I know that when
you were a youngster,

you said that I read was

Now that caught my attention,

And I know it when
you were really young,

you had some health issues.

Tell us about the health issues

that have
challenged you in the past?

At age six I
contracted a disease

which medically is fatal.

It is called encephalitis.

It's a disease
that attacks your brain

and closes your brain down.

During the course of
contracting that at school,

I was rushed to hospital
and the parents were called.
00:09:16.18\00:09:19.45
And once a diagnosis was given
the medical profession said,

there would be little chance
00:09:24.56\00:09:25.89
that your son will survive this.
00:09:25.93\00:09:28.26
So you were six years old.
00:09:28.30\00:09:29.63
I was six years. Young lad.
00:09:29.66\00:09:31.00
Absolutely, I didn't know Jesus,
00:09:31.03\00:09:32.53
but Jesus knew me.

Yes.

And so my parents actually
called a local Catholic priest

to come to bedside
to give the last rites.

Oh, at six years
old. At six years old.

Father could still
remember at that age
00:09:45.95\00:09:49.75
even now if he was alive,

the screams are coming
out of the medical ward

as doctors put
a lumbar puncture.

It's a needle they put
at the back of your spine

and endeavored to draw
the poison in your blood

from this infection out.

And they did that to
you. Absolutely, yeah.

And he said the screen
would have measured 6.5

on the Richter scale.

It was just an amazing, Mollie,

because during the
course of the 24 hours

as 24 hours went to 48 hours,
the doctors still suggested

that won't come through that.

But over a period of a
week, I'm still in a coma.

One week went to two weeks,
which now went to three weeks.

After three weeks the
doctors told my parents

that I will survive
this but will be a vegetable,

the infection had
closed the brain down.

And the best I could hope
for was just intravenous feeding

and would be paralyzed.

So a vegetable at six years old.

And so over a
period of the discussions

they had with my
condition to with my parents,

they said during the
course of the procedure

my heart stopped,

they said to my parents
your son was clinically dead

for a period of
two and half minutes.

There would be no medical reason

he would be alive today,

we don't know how that happened.

So first and foremost
you're not supposed to survive

encephalitis to start with.

And then your
heart stops. Absolutely.

And they would
say it's a miracle

that your son is alive today.

But the best miracles is
still yet to come, Mollie,

the most
amazing miracles to come

is six months in the hospital
now coming out of the coma.

That six months in hospital now
went to one year to two years.

During the
course, as a youngster

I can still
remember, I could not walk.
00:11:52.41\00:11:54.68
Still being intravenously
fed, could not talk.

I was still remembering
the parents coming to the ward,

dressed like beekeepers.

They could not touch you

because of the
transferring of that infection,

even the doctors as well,
a very sterile environment.

Well, two years
went to three years.

And so I was in
this isolated ward

for a long, long time.

And over a period of
four, five years later

I came out of hospital,

the issue is that I certainly

couldn't still not walk or talk,

but now I was
beginning to stutter.

Stutter, so that
would have made you what,

eleven or twelve years old,
when you came out of hospital.

And of course I missed
all the schooling from them.

I didn't know Jesus

but Jesus
certainly knew me and...

Oh, absolutely
and sometimes we think

that God has abandoned you

at the most
difficult trials you've got,

darkest moments you go through,

but he's never
abandons, he's always with you,

he's a captain of
your cheering squad,

he will never leave you
or what he says forsake you.

He means what he
says. Absolutely.

But within a week of
going back to school,

now I'm a large boy going to
a kind of a kindergarten class.

And could you speak, you
couldn't speak, just stutter?

I could hardly walk,
but I was stuttering now.

But within a week or
two going back to school,

I went to a local
shop to buy a drink.

That was during school

with all the
other school children

and as I was in a
shop to buy a drink,

a stranger was in
that shop as well.

And he said would
you like an ice cream?

And of course, parents
said don't talk to strangers.

But sometimes the young
people don't know basically

when the think they do.

And you're eleven
or twelve years old.

Yeah.

I said to the stranger
who was very unkempt, untidy.

I said yeah, I
love an ice cream.

So he canvassed over
three scoops of ice cream

and a huge block of chocolate.

And said, you can have these,

but young man you
got to come in my car

and you can have them.

And so I got in the
car, and the car speed off.

Well, I was
enjoying the ice cream

and by the time the
chocolate was coming,

no school was in sight.

I was in the
middle of a remote area

in the suburbs
of New South Wales,

in Australia.

Yeah, how long have you been
out of hospital at this time?

Only matter of weeks.
Only a matter of a few weeks.

You've been
confined to the hospital,

come home and in
just a few weeks,

you're abducted.

And look, three
scoops of ice cream

after you spend all
of your years in hospital

and big blocks of chocolates
is very enticing to a young man

just out of hospital.

By now when the
chocolate is finished

and the ice creams are done,
I'm saying please take me home.

You know
something's wrong. Sure.

But of course the area, I
mean it's not familiar to me,

but was familiar to the driver.

During the course of the
day that police were now called,

I'm being missing.

And then began one
of the biggest searchers

for a missing young
child back in those days,

which was in
Australia's history.

What it transpired was
he took me to a remote area

of New South
Wales into bush land

where you can scream
6.4 on the Richter scale

and they never ever hear you.

He got over off his car
and he pulled out his knife

and his knife was huge.

And came around the
side door and pulled out,

pulled me out screaming.

And he got the knife

and he just ripped down
the front of your clothes

and ripped the skin and
then he sexually abused me.

So sad. Yeah.

And even now I
didn't know Jesus,

Jesus knew me.

Sometimes we're
put into darkness

to appreciate his light.

for some hours and drove off.

So I was left in a
remote area bush land

unlikely I will be found again,

he had left and
thought I was dead.

Well, so happened
that during the course

where the night hunters
were in that remote region

hunting our national
animal, the kangaroo.

In the evening
and they came across

what they thought
was a baby kangaroo,

they call them joeys.

And one of the hunters came down

and put his shotgun to the head

which he thought was
a small dead kangaroo,

but he realized it was
a human being, it was me.

And of course, then
straight to hospital,

police straight to hospital,

then became a
matter for life and death.

And what were the chances

if the hunters
wouldn't have found you?

Again, Jesus knew you.

God had already
had a plan for my life,

bigger than whatever

it was incredible.

And during the
course of the operation

to put the broken
body back together again.

You can imagine
the loss of blood,

the blood transfusions,

the doctors
warned my parents again

that he would not
come through this.

You weren't gonna make it again.

And during the
course of the surgery,

they told my parents

and they got the heart
going through electric shocks

to try and get the
body going back together

to try and put
those broken pieces

back together again.

I didn't know Jesus,

Jesus certainly
knew me and had a plan,

and that's
twice clinically dead.

And I didn't know Jesus,

went through the court case

as we try to find this man.

Went into, looked at
all the police photos,

books and books of police photos

over a period of
two or three years

that took me to get
over that the court case

identifying the
man police line ups.

So this makes
you about 15 or 16?

I'm now 16. Sixteen, okay.

And father says, son...

haven't been to school.

He said, "Son let's go
fishing and before it got bad

let us send you
to school again."

And I was taking an
empty bottle to a shop
00:18:36.51\00:18:42.22
to get a soft drink for
dad, and it started to rain.
00:18:42.25\00:18:45.99
And as the rain came down,

I was starting to run
with the soft drink bottle,
00:18:48.42\00:18:50.29
empty one in my hand.

Glass bottle?

Yep, that was a
glass bottle in those days.

And you took the
bottle to the shop

to get a refund
on the empty bottle.

And so it rained and the
steps leading up to the shop,

as a rain came down
faster, I ran faster.

And as I ran up
the stairs I slipped.

And so the hand and the
bottle on to the cement.

Oh, I was just
thinking about it.

And so the hand lands
on the counter of the shop.

And of course
I've got no hand, into,

they packed into all ice then.

So your hand was
completely cut off?

And so off to hospital
again. Off to the hospital.

And during the
course of that operation

to put the hand
back on, that the race

was on not only
trying to save the hand,

but save the life.

perfuse. Yeah, absolutely.

And as the doctors were
trying to put the hand back on,

the heart gave away.

It stopped and I
was clinically dead.

They actually were moving
me out of the operating theater

to a ward, when I was
pretty well of to the morgue

when a nurse wheeling
the trolley saw my toe move,

and they got back into
the operation straight back

and said, doctor,
doctor his toe moved.

I'm back into the
operating theatre,
