" 00:04:35.64\00:04:36.97 Yes, we put that in quotes. 00:04:37.01\00:04:39.41 But for the last 13 years I have been doing that. 00:04:39.44\00:04:42.84 Yeah, yeah, you've been pushing pencil 00:04:42.88\00:04:44.35 for the long time. 00:04:44.38\00:04:46.21 Yeah, yeah, yeah, even in so called retirement. 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.98 Right, right. 00:04:49.02\00:04:50.35 And because of my work in evangelism and all, 00:04:50.39\00:04:54.26 I was ordained in 1982 I believe it was. 00:04:54.29\00:04:58.53 And, so I've had a lot of different experiences, 00:04:58.56\00:05:02.63 but people have constantly asked me as a treasurer 00:05:02.66\00:05:06.70 say you're different. 00:05:06.74\00:05:08.34 And I say, well, there is a reason that I'm different. 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.61 The Lord didn't take any chance with me, 00:05:10.64\00:05:12.77 because before I became a conference treasurer, 00:05:12.81\00:05:16.88 I saw 8,000 people baptized with my very own eyes. 00:05:16.91\00:05:20.95 And when you see the power of this message, 00:05:20.98\00:05:23.62 it does make you different. 00:05:23.65\00:05:25.12 And you realize that we can never stop doing what God... 00:05:25.15\00:05:28.59 You know, what Jesus before He left called us to do. 00:05:28.62\00:05:32.03 And that is, take the special message 00:05:32.06\00:05:34.20 that we're so privileged to know 00:05:34.23\00:05:36.10 to take that message to the world. 00:05:36.13\00:05:37.93 This is an important thing for us to do. 00:05:37.97\00:05:40.50 Behind all of those facts and figures, 00:05:40.54\00:05:42.97 there are souls that are, that are coming to the Lord 00:05:43.00\00:05:46.07 and you have been on both sides dare I say of the fence. 00:05:46.11\00:05:49.14 I met you of course working with ShareHim. 00:05:49.18\00:05:52.21 How does you get connected with your best pathway? 00:05:52.25\00:05:57.15 Well, I can think my friend Dr. Dwain Mickey 00:05:57.19\00:06:00.96 for volunteering me to be involved 00:06:00.99\00:06:04.79 with Pathway to Health. 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.39 And I never realized that the time, 00:06:06.43\00:06:08.50 what I was really getting into. 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.60 But I'm like you, 00:06:10.63\00:06:11.97 I've never seen anything as exciting as what is going on 00:06:12.00\00:06:16.57 when we conduct these pathway events. 00:06:16.60\00:06:18.61 It's really a thrilling thing 00:06:18.64\00:06:21.11 to see how this connects us with people. 00:06:21.14\00:06:25.11 The difference is that people know 00:06:25.15\00:06:27.45 they have physical problems. 00:06:27.48\00:06:29.08 They may not know that they have spiritual problems, 00:06:29.12\00:06:31.19 or if they know they have spiritual problems, 00:06:31.22\00:06:33.59 they don't know where to go for the answer. 00:06:33.62\00:06:35.92 But when they know, here's a whole bunch of doctors 00:06:35.96\00:06:38.83 and nurses and people they can help me 00:06:38.86\00:06:41.30 with my physical needs, they will come. 00:06:41.33\00:06:43.70 And when they come, 00:06:43.73\00:06:45.67 it makes a tremendous difference 00:06:45.70\00:06:47.17 because they've never been treated, 00:06:47.20\00:06:48.67 the way they get treated 00:06:48.70\00:06:50.31 when they come to one of these pathway events. 00:06:50.34\00:06:52.81 I mean, they get prayed with multiples times. 00:06:52.84\00:06:55.24 They get- It's just a happy joyous occasion for them. 00:06:55.28\00:06:59.81 And so it's been thrilling to be part of it. 00:06:59.85\00:07:02.85 And so, as long as the Lord gives me strength, 00:07:02.88\00:07:05.85 I guess I will continue on to do every thing I can, 00:07:05.89\00:07:08.22 because I think it's time for us 00:07:08.26\00:07:10.73 to see this work finished for the Lord to finish His work. 00:07:10.76\00:07:14.10 So we can go home and get out of this old world 00:07:14.13\00:07:15.83 with all of its troubles. 00:07:15.86\00:07:17.20 Amen. Well, said. 00:07:17.23\00:07:18.57 You know, a number of things occurred to me. 00:07:18.60\00:07:19.93 One, the Adventist Churches had contact with cities 00:07:19.97\00:07:22.84 for many, many years. 00:07:22.87\00:07:24.21 We've not had the impact on cities that we wanted. 00:07:24.24\00:07:27.64 And if there was one thing that impacts a town, 00:07:27.68\00:07:31.28 regardless of the size, 00:07:31.31\00:07:32.65 it's your Best Pathway to Health. 00:07:32.68\00:07:34.38 Immediately, when we come to the town, 00:07:34.42\00:07:35.92 I mean media and everything else. 00:07:35.95\00:07:37.29 We're gonna talk about that too. 00:07:37.32\00:07:38.65 But there is, there's an impact level 00:07:38.69\00:07:40.36 that I don't know 00:07:40.39\00:07:41.72 if it could be had any other way. 00:07:41.76\00:07:43.69 Because, as you well said and rightly said, 00:07:43.73\00:07:45.63 everybody has a need physically 00:07:45.66\00:07:47.66 and they are usually aware of it. 00:07:47.70\00:07:49.83 But you wouldn't think that the fact 00:07:49.86\00:07:51.73 that they are prayed with so much 00:07:51.77\00:07:53.60 and treated so nicely for a secular mindset 00:07:53.64\00:07:56.91 would be that impressive. 00:07:56.94\00:07:58.27 But you've heard it almost to a man, to woman, 00:07:58.31\00:08:00.68 they prayed with me. 00:08:00.71\00:08:02.04 I got prayed for several times. I got prayed for five times. 00:08:02.08\00:08:04.41 Everybody I talked to was nice. 00:08:04.45\00:08:05.78 Everybody smiled at me. 00:08:05.81\00:08:07.35 Everybody was kind to me. 00:08:07.38\00:08:08.98 And they prayed in addition to the physical health, 00:08:09.02\00:08:12.22 to the medical health. 00:08:12.25\00:08:13.59 Somebody looked out for my soul. 00:08:13.62\00:08:15.72 And that's the thing that I think puts this program over 00:08:15.76\00:08:19.29 and above just passing out pills or doing medical stuff. 00:08:19.33\00:08:22.76 Hey, we're making Jesus available to them also 00:08:22.80\00:08:26.60 and that's a powerful thing. 00:08:26.63\00:08:27.97 Brother President, I want to get to you just for a moment. 00:08:28.00\00:08:29.87 You are the President 00:08:29.90\00:08:31.24 of the Mountain View Conference? 00:08:31.27\00:08:32.81 And that is headquartered in? 00:08:32.84\00:08:34.61 In Parkersburg, West Virginia. 00:08:34.64\00:08:36.24 You are from where? 00:08:36.28\00:08:38.08 I am from Ohio, really. 00:08:38.11\00:08:39.65 So you just moved kind of across the... 00:08:39.68\00:08:41.02 Across the river. 00:08:41.05\00:08:42.38 You get lot of relatives in West Virginia. 00:08:42.42\00:08:44.75 That's right. 00:08:44.79\00:08:46.55 Adventist home growing up? 00:08:46.59\00:08:49.12 After a while, we were originally Methodist. 00:08:49.16\00:08:52.03 And one winter we were snowed in, 00:08:52.06\00:08:55.16 couldn't go to church and so we turned the radio on 00:08:55.20\00:08:58.33 and heard a quartet singing. 00:08:58.37\00:09:00.70 And mom and dad enrolled us in a Bible course 00:09:00.74\00:09:03.67 and discovered it, it was the Voice of Prophecy 00:09:03.71\00:09:06.64 radio program back in the 50s. 00:09:06.68\00:09:09.44 And so that was our first connection 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.08 with the Adventist Church. 00:09:11.11\00:09:12.45 I see. So praise the Lord for snow. 00:09:12.48\00:09:14.02 Amen. Yes, that's right. 00:09:14.05\00:09:15.72 I love snow. 00:09:15.75\00:09:17.09 In Ohio snow in particular. That's right. 00:09:17.12\00:09:18.45 Coming from Buffalo, New York, 00:09:18.49\00:09:19.82 I know a little bit about the snow. 00:09:19.85\00:09:21.19 You know a little bit about it. That's right. 00:09:21.22\00:09:22.82 You went into ministry, when? 00:09:22.86\00:09:25.29 In 1966 is when I first began and it's been almost 50 years. 00:09:25.33\00:09:30.63 Bless your heart. Amen. 00:09:30.67\00:09:32.00 You've been the president of the conference for how long? 00:09:32.03\00:09:33.47 I have been president for about 12 years. 00:09:33.50\00:09:35.97 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:09:36.00\00:09:37.34 I've been in Mountain View Conference about 26 years. 00:09:37.37\00:09:40.94 Served there as a pastor. You spend the time. 00:09:40.98\00:09:42.31 You know West Virginia pretty well. 00:09:42.34\00:09:43.68 Yes. Indeed, indeed. 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.31 Wonderful people. Praise the Lord. 00:09:45.35\00:09:46.82 I have not been to West Virginia. 00:09:46.85\00:09:48.22 Just I have been through there to get to New York 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.59 out here to 3ABN, you got to go through West Virginia, 00:09:50.62\00:09:52.99 but I have not really been there to preach. 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.62 But it's a pretty country, 00:09:54.66\00:09:55.99 and a lot of hills and mountains 00:09:56.02\00:09:57.36 and that kind of thing. 00:09:57.39\00:09:58.73 Beautiful people, lot of mountains, 00:09:58.76\00:10:00.33 hollows, you know, places where people live 00:10:00.36\00:10:04.57 up on those hollows and mountains. 00:10:04.60\00:10:05.93 Amen and amen. 00:10:05.97\00:10:07.30 And I need to mention, we're gonna hear 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.74 from our good friend Dr. Lela Lewis 00:10:09.77\00:10:11.24 who is kind of the... 00:10:11.27\00:10:12.61 Dare we say the mover and shaker, 00:10:12.64\00:10:13.98 the straw that kind of stirred the drink in this whole thing. 00:10:14.01\00:10:17.28 Maybe the one indispensable force in this whole year. 00:10:17.31\00:10:19.88 Of course, sure. 00:10:19.91\00:10:21.65 But, Benny, you have been with this 00:10:21.68\00:10:23.82 since the very beginning. 00:10:23.85\00:10:25.25 And of course we were together in San Antonio, then Spokane. 00:10:25.29\00:10:28.72 And of course we really bite off 00:10:28.76\00:10:31.39 a lot when we went to Los Angeles. 00:10:31.43\00:10:34.00 I think we want to... 00:10:34.03\00:10:35.36 Do you want to set this video? 00:10:35.40\00:10:36.73 We will talk about the... 00:10:36.77\00:10:38.10 We'll put the, the longer video. 00:10:38.13\00:10:39.47 Just get, kind of set that video up 00:10:39.50\00:10:40.84 which gives us kind of an overview 00:10:40.87\00:10:42.20 of the Los Angeles event. 00:10:42.24\00:10:43.97 The Los Angeles event was the, the most troublesome 00:10:44.01\00:10:49.48 I guess event in many ways because we were having to deal 00:10:49.51\00:10:52.31 with a facility which is totally union controlled, 00:10:52.35\00:10:57.52 and which makes it more expensive 00:10:57.55\00:10:59.69 because our volunteers could not do many other things 00:10:59.72\00:11:01.92 And yeah, working in LA was not easy, 00:11:03.29\00:11:07.20 both in dealing with the government officials 00:11:07.23\00:11:09.90 and LA is just a large city and it's very complicated, 00:11:09.93\00:11:13.94 the very complex, the issues and the different people 00:11:13.97\00:11:17.77 that are involved. 00:11:17.81\00:11:19.14 But anyway, we did get the Los Angeles 00:11:19.17\00:11:20.91 And I asked Dr. Lee, I said, well, 00:11:22.04\00:11:24.18 is not there any other place 00:11:24.21\00:11:26.45 that would be less expensive the week ago? 00:11:26.48\00:11:28.48 But the reality is, she said, there is not anywhere else 00:11:28.52\00:11:31.39 that we could go and accomplish what needs to be done, 00:11:31.42\00:11:34.42 and we were, we had the room that we need to do this. 00:11:34.46\00:11:37.39 And so we went to the convention center. 00:11:37.43\00:11:39.73 But the, the event was thrilling 00:11:39.76\00:11:43.53 and it was exiting 00:11:43.57\00:11:45.13 because we had three of our Adventist hospitals 00:11:45.17\00:11:48.60 We had White Memorial, we had Glendale, 00:11:50.97\00:11:52.77 we had Simi Valley, 00:11:52.81\00:11:54.14 that all cooperated in various incendiary ways 00:11:55.51\00:11:58.55 with us in that event. 00:11:58.58\00:12:00.48 And so that was a unique opportunity 00:12:00.52\00:12:02.82 to be there close to this many Adventist hospitals. 00:12:02.85\00:12:05.92 So we felt that we had to do it. 00:12:05.95\00:12:07.46 And we have a video report 00:12:07.49\00:12:09.12 which will show you a little bit of what we faced there 00:12:09.16\00:12:12.43 and what was accomplished in the event. 00:12:12.46\00:12:15.20 All right, let's take a look at that video report just now. 00:12:15.23\00:12:17.63 Los Angeles, California, the second largest city 00:12:24.64\00:12:27.64 in North America and home to four million people 00:12:27.68\00:12:30.55 from all walks of life and from all parts of the world. 00:12:30.58\00:12:34.52 The city of angels is known for many things, 00:12:34.55\00:12:37.82 a booming entertainment industry, 00:12:37.85\00:12:40.06 a spectacular city center, rich cultural experiences, 00:12:40.09\00:12:45.09 world class cuisine, and nearly 300 days 00:12:45.13\00:12:48.36 of sunshine a year. 00:12:48.40\00:12:50.33 And yet, this world renowned cosmopolitan center 00:12:50.37\00:12:54.00 is very much like every city. 00:12:54.04\00:12:56.30 In its shadows live those who struggle to provide for their 00:12:56.34\00:13:00.28 families. 00:13:00.31\00:13:01.64 Those who struggle to stay well, 00:13:01.68\00:13:04.41 those who struggle to survive. 00:13:04.45\00:13:07.42 The need is well known by many local governments, 00:13:07.45\00:13:10.35 civic leaders and charitable organizations, 00:13:10.39\00:13:12.79 all working to address the challenge. 00:13:12.82\00:13:15.32 Among them, is the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:13:15.36\00:13:18.79 a community of faith committed to spreading hope and hominess 00:13:18.83\00:13:22.30 to all people. 00:13:22.33\00:13:23.67 Through humanitarian service called Your Best Pathway to 00:13:23.70\00:13:27.47 Health, 4,400 members of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:13:27.50\00:13:31.31 along with friends, family members and colleagues 00:13:31.34\00:13:34.78 organized and hosted a free mega clinic on an epic scale. 00:13:34.81\00:13:39.68 There's people needed in all facets. 00:13:39.71\00:13:42.02 There's not a person who is more important than the other, 00:13:42.05\00:13:44.92 because of the title that they hold. 00:13:44.95\00:13:46.82 What it is, it's, people coming together and working 00:13:46.86\00:13:49.42 and bringing the gifts that they already have, 00:13:49.46\00:13:51.69 or gifts that they are discovering if they are 00:13:51.73\00:13:54.30 student, or person who is seeking professional 00:13:54.33\00:13:56.83 development, they can come here learn, 00:13:56.87\00:13:58.40 they can see how it works, they can work in a community 00:13:58.43\00:14:01.10 and they could develop their gifts, 00:14:01.14\00:14:03.07 but it's not so much about, you know, the title or this, 00:14:03.10\00:14:06.24 it's more about like how we can all work together, 00:14:06.27\00:14:08.48 that's what makes Pathway so special. 00:14:08.51\00:14:10.38 Over 3,000 square feet of space at Los Angeles 00:14:10.41\00:14:14.25 Convention Center was transformed 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.65 into a mobile hospital. 00:14:16.69\00:14:18.35 Complete with triage areas, consultation rooms, 00:14:18.39\00:14:24.33 massage chairs, a full pharmacy, 00:14:24.36\00:14:28.96 vision testing centers, surgical suites, 00:14:29.00\00:14:33.64 a massive dental treatment room and more. 00:14:33.67\00:14:38.27 I had a great experience here today. 00:14:38.31\00:14:41.34 I've never been able to see so many specialists at one time 00:14:41.38\00:14:43.98 or actually ever in my life, I have never seen so many 00:14:44.01\00:14:45.65 specialists. 00:14:45.68\00:14:47.32 It's like, they dropped an Adventist kaiser in the middle 00:14:47.35\00:14:49.45 of LA. 00:14:49.48\00:14:50.89 If anybody, I was spectacle. 00:14:50.92\00:14:52.75 I really, I came to drop somebody off 00:14:52.79\00:14:55.49 in the vision area. 00:14:55.52\00:14:56.86 And then when I saw all the other stuff, I was like, 00:14:56.89\00:14:59.29 I have stuff that's been nagging on me for years. 00:14:59.33\00:15:02.43 I want to get, you know, getting care of it and wow, 00:15:02.46\00:15:05.57 it was great. 00:15:05.60\00:15:06.94 It was some, everything, everybody is so nice, 00:15:06.97\00:15:08.60 everybody is so sweet. 00:15:08.64\00:15:09.97 When you go to a normal clinic and stuff, it's not like that, 00:15:10.01\00:15:12.84 and at least my experiences aren't like that. 00:15:12.87\00:15:14.61 This has been a blessing. 00:15:14.64\00:15:16.14 Even when I first came in, the doctor prayed with me. 00:15:16.18\00:15:19.55 It's a whole way different experience 00:15:19.58\00:15:20.92 than going to regular clinic. 00:15:20.95\00:15:22.82 What motivates me to help is, 00:15:22.85\00:15:24.72 I want to do something bigger than myself. 00:15:24.75\00:15:27.16 And I'm sure that's why we're all here today. 00:15:27.19\00:15:29.52 We are inspired by doing things that are beyond us and 00:15:29.56\00:15:34.13 making impact into the world and into the community today. 00:15:34.16\00:15:38.43 Partners came together to make the mega clinic a reality. 00:15:38.47\00:15:42.74 Adventists, laymen services and industries, 00:15:42.77\00:15:46.07 together with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:15:46.11\00:15:49.38 Adventist Health through local hospitals, 00:15:49.41\00:15:51.71 including White Memorial Medical Center, 00:15:51.75\00:15:54.02 Glendale Adventist Medical Center and Simi Valley 00:15:54.05\00:15:57.59 Hospital, along with Loma Linda University Health 00:15:57.62\00:16:01.12 provided invaluable resources. 00:16:01.16\00:16:03.83 Well, notable manufactures such as GE and Konica Minolta, 00:16:03.86\00:16:09.16 among many others 00:16:09.20\00:16:10.63 donated the use of key medical equipment. 00:16:10.67\00:16:13.67 In addition, the office of Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, 00:16:13.70\00:16:18.17 along with several districts and their councilmen rallied 00:16:18.21\00:16:22.64 to support the humanitarian event, 00:16:22.68\00:16:24.15 in a continued effort to serve the residence of Los Angeles. 00:16:24.18\00:16:28.05 Once again, volunteers came from all parts of North 00:16:28.08\00:16:30.75 America and some from abroad. 00:16:30.79\00:16:33.52 Dentists, physicians, specialists, practitioners, 00:16:33.56\00:16:40.13 chaplains, nurses, dental hygienists, beauticians, 00:16:40.16\00:16:46.70 registration and hospitality workers, 00:16:46.74\00:16:49.97 communication professionals, lifestyle coaches, 00:16:50.01\00:16:54.44 and vision care specialists among many others. 00:16:54.48\00:16:58.88 They served until their feet were sore and their eyelids 00:16:58.91\00:17:02.05 were heavy, and yet neither their smiles nor their gentle 00:17:02.08\00:17:05.19 spirit ever wore off. 00:17:05.22\00:17:07.92 Meanwhile, the residence of Los Angeles and some who came 00:17:07.96\00:17:10.69 from as far as Northern Idaho and Texas, 00:17:10.73\00:17:13.70 lined up once again for services beyond their 00:17:13.73\00:17:16.00 financial reach. 00:17:16.03\00:17:17.83 Some spent the night in anticipation of doors that 00:17:17.87\00:17:21.17 would open in the morning, doors of healing, 00:17:21.20\00:17:23.17 doors of hope. 00:17:23.20\00:17:26.27 Thousands were served, thousands were loved, 00:17:26.31\00:17:29.34 @by thousands who responded to a calling, 00:17:29.38\00:17:33.25 to love like Jesus and to serve like Jesus. 00:17:33.28\00:17:37.12 By the end of the third day, 00:17:37.15\00:17:38.92 8,537 patients had received medical and dental attention 00:17:38.95\00:17:44.89 they so desperately needed, 00:17:44.93\00:17:46.83 together with friendship, encouragement, 00:17:46.86\00:17:49.83 and most importantly hope. 00:17:49.86\00:17:53.54 That is mission. That is mission accomplished. 00:17:53.57\00:17:57.67 That is mission accomplished, together. 00:17:57.71\00:18:01.64 Benny, you were there, you saw. 00:18:20.40\00:18:22.43 That was a pretty accurate depiction 00:18:22.46\00:18:23.83 of what went on in Los Angeles, 00:18:23.87\00:18:25.20 the trials and the challenges and the triumphs. 00:18:25.23\00:18:27.64 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:18:27.67\00:18:29.44 Yeah, it was a very moving thing. 00:18:29.47\00:18:32.17 It really was. 00:18:32.21\00:18:33.54 I would go out with my camera and see the lines 00:18:33.58\00:18:36.14 sneaking their way around you know, 00:18:36.18\00:18:38.05 and every year we see that dental and eye care 00:18:38.08\00:18:41.42 seem to be the longest of them all. 00:18:41.45\00:18:43.22 And there's never, never enough. 00:18:43.25\00:18:44.99 But to hear the experiences of those who were served, 00:18:45.02\00:18:49.02 I think are among the most blessed 00:18:49.06\00:18:52.99 and really it just brings you joy. 00:18:53.03\00:18:56.87 You know, to put it in a word to see how, 00:18:56.90\00:19:00.27 and then the name of Christ 00:19:00.30\00:19:01.64 and the standing of the church in a community, 00:19:01.67\00:19:04.27 all sort of packaged together. 00:19:04.31\00:19:06.74 So now we are moving on to Beckley, West Virginia. 00:19:06.78\00:19:13.25 But president, how does one and, 00:19:13.28\00:19:14.85 Benny, you can weigh on this also. 00:19:14.88\00:19:16.45 How does one go from Los Angeles, California 00:19:16.48\00:19:19.29 to Beckley, West Virginia? 00:19:19.32\00:19:21.82 That's exactly what we want to find out 00:19:21.86\00:19:24.69 in Beckley, West Virginia. 00:19:24.73\00:19:27.10 How can you do something in a small town 00:19:27.13\00:19:30.27 like you did in a big metropolitan area? 00:19:30.30\00:19:33.13 Yeah, yeah. 00:19:33.17\00:19:34.50 The question, the question has a reason. 00:19:34.54\00:19:36.84 Every time we have... 00:19:36.87\00:19:38.61 I remember after San Antonio, when we met with people 00:19:38.64\00:19:41.74 on that Sunday morning after the event was over 00:19:41.78\00:19:44.45 and the people were saying, 00:19:44.48\00:19:45.81 but how can we do this in our smaller city? 00:19:45.85\00:19:48.78 And the people in the North American Division 00:19:48.82\00:19:51.75 who said, 00:19:51.79\00:19:53.12 how can we do this in these other cities? 00:19:53.15\00:19:54.82 You know, we do need to do the large metropolitan areas, 00:19:54.86\00:19:58.73 but we also need to do it in many other areas. 00:19:58.76\00:20:01.40 And so the question has been, 00:20:01.43\00:20:03.87 how can we best help people with the knowledge 00:20:03.90\00:20:06.50 that we have to be able to do it? 00:20:06.53\00:20:08.77 And we really felt that we should 00:20:08.80\00:20:11.01 probably actually conduct 00:20:11.04\00:20:12.81 one of the smaller city events ourselves, 00:20:12.84\00:20:15.44 so that if there are different issues involved 00:20:15.48\00:20:18.55 than we face in the major cities, 00:20:18.58\00:20:20.28 that we will know what they are, 00:20:20.32\00:20:22.45 and then we can train ambassadors 00:20:22.48\00:20:24.49 who have been with us through the major events 00:20:24.52\00:20:27.72 and who have advantage of the training, 00:20:27.76\00:20:30.33 that they can go and help in the smaller cities 00:20:30.36\00:20:32.99 to be able to conduct these events. 00:20:33.03\00:20:34.73 So we went to Beckley, but the reason for Beckley, 00:20:34.76\00:20:37.90 why Beckley? 00:20:37.93\00:20:39.27 Is because the acceptant in Sabbath school 00:20:39.30\00:20:41.34 which is a large Sabbath school class 00:20:41.37\00:20:43.57 that has approximately 100 members 00:20:43.61\00:20:45.77 in the Collegedale Church 00:20:45.81\00:20:47.14 there at Southern Adventist University. 00:20:47.18\00:20:49.44 We have always raised a lot of money 00:20:49.48\00:20:51.75 for mission programs and mission 00:20:51.78\00:20:53.95 for other people to do work. 00:20:53.98\00:20:56.52 The head of our mission committee said, 00:20:56.55\00:20:58.39 I want us to get involved in doing things ourselves. 00:20:58.42\00:21:01.82 So three years ago, we went to Kodiak, Alaska, 00:21:01.86\00:21:04.39 and there we did a vacation Bible school, 00:21:04.43\00:21:06.70 we did a health cooking school, 00:21:06.73\00:21:09.43 and a health seminar and an evangelistic series. 00:21:09.46\00:21:12.97 But the problem with Kodiak is it's so far from Collegedale 00:21:13.00\00:21:17.57 and so expensive to get there 00:21:17.61\00:21:19.04 that we haven't been able to continue the work, 00:21:19.07\00:21:22.14 basically it was a one-three week trip 00:21:22.18\00:21:23.95 and it was over. 00:21:23.98\00:21:25.31 So we wanted to pick some place closer to home 00:21:25.35\00:21:29.12 where we could have a continued presence 00:21:29.15\00:21:31.72 from our Sabbath school with this, 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.82 with this church. 00:21:33.86\00:21:35.19 And see what we could do 00:21:35.22\00:21:36.56 to strengthen a church that's weak, 00:21:36.59\00:21:38.69 a church that has challenges and that might give up 00:21:38.73\00:21:43.30 without some help from outside. 00:21:43.33\00:21:45.33 And so our Sabbath school class picked Beckley 00:21:45.37\00:21:48.34 and since our Sabbath school class picked Beckley, 00:21:48.37\00:21:51.34 I said, well, we're looking for a small city 00:21:51.37\00:21:53.31 to do something in, why not Beckley? 00:21:53.34\00:21:56.14 And so Beckley was chosen 00:21:56.18\00:21:59.75 and in spite of the many challenges 00:21:59.78\00:22:02.72 that we faced, and we have definitely learned things 00:22:02.75\00:22:05.15 that we didn't know before 00:22:05.19\00:22:07.52 in dealing with the state government 00:22:07.56\00:22:10.69 and dealing with the smaller city. 00:22:10.73\00:22:13.29 We've already learned a lot of things 00:22:13.33\00:22:15.60 that will help us as we go forward. 00:22:15.63\00:22:17.87 But that's, that's why Beckley was chosen was, 00:22:17.90\00:22:21.74 so that we would have experience 00:22:21.77\00:22:23.27 in doing one of these. 00:22:23.30\00:22:24.91 And then there's a real danger with these sayings. 00:22:24.94\00:22:29.24 Is there's a lot of liability possibilities 00:22:29.28\00:22:33.08 with conducting this type of event? 00:22:33.11\00:22:34.95 We want to may, we want to protect the church. 00:22:34.98\00:22:36.35 We want to make sure 00:22:36.38\00:22:37.72 that the people who conduct these events 00:22:37.75\00:22:39.75 in their smaller cities know what they are doing 00:22:39.79\00:22:42.52 and know how to protect both themselves and the church. 00:22:42.56\00:22:45.09 Okay, so you are among other things, 00:22:45.13\00:22:47.60 establishing a template for activity in smaller towns? 00:22:47.63\00:22:51.10 Yes. Okay. 00:22:51.13\00:22:52.63 And so from, you're saying so, this Sabbath school class- 00:22:52.67\00:22:55.87 You remember that Sabbath school class from Collegedale, 00:22:55.90\00:22:59.07 engine on, to Beckley, engine off. 00:22:59.11\00:23:01.48 How far are we talking in terms of miles? 00:23:01.51\00:23:03.45 It's about 300 and some odd miles, 00:23:03.48\00:23:06.85 it's five hours, five hours of freeway driving. 00:23:06.88\00:23:09.12 Oh, okay. 00:23:09.15\00:23:10.49 Luckily, Larry chose the place that we can get through here. 00:23:10.52\00:23:12.85 Absolutely. 00:23:12.89\00:23:14.52 And unique thing about it is, this is a people group 00:23:14.56\00:23:17.63 right under the shadows of the General Conference 00:23:17.66\00:23:20.73 called Appalachia. 00:23:20.76\00:23:22.10 We're the only conference that's totally Appalachia. 00:23:22.13\00:23:25.40 And so it's going to be 00:23:25.43\00:23:27.20 a very unique task and experiment. 00:23:27.24\00:23:30.41 Give us some flavor before we go to Dr. Lela 00:23:30.44\00:23:33.78 of the people of the town, the size of the town. 00:23:33.81\00:23:36.18 Benny was telling me you're drawing from the, 00:23:36.21\00:23:38.51 not only the town of Beckley, 00:23:38.55\00:23:39.88 but there's counties around or towns around it. 00:23:39.91\00:23:41.68 But give us just some flavor of that area of West Virginia? 00:23:41.72\00:23:45.22 We suspect there will be about nine counties 00:23:45.25\00:23:48.02 that will be involved. 00:23:48.06\00:23:49.42 And you don't have to read the newspaper too long 00:23:49.46\00:23:53.43 to find out that West Virginia is very unhealthy. 00:23:53.46\00:23:57.37 And so, we have a great need to help folks 00:23:57.40\00:24:02.87 in the area of healthcare. 00:24:02.90\00:24:06.11 And so, there's probably 20,000 maybe in the area. 00:24:06.14\00:24:11.91 Okay. 00:24:11.95\00:24:13.28 And again, it's people who live in the mountains 00:24:13.31\00:24:17.49 and live up the hollows 00:24:17.52\00:24:19.32 and Beckley is the crossroads of Southern West Virginia. 00:24:19.35\00:24:24.33 And so we feel that this will be 00:24:24.36\00:24:27.00 a wonderful experiment test. 00:24:27.03\00:24:30.73 And it will be an area that needs the help. 00:24:30.77\00:24:34.77 Now Beckley itself is how big of a town? 00:24:34.80\00:24:38.81 It's probably 15,000. 00:24:38.84\00:24:41.98 Decent size. Yeah. 00:24:42.01\00:24:45.08 Small town. 00:24:45.11\00:24:46.45 And it's the junction of I-64 and I-77. 00:24:46.48\00:24:51.42 So you have two freeways coming together at Beckley. 00:24:51.45\00:24:54.52 So people can get there. Right, yeah. 00:24:54.56\00:24:56.59 So you can get there from Virginia 00:24:56.62\00:24:58.53 or you can get there from Tennessee 00:24:58.56\00:25:00.43 or Virginia, yeah. 00:25:00.46\00:25:01.83 Yeah, yeah. 00:25:01.86\00:25:03.20 Where in the town 00:25:03.23\00:25:04.57 are you going to be holding the event? 00:25:04.60\00:25:06.40 The town has a medium size convention center 00:25:06.43\00:25:11.21 and it has been reserved and given to this project. 00:25:11.24\00:25:15.18 It's when I found out with Pathway, 00:25:15.21\00:25:17.35 whatever size venue they get, they fill it. 00:25:17.38\00:25:22.28 Be it smaller or be it large because I didn't think 00:25:22.32\00:25:25.09 that LA Convention was somewhere 00:25:25.12\00:25:26.59 between 300,000 and 400,000 and we fill that too. 00:25:26.62\00:25:29.02 So as much room as you can get, 00:25:29.06\00:25:30.39 we can find some place to put somebody to do some services 00:25:30.43\00:25:33.29 for the Lord. 00:25:33.33\00:25:34.66 Now, here's the thing 00:25:34.70\00:25:36.03 and really why you are here, gentlemen, 00:25:36.06\00:25:37.40 the fact that we need some help. 00:25:37.43\00:25:38.77 We do. 00:25:38.80\00:25:40.14 There are some volunteers 00:25:40.17\00:25:41.50 and here's why we're gonna call Dr. Lela 00:25:41.54\00:25:43.04 to sort of join us here because, I think, Benny, 00:25:43.07\00:25:45.61 she has the list of those kinds of services 00:25:45.64\00:25:49.01 or between she and you have the list of the kinds of... 00:25:49.04\00:25:52.95 And of course, we need some technical people. 00:25:52.98\00:25:55.85 And, of course, you're gonna hear that in a moment. 00:25:55.88\00:25:57.99 But you need, we need all hands on deck folk too, 00:25:58.02\00:26:00.06 just strong backs and loving hearts 00:26:00.09\00:26:02.42 are always needed because there's a lot of stuff 00:26:02.46\00:26:04.39 that needs to be carried or moved or pushed. 00:26:04.43\00:26:06.33 People who know how to smile and be kind 00:26:06.36\00:26:08.23 and show the love of Christ, that is a gift of God 00:26:08.26\00:26:11.83 that can be used in any aspect of service for the Lord. 00:26:11.87\00:26:15.04 But, Dr. Lela, are you with us? 00:26:15.07\00:26:16.77 I'm here, sir. 00:26:16.81\00:26:18.14 Hello, good, doctor, good to see you. 00:26:18.17\00:26:19.97 Good to see you too. Yeah. 00:26:20.01\00:26:21.78 We had little trouble trying to catch up 00:26:21.81\00:26:23.35 with the good doctor. 00:26:23.38\00:26:24.71 And when once we got her, had some trouble connecting 00:26:24.75\00:26:26.78 but you're looking good, my doctor. 00:26:26.82\00:26:29.38 And we know you're working hard. 00:26:29.42\00:26:31.89 And thank you for allowing the Lord to use you to do this. 00:26:31.92\00:26:36.42 You know, God always lays hands on somebody. 00:26:36.46\00:26:38.79 There was an Ellen White. 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.16 There was, you know, there was always somebody that has to, 00:26:40.20\00:26:42.70 it has to flow through. 00:26:42.73\00:26:44.07 We have a Danny Shelton here at 3ABN. 00:26:44.10\00:26:45.83 And like it or not, the mantle has fallen on your shoulders 00:26:45.87\00:26:48.67 and we thank you for carrying that mantle. 00:26:48.70\00:26:50.64 So now, we need some help with Beckley, West Virginia. 00:26:50.67\00:26:54.01 I like that Beckley, West Virginia. 00:26:54.04\00:26:55.88 We need some help with Beckley, West Virginia. 00:26:55.91\00:26:57.78 You have a list, do you not, 00:26:57.81\00:26:59.15 of some of the kinds of practitioners 00:26:59.18\00:27:00.85 that we need? 00:27:00.88\00:27:02.22 Oh yes, I do. 00:27:02.25\00:27:03.59 And, CA, just like you said, we need everybody. 00:27:03.62\00:27:06.29 And if you can smile and you have a heartbeat, 00:27:06.32\00:27:09.12 you can be used by God. 00:27:09.16\00:27:10.53 Amen! Amen. 00:27:10.56\00:27:12.83 If you are ambulatory you can smile. 00:27:12.86\00:27:15.00 We want you. Yeah. 00:27:15.03\00:27:16.73 And, you know, some people come in wheelchairs. 00:27:16.77\00:27:19.33 Some of our volunteers came to San Antonio in wheelchairs 00:27:19.37\00:27:22.57 and God used them. 00:27:22.60\00:27:23.94 Praise God. 00:27:23.97\00:27:25.31 So if we can breathe and smile and have a heartbeat, 00:27:25.34\00:27:28.71 I think that God will use us. 00:27:28.74\00:27:30.25 Yeah, you know, I'll tell you quick story. 00:27:30.28\00:27:31.61 I met somebody in Los Angeles, 00:27:31.65\00:27:33.08 who I pastored 1979. 00:27:33.11\00:27:37.75 And his wife was a teacher at a university, he's retired. 00:27:37.79\00:27:41.29 And so we saved them some money, 00:27:41.32\00:27:42.66 and now we're gonna spend it for Jesus. 00:27:42.69\00:27:44.89 So they're gonna follow you around 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.83 and they've got nothing to do, 00:27:46.86\00:27:48.20 they got a little time, they got a little money, 00:27:48.23\00:27:49.56 kids are out of the house 00:27:49.60\00:27:50.93 and he served the Lord for many years 00:27:50.97\00:27:52.30 and he says, "We like doing this. " 00:27:52.33\00:27:53.67 So they're just running around and she was a teacher at school 00:27:53.70\00:27:56.07 and he was a hard working fellow. 00:27:56.10\00:27:57.84 They don't have any particular medical skills, 00:27:57.87\00:28:00.08 they just have a loving heart and a warm smile. 00:28:00.11\00:28:02.14 And they said, well, we like to do what we can. 00:28:02.18\00:28:04.31 So I know those kinds of people are needed also. 00:28:04.35\00:28:06.31 Amen. Yeah. 00:33:34.08\00:33:35.74 And I believe what Dr. Lewis has said, 00:33:35.78\00:33:39.35 is this is why the state officials 00:33:39.38\00:33:42.92 are so excited just because 00:33:42.95\00:33:44.75 they recognized this need is going to fulfill 00:33:44.79\00:33:48.62 needs of their people. 00:33:48.66\00:33:50.43 And so, Benny, and I'm gonna- We want to go to this 00:33:50.46\00:33:52.39 other piece of video in just a moment. 00:33:52.43\00:33:54.86 But, I suspect given this- I mean, 00:33:54.90\00:33:57.30 because Los Angeles is the big secular town, 00:33:57.33\00:34:00.04 but medical stuff is available. 00:34:00.07\00:34:01.64 It's a very sophisticated town and there are poor everywhere. 00:34:01.67\00:34:04.61 But here it's a very special kind of need. 00:34:04.64\00:34:06.64 We ought to be able to make deep impact in this community, 00:34:06.68\00:34:08.88 wouldn't you think? 00:34:08.91\00:34:10.25 Yeah, absolutely. Yeah. 00:34:10.28\00:34:12.05 I don't think there's any question 00:34:12.08\00:34:14.12 that the needs are. 00:34:14.15\00:34:15.48 And the things that are available to them 00:34:15.52\00:34:17.35 are certainly not anything 00:34:17.39\00:34:18.72 like what would be available in Los Angeles. 00:34:18.75\00:34:20.46 In Los Angeles. 00:34:20.49\00:34:21.82 We have an interesting thing that happens 00:34:21.86\00:34:23.22 when we go to these areas. 00:34:23.26\00:34:24.89 It seems like the two weeks before the event, 00:34:24.93\00:34:27.10 we have a hard time getting the attention of the media. 00:34:27.13\00:34:31.20 But once the event starts, 00:34:31.23\00:34:33.00 all of a sudden they're all there, 00:34:33.03\00:34:35.47 Costin Jordache, our Communication VP told me 00:34:35.50\00:34:39.01 that, on the morning that we opened in LA, that 45, 00:34:39.04\00:34:44.21 all of the television stations I think and radio stations 00:34:44.25\00:34:47.25 and all were lined up at there one right after the other, 00:34:47.28\00:34:50.25 trying to come in and to get footage 00:34:50.29\00:34:52.12 and all of what was going on there. 00:34:52.15\00:34:53.92 One of the exciting things that happened there 00:34:53.96\00:34:56.02 was that CBS did a coverage of our event 00:34:56.06\00:35:00.43 on the evening news. 00:35:00.46\00:35:02.83 So, and I think we have that and maybe we can show them, 00:35:02.86\00:35:05.47 but they felt that what was happening there 00:35:05.50\00:35:07.70 was definitely news worthy. 00:35:07.74\00:35:09.07 Yeah, this is a very fine piece. 00:35:09.10\00:35:11.17 Let's take a look at that just now. 00:35:11.21\00:35:13.21 A charity called Your Best Pathway to Health 00:35:13.24\00:35:16.78 offered free medical care to all comers in Los Angeles. 00:35:16.81\00:35:20.75 Look at the reaction with Carter Evans. 00:35:20.78\00:35:23.82 They lined up by the thousands for a chance to see a doctor, 00:35:23.85\00:35:27.09 dentist, or optometrist, all medical volunteers 00:35:27.12\00:35:30.63 offering their services for free. 00:35:30.66\00:35:33.13 DKNHR. 00:35:33.16\00:35:35.06 Maddy Negrete has put off getting glasses for years. 00:35:35.10\00:35:38.37 Even though she has health insurance, 00:35:38.40\00:35:40.07 it only pays for an exam not corrective lenses. 00:35:40.10\00:35:43.81 What am I supposed to do with the prescription like, 00:35:43.84\00:35:45.64 it's no good to me without the glasses. 00:35:45.67\00:35:48.94 Here, she paid nothing. Are you comfortable? 00:35:48.98\00:35:51.71 Jessie Agbunat has been putting off surgery 00:35:51.75\00:35:54.38 to remove a benign growth on her shoulder for five years. 00:35:54.42\00:35:58.12 You're gonna feel that injection now, okay? 00:35:58.15\00:36:00.46 Dr. Chris Lewis removed it in 20 minutes 00:36:00.49\00:36:02.82 in a makeshift operating room on the floor 00:36:02.86\00:36:05.13 of the Los Angeles Convention Center. 00:36:05.16\00:36:07.33 Agbunat says her state subsidized insurance plan 00:36:07.36\00:36:10.07 comes with high deductibles and copays. 00:36:10.10\00:36:12.13 Would it have been hundreds or thousands? 00:36:12.17\00:36:14.14 Thousands. Yeah, it's thousands. 00:36:14.17\00:36:16.77 I expected to see a lot more homeless people 00:36:16.81\00:36:18.84 and people with no insurance at all. 00:36:18.87\00:36:20.61 And to find out that it was the majority had insurance, 00:36:20.64\00:36:23.51 but couldn't afford their co-payment or deductible, 00:36:23.55\00:36:26.11 that was surprising. 00:36:26.15\00:36:27.48 Mandy Negrete isn't surprised at all. 00:36:27.52\00:36:29.58 She's had more failures than successes 00:36:29.62\00:36:31.85 with her insurance. 00:36:31.89\00:36:33.22 She's currently facing $18,000 in unexpected medical bills 00:36:33.25\00:36:36.62 from the birth of her son what she thought was covered. 00:36:36.66\00:36:39.39 How does that make you feel about going to the hospital, 00:36:39.43\00:36:42.00 the next time you need medical care? 00:36:42.03\00:36:43.37 I don't want to go to the hospital. 00:36:43.40\00:36:44.73 I don't... 00:36:44.77\00:36:46.10 I'm really apprehensive about going to anywhere 00:36:46.13\00:36:48.97 unless it's a dire emergency. 00:36:49.00\00:36:51.94 The dentists and hygienists you see here 00:36:51.97\00:36:54.11 are just some of 4,300 volunteers 00:36:54.14\00:36:56.54 who make this clinic possible. 00:36:56.58\00:36:58.95 Its two and a half days, 00:36:58.98\00:37:00.32 they expect to treat 10,000 patients 00:37:00.35\00:37:02.52 and give away 30 million dollars 00:37:02.55\00:37:04.85 in medical services. 00:37:04.89\00:37:06.22 But, Scott, it's just a temporary solution 00:37:06.25\00:37:08.59 to a much bigger problem. 00:37:08.62\00:37:09.99 Most generous country on earth, Carter Evans, 00:37:10.03\00:37:12.43 thanks so much. 00:37:12.46\00:37:14.10 So I remember the very first day, 00:37:14.13\00:37:16.06 I took my camera outside 00:37:16.10\00:37:17.43 and you could see the news trucks 00:37:17.47\00:37:18.90 lined up one behind the other. 00:37:18.93\00:37:20.54 One of the challenges, Benny, that I found in talking 00:37:20.57\00:37:23.47 with the media people in a city as large as Los Angeles 00:37:23.51\00:37:26.41 was getting the word out, 00:37:26.44\00:37:27.81 because the night before I had to go to a Best Buy 00:37:27.84\00:37:30.41 and I was talking with the people there 00:37:30.45\00:37:31.78 and they didn't know, you know, they didn't know. 00:37:31.81\00:37:33.72 You know, when you get a big sprawling town like that 00:37:33.75\00:37:35.75 with so much happening, 00:37:35.78\00:37:37.12 baseball and other kinds of sports 00:37:37.15\00:37:38.49 and trying to get the word out. 00:37:38.52\00:37:39.85 So there was some who did know. 00:37:39.89\00:37:41.22 What are we doing in Beckley and its environs 00:37:41.26\00:37:43.63 to try to get the word to, you know, to that area? 00:37:43.66\00:37:46.39 Well, for one thing, we have 35,000 brochures 00:37:46.43\00:37:49.90 that are gonna be handed out, 00:37:49.93\00:37:51.70 hand delivered to the people in that area. 00:37:51.73\00:37:55.70 ASI is sending this year the Youth for Jesus program 00:37:55.74\00:38:00.44 of 46 young people that will be coming on July the 3rd, 00:38:00.48\00:38:05.05 just in a few days, 00:38:05.08\00:38:06.41 they will be coming to West Virginia. 00:38:06.45\00:38:08.08 Now correct, you said 46 young people, 46... 00:38:08.12\00:38:10.35 46 young people, right. 00:38:10.39\00:38:12.42 We have nine mega book salesmen 00:38:12.45\00:38:14.32 that are there right now with the semi-loaded books. 00:38:14.36\00:38:17.99 Also they're finding a very receptive situation 00:38:18.03\00:38:22.66 in West Virginia as they go, they're finding many people. 00:38:22.70\00:38:27.00 About 65 percent of the people 00:38:27.04\00:38:30.37 that they have visited are saying, 00:38:30.41\00:38:32.21 we would like to study the Bible in our homes 00:38:32.24\00:38:34.58 with some one. 00:38:34.61\00:38:35.94 So I think there's a real need. 00:38:35.98\00:38:37.85 People are realizing that this world, 00:38:37.88\00:38:40.35 everything is so uncertain. 00:38:40.38\00:38:41.72 We never know 00:38:41.75\00:38:43.08 what's gonna happen any morning. 00:38:43.12\00:38:44.45 When we wake up, what kind what kind of shocking news 00:38:44.49\00:38:45.89 are we gonna get today? 00:38:45.92\00:38:47.26 Very true. 00:38:47.29\00:38:48.62 And it's coming very close to home 00:38:48.66\00:38:49.99 for people who thought it would far, far away. 00:38:50.03\00:38:51.59 So I think people are realizing that they need to know, 00:38:51.63\00:38:54.46 they need Jesus. 00:38:54.50\00:38:55.83 They need to know more about Jesus. 00:38:55.86\00:38:57.40 They need to know what Jesus has told us 00:38:57.43\00:38:59.37 about the end times on this world. 00:38:59.40\00:39:01.64 And we have that knowledge and can share. 00:39:01.67\00:39:04.27 And specially as people see 00:39:04.31\00:39:06.91 the love that is shown to people 00:39:06.94\00:39:09.54 through dealing with their health challenges. 00:39:09.58\00:39:13.55 Many of them say, we want to, 00:39:13.58\00:39:15.22 we want to join you and do this. 00:39:15.25\00:39:16.85 We want to help you do this 00:39:16.89\00:39:18.75 because we have never seen anyone doing the kind of things 00:39:18.79\00:39:21.52 that you're doing and we like to be part of it. 00:39:21.56\00:39:23.93 Now, Dr. Lela, are you still there? 00:39:23.96\00:39:26.39 I'm here. 00:39:26.43\00:39:27.93 One of the things that I thought 00:39:27.96\00:39:29.30 was really ingenious about all of the previous, 00:39:29.33\00:39:32.73 your best Pathway to Health was the ongoing idea. 00:39:32.77\00:39:36.37 The idea that this is not kind of a guerrilla evangelism 00:39:36.40\00:39:38.91 kind of a thing. 00:39:38.94\00:39:40.28 We show up and just fire a few rounds 00:39:40.31\00:39:42.24 and then just disappear. 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.61 But the fact that, that was built into the system, 00:39:43.65\00:39:46.48 this idea of going back for continual care 00:39:46.51\00:39:50.39 or getting your glasses or getting your reports 00:39:50.42\00:39:52.52 at the local churches. 00:39:52.55\00:39:53.89 So there is this feed in to the local churches 00:39:53.92\00:39:56.22 which I thought was a very good thing 00:39:56.26\00:39:58.29 because it got people into the building 00:39:58.33\00:40:00.30 to see that Adventists are real people to touch them, 00:40:00.33\00:40:02.60 to handle them, to know 00:40:02.63\00:40:03.97 that these services are ongoing. 00:40:04.00\00:40:06.00 Is that component part of the Beckley experience also? 00:40:06.03\00:40:09.84 Absolutely. 00:40:09.87\00:40:11.21 We called it the Health Information Centers 00:40:11.24\00:40:13.84 and that's where patients will continue 00:40:13.88\00:40:16.44 to pick up their lab results, 00:40:16.48\00:40:19.28 their Pap smear results, their path reports 00:40:19.31\00:40:21.75 and then they will be offered further training, 00:40:21.78\00:40:24.12 whether that be lifestyle medicine, cooking schools, 00:40:24.15\00:40:27.99 diabetes schools etcetera. 00:40:28.02\00:40:30.13 So, yes, we're definitely doing that. 00:40:30.16\00:40:32.03 That is fabulous. 00:40:32.06\00:40:33.40 I really think that is a great idea. 00:40:33.43\00:40:36.16 Pastor, what is the kind of response 00:40:36.20\00:40:38.37 you're getting from your local churches, 00:40:38.40\00:40:40.00 your local pastors? 00:40:40.04\00:40:41.37 Are they buying into it, are they excited about it? 00:40:41.40\00:40:43.47 Oh, it's, it's beyond excitement. 00:40:43.51\00:40:45.77 We just finished up our camp meeting 00:40:45.81\00:40:48.01 and we had over a 100 volunteers signed up, 00:40:48.04\00:40:51.28 up at camp meeting. 00:40:51.31\00:40:52.65 Excellent. 00:40:52.68\00:40:54.02 And they also pledged the financial support 00:40:54.05\00:40:57.55 for this program. 00:40:57.59\00:40:59.39 And so, yes, it's very exciting. 00:40:59.42\00:41:01.62 Our pastors will be there and we have many doctors 00:41:01.66\00:41:07.23 who will be there. 00:41:07.26\00:41:08.60 So, yes, we're on board. Praise the Lord. 00:41:08.63\00:41:13.10 And it's the first event like this on the East Coast. 00:41:13.13\00:41:16.74 And we are so humbled to have it come 00:41:16.77\00:41:19.97 to the Mountain View Conference and into Beckley. 00:41:20.01\00:41:22.61 Yeah, you mentioned that during the break. 00:41:22.64\00:41:24.15 That is, this is the first time 00:41:24.18\00:41:25.55 we sort of swung the pendulum east. 00:41:25.58\00:41:27.55 Everything has been either San Antonio 00:41:27.58\00:41:29.08 or the West Coast. 00:41:29.12\00:41:30.45 Or the West Coast, yeah. 00:41:30.49\00:41:31.82 Benny, have you been on the ground in Beckley yet? 00:41:31.85\00:41:33.92 Many times, I've been there... 00:41:33.96\00:41:36.09 In the last two weeks I've been there, 00:41:36.12\00:41:39.19 been through town four times I think. 00:41:39.23\00:41:41.56 And I've been to the convention center 00:41:41.60\00:41:43.90 and all of this, you can guess. 00:41:43.93\00:41:46.70 I just might add that our pastor 00:41:46.74\00:41:49.44 and lay people there 00:41:49.47\00:41:50.97 have gone into the convention center 00:41:51.01\00:41:52.74 and painted and spruced it up. 00:41:52.77\00:41:55.61 And do you know that made an impact 00:41:55.64\00:41:57.61 upon the folks there at the convention center. 00:41:57.65\00:42:00.18 And they are all excited about 00:42:00.22\00:42:02.25 Pathway is coming in to the convention centre. 00:42:02.28\00:42:05.69 Dr. Lela, you mentioned that this particular event 00:42:05.72\00:42:09.02 seems to be reaching a little higher up the political ladder 00:42:09.06\00:42:12.49 than some of the previous events. 00:42:12.53\00:42:14.66 Is there any thing particular about this 00:42:14.70\00:42:18.03 particular initiative in Beckley 00:42:18.07\00:42:19.83 that has stood out in your mind thus far? 00:42:19.87\00:42:22.74 Well, yes, actually. 00:42:22.77\00:42:24.94 You know, one thing that I think of it's so exciting, 00:42:24.97\00:42:27.71 is not only are the politicians, 00:42:27.74\00:42:29.98 very, very excited about it. 00:42:30.01\00:42:31.35 You know, it's actually election time. 00:42:31.38\00:42:34.42 So everybody is very interested 00:42:34.45\00:42:36.75 to make sure that we're reaching 00:42:36.79\00:42:39.09 to the best of our ability, 00:42:39.12\00:42:40.96 the healthcare needs of the community. 00:42:40.99\00:42:42.69 As Elder Boggess already mentioned, 00:42:42.72\00:42:44.39 you know, Appalachia, particularly. 00:42:44.43\00:42:45.99 West Virginia has a great need in that area. 00:42:46.03\00:42:49.03 So for the politicians, 00:42:49.06\00:42:50.57 this is something of great interest 00:42:50.60\00:42:52.00 and here comes Pathway to Health offering 00:42:52.03\00:42:54.47 the very services that they desperately need. 00:42:54.50\00:42:56.91 And we are definitely seeing, 00:42:56.94\00:42:58.47 you know, the boards actually reaching out to us, 00:42:58.51\00:43:01.54 instead of us having to reach out to them, 00:43:01.58\00:43:03.31 we've actually had phone calls 00:43:03.35\00:43:04.85 from the various specialty wards 00:43:04.88\00:43:06.48 reaching out to us, telling us, 00:43:06.51\00:43:08.02 they're gonna do anything and everything 00:43:08.05\00:43:09.45 they possibly can to help, which is unprecedented. 00:43:09.48\00:43:12.55 But just to give an example of the interest 00:43:12.59\00:43:15.52 that Pathway to Health is not just 00:43:15.56\00:43:17.23 from the government officials etcetera, 00:43:17.26\00:43:19.79 but even from people not necessarily connected 00:43:19.83\00:43:22.46 with our faith directly. 00:43:22.50\00:43:24.67 There is one of our respiratory therapist 00:43:24.70\00:43:27.14 who is volunteering. 00:43:27.17\00:43:28.50 One of his students in Los Angeles 00:43:28.54\00:43:30.21 volunteered in LA. 00:43:30.24\00:43:32.01 And he came back to work, 00:43:32.04\00:43:33.38 the student did and told the boss. 00:43:33.41\00:43:35.08 Hey, this was such an amazing event. 00:43:35.11\00:43:36.98 I just can't believe what a wonderful thing it was. 00:43:37.01\00:43:39.75 The teacher, the respiratory therapy teacher 00:43:39.78\00:43:42.52 who is not a member of our faith 00:43:42.55\00:43:44.69 actually is flying all the way from Los Angeles 00:43:44.72\00:43:47.89 to come to Beckley, West Virginia, 00:43:47.92\00:43:49.39 to run the respiratory therapy department 00:43:49.42\00:43:52.09 because he was so touched by what his student 00:43:52.13\00:43:54.80 from a different faith found in Pathway to Health. 00:43:54.83\00:43:57.67 So we we're seeing that have a profound effect, 00:43:57.70\00:44:00.50 again a continued profound effect 00:44:00.54\00:44:02.37 not just on city government officials, 00:44:02.40\00:44:04.94 but on people, individual volunteers as well. 00:44:04.97\00:44:07.88 Amen. 00:44:07.91\00:44:09.24 You know, I know you tend to see these things 00:44:09.28\00:44:11.01 in terms of human interest stories. 00:44:11.05\00:44:12.51 So I knew you would have a story for me. 00:44:12.58\00:44:13.92 When I ask the question, 00:44:13.95\00:44:15.28 I knew there was gonna be an answer, 00:44:15.32\00:44:16.69 because you tend to conceptualize things 00:44:16.72\00:44:18.55 in terms of how they impact individuals 00:44:18.59\00:44:20.42 and how individuals are impacted. 00:44:20.46\00:44:21.79 So thank you so very much. That's great. 00:44:21.82\00:44:23.83 Benny, in dealing with San Antonio 00:44:23.86\00:44:26.19 and Los Angeles and Spokane and Oakland and San Francisco, 00:44:26.23\00:44:30.10 different flavor in West Virginia, small town, 00:44:30.13\00:44:33.77 different flavor? 00:44:33.80\00:44:35.27 Yeah, it's different. 00:44:35.30\00:44:36.71 But I think, lot of the difference 00:44:36.74\00:44:38.47 is coming from the fact that we are back east. 00:44:38.51\00:44:41.64 And it's also that we are doing this in mid July, 00:44:41.68\00:44:44.55 which I'm finding people are having family reunions, 00:44:44.58\00:44:47.55 that they have only once every 12 years or something. 00:44:47.58\00:44:50.62 And I can't go or I'm doing continuing aid in order. 00:44:50.65\00:44:53.66 Some retired dentists are saying, 00:44:53.69\00:44:55.12 well, we're doing continue aid to keep our license active. 00:44:55.16\00:44:58.29 And, yeah, it's just weddings, family reunions 00:44:58.33\00:45:03.83 and there's a lot of things 00:45:03.87\00:45:05.20 that we're dealing with summer time. 00:45:05.23\00:45:07.30 But the thing is, I mean, the legislature 00:45:07.34\00:45:10.01 actually wrote a law on June the 8th, 00:45:10.04\00:45:12.67 which allows our physicians to be able to come 00:45:12.71\00:45:16.24 without having to even contact the boards 00:45:16.28\00:45:18.55 as long as they bring their license with them. 00:45:18.58\00:45:20.85 If they are working with a non profit organization 00:45:20.88\00:45:23.15 and it's seven days or less, 00:45:23.18\00:45:24.62 all they have to do is show up 00:45:24.65\00:45:26.05 and have their license in their hand. 00:45:26.09\00:45:28.02 So that's a major concession, isn't it? 00:45:28.06\00:45:29.99 Yeah, that's a major concession. 00:45:30.03\00:45:31.43 We applaud the state governors, 00:45:31.46\00:45:33.13 the state governor and officials 00:45:33.16\00:45:34.80 for doing that. 00:45:34.83\00:45:36.16 I mean, that's just unheard of, 00:45:36.20\00:45:37.93 to change the law for this thing to happen. 00:45:37.97\00:45:39.83 Now who is the governor of your state? 00:45:39.87\00:45:41.84 You would ask me that. 00:45:41.87\00:45:43.77 I throw you a curve. 00:45:43.81\00:45:45.64 Whoever he is, whoever he be, we thank him for that. 00:45:45.67\00:45:50.18 That means, that's a major concession, 00:45:50.21\00:45:51.81 that's not a little thing. 00:45:51.85\00:45:53.18 That's right. 00:45:53.21\00:45:54.55 Because and there were so many... 00:45:54.58\00:45:55.92 I interviewed in Los Angeles a fellow, who is a dentist, 00:45:55.95\00:45:58.85 who couldn't get clearance in California. 00:45:58.89\00:46:00.82 He said, I'm just coming here to do what I can now 00:46:00.86\00:46:03.19 because I can't practice. 00:46:03.22\00:46:04.56 I'm going out of my limb. I think it's Mr. Thompson. 00:46:04.59\00:46:07.03 Okay. Hopefully you're right. 00:46:07.06\00:46:09.96 Well, that's a major concession 00:46:10.00\00:46:12.80 to see the value of this initiative 00:46:12.83\00:46:15.37 to sort of waive those rules, 00:46:15.40\00:46:17.57 so that our people could come in and practice 00:46:17.61\00:46:19.71 because that's a big thing. 00:46:19.74\00:46:21.84 And as you well said, Benny, 00:46:21.88\00:46:23.88 there are some liability issues. 00:46:23.91\00:46:25.45 You make a mistake, you can kind of be up to creek 00:46:25.48\00:46:28.32 with this kind of thing. 00:46:28.35\00:46:29.88 But we are covered because our, 00:46:29.92\00:46:32.09 the Adventist Risk Management which is the insurance arm 00:46:32.12\00:46:35.52 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in North America 00:46:35.56\00:46:38.99 is providing the coverage. 00:46:39.03\00:46:41.40 And it's coverage that physicians and practitioners 00:46:41.43\00:46:44.50 would not be able to have themselves, 00:46:44.53\00:46:46.53 much greater coverage 00:46:46.57\00:46:47.90 that they are giving us for this. 00:46:47.94\00:46:49.27 And this is a, this is a critical part 00:46:49.30\00:46:51.14 to having people come, because they are very nervous 00:46:51.17\00:46:54.51 about what kind of personal liability 00:46:54.54\00:46:56.44 might they be facing in result of doing something. 00:46:56.48\00:47:00.78 And we live in a very litigious society, 00:47:00.82\00:47:03.25 and so we're thankful 00:47:03.28\00:47:04.65 that risk management has been able to help us 00:47:04.69\00:47:07.02 with having a policy. 00:47:07.06\00:47:08.62 All right. Excellent. 00:47:08.66\00:47:10.23 So that's, that's so important. It is. 00:47:10.26\00:47:12.29 Now, my dear doctor, 00:47:12.33\00:47:14.80 at the risk of redundancy- 00:47:14.83\00:47:20.54 I'm gonna ask you one more time 00:47:20.57\00:47:22.14 because there maybe someone who just tuned in 00:47:22.17\00:47:25.14 or who caught this program midway through, as did. 00:47:25.17\00:47:28.41 I can't remember the fellow's name 00:47:28.44\00:47:29.78 from Idaho who came out to... Was it Paul? 00:47:29.81\00:47:32.88 He caught the program, and he saw us talking, 00:47:32.91\00:47:35.75 you remember? 00:47:35.78\00:47:37.12 And made his way out to Los Angeles, 00:47:37.15\00:47:39.15 really great story, 00:47:39.19\00:47:40.52 he never had a television and never watched the TV 00:47:40.56\00:47:42.32 and went to a hotel and saw, 00:47:42.36\00:47:44.39 happen to have with first television 00:47:44.43\00:47:46.49 in how many years happen to see us. 00:47:46.53\00:47:48.53 One more time for me, if you're my good doctor. 00:47:48.56\00:47:50.60 What do we need and, 00:47:50.63\00:47:52.83 you know, the kinds of specializations 00:47:52.87\00:47:56.14 that we need for Beckley? 00:47:56.17\00:47:58.54 So again we need dentists, dental hygienists. 00:47:58.57\00:48:02.34 We actually need another 17 of those. 00:48:02.38\00:48:05.35 We need additional four to five ophthalmologists 00:48:05.38\00:48:08.88 or optometrists. 00:48:08.92\00:48:10.39 So again our eye care vision care department. 00:48:10.42\00:48:13.79 Then we need pulmonologists, a cardiologists 00:48:13.82\00:48:17.13 or heart specialists, gynecologists, 00:48:17.16\00:48:19.63 female physicians, 00:48:19.66\00:48:21.40 and we need beautician and barber services. 00:48:21.43\00:48:25.23 And of course we need anybody 00:48:25.27\00:48:27.37 who is willing to help move things around 00:48:27.40\00:48:29.20 or data entry people. 00:48:29.24\00:48:30.57 And again, if you have a smile and if you have a heartbeat, 00:48:30.61\00:48:33.38 God can use you. 00:48:33.41\00:48:34.74 But those specialties in particular 00:48:34.78\00:48:37.25 we are in great need of. 00:48:37.28\00:48:38.61 Okay. 00:48:38.65\00:48:39.98 Benny, you are enough of a preacher, 00:48:40.02\00:48:41.88 as well as an accountant and a CPA to be able to wrestle 00:48:41.92\00:48:46.65 with this question very easily. 00:48:46.69\00:48:48.02 Talk to me if you will about the... 00:48:48.06\00:48:50.69 I'll use a $25 word here reciprocity, 00:48:50.73\00:48:53.73 the idea that when you give of yourself, 00:48:53.76\00:48:56.70 God sees to it that something comes back to you. 00:48:56.73\00:48:59.30 And I know to a man when you talk to people 00:48:59.33\00:49:01.47 who are part of these pathway events, 00:49:01.50\00:49:03.17 they will say, everything I give, 00:49:03.20\00:49:04.84 I get back and even more. 00:49:04.87\00:49:06.64 Because the money that we spent, 00:49:06.68\00:49:08.01 like Los Angeles was a very expensive event 00:49:08.04\00:49:10.98 because of the place that we were in all. 00:49:11.01\00:49:13.98 But we felt that, 00:49:14.02\00:49:15.55 that ten times more than the millions dollars 00:49:15.58\00:49:18.15 that we spent, ten times more we spent 00:49:18.19\00:49:20.46 by our volunteers in their travel 00:49:20.49\00:49:23.12 and lodging and food and everything 00:49:23.16\00:49:25.79 while they were there. 00:49:25.83\00:49:27.16 So there's a tremendous amount of donations 00:49:27.20\00:49:32.33 and people's time 00:49:32.37\00:49:33.70 and all for those people who come. 00:49:33.74\00:49:35.54 But in addition to that, 00:49:35.57\00:49:37.54 we have some needs in Beckley because of conference. 00:49:37.57\00:49:40.71 At least the Elder Boggess keeps telling me 00:49:40.74\00:49:42.94 that we're poor, we're poor conference, 00:49:42.98\00:49:45.11 we don't have many members, we don't have much money. 00:49:45.15\00:49:47.78 But our budget for this event, we figure it will be $150,000. 00:49:47.82\00:49:52.55 And so far we only have about $34,000 of that amount. 00:49:52.59\00:49:55.82 So what we have done, and this is what helped us. 00:49:55.86\00:49:58.49 He mentioned the money from the camp meeting, 00:49:58.53\00:50:01.13 but we produced 1,500 cards, 00:50:01.16\00:50:03.77 each card is the sponsorship of one patient. 00:50:03.80\00:50:06.33 We've learned that one patient 00:50:06.37\00:50:08.47 can be served for approximately $100. 00:50:08.50\00:50:11.57 So we had 1,500 cards 00:50:11.61\00:50:14.28 and we came up with more than $13,000 00:50:14.31\00:50:18.75 at the camp meeting of the people that were there, 00:50:18.78\00:50:22.02 who said, we will sponsor one person. 00:50:22.05\00:50:24.62 We have sent notice out to the volunteers 00:50:24.65\00:50:27.16 who have been with us before. 00:50:27.19\00:50:28.72 I just got a note yesterday, there's someone sent in $500, 00:50:28.76\00:50:32.59 so that's for five people. 00:50:32.63\00:50:34.30 So we still need a lot of help in that area. 00:50:34.33\00:50:37.27 But the thing that I have learned 00:50:37.30\00:50:39.20 is that God's problem is not money, 00:50:39.23\00:50:41.04 it never has been. 00:50:41.07\00:50:42.40 As a treasurer, I have said this many times. 00:50:42.44\00:50:44.07 God's problem never has been money 00:50:44.11\00:50:45.47 and it never will be. 00:50:45.51\00:50:46.84 His problem is with us. 00:50:46.88\00:50:48.21 He has more than the capability of giving us back 00:50:48.24\00:50:52.11 more than anything that we give. 00:50:52.15\00:50:54.15 So we need help in sponsoring the patients 00:50:54.18\00:50:56.85 there for Beckley. 00:50:56.89\00:50:58.22 And we've seen that, you know, over and over at 3ABN. 00:50:58.25\00:50:59.92 I concur, it's not money. 00:50:59.95\00:51:01.72 Brother President, 00:51:01.76\00:51:03.09 I want you to take a moment 00:51:03.12\00:51:04.46 and talk to us a little bit in about a minute or so. 00:51:04.49\00:51:08.10 Why is it important for Adventists to get involved 00:51:08.13\00:51:11.77 with this kind of thing? 00:51:11.80\00:51:13.20 Why is it part of our DNA? 00:51:13.23\00:51:14.57 Why is it important for us 00:51:14.60\00:51:15.94 to do to step out and to volunteer 00:51:15.97\00:51:17.54 and to get into the community and do this kind of thing? 00:51:17.57\00:51:19.84 I think, the answer is, 00:51:19.87\00:51:22.48 we all know what the right arm of the ministry is 00:51:22.51\00:51:25.21 and that is the health message, 00:51:25.25\00:51:27.12 that we not only be followers of the Ten Commandments 00:51:27.15\00:51:32.15 and follow Jesus, but, 00:51:32.19\00:51:33.79 that we take care of our health 00:51:33.82\00:51:35.69 and that we share with other people 00:51:35.72\00:51:37.99 how they can take care of this temple 00:51:38.03\00:51:40.20 that we owe to God. 00:51:40.23\00:51:42.70 And so I think, 00:51:42.73\00:51:45.10 that's why this is so important to Adventists, 00:51:45.13\00:51:47.74 this, that we learn 00:51:47.77\00:51:49.10 how to share that part of the message 00:51:49.14\00:51:53.04 in addition to the teachings of the Bible, 00:51:53.07\00:51:57.88 teachings of Jesus. 00:51:57.91\00:51:59.25 Excellent, Excellent. 00:51:59.28\00:52:00.62 We're gonna go to our newsbreak just now, 00:52:00.65\00:52:02.22 then we're gonna come back and we want you to stay by 00:52:02.25\00:52:04.82 because we want to give you the contact information. 00:52:04.85\00:52:07.42 You want to really grab a pen, 00:52:07.46\00:52:09.92 we'll give you a moment until you grab the pen, 00:52:09.96\00:52:11.29 pencil, fire off the iPad, 00:52:11.33\00:52:12.66 however you want to take this information down. 00:52:12.69\00:52:14.20 You're gonna need it 00:52:14.23\00:52:15.56 because we want you to volunteer. 00:52:15.60\00:52:16.93 You can call, you can email, 00:52:16.97\00:52:18.30 you can do it electronically. 00:52:18.33\00:52:20.64 We will go to our newsbreak, 00:52:20.67\00:52:22.94 then we'll come back 00:52:22.97\00:52:24.31 and we'll give you the contact information 00:52:24.34\00:52:25.67 that you're gonna need. 00:52:25.71\00:52:27.04
