of my life as a young person,

facing 10 to 20 years in prison.

And volunteers came in
at that point in my life.

struggled with drug addiction

I kneeled down in a
hospital room and I said,

"Dear, Jesus please help me,

And we began attending church
at that point, my wife and I,

and it was the
pastor's wife that had the idea

of making some
little gift packages

for the folk in
the local county jail

and I said that
would be a great idea,

that would be
phenomenal, because

I remember the volunteers
that reached out to me.

So approximately 19 years now,

we've been
making little packages

for men's and women's,

that are in jails and prisons

started with one county jail

of about 350 inmates.

And on the way home that
night, I told my wife, I said,

"Baby, you couldn't
give me a brand new Corvette

for the blessing I received."

And then so the next year,
we did two jail, then three,

then four, then
six, then 10, then 15.

And at some
point in that growth,

it continues to grow today,

but at some
point in that growth,

I think you
received a phone call.

It was a phone call, yes it was.

And I was like, okay, because

we always get calls in the jail

for people wanting
to bring in new programs

and bring in new programs.

But I actually
listen to what he said,

and he wanted to
bring in gifts and things.

And it was...

He wanted to know what we
would allow him to bring in.

So when he
started talking like that,

I knew that he knew some
structure of the facility.

But he also wanted to do a need,

a care for the inmates,

so therefore I knew that
he had a care for the inmates,

a true genuine care.

So at that point, I said,

"Okay, I think
I'm gonna try this."

sheriff at that time.

and what we wanted to try

to attempt to do and
that would also ease things

on the inmates in
the facility also,

because day to day stressors,

they need something
else to shield that.

We do actually care
about them as human beings.

And I thought that
this would be a good thing.

And so from that
approximately ten years ago now

that from that phone call,
this relationship has grown,

and it has been nothing
but a positive in our facility.

dreamed about as a young girl,

you thought, oh, boy, I want
to work in jails or prisons or

how did that come about?

I never thought about
working in a jail in my life.

At some point in time I had
wanted to do law enforcement.

And I did test,
I tested for state

and I also tested for our
local multi police department

and at a particular time,

I was on their list and
that was from 1993 to 1995.

Well, in the meantime while
you go through that process,

well, you have to
have income coming in,

and I had just recently
graduated from college also.

I had a family
and so we sat down,

and the chief from the Delaware
County Sheriff's Department

approached me one
weekend, and he says,

"I need you to
come to work for me."

And I thought,
"No, not in a jail.

I'm not coming into jail."

And we go back and forth
and then he told me, you know,

about some of the benefits

and everything
and I thought well,

okay maybe I can use
this until I get to the road,

because a lot of people do use
corrections as a stepping stone

to go to the road.

But I tested, got there
and after getting there,

things just started to click.

huge lawsuit at the time

you and how did that develop?

When we originally started
with Christmas Behind Bars,

it was adults.

And the adults came
in with the packages,

and spreading the word,

singing with the
inmates and everything

and we would
approximately have six,

groups that will come in at once

we can't just open up

and have everyone come down.

So it was the men.

So, one day I got
a call from Lemuel,

and he wanted to do
something with the academy

that they were doing,

and they were trying to teach
their youth on responsibility

and caring and what
giving actually means,

so that they could see,

what it's like to give
and actually get the response.

So at first, was a
little bit leery because

they are under the age of 18.

But I thought that we could
do this program successfully

with the amount of staff.

So we just stepped out and said,

That was a bit of a

students going from being
