Okay. They divorced. 00:07:51.80\00:07:53.67 And my mom is actually being attacked by my dad frequently, 00:07:53.70\00:07:56.81 and so she had to get find a way 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.17 into a woman's shelter and we eventually moved away. 00:07:58.21\00:08:01.24 My dad got locked up for some time. 00:08:01.28\00:08:03.35 And when he got out, he tried to do better with his life 00:08:03.38\00:08:05.95 and get a victory over his alcoholism 00:08:05.98\00:08:09.22 and various things and he did pretty good, 00:08:09.25\00:08:11.19 because he wanted to get custody back of us kids 00:08:11.22\00:08:13.02 and so we-- 00:08:13.05\00:08:15.22 He tried hard and he eventually won the custody back, 00:08:15.26\00:08:18.09 partial custody, so we're back and forth 00:08:18.13\00:08:19.79 between my mom and my dad quite a bit. 00:08:19.83\00:08:21.90 But the violence didn't end 00:08:21.93\00:08:23.26 and my dad continued to use drugs 00:08:23.30\00:08:25.00 and it was still a mess. 00:08:25.03\00:08:27.57 So how did that affect you as a young child growing up? 00:08:27.60\00:08:31.54 I know, you said, that there was an event 00:08:31.57\00:08:33.14 when you were six years old that made the newspapers. 00:08:33.17\00:08:37.15 Yes, it was definitely a time 00:08:37.18\00:08:39.71 when I was living with my mother 00:08:39.75\00:08:41.08 in Jefferson City, Missouri. 00:08:41.12\00:08:42.45 And we would just run the streets, 00:08:42.48\00:08:44.59 my mom worked three jobs to just-- 00:08:44.62\00:08:46.52 even when we were living in the projects over there 00:08:46.55\00:08:48.66 and-- 00:08:48.69\00:08:50.03 And how many children? 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.39 There is three of us, so there's my older brother, 00:08:51.43\00:08:52.76 two years older, 00:08:52.79\00:08:54.13 and my younger sister three years younger, 00:08:54.16\00:08:55.50 and the three of us, we just-- 00:08:55.53\00:08:57.10 My sisters stayed with a babysitter, 00:08:57.13\00:08:58.47 my brother and I, we took off and would run the streets. 00:08:58.50\00:09:01.60 And even at six years old, we would go into stores 00:09:01.64\00:09:04.47 and steal things and because we were little kids, 00:09:04.51\00:09:07.28 we can hide them and get out easy, it wasn't a big deal. 00:09:07.31\00:09:09.21 You were a little hoodlums, weren't you? 00:09:09.24\00:09:11.21 That's a good word for it. 00:09:11.25\00:09:13.58 But we started setting little fires here and there. 00:09:13.62\00:09:17.02 And just playing with fires, kids, 00:09:17.05\00:09:19.99 and one fire got out of control 00:09:20.02\00:09:22.32 and burning down a whole house and-- 00:09:22.36\00:09:25.03 So some firefighters were hurt in that accident. 00:09:25.06\00:09:28.43 Well, we wouldn't call it accident that child crime, 00:09:28.46\00:09:32.63 so they arrested us kids, 00:09:32.67\00:09:34.10 and even took custody from my mom. 00:09:34.14\00:09:36.00 And so that she's actually still heard about that recently 00:09:36.04\00:09:39.91 when she tried to adopt. 00:09:39.94\00:09:41.88 And so, they remembered back to the time 00:09:41.91\00:09:44.11 that we got in trouble. 00:09:44.15\00:09:46.31 So then they did? 00:09:46.35\00:09:48.12 Did they permanently remove custody from your mother? 00:09:48.15\00:09:51.15 No, it wasn't permanent, 00:09:51.19\00:09:52.52 but it definitely caused some friction there growing up. 00:09:52.55\00:09:56.32 And, of course, 00:09:56.36\00:09:57.69 my dad has always wanted custody of his kids back. 00:09:57.73\00:10:00.03 And both my parents remarried 00:10:00.06\00:10:01.40 and so I inherited some step-siblings, 00:10:01.43\00:10:03.87 and a half sister later and we-- 00:10:03.90\00:10:07.30 It was, it was very interesting 00:10:07.34\00:10:09.30 because my dad continued in his violence. 00:10:09.34\00:10:11.47 I would still see him beat up my step mom quite often 00:10:11.51\00:10:14.74 and he would even-- 00:10:14.78\00:10:16.11 At one time he broke the headlights. 00:10:16.14\00:10:17.85 She threatened to leave. 00:10:17.88\00:10:19.21 Well, he went outside and broke the headlights of her car. 00:10:19.25\00:10:21.08 So she couldn't go anywhere. This is at night. 00:10:21.12\00:10:23.22 So what you're saying, 00:10:23.25\00:10:24.59 you're painting a picture of something 00:10:24.62\00:10:26.22 and many of you watching 00:10:26.25\00:10:28.69 actually have probably experienced something like this 00:10:28.72\00:10:32.39 in your life or aware of something that goes on 00:10:32.43\00:10:34.46 because, any time that there's this sickness of alcoholism 00:10:34.50\00:10:38.03 or drug addiction. 00:10:38.07\00:10:39.77 There's just a complete chaos around it, 00:10:39.80\00:10:42.54 that there is dysfunction. 00:10:42.57\00:10:44.31 And it happens, it crosses every-- 00:10:44.34\00:10:48.48 There's no borders, 00:10:48.51\00:10:49.84 it crosses every social economic range if you will. 00:10:49.88\00:10:55.02 It must have been so confusing for you as a child. 00:10:55.05\00:10:58.05 Now, take us forward to your pre-teen years, 00:10:58.09\00:11:01.72 when you started or just as you're becoming a teenager. 00:11:01.76\00:11:05.16 You actually went a step further 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.83 than just pranks and petty crime. 00:11:07.86\00:11:11.40 You became involved with a very questionable group, 00:11:11.43\00:11:16.74 tell us about that? 00:11:16.77\00:11:18.11 Well, there was-- 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.58 And by the way, Shelley, there is definitely, 00:11:20.61\00:11:22.64 when I share my story with people, 00:11:22.68\00:11:24.01 I do find that there's a lot of people 00:11:24.05\00:11:26.18 that has experienced some more things 00:11:26.21\00:11:27.88 and I think that's why my story resonates 00:11:27.92\00:11:29.38 is because it does, it strikes the chord. 00:11:29.42\00:11:32.25 People have been through these experiences and-- 00:11:32.29\00:11:36.46 You know, the good news is that there is hope, 00:11:36.49\00:11:38.59 there is redemption in all that. 00:11:38.63\00:11:40.63 And that's the story I'm really wanting to tell 00:11:40.66\00:11:42.63 but it did, it did get pretty worse. 00:11:42.66\00:11:45.37 I was diagnosed as having ADHD. 00:11:45.40\00:11:48.40 And so, I was put on medications 00:11:48.44\00:11:50.57 and, and I, even though I try to do okay in school, 00:11:50.61\00:11:53.64 I never really succeeded too well. 00:11:53.68\00:11:55.08 I wasn't very popular kid and pretty much a loner. 00:11:55.11\00:11:58.61 And I remember back was '98 was it or '99 Eric Harris, 00:11:58.65\00:12:03.69 and Dylan Klebold does that, 00:12:03.72\00:12:05.25 shut up the school there at Columbine. 00:12:05.29\00:12:08.12 And that pretty much was the scene 00:12:08.16\00:12:11.19 that I was in during the same time. 00:12:11.23\00:12:13.56 And I was, I got involved in-- 00:12:13.60\00:12:16.97 I was listening to heavy metal music. 00:12:17.00\00:12:18.33 I was getting involved into the occult. 00:12:18.37\00:12:20.74 I was reading books on witchcraft, playing, 00:12:20.77\00:12:22.60 role playing games like dungeons and dragons 00:12:22.64\00:12:24.77 and Magic: The Gathering 00:12:24.81\00:12:26.31 and reading these fantasy books. 00:12:26.34\00:12:27.84 And so, I was really entering 00:12:27.88\00:12:29.21 into this whole isolated spiritualistic type mentality. 00:12:29.24\00:12:35.82 Kingdom of darkness. 00:12:35.85\00:12:37.19 It was definitely the kingdom of darkness. 00:12:37.22\00:12:38.89 Well, as I dabbled in it more and more 00:12:38.92\00:12:41.22 and I was introduced into meeting people 00:12:41.26\00:12:42.99 that were into the same thing. 00:12:43.02\00:12:44.83 One man, he performed a spell on me, a Satanist. 00:12:44.86\00:12:47.86 And he really encouraged me to go out and find, 00:12:47.90\00:12:51.07 but his spell worked, it was, it was magical. 00:12:51.10\00:12:53.44 It really was satanic magic I see now, 00:12:53.47\00:12:55.50 but it was power to me back then. 00:12:55.54\00:12:58.97 Anyway he encouraged me to go out 00:12:59.01\00:13:00.34 and get a Satanic Bible. 00:13:00.38\00:13:01.71 And so I went out and got a Satanic Bible, 00:13:01.74\00:13:03.08 begin to read it. 00:13:03.11\00:13:04.45 And just I loved it. It told me I was a God. 00:13:04.48\00:13:07.45 Just which is the lie of Satan, 00:13:07.48\00:13:08.82 you've always heard from the Garden of Eden. 00:13:08.85\00:13:11.42 And, and so I-- 00:13:11.45\00:13:14.02 You know, I believed it and I really wanted power. 00:13:14.06\00:13:16.93 I wanted acceptance and belonging 00:13:16.96\00:13:20.26 and, and that's where I found it in that. 00:13:20.30\00:13:23.77 But, you know, this is not the only thing going on 00:13:23.80\00:13:25.27 in my life. 00:13:25.30\00:13:26.77 It's just at the same time getting involved in drugs 00:13:26.80\00:13:30.34 and alcohol, and for myself 00:13:30.37\00:13:33.58 just finding myself at every party I could. 00:13:33.61\00:13:36.41 So you're seeing. 00:13:36.44\00:13:37.78 You know, you see a pattern developing here. 00:13:37.81\00:13:40.42 First of all, you were at a tender young age 00:13:40.45\00:13:43.15 things were so confusing. 00:13:43.18\00:13:44.52 You felt powerless over your circumstances. 00:13:44.55\00:13:47.49 So this is why kids do get involved with witchcraft. 00:13:47.52\00:13:51.36 They do get involved with the powers of darkness, 00:13:51.39\00:13:55.40 as they're just, they don't even know 00:13:55.43\00:13:57.47 that God's got a power available too. 00:13:57.50\00:13:59.43 You know, I always felt judged by Christians, 00:13:59.47\00:14:01.60 so I never liked Christians. Okay. 00:14:01.64\00:14:03.20 And even though my mom would send me to church 00:14:03.24\00:14:05.21 every once in a while as a kid. 00:14:05.24\00:14:06.64 I never felt of belonging there. 00:14:06.68\00:14:08.84 But among the Satanists 00:14:08.88\00:14:10.55 and when I was involved in Wicca 00:14:10.58\00:14:12.01 and witchcraft and the gothic group. 00:14:12.05\00:14:14.65 I felt welcomed, I felt accepted. 00:14:14.68\00:14:17.02 And they didn't judge me for my curly hair, 00:14:17.05\00:14:19.49 or my weirdness that I had or my music I listen to. 00:14:19.52\00:14:23.56 And because of that, you know, I liked it and... 00:14:23.59\00:14:28.53 Explain to us what Gothic is? Gothic. 00:14:28.56\00:14:31.40 Well, that was, that was a short time, 00:14:31.43\00:14:33.13 when we, when we went to our parties 00:14:33.17\00:14:35.67 and raves or whatever we would dress up. 00:14:35.70\00:14:39.07 There's a movie called, The Crow, and there we just, 00:14:39.11\00:14:41.11 we put a face paint on and black eye shadow, 00:14:41.14\00:14:45.18 lipstick, fingernail polish. 00:14:45.21\00:14:47.02 These are the guys too. 00:14:47.05\00:14:48.52 And their face would be pasty and various things like that 00:14:48.55\00:14:51.55 and so, it was just, 00:14:51.59\00:14:53.46 it was a whole subculture of gloomy darkness. 00:14:53.49\00:14:57.96 But now, people who dress like that 00:14:57.99\00:15:00.20 aren't necessarily Satanists. 00:15:00.23\00:15:02.20 The Gothics are not necessarily Satanists, 00:15:02.23\00:15:04.07 but there's a lot of Satanists who are Gothic, isn't it? 00:15:04.10\00:15:07.14 Right, they're not mutually exclusive, they are-- 00:15:07.17\00:15:09.50 Let me say this right. 00:15:09.54\00:15:10.87 They're mutually-- 00:15:10.91\00:15:12.24 I'm not sure exactly what I'm saying. 00:15:12.27\00:15:13.61 They're two separate groups but there's crossovers. 00:15:13.64\00:15:15.88 You got it. Okay. 00:15:15.91\00:15:17.25 So you have the gothic on one side of that. 00:15:17.28\00:15:19.35 Many of them are involved in witchcraft, 00:15:19.38\00:15:21.15 in the occult or even into Satanism. 00:15:21.18\00:15:23.45 But not all Satanists dress like that. 00:15:23.49\00:15:25.05 Some Satanists would walk around, 00:15:25.09\00:15:26.42 you wouldn't even know it. 00:15:26.45\00:15:27.79 Now, if you've heard of the stories 00:15:27.82\00:15:29.16 of like Roger Morneau. 00:15:29.19\00:15:30.76 And he was deep into Satanism, I was more on the dabbler side. 00:15:30.79\00:15:35.26 But you are looking for power on one side, 00:15:35.30\00:15:37.97 and that's why you're studying the occult 00:15:38.00\00:15:40.44 and feeling acceptance. 00:15:40.47\00:15:42.47 But at the other time, if you're doing these drugs. 00:15:42.50\00:15:45.07 What kind of drugs were you doing? 00:15:45.11\00:15:46.78 Well, mostly marijuana, 00:15:46.81\00:15:48.14 but we did everything we can get our, our hands on. 00:15:48.18\00:15:49.78 So this was kind of, you were trying to escape, 00:15:49.81\00:15:51.88 it's a means of escape. 00:15:51.91\00:15:54.25 So you see the conflict in this message here. 00:15:54.28\00:15:57.55 You were doing drugs as an escape 00:15:57.59\00:15:59.29 and yet you're seeking this power. 00:15:59.32\00:16:01.79 So what happened to you 00:16:01.82\00:16:04.79 as you were just dabbling in this, 00:16:04.83\00:16:07.70 something very serious happened? 00:16:07.73\00:16:09.56 Well, you can't dabble in darkness too long 00:16:09.60\00:16:11.13 before you get out so far, 00:16:11.17\00:16:12.50 you don't know where you're at. 00:16:12.53\00:16:13.87 And my life was just spiraling out of control 00:16:13.90\00:16:15.77 and because of the drug use I was doing. 00:16:15.80\00:16:19.21 We were committing all kinds of crimes from vandalism 00:16:19.24\00:16:21.48 to burglaries to assaults. 00:16:21.51\00:16:23.85 You know, we were getting arrested 00:16:23.88\00:16:25.28 for possession many times, 00:16:25.31\00:16:26.65 because I was a juvenile, you know, 00:16:26.68\00:16:28.02 this whole occult Satanism thing happened 00:16:28.05\00:16:30.62 when I was about 14 years old. 00:16:30.65\00:16:32.59 And at 15, I mean my life was just uncontrollable. 00:16:32.62\00:16:35.96 I mean, I slept through school 00:16:35.99\00:16:37.86 because I partied all night long, 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.56 and so I had straight F's in school. 00:16:39.59\00:16:41.83 And this was ninth grade and so I just had no desire 00:16:41.86\00:16:46.17 to succeed in life. 00:16:46.20\00:16:47.54 I just wanted to party, have fun and do my drugs. 00:16:47.57\00:16:50.31 How was your mom during all of this? 00:16:50.34\00:16:52.17 What was her feeling? She was heartbroken. 00:16:52.21\00:16:54.54 And this is the tragic thing about it. 00:16:54.58\00:16:56.44 A selfish life isn't just about self, 00:16:56.48\00:16:59.01 it breaks other hearts. 00:16:59.05\00:17:00.52 Yes, it does. I need to give example. 00:17:00.55\00:17:02.18 I would run away from home, 00:17:02.22\00:17:03.55 basically I would be out partying, come home. 00:17:03.59\00:17:05.15 My lights are on, I was busted. 00:17:05.19\00:17:06.89 Well, forget about going home, I just went back to the party 00:17:06.92\00:17:09.02 and stayed out for several days to a couple weeks. 00:17:09.06\00:17:11.66 You know, you can imagine what that's going to do 00:17:11.69\00:17:13.43 to a mom's heart, now sure I was 15. 00:17:13.46\00:17:15.46 But I was still my mommy's baby, right. 00:17:15.50\00:17:16.83 Right. 00:17:16.87\00:17:18.20 She actually had to post a want, 00:17:18.23\00:17:19.83 I mean, not a wanted poster but-- 00:17:19.87\00:17:21.20 A missing poster. 00:17:21.24\00:17:22.57 A missing poster for you 00:17:22.60\00:17:24.27 when you were just 15 years old. 00:17:24.31\00:17:25.64 She did it, and, you know, 00:17:25.67\00:17:27.14 and I had my friends all saying, 00:17:27.18\00:17:28.51 "Your mom is looking for you, 00:17:28.54\00:17:29.88 the police are looking for you." 00:17:29.91\00:17:31.25 And I was, I was eventually caught several times 00:17:31.28\00:17:33.52 after doing this and arrested. 00:17:33.55\00:17:35.88 And it was actually after the final 00:17:35.92\00:17:38.35 or I think it was three or maybe even four times 00:17:38.39\00:17:40.16 I got arrested. 00:17:40.19\00:17:41.52 But every time I was arrested, 00:17:41.56\00:17:42.89 I was positive for drugs or I had drugs on me. 00:17:42.92\00:17:45.39 And so they finally said, you know what? 00:17:45.43\00:17:46.76 We're tired of this. 00:17:46.80\00:17:48.20 Because they kept slapping me on the wrist and let me go. 00:17:48.23\00:17:50.40 But they finally said, "We're sending you to drug rehab. 00:17:50.43\00:17:52.63 We're going to do something about this." 00:17:52.67\00:17:55.27 And so how effective was drug rehab for you? 00:17:55.30\00:17:57.97 Well, I hated it. 00:17:58.01\00:17:59.34 I didn't want to go, I wanted my drugs. 00:17:59.37\00:18:00.71 I didn't want to, you know, stop using them. 00:18:00.74\00:18:03.78 My parties was all I live for, my music, my friends and-- 00:18:03.81\00:18:07.68 So it was actually, it was during the time in drug rehab 00:18:07.72\00:18:11.22 that they sent me to into a prison 00:18:11.25\00:18:12.95 to try to scare me straight. 00:18:12.99\00:18:14.92 Of course, that just hardened me more 00:18:14.96\00:18:16.32 because as I've learned now, fear is not a good motivator. 00:18:16.36\00:18:20.53 It may work sometime. 00:18:20.56\00:18:23.23 But it's not going to keep you on the right path 00:18:23.26\00:18:25.13 and so anyway. 00:18:25.17\00:18:29.44 I definitely planned on using drugs 00:18:29.47\00:18:31.54 after getting out of rehab. 00:18:31.57\00:18:32.91 But I was gonna play their game while I was there. 00:18:32.94\00:18:34.74 Okay, so you were pretty savvy as a kid. 00:18:34.78\00:18:37.55 Now, you had a run in with one of the counselors? 00:18:37.58\00:18:41.98 That's the tragic part of the story. 00:18:42.02\00:18:45.05 A story that I wish, I could tell without adding this part 00:18:45.09\00:18:48.36 but it is, this is vital. 00:18:48.39\00:18:50.83 My-- 00:18:50.86\00:18:52.19 I was, I was sneaking cigarettes. 00:18:52.23\00:18:53.56 I thought I was playing the game 00:18:53.60\00:18:54.93 but I wasn't very good at it. 00:18:54.96\00:18:56.30 So I was smoking cigarettes and I eventually got caught. 00:18:56.33\00:18:59.30 And the counselor who caught me had to report me 00:18:59.33\00:19:02.27 and I begged him not to and he just, 00:19:02.30\00:19:05.64 he had to do his job and he made me do a report. 00:19:05.67\00:19:08.24 And I knew, I was going to get kicked out of the program. 00:19:08.28\00:19:10.35 In fact, kicked out the program, 00:19:10.38\00:19:11.71 there is, all these consequences waiting for me. 00:19:11.75\00:19:14.12 And I just didn't want that, 00:19:14.15\00:19:15.48 and so I had the most imaginable anger 00:19:15.52\00:19:18.89 and just hatred, that you can imagine a person ever 00:19:18.92\00:19:21.86 having a murder in my heart. 00:19:21.89\00:19:23.83 I prayed to Satan. I asked him for power. 00:19:27.73\00:19:31.33 And then and there, 00:19:31.37\00:19:33.13 I cast a spell of destruction on this guy. 00:19:33.17\00:19:35.84 And as I went to attack him with a knife, 00:19:35.87\00:19:40.08 he got hurt really bad. 00:19:40.11\00:19:42.41 And he went to the hospital and I ended up 00:19:42.44\00:19:45.58 of course getting locked up 00:19:45.61\00:19:46.95 in the juvenile detention center for that. 00:19:46.98\00:19:48.82 I was 15 years old. 00:19:48.85\00:19:50.75 Fifteen years old, 00:19:50.79\00:19:52.12 and what was the outcome of that? 00:19:52.15\00:19:54.92 Well, I was-- 00:19:54.96\00:19:57.69 Were you taken to trial? Were you sentenced? 00:19:57.73\00:20:00.06 Well, that's a long story. 00:20:00.10\00:20:02.03 I was actually-- 00:20:02.06\00:20:03.67 I sat at the juvenile detention center for a year 00:20:03.70\00:20:06.43 waiting to be certified as an adult 00:20:06.47\00:20:07.90 because at 15 year old, 00:20:07.94\00:20:09.27 they don't typically send to prison. 00:20:09.30\00:20:10.81 But what they say, when the crime is severe enough 00:20:10.84\00:20:12.54 they might, so I had to, I had to wait for a year 00:20:12.57\00:20:15.01 to find out whether or not I was competent 00:20:15.04\00:20:17.08 to stand trial as an adult. 00:20:17.11\00:20:18.45 And after a year they said, "I finally was." 00:20:18.48\00:20:20.08 I was 16 then. 00:20:20.12\00:20:21.45 And that's when they send me to county jail. 00:20:21.48\00:20:24.45 But that's not before something incredible happened. 00:20:24.49\00:20:26.72 Okay. And that's-- 00:20:26.76\00:20:28.09 So I mean, I love it when you kind of hit it with it, 00:20:28.12\00:20:31.79 hit us with it, then you drop back 00:20:31.83\00:20:33.33 because even as lost as you were, 00:20:33.36\00:20:36.10 you have written. 00:20:36.13\00:20:37.47 He has written an incredible book. 00:20:37.50\00:20:39.67 And it's called, "The Least of the Least: 00:20:39.70\00:20:42.97 From Crime to Christ." 00:20:43.00\00:20:45.37 This book is something that will bring 00:20:45.41\00:20:48.71 hope and encouragement to anybody, 00:20:48.74\00:20:50.81 that you're never too far gone. 00:20:50.85\00:20:52.81 So here why you are, you have really messed man up. 00:20:52.85\00:20:59.42 You've been, you committed a violent crime 00:20:59.45\00:21:02.92 by the power of Satan, 00:21:02.96\00:21:04.53 praying specifically to Satan for this destruction. 00:21:04.56\00:21:08.06 But something happens to you 00:21:08.10\00:21:10.27 while you're being detained this 15 year old kid. 00:21:10.30\00:21:13.84 What happens? 00:21:13.87\00:21:15.20 Well, I definitely wasn't going. 00:21:15.24\00:21:16.87 First of all, I became suicidal. 00:21:16.91\00:21:18.67 I didn't want to live. 00:21:18.71\00:21:20.04 I mean, I knew that my life was over. 00:21:20.08\00:21:22.41 The guy, I didn't know, if he lived or died 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.08 from this crime. 00:21:24.11\00:21:25.45 I found out a couple weeks later, 00:21:25.48\00:21:26.82 he did live but he had incredible injuries. 00:21:26.85\00:21:30.05 It was terrible, he was in the hospital 00:21:30.09\00:21:31.42 for a few days-- 00:21:31.45\00:21:32.79 Did you feel remorse? 00:21:32.82\00:21:34.22 No, I felt angry that I got caught. 00:21:34.26\00:21:36.93 You know, that I had to go through all this. 00:21:36.96\00:21:39.06 And I didn't feel remorse. 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.00 I hated life, I hated my family, 00:21:41.03\00:21:44.27 I hated everybody. 00:21:44.30\00:21:46.20 You hated yourself, didn't you? 00:21:46.23\00:21:47.57 Well, I must have, 00:21:47.60\00:21:48.94 I didn't think of it like that because, I meant. 00:21:48.97\00:21:50.31 Again even the Satanic Bible when I read it, 00:21:50.34\00:21:52.44 it talked about, you know, 00:21:52.47\00:21:53.81 loving yourself is one of the ultimate things. 00:21:53.84\00:21:56.38 In fact, the Satanic Bible, for those that are listening. 00:21:56.41\00:21:59.01 It's absolutely the opposite of the Christian Bible. 00:21:59.05\00:22:03.18 And so, it takes like the... 00:22:03.22\00:22:05.19 Where Jesus says, "Turn the other cheek." 00:22:05.22\00:22:07.49 The Satanic Bible says to do just the opposite 00:22:07.52\00:22:10.06 and to smite him back on his cheek. 00:22:10.09\00:22:12.36 It says, you know, 00:22:12.39\00:22:13.73 "It's foolishness to love your enemies." 00:22:13.76\00:22:15.26 What it is worldly speaking, 00:22:15.30\00:22:17.07 foolishness to love your enemies, 00:22:17.10\00:22:18.43 it takes a miracle-- 00:22:18.47\00:22:19.80 Yes. To do that. 00:22:19.83\00:22:21.17 And I just couldn't comprehend that obviously 00:22:21.20\00:22:22.54 because I wasn't converted. 00:22:22.57\00:22:23.91 Yeah. 00:22:23.94\00:22:25.27 So as I'm sitting there 00:22:25.31\00:22:26.64 in this juvenile detention center, 00:22:26.68\00:22:28.01 I mean, I wanted my life to end. 00:22:28.04\00:22:30.18 But I wasn't going to surrender my Satanism. 00:22:30.21\00:22:32.21 And so, I was kind of known early on 00:22:32.25\00:22:34.88 in the juvenile detention centers as a Satanist, 00:22:34.92\00:22:36.99 and I was scratching Satanic symbols, 00:22:37.02\00:22:39.49 you know, in my bunk bed and everything. 00:22:39.52\00:22:41.39 And I was under like 24 hour surveillance. 00:22:41.42\00:22:43.93 But I eventually began, I was good enough 00:22:43.96\00:22:45.99 to start earning some privileges. 00:22:46.03\00:22:47.70 And they let me have some books 00:22:47.73\00:22:50.03 in the juvenile detention center, 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.87 and that's really where my life began to change. 00:22:51.90\00:22:54.67 Because it was your own mother, who was a believer 00:22:54.70\00:22:58.21 but maybe a nominal Christian we could say in her life, 00:22:58.24\00:23:01.21 just from all the circumstances she was facing. 00:23:01.24\00:23:03.98 But it was your mother who encouraged you 00:23:04.01\00:23:06.11 to read the Bible, right? 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.05 You know, we get like 00:23:08.08\00:23:09.42 a ten minute phone call once a week. 00:23:09.45\00:23:10.79 And so, my mom, she asked me, she said, 00:23:10.82\00:23:12.39 "Son, do they have any Bibles in there?" 00:23:12.42\00:23:15.76 And I could look across the room 00:23:15.79\00:23:17.26 and I can see on the bookshelf in the day room 00:23:17.29\00:23:19.39 of this juvenile center that there was some Bibles 00:23:19.43\00:23:21.30 and I had no intention on picking one up. 00:23:21.33\00:23:24.30 But she wanted me to read one and I just, I brushed it off. 00:23:24.33\00:23:28.94 But, you know, the incredible thing, Shelley. 00:23:28.97\00:23:31.17 Day after day as I would walk past that bookshelf 00:23:31.21\00:23:33.44 coming back from my shower, I would-- 00:23:33.48\00:23:36.64 There was something that was just piercing me 00:23:36.68\00:23:38.28 about that book, about the Bible. 00:23:38.31\00:23:40.92 And I finally got in my head, I had a solution. 00:23:40.95\00:23:43.39 I was going to take a Bible. 00:23:43.42\00:23:44.79 I would take it back to my cell, 00:23:44.82\00:23:46.15 and I would prove it wrong. 00:23:46.19\00:23:47.96 You see, the Satanic Bible says, that, 00:23:47.99\00:23:50.39 that the Christian Bible is riddled full 00:23:50.43\00:23:51.96 of contradictions and errors. 00:23:51.99\00:23:53.80 And so that was a simple, simple task. 00:23:53.83\00:23:57.17 Find the contradictions, find the errors, 00:23:57.20\00:23:58.83 and put the Christians in their place. 00:23:58.87\00:24:00.94 And so I snuck the Bible, sorry, I snatch on the self 00:24:00.97\00:24:03.94 before anybody can see me. 00:24:03.97\00:24:05.31 I have to say something. I had a reputation. 00:24:05.34\00:24:06.81 I have to say something. 00:24:06.84\00:24:08.18 Here you are a straight F student. 00:24:08.21\00:24:10.21 But you were really a smart kid and you are-- 00:24:10.25\00:24:13.01 I mean obviously, you're an intelligent person. 00:24:13.05\00:24:14.92 Well, I read a lot. Okay. 00:24:14.95\00:24:16.85 I read a lot, and even when I was a kid, 00:24:16.89\00:24:18.79 even though I wasn't getting any good grades. 00:24:18.82\00:24:20.92 I learned to read when I was young. 00:24:20.96\00:24:22.62 And-- 00:24:22.66\00:24:24.16 you learn to read 00:24:24.19\00:24:25.53 and you can do anything with your life. 00:24:25.56\00:24:26.90 Okay, all right. 00:24:26.93\00:24:28.26 So you take this Bible back, you were gonna prove it wrong. 00:24:28.30\00:24:29.96 Yes. 00:24:30.00\00:24:31.33 And I opened it up, of course, you begin a Bible 00:24:31.37\00:24:33.13 or a book in the beginning 00:24:33.17\00:24:34.50 so that's all I knew the Bible was. 00:24:34.54\00:24:36.50 I began to read. 00:24:36.54\00:24:38.37 And I started there in Genesis Chapter 1 00:24:38.41\00:24:40.38 and I read and I read and I read. 00:24:40.41\00:24:42.44 And of course when you're locked in your cell 00:24:42.48\00:24:43.81 about 23 hours a day, 00:24:43.85\00:24:45.58 you can do a lot of reading. 00:24:45.61\00:24:47.25 And so, I was, I mean, I was encountering stories, 00:24:47.28\00:24:50.79 I had never heard of before, I mean fantastic stories. 00:24:50.82\00:24:54.06 I mean of a global flood, and of a sun standing still. 00:24:54.09\00:24:57.26 I mean can you imagine reading these things 00:24:57.29\00:24:58.63 for the very first time in your life, 00:24:58.66\00:25:00.00 giants in the land. 00:25:00.03\00:25:02.06 And I always thought, you know, David and Goliath was a myth. 00:25:02.10\00:25:05.53 I didn't know it was from the Bible. 00:25:05.57\00:25:07.27 And, but here it is right in front of me 00:25:07.30\00:25:10.17 all these incredible things happening, 00:25:10.21\00:25:12.57 and even though, I was hardened against this. 00:25:12.61\00:25:15.24 And by the way, not finding the contradictions and errors. 00:25:15.28\00:25:17.25 But even as hard as I was, the power of the word 00:25:17.28\00:25:21.28 just has a way to pierce the heart. 00:25:21.32\00:25:22.65 Yes. Yes. 00:25:22.68\00:25:24.05 And I was being softened the whole way through. 00:25:24.09\00:25:28.06 And I began to sympathize with God. 00:25:28.09\00:25:31.96 Because these people that God was always chasing 00:25:31.99\00:25:34.10 were some stubborn people. 00:25:34.13\00:25:36.33 And I'm like, you know, get rid of them already. 00:25:36.36\00:25:38.73 I really sympathize with Moses you know. 00:25:38.77\00:25:41.40 Like when God says, "I'm just going to destroy, 00:25:41.44\00:25:43.24 I'm going to start over with Moses with Moses." 00:25:43.27\00:25:45.41 I'm like, "Yes, to hell with Moses, 00:25:45.44\00:25:47.18 they don't have anything common." 00:25:47.21\00:25:48.78 And, but Moses, you know, answered that call 00:25:48.81\00:25:52.38 to stand up and say, "Please, God save your people." 00:25:52.41\00:25:54.62 If you want to-- 00:25:54.65\00:25:55.98 He didn't understand that. 00:25:56.02\00:25:57.35 If you want to blow, I mean, to think of that love 00:25:57.39\00:25:58.72 for Moses to be able to stand up and say, 00:25:59.25\00:26:01.52 Lord, blot my name out of your book of life 00:26:01.56\00:26:04.89 and save your people." 00:26:04.93\00:26:06.63 I mean he was a pre-figuring Jesus Christ. 00:26:06.66\00:26:09.96 I mean that love was in his heart. 00:26:10.00\00:26:11.43 He was ready to give up 00:26:11.47\00:26:12.80 his eternal life to save the people. 00:26:12.83\00:26:14.17 And that's a love I have never seen. 00:26:14.20\00:26:16.40 I'm not sure I ever met a Christian in my life. 00:26:16.44\00:26:18.74 What I mean by that is just somebody demonstrating 00:26:18.77\00:26:21.68 that Spirit of Christ like Moses did, like Paul did later. 00:26:21.71\00:26:26.25 Yes. 00:26:26.28\00:26:27.62 And I wonder if I would have met somebody 00:26:27.65\00:26:29.78 with that selfless love, what it would have done to me? 00:26:29.82\00:26:33.25 But I tell you something. 00:26:33.29\00:26:34.86 When I saw it and kept reading, 00:26:34.89\00:26:36.22 I mean even though I didn't understand it, 00:26:36.26\00:26:38.09 I knew it was something I wanted. 00:26:38.13\00:26:40.40 But it wasn't later on, 00:26:40.43\00:26:41.76 until I got to the story of David and Saul. 00:26:41.80\00:26:44.63 I think this is 1 Samuel Chapter 24. 00:26:44.67\00:26:47.07 We have Saul pursuing David. 00:26:47.10\00:26:49.47 You remember the story? Right. 00:26:49.50\00:26:50.84 And David flees into the cave 00:26:50.87\00:26:52.21 and Saul has to use the bathroom, 00:26:52.24\00:26:53.58 so he goes into the cave. 00:26:53.61\00:26:54.94 And while he's in there, David sneaks up behind him, 00:26:54.98\00:26:59.05 and cuts off right a little corner of that robe 00:26:59.08\00:27:02.12 and-- 00:27:02.15\00:27:03.49 And you know, and this was the opportunity. 00:27:03.52\00:27:05.12 And I'm like rooting on with his generals like get him. 00:27:05.15\00:27:07.82 That was the time to get him. 00:27:07.86\00:27:09.19 You know, he's pursuing your life and I'll take his. 00:27:09.22\00:27:11.79 And but when he said, "I can't do this." 00:27:11.83\00:27:14.96 Can't touch the anointed of the God. 00:27:15.00\00:27:16.33 I can't touch the anointed of the Lord. 00:27:16.36\00:27:18.00 And when Saul goes out, David goes out behind him, 00:27:18.03\00:27:20.40 he holds up that little corner of that robe. 00:27:20.44\00:27:24.51 And I can just imagine that how low 00:27:24.54\00:27:26.68 Saul's jaw just dropped when he saw that. 00:27:26.71\00:27:29.34 You think that would have turned him around? 00:27:29.38\00:27:31.45 Well, it did for a moment. 00:27:31.48\00:27:32.91 You know, you know, what I'm saying, 00:27:32.95\00:27:34.28 it just it really touched his heart. 00:27:34.32\00:27:36.85 And he said, "You've been more righteous than I." 00:27:36.89\00:27:38.22 Yeah. 00:27:38.25\00:27:39.59 He said, "You have returned me good for evil, 00:27:39.62\00:27:40.99 I returned you evil for good. 00:27:41.02\00:27:42.69 " And so, when I saw that story-- 00:27:42.72\00:27:46.86 Listen, this is the, this was the turning point 00:27:46.90\00:27:48.90 in my Christian experience. 00:27:48.93\00:27:50.27 Really? 00:27:50.30\00:27:51.63 The beginning of my Christian experience. 00:27:51.67\00:27:53.00 Really? 00:27:53.03\00:27:54.37 I saw that Saul deserved to die 00:27:54.40\00:27:57.57 and David had every right to take his life. 00:27:57.61\00:27:59.67 Yes. 00:27:59.71\00:28:01.04 But David chose to have mercy. 00:28:01.08\00:28:03.45 And so, for the first of my life, 00:28:03.48\00:28:04.81 I'm in Saul's shoes feeling the condemnation, the guilt, 00:28:04.85\00:28:08.78 the heaviness, the reality that I deserve to die 00:28:08.82\00:28:13.32 for what I have done, not just in the crime 00:28:13.36\00:28:15.36 where I assaulted this good man. 00:28:15.39\00:28:17.76 But for all the crimes I have done. 00:28:17.79\00:28:19.63 And yet, God still extends His arm of forgiveness, 00:28:21.00\00:28:24.17 His arm of mercy. 00:28:24.20\00:28:26.23 And says, look, and you're just like, 00:28:26.27\00:28:27.60 just like David held up that cloth. 00:28:27.64\00:28:29.90 So Jesus bleeds His blood for you and me. 00:28:29.94\00:28:31.71 And I tell you, just to taste that, 00:28:31.74\00:28:35.74 it brings me back to right now, just it's-- 00:28:35.78\00:28:37.65 just remembering that the goodness 00:28:37.68\00:28:39.41 and the grace of God that can save somebody. 00:28:39.45\00:28:41.48 And that's where I began my Christian experience. 00:28:41.52\00:28:42.85 But, you know what? 00:28:42.88\00:28:44.22 I'm sitting here thinking is the power of the word. 00:28:44.25\00:28:45.65 A 15 year old child, 00:28:45.69\00:28:48.26 locked away in detention center. 00:28:48.29\00:28:51.19 No formal education at this point. 00:28:51.23\00:28:54.10 I mean you could read well. 00:28:54.13\00:28:55.46 But you're partying and just flunken out of school. 00:28:55.50\00:28:57.90 Oh, yeah. 00:28:57.93\00:28:59.27 And just you and God, 00:28:59.30\00:29:01.00 the Holy Spirit alone in this cell, 00:29:01.04\00:29:03.30 he's teaching you. 00:29:03.34\00:29:04.67 But now, God also send some people to you. 00:29:04.71\00:29:07.08 Tell us about the people who came to visit you? 00:29:07.11\00:29:09.94 Well, that comes later, listen there's miracles, 00:29:09.98\00:29:12.88 miracles start happening at this time. 00:29:12.91\00:29:15.45 I am, you know, now I'm reading the Bible 00:29:15.48\00:29:18.15 not to find the contradictions, not that they were there 00:29:18.19\00:29:20.06 but I couldn't find it anyway. 00:29:20.09\00:29:21.42 But now, I'm reading the scriptures 00:29:21.46\00:29:23.32 to see what's in it for me. 00:29:23.36\00:29:25.36 What kind of teachings are in here. 00:29:25.39\00:29:28.10 And I kept reading, and I have read about how David, 00:29:28.13\00:29:30.00 he had committed a sin with Bathsheba. 00:29:30.03\00:29:32.10 And later was rebuked by Nathan, 00:29:32.13\00:29:34.14 of course he murdered her husband, but you know, 00:29:34.17\00:29:36.87 now here is the same David who gave mercy 00:29:36.91\00:29:39.41 and now he is in the place of needing mercy. 00:29:39.44\00:29:42.74 Yes. 00:29:42.78\00:29:44.11 And when he received that mercy from God. 00:29:44.15\00:29:45.48 Now he still suffered 00:29:45.51\00:29:46.85 the consequences of that sin by the way. 00:29:46.88\00:29:48.22 Yes, he did. Yes, he did. 00:29:48.25\00:29:49.58 And at that moment I realized. 00:29:49.62\00:29:51.95 Even if I become a Christian, 00:29:51.99\00:29:53.32 it doesn't mean God's going to send a key 00:29:53.36\00:29:54.82 to unlock these doors. 00:29:54.86\00:29:56.19 Right. 00:29:56.22\00:29:57.56 I realize there are still consequences for my crimes. 00:29:57.59\00:29:59.59 But there could still be mercy, I could still be saved. 00:29:59.63\00:30:02.86 And so as I kept reading, I come into Psalm 51. 00:30:02.90\00:30:06.17 And, you know, I'm gonna share this with you. 00:30:06.20\00:30:07.54 I love Psalm 51, greatest, greatest psalm of repentances, 00:30:07.57\00:30:10.87 if you ever want to know how to repent, 00:30:10.91\00:30:13.48 just read Psalm 51. 00:30:13.51\00:30:15.34 And this psalm is directly connected with that story 00:30:15.38\00:30:18.18 of Bathsheba being in adultery as well as-- 00:30:18.21\00:30:22.72 This is after Nathan had approached David, 00:30:22.75\00:30:24.82 and this is how David responds. 00:30:24.85\00:30:26.45 Listen to some of these words that David wrote. 00:30:26.49\00:30:29.16 He says, have, this is verse 1, "Have mercy upon me, O God, 00:30:29.19\00:30:32.46 According to Your loving kindness; 00:30:32.49\00:30:34.33 According to the multitude of Your tender mercies, 00:30:34.36\00:30:37.30 Blot out my transgression. 00:30:37.33\00:30:39.80 Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, 00:30:39.83\00:30:41.54 And cleanse me from my sin." 00:30:41.57\00:30:42.90 And, I read all of this and I'm just floored 00:30:42.94\00:30:45.47 at the poetry of this, the beauty of it, 00:30:45.51\00:30:47.74 but also the heart cry, because it became my heart cry. 00:30:47.78\00:30:49.98 Amen. 00:30:50.01\00:30:51.35 And then I came to these words in verse 14. 00:30:51.38\00:30:53.72 "Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God, 00:30:53.75\00:30:57.79 The God of my salvation, And my tongue shall sing aloud 00:30:57.82\00:31:01.56 of Your righteousness." 00:31:01.59\00:31:02.92 I-- 00:31:02.96\00:31:04.29 And if ever that has come true 00:31:04.33\00:31:05.99 those words God has fulfilled in your life. 00:31:06.03\00:31:08.50 I doubted for years. 00:31:08.53\00:31:12.13 I mean and it took me a long time 00:31:12.17\00:31:14.04 to really, really understand what it means 00:31:14.07\00:31:19.27 to be clean of the Lord. 00:31:19.31\00:31:20.74 I struggled with guilt for years 00:31:20.78\00:31:22.11 because of what I had done and forgiveness. 00:31:22.14\00:31:25.15 But I know 100 percent 00:31:25.18\00:31:28.05 that Jesus and the Father are true 00:31:28.08\00:31:30.59 and when they say they forgive you, 00:31:30.62\00:31:31.95 they do indeed. 00:31:31.99\00:31:33.32 And I believe that I've been cleansed 00:31:33.36\00:31:34.69 from this blood guiltiness just as David was. 00:31:34.72\00:31:36.56 Absolutely. 00:31:36.59\00:31:37.93 But it took a long time to realize that. 00:31:37.96\00:31:39.29 I struggled with that for years but I know. 00:31:39.33\00:31:40.66 And there's people out there 00:31:40.70\00:31:42.03 that's done worse things than I have. 00:31:42.06\00:31:43.40 But God can forgive them just the same. 00:31:43.43\00:31:45.63 So as you said though, there were still consequences. 00:31:45.67\00:31:48.67 I'm glad to hear you say you recognize they would be, 00:31:48.70\00:31:51.17 because it wasn't just jailhouse religion. 00:31:51.21\00:31:53.04 You weren't getting in there saying, 00:31:53.07\00:31:54.64 "Okay, Lord I'm gonna accept you 00:31:54.68\00:31:56.64 if you will set me free." 00:31:56.68\00:31:58.45 You knew, He was going to set you free 00:31:58.48\00:31:59.98 in a different way. 00:32:00.02\00:32:01.55 But you did actually, you were tried, 00:32:01.58\00:32:05.29 you were sentenced. 00:32:05.32\00:32:06.65 Yes. 00:32:06.69\00:32:08.02 Well, I was certified as an adult. 00:32:08.06\00:32:09.39 I was now 16 years old, so they sent me to County jail. 00:32:09.42\00:32:11.76 I was 17. I turned 17 in County jail. 00:32:11.79\00:32:14.83 When I was in County jail, 00:32:14.86\00:32:17.60 I met tons of other people that were. 00:32:17.63\00:32:19.63 I'm gonna talk about jailhouse religion, I mean literally, 00:32:19.67\00:32:22.64 they left their Bibles on the bunks when they left. 00:32:22.67\00:32:25.27 You know, how I know this? 00:32:25.31\00:32:26.64 Because they came right back. 00:32:26.68\00:32:28.01 And I saw them again and again. 00:32:28.04\00:32:29.48 But I was eventually went to court 00:32:29.51\00:32:30.85 because I was guilty. 00:32:30.88\00:32:32.21 I was no longer denying what I did. 00:32:32.25\00:32:33.58 I was guilty. 00:32:33.62\00:32:34.95 And so I asked the judge, I didn't go to trial. 00:32:34.98\00:32:36.32 I didn't, I just, I didn't even take a plea bargain. 00:32:36.35\00:32:38.85 I just said, just said, "Judge I did what I did." 00:32:38.89\00:32:42.26 You know, my attorney tried to get me off 00:32:42.29\00:32:44.23 because I was on, 00:32:44.26\00:32:45.59 you know, psychotropic medications 00:32:45.63\00:32:46.96 and I was, you know, always different issues in my past. 00:32:47.00\00:32:50.60 But I said, "Judge, I'm guilty, have mercy." 00:32:50.63\00:32:54.30 And after deliberating on the sentence he came back 00:32:54.34\00:32:57.11 and he said, "Taking everything in consideration. 00:32:57.14\00:33:00.21 He felt that I deserved 20 years in prison." 00:33:00.24\00:33:03.24 And so I sentenced to 20 years in prison. 00:33:03.28\00:33:05.51 And that's when they shackled me up 00:33:05.55\00:33:06.88 and sent me off. 00:33:06.92\00:33:08.38 This is in the prison in Missouri and, actually, 00:33:08.42\00:33:12.02 I was in four different prisons overtime there. 00:33:12.05\00:33:14.19 But, yeah, that, and that is where-- 00:33:14.22\00:33:17.33 I mean just, and my life 00:33:17.36\00:33:18.69 is just a story of miracles Shelley. 00:33:18.73\00:33:20.63 And I know, you know, about miracles 00:33:20.66\00:33:22.00 but listen being a firsthand account 00:33:22.03\00:33:24.27 of all these miracles in my life. 00:33:24.30\00:33:25.63 God protected me for all those years, 00:33:25.67\00:33:29.27 I was incarcerated. 00:33:29.30\00:33:30.64 And when you think about a 16 year old child 00:33:30.67\00:33:34.44 going to prison, to the big house if you will. 00:33:34.48\00:33:36.91 I was 17 by the time I went to the prison, 00:33:36.95\00:33:38.71 16 in county jail, which in my opinion 00:33:38.75\00:33:40.68 County jail was worse than prison 00:33:40.72\00:33:42.05 but it was very rough in County. 00:33:42.08\00:33:44.45 But to think that you went off to the big house, 00:33:44.49\00:33:46.76 but you didn't go alone, God was with you. 00:33:46.79\00:33:49.02 Absolutely. 00:33:49.06\00:33:50.39 Jeremiah, 1:9, one of my favorite scriptures 00:33:50.43\00:33:52.03 I quoted that almost every day. 00:33:52.06\00:33:54.66 But now, and we want to kind of fast forward this 00:33:54.70\00:33:57.50 because I want to take the remaining time, 00:33:57.53\00:34:00.27 a good portion of time to talk about 00:34:00.30\00:34:01.97 what God has done in your life. 00:34:02.00\00:34:03.34 But let's do talk about several things. 00:34:03.37\00:34:05.51 God did send some one to you in prison, 00:34:05.54\00:34:08.44 who ended up baptizing you. 00:34:08.48\00:34:10.21 Tell us how you became, you were a Christian, 00:34:10.25\00:34:12.31 how did you become an Adventist Christian? 00:34:12.35\00:34:14.98 Well, I-- 00:34:15.02\00:34:16.38 He actually did it all way back to juvenile detention 00:34:16.42\00:34:18.19 another miracle. 00:34:18.22\00:34:19.55 My mom sent me a strong concordance. 00:34:19.59\00:34:21.82 And so I began. 00:34:21.86\00:34:23.19 As I became a Christian now, 00:34:23.22\00:34:24.56 I wanted to understand the Bible. 00:34:24.59\00:34:25.93 And my mom won't even sure a book she was getting me, 00:34:25.96\00:34:27.50 she went to the bookstore and said, 00:34:27.53\00:34:28.86 "What should I send, my son is locked up." 00:34:28.90\00:34:30.40 And so, she sent me a new Bible 00:34:30.43\00:34:32.10 and a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance. 00:34:32.13\00:34:34.14 And with that I began studying the scriptures. 00:34:34.17\00:34:35.94 Now, it would take me a couple of years to be an Adventist. 00:34:35.97\00:34:38.67 But I began studying back then. 00:34:38.71\00:34:40.38 The second miracle was my dad getting me a walkman radio. 00:34:40.41\00:34:43.24 And I began to listen, 00:34:43.28\00:34:44.61 this is in Springfield, Missouri, where I was locked up 00:34:44.65\00:34:46.01 in the juvenile detention center. 00:34:46.05\00:34:47.82 So there's lots of Christian radio. 00:34:47.85\00:34:49.88 And I began to listen all these different preachers 00:34:49.92\00:34:52.25 and as I began to filter through all these things, 00:34:52.29\00:34:54.69 I realized that there are so many teachings 00:34:54.72\00:35:00.03 I want to know what the truth is. 00:35:00.06\00:35:01.70 So I began to write all these churches 00:35:01.73\00:35:03.37 and ask what do you believe, what do you believe? 00:35:03.40\00:35:05.10 And when they send me their beliefs, 00:35:05.13\00:35:06.47 I compared them to the scriptures. 00:35:06.50\00:35:08.34 And then one lady 00:35:08.37\00:35:10.11 gave me a book called The Great Controversy. 00:35:10.14\00:35:13.04 And so, I read through that book, 00:35:13.07\00:35:14.78 I breezed through that thing in just a couple of weeks 00:35:14.81\00:35:16.91 and I tell you, it was an incredible journey. 00:35:16.95\00:35:19.98 But I began to see in that book conforming 00:35:20.02\00:35:21.78 all the things I have seen in the Bible. 00:35:21.82\00:35:23.79 And just, all these things adding up 00:35:23.82\00:35:26.25 when I was sent to County jail, I receive some more books 00:35:26.29\00:35:30.93 that were saying the same things 00:35:30.96\00:35:33.40 and just providence let me write to this church 00:35:33.43\00:35:38.07 because I, So I decided in County jail, 00:35:38.10\00:35:40.14 this is the year 2000. 00:35:40.17\00:35:41.50 I decided to become an Adventist, 00:35:41.54\00:35:44.24 the Seventh-day Adventist. 00:35:44.27\00:35:45.61 Okay, so you were still in County, 00:35:45.64\00:35:46.98 so you were been baptized? 00:35:47.01\00:35:48.41 But I couldn't be baptized. 00:35:48.44\00:35:49.84 In the jail there was no place to get baptized. 00:35:49.88\00:35:51.25 Oh, okay. 00:35:51.28\00:35:52.61 And so, that's when I actually went. 00:35:52.65\00:35:54.52 Well, after I was sentenced to the 20 years, 00:35:54.55\00:35:57.72 I went to the prison. 00:35:57.75\00:35:59.09 I did everything I could. 00:35:59.12\00:36:00.46 So I begin to write all these churches 00:36:00.49\00:36:01.82 all across my area and nobody was responding. 00:36:01.86\00:36:05.89 But two eventually did. 00:36:05.93\00:36:07.76 One church responded and they actually started 00:36:07.80\00:36:09.53 a prison ministry in that prison. 00:36:09.56\00:36:11.23 And listen these, these brothers are incredible. 00:36:11.27\00:36:14.94 And the second one is Pastor Dan Kaffenberger 00:36:14.97\00:36:19.31 and this pastor, he actually was able 00:36:19.34\00:36:21.38 to come into the prison and baptize me. 00:36:21.41\00:36:24.05 There he is. 00:36:24.08\00:36:25.71 Yes, and these are dear sisters up on the screen. 00:36:25.75\00:36:28.22 These dear sisters came with him 00:36:28.25\00:36:30.22 and because I was, 00:36:30.25\00:36:32.49 I was pretty obedient so I got privileges. 00:36:32.52\00:36:34.09 They actually was able to bring food in 00:36:34.12\00:36:36.76 on a food visit. 00:36:36.79\00:36:38.13 And it was good vegetarian food, 00:36:38.16\00:36:39.86 it was quality stuff. 00:36:39.89\00:36:41.76 All right, so are they the ones I know that you tell me, 00:36:41.80\00:36:44.77 when we were talking in the green room 00:36:44.80\00:36:46.87 that you actually got to listen to 3ABN 00:36:46.90\00:36:49.64 or watch 3ABN on DVD when you were in prison. 00:36:49.67\00:36:52.17 That's cool. 00:36:52.21\00:36:53.54 I-- 00:36:53.58\00:36:54.91 There is actually a brother named Robert. 00:36:54.94\00:36:56.28 Robert was a volunteer, he was an older gentleman. 00:36:56.31\00:36:58.75 He's passed away since, but he would come in faithfully 00:36:58.78\00:37:01.85 along with his other prison ministers 00:37:01.88\00:37:03.22 like my brother John and Doug. 00:37:03.25\00:37:06.05 But they would, he would come in, 00:37:06.09\00:37:07.46 and he wasn't a preacher. 00:37:07.49\00:37:09.36 But what he could do is bring DVDs 00:37:09.39\00:37:12.09 and so he would show Brother Kenneth Cox 00:37:12.13\00:37:14.00 every, every Sabbath he came in. 00:37:14.03\00:37:16.40 We'd watch Brother Kenneth Cox on the screen. 00:37:16.43\00:37:18.53 But he would leave us with a DVD. 00:37:18.57\00:37:20.57 There was four hours of packed 3ABN material, 00:37:20.60\00:37:23.41 so he would just record at home on his DVR, 3ABN. 00:37:23.44\00:37:26.94 And then he would bring it in and he'd leave us the DVD. 00:37:26.98\00:37:29.41 So we could go to the chapel and just watch it there. 00:37:29.44\00:37:31.85 So I'd watch four hours 3ABN about every two weeks. 00:37:31.88\00:37:35.78 And that's, that's all I knew about 3ABN. 00:37:35.82\00:37:37.65 And I said this, since the day I said, 00:37:37.69\00:37:39.15 "We've got to get 3ABN into prisons. 00:37:39.19\00:37:41.99 We got to do it." 00:37:42.02\00:37:43.36 Well, we know that there's 3ABN, 00:37:43.39\00:37:45.29 God is opening so many doors for 3ABN in prisons 00:37:45.33\00:37:48.33 and we want to just say hello to all 00:37:48.36\00:37:51.37 of our brothers and sisters who are behind bars. 00:37:51.40\00:37:54.47 And we do have many brothers and sisters behind bars, 00:37:54.50\00:37:57.31 but glory to God. 00:37:57.34\00:37:58.97 But I think every prison in United States, 00:37:59.01\00:38:01.48 around the world even should have 3ABN. 00:38:01.51\00:38:03.85 And I don't know, if there's ways we can do that 00:38:03.88\00:38:06.21 but definitely has more support. 00:38:06.25\00:38:07.58 The Lord is really opening a lot of doors 00:38:07.62\00:38:09.58 and Brian Hamilton. 00:38:09.62\00:38:10.95 I'll have to introduce you afterwards. 00:38:10.99\00:38:13.05 He is the director of finance here, 00:38:13.09\00:38:15.26 but he is also our CFO. 00:38:15.29\00:38:17.96 He has, God has put it on his heart 00:38:17.99\00:38:21.03 to become very actively involved 00:38:21.06\00:38:23.10 in prison ministries, 00:38:23.13\00:38:24.47 so 3ABN has a prison ministry now. 00:38:24.50\00:38:26.87 And then we have two ladies upstairs 00:38:26.90\00:38:28.84 who answer all these prisoners 00:38:28.87\00:38:30.71 and send them Bibles and things. 00:38:30.74\00:38:32.11 It's a beautiful thing. 00:38:32.14\00:38:33.64 But now, we only have about ten minutes left, 00:38:33.68\00:38:35.58 so what I'd like to do is 00:38:35.61\00:38:38.05 you spent 14 of those 20 years in prison. 00:38:38.08\00:38:44.09 And God got you released six years early. 00:38:44.12\00:38:47.69 Tell me how he took you 00:38:47.72\00:38:50.06 from prison to being a Bible worker? 00:38:50.09\00:38:52.89 Well, who wants to hire somebody fresh out of prison? 00:38:52.93\00:38:57.13 So I was 29, getting out of prison, 00:38:57.17\00:39:00.07 I never had a driver's license, I never had a job, 00:39:00.10\00:39:02.60 I have no education. 00:39:02.64\00:39:04.11 What a culture shock. 00:39:04.14\00:39:05.74 Well, it wasn't so bad, I prepared myself 00:39:05.77\00:39:07.48 where I did all, I researched and studied 00:39:07.51\00:39:09.48 and did everything I could staying up-to-date 00:39:09.51\00:39:11.61 to be prepared as best I could. 00:39:11.65\00:39:13.45 But that didn't change the hearts 00:39:13.48\00:39:15.05 of those I was applying for job. 00:39:15.08\00:39:16.42 So 40 job applications, 00:39:16.45\00:39:17.79 nobody wanted to hire me, Shelley. 00:39:17.82\00:39:19.79 I mean who would. I have a violent crime history. 00:39:19.82\00:39:22.79 No work history, 00:39:22.82\00:39:24.16 no really education to speak of, 00:39:24.19\00:39:25.83 I got my GED while I was locked up, 00:39:25.86\00:39:27.20 and took some college classes. 00:39:27.23\00:39:28.86 But I-- 00:39:28.90\00:39:30.23 just there was nothing attractive about me. 00:39:30.27\00:39:33.34 I learned computer science when I was locked up in prison. 00:39:33.37\00:39:36.67 Praise God for many opportunities I was given, 00:39:36.71\00:39:38.74 but I just, nobody want to hire me. 00:39:38.77\00:39:40.44 So without a job, I just went to the church and volunteered, 00:39:40.48\00:39:44.41 we went door to door knocking and giving, 00:39:44.45\00:39:46.78 doing surveys and trying to give Bible studies. 00:39:46.82\00:39:48.88 And eventually the same pastor, who I was going 00:39:50.05\00:39:51.82 with door to door said, "You know, what? 00:39:51.85\00:39:53.32 I've been talking with my church's, 00:39:53.36\00:39:54.69 we're really interested in a Bible worker. 00:39:54.72\00:39:56.06 Would you be willing?" 00:39:56.09\00:39:57.43 This is the first job offer I've had. 00:39:57.46\00:40:00.23 He said, we've got a place in the church basement, 00:40:00.26\00:40:01.90 it's not finished but we will work on it 00:40:01.93\00:40:03.80 and it's not we can't pay you much 00:40:03.83\00:40:05.33 but we'll give you something. 00:40:05.37\00:40:06.70 And I said, "Well, praise God, let's do it. 00:40:06.74\00:40:09.84 Be a Bible worker, so what's that all about. 00:40:09.87\00:40:12.04 So I had to learn what it meant to be a Bible worker. 00:40:12.07\00:40:14.21 But listen, I have seen so many souls come into church 00:40:14.24\00:40:17.85 through the work we did, going door to door. 00:40:17.88\00:40:21.98 and doing Bible studies in people's homes 00:40:22.02\00:40:24.42 It's been incredible. Amen. 00:40:24.45\00:40:26.65 Now you, obviously, we announced that you are the, 00:40:26.69\00:40:31.63 an associate speaker and evangelist 00:40:31.66\00:40:34.20 for Amazing Facts. 00:40:34.23\00:40:36.16 What I want to understand is your conversion-- 00:40:36.20\00:40:41.37 Well, if we have a moment, 00:40:41.40\00:40:42.74 we'll go back to that a little bit more but. 00:40:42.77\00:40:45.17 When you came out, you're Bible worker. 00:40:45.21\00:40:46.78 Did you write this book before Amazing Facts 00:40:46.81\00:40:51.08 or after Amazing Facts? 00:40:51.11\00:40:52.45 I wrote a little pamphlet of just the conversion story 00:40:52.48\00:40:55.45 and the grace the God has given me in my life. 00:40:55.48\00:40:57.92 And I sent it to a friend. 00:40:57.95\00:40:59.79 He took the liberty of sending that 00:40:59.82\00:41:01.16 to Remnant Publications. 00:41:01.19\00:41:02.52 And it sat on a desk at Remnant Publications 00:41:02.56\00:41:05.36 for several years. 00:41:05.39\00:41:07.26 And after I was released, I get a phone call one day 00:41:07.30\00:41:10.97 and says, "Hey, we just we just read this thing 00:41:11.00\00:41:13.47 and there's a little big story behind this. 00:41:13.50\00:41:16.10 But we want to publish your book. 00:41:16.14\00:41:17.67 And you have to finish." 00:41:17.71\00:41:19.04 So I spent another year as a Bible worker at that time, 00:41:19.07\00:41:20.68 I spent another year writing the book 00:41:20.71\00:41:22.48 and the book actually came out the same time 00:41:22.51\00:41:25.11 that I went to AFCO and trained with Amazing Facts. 00:41:25.15\00:41:28.58 And, and so I was actually picked up at the same time 00:41:28.62\00:41:31.92 to do full time of public evangelism, 00:41:31.95\00:41:34.69 while I was out there. 00:41:34.72\00:41:36.06 So listen, the miracles don't stop 00:41:36.09\00:41:38.89 and the book is packed with them all the way through 00:41:38.93\00:41:41.03 and how God protect me, not one fight 00:41:41.06\00:41:43.83 during my entire time incarcerated. 00:41:43.87\00:41:45.20 That is amazing. God's promises are powerful. 00:41:45.23\00:41:49.70 But anyway, the God, even when I was a Bible worker 00:41:49.74\00:41:53.81 preaching evangelistic series during that time 00:41:53.84\00:41:55.51 gave me some experience. 00:41:55.54\00:41:57.05 And, and ever since we've been doing full time evangelism 00:41:57.08\00:42:00.25 all across this country around. 00:42:00.28\00:42:01.78 I've been in Thailand and in fact, 00:42:01.82\00:42:05.49 we, we just baptized a lot of people in Taiwan 00:42:05.52\00:42:07.62 this last December. 00:42:07.66\00:42:08.99 And we had in Nepal a year before that. 00:42:09.02\00:42:13.16 We did some work there and did prophecy seminars 00:42:13.19\00:42:16.36 in Thailand or Nepal. 00:42:16.40\00:42:17.80 So it's been an adventure where God has sent me 00:42:17.83\00:42:21.24 and we just keep working for Him wherever He sends us. 00:42:21.27\00:42:23.41 Okay. 00:42:23.44\00:42:24.77 So the book is called, 00:42:24.81\00:42:26.14 "The Least of the Least: From Crime to Christ." 00:42:26.17\00:42:31.55 And you can get this book at Remnant. 00:42:31.58\00:42:34.78 Yeah. 00:42:34.82\00:42:36.15 And that would be what remnantpublications.com 00:42:36.18\00:42:39.99 or is it also available on your website? 00:42:40.02\00:42:42.89 If you go to my website, endtimehope.org. 00:42:42.92\00:42:45.76 And End-Time Hope Ministries is our, 00:42:45.79\00:42:48.16 the name of our prophecy seminars, 00:42:48.20\00:42:49.63 the name of our ministry 00:42:49.66\00:42:51.00 where we also help send these books into prisons. 00:42:51.03\00:42:53.70 But if you go to End-Time Hope Ministries. 00:42:53.74\00:42:55.84 Excuse me, endtimehope.org, 00:42:55.87\00:42:58.04 you can find ways of also getting the book there. 00:42:58.07\00:43:00.51 And there's also e -book version as well. 00:43:00.54\00:43:02.61 Wonderful. 00:43:02.64\00:43:03.98 And tell us a little bit about your time at AFCO. 00:43:04.01\00:43:10.49 And how God, I mean, 00:43:10.52\00:43:11.85 there's a lot of people who go to AFCO, 00:43:11.89\00:43:13.42 I've taught out there myself. 00:43:13.46\00:43:15.39 And you see that there's a lot of people come through. 00:43:15.42\00:43:18.23 There's very few people that are selected 00:43:18.26\00:43:21.76 to be the speakers 00:43:21.80\00:43:25.83 and evangelists representative of AFCO. 00:43:25.87\00:43:29.87 So tell us a little bit how God arranged that? 00:43:29.90\00:43:33.94 Well, I'm not sure all the behind the scenes. 00:43:33.98\00:43:36.34 God, I think He's been working on this for a long time. 00:43:36.38\00:43:38.61 No doubt. 00:43:38.65\00:43:39.98 Even in meeting my wife, 00:43:40.02\00:43:41.35 and everything just worked out so perfectly. 00:43:41.38\00:43:44.09 But, you know, the fact that they don't choose 00:43:44.12\00:43:46.39 a lot of people to be evangelists 00:43:46.42\00:43:47.82 or full time Bible workers, it doesn't mean 00:43:47.86\00:43:49.19 that there's not quality there, because these students 00:43:49.22\00:43:51.19 that come through AFCO are the cream of the crop. 00:43:51.23\00:43:53.60 They're definitely solid 00:43:53.63\00:43:55.53 and but there's just only so many, 00:43:55.56\00:43:58.20 I guess positions available. 00:43:58.23\00:43:59.93 And so, how the Lord worked it out that it was me, 00:43:59.97\00:44:02.44 I mean when we went, 00:44:02.47\00:44:04.54 I thought I was getting some more training to go out 00:44:04.57\00:44:06.37 and be to continue doing the Bible work 00:44:06.41\00:44:08.38 somewhere else and. 00:44:08.41\00:44:10.25 But the Lord had other plans. 00:44:10.28\00:44:11.61 We weren't there long before the offer was given, 00:44:11.65\00:44:13.15 and so I spent most of my time at AFCO 00:44:13.18\00:44:15.78 knowing what our future was going to be 00:44:15.82\00:44:18.62 and so studying extra hard with that in mind. 00:44:18.65\00:44:22.62 And I can tell you, looking back 00:44:22.66\00:44:24.13 that this isn't been nothing but divine. 00:44:24.16\00:44:27.06 God has been in this from the beginning 00:44:27.10\00:44:29.60 and it's been more miracle stories. 00:44:29.63\00:44:32.17 Now, when you were there, you were already married, 00:44:32.20\00:44:34.50 is that correct? 00:44:34.54\00:44:35.87 We went there, in fact, 00:44:35.90\00:44:37.24 we'd already had a baby at that time. 00:44:37.27\00:44:38.61 All right. 00:44:38.64\00:44:39.97 So let's, let's back up just a little bit then. 00:44:40.01\00:44:41.34 You're out of prison, you're Bible worker. 00:44:41.38\00:44:44.15 How long were you out of prison 00:44:44.18\00:44:45.51 before you met your wife? 00:44:45.55\00:44:47.15 I'll tell you what. 00:44:47.18\00:44:48.52 My wife would be on a little bit, you ask her that question. 00:44:48.55\00:44:50.69 And she's-- 00:44:50.72\00:44:52.35 But we, I wasn't out too long, because I wasn't-- 00:44:52.39\00:44:55.59 I was, I had a two year plan. 00:44:55.62\00:44:56.96 Okay. 00:44:56.99\00:44:58.33 I wasn't going to get involved in relationship for two years. 00:44:58.36\00:45:00.10 I realized getting out of prison 00:45:00.13\00:45:01.46 was a lot of adjustment to take. 00:45:01.50\00:45:03.50 But I had a two year plan, 00:45:03.53\00:45:05.27 but the Lord had different plans. 00:45:05.30\00:45:06.87 And again, looking back I can see 00:45:06.90\00:45:08.67 that God had a rush order on this thing 00:45:08.70\00:45:13.61 to get us where we are at today 00:45:13.64\00:45:14.98 where we can do as much good as we can. 00:45:15.01\00:45:17.18 But God sent her in my life pretty early. 00:45:17.21\00:45:21.22 And we began to court and I met her, 00:45:21.25\00:45:24.35 this is actually a picture we took at a camp meeting. 00:45:24.39\00:45:26.25 This is the beautiful Jenni. 00:45:26.29\00:45:27.82 That's my wife Jenni. 00:45:27.86\00:45:29.96 She is-- 00:45:29.99\00:45:31.69 You know, and from the beginning 00:45:31.73\00:45:33.06 we both knew even though it took us a long time 00:45:33.09\00:45:34.66 to admit to each other that we were meant-- 00:45:34.70\00:45:37.63 When I first met her, I knew she was the one, 00:45:37.67\00:45:40.67 and she said the same about me. 00:45:40.70\00:45:42.04 And I tell you, we didn't tell each other this for long time. 00:45:42.07\00:45:44.97 But it was, it was definitely providence 00:45:45.01\00:45:48.91 that brought us together. 00:45:48.94\00:45:50.58 And so, we got married in June of 2013. 00:45:50.61\00:45:54.15 And about ten months later, we had our beautiful daughter 00:45:54.18\00:45:59.09 Purity, Purity Allen. 00:45:59.12\00:46:00.76 And she is a beauty.
