They said, "Sam Ocampo." 00:02:16.97\00:02:19.27 I'll take it. Thank you. 00:02:19.30\00:02:20.64 So, we're going to enjoy this interview together. 00:02:20.70\00:02:22.87 Delightful. Thank you, John. 00:02:22.90\00:02:24.27 And, friends, we always praise the Lord when we get a chance 00:02:24.31\00:02:26.98 to sing and give God the glory. 00:02:27.04\00:02:29.94 And I also want to thank you for your prayers 00:02:30.01\00:02:31.88 and always your financial support of this network 00:02:31.91\00:02:34.95 because that's how we keep going and growing 00:02:34.98\00:02:37.35 in preparation for the coming of the Lord. 00:02:37.39\00:02:39.95 Each of us is ministers in our own right but, 00:02:40.02\00:02:43.06 we know God is the power behind this massive engine 00:02:43.09\00:02:45.89 that's been going now for 31 years 00:02:45.93\00:02:48.66 and we give God the glory for all that He has done. 00:02:48.70\00:02:51.57 But-- because our guest is a musician, 00:02:51.60\00:02:56.20 we're not gonna lead into a song first, 00:02:56.24\00:02:59.27 we're gonna first talk to our guest and then we're gonna 00:02:59.31\00:03:03.24 bless you by the way with four songs. 00:03:03.28\00:03:05.58 So, if you want to record this program, 00:03:05.61\00:03:07.52 I would say you will be blessed over and over again 00:03:07.55\00:03:11.05 if you right now hit the record button. 00:03:11.09\00:03:13.29 If you're digital, you know, 00:03:13.36\00:03:14.89 how that goes you can make the adjustments accordingly. 00:03:14.92\00:03:17.66 But so good to have you here, Sam. 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.13 You know, there are those people 00:03:19.16\00:03:20.50 that are watching this program that say, 00:03:20.53\00:03:23.06 "I don't know who's Sam Ocampo is?" 00:03:23.10\00:03:24.90 So, begin by giving us, just first the snippet, who you are? 00:03:24.93\00:03:28.14 Where you're from? 00:03:28.17\00:03:29.50 And kind of, what you do right now? 00:03:29.54\00:03:30.87 Actually, what you have been doing? 00:03:30.91\00:03:32.24 Gladly. Yes. 00:03:32.27\00:03:33.64 John, I was born in Peru, South America. 00:03:33.68\00:03:37.21 And at the age of 14 my parents moved the family 00:03:37.25\00:03:41.92 to the United States. 00:03:41.95\00:03:43.28 Okay. 00:03:43.35\00:03:44.69 I am the oldest of four children. 00:03:44.72\00:03:46.86 My father is a preacher, also a professor 00:03:46.92\00:03:51.33 and we moved to Mountain View, California at age 14, 00:03:51.36\00:03:56.13 and I had already started with music lessons in South America. 00:03:56.16\00:04:01.57 And when we moved to Northern California, 00:04:01.60\00:04:04.64 they found a good teacher 00:04:04.67\00:04:06.44 at Stanford University in Palo Alto 00:04:06.47\00:04:09.88 and I continued my formal legit training. 00:04:09.91\00:04:15.25 Yes. 00:04:15.28\00:04:16.62 Then I heard some beautiful Music, there was a little bit 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.66 more improvisational in style, gospel music 00:04:20.69\00:04:24.76 and I started getting interested in that so, 00:04:24.79\00:04:27.40 my musical style branched out, it expanded 00:04:27.40\00:04:31.83 so I from the classical training, 00:04:31.87\00:04:34.87 I have moved into other genres, other areas of music as well. 00:04:34.90\00:04:40.04 So music was the first part of my life, 00:04:40.08\00:04:42.98 I should say that I'm known for. 00:04:43.01\00:04:45.21 But in addition to that, I also have a business degree. 00:04:45.25\00:04:50.05 Most of my life has been spent as a businessman 00:04:50.09\00:04:53.25 working for health care organizations, 00:04:53.32\00:04:55.29 most recently Adventist Health 00:04:55.32\00:04:57.49 prior to that Sutter Health in Sacramento. 00:04:57.53\00:05:00.33 Yes. 00:05:00.36\00:05:01.66 And prior to that my mentor organization 00:05:01.70\00:05:05.30 was Lakeland Health in Michigan. 00:05:05.33\00:05:07.80 Okay. 00:05:07.84\00:05:09.17 So I'd been able to combine both-- 00:05:09.20\00:05:11.77 I should say sides of the brain, 00:05:11.81\00:05:13.38 the systematic side and the artistic side. 00:05:13.41\00:05:15.28 That's good. 00:05:15.31\00:05:16.64 That was a mouthful of an answer, wasn't it? 00:05:16.68\00:05:18.08 No, but that's good. 00:05:18.11\00:05:19.45 Because a lot of times people need to know 00:05:19.48\00:05:20.98 what's behind the face, the voice, the gift, the skill, 00:05:21.02\00:05:24.89 and the blessing and-- 00:05:24.92\00:05:26.69 but also let me just, let's go down the next role 00:05:26.76\00:05:29.19 because you talked about your foundation being developed. 00:05:29.22\00:05:32.46 Was it because your family was musical? 00:05:32.49\00:05:34.76 How did that seed get planted? 00:05:34.83\00:05:37.13 My family was musical and I think my parents discovered 00:05:37.17\00:05:40.80 a certain talent of my being the oldest. 00:05:40.84\00:05:44.31 So they wanted to develop that. 00:05:44.34\00:05:47.44 My first teacher was an aunt of mine in South America 00:05:47.48\00:05:50.51 and then immediately I started working with her teacher, 00:05:50.55\00:05:53.62 a concert pianist who had worked in Paris 00:05:53.68\00:05:56.95 and worked with some of the better known 00:05:56.99\00:06:00.39 and more, you know, reputed musicians in Peru. 00:06:00.42\00:06:05.29 She worked with Claudio Arrau, 00:06:05.33\00:06:07.23 for example a classical pianist from Chile et cetera. 00:06:07.30\00:06:10.77 So that's what got me into the music. 00:06:10.80\00:06:13.10 It was my parent's interest. 00:06:13.13\00:06:15.60 And it's a musical family and being church people, you know, 00:06:15.64\00:06:19.24 we are always involved with the instruments, 00:06:19.27\00:06:22.14 with the singing or the praising. 00:06:22.18\00:06:24.71 So my father was a pastor, so at the time 00:06:24.75\00:06:28.65 so I was able to contribute to the ministery 00:06:28.68\00:06:31.85 as a family member. 00:06:31.89\00:06:33.56 And just to-- I want to get to a song here 00:06:33.59\00:06:35.19 in just a short moment 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.56 but we also share a common connection 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.76 and that's the Heritage Singers. 00:06:38.79\00:06:40.20 Absolutely. When did you begin with them? 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.56 I started with Heritage Singers in 1977. 00:06:42.60\00:06:45.10 Okay. 00:06:45.13\00:06:47.00 I started conversations in late '77 00:06:47.04\00:06:49.20 and I think we started playing in '78. 00:06:49.24\00:06:51.54 Okay. 00:06:51.57\00:06:52.91 I think, John, that I'm the first Latino 00:06:52.94\00:06:55.41 that started with Heritage Singers back then. 00:06:55.44\00:06:57.41 You know, I'm rolling back my roller desk the old word 00:06:57.45\00:07:01.15 and I think you are correct. 00:07:01.18\00:07:02.52 Yeah, yeah. I think so. 00:07:02.55\00:07:04.02 Because Fernando came like about '82. 00:07:04.05\00:07:07.32 Exactly right. Right. 00:07:07.39\00:07:08.72 Exactly right. 00:07:08.76\00:07:10.09 And my brother Nino is a bass player also very good musician. 00:07:10.13\00:07:13.83 Oh, yeah, yes. 00:07:13.86\00:07:15.16 And he started about a year later 00:07:15.20\00:07:17.93 with the Heritage Singers. 00:07:17.97\00:07:19.30 Max called him and Nino still plays with them. 00:07:19.33\00:07:21.87 I know, we did some traveling together. 00:07:21.90\00:07:23.24 We went to Philippines in 2009, I was there with him 00:07:23.27\00:07:25.47 when we sang in Cebu. 00:07:25.51\00:07:26.88 Fascinating. Absolutely. 00:07:26.91\00:07:28.24 Wow. Absolutely. 00:07:28.28\00:07:29.61 I've enjoyed that relationship immensely. 00:07:29.64\00:07:31.11 I've been a huge fan of the harmonies 00:07:31.15\00:07:35.05 especially the harmonies of the '70s 00:07:35.08\00:07:38.42 that the Heritage Singers, you know, 00:07:38.45\00:07:40.49 came up with this innovative. 00:07:40.56\00:07:41.89 That's right. 00:07:41.92\00:07:43.26 You know, they are almost like the lighthouse 00:07:43.29\00:07:45.49 and we've come this far by faith and just praise-- 00:07:45.53\00:07:48.80 "I'm willing Lord." "I'm willing Lord." 00:07:48.83\00:07:50.53 Were you on that one? I wasn't. 00:07:50.57\00:07:52.07 I wasn't but that's when I was in my early stages 00:07:52.10\00:07:54.77 of coming back to the church 00:07:54.80\00:07:56.14 and that album still this very day, 00:07:56.17\00:07:58.17 the harmony and the message of that music is just-- 00:07:58.21\00:08:00.51 And the beautiful orchestrations of those albums. 00:08:00.54\00:08:02.78 You know, I can hear those strings 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.18 and all that big music which-- 00:08:04.21\00:08:05.95 Tom King I think arranged that album and the prior ones 00:08:05.98\00:08:08.42 that I mentioned were arranged by Ron Huff. 00:08:08.45\00:08:10.52 But, you know, they put together amazing, 00:08:10.55\00:08:12.89 amazing products. 00:08:12.92\00:08:14.29 So I was a huge fan, I learned from it. 00:08:14.32\00:08:16.16 I feel mentored and I tell Max all the time 00:08:16.19\00:08:18.76 that he is a mentor of mine. 00:08:18.79\00:08:20.23 You know, I want to get to one of the songs, 00:08:20.26\00:08:22.06 lead us into this first one it's kind of people 00:08:22.10\00:08:25.07 that have been around for a while 00:08:25.10\00:08:26.43 may recognize the medley as 00:08:26.47\00:08:28.37 "Oh Danny Boy" but it's also the same music 00:08:28.40\00:08:30.91 that is put to the words 00:08:30.94\00:08:32.91 "Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise." 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.04 Absolutely. 00:08:35.08\00:08:36.41 Dottie Rambo, one of my favorite songwriters 00:08:36.44\00:08:39.65 in the religious realm 00:08:39.68\00:08:41.92 put words to "Danny Boy" and I think he "Saw My Need, 00:08:41.95\00:08:46.79 Beyond My Fault." 00:08:46.86\00:08:48.19 Is it "Beyond My Fault and Saw My Need." 00:08:48.22\00:08:49.56 And "Saw My Need." What a beautiful word? 00:08:49.59\00:08:51.79 You know, what a beautiful expression of a feeling? 00:08:51.83\00:08:55.06 So, yeah, put together a medley 00:08:55.10\00:08:58.50 based on that beautiful melody "Danny Boy." 00:08:58.53\00:09:02.50 So I hope that people enjoy it. I think we're gonna celebrate. 00:09:02.54\00:09:05.14 When I sit down on the piano, I sometimes don't know 00:09:05.17\00:09:08.64 what I'm going to play and I like that spontaneity. 00:09:08.68\00:09:11.81 So, you know, I'm going to be surprised as well 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.28 as we listen to it. 00:09:14.35\00:09:15.68 All right, we will sit back and enjoy this song. 00:09:15.72\00:09:17.15 Praise the Lord for the nuances of that message. 00:14:05.41\00:14:10.25 You began with "No More Night." 00:14:10.28\00:14:12.88 Tell us some of those medleys that were in there. 00:14:12.91\00:14:15.28 Like I told you little earlier I sometimes don't know 00:14:15.32\00:14:17.92 what I'm going to play 00:14:17.95\00:14:19.65 and I thought that these three songs would go together nicely 00:14:19.69\00:14:23.02 "No More Night" going into "Danny Boy" 00:14:23.06\00:14:27.10 or "Amazing Grace" 00:14:27.13\00:14:29.53 and then ended up with a tribute 00:14:29.56\00:14:32.63 that I'm starting to do for Andrae Crouch 00:14:32.67\00:14:36.00 who passed away about 12 months ago. 00:14:36.04\00:14:37.57 Yes. 00:14:37.61\00:14:38.94 And the last song I played was "Through It All" 00:14:38.97\00:14:41.51 one of the best songs ever. 00:14:41.54\00:14:43.55 "Through It All I've learned to trust in Jesus 00:14:43.61\00:14:45.88 I've learned to trust in God I thank God for the mountains 00:14:45.91\00:14:49.02 Thank Him for the valleys" 00:14:49.05\00:14:50.89 It's just a gorgeous, gorgeous song. 00:14:50.95\00:14:52.52 So, you know, that's what goes through my mind 00:14:52.55\00:14:54.79 and sometimes I don't know what I'm going to play. 00:14:54.82\00:14:56.99 Sometimes it just comes. 00:14:57.03\00:14:59.26 It is those mountains and those valleys 00:14:59.29\00:15:01.63 that develop our perseverance 00:15:01.66\00:15:05.73 and it is those valleys where we, 00:15:05.77\00:15:07.87 where we know that it's only temporary 00:15:07.90\00:15:10.54 but it's also at the mountain tops 00:15:10.61\00:15:12.24 that we remember that those are temporary. 00:15:12.27\00:15:14.74 So our lives as Christians are valleys and mountains, 00:15:14.78\00:15:16.64 valleys and mountains 00:15:16.68\00:15:18.01 and through it all, we learn to trust, 00:15:18.05\00:15:21.02 we learn to trust the Lord. 00:15:21.05\00:15:22.38 Absolutely. 00:15:22.42\00:15:23.79 Let me, let me, you have been and-- 00:15:23.82\00:15:26.39 but I want to plan it also as when you play, 00:15:26.42\00:15:28.82 you don't just play, you connect to your music. 00:15:28.86\00:15:34.10 I look at musicians as a musician myself as a-- 00:15:34.10\00:15:36.97 I may even use a phrase "we are ministers of music." 00:15:37.03\00:15:38.83 Yes. 00:15:38.87\00:15:40.20 You know, musicians are musicians 00:15:40.24\00:15:41.57 but ministers of music, their skill and their gift 00:15:41.60\00:15:44.67 is in charge of the Holy Spirit and powers it. 00:15:44.71\00:15:48.01 I look at the way you connect to the instrument 00:15:48.04\00:15:50.98 because you are not just connecting to the keyboard 00:15:51.01\00:15:52.68 but you are connecting to the message 00:15:52.71\00:15:54.45 and the person behind the music. 00:15:54.48\00:15:55.98 Well, that's what that is in your life. 00:15:56.02\00:15:57.35 That's an excellent observation and I want to share with you 00:15:57.39\00:15:59.89 that I listen to very, very little piano music. 00:15:59.92\00:16:03.46 I listen to vocal music and I'm desperately 00:16:03.49\00:16:08.90 trying to find words on the notes that I play 00:16:08.93\00:16:12.23 because I'm interested in conveying a message. 00:16:12.27\00:16:15.34 That's right. A message of hope. 00:16:15.37\00:16:17.54 A message of grace. A message of love. 00:16:17.61\00:16:20.98 And that comes through notes and words. 00:16:21.01\00:16:24.68 That's right. 00:16:24.71\00:16:26.05 So I sometimes in the studio, I would take the text 00:16:26.08\00:16:29.75 instead of the notes and look at the text 00:16:29.78\00:16:32.95 "Through It All." 00:16:32.99\00:16:34.32 I've been so many places, you know, "Through it all, 00:16:34.36\00:16:37.56 I've learned to trust in Jesus." 00:16:37.63\00:16:40.60 "My Tribute" "To God be the glory." 00:16:40.63\00:16:42.50 I look at the text and try to convey 00:16:42.53\00:16:44.73 that message of that text through the music, 00:16:44.77\00:16:48.74 through the keys, through the piano. 00:16:48.77\00:16:52.07 When you come to place of appreciation 00:16:52.11\00:16:54.18 lead us into the next song which is "Thank You Lord." 00:16:54.24\00:16:57.41 What motivates you to want to include that 00:16:57.45\00:17:00.25 in your repertoire, 00:17:00.28\00:17:01.62 "Thank You Lord?" 00:17:01.65\00:17:02.98 I was doing an interview not too long ago actually, 00:17:03.02\00:17:05.49 two weeks ago in Loma Linda, California 00:17:05.52\00:17:07.99 and at the end Dr. Ross, the interviewer asked me, 00:17:08.02\00:17:12.43 "What would you like to tell the audience? 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.73 What feelings do you want to share with the audience?" 00:17:14.76\00:17:17.67 And they pointed the camera and I said, "Gratitude." 00:17:17.70\00:17:21.67 I feel very grateful for everything 00:17:21.70\00:17:25.04 that has come my way. 00:17:25.07\00:17:26.78 Even like the songs as for the trials that come my way. 00:17:26.81\00:17:30.15 That's right. Yes, we have trials. 00:17:30.18\00:17:31.51 Only coming to make me strong. Absolutely. 00:17:31.55\00:17:33.55 You know the words of that song. 00:17:33.62\00:17:35.32 It's one of the more popular songs 00:17:35.35\00:17:37.19 that I've been associated with 00:17:37.22\00:17:39.12 and it is a song of gratitude, "Thank You Lord." 00:17:39.15\00:17:44.79 So we are gonna sit back and listen to this 00:17:44.83\00:17:46.83 and what I want to convey to the audience is, 00:17:46.90\00:17:48.96 as you journey and you've been, 00:17:49.00\00:17:50.83 you talked about 1979 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.93 connecting with Heritage Singers, 00:17:52.97\00:17:55.07 your journey from Peru to America, 00:17:55.10\00:17:57.37 going to different schools. 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.81 And what I want to connect 00:17:58.84\00:18:01.54 to this song of the appreciation, 00:18:01.58\00:18:03.48 the gratitude. 00:18:03.51\00:18:06.05 Without gratitude, we cannot appreciate 00:18:06.08\00:18:09.22 what God is doing through us. 00:18:09.25\00:18:11.22 And what the Lord is doing through you is more to me, 00:18:11.25\00:18:14.49 is more-- let me just rephrase, 00:18:14.52\00:18:16.42 what the Lord is doing not only through you 00:18:16.46\00:18:18.13 but to you is a part of the great point of gratitude. 00:18:18.16\00:18:22.40 Because who we are before we begin in our music 00:18:22.43\00:18:24.60 and who we become is always about giving God the glory. 00:18:24.63\00:18:27.87 Wouldn't gratitude be the opposite of entitlement? 00:18:27.90\00:18:31.54 Oh, wonderful. 00:18:31.57\00:18:33.41 So, you know, gratitude is-- it is an acceptance 00:18:33.48\00:18:38.05 that we don't deserve anything. 00:18:38.08\00:18:39.41 That's right. 00:18:39.45\00:18:40.82 We are grateful for what we get. 00:18:40.85\00:18:42.68 So "Thank You Lord" is a song of gratitude. 00:18:42.72\00:18:45.32 Okay. Let's listen to this wonderful song 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.79 speaking of the place 00:18:47.82\00:18:49.16 where we find that what God does through us 00:18:49.19\00:18:51.86 surely is deservant of praise. 00:18:51.89\00:18:53.60 I know right now you're being blessed as you are soaking in, 00:23:15.09\00:23:18.36 saturating in the message through that song. 00:23:18.39\00:23:21.86 When a person ceases to be thankful then, 00:23:21.90\00:23:24.83 as the story in the Bible of the ten lepers 00:23:24.87\00:23:28.50 that were healed, 00:23:28.54\00:23:30.97 the Lord said "Where are the nine?" 00:23:31.01\00:23:32.81 Because only one came back to give God, praising God, 00:23:32.84\00:23:36.11 to give God the gratitude. 00:23:36.14\00:23:37.51 And it's that those intersections of gratitude 00:23:37.55\00:23:39.31 that we find, 00:23:39.35\00:23:40.68 our relationship with God begins to flourish. 00:23:40.72\00:23:43.35 'Cause I believe that when 00:23:43.39\00:23:45.12 we recognize the source of our blessings, 00:23:45.15\00:23:48.26 then God want somebody to testify of His goodness. 00:23:48.29\00:23:51.06 It is the goodness of the Lord 00:23:51.09\00:23:52.53 that leads us to that repentance place. 00:23:52.56\00:23:55.30 Sam, tell us about your recordings? 00:23:55.33\00:23:58.13 You have been recording for, 00:23:58.17\00:24:00.54 you've talked about for numbers of years, 00:24:00.57\00:24:01.90 I don't want to calculate the number of decades 00:24:01.94\00:24:04.87 but I believe, you have numbers of recordings 00:24:04.91\00:24:07.58 that I want our audience to able to access. 00:24:07.61\00:24:10.15 We're gonna give them the address 00:24:10.18\00:24:11.51 at the end of the program. 00:24:11.55\00:24:12.88 But walk us through some of your recordings, I see a nice-- 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.25 Absolutely. You have a nice stack there. 00:24:14.28\00:24:15.62 Yeah. 00:24:15.65\00:24:16.99 These are most of my recordings. 00:24:17.02\00:24:19.15 Yeah. 00:24:19.19\00:24:20.56 I started recording, John, in 1977. 00:24:20.59\00:24:25.93 I was, you know, a teenager 00:24:25.96\00:24:27.96 and I decided to go to the studio 00:24:27.96\00:24:30.83 and I connected with Jeff Wood. 00:24:30.87\00:24:33.60 Yes. 00:24:33.64\00:24:35.00 Who wrote "Side By Side We Stand" and many other songs 00:24:35.04\00:24:37.67 and he and I are friends. 00:24:37.71\00:24:39.04 And I said, Jeff, would you consider? 00:24:39.07\00:24:40.64 So we went to the studio 00:24:40.68\00:24:42.01 and recorded this album called "Gently," 00:24:42.04\00:24:43.81 you know, with some classical numbers and songs 00:24:43.85\00:24:48.45 like "I'm Willing Lord" you've mentioned that song. 00:24:48.48\00:24:51.15 "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus" Turn your eyes, yeah. 00:24:51.19\00:24:52.52 I have decided... Yeah. 00:24:52.55\00:24:54.12 Little Flowers. 00:24:54.16\00:24:56.42 "Say I Do" remember "Say I Do?" Yeah. 00:24:56.46\00:24:58.66 "Have You Did That." "Have You Did That." 00:24:58.69\00:25:00.13 Something-- et cetera. 00:25:00.16\00:25:01.46 So right after that we did, "Thank You Lord" 00:25:01.50\00:25:03.40 we just learnt. 00:25:03.47\00:25:04.80 Right. We just-- 00:25:04.83\00:25:06.17 The song you just played from that. 00:25:06.20\00:25:07.54 Is this one here, "Thank You Lord." 00:25:07.57\00:25:08.97 So yeah, we've done many, many recordings and the latest one 00:25:09.00\00:25:13.48 is a very exciting recording that I had the opportunity 00:25:13.51\00:25:16.34 to do at Capitol Studios in Hollywood. 00:25:16.38\00:25:19.11 Scott Reed, you probably know Scott. 00:25:19.15\00:25:21.35 Yeah, we sang together for quite a few years. 00:25:21.38\00:25:23.12 And sing with him, right? Oh, yeah. 00:25:23.15\00:25:24.65 He and I went to Capitol. 00:25:24.69\00:25:26.02 This is the first vocal album 00:25:26.05\00:25:27.56 that I have produced completely. 00:25:27.59\00:25:30.56 There's a lot of vocals in my piano and orchestra albums 00:25:30.63\00:25:33.80 but this is a completely vocal album excited about. 00:25:33.83\00:25:37.77 It's called "In The Morning" and it has a song 00:25:37.80\00:25:40.40 that I have written the words for in it as well. 00:25:40.44\00:25:43.57 And "Through It All" is on here. 00:25:43.61\00:25:45.11 "Through It All" is on there. 00:25:45.14\00:25:46.47 And my tribute "To God Be the Glory" is on it. 00:25:46.51\00:25:48.61 "Until Then." "Until Then." 00:25:48.64\00:25:50.65 Famous song I just did with the 3ABN's project. 00:25:50.71\00:25:53.78 I'd love to hear it. Yeah. 00:25:53.82\00:25:55.15 And matter of fact, Lari Goss orchestrated it. 00:25:55.18\00:25:59.05 I mourn his passing. 00:25:59.09\00:26:01.62 Lari and I were friends and worked together 00:26:01.66\00:26:04.83 on the very first Steve Darmody album. 00:26:04.86\00:26:07.50 I see your brother Nino there. 00:26:07.56\00:26:08.86 Nino is there and Chuck Berghofer is there with him, 00:26:08.90\00:26:11.33 another bass player who played for Frank Sinatra for 20 years, 00:26:11.37\00:26:15.10 Chuck Berghofer. 00:26:15.14\00:26:16.47 Wow. 00:26:16.50\00:26:17.84 This was a very fun album to record with Al Smith 00:26:17.87\00:26:19.91 who is a 25 Grammy award winner engineer 00:26:19.94\00:26:24.91 and the Diana Krall band people were there. 00:26:24.95\00:26:28.25 Yes. You know, Peter Erskine. 00:26:28.28\00:26:30.09 Oh, it's a very, very fun album to do 00:26:30.12\00:26:31.72 but also we've done some piano only albums like hymns. 00:26:31.75\00:26:34.79 I know. Just only hymns. 00:26:34.82\00:26:36.16 Yes. Et cetera. 00:26:36.19\00:26:38.66 So, yeah, I'm very, very excited 00:26:38.69\00:26:40.70 about this "Homecoming" album was very exciting to do. 00:26:40.73\00:26:44.37 You have some on here, "No One Ever Cared" "What A Friend" 00:26:44.40\00:26:47.54 "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" 00:26:47.60\00:26:48.94 that's a song that's been around a while 00:26:48.97\00:26:50.31 but it hasn't had the visibility, 00:26:50.34\00:26:53.27 I should say the audibility that that it deserves. 00:26:53.34\00:26:56.14 It's one of my favorites. 00:26:56.18\00:26:57.51 I'm glad to know you have that one. 00:26:57.55\00:26:58.88 No One-- "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow." 00:26:58.91\00:27:01.08 "I Know Who Holds Tomorrow" I had played it here earlier. 00:27:01.12\00:27:04.82 And "Homecoming" is, you know, 00:27:04.85\00:27:06.92 paying tribute to the gospel music 00:27:06.99\00:27:09.09 and the music of, you know, 00:27:09.12\00:27:10.69 the Gaithers and the Heritage and songs like, you know... 00:27:10.76\00:27:15.03 "Daystar" "He Touched Me." "What A Precious Friend Is He." 00:27:15.06\00:27:18.80 Oh, yeah, famous Heritage one. The "Lighthouse" is in there. 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.70 That's right. So, yeah, a lot of fun. 00:27:21.74\00:27:24.44 It's, you know, it's amazing when you think of the trans-- 00:27:24.47\00:27:28.14 when you think of the transformation of music, 00:27:28.18\00:27:30.35 you know, let me just tell you, I think back on 00:27:30.38\00:27:32.25 when I first started singing and I just said this to myself. 00:27:32.28\00:27:35.82 Matter of fact, my wife and I kind of giggle about this 00:27:35.85\00:27:38.15 every now and then because I said, 00:27:38.19\00:27:40.66 "The way that I sang when Heritage Singers hired me, 00:27:40.69\00:27:44.23 I would never have hired me." 00:27:44.26\00:27:46.56 And I said, "Which is evidence that God saw in me 00:27:46.59\00:27:51.27 something worth developing." 00:27:51.30\00:27:52.67 And I know you look back at the journey of your playing, 00:27:52.70\00:27:54.84 can you-- do you remember those days? 00:27:54.87\00:27:56.77 Absolutely. Talk about some of those. 00:27:56.81\00:27:59.31 Is the simplicity of it, you know, 00:27:59.34\00:28:01.74 but I'm amazed that the fact that the very first album 00:28:01.78\00:28:04.21 that I showed you earlier people still play 00:28:04.28\00:28:07.25 and they appreciate the simplicity. 00:28:07.28\00:28:08.88 And I'm sure that Max saw that raw talent of yours 00:28:08.92\00:28:14.29 when he hired you as well. 00:28:14.32\00:28:15.66 That's a blessing we've sang it here. 00:28:15.69\00:28:17.06 Absolutely. 00:28:17.09\00:28:18.43 So is the simplicity that I think goes through 00:28:18.46\00:28:22.06 and touches people's hearts. 00:28:22.10\00:28:23.87 And my early albums have a lot of simplicity on them as well 00:28:23.90\00:28:27.67 and I've tried to keep the simplicity. 00:28:27.70\00:28:29.50 My job, John, is to take away notes, 00:28:29.54\00:28:33.01 to take away sounds instead of adding on. 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.41 The more I can take away, the more the ones that stay count. 00:28:35.44\00:28:39.11 Wow. Yeah. 00:28:39.15\00:28:40.52 And I think you mentioned that about Evie, Evie Tornquist. 00:28:40.55\00:28:42.52 So Evie Karlsson now. Yes. 00:28:42.55\00:28:44.82 Yes. Yes. 00:28:44.85\00:28:46.19 The simplicity of her music she was not one 00:28:46.22\00:28:47.69 that added a whole lot of frills 00:28:47.72\00:28:49.06 but-- so the message doesn't get lost. 00:28:49.09\00:28:50.73 Exactly. The ones that stay count. Wow. 00:28:50.76\00:28:53.60 The ones that-- you know, 00:28:53.63\00:28:55.40 that's a musician inside though, 00:28:55.43\00:28:57.67 don't add so much that the message get lost. 00:28:57.70\00:29:00.20 Simplicity allows the beauty of the message to shine through. 00:29:00.27\00:29:04.41 I mean, listen to Miles Davis. That's true. 00:29:04.44\00:29:07.11 You know, how many knows that Miles plays 00:29:07.14\00:29:09.74 but everyone that he plays counts, you know. 00:29:09.78\00:29:12.55 That's true. That's true. 00:29:12.58\00:29:13.95 Same with Ben E. King, same with Nat Cole 00:29:13.98\00:29:16.35 and then with Evie, 00:29:16.38\00:29:17.89 you know, it's just that they've perfected their craft 00:29:17.92\00:29:22.86 to make those simple expressions be powerful. 00:29:22.89\00:29:27.76 And that's where the miracle 00:29:27.83\00:29:29.56 of the transforming message comes through. 00:29:29.60\00:29:32.17 It doesn't have to be squeezed through, 00:29:32.20\00:29:34.60 it comes through unobstructed. 00:29:34.64\00:29:37.11 And to talk to our Adventist audience 00:29:37.14\00:29:39.84 the simplicity of my dear friend 00:29:39.87\00:29:41.41 who just turned 92, Del Delker. 00:29:41.44\00:29:43.65 That's right. 00:29:43.68\00:29:45.01 She taught me several of these songs here. 00:29:45.05\00:29:46.41 Here now, "The Love Of God" 00:29:46.45\00:29:47.88 and "No One Ever Cared for me Like Jesus." 00:29:47.92\00:29:49.82 That's her signature "The Love Of God." 00:29:49.85\00:29:51.19 And the simplicity but the depth, the conviction, 00:29:51.22\00:29:55.69 the passion that she had. 00:29:55.72\00:29:58.86 "It Took A Miracle" walk us into that song. 00:29:58.89\00:30:01.83 I love. 00:30:01.86\00:30:03.26 I compare John W. Peterson who wrote "It Took A Miracle" 00:30:03.33\00:30:08.87 to Irving Berlin in the nonreligious realm. 00:30:08.90\00:30:12.84 Right. 00:30:12.87\00:30:14.24 Because they both wrote simple 00:30:14.28\00:30:15.94 and they both wrote words in music. 00:30:15.98\00:30:18.48 And the words of "It Took A Miracle" are amazing. 00:30:18.51\00:30:21.55 "It took a miracle to put the stars in space. 00:30:21.58\00:30:25.69 It took a miracle to place the world in place." 00:30:25.72\00:30:31.49 Punch line when "But when He saved my soul, 00:30:31.53\00:30:34.36 Cleansed and made me whole, 00:30:34.40\00:30:36.63 It took a miracle of love and grace to make me whole." 00:30:36.70\00:30:39.97 That's right. That's right. 00:30:40.00\00:30:41.34 To me that is just so powerful and I tried to do that 00:30:41.37\00:30:44.04 as much as I can in every concert 00:30:44.07\00:30:46.01 that I can to do that song "It Took A Miracle." 00:30:46.04\00:30:48.98 You know, as a pastor I could see the Lord spoke, He said, 00:30:49.01\00:30:52.11 "He spake, and it was done, he commanded, 00:30:52.15\00:30:53.55 and it stood fast." 00:30:53.58\00:30:54.92 That's His creation but we were 00:30:54.95\00:30:57.55 the development of the skillful patient hand 00:30:57.59\00:31:00.36 of not only a Creator but a re-Creator, a Redeemer, 00:31:00.39\00:31:04.03 the one that molds us to be like Him. 00:31:04.06\00:31:06.16 My favorite text in the Bible has become 1 John 3, 00:31:06.19\00:31:11.20 "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, 00:31:11.23\00:31:14.54 that we should be called the children of God! 00:31:14.57\00:31:17.17 Beloved, now we the children of God, 00:31:17.21\00:31:19.41 and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, 00:31:19.44\00:31:21.48 but we do know that when He is revealed, 00:31:21.51\00:31:23.85 we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is." 00:31:23.91\00:31:26.48 That's the greatest miracle of all that one day 00:31:26.51\00:31:29.08 we could be like Jesus. 00:31:29.12\00:31:30.49 The miracle of love and the miracle of grace. 00:31:30.55\00:31:33.46 Wow. 00:31:33.52\00:31:34.86 The miracle of creation and the miracle of salvation. 00:31:34.89\00:31:38.23 I love it. That's right. 00:31:38.26\00:31:39.76 Sit back and enjoy this beautiful song, 00:31:39.79\00:31:42.70 "It Took A Miracle" and then think about it 00:31:42.73\00:31:45.47 as it's being played 00:31:45.50\00:31:46.87 the miracle that is happening in your life. 00:31:46.90\00:31:49.17 Wow. 00:36:51.97\00:36:53.34 I know you've heard music before 00:36:53.38\00:36:54.71 but you never heard music cooked like that. 00:36:54.74\00:36:57.11 That was a recipe. That was a recipe. 00:36:57.15\00:36:59.78 You know, somebody once asked my wife, 00:36:59.81\00:37:02.22 "Can I have your recipe?" 00:37:02.25\00:37:03.62 She says, "Even if I gave it 00:37:03.65\00:37:05.19 you couldn't make it the way I make it." 00:37:05.22\00:37:07.02 And that's what I want to say about the song. 00:37:07.09\00:37:09.36 We would listen to the notes but the beauty of the music 00:37:09.39\00:37:12.89 that I'm listening today, Sam, is that these are-- 00:37:12.93\00:37:16.53 this is coming from your heart, your hands, your experience. 00:37:16.56\00:37:20.47 What keeps you driven? 00:37:20.54\00:37:22.30 I mean, you have about-- 00:37:22.34\00:37:24.31 I'm looking about 12 recordings here, 00:37:24.34\00:37:26.68 about in front of me I'm estimating. 00:37:26.71\00:37:28.78 What keeps you going? 00:37:28.81\00:37:31.51 What keeps you going as a minister of music? 00:37:31.55\00:37:34.95 Responses like the one you just showed me 00:37:34.98\00:37:39.75 as you were listening. 00:37:39.79\00:37:41.32 You connect with music, John. 00:37:41.36\00:37:43.56 You are a metro musician, a professional musician 00:37:43.63\00:37:47.30 and you listen to the music, you listen to what I'm playing 00:37:47.30\00:37:49.70 and you connect with it 00:37:49.73\00:37:51.73 what better incentive is there to connect, 00:37:51.77\00:37:55.10 to connect the word grace, to connect the word love, 00:37:55.14\00:37:59.01 to connect the word miracle and make that, 00:37:59.04\00:38:04.31 make that effective in the ear, in the heart of the listener. 00:38:04.35\00:38:10.35 So there is no better incentive. 00:38:10.42\00:38:12.25 It's almost like, 00:38:12.29\00:38:13.69 it's almost like getting hooked on something 00:38:13.72\00:38:15.79 is the connection, 00:38:15.82\00:38:18.56 the response that you get from a listening audience. 00:38:18.59\00:38:22.96 In this case audience of one but are very important one. 00:38:23.00\00:38:25.90 You know, last weekend we were in Los Angeles 00:38:25.93\00:38:27.90 playing for 1,800 people at one of the churches there 00:38:27.94\00:38:31.57 with Larnelle Harris. 00:38:31.61\00:38:33.11 Wow. 00:38:33.14\00:38:34.48 And the connection with the people is just, 00:38:34.51\00:38:36.75 is just very, very powerful, very powerful. 00:38:36.78\00:38:40.52 Scott Peck talks about in his book "The Road Less Traveled" 00:38:40.55\00:38:43.92 about the collapse of the ego boundaries 00:38:43.99\00:38:47.56 and the expansion of the ego boundaries. 00:38:47.59\00:38:49.82 I think as performers, as preachers, as musicians, 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.16 as artists, as poets we are able to collapse 00:38:52.19\00:38:56.33 and expand the ego boundaries 00:38:56.36\00:38:57.97 between the producer and the recipient of the art. 00:38:58.00\00:39:02.07 And in our case we have a much higher message 00:39:02.10\00:39:05.04 which is the message of eternity of grace, 00:39:05.07\00:39:07.41 of miracles and of love. 00:39:07.44\00:39:08.78 That's right. 00:39:08.81\00:39:10.15 Wonderfully said because as a pastor of 29 years now, 00:39:10.18\00:39:14.38 married 32 years 00:39:14.42\00:39:15.92 but the music ministry goes further back than that 00:39:15.95\00:39:19.39 and I have seen through the years 00:39:19.42\00:39:21.72 the difference between 00:39:21.76\00:39:23.09 "I want to sing this song right to, 00:39:23.12\00:39:25.09 I want to communicate the song." 00:39:25.13\00:39:27.96 Communication-- Max told me something a number of years ago 00:39:28.00\00:39:30.50 and we share the same affinity there with Heritage Singers 00:39:30.57\00:39:33.07 and so much of who we are 00:39:33.10\00:39:34.50 as wrapped up in our experience with Heritage 00:39:34.54\00:39:36.14 which I will never trade for anything. 00:39:36.17\00:39:37.67 Me either. 00:39:37.71\00:39:39.04 And-- Absolutely true. 00:39:39.07\00:39:40.58 You know, there are so many people whose-- 00:39:40.61\00:39:42.81 I would say to Max and Lucy and I'd say this, 00:39:42.84\00:39:44.38 "They would not know until eternity rolls the impact 00:39:44.41\00:39:48.08 that they have made on the lives of people 00:39:48.12\00:39:49.65 around this globe." 00:39:49.68\00:39:51.02 Every national-- 00:39:51.05\00:39:52.39 good the international music language, 00:39:52.42\00:39:53.96 you've been a part of that. 00:39:53.99\00:39:55.32 Absolutely. Your brother Nino. 00:39:55.36\00:39:56.69 Absolutely. 00:39:56.73\00:39:58.06 I've been a part of that and all the may be 200, 00:39:58.09\00:39:59.83 300 singers. 00:39:59.86\00:40:01.36 I'm so humbled to have been a part of that. 00:40:01.40\00:40:03.63 Yeah. Honored and humbled. 00:40:03.67\00:40:05.00 To be chose not of and I remember I go back to 00:40:05.03\00:40:07.50 when I was chosen now 00:40:07.54\00:40:09.24 because she know Fernando was leaving actually in 1984. 00:40:09.27\00:40:13.84 Quinde. 00:40:13.88\00:40:15.21 Fernando Quinde was leaving in 1984 00:40:15.24\00:40:16.58 and Heritage came to Florida 00:40:16.61\00:40:18.85 and I had a concert that very night 00:40:18.88\00:40:20.62 but my mother-in-law brought tickets 00:40:20.68\00:40:22.05 to the Heritage concert and I said, 00:40:22.08\00:40:23.55 "I can't go." She said, "You have to go." 00:40:23.59\00:40:25.19 Said, "But I can't. I'm 75 miles away." 00:40:25.22\00:40:26.96 She said, "At least come for that second half." 00:40:27.02\00:40:30.09 And, you know, not to disappoint 00:40:30.13\00:40:31.73 but I think it was more than my mother-in-laws drive. 00:40:31.76\00:40:35.40 The Lord said, "Tonight is your destiny. 00:40:35.43\00:40:37.93 They are waiting for you." That is amazing. 00:40:37.97\00:40:39.80 I did not know that story. 00:40:39.83\00:40:41.17 And I auditioned that night and when, 00:40:41.20\00:40:42.54 seven months later 00:40:42.57\00:40:43.94 when they were done for that year 00:40:43.97\00:40:45.31 Greg Mace remembered, 00:40:45.34\00:40:46.68 "What about that guy in Florida?" 00:40:46.71\00:40:48.04 Wow. 00:40:48.08\00:40:49.41 And that's how my journey, 00:40:49.44\00:40:50.78 my wife's journey with Heritage began. 00:40:50.81\00:40:52.15 I did not know that story. 00:40:52.18\00:40:53.52 And we were in the same pools at times through the years, 00:40:53.55\00:40:54.88 you know, when we did the bigger programs 00:40:54.92\00:40:56.25 like the reunions and things you were there and Nino. 00:40:56.28\00:40:58.99 Absolutely. 00:40:59.02\00:41:00.46 Nino and I traveled together too but, 00:41:00.49\00:41:02.96 but the beauty of our message, 00:41:02.99\00:41:05.29 there is a culmination to the gospel 00:41:05.33\00:41:06.80 and we are gonna, we are gonna 00:41:06.83\00:41:08.46 segue out of this portion 00:41:08.50\00:41:10.43 just before our newsbreak into that song 00:41:10.47\00:41:11.97 that I'm just looking forward to hearing as I know, it's-- 00:41:12.00\00:41:14.37 I know what it can do. 00:41:14.40\00:41:15.84 But before I give the address information 00:41:15.87\00:41:18.77 to our audience here, 00:41:18.81\00:41:20.14 those who are listening by radio 00:41:20.18\00:41:21.51 and those who are watching by television 00:41:21.54\00:41:23.91 we want to make this music available 00:41:23.95\00:41:26.08 as purely as we possibly can 00:41:26.11\00:41:28.42 because every musician is as unique as their DNA. 00:41:28.45\00:41:33.32 What do you hope to communicate, 00:41:33.36\00:41:35.46 if you were to give a message 00:41:35.49\00:41:36.83 to those listening and watching this program, 00:41:36.89\00:41:38.49 how will you motivate them? 00:41:38.53\00:41:40.40 What would you say to them to motivate them 00:41:40.46\00:41:42.06 entrusting their lives to the Lord? 00:41:42.10\00:41:46.40 I think it's the honesty. The honesty of the message. 00:41:46.43\00:41:50.24 Listen to your heart, 00:41:50.27\00:41:51.61 listen to the honesty of the message 00:41:51.64\00:41:53.91 and it's easy, it's apparent, it's obvious. 00:41:53.94\00:41:59.18 That's right. Okay. 00:43:39.18\00:43:40.78 So tell us how this song has affected your life, 00:43:40.82\00:43:44.15 this song because I know, 00:43:44.19\00:43:45.59 I'm learning even more indelibly as I have, 00:43:45.62\00:43:48.49 we never had a close one to one time like this before 00:43:48.52\00:43:51.09 but I'm learning more indelibly that this is not music 00:43:51.13\00:43:53.23 that you just like to convey 00:43:53.26\00:43:54.56 because there are songs that are familiar 00:43:54.60\00:43:55.96 but they have done something to you. 00:43:56.00\00:43:57.33 Absolutely. Tell me about "Rise Again." 00:43:57.40\00:43:59.03 Well, the message of "Rise Again" is very simple. 00:43:59.07\00:44:02.97 Wayne Hooper wrote 60 years ago "We Have This Hope." 00:44:03.00\00:44:08.01 That's right. 00:44:08.04\00:44:09.38 "Rise Again" is the song of hope. 00:44:09.41\00:44:11.91 It talks about the go ahead, nail the nails in My hand, 00:44:11.95\00:44:16.35 laugh at me et cetera. 00:44:16.38\00:44:19.02 But then it says but I'll rise again. 00:44:19.05\00:44:21.82 There's a but, you know, like the other one 00:44:21.86\00:44:23.93 "But until then my heart will go on singing." 00:44:23.96\00:44:25.99 This one but I'll rise again. 00:44:26.03\00:44:28.10 And then climatically goes into 00:44:28.13\00:44:30.47 not only I'll rise again but I'll come again. 00:44:30.53\00:44:32.77 That's right. 00:44:32.80\00:44:34.14 So, you know, it's a song of hope 00:44:34.20\00:44:36.10 if we can summarize it with one word. 00:44:36.14\00:44:39.47 Rise again, there's a-- when we travel as you do, 00:44:39.51\00:44:44.55 you touch different continents 00:44:44.58\00:44:45.91 with your music and with your life 00:44:45.95\00:44:47.62 and when we do that, we begin to recognize 00:44:47.65\00:44:50.19 the diversities of religions around the world 00:44:50.25\00:44:52.39 but I see what's so beautiful about Christianity 00:44:52.42\00:44:54.06 is there's no place that we can go 00:44:54.12\00:44:56.39 to memorialize our leader 00:44:56.42\00:44:59.09 who still locked in those behind that stone. 00:44:59.13\00:45:02.60 The stone's been rolled away and truly because of His grace 00:45:02.63\00:45:05.73 He rose again. 00:45:05.77\00:45:07.14 Absolutely. 00:45:07.17\00:45:08.50 But I want our audience to listen to this song. 00:45:08.54\00:45:11.11 You may have heard it before 00:45:11.14\00:45:12.71 but I want you to listen to the words 00:45:12.74\00:45:14.64 as they are communicated through the music 00:45:14.68\00:45:17.91 because sometimes we hear the lyrics 00:45:17.95\00:45:20.02 but I want you to not only hear the lyrics 00:45:20.05\00:45:22.98 that are not going to be sung 00:45:23.02\00:45:24.82 but hear the lyrics as they unfold, 00:45:24.85\00:45:26.96 as the Lord allows them to flow off with the fingertips 00:45:26.99\00:45:29.96 of his servant Sam Ocampo. 00:45:30.03\00:45:32.03 He is not only, He has not only risen again 00:45:32.06\00:45:35.10 but He is coming again. 00:45:35.13\00:45:36.93 Enjoy this song, "Rise Again." 00:45:36.97\00:45:39.47
