.37\00:37:58.04 and the mid-America union 00:37:58.07\00:37:59.47 and Rocky Mountain and Texico Conference, 00:37:59.51\00:38:03.24 so we're now operating in two conferences. 00:38:03.28\00:38:06.78 And the Texico Conference has taken an interest 00:38:06.82\00:38:10.69 in our work and... 00:38:10.72\00:38:13.52 Well, when you first started, you were in a trailer 00:38:13.56\00:38:17.23 that had been donated by a lady, a 12x60 00:38:17.26\00:38:23.97 and, you know, a 12x60 is not that big 00:38:24.00\00:38:29.04 and you get the back half of it in small rooms, 00:38:29.07\00:38:32.54 bathroom and bedrooms and I've been there 00:38:32.57\00:38:35.98 when there were almost 40 people. 00:38:36.01\00:38:38.45 We were elbow to elbow in the trailer 00:38:38.48\00:38:44.09 and quite crowded and we didn't just sit there 00:38:44.12\00:38:47.46 and have church. 00:38:47.49\00:38:49.36 When church is over, Dorie brings out the food 00:38:49.39\00:38:52.99 and everybody eats and I was amazed 00:38:53.03\00:38:57.63 and then my first time there after they had eaten, 00:38:57.67\00:39:03.24 then they threw that plate away 00:39:03.27\00:39:05.07 and I looked and I said, what's happening 00:39:05.11\00:39:07.54 and they got a new plate and they loaded it again 00:39:07.58\00:39:11.55 and covered it with foil and Dorie sent them food home. 00:39:11.58\00:39:16.02 Oh, wonderful. Wonderful. 00:39:16.05\00:39:17.65 So you, it sounds like 00:39:17.69\00:39:19.39 when the Lord brought Dorie to La Vida 00:39:19.42\00:39:22.19 that was exactly the missionary feel 00:39:22.22\00:39:24.16 that he needed... 00:39:24.19\00:39:25.53 Here he wanted you. 00:39:25.56\00:39:28.00 I'm interested how do you interest 00:39:28.03\00:39:31.43 the people in Bible studies? 00:39:31.47\00:39:33.13 How do you get them to church? 00:39:33.17\00:39:34.94 How do you get the children to enroll in school? 00:39:34.97\00:39:41.14 Is it just this friendship evangelism that you find 00:39:41.18\00:39:44.11 and people will start studying with you 00:39:44.15\00:39:46.48 or come to church 00:39:46.51\00:39:47.85 or send their children to the school? 00:39:47.88\00:39:49.65 Yeah. 00:39:49.68\00:39:51.02 It's basically friendship evangelism 00:39:51.05\00:39:53.39 and people who have been attending our meeting, 00:39:53.42\00:39:55.62 they will tell other people. 00:39:55.66\00:39:57.19 Okay. And just the method of Jesus. 00:39:57.23\00:40:01.20 And I was talking to one lady 00:40:01.23\00:40:03.03 who was just baptized in Crownpoint 00:40:03.06\00:40:05.93 and she was eating and said, "Come, sit by me." 00:40:05.97\00:40:10.04 So I was sitting and she said, "Do you know that 00:40:10.07\00:40:12.41 I had been going to different churches. 00:40:12.44\00:40:16.18 Your church is the nicest 00:40:16.21\00:40:18.51 and when you were still at the trailer, 00:40:18.55\00:40:21.68 she said somebody told me you need to go there, 00:40:21.72\00:40:25.55 you will meet Dorie and other members 00:40:25.59\00:40:30.39 of the La Vida Mission Outreach they're nice and friendly. 00:40:30.43\00:40:34.06 So I went there and I met you and the rest 00:40:34.10\00:40:36.77 and you're really friendly and I got stuck here." 00:40:36.80\00:40:40.07 That's what she said. Praise God. Praise God. 00:40:40.10\00:40:42.44 And she got baptized and she really enjoyed it. 00:40:42.47\00:40:45.11 Tell them the difference between 00:40:45.14\00:40:47.11 when we were in the trailer and now? 00:40:47.14\00:40:49.91 Oh, yeah, now we have a bigger church building 00:40:49.94\00:40:53.01 because Texico Conference is renting their building. 00:40:53.05\00:40:56.18 It has open, the building just opened, 00:40:56.22\00:40:58.95 it was being rented by a medical supply company 00:40:58.99\00:41:03.09 for 20 years, 00:41:03.12\00:41:04.96 then they gave it up and then we were able to get it 00:41:04.99\00:41:07.93 and Texico Conference now is in full support of us 00:41:07.96\00:41:12.33 and they did not only refurbish and furnish the building, 00:41:12.37\00:41:17.31 they're paying for its monthly rent 00:41:17.34\00:41:19.04 for our ministry in Crownpoint. 00:41:19.07\00:41:20.64 Praise God. Praise God. 00:41:20.68\00:41:23.75 They still miss the trailer. 00:41:23.78\00:41:25.71 The people were telling me 00:41:25.75\00:41:27.22 when are you going back to the trailer? 00:41:27.25\00:41:29.48 Because the "home church" 00:41:29.52\00:41:31.25 is very attractive to the native. 00:41:31.29\00:41:33.96 You know, small group where we close commune, 00:41:33.99\00:41:36.76 that's very attractive to them. 00:41:36.79\00:41:38.43 Well, you are doing something right 00:41:38.46\00:41:39.79 if you had 40 people, you know, you're starting up 00:41:39.83\00:41:43.33 and you have 40 people in a hot smog trailer church. 00:41:43.37\00:41:45.13 Actually pastors did, 00:41:45.17\00:41:46.50 it did not start in the trailer. 00:41:46.53\00:41:48.40 It started in the living room 00:41:48.44\00:41:49.90 of one of the only Adventist in the town. 00:41:49.94\00:41:55.71 It was a small living room and then we grew bigger 00:41:55.74\00:41:59.08 and we so we prayed that the Lord will give us 00:41:59.11\00:42:01.28 something even we came yet 00:42:01.32\00:42:03.59 and somebody donated the trailer. 00:42:03.62\00:42:05.65 She is a friend of one of the pioneers 00:42:05.69\00:42:10.59 of La Vida Mission, Aunt Mary. 00:42:10.63\00:42:13.86 So, Steve, what are the plans for the future of La Vida? 00:42:13.90\00:42:17.57 I mean, obviously the Lord has kept you rolling 00:42:17.60\00:42:19.83 for 60 years nearly. 00:42:19.87\00:42:22.97 What do you envision for the future of La Vida? 00:42:23.00\00:42:27.88 For the future we're excited because we're getting 00:42:27.91\00:42:33.01 a medical missionary to come 00:42:33.05\00:42:35.65 which happens to be Dorie and Polly's son. 00:42:35.68\00:42:39.32 And he is landing tonight at Albuquerque 00:42:39.35\00:42:44.46 and going to be picked up. 00:42:44.49\00:42:46.19 We petitioned his immigration 00:42:46.23\00:42:49.00 as a religious worker and the clinic, 00:42:49.03\00:42:53.10 which was once a very crucial 00:42:53.13\00:42:57.44 first place of help for people 00:42:57.47\00:43:01.61 because when the mission started 00:43:01.64\00:43:03.31 the road to Farmington was a dirt road, 00:43:03.35\00:43:06.28 kind of a two-track road, you know, 00:43:06.31\00:43:08.92 where the two wheels had run 00:43:08.95\00:43:10.92 and there were no bridges over the wash, 00:43:10.95\00:43:13.49 and there are cars and busses 00:43:13.52\00:43:15.36 even that have sunk into the sand of the wash, 00:43:15.39\00:43:19.86 which is a river with no water except when it rains 00:43:19.89\00:43:24.50 and so as transportation has improved, 00:43:24.53\00:43:28.90 once we had doctors and dentists and optometrists 00:43:28.94\00:43:33.31 who flew in, we have a landing strip on the mission 00:43:33.34\00:43:37.28 and they flew in and held clinics. 00:43:37.31\00:43:39.91 Now with Indian Health Service providing much better care 00:43:39.95\00:43:44.42 and we've got excellent highways, 00:43:44.45\00:43:47.72 that phase of the clinic's usefulness has diminished 00:43:47.76\00:43:52.06 but we're wanting to make the clinic 00:43:52.09\00:43:54.63 a place of wellness training. 00:43:54.66\00:43:58.57 Oh, wonderful. 00:43:58.60\00:43:59.93 Which is prevention 00:43:59.97\00:44:01.30 and promoting a healthy lifestyle. 00:44:01.34\00:44:03.51 And healthy lifestyle and Weldon Joseph, 00:44:03.54\00:44:07.41 their son is coming and will be leading out 00:44:07.44\00:44:11.21 and that along with being a part of the rest 00:44:11.25\00:44:14.12 of the outreach team. 00:44:14.15\00:44:15.98 Now do you ever have... 00:44:16.02\00:44:18.75 I don't know what to call it, but just like 00:44:18.79\00:44:20.79 if somebody wanted to go, do a missionary trip, 00:44:20.82\00:44:23.49 just a little short term missionary trip 00:44:23.53\00:44:25.53 do you have people... 00:44:25.56\00:44:27.06 All the time. All the time. 00:44:27.10\00:44:28.96 We have that invitation out continuously. 00:44:29.00\00:44:32.87 Southern University out of Collegedale 00:44:32.90\00:44:36.81 has been for every spring. 00:44:36.84\00:44:39.17 Some of the kids come 00:44:39.21\00:44:40.54 and spend their spring break with us 00:44:40.58\00:44:42.74 for several years now. 00:44:42.78\00:44:44.78 I had a lady call up a few months ago and she says, 00:44:44.81\00:44:49.32 "I would like to go on a mission trip 00:44:49.35\00:44:51.09 but I'm not with the group. 00:44:51.12\00:44:52.45 Could you use one person?" 00:44:52.49\00:44:54.26 We said, "Sure." 00:44:54.29\00:44:56.49 So she flew to Albuquerque 00:44:56.52\00:44:58.23 and my wife and I went and picked her up 00:44:58.26\00:45:01.06 and she was there for a week and went home delighted. 00:45:01.10\00:45:04.53 We have groups from Canada, from British Columbia, Canada, 00:45:04.57\00:45:10.77 from Washington, from California, 00:45:10.81\00:45:14.94 from all over the country, actually Florida also. 00:45:14.98\00:45:20.18 So we're drawing from all these areas. 00:45:20.22\00:45:23.12 Wonderful. 00:45:23.15\00:45:24.49 So we had a video 00:45:24.52\00:45:25.92 that we're not going to be able to show 00:45:25.95\00:45:27.52 but I wanted you to tell the story about, 00:45:27.56\00:45:30.26 and I don't care who tells it 00:45:30.29\00:45:32.23 but tell us the story about Cody and Tisha 00:45:32.26\00:45:37.37 and their role that La Vida has made in their life? 00:45:37.40\00:45:42.80 Cody is my Navajo son 00:45:42.84\00:45:45.17 because when he first came to La Vida Mission, 00:45:45.21\00:45:47.38 he lived in our dorm and he told us later 00:45:47.41\00:45:53.15 when he was no longer a student, 00:45:53.18\00:45:55.02 when he was sent to La Vida, he was sent 00:45:55.05\00:45:57.42 because he was in trouble in another school, 00:45:57.45\00:45:59.95 so he was having a rough time but then he stayed with us 00:45:59.99\00:46:04.79 and one thing that really attracted him 00:46:04.83\00:46:08.43 to the dorm always when we're having dorm is about heaven. 00:46:08.46\00:46:12.13 So he would always tell me and my husband, 00:46:12.17\00:46:14.67 "Can we have worship now and talk about heaven?" 00:46:14.70\00:46:18.61 And that kind of enticed him to know Jesus 00:46:18.64\00:46:23.08 and he was baptized 00:46:23.11\00:46:25.61 into the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:46:25.65\00:46:27.18 and last May we attended 00:46:27.22\00:46:31.35 his graduation reception from high school 00:46:31.39\00:46:34.79 and he gave this little speech and he said, 00:46:34.82\00:46:36.93 "I'm so thankful for La Vida Mission 00:46:36.96\00:46:38.89 because it has done so much in my life, 00:46:38.93\00:46:41.56 it has impacted my life. 00:46:41.60\00:46:43.53 I was in a difficult situation 00:46:43.57\00:46:45.80 but then when they came to La Vida, 00:46:45.83\00:46:48.50 things has changed 00:46:48.54\00:46:49.90 and I will forever be grateful to God. 00:46:49.94\00:46:52.74 Praise God. That's so good. 00:46:52.77\00:46:55.24 His niece now is in La Vida, he is just a sweetheart. 00:46:55.28\00:46:59.38 He loves in there. 00:46:59.41\00:47:00.75 Wonderful. Now what about Kyle? 00:47:00.78\00:47:03.15 You wanted to tell Kyle's story. 00:47:03.18\00:47:06.82 Kyle was a student in La Vida Mission 00:47:06.86\00:47:09.36 several years ago. 00:47:09.39\00:47:12.36 She told us, he told us he did not have 00:47:12.39\00:47:14.30 a very pleasant experience for the two years 00:47:14.33\00:47:16.60 that he was there and then he left. 00:47:16.63\00:47:19.17 He went to another school and then after some years 00:47:19.20\00:47:23.37 he became interested in spiritual things. 00:47:23.41\00:47:26.98 In spirit what? Spiritual things. 00:47:27.01\00:47:28.94 Okay, spiritual things. 00:47:28.98\00:47:30.31 So he went to a Baptist church. 00:47:30.35\00:47:33.68 He attended that church for 10 years 00:47:33.72\00:47:35.55 but never got baptized. 00:47:35.58\00:47:37.22 And then after that he was listening on... 00:47:37.25\00:47:42.26 Oh, no he was browsing on YouTube 00:47:42.29\00:47:44.36 and he saw Doug Batchelor's presentation 00:47:44.39\00:47:48.10 and he learned about the Sabbath. 00:47:48.13\00:47:50.47 He didn't know that Doug Batchelor 00:47:50.50\00:47:52.13 was a Seventh-day Adventist and so he said, 00:47:52.17\00:47:57.64 so Sabbath is, you know. 00:47:57.67\00:48:00.51 He said, "I had better find another church to go to." 00:48:00.54\00:48:04.85 So he thought of all the churches 00:48:04.88\00:48:08.58 around the area 00:48:08.62\00:48:10.59 and then La Vida Mission flashed to him and said, 00:48:10.62\00:48:13.36 I don't know if I want to go back to La Vida 00:48:13.39\00:48:16.19 but it kept, you know, flashing through his mind 00:48:16.22\00:48:19.53 and he said, "Oh, well, I better go there and try." 00:48:19.56\00:48:22.80 So he went there and when he went there 00:48:22.83\00:48:25.73 and attended the church, 00:48:25.77\00:48:27.10 it was the first Sabbath of January. 00:48:27.14\00:48:30.21 He was with his grandmother in a wheelchair 00:48:30.24\00:48:32.51 and I was on the wheelchair too because of my accident, 00:48:32.54\00:48:35.04 so the connection was instant. 00:48:35.08\00:48:37.45 And he said, "Wow, it's so different. 00:48:37.48\00:48:41.58 I feel different coming back to La Vida. 00:48:41.62\00:48:45.42 People are also very friendly. 00:48:45.45\00:48:48.36 So we invited them to come back and they came back 00:48:48.39\00:48:51.69 and then he talked to me and my husband and said, 00:48:51.73\00:48:54.40 "Can you do Bible study at their house?" 00:48:54.43\00:48:57.10 And he gathers the Navajo people 00:48:57.13\00:48:59.43 and because he is a Navajo speaker, 00:48:59.47\00:49:02.10 he is my husband's interpreter in Navajo. 00:49:02.14\00:49:06.34 How wonderful. 00:49:06.37\00:49:07.81 And after a year of study in their house, 00:49:07.84\00:49:12.58 he gave his life to Jesus by baptism. 00:49:12.61\00:49:17.92 So he got baptized and now we're helping him 00:49:17.95\00:49:21.66 go through Southwestern Adventist University 00:49:21.69\00:49:24.99 to get his church's ministry certificate. 00:49:25.03\00:49:28.33 Wonderful. 00:49:28.36\00:49:29.93 So he is a potential Bible worker 00:49:29.96\00:49:32.40 for the Navajo. 00:49:32.43\00:49:33.77 That is one great need on the Navajo reservation, 00:49:33.80\00:49:36.17 Navajo pastors, and Navajo Bible workers 00:49:36.20\00:49:38.24 because it's hard, their language is very hard. 00:49:38.27\00:49:41.34 Do most of them not speak English? 00:49:41.38\00:49:44.01 The older people. 00:49:44.05\00:49:46.08 Oh, I see.
