And you are the vice president. 00:08:58.47\00:09:00.67 And so tell me what is Farm Stew? 00:09:00.70\00:09:03.20 What does Farm Stew stand for? 00:09:03.24\00:09:04.57 And tell me just a little bit about your ministry 00:09:04.61\00:09:06.61 before we go back and unpackage your story? 00:09:06.64\00:09:08.98 Thanks for the opportunity to share. 00:09:09.01\00:09:11.35 I'm a fairly new Adventist and... 00:09:11.38\00:09:14.15 but I'm a nutritionist 00:09:14.18\00:09:15.52 and I have a masters in Public Health 00:09:15.55\00:09:16.89 from Johns Hopkins. 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.25 And I really researched Adventist for a long time 00:09:18.29\00:09:21.39 before I even became one. 00:09:21.42\00:09:23.16 And one of the things 00:09:23.19\00:09:24.53 that struck me was the power of these eight-letter acronyms. 00:09:24.56\00:09:27.60 Newstart developed by Loma Linda 00:09:27.63\00:09:30.10 and also now Creation Health by Florida hospital. 00:09:30.13\00:09:33.97 And these health messages packaged in these simple ways 00:09:34.00\00:09:38.54 have gained North American Adventists 00:09:38.57\00:09:41.78 over 10 years of abundant life 00:09:41.81\00:09:44.21 compared to the average American population. 00:09:44.25\00:09:46.08 Ten years, you know, that's amazing, isn't it? 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.62 It is. I mean, it's significant. 00:09:47.65\00:09:49.05 You're not just talking a few months, 00:09:49.08\00:09:50.42 you're talking 10 full years. 00:09:50.45\00:09:51.89 So the life expectancy increases by 10 years 00:09:51.92\00:09:53.82 by following these principles. 00:09:53.86\00:09:55.29 Exactly, and that's been documented 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.86 by National Geographic, by NIH 00:09:57.89\00:10:00.43 where the blue zones in Loma Linda. 00:10:00.46\00:10:02.70 So it is powerful message and yet you look at Africa 00:10:02.73\00:10:06.43 and they have a life span of 60 years. 00:10:06.47\00:10:09.94 And so I thought, I was just really praying, 00:10:09.97\00:10:12.31 "What could be a health message for Africans 00:10:12.34\00:10:15.71 or for Asian villagers, rural people, 00:10:15.74\00:10:18.35 where 75% of the world's poor live." 00:10:18.38\00:10:21.35 There are subsistence farmers in rural villages. 00:10:21.38\00:10:24.42 So I believe Farm Stew is a gift from God. 00:10:24.45\00:10:26.55 Amen. 00:10:26.59\00:10:27.92 Farming is the first letter and... 00:10:27.96\00:10:30.03 Okay. So it's an acronym, Farm Stew. 00:10:30.06\00:10:32.03 It is an acronym, yes. 00:10:32.06\00:10:34.10 And so much like Newstart. 00:10:34.13\00:10:35.76 So "Farming," 00:10:35.80\00:10:37.20 we really focus on God's principles for farming. 00:10:37.23\00:10:41.20 And really treating the land and the soil with respect 00:10:41.24\00:10:44.84 and practicing practices that are ancient. 00:10:44.87\00:10:47.24 Anybody with the hoe 00:10:47.28\00:10:48.61 can be the best farmer in the world. 00:10:48.64\00:10:49.98 Right. I like that. 00:10:50.01\00:10:51.35 The second one is "Attitude". 00:10:51.38\00:10:53.31 And that's where we roll up the ideas of trust in God, 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.82 and also that work ethic, 00:10:56.85\00:10:58.49 that six days we labor and work, 00:10:58.52\00:11:00.79 and we do so with joy. 00:11:00.82\00:11:02.16 Amen. 00:11:02.19\00:11:03.53 And then comes the "Rest" 00:11:03.56\00:11:05.99 which we know we need nightly rest, 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.80 weekly Sabbath's rest, 00:11:07.83\00:11:09.56 but we also need rest for the soil 00:11:09.60\00:11:11.33 and crop rotation. 00:11:11.37\00:11:12.77 It's very important, and many of the soils 00:11:12.80\00:11:15.40 in all these different places are depleted 00:11:15.44\00:11:17.77 because of not properly rotating and resting the soil. 00:11:17.81\00:11:21.74 And then finally is "Meals". 00:11:21.78\00:11:23.88 And as a nutritionist, I love this part 00:11:23.91\00:11:27.02 because we're not just biochemical beings, 00:11:27.05\00:11:30.25 we need to actually take the time 00:11:30.29\00:11:31.82 to prepare food as opposed to buying the... 00:11:31.85\00:11:34.62 sort of cheap industrial food 00:11:34.66\00:11:36.19 that many people are filling their bellies with, 00:11:36.22\00:11:38.39 but it's not really nourishing their bodies. 00:11:38.43\00:11:40.30 Wow. 00:11:40.33\00:11:41.66 So that's the Farm, 00:11:41.70\00:11:43.03 I'm gonna hand Stew over to Jacob. 00:11:43.06\00:11:44.43 Okay. 00:11:44.47\00:11:45.80 Yes. Yes. 00:11:45.83\00:11:47.17 Yes, "S" is an acronym that stands for "Sanitation". 00:11:47.20\00:11:51.04 Oh, okay. 00:11:51.07\00:11:52.41 We focus at cleanliness around our homes. 00:11:52.44\00:11:56.14 Cleanliness in the food that we eat. 00:11:56.18\00:11:59.81 We go ahead and train people 00:11:59.85\00:12:02.72 on how to dispose off the wastes. 00:12:02.75\00:12:06.12 Those things that can contaminate 00:12:06.15\00:12:09.26 the environments that we live in. 00:12:09.29\00:12:11.79 You know, by the virtue of the fact 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.16 that I'm from Africa, I teach what I've lived. 00:12:13.19\00:12:15.96 Okay. 00:12:16.00\00:12:17.33 So having moved to America, 00:12:17.37\00:12:19.53 I know the challenges that faces Africans 00:12:19.57\00:12:24.01 as opposed to those things that we take for granted 00:12:24.04\00:12:27.41 that are in America, all right? 00:12:27.44\00:12:29.28 What would some of those challenges be? 00:12:29.31\00:12:31.95 Defecation, you know, in America, 00:12:31.98\00:12:36.12 you go to a house self contained, right? 00:12:36.15\00:12:39.19 Yeah, we have flush toilets. Flush toilet. 00:12:39.22\00:12:41.09 We've got the rest room... 00:12:41.12\00:12:42.46 Running water. Running water. 00:12:42.49\00:12:43.83 Running water, everything, everything, 00:12:43.86\00:12:45.19 it is as a right. 00:12:45.23\00:12:47.16 In Africa, it's a privilege. 00:12:47.20\00:12:48.60 Whoa! 00:12:48.63\00:12:49.96 So we teach people to refocus 00:12:50.00\00:12:52.63 on what is important in our lives. 00:12:52.67\00:12:56.44 And these are things that are very easy to manage. 00:12:56.47\00:13:00.28 Separating where the drinking water is 00:13:00.31\00:13:03.91 and from where the waste disposal is. 00:13:03.95\00:13:08.08 They... They'll cross contaminate. 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.82 Yes, yes. 00:13:09.85\00:13:11.25 So when we train these people, 00:13:11.29\00:13:14.06 we focus at practical everyday living that they can do. 00:13:14.09\00:13:20.73 Another thing is "Temperance". 00:13:20.76\00:13:22.63 Moderating in everything that we do, you know, 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.20 too much of everything is dangerous, right? 00:13:25.23\00:13:27.50 So we focus at teaching people on moderating, 00:13:27.54\00:13:31.01 on everything that we do. 00:13:31.04\00:13:34.14 "Enterprise", you ask yourself, 00:13:34.18\00:13:36.98 "Why did I come to America?" 00:13:37.01\00:13:40.22 We say that America is a land of opportunity, right? 00:13:40.25\00:13:41.92 Yes. 00:13:41.95\00:13:43.28 Do we know it's a land of opportunity? 00:13:43.32\00:13:44.65 I came to America in 2006. 00:13:44.69\00:13:47.62 And actually I was focused at 00:13:47.66\00:13:49.36 being an engineer in three years, 00:13:49.39\00:13:50.93 which did not happen. 00:13:50.96\00:13:52.39 Because I know that if you give somebody an opportunity 00:13:52.43\00:13:58.87 in the right environment, he is able to thrive. 00:13:58.90\00:14:02.77 So Farm Stew focus at giving people opportunity 00:14:02.80\00:14:06.24 as an enterprise. 00:14:06.27\00:14:07.71 Excellent. 00:14:07.74\00:14:10.11 Some of the people that we train make soya mandazis, 00:14:10.15\00:14:13.05 all right? 00:14:13.08\00:14:14.42 That is an enterprise, 00:14:14.45\00:14:15.85 a way that they can earn a living. 00:14:15.88\00:14:18.45 And then something that is very dear to me is "Water". 00:14:18.49\00:14:22.06 Water. 00:14:22.09\00:14:24.13 People take shower in the river, 00:14:24.16\00:14:27.63 up to the time that I was coming to America, 00:14:27.66\00:14:29.76 I was taking shower in the river. 00:14:29.80\00:14:31.17 Wow, that's where you bathe is in the river. 00:14:31.20\00:14:32.93 That is where you bathe, that is where you draw water. 00:14:32.97\00:14:36.47 Draw water as in drinking water? 00:14:36.50\00:14:38.61 Drinking water come from the river. 00:14:38.64\00:14:39.97 Yeah. And that's where... 00:14:40.01\00:14:41.34 So people are bathing, 00:14:41.38\00:14:42.71 people are drinking from this, yes. 00:14:42.74\00:14:44.08 Yes, you draw it, you take it home, 00:14:44.11\00:14:47.05 think that after you taking home, 00:14:47.08\00:14:48.82 now it is clean. 00:14:48.85\00:14:50.19 So we focus at training people 00:14:50.22\00:14:53.19 on how we can treat water from rain water. 00:14:53.22\00:14:59.76 In the last year, through my initiation, we... 00:14:59.79\00:15:04.33 I... 00:15:04.37\00:15:06.10 through my initiative, we dug seven wells. 00:15:06.13\00:15:08.97 Amen. 00:15:09.00\00:15:10.34 Amen. Yes. 00:15:10.37\00:15:11.71 And these are just hand dug wells. 00:15:11.74\00:15:13.11 Hand dug wells 00:15:13.14\00:15:14.74 but very protected then in the end, 00:15:14.78\00:15:16.41 so that they maintain safe. Cross contamination. 00:15:16.44\00:15:18.41 Yes. Amen. 00:15:18.45\00:15:20.52 So this is what Farm Stew is. Okay. 00:15:20.55\00:15:23.59 And this is what we are about, yes. 00:15:23.62\00:15:26.05 It's a great acronym, actually, it is for... 00:15:26.09\00:15:28.69 I truly feel it was a gift from God 00:15:28.72\00:15:31.13 because now we've been to conferences 00:15:31.16\00:15:33.93 and shared this with a lot of people. 00:15:33.96\00:15:36.70 And every time I meet an African, I say, 00:15:36.73\00:15:39.20 "Are we missing something? 00:15:39.23\00:15:40.57 Is there something that should be different?" 00:15:40.60\00:15:41.97 I have not had one person say no and in fact, 00:15:42.00\00:15:45.84 what they say is, "This needs to be everywhere. 00:15:45.87\00:15:48.24 How can I bring this to my church? 00:15:48.28\00:15:49.88 How can I bring it back to my country?" 00:15:49.91\00:15:53.11 So let's take a left turn 00:15:53.15\00:15:54.95 before we keep going with the ministry. 00:15:54.98\00:15:57.59 I want to know how you got involved. 00:15:57.62\00:16:00.42 Take us back to the early days, I guess. 00:16:00.46\00:16:02.89 Maybe growing up, Joy, 00:16:02.92\00:16:04.26 and then how you were first drawn 00:16:04.29\00:16:05.89 to the Adventist church and into health? 00:16:05.93\00:16:08.20 Yeah. 00:16:08.23\00:16:09.56 Well, I say it's started at birth 00:16:09.60\00:16:11.37 because I was born in the Adventist hospital 00:16:11.40\00:16:14.24 and it was an emergency C section situation. 00:16:14.27\00:16:17.11 So I know those nurses were praying for me. 00:16:17.14\00:16:19.17 Amen. 00:16:19.21\00:16:20.54 I became a vegetarian at age nine, 00:16:20.58\00:16:22.34 just because my heart was so big for animals. 00:16:22.38\00:16:25.31 I was just gonna say, is it because your family, 00:16:25.35\00:16:26.75 all turned vegetarian? 00:16:26.78\00:16:28.12 No, I was the only one. At nine years of age. 00:16:28.15\00:16:30.65 Yes, and I'm still, 00:16:30.69\00:16:32.02 I'm the only Adventist in my family 00:16:32.05\00:16:34.26 but I'm praying that will change soon. 00:16:34.29\00:16:36.02 Amen, that's right, amen. 00:16:36.06\00:16:37.39 But I, in under grad, I studied nutrition, 00:16:37.43\00:16:39.86 mostly to just prove to my grandmas 00:16:39.89\00:16:41.56 that I wasn't going to shrivel up 00:16:41.60\00:16:43.06 and die being a vegetarian. 00:16:43.10\00:16:44.43 Yeah. 00:16:44.47\00:16:45.80 And say, "How are you gonna get your nutrients, right?" 00:16:45.83\00:16:47.17 Exactly. 00:16:47.20\00:16:48.54 You need calcium, and protein, and all that stuff. 00:16:48.57\00:16:49.90 Exactly. 00:16:49.94\00:16:51.27 And so it was quite a privilege, it really... 00:16:51.31\00:16:54.81 I started learning about Adventist 00:16:54.84\00:16:56.31 actually through clinical research 00:16:56.34\00:16:58.01 and writing my research papers. 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.22 And I just kept coming upon these Adventists 00:17:00.25\00:17:02.38 and how they were living longer. 00:17:02.42\00:17:03.75 And this is back in the, you know, 00:17:03.79\00:17:05.95 late '80s, early '90s. 00:17:05.99\00:17:07.99 But I never met one. 00:17:08.02\00:17:09.62 So even then, 00:17:09.66\00:17:12.33 I started shopping at health food stores for a while. 00:17:12.36\00:17:15.00 I actually lived in Silver Spring, 00:17:15.03\00:17:17.50 but I never actually met 00:17:17.53\00:17:19.20 and befriended a real Adventist 00:17:19.23\00:17:20.60 until I was about 35. 00:17:20.64\00:17:22.74 And even then, 00:17:22.77\00:17:24.67 I kind of put Adventists in a different category 00:17:24.71\00:17:27.68 from other Christians. 00:17:27.71\00:17:29.04 Jesus was always important to me. 00:17:29.08\00:17:30.68 Amen. 00:17:30.71\00:17:32.05 But I just had that barrier in my mind, you know. 00:17:32.08\00:17:34.72 And just praise God, really... 00:17:34.75\00:17:36.92 Actually, it was in part the final thing 00:17:36.95\00:17:39.85 that got me to cross over the line 00:17:39.89\00:17:41.72 was going to Uganda 00:17:41.76\00:17:43.56 and meeting members of our church in Uganda. 00:17:43.59\00:17:46.86 And there... 00:17:46.90\00:17:48.26 just active prayers on my behalf. 00:17:48.30\00:17:50.97 I was baptized actually in December 2015. 00:17:51.00\00:17:55.60 Amen. Wow. 00:17:55.64\00:17:57.04 So why did you go to Uganda? 00:17:57.07\00:17:59.11 I went with the Farmer-to-Farmer program. 00:17:59.14\00:18:02.14 I'm a nutritionist and they wanted someone 00:18:02.18\00:18:05.78 who could transform the soybeans 00:18:05.81\00:18:07.45 that they were growing into food 00:18:07.48\00:18:09.28 that their children could eat 00:18:09.32\00:18:10.65 and also that they could make small businesses out of. 00:18:10.69\00:18:13.69 And sadly, they have been growing soyas 00:18:13.72\00:18:16.52 since the '60s or soybeans, we call them. 00:18:16.56\00:18:19.03 In Africa, they are called soya. 00:18:19.06\00:18:20.70 Since the '60s 00:18:20.73\00:18:22.06 but they don't give it to their children, 00:18:22.10\00:18:23.97 and the protein malnutrition 00:18:24.00\00:18:25.73 there is very high for the children. 00:18:25.77\00:18:27.37 More than 30% of the children are stunted, 00:18:27.40\00:18:30.11 which is actually a life long condition 00:18:30.14\00:18:31.91 that decreases their mental capacity 00:18:31.94\00:18:34.48 as well as their earning potential for life. 00:18:34.51\00:18:37.28 So it's interesting. 00:18:37.31\00:18:38.65 So even as a young child, 00:18:38.68\00:18:40.02 you were very interested in health, 00:18:40.05\00:18:41.38 nutrition and seems like others. 00:18:41.42\00:18:42.75 You have heart for animals and then, you now, 00:18:42.78\00:18:44.19 that's just right into people, you know, 00:18:44.22\00:18:45.55 you're still having to care for others 00:18:45.59\00:18:46.92 and wanting to better them. 00:18:46.96\00:18:48.29 Yes, and I spent most of my 20s overseas 00:18:48.32\00:18:52.53 and I learned a lot of different things, 00:18:52.56\00:18:56.16 mostly in Latin America. 00:18:56.20\00:18:57.63 I speak Spanish and Portuguese so people would say, 00:18:57.67\00:18:59.40 "Well, why are you in Africa?" 00:18:59.43\00:19:02.00 But really it's because of the data in Africa. 00:19:02.04\00:19:04.81 It's the continent that has truly been left behind 00:19:04.84\00:19:08.44 in terms of a lot of our development. 00:19:08.48\00:19:10.88 And so that's where my heart has been drawn. 00:19:10.91\00:19:14.02 Wow. 00:19:14.05\00:19:15.38 Amazing, there's a lot more I know to your story, 00:19:15.42\00:19:17.15 that was just a real quick synopsis but, yeah, 00:19:17.19\00:19:19.42 it's really neat how God has led you, you know, 00:19:19.45\00:19:21.02 to where you are now and how He is using you. 00:19:21.06\00:19:22.39 Amen, He is faithful. 00:19:22.42\00:19:23.76 Helping others, that is great. 00:19:23.79\00:19:25.36 So, Jacob, tell us your story? Yes, yes. 00:19:25.39\00:19:27.56 I know you're from Africa. 00:19:27.60\00:19:28.93 Yes, I'm from Kenya. Kenya. 00:19:28.96\00:19:30.60 I was raised in Kenya. 00:19:30.63\00:19:34.00 My grandfather was a Seventh-day Adventist pastor. 00:19:34.04\00:19:36.67 So I have a good foundation in the Adventist church. 00:19:36.71\00:19:42.88 I used to preach when I was in primary school, 00:19:42.91\00:19:46.98 I think you call it grade school in America. 00:19:47.02\00:19:48.48 Oh, that's great. 00:19:48.52\00:19:49.85 So as you grow, 00:19:49.88\00:19:54.79 as you continue, 00:19:54.82\00:19:56.83 you continue to learn on the challenges 00:19:56.86\00:20:00.30 that affect us as human beings, 00:20:00.33\00:20:04.13 the difficulties that we go through. 00:20:04.17\00:20:06.70 I wasn't born in an effluent home, you know, 00:20:06.74\00:20:10.51 but my grandfather instilled in us 00:20:10.54\00:20:13.34 the principle of Christianity. 00:20:13.38\00:20:16.31 Amen. Wow. 00:20:16.34\00:20:17.81 Who is a Christian? 00:20:17.85\00:20:20.68 And what does it mean to follow Jesus Christ? 00:20:20.72\00:20:23.42 Everyday in the evening, 00:20:23.45\00:20:25.92 after we would take care of the cows 00:20:25.95\00:20:31.16 during the day and in the evening 00:20:31.19\00:20:32.66 you sit down next to him, and he started teaching you. 00:20:32.69\00:20:36.63 He started training you in the right way, 00:20:36.67\00:20:38.67 that is why I say, 00:20:38.70\00:20:40.14 "Train a child in the right way, 00:20:40.17\00:20:42.70 and he will never depart from it." 00:20:42.74\00:20:45.61 That is why you would come to America, 00:20:45.64\00:20:48.24 different culture, 00:20:48.28\00:20:49.78 and you still find yourself in church, 00:20:49.81\00:20:51.61 that is where we met with Joy. 00:20:51.65\00:20:53.15 Wow. Yeah. 00:20:53.18\00:20:55.02 When the district was holding nutrition class, 00:20:55.05\00:20:59.62 and then Joy came to our church. 00:20:59.65\00:21:02.62 I go to at our Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:21:02.66\00:21:06.80 And then when we met with Joy, 00:21:06.83\00:21:10.27 she asked me a little bit about my background. 00:21:10.30\00:21:13.03 And I told her of my passion to see into it 00:21:13.07\00:21:17.37 that we can do something about this Farm Stew, 00:21:17.41\00:21:22.31 everything that we've talked about in Farm Stew. 00:21:22.34\00:21:24.91 Actually, Farm Stew was not registered 00:21:24.95\00:21:27.28 when we met. 00:21:27.32\00:21:28.82 We started brainstorming, 00:21:28.85\00:21:30.79 how can we bring together her ideas in nutrition 00:21:30.82\00:21:37.29 and my ideas in sanitation and water. 00:21:37.33\00:21:41.10 And then we thought about 00:21:41.13\00:21:42.63 starting an organization called Farm Stew. 00:21:42.66\00:21:46.43 And that is where we are at now. 00:21:46.47\00:21:47.80 Wow. Yes. 00:21:47.84\00:21:49.17 Praise God, it's neat, isn't it, 00:21:49.20\00:21:50.54 when you look back to see how God has led, you know, 00:21:50.57\00:21:51.94 to bring a ministry together, 00:21:51.97\00:21:53.31 the people involve to make a ministry happen. 00:21:53.34\00:21:55.08 Absolutely. 00:21:55.11\00:21:56.44 So both of you have families, 00:21:56.48\00:21:57.81 I know you're civil engineer, Jacob. 00:21:57.85\00:21:59.18 Do you have a wife and a couple of little girls? 00:21:59.21\00:22:01.35 Yes, I'm a civil engineer 00:22:01.38\00:22:03.32 with Illinois department of transportation, 00:22:03.35\00:22:06.35 project studies engineer. 00:22:06.39\00:22:09.09 I have a wife, 00:22:09.12\00:22:11.09 two little kids, Elsa and Joy. 00:22:11.13\00:22:14.46 Elsa is three years old. 00:22:14.50\00:22:16.40 She just started school. 00:22:16.43\00:22:20.10 Yes, my wife is going to school. 00:22:20.14\00:22:25.04 We are praying about it 00:22:25.07\00:22:26.78 and God is opening opportunities. 00:22:26.81\00:22:28.14 Praise the Lord. Yes. 00:22:28.18\00:22:29.51 And you too, Joy. 00:22:29.54\00:22:30.88 I know you have a family. 00:22:30.91\00:22:32.25 Yes, I have two little girls and my husband, Matt. 00:22:32.28\00:22:34.32 And actually, my oldest is almost 00:22:34.35\00:22:36.89 as tall as I am, so... 00:22:36.92\00:22:38.25 She's not very little then anymore. 00:22:38.29\00:22:40.26 Right, vegetarian didn't stunt me or her, so... 00:22:40.29\00:22:43.66 Wow. 00:22:43.69\00:22:45.49 Well, let's get into Farm Stew then. 00:22:45.53\00:22:47.43 So tell us little about... 00:22:47.46\00:22:48.80 the ministry started just a couple of years ago. 00:22:48.83\00:22:50.30 Yes. 00:22:50.33\00:22:51.67 Yeah, just walk us through that? 00:22:51.70\00:22:53.60 Yes, we have a wonderful team in Uganda. 00:22:53.64\00:22:57.07 We actually now have six staff there, 00:22:57.11\00:22:59.71 full time, and a board of directors. 00:22:59.74\00:23:02.71 They are extremely dedicated. 00:23:02.74\00:23:05.61 They've trained 13,000 people. 00:23:05.65\00:23:08.02 13,000? Yeah. 00:23:08.05\00:23:09.38 Yes, that's a lot. 00:23:09.42\00:23:10.75 And they've been invited... 00:23:10.79\00:23:12.35 mostly we go into villages deep in rural areas, 00:23:12.39\00:23:15.79 where most non-government organizations 00:23:15.82\00:23:18.16 can't get to or don't try, 00:23:18.19\00:23:20.23 but we've also been invited to hospitals, 00:23:20.26\00:23:22.96 many schools, prisons. 00:23:23.00\00:23:26.03 We were at a crisis pregnancy center last week 00:23:26.07\00:23:29.60 and it's been beautiful. 00:23:29.64\00:23:31.87 And we're working in a area that's 80% Muslim in Uganda. 00:23:31.91\00:23:35.58 And they have been very, very open to this training. 00:23:35.61\00:23:38.35 And in fact, 00:23:38.38\00:23:39.71 when I was there in November with Dr. Arlene Virgilia, 00:23:39.75\00:23:42.95 one of our board members, 00:23:42.98\00:23:44.62 we were invited back to Muslim community 00:23:44.65\00:23:47.06 where they really wanted to thank us 00:23:47.09\00:23:49.59 for the training and share the story of 00:23:49.62\00:23:52.69 how their training had made an impact. 00:23:52.73\00:23:54.06 We have a picture of that I think. 00:23:54.10\00:23:55.43 We do, yes. 00:23:55.46\00:23:56.80 That's it, isn't it? Wow. 00:23:56.83\00:23:58.17 Yes, we were there in November, 00:23:58.20\00:23:59.53 we shared with them, 00:23:59.57\00:24:00.90 really focused on plant-based nutrition. 00:24:00.94\00:24:02.27 They're holding brochures that 00:24:02.30\00:24:03.64 I would be happy to send to anyone 00:24:03.67\00:24:05.37 who wanted to contact me. 00:24:05.41\00:24:07.04 Is Dr. Arlene in here? 00:24:07.08\00:24:08.61 Dr. Arlene is in the blue shirt with the hat. 00:24:08.64\00:24:10.71 And right behind her is Edward Kawesa, 00:24:10.75\00:24:12.71 he is the Farm Stew, Uganda president. 00:24:12.75\00:24:14.42 Pulling up like a large banner or sign there. 00:24:14.45\00:24:16.35 Yes, that's a banner of our 00:24:16.38\00:24:18.05 rainbow of fruits and vegetables. 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.59 There are over two billion people on the planet 00:24:20.62\00:24:23.19 that have micronutrient deficiencies. 00:24:23.22\00:24:25.83 So explain to me what that is? 00:24:25.86\00:24:27.76 What it means is they are deficient of a particular like 00:24:27.80\00:24:30.63 vitamin or mineral. 00:24:30.67\00:24:32.20 And it's called hidden hunger 00:24:32.23\00:24:33.64 because they don't know that they are hungry, 00:24:33.67\00:24:35.54 but because of that deficiency, 00:24:35.57\00:24:37.34 their immune system is compromised. 00:24:37.37\00:24:39.67 And so they're more susceptible to illnesses, 00:24:39.71\00:24:42.68 whether it come from water or of course, 00:24:42.71\00:24:45.25 we're on the continent of Africa, 00:24:45.28\00:24:46.61 HIV AIDS is a big problem still to this day. 00:24:46.65\00:24:50.42 And so they need the strongest immune system we can build. 00:24:50.45\00:24:54.16 And God is so good. 00:24:54.19\00:24:55.66 He told us to eat that which is pleasing to the eye. 00:24:55.69\00:24:59.26 And so what is more pleasing to the eye 00:24:59.29\00:25:00.96 than the whole variety of rainbow of colors. 00:25:01.00\00:25:03.83 And interestingly, 00:25:03.87\00:25:05.27 if you eat across the rainbow color spectrum, 00:25:05.30\00:25:08.34 you get the micronutrients that you need. 00:25:08.37\00:25:10.87 And it is worth noting that these fruits are fruits 00:25:10.91\00:25:15.44 that are locally available. 00:25:15.48\00:25:17.28 That's what I was gonna ask. 00:25:17.31\00:25:18.65 Are these assessable? 00:25:18.68\00:25:20.12 Yes, something like a guava, very locally available. 00:25:20.15\00:25:25.72 Papayas, locally available. 00:25:25.75\00:25:30.53 We call them mayambes, mangoes. 00:25:30.56\00:25:32.69 Mangoes. 00:25:32.73\00:25:34.06 Yes, very locally available. 00:25:34.10\00:25:35.73 So not that they are some exotic 00:25:35.76\00:25:39.23 or transported from somewhere. 00:25:39.27\00:25:41.00 Right. 00:25:41.04\00:25:42.37 Yeah, we always focus on local foods. 00:25:42.40\00:25:44.21 Everything is local, 00:25:44.24\00:25:45.57 we're not bringing in anything except for ideas, 00:25:45.61\00:25:48.14 but what we're doing is, 00:25:48.18\00:25:49.51 trying to go back to some of the ancient ideas 00:25:49.54\00:25:51.61 as well like, for example, with mangoes, 00:25:51.65\00:25:54.48 a lot of the times, they're rotting 00:25:54.52\00:25:56.72 because the trees are just out there in the villages 00:25:56.75\00:25:58.79 and so they're dropping all ripe at the same time. 00:25:58.82\00:26:01.49 So we're trying to promote dried mangoes, 00:26:01.52\00:26:04.39 which can be a food source of vitamin A is 00:26:04.43\00:26:07.50 what's represented by that orange color 00:26:07.53\00:26:09.53 in many different natural foods that are orange. 00:26:09.56\00:26:13.10 That vitamin, it can be the difference 00:26:13.13\00:26:14.57 between life and death for a child. 00:26:14.60\00:26:15.94 Wow. 00:26:15.97\00:26:17.31 Well, yeah, that's amazing. 00:26:17.34\00:26:18.67 So you're... 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.04 Yeah, so really it's an education, isn't it, 00:26:20.08\00:26:21.74 is what this is, 00:26:21.78\00:26:23.11 educating the local people on how to live healthfully. 00:26:23.14\00:26:26.08 And the beautiful thing is, 00:26:26.11\00:26:27.45 it's local people educating local people. 00:26:27.48\00:26:29.88 So our team is 100% Ugandan. 00:26:29.92\00:26:32.82 And then we also have a team in Zimbabwe. 00:26:32.85\00:26:36.12 Right now, we don't have the funds 00:26:36.16\00:26:37.49 to be able to hire staff in Zimbabwe. 00:26:37.53\00:26:39.09 It's a bit more expensive, 00:26:39.13\00:26:40.56 but we have a very dedicated volunteer staff there 00:26:40.60\00:26:42.96 and board of directors. 00:26:43.00\00:26:44.43 In fact, there is a retired Adventist pastor, 00:26:44.47\00:26:47.57 his name is Pastor Richard Black. 00:26:47.60\00:26:49.44 He is our treasurer in Zimbabwe, 00:26:49.47\00:26:52.27 and also our treasurer in Uganda is 00:26:52.31\00:26:54.98 the retired ADRA financial director. 00:26:55.01\00:26:58.31 So we have really good systems in place to assure that 00:26:58.35\00:27:01.45 any funds directed our way are used really well. 00:27:01.48\00:27:05.42 Now you have an interesting map regarding... 00:27:05.45\00:27:06.89 Is it world hunger? Yes. 00:27:06.92\00:27:08.29 That's amazing. Yes. 00:27:08.32\00:27:10.59 This picture is one that I was exposed to decades ago 00:27:10.63\00:27:13.76 and it's really fused on my mind, 00:27:13.80\00:27:16.30 not only the children's faces but the areas of hunger. 00:27:16.33\00:27:20.64 So you see the darker colors... 00:27:20.67\00:27:22.00 What's the difference in the color? 00:27:22.04\00:27:23.37 Yeah, the darker colors are where food insecurity 00:27:23.41\00:27:25.81 or hunger is more severe 00:27:25.84\00:27:27.78 and so you can see the continent of Africa... 00:27:27.81\00:27:29.81 I was just gonna say that. It's tremendous. 00:27:29.84\00:27:31.18 ..is really struggling. 00:27:31.21\00:27:32.55 And China, India are kind of... 00:27:32.58\00:27:33.92 Or Asia. 00:27:33.95\00:27:35.28 Yeah, there are some countries within Asia 00:27:35.32\00:27:36.75 that are also struggling with hunger. 00:27:36.79\00:27:39.29 But the red is the worst, is that what you're saying? 00:27:39.32\00:27:40.96 The red is the worst 00:27:40.99\00:27:42.32 and the orange is the next stage. 00:27:42.36\00:27:43.69 Wow. 00:27:43.73\00:27:45.16 So and we also have an image about lifespan 00:27:45.19\00:27:47.53 and wealth that really shares this as well. 00:27:47.56\00:27:50.80 This is the graph where it shows the life expectancy 00:27:50.83\00:27:54.80 and the blue figures are Africa. 00:27:54.84\00:27:58.34 The orange figures are... 00:27:58.37\00:28:00.11 I'm sorry, the red figures are Asia. 00:28:00.14\00:28:01.78 Okay. 00:28:01.81\00:28:03.14 And so on the bottom, it's their income, 00:28:03.18\00:28:05.28 and on the side, it's their life expectancy. 00:28:05.31\00:28:07.98 So you can see that Africa is quite a bit lower 00:28:08.02\00:28:11.79 both in income and life expectancy. 00:28:11.82\00:28:14.26 Asia still lags behind Europe and the Americas. 00:28:14.29\00:28:18.53 So that's, kind of, 00:28:18.56\00:28:19.89 our target is villages in Africa and Asia. 00:28:19.93\00:28:22.80 And 75% of the world's poor live in rural villages 00:28:22.83\00:28:26.53 in Africa and Asia, 00:28:26.57\00:28:27.90 and 70% of them are subsistence farmers. 00:28:27.94\00:28:30.57 So that's why we start with farming practices. 00:28:30.61\00:28:33.44 You said 75, I mean, 00:28:33.48\00:28:34.81 you just rattled that number off 00:28:34.84\00:28:36.18 so fast, but 75%... 00:28:36.21\00:28:37.88 Of the world's poor... 00:28:37.91\00:28:39.25 Of the world... 00:28:39.28\00:28:40.62 Yes. Oh, that's incredible. 00:28:40.65\00:28:42.05 And, you know, these are people that don't make the headlines. 00:28:42.08\00:28:44.92 Like I know here, you know, you're in a town of 500 people. 00:28:44.95\00:28:48.09 I'm from a town of... Thompsonville as well. 00:28:48.12\00:28:50.13 I'm from a town of 700 people. 00:28:50.16\00:28:52.06 We never make the news, right? 00:28:52.09\00:28:53.46 Oh, you're right. 00:28:53.50\00:28:54.83 And, but these are people that they're not on the news, 00:28:54.86\00:28:57.07 nobody really pays attention. 00:28:57.10\00:28:58.93 But they are the poor of the world 00:28:58.97\00:29:01.04 and they are the least of these 00:29:01.07\00:29:02.40 that Jesus tells us to focus upon. 00:29:02.44\00:29:04.77 And He's gonna ask us when we get to heaven, 00:29:04.81\00:29:06.64 what we did? 00:29:06.68\00:29:08.24 So you educate them in part of what you do in the training 00:29:08.28\00:29:11.65 and the local people educate local people, correct. 00:29:11.68\00:29:13.95 Exactly. 00:29:13.98\00:29:15.32 So they would educate in nutrition 00:29:15.35\00:29:16.75 and the different techniques of farming in what type? 00:29:16.79\00:29:20.92 Well, we do a big component on soy... 00:29:20.96\00:29:23.32 Okay. ..nutrition, so... 00:29:23.36\00:29:24.69 All right, we're getting close to this little prop, all right. 00:29:24.73\00:29:26.06 Yeah, I know Greg's getting excited. 00:29:26.09\00:29:27.60 Greg's excited. 00:29:27.63\00:29:29.20 So one of the things we talk about is the seed. 00:29:29.23\00:29:32.23 Now God told us in Genesis 1:29, 00:29:32.27\00:29:35.50 He gave us the first dietary guidelines 00:29:35.54\00:29:37.61 and He told us to eat seeds 00:29:37.64\00:29:39.41 and the fruits from the trees and plants. 00:29:39.44\00:29:41.94 And so we talk about soybeans are a type of seed. 00:29:41.98\00:29:46.41 And this is a treasure trove, it has... 00:29:46.45\00:29:50.32 So those are dried soybeans that people can have. 00:29:50.35\00:29:51.69 These are dried soybeans and with this amount, 00:29:51.72\00:29:53.66 you can make about a quart of soymilk. 00:29:53.69\00:29:56.09 So soy is by far the cheapest best quality protein 00:29:56.12\00:30:00.06 that the poor can afford. 00:30:00.10\00:30:01.76 Most of the poor are actually vegetarians 00:30:01.80\00:30:03.87 or even vegans globally. 00:30:03.90\00:30:05.90 And it's not always by choice 00:30:05.93\00:30:07.70 but even if they're raising animals, 00:30:07.74\00:30:09.70 it's their cash crop, right? 00:30:09.74\00:30:11.34 Yeah, just gonna ask you that, Jacob, 00:30:11.37\00:30:12.71 did your family grow soybeans or your friends, 00:30:12.74\00:30:15.94 I'm sure somebody did. 00:30:15.98\00:30:17.31 Yes, but, you know, education is very good. 00:30:17.35\00:30:20.98 Okay. 00:30:21.02\00:30:22.35 We would grow that and at times 00:30:22.38\00:30:24.55 just boil it and eat it. 00:30:24.59\00:30:26.25 Not knowing that as we do that, 00:30:26.29\00:30:28.09 we kill the good nutrients that 00:30:28.12\00:30:30.99 we are supposed to get from them. 00:30:31.03\00:30:32.36 You just grow it, you would boil it, eat it. 00:30:32.39\00:30:34.16 Yes. 00:30:34.20\00:30:35.53 So Farm Stew teaches the locals that 00:30:35.56\00:30:40.67 we can produce milk from Farm Stew. 00:30:40.70\00:30:43.37 A lot more other products that can get from... 00:30:43.41\00:30:45.51 From soybeans. 00:30:45.54\00:30:46.88 ..from soybeans. 00:30:46.91\00:30:48.24 And we actually do want to boil it because... 00:30:48.28\00:30:50.48 but we want to soak it first. 00:30:50.51\00:30:52.88 And the reason being is that God, 00:30:52.91\00:30:55.68 I believe put preservatives in the seeds. 00:30:55.72\00:30:58.15 A lot of nutritionists call it anti-nutritional factors, 00:30:58.19\00:31:00.86 phytic acid. 00:31:00.89\00:31:02.22 There are some controversy in our country about soy, 00:31:02.26\00:31:04.06 but I believe it's because 00:31:04.09\00:31:05.59 we're not preparing it correctly. 00:31:05.63\00:31:07.50 If we soak it overnight, 00:31:07.53\00:31:09.06 and the water goes all the way into to the core of the seed, 00:31:09.10\00:31:11.63 it activates the enzymes that 00:31:11.67\00:31:13.74 break down the God's preservatives. 00:31:13.77\00:31:16.04 Amen. 00:31:16.07\00:31:17.41 And how I like to think of it is, 00:31:17.44\00:31:19.01 it's really like baptizing the seeds, 00:31:19.04\00:31:21.78 because when they get dry and hard like that, 00:31:21.81\00:31:24.48 there's sort of things that are like toxins. 00:31:24.51\00:31:26.85 And so when we get baptized, 00:31:26.88\00:31:28.68 and it soaks to the very core of our being, 00:31:28.72\00:31:31.12 sin comes out. 00:31:31.15\00:31:32.52 When it goes, the toxins go out 00:31:32.55\00:31:34.76 and then you can consume, 00:31:34.79\00:31:36.32 and really absorb all the nutrients. 00:31:36.36\00:31:38.53 Wow. 00:31:38.56\00:31:39.89 So when you soak it over night, 00:31:39.93\00:31:42.56 and then even if you do boil it, 00:31:42.60\00:31:43.97 you still get the nutrients? 00:31:44.00\00:31:45.33 Yeah, you pour off that water 00:31:45.37\00:31:47.24 and then you boil it with fresh water. 00:31:47.27\00:31:49.00 And it's so quite a simple process, 00:31:49.04\00:31:50.71 I think we have a picture of a woman making soymilk 00:31:50.74\00:31:53.91 in this very apparatus which Greg could make himself. 00:31:53.94\00:31:57.48 That is totally amazing, 00:31:57.51\00:31:59.55 that I don't know that I could but I'm sure I could. 00:31:59.58\00:32:01.55 Wow. 00:32:01.58\00:32:02.92 So this is someone making soymilk using a... 00:32:02.95\00:32:05.75 Make sure I get all the words right, 00:32:05.79\00:32:07.12 this is a mortar? 00:32:07.16\00:32:08.49 Yes. 00:32:08.52\00:32:09.86 And make sure I... 00:32:09.89\00:32:11.23 Pestle. Pestle. 00:32:11.26\00:32:12.59 Yes. Okay. 00:32:12.63\00:32:13.96 So you put the soybeans in? Yes. 00:32:14.00\00:32:15.33 So they're boiled, oh, no, they're soaked. 00:32:15.36\00:32:17.37 They've been soaked for 12 hours 00:32:17.40\00:32:19.33 and then you can either cook them for half an hour 00:32:19.37\00:32:22.10 or you can mash them first and then cook them. 00:32:22.14\00:32:25.37 Africans generally drink their milk hot in like a tea form. 00:32:25.41\00:32:29.44 And so they have been pounding it first, 00:32:29.48\00:32:32.85 and then adding back in the water 00:32:32.88\00:32:34.98 that makes it the milk 00:32:35.02\00:32:36.35 and then they boil it for half an hour. 00:32:36.38\00:32:37.72 And all of those things, 00:32:37.75\00:32:39.09 all those steps are important 00:32:39.12\00:32:40.46 for bio availability of the nutrients. 00:32:40.49\00:32:43.76 And we use these training cards, 00:32:43.79\00:32:45.46 they're available on our website on FarmStew.org. 00:32:45.49\00:32:48.36 So anybody could take one of those training cards, 00:32:48.40\00:32:50.67 there's a Bible study that goes with it. 00:32:50.70\00:32:52.13 Amen. 00:32:52.17\00:32:53.50 And then they can learn 00:32:53.54\00:32:54.87 how to make it in their own community. 00:32:54.90\00:32:56.50 So, Jacob, is there lot of shock 00:32:56.54\00:32:58.24 when someone says, 00:32:58.27\00:32:59.74 "Oh, you can make milk with these sort of things." 00:32:59.77\00:33:02.81 It is. 00:33:02.84\00:33:04.18 Yeah, it's like, "What!" 00:33:04.21\00:33:05.55 What the common man knows is that 00:33:05.58\00:33:08.15 milk come from cows. 00:33:08.18\00:33:09.78 Oh, yeah. Full stop. 00:33:09.82\00:33:11.79 Not knowing that God, 00:33:11.82\00:33:14.59 in His mysterious ways provided to us 00:33:14.62\00:33:18.39 through a lot more other means. 00:33:18.43\00:33:23.16 That is why, 00:33:23.20\00:33:24.87 He made the Garden of Eden perfect. 00:33:24.90\00:33:29.34 Before He placed us in the Garden of Eden, 00:33:29.37\00:33:31.57 He made sure that the Garden of Eden was perfect. 00:33:31.61\00:33:38.01 It's like that we did not lack anything. 00:33:38.05\00:33:39.71 That's right. 00:33:39.75\00:33:41.08 But out of sin, 00:33:41.12\00:33:45.39 our minds have been changed to think that probably, 00:33:45.42\00:33:50.53 you know, for you to have milk 00:33:50.56\00:33:53.16 you just have to have a cow, you know. 00:33:53.19\00:33:56.40 And, you know, lately even in the studies, 00:33:56.43\00:33:59.10 we find that cow milk has a lot of disadvantages. 00:33:59.13\00:34:04.27 That is why it is very necessary for us 00:34:04.31\00:34:06.04 to focus our training on agricultural produce. 00:34:06.07\00:34:08.68 Yes. 00:34:08.71\00:34:10.05 One of them is soy. 00:34:10.08\00:34:12.81 And 80% or more of Africans are lactose intolerant. 00:34:12.85\00:34:18.85 Really? 00:34:18.89\00:34:20.22 So not only do you have 00:34:20.26\00:34:21.59 the issues of contamination in the milk 00:34:21.62\00:34:23.22 because often the animals are consuming 00:34:23.26\00:34:25.19 various things like, 00:34:25.23\00:34:27.00 the moldy grains that are also quite toxic, 00:34:27.03\00:34:30.83 but also they can't really even observe 00:34:30.87\00:34:33.30 the carbohydrates in the milk, so soymilk is a real blessing. 00:34:33.34\00:34:37.44 And, yeah, they think they've been tricked sometimes. 00:34:37.47\00:34:39.54 They say, "There's a green cow, 00:34:39.57\00:34:41.28 where did you get it?" 00:34:41.31\00:34:44.21 And it's also so much... 00:34:44.25\00:34:45.81 you can make, with one kilo of soybeans, 00:34:45.85\00:34:48.82 you can make six quarts of milk. 00:34:48.85\00:34:51.49 And to buy one cup of milk, it's so expensive. 00:34:51.52\00:34:55.12 Most children never get a cup of real milk. 00:34:55.16\00:34:58.03 So this must be a daily process then, is that right? 00:34:58.06\00:35:00.16 Or there are lot of refrigerators to... 00:35:00.20\00:35:02.63 There's no electricity or anything. 00:35:02.66\00:35:04.00 Yeah, okay. 00:35:04.03\00:35:05.37 So no electricity, so this is very rural. 00:35:05.40\00:35:06.74 That's a privilege. Yes. 00:35:06.77\00:35:08.10 that's a privilege like flush toilets. 00:35:08.14\00:35:09.47 Yes. Yes. 00:35:09.50\00:35:10.84 That's a privilege. 00:35:10.87\00:35:12.21 So this is the daily process then... 00:35:12.24\00:35:13.58 Yes. 00:35:13.61\00:35:14.94 ..in villages, many villages. 00:35:14.98\00:35:16.31 Well, and what's happening now is that 00:35:16.34\00:35:17.68 the women are taking the by-product from the soy. 00:35:17.71\00:35:19.05 We squeeze it in a cloth, 00:35:19.08\00:35:20.42 kind of like squeezing the udder of a cow 00:35:20.45\00:35:22.45 and there is a by-product left over 00:35:22.48\00:35:23.95 that's very high in fiber, 00:35:23.99\00:35:25.35 and protein, and micronutrients. 00:35:25.39\00:35:27.12 And so we take that 00:35:27.16\00:35:28.49 and make a traditional African food called "Mandazi," 00:35:28.52\00:35:31.76 but this is soy mandazi, 00:35:31.79\00:35:33.40 so we chop up a rainbow of vegetables and add it. 00:35:33.43\00:35:37.27 So we are trying to get our rainbow 00:35:37.30\00:35:38.63 and our soy in one food. 00:35:38.67\00:35:40.04 And there is numbers of women 00:35:40.07\00:35:42.00 that are actually making a living, 00:35:42.04\00:35:43.44 Florence is one of them, 00:35:43.47\00:35:44.81 I sat with in November and she... 00:35:44.84\00:35:48.04 her husband is a elder in our church 00:35:48.08\00:35:50.31 and they are sending their kids to school 00:35:50.35\00:35:52.31 with the money she is making, making soy mandazi. 00:35:52.35\00:35:55.02 Amen. 00:35:55.05\00:35:56.38 So that goes to the enterprise part of Stew... 00:35:56.42\00:35:57.75 Exactly. 00:35:57.79\00:35:59.12 ..that you are talking about in that acronym... 00:35:59.15\00:36:00.49 Exactly. 00:36:00.52\00:36:01.86 E for enterprise, that's great. 00:36:01.89\00:36:03.22 Exactly. So this is amazing. 00:36:03.26\00:36:04.59 I'm thinking, just a little soybean, 00:36:04.63\00:36:05.96 you know, small maybe cast aside 00:36:05.99\00:36:08.10 or boiled and just eaten. 00:36:08.13\00:36:09.60 If done properly, you can, it's nutritious. 00:36:09.63\00:36:13.17 Yes. 00:36:13.20\00:36:14.54 It's much more economical. Yes. 00:36:14.57\00:36:16.20 It's sanitary and it's... 00:36:16.24\00:36:19.27 helps to provide for your family. 00:36:19.31\00:36:21.38 Exactly. That's amazing. 00:36:21.41\00:36:23.08 Maybe you can pull up the picture 00:36:23.11\00:36:24.68 where we have the kitchen that they are... 00:36:24.71\00:36:26.28 Okay. 00:36:26.31\00:36:27.65 Yeah, let's look at that. 00:36:27.68\00:36:29.02 ..cooking and... 00:36:29.05\00:36:30.39 They're cooking, okay. Yeah. 00:36:30.42\00:36:31.75 So this is one of our typical classes, 00:36:31.79\00:36:33.36 you can see the stove 00:36:33.39\00:36:35.62 so to speak is a three stone fire... 00:36:35.66\00:36:37.73 It's amazing. See that. 00:36:37.76\00:36:39.09 And that's Fiona, 00:36:39.13\00:36:40.46 training with her Farm Stew Uganda shirt. 00:36:40.50\00:36:41.83 Okay. 00:36:41.86\00:36:43.43 You know, that's incredible, you know, and again, 00:36:43.47\00:36:45.13 that's where we have a stove here in the states, 00:36:45.17\00:36:46.77 that's a privilege, isn't it? 00:36:46.80\00:36:49.54 I would stress that enough. 00:36:49.57\00:36:51.97 So what are they cooking? 00:36:52.01\00:36:53.68 Right there, they are boiling the soybeans 00:36:53.71\00:36:55.54 and then they are also making the soy milk and then, 00:36:55.58\00:36:57.91 I think, we have another picture 00:36:57.95\00:36:59.28 where Betty has made tofu. 00:36:59.31\00:37:01.02 Oh, wow. Oh, nice. 00:37:01.05\00:37:02.38 That was the next picture, right? 00:37:02.42\00:37:03.75 Yeah, that's quite a neat story because honestly, 00:37:03.79\00:37:06.29 when I first went to Uganda, 00:37:06.32\00:37:07.72 I didn't want to get complicated 00:37:07.76\00:37:09.22 and bring in a lot of foreign ideas. 00:37:09.26\00:37:10.86 I knew people would want milk 00:37:10.89\00:37:12.23 and I knew they needed the protein. 00:37:12.26\00:37:14.36 But Betty raised her hand on the first day I met her... 00:37:14.40\00:37:17.27 Is Betty in the green shirt? 00:37:17.30\00:37:18.63 Betty's in the green, yes. Okay. 00:37:18.67\00:37:20.00 And she raised her hand when I said, 00:37:20.04\00:37:22.24 "Does anybody know about making soy milk?" 00:37:22.27\00:37:23.71 And she says, 00:37:23.74\00:37:25.07 "Yes, and I know how to make soy meat as well." 00:37:25.11\00:37:27.94 I said, "Who is this woman? 00:37:27.98\00:37:29.44 I want to meet her." 00:37:29.48\00:37:31.15 And sure enough she had been trained at Bugema University, 00:37:31.18\00:37:34.02 an Adventist university nearby in hotel management. 00:37:34.05\00:37:38.05 So she is who introduced the soy mandazi, 00:37:38.09\00:37:40.32 I can't take credit for the recipe, 00:37:40.36\00:37:41.69 but it's delicious 00:37:41.72\00:37:43.09 and she calls this soy scrambled eggs instead of tofu. 00:37:43.12\00:37:46.90 Okay. 00:37:46.93\00:37:48.26 Which again, the animal protein, 00:37:48.30\00:37:49.63 a lot of people 00:37:49.66\00:37:51.00 want to be able to give their kids animal protein 00:37:51.03\00:37:53.64 and they almost feel guilty and shameful 00:37:53.67\00:37:55.80 that they can't feed the kids the best. 00:37:55.84\00:37:57.31 I mean, they can't afford it. Right. 00:37:57.34\00:37:59.07 But in fact, nutritionally tofu 00:37:59.11\00:38:00.98 and the scrambled eggs are very similar, 00:38:01.01\00:38:03.24 so there's no false advertising there. 00:38:03.28\00:38:04.71 This is as good for you, 00:38:04.75\00:38:06.55 if not actually better than the eggs. 00:38:06.58\00:38:09.02 Wow. 00:38:09.05\00:38:10.39 Then you had a picture of something 00:38:10.42\00:38:11.75 with the school garden. 00:38:11.79\00:38:13.12 Yes. 00:38:13.15\00:38:14.49 Yes. Yes. 00:38:14.52\00:38:15.86 So we are also teaching gardening. 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.23 Maybe you want to talk about that. 00:38:17.26\00:38:18.59 Yes, yes. 00:38:18.63\00:38:19.96 This is Edward, our president in Uganda. 00:38:20.00\00:38:23.33 Okay. 00:38:23.37\00:38:24.70 And the school is a population of 1,200, right. 00:38:24.73\00:38:28.07 Wow. 00:38:28.10\00:38:29.44 And we grow gardens just like that. 00:38:29.47\00:38:32.34 Those are kales. Nice. 00:38:32.37\00:38:33.71 I think... 00:38:33.74\00:38:35.08 They look beautiful and healthy. 00:38:35.11\00:38:36.44 And healthy. 00:38:36.48\00:38:37.81 Look at that dark soil. It looks great. 00:38:37.85\00:38:39.18 Yes, that's how we know it, 00:38:39.21\00:38:40.55 but in Africa we call it sukuma wiki. 00:38:40.58\00:38:41.92 Okay. 00:38:41.95\00:38:43.28 Sukuma wiki? 00:38:43.32\00:38:44.65 Sukuma wiki means that it is a staple food 00:38:44.69\00:38:46.25 that pushes you through the week. 00:38:46.29\00:38:47.62 Okay. 00:38:47.66\00:38:48.99 It gives you extra boost of energy. 00:38:49.02\00:38:50.36 Yes, yes, quite nutritious and... 00:38:50.39\00:38:53.33 So is this an Adventist school? 00:38:53.36\00:38:54.70 Yes. Yes. 00:38:54.73\00:38:56.06 And it's 80% attended by Muslims 00:38:56.10\00:38:58.87 and they often have about 100 children each year 00:38:58.90\00:39:02.64 that get to know Jesus 00:39:02.67\00:39:04.47 and come to the Lord through baptism. 00:39:04.51\00:39:06.54 What a tremendous ministry. 00:39:06.57\00:39:07.91 Yes. It's incredible. 00:39:07.94\00:39:09.28 Their headmaster is Mark Quiesa 00:39:09.31\00:39:11.31 and he is actually our board president in Uganda. 00:39:11.35\00:39:14.05 Wow. 00:39:14.08\00:39:15.42 So I've just been so blessed by getting to know 00:39:15.45\00:39:17.79 this family of faith globally. 00:39:17.82\00:39:19.85 Really they are powerful witnesses 00:39:19.89\00:39:22.42 in their own community 00:39:22.46\00:39:23.79 and they want to reach out more and more. 00:39:23.83\00:39:25.46 Amen. 00:39:25.49\00:39:26.83 How many acres do you have at the school for gardens? 00:39:26.86\00:39:29.70 Because that was just, I'm sure just a small plot. 00:39:29.73\00:39:31.43 Yeah. 00:39:31.47\00:39:33.03 I think, it's probably about half an acre there. 00:39:33.07\00:39:35.17 It's not a big garden... 00:39:35.20\00:39:36.64 No, okay. 00:39:36.67\00:39:38.01 But we are just trying to use these farming practices 00:39:38.04\00:39:40.98 that are taught by Zimbabwean organization 00:39:41.01\00:39:43.45 actually called Foundations for Farming, 00:39:43.48\00:39:45.38 the foundation being Jesus Christ. 00:39:45.41\00:39:47.25 And we're trying, 00:39:47.28\00:39:48.62 again not to send a lot of things 00:39:48.65\00:39:50.39 from America or even ideas. 00:39:50.42\00:39:52.35 This is a home grown African agricultural curriculum 00:39:52.39\00:39:56.29 that is Bible based and evidence based. 00:39:56.32\00:39:58.79 So we are... 00:39:58.83\00:40:00.16 I actually got to train there 00:40:00.20\00:40:01.53 last March in Zimbabwe and then, 00:40:01.56\00:40:04.43 immediately thereafter 00:40:04.47\00:40:05.80 I was a health evangelist with "It Is Written." 00:40:05.83\00:40:08.20 So that was a real treat. 00:40:08.24\00:40:09.80 Amen. Oh, amen. 00:40:09.84\00:40:11.27 I know you have a graphic, I think of the seed, is it? 00:40:11.31\00:40:13.98 The three parts... 00:40:14.01\00:40:15.34 Yes. 00:40:15.38\00:40:16.71 Of a seed. Yes. 00:40:16.75\00:40:18.08 Explain that to us? 00:40:18.11\00:40:19.45 Well, it's one of the ways 00:40:19.48\00:40:20.82 we introduce the gospel through our curriculum 00:40:20.85\00:40:22.18 because we are working with subsistence farmers... 00:40:22.22\00:40:23.55 There we go. 00:40:23.59\00:40:24.92 And so on the bottom part we demonstrate to them 00:40:24.95\00:40:26.82 that there is no seed on the planet 00:40:26.86\00:40:29.76 that isn't a picture of God, 00:40:29.79\00:40:31.59 the three in one God. 00:40:31.63\00:40:32.99 Wow, that's deep. Yeah. 00:40:33.03\00:40:34.70 And you know, Romans 1:20 just tells us that, 00:40:34.73\00:40:38.37 "The invisible attributes of God are seen 00:40:38.40\00:40:40.77 through everything He created and that His Godhead is seen." 00:40:40.80\00:40:44.77 And so we really hope to plant 00:40:44.81\00:40:47.28 in the minds of all these farmers 00:40:47.31\00:40:48.68 that whenever they hold a seed 00:40:48.71\00:40:50.05 and they are going to plant it that 00:40:50.08\00:40:51.98 it's a picture of the Trinity. 00:40:52.01\00:40:54.08 And then also we want to emphasize to them 00:40:54.12\00:40:57.09 that eating the whole seed 00:40:57.12\00:40:58.85 or the whole grain is actually much healthier for them 00:40:58.89\00:41:01.89 than when they are just eating one part of it 00:41:01.92\00:41:03.96 that's separated out 00:41:03.99\00:41:05.33 by the industrialized food system. 00:41:05.36\00:41:06.90 Amen. 00:41:06.93\00:41:08.40 And then on the top we use Ezekiel 4:9 00:41:08.43\00:41:11.43 to show a plant-based nutrition recipe 00:41:11.47\00:41:15.10 that God gave the prophet Ezekiel. 00:41:15.14\00:41:17.31 And as a nutritionist, 00:41:17.34\00:41:18.67 it's one more confirmation to me that God is amazing 00:41:18.71\00:41:22.61 because the ratio is perfect 00:41:22.64\00:41:24.98 for really the protein absorbability 00:41:25.01\00:41:27.95 and there's other factors in just the specific ingredients 00:41:27.98\00:41:31.39 but also God told Ezekiel to soak the grains, 00:41:31.42\00:41:35.02 I believe, He told him to soak. 00:41:35.06\00:41:36.42 He said to put in a vessel, I believe, 00:41:36.46\00:41:38.49 there was water in that vessel. 00:41:38.53\00:41:39.86 So when you soak the grains, you increase the nutrients. 00:41:39.89\00:41:43.60 And it's a very traditional African practice to soak... 00:41:43.63\00:41:46.33 Is it really? 00:41:46.37\00:41:47.70 ..grains. Yes. 00:41:47.74\00:41:49.07 But it's been left behind often. 00:41:49.10\00:41:51.81 Correct. 00:41:51.84\00:41:53.17 People tend to move to faster way of doing things 00:41:56.08\00:41:59.51 instead of looking at... 00:41:59.55\00:42:01.55 Yeah, very true. 00:42:01.58\00:42:02.92 ..what God provided us with. 00:42:02.95\00:42:05.45 And that is what Farm Stew focus at. 00:42:05.49\00:42:08.92 Let's get back to what God created. 00:42:08.96\00:42:12.79 Actually we have a video about that as well, 00:42:12.83\00:42:15.23 we might wanna clip that in. 00:42:15.26\00:42:16.60 All right. 00:42:16.63\00:42:17.97 Well, let's go to that video now. 00:42:18.00\00:42:20.54 Joy missioned about the life 00:42:20.57\00:42:23.54 of my late grandmother called Tabitha, 00:42:23.57\00:42:26.37 who lived up to 115 years. 00:42:26.41\00:42:29.88 What composed of her diet, what was her diet? 00:42:29.91\00:42:33.75 She was feeding, eating soaked grains. 00:42:33.78\00:42:38.69 Sorghum, maize, millet, 00:42:38.72\00:42:42.39 pumpkin seeds, unpeeled sweet potatoes. 00:42:42.42\00:42:47.06 We talked about eating the whole grain. 00:42:47.10\00:42:51.30 So for her she was... 00:42:51.33\00:42:52.93 we grew up feeding on unpeeled, you know, sweet potatoes. 00:42:52.97\00:42:58.34 Anyways, don't get surprised 00:42:58.37\00:43:00.44 if I also live up to 115 or 120. 00:43:00.48\00:43:05.11 That's a line I'm, that's the diet I was fed on. 00:43:05.15\00:43:09.55 But going back to the ancient ways, 00:43:09.58\00:43:14.02 I think that is what Farm Stew is coming 00:43:14.06\00:43:18.49 and bringing on board that we need to come back 00:43:18.53\00:43:22.26 and go back to the foundations. 00:43:22.30\00:43:24.87 And I think God is happy. 00:43:24.90\00:43:26.84 I think God is happy 00:43:26.87\00:43:28.20 when His children come to realize, 00:43:28.24\00:43:30.37 come to a point of, you know, 00:43:30.41\00:43:31.94 coming back to the ancient ways of the foundation. 00:43:31.97\00:43:36.51 By so doing we touch God's hand, 00:43:36.54\00:43:38.55 can you imagine? 00:43:38.58\00:43:40.25 We touch God's hand when we took His way. 00:43:40.28\00:43:43.95 Amen. Yeah, amen. 00:43:43.99\00:43:46.92 Just like the testament that we shared 00:43:46.96\00:43:49.56 when we're in Nairobi, 00:43:49.59\00:43:51.39 committed transformation begins with an individual. 00:43:51.43\00:43:55.13 It's you. 00:43:55.16\00:43:56.60 It has to begin with me, 00:43:56.63\00:43:59.93 not us but me. 00:43:59.97\00:44:02.70 Am I doing it at my home? 00:44:02.74\00:44:05.14 Am I doing it... 00:44:05.17\00:44:06.51 Am I eating the diet 00:44:06.54\00:44:07.94 that I am teaching other people to eat to what to feed on? 00:44:07.98\00:44:12.98 Well, we came back from Nairobi, 00:44:13.01\00:44:14.85 there are some things I've told my family, 00:44:14.88\00:44:16.65 I sat down with my family. 00:44:16.69\00:44:18.19 I said, "As for this, as for this, as for this, 00:44:18.22\00:44:21.99 we do not want to have, you know, 00:44:22.02\00:44:24.79 aflatoxin issues here around." 00:44:24.83\00:44:27.96 We shall be talking about more of aflatoxin, 00:44:28.00\00:44:30.90 but we are going back to foundations 00:44:30.93\00:44:33.27 and we'll say bye-bye to aflatoxin 00:44:33.30\00:44:36.60 even in our community. 00:44:36.64\00:44:38.14 It's coming. 00:44:38.17\00:44:40.38 Amen.
