I'd like to find 00:02:36.02\00:02:42.42 If I could have one dream 00:02:42.46\00:02:45.86 Come true before my eyes 00:02:45.89\00:02:52.07 More than a pot of gold 00:02:52.10\00:02:56.91 More than a pathway to the stars 00:02:56.94\00:03:02.11 More than anything I know 00:03:02.14\00:03:07.02 I want Jesus in your heart 00:03:07.05\00:03:11.72 If I could paint a picture in my mind 00:03:21.46\00:03:27.40 Of what I'd like to see 00:03:27.44\00:03:31.31 If I could take you once 00:03:31.34\00:03:34.78 Inside my deepest dream 00:03:34.81\00:03:41.18 More than a treasures glow the world can give 00:04:06.21\00:04:11.21 When He truly comes 00:04:11.25\00:04:13.75 To live in your heart 00:04:13.78\00:04:18.52 Why do you try to search for more 00:04:21.32\00:04:26.16 When He's what you're looking for 00:04:26.19\00:04:31.43 In your heart 00:04:31.47\00:04:35.64 So if I could have one wish 00:04:35.67\00:04:38.91 I know just what I'd like to find 00:04:38.94\00:04:45.61 And work that He has called us to do 00:05:51.08\00:05:52.65 would be very impossible. 00:05:52.68\00:05:54.98 Virtually impossible because, 00:05:55.02\00:05:56.38 really as Christ works in us 00:05:56.42\00:05:58.02 both to will and to do of His good pleasure. 00:05:58.05\00:06:00.96 Well, let's meet our guest at this time 00:06:00.99\00:06:03.12 and they are no strangers to our 3ABN Yes. 00:08:04.68\00:08:06.01 Oh, I must be shrinking, right, 00:08:06.05\00:08:07.65 if I'm closer to you then. 00:08:07.68\00:08:09.78 But a stately gentleman, your dad was also 00:08:09.82\00:08:11.69 very much involved in the work around the world. 00:08:11.72\00:08:13.66 A heart for evangelism 00:08:13.69\00:08:15.72 and I think the work that you both are involved 00:08:15.76\00:08:17.49 now as evangelism 00:08:17.53\00:08:19.23 but in a unique part of the world, China. 00:08:19.26\00:08:22.66 You know, if I thought about sending someone to China, 00:08:22.70\00:08:24.90 I would probably choose a Chinese. 00:08:24.93\00:08:27.94 But tell us your connection with China? 00:08:27.97\00:08:29.64 Well, I think the Lord has a sense of humor. 00:08:29.67\00:08:33.41 Audrey and I have often said, "You know why are we there?" 00:08:33.44\00:08:36.44 And He has His reasons. 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.45 But I certainly do not fit in. 00:08:38.48\00:08:40.12 I do not look Chinese 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.72 and I tower above most of my Chinese friends. 00:08:41.75\00:08:45.62 But, you know, He selects who He wants to do, 00:08:45.65\00:08:48.19 what He wants done. 00:08:48.22\00:08:50.19 And Audrey and I 00:08:50.23\00:08:51.83 many years ago said to the Lord, 00:08:51.86\00:08:54.00 "We are willing to go anywhere You want to send us." 00:08:54.03\00:08:56.93 And I remember, Audrey, 00:08:56.97\00:08:58.73 we really felt a pull to the Middle East, 00:08:58.77\00:09:02.60 but we got a phone call from the General Conference 00:09:02.64\00:09:05.34 saying, "Well, what about China." 00:09:05.37\00:09:06.88 And we said, 00:09:06.91\00:09:08.24 "Well, why not if God is calling us there." 00:09:08.28\00:09:10.31 I grew up speaking Spanish. 00:09:10.35\00:09:12.38 And so, I thought maybe the Lord would use us 00:09:12.41\00:09:14.55 in that kind of language group. 00:09:14.58\00:09:18.15 But I can just tell you right now for certain 00:09:18.19\00:09:20.39 there is no connection between Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. 00:09:20.42\00:09:23.73 No. Wow. 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.66 So, that we've been serving over there 00:09:25.69\00:09:27.70 like I said for 13 years. 00:09:27.73\00:09:29.50 And, yes, there are Chinese 00:09:29.53\00:09:31.73 but sometimes the Lord calls us or call people 00:09:31.77\00:09:35.77 to go and do certain things 00:09:35.80\00:09:37.67 and, and that's what we're doing. 00:09:37.71\00:09:40.71 Now, you're from a small family, 00:09:40.74\00:09:43.71 large family of your parents? 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.31 Right. How many siblings? 00:09:46.35\00:09:47.85 Well, my sister and I. 00:09:47.88\00:09:50.05 My sister lives in Florida and it's just the two of us 00:09:50.09\00:09:52.42 and we are glad to have three kids ourselves 00:09:52.45\00:09:56.22 who grew up in China 00:09:56.26\00:09:58.16 and one of them was made in China. 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.06 Maybe that's our tour. 00:10:01.10\00:10:04.40 That's right. No comment? 00:10:04.43\00:10:05.77 And you have to buy an extra Christmas gift now. 00:10:05.80\00:10:07.50 That's right, exactly. 00:10:07.54\00:10:08.87 Not that this program is during Christmas. 00:10:08.90\00:10:10.24 And your sons are in ministry also? 00:10:10.27\00:10:11.61 Yes. 00:10:11.64\00:10:12.97 Our oldest boy is pastoring 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.34 in British Columbia and in Kelowna 00:10:14.38\00:10:17.78 and our second boy is graduating 00:10:17.81\00:10:20.45 from theology program, gonna be married two days later 00:10:20.48\00:10:23.49 and gonna start working in the Oregon Conference. 00:10:23.52\00:10:25.45 So we're very blessed, 00:10:25.49\00:10:27.09 they've heard the call of the Lord too 00:10:27.12\00:10:28.66 and we always tell them, "Just go where the Lord leads." 00:10:28.69\00:10:33.06 Now, having to, having to move sorry, Hon, 00:10:33.09\00:10:35.10 having to move from the Upper Northwest 00:10:35.13\00:10:39.80 to go overseas, 00:10:39.83\00:10:42.94 did you disconnect how completely 00:10:42.97\00:10:44.67 did you disconnect from America? 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.94 Well, we have never disconnected 00:10:46.98\00:10:48.58 because our children are still in North America. 00:10:48.61\00:10:51.05 Real Estate. Yes, yes. 00:10:51.08\00:10:52.41 Well, we, we wanted the freedom to come back and forth 00:10:52.45\00:10:56.92 and be a part of our kids' lives 00:10:56.95\00:10:58.35 as often as a possible. 00:10:58.39\00:10:59.72 So we didn't really hang on to anything. 00:10:59.75\00:11:01.92 We're just over there and enjoying serving 00:11:01.96\00:11:05.53 and footloose some fancy-free for the most part 00:11:05.56\00:11:09.56 but our daughter is a freshman in college as well. 00:11:09.60\00:11:13.13 So we come back and spend time with her as we can. 00:11:13.17\00:11:17.14 But we have, we have no real estate so to speak of, 00:11:17.17\00:11:21.61 our home is in heaven 00:11:21.64\00:11:22.98 and we're perfectly happy with that. 00:11:23.01\00:11:24.98 And we keep telling our kids that, 00:11:25.01\00:11:26.48 "Hey, you know, we get to live with one of them 00:11:26.51\00:11:28.38 later on may be." 00:11:28.42\00:11:30.39 They used to think that was funny 00:11:30.42\00:11:31.79 now, they're starting to get little worried. 00:11:31.82\00:11:34.16 Like she say, "We have no real estate like us." 00:11:34.19\00:11:35.99 That's right. 00:11:36.02\00:11:37.36 We say, "We're living in tents." 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.23 So one is past tent, one is present tent. 00:11:39.26\00:11:41.76 Oh, I like that. That's a good one, I like it. 00:11:41.80\00:11:45.13 But fitting in this, in this culture now 00:11:45.17\00:11:48.67 because for us when we think of-- 00:11:48.70\00:11:51.77 if we got calls to go to China, we would instantly be nervous, 00:11:51.81\00:11:55.34 because we can't communicate, 00:11:55.38\00:11:56.71 but I understand you had a prior connection with China, 00:11:56.75\00:12:00.02 talk about that? 00:12:00.05\00:12:01.38 Well, when we first went over, we made a commitment 00:12:01.42\00:12:04.69 as much as possible to learn the language. 00:12:04.72\00:12:07.82 And of course, at that time my wife was primarily serving 00:12:07.86\00:12:12.63 and ministering to our family, we have three kids. 00:12:12.66\00:12:15.36 So she was not as involved in 00:12:15.40\00:12:18.50 out in the community or in the Chinese work. 00:12:18.53\00:12:21.70 So her Chinese didn't have the opportunity 00:12:21.74\00:12:23.71 to blossom as much, now it's really blossoming. 00:12:23.74\00:12:26.51 But, yeah, we both speak Mandarin Chinese. 00:12:26.54\00:12:29.18 You know, when you're there, 00:12:29.21\00:12:30.55 you're working with Chinese people, 00:12:30.58\00:12:32.41 when you go into China, you're preaching in Chinese, 00:12:32.45\00:12:35.35 you're talking in Chinese, you're meeting people, 00:12:35.38\00:12:37.39 government officials whatever it is in Chinese. 00:12:37.42\00:12:40.39 And, you know, I would, I would say that 00:12:40.42\00:12:43.79 wherever God calls you, don't be, 00:12:43.83\00:12:46.90 do not be intimidated by these barriers. 00:12:46.93\00:12:51.53 In other words, people say, "Well, I can't go do this 00:12:51.57\00:12:53.74 because, hey, you know, we just bought a house 00:12:53.77\00:12:55.40 or we just have this. 00:12:55.44\00:12:56.77 What do we do with this? What we do with that?" 00:12:56.81\00:12:58.47 Listen, you know, this world is not our home. 00:12:58.51\00:13:00.94 And "Oh, I don't speak Chinese." 00:13:00.98\00:13:02.94 Well, you know, 00:13:02.98\00:13:05.41 He will give you the ability to communicate. 00:13:05.45\00:13:08.38 And I have, had it happened multiple times 00:13:08.75\00:13:11.19 and I finish preaching and I say, 00:13:11.22\00:13:13.32 "Audrey, that really was not me 00:13:13.36\00:13:15.72 because my Chinese level is not that high." 00:13:15.76\00:13:18.96 But I was able to communicate at a much higher level. 00:13:18.99\00:13:21.06 That's I believe 00:13:21.10\00:13:22.43 the Holy Spirit working through us. 00:13:22.46\00:13:24.03 Why don't you give us a Chinese greeting? 00:13:24.07\00:13:25.67 That means basically, "Hello." 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.34 And but I could say to our viewers. 00:13:31.37\00:13:34.34 Wow! 00:13:48.12\00:13:49.46 What did you say? Break it down. 00:13:49.49\00:13:51.76 Basically I was saying, 00:13:51.79\00:13:53.70 "Thank you for watching this program. 00:13:53.73\00:13:55.63 And I pray the Holy Spirit will touch your heart 00:13:55.66\00:13:57.60 and that you will always pray for China." 00:13:57.63\00:13:59.93 Wow! Wow! That's amazing. 00:13:59.97\00:14:01.60 You did that well. 00:14:01.64\00:14:03.04 Well, actually you don't, I might have been ordering, 00:14:03.07\00:14:05.37 you know, stir fry, you all don't know. 00:14:05.41\00:14:07.54 I don't even know what you just said. 00:14:07.58\00:14:09.58 No, I-- 00:14:09.61\00:14:10.95 He did it, he did it right. 00:14:10.98\00:14:12.31 She could vouch for me. 00:14:12.35\00:14:14.05 Now, before we go into our video roll, 00:14:14.08\00:14:15.58 we want to kind of get into some of the, 00:14:15.62\00:14:17.69 some of the population and some of the statistics 00:14:17.72\00:14:20.59 because, we know that, 00:14:20.62\00:14:21.96 we talk about the work in America, 00:14:21.99\00:14:23.69 the work in China. 00:14:23.73\00:14:25.06 Just talk about that 00:14:25.09\00:14:26.46 what actually is happening there 00:14:26.49\00:14:27.83 as far as population and workers and-- 00:14:27.86\00:14:30.63 Well, China of course 00:14:30.67\00:14:32.10 has one to every six people in the world 00:14:32.13\00:14:34.67 living in its country 00:14:34.70\00:14:36.40 and the population is 1.4 plus billion. 00:14:36.44\00:14:39.97 Billion. And so it's a huge place. 00:14:40.01\00:14:42.94 In fact, one way that I try to put it 00:14:42.98\00:14:44.81 in perspective for people is that, 00:14:44.85\00:14:46.88 there is one city called Chongqing, China. 00:14:46.92\00:14:49.98 And in that one city, 00:14:50.02\00:14:51.95 there are more people living in that city 00:14:51.99\00:14:54.62 than any state in the United States 00:14:54.66\00:14:58.16 except for the state of California. 00:14:58.19\00:15:00.50 So California is the only state that has a population 00:15:00.53\00:15:03.83 greater than that one city. 00:15:03.87\00:15:05.70 So it's a huge place. 00:15:05.73\00:15:07.47 In fact, as a Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:15:07.50\00:15:10.07 we've identified China is that region 00:15:10.11\00:15:12.97 with the most un-reach people for Jesus. 00:15:13.01\00:15:16.01 There are more people in that one country 00:15:16.04\00:15:19.28 than any country combined of that don't know Jesus. 00:15:19.31\00:15:22.55 Now, is there a limit on children? 00:15:22.58\00:15:24.82 There used to be but they have identified that 00:15:24.85\00:15:28.26 having only one child really, really causes problems 00:15:28.29\00:15:31.53 with the culture, the dynamics. 00:15:31.56\00:15:34.23 You know, everybody only, 00:15:34.26\00:15:36.10 there are no cousins, no aunts or uncles. 00:15:36.13\00:15:38.70 So the, the government has loosened up on that 00:15:38.73\00:15:41.20 and now they can have more than one child. 00:15:41.24\00:15:44.61 They can have. 00:15:44.64\00:15:45.97 And also the whole retirement, they're aging, all of a sudden 00:15:46.01\00:15:48.81 you have one child taking care of two parents 00:15:48.84\00:15:52.45 and sometimes four depending on the situation. 00:15:52.48\00:15:54.55 Right, in the Chinese culture its, it's a beautiful thing 00:15:54.58\00:15:57.35 that the children take care of the parents 00:15:57.39\00:15:59.92 and the grandparents. 00:15:59.95\00:16:01.29 So suddenly, like Bob said, 00:16:01.32\00:16:02.66 you have one child who married one child, 00:16:02.69\00:16:05.59 and they have parents and grandparents 00:16:05.63\00:16:07.93 on both sides to take care of. 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.86 And it's caused a lot of, 00:16:09.90\00:16:11.33 a lot of difficulties in the culture. 00:16:11.37\00:16:14.27 And in fact, even with the labor, 00:16:14.30\00:16:16.60 there aren't as many people 00:16:16.64\00:16:17.97 to do the labor that's needed to be done. 00:16:18.01\00:16:19.47 But there are nursing homes, are they? 00:16:19.51\00:16:21.58 That is not the way although. 00:16:21.61\00:16:23.18 It's starting-- It's starting to happen. 00:16:23.21\00:16:25.61 Yeah. The west is leaking in. 00:16:25.65\00:16:27.78 Well, and the money, money, 00:16:27.82\00:16:30.02 money is taking over so what's happening is 00:16:30.05\00:16:31.95 what used to be a very family focus society, 00:16:31.99\00:16:35.69 now, you're finding more and more, 00:16:35.72\00:16:37.49 everybody in the family has to work. 00:16:37.53\00:16:39.26 And sadly most of the people who live in rural China 00:16:39.29\00:16:43.20 are leaving their kids with the grandparents 00:16:43.23\00:16:46.10 and traveling to the big cities in order to find work. 00:16:46.13\00:16:48.70 And so you have a lot of abandoned kids in China. 00:16:48.74\00:16:51.67 I mean, it's, it's a beautiful thing 00:16:51.71\00:16:53.27 to have grandparents obviously taking care of kids 00:16:53.31\00:16:55.98 but it's a real problem in China 00:16:56.01\00:16:58.01 where you will have children. 00:16:58.05\00:17:00.15 Actually, it's called "left behind children" 00:17:00.18\00:17:02.85 where the parents go into the cities 00:17:02.88\00:17:04.65 and they might not even come home 00:17:04.69\00:17:06.99 except for once a year if that 00:17:07.02\00:17:08.42 so these little children are growing up 00:17:08.46\00:17:10.46 without their parents 00:17:10.49\00:17:11.83 and often the grandparents can't provide 00:17:11.86\00:17:14.80 the love and the nurturing that's needed. 00:17:14.83\00:17:17.13 And it's a, it's a big challenge 00:17:17.17\00:17:18.50 right now in China. 00:17:18.53\00:17:19.87 And, in fact, we have been able to get involved 00:17:19.90\00:17:22.60 in attending to some of these kids 00:17:22.64\00:17:25.34 that have been left behind. 00:17:25.37\00:17:27.64 One of our, our goals right now in China 00:17:27.68\00:17:30.81 is to as much as possible 00:17:30.85\00:17:33.72 encourage the local Chinese churches 00:17:33.75\00:17:35.98 to look around them in the communities 00:17:36.02\00:17:37.85 in these cities and plant new churches. 00:17:37.89\00:17:40.49 Because China is becoming more and more secular, 00:17:40.52\00:17:43.12 materialistic, mammon, money is taking over. 00:17:43.16\00:17:48.63 So, it's becoming more and more difficult 00:17:48.66\00:17:50.10 to reach out with the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:17:50.13\00:17:52.97 So we're doing church planting and as Audrey mentioned 00:17:53.00\00:17:55.74 one of the teams that we've sent out 00:17:55.77\00:17:57.91 that has been sent out to do church planting 00:17:57.94\00:18:00.21 identified this need in the community. 00:18:00.24\00:18:02.04 Here all these young kids 00:18:02.08\00:18:03.98 left at home sometimes by themselves. 00:18:04.01\00:18:06.38 So this pioneer team, church planting team 00:18:06.41\00:18:08.98 went and started working 00:18:09.02\00:18:10.75 and bringing these kids together 00:18:10.79\00:18:12.42 and doing afternoon activities with them, 00:18:12.45\00:18:14.96 taking care of them, cooking with them. 00:18:14.99\00:18:17.46 Helping them with their laundry, 00:18:17.49\00:18:18.89 with their homework. 00:18:18.93\00:18:20.36 And then on Sabbath 00:18:20.40\00:18:21.73 bringing them together for Bible stories 00:18:21.76\00:18:23.67 and then what happens is the parent starts 00:18:23.70\00:18:25.57 they will thank you for taking care of our kids. 00:18:25.60\00:18:28.04 And they're using that as an evangelistic tool 00:18:28.07\00:18:30.61 to start a new church in this community. 00:18:30.64\00:18:32.97 So with the challenges 00:18:33.01\00:18:34.34 and there's some positive sides. 00:18:34.38\00:18:35.71 You know, we think of China 00:18:35.74\00:18:37.08 we say, well, as one person once said, 00:18:37.11\00:18:39.21 "If you take away all the things in your house 00:18:39.25\00:18:40.85 that are made in China, what would you have left? 00:18:40.88\00:18:42.75 Exactly. 00:18:42.78\00:18:44.12 But even though 00:18:44.15\00:18:45.49 it's a communist form of government, 00:18:45.52\00:18:47.56 there are a lot of positive things 00:18:47.59\00:18:48.92 that are happening in China. 00:18:48.96\00:18:50.29 Talk about some of those things? 00:18:50.33\00:18:51.66 Well, the fact is that the government of China 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.53 has raised last statistic I saw was 00:18:53.56\00:18:58.20 over 300 million people out of poverty 00:18:58.23\00:19:02.04 in the last 30 or so years. 00:19:02.07\00:19:03.61 Tremendous development and hats off to that. 00:19:03.64\00:19:08.44 In China there is, in Chinese there is a saying, 00:19:08.48\00:19:11.95 we call it crisis in Chinese 00:19:11.98\00:19:13.85 it's two characters Weiji and it's-- 00:19:13.88\00:19:17.19 the word crisis 00:19:17.22\00:19:18.82 comes from two different characters together 00:19:18.85\00:19:22.02 and the one character is danger 00:19:22.06\00:19:25.96 and the other character is opportunity. 00:19:25.99\00:19:28.76 And so, crisis is a danger but it's also an opportunity. 00:19:28.80\00:19:33.40 So while at the same time you have these, 00:19:33.44\00:19:36.37 these left behind children that Audrey was talking about, 00:19:36.40\00:19:39.57 we have an opportunity 00:19:39.61\00:19:41.28 to meet those needs like Jesus did. 00:19:41.31\00:19:43.58 Meet the needs, mingle with them, 00:19:43.61\00:19:46.51 care for them until they say, "Well, why are you doing this?" 00:19:46.55\00:19:49.55 And then point them to Jesus. 00:19:49.58\00:19:51.15 So, though the society is changing drastically, 00:19:51.19\00:19:54.16 it also provides opportunity for us 00:19:54.19\00:19:55.79 to meet those needs. 00:19:55.82\00:19:57.16 Wow. 00:19:57.19\00:19:58.53 I wanted to add to that the literacy rate 00:19:58.56\00:20:00.56 is very high in China and that is something 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.93 that we can give credit to the government 00:20:02.96\00:20:05.03 for doing its part to make sure that 00:20:05.07\00:20:07.54 everybody gets a chance to learn. 00:20:07.57\00:20:09.60 So that that's a very positive thing 00:20:09.64\00:20:11.37 and the infrastructure is fantastic. 00:20:11.41\00:20:13.17 Amazing, yeah. 00:20:13.21\00:20:14.54 Compared to when we first moved to China 20 years ago, 00:20:14.58\00:20:18.68 it's a different world 00:20:18.71\00:20:20.05 because we lived in China first, 00:20:20.08\00:20:22.12 the first time around for nine years. 00:20:22.15\00:20:24.22 And so, it's been very interesting to compare 00:20:24.25\00:20:26.65 that China with today's China. 00:20:26.69\00:20:29.46 Now, people think we hear names in Asia 00:20:29.49\00:20:31.43 like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, demographically 00:20:31.46\00:20:35.93 or I mean, I should say, 00:20:35.96\00:20:37.37 not demographically but location wise, 00:20:37.40\00:20:39.77 how are they-- how are they different? 00:20:39.80\00:20:41.60 Yeah, well, they're all part of the Greater China, 00:20:41.64\00:20:43.30 we worked, okay. 00:20:43.34\00:20:45.04 Taiwan is considered as part of China. 00:20:45.07\00:20:49.81 Of course, from 1949, 00:20:49.84\00:20:51.28 there's been some political differences 00:20:51.31\00:20:53.21 but everybody acknowledges it they're all part of China. 00:20:53.25\00:20:55.95 Hong Kong is part of China 00:20:55.98\00:20:57.32 since 1997 went back from the British. 00:20:57.35\00:21:00.29 And that's the Greater China. 00:21:00.32\00:21:01.66 But when you look at the population 00:21:01.69\00:21:03.43 that's where that word demographic comes in. 00:21:03.46\00:21:06.19 You know, that one Taiwan has 23 million people. 00:21:06.23\00:21:09.40 Okay, so it doesn't even have as much as that one city. 00:21:09.43\00:21:12.80 Hong Kong has seven million people 00:21:12.83\00:21:14.87 but the Greater China, 00:21:14.90\00:21:16.40 I'm talking about the country of China 00:21:16.44\00:21:17.77 has 1.4 billion people. 00:21:17.81\00:21:21.18 Yeah, Taiwan is an island off the east coast of China. 00:21:21.21\00:21:24.28 Okay. 00:21:24.31\00:21:25.65 And then Hong Kong is a little area 00:21:25.68\00:21:27.48 just south east of China. 00:21:27.52\00:21:29.78 Have you've been to Hong Kong before? 00:21:29.82\00:21:31.72 It's a little peninsula, 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.09 an island right off the southern part of China, 00:21:33.12\00:21:37.03 that's were our union offices are based and, 00:21:37.06\00:21:40.10 and we live there but our offices are just maybe, 00:21:40.13\00:21:44.03 you know, eight or nine miles 00:21:44.07\00:21:45.50 from the border with the mainland China. 00:21:45.53\00:21:47.70 How many employees? 00:21:47.74\00:21:49.30 In our office we have about 40. 00:21:49.34\00:21:51.91 Really, that many? Forty. 00:21:51.94\00:21:53.27 We have a very active media, 00:21:53.31\00:21:55.21 we have the Chinese Hope TV going there, 00:21:55.24\00:21:58.81 we have 3ABN I mean, Adventist World Radio. 00:21:58.85\00:22:04.55 Okay. 00:22:04.59\00:22:05.92 We're developing programs for Adventist World Radio 00:22:05.95\00:22:08.06 that comes out of Guam. 00:22:08.09\00:22:09.99 And then, is also the programs are put on podcast. 00:22:10.03\00:22:13.66 We have 11 million downloads a day. 00:22:13.70\00:22:16.93 A day. A day. 00:22:16.97\00:22:18.30 What? 00:22:18.33\00:22:19.67 Yes, 11 million downloads a day 00:22:19.70\00:22:21.07 from our radio programmings, yeah. 00:22:21.10\00:22:23.81 That's amazing. You gave us a hint. 00:22:23.84\00:22:25.61 Maybe we should have 3ABN Chinese. 00:22:25.64\00:22:28.14 Hey, listen. 00:22:28.18\00:22:29.51 Let's talk we need every vehicle 00:22:29.54\00:22:33.38 and method we can to reach Chinese people 00:22:33.42\00:22:37.02 with the gospel of Jesus Christ. 00:22:37.05\00:22:38.62 So, let's make a date. 00:22:38.65\00:22:39.99 We've got to find a way to have 3ABN Chinese. 00:22:40.02\00:22:43.39 And the reality is we have no idea 00:22:43.43\00:22:46.19 who is watching and listening to what in China. 00:22:46.23\00:22:49.36 And so, we just see these as means of planting seeds. 00:22:49.40\00:22:52.07 That's right. 00:22:52.10\00:22:53.44 And who knows, I mean internet evangelism. 00:22:53.47\00:22:56.10 radio, TV, all of these things. 00:22:56.14\00:22:58.37 I mean everybody in China has a Smartphone, 00:22:58.41\00:23:01.98 and they're downloading these apps. 00:23:02.01\00:23:03.75 So we are just trying to put it out there 00:23:03.78\00:23:06.92 and let God make the difference. 00:23:06.95\00:23:08.35 Just to give you an example, 00:23:08.38\00:23:09.72 one of the things the Union has done 00:23:09.75\00:23:11.15 in the last years is to-- 00:23:11.19\00:23:13.22 over the last 10 years they've been translating 00:23:13.25\00:23:15.96 the 10 volume Bible commentary series into Chinese. 00:23:15.99\00:23:19.66 I mean, it's a pretty big project. 00:23:19.69\00:23:21.36 And we're thankful for some of our retired pastors 00:23:21.40\00:23:23.87 that have dedicated themselves. 00:23:23.90\00:23:25.53 But instead of taking 00:23:25.57\00:23:26.90 that investment of time and money and simply say, 00:23:26.94\00:23:29.70 well, we're gonna print it, okay, 00:23:29.74\00:23:32.37 which would have been very expensive, 00:23:32.41\00:23:34.21 we made the decision to put it for free 00:23:34.24\00:23:37.08 and we made an app and we put it on the internet. 00:23:37.11\00:23:40.12 A free download app and people can use 00:23:40.15\00:23:43.89 all of the Bible commentary. 00:23:43.92\00:23:45.52 Within one year we had 51,000 downloads of that app 00:23:45.55\00:23:50.86 and are using that. 00:23:50.89\00:23:52.69 So, the numbers are always exponential 00:23:52.73\00:23:56.13 when you, when you get to China and... 00:23:56.16\00:23:58.47 Now, you have a video roll. Yes. 00:23:58.50\00:24:01.04 That's kind of give us an overview of the work 00:24:01.07\00:24:03.30 and the things that are happening in China, 00:24:03.34\00:24:04.67 lead us into that quickly? 00:24:04.71\00:24:06.04 Surely. 00:24:06.07\00:24:07.41 This video is basically gonna take you 00:24:07.44\00:24:08.84 on a bit of a history of how the work started in China 00:24:08.88\00:24:11.75 by a Layman Abram La Rue in 1888. 00:24:11.78\00:24:15.78 It's gonna kind of share with you 00:24:15.82\00:24:18.35 the work as it progressed through the pre-communist time 00:24:18.39\00:24:22.59 and then what happened after that 00:24:22.62\00:24:24.63 especially during the cultural revolution. 00:24:24.66\00:24:26.59 And then, it's gonna talk about what has happened since then. 00:24:26.63\00:24:29.30 And I think it's gonna give us, 00:24:29.33\00:24:30.77 you know, five, six minutes a good overview 00:24:30.80\00:24:33.77 of where we are and where we came from. 00:24:33.80\00:24:35.54 Okay, well let's go to the videotape. 00:24:35.57\00:24:36.91 Okay. 00:24:36.94\00:24:38.27 When we say "To grow God's Kingdom" 00:24:46.18\00:24:48.82 we mean to expand the plan of salvation 00:24:48.85\00:24:51.89 among millions of Chinese 00:24:51.92\00:24:53.59 living in the Great China region. 00:24:53.62\00:24:56.76 The Adventist ministry in China began with 00:24:56.79\00:24:59.19 lay missionary Abram La Rue 127 years ago in 1888. 00:24:59.23\00:25:05.83 The first official missionary, 00:25:05.87\00:25:07.67 J.N. Anderson was sent to China in 1902. 00:25:07.70\00:25:12.14 In 1906, Guo Ziying became 00:25:12.17\00:25:14.81 the first ordained Chinese Adventist minister. 00:25:14.84\00:25:17.91 Later on Pastor Hong Zijie, 00:25:17.95\00:25:20.52 a Baptist minister joined the Adventist ministry. 00:25:20.55\00:25:24.65 For half a century Adventist leaders and members 00:25:24.69\00:25:28.02 lived through difficult historical periods, 00:25:28.06\00:25:30.76 withstanding countless regime changes, 00:25:30.79\00:25:33.36 political unrest and brutal military conflicts 00:25:33.40\00:25:36.77 including the Japanese invasion and the civil war. 00:25:36.80\00:25:40.84 Despite the unstable social environment, 00:25:40.87\00:25:43.61 by 1950 the China Division 00:25:43.64\00:25:46.14 along with its seven union conferences, 00:25:46.17\00:25:48.84 were supervising 276 churches and 21,000 members. 00:25:48.88\00:25:54.85 It also operated many schools, 00:25:54.88\00:25:57.12 ranging from elementary level to college level, 00:25:57.15\00:26:00.36 13 hospitals and Signs of 00:26:00.39\00:26:02.32 the Times Publishing Association. 00:26:02.36\00:26:05.39 With the backdrop of the ongoing Korean War, 00:26:05.43\00:26:08.36 the Adventist church went through the Accusation Movement 00:26:08.40\00:26:11.67 during which many ordinary citizens 00:26:11.70\00:26:13.90 were wrongfully accused of being foreign spies. 00:26:13.94\00:26:17.34 In 1951, the communist government 00:26:17.37\00:26:20.41 confiscated all churches entities. 00:26:20.44\00:26:23.01 In 1958, China entered a period called 00:26:23.04\00:26:26.51 "The Great Leap Forward." 00:26:26.55\00:26:28.38 Christian churches were annexed 00:26:28.42\00:26:30.12 in order to eliminate denominations. 00:26:30.15\00:26:32.82 Starting in 1966, the Cultural Revolution 00:26:32.85\00:26:36.32 which lasted ten years, 00:26:36.36\00:26:37.96 inflicted another round of destruction 00:26:37.99\00:26:40.30 to all religions. 00:26:40.33\00:26:42.16 Bibles were torched in public, 00:26:42.20\00:26:44.27 churches were converted to factories, 00:26:44.30\00:26:46.67 schools and daycare centers. 00:26:46.70\00:26:49.00 Many Christian ministers and organizational staff 00:26:49.04\00:26:52.11 were sent to labor camps for "re-education." 00:26:52.14\00:26:55.08 Some were thrown in jail. 00:26:55.11\00:26:57.28 It was the darkest chapter 00:26:57.31\00:26:59.01 in the Christian history in China. 00:26:59.05\00:27:02.12 Even during the most difficult times, 00:27:02.15\00:27:04.92 the Lord was with His faithful followers. 00:27:04.95\00:27:07.96 Many Adventists suffered for their faith. 00:27:07.99\00:27:10.43 But their perseverance kept the Church alive. 00:27:10.46\00:27:14.30 When China entered a new era, 00:27:14.33\00:27:16.56 the Christian churches sprang 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.17 like bamboo-shoots across the country. 00:27:18.20\00:27:21.34 Today, in 2015 the membership of 00:27:21.37\00:27:24.41 the Chinese Adventist Church reached 410,000. 00:27:24.44\00:27:28.98 The number of churches and meeting places 00:27:29.01\00:27:31.41 is between four and five thousand. 00:27:31.45\00:27:33.98 More than three million books of Spirit of Prophecy 00:27:34.02\00:27:37.25 have been printed and distributed. 00:27:37.29\00:27:39.99 From 1958 to 1966, 00:27:40.02\00:27:43.36 The Adventist church have gone through a great test. 00:27:43.39\00:27:46.56 In Shanghai, 00:27:46.59\00:27:47.93 where the China Division office was located, 00:27:47.96\00:27:50.30 more than 20 ministers, elders and deacons, 00:27:50.33\00:27:53.13 ministry directors and lay persons, 00:27:53.17\00:27:55.47 were sent to lay the camps for "re-education." 00:27:55.50\00:27:58.61 None of them betrayed their faith. 00:27:58.64\00:28:00.68 They went straight back 00:28:00.71\00:28:02.04 to the business of growing God's kingdom 00:28:02.08\00:28:04.18 when they were released. 00:28:04.21\00:28:05.95 Years later, 00:28:05.98\00:28:07.32 they were exonerated by the Chinese government. 00:28:07.35\00:28:09.92 You may have heard of some of them 00:28:09.95\00:28:11.75 such as David Lin, 00:28:11.79\00:28:14.62 Zheng Zhaorong, Yang Dawei, 00:28:14.66\00:28:21.40 Jiao Hongzhi, and Robert Wong. 00:28:21.43\00:28:27.87 There were many dedicated Adventists 00:28:27.90\00:28:30.07 living in other places as well. 00:28:30.11\00:28:32.47 We remember those who became martyrs 00:28:32.51\00:28:34.38 for the kingdom including Sun Qinfu. 00:28:34.41\00:28:39.81 Currently, there are several cities 00:28:39.85\00:28:41.48 and regions in China 00:28:41.52\00:28:43.02 which boast of having more than 1,000 Adventists 00:28:43.05\00:28:46.25 worshiping on any given Sabbath. 00:28:46.29\00:28:49.19 The cities of Wuxi, Wenzhou, Shenyang, Xi'an 00:28:49.22\00:28:54.70 and the regions around Dagushan, Gongzhuling, 00:28:54.73\00:28:59.10 northern Guangdong Province are prominent locations. 00:28:59.13\00:29:03.20 The churches at these locations started small. 00:29:03.24\00:29:06.44 Their development testifies to God's glory and power. 00:29:06.47\00:29:10.38 All the church leaders led with good examples 00:29:10.41\00:29:13.01 of true dedication and sacrifice. 00:29:13.05\00:29:15.88 The congregations responded with faithful witnessing. 00:29:15.92\00:29:19.75 From a few to several thousand, 00:29:19.79\00:29:22.12 they steadily grow God's kingdom. 00:29:22.16\00:29:25.86 "But that on the good ground are they, 00:29:25.89\00:29:28.16 which in an honest and good heart, 00:29:28.20\00:29:30.43 having heard the word, 00:29:30.47\00:29:31.93 keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience." 00:29:31.97\00:29:35.64 Jesus rightfully describes how His Kingdom grows. 00:29:35.67\00:29:40.14 From the era of East Asia Association 00:29:40.18\00:29:42.91 to today's Chinese Union Mission, 00:29:42.94\00:29:45.31 every outreach method, literature evangelism, 00:29:45.35\00:29:48.78 radio broadcasting, disciple training, 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.92 internet and TV ministries, correspondence Bible schools, 00:29:51.95\00:29:56.93 Griggs University Asia, exchanges and visits, 00:29:56.96\00:30:00.50 have been used to sow the seeds and to nurture the hearts. 00:30:00.53\00:30:04.87 With our own eyes we see that 00:30:04.90\00:30:06.74 the seeds have grown and born fruit in China! 00:30:06.77\00:30:10.64 This is a very interesting video 00:30:24.39\00:30:25.72 that we just saw about China, 00:30:25.75\00:30:27.09 the history, the past, the present 00:30:27.12\00:30:29.22 and also a reflection on the direction of the future. 00:30:29.26\00:30:32.36 Kind of recap in a nutshell because, 00:30:32.39\00:30:33.96 you know, you see that church, 00:30:34.00\00:30:36.33 one of the things that we talked about 00:30:36.36\00:30:37.70 as we were watching, this is how the church grew 00:30:37.73\00:30:40.80 when it went in a time of difficulty. 00:30:40.84\00:30:44.87 We use a phrase underground so to speak. 00:30:44.91\00:30:47.01 The way, the way I would recap 00:30:47.04\00:30:48.54 this video is that it took one man 00:30:48.58\00:30:51.01 whose name was Abram La Rue who by faith went to China. 00:30:51.05\00:30:55.02 In fact, he had applied to the General Conference 00:30:55.05\00:30:58.45 of Seventh-day Adventist to be a missionary to China 00:30:58.49\00:31:01.29 and they said, "Sorry you're too old." 00:31:01.32\00:31:04.19 But long story short, he ended up in China 00:31:04.23\00:31:07.30 and he actually died in Hong Kong 00:31:07.33\00:31:10.47 and he's buried right near to where we live. 00:31:10.50\00:31:14.24 But he started to work and things grew 00:31:14.27\00:31:18.17 and through difficult times, the church grew all the more. 00:31:18.21\00:31:22.21 In fact, our church had to go underground for many years 00:31:22.24\00:31:25.95 and then in the '70s and in the early '80s 00:31:25.98\00:31:29.32 the church started to blossom again 00:31:29.35\00:31:31.05 and we went from a membership of 20,000 as the video stated 00:31:31.09\00:31:35.02 when it went underground to over 200,000 00:31:35.06\00:31:37.93 and now a membership of over 400,000 in China. 00:31:37.96\00:31:41.63 So, I think this video says to me that God has a plan. 00:31:41.66\00:31:45.27 He's in charge, 00:31:45.30\00:31:46.63 and no matter what happens, He will grow his church. 00:31:46.67\00:31:49.10 Amen. That's right. 00:31:49.14\00:31:50.47 Amen. 00:31:50.51\00:31:51.84 There's an article, article you showed me, 00:31:51.87\00:31:53.21 I want you to talk about this briefly 00:31:53.24\00:31:54.58 when we were sitting down eating some Indian food. 00:31:54.61\00:31:56.11 Oh, yeah. 00:31:56.14\00:31:57.48 We were eating Indian food and we looked at 00:31:57.51\00:31:59.21 the Adventist Review Magazine, 00:31:59.25\00:32:01.25 and we saw this beautiful hospital. 00:32:01.28\00:32:03.95 Yes. In China, was it Hong Kong? 00:32:03.99\00:32:06.25 Well, it's in Hong Kong actually, yeah. 00:32:06.29\00:32:08.49 We praise the Lord. 00:32:08.52\00:32:10.56 In Hong Kong, we have two hospitals that 00:32:10.59\00:32:13.26 we call it Hong Kong Adventist Hospital. 00:32:13.29\00:32:15.06 One is on the island, and then the other one is 00:32:15.10\00:32:17.13 in a community called Tsuen Wan. 00:32:17.17\00:32:19.13 These were started by Dr. Harry Miller, 00:32:19.17\00:32:22.00 what were they called the China doctor, 00:32:22.04\00:32:23.54 our early, one of our pioneers in China. 00:32:23.57\00:32:27.01 And when he, they had to leave China. 00:32:27.04\00:32:29.61 He started many Chinese hospitals. 00:32:29.64\00:32:32.51 But then when they had to leave China, 00:32:32.55\00:32:33.88 they came to Hong Kong 00:32:33.92\00:32:35.25 and started these two hospitals. 00:32:35.28\00:32:36.62 For Tsuen Wan hospital is built in 1964, 00:32:36.65\00:32:39.39 100 beds or so and it had literally outgrown itself 00:32:39.42\00:32:44.13 way many years ago but-- 00:32:44.16\00:32:45.86 Now, when Bob says, Tsuen Wan Hospital, 00:32:45.89\00:32:48.16 that's a hospital in a certain area 00:32:48.20\00:32:50.13 of Hong Kong called Tsuen Wan. 00:32:50.17\00:32:51.67 Like the neighborhood... 00:32:51.70\00:32:53.03 Yeah, a community there. 00:32:53.07\00:32:54.40 Community but we had, 00:32:54.44\00:32:56.94 we were always full, we had a waiting list. 00:32:56.97\00:32:59.07 Maybe we just needed to grow that hospital. 00:32:59.11\00:33:01.28 But God provided a period of about seven years. 00:33:01.31\00:33:05.51 When the Hong Kong government opened the doors 00:33:05.55\00:33:07.65 for mainland Chinese mothers to come to Hong Kong 00:33:07.68\00:33:11.09 if they wanted to, to have their babies 00:33:11.12\00:33:13.99 and many Chinese want to come to Hong Kong 00:33:14.02\00:33:17.26 to give birth to their children because-- 00:33:17.29\00:33:18.99 They feel it's safer. Yeah. 00:33:19.03\00:33:20.60 And they can get also resident cards 00:33:20.63\00:33:22.26 from Hong Kong. 00:33:22.30\00:33:23.63 Well, the hospitals in Hong Kong were inundated 00:33:23.67\00:33:26.84 and so were our two hospitals. 00:33:26.87\00:33:28.60 And that allowed us to have tremendous income 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.64 during those seven years. 00:33:31.67\00:33:33.07 The leadership at the time set aside money. 00:33:33.11\00:33:35.98 And as you saw and I think 00:33:36.01\00:33:37.75 we have some pictures of that new hospital. 00:33:37.78\00:33:39.95 We just were able to bring, 00:33:39.98\00:33:43.22 have our grand opening in November 00:33:43.25\00:33:45.45 and we are slowly but surely moving. 00:33:45.49\00:33:47.72 We've gone from 100 beds, 00:33:47.76\00:33:49.56 when it's fully utilized will have 450 beds. 00:33:49.59\00:33:52.93 It's a 25 story building state-of-the-art 00:33:52.96\00:33:57.10 and the God provided the funds for us to do. 00:33:57.13\00:33:59.40 There's the older hospital 00:33:59.43\00:34:00.77 that four or five stories building in front 00:34:00.80\00:34:04.21 and behind it is that new 25 stories hospital. 00:34:04.24\00:34:08.01 And what's exciting it is that 00:34:08.04\00:34:09.61 it's the only private hospital in that area of Hong Kong. 00:34:09.64\00:34:13.15 And it's so overtly Christian too, 00:34:13.18\00:34:16.52 that it will make an impact on the community there. 00:34:16.55\00:34:19.22 But we call it a miracle hospital. 00:34:19.25\00:34:20.86 It is totally and right when you walk in the lobby, 00:34:20.89\00:34:24.39 it's very clear this Adventist, we have our chapel right there. 00:34:24.43\00:34:27.80 And on the first floor we have our, 00:34:27.83\00:34:30.00 an entire church that meets in the hospital. 00:34:30.03\00:34:32.47 We call it the "Mountain View Church." 00:34:32.50\00:34:34.34 Just this last week, I got a note from, 00:34:34.37\00:34:36.71 from our chaplain saying 00:34:36.74\00:34:38.07 that one of the families who they were visiting with 00:34:38.11\00:34:41.08 came brought their sick person in 00:34:41.11\00:34:43.68 went to church on Sabbath 00:34:43.71\00:34:45.51 in our hospital church, we call it. 00:34:45.55\00:34:48.28 We often have hospital churches, 00:34:48.32\00:34:49.65 but I'm talking about in the hospital, 00:34:49.68\00:34:51.79 we have our church. 00:34:51.82\00:34:53.15 You know, what's nice about that is, 00:34:53.19\00:34:54.52 you can't take evangelism to the community 00:34:54.56\00:34:56.16 but they could come to you. 00:34:56.19\00:34:57.53 That's right. 00:34:57.56\00:34:58.89 And a medical, 00:34:58.93\00:35:00.26 we talk about health is an entering wedge, 00:35:00.30\00:35:03.26 the health message and so here you are, 00:35:03.30\00:35:05.43 it's amazing that you could have a hospital right there 00:35:05.47\00:35:07.20 and which you said it's obvious 00:35:07.24\00:35:09.47 that it's a Christian institution. 00:35:09.50\00:35:10.91 And the government 00:35:10.94\00:35:12.27 because of the great benefits to society 00:35:12.31\00:35:14.11 they're not really saying, we need to shut this down. 00:35:14.14\00:35:15.61 Oh, no, no, in Hong Kong we have that openness 00:35:15.64\00:35:17.98 to be able to do that. 00:35:18.01\00:35:19.95 And the challenges were across the border in mainland China, 00:35:19.98\00:35:23.45 but Hong Kong, we praise the Lord, 00:35:23.49\00:35:25.12 the government is very supportive of what we're doing. 00:35:25.15\00:35:28.62 Yeah, even though Hong Kong was returned 00:35:28.66\00:35:30.93 by the British to mainland China in 1997, 00:35:30.96\00:35:34.90 it's still its own little system 00:35:34.93\00:35:38.30 as far as government rule. 00:35:38.33\00:35:39.77 So there are lot of freedoms in, 00:35:39.80\00:35:42.07 in Hong Kong that you might not have in mainland China. 00:35:42.10\00:35:44.37 Tell us about the youth there, the youth in China? 00:35:44.41\00:35:47.51 Well, listen. 00:35:47.54\00:35:48.88 It is amazing, when you get together with young people, 00:35:48.91\00:35:52.85 in September I went and did a training and I would say, 00:35:52.88\00:35:57.12 probably of leadership in one particular region. 00:35:57.15\00:36:00.06 And I would say, probably 00:36:00.09\00:36:01.42 at least 50 to 60 percent of all the leaders 00:36:01.46\00:36:04.46 we would call young adults or young married. 00:36:04.49\00:36:08.20 They're leading the church. 00:36:08.23\00:36:09.56 Now at the same time one of the challenges in China 00:36:09.60\00:36:12.50 is that you have this aging of society. 00:36:12.53\00:36:16.77 And so many of our church members are elderly-- 00:36:16.81\00:36:19.87 sometimes especially in the rural churches, 00:36:19.91\00:36:22.38 all the youth have left and have gone to the cities. 00:36:22.41\00:36:26.31 And this is a challenge that we're facing there. 00:36:26.35\00:36:29.18 So, how you, so how are you-- 00:36:29.22\00:36:30.99 let me use the word here loosely evangelizing 00:36:31.02\00:36:33.72 because you have on Hong Kong side no hindrance, 00:36:33.76\00:36:37.49 but then you have in mainland China. 00:36:37.53\00:36:40.46 Based on obviously the religion, 00:36:40.50\00:36:42.20 what is the predominant religion? 00:36:42.23\00:36:45.03 In China, it's Buddhism. Okay. 00:36:45.07\00:36:47.64 But honestly that is only a name, 00:36:47.67\00:36:50.84 it's atheism. 00:36:50.87\00:36:52.74 It's atheism and materialism and humanism, 00:36:52.77\00:36:55.81 most Chinese people do not believe in God. 00:36:55.84\00:36:58.71 So, the Great Wall of China would be God is missing. 00:36:58.75\00:37:02.62 You know, there is a barrier between even mentioning 00:37:02.65\00:37:05.19 His name and how, how that came, 00:37:05.22\00:37:06.99 we talked about some of that history 00:37:07.02\00:37:08.46 that this society-- 00:37:08.49\00:37:09.92 I mean, when we think about here in America, 00:37:09.96\00:37:11.59 everything is made in China, 00:37:11.63\00:37:13.13 it's electronic, it's very secular, 00:37:13.16\00:37:14.96 it's very progressive, it's very on the edge. 00:37:15.00\00:37:17.53 Lot of our devices that are sold in America 00:37:17.57\00:37:20.24 are some portion of it is manufactured in China. 00:37:20.27\00:37:23.77 So it's a city that, you know, this modernization, 00:37:23.81\00:37:27.24 this secular mind is just constantly going. 00:37:27.28\00:37:30.15 It seems like 24 hours a day with the factories 00:37:30.18\00:37:32.31 and the productions that go on there 00:37:32.35\00:37:34.22 so God is kind of pushed out 00:37:34.25\00:37:36.02 with all this materialism and secularism. 00:37:36.05\00:37:38.55 Well, and how do we reach the people of China? 00:37:38.59\00:37:42.59 There are, we try every way, you know, 00:37:42.62\00:37:44.63 there's the media 00:37:44.66\00:37:45.99 and we try training our leadership there. 00:37:46.03\00:37:48.50 One thing that is probably our most exciting initiative 00:37:48.53\00:37:52.13 is helping to send teams of two into Chinese people 00:37:52.17\00:37:55.60 and to un-reached areas of China. 00:37:55.64\00:37:58.04 We have provinces in China, the equivalent of states 00:37:58.07\00:38:01.81 that have no Seventh-day Adventist. 00:38:01.84\00:38:03.95 We have people all across China 00:38:03.98\00:38:05.85 that have never even heard the name of Jesus. 00:38:05.88\00:38:08.62 So one thing that we are doing is actively involved 00:38:08.65\00:38:11.59 in helping to support pioneer teams 00:38:11.62\00:38:14.26 going into un-reached areas of China. 00:38:14.29\00:38:16.49 And right now we have over, 00:38:16.52\00:38:18.53 well, just the 200 teams now in areas of China 00:38:18.56\00:38:22.16 and they go in and they know nobody. 00:38:22.20\00:38:25.37 And their goal is to plant a church. 00:38:25.40\00:38:28.20 And so, we get reports and a lot of exciting stories 00:38:28.24\00:38:31.47 from the frontlines 00:38:31.51\00:38:32.91 on what these pioneer teams are doing. 00:38:32.94\00:38:35.28 Well, just in line with 00:38:35.31\00:38:36.64 what you talk about the health message, 00:38:36.68\00:38:38.01 we got a report and Audrey communicates 00:38:38.05\00:38:41.68 and gets these reports on a quarterly basis. 00:38:41.72\00:38:44.12 She shared with me a story about in Inner Mongolia. 00:38:44.15\00:38:47.59 This is a huge province with very few Adventists 00:38:47.62\00:38:51.46 and very few Christians. 00:38:51.49\00:38:52.99 And a lot of superstitions. 00:38:53.03\00:38:54.46 A lot of superstitions in that area. 00:38:54.50\00:38:55.96 Is Mongolia further north? Yes, the north. 00:38:56.00\00:38:58.37 It's the northern part and they call that 00:38:58.40\00:38:59.73 Inner Mongolia is the part that's in China. 00:38:59.77\00:39:02.74 But, we had a team there and, 00:39:02.77\00:39:05.14 you know, what method they used 00:39:05.17\00:39:07.04 is health ministry to do church planting. 00:39:07.08\00:39:10.05 They would just literally go to the hospital 00:39:10.08\00:39:12.75 and begin visiting patients. 00:39:12.78\00:39:14.35 And they met a lady there who in the, 00:39:14.38\00:39:17.19 you know, in years past had come to know Jesus 00:39:17.22\00:39:20.96 through some other denominations 00:39:20.99\00:39:23.26 but had moved back to Inner Mongolia 00:39:23.29\00:39:25.79 and therefore got disconnected from any Christian group. 00:39:25.83\00:39:28.50 And here comes these two pioneer teams, 00:39:28.53\00:39:30.70 young people to visit them 00:39:30.73\00:39:32.53 and care for her and to pray with her. 00:39:32.57\00:39:35.07 And they start studying the Bible together. 00:39:35.10\00:39:36.81 When she comes out of the hospital, 00:39:36.84\00:39:38.37 they invite her to come to this new little house church. 00:39:38.41\00:39:40.51 By then there was 00:39:40.54\00:39:41.88 30 some people worshipping there. 00:39:41.91\00:39:44.05 And she has come face to face with the present truth, 00:39:44.08\00:39:49.32 comes face to face with the fact 00:39:49.35\00:39:50.89 that Jesus is coming soon. 00:39:50.92\00:39:52.49 She accepts the message and is baptized, 00:39:52.52\00:39:54.86 now is a faithful member of this little house church 00:39:54.89\00:39:57.53 in an un-entered area 00:39:57.56\00:39:58.89 because these two pioneer teams went 00:39:58.93\00:40:01.03 and basically just visited hospitals. 00:40:01.06\00:40:03.57 Yeah, I just received report recently this past week 00:40:03.60\00:40:07.27 of a pioneer team that was trying to connect. 00:40:07.30\00:40:10.07 How do they connect with their community? 00:40:10.11\00:40:12.17 So they set up a table and they started providing 00:40:12.21\00:40:14.84 free blood pressure checks for people. 00:40:14.88\00:40:17.35 And while people were sitting there, 00:40:17.38\00:40:18.78 they made it a point to ask them about their lives. 00:40:18.81\00:40:22.35 And this report from this team says, 00:40:22.38\00:40:24.82 everybody has a problem, there's something going on 00:40:24.85\00:40:28.16 that's hurting in everybody's heart. 00:40:28.19\00:40:30.46 And as the people would come 00:40:30.49\00:40:31.83 and get their blood pressure is taken, 00:40:31.86\00:40:33.60 this pioneer team would begin to facilitate 00:40:33.63\00:40:37.77 those individuals opening up and before you know it, 00:40:37.80\00:40:40.27 they were praying with the people 00:40:40.30\00:40:41.64 that were coming, introducing them to Jesus, 00:40:41.67\00:40:44.21 inviting them to come to church, 00:40:44.24\00:40:46.21 to their, to their house church. 00:40:46.24\00:40:48.84 Prayer is powerful and prayer ministry 00:40:48.88\00:40:51.35 that's what something that you're doing or? 00:40:51.38\00:40:53.78 Yes, I've been involved with prayer ministries 00:40:53.82\00:40:56.02 and honestly it can be overwhelming 00:40:56.05\00:41:00.02 when you look at the numbers. 00:41:00.06\00:41:01.79 And there are a lot of unique challenges in China 00:41:01.82\00:41:04.53 because the, the lack of "traditional organization" 00:41:04.56\00:41:09.16 that we see in our churches, the checks and balances. 00:41:09.20\00:41:13.03 Anyway, it can be overwhelming just, 00:41:13.07\00:41:15.07 just like everywhere. 00:41:15.10\00:41:16.47 But we have seen a great impact on the difference 00:41:16.50\00:41:20.61 that is made when people, people pray. 00:41:20.64\00:41:22.54 Amen. 00:41:22.58\00:41:23.91 And so, prayer is something we all know about 00:41:23.95\00:41:25.71 but I mean, even in my life personally, 00:41:25.75\00:41:27.88 it's one of those things that I don't necessarily do 00:41:27.92\00:41:31.85 as often as I should, that's always a, 00:41:31.89\00:41:34.92 a challenge and something beautiful to make it more real. 00:41:34.96\00:41:38.09 So that is something that we've been doing 00:41:38.13\00:41:39.69 in the Union office as well as across China is 00:41:39.73\00:41:43.06 trying to make prayer a more real part, 00:41:43.10\00:41:47.07 more vibrant part of life. 00:41:47.10\00:41:50.17 And to challenge our members 00:41:50.21\00:41:52.11 as Audrey goes in those seminars, 00:41:52.14\00:41:53.78 as we go around and visit with different groups in China. 00:41:53.81\00:41:56.88 To say, listen what you're facing is not possible. 00:41:56.91\00:42:00.92 It is a God sized task. 00:42:00.95\00:42:03.05 We need to pray more. 00:42:03.08\00:42:04.55 We need to be united in prayer. 00:42:04.59\00:42:06.49 And, John, 00:42:06.52\00:42:07.92 I really would ask your viewers to please pray for China. 00:42:07.96\00:42:12.89 As we come together I believe and pray for China 00:42:12.93\00:42:16.56 in a focus conservative way 00:42:16.60\00:42:18.77 and I don't know how this whole back story works. 00:42:18.80\00:42:21.44 I'm not sure exactly 00:42:21.47\00:42:23.04 how the levers of this great controversy work 00:42:23.07\00:42:26.04 but we know that when we pray, 00:42:26.07\00:42:28.18 God has that ability or that permission 00:42:28.21\00:42:32.65 to move where He couldn't if we were not prying. 00:42:32.68\00:42:35.52 Now, when you talk about 00:42:35.55\00:42:37.15 something else here the pioneer teams, 00:42:37.19\00:42:38.75 I want to go back to that for really quick brief moment. 00:42:38.79\00:42:42.06 Because that is in fact the arm of the church being extended 00:42:42.09\00:42:47.46 and there is a way that that could be enhanced, 00:42:47.50\00:42:49.76 talk about, talk about that because, 00:42:49.80\00:42:51.80 even though we know that, you know, 00:42:51.83\00:42:53.27 in Hong Kong you talk about the money is coming in 00:42:53.30\00:42:55.90 through all the exponential growth of babies, 00:42:55.94\00:43:00.34 the birth of babies, 00:43:00.38\00:43:02.18 but how are these pioneer teams being supported 00:43:02.21\00:43:05.88 and how can we get involved in that particular area? 00:43:05.91\00:43:08.85 Well, that is one fantastic way. 00:43:08.88\00:43:10.59 We invite people to get involved is to help support 00:43:10.62\00:43:14.29 pioneer teams in un-reached areas of China. 00:43:14.32\00:43:17.13 Now, any small or large amount makes a difference 00:43:17.16\00:43:20.53 but what we tend to ask for is that $3,000 a year 00:43:20.56\00:43:25.43 and that breaks down to what is $125 a month. 00:43:25.47\00:43:29.90 And it allows people to go into un-reached areas of China. 00:43:29.94\00:43:34.08 It helps to support their livelihood, 00:43:34.11\00:43:36.14 where they stay 00:43:36.18\00:43:37.65 and but one thing I want to add that 00:43:37.68\00:43:40.05 in addition to the monetary need is 00:43:40.08\00:43:43.82 we need more than anything, prayers for these pioneers 00:43:43.85\00:43:46.22 because they do get very, very discouraged. 00:43:46.25\00:43:48.79 And to have people praying for them 00:43:48.82\00:43:51.29 makes a huge difference. 00:43:51.33\00:43:52.66 There's a little saying that I like to use, 00:43:52.69\00:43:55.00 and that is that, "Money puts rice in the bowl, 00:43:55.03\00:43:59.03 but prayer puts life in the soul." 00:43:59.07\00:44:01.30 Amen. 00:44:01.34\00:44:02.67 And so, just like Jesus when He did that, 00:44:02.70\00:44:05.91 the miracle of breaking the fish and the bread 00:44:05.94\00:44:08.31 and fed thousands of people, 00:44:08.34\00:44:10.55 that's what we feel prayer does. 00:44:10.58\00:44:12.05 And China has been this, 00:44:12.08\00:44:14.38 this romanticized mystical thing 00:44:14.42\00:44:17.19 behind a bamboo curtain for all these years. 00:44:17.22\00:44:20.16 But we want people now to think of China 00:44:20.19\00:44:22.46 as a place where they can make a difference. 00:44:22.49\00:44:24.23 That's right. 00:44:24.26\00:44:25.59 Where they can be a part 00:44:25.63\00:44:26.96 of what happens in China by their prayers. 00:44:27.00\00:44:29.60 Just from their living room, 00:44:29.63\00:44:30.97 from their devotional times praying 00:44:31.00\00:44:32.90 and as Audrey mentioned financially 00:44:32.93\00:44:34.47 when folks donate through, you know, 00:44:34.50\00:44:37.74 the website that you'll see on the screen 00:44:37.77\00:44:40.48 and through our partners there at OCI that $125 is per-person 00:44:40.51\00:44:45.45 there's two in each team every month 00:44:45.48\00:44:47.95 and we've had churches come together 00:44:47.98\00:44:50.45 and support a team. 00:44:50.49\00:44:51.82 But even if you just ten dollars 00:44:51.85\00:44:54.49 hopefully putted through this, 00:44:54.52\00:44:56.26 anything helps us send more teams. 00:44:56.29\00:44:59.39 And it's not us sending, 00:44:59.43\00:45:00.80 it's the local church across China saying, 00:45:00.83\00:45:04.50 "We can reach that city over there, 00:45:04.53\00:45:06.20 we can reach that city." 00:45:06.23\00:45:07.60 And we come alongside them and say, "Amen. 00:45:07.64\00:45:09.87 What can we do to help 00:45:09.90\00:45:11.24 and we provide what finances we can." 00:45:11.27\00:45:13.94 But right now, we have 200 teams 00:45:13.98\00:45:16.08 but we need 1,000 teams. 00:45:16.11\00:45:18.81 But now is the time to church plant in China 00:45:18.85\00:45:22.15 because given the growth of the economy, 00:45:22.18\00:45:25.55 the devil is entrenching himself more 00:45:25.59\00:45:29.02 and right now we need to move forward. 00:45:29.06\00:45:33.40 I hear a question coming. 00:45:33.43\00:45:34.76 Oh, no, no, no. I'm-- 00:45:34.80\00:45:36.43 we are gonna be praying for China also. 00:45:36.46\00:45:38.53 Yes. 00:45:38.57\00:45:39.90 It's so important but the people do need to give. 00:45:39.93\00:45:42.70 Well, it supports. 00:45:42.74\00:45:44.07 I just want to tell you this one story real quick. 00:45:44.11\00:45:45.64 Sure. 00:45:45.67\00:45:47.01 It's a pioneer team that moved into 00:45:47.04\00:45:48.51 an un-reached area of China and before, you know, 00:45:48.54\00:45:51.65 they had people meeting with them every Sabbath, 00:45:51.68\00:45:54.08 maybe around 20 people or so 00:45:54.12\00:45:55.92 and in the middle of their Sabbath service 00:45:55.95\00:45:58.22 a lady came in and said, "Is Jesus here? Is Jesus here?" 00:45:58.25\00:46:01.12 And she started just yelling and screaming things 00:46:01.16\00:46:04.29 that were indiscernible 00:46:04.33\00:46:05.96 and she fell to the ground right there in the church 00:46:05.99\00:46:09.50 and these two pioneer teams thought, 00:46:09.53\00:46:11.20 "Oh, yes. 00:46:11.23\00:46:13.07 The church that sent us said if anything like this happens, 00:46:13.10\00:46:15.80 we should gather around and sing and pray." 00:46:15.84\00:46:20.48 So these two young pioneers grab the members around said, 00:46:20.51\00:46:23.88 "Hey, let's sing and pray over this person 00:46:23.91\00:46:26.68 who was yelling and screaming and riding on the floor. 00:46:26.72\00:46:30.05 And they sang and they prayed and there was no response 00:46:30.09\00:46:34.26 and the members were so discouraged. 00:46:34.29\00:46:35.82 They are like "What happened? 00:46:35.86\00:46:37.19 You told us that we should sing and pray 00:46:37.23\00:46:38.89 and we would see a change?" 00:46:38.93\00:46:40.26 Yeah. 00:46:40.30\00:46:41.63 And the two pioneers looked at each other 00:46:41.66\00:46:43.40 and through their eyes they determined that 00:46:43.43\00:46:46.30 they would pray and they would sing 00:46:46.33\00:46:48.90 until there was a change. 00:46:48.94\00:46:50.41 So they did 00:46:50.44\00:46:51.77 and they saw this person mellow out, 00:46:51.81\00:46:55.31 come to their senses and the person stood and said, 00:46:55.34\00:46:59.11 "You know, ever since I was small, 00:46:59.15\00:47:01.48 I have been possessed by demons. 00:47:01.52\00:47:04.29 But somebody told me 00:47:04.32\00:47:05.65 that if I could go into a church 00:47:05.69\00:47:08.02 that there I would be liberated." 00:47:08.06\00:47:10.06 That person came into that church today, 00:47:10.09\00:47:12.23 "Is Jesus here? Is Jesus here?" 00:47:12.26\00:47:14.06 And the devil was struggling 00:47:14.10\00:47:15.43 to keep a hold of that person soul, 00:47:15.46\00:47:17.37 prayer and singing 00:47:17.40\00:47:18.97 and the leadership of this pioneer team 00:47:19.00\00:47:21.40 brought this person freedom 00:47:21.44\00:47:23.17 that they never would have realized. 00:47:23.20\00:47:24.91 That person began to have Bible studies, 00:47:24.94\00:47:27.91 has found Jesus and then baptized. 00:47:27.94\00:47:29.28 Amen. 00:47:29.31\00:47:30.65 That's an exciting story. That's so exciting. 00:47:30.68\00:47:32.01 When you think of the fact that-- 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.38 The church. Yeah. 00:47:33.42\00:47:34.75 Coming in looking for Christ 00:47:34.78\00:47:36.12 and there is that controversy going on right there 00:47:36.15\00:47:37.95 at that very spot, keep praying. 00:47:37.99\00:47:40.32 Well, somebody had an acronym PUSH, 00:47:40.36\00:47:42.42 Pray Until Something Happens. Yes, I like that. I like it. 00:47:42.46\00:47:45.36 You know, and I saw that 00:47:45.39\00:47:46.73 we grew up kind of with that, with that acronym. 00:47:46.76\00:47:50.27 But what I want to do for our viewing 00:47:50.30\00:47:52.07 and listening audience 00:47:52.10\00:47:53.44 because my wife works for 3ABN radio, 00:47:53.47\00:47:55.10 I want to give them an opportunity 00:47:55.14\00:47:56.47 to get the address, 00:47:56.50\00:47:57.84 so that you can invite Bob and Audrey to come 00:47:57.87\00:48:02.44 and maybe share in your church and your community 00:48:02.48\00:48:04.88 and also find out ways 00:48:04.91\00:48:06.25 to become more actively involved in initiative 00:48:06.28\00:48:08.55 such as supporting the pioneer teams. 00:48:08.58\00:48:11.15 Here is the information that you would need. 00:48:11.19\00:48:16.02 If you like to know more about this ministry 00:48:16.06\00:48:18.06 or how you support it, 00:48:18.09\00:48:19.43 you can do so by writing to Chinese Union 00:48:19.46\00:48:23.00 C/O Outpost Centers International, 00:48:23.03\00:48:25.97 5132 Layton Lane, Apison, Tennessee 37302. 00:48:26.00\00:48:31.87 That's Chinese Union 00:48:31.91\00:48:33.91 C/O Outpost Centers International, 00:48:33.94\00:48:36.95 5132 Layton Lane, Apison, Tennessee 37302. 00:48:36.98\00:48:43.28 You can also visit them online at kgrowth.org, 00:48:43.32\00:48:47.96 that's the letter kgrowth.org. 00:48:47.99\00:48:52.59 Contact them today, 00:48:52.63\00:48:53.96 they would love to hear from you. 00:48:54.00\00:49:01.10 As you know our program is not done yet but, 00:49:01.14\00:49:03.61 Bob and Audrey, 00:49:03.64\00:49:04.97 if you were to think about the things 00:49:05.01\00:49:06.94 that are happening in China 00:49:06.98\00:49:08.51 you're gonna be going back there not to-- 00:49:08.54\00:49:11.01 Just few days. Just a few days. 00:49:11.05\00:49:13.42 When you land being the stature of a man in China, 00:49:13.45\00:49:17.65 how have you founded a blessing to be unique 00:49:17.69\00:49:21.69 in a very established society 00:49:21.72\00:49:24.36 and what I mean by that is how do you blend in? 00:49:24.39\00:49:26.03 Yeah. 00:49:26.06\00:49:27.40 You know what, the language. 00:49:27.43\00:49:29.16 When you open your mouth and you speak in Mandarin, 00:49:29.20\00:49:31.67 you speak their language, it's amazing. 00:49:31.70\00:49:34.00 You go from being a mile apart to a foot apart. 00:49:34.04\00:49:37.34 People say you care, you talk in my language 00:49:37.37\00:49:40.91 and that's why I think Jesus came here. 00:49:40.94\00:49:43.41 He could have sent messengers and He did through His prophets 00:49:43.45\00:49:45.91 but when He came personally 00:49:45.95\00:49:48.38 I think that incarnational ministry is critical. 00:49:48.42\00:49:51.92 Not only in what we are doing in China 00:49:51.95\00:49:53.92 but what we do in everything 00:49:53.96\00:49:55.72 that we do in all the ministry that we do. 00:49:55.76\00:49:57.79 Wow. Wow. 00:49:57.83\00:49:59.39 And when you think about the work 00:49:59.43\00:50:01.86 how it's progressing because here in America we, 00:50:01.90\00:50:04.53 you know, from Sabbath to Sabbath 00:50:04.57\00:50:06.13 and week to week in our evangelism 00:50:06.17\00:50:07.87 we say "We are praying for Jesus to return" 00:50:07.90\00:50:12.04 but then we hear reports like this 00:50:12.07\00:50:13.71 where there are people that don't even know His name 00:50:13.74\00:50:16.18 and it almost becomes like, 00:50:16.21\00:50:17.85 "Okay, not yet, Lord, there are some people 00:50:17.88\00:50:19.81 that need to know You in China." 00:50:19.85\00:50:21.98 You live with that daily reality 00:50:22.02\00:50:24.09 and you are eating the cake one bite at a time. 00:50:24.12\00:50:27.19 How does that drive you on a day by day basis 00:50:27.22\00:50:29.06 when you look at nonmembers compared 00:50:29.09\00:50:31.66 to the 1.4 billion people that you have to deal with? 00:50:31.69\00:50:36.56 Well, it can be, 00:50:36.60\00:50:38.07 it can be overwhelming once again 00:50:38.10\00:50:40.50 because the church growth rate, 00:50:40.54\00:50:43.71 the spread of Christianity has actually slowed down in China. 00:50:43.74\00:50:46.91 Why? Because what people want is money. 00:50:46.94\00:50:50.41 They want to succeed. 00:50:50.45\00:50:51.78 They want to get that education. 00:50:51.81\00:50:53.98 They want to be comfortable. 00:50:54.02\00:50:56.08 They have seen now the options that are out there. 00:50:56.12\00:50:59.12 So more than ever, 00:50:59.15\00:51:00.49 we need supernatural things in China 00:51:00.52\00:51:03.06 that can happen only through the outpouring 00:51:03.09\00:51:05.09 of the Holy Spirit and through prayer. 00:51:05.13\00:51:06.96 Because just like us here, just like in the United States, 00:51:07.00\00:51:10.47 it's easy to become settled, to become satisfied 00:51:10.50\00:51:14.90 and turn our relationship with Jesus into something 00:51:14.94\00:51:19.17 that happens just once a week if we have time for that. 00:51:19.21\00:51:21.71 That's right. 00:51:21.74\00:51:23.08 So when I think of summarizing what China needs is 00:51:23.11\00:51:25.61 that our people have a sense of a message 00:51:25.65\00:51:29.55 that they need to share urgently 00:51:29.58\00:51:31.09 that people in China have a greater need 00:51:31.12\00:51:34.06 than just to put money in their pocket 00:51:34.09\00:51:35.96 and of course that 00:51:35.99\00:51:37.33 the Holy Spirit is rained down in a mighty way 00:51:37.36\00:51:39.59 so that these things can happen. 00:51:39.63\00:51:41.16 And that's why we emphasize prayer. 00:51:41.20\00:51:42.66 This is a God sized task. That's right. 00:51:42.70\00:51:44.97 No initiative or, yes, we praise the Lord, 00:51:45.00\00:51:47.40 this last year we had the highest growth rate 00:51:47.44\00:51:49.37 we've had in 10 years. 00:51:49.40\00:51:50.84 So the church is growing, the Lord is working 00:51:50.87\00:51:53.54 but how we will finish 00:51:53.58\00:51:55.04 the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. 00:51:55.08\00:51:57.38 God is-- 00:51:57.41\00:51:58.75 Our Book of Acts says over and over again 00:51:58.78\00:52:00.82 "Showing, manifesting, confirming the word of truth 00:52:00.85\00:52:05.29 through signs and wonders" 00:52:05.32\00:52:06.65 and that's gonna happen, my friend, 00:52:06.69\00:52:08.02 and it's gonna be a rapid movement. 00:52:08.06\00:52:09.92 And right now we are sowing seeds, 00:52:09.96\00:52:11.39 we are doing what we can but please pray for China. 00:52:11.43\00:52:13.50 Wow, you know, this program is moving faster 00:52:13.53\00:52:16.30 than we would like it to. 00:52:16.33\00:52:18.20 We are gonna just take a short newsbreak time here 00:52:18.23\00:52:20.60 and come back with a few closing thoughts 00:52:20.64\00:52:23.04 to wrap up this very innovative and God sized program. 00:52:23.07\00:52:26.84
