mountains of beautiful Montana.

We were building our
beautiful mountain home

and though I had wanted
to be a missionary before,

now we were comfortable,

and we had four
children my husband and I...

Emily was 20 years old,

Maria was 17 just Hannah
was nine and Josiah was seven.

time dealing with the heat

in August in Montana.

I thought I was tired

and I thought our family
was not a perfect family,

training for 60 days,

going to go to India,

but someone came up
to you and said, what?

Said, I feel impressed.

One of the instructors
at the training said,

"I feel impressed to ask you
to go to the Thai-Burma border

at the school that's
called Beletlia school

in Karen state of Burma.

And we said
we're going to India.

He said would you
please pray about it

because I feel impressed.

And so my husband and
I went down on our knees

for the rest of that week,

and we prayed
for God to show us.

And indeed he did
show. He did show us clearly.

you ended up going,

it is the Thai-Burma border
and the state is called Karen,

it's spelled like
we would say Karen,

but these people,
there's been a civil war there

and tell us little bit
about the people there?

The Karen people
have suffered persecution,

the genocide for
the last 65 years.

It's been horrendous for them,

they've been living like IDPs
"Internally Displaced People."

There is even at
here in the Phoenix

there is many, many
immigrants of the Karen.

There is many refugee camps
in Thailand along the border

that close to us
where we live in Thailand,

there is a large one
with at least 140,000 people.

And when we first came
it was a very bad situation,

today it has improved,
there is a peace agreement

and there is a new
government in place in Burma.

family went thinking

you would stay for a year,

Well, after we've
been there a short time,

the school we were
involved with on the Burma side

in Karen state.

One of our daughters
were involved with it,

actually two of
them the older girls.

And one day when my
daughter was over there,

she called us,

there was cell phone reception
over there, and she said,

"Mom, the Burmese
are coming to attack,"

and so the case that
people were freaking out,

hysteric because
they know what happens
00:07:25.51\00:07:27.71
when the Burmese would attack,
and so we started to evacuate,
00:07:27.74\00:07:33.55
bring the children
the younger ones first
00:07:33.58\00:07:36.32
across the river in a canoe,
00:07:36.35\00:07:38.25
and took them to our
small 600 square foot house.
00:07:38.29\00:07:43.16
And we had 120,

we had a school of
120s boarding students

from the other
side in our hands,

and after we brought
them to the Thai side,

the Burmese did come
and burn down the school.

So the Burmese, this
was part of the genocide

that they were trying to
get rid of all the Karen people.

So, now you find
yourself with a 120 children

that you have to
completely support

and this was a faith
ministry to say the least.

Well, in the beginning we used
my husband's saved retirement,

a faith based ministry

the beginning did not believe
at all in asking for money.

And so we ask God please provide

because we don't
have anything more.

And so one day
ADRA called us and said,

could we bring by

an 80 year old
Japanese gentleman,

and we said sure.

And so they came to
visit an hour later,

and as this man steps
out of his car together

with the ADRA people,

I felt impressed to
lower myself before him

and he smiled
so delighted at me,

and I was
wondering what did I just do,

why did I do
this, later I asked him,

how do you
Japanese greet each other,

because that's
not the way the Karen

or the Thai greet each other.

And he said we do just
what you just do to me,

and I knew God had done that.

And so he said,

don't have a budget.

We just look for ways, yes.

going to make a decision.

And so we made up a budget

needs were for the 120 children

we also did a medical ministry
and we share that with him

and they came back to us

we're covering it all.

And we were so excited
for what God was doing.

So God provided for a
120 but something happened

increased in a hurry,

that God placed in our hearts

10th grade school,

it has vocational training,
it has Bible health training,

it's a thriving school

missionaries have come to help

and we realized we
were no longer needed

and God gave us another
school on the Burma side.

And so we have another

little needy school like ours

were involved with it.

and so he had his burden,

promoting prayer and Bible study

because we know
that, that's the key

to get people revived

and once we're
revived personally,

we're gonna want
to share with others,

and then our last year

that we had
with the world church

and just praying that
God will lead his leaders,

hold up their arms,

and so this group
was taking part of that,

and over the 100
days the group grew,

it was initially like 50 or 100

and then they had 400 people
that it have room problems,

so they had to move
to a larger facility,

God was
blessing, it was powerful.

In this group
we have Adventists,

that were part of this group,

like five minutes a day total

in a very difficult situation

something that's so powerful,
