how do we impact these youths?

but they were mostly
from non-Adventist backgrounds

from the local high schools.

heard about our group

Chile a couple times

to get involved in foreign work

opened up the door in Chile

their testimony of that project

in the audience that day.

And she came up with
tears afterwards and said,

same youth to my country?

My parents built a
church before the revolution

and the roof is being held
up by a rope to a mango tree.

down and do evangelism

and rebuild that church?"

We said, "What's your
country?" And she said, "Cuba."

How do you go to Cuba?

Which was a communist,
is a communist country.

in the 1990s. Yes.

And we prayed about it

So when you first went to Cuba,
did you receive any resistance?

We went down at first alone

and we went to the
town, we saw the church.

It takes years to
get a permit to rebuild

an existing church in Cuba

and she had been
working on that process.

But we met the chief communist
party officer in the town.

We told him, I'm
director of nursing as well

in a hospital in South Carolina.

And we told him that we
would like to be some blessing

to the town.

We were coming down
with some young people

what could we do?

He toured us in the hospital.

They didn't have that
time sheets on the beds

and they didn't
have EKG machines

and even blood sugar machines.

And this is in the '90s.

And we brought all
of those things down.

The women in our church
made sheets for the beds

and we delivered
all those things.

And so it was
quite an experience.

read the Bible alone

things that we do, Shelley,

a tremendous growth.

For 12 years we just
took our Sabbath school class

did one new church plant

in an un-entered
area and un-reached area.

What I mean by that

is no Seventh-day
Adventist presence,

often very little
Christianity at all

particularly,
Protestant Christianity.

And so we would go to
a mountain town, village,

a city somewhere
and start a new work.

work in a communist country

That's a very
important question.

How do you do it?

Many methods have been tried

but what we learned
through trial and error

learned is you must go out

willing to move to that town.

And so we would talk
to the churches around

and find a young

and send them to this town

and find a place for
them to live for or a stay

for a few months.

And then we would
bring our youth group down,

class and do evangelism there.

But we noticed,

even though there
was a precious result

and the Lord blessed

decisions for Jesus.

But we would notice that

and that was a big challenge.

So the Lord led
us to the next step

The way to go into a town
and make a real difference

and we began a school in Cuba.

So we started a school in

and do evangelism.

We build a church in that town

Well, on the 25th of May

magnitude earthquake.

The epicenter was

away from Katmandu

and it caused a
massive destruction

and loss of life.

And then three weeks
later, on the 12th of May

we had another major earthquake.

This one was a little
closer to Mount Everest

and again, caused
the lot of destruction.

for Tanzania is concerned,

on one side we had to
look at the political aspect,

it's important
to live in a country

which is fairly safe
within the third world.

On the other side, of course,

we looked also on the
needs of that specific country

and Tanzania has in average

lot of AIDS orphans.
