world like growing up?

Well, my parents are both deaf.

And I thought that
was a very normal family,

a very average family.

And I learned to sign
when I was just months old.

My Mom and Dad didn't
speak and they would sign to me

as just like a
mother would coo her baby.

She would sign to me.
She'd go, "Oh, you're so cute."

And that was my language.

And I thought that everyone
should know sign language.

So as I grew up and I
was about five years old,

I went to the
kindergarten registration,

I saw that other
people around me,

all these adults
could speak in here,

and I thought
there was something wrong

with all of those people

deaf when you grow up.

But, yes, my Mom and
Dad, they both were...

My Dad was born deaf,
and my mom lost her hearing

when she was only 18 months
old and so that's all they knew

world in sign language,

and it's a beautiful,

beautiful heritage
for me to also have.

I can imagine that.

till right now, it
makes me a stupid question.

and there is abstract of course,

It is so different than English.

grammar is different.

Of course, it's not a
sign for every English word.

It's its own language.

And so when you have

accustomed to just signing,

My Mom was Adventist
when she was in her 30s.

That's when she was baptized.

And she learned about the
truth through her deaf friends

who were also...

You know going to
church she really struggled

because she had a hard
time understanding the Bible.

And when her friends
came and stayed with her,

they would have to
explain what those words meant.

Some of the Bibles were
written in a higher grade level

and, you know, like
the King James Version

uses words that are not
used the same way today anyway.

And then there are other words

that just doesn't
seem to make sense,

so my Mom, her Bible,

even today she would take a word

that she didn't understand.

She would circle that
word and put a definition,

Her Bible is just covered
with those kind of definitions.

And we've had

and she would do the same thing.

And I now have them
and they're precious to me.

much effort she put into

understand a sentence

So, yeah, it was
very hard for them

was a good teacher to me,

She knew the basic
concept of salvation,

and she just wanted me to know
that Jesus was my best friend,

and I just grew up
loving Jesus with all my heart.

And so I can't tell you

when that
realization came to me,

and I can tell you
when I slipped away

and came back.

very small country church.

there, very small church.

And as I was sitting there,
honestly I was quite bored

and I was trying to be blessed.

thinking about my Mom and Dad,

there trying to quietly sign

if you will, trying
to keep their signs low

so it wouldn't be
distracting to other people,

and they were
signing back and forth.

And I looked at
them and I thought,

you know, I may be bored.

But my Mom and Dad
can't hear what's being said,

at least I can,

and the more I thought about it,

the more horrible I felt

realized the only reason

But I wanted to so
much but I was also very shy

but I asked Mom,

interpret that sermon

very difficult sermon.

but I tried my best.

And my Mom, she just sat there

with tears
coming out of her eyes

because that was
my heart's desire,

and the Lord just spoke
to my heart at that time

Now who are the deaf?

It's a simple answer
but it can be complicated,

There are two
groups of deaf people.

their hearing later in life

the deaf community
