Yes. 00:04:20.79\00:04:23.36 I was working away at my office 00:04:23.39\00:04:25.79 in the Mid-America Union one day 00:04:25.83\00:04:27.30 when a email dropped in from Logos 00:04:27.33\00:04:30.40 saying that someone at the General Conference 00:04:30.43\00:04:32.23 had recommended me to have the opportunity 00:04:32.27\00:04:36.74 to be the Seventh-day Adventist product manager 00:04:36.77\00:04:39.91 to bring a whole line of Adventist products into Logos. 00:04:39.94\00:04:44.38 So I quickly retired and here I am. 00:04:44.41\00:04:46.82 And I am glad that you are here today with us. 00:04:46.85\00:04:48.88 Now, Nate, give us, for those who are look, 00:04:48.92\00:04:51.12 listening to this interview, 00:04:51.15\00:04:52.49 somebody may not even know 00:04:52.52\00:04:53.86 what Logos is outside of the fact 00:04:53.89\00:04:55.22 that it does associate with, 00:04:55.26\00:04:56.89 "in the beginning was the word." 00:04:56.93\00:04:59.29 For those who are novices to software at all 00:04:59.33\00:05:02.70 or maybe those who are professionals, 00:05:02.73\00:05:04.10 kind of give us an overview what Logos is. 00:05:04.13\00:05:06.37 Absolutely. 00:05:06.40\00:05:07.74 So let me, let me paint this picture for you. 00:05:07.77\00:05:09.44 Logos Bible Software 00:05:09.47\00:05:10.81 is a digital theological research library. 00:05:10.84\00:05:13.64 So that means we're going to take 00:05:13.68\00:05:15.18 all your biblical resources, so your Bible translations, 00:05:15.21\00:05:18.18 commentaries, dictionaries, encyclopedias, lexicons, 00:05:18.21\00:05:21.82 preaching and teaching resources, 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.18 maps, photos, medias, journals, sermons, 00:05:23.22\00:05:26.59 just everything, combined with our tools. 00:05:26.62\00:05:28.96 We have tools to help with passage study, 00:05:28.99\00:05:30.76 exegetical study, words studies in the original language, 00:05:30.79\00:05:33.56 topical studies, we have tools 00:05:33.60\00:05:35.36 to help you build lesson plans and sermon outlines, 00:05:35.40\00:05:37.57 we have all the biographical data 00:05:37.60\00:05:39.33 for every single person, place, thing 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.47 and the event in scripture. 00:05:41.50\00:05:42.84 That's all 3,600 names, every single place. 00:05:42.87\00:05:45.74 A timeline that covers the expanse of history 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.94 from creation to present day 00:05:47.98\00:05:49.64 with biblical history, church history, 00:05:49.68\00:05:51.11 and world history, 00:05:51.15\00:05:52.48 not to mention a plethora of other tools 00:05:52.51\00:05:54.02 provided to interact with those resources. 00:05:54.05\00:05:56.65 But the key of Logos Bible Software 00:05:56.69\00:05:58.75 is our books. 00:05:58.79\00:06:00.12 You're not just getting a digital copy, 00:06:00.16\00:06:01.96 you're getting what we call Smart Books. 00:06:01.99\00:06:04.09 So when you touch a word, you're going to get the Greek, 00:06:04.13\00:06:06.29 the Hebrew, Parsing and concordance, lexicon, 00:06:06.33\00:06:09.16 definition, transliteration, 00:06:09.20\00:06:11.27 we'll even pronounce the word for you 00:06:11.30\00:06:12.63 in the original language. 00:06:12.67\00:06:14.00 And that's just touching the word. 00:06:14.04\00:06:15.37 Click on the word, 00:06:15.40\00:06:16.74 we're just going to open, wide open for you. 00:06:16.77\00:06:18.81 Wow, wow, wow, 00:06:18.84\00:06:20.18 that's a whole lot you said there. 00:06:20.21\00:06:21.81 Breaking that down into components 00:06:21.84\00:06:23.31 because I had a chance to work with Logos 6, 00:06:23.35\00:06:26.25 and that's the most recent version 00:06:26.28\00:06:28.08 of the Logos software. 00:06:28.12\00:06:30.09 But it also comes, 00:06:30.12\00:06:31.45 before I get into some of the specifics, 00:06:31.49\00:06:33.02 a Logos comes in various packages 00:06:33.05\00:06:36.12 from the beginning to the top, 00:06:36.16\00:06:38.19 kind of give us an idea of what they range. 00:06:38.23\00:06:40.30 We have libraries to meet every single need. 00:06:40.33\00:06:42.56 So whether you are just a novice 00:06:42.60\00:06:44.17 and want to dig into God's word, 00:06:44.20\00:06:45.73 you're not really sure where to start 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.24 or you're a lay leader, 00:06:47.27\00:06:48.60 and maybe you're a regular personal study, 00:06:48.64\00:06:50.77 but maybe you lead a small group 00:06:50.81\00:06:52.14 or a Sunday school class or some women's or men's group. 00:06:52.17\00:06:56.54 And then even beyond, if you're a full time ministry, 00:06:56.58\00:06:58.88 you're a senior pastor, a scholar, a theologian, 00:06:58.91\00:07:02.42 we have libraries built for all those needs. 00:07:02.45\00:07:04.55 And of course, you can always build your library 00:07:04.59\00:07:06.92 as time goes on, meeting your personal needs. 00:07:06.96\00:07:09.22 So anywhere from the layman, 00:07:09.26\00:07:10.69 for the person that just wants to dabble 00:07:10.73\00:07:12.23 in understanding the Bible, 00:07:12.26\00:07:13.60 all the way to the professor level. 00:07:13.63\00:07:15.30 And as you mentioned, 00:07:15.33\00:07:16.67 you travel and give seminars 00:07:16.70\00:07:18.03 and workshops to help individuals understand 00:07:18.07\00:07:20.70 more so at the academic level also, understanding. 00:07:20.74\00:07:24.11 There's also another aspect 00:07:24.14\00:07:25.57 and I want to have Martin Chime in on this 00:07:25.61\00:07:27.54 because I noticed as the software was talked about 00:07:27.58\00:07:30.78 and both of you could comment on this, 00:07:30.81\00:07:32.65 that it creates a continual community. 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.88 For example, if I'm able to comment 00:07:35.92\00:07:38.49 on a particular part of the Bible, 00:07:38.52\00:07:40.62 does that become a part of the Logos community? 00:07:40.66\00:07:43.96 Help me understand that. 00:07:43.99\00:07:45.33 Yes, it does. 00:07:45.36\00:07:46.70 Part of our software allows you to interact 00:07:46.73\00:07:48.96 with different communities that you can create. 00:07:49.00\00:07:51.37 We do that through our faith life groups, 00:07:51.40\00:07:53.23 so you can make notes 00:07:53.27\00:07:54.60 on your Bible or any other text, 00:07:54.64\00:07:56.04 we'll be able to share that with your groups. 00:07:56.07\00:07:57.94 So you can have essentially, 00:07:57.97\00:07:59.77 an online small group or online Bible study, 00:07:59.81\00:08:02.98 reading scripture together, 00:08:03.01\00:08:04.81 be able to make comments together 00:08:04.85\00:08:06.51 and work through that as a group 00:08:06.55\00:08:08.28 and not actually have to be in the same room. 00:08:08.32\00:08:09.85 Okay. 00:08:09.88\00:08:11.22 Now, Martin, something you talked about a while ago 00:08:11.25\00:08:13.49 when we had a chance to look at the Logos software 00:08:13.52\00:08:15.59 at the NAD meetings. 00:08:15.62\00:08:17.59 You mentioned how much time it saves in study, 00:08:17.63\00:08:20.60 because as pastors and those who present sermons 00:08:20.63\00:08:23.00 and those who teach, one of the deficits is time. 00:08:23.03\00:08:28.97 How does Logos make the best use of our time? 00:08:29.00\00:08:32.91 If there's a funeral, if there's a vacation 00:08:32.94\00:08:36.71 or just some emergency, your time is really crunched. 00:08:36.75\00:08:41.98 And with Logos you can type in a scripture or a topic 00:08:42.02\00:08:46.22 with one click to actually 40 hours of research 00:08:46.25\00:08:49.96 just unfolds with one click. 00:08:49.99\00:08:53.53 And the SDA Bible commentary is now in Logos gold version. 00:08:53.56\00:08:59.30 Can I tell a little quick story about how we got the rights. 00:08:59.33\00:09:01.70 Sure. Okay. 00:09:01.74\00:09:03.07 So we're getting Logos 6 together 00:09:03.10\00:09:08.14 and I wanted so much to get the life works 00:09:08.18\00:09:10.41 of Ellen White, 402 volumes in there. 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.55 And so finally got the green light 00:09:13.58\00:09:17.69 from the White Estate 00:09:17.72\00:09:19.05 to include it in base packages on the last day 00:09:19.09\00:09:22.66 that I could squeeze something into Logos 6. 00:09:22.69\00:09:26.03 So the reformed product manager 00:09:26.06\00:09:29.96 and the orthodox product manager 00:09:30.00\00:09:32.30 worked into the night with me 00:09:32.33\00:09:34.24 to figure out a way to take this or that, 00:09:34.27\00:09:36.64 that Adventist might not be quite as interested in 00:09:36.67\00:09:39.97 to get the full life works of Ellen White. 00:09:40.01\00:09:42.14 And that touches me deeply, 00:09:42.18\00:09:43.68 and we didn't have to raise the prices one bit 00:09:43.71\00:09:46.35 to get that done. 00:09:46.38\00:09:47.92 Wow, and something else as a liaison to Logos, 00:09:47.95\00:09:51.49 also, I understand that some of the resources 00:09:51.52\00:09:53.96 from Andrews University is included 00:09:53.99\00:09:56.89 in the Logos Software, talk about that. 00:09:56.93\00:09:58.49 Oh, yes, they have opened the door wide 00:09:58.53\00:10:00.80 to some of the really prime resources 00:10:00.83\00:10:04.33 from Andrews including right now 00:10:04.37\00:10:06.97 the book on homosexuality is of course, 00:10:07.00\00:10:10.47 an important topic in these discussion. 00:10:10.51\00:10:13.74 And so we have that. 00:10:13.78\00:10:16.71 Biblical research institute, 00:10:16.75\00:10:18.78 in fact, almost a little miracle, I would say. 00:10:18.81\00:10:22.12 We wanted DARCOM, 00:10:22.15\00:10:23.49 the Daniel and Revelation seven volume series, 00:10:23.52\00:10:27.06 and it had gone out of print. 00:10:27.09\00:10:29.26 So many pastors wanted it. 00:10:29.29\00:10:31.19 So I called the General Conference 00:10:31.23\00:10:33.33 that was put through the biblical research 00:10:33.36\00:10:36.36 to ask for DARCOM. 00:10:36.40\00:10:39.67 And first, he said, I have a question for you, 00:10:39.70\00:10:42.34 I have just mailed DARCOM off to you, 00:10:42.37\00:10:45.37 would you publish it? 00:10:45.41\00:10:46.74 So can you imagine? So, yes. 00:10:46.78\00:10:49.28 So we have it. 00:10:49.31\00:10:50.65 And also some of those who are followers, 00:10:50.68\00:10:53.65 maybe of Pastor Doug Batchelor 00:10:53.68\00:10:55.48 or there are those scholars or teachers 00:10:55.52\00:10:57.85 that read Dr Jon Paulien's writing, 00:10:57.89\00:11:01.69 those are also available, am I correct? 00:11:01.72\00:11:03.06 Yes, we have five of Pastor Doug's books. 00:11:03.09\00:11:06.63 Jonathan Paulien came up 00:11:06.66\00:11:08.60 and actually recorded a Mobile Ed course. 00:11:08.63\00:11:12.30 We have his wife works as well. 00:11:12.33\00:11:14.80 And he actually came back a second week, 00:11:14.84\00:11:18.11 spent two full weeks with us 00:11:18.14\00:11:20.08 and said that working with us might be his legacy. 00:11:20.11\00:11:23.08 He was deeply impressed by what he found there. 00:11:23.11\00:11:26.92 Now, Nate, giving a broader view 00:11:26.95\00:11:28.92 of the benefits of Logos, is it designed in such a way 00:11:28.95\00:11:32.39 that pastors can get continuing education credit 00:11:32.42\00:11:35.29 by using your software? 00:11:35.32\00:11:36.73 Do you know about that? 00:11:36.76\00:11:38.29 As of right now there is no credit that will be given. 00:11:38.33\00:11:41.50 But the beauty of our software connected with the resources 00:11:41.53\00:11:44.93 that are trusted and known and desired, 00:11:44.97\00:11:47.84 along with our Mobile Ed education 00:11:47.87\00:11:49.30 like we had Dr. Paulien do, 00:11:49.34\00:11:51.14 you can do that continuing education 00:11:51.17\00:11:52.74 no matter where you are. 00:11:52.77\00:11:54.11 So whether you did a degree 00:11:54.14\00:11:55.71 in just pastoral ministry or particular area, 00:11:55.74\00:11:57.98 you can get that continuing ed 00:11:58.01\00:11:59.38 such in counseling or a particular field of study 00:11:59.41\00:12:03.02 without having the cost of going back to school. 00:12:03.05\00:12:04.95 Okay. 00:12:04.99\00:12:06.32 Now some people may not always 00:12:06.35\00:12:07.69 want to carry around their laptop, 00:12:07.72\00:12:09.06 talk about the mobility of Logos. 00:12:09.09\00:12:11.49 How accessible it is, 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.16 because we have various devices nowadays, 00:12:13.19\00:12:15.00 you know, we have the iPad, the Kindle, the tablet, 00:12:15.03\00:12:20.70 talk about the mobility of Logos. 00:12:20.74\00:12:22.54 Absolutely. 00:12:22.57\00:12:23.91 That's the beauty of our software, 00:12:23.94\00:12:25.27 not only do we function on both laptop and desktop, 00:12:25.31\00:12:28.14 Mac and PC, but all your mobile devices. 00:12:28.18\00:12:30.71 So whether you're an Android user, an OS user, 00:12:30.75\00:12:33.31 Kindle Fire, Nook HD, 00:12:33.35\00:12:34.78 and you're going to be able to have access 00:12:34.82\00:12:36.15 to your entire library with you on the go. 00:12:36.18\00:12:37.95 Okay. 00:12:37.99\00:12:39.32 Which means, and both of you could chime in on this, 00:12:39.35\00:12:41.92 say, if I have, if I'm doing research 00:12:41.96\00:12:44.59 but I don't want to carry my laptop today, 00:12:44.63\00:12:46.23 I could carry my iPad, 00:12:46.26\00:12:48.00 and because I am making my own personal notes, 00:12:48.03\00:12:50.37 does it interconnect? 00:12:50.40\00:12:51.83 Absolutely, it does. 00:12:51.87\00:12:53.20 It's going to connect and sync with your other devices 00:12:53.23\00:12:55.74 so that the notes and research you're doing on that tablet 00:12:55.77\00:12:59.57 would then sync over to your desktop, your laptop 00:12:59.61\00:13:01.68 and if you open it up, 00:13:01.71\00:13:03.04 and you can continue on once you open it. 00:13:03.08\00:13:05.11 Okay, now for those who may say, wow, 00:13:05.15\00:13:07.25 you know, there is a whole lot 00:13:07.28\00:13:08.62 they talk about all these resources 00:13:08.65\00:13:10.39 and sometimes I may feel overwhelmed, 00:13:10.42\00:13:14.16 does Logos offer training to use the software? 00:13:14.19\00:13:18.03 Absolutely, we do offer training, 00:13:18.06\00:13:19.63 because that's important to us. 00:13:19.66\00:13:21.00 We want to make sure 00:13:21.03\00:13:22.36 that not only are you investing in a great theological library, 00:13:22.40\00:13:24.93 but you'll be able to use it right away. 00:13:24.97\00:13:27.07 So first, we are very user friendly off the bat. 00:13:27.10\00:13:29.97 So once you jump in, it's going to be easy to navigate. 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.64 And we offer many different places for training. 00:13:32.67\00:13:34.71 Even right within our software, in your library, 00:13:34.74\00:13:37.11 we offer 26 to 28 videos 00:13:37.15\00:13:39.48 to teach you how to walk through all of the tools. 00:13:39.51\00:13:41.68 We have a great YouTube channel that can subscribe to, 00:13:41.72\00:13:43.99 that we almost daily upload 00:13:44.02\00:13:45.55 with tutorials and walkthroughs. 00:13:45.59\00:13:47.19 As well as our website provides great free training. 00:13:47.22\00:13:49.12 You know it's good 00:13:49.16\00:13:50.49 because there's a large YouTube community. 00:13:50.53\00:13:52.43 Somebody once mentioned that on a daily basis, 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.83 500 years worth of videos are viewed on YouTube, 00:13:54.86\00:13:59.00 so, but there are beneficial sites 00:13:59.03\00:14:02.14 to the use of Logos software. 00:14:02.17\00:14:04.37 I went there myself and looked at 00:14:04.41\00:14:05.74 some of the webinars that Logos does, 00:14:05.77\00:14:08.14 and I download some of those to my laptop. 00:14:08.18\00:14:10.18 Now, Martin, what I want to also talk about 00:14:10.21\00:14:12.95 is now as a pastor, 00:14:12.98\00:14:16.08 how can our clergy enhance their day to day, 00:14:16.12\00:14:21.86 or their weekly sermon preparation 00:14:21.89\00:14:23.73 with the use of Logos? 00:14:23.76\00:14:25.09 Sure. 00:14:25.13\00:14:26.73 Logos just walks with them every step of the way, 00:14:26.76\00:14:30.77 it's like having a paid research assistant 00:14:30.80\00:14:33.77 in every phase of the sermon preparation. 00:14:33.80\00:14:36.97 They can actually create different layout pages 00:14:37.01\00:14:39.91 for every phase of a sermon preparation. 00:14:39.94\00:14:43.95 And it just is a fabulous tool to have, 00:14:43.98\00:14:46.98 not only Adventist works but works that Adventists trust, 00:14:47.02\00:14:51.55 recommended by the seminary. 00:14:51.59\00:14:53.32 For example, we just, when Dr. Hans LaRondelle 00:14:53.36\00:14:57.89 the beloved professor from Andrews, 00:14:57.93\00:14:59.49 when he passed away he left behind two laptops 00:14:59.53\00:15:02.93 with a million words of information 00:15:02.96\00:15:05.47 and Logos licensed those. 00:15:05.50\00:15:09.47 And so we have them, 00:15:09.50\00:15:10.84 just vintage, wonderful resources. 00:15:10.87\00:15:13.68 In fact, this has never happened 00:15:13.71\00:15:16.78 in the history of the Adventist church 00:15:16.81\00:15:19.15 where a non-Adventist publisher has just thrown open the door 00:15:19.18\00:15:23.12 for whatever we want so the biblical research, 00:15:23.15\00:15:27.09 Andrews University Press, the seminary, 00:15:27.12\00:15:30.43 our publishing houses, 3ABN or any of your authors, 00:15:30.46\00:15:35.36 we could get them in Logos SDA and just go out there. 00:15:35.40\00:15:40.54 So it connects the entire community together? 00:15:40.57\00:15:42.80 Yes. 00:15:42.84\00:15:44.17 Now, another question, for the Bible student, 00:15:44.21\00:15:49.14 if a person wants to do a word study, 00:15:49.18\00:15:52.48 tell us about the power of Logos 00:15:52.51\00:15:53.92 when it comes to that. 00:15:53.95\00:15:55.28 Absolutely. 00:15:55.32\00:15:56.65 As simple as just touching the word 00:15:56.69\00:15:58.02 and immediately getting the Greek and Hebrew. 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.52 Of course, your concordance and lexicons and definitions. 00:15:59.55\00:16:02.76 But our Bible Word study tool is so powerful 00:16:02.79\00:16:05.09 and visual as well. 00:16:05.13\00:16:06.63 Opening up that term 00:16:06.66\00:16:08.00 showing you all of your lexicon definitions, 00:16:08.03\00:16:09.90 translation wheel, the root definition, 00:16:09.93\00:16:12.23 all the places it's translated in the English text. 00:16:12.27\00:16:14.90 And simply clicking on that wheel, 00:16:14.94\00:16:16.44 let's you see all the places in the Scripture where it's found, 00:16:16.47\00:16:19.77 but beyond that all your roots, grammatical relationships, 00:16:19.81\00:16:22.81 semantic rules, example uses, 00:16:22.84\00:16:25.85 prepositional diagramming, textual searches, 00:16:25.88\00:16:28.42 just immediately accessible in a moment. 00:16:28.45\00:16:30.52 So you can really understand 00:16:30.55\00:16:32.12 how that word is used in its context 00:16:32.15\00:16:34.16 and apply that to our daily lives. 00:16:34.19\00:16:36.46 One of the other features I heard about 00:16:36.49\00:16:37.83 that's really a tremendous benefit, 00:16:37.86\00:16:39.43 I mean, as a graphic designer 00:16:39.46\00:16:40.83 is that Logos also offers an online connectivity 00:16:40.86\00:16:45.37 for people that want to use slides. 00:16:45.40\00:16:47.20 Talk about that, 00:16:47.24\00:16:48.57 the presentation aspect of Logos. 00:16:48.60\00:16:49.94 Absolutely. 00:16:49.97\00:16:51.31 So not just helping you with your theological research, 00:16:51.34\00:16:52.67 but with your presentation. 00:16:52.71\00:16:54.04 So we have thousands of images loaded into your library 00:16:54.08\00:16:56.98 that you have access to, you have our visual copy tool. 00:16:57.01\00:16:59.51 It will let you create 00:16:59.55\00:17:00.88 customize artwork with scripture 00:17:00.92\00:17:02.62 or if you want to quote an individual, 00:17:02.65\00:17:04.32 we have customize artwork with their faces. 00:17:04.35\00:17:06.55 So you can use that for the presentation. 00:17:06.59\00:17:09.12 And the images, by the way, as I understood, Martin, 00:17:09.16\00:17:11.69 these images have been pre-selected 00:17:11.73\00:17:13.66 to be some of the best images on the topic. 00:17:13.70\00:17:16.23 Because sometimes people go to YouTube or Google 00:17:16.26\00:17:19.33 and they look at images 00:17:19.37\00:17:20.70 and it may not be the best suited 00:17:20.74\00:17:22.44 for that particular topic. 00:17:22.47\00:17:23.91 The other thing that amazed me was 00:17:23.94\00:17:26.17 about Solomon Temple, talk about that. 00:17:26.21\00:17:28.24 It showed the, the contemporary as well as the ancient version 00:17:28.28\00:17:34.15 and by just swiping your tool over that 00:17:34.18\00:17:36.95 you can see both of those. 00:17:36.99\00:17:38.32 Talk about that. 00:17:38.35\00:17:39.69 Wonderful interactive tool called our Before and After 00:17:39.72\00:17:42.19 allowing you to see these, these places, 00:17:42.22\00:17:44.73 these biblical places that you can see 00:17:44.76\00:17:46.39 how it was currently after many, many years, 00:17:46.43\00:17:50.37 and then we hired just a fantastic designer 00:17:50.40\00:17:53.07 to be able to show you what it looked like 00:17:53.10\00:17:55.10 back in the first century, back in its glory days. 00:17:55.14\00:17:57.34 So you can see how it's built, how it's structured. 00:17:57.37\00:18:00.08 Really get a better idea as you read through the text 00:18:00.11\00:18:01.91 when it describing these items what they look like. 00:18:01.94\00:18:05.21 Now we're living in the post paper era. 00:18:05.25\00:18:07.68 I think we can all agree on that, 00:18:07.72\00:18:09.18 paper is still being sold, we print on that, 00:18:09.22\00:18:11.62 but we're getting to the place where paper is becoming 00:18:11.65\00:18:13.89 almost nonessential with iPads and all the other things. 00:18:13.92\00:18:17.29 So Logos is ahead of the curve 00:18:17.33\00:18:18.83 when it comes to not having to write sermons any longer 00:18:18.86\00:18:22.20 but you can type those and carry them with you. 00:18:22.23\00:18:24.80 If you were saying to those who are watching the program, 00:18:24.83\00:18:27.14 giving them a nugget on 00:18:27.17\00:18:28.50 why they need to be a part of the Logos community, 00:18:28.54\00:18:31.27 what would you say? 00:18:31.31\00:18:32.74 You now have access to all your biblical resources 00:18:32.77\00:18:36.41 on the go, not being tied to 00:18:36.44\00:18:38.71 which ones am I going to bring with me, 00:18:38.75\00:18:40.22 if I am going on a mission trip, 00:18:40.25\00:18:41.58 if I am traveling. 00:18:41.62\00:18:42.95 Or I just happen to be on my daily routine 00:18:42.98\00:18:45.39 and run into someone 00:18:45.42\00:18:46.76 and I want to have access to resources 00:18:46.79\00:18:48.12 so I can tuck them through God's word. 00:18:48.16\00:18:50.43 That's the power of Logos, 00:18:50.46\00:18:51.99 you know, that will be on your tablet or on your Smartphone. 00:18:52.03\00:18:54.80 And to the Adventist community, 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.16 Martin, tell us why would it be necessary 00:18:56.20\00:18:58.63 to be apart from the Sabbath school teacher 00:18:58.67\00:19:01.00 to the lay pastor, to the student 00:19:01.04\00:19:02.70 all the way up to the professor, 00:19:02.74\00:19:04.21 why would Logos be a great benefit? 00:19:04.24\00:19:06.91 Everybody wants to be relevant and biblical at the same time, 00:19:06.94\00:19:11.58 and Logos facilitates both. 00:19:11.61\00:19:14.92 There is a tool we have called Cultural Concepts 00:19:14.95\00:19:18.02 that makes a sermon not only or in class, 00:19:18.05\00:19:21.06 a study class, or a small group Bible study, 00:19:21.09\00:19:23.73 not only interesting but accurate. 00:19:23.76\00:19:26.86 And that's important because while you're teaching 00:19:26.90\00:19:28.86 people are googling, testing you. 00:19:28.90\00:19:31.10 Quickly, give me the Logos website 00:19:31.13\00:19:32.67 that's been developed for this GC session. 00:19:32.70\00:19:35.30 Absolutely, because of the General Conference, 00:19:35.34\00:19:37.41 we're offering a phenomenal discount. 00:19:37.44\00:19:38.97 So if you just go to www.logos.com/60th. 00:19:39.01\00:19:44.01 Okay, well, thank you so much, Nate, for being here. 00:19:44.05\00:19:46.08 Thank you, Martin, for being here. 00:19:46.11\00:19:47.45 And friends, the Bible says, "In the beginning was the word, 00:19:47.48\00:19:50.89 the word was with God and the word was God." 00:19:50.92\00:19:53.19 You can tap into the power of Logos today. 00:19:53.22\00:19:55.72 God bless you. 00:19:55.76\00:20:00.86 Amen. And Peter Thomas. 00:21:12.23\00:21:14.24 And, Peter, thank you for joining us. 00:21:14.27\00:21:16.54 You know this is such a fascinating ministry, 00:21:16.57\00:21:19.94 especially the way in which God began the ministry. 00:21:19.97\00:21:23.91 Pastor Will James, tell us a little bit about 00:21:23.95\00:21:27.95 your move to California, 00:21:27.98\00:21:30.05 what you found there, and what you did about it? 00:21:30.09\00:21:34.32 Well, God called me 00:21:34.36\00:21:35.69 to the Paradise Valley Church 13 years ago, 00:21:35.72\00:21:38.53 and it was an institutional church at the time, 00:21:38.56\00:21:40.56 tied to Paradise Valley Hospital. 00:21:40.60\00:21:42.86 Shortly after I got there, they sold the hospital 00:21:42.90\00:21:46.43 and everybody said, well, the Church is going to die. 00:21:46.47\00:21:49.30 And to be very honest, 00:21:49.34\00:21:50.91 the church was not a vibrant church at that point, 00:21:50.94\00:21:53.48 it was basically a dying church. 00:21:53.51\00:21:58.98 But I believe that God wanted to become relevant 00:21:59.01\00:22:02.38 and meaningful to the community I lived in. 00:22:02.42\00:22:05.12 I've had a patient in all my ministry 00:22:05.15\00:22:06.65 that its church needs to do more than 00:22:06.69\00:22:09.29 just have worship on Sabbath morning. 00:22:09.32\00:22:11.26 They need to be reaching the community 00:22:11.29\00:22:13.40 and using the gifts that God has given to them. 00:22:13.43\00:22:15.80 And so I begin to educate my members 00:22:15.83\00:22:18.53 that they are all ordained of God, 00:22:18.57\00:22:20.84 they are all ministers of God, and the God is placed them 00:22:20.87\00:22:24.54 where they are to do a work for Him. 00:22:24.57\00:22:27.58 And we begin to explore 00:22:27.61\00:22:29.38 what God wanted us to do in National City, 00:22:29.41\00:22:33.92 where our church is located, 00:22:33.95\00:22:35.35 in the heart of San Diego, really. 00:22:35.38\00:22:37.89 And our community services was giving out day 00:22:37.92\00:22:41.52 old bread in making quilts 00:22:41.56\00:22:43.53 and doing the typical little thing. 00:22:43.56\00:22:45.59 But as the recession hit, 00:22:45.63\00:22:49.13 I felt compelled to really step up the food ministry 00:22:49.16\00:22:52.97 and I put an ad on Craig's list for a walk-in cooler. 00:22:53.00\00:22:56.37 To make a long story short, 00:22:56.40\00:22:57.74 we had a walk-in cooler donated to us, 00:22:57.77\00:22:59.37 a company came in and installed it 00:22:59.41\00:23:00.78 for us free of cost 00:23:00.81\00:23:02.14 and we began to grow our food ministry. 00:23:02.18\00:23:05.58 In that first year, we gave out 1000 pounds of food a week, 00:23:05.61\00:23:08.85 on average to 300, 400 families 00:23:08.88\00:23:12.52 and we thought we were really getting busy. 00:23:12.55\00:23:15.89 Today were giving out 11,000 pounds of food a week 00:23:15.92\00:23:19.19 to over 500 families and through that ministry, 00:23:19.23\00:23:23.26 God has lead us into a refugee ministry, 00:23:23.30\00:23:26.20 which we call a Refugee Assimilation Project. 00:23:26.23\00:23:29.37 It's to just try to help these refugees 00:23:29.40\00:23:32.17 that are floundering in our community 00:23:32.21\00:23:35.04 to learn English, to learn job skills 00:23:35.08\00:23:37.71 and become successful in life. 00:23:37.75\00:23:41.12 Go back and explain to us because many of us aren't, 00:23:41.15\00:23:44.65 there's many areas where we don't have many refugees. 00:23:44.69\00:23:48.52 Where these refugees coming from? 00:23:48.56\00:23:50.89 Why are they here? 00:23:50.93\00:23:52.79 How did they end up in United States 00:23:52.83\00:23:54.83 where they don't speak the language, 00:23:54.86\00:23:56.83 they don't know what's going on? 00:23:56.87\00:23:59.67 What is the program that's bringing them here? 00:23:59.70\00:24:01.70 The United Nations are actually relocates refugees. 00:24:01.74\00:24:05.91 They are from war-torn communities 00:24:05.94\00:24:08.21 or communities that are going through religious persecution. 00:24:08.24\00:24:13.01 Our first group of refugees were Bhutanese, 00:24:13.05\00:24:16.02 who have been driven out of Bhutan by the king, no less. 00:24:16.05\00:24:19.09 He did an ethnic cleansing 00:24:19.12\00:24:20.46 of all Christians and Hindus in his country, 00:24:20.49\00:24:23.22 he wanted only a Buddhist country. 00:24:23.26\00:24:25.59 And so they fled to Nepal, 00:24:25.63\00:24:27.46 where they had lived in refugee camps 00:24:27.50\00:24:29.03 for 15 to 18 years, and really in squalor, 00:24:29.06\00:24:33.23 and finally the United Nations 00:24:33.27\00:24:35.80 got involved and relocated them. 00:24:35.84\00:24:38.87 And they were one of the first groups 00:24:38.91\00:24:40.91 that God gave us the privilege of working with. 00:24:40.94\00:24:45.21 Many of them completely illiterate 00:24:45.25\00:24:46.75 even in their mother tongue. 00:24:46.78\00:24:48.95 So it's very difficult for them to learn English 00:24:48.98\00:24:51.85 and really get established in America. 00:24:51.89\00:24:54.82 Yes, so now when they come here, 00:24:54.86\00:24:57.03 are they here for certain period of time or is there? 00:24:57.06\00:25:00.56 They are permanent here. 00:25:00.60\00:25:01.93 All right, they are permanent here. 00:25:01.96\00:25:03.30 They are legal residence, they are able to work, 00:25:03.33\00:25:05.37 they are able to get jobs. 00:25:05.40\00:25:07.20 What holds them back of course, is the language. 00:25:07.24\00:25:11.07 If you can't speak English, 00:25:11.11\00:25:12.44 there's very few jobs that you can really do. 00:25:12.47\00:25:16.24 So when you first started ministering to the refugees, 00:25:16.28\00:25:20.38 what were the projects that you were putting forth? 00:25:20.42\00:25:24.79 Well, we began to teach them English and job skills. 00:25:24.82\00:25:30.59 We found they really struggled with depression. 00:25:30.63\00:25:33.70 You know, I mean, 00:25:33.73\00:25:35.06 you stop and think what they've been through. 00:25:35.10\00:25:36.43 Yes. 00:25:36.46\00:25:37.80 They've been driven from their home, 00:25:37.83\00:25:39.47 they've lost everything they have, 00:25:39.50\00:25:41.14 many of their families been killed, 00:25:41.17\00:25:43.51 and they've come to America 00:25:43.54\00:25:45.57 where they have been given this false picture 00:25:45.61\00:25:49.01 that America is a land full of milk and honey, 00:25:49.04\00:25:51.28 and they will have everything just given to them. 00:25:51.31\00:25:52.75 Yes. 00:25:52.78\00:25:54.12 And they get here and it's not that way. 00:25:54.15\00:25:56.05 They have to work, they have to work hard. 00:25:56.08\00:25:58.79 And a lot of them got depressed, 00:25:58.82\00:26:01.39 and we remember there was a little lady 00:26:01.42\00:26:03.43 once who wrote a statement 00:26:03.46\00:26:04.79 that if you get your hands in the soil 00:26:04.83\00:26:07.60 it's therapeutic to the mind and body. 00:26:07.63\00:26:10.67 And we believe that message is from God 00:26:10.70\00:26:13.30 and we've chose to follow that, and we found it really worked. 00:26:13.34\00:26:17.67 As we open a community garden up to them, 00:26:17.71\00:26:19.67 they start working and they dig out on that garden 00:26:19.71\00:26:21.98 and started chattering and singing 00:26:22.01\00:26:24.28 and the depression lifted 00:26:24.31\00:26:25.65 and they were happy and cheerful, 00:26:25.68\00:26:28.02 and able to learn. 00:26:28.05\00:26:29.82 And God has just really, really blessed them. 00:26:29.85\00:26:32.85 So besides the Bhutanese, 00:26:32.89\00:26:34.66 who else are you ministering to? 00:26:34.69\00:26:36.12 What people groups? 00:26:36.16\00:26:37.49 Many different people groups. 00:26:37.53\00:26:39.36 In fact, now I'm translating church into eight, 00:26:39.39\00:26:41.83 seven languages every Sabbath. 00:26:41.86\00:26:43.20 Oh, my. 00:26:43.23\00:26:44.57 We have Arabic, we have French, we have the Bhutanese, 00:26:44.60\00:26:47.50 we have Laotians, we have a French, 00:26:47.54\00:26:51.31 Spanish, Swahili, Kinyarwanda, 00:26:51.34\00:26:55.04 many, many different language groups. 00:26:55.08\00:26:56.78 It doesn't really matter what language group it is, 00:26:56.81\00:26:59.51 they're there to learn English. 00:26:59.55\00:27:00.88 Amen. 00:27:00.92\00:27:02.25 And so on we're helping them and ministering to Africans, 00:27:02.28\00:27:06.12 and Asians, and in Arabic nations. 00:27:06.15\00:27:09.89 It's just amazing what God is doing. 00:27:09.92\00:27:11.83 And how many refugees are you working with, 00:27:11.86\00:27:14.66 kind of, do you have a certain number 00:27:14.70\00:27:17.27 that you're working with? 00:27:17.30\00:27:18.63 Well, it keeps growing constantly. 00:27:18.67\00:27:20.00 We try to keep our classes small 00:27:20.04\00:27:22.70 so that we can give individual attention, 00:27:22.74\00:27:24.97 but as they learn English and they start getting jobs, 00:27:25.01\00:27:28.14 we're still working with them. 00:27:28.18\00:27:29.81 We have helped over 100 families get jobs 00:27:29.84\00:27:32.61 and become self-sufficient. 00:27:32.65\00:27:34.82 You know, and our number 00:27:34.85\00:27:37.89 that is probably around 200 families right now 00:27:37.92\00:27:40.12 that we're really actively touching. 00:27:40.16\00:27:42.79 Now how large is your church? 00:27:42.82\00:27:45.33 We have 850 members. All right. 00:27:45.36\00:27:47.86 It's a good size church, 00:27:47.90\00:27:49.23 A good size church which would take, 00:27:49.26\00:27:52.83 but still you've got a strong percentage 00:27:52.87\00:27:56.30 of your people are very active 00:27:56.34\00:27:57.91 if you're doing all of these projects. 00:27:57.94\00:28:00.18 Yes, we have over 125 volunteers working every week. 00:28:00.21\00:28:04.25 Glory to God. 00:28:04.28\00:28:05.61 That is very exciting, that's exciting. 00:28:05.65\00:28:08.28 One is as old as 99 years old. 00:28:08.32\00:28:11.39 With these refugees, 00:28:11.42\00:28:12.99 how many are Christians of other denominations 00:28:13.02\00:28:15.62 and how many are other world religions? 00:28:15.66\00:28:19.26 We have Buddhists, we have Hindu, 00:28:19.29\00:28:20.86 we have Muslims as well as other Christians. 00:28:20.90\00:28:25.53 We don't, we don't even try to decide or decipher 00:28:25.57\00:28:29.47 what they are, we're there just loving them as they are 00:28:29.50\00:28:32.84 and many of them choose to start coming to church 00:28:32.87\00:28:35.71 and being part of our family. 00:28:35.74\00:28:37.65 We just want to be their family. 00:28:37.68\00:28:40.55 And how did Peter become involved 00:28:40.58\00:28:43.92 in your refugee project? 00:28:43.95\00:28:46.05 Peter actually lived in Washington State 00:28:46.09\00:28:48.06 and he came down 00:28:48.09\00:28:49.42 because he had heard about our ministry 00:28:49.46\00:28:50.83 and heard that there was a lot of 00:28:50.86\00:28:52.53 Arabic speaking refugees coming there, 00:28:52.56\00:28:55.13 and he came down to see what was happening. 00:28:55.16\00:28:57.20 So, Peter, what are you doing now 00:28:57.23\00:28:59.40 at the Paradise Valley Church? 00:28:59.43\00:29:01.90 Well, my focus is that the Muslims, 00:29:01.94\00:29:04.67 the Arabic speaking Muslims who live in San Diego. 00:29:04.71\00:29:08.08 You know that the population of Muslim 00:29:08.11\00:29:09.71 now in the world is about 1.7 billion. 00:29:09.74\00:29:11.91 Yes. 00:29:11.95\00:29:13.28 And out of that we have a 100,000 to 150,000 Muslims 00:29:13.31\00:29:17.59 who live in San Diego. 00:29:17.62\00:29:19.09 We have 100,000 to 150,000 of Chaldeans 00:29:19.12\00:29:22.19 who live in El Cajon, which is a nearby city. 00:29:22.22\00:29:25.63 And so I came to work with the Muslim population, 00:29:25.66\00:29:29.03 you know, because I grew up in Iraq, 00:29:29.06\00:29:31.43 I know the culture, I know the language, 00:29:31.47\00:29:34.80 I have been immersed in Islamic study 00:29:34.84\00:29:37.31 so to speak from the time I was young, you know. 00:29:37.34\00:29:40.61 So it wasn't something strange to me, 00:29:40.64\00:29:43.98 but I love the people. 00:29:44.01\00:29:45.51 So I began to reach out to them 00:29:45.55\00:29:47.42 and what helped is that Paradise Valley, 00:29:47.45\00:29:49.62 already have a feeding program. 00:29:49.65\00:29:51.45 So we start carrying stuff to them 00:29:51.49\00:29:53.46 and caring for them or providing for them, 00:29:53.49\00:29:55.29 as a result we became friends. 00:29:55.32\00:29:57.66 So today, I have about 35 families 00:29:57.69\00:30:00.70 that I'm in excellent relationship with them. 00:30:00.73\00:30:04.47 You know, I visit them at their home. 00:30:04.50\00:30:06.57 They have gone through our English school. 00:30:06.60\00:30:11.51 If they-- Somebody is sick they call me. 00:30:11.54\00:30:13.58 If somebody... If they're gonna have a baby. 00:30:13.61\00:30:15.34 They'd call me to go to the hospital 00:30:15.38\00:30:17.11 and visit and have a prayer. 00:30:17.15\00:30:19.51 In every area of their life, 00:30:19.55\00:30:21.18 you know, they include me, so they call. 00:30:21.22\00:30:23.28 And I include them in activities 00:30:23.32\00:30:24.95 that we have in the church as well. 00:30:24.99\00:30:27.12 So when we have a new birth, 00:30:27.16\00:30:28.76 I'll arrange for them to have baby dedication. 00:30:28.79\00:30:31.59 So they will experience. You know they don't mind. 00:30:31.63\00:30:33.70 Muslims, they don't mind prayer 00:30:33.73\00:30:35.06 because they want their children to be blessed. 00:30:35.10\00:30:37.97 They want their children to live in an environment 00:30:38.00\00:30:40.14 where there would be no hatred, no anger, none of that. 00:30:40.17\00:30:43.30 They have the same needs as we do. 00:30:43.34\00:30:45.41 So when you reach out to them 00:30:45.44\00:30:46.81 and they see that you really care for them, 00:30:46.84\00:30:49.28 then they respond. 00:30:49.31\00:30:50.95 I've given out more Bibles to this group 00:30:50.98\00:30:53.21 than any other group because... 00:30:53.25\00:30:54.58 You-- Wait a minute. 00:30:54.62\00:30:55.95 You're saying you're giving out 00:30:55.98\00:30:57.32 more Bibles to the Muslims than any other group? 00:30:57.35\00:30:58.92 Really? So... 00:30:58.95\00:31:00.29 Because they want to know what does the Bible says. 00:31:00.32\00:31:03.39 And I know the Quran and I read the Quran with them 00:31:03.43\00:31:06.93 when I visit them at their home. 00:31:06.96\00:31:08.86 And I us the verses in the Quran 00:31:08.90\00:31:11.03 that talks about Jesus 00:31:11.07\00:31:12.63 to refer them to the Old and the New Testament 00:31:12.67\00:31:15.47 and they are very receptive. 00:31:15.50\00:31:16.84 There's no problem with that. 00:31:16.87\00:31:19.07 You know, so they are-- their openness 00:31:19.11\00:31:20.94 and they know we care about them. 00:31:20.98\00:31:22.84 We are not trying to convert them per se, 00:31:22.88\00:31:25.11 but we're trying to help them understand 00:31:25.15\00:31:27.68 that there's a bigger picture 00:31:27.72\00:31:29.38 and for them to see the bigger picture, 00:31:29.42\00:31:31.09 they have to go to the Old Testament 00:31:31.12\00:31:32.75 and the New Testament and read it. 00:31:32.79\00:31:34.72 So many times I get them involved in three books 00:31:34.76\00:31:38.03 to study together in our study and interaction with them. 00:31:38.06\00:31:42.23 So it's been very, very enjoyable time with them 00:31:42.26\00:31:44.93 and I really appreciate 00:31:44.97\00:31:47.24 the friendship that I have with them, you know. 00:31:47.27\00:31:49.97 So tell us a little about the effect this is having? 00:31:50.01\00:31:56.24 Do you have any one that is interested in converting in? 00:31:56.28\00:31:59.05 You have been doing this for a year? 00:31:59.08\00:32:01.18 Well, no, I've been there about three years now. 00:32:01.22\00:32:02.98 Oh, three years, okay. Three years. 00:32:03.02\00:32:04.85 And, you know, we began gradually 00:32:04.89\00:32:07.26 and now we have about 35 families 00:32:07.29\00:32:09.52 that we are actually involved. 00:32:09.56\00:32:11.39 You know, for me, as I see 00:32:11.43\00:32:13.66 how God is working in their life. 00:32:13.70\00:32:15.50 For example, one man, he told me the story. 00:32:15.53\00:32:19.20 He... 00:32:19.23\00:32:20.57 They had to, as a refugee, 00:32:20.60\00:32:22.64 he has to run away from his country, 00:32:22.67\00:32:24.41 Muslim country to another country, okay. 00:32:24.44\00:32:27.48 Now when he arrived to this new country, 00:32:27.51\00:32:29.44 he did not have the proper papers, 00:32:29.48\00:32:32.81 so he was kind of illegal. 00:32:32.85\00:32:36.08 Sooner or later they arrested him 00:32:36.12\00:32:38.29 and because he didn't have proper papers, 00:32:38.32\00:32:40.49 they put him in prison 00:32:40.52\00:32:41.86 and they were gonna deport him back to his country. 00:32:41.89\00:32:45.16 Now he came across to this nation 00:32:45.19\00:32:47.96 with his wife and two of his kids, okay. 00:32:48.00\00:32:51.70 And he knew that if he should go back, 00:32:51.73\00:32:53.67 his life will be a threat, 00:32:53.70\00:32:55.04 plus he would be separated 00:32:55.07\00:32:56.40 from his family for probably forever. 00:32:56.44\00:32:58.57 So it was a big concern for him. 00:32:58.61\00:33:00.61 So they held them for a week 00:33:00.64\00:33:02.04 and two, a month, a month and a half went by 00:33:02.08\00:33:05.11 and they are in the process 00:33:05.15\00:33:06.68 of doing the papers to export him. 00:33:06.72\00:33:09.18 But then, while he was sitting in that prison cell, 00:33:09.22\00:33:13.19 one day he looked at the door and right by the door 00:33:13.22\00:33:16.32 somebody have carved a cross 00:33:16.36\00:33:19.13 and he looked at that cross and he told me that, 00:33:19.16\00:33:22.13 the thing came to his mind at that moment was to pray. 00:33:22.16\00:33:26.03 But he didn't know how to pray. 00:33:26.07\00:33:27.77 He didn't know how to pray the right prayer he thought. 00:33:27.80\00:33:31.01 But he looked at the cross and all he could remember 00:33:31.04\00:33:34.04 and know to say was, the God of the cross help me. 00:33:34.08\00:33:39.08 He said, after he said that, in matter of two or three days, 00:33:39.11\00:33:42.88 he was let out of the prison. 00:33:42.92\00:33:44.45 They set him free. 00:33:44.49\00:33:45.82 Though his papers were illegal, they let him free. 00:33:45.85\00:33:48.62 They said, you go, you're free to go to your wife. 00:33:48.66\00:33:51.76 And when he was set free, then a few days later 00:33:51.79\00:33:54.00 the United Nation called in 00:33:54.03\00:33:55.36 and said, your papers are ready to leave to the U.S. 00:33:55.40\00:33:58.23 and he came here and joined us here. 00:33:58.27\00:34:00.84 And he hears many stories like that. 00:34:00.87\00:34:02.87 That you know, that God is working already. 00:34:02.90\00:34:05.44 God is preparing the souls. 00:34:05.47\00:34:06.81 So we just pray that the Lord will bring us people 00:34:06.84\00:34:09.38 that we can plant more seeds in their heart. 00:34:09.41\00:34:12.31 As a result, we have one family who-- 00:34:12.35\00:34:15.98 I really can't go into more details, 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.95 but I say that God's spirit is working on many hearts 00:34:17.99\00:34:21.29 that we don't realize. 00:34:21.32\00:34:24.16 And sometimes, when I'm checking in churches 00:34:24.19\00:34:26.76 and ask them, have you ever noticed a lady 00:34:26.80\00:34:29.60 covered head walking in the street? 00:34:29.63\00:34:31.27 What is your reaction to that person 00:34:31.30\00:34:33.13 when you see them? 00:34:33.17\00:34:34.50 Most people tell me, 00:34:34.54\00:34:35.87 oh, I cross the street 00:34:35.90\00:34:37.27 or I will go the other direction. 00:34:37.31\00:34:39.51 They avoid this person. 00:34:39.54\00:34:40.88 I said, well, do you know 00:34:40.91\00:34:42.24 or do you think that this woman, 00:34:42.28\00:34:43.61 God has already been working with her. 00:34:43.65\00:34:45.08 And she will be receptive 00:34:45.11\00:34:46.95 if you should stop and communicate with her. 00:34:46.98\00:34:49.65 So I encourage people to make contact with people 00:34:49.68\00:34:53.39 because God is working in the lives of people. 00:34:53.42\00:34:55.96 And you know that 90 percent 00:34:55.99\00:34:58.09 of people learning about Jesus is through dreams. 00:34:58.13\00:35:00.96 90 percent of the Muslim, yes. 00:35:01.00\00:35:02.33 The Muslim world, yes. Yes. 00:35:02.36\00:35:03.70 It's the dreams. 00:35:03.73\00:35:05.07 And we have experiences like that as well. 00:35:05.10\00:35:07.44 So God is alive. 00:35:07.47\00:35:08.80 He's working because they are the children of Abraham. 00:35:08.84\00:35:13.44 And there's a classic scripture in the Bible. 00:35:13.48\00:35:17.21 It's in Luke 13:16. 00:35:17.25\00:35:19.21 And here Jesus have healed the woman 00:35:19.25\00:35:21.95 and He was criticized 00:35:21.98\00:35:23.59 for healing a woman on the Sabbath day. 00:35:23.62\00:35:25.99 Then He turned to the accusers and He said to them, 00:35:26.02\00:35:29.99 "Shouldn't a daughter of Abraham be set free, 00:35:30.03\00:35:35.10 who's been set, who is in bound, 00:35:35.13\00:35:37.67 who Satan has bound her. 00:35:37.70\00:35:39.33 Set free on the Sabbath day." 00:35:39.37\00:35:41.50 And I take the scripture to be very-- 00:35:41.54\00:35:43.81 How would I say? 00:35:43.84\00:35:45.17 A message for us as Seventh-day Adventist 00:35:45.21\00:35:47.31 because Muslims are the children of Abraham. 00:35:47.34\00:35:49.91 Okay. 00:35:49.94\00:35:51.28 And this lady that you see 00:35:51.31\00:35:53.15 in the street covered or in the market, 00:35:53.18\00:35:55.38 she is the daughter of Abraham. 00:35:55.42\00:35:58.45 Shouldn't she be set free from her worries, 00:35:58.49\00:36:01.52 her concerns, her uncertainty? 00:36:01.56\00:36:06.16 Life is changing constantly with them, 00:36:06.19\00:36:08.50 they fear, and anxiety they have. 00:36:08.53\00:36:10.80 And then shouldn't that, 00:36:10.83\00:36:13.37 setting people or giving them the freedom, 00:36:13.40\00:36:16.60 shouldn't that be done by Seventh-day Adventist 00:36:16.64\00:36:18.41 because it's done on the Sabbath. 00:36:18.44\00:36:19.77 To be that means that, we as Seventh-day Adventist 00:36:19.81\00:36:23.28 are the only one who can help those individuals 00:36:23.31\00:36:27.35 to be set free from their bondage. 00:36:27.38\00:36:29.32 Well, we know that, 00:36:29.35\00:36:31.49 have enough exposure to ministries 00:36:31.52\00:36:34.49 that work with the Muslims to know that 00:36:34.52\00:36:36.96 most Muslims think of Christians as being-- 00:36:36.99\00:36:40.13 When you use the word Christian, 00:36:40.16\00:36:41.56 they are thinking that you are pork eating, 00:36:41.60\00:36:44.27 idol worshiping, alcohol drinking person. 00:36:44.30\00:36:49.40 They associate that with Catholicism and the crusades. 00:36:49.44\00:36:53.21 But, I do believe, you know, we don't often think of 00:36:53.24\00:36:57.81 or speak of Muslims also being children of Abraham. 00:36:57.85\00:37:01.92 We think of the Jews, we think of Christians, 00:37:01.95\00:37:04.39 but they also are children of Abraham. 00:37:04.42\00:37:07.42 And I do believe we are uniquely-- 00:37:07.46\00:37:09.52 As a Seventh-day Adventist 00:37:09.56\00:37:10.89 we're uniquely positioned to minister to the Jews. 00:37:10.93\00:37:14.36 We are uniquely positioned to minister to Muslims. 00:37:14.40\00:37:18.00 And so our time is coming down here. 00:37:18.03\00:37:21.30 But I did want-- You mentioned to me 00:37:21.34\00:37:22.97 that there is one family that is, 00:37:23.00\00:37:25.74 at the point of conversion, 00:37:25.77\00:37:27.14 who is also, they are giving Bible studies 00:37:27.18\00:37:29.68 and getting others interested in Bible studies. 00:37:29.71\00:37:32.75 So it all basically begins with that bond of love, 00:37:32.78\00:37:37.42 showing that you care 00:37:37.45\00:37:39.32 and this is for all of your ministries. 00:37:39.35\00:37:42.22 Now you're feeding, how many pounds? 00:37:42.26\00:37:46.56 11,000 pounds a week. 00:37:46.59\00:37:48.50 11,000 pounds a week 00:37:48.53\00:37:50.27 is going through your Foods Ministry. 00:37:50.30\00:37:53.97 You are teaching these immigrants 00:37:54.00\00:37:57.04 how to speak English. 00:37:57.07\00:37:58.61 35 hours a week 00:37:58.64\00:37:59.97 English language and job training classes. 00:38:00.01\00:38:02.24 Five days a week. 35 hours a week you are doing. 00:38:02.28\00:38:04.85 That's amazing. 00:38:04.88\00:38:07.25 And you have got your church so involved that-- 00:38:07.28\00:38:12.95 Do you think that your members are drawing near to the Lord 00:38:12.99\00:38:17.59 because of their involvement with this ministry? 00:38:17.63\00:38:19.86 Our church is much, much more spiritual today. 00:38:19.89\00:38:23.06 Praise God. And much more active for God. 00:38:23.10\00:38:25.37 And it has truly changed our church for good. 00:38:25.40\00:38:28.37 Amen. 00:38:28.40\00:38:29.74 What's your vision for the future, pastor? 00:38:29.77\00:38:32.67 Just to be faithful to what God calls. 00:38:32.71\00:38:34.61 He keeps opening new doors. 00:38:34.64\00:38:37.05 I mean, this Muslim ministry is a new ministry for us. 00:38:37.08\00:38:40.42 Yes. 00:38:40.45\00:38:42.05 Everything we have done has just been, being faithful 00:38:42.08\00:38:44.19 to what God has called us to do. 00:38:44.22\00:38:45.95 And as He opens the new door, we step through. 00:38:45.99\00:38:48.86 I don't know where He's leading us. 00:38:48.89\00:38:51.23 I don't know what the next step is. 00:38:51.26\00:38:53.50 I'm beginning to get a feeling 00:38:53.53\00:38:55.00 that we've got a Farsi language beginning to come to us. 00:38:55.03\00:38:58.73 And so that we, 00:38:58.77\00:39:00.10 an eighth language for us to translate. 00:39:00.14\00:39:02.40 And, you know, we just want to be faithful. 00:39:02.44\00:39:05.51 Amen. 00:39:05.54\00:39:06.88 Well, and you are translating your services right now 00:39:06.91\00:39:09.01 in eight different languages? 00:39:09.04\00:39:10.38 Seven languages. Seven languages. 00:39:10.41\00:39:11.75 That will be the eight. Soon to be eighth probably. 00:39:11.78\00:39:13.35 Soon to be eighth. 00:39:13.38\00:39:14.92 I believe that the Paradise Valley Church 00:39:14.95\00:39:18.72 and what you and your church members are doing-- 00:39:18.75\00:39:21.66 What a role model to the rest of us. 00:39:21.69\00:39:24.96 You know, we may not have refugees in our area, 00:39:24.99\00:39:27.50 but we have people who abound by Satan, 00:39:27.53\00:39:29.66 who need to know the truth, 00:39:29.70\00:39:32.03 and if all churches could just be activated. 00:39:32.07\00:39:35.67 If we would get off the pews 00:39:35.70\00:39:37.41 and get out and reach the community, 00:39:37.44\00:39:39.61 we will speed up the process of Jesus returns. 00:39:39.64\00:39:42.24 We must, we must have a ministry 00:39:42.28\00:39:43.61 that has called us to and prepared us for 00:39:43.65\00:39:45.78 and gifted us for that we're doing. 00:39:45.81\00:39:47.92 It's not enough just we coming to church 00:39:47.95\00:39:50.92 and going through the motions of church. 00:39:50.95\00:39:55.29 You know, you are 501s Friendships for Hope. 00:39:55.32\00:39:57.89 Is that 501 (c) (3) Organization 00:39:57.93\00:40:00.83 and so you can take donations. 00:40:00.86\00:40:03.87 If there are those of you who are at home, 00:40:03.90\00:40:06.13 who feel like the Lord is telling you that 00:40:06.17\00:40:09.14 or maybe the Holy Spirit is moving upon you 00:40:09.17\00:40:11.41 that you would like to support this ministry, 00:40:11.44\00:40:13.68 you can go to Friendships, with an S, 00:40:13.71\00:40:17.25 FriendshipsForHope.org. 00:40:17.28\00:40:20.68 And perhaps your church would like to model 00:40:20.72\00:40:23.69 what the Paradise Valley Church is doing. 00:40:23.72\00:40:26.55 I just want to thank you, Pastor Will James. 00:40:26.59\00:40:28.56 For everything that-- It's been a privilege. 00:40:28.59\00:40:31.23 Well, just not for being here today, 00:40:31.26\00:40:32.79 but for following God's leading. 00:40:32.83\00:40:34.53 And, Peter, thank you so much for what you're doing. 00:40:34.56\00:40:37.13 And may God bless you richly as you continue to do His work. 00:40:37.17\00:40:40.94 Thank you. Thank you. 00:40:40.97\00:40:44.97 What a great interview. 00:40:45.01\00:40:46.37 Usually, Shelley Quinn 00:40:46.41\00:40:47.78 does the vast majority of our interviews 00:40:47.81\00:40:49.91 at a General Conference or at ASI. 00:40:49.94\00:40:52.11 But there were so many ministries 00:40:52.15\00:40:53.75 that we wanted to contact 00:40:53.78\00:40:55.12 and so many people that had so many good things 00:40:55.15\00:40:57.59 to say about the works of the Lord, 00:40:57.62\00:40:59.09 that we had to sort of spread ourselves 00:40:59.12\00:41:00.59 a little thinner this time. 00:41:00.62\00:41:01.96 John Lomacang did some interviews. 00:41:01.99\00:41:03.63 Danny Shelton did some interviews. 00:41:03.66\00:41:04.99 Jill Morikone also did some interviews 00:41:05.03\00:41:07.03 along with Shelley Quinn. 00:41:07.06\00:41:09.20 We sent Jill out to talk with Nathan Greene, 00:41:09.23\00:41:11.83 that name ought to be familiar to many of you. 00:41:11.87\00:41:14.47 He is dare I say, a world renowned painter, 00:41:14.50\00:41:18.41 an Adventist painter has done some beautiful paintings. 00:41:18.44\00:41:21.44 So we ask Jill to go out 00:41:21.48\00:41:22.81 and just speak with them just a little bit 00:41:22.84\00:41:24.18 and bring back a report, bring back a story. 00:41:24.21\00:41:27.02 Usually, when someone has great art, 00:41:27.05\00:41:29.75 be a music or song, painting, 00:41:29.78\00:41:33.39 there is a story behind each offering. 00:41:33.42\00:41:35.96 And of course, with Nathan Greene 00:41:35.99\00:41:37.63 that is no exception. 00:41:37.66\00:41:39.39 He has great material, 00:41:39.43\00:41:41.13 he's a beautiful painter and there is a story 00:41:41.16\00:41:43.03 that goes along with some of those paintings 00:41:43.06\00:41:44.57 and we sent Jill out 00:41:44.60\00:41:45.93 to speak with him and talk with him. 00:41:45.97\00:41:47.40 We sent her to his exhibit which was quite large 00:41:47.44\00:41:50.07 and elaborate at General Conference. 00:41:50.11\00:41:51.64 And he told us a little bit about 00:41:51.67\00:41:53.01 why he paints, how he paints, 00:41:53.04\00:41:54.94 the motivation behind his paintings 00:41:54.98\00:41:56.98 and the story that lies behind each offering 00:41:57.01\00:41:59.88 that he makes not only to the world, 00:41:59.91\00:42:02.25 but to the cause of Christ. 00:42:02.28\00:42:03.85 You'll like this interview. 00:42:03.89\00:42:05.55 I'm standing here with, with painter Nathan Greene. 00:42:05.59\00:42:09.06 And, Nathan, it's such a joy to have you here. 00:42:09.09\00:42:11.39 Thank you very much. 00:42:11.43\00:42:12.86 We're standing in front of his booth. 00:42:12.89\00:42:14.60 You can see your paintings behind here, 00:42:14.63\00:42:16.40 but before we get to some of the paintings 00:42:16.43\00:42:17.93 that you have on display here. 00:42:17.97\00:42:19.30 How long have you been painting professionally 00:42:19.33\00:42:21.04 and where did you attend art school? 00:42:21.07\00:42:22.97 Sure, I have been painting professionally 00:42:23.00\00:42:24.61 for 31, almost 32 years now. 00:42:24.64\00:42:27.38 I attended art school 00:42:27.41\00:42:28.74 at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. 00:42:28.78\00:42:31.05 But really, my mother was a landscape painter as a hobby 00:42:31.08\00:42:35.08 and that's what got me interested, 00:42:35.12\00:42:36.55 probably at age five. 00:42:36.58\00:42:37.92 So I've been drawing and painting ever since then. 00:42:37.95\00:42:40.06 So it's a natural God given gift 00:42:40.09\00:42:42.06 from the beginning and then you developed it? 00:42:42.09\00:42:44.09 I think God definitely gives 00:42:44.13\00:42:45.89 gifts of creativity in different ways. 00:42:45.93\00:42:48.33 And for me, it was probably partially genetics, 00:42:48.36\00:42:51.67 but it was also lots of practice. 00:42:51.70\00:42:53.64 You know, it's like learning a musical instrument. 00:42:53.67\00:42:55.47 If the more you practice, the better you get. 00:42:55.50\00:42:57.34 Yeah. And that's for sure. 00:42:57.37\00:42:58.71 Now we have several paintings behind us here in the booth. 00:42:58.74\00:43:01.01 There's a large one right in the middle, 00:43:01.04\00:43:03.24 a beautiful one of Jesus right at the resurrection. 00:43:03.28\00:43:05.91 Tell me about that painting. 00:43:05.95\00:43:07.28 Well, that painting, this is kind of unique, 00:43:07.32\00:43:09.18 this particular GC 00:43:09.22\00:43:11.19 because I have three originals with me, 00:43:11.22\00:43:13.42 that's the most recent painting, 00:43:13.46\00:43:15.16 I finished it about two months ago 00:43:15.19\00:43:17.16 and it's a depiction of the resurrection of Christ. 00:43:17.19\00:43:19.96 That something I've always wanted to do. 00:43:20.00\00:43:22.10 And I tried to make it unique. 00:43:22.13\00:43:24.83 In that you see an angel putting the robe on Christ, 00:43:24.87\00:43:28.60 something I've never seen done before. 00:43:28.64\00:43:30.97 So I thought this would be a special unique to portray it. 00:43:31.01\00:43:34.08 Amen. 00:43:34.11\00:43:35.44 And you have the guards falling down around. 00:43:35.48\00:43:38.31 Yeah, that was part of the fun for me 00:43:38.35\00:43:39.88 because I like to collect costume 00:43:39.91\00:43:42.72 and Roman armor and fact. 00:43:42.75\00:43:45.29 If you know Dick Steinberg and he and I happened 00:43:45.32\00:43:47.66 to eat lunch together the other day. 00:43:47.69\00:43:49.49 And we were comparing notes for our sources 00:43:49.52\00:43:51.86 for Roman armor and chain mail and swords 00:43:52.86\00:43:54.36 and it's become kind of a side hobby 00:43:54.40\00:43:57.17 for me to study Roman military history. 00:43:57.20\00:44:00.74 That's wonderful. 00:44:00.77\00:44:02.10 Now how long did this painting take you? 00:44:02.14\00:44:03.94 And how long would be paintings take on average? 00:44:03.97\00:44:06.17 On average there are three or four months per painting, 00:44:06.21\00:44:08.81 but this painting took a little longer, 00:44:08.84\00:44:10.55 about six months all together. 00:44:10.58\00:44:12.41 Four months of painting time, 00:44:12.45\00:44:13.95 about two months of preparation time, so-- 00:44:13.98\00:44:16.92 That's incredible. It's a long time. 00:44:16.95\00:44:18.45 You know, when we look at it, 00:44:18.49\00:44:19.82 we think, oh, Nathan Greene is gifted. 00:44:19.85\00:44:21.59 He just puts a few things up there, 00:44:21.62\00:44:23.12 but it's time, it's tedious. 00:44:23.16\00:44:24.76 It's tedious. 00:44:24.79\00:44:26.13 Tell me is it, is it frustrating, 00:44:26.16\00:44:28.16 is it exhilarating, is it relaxing, 00:44:28.20\00:44:30.33 how do you feel when you paint? 00:44:30.37\00:44:31.70 I think all of the above 00:44:31.73\00:44:33.07 would probably the best answer to that. 00:44:33.10\00:44:34.97 I really love what I do. 00:44:35.00\00:44:36.37 There are definitely times where it can be tedious, 00:44:36.40\00:44:38.81 it can a little frustrating. 00:44:38.84\00:44:40.31 The most challenging thing I ever do 00:44:40.34\00:44:42.74 is painting the face of Christ 00:44:42.78\00:44:44.81 because I know I'm trying to take a human model 00:44:44.85\00:44:47.88 and make him look divine, and also show compassion 00:44:47.92\00:44:51.35 and his love for humanity and it's hard to do that. 00:44:51.39\00:44:54.29 Sometimes I paint the face over and over and over 00:44:54.32\00:44:57.16 until I feel it's right. 00:44:57.19\00:44:58.69 In fact, the painting of the paralytic at Bethesda, 00:44:58.73\00:45:01.60 I painted Jesus face over 11 times before I kept it. 00:45:01.63\00:45:05.83 Oh, do you use the same model of Jesus always or different? 00:45:05.87\00:45:09.17 I've had two models over the last 25 years or so. 00:45:09.20\00:45:12.41 The first one for about 10 years. 00:45:12.44\00:45:14.04 The current one for about 14 years, 15. 00:45:14.08\00:45:18.51 Jesus was 30 to 33 during His ministry 00:45:18.55\00:45:21.32 and models they grew older and change. 00:45:21.35\00:45:23.45 Yes, it's true. 00:45:23.49\00:45:24.82 So I have to, you know, 00:45:24.85\00:45:26.19 I'm soon gonna need to find another model, so, yeah. 00:45:26.22\00:45:28.69 That make sense. 00:45:28.72\00:45:30.06 Now at the far end you have a painting here 00:45:30.09\00:45:31.76 and it's done in a hospital. 00:45:31.79\00:45:33.40 Jesus touching the nurse. 00:45:33.43\00:45:34.76 Tell me about that painting. Yes. 00:45:34.80\00:45:36.13 Well, years ago when I was 29, I'm bit older now. 00:45:36.16\00:45:39.13 But, when I was 29 I did a painting 00:45:39.17\00:45:41.30 that most people are familiar with, 00:45:41.34\00:45:43.17 it's called Chief of the Medical Staff. 00:45:43.20\00:45:45.07 I love that painting. 00:45:45.11\00:45:46.44 Christ. Thank you. 00:45:46.47\00:45:47.81 Christ is guarding the hand of the surgeon 00:45:47.84\00:45:49.68 and I get more feedback from that painting 00:45:49.71\00:45:51.91 probably from any other that I have done. 00:45:51.95\00:45:54.15 And it's crossed all denominational boundaries. 00:45:54.18\00:45:58.29 So for a number of years though, 00:45:58.32\00:45:59.95 we've had request to do something 00:45:59.99\00:46:02.02 to honor the profession of nursing. 00:46:02.06\00:46:04.13 And finally, my publisher actually commissioned it 00:46:04.16\00:46:06.86 and they will probably sell the original 00:46:06.90\00:46:08.73 after we've done prints and cards and things. 00:46:08.76\00:46:12.23 And this is to honor the profession of nursing. 00:46:12.27\00:46:15.97 You will notice if you look at the painting 00:46:16.00\00:46:17.81 that Jesus is not doing the work, 00:46:17.84\00:46:20.31 He's touching the shoulder of the nurse. 00:46:20.34\00:46:22.21 The nurse is caring for the patient. 00:46:22.24\00:46:24.68 And I like the idea that nurses think 00:46:24.71\00:46:26.92 that of themselves as the hands of Jesus 00:46:26.95\00:46:29.85 when they treat and care for, for patients. 00:46:29.88\00:46:32.15 Amen. 00:46:32.19\00:46:33.52 There's something else unique about that painting 00:46:33.56\00:46:35.32 that I'd like to point out, that the girl, 00:46:35.36\00:46:38.09 this is the nurse is our new daughter-in-law, 00:46:38.13\00:46:40.10 she married our son Tommy. 00:46:40.13\00:46:42.16 They were married-- 00:46:42.20\00:46:43.53 That's special. Two years ago, yes. 00:46:43.57\00:46:44.90 Now everybody thinks she's a nurse, she's not. 00:46:44.93\00:46:46.74 She's actually a graphic designer 00:46:46.77\00:46:48.30 and so is my son. 00:46:48.34\00:46:50.04 But now she is, you know, in theory 00:46:50.07\00:46:52.14 everybody thinks she's a nurse. 00:46:52.17\00:46:53.51 That is her grandfather posing as the patient. 00:46:53.54\00:46:56.24 His name is Warren Pop. 00:46:56.28\00:46:57.75 And I pose them together 00:46:57.78\00:47:00.02 because I think there's already was a strong emotional bond. 00:47:00.05\00:47:03.69 So the look of compassion on her face, is a natural. 00:47:03.72\00:47:05.89 It's real. It's natural. 00:47:05.92\00:47:07.26 Yeah, it's the real thing. Yes. 00:47:07.29\00:47:08.66 And that's special when you can put your family. 00:47:08.69\00:47:10.69 Some of your family in there-- Oh, yeah. 00:47:10.73\00:47:12.06 That is special. And that happens a lot. 00:47:12.09\00:47:13.43 Yeah, I like to tell people, we thought we would, 00:47:13.46\00:47:16.03 you know, raise our own models, that would be cheaper. 00:47:16.06\00:47:18.07 It has not been cheaper, but my children-- 00:47:18.10\00:47:22.17 I've never appeared in my paintings, 00:47:22.20\00:47:23.54 but my children have all been in paintings repeatedly. 00:47:23.57\00:47:26.11 Amen. That's wonderful. 00:47:26.14\00:47:27.84 Now we have over here-- 00:47:27.88\00:47:29.91 This is a very famous painting. 00:47:29.94\00:47:32.01 This one here was it commissioned 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.72 for General Conference? 00:47:33.75\00:47:35.08 The one that Jesus coming in the clouds? 00:47:35.12\00:47:36.58 It was commissioned for the GC 00:47:36.62\00:47:38.32 and unveiled in the Atlanta General Conference Session 00:47:38.35\00:47:41.62 five years ago. 00:47:41.66\00:47:43.73 The truth is, I wasn't quite finished with it. 00:47:43.76\00:47:45.86 When it was done 00:47:45.89\00:47:47.23 I was painting frantically the week of the GC 00:47:47.26\00:47:49.56 where my wife and kids held down the booth 00:47:49.60\00:47:51.97 and I brought it the last weekend. 00:47:52.00\00:47:53.34 Mark Finley said, well, it doesn't matter 00:47:53.37\00:47:55.50 if it's not ready, just bring it, we'll unveil it. 00:47:55.54\00:47:57.97 But the original now hangs in the atrium 00:47:58.01\00:48:00.68 of the General Conference building 00:48:00.71\00:48:02.71 in Silver Springs, Maryland. 00:48:02.74\00:48:04.15 And it's large. 00:48:04.18\00:48:05.51 It's, with the frame it's nine feet by six feet. 00:48:05.55\00:48:08.15 So-- 00:48:08.18\00:48:09.52 I like that about your paintings 00:48:09.55\00:48:10.89 because they each communicate truth. 00:48:10.92\00:48:12.25 Yes. You know it communicates-- 00:48:12.29\00:48:13.96 This one communicates the Second Coming of Jesus 00:48:13.99\00:48:16.09 and you see that. 00:48:16.12\00:48:17.46 It gives us hope looking-- 00:48:17.49\00:48:18.83 We're all looking forward to the Second Coming of Jesus. 00:48:18.86\00:48:20.63 Yeah. Absolutely. 00:48:20.66\00:48:22.00 So once you have a painting and it's commissioned and say, 00:48:22.03\00:48:24.17 like you said the original hangs in the GC, 00:48:24.20\00:48:26.30 then you can make postcards or cards 00:48:26.33\00:48:29.30 or what happens with it after that? 00:48:29.34\00:48:31.24 The first thing that happens when a painting is complete, 00:48:31.27\00:48:33.58 it's shipped to Los Angeles where we do scans, 00:48:33.61\00:48:36.14 a very high-end scan of it. 00:48:36.18\00:48:37.85 And then it's proofed up in Walla Walla at Color Press 00:48:37.88\00:48:40.55 and then they can make prints and postcards 00:48:40.58\00:48:42.85 and then the owner can receive the original. 00:48:42.88\00:48:46.45 But I want to mention a couple of things about this painting. 00:48:46.49\00:48:49.16 Again, family members appear in it, 00:48:49.19\00:48:51.33 but some special stories 00:48:51.36\00:48:53.09 are in that Second Coming painting. 00:48:53.13\00:48:54.86 There's a little girl being reunited 00:48:54.90\00:48:56.63 with her parents in this painting. 00:48:56.67\00:48:58.73 Her name was Christy Grellman. 00:48:58.77\00:49:00.87 Their parents were missionaries in Sierra Leone, Africa. 00:49:00.90\00:49:05.21 They came back because Christy became ill 00:49:05.24\00:49:08.04 and they are very dear friends of ours. 00:49:08.08\00:49:10.15 She passed away when she was four and half. 00:49:10.18\00:49:12.45 And I did a portrait of her... I'm sorry. 00:49:12.48\00:49:14.78 Yeah, it was a very sad especially, for the family. 00:49:14.82\00:49:17.95 And I put them in the painting being reunited with Christy 00:49:17.99\00:49:21.62 because I wanted to remind her parents 00:49:21.66\00:49:24.13 that they will see her again. 00:49:24.16\00:49:25.89 And there is... 00:49:25.93\00:49:27.26 That's beautiful. 00:49:27.30\00:49:28.63 That's a personal special touch. 00:49:28.66\00:49:30.03 And we know they were maybe many, many families 00:49:30.07\00:49:32.73 where that's gonna happen. 00:49:32.77\00:49:34.34 Maybe you've lost the loved one 00:49:34.37\00:49:35.70 and you're looking forward to the Second Coming 00:49:35.74\00:49:37.41 saying, "Someday soon Jesus is gonna come again 00:49:37.44\00:49:40.61 and I will be reunited." 00:49:40.64\00:49:41.98 That's precious. Absolutely. 00:49:42.01\00:49:43.35 There are other stories in that painting too 00:49:43.38\00:49:44.85 that we probably don't have time to discuss all of them. 00:49:44.88\00:49:46.98 But, like there's a baby 00:49:47.02\00:49:48.68 being reunited with the parents. 00:49:48.72\00:49:50.72 They are also friends of ours. 00:49:50.75\00:49:52.15 She had a miscarriage, which is a fairly common thing, 00:49:52.19\00:49:54.89 but for the mother especially and the father, 00:49:54.92\00:49:57.76 it's a very difficult thing to go through. 00:49:57.79\00:50:00.30 And I wanted them to remember, 00:50:00.33\00:50:02.50 you know, there will a chance again to care for this child. 00:50:02.53\00:50:05.27 Amen. Yeah. 00:50:05.30\00:50:06.63 Amen, that's beautiful. I like that. 00:50:06.67\00:50:09.04 Now moving on, we have another painting over here. 00:50:09.07\00:50:11.27 This is a civil war painting. Yes. 00:50:11.31\00:50:13.58 Lincoln coming to Richmond. So tell me about that painting. 00:50:13.61\00:50:16.44 Well, I have a real interest in American history. 00:50:16.48\00:50:19.88 For years as I work I listen to books on tape 00:50:19.91\00:50:23.59 and books on CD and usually biographies 00:50:23.62\00:50:25.82 in American history. 00:50:25.85\00:50:27.19 I admire certain people in history 00:50:27.22\00:50:29.16 that showed the character of Christ 00:50:29.19\00:50:31.29 in what they did and how they lived their lives. 00:50:31.33\00:50:33.50 I believe Abraham Lincoln was one of those people 00:50:33.53\00:50:35.76 that God chose this man for the time 00:50:35.80\00:50:38.87 because he was needed. 00:50:38.90\00:50:40.24 He entered Richmond 00:50:40.27\00:50:41.60 right after the Confederates fled 00:50:41.64\00:50:43.30 and what was special about this scene is, 00:50:43.34\00:50:46.07 there was a large group of newly freed slaves 00:50:46.11\00:50:48.31 working by the James River when he landed. 00:50:48.34\00:50:50.88 When they recognized Abraham Lincoln, 00:50:50.91\00:50:52.81 they immediately set down their tools 00:50:52.85\00:50:55.08 and they flocked around him and started celebrating 00:50:55.12\00:50:57.95 and thanking him for their freedom. 00:50:57.99\00:51:00.06 Within minutes, there were hundreds 00:51:00.09\00:51:01.82 and then thousands that were lining the streets 00:51:01.86\00:51:04.49 to see Abraham Lincoln. 00:51:04.53\00:51:06.80 The war ended five days after this. 00:51:06.83\00:51:09.46 Lee surrendered at Appomattox. 00:51:09.50\00:51:11.40 Ten days after this 00:51:11.43\00:51:12.83 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated. 00:51:12.87\00:51:14.64 So it was really, I think a special moment 00:51:14.67\00:51:16.91 where a large group got to thank him for their freedom. 00:51:16.94\00:51:20.18 The title of the painting is "New Birth of Freedom" 00:51:20.21\00:51:22.84 which of course is a quote from Gettysburg Address. 00:51:22.88\00:51:25.25 And the title also implies that freedom is an ongoing process, 00:51:25.28\00:51:30.35 we are still struggling for freedom. 00:51:30.39\00:51:32.62 And it's a maturing process that takes time. 00:51:32.65\00:51:35.79 And we all play a role in that process. 00:51:35.82\00:51:39.09 To me the beautiful thing about your paintings, 00:51:39.13\00:51:41.36 in addition, they're-- you are meticulous 00:51:41.40\00:51:43.26 and you are careful with what you do. 00:51:43.30\00:51:44.67 There's the attention to detail. 00:51:44.70\00:51:46.03 There's a level of professionalism, 00:51:46.07\00:51:48.10 but to me they all have heart. 00:51:48.14\00:51:49.90 Thank you. You know, you can see... 00:51:49.94\00:51:52.11 Like you mentioned in the other paintings, 00:51:52.14\00:51:53.61 you see with Lincoln and you see that 00:51:53.64\00:51:56.64 joy on the slaves, the freed slaves' faces. 00:51:56.68\00:51:59.35 And how they feel or with the Second Coming painting, 00:51:59.38\00:52:01.82 you see the joy of being reunited and I like that. 00:52:01.85\00:52:05.32 To me, that's what touches the heart in the paintings, 00:52:05.35\00:52:08.02 is there's that human element, that connection. 00:52:08.06\00:52:11.09 It's not just putting colors on a canvas, 00:52:11.13\00:52:13.70 you know, it's from your heart and that comes through. 00:52:13.73\00:52:16.23 Thank you. 00:52:16.26\00:52:17.60 I like that you used the word meticulous. 00:52:17.63\00:52:19.37 My family uses the word 00:52:19.40\00:52:20.74 obsessive compulsive perfectionist, 00:52:20.77\00:52:22.84 but that's okay, I like meticulous. 00:52:22.87\00:52:25.11 Amen. Amen. 00:52:25.14\00:52:26.47 Well, thank you so much, Nathan, for sharing. 00:52:26.51\00:52:29.04 I would say coming, 00:52:29.08\00:52:30.41 but you are already here at the booth. 00:52:30.45\00:52:32.21 But thank you for sharing with our 3ABN audience at home. 00:52:32.25\00:52:35.42 You're very welcome. Your gift-- 00:52:35.45\00:52:36.79 The talents God has given you in your paintings. 00:52:36.82\00:52:38.69 Thank you very much. 00:52:38.72\00:52:40.06 And we want to encourage you at home, 00:52:40.09\00:52:41.59 continue to pray for Nathan Greene 00:52:41.62\00:52:43.26 and support these paintings. 00:52:43.29\00:52:44.63 I know I'm a huge fan. Thank you. 00:52:44.66\00:52:46.96 And it is a huge blessing. 00:52:47.00\00:52:48.63 I love his paintings because they have heart. 00:52:48.66\00:52:51.97 Thank you so much. 00:52:52.00\00:52:53.64
