and that's when I
heard the Adventist message

And my life was
turned upside down

but in a great way.

learning curve trajectory

that, I also realized,

The wilderness years

I let the devil plant
seeds in my heart of negativity,

pessimism and doubt.

And I began questioning that
God really call us to ministry,

we're supposed to be?

And I would come home
from class in the afternoon,

and I would say, "Plant
these seeds in her mind.

call us to ministry?"

And I specifically
remember one afternoon,

I started in all
my negativity again.

And I remember, she
couldn't take it anymore.

She just screamed at me

and ran and locked herself
in the bathroom for two hours

and wouldn't talk to me.

So I'm sorry if you
thought pastors' wives

and pastors were perfect.

Now he said,
Marquita, you scream?

Yeah, I did.

Because it was hard, you know,
for someone who was following

what she thought was
God's call in her husband's life

and her life,
to hear me say that

and it wasn't long after that

that I called the
Conference president up

and said, "I'm sorry.

You made a mistake.

call us to ministry."

It was very difficult.

two years of our marriage.

You know, he was
already in a good position

with the work, he
was doing at the time,

I had started my
career as a nurse,

was in a very good
position where I was.

But then as he said,
the Lord opened this door,

sponsorship, I could see,

"Yes, this is what
the Lord wants us to do."

So I was okay with
leaving everything behind,

going to
seminary, I was excited.

But we got there,
found a place to live,

he started classes and
I remember, he's right.

He would come
home and he'd just...

It would be
little things at first,

just complaining about
this, complaining about that.

And I kept trying to
encourage him saying, "Its okay.
00:18:53.36\00:18:56.03
You know, just remember,

this is what the
Lord has called us to do."

But he just...

It kept getting worse and worse.

And you know,
after a while, you know,

I have a pretty
good measure of patience,

but after a while when I saw
that it wasn't just complaining

but I could actually see
him going into a depression,

and it was starting
to scare me a little bit

because we had no
reinforcements around us.

You know, both
families are far away,

didn't know anybody at
seminary when we got there.

So it became a very
lonely type feeling.

And so yes, there came
a day when he came home.

And I finally, I
was like, "This is it.

I can't take this anymore."

And I think that scared him

because it was
the first I was like,

"I don't want to hear any
more from you about this."

But as he said, he just
decided he couldn't continue.

And he called in,
so we ended up packing

and going back to Pennsylvania.

And that was very difficult.

the way you planned for future.

And he just keeps
telling me, "You're not worthy."

And I just came to a

and I just fell
on my knees and said,

I made a terrible mistake.

But God really taught me
