Amen. 00:08:05.18\00:08:06.51 So when you are out working in the field 00:08:06.55\00:08:11.32 with your parents in the world field, 00:08:11.35\00:08:14.46 how early on did your relationship with the Lord 00:08:14.49\00:08:18.89 become real to you, 00:08:18.93\00:08:20.26 not just something handed down by your parents, 00:08:20.30\00:08:22.70 not just something your parents believe, 00:08:22.73\00:08:24.40 but when did Jesus become real to you? 00:08:24.43\00:08:27.10 I think it was a time when my... 00:08:27.14\00:08:28.87 I always felt I was a Christian 00:08:28.90\00:08:30.87 and I always wanted to be a Christian, 00:08:30.91\00:08:32.24 but I don't think I really had a personal walk with Jesus 00:08:32.27\00:08:34.18 until about a month before my mother passed away, 00:08:34.21\00:08:37.65 and she proceeded to tell me 00:08:37.68\00:08:39.01 that I didn't need to get to heaven 00:08:39.05\00:08:41.42 on my dad shirttails because my dad was a Christian 00:08:41.45\00:08:44.62 that I needed to have my own walk 00:08:44.65\00:08:46.45 and that's when I was about probably around in my 40s, 00:08:46.49\00:08:50.23 so I mean I always thought I was a Christian, 00:08:50.26\00:08:52.06 but when I personally had my walk 00:08:52.09\00:08:53.53 was around when I was in my 40s or mid 40s. 00:08:53.56\00:08:54.90 Amen. Amen. 00:08:54.93\00:08:56.26 So you were living a Christian lifestyle 00:08:56.30\00:08:57.63 just hadn't made that real heart to heart connection. 00:08:57.67\00:09:00.34 Correct. 00:09:00.37\00:09:01.70 And you know, that's true for a lot of people 00:09:01.74\00:09:03.37 who've been in church for many, many years 00:09:03.41\00:09:05.74 and then one day just kind of, 00:09:05.77\00:09:07.41 you know, it's a cultural thing, 00:09:07.44\00:09:08.78 they're used to it, they have good morals, 00:09:08.81\00:09:11.38 but it's when they develop that personal relationship 00:09:11.41\00:09:14.15 that it really is meaningful, and how about you William? 00:09:14.18\00:09:17.32 Okay, I grew up also in an Adventist family. 00:09:17.35\00:09:20.09 Okay. 00:09:20.12\00:09:21.46 My parents were involved in the Adventist school system 00:09:21.49\00:09:24.46 and that was in California, 00:09:24.49\00:09:26.16 so grew up as my dad being a teacher 00:09:26.19\00:09:29.53 and then my principal 00:09:29.56\00:09:30.90 which is not so fun at times then. 00:09:30.93\00:09:32.70 Yeah, I'll bet. 00:09:32.73\00:09:34.07 You get called to the principal's office... 00:09:34.10\00:09:35.67 You try not to, 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.04 as you get it at home also then, 00:09:37.07\00:09:39.57 but so you know, went to Adventist schools 00:09:39.61\00:09:42.54 all through from grade school up through last year of college 00:09:42.58\00:09:45.61 and self so. 00:09:45.65\00:09:46.98 Yes, you know, I'm glad for that background. 00:09:47.02\00:09:50.59 And when did it become real for you? 00:09:50.62\00:09:54.22 It also probably later in life too, 00:09:54.26\00:09:56.32 because again, you know, my dad is a strong influence 00:09:56.36\00:09:59.56 and again, you know, it can't be just what he says 00:09:59.59\00:10:03.16 but has to be coming from you so. 00:10:03.20\00:10:04.97 It was more recently again too, 00:10:05.00\00:10:07.34 may be almost coming to India really then 00:10:07.37\00:10:09.77 were things just got a little more real 00:10:09.80\00:10:12.94 and vivid and saying you know, 00:10:12.97\00:10:15.54 just get closer to the Lord, and that kind of thing then so. 00:10:15.58\00:10:19.48 So how did you end up in India? 00:10:19.51\00:10:24.85 So who wants to answer that one? 00:10:24.89\00:10:26.52 Whoever feels like? You. 00:10:26.55\00:10:27.89 I think that I had started going back to India 00:10:27.92\00:10:32.33 to do humanitarian service helping somebody get a cow 00:10:32.36\00:10:36.53 so that they will have some milk to be able to sell, 00:10:36.56\00:10:39.83 helping children get shoes, 00:10:39.87\00:10:41.50 helping children to get uniforms so they go to school. 00:10:41.54\00:10:44.44 And about four years ago we were called to go 00:10:44.47\00:10:49.31 and head up the Adventist Child India program. 00:10:49.34\00:10:52.15 Now I was sort of, sort of happy about it, 00:10:52.18\00:10:55.28 but I wasn't too sure how my husband would feel, 00:10:55.32\00:10:57.25 he never been to India. 00:10:57.29\00:10:58.99 So the last humanitarian service that I did in India, 00:10:59.02\00:11:02.99 he came at the end of my programs 00:11:03.02\00:11:05.59 and we traveled for about three weeks 00:11:05.63\00:11:08.26 throughout India, 00:11:08.30\00:11:09.73 and when we were through I said to him, 00:11:09.76\00:11:11.63 "Will, so what do you think?" 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.10 And he says, "Yeah, I think I could live there, 00:11:13.13\00:11:14.47 it's a pretty cool place." 00:11:14.50\00:11:15.84 Wonderful. 00:11:15.87\00:11:17.21 So that's how we finally arrived in India 00:11:17.24\00:11:19.97 and started our work there with helping children. 00:11:20.01\00:11:22.44 All right, so tell us about Adventist Child India? 00:11:22.48\00:11:26.58 Okay. 00:11:26.61\00:11:27.95 This is a child aid program 00:11:27.98\00:11:30.42 that was started by Dorothy Watts. 00:11:30.45\00:11:32.15 She worked in India for a long time 00:11:32.19\00:11:33.82 and had saw the need of poor Adventist children 00:11:33.86\00:11:37.99 that would never be able to get an education 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.00 in Adventist schools, 00:11:40.03\00:11:41.36 just like here Adventist school are not free in India, 00:11:41.40\00:11:45.60 you know, there are private schools 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.17 and they cost, so we try to help literally 00:11:47.20\00:11:50.34 the poorest Adventist layman's children 00:11:50.37\00:11:52.91 who have no benefits and we try to help them get the education 00:11:52.94\00:11:56.14 that they never receive. 00:11:56.18\00:11:58.11 And so we're connected 00:11:58.15\00:12:00.58 with the school system in India. 00:12:00.62\00:12:03.02 There are many day schools and boarding schools, 00:12:03.05\00:12:06.69 about 280 total. 00:12:06.72\00:12:08.42 We're only connected with the boarding schools. 00:12:08.46\00:12:10.76 And that was Dorothy's idea we haven't changed that then, 00:12:10.79\00:12:15.03 so we're connected with the schools 00:12:15.06\00:12:17.30 that are outside the cities then, you know, 00:12:17.33\00:12:19.60 the villages and children come from there 00:12:19.63\00:12:22.70 and learn to speak English. 00:12:22.74\00:12:25.21 They would be coming 00:12:25.24\00:12:27.74 probably with may be two changes of clothes 00:12:27.78\00:12:30.45 and sometimes you know, barefoot that kind of thing, 00:12:30.48\00:12:32.45 so this is the ones that we're trying to reach in and help. 00:12:32.48\00:12:35.75 But okay, these are the poorest of the poorest you said. 00:12:35.78\00:12:38.15 And is there a reason 00:12:38.19\00:12:39.89 why she chose to do the boarding school atmosphere 00:12:39.92\00:12:44.53 rather than a home atmosphere. 00:12:44.56\00:12:46.53 Yeah, I think like yeah, 00:12:46.56\00:12:47.96 I think the reason why is when you're poor, 00:12:48.00\00:12:50.33 you may only get one meal a day 00:12:50.37\00:12:51.93 and in the boarding school you'll get three, 00:12:51.97\00:12:54.47 and if you have no place to sleep maybe 00:12:54.50\00:12:56.94 or you have to be crammed into small little house 00:12:56.97\00:12:59.84 you'll have a bed, 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.21 you'll have a place to sleep each night, 00:13:01.24\00:13:02.74 and you'll be able to have an education, 00:13:02.78\00:13:04.81 and have the atmosphere 00:13:04.85\00:13:06.58 of being able to be part of a group. 00:13:06.61\00:13:10.32 So how do you find these children? 00:13:10.35\00:13:12.69 Okay, good question. 00:13:12.72\00:13:14.59 Probably two ways, 00:13:14.62\00:13:16.19 the local pastors would be used and helpful to, 00:13:16.22\00:13:20.46 because they are the ones in the churches 00:13:20.50\00:13:21.83 that know these families then, so... 00:13:21.86\00:13:24.40 So these are all children of Adventists? 00:13:24.43\00:13:27.80 Yes, yes, yes they are, 00:13:27.84\00:13:29.64 so at least one of the parents needs to be Adventist then. 00:13:29.67\00:13:32.31 Maybe both don't have to be, but so you know, 00:13:32.34\00:13:34.84 the local pastor would know those families 00:13:34.88\00:13:36.64 that really need the help and sometimes 00:13:36.68\00:13:38.51 even the school principals that we work with, 00:13:38.55\00:13:41.08 they are gonna help people, you know, from their area, 00:13:41.12\00:13:43.72 and so that's how they would get recommended 00:13:43.75\00:13:46.86 towards them. 00:13:46.89\00:13:48.22 Okay, let me ask you this, Will, I'll direct this to you 00:13:48.26\00:13:51.03 because Nancy's parents worked in the fields of India 00:13:51.06\00:13:55.16 for sometime and she was accustom to it. 00:13:55.20\00:13:58.03 What was your first impression other than it's a cool place, 00:13:58.07\00:14:01.67 'cause it's so different. 00:14:01.70\00:14:03.10 What did you see that may have shocked you 00:14:03.14\00:14:07.61 or concerned you, what kinds of things 00:14:07.64\00:14:11.11 when we're talking about the poorest of the poor, 00:14:11.15\00:14:13.42 how do these children live? 00:14:13.45\00:14:15.48 They literally live in mud brick huts, 00:14:15.52\00:14:20.72 houses you might call them, 00:14:20.76\00:14:22.09 then they might have thatch roofs 00:14:22.12\00:14:24.46 and in the North East it's a little different, 00:14:24.49\00:14:28.00 they might have bamboo walls 00:14:28.03\00:14:30.63 with like a corrugated tin roof, that kind of thing. 00:14:30.67\00:14:33.67 So this is the kind of housing they would have 00:14:33.70\00:14:35.54 and they might cook on an open fire, 00:14:35.57\00:14:38.04 you know, for their meals and all, 00:14:38.07\00:14:39.74 and so that definitely was, you know, new and you know, 00:14:39.77\00:14:45.91 just said wow, this is, 00:14:45.95\00:14:47.48 if we can help these kind of people, it's great. 00:14:47.52\00:14:49.88 I actually had a little bit of experience before that. 00:14:49.92\00:14:52.99 For one year I was a student missionary in Africa, 00:14:53.02\00:14:55.52 and you know, 00:14:55.56\00:14:57.66 between my junior and senior in college. 00:14:57.69\00:14:59.83 So I had seen some of that then so it wasn't quite as shocking 00:14:59.86\00:15:02.73 to see it the very first time, but... 00:15:02.76\00:15:05.00 But do they have clean water sources there? 00:15:05.03\00:15:08.60 In most places they do now... 00:15:08.64\00:15:09.97 Most of the time. Most of the time. 00:15:10.01\00:15:11.34 They will have the drinking water 00:15:11.37\00:15:12.71 and they will have the water that they bathe 00:15:12.74\00:15:14.08 and take care of other stuff. 00:15:14.11\00:15:17.38 We tend to drink from a bottle. 00:15:17.41\00:15:20.32 We buy our water bottles and we take them with us, 00:15:20.35\00:15:23.08 because we're not used to when you travel 00:15:23.12\00:15:26.02 and you have different water sources 00:15:26.05\00:15:28.69 you don't, even if they're clean, 00:15:28.72\00:15:30.16 you may not always get along with the water, so. 00:15:30.19\00:15:34.30 Yeah, I'm understanding exactly what you are saying. 00:15:34.33\00:15:36.33 You want to be safe. 00:15:36.36\00:15:37.70 We've done enough traveling to know that. 00:15:37.73\00:15:39.60 So how many years have you been there now? 00:15:39.63\00:15:42.34 You've been there three years. 00:15:42.37\00:15:43.71 Yep, just a little over three 00:15:43.74\00:15:45.07 and we're thinking at least five 00:15:45.11\00:15:47.34 and more than that if we can we'll figure that out 00:15:47.38\00:15:51.15 as the time moves on here. 00:15:51.18\00:15:52.58 And how many children Adventists the child, 00:15:52.61\00:15:59.45 or excuse me The Child India, 00:15:59.49\00:16:00.99 how many children are you helping? 00:16:01.02\00:16:02.76 Okay, it's close to about 2200 now then, so it's a lot. 00:16:02.79\00:16:07.20 Oh, my. It's a lot. 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.13 That we are involved in 17 of the 29 states in India 00:16:09.16\00:16:14.37 and 38 boarding schools, 00:16:14.40\00:16:16.27 so that they are divided up these 2200 children divided up, 00:16:16.30\00:16:19.31 some may have 20 in one school, 00:16:19.34\00:16:20.94 some may have 200 in other school, 00:16:20.98\00:16:22.64 but 38 boarding schools throughout India. 00:16:22.68\00:16:25.51 So can you give us an idea 00:16:25.55\00:16:27.05 of what your work schedule might be, 00:16:27.08\00:16:29.38 do you try to travel to each of these schools? 00:16:29.42\00:16:33.02 We do. We travel many ways. 00:16:33.05\00:16:37.43 The easiest way is by plane and that's very rare, 00:16:37.46\00:16:41.20 but when we have to go very far, 00:16:41.23\00:16:43.73 then we do take the train, a plane 00:16:43.77\00:16:45.27 because a train would take too long 00:16:45.30\00:16:46.63 and our time is valuable. 00:16:46.67\00:16:48.70 We travel by rickshaw which is a three wheeled vehicle. 00:16:48.74\00:16:52.87 We travel by local bus, county bus, Volvo bus, 00:16:52.91\00:16:59.81 we travel by car and we travel by train, 00:16:59.85\00:17:02.52 so there is many different ways of traveling 00:17:02.55\00:17:05.45 and it depends on what school we're going to, 00:17:05.49\00:17:08.49 in a car we drive, we have a car 00:17:08.52\00:17:10.33 that we are able to go to some other schools with. 00:17:10.36\00:17:12.99 And how often do you, 00:17:13.03\00:17:14.36 are you going around to these different schools? 00:17:14.40\00:17:16.36 Okay, it's once a year. All right. 00:17:16.40\00:17:18.67 And occasionally it's twice here 00:17:18.70\00:17:20.34 in some of the may be closer schools, 00:17:20.37\00:17:21.94 but once a year so that's 38 times to go 00:17:21.97\00:17:25.61 and you know... 00:17:25.64\00:17:26.98 So that's part of our schedule certainly then is 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.11 not always in the office work out, 00:17:29.14\00:17:31.48 and of course it's fun to meet the children 00:17:31.51\00:17:33.31 and to see what's going on 00:17:33.35\00:17:35.18 and the administrators of the schools 00:17:35.22\00:17:36.89 and the teachers you know, 00:17:36.92\00:17:38.69 just make sure things are going well. 00:17:38.72\00:17:40.36 Well, I know you were here in 2014, 00:17:40.39\00:17:44.29 and you were telling us the story, 00:17:44.33\00:17:46.53 you shared a story about three young ones. 00:17:46.56\00:17:49.63 I think the first one was Ibha, 00:17:49.66\00:17:51.87 it's that how you said her name. 00:17:51.90\00:17:53.23 Yes, Ibha has finished her high school 12th standard. 00:17:53.27\00:17:57.51 Can you give us a little bit of her background? 00:17:57.54\00:17:59.27 Ibha came from the north east and she started 00:17:59.31\00:18:02.71 with the Adventist Child India program 00:18:02.74\00:18:04.31 in her fourth grade. 00:18:04.35\00:18:06.11 Came from a place where she was an orphan 00:18:06.15\00:18:09.22 and one of our lay workers request, 00:18:09.25\00:18:12.92 asked her she'd like to go to boarding school 00:18:12.95\00:18:14.82 and she chose to say yes, and she came into our program. 00:18:14.86\00:18:18.23 In India when you are 10th grade comes along 00:18:18.26\00:18:21.03 and you're finished 10th grade, 00:18:21.06\00:18:22.46 you have to choose either science or arts. 00:18:22.50\00:18:26.43 And that's where you decide 00:18:26.47\00:18:27.90 what school you're going to go to, 00:18:27.94\00:18:29.37 so she chose science 00:18:29.40\00:18:31.27 and she is now in a college in Ottapalam, Kerala 00:18:31.31\00:18:35.04 and she is taking nursing, 00:18:35.08\00:18:37.41 so we're really excited about her. 00:18:37.45\00:18:39.55 And Kima, he also is an orphan. 00:18:39.58\00:18:44.39 He has one brother, but he's very busy 00:18:44.42\00:18:47.19 and he doesn't have a lot of money to help Kima, 00:18:47.22\00:18:49.49 but Kima is now finished just 12th, 00:18:49.52\00:18:52.16 he would also took science, 00:18:52.19\00:18:54.16 but what happened was is that 00:18:54.20\00:18:56.33 when he was about to take the exam, 00:18:56.36\00:18:58.73 they cancelled the exam 00:18:58.77\00:19:00.64 and so he wasn't able to take the exam, 00:19:00.67\00:19:03.84 and the college was starting, he goes, what do I do now. 00:19:03.87\00:19:06.68 And we had a very wonderful man 00:19:06.71\00:19:08.48 who helped us get him into Surat 00:19:08.51\00:19:11.21 and he's doing his BBS. 00:19:11.25\00:19:12.98 So we're happy about him and he's doing really good 00:19:13.01\00:19:15.52 and then the last one was Alex. 00:19:15.55\00:19:17.62 He is still in grade school. 00:19:17.65\00:19:19.42 He's probably around I think in fifth or sixth grade now 00:19:19.45\00:19:23.02 and he's doing really well. 00:19:23.06\00:19:24.79 I talked about how he always seem to lose his shoes, 00:19:24.83\00:19:28.50 and every time I go back, I'll say, Alex, 00:19:28.53\00:19:30.97 I bought you shoes, what happened to the shoes. 00:19:31.00\00:19:32.90 And he go, I don't know, he's still doing that. 00:19:32.93\00:19:35.67 I don't know and so we have sort of joke upon him 00:19:35.70\00:19:39.51 because all he wants us to take and buy him chocolate, 00:19:39.54\00:19:43.51 and last year I wasn't able to go 00:19:43.55\00:19:45.71 and Will was and he hounded my husband 00:19:45.75\00:19:48.38 until he took Alex to get his chocolate, so... 00:19:48.42\00:19:51.42 He loves chocolate. 00:19:51.45\00:19:53.52 Alex and I get along really well. 00:19:53.56\00:19:57.39 So what do you find that these children, 00:19:57.43\00:20:01.96 I mean you're talking about orphans 00:20:02.00\00:20:03.47 or you're talking about often 00:20:03.50\00:20:04.83 that's children from larger families 00:20:04.87\00:20:06.63 that are, they're malnourished. 00:20:06.67\00:20:09.10 When they go into these boarding schools, 00:20:09.14\00:20:12.07 obviously you are giving them an education 00:20:12.11\00:20:14.98 in just a step up because they are learning English, 00:20:15.01\00:20:19.45 they're learning about so many different things, 00:20:19.48\00:20:24.92 but what did these children need? 00:20:24.95\00:20:28.56 Do they have in addition to the education, 00:20:28.59\00:20:32.29 what is that you find is universal 00:20:32.33\00:20:34.23 that all children need? 00:20:34.26\00:20:35.66 I think that what I have come up with 00:20:35.70\00:20:37.77 is that every child, 00:20:37.80\00:20:40.47 if I sat down with them and talk with them 00:20:40.50\00:20:43.10 for a few minutes in our program, 00:20:43.14\00:20:45.17 they would all have three things 00:20:45.21\00:20:46.88 that they really want. 00:20:46.91\00:20:48.24 They want to be believed in. 00:20:48.28\00:20:49.94 they want to be loved, and they want to trust, 00:20:49.98\00:20:52.08 have somebody they can trust in. 00:20:52.11\00:20:53.85 And so we're hoping that with being the mentors 00:20:53.88\00:20:57.89 and helping them with the... 00:20:57.92\00:21:00.66 showing them that we care and we love 00:21:00.69\00:21:02.32 and we want them to trust us 00:21:02.36\00:21:04.39 and we'll do what we can to help them 00:21:04.43\00:21:06.36 that they will be able to succeed in life 00:21:06.39\00:21:08.20 and be happy. 00:21:08.23\00:21:09.56 Amen. 00:21:09.60\00:21:10.93 Now you had some pictures of Ibha and Alex, 00:21:10.97\00:21:12.87 don't you I think? 00:21:12.90\00:21:14.24 Not this time, I'm sorry. Okay, it's okay. 00:21:14.27\00:21:15.67 But I do have a picture of young lady 00:21:15.70\00:21:18.11 that I'd like to tell her story. 00:21:18.14\00:21:19.94 She just came on the screen and her name is Sonia. 00:21:19.97\00:21:23.45 Sonia is an amazing young lady I just got to meet her 00:21:23.48\00:21:28.25 this last winter. 00:21:28.28\00:21:30.22 It was January, February. Yes. 00:21:30.25\00:21:31.92 How old is Sonia? 00:21:31.95\00:21:33.29 Sonia is about 15, and she's in ninth grade, 00:21:33.32\00:21:37.96 and she's going to school up in the north east. 00:21:37.99\00:21:40.86 And her story is where she came from a very, very happy home, 00:21:40.90\00:21:45.27 I mean, she was loved dearly. 00:21:45.30\00:21:47.07 She and her siblings, they were all very close, 00:21:47.10\00:21:49.47 very loving, and she had some friends 00:21:49.50\00:21:52.44 that were gonna go away to a boarding school, 00:21:52.47\00:21:54.18 and she and they kept saying, come on, come join us, 00:21:54.21\00:21:56.54 let's go to the boarding school together. 00:21:56.58\00:21:57.91 We'll have so much fun, it's really cool school. 00:21:57.95\00:22:00.08 So she finally went to her parents 00:22:00.12\00:22:01.45 and asked if she could go 00:22:01.48\00:22:02.82 and her parents were very happy about it, 00:22:02.85\00:22:04.52 and said, sure, no problem, go. 00:22:04.55\00:22:06.86 So she went and when she got there, 00:22:06.89\00:22:09.22 she saw a lot of difference 00:22:09.26\00:22:11.43 in the way people were living there 00:22:11.46\00:22:13.80 and the way they were doing their things in life 00:22:13.83\00:22:17.53 and questions came up, and one of the girl said to her 00:22:17.57\00:22:21.64 well, why don't you come with us to this class we go to 00:22:21.67\00:22:24.94 and learn about why we behave and act in a different way, 00:22:24.97\00:22:28.68 and so she went and she was really surprised 00:22:28.71\00:22:32.48 that so many things were different 00:22:32.51\00:22:34.58 than how she had been raised, and she chose to step up 00:22:34.62\00:22:38.42 and choose to follow this new way of living 00:22:38.45\00:22:41.92 and was so excited. 00:22:41.96\00:22:44.99 And this was the Adventist lifestyle? 00:22:45.03\00:22:46.36 Yes, the life of... 00:22:46.39\00:22:47.73 Adventist lifestyle, and so when Christmas came, 00:22:47.76\00:22:50.70 she went home and they had a great reunion, 00:22:50.73\00:22:53.07 they were so excited to see her. 00:22:53.10\00:22:54.44 They have all the family and relatives come 00:22:54.47\00:22:57.14 and they had a big party and they went out 00:22:57.17\00:22:58.67 and did all kinds of things and then Friday came along 00:22:58.71\00:23:02.18 and she started prepare for her new faith in her, her Sabbath. 00:23:02.21\00:23:06.95 And her mother came into the room and said, 00:23:06.98\00:23:08.58 what are you doing? 00:23:08.62\00:23:09.95 She says I'm getting ready for my Sabbath 00:23:09.98\00:23:13.36 and she goes, no, that's coming up on Sunday. 00:23:13.39\00:23:17.46 This is going to be Saturday, you're confused, 00:23:17.49\00:23:19.86 and she goes, "No I'm not confused mommy. 00:23:19.89\00:23:22.50 I found out 00:23:22.53\00:23:23.87 that the true Sabbath is on Saturday." 00:23:23.90\00:23:27.54 Well, the mother got very angry and went and told the father, 00:23:27.57\00:23:32.84 and the father came in and try to drill in her that, 00:23:32.87\00:23:36.61 no you had to leave the faith. 00:23:36.64\00:23:38.31 You have to come back to our faith. 00:23:38.35\00:23:40.58 You need to be baptized back into our faith. 00:23:40.62\00:23:42.85 You have no right to do this. 00:23:42.88\00:23:44.32 You belong to our family and she kept saying, no, 00:23:44.35\00:23:47.76 I can't do this please, 00:23:47.79\00:23:49.12 I cannot do what you want me to do." 00:23:49.16\00:23:51.19 And finally he said to her, 00:23:51.23\00:23:53.76 "Sonia, if our faith is not good enough for you, 00:23:53.80\00:23:59.80 then we must not be good enough parents for you, 00:23:59.83\00:24:02.77 and so we are no longer your parents. 00:24:02.80\00:24:06.57 Get out of our home, go away, you're disowned." 00:24:06.61\00:24:10.48 Bless her heart. 00:24:10.51\00:24:11.85 So what does this little girl do? 00:24:11.88\00:24:13.21 She was devastated and she loved her family, 00:24:13.25\00:24:16.05 but she knew she couldn't go back to way she was... 00:24:16.08\00:24:19.85 You know, isn't that amazing in 15 years old 00:24:19.89\00:24:22.16 to have that kind of ability to hold on to your faith, yeah. 00:24:22.19\00:24:27.56 So she found one of her friends 00:24:27.60\00:24:28.93 so he was willing to give her a little bit of money 00:24:28.96\00:24:30.70 and she took the bus back to the school, 00:24:30.73\00:24:33.20 and when she got there Mr. Seth saw her there 00:24:33.23\00:24:36.17 and he says what are you doing back school's not started yet. 00:24:36.20\00:24:38.54 She told him a little story and he said, 00:24:38.57\00:24:41.24 "Oh, my goodness, no problem, you can stay here, 00:24:41.28\00:24:43.98 eat with my family and you're gonna be okay. 00:24:44.01\00:24:46.58 We'll take care of you. 00:24:46.61\00:24:47.95 You're not going to leave the school. 00:24:47.98\00:24:49.32 You will still be able to go to school here. 00:24:49.35\00:24:51.39 We'll figure out a way." 00:24:51.42\00:24:52.95 And that's when Will and I, 00:24:52.99\00:24:54.49 William and I got into the picture. 00:24:54.52\00:24:55.92 We went up to the school to visit it 00:24:55.96\00:24:58.16 and he introduced us to this young lady. 00:24:58.19\00:25:00.46 And Sonia told us her story and we looked at each other 00:25:00.50\00:25:04.13 and we said, we can't let this girl go. 00:25:04.17\00:25:06.90 And so Will says, "How would you like to become the family, 00:25:06.94\00:25:09.17 a family member 00:25:09.20\00:25:10.54 of the Adventist Child India program." 00:25:10.57\00:25:12.21 And she got a real big smile and she was so excited, 00:25:12.24\00:25:14.44 because she knew 00:25:14.48\00:25:15.81 that she was been accepted into this family 00:25:15.84\00:25:17.78 that wanted to live like her. 00:25:17.81\00:25:20.05 Amen. 00:25:20.08\00:25:21.42 And that's such an inspiring story. 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.18 I mean there's that element of sadness, 00:25:23.22\00:25:26.25 but to think that as I said someone at 15 years old, 00:25:26.29\00:25:29.72 just hope that when the time comes 00:25:29.76\00:25:32.73 that all of us can have that same resolve, 00:25:32.76\00:25:36.20 so now you have some more students 00:25:36.23\00:25:39.67 that you want to share obviously? 00:25:39.70\00:25:41.04 Well, we have some more slides, 00:25:41.07\00:25:42.40 I think that would be nice to just sort of go through. 00:25:42.44\00:25:45.07 Will, why don't you say? Okay. 00:25:45.11\00:25:46.78 This is a bread, you know, 00:25:46.81\00:25:50.08 brick oven that we like to put in some more schools then, 00:25:50.11\00:25:52.95 they make chapatis 00:25:52.98\00:25:54.32 and may be even some actual loaves of bread. 00:25:54.35\00:25:56.08 And it's homemade. Yeah, this would be good. 00:25:56.12\00:25:58.65 This would be a typical kitchen 00:25:58.69\00:26:01.46 you know, cafe, for the cafeteria then. 00:26:01.49\00:26:03.93 Most of it occasionally gas, 00:26:03.96\00:26:05.66 but most of it's on over open fire. 00:26:05.69\00:26:07.70 And is this outdoors? Yes. 00:26:07.73\00:26:09.16 Yeah, outdoors then. 00:26:09.20\00:26:10.53 Sometimes they'll use huge buckets, 00:26:10.57\00:26:12.03 you know, tubs, not just small like you saw. 00:26:12.07\00:26:15.50 This would be a cafeteria, 00:26:15.54\00:26:17.07 so you know they're getting a good education, 00:26:17.11\00:26:19.47 but this is not luxury type thing, 00:26:19.51\00:26:21.74 this is, you know, bare-bones type of thing 00:26:21.78\00:26:23.71 but this would be... 00:26:23.75\00:26:25.08 But for some of them compared to what they came from, 00:26:25.11\00:26:26.85 it's probably is luxurious. 00:26:26.88\00:26:28.82 They also use a cafeteria as a study home. 00:26:28.85\00:26:32.95 They go there and study. Yeah. 00:26:32.99\00:26:34.62 This is a picture from the Irvine School 00:26:34.66\00:26:36.76 which now has a running water. 00:26:36.79\00:26:38.96 Before they had two wells, two hand pumps 00:26:38.99\00:26:42.26 and that's how the whole school operated on 00:26:42.30\00:26:44.67 and now they have running water 00:26:44.70\00:26:46.10 as of may be six months ago then. 00:26:46.13\00:26:50.01 One time we visited 00:26:50.04\00:26:52.17 and they have yearly sports days, 00:26:52.21\00:26:54.14 and so here the kids are playing volleyball. 00:26:54.18\00:26:59.08 And this has to do with some Christmas gifts. 00:26:59.11\00:27:02.05 All the children get Christmas gifts 00:27:02.08\00:27:04.19 from the program. 00:27:04.22\00:27:05.55 And here was backpacks and they call them school bags, 00:27:05.59\00:27:09.49 and also actually a copy of the Desire of Ages book. 00:27:09.52\00:27:13.73 Praise God. Yeah. 00:27:13.76\00:27:15.50 And here is again, 00:27:15.53\00:27:17.70 two boys having to share a plate in this case then, 00:27:17.73\00:27:20.07 but eating the rice and dal then and then they... 00:27:20.10\00:27:25.24 And can you imagine having to share a plate. 00:27:25.27\00:27:27.24 Yeah. 00:27:27.28\00:27:28.61 So that you can eat well, that was what the boarding school... 00:27:28.64\00:27:30.15 Sometimes, not all do, but someone had to do that. 00:27:30.18\00:27:32.31 And these are three students in the, 00:27:32.35\00:27:34.45 at nursing now, they graduate from 12, 00:27:34.48\00:27:37.05 this now in their first year of nursing 00:27:37.09\00:27:38.79 at the Ottapalam nursing school which is associated 00:27:38.82\00:27:41.39 with the local Ottapalam Adventist hospital. 00:27:41.42\00:27:43.76 And she is Ibha. 00:27:43.79\00:27:45.16 And that is Ibha in the centre there. 00:27:45.19\00:27:46.53 Oh, how precious. 00:27:46.56\00:27:48.26 Now let me ask you, 00:27:48.30\00:27:50.13 I'll just interrupt your pictures for just a second, 00:27:50.17\00:27:52.20 because you go from what grade to what grade 00:27:52.23\00:27:55.77 when you're supporting these children? 00:27:55.80\00:27:57.14 Good question, I now we hadn't talked about that yet. 00:27:57.17\00:27:58.51 Is lowest kindergarten 00:27:58.54\00:28:00.11 and they even have lower kindergarten 00:28:00.14\00:28:02.04 and upper kindergarten. 00:28:02.08\00:28:03.58 Some children starts lower 00:28:03.61\00:28:05.21 as early as about five years old or so then. 00:28:05.25\00:28:07.12 Alex was three. 00:28:07.15\00:28:08.48 Alex was three in fact and... 00:28:08.52\00:28:09.85 Now would these children be orphans 00:28:09.88\00:28:11.32 or would they have parents, 00:28:11.35\00:28:12.69 I mean how are they going off to boarding school at that age? 00:28:12.72\00:28:16.09 Well, Alex had a mother and a brother 00:28:16.12\00:28:18.06 but his father had removed himself from the family 00:28:18.09\00:28:21.73 and his mother could not take care of him 00:28:21.76\00:28:24.43 and his brother, and work. 00:28:24.47\00:28:26.43 She was a day laborer 00:28:26.47\00:28:27.80 and she would make about 100 rupees a day 00:28:27.84\00:28:31.14 which is about dollar and half max 00:28:31.17\00:28:34.44 that she would make per day. 00:28:34.48\00:28:36.08 So that's the reason why Alex was sent there at age three, 00:28:36.11\00:28:39.61 because his mom could not handle the taking care of him 00:28:39.65\00:28:43.08 and work at the same time. 00:28:43.12\00:28:44.45 All right, so three and then what, 00:28:44.49\00:28:46.15 to what grade are you supporting them? 00:28:46.19\00:28:48.19 Up to 12th. Okay. 00:28:48.22\00:28:49.96 And then may be we have a little bit time, 00:28:49.99\00:28:51.96 at some point we're going to talk about 00:28:51.99\00:28:54.30 being able to help college for the first time then, 00:28:54.33\00:28:56.56 but it has been for part timers. 00:28:56.60\00:28:57.93 Okay, so Ibha. Yes, Ibha is one of those then. 00:28:57.97\00:29:00.24 This is now you are, 00:29:00.27\00:29:01.90 are you helping to support her in college, 00:29:01.94\00:29:04.01 so we'll go back to that. 00:29:04.04\00:29:05.37 Let's finish up the pictures. 00:29:05.41\00:29:06.74 All right, may be just a few left. 00:29:06.78\00:29:08.68 This is typical classroom 00:29:08.71\00:29:11.98 in one or may be the poor schools 00:29:12.01\00:29:14.15 but there is still, you know, getting a good education and... 00:29:14.18\00:29:17.99 And they are neatly dressed, they're clean. 00:29:18.02\00:29:20.16 Yes, they have uniforms and. And they look healthy. 00:29:20.19\00:29:24.06 We definitely were told from the principals 00:29:24.09\00:29:26.09 that when they come back sometimes from, you know, home 00:29:26.13\00:29:29.23 that they gain weight at school, 00:29:29.26\00:29:30.60 they're eating better at school then. 00:29:30.63\00:29:32.50 Another school 00:29:32.53\00:29:33.87 where they don't have any desk or chairs yet. 00:29:33.90\00:29:35.30 Yeah. So they sit on the floor. 00:29:35.34\00:29:36.67 Yeah, not all of them are this way 00:29:36.71\00:29:38.04 but some of them are, 00:29:38.07\00:29:39.41 so this would be probably more like 00:29:39.44\00:29:40.78 about a second grade class here then. 00:29:40.81\00:29:43.41 So what does that mean to travel when they even, 00:29:43.45\00:29:45.78 even if they are not going off to college 00:29:45.81\00:29:47.65 just to learn how to speak English, 00:29:47.68\00:29:51.22 I mean they're learning truths about Adventist lifestyle 00:29:51.25\00:29:55.26 the Adventist faith, they're learning the truths, 00:29:55.29\00:29:57.99 I mean they're being educated with Maths and reading, 00:29:58.03\00:30:01.20 but what does it mean to them practically 00:30:01.23\00:30:03.73 just that when they get this education, 00:30:03.77\00:30:05.53 does that open doors for them now? 00:30:05.57\00:30:07.60 Good question. You go ahead and answer. 00:30:07.64\00:30:08.97 I think in a long run yes, but society is changing, 00:30:09.00\00:30:14.01 and India is becoming very, very educated minded, 00:30:14.04\00:30:19.21 and the people are wanting more than just 12th grade now. 00:30:19.25\00:30:22.88 They're wanting college, 00:30:22.92\00:30:24.25 they're wanting to be able to succeed in a masters or PhD 00:30:24.29\00:30:28.22 or all the things that we do here in the US, 00:30:28.26\00:30:30.26 they want to continue 00:30:30.29\00:30:31.76 and so that's what we have decided to do our new program 00:30:31.79\00:30:35.70 in the ACI program is to have a college fund 00:30:35.73\00:30:40.57 so that children in the ACI program 00:30:40.60\00:30:43.57 can continue their education and go into college 00:30:43.61\00:30:46.07 and that's what happened with Ibha, 00:30:46.11\00:30:47.84 and Kima and a few of the other children. 00:30:47.88\00:30:50.88 So, Nancy, the caste system 00:30:50.91\00:30:53.31 is still very much in place in India, correct? 00:30:53.35\00:30:56.35 Yeah, I think so, but there is changing. 00:30:56.38\00:30:59.25 We have a middle class now and if you have a... 00:30:59.29\00:31:01.56 But isn't that education is this the way out 00:31:01.59\00:31:05.43 is exactly the point I was going to make. 00:31:05.46\00:31:07.13 You can explain that yes, 00:31:07.16\00:31:08.50 it is definitely true that without education, 00:31:08.53\00:31:11.10 they're gonna stay where they're at, 00:31:11.13\00:31:12.63 and there is no hope of helping themselves 00:31:12.67\00:31:15.47 or the family in the future without education, 00:31:15.50\00:31:18.17 that's the way to get into the next level 00:31:18.21\00:31:20.38 or few steps up at least then. 00:31:20.41\00:31:21.78 And see I think 00:31:21.81\00:31:23.14 that so many of us here in the States, 00:31:23.18\00:31:24.71 we hear these stories of these rebels 00:31:24.75\00:31:29.58 if you will people who quit school early 00:31:29.62\00:31:31.65 but go out and make a big, 00:31:31.69\00:31:34.49 you know, splash in the world and do something, 00:31:34.52\00:31:37.33 but it's not so in India is it, without education 00:31:37.36\00:31:40.76 they are basically consigned to a life of day labor. 00:31:40.80\00:31:47.64 Probably yeah, 00:31:47.67\00:31:49.00 about 90 percent of that is true. 00:31:49.04\00:31:50.37 I think there is a few that have been able to climb out 00:31:50.41\00:31:52.87 by doing small little stalls like Chai stalls 00:31:52.91\00:31:56.85 and then getting bigger and bigger and bigger 00:31:56.88\00:31:58.45 and becoming like well not like starbucks, 00:31:58.48\00:32:01.18 but similar to, I know they would have a big store 00:32:01.22\00:32:04.75 where they have a lot of people join in and getting money 00:32:04.79\00:32:06.76 so they do bring themselves up that way also, 00:32:06.79\00:32:09.26 so there's a little of group that can do that but very few. 00:32:09.29\00:32:13.60 So tell us then, you've just recently started the college 00:32:13.63\00:32:17.77 and Ibha is one of them and who else he's got. 00:32:17.80\00:32:20.00 Ibha. Ibha. 00:32:20.04\00:32:21.67 Ibha and Kima. Ibha and Kima. 00:32:21.70\00:32:23.94 Yeah. Okay. 00:32:23.97\00:32:25.31 Tell us about that project? Let me do then, okay. 00:32:25.34\00:32:28.74 There is a nursing side of it and this is actually so new 00:32:28.78\00:32:32.08 that this is happening after we've left India 00:32:32.11\00:32:35.98 to promote the program here in the US, 00:32:36.02\00:32:37.55 so we're talking about June so really recent, 00:32:37.59\00:32:40.49 but we're gonna have more children in for nursing 00:32:40.52\00:32:45.09 as if we can find more sponsors, 00:32:45.13\00:32:46.80 of course that will help out 00:32:46.83\00:32:48.53 but a program will sponsor of them are self even. 00:32:48.56\00:32:51.97 So there is that aspect of it 00:32:52.00\00:32:54.64 and then the other would be for teachers, 00:32:54.67\00:32:57.11 so there is another college Adventist college 00:32:57.14\00:32:59.74 that we're gonna be involved with that 00:32:59.77\00:33:02.01 will hopefully we can start with at least 20 or 30, 00:33:02.04\00:33:05.91 and again school has just started over there then 00:33:05.95\00:33:10.22 and because the Adventist school system 00:33:10.25\00:33:12.89 needs Adventist teachers, 00:33:12.92\00:33:14.46 so that's definitely need that we've seen, 00:33:14.49\00:33:16.56 and so we're trying to help as many, you know, 00:33:16.59\00:33:20.70 students that are graduating from 12, 00:33:20.73\00:33:22.23 that want to be teachers, 00:33:22.26\00:33:23.60 and we will put them definitely through 00:33:23.63\00:33:25.63 for the four years of education degree that they will need. 00:33:25.67\00:33:30.51 All right, so you said that either they get sponsors 00:33:30.54\00:33:32.77 and you sponsor them. 00:33:32.81\00:33:34.14 Tell us a little about your sponsorship program? 00:33:34.18\00:33:37.01 How does Adventist Child India, 00:33:37.05\00:33:39.61 how are you setup your 501c3, tell us? 00:33:39.65\00:33:44.25 You want to answer some of them. 00:33:44.29\00:33:45.62 You can go ahead. Okay. 00:33:45.65\00:33:46.99 Yes, it is, it's 501c3... 00:33:47.02\00:33:48.72 Which means this is non profit. 00:33:48.76\00:33:50.23 Non profit organization then, 00:33:50.26\00:33:53.03 technically there is six of us that work, 00:33:53.06\00:33:56.13 there is Nancy and I with four staff members 00:33:56.16\00:33:58.40 that help us you know, 00:33:58.43\00:33:59.77 certainly don't do this by ourselves 00:33:59.80\00:34:01.14 and so we have good, four good staff members then, 00:34:01.17\00:34:02.97 but any donations is actually run through 00:34:03.00\00:34:06.14 the general conference of Seventh-day Adventists then. 00:34:06.17\00:34:08.54 And that money is collected before a few weeks 00:34:08.58\00:34:12.28 and then wired over to India type of thing then. 00:34:12.31\00:34:14.52 So that's how the donations happen then. 00:34:14.55\00:34:18.25 And what does it cost to sponsor a child? 00:34:18.29\00:34:20.39 Yeah, it is not much, 00:34:20.42\00:34:21.76 only a little over dollar a day. 00:34:21.79\00:34:23.39 This is from the kindergarten to 12th program then, 00:34:23.43\00:34:26.16 so they are really $35 a month or $420 a year. 00:34:26.19\00:34:30.27 So it money goes a long ways in India, 00:34:30.30\00:34:33.70 put it that way. 00:34:33.74\00:34:35.07 That's right, so if somebody were wanting 00:34:35.10\00:34:37.37 to sponsor a child, you know, 00:34:37.41\00:34:40.84 as I said, God says I have a plan for your life 00:34:40.88\00:34:44.95 to give you a hope and a future, 00:34:44.98\00:34:46.92 but quite often what the Lord does 00:34:46.95\00:34:49.02 is He works on people like you 00:34:49.05\00:34:52.22 and like me to be His hands, 00:34:52.25\00:34:56.29 His channel of blessing to help fulfill that plan 00:34:56.32\00:35:01.06 and that future. 00:35:01.10\00:35:02.43 He moves on our hearts to help, 00:35:02.46\00:35:04.77 so if somebody were wanting to become a sponsor 00:35:04.80\00:35:09.47 at $31 or 100 whatever you said a year. 00:35:09.50\00:35:14.64 How would they go about doing that? 00:35:14.68\00:35:17.71 Okay, well, we do go around and we go to churches 00:35:17.75\00:35:21.95 and the schools if we can, camp meetings, 00:35:21.98\00:35:23.99 and of course we talk about it 00:35:24.02\00:35:25.72 and give out pamphlets and all that, 00:35:25.75\00:35:27.89 but the main way, you know, 00:35:27.92\00:35:29.26 for those sitting at home watching then, 00:35:29.29\00:35:31.33 it would be going to the website 00:35:31.36\00:35:33.80 www.adventistchildindia.org. 00:35:33.83\00:35:37.40 Well, you said that really fast. 00:35:37.43\00:35:38.77 That's adventistchildindia.org. adventistchildindia.org. 00:35:38.80\00:35:42.70 And that hopefully it's a new one finally 00:35:42.74\00:35:46.17 that we've got, worked hard on that one, 00:35:46.21\00:35:48.24 and it's pretty clear about the steps that you would do 00:35:48.28\00:35:51.05 so you can actually mail in checks, 00:35:51.08\00:35:54.88 you know, to an address is given there 00:35:54.92\00:35:57.09 in Silver Spring, General Conference 00:35:57.12\00:35:58.75 or you could pay by credit card even then. 00:35:58.79\00:36:00.39 Okay, so and then they are collected 00:36:00.42\00:36:02.39 then it goes through the General Conference 00:36:02.42\00:36:04.43 so it is tax deductible. 00:36:04.46\00:36:06.23 And then the conference sent you the funds. 00:36:06.26\00:36:08.56 Now I believe you brought a video roll, did you not? 00:36:08.60\00:36:12.30 Why don't we show the video roll 00:36:12.33\00:36:14.50 and so we can get a little bit, 00:36:14.54\00:36:16.67 more better picture of Adventist Child India. 00:36:16.71\00:36:20.38 Sounds good. 00:36:20.41\00:36:21.74 I lost my mom at the age of three. 00:36:45.43\00:36:47.70 How can I study this expensive course? 00:37:01.38\00:37:04.89 I have no hope for an education. 00:37:16.30\00:37:18.13 I was born in a small village in the state of Meghalaya. 00:37:32.81\00:37:36.45 I lost my mom at the age of three 00:37:36.48\00:37:38.72 and my dad remarried. 00:37:38.75\00:37:40.19 Since he was remarried, I didn't stayed with him 00:37:40.22\00:37:43.06 and my uncle took me as one of his own daughter. 00:37:43.09\00:37:46.56 All the children that joined the ACI program 00:37:50.00\00:37:53.17 have their own story to tell 00:37:53.20\00:37:55.70 and the one thing that unites our children 00:37:55.74\00:37:59.01 is the gift of hope. 00:37:59.04\00:38:00.38 I'm a better person right now, 00:38:03.11\00:38:05.01 if it would have not been because of the ACI program, 00:38:05.05\00:38:07.88 I would have not been where I am today. 00:38:07.92\00:38:12.65 My mom only always doing work, getting 100 rupees per day, 00:38:12.69\00:38:16.66 how can I study this expensive course?
