Well, we're gonna come back in just a moment. 00:03:36.28\00:03:39.25 We're going to find out the stories behind this 00:03:39.28\00:03:42.78 but first before we even go to a song, 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.19 I wanted to share a scripture with you. 00:03:45.22\00:03:47.19 Usually I come out 00:03:47.22\00:03:48.56 and I kind of have in my mind a scripture 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.03 that we'd like to share with you. 00:03:51.06\00:03:54.13 This time I asked Jan, 00:03:54.16\00:03:55.50 "Is there anything particular on your heart?" 00:03:55.53\00:03:58.20 And what she gave me was Isaiah 11 00:03:58.23\00:04:01.97 and let me read verse 6. 00:04:02.00\00:04:03.61 Verse 6 through 9 of Isaiah 00:04:03.64\00:04:05.94 is telling about the Messiah's return 00:04:05.97\00:04:08.84 and that when he returns 00:04:08.88\00:04:10.85 He's going to usher in universal peace, 00:04:10.88\00:04:13.95 there's going to be just, it's going to be 00:04:13.98\00:04:17.75 like the Garden of Eden was meant to be. 00:04:17.79\00:04:20.46 It's going to be perfect. 00:04:20.49\00:04:22.26 And so here's what Isaiah 11:6 says, 00:04:22.29\00:04:27.00 it says, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, 00:04:27.03\00:04:31.93 the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, 00:04:31.97\00:04:36.20 the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; 00:04:36.24\00:04:40.28 and a little child shall lead them." 00:04:40.31\00:04:43.55 Can you imagine when we look at 00:04:43.58\00:04:45.55 what's going on in our world today 00:04:45.58\00:04:47.95 with all the terrorists attacks, with the wars, 00:04:47.98\00:04:51.39 with the murders, things that are, you know 00:04:51.42\00:04:55.02 just seems that men's consciences have waxed cold. 00:04:55.06\00:05:02.00 But when Jesus returns this is what He promises. 00:05:02.03\00:05:05.83 And it's going to be so exciting. 00:05:05.87\00:05:08.24 Well, right now we are going to listen to a song 00:05:08.27\00:05:12.07 from our own Pastor C.A. You are from Washington, Terri? 00:10:22.92\00:10:24.95 Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Okay. 00:10:24.99\00:10:27.56 Tell me, before we actually get off 00:10:27.59\00:10:30.06 into what the ministry is all about, 00:10:30.09\00:10:32.66 Jan, just give us a nutshell. 00:10:32.69\00:10:35.26 Did you grow up in a Christian environment, 00:10:35.30\00:10:38.73 how did the Lord get your attention 00:10:38.77\00:10:40.54 to have this personal relationship? 00:10:40.57\00:10:43.91 I grew up in an Adventist home. 00:10:43.94\00:10:45.31 My father was a teacher in our academies. 00:10:45.34\00:10:47.71 And, then I left the church for a while. 00:10:47.74\00:10:51.58 And when I began to come back, I decided, 00:10:51.61\00:10:55.28 by the time I was gonna have children, 00:10:55.32\00:10:56.65 I was married and having children, 00:10:56.69\00:10:58.39 I decided it was time. 00:10:58.42\00:10:59.75 And I started studying, but I was getting nothing. 00:10:59.79\00:11:03.02 And so one day I just told the Lord, 00:11:03.06\00:11:05.03 "If You want me to stay 00:11:05.06\00:11:08.93 and if You want a relationship with me, 00:11:08.96\00:11:11.20 You're gonna have to show me something today 00:11:11.23\00:11:12.80 or it's over with, I give it up." 00:11:12.83\00:11:15.70 And that day I opened up the Book Desire of Ages. 00:11:15.74\00:11:19.54 And I began to read and for three hours 00:11:19.57\00:11:22.01 I could not lay the book down 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.61 because alls I could see was Jesus. 00:11:23.65\00:11:26.31 And I just-- 00:11:26.35\00:11:28.05 The tears were just rolling down my face 00:11:28.08\00:11:30.15 as I read and saw Jesus for the first time. 00:11:30.19\00:11:32.92 So though I grew up knowing Him 00:11:32.95\00:11:35.59 and I always had a bent for that, 00:11:35.62\00:11:37.63 but it wasn't until then that I knew 00:11:37.66\00:11:40.16 that I wanted to commit my life to Him. 00:11:40.20\00:11:42.93 Praise God. 00:11:42.96\00:11:44.30 So you knew about Him growing up 00:11:44.33\00:11:46.13 but you actually met Him due to this experience. 00:11:46.17\00:11:49.20 Praise God. I met Him, yes. 00:11:49.24\00:11:50.74 And, Terri, how about you? 00:11:50.77\00:11:52.11 Did you grow up in an Adventist Christian home? 00:11:52.14\00:11:54.08 I did, I did. 00:11:54.11\00:11:56.88 I grew up hearing about the missionaries 00:11:56.91\00:11:58.95 and from the time I was six years old, 00:11:58.98\00:12:01.72 I wanted to be a missionary nurse. 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.18 Really. 00:12:03.22\00:12:04.55 Yeah, so... 00:12:04.59\00:12:05.92 So, now, when did it become personal for you with Christ? 00:12:05.95\00:12:11.79 At a very young age, 00:12:11.83\00:12:13.46 I've always had a close love of God, of Jesus. 00:12:13.50\00:12:17.73 Wonderful. 00:12:17.77\00:12:19.57 And didn't have an opportunity till later 00:12:19.60\00:12:23.44 to be able to actually go on a mission trip. 00:12:23.47\00:12:26.31 And so, actually going with Jan 00:12:26.34\00:12:31.25 on the Maasai Development Project a few years ago, 00:12:31.28\00:12:34.88 just fell in love. 00:12:34.92\00:12:36.25 Praise God. 00:12:36.28\00:12:37.62 And we're gonna get to hear little more 00:12:37.65\00:12:38.99 about that story in just a moment. 00:12:39.02\00:12:41.62 Tell us a little, Jan, about the Maasai. 00:12:41.66\00:12:45.43 Are they as fierce 00:12:45.46\00:12:47.60 as they have been reported to be? 00:12:47.63\00:12:53.03 I would say, knowing what I-- 00:12:53.07\00:12:56.20 I don't view them as fierce but I know other people do, 00:12:56.24\00:13:01.68 still in Kenya and they can be. 00:13:01.71\00:13:05.11 I've seen them to be wild. 00:13:05.15\00:13:06.82 I've, you know, 00:13:06.85\00:13:08.35 and I would not want to be on the other end of the spear. 00:13:08.38\00:13:12.29 You can count on me, I'll tell you that. 00:13:12.32\00:13:14.36 But, very loving-- 00:13:14.39\00:13:19.39 Accepting. 00:13:19.43\00:13:20.76 Accepting, yeah, group of people that I just, 00:13:20.80\00:13:24.53 I have just loved as family. 00:13:24.57\00:13:27.57 So how did a blonde, 00:13:27.60\00:13:29.27 blue-eyed woman end up in a ministry in Africa, 00:13:29.30\00:13:33.01 for the Maasai? 00:13:33.04\00:13:34.61 It's a God thing. 00:13:34.64\00:13:36.28 And it all started out with friendships with women, 00:13:36.31\00:13:38.78 a woman to woman. 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.42 Like I said, I always had this desire 00:13:40.45\00:13:42.98 and because I was not on a budget, 00:13:43.02\00:13:44.59 like I said earlier, 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.29 I kind of was able to develop my own interest in Kenya 00:13:46.32\00:13:50.36 while we were living there. 00:13:50.39\00:13:51.99 And my other friend, Gwen Edwards, 00:13:52.03\00:13:56.53 was living there as well 00:13:56.56\00:13:57.90 and she had started a branch Sabbath school 00:13:57.93\00:14:02.70 with the children in a village 00:14:02.74\00:14:04.94 close to the academy, where they lived 00:14:04.97\00:14:07.54 and where her husband was working at the time. 00:14:07.58\00:14:09.84 And, so they actually were afraid of us. 00:14:09.88\00:14:14.95 The Maasai's. 00:14:14.98\00:14:16.32 They would, yes, they would tell their children 00:14:16.35\00:14:17.69 don't walk too close to those white people 00:14:17.72\00:14:19.62 because they could take you away and they could, 00:14:19.65\00:14:22.52 you know, and you don't know 00:14:22.56\00:14:24.16 what they might do to you, so stay away. 00:14:24.19\00:14:25.66 So they were, they were afraid of us 00:14:25.69\00:14:28.40 but over several years of just going up 00:14:28.43\00:14:31.27 and visiting the ladies, you know, using hand signals 00:14:31.30\00:14:35.00 and talking and playing with the children 00:14:35.04\00:14:38.07 and taking our own children to play with them, they, they-- 00:14:38.11\00:14:43.81 We gained their confidence 00:14:43.85\00:14:45.18 so we developed a friendship and a bond. 00:14:45.21\00:14:48.18 And one day one of the ladies came to Gwen and said, 00:14:48.22\00:14:52.42 "We noticed that you go to church on Saturday. 00:14:52.45\00:14:55.32 We notice that you-- 00:14:55.36\00:14:56.99 Why don't you do that for us." 00:14:57.03\00:14:59.06 And so Gwen went to the principal. 00:14:59.09\00:15:00.86 Now let me just hit the pause there 00:15:00.90\00:15:02.86 'cause you just mentioned 00:15:02.90\00:15:04.23 that you had to use hand signals. 00:15:04.27\00:15:05.80 Do they have their own language? 00:15:05.83\00:15:07.34 Did Gwen speak their language or when this woman came to her, 00:15:07.37\00:15:10.74 did they also speak English? 00:15:10.77\00:15:12.27 They brought a translator with them. 00:15:12.31\00:15:13.64 Okay. Yeah. 00:15:13.68\00:15:15.01 So if there's not a translator, 00:15:15.04\00:15:16.98 we use a few words here or there of Swahili, 00:15:17.01\00:15:19.91 of Kimaasai and of a few English words 00:15:19.95\00:15:23.89 and a lot of hand signals and we would talk. 00:15:23.92\00:15:26.89 But we usually, we had a translator with us. 00:15:26.92\00:15:28.99 Okay. Yeah. 00:15:29.02\00:15:30.36 So anyway, we talked to the principal 00:15:30.39\00:15:33.56 and they opened up, let us have the classroom, 00:15:33.60\00:15:36.73 one of the classrooms for church 00:15:36.77\00:15:38.20 and we started church service for the women there. 00:15:38.23\00:15:41.34 And-- 00:15:41.37\00:15:42.70 What is their typical, traditional spiritual beliefs? 00:15:42.74\00:15:48.04 I don't want to say devil worship 00:15:51.95\00:15:53.82 because it's not really devil worship, 00:15:53.85\00:15:55.35 but it's spiritual worship. 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.62 It's Spiritism. Which is a spirit world. 00:15:57.65\00:16:00.16 Yeah, yeah. 00:16:00.19\00:16:03.49 Although, you know, I've had-- 00:16:03.53\00:16:05.43 we've had some experiences with some of our lay-pastors. 00:16:05.46\00:16:07.86 We have one that right now 00:16:07.90\00:16:09.23 a lay-pastor that, we had to let go 00:16:09.26\00:16:11.30 because he basically sold his soul to the devil. 00:16:11.33\00:16:15.37 Wow. Yeah. 00:16:15.40\00:16:16.74 And so and he became possessed and we had to let him go 00:16:16.77\00:16:20.21 and he is, yeah, making decision. 00:16:20.24\00:16:23.48 So there is that real, spirit. 00:16:23.51\00:16:28.48 There is a spirit worship, there is out there but it-- 00:16:28.52\00:16:31.35 I wouldn't say-- 00:16:31.39\00:16:33.39 Well, that is, it's devil worship. 00:16:33.42\00:16:34.86 It is, it's demonic. It is. It's demonic. 00:16:34.89\00:16:36.49 You know, I just have to say this for our audience 00:16:36.52\00:16:38.89 because sometimes growing up in United States, 00:16:38.93\00:16:44.20 you know, some people don't even know 00:16:44.23\00:16:45.73 if Satan is for real, but I guarantee you, 00:16:45.77\00:16:48.17 if you go to-- 00:16:48.20\00:16:49.80 When I was doing a camp meeting, 00:16:49.84\00:16:52.47 at the Sedaven camp meeting, 00:16:52.51\00:16:54.08 we were talking with the conference people there 00:16:54.11\00:16:56.51 and we asked them, 00:16:56.54\00:16:57.88 "How seriously do you take 00:16:57.91\00:17:01.32 the idea of exorcism of casting out demons?" 00:17:01.35\00:17:05.69 And they said, "Very seriously." 00:17:05.72\00:17:08.02 They said when they get a call to do that, 00:17:08.06\00:17:09.96 they will fast for three days, 00:17:09.99\00:17:12.33 fast and pray for three days solid. 00:17:12.36\00:17:15.30 Before they go, they have to be totally prepared. 00:17:15.33\00:17:18.30 The spirit realm-- 00:17:18.33\00:17:20.07 I think one thing that makes it easier for some of the people, 00:17:20.10\00:17:23.57 once they hear the truth about Christ 00:17:23.61\00:17:25.77 and the Holy Spirit in that area 00:17:25.81\00:17:28.48 is that they're used to working in the spirit realm. 00:17:28.51\00:17:33.72 But there are demonic forces. 00:17:33.75\00:17:35.78 You talk-- 00:17:35.82\00:17:37.15 If you want to ever talk to anybody 00:17:37.19\00:17:38.95 in any religion, that is, 00:17:38.99\00:17:41.56 when they are worshipping animals or spirits, 00:17:41.59\00:17:43.96 you will find that there are definitely demonic forces 00:17:43.99\00:17:46.93 and it's very real, so. 00:17:46.96\00:17:49.00 We actually went out to a village 00:17:49.03\00:17:50.93 where we noticed that friends that we had made 00:17:50.97\00:17:54.40 were all wearing white bands painted around their eyes 00:17:54.44\00:17:58.37 and so and they would turn their backs on us 00:17:58.41\00:18:01.38 when we would come up. 00:18:01.41\00:18:02.74 And so we asked them what, what is this? 00:18:02.78\00:18:05.08 You know, what's going on here? 00:18:05.11\00:18:06.61 And they said, "Well, the witch doctor has said that, 00:18:06.65\00:18:12.62 that they have to do this in protest of Christianity. 00:18:12.65\00:18:16.02 Wow. 00:18:16.06\00:18:17.39 But within a few days it was gone, 00:18:17.43\00:18:19.69 you know, it came off. 00:18:19.73\00:18:21.20 Love has a way. It does. Yeah. 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.37 It conquers all things. Yeah. 00:18:23.40\00:18:24.73 So you began this church service, 00:18:24.77\00:18:28.90 initially, was it just the women coming, 00:18:28.94\00:18:31.07 children, women? 00:18:31.11\00:18:32.44 Women and children with a few men. 00:18:32.47\00:18:34.78 They had some guards that were Maasai 00:18:34.81\00:18:36.71 and they would come as well. 00:18:36.75\00:18:39.91 I started teaching literacy classes 00:18:39.95\00:18:41.98 in during the week 00:18:42.02\00:18:43.35 and then doing the church service 00:18:43.39\00:18:44.72 and then the ladies said, 00:18:44.75\00:18:46.09 "We would like to go out to our home village now." 00:18:46.12\00:18:49.46 And so we went out there 00:18:49.49\00:18:52.03 and we did a three-day seminar and meetings. 00:18:52.06\00:18:54.30 And this is in a Maasai village? 00:18:54.33\00:18:55.66 In a Maasai village. 00:18:55.70\00:18:57.03 We went out for three days and then after that-- 00:18:57.07\00:19:01.14 How did the tribal leaders accept this? 00:19:01.17\00:19:03.14 Were they open to this at first? 00:19:03.17\00:19:04.51 You know, yeah they were fine and we were mainly at a-- 00:19:04.54\00:19:08.24 one family's boma in which there wasn't a problem, 00:19:08.28\00:19:11.08 they welcomed us to stay in. 00:19:11.11\00:19:12.45 But later, about nine months later 00:19:12.48\00:19:16.25 we did another ten-day where we just went 00:19:16.28\00:19:18.45 and camped for ten days 00:19:18.49\00:19:19.85 and I took some youth from Nairobi out with me. 00:19:19.89\00:19:22.42 And we were having meetings and we had the chief 00:19:22.46\00:19:27.10 and some of the elders from the area come and demand 00:19:27.13\00:19:30.33 that we stop our meetings and have a meeting with them. 00:19:30.37\00:19:33.50 And, yeah, I didn't know what to expect but I-- 00:19:33.54\00:19:37.34 it was really interesting because they stood up 00:19:37.37\00:19:40.04 and they said, "What do you want here? 00:19:40.08\00:19:41.41 We don't want Christianity here. 00:19:41.44\00:19:42.78 We don't want Christians here. So what do you want? 00:19:42.81\00:19:44.51 Are you trying to change us? What is that you want?" 00:19:44.55\00:19:47.22 And I remember one of the Maasai ladies 00:19:47.25\00:19:51.09 kind of patted me on the shoulder and said-- 00:19:51.12\00:19:52.55 and motioned for me "Don't worry." 00:19:52.59\00:19:54.46 And, like, we were gonna be praying. 00:19:54.49\00:19:57.33 And, you know, it was a God thing. 00:19:57.36\00:19:59.09 I don't know what I said to them but-- 00:19:59.13\00:20:02.46 I don't remember, 00:20:02.50\00:20:03.83 but when I was finished, they said-- 00:20:03.87\00:20:07.04 and I told them, 00:20:07.07\00:20:08.40 I said, "We are not here to change you 00:20:08.44\00:20:09.97 because your culture is precious. 00:20:10.01\00:20:12.51 We don't want to take your culture, 00:20:12.54\00:20:13.88 well, you have so many good things about it, 00:20:13.91\00:20:15.81 but we just want to share with you about God." 00:20:15.84\00:20:20.02 And, in light of what he has, hope he has. 00:20:20.05\00:20:24.55 And so... 00:20:24.59\00:20:26.49 and then I-- 00:20:26.52\00:20:27.86 What else I said, I don't have a clue. 00:20:27.89\00:20:29.59 But when I was finished, 00:20:29.62\00:20:30.96 the chief came up to me and said, 00:20:30.99\00:20:32.33 "Whatever you want, you can have." 00:20:32.36\00:20:34.83 Pray, that is something. 00:20:34.86\00:20:36.20 Whatever you want, and that was a God thing. 00:20:36.23\00:20:37.97 So I know that whatever words came out of my mouth, 00:20:38.00\00:20:40.24 it was not me. 00:20:40.27\00:20:41.60 Now the culture is precious to them 00:20:41.64\00:20:43.97 but they do have some strange practices. 00:20:44.01\00:20:47.91 Let's talk about the youth 00:20:47.94\00:20:50.08 and how early they get involved in pre-arranged marriages 00:20:50.11\00:20:57.05 and about the circumcision practices. 00:20:57.09\00:21:02.52 The Maasai women, 00:21:02.56\00:21:03.99 they don't have a lot of value except for the girls, 00:21:04.03\00:21:08.53 for the fathers, so they can sell them 00:21:08.56\00:21:10.77 as wives for dowry. 00:21:10.80\00:21:13.37 And the cows are much more important than the women 00:21:13.40\00:21:15.64 or the children. 00:21:15.67\00:21:17.01 If a child is sick or if a cow is sick, 00:21:17.04\00:21:18.54 they are going to treat the cow instead of the child 00:21:18.57\00:21:21.58 because it's worth money. 00:21:21.61\00:21:22.98 The child is not unless it's a boy child. 00:21:23.01\00:21:26.38 But the girls, they are sold at a very-- 00:21:26.41\00:21:30.02 As soon as they reach puberty, 00:21:30.05\00:21:31.45 they go through female genital mutilation. 00:21:31.49\00:21:36.79 I've seen it done as young as seven years old. 00:21:36.83\00:21:40.50 But normally it would be around 11, 12 years old. 00:21:40.53\00:21:44.87 And they go through a thirty-day cleansing 00:21:44.90\00:21:47.30 and then after they've been healed, 00:21:47.34\00:21:49.94 then they are married. 00:21:49.97\00:21:52.17 And most times it's pre-arranged 00:21:52.21\00:21:56.61 and it could be somebody-- 00:21:56.64\00:21:57.98 Maybe this 12-year-old girl 00:21:58.01\00:21:59.35 is going to marry a 70-year-old man 00:21:59.38\00:22:02.42 as may be a sixth wife or a seventh wife. 00:22:02.45\00:22:06.69 And so, basically she's been sold into, 00:22:06.72\00:22:10.29 I would say slavery, is how I would put it. 00:22:10.33\00:22:13.53 But these girls, if they survive the mutilation 00:22:13.56\00:22:18.60 and the cutting, then they are given away then, 00:22:18.63\00:22:22.70 and they become wives and bearing children 00:22:22.74\00:22:26.68 at a very young age and... 00:22:26.71\00:22:28.54 Now, when you said, "If they survive." 00:22:28.58\00:22:30.55 Do some of them actually die during this? 00:22:30.58\00:22:31.95 Many. 00:22:31.98\00:22:33.31 I did a program one time, talking to a group of Maasai 00:22:33.35\00:22:37.59 that had become Christians and talking about circumcision, 00:22:37.62\00:22:41.72 and I asked them, 00:22:41.76\00:22:43.12 "How many of you know of somebody 00:22:43.16\00:22:44.49 who has died because of this?" 00:22:44.53\00:22:45.89 And every single person raised their hand. 00:22:45.93\00:22:48.73 We have a young girl at our rescue center right now, 00:22:48.76\00:22:51.87 whose 12-year-old sister was to be married. 00:22:51.90\00:22:54.60 And the father had already collected 00:22:54.64\00:22:56.84 some of the dowry and-- 00:22:56.87\00:22:58.87 But they had to get her circumcised first 00:22:58.91\00:23:01.04 and go through the cleansing. 00:23:01.08\00:23:02.44 So they cut, they cut her and she bled to death. 00:23:02.48\00:23:06.98 The younger sister saw this. 00:23:07.02\00:23:09.15 The father was arrested 00:23:09.18\00:23:10.85 and sent to jail as well as the lady 00:23:10.89\00:23:14.46 who had done the cutting, 00:23:14.49\00:23:15.82 because it's actually against the law now, 00:23:15.86\00:23:17.43 used to not be, but it is now. 00:23:17.46\00:23:19.36 And he called the wife in and said, 00:23:19.39\00:23:22.96 "Okay you-- 00:23:23.00\00:23:24.57 this is what I want you to do. 00:23:24.60\00:23:25.93 I want you to secretly take the younger sister, 00:23:25.97\00:23:29.54 I want you to take Napuk and I want you to go 00:23:29.57\00:23:31.31 and I want you to circumcise her secretly. 00:23:31.34\00:23:34.21 Give her to the man 00:23:34.24\00:23:35.58 because I'm not giving back the dowry. 00:23:35.61\00:23:37.65 Unbelievable. 00:23:37.68\00:23:39.01 So fortunately we were able to get, we found out about it. 00:23:39.05\00:23:43.39 You intervened. Yeah. 00:23:43.42\00:23:45.42 And she was rescued and brought to our rescue center. 00:23:45.45\00:23:48.59 So let's talk a little bit about the ministry. 00:23:48.62\00:23:52.43 You started in this very humble way. 00:23:52.46\00:23:56.26 I think you came back to the States then, didn't you? 00:23:56.30\00:23:58.30 Before you went back and you went over-- 00:23:58.33\00:24:01.40 was it Gwen that went with you, who went with you-- 00:24:01.44\00:24:03.30 Celeste. It was Celeste. 00:24:03.34\00:24:04.84 Right and Celeste really saw the need for an organized, 00:24:04.87\00:24:09.91 I mean, you just started the work 00:24:09.94\00:24:11.38 but now she's seeing the need for an organized ministry. 00:24:11.41\00:24:13.65 Exactly. 00:24:13.68\00:24:15.02 So tell us, what the Maasai Development Project 00:24:15.05\00:24:17.92 is all about? 00:24:17.95\00:24:19.65 You know when we started out it was mainly-- 00:24:19.69\00:24:22.72 we wanted to share Jesus. 00:24:22.76\00:24:24.99 And so we started with lay pastors 00:24:25.03\00:24:29.03 and we sent Maasai out to win the Maasai 00:24:29.06\00:24:35.10 because it doesn't work so well when you send other people. 00:24:35.14\00:24:39.74 So Maasai to meet the Maasai. 00:24:39.77\00:24:42.58 And it started out 00:24:42.61\00:24:45.15 with just a two lay-pastors and-- 00:24:45.18\00:24:47.62 So you meet them, train them, I mean, they-- 00:24:47.65\00:24:50.89 you know that they've been converted 00:24:50.92\00:24:52.95 so that you send them out. 00:24:52.99\00:24:54.32 And I might add that at this point 00:24:54.36\00:24:56.49 we have 26 workers right now, 26 lay pastors. 00:24:56.52\00:24:59.36 Wow. 00:24:59.39\00:25:00.73 And about nine or ten of them 00:25:00.76\00:25:03.23 were brought in to the Adventism, 00:25:03.26\00:25:07.00 from one of our lay pastors years ago. 00:25:07.04\00:25:09.10 Praise the Lord. Praise God. 00:25:09.14\00:25:11.47 And so, yeah so, we're seeing a second group coming in that-- 00:25:11.51\00:25:17.01 and some of them were just young children 00:25:17.05\00:25:19.61 actually when we first started going out and meeting them. 00:25:19.65\00:25:24.49 That's got to be so rewarding. 00:25:24.52\00:25:25.85 So we see them-- 00:25:25.89\00:25:27.22 Yeah, it is, it is really rewarding. 00:25:27.26\00:25:28.96 So we started out with that but then in the early 2000s 00:25:28.99\00:25:32.46 it came to our attention, 00:25:32.49\00:25:33.83 really about the need for the girl child 00:25:33.86\00:25:36.46 and a rescue center. 00:25:36.50\00:25:38.03 So we were actually supporting a rescue center 00:25:38.07\00:25:40.97 that was already established out in Kajiado. 00:25:41.00\00:25:44.44 And as they grew, we started expanding. 00:25:44.47\00:25:48.01 Maasai Development started expanding elsewhere. 00:25:48.04\00:25:50.18 We were out by the Maasai Mara Game Reserve 00:25:50.21\00:25:53.52 and there is a school there and they asked us 00:25:53.55\00:25:56.18 if we would be willing to come up there 00:25:56.22\00:25:58.15 and have a rescue center. 00:25:58.19\00:25:59.85 And I asked them 00:25:59.89\00:26:01.22 if we had a rescue center built tomorrow or today, 00:26:01.26\00:26:04.59 how many at-risk girls will there be tomorrow? 00:26:04.63\00:26:07.06 And they said 1,500. 00:26:07.10\00:26:09.10 Now if you were to see this, but you should wonder 00:26:09.13\00:26:10.90 where in the world could they be. 00:26:10.93\00:26:12.80 But they are just, they're there in the bush. 00:26:12.83\00:26:17.07 And our youngest-- 00:26:17.11\00:26:18.67 Fifteen hundred, now that shocked me. 00:26:18.71\00:26:20.54 Shocked me. 00:26:20.58\00:26:21.91 And so we immediately started praying about it 00:26:21.94\00:26:24.61 and raising funds and in 2000 and 2010 November, 00:26:24.65\00:26:30.82 we opened up our rescue center. 00:26:30.85\00:26:32.79 We have 58 children 00:26:32.82\00:26:36.56 and some of the children that we've had 00:26:36.59\00:26:37.93 since they were little 00:26:37.96\00:26:39.56 are now in University and in college 00:26:39.59\00:26:42.23 and so we educate them all the way 00:26:42.26\00:26:44.43 from whenever they come, up through college. 00:26:44.47\00:26:48.40 How do the men of the tribe, especially the fathers, 00:26:48.44\00:26:52.71 if these little girls are like chattel to them, 00:26:52.74\00:26:55.01 something that they can sell, how do they accept it 00:26:55.04\00:26:58.11 when they know you rescued their daughter? 00:26:58.15\00:27:01.62 Yeah, we have to walk very carefully. 00:27:01.65\00:27:03.28 And our manager has had-- 00:27:03.32\00:27:07.72 has been threatened in the past by young Moran 00:27:07.76\00:27:10.73 that had come and said, "We are going to kill you, 00:27:10.76\00:27:13.26 because you are taking away our girls." 00:27:13.29\00:27:16.67 And also fathers have-- 00:27:16.70\00:27:19.40 one father knew that we were going 00:27:19.43\00:27:21.10 to start sponsoring his daughter and taking her in. 00:27:21.14\00:27:24.77 So he arranged to have one of his friends rape 00:27:24.81\00:27:28.64 his daughter hoping to get her pregnant so that, 00:27:28.68\00:27:33.58 then we would say no. 00:27:33.62\00:27:36.12 Fortunately, we were-- 00:27:36.15\00:27:37.92 she did not get pregnant 00:27:37.95\00:27:39.35 and we were able to get her away 00:27:39.39\00:27:40.96 and she has been with us. 00:27:40.99\00:27:42.46 She is now in form three or a junior in high school, 00:27:42.49\00:27:46.76 doing very well. 00:27:46.80\00:27:48.43 So is it usually the mothers 00:27:48.46\00:27:49.93 that bring these little girls to you or? 00:27:49.96\00:27:52.63 Mothers have, and I've seen mother-- 00:27:52.67\00:27:54.47 we had one mother who brought her daughter. 00:27:54.50\00:27:57.64 She went back home and then her husband kicked her out. 00:27:57.67\00:28:01.04 So she no longer had a home anywhere. 00:28:01.08\00:28:03.04 She had no place to go. 00:28:03.08\00:28:04.41 She had to just go from place to place 00:28:04.45\00:28:06.21 begging for food and things 00:28:06.25\00:28:07.58 because she had been disowned because she had-- 00:28:07.62\00:28:12.25 she was brave enough to rescue her daughter. 00:28:12.29\00:28:14.56 And we've had many women come and say, 00:28:14.59\00:28:18.39 "Please, I don't want my daughter to go 00:28:18.43\00:28:19.96 what I've gone through." 00:28:20.00\00:28:22.00 Praise the Lord for the ministry. 00:28:22.03\00:28:24.03 So we are gonna come back 00:28:24.07\00:28:25.63 'cause we want to hear the story of Josephine. 00:28:25.67\00:28:27.17 Yes. 00:28:27.20\00:28:28.54 But do you also have-- 00:28:28.57\00:28:30.51 is there a church building there? 00:28:30.54\00:28:33.38 Yes. 00:28:33.41\00:28:36.04 I'm excited to say that finally it's been several years now 00:28:36.08\00:28:40.12 that we've had the one-day churches from ASI. 00:28:40.15\00:28:42.82 Yeah, but they are now out in Maasai land. 00:28:42.85\00:28:45.62 And last October, I went to visit 00:28:45.65\00:28:48.19 one of our lay pastor's churches. 00:28:48.22\00:28:51.46 And here was the framework from the one-day church. 00:28:51.49\00:28:56.13 And so of course after church they as usual they will say, 00:28:56.16\00:29:00.44 what-- 00:29:00.47\00:29:01.80 you know, can you help us 00:29:01.84\00:29:03.17 with this or with this or this is what we're doing. 00:29:03.20\00:29:05.84 And they were telling me that for two years 00:29:05.87\00:29:08.41 they've been praying for a church. 00:29:08.44\00:29:11.18 And coming together 00:29:11.21\00:29:12.81 'cause they've for three years they were just under a tree. 00:29:12.85\00:29:15.98 And so, they have been praying 00:29:16.02\00:29:19.19 and what they didn't know 00:29:19.22\00:29:22.76 was that the previous lay pastor 00:29:22.79\00:29:24.76 had written a letter to his sponsor and said, 00:29:24.79\00:29:27.10 "My goal is to have a church". 00:29:27.13\00:29:29.13 That sponsor contacted me 00:29:29.16\00:29:30.80 previous before me going over and seeing 00:29:30.83\00:29:32.67 that the one-day church had come up there. 00:29:32.70\00:29:34.97 And said, "I want to help this dream come true." 00:29:35.00\00:29:37.97 So as I am sitting there listening to them 00:29:38.01\00:29:40.14 say we want this church, you know, 00:29:40.18\00:29:41.51 can we get help to finish the church. 00:29:41.54\00:29:43.81 I'm just trying to-- 00:29:43.85\00:29:46.68 I am just holding myself to my chair going, 00:29:46.72\00:29:48.32 "Oh, please hurry him, 00:29:48.35\00:29:49.68 finish talking so I can tell you 00:29:49.72\00:29:51.05 there is a church coming." 00:29:51.09\00:29:52.95 And so when they were done and I got up and I said, 00:29:52.99\00:29:54.42 "Yeah, " I said, "I'm so excited to tell you 00:29:54.46\00:29:58.23 we already have a sponsor. 00:29:58.26\00:29:59.59 They are going to help you finish this church." 00:29:59.63\00:30:01.00 And right now, Shelley, 00:30:01.03\00:30:02.36 it is being built as we speak right now 00:30:02.40\00:30:04.03 It's in the-- 00:30:04.07\00:30:05.40 it's being finished, 00:30:05.43\00:30:06.77 that one-day church. 00:30:06.80\00:30:08.14 And our lay pastors, 00:30:08.17\00:30:09.64 if there isn't an opportunity for one-day church, 00:30:09.67\00:30:12.21 they mobilize the community. 00:30:12.24\00:30:14.08 And they will put up a tin structure, 00:30:14.11\00:30:16.91 they'll put up a wooden structure. 00:30:16.95\00:30:20.35 And it's very primitive, 00:30:20.38\00:30:21.98 but as long as they have a building to come to, 00:30:22.02\00:30:24.22 the people come. 00:30:24.25\00:30:25.59 We don't. We don't. 00:30:25.62\00:30:27.06 We so take for granted how blessed we are here 00:30:27.09\00:30:30.63 in the States or any of the developed countries, 00:30:30.66\00:30:34.10 where we've got beautiful churches. 00:30:34.13\00:30:36.30 And in some places like in Europe beautiful churches 00:30:36.33\00:30:39.07 that are not even a fourth of the way filled, 00:30:39.10\00:30:42.20 which is a shame. 00:30:42.24\00:30:43.57 But these people are very passionate about God 00:30:43.61\00:30:48.64 and they're very passionate about having a home 00:30:48.68\00:30:51.28 that makes them really feel, a church makes them feel 00:30:51.31\00:30:55.15 that they really belong, don't they? 00:30:55.18\00:30:56.69 Right, exactly. 00:30:56.72\00:30:58.05 So tell us the story of Josephine? 00:30:58.09\00:31:02.12 In 2011, I was at the centre, spending a few months there. 00:31:02.16\00:31:06.09 And the school master 00:31:06.13\00:31:09.56 from next door came over and said, 00:31:09.60\00:31:11.93 "I have a girl here, she's a runaway, 00:31:11.97\00:31:14.77 she's married and she's runaway 00:31:14.80\00:31:17.31 and would you take her?" 00:31:17.34\00:31:18.67 So we called her over to talk to her. 00:31:18.71\00:31:20.88 And she was 12 years old at the time. 00:31:20.91\00:31:23.75 She's married and she was 12 years old? 00:31:23.78\00:31:26.05 Yes, and she'd been married for two years. 00:31:26.08\00:31:27.68 Oh, bless her. 00:31:27.72\00:31:29.05 And looking for an opportunity to escape. 00:31:29.08\00:31:31.09 And she knew if she could get to the school 00:31:31.12\00:31:33.82 that once she got inside the gates 00:31:33.86\00:31:35.69 that she could be protected. 00:31:35.72\00:31:37.09 And they wouldn't force her to go back. 00:31:37.13\00:31:39.06 But the school master said, "Well, you know, 00:31:39.09\00:31:41.23 we'll have to talk to the chief, 00:31:41.26\00:31:42.83 because you are already married. 00:31:42.86\00:31:44.63 We'll have to talk." 00:31:44.67\00:31:46.00 She goes, "Nope, I won't talk to him." 00:31:46.03\00:31:47.37 He said, "Why?" 00:31:47.40\00:31:48.74 She goes, "Because he can be bought off." 00:31:48.77\00:31:50.71 And if you take me there, he will send me back. 00:31:50.74\00:31:53.68 He said, "Okay, we will call the counselor." 00:31:53.71\00:31:55.28 "Oh no, that counselor can be bought off." 00:31:55.31\00:31:58.08 So they brought her to right next door, 00:31:58.11\00:32:01.18 to our, to our compound 00:32:01.22\00:32:03.65 and we were able to get the Government involved then. 00:32:03.69\00:32:07.69 We could call the Child services 00:32:07.72\00:32:09.39 and we got custody of her. 00:32:09.42\00:32:11.46 And so she came to our centre 00:32:11.49\00:32:15.10 and she said, "I want to go school." 00:32:15.13\00:32:18.40 Of course, she was 12 years old 00:32:18.43\00:32:19.77 and she had to start-- 00:32:19.80\00:32:21.14 she went back to third grade and started. 00:32:21.17\00:32:23.07 And so these little kids now are making fun of her 00:32:23.10\00:32:25.27 and she's like, "You can laugh all you want, 00:32:25.31\00:32:27.58 but I am getting educated." 00:32:27.61\00:32:29.71 And she's now in class seven, finish-- 00:32:29.74\00:32:32.35 and will start class eight 00:32:32.38\00:32:34.12 and two years to go. 00:32:34.15\00:32:36.22 This is Josephine on the screen? 00:32:36.25\00:32:37.59 This is Josephine on the screen. 00:32:37.62\00:32:38.95 Now, Josephine is a special girl. 00:32:38.99\00:32:43.12 In that, last October, 00:32:43.16\00:32:46.13 I was in Kenya, went out to visit. 00:32:46.16\00:32:48.26 And she was... 00:32:48.30\00:32:52.63 I went to church and I noticed first of all, 00:32:52.67\00:32:55.10 because we use a room 00:32:55.14\00:32:56.71 from the school next door to us, 00:32:56.74\00:32:58.81 so when I went, I thought, 00:32:58.84\00:33:00.18 "Oh, we've moved to a larger room." 00:33:00.21\00:33:03.35 And there was a lot more people. 00:33:03.38\00:33:04.71 Then I also noticed that there was a school teacher 00:33:04.75\00:33:06.08 that was coming. 00:33:06.11\00:33:07.45 And, and it was just packed with kids. 00:33:07.48\00:33:10.95 Now on Sundays, the children have-- 00:33:10.99\00:33:13.62 Because the school is not an Adventist school, 00:33:13.66\00:33:15.76 they can either 00:33:15.79\00:33:17.13 go to a Bible study at our center 00:33:17.16\00:33:19.39 or they can go to church service 00:33:19.43\00:33:21.13 there on Sunday. 00:33:21.16\00:33:22.86 So many other children were coming over to us 00:33:22.90\00:33:26.74 for our Bible studies on Sundays at our centre. 00:33:26.77\00:33:30.61 So I had the Bible study the next day. 00:33:30.64\00:33:32.07 And when I walked in, 00:33:32.11\00:33:34.14 I noticed that it was full and of many boys. 00:33:34.18\00:33:37.71 And I'm going, 00:33:37.75\00:33:39.08 "What are all these boys doing in our dormitory?" 00:33:39.11\00:33:41.35 And I think we have a picture. 00:33:41.38\00:33:42.72 We'll show you. And yeah here is our dormitory. 00:33:42.75\00:33:45.19 Now it doesn't look really full there. 00:33:45.22\00:33:47.36 But there's over 60 children there. 00:33:47.39\00:33:49.16 And 30 of our children 00:33:49.19\00:33:51.73 or twenty-some of our children are in secondary school, 00:33:51.76\00:33:54.36 so only 30 of those children out of that 60 00:33:54.40\00:33:58.43 are actually our children from our center. 00:33:58.47\00:34:00.44 The rest are children from the school next door. 00:34:00.47\00:34:03.24 So how did they get there? 00:34:03.27\00:34:05.77 They came because of Josephine. 00:34:05.81\00:34:07.61 When I was through with the study, 00:34:07.64\00:34:08.98 I went and sat down beside Josephine. 00:34:09.01\00:34:11.05 And I said, "Josephine?" 00:34:11.08\00:34:13.58 She said, "How are you doing?" 00:34:13.62\00:34:15.25 She goes, "You see all these kids?" 00:34:15.28\00:34:16.89 I go, "Yeah." 00:34:16.92\00:34:18.25 She goes, "They are my friends. 00:34:18.29\00:34:20.66 I invited them to come and they come, 00:34:20.69\00:34:23.43 and they're coming to Bible study." 00:34:23.46\00:34:25.39 The school teacher, 00:34:25.43\00:34:26.76 from the day before there was a church 00:34:26.80\00:34:28.90 and is now requesting Bible studies, 00:34:28.93\00:34:31.60 is her teacher 00:34:31.63\00:34:32.97 who she'd been talking to and saying, 00:34:33.00\00:34:34.57 "He needed to come to church." 00:34:34.60\00:34:35.94 So what you're saying is she's a bold witness for the Lord. 00:34:35.97\00:34:38.34 She's a bold witness. Praise God. 00:34:38.37\00:34:40.61 Now, now this is the special part, 00:34:40.64\00:34:44.21 is that Josephine-- 00:34:44.25\00:34:46.11 these young boys that you saw in that picture, 00:34:46.15\00:34:49.02 they came to our lay pastor there. 00:34:49.05\00:34:51.05 And they said, "Pastor, we're going home for holiday, 00:34:51.09\00:34:54.42 but we don't have a church at our village." 00:34:54.46\00:34:57.86 And they sent me a message, 00:34:57.89\00:34:59.39 "Can we get a lay pastor for this village?" 00:34:59.43\00:35:02.20 And first of all I'm going, "Okay, where is this village? 00:35:02.23\00:35:04.63 We don't have the funding for another lay pastor. 00:35:04.67\00:35:07.20 We just don't have it right now. 00:35:07.24\00:35:09.20 Because we don't even have enough sponsors 00:35:09.24\00:35:10.91 for what we have. 00:35:10.94\00:35:12.27 And then I said, 00:35:12.31\00:35:14.24 "First of all, tell me where this is?" 00:35:14.28\00:35:15.61 And goes, "Jan, this is Josephine's parent's village. 00:35:15.64\00:35:19.61 This is Josephine's home village 00:35:19.65\00:35:21.38 where these boys are from." 00:35:21.42\00:35:22.75 And we said, "Get a lay pastor there. 00:35:22.78\00:35:25.65 We're gonna step out in faith." 00:35:25.69\00:35:27.26 We still don't have a sponsor for him yet 00:35:27.29\00:35:29.59 but we now have one. 00:35:29.62\00:35:31.03 And those boys, they came and they said, 00:35:31.06\00:35:33.63 "We can no longer go to church on Sunday 00:35:33.66\00:35:36.03 because now we know the truth, 00:35:36.06\00:35:38.00 and now we know the Bible, 00:35:38.03\00:35:41.17 and we are finding the truth from the Bible. 00:35:41.20\00:35:44.34 Praise the Lord. And they said, "Please." 00:35:44.37\00:35:45.81 So now, because of Josephine, 00:35:45.84\00:35:49.31 not only is there now 00:35:49.34\00:35:51.21 a church starting in her home village. 00:35:51.25\00:35:53.31 And she is praying that her parents will be reached 00:35:53.35\00:35:56.62 and that they will come to know Jesus as well. 00:35:56.65\00:35:58.99 Now in the mean time, 00:35:59.02\00:36:00.36 what I was to start to tell you is, two years ago, 00:36:00.39\00:36:02.82 she was looking really sad, and I said, "What's wrong?" 00:36:02.86\00:36:05.96 And she said that her little sister 00:36:05.99\00:36:08.16 who was turning 10 years old, 00:36:08.20\00:36:10.00 was just getting ready to be circumcised 00:36:10.03\00:36:11.87 and sold as a wife. 00:36:11.90\00:36:13.84 We were able to go out and get her. 00:36:13.87\00:36:16.84 To circumvent the circumcision, right? 00:36:16.87\00:36:18.87 There you go. 00:36:18.91\00:36:20.58 Let me ask you this, I mean, if I'm wondering this, 00:36:20.61\00:36:23.45 I know that you're probably wondering this at home as well. 00:36:23.48\00:36:27.12 What is the purpose of the circumcision 00:36:27.15\00:36:29.22 before they're married? 00:36:29.25\00:36:31.12 If you go-- 00:36:31.15\00:36:32.49 if you ask anybody, oops, 00:36:32.52\00:36:34.76 they won't-- 00:36:34.79\00:36:36.12 they won't really know. 00:36:36.16\00:36:37.53 It's just been tradition. 00:36:37.56\00:36:39.43 It's going from a child into womanhood. 00:36:39.46\00:36:43.47 But if you go back into the history of it, 00:36:43.50\00:36:46.17 it was actually given as a gift to the gods. 00:36:46.20\00:36:49.20 So this mutilation, oh my goodness. 00:36:49.24\00:36:51.61 Okay, that's enough. 00:36:51.64\00:36:52.97 I-- yeah, we've got far enough on that one. 00:36:53.01\00:36:55.74 So what does it cost 00:36:55.78\00:36:59.71 to sponsor a Bible worker there? 00:36:59.75\00:37:03.08 A Bible worker is $150 a month. 00:37:03.12\00:37:06.45 $150 a month. Yeah. 00:37:06.49\00:37:08.56 And we have some churches that, you know, 00:37:08.59\00:37:11.63 as a church they will sponsor a pastor or something. 00:37:11.66\00:37:14.50 So then it's not such a burden on one person. 00:37:14.53\00:37:16.50 And we have other people say, 00:37:16.53\00:37:17.90 "I'd like to sponsor a pastor 00:37:17.93\00:37:19.27 but I can only give this much a month." 00:37:19.30\00:37:20.80 So then we put them together. 00:37:20.84\00:37:22.17 Put them together. Yeah, yeah. 00:37:22.20\00:37:23.87 That's wonderful, that's wonderful. 00:37:23.91\00:37:26.57 Now let's-- 00:37:26.61\00:37:28.58 you've been sitting over there being so quiet, Terri. 00:37:28.61\00:37:32.18 And I just got to share with our guest if I may. 00:37:32.21\00:37:35.75 Those who were watching and listening by radio, 00:37:35.78\00:37:38.35 Terri said, "Don't make me talk when I get there." 00:37:38.39\00:37:42.22 So talking is not your thing in front of a camera 00:37:42.26\00:37:45.66 but we're gonna talk. 00:37:45.69\00:37:49.26 Tell us about when you went over on the mission trip 00:37:49.30\00:37:53.74 and how the Lord impacted you through that trip. 00:37:53.77\00:37:59.51 Oh, well, where to begin. 00:37:59.54\00:38:04.08 We started out actually staying in tents. 00:38:04.11\00:38:08.92 And I don't even know the name of the little area we were at, 00:38:08.95\00:38:12.59 but we stayed in tents and we had a small-- 00:38:12.62\00:38:14.82 Did you go over to provide nursing services? 00:38:14.86\00:38:16.62 Nursing services, in a little medical clinic, 00:38:16.66\00:38:19.73 we had a doctor and couple of nurses with us. 00:38:19.76\00:38:22.36 We saw over a course of three days 00:38:25.63\00:38:28.44 over 2,000 people. 00:38:28.47\00:38:29.80 Oh my! 00:38:29.84\00:38:31.17 And they just-- 00:38:31.21\00:38:33.11 they just get there, 00:38:33.14\00:38:34.84 they walk miles to get to see someone 00:38:34.88\00:38:39.38 for some help medically. 00:38:39.41\00:38:42.78 And I was just humbled by the fact 00:38:42.82\00:38:47.22 that they would show up to see us to, 00:38:47.26\00:38:50.76 to get a little bit of care. 00:38:50.79\00:38:52.13 To drive, to walk that far 00:38:52.16\00:38:54.50 and make such an effort to get there. 00:38:54.53\00:38:55.96 And to wait all day, some of them just to be seen. 00:38:56.00\00:38:59.90 Terri had an experience with a young girl 00:38:59.93\00:39:02.40 that is amazing. 00:39:02.44\00:39:04.87 Oh, yeah this was-- 00:39:04.91\00:39:08.04 well a little girl, 00:39:08.08\00:39:09.41 I don't know may be 11-12 years old. 00:39:09.44\00:39:14.32 I had an interpreter that was sitting right with me 00:39:14.35\00:39:17.85 to interpret and kind of go over the medical needs 00:39:17.89\00:39:21.66 of each person, 00:39:21.69\00:39:23.09 usually it was a family that would come. 00:39:23.12\00:39:25.39 And this little girl was by herself 00:39:25.43\00:39:27.76 and she was trying to almost slide, 00:39:27.80\00:39:32.37 you know just to be hidden, she was hiding her face. 00:39:32.40\00:39:35.00 We had to get very close to her to even hear 00:39:35.04\00:39:37.31 what she was trying to ask. 00:39:37.34\00:39:38.81 And it turned out that, 00:39:38.84\00:39:41.11 her story was that she had been put out of her home at night. 00:39:43.14\00:39:48.58 And there were some farm workers from another area 00:39:48.62\00:39:52.82 that three or four of them that had raped her and she was, 00:39:52.85\00:39:56.56 you know, she had an infection and she was miserable 00:39:56.59\00:40:00.13 and so we treated her. 00:40:00.16\00:40:01.66 And then we got James, who's at the girl's center, 00:40:01.70\00:40:05.77 he followed up with her mom 00:40:05.80\00:40:08.70 and tried to make sure that she was safe. 00:40:08.74\00:40:11.87 Yes. 00:40:11.91\00:40:13.24 We didn't know if we needed to rescue her 00:40:13.27\00:40:14.88 and bring her to the center or, but-- 00:40:14.91\00:40:19.31 Bless her little heart. Yeah. 00:40:19.35\00:40:21.08 You know, you just can't even imagine what... 00:40:21.12\00:40:23.95 She was. 00:40:23.99\00:40:25.32 How the cult-- 00:40:25.35\00:40:26.69 you know, the difference in culture, 00:40:26.72\00:40:28.32 how parents would even put their child out at night 00:40:28.36\00:40:30.53 where they would be exposed to this kind of risk. 00:40:30.56\00:40:33.13 We've had mothers that have sent 00:40:33.16\00:40:35.93 their daughters out to the young men 00:40:35.96\00:40:37.73 because the young men will taunt the mothers 00:40:37.77\00:40:41.70 and make them, make their life really hard, 00:40:41.74\00:40:44.67 if they don't send their daughters out. 00:40:44.71\00:40:47.21 Oh, that's unbelievable. 00:40:47.24\00:40:49.88 But now, you had a driver 00:40:49.91\00:40:53.08 when you were on this missionary trip. 00:40:53.11\00:40:56.28 And there was a miracle involved in his family 00:40:56.32\00:41:00.36 and I think that's what touched your heart 00:41:00.39\00:41:02.39 to get involved on a permanent basis. 00:41:02.42\00:41:05.79 Tell us about this driver and his son? 00:41:05.83\00:41:09.50 Well, I think Jan was there. I met the driver. 00:41:09.53\00:41:12.97 He was our driver when we were there 00:41:13.00\00:41:15.04 and got to know him a bit. 00:41:15.07\00:41:18.41 Very special, very special person 00:41:18.44\00:41:20.51 and he's been more and more involved, 00:41:20.54\00:41:22.08 I think with our-- 00:41:22.11\00:41:23.45 with the Maasai Development Project now. 00:41:23.48\00:41:25.81 But I think it was last October 00:41:25.85\00:41:30.15 and I wasn't there on that trip. 00:41:30.19\00:41:32.75 But... 00:41:32.79\00:41:34.12 Yeah, I arrived from the airport. 00:41:34.16\00:41:35.92 And he was driving me home, 00:41:35.96\00:41:37.33 and he told me that they had a baby since-- 00:41:37.36\00:41:40.46 you know, since I was there. 00:41:40.50\00:41:41.83 And that was a real surprise to me. 00:41:41.86\00:41:43.20 And a couple of days later, 00:41:43.23\00:41:44.73 my sister, who is also a nurse flew in and he said, 00:41:44.77\00:41:48.40 "We were supposed to go somewhere the next day." 00:41:48.44\00:41:50.14 And he called and he goes, 00:41:50.17\00:41:51.51 "I had to take my wife and my son, new born son." 00:41:51.54\00:41:54.14 He was, well three weeks old to the doctor, 00:41:54.18\00:41:57.95 well, come to find out the baby had meningitis. 00:41:57.98\00:42:00.62 Oh my! Three weeks old. 00:42:00.65\00:42:03.05 And if the wife hadn't gotten set, 00:42:03.08\00:42:05.22 probably the baby would have died 00:42:05.25\00:42:06.59 before they ever got him to the hospital. 00:42:06.62\00:42:08.59 By the time they got him there, he was so dehydrated. 00:42:08.62\00:42:12.36 Of course, he'd already stiffen back. 00:42:12.39\00:42:14.40 The front nerve was swollen on his head. 00:42:14.43\00:42:17.30 He was comatose. 00:42:17.33\00:42:20.14 So they took him to the government hospital. 00:42:20.17\00:42:22.20 And so we would go and start to pray for the-- 00:42:22.24\00:42:25.97 we prayed over the baby. 00:42:26.01\00:42:27.58 And sent messages all over the world 00:42:27.61\00:42:30.75 on our Facebook page, Maasai development Facebook, 00:42:30.78\00:42:33.48 our personal ones. 00:42:33.52\00:42:34.85 We called our church family here in the States 00:42:34.88\00:42:37.15 and they got prayer warriors going 00:42:37.19\00:42:38.69 and we would just pray. 00:42:38.72\00:42:40.86 And Pastor Bernie Anderson was there visiting. 00:42:40.89\00:42:44.09 So we took him to go and pray over the baby. 00:42:44.13\00:42:47.30 Right now, I think there's a picture of him here 00:42:47.33\00:42:49.73 but-- 00:42:49.76\00:42:51.13 this is him today. 00:42:51.17\00:42:52.57 Oh! Isn't he darling? 00:42:52.60\00:42:54.50 This is little baby Jackson 00:42:54.54\00:42:55.87 and absolutely no residual effects from it. 00:42:55.90\00:42:58.81 And he was-- 00:42:58.84\00:43:00.18 went from about two pounds. 00:43:00.21\00:43:05.78 Three, two and a half, three pounds 00:43:05.81\00:43:07.15 he had lost so much weight. 00:43:07.18\00:43:08.58 And now he is a healthy little boy, 00:43:08.62\00:43:11.52 just smiling and happy. 00:43:11.55\00:43:13.76 And they gave all credit to God. 00:43:13.79\00:43:16.86 And the day before I left, last October 00:43:16.89\00:43:19.63 when I came back to the States, I stopped by their house 00:43:19.66\00:43:22.13 to visit the baby and take pictures. 00:43:22.16\00:43:24.90 And they were saying, 00:43:24.93\00:43:27.94 "Oh, we really need a bigger house." 00:43:27.97\00:43:30.21 They had a very humble, humble home. 00:43:30.24\00:43:32.37 And they asked me to pray for him, 00:43:32.41\00:43:37.51 pray for them and before I left. 00:43:37.55\00:43:39.21 And so I did and I asked, I said, 00:43:39.25\00:43:40.58 "Lord, would you please provide a two-bedroom home for this-- 00:43:40.62\00:43:45.22 nice two bed room home for this family. 00:43:45.25\00:43:48.16 They're needing a bigger place." 00:43:48.19\00:43:49.56 And I forgot all about that prayer. 00:43:49.59\00:43:51.49 When I was there here, just two weeks ago, 00:43:51.53\00:43:53.86 I just got back. 00:43:53.90\00:43:56.10 And I went to visit them in their home. 00:43:56.13\00:43:58.73 In their two-bedroom home. 00:43:58.77\00:44:00.10 In their new two-bedroom, beautiful home. 00:44:00.14\00:44:02.40 And they said, 00:44:02.44\00:44:03.77 "Do you remember when you prayed?" 00:44:03.81\00:44:05.14 And I said, 00:44:05.17\00:44:06.51 "No, I really don't remember that I prayed." 00:44:06.54\00:44:07.88 They go, "Well, you did. 00:44:07.91\00:44:09.24 And we remember that and here we are in our home." 00:44:09.28\00:44:12.18 And I have to tell you this. 00:44:12.21\00:44:13.92 They have watched, they watch 3ABN. 00:44:13.95\00:44:17.29 Oh, glory to God. 00:44:17.32\00:44:18.75 Well if they're watching today, 00:44:18.79\00:44:20.12 I just want to send you kisses out to you. 00:44:20.16\00:44:23.19 Let me ask you, 00:44:23.22\00:44:27.10 and, Terri, I'm gonna come to you first. 00:44:27.13\00:44:29.03 Going-- 00:44:29.06\00:44:31.93 I've always heard that mission trips really can-- 00:44:31.97\00:44:36.57 As you said, it humbles you, it changes you. 00:44:36.60\00:44:37.94 It changes your perspective on life in many ways. 00:44:37.97\00:44:41.34 And is this what made you 00:44:41.38\00:44:43.88 decide to become involved, this executive secretary 00:44:43.91\00:44:47.22 for the Maasai Development Project? 00:44:47.25\00:44:50.25 Well, I didn't have any plans of that. 00:44:50.29\00:44:52.82 I've always wanted to do something. 00:44:52.85\00:44:55.32 And I've always just prayed to be able to do something. 00:44:55.36\00:44:59.76 So Jan called me and we talked about it 00:44:59.79\00:45:04.03 for a while and I just, 00:45:04.07\00:45:05.40 I prayed about it a while because I wanted to-- 00:45:05.43\00:45:09.27 I'm a nurse, I'm not a secretary. 00:45:09.30\00:45:12.27 So it's a big step for me but-- 00:45:12.31\00:45:15.04 It's a stretch. 00:48:16.06\00:48:18.49 And so people can-- 00:48:18.53\00:48:20.33 Yes, in fact we have a mission group going over 00:48:20.36\00:48:22.86 in May 24, this year. 00:48:22.90\00:48:25.13 We have another group that would go over in October. 00:48:25.17\00:48:27.90 So we do about two trips a year. 00:48:27.94\00:48:30.34 Usually June, July and then again in October. 00:48:30.37\00:48:33.58 This year we are taking a little earlier 00:48:33.61\00:48:35.21 so we can get better tickets 00:48:35.24\00:48:37.11 but, but yeah, we usually do about two a year. 00:48:37.15\00:48:39.88 All right. 00:48:39.91\00:48:41.25 And so people can become involved 00:48:41.28\00:48:43.42 in that sense. 00:48:43.45\00:48:45.79 They can become involved sponsoring either a student 00:48:45.82\00:48:49.16 at your school or Bible worker and, of course, 00:48:49.19\00:48:54.33 you can become involved by your prayers. 00:48:54.36\00:48:56.60 That's, I think if you talk to anybody 00:48:56.63\00:48:58.80 in the ministry the one thing they, 00:48:58.83\00:49:00.67 I don't want to use the word covet 00:49:00.70\00:49:02.04 'cause we're told not to covet but it's similar to that. 00:49:02.07\00:49:06.37 What we desire most is your prayer support 00:49:06.41\00:49:09.24 because we know that we have a mighty God 00:49:09.28\00:49:11.51 but at the same time, 00:49:11.55\00:49:13.92 you know, you've heard the story 00:49:13.95\00:49:15.82 where the pastor tells his congregation, 00:49:15.85\00:49:19.89 you know, this is what is gonna cost. 00:49:19.92\00:49:22.59 The good news is God has provided 00:49:22.62\00:49:25.09 for this ministry. 00:49:25.13\00:49:27.43 And then people are going like, yeah, and then he said, 00:49:27.46\00:49:30.47 "The bad news is the money is in your pocket." 00:49:30.50\00:49:32.83 So this is something that is important and we want. 00:49:32.87\00:49:35.97 If the Holy Spirit is inspiring you as you watch, 00:49:36.00\00:49:39.54 if your hearts been moved 00:49:39.57\00:49:40.91 in thinking about rescuing these young girls 00:49:40.94\00:49:43.98 from this horrible genital mutilation 00:49:44.01\00:49:47.25 and being married off at such a young age or, 00:49:47.28\00:49:50.59 and letting these people come to know the truth. 00:49:50.62\00:49:53.36 If you would like to become involved in any way 00:49:53.39\00:49:56.42 or donate to this ministry, 00:49:56.46\00:49:58.63 here is how you can get in touch 00:49:58.66\00:50:00.06 with the Maasai Development Project. 00:50:00.10\00:50:02.10 If you'd like to learn more about 00:50:06.53\00:50:07.87 the Maasai Development Project 00:50:07.90\00:50:09.24 or if you'd like to support this ministry, 00:50:09.27\00:50:10.97 you can write to, Maasai Development Project 00:50:11.01\00:50:14.04 PO Box 6816 Spokane, WA 99217 00:50:14.08\00:50:19.11 That's, Maasai Development Project 00:50:19.15\00:50:21.38 PO Box 6816 Spokane, WA 99217 00:50:21.42\00:50:26.86 You can call them at, (509) 443-5666. 00:50:26.89\00:50:31.39 That's, (509) 443-5666 00:50:31.43\00:50:35.46 You can also visit them online at 4mdp.org. 00:50:35.50\00:50:40.34 That's 4mdp.org. 00:50:40.37\00:50:45.61 If the Holy Spirit is impressing you, 00:50:48.68\00:50:50.55 I'm sure they would appreciate any support 00:50:50.58\00:50:52.65 that you can give them. 00:50:52.68\00:50:54.05 Jan, tell us what your future plans are 00:50:54.08\00:50:57.75 for the Maasai Development Project? 00:50:57.79\00:51:00.66 Well, we want to continue expanding our lay pastors. 00:51:00.69\00:51:04.03 I said earlier 00:51:04.06\00:51:05.39 that we had stepped out in faith and hired. 00:51:05.43\00:51:07.00 We just hired six more, besides that one. 00:51:07.03\00:51:09.86 And that was, that's all on faith. 00:51:09.90\00:51:12.83 And so, but we want to continue expanding 00:51:12.87\00:51:14.94 into un-entered areas of Maasai land. 00:51:14.97\00:51:18.31 With our centre, we just want to-- 00:51:18.34\00:51:21.88 we want to continue growing that, 00:51:21.91\00:51:23.35 we want to expand it to have a place 00:51:23.38\00:51:27.95 where women and widows can come. 00:51:27.98\00:51:30.29 And they can learn cookery. 00:51:30.32\00:51:33.62 We're already teaching our children cook bakery. 00:51:33.66\00:51:35.79 We have a charcoal, 00:51:35.82\00:51:37.43 putting charcoal in the little oven 00:51:37.46\00:51:39.39 and they're learning how to bake and everything. 00:51:39.43\00:51:41.43 So-- 00:51:41.46\00:51:42.80 This is sort of the skill for which they could end up 00:51:42.83\00:51:44.77 actually gaining gainful employment from. 00:51:44.80\00:51:47.27 That's right, 00:51:47.30\00:51:48.64 because where we are out in the Mara, 00:51:48.67\00:51:52.44 there's all these tent camps and the safari camps. 00:51:52.47\00:51:55.54 And so they can go and get jobs as a house cleaner 00:51:55.58\00:51:58.91 or they could go as a cook or a baker or whatever. 00:51:58.95\00:52:02.55 So, and then we want to give them other skills 00:52:02.58\00:52:06.42 and just for those who've never learnt to read, 00:52:06.45\00:52:08.66 we want to give them that opportunity 00:52:08.69\00:52:10.29 to learn to read, 00:52:10.33\00:52:11.66 so they can read the Bible for themselves. 00:52:11.69\00:52:13.46 So when these girls grow up, 00:52:13.50\00:52:15.60 after they've gone through your school, 00:52:15.63\00:52:17.00 you've seen generations now, 00:52:17.03\00:52:18.53 do they have a totally different life 00:52:18.57\00:52:20.87 because of the education, 00:52:20.90\00:52:22.24 because of what they have learnt? 00:52:22.27\00:52:25.37 Yes, they do. 00:52:25.41\00:52:28.44 Like I said, we're just now getting-- 00:52:28.48\00:52:30.41 We have two girls that have just finished college. 00:52:30.45\00:52:33.42 And we have five going 00:52:33.45\00:52:35.02 and now next year will have seven going 00:52:35.05\00:52:37.65 and that are graduating from high school, 00:52:37.69\00:52:39.09 so this is a work, kind of panicking here, 00:52:39.12\00:52:41.62 I mean, this is the big growth for us 00:52:41.66\00:52:43.19 because our goal is to see them through 00:52:43.22\00:52:45.23 as far as they can go. 00:52:45.26\00:52:47.60 Because then they come back and help out their homes. 00:52:47.63\00:52:52.83 It makes a huge impact. 00:52:52.87\00:52:54.54 We have one young girl right now 00:52:54.57\00:52:56.20 and I'll just quickly tell you her mother was one 00:52:56.24\00:53:00.04 that was very supportive of us when we came. 00:53:00.08\00:53:02.04 We even gave her a job. 00:53:02.08\00:53:04.35 And the girl is now in form three in high school. 00:53:04.38\00:53:08.85 And we-- 00:53:08.88\00:53:11.15 but her mom took her and told her 00:53:11.19\00:53:18.09 she wanted her to come away from MDP. 00:53:18.13\00:53:21.53 And she told her mom, she goes, 00:53:21.56\00:53:23.30 "Mom, someday I am going to become a great woman, 00:53:23.33\00:53:27.14 and a woman of promise." 00:53:27.17\00:53:28.77 Praise God. 00:53:28.80\00:53:30.14 And she said, "And where will you be? 00:53:30.17\00:53:31.87 Ooh, praise the Lord. 00:53:31.91\00:53:33.58 And so, have we made a difference? 00:53:33.61\00:53:35.54 Already. Amen. 00:53:35.58\00:53:37.21 Well, we're gonna have to take a quick break here 00:53:37.25\00:53:39.25 and go to a newsbreak, 00:53:39.28\00:53:40.62 but we're gonna come back for closing thought 00:53:40.65\00:53:42.48 with Jan and Terri in just a moment. 00:53:42.52\00:53:44.42
