I want to spend my life 00:00:01.46\00:00:07.47 Mending broken people 00:00:07.50\00:00:12.24 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.27\00:00:18.58 Removing pain 00:00:18.61\00:00:23.72 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.75\00:00:29.89 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.92\00:00:34.43 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.46\00:00:40.14 Mending broken people 00:00:40.17\00:00:45.67 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.71\00:00:51.28 Mending broken people 00:00:51.31\00:00:54.78 Hello, and welcome to another 3ABN Today program. 00:01:06.73\00:01:09.83 Thank you for joining us as always. 00:01:09.86\00:01:11.83 Thank you, Dr. Yvonne Lewis, for co-hosting today. 00:01:11.87\00:01:14.67 Thank you for having me. 00:01:14.70\00:01:16.04 And I always love having you here as a co-host. 00:01:16.07\00:01:18.37 But, today is a program I am sure, 00:01:18.41\00:01:20.71 even if I didn't asked, you would want to be on. 00:01:20.74\00:01:22.84 I would. 00:01:22.88\00:01:24.21 And can you tell our viewers why? 00:01:24.25\00:01:26.38 Because I love Tim Parton. Okay. 00:01:26.41\00:01:29.12 So our gust today, Brother Tim Parton. 00:01:29.15\00:01:31.62 So sweet. It's a privilege to be here. 00:01:31.65\00:01:34.06 And Pastor John Lomacang, of course. 00:01:34.09\00:01:35.49 Yes. 00:01:35.52\00:01:36.86 And so it's going to be a great program. 00:01:36.89\00:01:38.39 And our viewers that watch 3ABN, 00:01:38.43\00:01:41.46 I am sure they're going to have some idea 00:01:41.50\00:01:43.33 of what we're going to be talking about today, right? 00:01:43.37\00:01:45.43 When you have Tim, 00:01:45.47\00:01:46.80 we're going to be talking about music. 00:01:46.84\00:01:48.84 And, Tim, it is a privilege to have you here today. 00:01:48.87\00:01:52.01 And the good news, we're going to tell the folks 00:01:52.04\00:01:54.38 that Tim is now full time with 3ABN. 00:01:54.41\00:01:58.58 And you're not just in any capacity, 00:01:58.61\00:02:02.72 we put you in a capacity that is called, 00:02:02.75\00:02:05.99 we have a new network. 00:02:06.02\00:02:07.36 And what's the name of it? 00:02:07.39\00:02:08.72 Praise Him. Praise Him, right? 00:02:08.76\00:02:10.49 Like praise Jesus. Yes. 00:02:10.53\00:02:12.23 Praise Him radio or television, music channel, 00:02:12.26\00:02:16.97 and it's literally, of course we'll get to show it on, 00:02:17.00\00:02:20.00 you know, play it on radio, but it's going to be music. 00:02:20.04\00:02:22.74 We have 3ABN Radio, 00:02:22.77\00:02:24.71 but a music channel that's 24/7 music. 00:02:24.74\00:02:27.01 Right. 00:02:27.04\00:02:28.38 Now that's going to be a big job, 00:02:28.41\00:02:30.35 getting enough music to go 24/7. 00:02:30.38\00:02:33.45 But, hey, we thought that, when everybody told us 00:02:33.48\00:02:36.42 that when we started television too, 00:02:36.45\00:02:38.25 they said, "How you gonna do?" 00:02:38.29\00:02:39.62 We started with only a couple of hours, Yvonne. 00:02:39.65\00:02:41.82 We only had a couple of hours back in 1986, 00:02:41.86\00:02:44.69 we showed it a few hours, I think on Thursday evening. 00:02:44.73\00:02:47.70 Then we got a few more hours. 00:02:47.73\00:02:49.80 We finally went up like 12 hours a day. 00:02:49.83\00:02:52.23 And then before too long, 24 hours a day. 00:02:52.27\00:02:54.77 And of course, no channel shows 00:02:54.80\00:02:56.77 all new programming 24 hours, 00:02:56.81\00:02:59.17 you do blocks of maybe eight hours, 00:02:59.21\00:03:01.41 eight and eight and to do all of that. 00:03:01.44\00:03:03.48 But we have a lot of music already taped over the years. 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.18 But we're going to be doing a lot of new music. 00:03:07.22\00:03:09.05 Right. 00:03:09.08\00:03:10.42 And a lot of new programs 00:03:10.45\00:03:11.79 which we're going to talk to you today, 00:03:11.82\00:03:13.56 and Tim has a lot of dreams and ambitions. 00:03:13.59\00:03:16.49 And I believe they're going to come to fruition. 00:03:16.52\00:03:19.13 And that's why we have asked him 00:03:19.16\00:03:21.13 to be a part of this. 00:03:21.16\00:03:22.73 And music is something that's a universal language. 00:03:22.76\00:03:25.60 Yvonne, you would know that 00:03:25.63\00:03:26.97 probably as good as anybody sitting here, 00:03:27.00\00:03:29.50 because of your background in music. 00:03:29.54\00:03:31.77 And you have reached millions of people with your music. 00:03:31.81\00:03:35.38 Well, praise the Lord. 00:03:35.41\00:03:36.75 Music can reach where the spoken word can't. 00:03:36.78\00:03:40.32 It can get into the subconscious, 00:03:40.35\00:03:42.92 it can shape values. 00:03:42.95\00:03:44.52 I mean, that's why, 00:03:44.55\00:03:45.89 that's why the music that's out there, 00:03:45.92\00:03:47.92 some of it is so questionable. 00:03:47.96\00:03:51.69 And then we have spiritual music 00:03:51.73\00:03:53.93 which can lead us to Jesus, and that's what this is about. 00:03:53.96\00:03:57.67 Pastor John, you preach and sing. 00:03:57.70\00:04:00.14 Oh, yeah. 00:04:00.17\00:04:01.50 But you see result in souls for the kingdom by both way. 00:04:01.54\00:04:05.87 You know, as Yvonne said, 00:04:05.91\00:04:07.78 music doesn't ask for permission to come in. 00:04:07.81\00:04:10.38 You know, it's a like a lock, it's like a key to every lock. 00:04:10.41\00:04:13.75 You could be walking through the mall, 00:04:13.78\00:04:15.12 sitting in a restaurant, driving your car 00:04:15.15\00:04:17.49 and music is just conditioning you 00:04:17.52\00:04:19.12 to think a certain way or feel a certain way, 00:04:19.15\00:04:21.52 or respond a certain way without your permission. 00:04:21.56\00:04:23.86 And so, with that said, 00:04:23.89\00:04:27.16 Christian music could impress you 00:04:27.20\00:04:28.60 in so many ways about the Lord, 00:04:28.63\00:04:30.33 decisions you have to make, 00:04:30.37\00:04:31.97 choices you have to make during the day. 00:04:32.00\00:04:33.64 A single song could say 00:04:33.67\00:04:35.14 just a closer walk with the Him today, 00:04:35.17\00:04:36.57 so you know what, I need to get closer to Christ. 00:04:36.60\00:04:38.74 And sometimes you can hear a song played 00:04:38.77\00:04:40.21 as Tim so wonderfully does on the piano, 00:04:40.24\00:04:42.44 about the cross and you say, 00:04:42.48\00:04:44.05 boy, I think it's time for me to come back to the Lord. 00:04:44.08\00:04:46.48 And that is something that often said about music 00:04:46.51\00:04:49.55 last thing I listen to before I leave the house 00:04:49.58\00:04:52.62 tends to stay with me most of the day. 00:04:52.65\00:04:55.02 And so if you have music just sitting on the background 00:04:55.06\00:04:56.62 whether you're watching it 00:04:56.66\00:04:57.99 or listening to it on 3ABN radio or television, 00:04:58.03\00:05:01.63 it has a lasting impression, 00:05:01.66\00:05:03.00 it softens the soil, as we've seen 00:05:03.03\00:05:04.73 when I was in Heritage and seen with 3ABN. 00:05:04.77\00:05:07.14 It softens the soil 00:05:07.17\00:05:08.54 and the word comes in and closes the deal. 00:05:08.57\00:05:11.17 So praise the Lord for this. 00:05:11.21\00:05:12.54 Huge place and I'm excited about it and with a person, 00:05:12.57\00:05:14.98 I mean, Tim. 00:05:15.01\00:05:16.34 I mean, we'll find out, learn more about him. 00:05:16.38\00:05:18.58 But those who don't know him, just don't change the channel. 00:05:18.61\00:05:21.52 A lot of our viewers, I'm sure you know Tim Parton, 00:05:21.55\00:05:23.82 you've seen him. 00:05:23.85\00:05:25.19 Tim, you've played with numbers of groups 00:05:25.22\00:05:26.62 over the last several years. 00:05:26.65\00:05:27.99 You do a lot with the Gaithers 00:05:28.02\00:05:29.46 and now as I've seen you on the Homecomings. 00:05:29.49\00:05:31.59 Who are some of the groups you played piano for? 00:05:31.63\00:05:34.13 Well, right out of high school, 00:05:34.16\00:05:35.50 I started with the Lesters out of St. Louis. 00:05:35.53\00:05:36.87 Okay. 00:05:36.90\00:05:38.23 And they were wonderful family 00:05:38.27\00:05:40.27 for me to move from Kansas City, 00:05:40.30\00:05:42.14 I had lived a kind of a sheltered life. 00:05:42.17\00:05:43.77 Okay. 00:05:43.81\00:05:45.14 And so, but I moved to St. Louis 00:05:45.17\00:05:47.18 and played for the Lesters, then I moved to Nashville, 00:05:47.21\00:05:49.31 played for the Spear Family. 00:05:49.34\00:05:50.68 Oh, yeah. 00:05:50.71\00:05:52.05 Quite a name in southern gospel music. 00:05:52.08\00:05:54.48 And then I played for Jenna Pascal, Mike Speck. 00:05:54.52\00:05:58.55 He's a great choir leader, choir music person. 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.92 And then I was with Gold City, Legacy Five, Vestal Goodman. 00:06:02.96\00:06:09.16 Johnny Cash. No, not Johnny Cash. 00:06:09.20\00:06:13.13 And then I was with Jim Brady Trio. 00:06:13.17\00:06:15.84 Yeah. And did I mention Legacy Five? 00:06:15.87\00:06:18.54 Yeah, yeah. 00:06:18.57\00:06:19.91 I don't even remember who I was. 00:06:19.94\00:06:21.28 Basically, I can't keep a job, that's what I said. 00:06:21.31\00:06:25.18 Speaking of legacy, that's quite a legacy. 00:06:25.21\00:06:27.12 That's quite a legacy. It really is. 00:06:27.15\00:06:28.48 And Legacy Five or Legacy Period. 00:06:28.52\00:06:31.35 It's quite a legacy. 00:06:31.39\00:06:32.72 And God has blessed Tim to be able to play and sing. 00:06:32.75\00:06:37.73 I mean, he's just so multitalented 00:06:37.76\00:06:40.73 which is not to gash you up, 00:06:40.76\00:06:42.16 because it's a blessing from God. 00:06:42.20\00:06:44.43 But one of the things I love about Tim 00:06:44.47\00:06:46.74 is like when we go into the studio, 00:06:46.77\00:06:49.24 Tim, you can say, "Tim, I heard this song that, 00:06:49.27\00:06:53.91 it's just beautiful." 00:06:53.94\00:06:56.34 And you can comment to him or you can, 00:06:56.38\00:06:58.21 I've heard it and you play a little bit of. 00:06:58.25\00:07:00.52 No, I don't play. 00:07:00.55\00:07:01.88 I am done with playing on the record 00:07:01.92\00:07:03.39 or something on that CD. 00:07:03.42\00:07:04.99 And he hears it 00:07:05.02\00:07:06.86 and he can immediately just start playing it, 00:07:06.89\00:07:09.52 and he'll just write down the chords and the progressions 00:07:09.56\00:07:12.29 and it's just, it's such a gift. 00:07:12.33\00:07:14.90 You are just so gifted. 00:07:14.93\00:07:16.43 I'm very, very blessed. 00:07:16.46\00:07:18.73 I...it's, I don't even... 00:07:18.77\00:07:22.07 It's a natural gift. 00:07:22.10\00:07:23.44 Yeah, it's something that just, I didn't ask for it, 00:07:23.47\00:07:26.57 my mother prayed actually. 00:07:26.61\00:07:27.98 My mom prayed. 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.34 You started taking piano lessons 00:07:29.38\00:07:30.71 when you were two? 00:07:30.75\00:07:32.08 I took lessons when I was six and seven 00:07:32.11\00:07:33.58 and couldn't teach the teacher a thing. 00:07:33.62\00:07:36.89 So I said, enough of this. 00:07:36.92\00:07:39.69 Truly, truly, I'd would have 00:07:39.72\00:07:42.19 my teacher play the song back for me 00:07:42.22\00:07:44.73 and I would memorize the song then 00:07:44.76\00:07:48.10 and he caught me whenever I came back to lessons 00:07:48.13\00:07:50.97 and played in the wrong key. 00:07:51.00\00:07:52.63 So that's how... 00:07:52.67\00:07:54.80 So he told my parents, there was no real need for me 00:07:54.84\00:07:57.54 to take lessons anymore. 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.04 No reason, you know, it was just a waste of his time 00:07:59.07\00:08:01.21 and waste of my time, waste of their money. 00:08:01.24\00:08:03.18 So you stopped at seven? Yeah. 00:08:03.21\00:08:05.08 And then my parents, we had a family group 00:08:05.11\00:08:07.98 back in Kansas City, the Parton family. 00:08:08.02\00:08:10.22 And we started, 00:08:10.25\00:08:11.92 they let me start at eight playing for the family 00:08:11.95\00:08:15.86 and I would just chord along at the beginning 00:08:15.89\00:08:18.89 and then eventually I took over. 00:08:18.93\00:08:23.13 So on the chords, did you just hear chords? 00:08:23.16\00:08:25.97 How did you know to put chords together? 00:08:26.00\00:08:30.67 That's a great question. I don't know. 00:08:30.71\00:08:33.21 It's, honestly, people ask me how I do things. 00:08:33.24\00:08:36.58 And I know there are talent people there, 00:08:36.61\00:08:38.41 people who are talented in any area. 00:08:38.45\00:08:42.25 You know, if you can do a, if you can make a pie 00:08:42.28\00:08:44.79 without following a recipe, 00:08:44.82\00:08:46.39 I say, you know, that's your gift 00:08:46.42\00:08:48.26 because that's kind of the way I look at the way I do music. 00:08:48.29\00:08:51.76 I don't know how I do it. 00:08:51.79\00:08:53.40 I'm not amazed at myself, I'm amazed at God 00:08:53.43\00:08:56.97 that He would use me but, but, yeah. 00:08:57.00\00:08:59.63 I'm not, I was talking to my son 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.77 just this morning about being talented and he was, 00:09:01.80\00:09:05.44 he's going to audition for a choir at school. 00:09:05.47\00:09:08.84 Okay. 00:09:08.88\00:09:10.21 And I asked him what he was doing to prepare for that 00:09:10.25\00:09:13.25 because as you are... 00:09:13.28\00:09:15.38 If anybody is naturally talented, 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.85 it's easy just to step up 00:09:17.89\00:09:19.39 and say, well, I'm just going to do this 00:09:19.42\00:09:21.16 and not really prepare for anything. 00:09:21.19\00:09:23.63 And it's, I think it's really important that we, 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.46 no matter how good we are at something, 00:09:26.49\00:09:29.56 there are little nuances that we need to really perfect. 00:09:29.60\00:09:34.04 And to perfect our craft is an important thing, 00:09:34.07\00:09:37.54 and it's honoring God when we care enough 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.48 to give our very best. 00:09:40.51\00:09:41.84 So you didn't really learn chord, 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.45 say by watching your mother or somebody showing you, 00:09:43.48\00:09:46.98 you know, you got your majors, and your minor, 00:09:47.02\00:09:49.95 and augmenteds and diminishes, and nine thirteen. 00:09:49.98\00:09:53.52 I mean, how did you learn those if you didn't, 00:09:53.56\00:09:56.16 you didn't learn it and you're obviously at six and seven. 00:09:56.19\00:09:59.09 Did you hear them? 00:09:59.13\00:10:00.46 Did you play them first and then finally find out 00:10:00.50\00:10:03.00 what they were or did you say, I'm going to learn how to play, 00:10:03.03\00:10:06.13 that's a major at seven. 00:10:06.17\00:10:07.67 I'm gonna learn how to play. 00:10:07.70\00:10:09.04 Do you remember how that? 00:10:09.07\00:10:10.41 I remembered that, my dad is a guitar player 00:10:10.44\00:10:13.68 and so we listened to music all the time. 00:10:13.71\00:10:16.08 And we listen to Chet Atkins. 00:10:16.11\00:10:18.11 That's basically, that's all we listened to really. 00:10:18.15\00:10:20.38 So I thought that that's all there was. 00:10:20.42\00:10:22.45 And I didn't even know that songs had words 00:10:22.48\00:10:24.65 until later in life. 00:10:24.69\00:10:26.05 No, of course, for your viewers 00:10:26.09\00:10:28.62 Chet Atkins is a great guitar player. 00:10:28.66\00:10:29.99 Absolutely. 00:10:30.03\00:10:31.36 But I think that I just, I listen to songs 00:10:31.39\00:10:34.43 and I knew that songs were made up of those different chords. 00:10:34.46\00:10:37.77 And so because, and I always tell people, 00:10:37.80\00:10:41.80 if you want your child to get, to be a better piano player. 00:10:41.84\00:10:45.87 They're always wondering, how that works, 00:10:45.91\00:10:48.68 you know, how do I get my kid involved and interested in 00:10:48.71\00:10:51.45 to get better? 00:10:51.48\00:10:52.81 Give them a reason to play. 00:10:52.85\00:10:54.88 For me, it was the fact that my family sang, 00:10:54.92\00:10:58.12 and we sang three or four times a week. 00:10:58.15\00:11:00.62 So if I didn't want to get up in front of people 00:11:00.66\00:11:04.39 and embarrass myself, I needed to, you know, 00:11:04.43\00:11:06.56 know what I was doing. 00:11:06.59\00:11:07.93 So, you know, all that, we would pick songs 00:11:07.96\00:11:10.13 that we had heard on the radio, 00:11:10.17\00:11:11.50 southern gospel music was our style. 00:11:11.53\00:11:13.44 So we wrote out the song. 00:11:13.47\00:11:17.77 I don't even know if we wrote out the chords, 00:11:17.81\00:11:19.34 I don't remember, that's been so long ago. 00:11:19.37\00:11:21.24 But we would the songs consisted 00:11:21.28\00:11:24.71 of all these minor chords, and major chords, 00:11:24.75\00:11:27.02 and augmented chords, 00:11:27.05\00:11:28.38 and I guess I just sounded them out, 00:11:28.42\00:11:31.29 you know, like learning a new word, 00:11:31.32\00:11:32.85 you just sound it out. 00:11:32.89\00:11:34.22 Isn't that amazing? Oh. 00:11:34.26\00:11:35.59 It's such a gift. 00:11:35.62\00:11:36.96 And yet, you do it when it comes to sing... 00:11:36.99\00:11:39.59 Right. 00:11:39.63\00:11:41.00 Because you don't really think about that harmony. 00:11:41.03\00:11:44.27 You're not saying, okay, let's see, 00:11:44.30\00:11:46.07 I need to hit this third or I need to hit this. 00:11:46.10\00:11:48.74 You just all of a sudden, if Tim singing a melody, 00:11:48.77\00:11:52.44 you're just doing this harmony but you, at least, 00:11:52.47\00:11:55.34 I mean, I do and I don't know 00:11:55.38\00:11:57.71 where that comes from or how I know 00:11:57.75\00:11:59.98 what harmony note, how to follow it. 00:12:00.02\00:12:02.78 But it seems like it's a lot more people 00:12:02.82\00:12:05.75 are able to do that singing 00:12:05.79\00:12:07.82 than they are playing like what you do. 00:12:07.86\00:12:11.23 I mean, he's got eight fingers 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.09 and two thumbs going at all times. 00:12:13.13\00:12:14.80 I know, and his foot. 00:12:14.83\00:12:17.53 You ever see his foot at the piano? 00:12:17.57\00:12:18.90 Yeah, foot. Exactly. 00:12:18.93\00:12:20.27 Yeah, both on the whole, the whole body. 00:12:20.30\00:12:22.74 Tim, your entire body is involved in the song. 00:12:22.77\00:12:24.94 It is. Why not? 00:12:24.97\00:12:26.31 And speaking of that, what I also appreciate, 00:12:26.34\00:12:29.28 you alluded to it slightly. 00:12:29.31\00:12:31.31 You actually said it, he's got a wonderful singing voice. 00:12:31.35\00:12:33.88 Yes. 00:12:33.92\00:12:35.25 You know, there's a song that you wrote, 00:12:35.28\00:12:37.99 I'm blessed beyond measure. 00:12:38.02\00:12:40.82 You know, that song I remember, 00:12:40.86\00:12:42.29 when he played it at camp meeting once, I think, 00:12:42.32\00:12:44.16 he debuted at a camp meeting. 00:12:44.19\00:12:45.93 And people said, well, he's a great pianist, 00:12:45.96\00:12:49.33 he plays very well. 00:12:49.36\00:12:50.70 And then when he hit that, they said, why, 00:12:50.73\00:12:53.44 how many vocal albums does he have? 00:12:53.47\00:12:57.34 And it's not something you thought about 00:12:57.37\00:12:58.71 because you're playing for everybody else to sing. 00:12:58.74\00:13:00.88 But the gift is really, you know, 00:13:00.91\00:13:02.24 when you think about how God works, 00:13:02.28\00:13:03.61 every good and every perfect gift 00:13:03.65\00:13:05.65 comes from the Father in which there's no variation, 00:13:05.68\00:13:07.35 no shadow of turning. 00:13:07.38\00:13:08.82 So each of us in one respect or the other, 00:13:08.85\00:13:12.22 I like what you said, 00:13:12.25\00:13:13.72 the gift is given but you have to, 00:13:13.76\00:13:16.42 if you want to glorify God, you work on that 00:13:16.46\00:13:18.26 because you are representing the-- 00:13:18.29\00:13:19.76 You're not representing the hip-hop industry, 00:13:19.79\00:13:21.86 you're not representing the rock industry, 00:13:21.90\00:13:23.30 you're represent the King of the universe. 00:13:23.33\00:13:25.13 Why not be the best you can be. 00:13:25.17\00:13:26.50 That's right. 00:13:26.53\00:13:27.87 And what's nice about that is that Lord 00:13:27.90\00:13:29.24 didn't just give it to you but He anointed 00:13:29.27\00:13:30.74 and He's responsible for his betterment. 00:13:30.77\00:13:34.04 But you take your craft seriously 00:13:34.08\00:13:37.31 and that's what I really like about it. 00:13:37.35\00:13:39.55 When we worked on our album together, 00:13:39.58\00:13:41.72 you know, the hymns one, 00:13:41.75\00:13:43.12 I'd say, Tim, I want the beginning to sound 00:13:43.15\00:13:46.79 like a Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring 00:13:46.82\00:13:48.46 with a little bit of Christopher Cross mixed. 00:13:48.49\00:13:51.09 Unbelievable. Unbelievable. 00:13:51.13\00:13:53.66 And it is a hymn that's snug up on people, 00:13:53.70\00:13:55.56 they say, what is that? 00:13:55.60\00:13:58.07 And then I said, 'My Jesus...' 00:13:58.10\00:14:00.47 you know, you don't do that. 00:14:00.50\00:14:02.24 And I thought, wow, he actually concept to, you know, 00:14:02.27\00:14:06.74 I got the concept, threw at him and he took the ball 00:14:06.78\00:14:08.68 and hit a homerun and I thought, what a gift. 00:14:08.71\00:14:11.05 So I'm excited about 00:14:11.08\00:14:12.41 what we're going to talk about today. 00:14:12.45\00:14:13.78 Yeah. Thank you. 00:14:13.82\00:14:15.15 And that's interesting that you mentioned 00:14:15.18\00:14:16.52 about the hip-hop and the other. 00:14:16.55\00:14:17.89 Yeah. 00:14:17.92\00:14:19.25 Our focus is different, our audience is different. 00:14:19.29\00:14:22.52 But the fact that we live in a day 00:14:22.56\00:14:24.76 that with all of the voice and the, 00:14:24.79\00:14:27.70 what are some of the other... 00:14:27.73\00:14:29.06 American idol. 00:14:29.10\00:14:30.43 American idol, you know, those people 00:14:30.47\00:14:33.54 take their craft so serious. 00:14:33.57\00:14:35.24 Right. And it's so important. 00:14:35.27\00:14:37.34 You know, sometimes we think that as Christians we will, 00:14:37.37\00:14:42.18 this, we'll let our message be our strength. 00:14:42.21\00:14:47.18 But, and therefore the quality sometimes, in fact, 00:14:47.22\00:14:52.02 more often than not unfortunately suffers. 00:14:52.05\00:14:55.09 So I think it's important because Christ, 00:14:55.12\00:14:58.99 God deserves the very best 00:14:59.03\00:15:01.16 and because those other genres are going 00:15:01.20\00:15:04.27 so much for quality, it is vital for, 00:15:04.30\00:15:08.30 if we want people to pay attention to our message, 00:15:08.34\00:15:11.67 it's got to be in much prettier package, you know. 00:15:11.71\00:15:14.74 And it, you know, quality control is a touchy thing 00:15:14.78\00:15:18.81 because we don't want it all to be about make up, 00:15:18.85\00:15:22.52 and lights, and all the glamour that the world gives to it. 00:15:22.55\00:15:29.19 But it's got to be something that touches the ears 00:15:29.22\00:15:32.43 before it can get to the heart, I believe. 00:15:32.46\00:15:33.80 Absolutely. 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.26 That's why 3ABN and the music channel 00:15:35.30\00:15:38.67 Praise Him because we want something 00:15:38.70\00:15:40.60 that will reach people 00:15:40.64\00:15:42.70 who are used to listening to the voice 00:15:42.74\00:15:44.67 or listening to these other 00:15:44.71\00:15:46.91 that they all of a sudden turn to hear and say, 00:15:46.94\00:15:49.01 oh, boy, this isn't... 00:15:49.04\00:15:50.38 They're like, wow, you know. 00:15:50.41\00:15:51.78 And again, it's not giving the artists the credit, 00:15:51.81\00:15:54.72 we're giving God the credit. 00:15:54.75\00:15:56.55 And what you're saying is we need to work at it. 00:15:56.58\00:15:58.69 For sure. Absolutely. 00:15:58.72\00:16:00.06 How many times over, you know, 35 years ago, 00:16:00.09\00:16:02.46 back as far as 35 years ago we had a diesel greyhound bus, 00:16:02.49\00:16:06.43 my brother, my wife Kay, Melody's mother, 00:16:06.46\00:16:10.03 and we travel for three years and we, you know, weekends. 00:16:10.07\00:16:14.40 But we'd go places and we would, 00:16:14.44\00:16:16.47 we might be the what you call the guest singers. 00:16:16.50\00:16:19.97 But in between they had somebody that would say, hey, 00:16:20.01\00:16:23.45 will anybody want to just get up and sing a song? 00:16:23.48\00:16:25.78 And they would say, sister so and so. 00:16:25.81\00:16:27.92 "No, no, I'm not prepared." 00:16:27.95\00:16:29.78 "Well, why don't you come up?" "Well, okay." 00:16:29.82\00:16:31.59 And she reached into her purse and pull out all this music 00:16:31.62\00:16:34.02 and bring it to my brother, "Can you?" 00:16:34.06\00:16:36.12 "Well, I thought you weren't prepared," you know. 00:16:36.16\00:16:38.39 But then, when you hear it, you're like, now whoever, 00:16:38.43\00:16:41.66 you know, I understand, you know people say, well, 00:16:41.70\00:16:45.37 make a joyful noise into the Lord. 00:16:45.40\00:16:47.64 But everybody is not a preacher, 00:16:47.67\00:16:49.74 everybody is not a teacher, everybody is not a singer. 00:16:49.77\00:16:53.27 And so, sometimes it's best 00:16:53.31\00:16:54.94 that we stay in our certain fields. 00:16:54.98\00:16:57.78 I play guitar some but I know I'm not a really good guitar. 00:16:57.81\00:17:01.98 So you rarely see me. 00:17:02.02\00:17:03.79 And I don't play on any of our own, 00:17:03.82\00:17:06.82 the tracks that we do because that's something 00:17:06.86\00:17:10.33 that we have people who do that full time. 00:17:10.36\00:17:12.53 That's their job, they're great at what they're doing. 00:17:12.56\00:17:15.06 And so why do I need to get in and try to mess that up. 00:17:15.10\00:17:18.57 You're being honest with you. 00:17:18.60\00:17:19.93 And so, sometimes I'll do a guitar, 00:17:19.97\00:17:21.30 just a song here or so. 00:17:21.34\00:17:22.94 But really to understand our talents and our gifts, 00:17:22.97\00:17:26.24 we really need to. 00:17:26.27\00:17:27.61 John, he has a gift to sing and preach 00:17:27.64\00:17:29.91 but not a lot of preachers do. 00:17:29.94\00:17:31.55 But sometimes I hear those who preach, try to sing too, 00:17:31.58\00:17:35.12 and I am thinking, wonder why they don't leave 00:17:35.15\00:17:37.09 that to the singers and leave the preaching to the preachers. 00:17:37.12\00:17:39.65 Because you know... 00:17:39.69\00:17:41.46 That's, it's a very... 00:17:41.49\00:17:42.82 I mean, what we're talking about here is you, 00:17:42.86\00:17:44.19 you have to understand staying in tune with God is a lot, 00:17:44.23\00:17:47.70 it's so much a part of what we're talking about here today 00:17:47.73\00:17:50.37 because the world, when they do a song, 00:17:50.40\00:17:52.37 it's coated with production quality. 00:17:52.40\00:17:55.70 And they really, like you said, 00:17:55.74\00:17:57.07 they pull all the stops out, they wouldn't, 00:17:57.11\00:17:58.44 they wouldn't hesitate to bring in the best of the best, 00:17:58.47\00:18:00.41 of the best, the lights, the camera, 00:18:00.44\00:18:01.78 the action to the stage, the costumes, the lights, 00:18:01.81\00:18:04.15 everything is so choreographed. 00:18:04.18\00:18:05.71 So if you took, if you strip all that away, 00:18:05.75\00:18:09.02 you'd ask yourself, if you took away all the effects, 00:18:09.05\00:18:11.62 everything, if you strip all that away, 00:18:11.65\00:18:13.15 what would you hear? 00:18:13.19\00:18:14.52 And I remember once hearing an artist, 00:18:14.56\00:18:16.32 I won't mention the person's name, 00:18:16.36\00:18:17.99 sing at a memorial service for another famous musician 00:18:18.03\00:18:21.26 that had passed away. 00:18:21.30\00:18:22.63 And I thought, whoa, who is that? 00:18:22.66\00:18:26.43 And I heard them outside of all of that, 00:18:26.47\00:18:29.27 and I thought, man, 00:18:29.30\00:18:30.81 go back into whatever you were into 00:18:30.84\00:18:32.44 because that's horrible. 00:18:32.47\00:18:34.34 You know because that's why at 3ABN we often say, 00:18:34.38\00:18:36.51 when people send demos, we say, 00:18:36.54\00:18:37.88 don't send us the finished product, 00:18:37.91\00:18:40.12 give us a video or something you sing at church 00:18:40.15\00:18:42.08 or something that's just off the cuff because... 00:18:42.12\00:18:44.19 Sure. 00:18:44.22\00:18:45.55 So what we're talking here, what God has done through you 00:18:45.59\00:18:48.22 is that He has given you the gift 00:18:48.26\00:18:51.53 and you know 00:18:51.56\00:18:52.89 in your relationship with the Lord 00:18:52.93\00:18:54.26 where your strengths are. 00:18:54.30\00:18:55.93 And as Danny said, now Danny to me, 00:18:55.96\00:18:58.63 you are a dynamic guitarist. 00:18:58.67\00:19:00.74 Because you have to understand, you know, 00:19:00.77\00:19:02.34 I am saying this because I understand 00:19:02.37\00:19:03.71 where I am when it comes to guitar, you know. 00:19:03.74\00:19:05.91 So the comparisons are there, but we're not competing. 00:19:05.94\00:19:08.78 No. 00:19:08.81\00:19:10.15 That's the beauty of the whole thing, 00:19:10.18\00:19:11.51 the Christian world does not complete. 00:19:11.55\00:19:13.31 But we're all there for the glory of God. 00:19:13.35\00:19:15.28 So praise the Lord that the Lord did in your life. 00:19:15.32\00:19:18.02 Speaking of playing, why don't we have Tim, 00:19:18.05\00:19:20.66 you may be get up. 00:19:20.69\00:19:22.42 We'll have you do two, three songs. 00:19:22.46\00:19:24.06 Okay. 00:19:24.09\00:19:25.43 And then we'll come back and talk some more. 00:19:25.46\00:19:27.30 All right? Sounds good. 00:19:27.33\00:19:28.86 He's going to do, Yvonne, what's the name of this? 00:19:28.90\00:19:30.67 "In The Eye Of The Storm." 00:19:30.70\00:19:32.40 We'll have you do that first 00:19:32.43\00:19:33.77 and may be we'll go to A Quiet Place 00:19:33.80\00:19:35.37 and Everlasting God, 00:19:35.40\00:19:37.07 that sound all right? 00:19:37.11\00:19:38.44 Sounds fun. That truly was off the cuff. 00:46:54.78\00:46:56.34 There are a couple portions in there 00:46:56.38\00:46:57.71 that I had been working on 00:46:57.75\00:46:59.21 but when you asked me to come in here 00:46:59.25\00:47:01.95 and do some things, I said, let's just go for it. 00:47:01.98\00:47:04.99 You know, no better place to practice 00:47:05.02\00:47:08.16 than around the world, you know, right here on TV. 00:47:08.19\00:47:12.19 It's okay to be a professional in practice. 00:47:12.26\00:47:14.10 You know why I say that? 00:47:14.13\00:47:15.46 Because you talk to any doctor and he'll say, 00:47:15.50\00:47:18.33 "Oh, I've been practicing medicine for 40 years." 00:47:18.37\00:47:21.14 I'm like, "Well, I want a guy that's not practicing anymore." 00:47:21.17\00:47:24.44 You know I like the guy that's doing what they tell. 00:47:24.47\00:47:26.84 So it's okay that you're practicing the piano. 00:47:26.88\00:47:29.94 Thanks for your publicity. 00:47:29.98\00:47:31.31 After all of these years.
