I want to spend my life 00:00:01.70\00:00:07.70 Mending broken people 00:00:07.74\00:00:12.61 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.64\00:00:18.78 Removing pain 00:00:18.81\00:00:23.89 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.95\00:00:30.13 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:30.19\00:00:34.73 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.73\00:00:40.37 Mending broken people 00:00:40.40\00:00:45.84 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.87\00:00:51.31 Mending broken people 00:00:51.35\00:00:55.22 Hello and welcome to another 3ABN Today program. 00:01:06.70\00:01:09.40 Thank you for joining us as you do each and every day 00:01:09.43\00:01:12.60 and as always thank you for your love and your prayers 00:01:12.63\00:01:15.30 and financial support of 3ABN 00:01:15.34\00:01:17.77 as we endeavor to take this great gospel 00:01:17.81\00:01:19.77 of the kingdom into all the world. 00:01:19.81\00:01:21.68 I'm here today with 00:01:21.71\00:01:23.04 one of my favorite friends in the whole world 00:01:23.08\00:01:24.95 and one of the greatest musicians 00:01:24.98\00:01:27.02 I think on planet earth, 00:01:27.08\00:01:28.68 we'll give God the credit for that, 00:01:28.72\00:01:30.25 my Brother Tim Parton. 00:01:30.29\00:01:31.62 Oh, what a tweet. Tim, how you doing? 00:01:31.65\00:01:33.56 Well I'm doing better now 00:01:33.62\00:01:34.96 that I know I'm one of your favorite friends and... 00:01:34.99\00:01:36.32 Oh, absolutely. I know my status with you. 00:01:36.36\00:01:38.69 It's good to know. Oh, yeah, yeah, all right. 00:01:38.73\00:01:40.20 I think it's important to let people know 00:01:40.26\00:01:41.80 what they mean to you too and I truly... 00:01:41.83\00:01:43.23 Before they die, right? Exactly. 00:01:43.30\00:01:45.73 Well, it doesn't, you know... 00:01:45.77\00:01:47.10 Yeah. 00:01:47.17\00:01:48.50 Every day just let them know how much they mean to you. 00:01:48.54\00:01:49.87 Now that really is 'cause a lot of times 00:01:49.90\00:01:51.34 we'll talk about after someone 00:01:51.37\00:01:53.24 or even I've heard people at funeral homes, 00:01:53.31\00:01:55.01 said, boy, he was an, and you know, 00:01:55.04\00:01:56.81 or later I wish I had it told, 00:01:56.88\00:01:58.78 I lost my father when he was just 51 years old, 00:01:58.81\00:02:02.08 back 1974 00:02:02.12\00:02:03.99 and there were so many regrets I had 00:02:04.02\00:02:06.19 that I thought, 00:02:06.22\00:02:07.56 "Wow, I wish I had just told him this, 00:02:07.59\00:02:09.16 or wish I had told him I loved him more." 00:02:09.19\00:02:10.99 Right, right. 00:02:11.03\00:02:12.36 You know, as you get older you understand those things 00:02:12.39\00:02:13.80 but I was 21 almost, I guess 22 when that happened, 00:02:13.83\00:02:17.37 just a young person, 00:02:17.43\00:02:18.77 but today we want to do some music 00:02:18.80\00:02:20.80 and speaking of that, 00:02:20.84\00:02:22.40 I kind of wanted to go back 00:02:22.44\00:02:24.17 and talk to you and kind of reminisce 00:02:24.21\00:02:27.68 we want you at home to reminisce 00:02:27.71\00:02:29.71 because how important is parental training. 00:02:29.74\00:02:33.25 It's incredibly important 00:02:33.28\00:02:35.02 because the reason I can look back and see 00:02:35.05\00:02:38.12 why I'm here today is because of my parents. 00:02:38.15\00:02:41.22 And so those of you that are parents and grandparents, 00:02:41.26\00:02:44.09 it's our responsibility 00:02:44.13\00:02:46.29 to train up the child in the way he should go. 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.70 And when he is old, the Bible says, 00:02:48.73\00:02:50.60 he will not depart from that, 00:02:50.63\00:02:52.13 you know, they may go away for a while 00:02:52.17\00:02:53.97 but we have to claim those promises 00:02:54.00\00:02:56.47 about our young people. 00:02:56.50\00:02:57.84 But I'm thankful, Tim, I came from, 00:02:57.87\00:03:00.78 my family, we were pretty poor. 00:03:00.81\00:03:02.38 We lived on the poor side of the track on West Frankfort 00:03:02.41\00:03:05.11 but my father was disabled at 36 years old. 00:03:05.15\00:03:08.55 My mother and dad used to, my dad especially 00:03:08.58\00:03:10.79 had a little country band 00:03:10.82\00:03:12.52 and they played every weekend 00:03:12.55\00:03:15.32 everywhere they could play and travel quite a while. 00:03:15.36\00:03:18.39 And I know that my mother only played, 00:03:18.43\00:03:20.96 she always used to say, 00:03:20.96\00:03:22.73 "Now don't talk about me 00:03:22.76\00:03:24.43 playing out in the clubs for a bit but..." 00:03:24.47\00:03:26.90 Now here's what she said, 00:03:26.94\00:03:28.27 "I tried to get your dad to quit 00:03:28.30\00:03:29.67 and he wouldn't quit." 00:03:29.70\00:03:31.04 So I said, "Well how would you like it 00:03:31.07\00:03:32.41 if I go out and play?" 00:03:32.44\00:03:33.78 Oh, wow. 00:03:33.84\00:03:35.18 So she played what we call a little honky-tonk, 00:03:35.21\00:03:36.54 can you show what a honky-tonk, rag time. 00:03:36.58\00:03:39.05 That was my mother, 00:03:42.28\00:03:44.79 she could do it with the best of them... 00:03:44.82\00:03:46.15 I love it. 00:03:46.19\00:03:47.52 She could do it with the best of them 00:03:47.56\00:03:48.89 It's quite a style. Oh, yeah. 00:03:48.92\00:03:50.29 But she did and they were raised in Christian homes. 00:03:50.33\00:03:53.40 I think my mother was raised Methodist, 00:03:53.46\00:03:56.60 my father didn't go to church at all. 00:03:56.63\00:03:58.47 All right. 00:03:58.50\00:03:59.83 Family, they raised 12 kids, I think 13 of them, 00:03:59.87\00:04:02.50 totaled my aunts and uncles 00:04:02.54\00:04:03.91 and my Uncle Kenneth was killed in World War II 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.51 but I was raised with 12 aunts and uncles 00:04:06.54\00:04:09.31 on the one side and some of those like 00:04:09.34\00:04:10.98 Uncle Owen had 12 kids and Uncle Bud eight... 00:04:11.01\00:04:12.98 All right. 00:04:13.01\00:04:14.35 You know, we had five but my father was disabled 00:04:14.38\00:04:16.45 and so he became a Christian, 00:04:16.48\00:04:18.75 my mother became a Christian in the year I was born 00:04:18.79\00:04:21.62 I think, 1951 00:04:21.66\00:04:23.53 and then after that my father took him 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.83 about three or four more years. 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.20 I won't go through the whole deal 00:04:27.23\00:04:29.00 but it was a series of things. 00:04:29.03\00:04:30.63 He just would not, my mother would say, 00:04:30.67\00:04:32.90 "Honey, you really need to accept the Lord." 00:04:32.93\00:04:34.54 Everything he tried to do 00:04:34.57\00:04:36.10 literally as he would say blew up my face 00:04:36.14\00:04:38.11 till finally he said, "You know, what? 00:04:38.14\00:04:39.81 The Lord wants me that bad. 00:04:39.84\00:04:41.18 I'm going to..." 00:04:41.21\00:04:42.54 You know, my mother, so he died for you, 00:04:42.58\00:04:44.25 made a plan of salvation for you, 00:04:44.28\00:04:46.21 then I'm going to give my heart to Him. 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.05 Yeah. And he did that. 00:04:48.08\00:04:49.42 So he quit playing out, 00:04:49.45\00:04:50.85 which he could make pretty good money back then. 00:04:50.89\00:04:52.75 They made money 00:04:52.79\00:04:54.32 and so he quit doing that altogether. 00:04:54.36\00:04:57.49 So now he was disabled with a heart attack, 00:04:57.53\00:04:59.79 where he couldn't hold a regular job. 00:04:59.83\00:05:02.06 So we didn't have much of an income but those of us, 00:05:02.10\00:05:05.80 the kids worked and we all chipped in, 00:05:05.83\00:05:07.67 my mother worked and so we painted houses, 00:05:07.70\00:05:10.31 all the brothers mowed lawns for people and, you know, 00:05:10.34\00:05:13.04 we got jobs at early years. 00:05:13.07\00:05:14.88 But what I'm so thankful 00:05:14.91\00:05:16.51 is that both of my parents were Christians. 00:05:16.54\00:05:19.08 And I didn't hear them 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.45 arguing with each other all the time 00:05:20.52\00:05:21.95 and they didn't argue with us. 00:05:21.98\00:05:23.49 It was like this, this is the way 00:05:23.52\00:05:24.95 it's going to be and this is what you do. 00:05:24.99\00:05:26.45 Right. 00:05:26.49\00:05:27.82 And then they would explain to you why, 00:05:27.86\00:05:29.19 and my dad would say, 00:05:29.22\00:05:30.56 "Look, the Lord made, the reason I'm the parent 00:05:30.63\00:05:32.39 'cause he put me in charge. 00:05:32.43\00:05:34.00 So as long as you're under this roof, 00:05:34.00\00:05:36.16 you're going to do what I say." 00:05:36.20\00:05:37.53 But he was very good at saying. 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.90 This is why I want you to do, not just because I want you 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.34 but I want you to grow up to be something, 00:05:42.37\00:05:45.07 to be a value to somebody else. 00:05:45.11\00:05:47.74 He used to say, "I don't care how much money you make 00:05:47.78\00:05:49.54 or what you do or how much, you know, 00:05:49.58\00:05:51.51 schooling education you get. 00:05:51.55\00:05:52.88 I just want you to be a person who loves people 00:05:52.91\00:05:56.25 and who loves the Lord and makes it to heaven." 00:05:56.28\00:05:59.39 And so I'm thinking today 00:05:59.42\00:06:01.49 when we used to sit around as kids 00:06:01.52\00:06:04.69 and on Friday evening especially, 00:06:04.73\00:06:06.76 Sabbath came and my mother played the piano 00:06:06.83\00:06:08.76 and my dad played guitar, 00:06:08.80\00:06:10.37 and as we got older my brother Tommy played piano, 00:06:10.40\00:06:13.37 and I played guitar, 00:06:13.44\00:06:14.77 my brothers could play bass or guitar, 00:06:14.80\00:06:16.71 whatever you needed, 00:06:16.74\00:06:18.14 and I think you have a similar story. 00:06:18.17\00:06:19.77 I do. 00:06:19.81\00:06:21.14 So tell us a little bit about yours? 00:06:21.18\00:06:22.51 Well, I was raised in a Christian family 00:06:22.54\00:06:24.38 and my dad played the guitar 00:06:24.41\00:06:27.75 and we all sang 00:06:27.78\00:06:29.12 and it was just, it was what we did. 00:06:29.15\00:06:31.62 Actually my parents had formed a little group 00:06:31.65\00:06:34.39 called the Parton Family... 00:06:34.42\00:06:35.76 Okay, all right. 00:06:35.79\00:06:37.13 It was my sister, I have an older sister 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.49 and so it was the Parton trio. 00:06:38.53\00:06:39.86 Okay. 00:06:39.89\00:06:41.20 And so when I came along, that was just, 00:06:41.23\00:06:43.33 it was either get in or get left, you know, 00:06:43.37\00:06:46.94 so I began to sing when I was like two and three. 00:06:47.00\00:06:50.77 I remember my mom telling me that I was singing harmony 00:06:50.81\00:06:55.11 before I was even saying words. 00:06:55.14\00:06:56.75 I would hum harmony to the radio. 00:06:56.81\00:07:00.15 So it was, you know, it's just, 00:07:00.18\00:07:02.12 that's I didn't have, 00:07:02.15\00:07:04.02 I was just telling somebody the other day. 00:07:04.05\00:07:06.39 When I graduated high school, 00:07:06.42\00:07:08.42 I didn't wonder what I was going to do. 00:07:08.46\00:07:12.29 I knew I was going to be playing music. 00:07:12.33\00:07:14.36 Okay. 00:07:14.40\00:07:15.73 It was just like, it's so natural 00:07:15.76\00:07:17.10 and I have a son now 00:07:17.17\00:07:18.50 who is getting ready to graduate 00:07:18.53\00:07:19.87 and I'm kind of concerned about what he's going to do 00:07:19.90\00:07:22.17 because I don't see that natural inclination 00:07:22.20\00:07:25.21 or supernatural whatever 00:07:25.24\00:07:26.57 or however way you want to look at it... 00:07:26.61\00:07:27.94 Sure, yeah. 00:07:27.98\00:07:29.31 But, so I'm kind of concerned about his direction. 00:07:29.34\00:07:31.35 Yeah. 00:07:31.38\00:07:32.71 He's a Christian and he wants to follow the Lord... 00:07:32.75\00:07:34.12 Yeah, sure. 00:07:34.15\00:07:35.48 But there's no, you know, specific, 00:07:35.52\00:07:36.85 obvious like it was in my life 00:07:36.89\00:07:39.32 where I went right on the road out of high school, 00:07:39.35\00:07:41.66 so anyway back to my growing up, 00:07:41.69\00:07:44.49 that was, we sang four or five times a week. 00:07:44.53\00:07:48.96 Really? Yeah. 00:10:20.72\00:10:22.05 And do you ever do any of the Lanny Wolfe stuff? 00:10:22.08\00:10:23.79 We did... 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.19 Did you ever hear Lanny Wolfe before you came here? 00:10:25.22\00:10:26.86 Oh, yeah, definitely... 00:10:26.92\00:10:28.26 Everybody, right? Oh, my goodness, yeah. 00:10:28.29\00:10:29.62 We had in his records and yeah, there was, 00:10:29.66\00:10:32.29 we might visit 00:10:32.33\00:10:34.30 just a whole bunch of different writers 00:10:34.30\00:10:36.20 that we sang from... 00:10:36.23\00:10:37.57 Surely the presence... Surely the presence... 00:10:37.60\00:10:38.93 Of the Lord. Yeah. 00:10:38.97\00:10:40.30 Yeah, I want you to play a little bit of that... 00:10:40.37\00:10:41.70 Okay... 00:10:41.74\00:10:43.07 Maybe we'll saying with you in a minute. 00:10:43.10\00:10:44.44 Do you have a preference on the key words for you? 00:10:44.47\00:10:45.81 No. well, you know what I can do and can't do, so. 00:10:45.84\00:10:47.68 Okay. 00:10:47.71\00:10:49.04 Surely the presence 00:11:33.22\00:11:38.09 of the Lord is in this place 00:11:38.13\00:11:43.33 I can feel 00:11:43.40\00:11:45.70 His mighty power 00:11:45.73\00:11:48.74 and His grace 00:11:48.77\00:11:53.41 I can hear 00:11:53.44\00:11:55.71 the brush of angel's wings 00:11:55.74\00:11:59.25 I see glory on each face 00:11:59.28\00:12:04.69 Surely the presence 00:12:04.72\00:12:09.69 of the Lord is in this place. 00:12:09.72\00:12:15.96 Well, it's amazing, no matter where you go, 00:12:16.00\00:12:18.73 you can feel the presence of the Lord, 00:12:18.77\00:12:20.40 that's what I love about it is wherever we travel, 00:12:20.44\00:12:22.90 we never have to say, "Oh, I'm afraid." 00:12:22.94\00:12:24.81 Now, maybe if we take ourselves into positions 00:12:24.84\00:12:27.54 we shouldn't be in 00:12:27.58\00:12:28.98 and my folks always tell me now if you go in a bar, 00:12:29.01\00:12:31.21 the Lord isn't going to go in there with you. 00:12:31.25\00:12:32.58 Right. 00:12:32.61\00:12:33.98 Your angel's not going to go in there with you, 00:12:34.02\00:12:35.35 so you're on your own. 00:12:35.38\00:12:36.72 So I never went in a bar, you know. 00:12:36.75\00:12:38.09 All right, that's smart, that's smart. 00:12:38.12\00:12:39.45 But it's amazing that wherever we go 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.02 that God's presence is there. 00:12:42.06\00:12:43.63 Absolutely. 00:12:43.69\00:12:45.03 And whether we're here on television 00:12:45.06\00:12:46.46 or wherever you are at home, 00:12:46.49\00:12:48.23 right now you may be by yourself. 00:12:48.26\00:12:50.13 Maybe you've not seen anybody, haven't heard from your kids 00:12:50.20\00:12:53.47 or, your, you know, family in any sense 00:12:53.50\00:12:55.84 and you're feeling really down, you're feeling really lonely 00:12:55.87\00:12:58.34 but you don't have to be, all you do is say, 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.78 "Lord here I am, 00:13:00.81\00:13:02.14 please come and visit me today." 00:13:02.18\00:13:04.28 And I promise you He's going to say, 00:13:04.31\00:13:06.25 "Well, I've been here all along, 00:13:06.28\00:13:07.78 you just didn't see me. 00:13:07.82\00:13:09.15 You just didn't hear me." 00:13:09.18\00:13:10.52 And but when we're open to that, 00:13:10.59\00:13:11.92 God will speak to us. 00:13:11.95\00:13:13.66 And that peace will come that will fill that void. 00:13:13.69\00:13:17.43 And so it's, 00:13:17.46\00:13:18.79 I'm so thankful today to be a Christian. 00:13:18.83\00:13:21.56 And I'm so thankful that I have an opportunity. 00:13:21.60\00:13:24.80 I never knew what I was going to, 00:13:24.83\00:13:26.27 my dad used to say, 00:13:26.30\00:13:27.64 "Son, what are you going to do with your life?" 00:13:27.67\00:13:29.00 I said, "I don't know." 00:13:29.04\00:13:30.67 Like it was in high school, he's like you, about your son, 00:13:30.71\00:13:34.48 get through about my junior year, 00:13:34.51\00:13:35.88 my dad finished eighth grade, 00:13:35.91\00:13:38.41 he was first one in his family of 12 or 13, 00:13:38.45\00:13:41.72 graduate in eighth grade. 00:13:41.75\00:13:43.18 My mother I think did her freshman year at high school. 00:13:43.22\00:13:45.79 So they didn't put much emphasis on education too much 00:13:45.82\00:13:48.46 but they wanted us to do something. 00:13:48.49\00:13:49.99 So I'd be 16 junior, senior, 00:13:50.03\00:13:52.59 son, what are you going to do with your life, 00:13:52.63\00:13:53.96 I said, "I don't know. 00:13:54.00\00:13:55.30 I'm just kid." 00:13:55.33\00:13:56.70 He said, "Yeah, but you graduate in high school, 00:13:56.73\00:13:58.10 what are you going to do?" 00:13:58.13\00:13:59.47 And I said, "I really don't know." 00:13:59.50\00:14:00.94 And he said, "Well, I think 00:14:00.97\00:14:02.30 it's about time you figure this out. 00:14:02.34\00:14:03.84 You need to start thinking." 00:14:03.91\00:14:05.24 So one day, Tim, 00:14:05.27\00:14:06.61 they had a senior class in West Frankfort, 00:14:06.64\00:14:08.98 we went down, it was 1969 00:14:09.01\00:14:11.58 to Southern Illinois University, 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.28 big university in Carbondale. 00:14:13.31\00:14:15.55 And it was orientation of course, 00:14:15.58\00:14:16.99 what they're doing is 00:14:17.02\00:14:18.35 trying to get all the students from here 00:14:18.39\00:14:20.29 to go to college there. 00:14:20.36\00:14:22.16 So first time in my life, I went to a college campus. 00:14:22.19\00:14:25.19 I said, "Wow this is pretty good." 00:14:25.23\00:14:27.10 But, you know, you're in late '60s 00:14:27.13\00:14:28.80 and you are starting the hippie movement 00:14:28.83\00:14:30.17 and all these things are going but I said, 00:14:30.23\00:14:32.23 "Maybe I'll go to college." 00:14:32.27\00:14:33.60 My older brothers, none of them had gone to college. 00:14:33.64\00:14:36.17 So maybe I'll do that. 00:14:36.20\00:14:37.57 So I go home, I said, I want to talk to my dad 00:14:37.61\00:14:40.04 'cause he's always what are you going to do. 00:14:40.08\00:14:41.88 We had a little music room, 00:14:41.91\00:14:43.24 it's just we called it music room, 00:14:43.31\00:14:44.65 we had a little reel to reel Sony tape recorder, 00:14:44.68\00:14:47.28 guitars and big speakers he had built 00:14:47.32\00:14:49.42 and people would come over, his friends 00:14:49.45\00:14:51.32 and they play it every Tuesday night 00:14:51.35\00:14:52.89 and, you know, things like this. 00:14:52.92\00:14:54.49 So I would go in there 00:14:54.52\00:14:56.09 and my dad was sitting on a stool, 00:14:56.12\00:14:58.03 I'll never forget, 00:14:58.06\00:14:59.39 had a microphone, little recorder, 00:14:59.43\00:15:01.20 he was playing his guitar, I said, "Dad." 00:15:01.23\00:15:03.40 "Yeah, son?" 00:15:03.47\00:15:04.80 I said, "You always ask me 00:15:04.83\00:15:06.50 what I'm going to do with my life?" 00:15:06.53\00:15:07.87 I said, "I think, I know what I want to do." 00:15:07.90\00:15:09.70 "Really, what's that?" 00:15:09.74\00:15:11.07 Didn't hardly, you know, hardly looked around, 00:15:11.11\00:15:12.84 said "Really what's that?" 00:15:12.87\00:15:14.21 I said, "I want to go to college." 00:15:14.28\00:15:16.58 He looked back and he said, 00:15:16.61\00:15:17.98 "That's what I like about you son, 00:15:18.01\00:15:19.41 you're always joking." 00:15:19.45\00:15:20.92 And then he just went on back and I walked away and I'm like, 00:15:20.95\00:15:23.69 "Wow, who do I think I am to go to college?" 00:15:23.72\00:15:25.62 I mean, I didn't know anything about grants awaited... 00:15:25.65\00:15:27.59 Sure, sure. 00:15:27.66\00:15:28.99 So I didn't do it, you know, point is, 00:15:29.02\00:15:30.46 but the Lord had a plan for my life. 00:15:30.53\00:15:32.26 God's got a plan for your life... 00:15:32.29\00:15:33.73 Absolutely does. 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.10 Maybe you don't know 00:15:35.13\00:15:36.46 the direction God wants you to go right now. 00:15:36.50\00:15:37.83 Now that could be the teenager, 00:15:37.87\00:15:39.50 that could be the person in college 00:15:39.53\00:15:40.94 or you might be my age or older, 00:15:40.97\00:15:42.37 you might be 75, still wondering. 00:15:42.40\00:15:44.47 Now wonder what it is God wants me to do 00:15:44.51\00:15:46.41 as long as we have breath, 00:15:46.44\00:15:48.18 you know, let everything that has breath do what? 00:15:48.21\00:15:51.05 Praise the Lord. Absolutely. 00:15:51.08\00:15:53.01 And so I'm so thankful, I got in construction. 00:15:53.05\00:15:55.85 My brother and I, we had a construction company 00:15:55.88\00:15:57.82 about, oh, I don't know, 13, 14 years, 00:15:57.85\00:16:00.09 then I went to Michigan, 00:16:00.12\00:16:01.46 managed a lumber yard there in Berrien Springs, 00:16:01.49\00:16:03.89 you know, Andrews University... 00:16:03.96\00:16:06.19 Came back down here in '79, 00:16:06.23\00:16:08.93 Melody's mother and I 00:16:08.96\00:16:10.30 and the girls we had Ronda and Lisa. 00:16:10.37\00:16:12.50 She had two girls when we were married 00:16:12.53\00:16:14.17 and so we had a little group. 00:16:14.24\00:16:15.57 So we started traveling and singing, 00:16:15.60\00:16:17.51 then of course she was killed in an automobile accident 00:16:17.54\00:16:19.74 in 1982 00:16:19.77\00:16:21.11 but Melody and I, we continued singing 00:16:21.14\00:16:23.45 as she got older 00:16:23.48\00:16:24.81 and I praise God today that she still does. 00:16:24.85\00:16:26.38 So train up a child in a way it should go, 00:16:26.41\00:16:28.28 now it doesn't mean anybody, everybody is perfect 00:16:28.32\00:16:30.49 'cause none of us are, 00:16:30.52\00:16:32.02 but like you, where would you be 00:16:32.05\00:16:33.39 without the training from your folks today? 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.52 Right. 00:16:35.56\00:16:36.96 I think about that 00:16:37.03\00:16:38.36 and my older sister and I talk about that 00:16:38.39\00:16:41.60 and the great memories 00:16:41.63\00:16:42.96 that we have not only the training 00:16:43.00\00:16:45.60 and the godly influence 00:16:45.63\00:16:48.00 that my parents instilled within us 00:16:48.04\00:16:50.27 and being around people, 00:16:50.31\00:16:51.91 being in churches and singing 00:16:51.94\00:16:53.84 and just being, 00:16:53.88\00:16:55.21 having a community of people of fellow believers, 00:16:55.24\00:16:58.41 but the words of the songs that we sang, 00:16:58.45\00:17:03.08 they come into play so much in our daily lives, 00:17:03.12\00:17:06.35 we're just going through life 00:17:06.39\00:17:08.16 and I'll be walking down the street 00:17:08.19\00:17:09.52 or driving down the street 00:17:09.56\00:17:10.89 and a song will come to me, lyrics will come to me 00:17:10.96\00:17:13.86 that provide direction for me in a situation that, 00:17:13.93\00:17:18.73 you know, I would never have thought that, 00:17:18.77\00:17:20.24 that song would have given me some guidance, some clearance, 00:17:20.27\00:17:23.81 some clarity on what to do. 00:17:23.84\00:17:25.41 In fact, let me just sing a song... 00:17:25.44\00:17:27.48 Yeah. Okay. 00:34:41.98\00:34:43.45 I'll give you one I'll write it. 00:34:43.51\00:34:44.85 From the Danny Shelton School of music, I love it. 00:34:44.88\00:34:47.08 Well, that will be worth something, 00:34:47.12\00:34:48.68 as long as I can have a cap and gown... 00:34:48.72\00:34:51.09 What lessons would do 00:34:51.12\00:34:52.45 because most of the people that I know, 00:34:52.49\00:34:54.86 I mean, I have friends who, 00:34:54.89\00:34:56.89 they play a little bit and they'll say, 00:34:56.93\00:34:58.53 I took ten years of piano as a child 00:34:58.56\00:35:01.50 but they can't play anything unless it's in front of them. 00:35:01.53\00:35:04.70 But now you, if we put a song in front of you, 00:35:04.73\00:35:07.14 you could play a little bit enough just to hear it. 00:35:07.17\00:35:09.70 Yeah, it would be painful at first. 00:35:09.74\00:35:12.07 Because I'm not good at sight reading. 00:35:12.11\00:35:14.74 And I would want to take time and wood shed it as they say. 00:35:14.78\00:35:18.98 But you know, I was listening 00:35:19.01\00:35:21.08 to somebody talking just this morning, 00:35:21.12\00:35:23.99 talking about the 10,000 hour concept, 00:35:24.02\00:35:28.32 I don't know if you've heard how it takes 10, 000 hours 00:35:28.36\00:35:31.53 to master something. 00:35:31.56\00:35:32.89 Really? 00:35:32.93\00:35:34.30 Music is something, again, growing up in it, 00:35:34.30\00:35:37.90 that's all I've known. 00:35:37.93\00:35:39.27 So thus I've been blessed, 00:35:39.30\00:35:41.87 I was blessed to be in that position. 00:35:41.90\00:35:43.97 But I had a reason to practice 00:35:44.01\00:35:46.57 which I didn't even know I was practicing at the time, 00:35:46.64\00:35:49.18 I was just playing to learn the songs 00:35:49.21\00:35:51.08 that my family was going to be singing. 00:35:51.11\00:35:52.65 So I always encourage people, if you want to, 00:35:52.68\00:35:55.45 want to be good at something, have a reason to do it 00:35:55.48\00:35:59.49 and then if you don't want to embarrass yourself 00:35:59.52\00:36:01.62 in the public 00:36:01.66\00:36:02.99 while you'll learn how to do that 00:36:03.02\00:36:05.53 but it takes a lifetime of committing 00:36:05.56\00:36:07.40 and you can't be good at several things. 00:36:07.46\00:36:09.03 Yes. 00:36:09.06\00:36:10.40 You know, you have to pick a field that you're good at 00:36:10.47\00:36:12.50 and then pay somebody to mow the yard. 00:36:12.53\00:36:15.50 My dad once again used to say, 00:36:15.54\00:36:17.77 "Son you're a jack of all trades and master of none." 00:36:17.81\00:36:19.81 Oh, wow. 00:36:19.84\00:36:21.18 'Cause I like doing everything and when ball season was in, 00:36:21.21\00:36:23.95 no matter what kind of, 00:36:23.98\00:36:25.31 if it's a baseball, ping-pong ball, 00:36:25.35\00:36:27.02 basketball, you know, I'd find something to do 00:36:27.05\00:36:30.29 but I'd love to do music too. 00:36:30.32\00:36:32.02 So I'd do music and then I'd play ball some more, 00:36:32.05\00:36:34.56 then I got into construction, then I do this and I do that. 00:36:34.59\00:36:37.89 So consequently, 00:36:37.93\00:36:39.43 I can do a little bit of a number of things 00:36:39.46\00:36:41.43 but really didn't master but... 00:36:41.46\00:36:43.43 But you're a great communicator and that's what I do love... 00:36:43.47\00:36:46.23 That I've probably put a whole lot more than 10,000 hours in. 00:36:46.27\00:36:49.37 Well, sure.
