Dear friend. Dear friend. 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.37 Paid you a very, very high compliment. 00:02:17.43\00:02:19.43 In fact, when your name came up in conversation, 00:02:19.47\00:02:21.14 he actually waxed eloquent... 00:02:21.17\00:02:22.54 Oh, boy. On your name. 00:02:22.57\00:02:24.91 He just put all of our jazz stars, he did. 00:02:24.94\00:02:26.27 He can do that. He is an eloquent guy. 00:02:26.31\00:02:28.14 He did but obviously you had impressed him. 00:02:28.18\00:02:30.51 Now, one of the words that stuck in my ear was he said, 00:02:30.55\00:02:34.92 you are a professional. 00:02:34.95\00:02:37.25 Now here is the translation for me. 00:02:37.29\00:02:39.19 Okay. Low diva coach. 00:02:39.22\00:02:43.06 You know, what I mean. Listen. 00:02:43.09\00:02:44.43 When I tour with guys 00:02:44.46\00:02:45.79 and every once in a while I try to throw tantrums, 00:02:45.83\00:02:48.13 you know, they just laugh at me, man. 00:02:48.16\00:02:50.20 I try to be diva, diva, whatever the word is... 00:02:50.23\00:02:53.07 Yeah. 00:02:53.10\00:02:54.44 I just... that's not in my personality... 00:02:54.47\00:02:55.80 Yeah. Even though I try. 00:02:55.84\00:02:57.17 Having worked with you last year 00:02:57.24\00:02:58.57 and seen you over a number a days 00:02:58.61\00:03:00.68 and seeing the professionalism, the... 00:03:00.71\00:03:04.15 I'm gonna use a coolness that you bring to. 00:03:04.18\00:03:06.92 Is that something that you rehearse, 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.45 that you practice that is important to you, 00:03:08.48\00:03:10.99 or just part of the way you go about your life? 00:03:11.02\00:03:13.22 You know, I think some of it is maybe a personality thing. 00:03:13.25\00:03:16.42 But another big part of that is the people 00:03:16.46\00:03:19.03 who've influenced me. 00:03:19.06\00:03:20.40 You know, I look at the people 00:03:20.43\00:03:21.73 who I've had a chance to work with who I consider, 00:03:21.76\00:03:25.27 you know, legends 00:03:25.30\00:03:26.63 and they're just low maintenance, sort of low 00:03:26.70\00:03:29.10 and here we've been talking 00:03:29.14\00:03:30.47 before we got on air about the time 00:03:30.51\00:03:32.17 I spent working with Richard Smallwood, 00:03:32.21\00:03:35.64 who is a legendary gospel artist. 00:03:35.68\00:03:38.08 And he is a guy who, you know, 00:03:38.11\00:03:40.38 who doesn't have to have his separate dressing room, 00:03:40.42\00:03:42.68 you know, he travels with everyone else, 00:03:42.72\00:03:44.45 he is just, you know, very approachable, 00:03:44.49\00:03:46.55 you know, he is not walking around with bodyguards 00:03:46.59\00:03:48.42 and all that sort of things. 00:03:48.46\00:03:49.79 So when you meet someone 00:03:49.82\00:03:51.16 who is like that legendary that stature, 00:03:51.19\00:03:53.96 he kind of keeps it real. 00:03:54.00\00:03:55.30 You know, I worked a lot with a really renounced song writer, 00:03:55.33\00:03:58.73 producer, and artist by the name of George Duke. 00:03:58.77\00:04:01.40 And George was a same way, man, just regular guy, 00:04:01.44\00:04:04.87 amazing, just legendary. 00:04:04.91\00:04:06.98 I mean, I couldn't name a person 00:04:07.01\00:04:08.34 that he hadn't worked with 00:04:08.38\00:04:09.74 and just the easiest guy to get along with. 00:04:09.78\00:04:11.61 So when you see guys like that, 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.52 you say, "Well, if he can be..." 00:04:13.55\00:04:14.88 Right. 00:04:14.92\00:04:16.25 "You know, who am I to try to be..." 00:04:16.28\00:04:17.62 Yeah, let me keep my feet on the ground. 00:04:17.65\00:04:18.99 That's like me to have the water at 72 degrees 00:04:19.02\00:04:22.26 and make sure you pick out the orange M&M's 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.56 I only want the green ones. 00:04:24.59\00:04:25.93 Yeah. 00:04:25.96\00:04:27.40 So that ability with humility thing impresses you. 00:04:27.40\00:04:29.56 It does make, yeah. It really does. 00:04:29.60\00:04:31.47 It's made a big impact on me 00:04:31.50\00:04:33.84 and another mentor of mine the guy named Wintley Phipps. 00:04:33.90\00:04:36.87 He told, he said, "Man, I have this recurring dream 00:04:36.91\00:04:40.64 that I woke up one day 00:04:40.68\00:04:42.21 and my friends came up to me and says, 00:04:42.24\00:04:43.71 'You know, you really weren't that good.'" 00:04:43.75\00:04:47.65 We just wanted to encourage you. 00:04:47.68\00:04:49.55 Yeah. Yes. 00:04:49.58\00:04:50.95 Some kind of voice in the back of my head that says, 00:04:50.99\00:04:52.39 "Man, maybe they're just encouraging me, 00:04:52.42\00:04:54.36 just to make me feel good, 00:04:54.39\00:04:55.72 you know, so keep you grounded, keep you humble." 00:04:55.76\00:04:57.73 Yeah, you do. 00:04:57.76\00:04:59.09 You bring a spirit with you 00:04:59.13\00:05:00.53 that is refreshing and inviting. 00:05:00.56\00:05:02.46 It really is. Oh, thank you. 00:05:02.50\00:05:03.87 Thank you so much. And you prosecute your work. 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.53 You go by what you do with professionalism... 00:05:05.57\00:05:07.17 Thank you. 00:05:07.24\00:05:08.57 And you get at it and you're talented man. 00:05:08.60\00:05:09.94 You know, I'm just, 00:05:09.97\00:05:11.31 I'm full on treating on your life. 00:05:11.34\00:05:12.67 Praise God. Praise God. 00:05:12.71\00:05:14.68 Where you're from originally? 00:05:14.71\00:05:16.24 I'm originally from Philadelphia. 00:05:16.28\00:05:17.78 I grew up in Philadelphia, a great music city. 00:05:17.81\00:05:19.88 Oh, yeah. 00:05:19.91\00:05:21.25 I really enjoyed growing in musical family, 00:05:21.28\00:05:23.39 musical household. 00:05:23.42\00:05:24.75 Grandmother was a Bible worker and a musician. 00:05:24.79\00:05:27.72 And you know, both mom and dad played, 00:05:27.76\00:05:29.52 you know, brother and sister taking piano lessons, 00:05:29.56\00:05:31.56 so grew up in a musical family... 00:05:31.59\00:05:33.40 Okay. There in Philadelphia. 00:05:33.43\00:05:34.73 Kind of in the DNA. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, man. 00:05:34.76\00:05:36.33 I couldn't get away from it if I try. 00:05:36.36\00:05:37.80 So Adventist home? Adventist home. 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.20 Yeah. 00:05:39.23\00:05:40.60 People when they see, at least to me it occurs to me 00:05:40.64\00:05:43.20 that you're a spiritual person. 00:05:43.24\00:05:45.01 When did your relationship with Jesus become a reality? 00:05:45.04\00:05:48.31 I mean, there's one thing to grow up in an Adventist home, 00:05:48.34\00:05:49.68 we're surrounded 00:05:49.71\00:05:51.05 by the accoutrement of Adventism... 00:05:51.08\00:05:52.41 Then you got to do it for you and Jesus. 00:05:52.45\00:05:53.78 Right. When did that happen? 00:05:53.82\00:05:55.15 Well, man, you know, I am a personality 00:05:55.18\00:05:58.45 who is very project oriented. 00:05:58.49\00:06:02.12 So as a music producer you work on a project, 00:06:02.16\00:06:04.86 the project's done, 00:06:04.89\00:06:06.23 it's out to the public, you're done. 00:06:06.26\00:06:08.23 I tell you, I had to confess, 00:06:08.26\00:06:10.07 man, that where I'm in my walk right now is a place 00:06:10.10\00:06:12.97 where I'm getting more comfortable with the fact 00:06:13.00\00:06:15.84 that this thing that we call a relationship 00:06:15.87\00:06:18.54 with Christ is a process. 00:06:18.57\00:06:21.11 And so for me growing up as in an Adventist home, 00:06:21.14\00:06:25.08 you know, it was always around 00:06:25.11\00:06:26.45 and I got baptized, I say about 13 or 14. 00:06:26.48\00:06:29.15 So that's when I think I really kind of locked in 00:06:29.18\00:06:31.69 but the beautiful thing about 00:06:31.72\00:06:33.05 where I'm now in my walk is 00:06:33.09\00:06:36.09 God is kind of freeing me from some of the... 00:06:36.12\00:06:41.86 I guess expectations or what I imagined 00:06:41.90\00:06:46.33 or thought it should be 00:06:46.37\00:06:48.67 and saying, "Hey, man, no this is really what this thing is." 00:06:48.70\00:06:52.27 And so He is bringing me to a place 00:06:52.31\00:06:53.64 where I kind of exhale a little bit and feel like, 00:06:53.68\00:06:56.44 "Okay, man, God is in this with me for the long haul." 00:06:56.48\00:07:00.05 You know, and it's really, 00:07:00.08\00:07:02.08 it's a tough change to make for me 00:07:02.12\00:07:05.12 just because of my personality, man. 00:07:05.15\00:07:06.59 But I'm really beginning 00:07:06.62\00:07:07.96 to get more comfortable with this idea 00:07:07.99\00:07:09.92 that I'm in this relationship with God 00:07:09.96\00:07:11.99 and He's gonna be here for the long haul. 00:07:12.03\00:07:13.83 And, you know, I know I'm not where I should be yet 00:07:13.86\00:07:17.27 but He knew that when we linked up 00:07:17.30\00:07:20.67 and He say, "Hey, I'm gonna walk with you 00:07:20.74\00:07:22.07 for the whole thing."` 00:07:22.10\00:07:23.44 So I feel like where I am now 00:07:23.47\00:07:26.41 is even a better place than I was... 00:07:26.44\00:07:28.84 Praise the Lord. Early on. Yes. 00:07:28.88\00:07:30.28 I'm really grateful for that. 00:07:30.35\00:07:31.68 That's a perspective, John, that comes usually with age. 00:07:31.71\00:07:34.58 Okay, it makes sense. 00:07:34.62\00:07:35.95 And with the skin in your knees a couple of times. 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.32 Right. You know. 00:07:37.39\00:07:38.72 It's like, oh. 00:07:38.75\00:07:40.76 Bandages on. Yeah. 00:07:40.79\00:07:42.92 You pick up that you were once and you know that 00:07:42.96\00:07:44.46 He's not gonna leave you, He's not gonna forsake you. 00:07:44.49\00:07:45.83 Thank you, Lord. 00:07:45.86\00:07:47.20 And you got to put the meat on that thing. 00:07:47.23\00:07:48.53 Thank you, Lord. Yeah. Yeah. 00:07:48.56\00:07:49.90 I'm grateful. 00:07:49.93\00:07:51.27 You are a fabulous singer, you are. 00:07:51.30\00:07:54.34 You're a good, good, good singer, and you play. 00:07:54.37\00:07:58.07 When did it occur to you that you have musical talent? 00:07:58.11\00:08:00.81 I mean, it's in your family. Right. 00:08:00.84\00:08:02.21 So obviously, fairly early on this kind of jumped out at you. 00:08:02.24\00:08:05.61 Right. Right, right. Yeah. 00:08:05.65\00:08:06.98 My dad actually always tells me the story, 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.95 he says he remembers one day... 00:08:08.98\00:08:10.55 Remember, I told you I had a... 00:08:10.62\00:08:12.29 Well, maybe I didn't say, 00:08:12.32\00:08:13.69 I have an older brother and sister. 00:08:13.72\00:08:15.46 They're 9 and 10 years older than I am respectively. 00:08:15.49\00:08:18.79 And they were taking piano lessons 00:08:18.83\00:08:20.83 so of course I'm very, very young. 00:08:20.86\00:08:22.16 Right. 00:08:22.20\00:08:23.57 And my dad says I was two, three years old 00:08:23.60\00:08:25.80 and I would sit and watch their piano lessons. 00:08:25.83\00:08:29.47 And he said at about three, 00:08:29.50\00:08:31.41 he remembers me crawling up on the piano bench 00:08:31.44\00:08:34.28 after one of their lessons 00:08:34.31\00:08:36.24 and just kind of banging on the piano. 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.78 And he stopped and listened he said, 00:08:38.81\00:08:40.72 "He is trying to poke out." 00:08:40.75\00:08:43.22 He realized I was trying to poke out 00:08:43.25\00:08:44.59 what I heard during the lesson. 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.22 So probably about three or four years old 00:08:46.25\00:08:48.49 when I started trying to figure out this piano thing. 00:08:48.52\00:08:52.36 And then as for singing, you know, 00:08:52.39\00:08:55.13 when I grew up in the Adventist church, 00:08:55.16\00:08:57.47 you know, now I have two young daughters 00:08:57.53\00:08:59.30 12 and 14 00:08:59.33\00:09:00.77 and I probably give them 00:09:00.80\00:09:02.14 more choice than I had growing up, you know. 00:09:02.17\00:09:04.77 When I was growing up, your parents said, 00:09:04.81\00:09:06.24 "Do this, you're gonna be in the choir, 00:09:06.27\00:09:07.71 you're gonna be in this." 00:09:07.74\00:09:09.08 And there was a lady in our church, 00:09:09.11\00:09:10.81 her name was Sister Rue. 00:09:10.88\00:09:12.21 Yes. She lives in Florida now. 00:09:12.25\00:09:13.58 I still see her every once in a while 00:09:13.62\00:09:15.08 and she ask me to sing this song. 00:09:15.12\00:09:17.69 It seemed like it was every week 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.49 that's why I love Him so, 00:09:19.52\00:09:20.99 "Jesus has promised my shepherd to be." 00:09:21.02\00:09:24.19 Man, I hated that song. 00:09:24.26\00:09:25.66 I did not... 00:09:25.69\00:09:28.43 Pastor, she every week, seem like every week, 00:09:28.46\00:09:30.97 she would ask me to sing that song. 00:09:31.00\00:09:32.87 When I figured out I can play the piano, 00:09:32.90\00:09:34.60 man, I don't think I sang in church 00:09:34.64\00:09:36.00 for about 10 years. 00:09:36.04\00:09:37.51 I was so glad I can sit in that corner and playing. 00:09:37.54\00:09:40.48 And it wasn't until I got to high school, 00:09:40.51\00:09:42.38 that I started really singing again 00:09:42.41\00:09:44.31 and writing and so on, 00:09:44.35\00:09:45.68 so now I probably do about the half and half of each. 00:09:45.71\00:09:49.38 Now you write a lot, don't you? I do. 00:09:49.42\00:09:52.25 Work as a song writer and you know, 00:09:52.29\00:09:54.42 obviously a singer and musician, music producer, 00:09:54.46\00:09:56.39 and arranger. 00:09:56.42\00:09:57.76 So it kind of depends on the day of the week, 00:09:57.79\00:09:59.33 you know, what I'm working on. 00:09:59.36\00:10:00.93 And today I could be working on, you know, 00:10:00.96\00:10:04.37 project with the National Symphony 00:10:04.40\00:10:06.17 and tomorrow I could be working with, 00:10:06.20\00:10:08.07 you know, a mainstream jazz artist, 00:10:08.10\00:10:10.57 you know, as an arranger. 00:10:10.61\00:10:11.94 So it's just kind of the gamut in terms of... 00:10:11.97\00:10:14.38 And it's such a blessing for me 00:10:14.41\00:10:15.74 because there's so much diversity 00:10:15.78\00:10:17.95 and I never get bored. 00:10:17.98\00:10:19.45 Because, everyday it's something else 00:10:19.48\00:10:20.82 I get to work with great artists like Jamie 00:10:20.88\00:10:22.48 or my first record as a producer 00:10:22.52\00:10:24.55 was Wintley Phipps, "The Power of a Dream". 00:10:24.59\00:10:26.55 He's been a real blessing to my life. 00:10:26.59\00:10:30.63 So just, you know, 00:10:30.69\00:10:32.49 here and there everyday it's something different. 00:10:32.53\00:10:34.03 Just out of curiosity, I'm gonna... 00:10:34.10\00:10:36.13 A question is popping in my mind 00:10:36.16\00:10:37.50 to lay on you just a minute. 00:10:37.53\00:10:39.47 But what is the role, the job of a music producer? 00:10:39.50\00:10:43.20 I think probably the best way... 00:10:43.24\00:10:45.11 I get that question every once in a while. 00:10:45.14\00:10:47.21 I think the best way to explain it is 00:10:47.24\00:10:51.58 if you have a song, 00:10:51.61\00:10:55.08 in other words you can sit down at the piano, 00:10:55.12\00:10:57.35 where you can just sing a song in a voice recorder, 00:10:57.42\00:10:59.25 you can come up to me and sing a song. 00:10:59.29\00:11:01.09 The producer is the person who takes it from that thing 00:11:01.12\00:11:05.46 and makes it to what you hear when you buy the CD 00:11:05.49\00:11:08.00 or when you hear it on the radio. 00:11:08.03\00:11:09.36 So whatever... 00:11:09.40\00:11:10.73 So you actually got a lot of creative control over that. 00:11:10.77\00:11:12.10 Yeah, whatever that process is, 00:11:12.13\00:11:13.50 you know, sometimes you have producers who play a lot. 00:11:13.54\00:11:15.87 So they, you know, they'll sit down and play 00:11:15.90\00:11:18.47 and actually do the arrangements. 00:11:18.51\00:11:19.84 You have other producers 00:11:19.87\00:11:21.21 who don't play an instrument at all. 00:11:21.24\00:11:22.68 They just have a vision of what it should be. 00:11:22.71\00:11:25.75 I worked with the legendary R&B producer 00:11:25.78\00:11:29.05 by the name of David Porter. 00:11:29.08\00:11:30.45 He worked in the stacks area. 00:11:30.49\00:11:33.96 He was one of the original stacks producers 00:11:34.02\00:11:36.22 but he doesn't play anything. 00:11:36.26\00:11:37.86 He is a guy who will sit, he always come to me John, 00:11:37.89\00:11:40.56 just go and play this or kind of do this, 00:11:40.60\00:11:43.33 kind of do that. 00:11:43.40\00:11:45.20 And he just had this, he could hear it all in his head, 00:11:45.23\00:11:47.84 he couldn't play a thing. 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.20 So you get different types of producers, 00:11:49.24\00:11:52.47 who have their different approach 00:11:52.51\00:11:54.54 to getting it from that seed, that idea... 00:11:54.58\00:11:56.58 Right. To what you hear in the end. 00:11:56.61\00:11:58.41 And sometimes they're more involved and even creating it. 00:11:58.45\00:12:01.05 Sometimes the song becomes part of the whole, 00:12:01.08\00:12:04.09 sort of all evolves together the song, the production, 00:12:04.12\00:12:07.39 you know, are you gonna put drums in it, 00:12:07.46\00:12:08.89 you're gonna have violins, or you're gonna have 00:12:08.92\00:12:11.09 a choir on it or you're gonna have guitar, 00:12:11.13\00:12:13.13 or you're gonna have, you know, whatever instrument. 00:12:13.16\00:12:15.06 Does a producer have the platform, 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.93 the power to tell the artists, sing it this way? 00:12:16.97\00:12:20.50 They do, you know, it depends on the artist 00:12:20.54\00:12:22.94 that you have to tread softly... 00:12:22.97\00:12:25.01 Yeah. 00:12:25.04\00:12:27.14 Depending on the artist but, you know, a big part of it 00:12:27.18\00:12:29.11 because it's a very vulnerable thing. 00:12:29.14\00:12:30.61 You're standing there in front of that microphone 00:12:30.65\00:12:32.31 and you're bearing your soul. 00:12:32.35\00:12:33.68 So big role of the producer is to really try to pull the best, 00:12:33.72\00:12:37.15 be out of that artist... 00:12:37.19\00:12:38.72 Yeah. 00:12:38.75\00:12:40.12 You know, you want to make sure they feel comfortable. 00:12:40.16\00:12:41.69 You got to know just how much to push, 00:12:41.72\00:12:43.89 just how much to kind of caress and make sure 00:12:43.93\00:12:47.03 that they are feeling good, you know. 00:12:47.10\00:12:48.83 And it's nice being an artist because I get to be 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.93 on both sides of that, so I can be sensitive to a person. 00:12:50.97\00:12:53.67 You know, it's a vulnerable place to be as an artist 00:12:53.70\00:12:56.34 behind that microphone and people can listen 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.67 to your every crack and every mistake 00:12:58.71\00:13:01.28 at that one fight on pitch, you know it, man. 00:13:01.31\00:13:06.01 You are surprisingly vulnerable 00:13:06.05\00:13:07.88 to what's being said on the other side of that glass 00:13:07.92\00:13:10.12 and they could build you up 00:13:10.19\00:13:11.69 or they can tear you down, man, that's rough. 00:13:11.72\00:13:13.05 They hit the button and say, "Just a second." 00:13:13.09\00:13:14.89 Then you just hear a silence just staring at the room, 00:13:14.92\00:13:17.46 you're like and what are they saying about me? 00:13:17.53\00:13:19.36 Yeah. 00:13:19.39\00:13:20.73 They are talking about me and is that good. 00:13:20.80\00:13:22.66 So they can really work with your head. Yeah. 00:13:22.70\00:13:26.13 Let me ask you this, John, and I tend to ask 00:13:26.17\00:13:28.34 this kind of one of those 00:13:28.37\00:13:29.70 high concept ontological questions 00:13:29.74\00:13:31.37 we ask every now and again. 00:13:31.41\00:13:32.74 Okay. 00:13:32.77\00:13:34.14 Talk to me about the intersection of performance 00:13:34.18\00:13:39.15 and ministry. 00:13:39.18\00:13:41.75 If that is in your mind, and I ask a lot of artists this 00:13:41.78\00:13:44.19 because in other words, God has given you a gift. 00:13:44.25\00:13:47.22 It's your job to improve that gift. 00:13:47.26\00:13:49.22 Right. So that you perform well. 00:13:49.26\00:13:51.26 Right. 00:13:51.29\00:13:52.63 But where is the intersection of your ability and ministry 00:13:52.66\00:13:55.20 or performance? 00:13:55.23\00:13:56.60 What is a performance and ministry? 00:13:56.63\00:13:58.60 Right. 00:13:58.63\00:14:00.04 I'm going to answer that question 00:14:00.07\00:14:03.54 in maybe a way that it's a bit unusual, 00:14:03.61\00:14:06.34 particularly in this context. 00:14:06.37\00:14:08.38 I do a fair amount of working 00:14:08.41\00:14:11.98 what we call the mainstream music industry. 00:14:12.01\00:14:13.62 In other words, I am not always performing in churches. 00:14:13.65\00:14:15.65 I perform in concert venues and other types of arenas 00:14:15.68\00:14:18.39 all around the world. 00:14:18.42\00:14:19.75 And I'm not always intravenous 00:14:19.79\00:14:22.12 where I am labeled a gospel artist. 00:14:22.16\00:14:26.90 All right. 00:14:26.93\00:14:28.96 So part of my calling is to take the message of Christ 00:14:29.00\00:14:34.57 into those arenas. 00:14:34.60\00:14:35.94 And a big part of what gives you credibility 00:14:37.07\00:14:42.18 and let say, a jazz festival, 00:14:42.21\00:14:46.08 is if you are good at playing the piano let's say. 00:14:46.11\00:14:50.45 So no one wants to hear anything about 00:14:50.49\00:14:54.02 what you have to say or believe in that context 00:14:54.06\00:14:56.99 if you aren't good at what you do. 00:14:57.03\00:15:00.33 You understand what I'm saying? Yeah. 00:15:00.36\00:15:01.66 So for me the intersection between performance 00:15:01.70\00:15:06.10 and I'll even expand that 00:15:06.13\00:15:07.47 to say proficiency or ability... 00:15:07.54\00:15:10.41 I like that. 00:15:10.44\00:15:11.77 Or virtuosity, let's call it that. 00:15:11.81\00:15:13.14 Yeah. 00:15:13.17\00:15:14.81 I think they're very closely related 00:15:14.84\00:15:16.75 because that's what opens the door in that context, 00:15:16.78\00:15:20.22 especially for someone for you to be able to say, 00:15:20.25\00:15:24.02 "Hey, man, you know, 00:15:24.09\00:15:25.42 the reason I practice this way or the reason 00:15:25.45\00:15:28.46 where I have the work ethic I do is because of my faith." 00:15:28.49\00:15:32.46 My faith. Yeah. Right. 00:15:32.49\00:15:33.83 So but if you're not good, no one cares. 00:15:33.90\00:15:35.83 Precisely. Yeah. 00:15:35.86\00:15:37.23 If you're sloppy then no one is listening to you. 00:15:37.27\00:15:38.60 Yeah. Yeah. No one cares. 00:15:38.63\00:15:40.00 And I think it's also interesting 00:15:40.04\00:15:41.94 that we probably have 00:15:41.97\00:15:47.44 more entertainment 00:15:47.48\00:15:49.91 in our worship experiences 00:15:49.94\00:15:52.68 and some of these other experiences 00:15:52.71\00:15:54.08 then probably we realize. 00:15:54.12\00:15:55.45 Yeah. 00:15:55.48\00:15:56.82 You're much more likely to connect and enjoy 00:15:56.85\00:16:00.79 and takeaway from a preacher who is entertaining, 00:16:00.82\00:16:04.69 who is interesting to listen to you. 00:16:04.73\00:16:06.73 Yeah. You know what I mean? 00:16:06.76\00:16:08.10 And in some places that's a dirty word... 00:16:08.13\00:16:09.46 Right. 00:16:09.50\00:16:10.87 But you are competing for the ear of your public 00:16:10.90\00:16:15.37 who is getting a lot of messages during the week. 00:16:15.40\00:16:17.74 So if you don't culture your message in... 00:16:17.77\00:16:20.68 I mean, we had a great preacher... 00:16:20.71\00:16:22.04 No, he wasn't a great preacher, he was great theologian, 00:16:22.08\00:16:25.51 Uriah Smith 00:16:25.55\00:16:26.92 and even a General Conference president said, 00:16:26.95\00:16:28.85 you know, we got spirit, we got truth. 00:16:28.88\00:16:30.59 He is good on truth. 00:16:30.62\00:16:32.69 Yeah, you need to work on the spirit part. 00:16:32.72\00:16:34.49 Yeah, you need to work on that spirit part little bit. 00:16:34.52\00:16:36.16 So, yeah, the fact is that you have to hold your audience. 00:16:36.19\00:16:40.83 So that you have to put your wine in a bottle 00:16:40.90\00:16:43.83 that is attractive... 00:16:43.87\00:16:45.20 Right. To your audience. 00:16:45.23\00:16:46.57 So and music especially 00:16:46.60\00:16:47.94 because your audience is getting all kinds of messages. 00:16:47.97\00:16:49.97 So you can give them truth but if they're asleep 00:16:50.01\00:16:51.74 then I couldn't get it. 00:16:51.77\00:16:53.11 Here is another analogy, 00:16:53.14\00:16:57.01 if you gonna have cake with icing, 00:16:57.05\00:16:59.55 there's nothing wrong with the little bit of icing. 00:16:59.58\00:17:01.38 Just make sure there is some cake there too. 00:17:01.42\00:17:03.08 I like that. Yeah. You don't want all icing. 00:17:03.12\00:17:04.92 You don't want all icing. Yeah. 00:17:04.95\00:17:07.39 You want some cake. You know what I mean? 00:17:07.42\00:17:08.86 So that's kind of the way I think about it, man. 00:17:11.29\00:17:12.99 And again the context that I work in most of the time, 00:17:13.03\00:17:17.60 we'll get a moment to share our faith. 00:17:17.63\00:17:20.24 You know, as oppose to say a church service 00:17:20.27\00:17:22.00 where the whole thing is geared, 00:17:22.04\00:17:23.41 so we have our moment. 00:17:23.44\00:17:24.77 So everything is sort of crafted 00:17:24.81\00:17:26.34 particularly with a lot of the guys that I worked with 00:17:26.37\00:17:28.28 who are also people of faith 00:17:28.31\00:17:29.88 working in this sort of mainstream paradigm. 00:17:29.91\00:17:33.42 We know that, hey, the reason we're here is 00:17:33.45\00:17:35.58 for that moment where we share our faith. 00:17:35.62\00:17:37.22 Yeah. So we're crafting everything... 00:17:37.29\00:17:39.25 Okay. 00:17:39.29\00:17:40.66 To bring people's attention and to tear down walls 00:17:40.69\00:17:42.99 and to just, "Oh, man, I'm having 00:17:43.02\00:17:44.66 such a great time and, oh, man, 00:17:44.69\00:17:46.56 I'm really connecting with the people upfront 00:17:46.59\00:17:48.40 and I'm enjoying this music." 00:17:48.43\00:17:50.23 And then you take them to this moment 00:17:50.27\00:17:51.73 where you get to share... 00:17:51.77\00:17:53.10 Yeah. 00:17:53.13\00:17:54.47 That faith and then you go back. 00:17:54.50\00:17:55.84 Yeah. Yeah. What you're doing. 00:17:55.87\00:17:57.21 And I think that... 00:17:57.27\00:17:59.07 again our experience has been that you're in position 00:17:59.11\00:18:03.98 to be able to have that degree of influence with them 00:18:04.01\00:18:07.55 because they have so much respect for me 00:18:07.58\00:18:10.12 and those hours that because you realize 00:18:10.15\00:18:12.72 this is a gift that God has given you 00:18:12.75\00:18:14.19 that you're off when no nobody is looking practicing, 00:18:14.22\00:18:16.62 you know, working on your craft and so and so forth. 00:18:16.66\00:18:18.66 Yeah. I appreciate that answer. 00:18:18.69\00:18:20.33 And it does give a whole new ministry aspiring 00:18:20.36\00:18:24.47 to what you do? 00:18:24.50\00:18:25.83 It's part of the ministry. Yeah. 00:18:25.87\00:18:27.24 It is not another thing over here. 00:18:27.27\00:18:28.60 It's all part, it's all one thing. 00:18:28.64\00:18:29.97 Predicated on your ability that you put in the time 00:18:30.01\00:18:32.44 to do the work to be legitimate. 00:18:32.47\00:18:34.61 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:34.64\00:18:35.98 Your first worship is in the practice room. 00:18:36.01\00:18:39.65 All right. Yeah. Well said. 00:18:39.68\00:18:42.18 Your first worship is in the practice room. 00:18:42.22\00:18:43.62 Speaking of worship in practice. 00:18:43.69\00:18:45.02 Let's go to some songs, man, because... 00:18:45.05\00:18:46.69 We're talking... 00:18:46.76\00:18:48.09 We can talk this whole thing out. 00:18:48.12\00:18:49.46 Yeah. 00:18:49.49\00:18:50.83 Have you ever been lonely? Is that an original song? 00:18:50.86\00:18:53.26 That is an original song that I wrote 00:18:53.29\00:18:55.43 with a good buddy of mine by the name of Joey Kibble. 00:18:55.46\00:18:58.97 He sings with this up and coming group. 00:18:59.00\00:19:01.00 Yeah. Yeah. 00:19:01.04\00:19:02.37 If they stay at, they're gonna really do well. 00:19:02.40\00:19:04.24 I think it's a little group called Take 6. 00:19:04.27\00:19:06.37 Take 6. Yes. 00:19:06.41\00:19:07.74 I always encourage them and say, 00:19:07.78\00:19:09.11 "Guys, if you stick at it, 00:19:09.14\00:19:10.48 you're gonna be something someday." 00:19:10.51\00:19:13.08 I'm joking. 00:19:13.11\00:19:14.45 But, you know, I have such 00:19:14.48\00:19:15.82 profound respect for those guys. 00:19:15.85\00:19:17.22 Joey is a good buddy of mine 00:19:17.25\00:19:18.59 and he was so gracious to help me on this song 00:19:18.62\00:19:19.95 and it was inspired by the text 00:19:19.99\00:19:23.02 in Hebrews 4 where God talks about... 00:19:23.06\00:19:26.06 where they talk about "We don't have a high priest 00:19:26.09\00:19:28.53 who's not touched 00:19:28.56\00:19:29.93 with the feeling of our infirmities." 00:19:29.96\00:19:31.30 So I always tell people when they're listening to this song 00:19:31.33\00:19:34.57 because it's written sort of in the first person 00:19:34.60\00:19:36.64 to imagine Jesus himself singing these words to you. 00:19:36.71\00:19:41.14 There is so much loneliness in our world, 00:19:41.18\00:19:44.08 even with all the social media and Twitter and Facebook... 00:19:44.15\00:19:46.48 Yeah. Yeah. And all these. 00:19:46.51\00:19:48.05 But sometimes it feels like, man, 00:19:48.08\00:19:50.22 people are even more disconnected than ever. 00:19:50.29\00:19:53.46 And so well, we wrote the song called 00:19:53.49\00:19:55.56 "Have you ever been lonely?" 00:19:55.59\00:19:56.93 And it's just an encouragement where Jesus is saying, 00:19:56.96\00:20:00.00 "Hey, you know what? 00:20:00.03\00:20:01.33 I know how you're feeling." 00:20:01.36\00:20:02.70 Not that you are out there somewhere and I'm with you, 00:20:02.73\00:20:06.80 and I've been through what you've been through. 00:20:06.84\00:20:08.17 So I feel from a very personal place, 00:20:08.20\00:20:09.70 "Have you ever been lonely?" 00:20:09.74\00:20:11.07 You know, like you said Joey Kibble, and I said, 00:20:11.11\00:20:12.44 I'll stick and send thereof, 00:20:12.47\00:20:13.84 those guys are from Buffalo, New York, 00:20:13.88\00:20:15.21 that's my home church we grew up with those guys, 00:20:15.24\00:20:16.58 the Willis's, and of course I'm little closer to Mark, 00:20:16.61\00:20:18.78 and Avon, Karen and all those Willis's, yeah. 00:20:18.81\00:20:22.35 Good people, man. All are from Buffalo, New York. 00:20:22.38\00:20:23.75 Great people, great friends, amazing artists. 00:20:23.79\00:20:25.49 Very much so. "Have you ever been lonely?" 00:20:25.52\00:20:28.79 Let's hear it. 00:20:28.82\00:20:30.19 I can feel your pain in my side 00:20:45.07\00:20:48.71 I can see the tears you can't cry 00:20:48.74\00:20:51.81 I know sometimes you feel all alone 00:20:58.75\00:21:01.99 I could pray into the sky of stone 00:21:02.02\00:21:06.39 But you never know how much you mean to me 00:21:11.03\00:21:17.74 And how forever my love can be 00:21:17.77\00:21:24.65 Have you ever been lonely 00:21:24.68\00:21:28.12 Then I know how you feel. 00:21:28.15\00:21:31.42 When the nearest hugs a million miles away 00:21:31.45\00:21:37.96 When you're looking for sunshine 00:21:37.99\00:21:41.63 In the middle of the day 00:21:41.66\00:21:45.17 Then I know how you feel 00:21:45.20\00:21:49.94 But it's gonna be okay 00:21:49.97\00:21:53.17 Oh, thank you, Jesus 00:21:55.74\00:21:57.65 I know all about your heartache 00:21:59.61\00:22:03.62 And all the love you try to think 00:22:03.69\00:22:07.99 Without breaking 00:22:08.02\00:22:10.63 Just breaking down 00:22:10.66\00:22:13.13 I felt gonna to with those days 00:22:13.16\00:22:16.63 With no matter what you do or say 00:22:16.67\00:22:20.60 Nothing's gonna stop the pain 00:22:20.64\00:22:25.54 But you never know how much you mean to me 00:22:25.57\00:22:32.15 Until you see me at Calvary 00:22:32.18\00:22:37.25 Have you ever been lonely 00:22:37.29\00:22:41.82 To being alone, how you feel 00:22:41.86\00:22:45.76 When the nearest hugs a million miles away 00:22:45.79\00:22:52.57 When you're looking for sunshine 00:22:52.60\00:22:55.87 In the middle of the day 00:22:55.90\00:22:59.24 Then I know how you feel 00:22:59.27\00:23:04.38 But it's gonna be okay 00:23:04.41\00:23:07.85 'Cause I'll never leave you alone 00:23:07.88\00:23:14.79 I know the sun is gonna shine again 00:23:14.82\00:23:20.96 And I can tell you 00:23:20.96\00:23:23.03 How the story is gonna end 00:23:23.06\00:23:25.87 You're gonna make it 00:23:25.90\00:23:27.80 Have you ever been lonely 00:23:33.04\00:23:37.21 Jesus knows how it feels 00:23:37.25\00:23:40.08 When the nearest hugs a million miles away 00:23:40.12\00:23:46.59 When you're looking for sunshine 00:23:46.62\00:23:50.13 In the middle of the day 00:23:50.19\00:23:53.29 Then I know how it feels 00:23:53.36\00:23:58.53 Have you ever been lonely 00:23:58.57\00:24:03.71 Then I know how you feel 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.78 When the nearest hugs 00:24:06.81\00:24:08.88 A million miles away 00:24:08.91\00:24:13.72 When you're looking for sunshine 00:24:13.75\00:24:17.19 In the middle of the day 00:24:17.22\00:24:20.46 Then I know 00:24:20.49\00:24:22.46 I know how it feels 00:24:22.49\00:24:27.50 But it's gonna be 00:24:27.50\00:24:30.83 It's gonna be okay 00:24:30.87\00:24:34.27 It's gonna be 00:24:34.30\00:24:36.10 It's gonna be okay 00:24:36.14\00:24:39.27 Well done. 00:24:48.65\00:24:50.25 Good song, good message. Oh, Praise God. 00:24:50.29\00:24:51.69 Yeah. Well done. 00:24:51.72\00:24:53.05 We're sitting here and kind of talking 00:24:53.09\00:24:54.42 and you know, once you get in the Adventist loop... 00:24:54.46\00:24:57.19 You're right. Exactly. 00:24:57.23\00:24:58.56 Everybody knows, everybody know you. 00:24:58.59\00:25:00.66 You start pulling out names, yeah, I know him. 00:25:00.73\00:25:02.33 I know him. Oh, you know him. Oh, wow. 00:25:02.36\00:25:04.50 That kind of thing. 00:25:04.53\00:25:05.87 What impresses you when you're writing? 00:25:05.90\00:25:08.17 Where you're trying to go? Where you're trying to take? 00:25:08.20\00:25:10.14 Because in preaching you've seen something, 00:25:10.21\00:25:12.54 you've been some places, 00:25:12.57\00:25:13.91 you're trying to bring your audience to that place. 00:25:13.98\00:25:16.31 Is it the same when you're doing music? 00:25:16.34\00:25:17.68 I think so, you know, 00:25:17.71\00:25:19.05 I write a lot from personal experience, 00:25:19.08\00:25:21.55 you know, so obviously that's a big part of... 00:25:21.58\00:25:24.55 I think for a lot of writers 00:25:24.59\00:25:25.92 you're writing from some sort of 00:25:25.95\00:25:27.66 either something you've witnessed, 00:25:27.69\00:25:29.26 or something you've experienced. 00:25:29.29\00:25:31.66 So a lot of my writing is inspired by that... 00:25:31.69\00:25:35.70 I did a project called 00:25:35.73\00:25:37.07 "Faith Hope Love" a few years ago. 00:25:37.13\00:25:39.60 And it was essentially a chronicle 00:25:39.63\00:25:42.34 of maybe the first 10 years of my marriage. 00:25:42.37\00:25:44.11 Oh, wow. 00:25:44.17\00:25:45.51 And it was really, really turbulent, you know, 00:25:45.54\00:25:47.98 I use that word because we're on television 00:25:48.01\00:25:51.31 I probably can't use a different word 00:25:51.35\00:25:54.02 to really describe what it was like. 00:25:54.08\00:25:56.75 But it was just really, really tough 00:25:56.79\00:25:59.19 and after my wife and I came through that 00:25:59.22\00:26:01.76 and we began realizing that, 00:26:01.79\00:26:03.22 man, we're not the only ones who've gone through this. 00:26:03.26\00:26:07.03 And we wanted to share the story 00:26:07.13\00:26:08.43 especially for younger couples 00:26:08.46\00:26:09.90 who were going through what we went through to say, 00:26:09.93\00:26:11.67 "Hey, okay. 00:26:11.70\00:26:13.03 This is a tough time 00:26:13.07\00:26:14.40 but happens to all of us, hold on." 00:26:14.44\00:26:16.84 You know, latch on to an older couple 00:26:16.91\00:26:18.34 that can kind of help shepherd you through it. 00:26:18.37\00:26:20.18 Yeah. 00:26:20.21\00:26:21.54 And you go and make it just hang in there. 00:26:21.58\00:26:23.58 And we had some people do that for us, 00:26:23.65\00:26:25.05 so we're just trying to share that... 00:26:25.08\00:26:26.41 So that was an example of writing 00:26:26.45\00:26:28.45 from your own personal experience 00:26:28.48\00:26:29.88 and how it can help the music. 00:26:29.92\00:26:31.25 I want you to talk about a song. 00:26:31.29\00:26:32.72 It's not on the list, we're not gonna hear today. 00:26:32.75\00:26:34.42 Okay. 00:26:34.46\00:26:35.79 But you did it last year that knocked us out, 00:26:35.82\00:26:37.46 "Only on Christmas Day". 00:26:37.53\00:26:38.86 "Only on Christmas day". Yeah. 00:26:38.89\00:26:40.23 When you play that we're like, wow. 00:26:40.26\00:26:42.40 That was a fun song, man. Yeah. 00:26:42.43\00:26:44.03 I wrote that again, co-write with another amazing writer 00:26:44.07\00:26:47.30 by the name of Hallerin Hilton. 00:26:47.34\00:26:49.00 You know Hallerin? 00:26:49.04\00:26:50.37 Went to school with this brothers, 00:26:50.41\00:26:51.74 Holly and Bryon. 00:26:51.77\00:26:53.11 Oh, what an amazing song writer. 00:26:53.14\00:26:54.48 I'm such a huge fan of his. 00:26:54.51\00:26:56.21 And he just did a really great job 00:26:56.24\00:26:58.75 of helping me craft this image... 00:26:58.78\00:27:00.95 Yeah. 00:27:00.98\00:27:02.32 Of sitting in that kitchen, watching my grandmother make 00:27:02.35\00:27:04.92 you know, the rolls. 00:27:04.95\00:27:06.29 My grandmother used to make these cinnamon rolls, man. 00:27:06.32\00:27:09.12 And she was such a woman of incredible not only faith 00:27:09.16\00:27:13.93 but what I call practical... 00:27:13.96\00:27:16.56 Yes. Christianity. 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.30 You know, my grandmother was a type 00:27:18.33\00:27:20.44 who was and what we call the herd, 00:27:20.47\00:27:23.20 and everyone knew her. 00:27:23.24\00:27:24.57 Okay. Yeah. She wasn't just a visitor. 00:27:24.61\00:27:26.51 That's where she hung out because that was where 00:27:26.54\00:27:29.44 she was caught in ministry, she was feeding people. 00:27:29.48\00:27:31.61 So I have these images in my head, 00:27:31.65\00:27:33.62 you know, I remember, growing up with my grandmother 00:27:33.65\00:27:35.48 and so helping to write that song... 00:27:35.52\00:27:36.89 Yeah. "Only on Christmas Day." 00:27:36.92\00:27:38.25 That's a big part of what helped me 00:27:38.29\00:27:39.79 develop my faith watching it 00:27:39.82\00:27:41.49 in action with someone like my grandmother. 00:27:41.52\00:27:43.16 The song is, it's in a sweet place. 00:27:43.19\00:27:44.66 Yeah, man. Just feel good. It's a nice song. 00:27:44.69\00:27:48.43 Okay. Back to business. Okay. Back to business. 00:27:48.46\00:27:51.23 "My tree", is actually what we gonna here. 00:27:51.27\00:27:53.44 Yes, my tree is a song that was written by an artist 00:27:53.50\00:27:57.21 by the name of Chris Rice. 00:27:57.27\00:27:58.81 And I remember hearing it for the first time 00:27:58.84\00:28:01.64 back in college 00:28:01.68\00:28:03.01 and it really just knocked me out. 00:28:03.04\00:28:06.15 And I don't even wanna say too much about 00:28:06.18\00:28:09.05 specifically what it is because the imagery is 00:28:09.08\00:28:12.69 so powerful when you just let the story develop. 00:28:12.72\00:28:17.46 And it's an example of a song that tells a story 00:28:17.49\00:28:20.83 and, I mean, a real life story. 00:28:20.86\00:28:22.50 Yes. 00:28:22.53\00:28:23.87 And makes the connection, we're talking a little bit 00:28:23.90\00:28:26.00 earlier about the intersection of performance and ministry. 00:28:26.03\00:28:31.07 And a big part of what we do when we're in a mainstream 00:28:31.11\00:28:34.74 especially is to disarm people, we use things 00:28:34.78\00:28:39.91 that they can relate to like working with the kids 00:28:39.95\00:28:43.99 or marriage or everyone has a job 00:28:44.02\00:28:45.79 or everyone has a difficult, 00:28:45.82\00:28:47.36 whatever difficulty with their parents. 00:28:47.39\00:28:49.69 And those types of things that they're parables, 00:28:49.72\00:28:52.46 that's what Jesus did. 00:28:52.49\00:28:53.83 Precisely. Right. He told the stories to... 00:28:53.90\00:28:55.20 And so this to me is that kind of a song 00:28:55.23\00:28:57.03 and I always said that, you know what? 00:28:57.07\00:28:59.27 One day I'm gonna record that song. 00:28:59.30\00:29:00.90 And I've gotten a chance to sing it all over the world 00:29:00.97\00:29:03.94 and it always just hits the spot 00:29:03.97\00:29:06.71 just because of how it takes a story 00:29:06.74\00:29:09.58 something we can all relate to 00:29:09.61\00:29:11.28 and uses it to be able to frame the story of the gospel. 00:29:11.31\00:29:16.32 So "My tree." My tree. 00:29:16.35\00:29:17.82 On a hill far away 00:29:36.07\00:29:40.18 Stood a tall mighty tree 00:29:40.21\00:29:44.48 Where a boy and girl used to take turns 00:29:44.51\00:29:48.18 Pushing the tire swing 00:29:48.22\00:29:51.49 I remember the pocketknife in hand 00:29:51.52\00:29:56.56 Her name in my heart 00:29:56.59\00:29:59.86 Thinkin' there ain't no way for a boy to explain 00:29:59.89\00:30:04.67 The love that he feels inside 00:30:04.70\00:30:10.61 So I carved her name into my tree 00:30:10.67\00:30:16.91 Then I carved a heart around her name 00:30:16.95\00:30:23.22 Then I carved an arrow 00:30:23.25\00:30:25.79 Through the heart 00:30:25.82\00:30:31.43 Just to say "I love you" 00:30:31.46\00:30:34.46 On a hill far away 00:30:41.17\00:30:45.61 Stood an old rugged cross 00:30:45.64\00:30:50.48 The emblem of suffering 00:30:50.51\00:30:54.88 And shame 00:30:54.92\00:30:57.82 I remember the nails 00:30:57.85\00:31:00.46 Through my hands 00:31:00.49\00:31:03.53 And your name in my heart 00:31:03.56\00:31:07.13 And how in their wordless way 00:31:07.20\00:31:10.33 The nails explain the love that I feel inside 00:31:10.37\00:31:16.04 As they carved your name into my tree 00:31:16.07\00:31:22.21 Where I wrapped my heart around your name 00:31:22.24\00:31:28.52 Then I took your arrow 00:31:28.55\00:31:31.35 Through my heart 00:31:31.39\00:31:36.32 Just to say "I love you" 00:31:36.36\00:31:41.10 I really love you 00:31:41.13\00:31:45.03 Now I can never forget 00:31:45.07\00:31:49.10 How much you mean to me 00:31:49.14\00:31:53.01 'Cause I will always remember 00:31:53.04\00:31:57.85 Whenever I see 00:31:57.88\00:32:02.22 where they carved your name 00:32:02.25\00:32:05.05 Into my tree 00:32:05.09\00:32:09.19 Where I wrapped my heart 00:32:09.22\00:32:12.09 Around your name 00:32:12.13\00:32:17.73 Then I took your arrow 00:32:17.77\00:32:20.50 Through my heart 00:32:20.54\00:32:27.34 Just to say "I love you" 00:32:27.38\00:32:30.91 How much I love you, yes I do 00:32:37.09\00:32:42.36 Oh, Jesus loves you, yes He does 00:32:46.66\00:32:52.77 Powerful, very powerful. 00:34:03.81\00:34:05.64 John, I wanna ask you a question and I don't know 00:34:05.67\00:34:07.71 if it's even an intelligent question. 00:34:07.74\00:34:09.54 Oh, boy. 00:34:09.58\00:34:10.95 It encourages me in watching you 00:34:10.98\00:34:13.01 do that particular song. 00:34:13.05\00:34:18.02 The Bible says that 00:34:18.05\00:34:19.52 God didn't have suppresses of his people. 00:34:19.55\00:34:21.89 There are certain artists 00:34:21.92\00:34:23.29 and the only way that I can articulate this is 00:34:23.32\00:34:27.00 who inhabit the music that they sing. 00:34:27.03\00:34:30.93 You appear to do that, 00:34:30.97\00:34:33.13 how invested are you in your craft 00:34:33.17\00:34:37.37 as far as watching you sing that song, 00:34:37.41\00:34:40.28 one comes with impression, number one, 00:34:40.34\00:34:42.31 you believe what you're saying 00:34:42.34\00:34:44.05 and that the song is doing something for you. 00:34:44.11\00:34:46.58 And of course, it was doing something for you, 00:34:46.61\00:34:48.22 it will do something for me. 00:34:48.25\00:34:49.58 Right. 00:34:49.62\00:34:50.95 So how invested are you in the music that you produce, 00:34:50.99\00:34:53.22 the music that you sing, the things that you choose? 00:34:53.25\00:34:55.46 Yeah. 00:34:55.49\00:34:56.83 I think that... 00:34:56.89\00:35:01.73 that's the artist's thing. 00:35:01.76\00:35:03.77 Here we talk about being an artist. 00:35:03.80\00:35:07.54 You know, as a songwriter and producer, 00:35:07.57\00:35:11.84 you're approaching it 00:35:11.87\00:35:15.38 from a bit of a different place perspective. 00:35:15.41\00:35:18.91 But if you're gonna sing or play a song 00:35:18.95\00:35:22.58 and really communicate the essence of what it is, 00:35:22.62\00:35:27.16 I don't know that you can unless you are invested in it. 00:35:27.19\00:35:31.59 I don't know how else you can do it. 00:35:31.63\00:35:34.50 And, you know, so yes, so I always did, 00:35:34.56\00:35:38.20 there're certain songs that I 00:35:38.23\00:35:39.57 gravitated toward like that song 00:35:39.60\00:35:40.94 I mentioned was the song that 00:35:40.97\00:35:42.74 I just from the very beginning. 00:35:42.77\00:35:44.41 It's like, man, that song, I just connect with the story. 00:35:44.44\00:35:47.78 How it's presented, you know, how it was put together. 00:35:47.81\00:35:51.55 So, yeah, very invested in what I do 00:35:51.58\00:35:56.22 and the music that I write 00:35:56.25\00:35:58.35 and the music that God gives me. 00:35:58.39\00:36:00.12 You know, there are times when it feels like 00:36:00.19\00:36:02.22 I'm almost more taking dictation than really creating. 00:36:02.26\00:36:05.63 Yeah, and I've heard other artists say that. 00:36:05.66\00:36:07.76 Yeah, I write stuff it's not me. 00:36:07.76\00:36:09.10 Yeah. 00:36:09.13\00:36:10.47 It's just kind of flowing through me. 00:36:10.50\00:36:11.83 Yeah, yeah. 00:36:11.87\00:36:13.20 And I understand that in and as a producer 00:36:13.23\00:36:15.10 you got to be little more clinical, little more surgical. 00:36:15.14\00:36:17.01 Little more. 00:36:17.04\00:36:18.37 Yeah, that's probably good way of thinking about it. 00:36:18.41\00:36:19.74 Yeah, but this one you can kind of just surrender 00:36:19.77\00:36:21.34 to what's going on. 00:36:21.38\00:36:22.71 Right, right. Yeah. 00:36:22.74\00:36:24.08 You're facilitating as a producer. 00:36:24.15\00:36:25.48 You know, what I mean, you're sort of helping an artist 00:36:25.51\00:36:27.12 get to that place with them, you know so. 00:36:27.15\00:36:30.19 Yeah. Well done. Man, it's good talking you. 00:36:30.22\00:36:32.29 Yeah. This is great. 00:36:32.32\00:36:33.66 Whenever we got a chance, we have to just schedule 00:36:33.69\00:36:35.22 one of these about once a month as we catch up, we connect. 00:36:35.26\00:36:39.06 Man, it's just good stuff. 00:36:39.09\00:36:40.83 When you were here last year, it was work. 00:36:40.90\00:36:44.03 It is we're working, we were working with producer thing. 00:36:44.07\00:36:45.60 Good to hangout this time. Yeah. 00:36:45.63\00:36:47.00 We have a good time little bit. 00:36:47.04\00:36:48.37 "I Turn to You", set that up for me. 00:36:48.40\00:36:49.74 "I Turn to You," I wrote with a really dear friend of mine, 00:36:49.77\00:36:52.51 an artist that God connected me with... 00:36:52.54\00:36:54.98 who lives in Stockholm. 00:36:55.01\00:36:56.58 And just I can't... 00:36:56.61\00:36:58.41 I have to think about how we even met, 00:36:58.45\00:36:59.85 it feels like we've known each other forever. 00:36:59.88\00:37:01.82 But again like with Hallerin, you know, 00:37:01.85\00:37:03.45 I had this skeleton of an idea that she helped me flush out. 00:37:03.52\00:37:06.82 And I've been thinking a lot more recently, CA, 00:37:06.89\00:37:11.23 about what is the difference between 00:37:11.26\00:37:15.40 a believer and a nonbeliever? 00:37:15.43\00:37:17.70 And a big part of that, man, is 00:37:17.73\00:37:21.54 where do you turn when things are great, 00:37:21.57\00:37:26.14 when you're like, "Oh, man, I had the best day." 00:37:26.17\00:37:28.28 Right. 00:37:28.31\00:37:29.64 Where do you turn? I like that, "I Turn to You". 00:42:43.93\00:42:46.26 That's your question and we're kind of trading a line here 00:42:46.29\00:42:48.70 because when you're writing a sermon, 00:42:48.73\00:42:52.67 there are times hopefully or preferably 00:42:52.70\00:42:56.74 that you are under the spirit of God every time you do that, 00:42:56.77\00:42:58.97 but the truth is there are times when you, 00:42:59.01\00:43:00.98 as you put the pen down or you finish typing, 00:43:01.01\00:43:03.45 you know, you got some hot. 00:43:03.48\00:43:04.98 You know, it's just like you've gotten this, 00:43:05.01\00:43:07.02 you've gone to some place, you know, 00:43:07.05\00:43:08.48 and you can't wait till Sabbath. 00:43:08.52\00:43:10.32 So during the service you have the choir singing 00:43:10.39\00:43:13.76 and they're doing announcements and you kind of rocking, 00:43:13.79\00:43:15.79 it's like get rid of this because I got something to say, 00:43:15.82\00:43:17.93 you know, kind of thing. 00:43:17.96\00:43:19.29 Does that happen in music too? 00:43:19.33\00:43:20.70 I think so. Yeah. 00:43:20.73\00:43:22.03 There for sure, there are things 00:43:22.06\00:43:23.40 that you get excited about 00:43:23.43\00:43:24.77 because you like it, you like, man. 00:43:24.80\00:43:26.13 Yeah. Doing something for you. I got to share this thing. 00:43:26.17\00:43:27.77 Right. Right. Right. Yeah. 00:43:27.80\00:43:29.14 I totally agree. Yeah. 00:43:29.17\00:43:30.61 I think so to there are things that you just, 00:43:30.67\00:43:32.81 that you just connect with. 00:43:32.84\00:43:34.31 I think that's an important part of 00:43:34.34\00:43:36.71 what helps the audience connect to 00:43:36.75\00:43:38.55 and we talked about that a while ago where 00:43:38.58\00:43:40.78 if you like it and you connect with it... 00:43:40.82\00:43:42.58 Right. 00:43:42.62\00:43:43.95 I think it makes a difference with the way, 00:43:43.99\00:43:45.32 in the way you present it and the way you share it. 00:43:45.35\00:43:47.22 You know, while we're talking little bit ago, 00:43:47.26\00:43:48.62 we got to get and plug for your wife 00:43:48.66\00:43:50.03 because you mentioned your children. 00:43:50.09\00:43:51.43 Right. But she is a doctor. 00:43:51.46\00:43:52.96 Right. Dr. Helen Powell-Stoddart. 00:43:52.99\00:43:55.50 Indeed. 00:43:55.53\00:43:56.90 And, man, she is really an amazing woman 00:43:56.93\00:43:59.80 and she is an interventional pain specialist. 00:43:59.83\00:44:03.74 But both of her parents passed away prematurely 00:44:03.81\00:44:06.57 from diet exacerbated illnesses. 00:44:06.61\00:44:08.58 Wow. 00:44:08.61\00:44:09.94 Heart disease, blood pressure, cancer. 00:44:09.98\00:44:12.88 And so she just through that develops 00:44:12.91\00:44:16.15 this real passion for wellness, diet, nutrition. 00:44:16.18\00:44:19.75 So she spends a lot of time working on great recipes 00:44:19.79\00:44:25.33 to help people to transition 00:44:25.36\00:44:26.70 toward a more plant-based diet. 00:44:26.73\00:44:28.66 And, man, she is researching everything 00:44:28.70\00:44:31.40 from weight transformation to slowing aging, 00:44:31.43\00:44:38.84 I mean, anti-aging it's all so really 00:44:38.87\00:44:40.74 and she is a pretty good cook too. 00:44:40.78\00:44:42.18 Yeah. Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:45:39.00\00:45:40.34 We got one more song "Anything," 00:45:40.37\00:45:41.70 set that up for us, John. 00:45:41.74\00:45:43.07 I recorded a record back in 2003 called 00:45:43.10\00:45:45.64 "Wings to Walk this Road". 00:45:45.67\00:45:47.04 All right. 00:45:47.08\00:45:48.41 We had to talk about that another time. 00:45:48.44\00:45:49.78 The very last song that I wrote for that record 00:45:49.81\00:45:52.01 was this song called, "Anything". 00:45:52.05\00:45:53.78 And it was one of those songs that was like taking dictation. 00:45:53.82\00:45:59.25 But it was an interesting experience 00:45:59.29\00:46:03.76 because the song sort of proclaim 00:46:03.79\00:46:08.73 something about me 00:46:08.76\00:46:11.00 that I really wouldn't at that point yet. 00:46:11.03\00:46:14.14 Oh, okay. 00:46:14.17\00:46:15.50 Or maybe still I'm not quite there, 00:46:15.54\00:46:16.87 I'm striving to get there. 00:46:16.91\00:46:18.24 So it was one of those songs that God gave me and says, 00:46:18.27\00:46:21.34 "This is the place I'm taking you." 00:46:21.38\00:46:22.94 Okay. 00:46:22.98\00:46:24.31 So I've got to sing this song "Anything", 00:46:24.35\00:46:25.91 Lord, I'll do anything for you knowing that, man, 00:46:25.95\00:46:29.48 I'm not sure if I'm quite there yet in my walk. 00:46:29.52\00:46:32.39 And so it's humbling and encouraging 00:46:32.42\00:46:36.52 all at the same time 00:46:36.56\00:46:37.89 because you sing it with the passion knowing that 00:46:37.93\00:46:39.26 God has proclaimed this over me. 00:46:39.29\00:46:40.90 So I'm gonna get there eventually. 00:46:40.93\00:46:42.50 Alrighty. 00:46:42.53\00:46:43.87 But there is a humility in singing it as well because, 00:46:43.93\00:46:45.93 you know, man, I know I'm not quite there yet. 00:46:45.97\00:46:48.77 So anything, I do anything for you. 00:46:48.80\00:46:51.81 All right.
