00:08:42.18\00:08:46.45 What was your world like growing up? 00:08:46.49\00:08:49.29 Well, my parents are both deaf. 00:08:49.32\00:08:53.29 And I thought that was a very normal family, 00:08:53.33\00:08:57.33 a very average family. 00:08:57.37\00:08:59.33 And I learned to sign when I was just months old. 00:08:59.37\00:09:04.61 My Mom and Dad didn't speak and they would sign to me 00:09:04.64\00:09:07.71 as just like a mother would coo her baby. 00:09:07.74\00:09:09.88 She would sign to me. She'd go, "Oh, you're so cute." 00:09:09.91\00:09:14.58 And that was my language. 00:09:14.62\00:09:16.38 And I thought that everyone should know sign language. 00:09:16.42\00:09:20.39 So as I grew up and I was about five years old, 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.73 I went to the kindergarten registration, 00:09:24.76\00:09:26.90 I saw that other people around me, 00:09:26.93\00:09:28.43 all these adults could speak in here, 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.40 and I thought there was something wrong 00:09:30.43\00:09:31.77 with all of those people 00:09:31.80\00:09:33.34 because you should be deaf when you grow up. 00:09:33.37\00:09:36.64 But, yes, my Mom and Dad, they both were... 00:09:36.67\00:09:42.58 My Dad was born deaf, and my mom lost her hearing 00:09:42.61\00:09:45.15 when she was only 18 months old and so that's all they knew 00:09:45.18\00:09:48.15 is their deaf world in sign language, 00:09:48.18\00:09:51.45 and it's a beautiful, 00:09:51.49\00:09:52.82 beautiful heritage for me to also have. 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.52 It is but let me ask you this. 00:09:55.56\00:09:57.29 Did that make it difficult 00:09:57.33\00:09:59.63 for you to learn to speak English? 00:09:59.66\00:10:01.83 That's a very good question. 00:10:01.86\00:10:03.20 And a lot of people have asked me that. 00:10:03.23\00:10:05.03 It was difficult for me 00:10:05.07\00:10:07.34 because both my Mom and Dad signed me 00:10:07.37\00:10:09.27 and all the family around me that could hear and speak, 00:10:09.30\00:10:12.71 they chose to sign to me because I was so cute. 00:10:12.74\00:10:16.34 If you ever would watch a little two or three year old 00:10:16.38\00:10:19.68 or five year old sign, 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.25 they are so cute when their little hands move 00:10:21.28\00:10:23.82 and my Mom would get so frustrated. 00:10:23.85\00:10:26.02 She was a stay-at-home mom. 00:10:26.05\00:10:27.39 She would send me to daycare or babysitters 00:10:27.42\00:10:29.89 trying to encourage me to talk. 00:10:29.92\00:10:31.76 I did not talk, I refused to talk. 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.56 And so Mom, she put Sesame Street on TV, 00:10:34.60\00:10:36.80 hoping that I would learn to speak that way, 00:10:36.83\00:10:39.40 but yet in kindergarten 00:10:39.43\00:10:40.77 I still had to take speech therapy. 00:10:40.80\00:10:43.00 I can imagine that. 00:10:43.04\00:10:44.61 So were your parents, since they spoke sign language, 00:10:44.64\00:10:49.58 did they also, you know, I've never thought about this 00:10:49.61\00:10:52.05 till right now, it makes me a stupid question. 00:10:52.08\00:10:54.42 But when someone, 00:10:54.45\00:10:55.78 when your primary native language 00:10:55.82\00:10:58.52 is sign language, does that put you... 00:10:58.55\00:11:03.39 Would it be like someone else 00:11:03.43\00:11:04.79 who maybe their native language is Spanish. 00:11:04.83\00:11:09.66 Is it harder for them to read English 00:11:09.70\00:11:12.10 is what I'm thinking about. 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.47 Oh, I'm so glad you asked that question actually. 00:11:13.50\00:11:16.10 It is very difficult because in sign language, 00:11:16.14\00:11:19.17 everything is based on visual 00:11:19.21\00:11:21.64 and there is abstract of course, 00:11:21.68\00:11:23.01 but everything is based on spatial relationship to you. 00:11:23.04\00:11:28.28 It is so different than English. 00:11:28.32\00:11:30.39 You know, the grammar is different. 00:11:30.42\00:11:31.75 Of course, it's not a sign for every English word. 00:11:31.79\00:11:35.46 It's its own language. 00:11:35.49\00:11:36.86 And so when you have 00:11:36.89\00:11:39.06 someone who is accustomed to just signing, 00:11:39.09\00:11:41.80 that's what they know, that's their language 00:11:41.83\00:11:43.43 and they try to read English, it uses a different grammar, 00:11:43.47\00:11:46.23 it's linear, it's not a 3D image. 00:11:46.27\00:11:49.10 And so they have to learn what those words mean, 00:11:49.14\00:11:51.64 and how to put it in the right order. 00:11:51.67\00:11:53.64 It is not easy for a lot of deaf people, 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.78 especially if they learn to sign first. 00:11:55.81\00:11:59.05 And so we find that 00:11:59.08\00:12:00.98 some deaf people do not like reading at all, 00:12:01.02\00:12:04.32 and many of them struggle and, or they may feel like 00:12:04.35\00:12:07.36 they are not really good at writing, 00:12:07.39\00:12:09.19 and so they may not be interested 00:12:09.22\00:12:10.69 in running notes with someone 00:12:10.73\00:12:12.23 because they don't want to look stupid. 00:12:12.26\00:12:13.80 They're not stupid 00:12:13.83\00:12:15.23 but they don't want to come across 00:12:15.26\00:12:16.63 as being ignorant 00:12:16.67\00:12:18.00 because they can't write English very well 00:12:18.03\00:12:20.34 and so... 00:12:20.37\00:12:23.67 If you come across a deaf person 00:12:23.71\00:12:25.04 who doesn't feel comfortable writing, 00:12:25.07\00:12:26.81 be aware that, that may be why. 00:12:26.84\00:12:28.68 He may just not feel comfortable 00:12:28.71\00:12:30.71 with broken English. 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.15 To hand you a note with broken English, 00:12:32.18\00:12:33.72 not sure if you would understand 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.08 what they were trying to convey. 00:12:35.12\00:12:36.45 Because even though they may be people 00:12:36.48\00:12:38.82 who were born in the United States, 00:12:38.85\00:12:40.36 to them English is a second language. 00:12:40.39\00:12:42.99 But how did that affect your parents as far as... 00:12:43.02\00:12:46.23 Did they read the Bible? Could they read the Bible? 00:12:46.26\00:12:49.10 Were they Christians? Did they know the Lord? 00:12:49.13\00:12:52.67 My Mom was Adventist when she was in her 30s. 00:12:52.70\00:12:56.47 That's when she was baptized. 00:12:56.50\00:12:58.17 And she learned about the truth through her deaf friends 00:12:58.21\00:13:00.64 who were also... 00:13:00.68\00:13:02.58 You know going to church she really struggled 00:13:02.61\00:13:04.91 because she had a hard time understanding the Bible. 00:13:04.95\00:13:07.55 And when her friends came and stayed with her, 00:13:07.58\00:13:12.05 they would have to explain what those words meant. 00:13:12.09\00:13:16.29 Some of the Bibles were written in a higher grade level 00:13:16.32\00:13:18.79 and, you know, like the King James Version 00:13:18.83\00:13:20.90 uses words that are not used the same way today anyway. 00:13:20.93\00:13:24.30 And then there are other words 00:13:24.33\00:13:25.67 that just doesn't seem to make sense, 00:13:25.70\00:13:28.50 so my Mom, her Bible, 00:13:28.54\00:13:31.01 even today she would take a word 00:13:31.04\00:13:33.68 that she didn't understand. 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.14 She would circle that word and put a definition, 00:13:35.18\00:13:37.81 another word that she does know she would write. 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.32 Her Bible is just covered with those kind of definitions. 00:13:40.35\00:13:44.39 And we've had some books at home, 00:13:44.42\00:13:47.59 different books like The Desire of Ages, 00:13:47.62\00:13:49.12 and she would do the same thing. 00:13:49.16\00:13:50.49 And I now have them and they're precious to me. 00:13:50.53\00:13:52.36 I will never let them go 00:13:52.39\00:13:53.73 because it shows how much effort she put into 00:13:53.76\00:13:56.87 just trying to understand a sentence 00:13:56.90\00:14:00.04 and then to understand what it means to her 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.04 in her life and her spiritual life. 00:14:02.07\00:14:05.04 So, yeah, it was very hard for them 00:14:05.07\00:14:09.38 just to read the Bible. 00:14:09.41\00:14:11.18 So how old were you when you developed 00:14:11.21\00:14:14.55 personal relationship with the Lord? 00:14:14.58\00:14:17.15 You know that I can't tell you 00:14:17.19\00:14:19.09 because my Mom especially was a good teacher to me, 00:14:19.12\00:14:23.66 even though she struggled with what she knew 00:14:23.69\00:14:25.79 in trying to understand the Bible. 00:14:25.83\00:14:27.60 She knew the basic concept of salvation, 00:14:27.63\00:14:30.30 and she just wanted me to know that Jesus was my best friend, 00:14:30.33\00:14:34.24 and I just grew up loving Jesus with all my heart. 00:14:34.27\00:14:38.37 And so I can't tell you 00:14:38.41\00:14:40.21 when that realization came to me, 00:14:40.24\00:14:42.58 and I can tell you when I slipped away 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.18 and came back. 00:14:44.21\00:14:45.55 But that relationship, 00:14:45.58\00:14:47.12 that instruction was always in my heart. 00:14:47.15\00:14:50.75 So I thank my Mom especially for sharing Jesus with me. 00:14:50.79\00:14:54.69 Now you became involved in deaf ministries 00:14:54.72\00:14:57.43 rather young, did you not? 00:14:57.46\00:14:58.79 I did and I volunteered. 00:14:58.83\00:15:02.16 I was sitting in a very small country church. 00:15:02.20\00:15:05.70 There was only 16 people there, very small church. 00:15:05.73\00:15:08.77 And as I was sitting there, honestly I was quite bored 00:15:08.80\00:15:12.61 and I was trying to be blessed. 00:15:12.64\00:15:16.24 And then I got to thinking about my Mom and Dad, 00:15:16.28\00:15:19.21 they were sitting over there trying to quietly sign 00:15:19.25\00:15:21.25 if you will, trying to keep their signs low 00:15:21.28\00:15:23.18 so it wouldn't be distracting to other people, 00:15:23.22\00:15:25.32 and they were signing back and forth. 00:15:25.35\00:15:27.06 And I looked at them and I thought, 00:15:27.09\00:15:28.96 you know, I may be bored. 00:15:28.99\00:15:31.33 But my Mom and Dad can't hear what's being said, 00:15:31.36\00:15:33.76 at least I can, 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.53 and the more I thought about it, 00:15:35.56\00:15:36.90 the more horrible I felt 00:15:36.93\00:15:38.27 because I realized the only reason 00:15:38.30\00:15:40.24 they were at church was so I could go to church. 00:15:40.27\00:15:43.61 And so I asked my Mom, Mom, may I interpret 00:15:43.64\00:15:48.61 and she looked at me, her eyes popped out 00:15:48.64\00:15:51.05 because I was only seven years old. 00:15:51.08\00:15:53.62 And she said, "Please, you don't need to feel like 00:15:53.65\00:15:56.65 you need to interpret." 00:15:56.69\00:15:58.02 But I wanted to so much but I was also very shy 00:15:58.05\00:16:01.16 and here it is, it's a small congregation 00:16:01.19\00:16:03.49 but I asked Mom, if it would be okay 00:16:03.53\00:16:04.86 if I just stood at the end of the aisle, 00:16:04.89\00:16:06.90 so no one else would see me. 00:16:06.93\00:16:08.86 We were on the back row. 00:16:08.90\00:16:10.23 And I tried to interpret that sermon 00:16:10.27\00:16:13.57 and it was a very difficult sermon. 00:16:13.60\00:16:15.57 I remember this. 00:16:15.60\00:16:17.01 The speaker used huge words, 00:16:17.04\00:16:18.94 I had never really thought about before, righteousness. 00:16:18.97\00:16:21.64 I didn't even know how to sign that word. 00:16:21.68\00:16:23.65 I didn't even know how to spell that word, 00:16:23.68\00:16:25.85 but I tried my best. 00:16:25.88\00:16:27.22 And my Mom, she just sat there 00:16:27.25\00:16:28.58 with tears coming out of her eyes 00:16:28.62\00:16:29.95 because that was my heart's desire, 00:16:29.98\00:16:32.05 and the Lord just spoke to my heart at that time 00:16:32.09\00:16:35.56 and He has just placed that burden on my heart ever since. 00:16:35.59\00:16:39.19 No matter how many times I think, 00:16:39.23\00:16:40.56 well, I'm going to branch out, 00:16:40.60\00:16:41.93 I'm going to do something different. 00:16:41.96\00:16:43.47 I just can't forget my people, the deaf people. 00:16:43.50\00:16:48.30 Now who are the deaf? 00:16:48.34\00:16:50.87 Well, that can be... 00:16:50.91\00:16:52.31 It's a simple answer but it can be complicated, 00:16:52.34\00:16:54.28 the deaf. 00:16:54.31\00:16:55.64 There are two groups of deaf people. 00:16:55.68\00:16:57.78 There are those that lose their hearing later in life 00:16:57.81\00:17:00.92 that may never learn sign language, 00:17:00.95\00:17:02.62 that might just rely on hearing aids, 00:17:02.65\00:17:05.12 they are deaf. 00:17:05.15\00:17:06.49 But then there is the deaf community 00:17:06.52\00:17:08.82 and these people that have adopted sign language 00:17:08.86\00:17:11.69 that go to deaf events, that socialize, 00:17:11.73\00:17:16.36 who make friends specifically intentional 00:17:16.40\00:17:19.70 with deaf people and that's a deaf community. 00:17:19.73\00:17:24.24 And it's not a community based solely 00:17:24.27\00:17:27.14 on their lack of hearing 00:17:27.18\00:17:28.51 but also based on sign language. 00:17:28.54\00:17:30.38 And signing which is one of the most 00:17:30.41\00:17:31.75 beautiful languages on the planet. 00:17:31.78\00:17:33.65 I love to see somebody 00:17:33.68\00:17:35.02 when they're singing who will sign, 00:17:35.05\00:17:36.58 Jennifer LaMountain will do that, 00:17:36.62\00:17:37.95 sometimes sign, it's beautiful. 00:17:37.99\00:17:40.06 But now, you know, we talk about a deaf community. 00:17:40.09\00:17:44.06 I don't think, if you are hearing impaired, 00:17:44.09\00:17:48.00 that's one thing. 00:17:48.03\00:17:49.36 I recently had a viral infection 00:17:49.40\00:17:52.83 that I took for granted, it went into my ear 00:17:52.87\00:17:56.24 and I went into a high altitude situation 00:17:56.27\00:17:59.41 and it ended up driving it in and I ended up 00:17:59.44\00:18:01.71 with sudden sensory neuro hearing loss. 00:18:01.74\00:18:05.51 So it damaged the nerves in my ear 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.52 and that's not reversible. 00:18:07.55\00:18:09.15 And there's a singer 00:18:09.18\00:18:11.55 who sings on 3ABN here locally in the area, 00:18:11.59\00:18:14.56 younger woman, 00:18:14.59\00:18:15.92 who also had this same condition 00:18:15.96\00:18:19.89 and about the same time 00:18:19.93\00:18:21.53 she was a few months ahead of me, 00:18:21.56\00:18:23.77 and I've been praying earnestly for her 00:18:23.80\00:18:25.57 because it was driving her nuts. 00:18:25.60\00:18:28.14 She had severe tinnitus. 00:18:28.17\00:18:31.04 And it was driving her nuts, 00:18:31.07\00:18:32.51 and then when it happened to me, 00:18:32.54\00:18:34.11 I just got this constant roaring in my ear 00:18:34.14\00:18:36.88 and the tinnitus, the high pitched ringing, 00:18:36.91\00:18:40.08 and then I've got this echoing squeal in response to sound. 00:18:40.12\00:18:45.92 So you don't have any idea 00:18:45.95\00:18:49.22 until you have some kind of an impairment, 00:18:49.26\00:18:52.23 and it can happen 00:18:52.26\00:18:53.73 from something as simple as a viral infection. 00:18:53.76\00:18:57.17 You have no idea 00:18:57.20\00:18:58.60 how much we take our hearing for granted. 00:18:58.63\00:19:01.04 So, you know, we see deaf people, 00:19:01.07\00:19:03.00 they look, they can walk around, 00:19:03.04\00:19:05.91 they look pretty much the same as all of us. 00:19:05.94\00:19:09.14 We don't realize how isolated they are. 00:19:09.18\00:19:13.15 And if they come into church, 00:19:13.18\00:19:14.92 your parents just sitting there like, 00:19:14.95\00:19:17.92 they're watching a silent movie or something 00:19:17.95\00:19:20.32 but how difficult is it for the deaf community 00:19:20.36\00:19:26.76 to develop relationships with people who aren't deaf, 00:19:26.80\00:19:31.93 who don't sign. 00:19:31.97\00:19:33.50 It is so hard, so hard because... 00:19:33.54\00:19:37.77 Well, the people who can hear 00:19:37.81\00:19:39.57 often feel very awkward around those who can't hear. 00:19:39.61\00:19:42.31 They don't know what to do. 00:19:42.34\00:19:43.68 And I understand, I can relate to that. 00:19:43.71\00:19:45.58 If I go overseas and, or maybe even visitor 00:19:45.61\00:19:49.25 in my own church that speaks a different language, 00:19:49.28\00:19:51.09 I immediately think, well, 00:19:51.12\00:19:52.45 I'll just let somebody else handle that. 00:19:52.49\00:19:54.46 I understand, I catch myself doing that 00:19:54.49\00:19:56.12 and I get furious with myself 00:19:56.16\00:19:58.19 because I have seen people do that to my parents 00:19:58.23\00:20:00.90 and to other deaf friends and such. 00:20:00.93\00:20:04.20 So I try not to do that, but it can be very awkward. 00:20:04.23\00:20:07.37 And over here on the deaf side, they... 00:20:07.40\00:20:10.91 One thing to remember is deaf people are so used 00:20:10.94\00:20:13.24 to living in a world of hearing people. 00:20:13.27\00:20:15.48 They know how to communicate with hearing people. 00:20:15.51\00:20:18.38 They can write notes, they gesture. 00:20:18.41\00:20:19.91 They can figure out a way and they're not afraid. 00:20:19.95\00:20:23.79 Well, the hearing people may be afraid of saying 00:20:23.82\00:20:26.59 or doing something wrong, it makes them feel nervous, 00:20:26.62\00:20:29.59 but the deaf have seen it all and they're not afraid of that. 00:20:29.62\00:20:35.03 But what we find is some deaf people 00:20:35.06\00:20:36.87 are suspicious of people that can hear. 00:20:36.90\00:20:40.67 They might, they have a distrust. 00:20:40.70\00:20:42.90 Maybe they're going to take advantage of me. 00:20:42.94\00:20:44.71 Maybe they don't care about me. 00:20:44.74\00:20:46.21 Maybe they're just interested 00:20:46.24\00:20:47.58 only because there's a sign language 00:20:47.61\00:20:48.94 but they don't care about me as a person, 00:20:48.98\00:20:50.88 and there's a lot of distrust. 00:20:50.91\00:20:52.31 And so you have distrust over hear and fear over here, 00:20:52.35\00:20:55.38 and just people on average, people walking down the street 00:20:55.42\00:20:58.35 or in a church setting or whatever it may be, 00:20:58.39\00:21:00.96 it's very hard for them to interact. 00:21:00.99\00:21:03.22 There's this wall between the two groups. 00:21:03.26\00:21:06.49 And so, it's simple to break down that wall 00:21:06.53\00:21:09.26 just by simply looking at each other 00:21:09.30\00:21:10.87 as fellow human beings that God has created, 00:21:10.90\00:21:13.64 we're children of God. 00:21:13.67\00:21:15.20 And, so what if somebody can't hear. 00:21:15.24\00:21:17.77 There's other ways around that. 00:21:17.81\00:21:19.67 And whether to learn sign language 00:21:19.71\00:21:21.44 or not be afraid of gesturing and letting deaf people know 00:21:21.48\00:21:25.95 who might write a note that it's okay, 00:21:25.98\00:21:28.18 we'll figure this out. 00:21:28.22\00:21:29.55 Don't worry about your English skills 00:21:29.58\00:21:30.92 if they have a hard time with that. 00:21:30.95\00:21:32.42 But I would imagine that there is a sense of isolation 00:21:32.45\00:21:36.46 even in the family if you're the only deaf person. 00:21:36.49\00:21:39.46 Is it not? Yes, absolutely. 00:21:39.49\00:21:43.23 Working with deaf people for my entire life really, 00:21:43.26\00:21:46.00 I have met many, many people 00:21:46.03\00:21:48.20 who are resentful to their parents, 00:21:48.24\00:21:50.81 maybe because their parents didn't want their children 00:21:50.84\00:21:52.97 to learn how to sign. 00:21:53.01\00:21:55.01 Maybe physicians have told them, 00:21:55.04\00:21:56.54 "Don't let them learn to sign 00:21:56.58\00:21:57.91 because they'll never learn to talk." 00:21:57.95\00:21:59.61 And they want their children to be as "normal" as possible 00:21:59.65\00:22:04.95 so they don't teach them sign language, 00:22:04.99\00:22:06.52 and they resent that because when they grow up, 00:22:06.55\00:22:08.69 they realize what they had missed 00:22:08.72\00:22:10.33 and they want to sign. 00:22:10.36\00:22:12.99 Also sometimes people will sit around the table 00:22:13.03\00:22:16.26 and three or four people are talking back and forth, 00:22:16.30\00:22:18.73 they're laughing, telling jokes 00:22:18.77\00:22:20.10 or a funny story whatever it may be. 00:22:20.14\00:22:22.20 And this one deaf person may say, 00:22:22.24\00:22:23.77 what's going on, and nobody is telling them. 00:22:23.81\00:22:26.41 And so, finally they'll say, wait a minute, wait a minute, 00:22:26.44\00:22:28.78 I've seen this a thousand times if not more, 00:22:28.81\00:22:32.51 just a moment, just a moment, 00:22:32.55\00:22:33.95 and when they get done, they say, 00:22:33.98\00:22:36.35 "Oh, it wasn't important." 00:22:36.38\00:22:38.65 And like well, it was... 00:22:38.69\00:22:40.82 It doesn't matter if it's important or not, 00:22:40.86\00:22:43.46 it's part of fellowship and so they... 00:22:43.49\00:22:45.76 So they feel very marginalized I supposed. 00:22:45.79\00:22:47.26 They do. They do. 00:22:47.30\00:22:49.20 And at family events whether it's a reunion. 00:22:49.23\00:22:51.23 My Mom herself when I go to family reunion 00:22:51.27\00:22:54.40 because she says, it breaks her heart 00:22:54.44\00:22:56.77 that she sits there, she hasn't seen 00:22:56.81\00:22:58.17 many of these people for a long time 00:22:58.21\00:22:59.87 that they'll hug her because they do love her. 00:22:59.91\00:23:02.18 You know, they hug her and tell how good it was to see 00:23:02.21\00:23:04.71 or ask her a couple of questions, 00:23:04.75\00:23:06.08 and then they move on, 00:23:06.11\00:23:07.65 and she'll sit there all by herself. 00:23:07.68\00:23:09.52 And she said, it hurts too much to go to reunion. 00:23:09.55\00:23:13.36 So how many deaf people... 00:23:13.39\00:23:16.69 Tell us a little bit about where the deaf are here 00:23:16.73\00:23:20.53 in the United States and even I don't know 00:23:20.56\00:23:22.40 if you know world statistics 00:23:22.43\00:23:24.07 but, since you're with the North American division, 00:23:24.10\00:23:27.34 tell us about the deaf people 00:23:27.37\00:23:29.30 and the challenges they have in hearing... 00:23:29.34\00:23:35.04 Well, hearing, in learning the gospel... 00:23:35.08\00:23:37.68 There you go. 00:23:37.71\00:23:39.08 And the challenges they have in developing 00:23:39.11\00:23:43.95 that relationship with Christ? 00:23:43.99\00:23:45.85 Well, in North America we estimate 00:23:45.89\00:23:49.56 that there's about two million deaf people. 00:23:49.59\00:23:52.89 We don't know for sure. 00:23:52.93\00:23:54.63 Years ago in 1800 say actually we do a census 00:23:54.66\00:23:57.40 and they would say blind, deaf and they even had a category 00:23:57.43\00:24:02.47 and it's horrible but they called it idiot, 00:24:02.50\00:24:05.24 but I have looked, you know, 00:24:05.27\00:24:06.61 when I did my family tree research. 00:24:06.64\00:24:09.31 I saw that 00:24:09.34\00:24:11.35 and it was actually kind of helpful 00:24:11.38\00:24:12.71 'cause I could try to trace our lineage to see 00:24:12.75\00:24:14.95 if there is any deafness there. 00:24:14.98\00:24:16.69 But today the census does not ask if you're deaf, 00:24:16.72\00:24:19.95 so we estimate that there's about 00:24:19.99\00:24:21.36 two million people in North America 00:24:21.39\00:24:23.96 and around the world we're not really sure. 00:24:23.99\00:24:25.49 Some countries has a high rate of deafness, 00:24:25.53\00:24:27.80 whether it's because of genetics 00:24:27.83\00:24:30.37 or because of unsanitary conditions 00:24:30.40\00:24:32.57 where they lose their hearing because of infections. 00:24:32.60\00:24:35.00 But there's millions around the world. 00:24:35.04\00:24:38.21 Statistically there are more deaf people 00:24:38.24\00:24:40.34 than blind people around the world. 00:24:40.38\00:24:44.05 And as far as learning the gospel, 00:24:44.08\00:24:47.05 in North America, 00:24:47.08\00:24:48.42 here we have a whole section in the United States, 00:24:48.45\00:24:50.72 it's called the Bible Belt, right? 00:24:50.75\00:24:52.52 And we have access to Bible all over the country. 00:24:52.55\00:24:58.16 We live in the land, you know, 00:24:58.19\00:24:59.53 some people call a Christian nation, right? 00:24:59.56\00:25:01.10 We should be able to have many deaf people 00:25:01.13\00:25:03.90 come to know Jesus but we don't. 00:25:03.93\00:25:06.13 Only, in North America only 2 to 4% of deaf people 00:25:06.17\00:25:09.70 go to church of any kind, 00:25:09.74\00:25:12.11 Catholic, Lutheran, whatever, Baptist. 00:25:12.14\00:25:15.78 And what they're finding is that fewer and fewer 00:25:15.81\00:25:18.01 deaf people are going to church. 00:25:18.05\00:25:20.72 Years ago... 00:25:20.75\00:25:22.08 Well, if they're going in there... 00:25:22.12\00:25:23.45 First of all, even if there's an interpreter, 00:25:23.49\00:25:25.12 they're probably not getting the entire message. 00:25:25.15\00:25:27.66 Absolutely not. 00:25:27.69\00:25:29.02 And then they have the difficulty 00:25:29.06\00:25:32.16 in creating a relationship with someone, 00:25:32.19\00:25:36.16 so they're missing out on fellowship. 00:25:36.20\00:25:38.20 There's just so many challenges that I've never thought of, 00:25:38.23\00:25:41.47 you know, you're sitting here saying, 00:25:41.50\00:25:42.84 there's more deaf than there are blind, 00:25:42.87\00:25:44.81 yet they must do pretty well 00:25:44.84\00:25:48.18 at kind of staying in the background 00:25:48.21\00:25:52.08 because I don't really, I worked with a deaf woman 00:25:52.11\00:25:56.18 and that's why she lip read lips 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.85 and that's my move my lips very distinctly 00:25:58.89\00:26:02.76 because I was used to talking with her and... 00:26:02.79\00:26:08.10 But I can't think of, you know, 00:26:08.13\00:26:10.97 when you're talking about two million, 00:26:11.00\00:26:12.50 I can't think of any deaf people that I know 00:26:12.53\00:26:15.04 which is interesting. 00:26:15.07\00:26:16.60 So that means they're not coming to church. 00:26:16.64\00:26:18.24 They're not. 00:26:18.27\00:26:19.61 And I haven't thought, I mean God forgive me, 00:26:19.64\00:26:20.98 I thought about this. 00:26:21.01\00:26:22.34 Well, you know, and that's okay. 00:26:22.38\00:26:23.71 There's a lot of things I haven't thought about 00:26:23.75\00:26:25.21 until it's brought to your attention and... 00:26:25.25\00:26:29.18 Deaf people, you've mentioned it earlier, 00:26:29.22\00:26:30.92 there's, they look like everyone else. 00:26:30.95\00:26:34.92 You can't see hearing loss. 00:26:34.96\00:26:37.06 You can see if someone is maybe in a wheelchair, 00:26:37.09\00:26:39.73 a blind person because they may have 00:26:39.76\00:26:42.63 the walking cane or whatever, 00:26:42.66\00:26:45.10 but deafness, you know, unless they're wearing a shirt 00:26:45.13\00:26:48.70 that says, you know, 00:26:48.74\00:26:50.07 they went to deaf school or something, 00:26:50.11\00:26:51.44 you wouldn't know. 00:26:51.47\00:26:52.81 And so it's very easy. 00:26:52.84\00:26:54.74 You probably have seen many just passing the hallways, 00:26:54.78\00:26:58.88 there's aisles in the grocery store. 00:26:58.91\00:27:01.75 In fact I've had many experiences 00:27:01.78\00:27:03.39 where I did not recognize a deaf person 00:27:03.42\00:27:06.09 until later and I was just like, 00:27:06.12\00:27:07.92 well, if I can't recognize a deaf person, 00:27:07.96\00:27:10.19 then I'm sure a lot of other people would neither, 00:27:10.23\00:27:12.49 but it's very hard years ago, 00:27:12.53\00:27:15.80 Thomas Scalia dad brought sign language to North America. 00:27:15.83\00:27:20.17 He went to France, learned how to sign 00:27:20.20\00:27:22.77 and brought back a deaf teacher to North America. 00:27:22.80\00:27:25.21 He wanted deaf children in America 00:27:25.24\00:27:28.31 to have the ability to learn and go to school, 00:27:28.34\00:27:32.58 and the basic reason was he wanted them 00:27:32.61\00:27:35.72 to learn about Jesus. 00:27:35.75\00:27:38.09 He's a pastor, he was a Presbyterian minister 00:27:38.12\00:27:40.89 and that was his goal, 00:27:40.92\00:27:42.26 and many of the schools around North America 00:27:42.29\00:27:44.13 that started were Christian schools. 00:27:44.16\00:27:46.09 Lutherans and Catholics especially started 00:27:46.13\00:27:47.86 many schools for the deaf. 00:27:47.90\00:27:49.63 And so we thank them for that 00:27:49.66\00:27:51.53 and because of that Christian heritage, 00:27:51.57\00:27:54.10 many deaf people went to church. 00:27:54.14\00:27:55.84 Well, if they stayed at the school 00:27:55.87\00:27:57.64 all year round come, you know, one day a week, 00:27:57.67\00:28:00.18 they would all go to church together 00:28:00.21\00:28:02.24 and so Christianity became a very big part of their life, 00:28:02.28\00:28:07.72 but over the years... 00:28:07.75\00:28:11.59 There was this, there was all kinds of things 00:28:11.62\00:28:13.59 that happened but it's changed, 00:28:13.62\00:28:15.52 the dynamics have changed, 00:28:15.56\00:28:17.26 and it's gotten to the point now where... 00:28:17.29\00:28:20.23 God is the God of the hearing. I hear it all the time. 00:28:20.26\00:28:23.73 I hear it all the time, listen, I'm not any different than you. 00:28:23.77\00:28:26.23 But deaf people come up to me 00:28:26.27\00:28:28.20 and say, God, enough hearing, that's there's. 00:28:28.24\00:28:34.31 You know, not need, I'm deaf. 00:28:34.34\00:28:37.15 And I said, "No, you need God. 00:28:37.18\00:28:39.65 God is for you too and you're his child." 00:28:39.68\00:28:42.42 But it's just so easy for them, they feel so disfranchised, 00:28:42.45\00:28:46.62 I can't even say the word. 00:28:46.65\00:28:47.99 They distant from God, the God who made them. 00:28:48.02\00:28:50.83 And, that is so, so sad here in North America I see that. 00:28:50.86\00:28:56.80 So if only 2 to 4% 00:28:56.83\00:29:00.70 are Christians, how do we reach? 00:29:00.74\00:29:05.31 I mean, you can't if they have difficulty reading 00:29:05.34\00:29:08.81 because English is the second language, 00:29:08.84\00:29:10.81 so tracks aren't going to be very effective. 00:29:10.85\00:29:13.42 You can't give them a CD or a DVD 00:29:13.45\00:29:16.15 unless it's closed captioned which I will say 3ABN, 00:29:16.18\00:29:20.89 our programming is all closed captioned. 00:29:20.92\00:29:23.93 Praise the Lord. Amen. 00:29:23.96\00:29:26.36 But how do you reach on that, maybe an idea 00:29:26.39\00:29:31.50 is just carry around your little 3ABN cards 00:29:31.53\00:29:34.27 and hand them out, write on there closed caption 00:29:34.30\00:29:36.50 and they know to turn to this channel but... 00:29:36.54\00:29:40.61 Tell us about the ministry, 00:29:40.64\00:29:43.55 I mean you are the coordinator for deaf ministries at AND. 00:29:43.58\00:29:47.98 But tell us about Three Angels North... 00:29:48.02\00:29:52.92 No Three Angels Deaf Ministries? 00:29:52.95\00:29:56.19 Tell us what are they doing to reach the deaf? 00:29:56.22\00:29:59.59 Do they minister to the deaf community? 00:29:59.63\00:30:02.76 Does a deaf community have churches of its own that 00:30:02.80\00:30:06.97 where they can fellowship and have relationship. 00:30:07.00\00:30:09.57 Tell us about that? Okay, great. 00:30:09.60\00:30:12.37 Three Angels Deaf Ministries does two things, 00:30:12.41\00:30:15.14 one it reaches out to those who are not Christians. 00:30:15.18\00:30:18.11 They try to share the gospel with them. 00:30:18.15\00:30:20.92 And then over here on the other side, 00:30:20.95\00:30:22.62 they try to minister to those who are 00:30:22.65\00:30:24.82 and try to bring them 00:30:24.85\00:30:26.19 into a closer relationship with Jesus 00:30:26.22\00:30:27.56 and help them to understand the Bible. 00:30:27.59\00:30:28.99 We find that many of the outreach materials 00:30:29.02\00:30:31.69 that we use to reach out 00:30:31.73\00:30:33.46 to those that are not Christians, 00:30:33.50\00:30:35.26 the ones that are say, 00:30:35.30\00:30:36.63 I don't know anything about the Bible. 00:30:36.67\00:30:39.67 I want to also study the Bible. I also want those DVDs. 00:30:39.70\00:30:43.00 I also want too, and so we find that 00:30:43.04\00:30:45.27 some people who have been baptized 00:30:45.31\00:30:46.68 previously are re-baptized 00:30:46.71\00:30:48.54 because they feel like they didn't know 00:30:48.58\00:30:50.01 who God really was 00:30:50.05\00:30:51.38 or what His teachings in the Bible are, 00:30:51.41\00:30:52.91 and so they want to be baptized again. 00:30:52.95\00:30:55.38 And so, yeah, so there's two things. 00:30:55.42\00:30:58.85 I do have some pictures. Well, I'd love to see them. 00:30:58.89\00:31:01.46 Yeah, and I'd like to start out by telling about camp meetings. 00:31:01.49\00:31:04.93 There are camp meetings, I think there's four now 00:31:04.96\00:31:07.33 in the United States and... 00:31:07.36\00:31:10.77 There is a very large one this year in Oregon. 00:31:10.80\00:31:15.10 It was held at Milo Adventist Academy. 00:31:15.14\00:31:18.51 And there was 143 people, most of them deaf, 00:31:18.54\00:31:21.94 and it was just an amazing experience to see 00:31:21.98\00:31:24.51 so many deaf people together learning about God. 00:31:24.55\00:31:27.62 There is so much study on the Bible. 00:31:27.65\00:31:30.65 They spent all day studying and working together 00:31:30.69\00:31:34.29 and doing fun activities. 00:31:34.32\00:31:37.16 Now the next photo will show you 00:31:37.19\00:31:38.53 the Lord's Supper or communion. 00:31:38.56\00:31:41.06 And this is in the church and it was so amazing. 00:31:41.10\00:31:44.83 Is this the Deaf Community Church? 00:31:44.87\00:31:46.37 This is out... That's a good question. 00:31:46.40\00:31:47.97 It is at the deaf camp meaning. 00:31:48.00\00:31:49.57 It is put together by a deaf group 00:31:49.60\00:31:55.58 that's what I'm looking for a deaf group 00:31:55.61\00:31:56.95 that's at Portland, Oregon. 00:31:56.98\00:32:00.18 And so they put together this camp meeting. 00:32:00.22\00:32:02.45 They actually were celebrating 40 years 00:32:02.48\00:32:05.52 of having this camp meeting. 00:32:05.55\00:32:06.89 It's a grassroots movement. 00:32:06.92\00:32:08.26 People said, "We need to get together once a year." 00:32:08.29\00:32:10.23 And so they just said, "Let's do a camp meeting. 00:32:10.26\00:32:12.03 The hearing have a camp meeting, 00:32:12.06\00:32:13.40 we can have one too." 00:32:13.43\00:32:14.76 And so they have special speakers, 00:32:14.80\00:32:16.63 not all of them are deaf, some are. 00:32:16.67\00:32:19.67 It's just like a regular camp camping. 00:32:19.70\00:32:21.90 They have their speakers, they have their activities, 00:32:21.94\00:32:23.74 they have fun, food and fellowship. 00:32:23.77\00:32:26.94 So what I love about camp meetings is that 00:32:26.98\00:32:29.64 the deaf people can participate in worship service. 00:32:29.68\00:32:32.98 They do the special music. They do the scripture reading. 00:32:33.01\00:32:35.78 They pick up the offering. 00:32:35.82\00:32:37.55 And the picture of the Lord's Supper is my favorite 00:32:37.59\00:32:39.82 because I can see them participate in that 00:32:39.85\00:32:43.12 where they kneel in prayer, where they lead out. 00:32:43.16\00:32:47.60 You have the ushers that distribute 00:32:47.63\00:32:49.30 the bread and orange. 00:32:49.33\00:32:52.10 And to see the choir get up there 00:32:52.13\00:32:53.80 and sign their song, it's all deaf lead, 00:32:53.84\00:32:56.74 and it gives them a chance to own the program 00:32:56.77\00:32:59.44 instead of just being a bystander. 00:32:59.47\00:33:02.01 So another feature about 00:33:02.04\00:33:03.68 the camp meeting is the baptism. 00:33:03.71\00:33:05.55 And that is the special event at the camp meeting 00:33:05.58\00:33:09.08 because we want to see souls come to know Jesus 00:33:09.12\00:33:11.05 and make a commitment to Him. 00:33:11.09\00:33:12.95 And in this picture there's quite a few. 00:33:12.99\00:33:14.56 All those in white are baptized at this event. 00:33:14.59\00:33:18.23 And many of them are re-baptized again 00:33:18.26\00:33:21.80 because they did not fully understand 00:33:21.83\00:33:25.10 what they were committing to. 00:33:25.13\00:33:26.84 They wanted to follow Jesus. Yes. 00:33:26.87\00:33:29.10 But they didn't know who He was. 00:33:29.14\00:33:31.07 And so as they studied with Three Angels Deaf Ministries 00:33:31.11\00:33:33.91 through our Bible school program 00:33:33.94\00:33:35.28 that we have, 00:33:35.31\00:33:36.64 they were just enamored with what they have learned. 00:33:36.68\00:33:39.65 They said, "We want to really serve Jesus." 00:33:39.68\00:33:41.72 And they asked to be baptized again. 00:33:41.75\00:33:43.79 Praise God. 00:33:43.82\00:33:45.35 So you were asking about different deaf groups. 00:33:45.39\00:33:48.09 There are a few deaf, I won't call them congregations 00:33:48.12\00:33:51.59 but deaf groups. 00:33:51.63\00:33:53.50 There is two official congregations. 00:33:53.53\00:33:55.83 There's one in Silver Spring, Maryland, 00:33:55.86\00:33:58.17 that's an Adventist group. 00:33:58.20\00:34:00.34 And there's one in Collegedale, Tennessee area 00:34:00.37\00:34:04.27 that is as well, 00:34:04.31\00:34:05.64 and both of them actually do live streaming 00:34:05.67\00:34:07.11 of their services. 00:34:07.14\00:34:08.48 So deaf people all over the country 00:34:08.51\00:34:10.05 can turn in and watch that live. 00:34:10.08\00:34:13.48 And I think that's just a great opportunity. 00:34:13.52\00:34:15.98 So where if somebody, repeat those, 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.95 because somebody is watching is going to want 00:34:17.99\00:34:20.46 to write that down for a deaf friend, 00:34:20.49\00:34:22.52 where would they go, so it's... 00:34:22.56\00:34:24.73 There's two. 00:34:24.76\00:34:26.33 One is easy to remember if you don't have a pen ready. 00:34:26.36\00:34:29.73 It's 3ADM, not 3ABN. 00:34:29.76\00:34:33.77 The 3ADM.org. 00:34:33.80\00:34:36.57 And the second one is DeafChurchOnline.org. 00:34:36.60\00:34:41.68 And both of them are very good. 00:34:41.71\00:34:45.38 Praise God. Yes, and it's... 00:34:45.41\00:34:48.05 It gives the deaf people 00:34:48.08\00:34:49.42 something to watch in their own language. 00:34:49.45\00:34:51.25 And you mentioned interpreters. Interpreters are so important. 00:34:51.29\00:34:54.12 We need many more interpreters in our churches. 00:34:54.16\00:34:57.56 But the problem is that you're only getting 00:34:57.59\00:35:00.30 everything second handed 00:35:00.33\00:35:01.86 and not everything translates very well. 00:35:01.90\00:35:04.20 And sometimes the interpreters are not very skilled either. 00:35:04.23\00:35:09.00 Into that becomes your deaf ministries, 00:35:09.04\00:35:12.14 the interpreter and the people who are filling the pews 00:35:12.17\00:35:15.54 that are deaf, it may be one person 00:35:15.58\00:35:18.05 but with these congregations that are deaf, it's wonderful 00:35:18.08\00:35:20.68 because they are a family 00:35:20.72\00:35:22.32 and they interact with each other as family. 00:35:22.35\00:35:25.49 And so if you have a deaf person in your church, 00:35:25.52\00:35:29.12 and you are not a deaf group or a congregation, 00:35:29.16\00:35:33.40 be sure that you understand that 00:35:33.43\00:35:35.20 they need that fellowship. 00:35:35.23\00:35:37.07 They don't want people just to hug them, 00:35:37.10\00:35:39.30 although that is very important 00:35:39.33\00:35:41.04 but they need, they need friends. 00:35:41.07\00:35:43.37 And I know a lot of people are busy and they tend to say, 00:35:43.41\00:35:45.91 "Well, I don't know sign language 00:35:45.94\00:35:47.34 that makes me feel awkward." 00:35:47.38\00:35:49.14 There's an interpreter, they're fine. 00:35:49.18\00:35:52.28 Well, they're getting the information 00:35:52.31\00:35:54.25 but they need family. 00:35:54.28\00:35:56.08 And, you know, when you're feeling discouraged, 00:35:56.12\00:35:58.55 it's not always the sermon that blesses you, 00:35:58.59\00:36:01.79 it's often that friend that's sitting next to you 00:36:01.82\00:36:03.76 in the pew or someone down the foyer 00:36:03.79\00:36:06.49 that hugs you and he's like, you know, 00:36:06.53\00:36:08.46 I'm really glad you're here today, 00:36:08.50\00:36:10.23 as you dialogue, they find out your troubles 00:36:10.27\00:36:12.93 they promise that they'll pray for you, 00:36:12.97\00:36:14.44 maybe pray for you right then. 00:36:14.47\00:36:16.10 And that's the blessing that they need too. 00:36:16.14\00:36:19.31 But deaf groups are few and far in between 00:36:19.34\00:36:26.21 and they tend to be in large cities 00:36:26.25\00:36:28.65 where there is more higher deaf population 00:36:28.68\00:36:31.42 that might come. 00:36:31.45\00:36:32.79 So does Three Angels Deaf Ministries, 00:36:32.82\00:36:36.26 do they have resources available for the deaf? 00:36:36.29\00:36:42.00 Yes. Yes, we have... 00:36:42.03\00:36:46.84 Let's see. 00:36:46.87\00:36:48.20 I'm trying to think of how to best go about it. 00:36:48.24\00:36:50.41 We have a, for the outreach, 00:36:50.44\00:36:54.48 we have a deaf Bible school 00:36:54.51\00:36:56.98 that people can study on the internet or by mail 00:36:57.01\00:37:01.75 and also in sign language. 00:37:01.78\00:37:03.12 When you say it's a deaf Bible school, 00:37:03.15\00:37:04.49 that's interesting, if it's on the internet. 00:37:04.52\00:37:05.85 So do we... 00:37:05.89\00:37:07.42 Do you have materials on there that might... 00:37:07.46\00:37:10.33 How can I say this? 00:37:10.36\00:37:11.69 That might simplify, I mean, if their language 00:37:11.73\00:37:15.90 doesn't accommodate most of those words, 00:37:15.93\00:37:17.83 are you taking that and writing it in English 00:37:17.87\00:37:21.60 in such a style that 00:37:21.64\00:37:24.47 it's easier for them to understand? 00:37:24.51\00:37:25.84 Yes. Okay. 00:37:25.87\00:37:27.21 Yes. It is in simpler English. 00:37:27.24\00:37:29.64 We have several different tracks. 00:37:29.68\00:37:31.58 One for example is Amazing Facts. 00:37:31.61\00:37:34.12 We've taken their studies, they've been very gracious 00:37:34.15\00:37:36.35 and allowed us to simplify it to much easier English 00:37:36.38\00:37:39.89 but they still struggle, some people do. 00:37:39.92\00:37:42.22 And so what they want to do is study in person one on one. 00:37:42.26\00:37:45.76 And so we have Bible instructors 00:37:45.79\00:37:47.80 that will actually use a video phone 00:37:47.83\00:37:51.23 which is, you know, is just mainly on laptop 00:37:51.27\00:37:54.04 with, you know, it basically looks like a laptop. 00:37:54.07\00:37:56.54 It's just a monitor 00:37:56.57\00:37:57.94 and they'll dialogue back and forth face to face 00:37:57.97\00:38:00.81 and they'll study the Bible together. 00:38:00.84\00:38:04.41 They find that that's how they can best understand 00:38:04.45\00:38:07.92 but the ones that feel more comfortable with English, 00:38:07.95\00:38:10.32 they will go ahead and use the website or do it by mail 00:38:10.35\00:38:14.22 because some people just prefer it that way. 00:38:14.26\00:38:17.06 We also have created DVDs. 00:38:17.09\00:38:20.66 Closed captioned, no doubt. 00:38:20.70\00:38:22.36 But actually we have subtitles some, 00:38:22.40\00:38:25.33 but they're all in sign language. 00:38:25.37\00:38:26.70 Oh, they're on sign language... 00:38:26.74\00:38:28.07 They are in sign language. It's wonderful. 00:38:28.10\00:38:29.94 We have created quite a few. 00:38:29.97\00:38:32.21 I think we have some pictures of... 00:38:32.24\00:38:35.44 There I am. 00:38:35.48\00:38:36.81 I'm signing a presentation actually with creationism 00:38:36.85\00:38:40.12 and whether or not there are evidences of God 00:38:40.15\00:38:42.52 creating the earth or at least the flood. 00:38:42.55\00:38:46.29 And so we're looking at some layers there 00:38:46.32\00:38:49.72 and there's not a resource for deaf people 00:38:49.76\00:38:52.49 on evidences of the big flood or evidences of, 00:38:52.53\00:38:58.43 you know, the God's design. 00:38:58.47\00:39:00.00 And so, you know, 00:39:00.04\00:39:01.70 I was thinking about one day... 00:39:01.74\00:39:03.07 I said, there's nothing up there for deaf people 00:39:03.10\00:39:04.94 and so we use that topic and put it on DVD 00:39:04.97\00:39:08.58 and we distributed it and it was really surprising 00:39:08.61\00:39:13.21 at how many people enjoyed that particular program 00:39:13.25\00:39:15.48 because they had never seen anything like it. 00:39:15.52\00:39:17.09 It is more scientific but we have done 00:39:17.12\00:39:19.39 many different topics on... 00:39:19.42\00:39:22.12 Of the one that was just up on that DVD, 00:39:22.16\00:39:24.43 Signs of God's love. 00:39:24.46\00:39:25.79 Right. That's a great title. 00:39:25.83\00:39:28.10 That a great title. 00:39:28.13\00:39:30.70 And, you know, God has given us the gift of language 00:39:30.73\00:39:33.10 in order to convey God's glory. 00:39:33.13\00:39:36.00 And so that's what we wanted to do was sign 00:39:36.04\00:39:38.44 about God's love and tell people about it. 00:39:38.47\00:39:41.18 So we have created a number of DVDs 00:39:41.21\00:39:43.01 in sign language about different topics 00:39:43.04\00:39:45.01 and then we go to different events 00:39:45.05\00:39:47.88 such as deaf expos. 00:39:47.92\00:39:49.25 There's been quite a few over the years. 00:39:49.28\00:39:51.52 Usually there's about 15 a year somewhere in the United States, 00:39:51.55\00:39:54.49 a big metro areas 00:39:54.52\00:39:56.83 and deaf people from all over will flock. 00:39:56.86\00:39:59.73 Sometimes there's as many as 5,000 deaf people 00:39:59.76\00:40:01.96 at such an event. 00:40:02.00\00:40:03.33 Sometimes not that many but we have a booth 00:40:03.37\00:40:05.13 and we distribute those DVDs for free. 00:40:05.17\00:40:07.37 We give them out to as many as we can. 00:40:07.40\00:40:09.90 And every year we usually have a new one. 00:40:09.94\00:40:12.87 And sometimes those repeat. 00:40:12.91\00:40:14.61 I mean, some of those booths we're at repeat cities. 00:40:14.64\00:40:17.31 It is so wonderful because I started developing 00:40:17.35\00:40:19.41 some relationships with these people. 00:40:19.45\00:40:21.28 And they'll come and they'll get so excited, 00:40:21.32\00:40:23.08 they said, "I love your DVDs." 00:40:23.12\00:40:24.72 They've even copied them personally 00:40:24.75\00:40:26.32 and distributed it among their friends. 00:40:26.35\00:40:28.29 And it doesn't matter what faith they have, 00:40:28.32\00:40:32.06 they are just so excited, 00:40:32.09\00:40:34.36 they don't care if they're Baptists and I'm not 00:40:34.40\00:40:37.83 or if they're Lutheran and I'm not. 00:40:37.87\00:40:39.97 They're just so excited that 00:40:40.00\00:40:41.34 there are materials in sign language 00:40:41.37\00:40:44.64 because those resources are very few. 00:40:44.67\00:40:47.58 And so they will share it with their friends. 00:40:47.61\00:40:50.58 So that's an opportunity that we have, 00:40:50.61\00:40:52.41 we can give it to one and they'll share it 00:40:52.45\00:40:53.95 with others. 00:40:53.98\00:40:57.32 And... 00:40:57.35\00:40:59.79 I'm trying to think of... 00:40:59.82\00:41:02.69 In as I mentioned the deaf members, 00:41:02.72\00:41:05.59 they need nurture too 00:41:05.63\00:41:07.10 because they need someone to support them 00:41:07.13\00:41:09.06 and that's something that we do as well. 00:41:09.10\00:41:10.43 Or using baptisms through 00:41:10.47\00:41:12.23 Three Angels Deaf Ministries Outreach? 00:41:12.27\00:41:14.87 We are in every... 00:41:14.90\00:41:16.87 This ministry is a ministry that reminds you of 00:41:16.91\00:41:19.74 how precious each person is. 00:41:19.77\00:41:22.98 And I think that sometimes we get swept up in the numbers, 00:41:23.01\00:41:26.08 you know, 10,000 baptized over here 00:41:26.11\00:41:28.35 or 100 over there, we get so excited 00:41:28.38\00:41:31.09 but these baptisms remind us the value of one person 00:41:31.12\00:41:35.72 and that's what I love about deaf ministry. 00:41:35.76\00:41:40.06 We have a speaker director at Three Angels Deaf Ministries 00:41:40.10\00:41:44.30 and he goes around the country from time to time 00:41:44.33\00:41:46.77 and he does evangelism meetings, 00:41:46.80\00:41:48.30 trying to bring people to know who Jesus is. 00:41:48.34\00:41:50.91 And, yes, we have had seen some baptisms. 00:41:50.94\00:41:54.24 I think of such an event in Fresno, California 00:41:54.28\00:41:58.25 and three deaf people were baptized 00:41:58.28\00:42:00.45 and some people may say, "Oh, that's not a large number." 00:42:00.48\00:42:03.79 But we're thinking that's three souls 00:42:03.82\00:42:05.75 that have come to know God. 00:42:05.79\00:42:07.69 And I had the picture of this man being baptized 00:42:07.72\00:42:12.19 and he comes up out, you know, he is just so happy... 00:42:12.23\00:42:14.26 Oh, look at that joy on his face. 00:42:14.30\00:42:16.46 Oh, he is so happy. 00:42:16.50\00:42:18.00 And he's been such a faithful Christian ever since. 00:42:18.03\00:42:21.40 I mean, he just loves God with all his heart. 00:42:21.44\00:42:24.01 And that's what it's all about. 00:42:24.04\00:42:26.68 Amen. Amen. 00:42:26.71\00:42:28.04 So who is your donor base for Three Angels Deaf Ministries? 00:42:28.08\00:42:34.22 Three Angels Deaf Ministries is donor supported 00:42:34.25\00:42:37.39 and most of those donors are deaf themselves. 00:42:37.42\00:42:40.19 It shows you their appreciation for your ministry. 00:42:40.22\00:42:42.52 Absolutely. 00:42:42.56\00:42:43.89 They see the value of that ministry 00:42:43.93\00:42:45.43 and they do appreciate it as well. 00:42:45.46\00:42:47.40 And they think if I can support this ministry, 00:42:47.43\00:42:50.00 I can help my friends know who Jesus is. 00:42:50.03\00:42:52.93 And that is something that we notice. 00:42:52.97\00:42:57.01 We also work very closely 00:42:57.04\00:42:58.37 with the North American division. 00:42:58.41\00:42:59.74 There are some projects that they have funded 00:42:59.77\00:43:01.64 and we deeply appreciate that relationship 00:43:01.68\00:43:04.75 because North American division while I do work 00:43:04.78\00:43:07.38 for the division as the coordinator. 00:43:07.42\00:43:10.62 My position is very new, 00:43:10.65\00:43:12.25 and we don't have those types of resources, 00:43:12.29\00:43:14.42 so we can work with Three Angels Deaf Ministries 00:43:14.46\00:43:16.46 who do provide those things. 00:43:16.49\00:43:18.16 Now you also work with, I mean, personally you work 00:43:18.19\00:43:20.76 with Three Angels Deaf Ministries as... 00:43:20.80\00:43:22.30 I do. I do. 00:43:22.33\00:43:23.77 What marketing or...? 00:43:23.80\00:43:25.20 I do public relations. Public relations. 00:43:25.23\00:43:27.27 Okay. Okay. 00:43:27.30\00:43:28.64 So if people, 00:43:28.67\00:43:31.21 you are a non-profit organization, 00:43:31.24\00:43:36.04 tax exempt, donor supported 00:43:36.08\00:43:39.58 and you are supporting ministry 00:43:39.61\00:43:41.65 of the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:43:41.68\00:43:44.12 so we are going to put their address up 00:43:44.15\00:43:46.76 in just a moment. 00:43:46.79\00:43:48.29 If you want to get in touch with them or make a donation, 00:43:48.32\00:43:51.83 we'd like to make that information available 00:43:51.86\00:43:54.66 but our time is kind of winding down. 00:43:54.70\00:43:58.90 I'd like you to spend these few moments 00:43:58.93\00:44:02.60 telling us what we can do as Christians, 00:44:02.64\00:44:08.88 hearing Christians? 00:44:08.91\00:44:10.88 What can we do to reach out? 00:44:10.91\00:44:13.82 Because, you know, when you said that, 00:44:13.85\00:44:15.38 "If a deaf person comes and you hug them 00:44:15.42\00:44:18.45 and show him you love them," 00:44:18.49\00:44:20.36 but if you can't communicate... 00:44:20.39\00:44:22.89 Do many people that are deaf read lips or...? 00:44:22.92\00:44:26.93 Some do. Okay. 00:44:26.96\00:44:28.50 And some... 00:44:28.53\00:44:30.30 Some do very well and some do some. 00:44:30.33\00:44:32.87 And so they may tell you that they can't 00:44:32.90\00:44:35.80 because they don't want people to feel like, 00:44:35.84\00:44:37.37 "Oh well, then we'll just do this, 00:44:37.41\00:44:39.87 you just read my lips" 00:44:39.91\00:44:41.24 because some don't feel comfortable. 00:44:41.28\00:44:42.91 Only 30% of English is actually legible on the lips. 00:44:42.94\00:44:46.58 See that's what when the lady I worked with went deaf 00:44:46.61\00:44:50.62 when she was about a year old 00:44:50.65\00:44:52.49 and her parents were among those who, you know, 00:44:52.52\00:44:55.92 they thought it better not to learn to sign. 00:44:55.96\00:44:58.36 Right. And they... 00:44:58.39\00:45:00.90 She was totally deaf but she did speak, I mean, she, 00:45:00.93\00:45:04.60 her sister actually became a speech therapist 00:45:04.63\00:45:06.74 but she spoke pretty well. 00:45:06.77\00:45:09.20 I mean, she would go through... 00:45:09.24\00:45:12.57 What you want to say, refresher courses 00:45:12.61\00:45:14.61 in speech therapy each year. 00:45:14.64\00:45:16.71 So that she could maintain her speech 00:45:16.75\00:45:19.15 and she was married to a hearing man 00:45:19.18\00:45:22.15 but most Americans, even the Europeans 00:45:22.18\00:45:26.35 will say that we have lazy lips. 00:45:26.39\00:45:29.06 You know and dump, so I learned to really enunciate 00:45:29.09\00:45:35.10 and move my lips almost in a dramatic fashion 00:45:35.13\00:45:38.77 which I can't, I can't quit doing that. 00:45:38.80\00:45:41.57 It's just ingrained in me now. 00:45:41.60\00:45:43.57 But what can we do because if you don't feel 00:45:43.61\00:45:47.84 you can communicate it is off putting to... 00:45:47.88\00:45:53.52 I don't want... 00:45:53.55\00:45:54.88 It is off putting, I'll just leave it that way. 00:45:54.92\00:45:57.15 It is. It's very difficult. 00:45:57.19\00:45:59.39 One thing that some people can do 00:45:59.42\00:46:00.99 is go ahead and contact Three Angels Deaf Ministries 00:46:01.02\00:46:04.06 because we'd like to help people 00:46:04.09\00:46:06.59 to give them ideas 00:46:06.63\00:46:07.96 because everybody has a different scenario 00:46:08.00\00:46:10.27 and we can share some ideas and some resources 00:46:10.30\00:46:12.37 that might work for them. 00:46:12.40\00:46:13.74 So that is one thing that can be done. 00:46:13.77\00:46:15.37 Secondly is... 00:46:15.40\00:46:19.14 we have to get past the fear. 00:46:19.17\00:46:20.94 One thing I think that as Americans 00:46:20.98\00:46:22.81 talking about our culture here, is we have been taught 00:46:22.84\00:46:26.95 to not stare or point at someone 00:46:26.98\00:46:29.35 that we think is different than us. 00:46:29.38\00:46:31.85 And so what has happened is 00:46:31.89\00:46:33.22 that we've learned to avoid them 00:46:33.25\00:46:35.46 and there is a difference between gawking and avoiding. 00:46:35.49\00:46:41.60 And so what we need to do is break down that fear 00:46:41.63\00:46:46.50 because perfect love caste it out all fear. 00:46:46.53\00:46:49.60 And so we need to get past that 00:46:49.64\00:46:52.04 and recognize that person is a child of God 00:46:52.07\00:46:54.28 who needs a friend. 00:46:54.31\00:46:55.84 And just figure it out. 00:46:55.88\00:46:59.21 You know, just ask questions, deaf people as I said 00:46:59.25\00:47:02.22 are so used to living in a world that hears. 00:47:02.25\00:47:04.72 And so what you do is just ask them. 00:47:04.75\00:47:06.72 What, do you read lips? 00:47:06.76\00:47:09.59 Would you want to write? 00:47:09.62\00:47:12.33 You know, some people actually use their cell phones, 00:47:12.36\00:47:16.20 you know, they sometimes they can text on that 00:47:16.23\00:47:18.40 or, you know, how do you want to communicate, 00:47:18.43\00:47:20.77 ask them and they will tell you. 00:47:20.80\00:47:22.34 Okay. 00:47:22.37\00:47:24.47 And just, you know, 00:47:24.51\00:47:26.14 if you have a deaf person in your church, 00:47:26.17\00:47:29.44 don't be afraid to invite them to your home for a dinner. 00:47:29.48\00:47:32.81 Invite them to events, some parties or games, 00:47:32.85\00:47:34.92 whatever it may be that the church does 00:47:34.95\00:47:36.79 as a group or privately in homes. 00:47:36.82\00:47:39.35 Go ahead and include them because 00:47:39.39\00:47:40.72 they are part of the church family. 00:47:40.76\00:47:42.09 Amen. Amen. 00:47:42.12\00:47:43.96 I was just thinking that. 00:47:43.99\00:47:46.70 I make it a point to... 00:47:46.73\00:47:50.67 I had injured my foot once 00:47:50.70\00:47:53.64 and I was in a wheelchair. 00:47:53.67\00:47:55.67 And it was interesting because I had to fly out to speak 00:47:55.70\00:47:59.87 and being wheeled from, you know, the ticket counter 00:47:59.91\00:48:04.88 to where you were going to board the plane, 00:48:04.91\00:48:07.58 I was interested in how people would avoid looking at you. 00:48:07.62\00:48:11.85 Wow! 00:48:11.89\00:48:13.22 And so I've made it a point 00:48:13.25\00:48:15.26 to really make people in wheelchairs 00:48:15.29\00:48:19.79 feel noticed and say hi. 00:48:19.83\00:48:22.43 And I'm surprised how often they thank me for that saying, 00:48:22.46\00:48:25.73 "thank you," because they do feel marginalized 00:48:25.77\00:48:28.70 and you're right, we have been taught 00:48:28.74\00:48:31.37 not to gawk at those who are different 00:48:31.41\00:48:35.31 but we also need to remember that everybody is human 00:48:35.34\00:48:38.25 and needs a human touch in their life. 00:48:38.28\00:48:39.71 Indeed, and how much they can bless us. 00:48:39.75\00:48:42.58 You know, when we are afraid to make friends with people 00:48:42.62\00:48:46.69 because of whatever reason. 00:48:46.72\00:48:48.39 We miss out on the blessing of that relationship 00:48:48.42\00:48:51.26 and it can be a huge blessing that we're missing out on. 00:48:51.29\00:48:55.10 And so that's something that... 00:48:55.13\00:48:58.27 All my life I've been a bridge builder 00:48:58.30\00:48:59.80 trying to help hearing people and deaf people 00:48:59.83\00:49:02.20 to come together. 00:49:02.24\00:49:03.57 And it's been an interesting experience 00:49:03.61\00:49:06.61 because sometimes that's difficult 00:49:06.64\00:49:08.38 and other times it's not as hard as some people think. 00:49:08.41\00:49:10.85 So it's been a fun life, long journey. 00:49:10.88\00:49:14.58 Well, what we want to do is put your address up 00:49:14.62\00:49:18.05 because surely many of you who are watching 00:49:18.09\00:49:21.86 know someone who is deaf 00:49:21.89\00:49:23.99 or may be just severely hearing impaired 00:49:24.03\00:49:26.83 and having a difficult time in their spiritual life 00:49:26.86\00:49:30.83 because of it and I'm just thinking of Isaiah 29:18, 00:49:30.87\00:49:35.27 where it says, "In that day that deaf shall hear 00:49:35.30\00:49:38.27 the words of the book." 00:49:38.31\00:49:40.61 How blessed we are to be able to hear the words of the book. 00:49:40.64\00:49:45.05 How blessed we are that we have so many resources 00:49:45.08\00:49:49.25 available to us but maybe you need to get in touch 00:49:49.28\00:49:53.29 with Three Angels Deaf Ministries 00:49:53.32\00:49:56.09 and check out some of their resources, 00:49:56.12\00:49:58.36 talk to someone there that they can give you advice 00:49:58.39\00:50:02.40 on what to do in your church situation. 00:50:02.43\00:50:05.50 And do you whole sign... 00:50:05.53\00:50:07.97 Is there American Sign Language training sessions anywhere? 00:50:08.00\00:50:12.21 How do people even learn that? That's a very good question. 00:50:12.24\00:50:15.08 Right now our ministry doesn't actually 00:50:15.11\00:50:16.44 provide training 00:50:16.48\00:50:17.81 but we are still working on putting religious signs 00:50:17.85\00:50:20.98 on our website. 00:50:21.02\00:50:22.35 So that way people can go there and learn 00:50:22.38\00:50:23.72 how to sign certain words. 00:50:23.75\00:50:27.92 The best way to learn sign language is in a... 00:50:27.96\00:50:31.49 One on one setting 00:50:31.53\00:50:33.09 like a deaf person could teach you 00:50:33.13\00:50:36.26 how to sign the classroom setting. 00:50:36.30\00:50:39.27 I love a classroom setting because it seems like 00:50:39.30\00:50:41.24 all the barriers are brought down 00:50:41.27\00:50:42.84 and as you, if someone makes a mistake 00:50:42.87\00:50:45.57 then everybody remembers that mistake 00:50:45.61\00:50:47.64 and they learn from that, and in a classroom setting 00:50:47.68\00:50:50.28 there is no such thing as mistakes. 00:50:50.31\00:50:52.28 There's a learning process and it's a lot of fun. 00:50:52.31\00:50:55.05 Trying to learn from a book is the worst way 00:50:55.08\00:50:58.12 to learn how to sign. 00:50:58.15\00:50:59.55 DVDs are a little bit better. You can go online and get DVDs. 00:50:59.59\00:51:03.29 You can actually go online and there's free programs 00:51:03.32\00:51:06.70 that are available. 00:51:06.73\00:51:08.06 You can just Google online American Sign Language 00:51:08.10\00:51:11.73 and you'd be surprised at what will come up. 00:51:11.77\00:51:13.77 Okay, wonderful. 00:51:13.80\00:51:15.20 Well, we need put up their information 00:51:15.24\00:51:17.61 if you feel that you'd like to contact them 00:51:17.64\00:51:21.14 or perhaps the Holy Spirit is impressing you 00:51:21.18\00:51:23.88 to support this ministry. 00:51:23.91\00:51:25.85 Here's how you can get in touch with them. 00:51:25.88\00:51:29.68 Three Angels Deaf Ministries shares Jesus with deaf people, 00:51:29.72\00:51:33.42 teaching them what the Bible says 00:51:33.46\00:51:35.29 and nurturing deaf church members 00:51:35.32\00:51:37.33 to be true disciples of Christ. 00:51:37.36\00:51:39.63 They also work to educate those who hear 00:51:39.66\00:51:42.46 about deaf ministry and culture. 00:51:42.50\00:51:44.87 Visit their website 3ADM.org. 00:51:44.90\00:51:48.97 Or call them at (301)-850-0542. 00:51:49.00\00:51:55.14 You may also write to them at Three Angels Deaf Ministries, 00:51:55.18\00:51:59.48 PO Box 1946, 00:51:59.51\00:52:03.08 Greenbelt, Maryland 20768. 00:52:03.12\00:52:07.66 You know, perhaps you want to contact them 00:52:14.76\00:52:16.53 and ask for one of their speakers 00:52:16.56\00:52:18.23 to come out to your church. 00:52:18.27\00:52:19.97 There's just... 00:52:20.00\00:52:21.34 It's a wonderful source for materials, 00:52:21.37\00:52:25.74 for the deaf and support for the deaf. 00:52:25.77\00:52:27.78 So what we're going to do now, Esther, 00:52:27.81\00:52:29.98 is we're going to take a quick break 00:52:30.01\00:52:32.25 and go to a news break 00:52:32.28\00:52:35.18 and then we'll come back with a final thought. 00:52:35.22\00:52:37.75
