It's great to be back. 00:02:33.72\00:02:36.05 The studio looks great. 00:02:36.08\00:02:37.45 Yes, and you look nice and casual today, 00:02:37.49\00:02:39.62 you kind of... 00:02:39.65\00:02:40.99 Well, you know, at some point you have to relax a little bit. 00:02:41.02\00:02:43.53 Exactly. 00:02:43.59\00:02:44.93 And after being here, and doing some recordings, 00:02:44.96\00:02:47.23 and some work and stuff, 00:02:47.30\00:02:48.60 may be it's just time to chill a little bit, so. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.63 You know, inevitably there's somebody in our audience 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.87 that might say, 00:02:52.90\00:02:54.24 they're exited about this but who is this guy? 00:02:54.27\00:02:56.20 So kindly give us a summery of your humble beginnings 00:02:56.24\00:02:59.84 and what you do. 00:02:59.87\00:03:01.31 Well, since the age of five, I've been playing the violin. 00:03:01.34\00:03:05.21 I grew up in a communist country Cuba. 00:03:05.25\00:03:08.02 The Government offered me a scholarship 00:03:08.05\00:03:09.88 when I was nine years old to go to Russia 00:03:09.92\00:03:12.22 and study there in Moscow at the Conservatory of Music. 00:03:12.25\00:03:15.39 They said, "It's the best music school in the world, 00:03:15.42\00:03:18.03 you will be famous, your family will have a better life. 00:03:18.06\00:03:21.40 All you have to do is renounce your faith in God." 00:03:21.43\00:03:23.73 And I told them, "No." 00:03:23.77\00:03:25.47 And so they said, "Fine, 00:03:25.50\00:03:27.20 you're never going to amount to be anything. 00:03:27.24\00:03:29.64 Good luck." 00:03:29.67\00:03:31.04 So, my whole life in many ways 00:03:31.07\00:03:33.17 I've been told by different people, 00:03:33.21\00:03:35.14 "No you can't. 00:03:35.18\00:03:36.51 No you can't." 00:03:36.54\00:03:37.88 And one of my favorite verses is Philippians 4:13, 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.52 "I can do all things 00:03:40.58\00:03:41.98 through Christ who strengths me." 00:03:42.02\00:03:43.35 Amen. 00:03:43.39\00:03:44.72 And it's not just anything or all things, 00:03:44.75\00:03:47.62 it's all things that God want me to do. 00:03:47.66\00:03:49.39 That's right. 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.79 Because when we do want we want to do 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.83 but it's not God's will, 00:03:52.86\00:03:55.06 we are not really better off for it. 00:03:55.10\00:03:57.57 So, my desire is to do all things 00:03:57.60\00:04:00.37 that God wants me to do 00:04:00.44\00:04:03.04 because He is the one that strengthens me. 00:04:03.07\00:04:05.71 At the age of I think, it was six or seven, 00:04:05.74\00:04:08.91 I was diagnosed with rheumatic fever. 00:04:08.94\00:04:11.95 Back then, it was the pre serious thing, 00:04:11.98\00:04:14.02 the doctor said, he is never grow 00:04:14.05\00:04:16.32 to live past the teenage years. 00:04:16.35\00:04:19.59 My family came to this country when I was 10, 00:04:19.62\00:04:22.46 I was diagnosed in 1990 00:04:22.49\00:04:25.66 with a very rare disease at that time. 00:04:25.69\00:04:30.37 Ninety percent of the people who had this died, 00:04:30.43\00:04:34.87 and yet, I was in the 10 percent. 00:04:34.90\00:04:37.17 And so my whole life, 00:04:37.21\00:04:39.01 in things that have happened and certain people 00:04:39.04\00:04:42.08 that have said to me, "No, you cant, no, you wont." 00:04:42.11\00:04:45.55 And I say, we can do all things that God wants us to do 00:04:45.58\00:04:50.09 through Him for His honor and glory. 00:04:50.15\00:04:52.39 I like the way you put that because it is, 00:04:52.42\00:04:54.12 if we are not doing at Lord's will 00:04:54.16\00:04:56.26 then we're just using that text to accomplish our own will. 00:04:56.29\00:04:58.76 Exactly, right. That's amazing. 00:04:58.79\00:05:00.23 That's the difference. 00:05:00.26\00:05:01.56 Continue. Praise the Lord for that. 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.57 Now I have the opportunity to continue to share music. 00:05:03.60\00:05:09.44 And you know how powerful music is, being a musician. 00:05:09.47\00:05:13.04 How music breaks down barriers. 00:05:13.07\00:05:16.21 How it reaches hearts in ways that word can't some times. 00:05:16.24\00:05:22.02 I have people come to me in Churches and say, 00:05:22.05\00:05:24.32 "I probably would have never come to this Church 00:05:24.35\00:05:26.49 to hear a sermon, 00:05:26.52\00:05:27.89 but somebody invited me for a concert. 00:05:27.92\00:05:30.23 And I've given my heart to Jesus Christ tonight." 00:05:30.26\00:05:33.06 So music opens doors, 00:05:33.09\00:05:34.93 it breaks down barriers, it builds bridges. 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.67 And I use the violin, 00:05:37.70\00:05:40.74 an instrument that sounds like the human voice 00:05:40.80\00:05:44.91 to share the love of Jesus. 00:05:44.94\00:05:47.04 And I've been to countries like you know, Russia, Ukraine, 00:05:47.08\00:05:50.21 Czechoslovakia, Romania, China, communist countries. 00:05:50.25\00:05:52.75 India. 00:05:52.78\00:05:54.12 India as well. 00:05:54.18\00:05:55.52 When I went to some of these places 00:05:55.55\00:05:56.89 where you can't preach the Gospel, 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.92 it's illegal or highly discouraged. 00:05:59.95\00:06:02.59 And so we do concerts with classical music. 00:06:02.62\00:06:05.76 But then half way through 00:06:05.79\00:06:07.13 I start sneaking in the old names 00:06:07.13\00:06:09.13 and Gospel songs. 00:06:09.16\00:06:10.57 And people have never heard these songs, 00:06:10.60\00:06:12.33 they're mesmerized. 00:06:12.37\00:06:13.74 I remember playing the Hallelujah chorus 00:06:13.77\00:06:15.14 for the first time in Moscow, in 1993, 00:06:15.17\00:06:19.01 people had never heard it, they were crying. 00:06:19.04\00:06:22.44 And there been times when I have just felt you know, 00:06:22.48\00:06:24.48 I've got to share my testimony, I've got to share Jesus. 00:06:24.51\00:06:28.82 And then I make an invitation then people come forward, 00:06:28.85\00:06:32.35 and I talk to them 00:06:32.39\00:06:33.76 and I find out some of these folks 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.72 are under cover police officers 00:06:35.76\00:06:37.66 that the Government sent to make sure 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.93 that nobody talked about God. 00:06:40.00\00:06:42.13 And yet, the whole spirit had touched their hearts 00:06:42.16\00:06:44.87 and they have come to Jesus Christ. 00:06:44.90\00:06:46.90 So, music is very powerful, 00:06:46.94\00:06:49.44 music is a language, it's an avenue, 00:06:49.47\00:06:51.77 it's a way to reach people, 00:06:51.81\00:06:53.58 and I'm so exited about the opportunity 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.71 to use that medium to share Christ with others. 00:06:56.75\00:06:59.91 You know, you've an ambassador, 00:07:00.05\00:07:01.38 I could use that word often times, 00:07:01.42\00:07:03.28 the word ambassador is misused. 00:07:03.32\00:07:04.82 But ambassador is one 00:07:04.85\00:07:06.29 who is sent to represent a country. 00:07:06.32\00:07:08.62 And really, when you go to a communist country 00:07:08.66\00:07:10.59 and you are Christian, 00:07:10.66\00:07:12.06 you have to find a way as an ambassador 00:07:12.09\00:07:14.00 to not to hide your anonymity, 00:07:14.03\00:07:17.17 to not hide your identity, I should say. 00:07:17.20\00:07:19.77 You are under cloak, 00:07:19.80\00:07:21.84 but you're clearly visible to all 00:07:21.87\00:07:24.31 those who are listening to the music. 00:07:24.34\00:07:26.34 When you mentioned the Hallelujah chorus, 00:07:26.37\00:07:28.18 I thought to myself, 00:07:28.21\00:07:29.74 I wonder if he has one on recording somewhere. 00:07:29.78\00:07:32.08 Of course. 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.45 And we're going to talk about that in a moment, 00:07:33.52\00:07:35.22 but you have tremendous voice, you work with Amazing Facts, 00:07:35.25\00:07:39.19 Asian Aid, we had an opportunity to work 00:07:39.22\00:07:41.19 with Jim Rennie there. 00:07:41.22\00:07:42.56 I know, you went. 00:07:42.59\00:07:43.93 I saw the program, it was fantastic. 00:07:43.96\00:07:45.29 And we walked some of the same streets 00:07:45.33\00:07:47.23 in India together. 00:07:47.30\00:07:48.60 But it's just been a blessing. 00:07:48.63\00:07:49.96 I'm touched by the music ministry 00:07:50.00\00:07:51.93 that you have and I've seen you grow through the years. 00:07:51.97\00:07:55.30 And it's hard for those who are listening and watching, 00:07:55.34\00:07:58.07 well, those who are watching 00:07:58.11\00:07:59.44 particularly on this next reference, 00:07:59.47\00:08:01.28 to miss this violin that's in front of us. 00:08:01.31\00:08:03.98 Talk about this violin for a moment 00:08:04.01\00:08:05.75 because that is the voice. 00:08:05.78\00:08:08.05 And not only do you play 00:08:08.08\00:08:09.42 but you are very good sports person. 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.19 I've listened to you talked to audiences 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.39 between your songs and your appeals about Jesus. 00:08:13.42\00:08:15.59 But just talk about this violin for a moment, 00:08:15.62\00:08:18.03 this instrument that the Lord has chosen for you 00:08:18.06\00:08:20.46 to communicate the Gospel. 00:08:20.53\00:08:22.20 Well, when my family arrived in Chicago in 1983, 00:08:22.23\00:08:26.47 we went to somebody that was recommended to us 00:08:26.50\00:08:29.54 by my violin teacher to buy a violin. 00:08:29.57\00:08:33.14 And so we brought a $1, 500 violin, 00:08:33.17\00:08:36.85 which was a lot of money for us. 00:08:36.88\00:08:38.21 That's true. 00:08:38.25\00:08:39.58 Now people may hear this and say, 00:08:39.61\00:08:41.62 "Well, that's a lot of money." 00:08:41.65\00:08:42.98 And it is, but not for violin. 00:08:43.02\00:08:44.35 Not for violin. 00:08:44.39\00:08:45.72 When you consider that some of the Strad, 00:08:45.75\00:08:47.09 various violins are selling 00:08:47.16\00:08:48.49 at for upwards of $10 millions these days. 00:08:48.52\00:08:51.03 Wow. 00:08:51.06\00:08:52.39 $1,500 is not a lot. 00:08:52.43\00:08:53.80 But when you've been in this country 00:08:53.83\00:08:55.13 for three years, 00:08:55.16\00:08:56.50 like my family had, 00:08:56.53\00:08:57.93 to come up with $1, 500 for an instrument, 00:08:57.97\00:09:00.67 you know, it was quite a bit a money. 00:09:00.70\00:09:02.04 Oh, yeah. 00:09:02.07\00:09:03.41 And then a couple of years later 00:09:03.44\00:09:04.77 I upgraded to one that was about double that amount. 00:09:04.81\00:09:08.28 And then I was in a high school, 00:09:08.31\00:09:11.01 I was in a college orchestra while I was in high school, 00:09:11.05\00:09:15.15 and we were doing an orchestra rehearsal. 00:09:15.18\00:09:17.92 And I had a seizure in the middle of a rehearsal 00:09:17.95\00:09:21.19 and I fell forward and I crushed my violin, 00:09:21.22\00:09:26.53 I mean, it was in thousand pieces, 00:09:26.56\00:09:28.70 the violin was in. 00:09:28.73\00:09:30.17 And we didn't have insurance, so we lost the entire thing. 00:09:30.20\00:09:35.07 And then, I began raising funds for a new violin 00:09:35.10\00:09:40.18 and this was a huge, 00:09:40.21\00:09:42.18 huge improvement, sacrifice, jump in price, 00:09:42.21\00:09:45.68 every thing else. 00:09:45.71\00:09:47.05 But you know, I think I want this as the dream big dream. 00:09:47.12\00:09:50.09 That's right. 00:09:50.12\00:09:51.45 Again, not for our glory but for Him. 00:09:51.49\00:09:54.29 And when we do, He opens up the doors. 00:09:54.32\00:09:56.86 And he open up the door. 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.26 I've had this violin now for close to 30 years. 00:09:58.29\00:10:00.83 Wow. 00:10:00.90\00:10:02.20 It's like a part of my family, you know. 00:10:02.23\00:10:05.93 It's my companion when I go alone on trips, you know, 00:10:05.97\00:10:09.30 And you take care of it, I mean, 00:10:09.34\00:10:10.67 I've watched you, you know, 00:10:10.71\00:10:12.41 when the room is full of people and you know, your violin 00:10:12.44\00:10:14.71 when it's acclimating to room temperature. 00:10:14.74\00:10:18.11 You keep your eye on that 00:10:18.15\00:10:19.48 and make sure that nothing happens because really, 00:10:19.51\00:10:22.55 when you become one with your instrument, 00:10:22.58\00:10:25.72 it doesn't have a soul, it not alive, 00:10:25.75\00:10:28.72 but you can feel the nuances. 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.49 You have become one with that board, 00:10:30.53\00:10:33.23 the strings, and just... 00:10:33.26\00:10:35.23 I could only imagine, when I see you play that instrument 00:10:35.26\00:10:37.93 I equate it to a really, really good singer that, you know, 00:10:37.97\00:10:43.34 there are some dynamic singers out in the world. 00:10:43.37\00:10:44.87 But you could really make that instrument sing. 00:10:44.91\00:10:46.71 And for those of you, who are watching the program, 00:10:46.74\00:10:48.54 you're going to be bless today to hear at least four songs, 00:10:48.58\00:10:51.88 four songs, you are going to be bless hear. 00:10:51.91\00:10:53.45 So don't go away. 00:10:53.48\00:10:54.88 But tell us about some of the people 00:10:54.92\00:10:56.52 that you've worked with. 00:10:56.55\00:10:57.89 I mean, you've... 00:10:57.92\00:10:59.25 I mentioned, you know, Amazing Facts. 00:10:59.29\00:11:00.69 Defiantly the 3ABN family, Asian Aid, 00:11:00.76\00:11:02.16 but talk about some of the artists 00:11:02.19\00:11:03.73 out in the broad Christian world 00:11:03.76\00:11:05.13 that you've been blessed to be able to work with. 00:11:05.16\00:11:07.10 Well, I've been able to have the opportunity to collaborate, 00:11:07.13\00:11:11.47 which is as you know 00:11:11.50\00:11:12.90 for musician is the wonderful thing. 00:11:12.93\00:11:15.84 And there are people that I consider close friends, 00:11:15.87\00:11:19.27 others that are just friends, 00:11:19.31\00:11:20.64 other that are just acquaintances. 00:11:20.68\00:11:24.25 But people like Larnelle Harris, 00:11:24.28\00:11:25.88 who in my opinion is perhaps the greatest Gospel singer 00:11:25.91\00:11:28.08 of all times. 00:11:28.12\00:11:29.45 One of the best tenners out there. 00:11:29.48\00:11:30.85 For sure. 00:11:30.89\00:11:32.22 Somebody like a John Stoddart who can do so much. 00:11:32.25\00:11:35.46 And another plain 00:11:35.49\00:11:36.99 I've had the opportunity to be on the same stage 00:11:37.03\00:11:39.23 with a guy like David Foster, 00:11:39.26\00:11:41.36 who has produced some of the greatest you know, 00:11:41.40\00:11:43.80 musicians, and recordings, and artists out there. 00:11:43.83\00:11:47.17 And then somebody like a Michael Card 00:11:47.20\00:11:49.30 who has written so many meaningful songs 00:11:49.34\00:11:53.31 that focus on Jesus Christ. 00:11:53.34\00:11:56.18 Those are musically and artistically 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.51 of course, highlights. 00:11:58.55\00:11:59.88 You can imagine of my life 00:11:59.95\00:12:01.95 to be able to work with some of these musicians. 00:12:01.98\00:12:03.69 There are other people Sandi Patty, 00:12:03.72\00:12:05.05 Heritage singers, I mean, so many other. 00:12:05.09\00:12:06.42 John Lomacang. 00:12:06.45\00:12:07.79 We did a, remember, we did together. 00:12:07.82\00:12:09.16 Oh, that's right. 00:12:09.19\00:12:10.53 Touch of The Master's Hands, several years ago. 00:12:10.56\00:12:13.03 That was at Roy Rogers Auditorium Yeah. 00:12:13.06\00:12:15.40 So these are just highlights 00:12:15.43\00:12:17.97 that feed you as a musician to be able to work with, 00:12:18.00\00:12:20.90 other very talented individuals 00:12:20.94\00:12:23.04 and people that have dedicated their talents 00:12:23.07\00:12:25.61 for God's honor and glory, which is very important. 00:12:25.64\00:12:27.64 I want to segue into one of these songs 00:12:27.68\00:12:29.74 that we're going to now introduce to our audience. 00:12:29.78\00:12:31.85 Talk about that song El Shaddai, 00:12:31.88\00:12:33.48 and the person that's going to be, 00:12:33.52\00:12:35.68 both of you that are going to be playing together 00:12:35.72\00:12:37.09 because he's such a accomplish musician, 00:12:37.15\00:12:39.42 it would not be appropriate to say accompanying you, 00:12:39.45\00:12:42.12 you can talk about this. 00:12:42.16\00:12:43.49 No, I'm not accompanying him. 00:12:43.53\00:12:44.99 But you know El Shaddai 00:12:45.03\00:12:46.86 is the most popular contemporary Christian song 00:12:46.90\00:12:49.60 of all time. 00:12:49.63\00:12:51.63 And I truly believe that Michael Card was inspired 00:12:51.67\00:12:54.97 by God and the Holy spirit 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.34 to write that song that reminds us 00:12:56.37\00:12:58.81 our wonderful savior. 00:12:58.84\00:13:00.88 You know, we are here by God's grace 00:13:00.91\00:13:04.35 and the gift of salvation is free to anybody 00:13:04.38\00:13:07.52 because of what Jesus did for you and me. 00:13:07.55\00:13:10.42 And this song was a part of the concert 00:13:10.49\00:13:12.59 that I did couple of years ago 00:13:12.62\00:13:14.16 and now to celebrate 25 years of music ministry. 00:13:14.19\00:13:16.83 And I invited some of these friends 00:13:16.86\00:13:18.89 and wonderful musicians to come and be a part of it. 00:13:18.93\00:13:21.63 And so I'm excited that we get to share it now. 00:13:21.66\00:13:23.33 Wow. 00:13:23.37\00:13:24.70 So, be blessed as you listen to the song El Shaddai. 00:13:24.73\00:13:27.54 Okay, if you clapped you have to sing 00:13:39.98\00:13:42.62 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:13:42.65\00:13:47.32 El-elyon na adonai 00:13:47.36\00:13:51.79 Age to age you're still the same 00:13:51.83\00:13:56.33 By the power of the name 00:13:56.36\00:14:01.04 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:14:01.07\00:14:05.64 Erkamka na adonai 00:14:05.67\00:14:10.18 We will praise and lift you high 00:14:10.25\00:14:14.88 El shaddai 00:14:14.92\00:14:19.42 Through your love and through the ram 00:14:19.45\00:14:23.93 You saved the son of Abraham 00:14:23.96\00:14:28.43 And by the power of your hand 00:14:28.46\00:14:33.13 Turned the sea into dry land 00:14:33.17\00:14:37.71 To the outcast on her knees 00:14:37.74\00:14:42.08 You were the God who really sees 00:14:42.11\00:14:47.58 And by your might 00:14:47.62\00:14:49.72 You set your children free 00:14:49.75\00:14:54.29 Ready. 00:14:54.32\00:14:55.86 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:14:55.89\00:15:00.53 El-elyon na adonai 00:15:00.56\00:15:04.97 Age to age you're still the same 00:15:05.00\00:15:09.50 By the power of the name 00:15:09.54\00:15:14.01 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:15:14.08\00:15:18.65 Erkamka na adonai 00:15:18.68\00:15:23.15 We will praise and lift you high 00:15:23.18\00:15:27.86 El shaddai 00:15:27.89\00:15:32.46 Through the years you've made it clear 00:15:32.49\00:15:37.23 That the time of Christ was near 00:15:37.27\00:15:41.70 Though the people failed to see 00:15:41.74\00:15:45.81 What messiah ought to be 00:15:45.84\00:15:50.21 And though your word contained the plan 00:15:50.25\00:15:54.92 They just could not understand 00:15:54.95\00:15:59.92 Your most awesome work was done 00:15:59.95\00:16:04.69 Through the frailty of your son 00:16:04.73\00:16:11.00 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:16:11.03\00:16:15.94 El-elyon na adonai 00:16:15.97\00:16:20.61 Age to age you're still the same 00:16:20.68\00:16:25.18 By the power of the name 00:16:25.21\00:16:29.92 El shaddai, el shaddai 00:16:29.95\00:16:34.46 Erkamka na adonai 00:16:34.49\00:16:39.09 We will praise and lift you high 00:16:39.13\00:16:43.83 El shaddai. 00:16:43.87\00:16:48.24 We will praise and lift you high 00:16:48.27\00:16:52.94 El shaddai. 00:16:52.97\00:16:54.84 Isn't that a wonderful song 00:17:05.95\00:17:07.29 by the artists collaborating together, 00:17:07.32\00:17:11.16 Michael Card, what a writer. 00:17:11.19\00:17:14.36 And Jamie, was blessed to be able to accompany him. 00:17:14.40\00:17:18.40 You not only did that with the studio here 00:17:18.43\00:17:21.34 and the concert 00:17:21.37\00:17:22.70 but you play together in the same venue. 00:17:22.74\00:17:25.54 That's amazing. 00:17:25.57\00:17:26.91 And into the background you saw a young man 00:17:26.98\00:17:28.54 which you'll get to find out, but his name is John Stoddart. 00:17:28.58\00:17:31.85 When we talk about that-- we are listening to the song, 00:17:31.88\00:17:34.65 an accomplish musician in and of himself. 00:17:34.68\00:17:38.39 And one other things we talk about when people are geniuses, 00:17:38.42\00:17:41.76 I like that point, you know, 00:17:41.79\00:17:43.12 there are some master musicians 00:17:43.16\00:17:45.96 that they can be in the dark place 00:17:45.99\00:17:49.93 with just them and their instrument 00:17:49.96\00:17:51.63 and the sheet of music, 00:17:51.67\00:17:53.00 but don't put them in the societal setting 00:17:53.03\00:17:54.44 because they don't function very well. 00:17:54.47\00:17:56.14 That's not the truth about John Stoddart, 00:17:56.17\00:17:57.81 what a balanced man. 00:17:57.84\00:17:59.17 John is amazing. 00:17:59.21\00:18:00.61 And I think 00:18:00.64\00:18:01.98 it's because he has dedicated his life 00:18:02.01\00:18:03.78 for God's honor and glory. 00:18:03.81\00:18:05.41 I have no doubt, Pastor John, 00:18:05.45\00:18:07.38 that if John was doing what he does for God, 00:18:07.45\00:18:11.65 for the world, he would be making a lot more money. 00:18:11.69\00:18:15.86 You know, he'd would have a lot of fame, all the stuff. 00:18:15.89\00:18:18.69 But God has blessed him regardless. 00:18:18.73\00:18:21.80 And he has made and he's making a huge impact 00:18:21.83\00:18:24.27 in the lives of people, and that's what its all about. 00:18:24.30\00:18:27.04 You know, we can't take our money, 00:18:27.07\00:18:28.77 we can't take our positions. 00:18:28.80\00:18:30.24 Can't take it with you. 00:18:30.31\00:18:31.64 What we'll leave really behind you know, if we're not around, 00:18:31.67\00:18:35.71 when we're not around anymore if Jesus doesn't come back. 00:18:35.74\00:18:38.65 It's more important to me anyway 00:18:38.68\00:18:40.72 to leave a crop of young violinists 00:18:40.75\00:18:43.92 who are excited about using their talents 00:18:43.99\00:18:46.19 for God's honor and glory. 00:18:46.22\00:18:47.72 And it is about creating a certain amount of fame 00:18:47.76\00:18:50.13 or fortune and this and that, the other. 00:18:50.16\00:18:52.46 Because, when you're gone that's all gone too. 00:18:52.49\00:18:55.80 You know, unfortunately, 00:18:55.83\00:18:57.17 just recently there's a very popular, secular artist Prince, 00:18:57.23\00:19:01.74 who had so many religious influences, 00:19:01.77\00:19:04.34 early Adventist, and Jehovah's Witnesses. 00:19:04.37\00:19:06.84 And when they close your eyes in death 00:19:06.91\00:19:09.61 they could leave an anthology 00:19:09.64\00:19:10.98 that just would go on for decades 00:19:11.01\00:19:12.75 and you know, how the long the world lasts. 00:19:12.78\00:19:15.85 But what you, the seed you sowed in your life 00:19:15.88\00:19:19.22 are the seeds that are going to, 00:19:19.25\00:19:20.59 as the Bible says, "they rest from their labors, 00:19:20.62\00:19:23.22 " speaking of the Christian, "and their works follow them." 00:19:23.26\00:19:25.53 So that's the wonderful thing about it. 00:19:25.56\00:19:26.93 And that song El Shaddai, 00:19:26.96\00:19:28.26 getting back to the song that was just done, 00:19:28.30\00:19:29.63 Amy Grant was the one 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.00 that we all remember singing that song. 00:19:31.03\00:19:32.37 Of course, she made it huge. 00:19:32.40\00:19:33.74 She made it a powerful song. 00:19:33.77\00:19:35.10 Talk about this next song, Meditation. 00:19:35.14\00:19:37.77 You know we live in a world, 00:19:37.81\00:19:40.08 I know it's like that for you as it is for me, 00:19:40.11\00:19:43.01 where we are constantly plugged in, 00:19:43.04\00:19:45.48 our phones, our computers, the internet, the sounds, 00:19:45.51\00:19:50.22 the buzzes, all of that stuff. 00:19:50.29\00:19:53.76 And I don't know I can imagine your days like mine, 00:19:53.79\00:19:57.13 from the moment we wake up till the moment we go to sleep 00:19:57.16\00:19:59.53 there is some thing to do and it doesn't stop. 00:19:59.56\00:20:02.56 And if you have a, you know, 00:20:02.60\00:20:03.93 things-to-do list with 50 things, 00:20:03.97\00:20:05.93 by the time you crossed out three or four 00:20:05.97\00:20:08.24 you've already add another 20. 00:20:08.27\00:20:10.37 And it just never ends. 00:20:10.41\00:20:12.67 And one other things that I think is so important 00:20:12.71\00:20:15.18 as Christians is for us to take time away 00:20:15.21\00:20:18.45 from the busyness of all of that 00:20:18.48\00:20:20.78 and connect our power cord to the power source 00:20:20.82\00:20:24.95 and spend time in study, 00:20:24.99\00:20:26.65 in prayer, in meditation, and in song. 00:20:26.72\00:20:30.59 You know, people ask me, 00:20:30.63\00:20:31.96 do you still like to play the same songs 00:20:31.99\00:20:34.96 over and over again? 00:20:35.00\00:20:36.33 I still have times 00:20:36.36\00:20:38.53 when I just sit and play by myself to praise the lord. 00:20:38.57\00:20:43.54 It's part of my worship time, you know. 00:20:43.57\00:20:46.71 And we need to take that time. 00:20:46.74\00:20:49.91 And so this song, 00:20:49.98\00:20:51.68 the classical piece called Meditation from Thais 00:20:51.71\00:20:55.48 is almost like a take a deep breath, relax, 00:20:55.52\00:21:00.36 and just time out you know, unplug, 00:21:00.39\00:21:03.73 disconnect and spend some time with the Lord. 00:21:03.76\00:21:07.00 Is there anyone accompanying you on this? 00:21:07.03\00:21:08.36 Is anyone playing with you on this one? 00:21:08.40\00:21:09.73 John Stoddart. 00:21:09.76\00:21:11.10 Okay, you are going to be blessed. 00:21:11.13\00:21:12.90 Here is the song, Meditation. 00:21:12.93\00:21:14.94 That song takes you to places 00:26:15.47\00:26:17.01 that you did not know existed until you heard it. 00:26:17.04\00:26:19.97 And I went through a number of location changes 00:26:20.01\00:26:22.64 during that song. 00:26:22.68\00:26:24.05 I was first in you know, 00:26:24.08\00:26:25.41 beautiful setting where the sun was rising 00:26:25.45\00:26:27.42 and the dew was still on the grass, 00:26:27.45\00:26:28.92 and it was a beautiful morning 00:26:28.95\00:26:30.29 where all the nature was singing, the trees. 00:26:30.32\00:26:32.92 And then when you, 00:26:32.95\00:26:34.59 you took me to Germany during a cold time of the year, 00:26:34.62\00:26:37.26 during the oppression 00:26:37.33\00:26:38.96 that country experienced in Poland. 00:26:38.99\00:26:41.50 And then you brought me back to a wedding ceremony. 00:26:41.53\00:26:44.07 It's amazing. 00:26:44.13\00:26:45.47 Tell us, talk about that song, who wrote that, 00:26:45.50\00:26:47.34 who composed that song. 00:26:47.40\00:26:48.74 A French composer, 00:26:48.77\00:26:50.67 Jules Massenet wrote it as part of an opera. 00:26:50.71\00:26:54.58 And this is probably the most popular 00:26:54.61\00:26:57.41 and well known of the pieces Meditation from Thais. 00:26:57.45\00:27:03.72 Speaking of what you just said, 00:27:03.75\00:27:06.45 music is very powerful that way in allowing us to travel 00:27:06.49\00:27:11.86 all over the world basically, and yet, we are right here. 00:27:11.89\00:27:15.00 The first time I recorded that song was 1987, 00:27:15.03\00:27:18.70 and that were that piece, I should say, 00:27:18.73\00:27:20.34 we were in Long Island, New York. 00:27:20.37\00:27:22.64 And I went to a studio 00:27:22.67\00:27:26.01 where most of the stuff 00:27:26.04\00:27:27.38 they did was Rock 'n' Roll music, 00:27:27.41\00:27:28.98 and the engineer was pretty much you know, 00:27:29.01\00:27:31.15 kind of that long hair and all that stuff. 00:27:31.18\00:27:33.92 And so I think he had a hard time 00:27:33.95\00:27:35.78 with classical and Gospel songs that we were recording. 00:27:35.82\00:27:39.62 And back then you can remember and appreciate this, 00:27:39.65\00:27:42.86 they had a reel to reel tape. 00:27:42.89\00:27:44.23 Oh, yeah. 00:27:44.26\00:27:45.59 And you know, if you messed up, 00:27:45.63\00:27:47.00 you had to start from the beginning, 00:27:47.03\00:27:48.33 none of the stuff today 00:27:48.36\00:27:49.70 where you just sing a phrase and you go back, 00:27:49.73\00:27:51.47 you just had to do the whole thing all over. 00:27:51.50\00:27:53.60 So you record it and if you didn't want it 00:27:53.64\00:27:55.44 you know, go back, take two and take three 00:27:55.47\00:27:57.91 until you got the right one. 00:27:57.94\00:27:59.31 And it could take hours you know. 00:27:59.34\00:28:01.98 Anyway, when we did this piece, the guy fell asleep, 00:28:02.01\00:28:07.78 the engineer did, 00:28:07.82\00:28:09.18 and when the piece was over I said, 00:28:09.22\00:28:11.95 "Bob, I want to do this again." 00:28:11.99\00:28:13.32 And you know, he kind of jumped back up into his seat 00:28:13.39\00:28:15.96 and said, "Okay, lets do it, Medication, take two." 00:28:15.99\00:28:20.83 The piece put him to sleep 00:28:20.86\00:28:22.53 so he associate it not with meditation 00:28:22.56\00:28:25.07 but with medication. 00:28:25.10\00:28:27.24 But it can't be medicating 00:28:27.27\00:28:28.90 to listen to something so beautiful and relaxing 00:28:28.94\00:28:31.21 when we're so used to just go, go, go. 00:28:31.24\00:28:33.48 You know, I commented how a song like that, 00:28:33.51\00:28:35.31 in the subway of New York city 00:28:35.34\00:28:37.55 with a nice pair of Bose noise cancelling headsets. 00:28:37.58\00:28:41.22 It's not a commercial for Bose. That's right. 00:28:41.25\00:28:43.05 But could really transport you to different place. 00:28:43.08\00:28:45.59 And what do you need in the city like New York? 00:28:45.62\00:28:47.86 You need peace. 00:28:47.89\00:28:49.22 So did you record this, by the way? 00:28:49.26\00:28:51.26 Is it on any of your new projects? 00:28:51.29\00:28:52.66 Yes, like that 25th anniversary DVD, 00:28:52.69\00:28:55.26 that El Shaddai was part of it as well. 00:28:55.30\00:28:57.07 Okay, good. 00:28:57.13\00:28:58.47 So some of the songs you've done 00:28:58.50\00:28:59.83 that far is on one project? 00:28:59.87\00:29:01.27 Yeah, and obviously, 00:29:01.30\00:29:02.64 we recorded in the studio right here, 00:29:02.67\00:29:04.14 the violin part and then we go back in forth 00:29:04.17\00:29:06.47 between the video footage and the live studio. 00:29:06.51\00:29:10.18 Now these two songs El Shaddai, 00:29:10.21\00:29:12.15 one of the most popular Christian songs, 00:29:12.18\00:29:14.62 this French compose song, Medication, Meditation. 00:29:14.65\00:29:18.92 I'm not going to figure that for long time. 00:29:18.95\00:29:20.79 But then Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, 00:29:20.82\00:29:22.52 now the song that it's in the hymnal, 00:29:22.56\00:29:24.29 we've sung that for years. 00:29:24.36\00:29:25.69 But what impact has that song had on you? 00:29:25.73\00:29:27.60 Because I know that you don't play things 00:29:27.66\00:29:29.03 that don't misters to you either. 00:29:29.06\00:29:30.40 Right. Talk about that. 00:29:30.47\00:29:32.20 You know, that song helps me to remember 00:29:32.23\00:29:38.47 that what we do, what you do, 00:29:38.51\00:29:41.18 what I do isn't for our own glory and gain 00:29:41.21\00:29:45.95 it's for the glory of Jesus 00:29:45.98\00:29:48.65 and the honor of God and His kingdom. 00:29:48.68\00:29:50.82 And as you know, being a musicians 00:29:50.89\00:29:53.05 and being up front 00:29:53.09\00:29:54.42 you can some times lose your focus. 00:29:54.46\00:29:57.76 Because, people meanwhile, 00:29:57.79\00:29:59.13 they come up and give you a compliment, 00:29:59.16\00:30:01.83 but there have been many times in my life 00:30:01.86\00:30:03.63 when I start to let that go to my head. 00:30:03.67\00:30:06.80 And I started to think, what? 00:30:06.84\00:30:08.50 I am pretty good, aren't I? 00:30:08.54\00:30:09.90 You know, I'm alright. 00:30:09.97\00:30:11.31 And you start to look at yourself 00:30:11.34\00:30:12.91 or focus on yourself more than God. 00:30:12.94\00:30:15.48 And this song is just a gentle reminder, you know. 00:30:15.51\00:30:20.48 Look at Jesus Christ, He is our focus, 00:30:20.52\00:30:24.39 he is what we need to be fixed on, 00:30:24.42\00:30:28.92 and when we do every thing else will fall by the way side, 00:30:28.96\00:30:33.86 every thing will grow strangely dim, 00:30:33.90\00:30:37.30 and we will be able to appreciate His magnificence, 00:30:37.33\00:30:42.17 His grace, His power and glory. 00:30:42.20\00:30:44.61 And so that song does that to me and for me, 00:30:44.64\00:30:49.14 so that's why I want to share it. 00:30:49.18\00:30:50.61 All right, Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus, 00:30:50.68\00:30:52.81 allow the Lord to speak to you 00:30:52.85\00:30:54.55 through this wonderful meditative piece. 00:30:54.58\00:30:56.92 Thank you once again, Jamie, for that song, 00:34:02.47\00:34:04.14 Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus. 00:34:04.21\00:34:05.77 You know, you made a very good point as the person 00:34:05.81\00:34:08.48 who's always in the public eye 00:34:08.51\00:34:09.94 and we all have that blessing 00:34:09.98\00:34:12.25 of being able to minister for the Lord. 00:34:12.28\00:34:13.65 But I said to people... 00:34:13.72\00:34:15.05 Responsibility as well. 00:34:15.08\00:34:16.42 The responsibility is amazing. 00:34:16.45\00:34:18.15 A professor down at one of our schools in Tennessee, 00:34:18.19\00:34:21.79 Seventh-day Adventist University, 00:34:21.82\00:34:24.49 gave me book about how to handle compliments. 00:34:24.53\00:34:28.10 Because you know, sometimes people will compliment as an, 00:34:28.13\00:34:30.83 instead of bouncing the glory back to God, truly, 00:34:30.87\00:34:34.30 you have to make sure that our heads 00:34:34.34\00:34:36.24 can fit through the door with our bodies. 00:34:36.27\00:34:38.24 But that's a very good point, 00:34:38.27\00:34:39.61 reflecting the glory back to God 00:34:39.64\00:34:41.08 because the instrument, both of you, 00:34:41.11\00:34:43.18 are instruments in the hand of God. 00:34:43.21\00:34:45.38 You're involved in a number of organizations, 00:34:45.41\00:34:48.32 but before I get down 00:34:48.35\00:34:49.68 to the Healing Music Foundation, 00:34:49.72\00:34:52.72 talk about your wife Rachelle. 00:34:52.75\00:34:55.69 Well, you know, all of us go through things, 00:34:55.72\00:34:59.79 some of them are more public than others, 00:34:59.83\00:35:02.83 some of them are more, more private than others. 00:35:02.86\00:35:05.70 And one of the greatest heart breaks, and sorrows, 00:35:05.73\00:35:11.81 and negative experiences in my life 00:35:11.84\00:35:14.18 is getting divorced over 12 years ago now. 00:35:14.21\00:35:18.55 And for people who have gone through that, 00:35:18.58\00:35:21.28 it can seem like you'd just rather die. 00:35:21.32\00:35:25.72 It's so painful, it's so destructive 00:35:25.75\00:35:28.59 because you're so much damage associated. 00:35:28.62\00:35:30.99 Now I understand 00:35:31.03\00:35:32.36 why in the bible over and over again, 00:35:32.39\00:35:33.90 it's says that God hates divorce. 00:35:33.93\00:35:36.36 Now its not a death sentence 00:35:36.40\00:35:38.23 but because when a family is split, 00:35:38.27\00:35:42.10 so many people are affected by it, 00:35:42.14\00:35:45.17 that's why there so much damage that can take place. 00:35:45.21\00:35:48.14 We dint have any kids, 00:35:48.18\00:35:50.25 but it was still extremely painful 00:35:50.31\00:35:51.85 for both of us. 00:35:51.88\00:35:53.21 And I got to the point where I said, 00:35:53.25\00:35:55.32 "I'm never getting married again." 00:35:55.35\00:35:56.75 I said that to my mother several years ago. 00:35:56.79\00:35:59.19 I said her, "Mom, I am just gonna marry my violin." 00:35:59.22\00:36:03.06 I said, "Look, she has nice curves 00:36:03.09\00:36:06.96 and only she talks back when I tell her to." 00:36:07.03\00:36:10.07 So I said to my mom, and she said, "Son, 00:36:10.10\00:36:13.47 you can do whatever you want but don't limit God 00:36:13.54\00:36:16.47 if He wants to do something different in your life." 00:36:16.50\00:36:20.01 And I get to the point where you know, 00:36:20.08\00:36:22.71 I had gone through so much pain 00:36:22.74\00:36:24.38 and I had such a void in my heart. 00:36:24.41\00:36:28.12 And I looked to feel that void, 00:36:28.15\00:36:30.99 but it was when I learned through allow God 00:36:31.02\00:36:33.76 to fill the empty spaces in my life 00:36:33.79\00:36:36.86 and in my heart that all of a sudden 00:36:36.93\00:36:40.33 He brought somebody into my life. 00:36:40.40\00:36:43.10 And I met her in 2000, in July, Washington DC, 00:36:43.13\00:36:47.24 nothing really happened actually 00:36:47.30\00:36:49.64 for nearly three years. 00:36:49.67\00:36:53.68 And then all of a sudden in November of 2012, 00:36:53.74\00:36:58.81 we reconnected 00:36:58.85\00:37:00.98 and nine months later we married. 00:37:01.02\00:37:03.42 So we're going on our third year of honeymoon 00:37:03.45\00:37:06.79 in July. 00:37:06.82\00:37:08.32 But I had a hard time 00:37:08.36\00:37:11.56 making that decision to get married 00:37:11.59\00:37:14.10 because Rachelle used to be 00:37:14.13\00:37:15.46 a professional women's football player. 00:37:15.50\00:37:17.40 Wow. 00:37:17.47\00:37:18.80 And I didn't even know that the sport existed 00:37:18.83\00:37:20.44 when I met her, you know. 00:37:20.47\00:37:21.97 And then I saw pictures of her 00:37:22.00\00:37:23.51 and I looked up her career, statistics, 00:37:23.54\00:37:26.44 she had been a running backer and a line backer. 00:37:26.47\00:37:29.24 In fact, she was recently voted into the Hall of Fame... 00:37:29.28\00:37:34.02 Football. 00:37:34.05\00:37:35.38 Yeah, to the women's Hall of Fame of her team. 00:37:35.42\00:37:37.72 That's her running. 00:37:37.75\00:37:39.09 The DCB, yes.
