Good to have you here, man. 00:02:35.62\00:02:37.55 Thank you. Good to be here too. 00:02:37.59\00:02:40.16 This, first of all, is a neat guy. 00:02:40.22\00:02:41.72 He's still a relatively young. 00:02:41.76\00:02:43.32 I'm not going to ask you how old. 00:02:43.39\00:02:44.73 I'd say somewhere between 20 and 30, I would suspect. 00:02:44.76\00:02:48.16 But a lot has happened in those years. 00:02:48.20\00:02:50.50 And God has taken you to and through a lot of stuff, 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.30 a lot of stuff. 00:02:53.37\00:02:54.70 Amen. Yeah. 00:02:54.74\00:02:56.07 You are a native, I can say, of Haiti? 00:02:56.10\00:02:57.44 Yes. 00:02:57.47\00:02:58.81 And where in Haiti were you born? 00:02:58.84\00:03:00.24 I was in born in Petit-Goave 00:03:00.28\00:03:01.61 which is the soft part of Haiti. 00:03:01.64\00:03:03.55 But I grew up in Port-au-Prince. 00:03:03.58\00:03:06.72 You left the island just before that big earthquake 00:03:06.75\00:03:09.95 that we... 00:03:09.98\00:03:12.02 That dominated the news so much so many years ago, 00:03:12.05\00:03:14.46 but you got out just what? 00:03:14.49\00:03:15.82 A week before, two weeks before? 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.23 A week actually. That was exactly one week. 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.43 I came on Tuesday in United States. 00:03:19.46\00:03:21.53 Tuesday, January 5, 2012, 00:03:21.56\00:03:24.37 and on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, 00:03:24.40\00:03:28.17 that was the earthquake. 00:03:28.20\00:03:29.54 So basically, exactly one week. Wow! 00:03:29.57\00:03:31.84 Praise the Lord that you got out 00:03:31.87\00:03:33.21 and you got out safe. 00:03:33.24\00:03:36.21 In the chair next to you is a trumpet. 00:03:36.24\00:03:39.21 And on the floor, in the front of that trumpet 00:03:39.25\00:03:42.12 is a flugelhorn. 00:03:42.15\00:03:44.72 Yes. 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.09 So you play them both? 00:03:46.12\00:03:47.46 Yes. Yes, yes. 00:03:47.52\00:03:48.86 Now let's deal with the elephant in the room 00:03:48.89\00:03:50.23 just now because we've got to work our way 00:03:50.26\00:03:51.76 through this burden of chance. 00:03:51.79\00:03:53.76 Carlot has one hour, and you would not think that 00:03:53.80\00:03:56.80 a person could be so proficient on these 00:03:56.83\00:03:59.37 two particular instruments not having two arms to play. 00:03:59.40\00:04:03.91 But he does play them, 00:04:03.94\00:04:05.27 and he plays them exceedingly well. 00:04:05.31\00:04:07.48 And we're going to talk about that. 00:04:07.51\00:04:09.31 But I want to go back, man, to your growing up days 00:04:09.34\00:04:14.32 and kind of walk through this whole experience. 00:04:14.35\00:04:18.49 Talk to me about your home growing up, 00:04:18.52\00:04:19.92 brothers and sisters. 00:04:19.95\00:04:21.39 Yes, I do have brothers and sisters. 00:04:21.42\00:04:24.23 I have five siblings. 00:04:24.26\00:04:25.86 I have three brothers and two sisters. 00:04:25.89\00:04:28.00 Wow. 00:04:28.03\00:04:30.63 But of course, growing up, I have a stepfather as well. 00:04:30.67\00:04:34.44 I had a stepfather. 00:04:34.47\00:04:36.04 Because growing up, my mother 00:04:36.07\00:04:39.94 and my father were not married. 00:04:39.97\00:04:44.98 But my mum... 00:04:45.01\00:04:47.22 My mother realized that my father has a wife. 00:04:47.28\00:04:51.19 So that led to this connection between those two. 00:04:51.22\00:04:55.39 And later on 00:04:55.42\00:04:59.89 during this Christmas vacation, 00:04:59.96\00:05:03.06 I keep asking my mother to take me to my grandmother, 00:05:03.10\00:05:06.40 to spend the vacation. 00:05:06.43\00:05:08.04 Because I think, at that point, probably kids, 00:05:08.07\00:05:10.81 love to spend vacation with their grandma 00:05:10.84\00:05:12.51 because grandma spoils kids. 00:05:12.54\00:05:15.61 But at this point, I need to stop you... 00:05:15.64\00:05:17.38 This was not an Adventist home just yet? 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.38 No, that was not an Adventist home yet. 00:05:19.41\00:05:20.92 Okay. 00:05:20.95\00:05:22.52 And at that point, when I get there, 00:05:22.55\00:05:25.22 and then that's how also I lost my arm because I fell 00:05:25.25\00:05:29.26 and I broke my arm... 00:05:29.29\00:05:30.76 Basically, it was my wrist. 00:05:30.83\00:05:33.06 At your grandma's? At grandma. 00:05:33.09\00:05:37.47 But my grandmother, at that point thought 00:05:37.53\00:05:39.77 if my mother knew that my mother will be stressed, 00:05:39.80\00:05:43.14 so she's trying to avoid all the stress on my mother 00:05:43.17\00:05:48.98 and decided to hide it from my mother 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.98 and then tried to see if my arm could be healed 00:05:52.01\00:05:55.05 without letting my mother know. 00:05:55.08\00:05:57.45 And she took me to a leaves doctor... 00:05:57.49\00:05:59.79 Leaves doctor, who will... 00:05:59.82\00:06:01.86 I mean, that thing in United States will 00:06:01.89\00:06:04.06 basically say it's an herbal doctor. 00:06:04.09\00:06:07.30 People who use leaves and natural medicine. 00:06:07.36\00:06:09.86 Now although some of them may have some connection 00:06:09.90\00:06:14.54 with may probably voodoo. 00:06:14.57\00:06:18.04 And after 14 days, when the leaves doctor 00:06:18.07\00:06:22.01 or herbal doctor put some stuff on my arm, after 14 days, 00:06:22.04\00:06:27.42 my uncle realized that my arm started to smell. 00:06:27.45\00:06:32.05 And they decided right away, 00:06:32.09\00:06:34.19 they have to take me to the emergency. 00:06:34.26\00:06:36.76 Now you were how old about this time? 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.39 I was four years and a half. 00:06:38.43\00:06:40.10 Do you remember any of this? Or this... 00:06:40.13\00:06:41.63 You're recalling this as it was told to you? 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.03 I remember some of the stuff because 00:06:43.06\00:06:45.23 I can remember before I fell... 00:06:45.27\00:06:51.74 My cousin was on a horse, and basically, 00:06:51.77\00:06:56.18 me and my cousin were playing horsey basically. 00:06:56.21\00:06:59.18 Playing horse and then use a stick, 00:06:59.21\00:07:01.12 that was probably a corn stick, and then run, 00:07:01.15\00:07:04.02 and then of course, we could not catch my cousin. 00:07:04.05\00:07:08.89 And there was a tree that looked like a horse. 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.33 And then basically we jump on it 00:07:12.36\00:07:13.73 and try to play horse. 00:07:13.76\00:07:15.46 And she said, "Let's go." 00:07:15.50\00:07:17.27 And I said, "What? Let's play more." 00:07:17.30\00:07:19.70 And there was a plantain tree 00:07:19.73\00:07:23.34 and I jumped on the plantain tree 00:07:23.41\00:07:25.21 and then she pulled my hand. 00:07:25.24\00:07:26.78 And of course, that planted tree is slippery. 00:07:26.81\00:07:28.91 And I fell and I broke my wrist. 00:07:28.94\00:07:30.85 So that's how you broke your wrist. 00:07:30.88\00:07:32.21 Yes. Okay. All right. 00:07:32.25\00:07:33.62 But after 14 days, things that they put in my arm 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.62 probably was a circulation issue 00:07:36.69\00:07:39.79 or maybe it's because things that they put in my arm 00:07:39.82\00:07:43.06 got infected. 00:07:43.09\00:07:44.43 I don't really know. 00:07:44.46\00:07:46.53 But what happened after 14 days, 00:07:46.56\00:07:48.70 they realized that my arm got gangrened, became darker, 00:07:48.73\00:07:54.37 and then started to smell. 00:07:54.40\00:07:55.84 So by the time, we got to the hospital, 00:07:55.87\00:07:59.81 the doctor said two things. 00:07:59.84\00:08:03.24 Of course, they called my mother, 00:08:03.28\00:08:05.08 and the doctor said two things, 00:08:05.11\00:08:08.05 "We have to amputate the arm or he will die." 00:08:08.08\00:08:11.52 So my mother at that point 00:08:11.55\00:08:13.82 was in a very difficult situation. 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.49 Whether she should decide for my life or for the society 00:08:16.52\00:08:23.16 because the society sees you in the different eyes. 00:08:23.20\00:08:26.20 Then your parents of course will. 00:08:26.23\00:08:29.60 So the idea of saving the arm was no longer issue. 00:08:29.64\00:08:32.41 Arm had to go? 00:08:32.44\00:08:33.78 Yes. Okay. 00:08:33.81\00:08:35.14 So her choice is to maim you 00:08:35.18\00:08:41.05 for the rest of your life 00:08:41.08\00:08:42.98 which is going to cause some rejection in the society 00:08:43.02\00:08:45.42 because they don't look at whole children 00:08:45.45\00:08:48.89 like they look at children who are challenged. 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.43 There's going to be some discrimination. 00:08:50.46\00:08:52.56 That's going to last a lifetime. 00:08:52.59\00:08:54.56 Or keep the arm and you die. 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.33 Which is a rough choice. 00:08:57.37\00:09:00.10 Of course, you always choose life, 00:09:00.17\00:09:01.50 and your mom chose... 00:09:01.54\00:09:02.87 Life. She chose life. 00:09:02.90\00:09:04.24 Okay, given the understanding that you're going 00:09:04.27\00:09:07.14 to be challenged for the rest of your life. 00:09:07.21\00:09:11.08 On the heels of that decision, as you got older, 00:09:11.11\00:09:15.38 was that prediction did that come to 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.52 as far as being sort of looked down on 00:09:17.55\00:09:20.09 because you didn't have two arms. 00:09:20.12\00:09:21.46 You weren't like everybody else, 00:09:21.49\00:09:22.82 was that kind of rough? 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.19 It was very rough. 00:09:24.23\00:09:25.56 In fact, the first thing that was pretty rough on me 00:09:25.59\00:09:28.63 that was the decision of my father 00:09:28.66\00:09:31.73 because of the reaction because my father told my mother, 00:09:31.77\00:09:37.21 "I did not have a child with one arm, 00:09:37.24\00:09:38.97 therefore, he is not my child. 00:09:39.01\00:09:40.68 This is your child." 00:09:40.71\00:09:42.41 And at that point, you can understand, 00:09:42.44\00:09:43.78 my mother tried to protect me and not letting me 00:09:43.85\00:09:46.72 know those things. 00:09:46.75\00:09:48.68 But she did some amazing things that I understood later on. 00:09:48.72\00:09:53.86 She never considered me as someone 00:09:53.89\00:09:55.36 with a physical disability. 00:09:55.39\00:09:57.03 Never. 00:09:57.06\00:09:58.39 In fact, when she leaves the house every day, 00:09:58.43\00:10:00.90 if she gives chores in the house, 00:10:00.93\00:10:02.66 she will ask me to do anything as she will ask 00:10:02.70\00:10:05.50 my older brother to do certain things. 00:10:05.53\00:10:07.40 For example, she might have said, 00:10:07.44\00:10:08.77 "Well, you do the bed, or you wash dishes." 00:10:08.80\00:10:11.97 She will make no difference. 00:10:12.01\00:10:13.94 She will just ask me to do something. 00:10:13.98\00:10:16.44 But never question how I am going to do it. 00:10:16.48\00:10:18.68 She let me figure it out. 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.82 And all those things make me feel confident 00:10:20.88\00:10:23.05 that I can accomplish things on my own. 00:10:23.08\00:10:27.36 On your own, yeah. 00:10:27.42\00:10:28.76 So your mom didn't coddle you in any sense 00:10:28.79\00:10:31.56 or leave you lot of time for self-pity. 00:10:31.59\00:10:33.96 She had you and nurtured you just like anybody else. 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.20 In fact, if neighbors try to complain, 00:10:36.23\00:10:38.67 she basically goes after them. 00:10:38.70\00:10:41.94 She goes after them, and then say, 00:10:41.97\00:10:43.34 "Well, this is my son. 00:10:43.37\00:10:45.24 I have to deal with him the way I want." 00:10:45.27\00:10:47.91 Yes. 00:10:47.94\00:10:49.44 So she had a lot of intestinal fortitude. 00:10:49.48\00:10:53.58 I mean, she is really a strong woman. 00:10:53.65\00:10:56.55 So your dad sort of disowned you? 00:10:56.62\00:10:59.22 Yes. 00:10:59.25\00:11:00.66 And left the family? Mm-hm. 00:11:00.69\00:11:02.32 So your mom remarried? 00:11:02.36\00:11:04.56 Well, that's a good question too 00:11:04.59\00:11:05.93 because my stepfather, as I mentioned 00:11:05.96\00:11:08.23 at the very beginning, 00:11:08.26\00:11:10.17 my father never get me with my mother. 00:11:10.23\00:11:12.83 Right. 00:11:12.87\00:11:14.24 However, they would still have communication. 00:11:14.27\00:11:18.41 And I was still young 00:11:18.44\00:11:19.87 but my mum trying to run away from my father 00:11:19.91\00:11:22.98 because she found out that my father has a wife. 00:11:23.01\00:11:26.15 Has a wife, married, yes. 00:11:26.18\00:11:27.52 And my mum was with my father and then that happened 00:11:27.58\00:11:31.79 because they were dating. 00:11:31.82\00:11:35.39 It was a little bit bad because my father 00:11:35.42\00:11:37.49 basically used my mum 00:11:37.53\00:11:40.86 and then my mum got pregnant with that one. 00:11:40.90\00:11:43.50 And so she felt like she has to stay 00:11:43.53\00:11:46.67 in that relationship after being used by my father, 00:11:46.70\00:11:50.54 and also a child came, then I came on in the scene. 00:11:50.57\00:11:56.58 And when she found out that my father has a wife, 00:11:56.61\00:12:01.05 she basically deserted herself from my father. 00:12:01.08\00:12:04.52 But since me and my older brother 00:12:04.55\00:12:06.69 were still connected with my father, 00:12:06.76\00:12:11.19 she will take us see my father 00:12:11.23\00:12:13.80 even when I was four, five, even three. 00:12:13.83\00:12:17.43 But the thing I've never seen 00:12:17.47\00:12:18.93 my father under the same roof with my mother, 00:12:18.97\00:12:21.14 not even one day. 00:12:21.17\00:12:23.37 Yup. I see. 00:12:23.41\00:12:25.27 So once he sort of out of the picture, 00:12:25.31\00:12:30.45 your stepfather comes in. 00:12:30.51\00:12:32.05 And then there are four children by him. 00:12:32.08\00:12:34.28 Right. Yes. Okay. So six in total. 00:12:34.32\00:12:36.95 Yes. Six in total. 00:12:36.99\00:12:39.45 How was your relationship with your stepdad? 00:12:39.49\00:12:43.12 It wasn't... 00:12:43.16\00:12:44.49 At first, it was good, at first, but later on, 00:12:44.53\00:12:48.00 it was not that good because of the way 00:12:48.03\00:12:50.30 he started acting with my mom. 00:12:50.33\00:12:52.57 And in fact, he started to cheat on my mom 00:12:52.60\00:12:57.04 and lead my mom to have some issues 00:12:57.07\00:12:58.74 with some other women. 00:12:58.77\00:13:00.48 And my mum, even actually when she was pregnant, 00:13:00.51\00:13:03.08 has even got to jail because she was fighting 00:13:03.11\00:13:05.78 with another woman that my father 00:13:05.81\00:13:08.02 had some involvement with. 00:13:08.05\00:13:10.59 And that was not really a good picture 00:13:10.62\00:13:12.72 because there was a lot of tension at that point. 00:13:12.75\00:13:16.09 And it was not that good for us but I usually stayed calm, 00:13:16.12\00:13:21.60 never get involve in those things, 00:13:21.63\00:13:23.93 but even later on, my older brother got involved 00:13:23.97\00:13:27.00 because my stepfather would try 00:13:27.04\00:13:28.74 to hit my mom one time. 00:13:28.77\00:13:31.31 And my older brother stepped in. 00:13:31.34\00:13:34.04 And so your stepfather is away. 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.41 How did, Carlot, how did Adventism 00:13:35.44\00:13:38.01 come into the picture? 00:13:38.05\00:13:41.45 In my life, especially that was... 00:13:41.48\00:13:43.89 When I was around six or seven years old 00:13:43.95\00:13:45.62 when my stepfather got married with my mother, 00:13:45.65\00:13:49.86 and we started going to Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:13:49.89\00:13:53.36 but before that, my mom will make us memorize 00:13:53.40\00:13:56.80 Bible verses. 00:13:56.83\00:13:58.73 She was a single mom because she was the one 00:13:58.77\00:14:01.37 who tried to feed us every day therefore, 00:14:01.40\00:14:03.17 she has to go on the street and sell 00:14:03.20\00:14:06.68 so that she can take care of us. 00:14:06.71\00:14:08.14 But we rarely go to church on Sunday. 00:14:08.18\00:14:11.51 So with my stepfather came in, we go to church every Sabbath. 00:14:11.55\00:14:16.18 And we started to know a little bit 00:14:16.22\00:14:17.62 about devotion in the morning. 00:14:17.65\00:14:20.66 But because of difficulties of life, 00:14:20.69\00:14:23.63 I had to go live with my aunt. Oh, boy. 00:14:23.66\00:14:26.59 And I started living with my aunt, 00:14:26.63\00:14:27.96 I got confused at that point. 00:14:27.96\00:14:29.30 I was around 13. 00:14:29.33\00:14:31.07 And because I remember one day, I went to a Bible study 00:14:31.10\00:14:35.67 because I love God, I wanted to do what is right. 00:14:35.70\00:14:38.84 And that was Free Methodist Church. 00:14:38.87\00:14:43.51 And I remember in the Bible study, they say, 00:14:43.55\00:14:45.45 "Well, you don't have to keep the law 00:14:45.48\00:14:47.62 because Moses broke them." 00:14:47.65\00:14:49.72 That was a very hard situation for me. 00:14:49.75\00:14:52.42 And I was confused, and I started praying about it. 00:14:52.45\00:14:55.92 And later on, the same month, I believe and I felt convinced 00:14:55.96\00:15:01.70 to leave my aunt and then go downtown. 00:15:01.73\00:15:06.03 And there was like 00:15:06.07\00:15:08.40 an Evangelist Seventh-day Adventist Church, I heard it. 00:15:08.44\00:15:11.57 And I came in, and I felt so moved. 00:15:11.61\00:15:15.91 I said, "Man, this is my church." 00:15:15.94\00:15:18.58 From that point, 00:15:18.61\00:15:20.62 I tried to not miss any of those nights. 00:15:20.65\00:15:26.42 Now my aunt was not too happy with it. 00:15:26.45\00:15:29.62 Yes. 00:15:29.66\00:15:30.99 And after a few days, I told my aunt, 00:15:31.03\00:15:33.50 "I'm going to get baptized." 00:15:33.53\00:15:35.83 My aunt said, "Which church?" 00:15:35.86\00:15:38.67 I said, "Seventh-day Adventist Church." 00:15:38.70\00:15:40.04 She says, "That's not going to happen." 00:15:40.10\00:15:41.84 And I said, "Well, I understand, Aunt, 00:15:41.87\00:15:43.61 I want to get baptized." 00:15:43.67\00:15:46.01 So now before I get baptized, it was very difficult 00:15:46.04\00:15:48.98 because the Pastor refused me because I was 13. 00:15:49.01\00:15:52.35 Actually, at that point, later on, actually... 00:15:52.38\00:15:55.12 It is that after, later on, that was at 16. 00:15:55.15\00:15:58.02 Okay. I should make sure I explain. 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.89 I was 16 at that time, and I told my aunt 00:15:59.92\00:16:03.39 that I'm going to get baptized. 00:16:03.46\00:16:05.76 Now for most guys, 16 is old enough. 00:16:05.79\00:16:07.73 I was baptized younger than 16. Yes. 00:16:07.76\00:16:09.43 I've been baptized, I think, to a low of 9 or 10. 00:16:09.46\00:16:13.44 But they were pretty selfish children 00:16:13.47\00:16:15.60 and knew what they were getting into for the most part. 00:16:15.64\00:16:18.47 But 16, that's well I suppose. 00:16:18.51\00:16:20.58 When I say 16 and I want to get baptized, my aunt said, 00:16:20.61\00:16:23.95 "That's not going to happen." 00:16:23.98\00:16:25.65 And the Pastor and the people in the church 00:16:25.68\00:16:28.85 wanted to visit with my parents before they even choose me. 00:16:28.88\00:16:32.42 And they call everybody, and then 00:16:32.45\00:16:33.79 I remember they didn't call me. 00:16:33.86\00:16:35.19 I went back and I talked to the Pastor, I said, "Well, 00:16:35.22\00:16:38.63 I don't hear my name, and I sign up." 00:16:38.66\00:16:41.56 And they said, "Well, we have to talk to your parents first." 00:16:41.60\00:16:44.07 I said, "Well, you know what, let me tell you exactly 00:16:44.13\00:16:45.97 what it is. 00:16:46.00\00:16:47.40 I talked to my aunt about it because I'm with my aunt. 00:16:47.44\00:16:50.57 My mom is a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:16:50.61\00:16:52.91 but my aunt said no. 00:16:52.94\00:16:54.68 But please don't reject me 00:16:54.71\00:16:56.91 because I don't want to leave here 00:16:56.95\00:16:58.28 without getting baptized." 00:16:58.31\00:17:00.38 And the Pastors think about it, say, "Well, 00:17:00.45\00:17:03.18 we cannot refuse him." 00:17:03.22\00:17:04.55 All right. "So we have to let him in." 00:17:04.59\00:17:06.49 And after he baptized, he said, "I'm going to pray for you." 00:17:06.52\00:17:10.06 And from that point, when I got back home, 00:17:10.09\00:17:12.69 and I told my aunt, 00:17:12.73\00:17:14.96 "I have to let you know that I got baptized." 00:17:15.00\00:17:17.63 And now she started a new way to persecute me in a way. 00:17:17.67\00:17:22.44 She used to sell stuff in the street, 00:17:22.47\00:17:24.64 and she used to send me buy stuff for her. 00:17:24.67\00:17:27.41 And on the Sabbath morning, she told me, 00:17:27.48\00:17:29.41 "I want you to deliver this merchandise for me 00:17:29.44\00:17:31.51 at that place." 00:17:31.55\00:17:32.98 And I said, "I am sorry. I will not be able to do it. 00:17:33.01\00:17:37.39 And, you know, today is my church 00:17:37.42\00:17:39.59 and it's a Sabbath. 00:17:39.62\00:17:40.96 I will not be able to do it." She said, "What? 00:17:40.99\00:17:42.69 If you don't do it today, you leave the house." 00:17:42.72\00:17:44.23 I said, "Well, you don't have to even repeat it again. 00:17:44.26\00:17:46.70 I'm going to leave today. 00:17:46.73\00:17:48.10 You will not see me after the church." 00:17:48.13\00:17:49.46 Wow. So I left. 00:17:49.50\00:17:50.83 Wow. Wow. 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.20 I left. I went to my mum. 00:17:52.23\00:17:53.60 And my mum was happy as well. 00:17:53.64\00:17:55.00 "You know, you're never too much for me." 00:17:55.04\00:17:58.54 Wow. 00:17:58.57\00:17:59.91 All right, I want to move from that point 00:17:59.94\00:18:05.01 to when you began to pick up an interest 00:18:05.05\00:18:08.32 in musical instruments. 00:18:08.35\00:18:10.22 One would not think, 00:18:10.25\00:18:11.59 particularly this challenging an instrument 00:18:11.62\00:18:15.16 that would be something that you'd gravitate to. 00:18:15.19\00:18:16.96 When did that interest in music start? 00:18:16.99\00:18:19.09 That interest started when I was around seven. 00:18:19.13\00:18:23.13 I remember I was walking in the street, 00:18:23.16\00:18:25.50 that was a Flag Day, probably May 18th 00:18:25.53\00:18:28.10 because that's when we have the Flag Day in Haiti. 00:18:28.14\00:18:30.81 And in the street, I saw a lot of kids, 00:18:30.84\00:18:34.01 even young adults, playing in the band. 00:18:34.08\00:18:37.18 It's like a marching band. And I... 00:18:37.25\00:18:38.85 The first thing that came to mind I said, "Man, 00:18:38.88\00:18:41.52 I wish I could play like those people." 00:18:41.55\00:18:45.05 But the second thought that came was, 00:18:45.09\00:18:47.56 "It's impossible because your mom will not be able 00:18:47.59\00:18:49.76 to afford it." 00:18:49.79\00:18:51.56 So I keep it and I never said anything to my mother. 00:18:51.59\00:18:56.00 But I was in the school, they call St. Vincent's. 00:18:56.03\00:18:58.90 It's a school for people with children with disability. 00:18:58.93\00:19:03.44 But also in that school 00:19:03.47\00:19:07.74 when you get to a certain grades, 00:19:07.78\00:19:09.41 they start you with music. 00:19:09.44\00:19:11.35 And when I get to that grade, I was very excited. 00:19:11.38\00:19:13.65 And I said, "Man, that's going to be it. 00:19:13.68\00:19:15.18 This is it." And very excited. 00:19:15.22\00:19:18.22 So the idea that "I cannot do this" 00:19:18.25\00:19:19.95 was never entered your mind? 00:19:19.99\00:19:22.56 I eliminated that I could not do anything. 00:19:22.59\00:19:24.73 In fact, when someone tells me that I cannot do something 00:19:24.76\00:19:27.40 I start to question why. 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.30 They say that I cannot do certain things... 00:19:29.33\00:19:32.50 I mean, I believe also it's because of the way 00:19:32.53\00:19:34.70 my mum raised me. 00:19:34.74\00:19:36.30 Yes. 00:19:36.34\00:19:37.81 So to finish, at that point, when I get to the class 00:19:37.84\00:19:42.91 and they took everybody and then 00:19:42.94\00:19:44.78 I was left in the class. 00:19:44.81\00:19:46.65 And I start to ask the teacher, I said, "So why I'm not in?" 00:19:46.72\00:19:50.49 She said, "Oh, no. You have one arm. 00:19:50.52\00:19:51.85 You cannot play." 00:19:51.89\00:19:53.86 And I keep asking, and each time they tell that 00:19:53.89\00:19:56.96 I could not, that lead to me question why 00:19:57.03\00:20:01.80 and then find a way to prove them wrong. 00:20:01.83\00:20:04.77 So I asked them for over three years, 00:20:04.80\00:20:08.14 keep asking them. 00:20:08.17\00:20:09.50 And then one day because of my persistence, 00:20:09.54\00:20:11.84 and then someone heard me asking, 00:20:11.87\00:20:13.78 that was another teacher, he said, "Man, you know, 00:20:13.84\00:20:15.64 I think he can play the trumpet. 00:20:15.68\00:20:17.21 Let him try." 00:20:17.25\00:20:19.35 But they give me a trumpet. 00:20:19.38\00:20:20.72 Of course, that trumpet was not a good one 00:20:20.78\00:20:22.28 because it was the one that no one used. 00:20:22.32\00:20:25.35 But in my brain, I said, "Well, this is it. 00:20:25.39\00:20:28.66 You cannot leave that opportunity go. 00:20:28.69\00:20:31.43 You have to do your best to make sure that you make it." 00:20:31.46\00:20:36.40 So when they gave me the trumpet, 00:20:36.43\00:20:37.77 I showed them I could play. 00:20:37.80\00:20:39.13 I said, "Well, I'm going to use my thumb, 00:20:39.17\00:20:40.50 and my baby finger to play it, 00:20:40.57\00:20:42.54 and then use my middle fingers." 00:20:42.57\00:20:44.57 But it was still a challenge. Yes. 00:20:44.61\00:20:46.44 Because that fourth finger and that fifth, 00:20:46.47\00:20:49.14 they kind of connected to each. 00:20:49.18\00:20:51.25 When you move one, the other one tend to move. 00:20:51.28\00:20:53.18 They want to. 00:20:53.21\00:20:54.55 So what I did, I basically tried to stretch 00:20:54.58\00:20:57.65 these two everyday to make sure I have like a big wrench 00:20:57.69\00:21:02.29 to make them independent a little bit. 00:21:02.32\00:21:04.43 So when I get to that point, they let me try. 00:21:04.46\00:21:07.23 But I did have to make a commitment to myself. 00:21:07.30\00:21:09.80 I said, "Well, now this is a first step. 00:21:09.83\00:21:12.50 I better practice more than the other kids." 00:21:12.53\00:21:15.44 Sometimes I will hide myself to practice. 00:21:15.47\00:21:18.21 That's kind of funny because when you think about it, 00:21:18.24\00:21:21.31 I would hide myself. 00:21:21.34\00:21:23.01 I basically, watch every kid, if they practice one hour, 00:21:23.04\00:21:25.58 I will try to practice two. 00:21:25.61\00:21:26.98 Ah, I see. 00:21:27.02\00:21:28.35 Even if that required me to miss a meal, 00:21:28.38\00:21:31.02 I will try to practice two. 00:21:31.05\00:21:32.99 And I made a lot of progress very quick to the point 00:21:33.02\00:21:36.89 they even had me to help my fellow classmates. 00:21:36.93\00:21:41.86 I see. 00:21:41.90\00:21:43.70 So you caught up pretty fast. Oh, yeah. 00:21:43.73\00:21:47.20 And of the two instruments, did you have a favorite? 00:21:47.27\00:21:49.60 The flugelhorn or the trumpet? 00:21:49.64\00:21:51.37 Oh, the flugelhorn was not in the picture at all. 00:21:51.41\00:21:53.21 Okay, so just trumpet at that point. 00:21:53.24\00:21:54.94 It was trumpet. 00:21:54.98\00:21:57.98 But I got the flugelhorn, 00:21:58.01\00:21:59.35 actually just got flugelhorn recently. 00:21:59.38\00:22:02.68 And because when I got Penn State, 00:22:02.72\00:22:04.09 there are certain things that you have to play, 00:22:04.12\00:22:05.45 as a graduate assistant, you have to do certain things, 00:22:05.49\00:22:07.89 so I got in the picture. 00:22:07.92\00:22:09.39 The trumpet was the instrument that I started. 00:22:09.42\00:22:12.56 Now I've got to ask this because 00:22:12.59\00:22:14.56 given the earthquake which was 2010, 00:22:14.56\00:22:20.00 were you making plans to come to the States? 00:22:20.04\00:22:22.10 Did you realize that you needed some stateside training 00:22:22.14\00:22:24.67 to improve your craft, to improve 00:22:24.71\00:22:26.24 what you have selected to do? 00:22:26.27\00:22:27.61 There I believe this is a miracle. 00:22:27.64\00:22:28.98 I'm going to explain why. 00:22:29.01\00:22:32.41 At that point, January 2010, there was a program, 00:22:32.45\00:22:34.95 I knew about the program. 00:22:34.98\00:22:36.38 And I was in the school. 00:22:36.42\00:22:38.29 They did not want me to leave really. 00:22:38.32\00:22:40.92 But I was supposed to be in Scotland for the festival. 00:22:40.96\00:22:45.46 So my preparation... 00:22:45.49\00:22:46.96 I was supposed to prepare to go to that festival 00:22:47.00\00:22:49.76 for the school that I was at. 00:22:49.80\00:22:52.20 But in November, out of the blue, 00:22:52.23\00:22:55.17 and I received that call that said, "Well, 00:22:55.20\00:22:57.34 we're chosen to be in United States 00:22:57.37\00:23:00.91 in the cultural exchange." 00:23:00.98\00:23:02.91 I said, "Well, I'm going." 00:23:02.94\00:23:05.51 So when I got here, the earthquake happened. 00:23:05.55\00:23:09.92 And believe me or not, I do believe if I was in Haiti, 00:23:09.95\00:23:12.42 there was 90% chance, 00:23:12.45\00:23:13.86 if it was not by God's grace, I'll die. 00:23:13.89\00:23:16.49 Because the building that I know for sure at that time 00:23:16.52\00:23:19.36 that I will be is completely destroyed. 00:23:19.39\00:23:22.00 And a lot of people were killed, 00:23:22.03\00:23:23.37 people that I know died. 00:23:23.43\00:23:26.70 I need to ask you, were you in proficient in trumpet 00:23:26.74\00:23:30.31 before you came to the States or did you sort of 00:23:30.37\00:23:32.77 pick up your craft and improved your craft here? 00:23:32.81\00:23:35.68 Now when I was back home, I used to practice a lot. 00:23:35.71\00:23:38.75 The reason why I wanted to... 00:23:38.78\00:23:41.05 Because I know it was very difficult 00:23:41.08\00:23:42.58 people will look at the way you are, physical disability, 00:23:42.62\00:23:45.25 but I wanted to play in the level 00:23:45.29\00:23:47.66 that people will not see me as if someone 00:23:47.69\00:23:50.49 with a physical disability but for what I can do. 00:23:50.53\00:23:53.16 Therefore, that requirement to practice more. 00:23:53.19\00:23:55.73 So this is a funny story because I remember 00:23:55.76\00:24:01.00 some people used to compare at the end of the trumpet play 00:24:01.04\00:24:03.94 in that school. 00:24:04.01\00:24:06.17 And I felt so bad because I said, "Man, 00:24:06.21\00:24:07.94 if they start comparing me with someone else, 00:24:07.98\00:24:09.71 that's mean if there's an opportunity 00:24:09.74\00:24:11.81 that person will have it," 00:24:11.85\00:24:13.18 because one thing I have to remember, 00:24:13.21\00:24:14.55 I was very poor. 00:24:14.58\00:24:16.22 I was very, very poor. 00:24:16.25\00:24:18.22 There's no way I can make it in the State. 00:24:18.25\00:24:20.96 And they won't... 00:24:20.99\00:24:22.32 If I apply for the visa, they will just deny me. 00:24:22.36\00:24:24.26 So where did you get your initial instruments from? 00:24:24.33\00:24:27.40 Well, this is a good question. 00:24:27.50\00:24:29.13 My initial instruments, what I did... 00:24:29.16\00:24:31.33 There's this professor, he was an American. 00:24:31.37\00:24:34.47 And I saved my pocket money, and then pay him 00:24:34.50\00:24:39.57 like every month, give him little by little, 00:24:39.61\00:24:42.38 little by little until I get my first instrument. 00:24:42.41\00:24:45.38 And after a time, I get my own instruments. 00:24:45.41\00:24:48.52 And I was able to own my own. 00:24:48.55\00:24:53.72 I did those things in two ways. 00:24:53.76\00:24:56.56 I used my pocket money to pay for my instrument. 00:24:56.59\00:24:58.83 I also used my pocket instrument 00:24:58.86\00:25:01.06 to just look our in the street to find 00:25:01.10\00:25:03.10 CDs and DVDs to learn and to watch other people play. 00:25:03.13\00:25:09.87 Excellent. So you came to the States. 00:25:09.90\00:25:13.31 Did you have relatives here in the States? 00:25:13.38\00:25:14.88 Or this is sort of a leap in the dark or leap of faith? 00:25:14.91\00:25:16.64 I didn't have anyone here. 00:25:16.68\00:25:18.15 Actually, when I came here, I came here in the winter. 00:25:18.18\00:25:20.82 Ooh! In Michigan 00:25:20.85\00:25:24.22 And in Michigan, double ooh. 00:25:24.29\00:25:27.06 And I didn't have a coat. 00:25:27.09\00:25:28.42 When I got here, it was January 5, 2010, 00:25:28.46\00:25:30.93 it was very cold without the coat. 00:25:30.96\00:25:32.33 Bless your heart. 00:25:32.36\00:25:33.70 And having no one, but, you know, 00:25:33.73\00:25:37.43 I had to believe God has a plan for me 00:25:37.47\00:25:38.83 at that point too because when I got here, 00:25:38.87\00:25:40.74 and I know the earthquake happened, 00:25:40.80\00:25:43.51 it was very hard for me to bear. 00:25:43.57\00:25:46.47 But yeah, God was so faithful to me, took me step by step. 00:25:46.51\00:25:52.35 Did you have an acceptance to school? 00:25:52.38\00:25:54.18 Or you, 'cause I'm trying to... To come from Haiti... 00:25:54.22\00:25:57.49 Uh-huh. 00:25:57.55\00:25:58.89 With not a lot of resources. Uh-huh. 00:25:58.92\00:26:00.32 On the way to Michigan, that takes major faith, 00:26:00.36\00:26:02.49 you know, even if you got some place to land 00:26:02.52\00:26:04.89 when you leap, still that's a major cultural-shift, 00:26:04.93\00:26:11.10 language-shift, weather-shift, you know, 00:26:11.13\00:26:16.44 there's no linkages that would say 00:26:16.47\00:26:19.01 a move from Haiti to Michigan would be a comfortable thing. 00:26:19.04\00:26:22.64 And that you were willing to do that. 00:26:22.68\00:26:24.38 Well, I wanted to do it because 00:26:24.41\00:26:26.11 it was a cultural exchange program 00:26:26.15\00:26:27.85 that I had to participate in for the four months. 00:26:27.88\00:26:31.02 So I came in January, 00:26:31.05\00:26:32.39 I was supposed to leave in May 4th, 00:26:32.42\00:26:33.86 I think, it was. 00:26:33.89\00:26:37.33 But because of the earthquake, things changed. 00:26:37.36\00:26:41.50 Amen. 00:26:41.53\00:26:42.86 Because the government allowed me to stay longer, 00:26:42.90\00:26:45.10 and then gave me an employment authorization card. 00:26:45.13\00:26:47.20 Although, at that point... Yeah. 00:26:47.24\00:26:50.41 I don't even have any of the benefits 00:26:50.47\00:26:53.27 as people will have because, you know, 00:26:53.34\00:26:54.68 consider someone has nothing... 00:26:54.71\00:26:56.91 How are you going to make it still. 00:26:56.95\00:26:58.28 Right. 00:26:58.31\00:26:59.78 Now are you done with high school 00:26:59.81\00:27:01.22 or you still in high school? 00:27:01.25\00:27:02.58 I was done with high school at that point. 00:27:02.62\00:27:04.32 Okay. So you're looking to get into college? 00:27:04.35\00:27:06.42 Yes. Yeah. 00:36:22.48\00:36:23.95 So God really, and... 00:36:23.98\00:36:25.31 During this time, you never sacrificed your faith, 00:36:25.35\00:36:28.98 you witnessed for Christ wherever you could, 00:36:29.02\00:36:31.82 you didn't hide that you're Seventh-day Adventist, 00:36:31.85\00:36:33.22 you lifted up the energy, and then God blessed you 00:36:33.25\00:36:35.99 with this train of very wonderful things. 00:36:36.02\00:36:37.89 In fact, this is wonderful too because one thing I realized 00:36:37.93\00:36:41.53 while I was in Michigan State is God puts some issues 00:36:41.56\00:36:46.33 in front of you, for example, so that I could witness. 00:36:46.37\00:36:48.40 For example, challenge I should say, 00:36:48.44\00:36:52.61 the Sabbath issues come, and for me, 00:36:52.64\00:36:55.01 because I was supposed to play for the orchestra 00:36:55.04\00:36:57.65 at Michigan State. 00:36:57.68\00:36:59.01 And when I realized that performances, 00:36:59.05\00:37:00.88 some of the performances are going to be in Sabbath, 00:37:00.95\00:37:03.42 I told the conductors, "I'm not going to be able 00:37:03.45\00:37:05.19 to make this performance." 00:37:05.22\00:37:06.99 And he was shocked, they said, "What are you talking about?" 00:37:07.02\00:37:09.46 I said, "Yes, I will not be able to do that 00:37:09.49\00:37:10.99 because I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:37:11.03\00:37:12.69 I keep the Sabbath." 00:37:12.73\00:37:14.03 He said, "Well, in this case, you cannot be here 00:37:14.10\00:37:15.43 in the orchestra." 00:37:15.46\00:37:16.80 I said, "Well, I understand this." 00:37:16.83\00:37:18.93 But I thought he was going to be... 00:37:18.97\00:37:20.34 It was done, but all the faculties 00:37:20.37\00:37:22.54 started talking to each other that I have a new faith. 00:37:22.57\00:37:26.21 Yes. 00:37:26.24\00:37:27.58 And then one of them come to me and said, 00:37:27.61\00:37:28.94 "Well, Carlot, I heard you have a new religion." 00:37:28.98\00:37:31.31 I said, "Well, I don't have a new religion. 00:37:31.35\00:37:32.98 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:37:33.01\00:37:34.68 Have you ever heard of Seventh-day Adventist?" 00:37:34.72\00:37:36.79 They say, "Oh, yeah. 00:37:36.82\00:37:38.15 I heard of Seventh-day Adventist. 00:37:38.19\00:37:39.52 Those are people who keep the Sabbath." 00:37:39.55\00:37:40.89 But he said, "I can challenge you that 00:37:40.96\00:37:42.29 you don't have to keep the Sabbath." 00:37:42.32\00:37:44.13 And I said, "Professor, that would be great because, 00:37:44.16\00:37:45.83 you know, I love the truth. 00:37:45.86\00:37:47.30 If you don't mind meeting with me that would be great." 00:37:47.40\00:37:50.33 He said, "Okay, let's meet. 00:37:50.37\00:37:51.70 Send me an email and we can meet about this." 00:37:51.73\00:37:53.70 And we met, and we talked about the Sabbath. 00:37:53.74\00:37:56.67 After that I said, "Professor, this is this paper," 00:37:56.71\00:38:00.91 there is one pamphlet that has 100 facts 00:38:00.94\00:38:03.71 about the Sabbath. 00:38:03.78\00:38:05.11 And the root of Sunday worship and Sabbath, I gave it to him, 00:38:05.15\00:38:08.35 and I said, "Maybe after you read them, 00:38:08.38\00:38:10.82 we can have a second conversation." 00:38:10.85\00:38:12.79 He never got back with me, but I knew why. 00:38:12.82\00:38:14.82 Yeah, 'cause he read it. He read it. 00:38:14.86\00:38:17.89 He was convicted. 00:38:17.93\00:38:19.26 He was convicted. Sure he was. 00:38:19.29\00:38:20.63 But that same time, my trumpet professor 00:38:20.66\00:38:24.00 almost cried because he said, 00:38:24.07\00:38:25.40 "Man, I talked to all the trumpet players 00:38:25.43\00:38:27.54 that I know, they said there's no way 00:38:27.57\00:38:29.37 you're going to make it." 00:38:29.40\00:38:30.94 And he said, "Well, can I talk to your pastor? 00:38:30.97\00:38:34.31 Maybe you need an advisor." Yeah. 00:38:34.34\00:38:37.05 I said, "Well, Professor, that doesn't work that way. 00:38:37.08\00:38:39.75 It would be hard for me to know in my conscience 00:38:39.78\00:38:41.95 this is the truth and then deny it 00:38:41.98\00:38:44.19 just because I want to please myself, 00:38:44.22\00:38:45.69 and please this professor, or please this school." 00:38:45.72\00:38:49.69 And at that same time, I was supposed 00:38:49.72\00:38:51.16 to play in Carnegie Hall. 00:38:51.19\00:38:52.66 Oh, wow. 00:38:52.69\00:38:54.00 And they said, "Well, I know you cannot come 00:38:54.10\00:38:56.93 play in Sabbath on Saturday, but in about Carnegie Hall 00:38:56.97\00:39:01.30 is going to be on Saturday night, 00:39:01.34\00:39:03.30 but except you have to do a rehearsal on Saturday at 3." 00:39:03.34\00:39:06.91 And I said, "Well, that's going to be an issue. 00:39:06.94\00:39:09.54 I'm not going to be able to do that because of this." 00:39:09.58\00:39:12.68 And actually, one of the professors even said, 00:39:12.71\00:39:16.32 "You know, there was one guy, 00:39:16.35\00:39:17.69 he used to be the same religion as you, he did it. 00:39:17.72\00:39:20.29 Why can't you do it?" 00:39:20.32\00:39:21.66 I said, "Well, I understand, Professor, 00:39:21.69\00:39:23.02 but I believe in the Bible, I believe in what is truth. 00:39:23.06\00:39:26.26 This is what I believe in the Bible is true. 00:39:26.29\00:39:27.96 I believe the Sabbath. 00:39:28.00\00:39:29.33 There are things you should not be doing 00:39:29.36\00:39:30.70 in the Sabbath. 00:39:30.77\00:39:32.10 You cannot do any work." 00:39:32.13\00:39:33.47 And he said, "Man, I'm really sorry for that." 00:39:33.50\00:39:35.54 I said, "Well, don't be sorry for me, Professor, 00:39:35.57\00:39:37.11 I believe this is the right thing to do." 00:39:37.14\00:39:40.08 And he said, "Well, it's only one hour of your life. 00:39:40.11\00:39:44.75 What if... 00:39:44.78\00:39:46.11 You may never have an opportunity to be in that." 00:39:46.15\00:39:48.05 To do in the Carnegie Hall.
