00:03:19.16\00:03:21.66 and this remarkable opportunity 00:03:21.70\00:03:23.57 for sharing the gospel with the world. 00:03:23.60\00:03:25.20 Oh, wonderful. 00:03:25.23\00:03:26.57 Well and, Andrew, how long have you been working on this? 00:03:26.60\00:03:29.84 Oh, boy. 00:03:29.87\00:03:31.21 God gave me the idea for IntelliPaper 00:03:31.24\00:03:32.94 in January of 2008. 00:03:32.97\00:03:34.74 In 2008. 00:03:34.78\00:03:36.11 And we're gonna get to hear the whole miracle story 00:03:36.14\00:03:40.12 behind this incredible product and what the potential, 00:03:40.15\00:03:45.39 it's a mind blowing potential. 00:03:45.42\00:03:47.56 Truly, it is. 00:03:47.59\00:03:48.92 But before we jump into this story 00:03:48.96\00:03:51.06 and get to know these two gentlemen better, 00:03:51.09\00:03:53.29 we're going to have a beautiful song, 00:03:53.33\00:03:56.73 a beautiful song that is going to be done by pianist, 00:03:56.77\00:04:00.47 Johan Sentana. 00:04:00.50\00:04:02.10 And he is going to play "Be thou my vision." 00:04:02.14\00:04:05.04 Beautiful, I love his simple style on the piano. 00:07:09.02\00:07:12.29 It's just very, very gracious. 00:07:12.33\00:07:15.70 Well, if you're just joining us, 00:07:15.73\00:07:17.07 today our special guests are Andrew DePaula 00:07:17.10\00:07:19.77 and Scott Sessone. 00:07:19.80\00:07:21.44 And I had the great pleasure 00:07:21.47\00:07:23.61 of getting to know these two gentlemen yesterday. 00:07:23.64\00:07:25.67 We spend a good deal of time in meetings 00:07:25.71\00:07:28.71 and I think you're gonna love them 00:07:28.74\00:07:30.68 as your brothers in Christ just as I do. 00:07:30.71\00:07:33.15 So before we jump into the remarkable gift 00:07:33.18\00:07:38.15 that God has put in your hand, this remarkable tool. 00:07:38.19\00:07:42.06 Let's get to know you a little bit better. 00:07:42.09\00:07:44.09 Why don't you share 00:07:44.13\00:07:45.46 a little of your background, Andrew. 00:07:45.49\00:07:47.90 Alright, Shelley, so I was born in the US, 00:07:47.93\00:07:51.93 but, you know, that's all I can really claim. 00:07:51.97\00:07:55.67 I grew up in West Africa. 00:07:55.70\00:07:57.61 My parents were missionaries and so I spent 00:07:57.64\00:08:00.74 the first 18 years of my life overseas, between, 00:08:00.78\00:08:04.71 you know, the years in Africa which were about 12, 00:08:04.75\00:08:07.92 little bit of academy in South America 00:08:07.95\00:08:11.05 and then I spent a little bit of time in Europe 00:08:11.09\00:08:12.85 before coming back to the States for college. 00:08:12.89\00:08:16.76 And, you know, it's interesting, 00:08:16.79\00:08:18.89 people talk about missionary experience 00:08:18.93\00:08:21.63 and they're like, "Oh, what was that like," 00:08:21.66\00:08:23.00 and I would never trade that for anything. 00:08:23.03\00:08:25.50 Did you develop a personal relationship 00:08:25.53\00:08:29.00 during this time, or was it-- 00:08:29.04\00:08:31.61 I mean, with Jesus. 00:08:31.64\00:08:32.97 Was your relationship, 00:08:33.01\00:08:34.34 at what age did it really become personal 00:08:34.38\00:08:36.04 and not just something 00:08:36.08\00:08:37.41 being handed down by your parents? 00:08:37.45\00:08:38.98 You know, I had sort of three steps in that process 00:08:39.01\00:08:43.18 that I can look back at, specifically. 00:08:43.22\00:08:45.49 The first one was when I realized 00:08:45.52\00:08:47.82 for the first time at the age of 11 00:08:47.86\00:08:49.46 that God was real. 00:08:49.49\00:08:50.83 Okay. 00:08:50.86\00:08:52.19 And that was a miracle, 00:08:52.23\00:08:53.56 if you don't mind I'll share just briefly. 00:08:53.60\00:08:54.93 Sure. 00:08:54.96\00:08:56.46 I had a temper. 00:08:56.50\00:08:57.87 I was the oldest of three siblings 00:08:57.90\00:09:00.17 and I was a bit of a bully. 00:09:00.20\00:09:01.74 I'm sad to say. 00:09:01.77\00:09:03.94 And so, you know, it wasn't anything too serious, 00:09:03.97\00:09:06.04 but, you know, my brother and sister 00:09:06.07\00:09:08.01 would get on my nerves and I'd whack them 00:09:08.04\00:09:09.84 or you know do something not nice. 00:09:09.88\00:09:12.55 And my mom you know was trying to get me to stop this 00:09:12.58\00:09:15.15 and she kept telling me, "You know, Andrew, 00:09:15.18\00:09:17.35 you can't change your own heart, 00:09:17.39\00:09:18.79 God is the one that's got to do that." 00:09:18.82\00:09:20.16 Amen. 00:09:20.19\00:09:21.52 And she's like, you know, and I'd be sorry, 00:09:21.56\00:09:26.26 you know, I'd meet my mom at the door, 00:09:26.29\00:09:27.63 I was like, alright spank me, I was bad. 00:09:27.66\00:09:31.00 You were quite different than I was. 00:09:31.03\00:09:32.53 You know, you can't help yourself. 00:09:33.57\00:09:34.97 You can't help yourself 00:09:35.00\00:09:36.34 when you're trying to do things on your own. 00:09:36.37\00:09:38.21 And my mom would tell me, it's like, 00:09:38.24\00:09:40.58 "Son, you can't, you can't do this on your own. 00:09:40.61\00:09:43.85 You got to ask Jesus for help." 00:09:43.88\00:09:45.21 Its like, "When those feeling start to come 00:09:45.25\00:09:46.75 send up a prayer." 00:09:46.78\00:09:48.25 So one day I remember, I actually remember 00:09:48.28\00:09:50.35 exactly where I was in the house and my sister, 00:09:50.39\00:09:53.76 I think it was, had done something 00:09:53.79\00:09:55.62 and I'm getting ready to haul off and, 00:09:55.66\00:09:57.26 you know, clobber her and then my mom's words, 00:09:57.29\00:10:00.46 you know, go back through my head and, 00:10:00.50\00:10:01.83 so I sent up a prayer, 00:10:01.86\00:10:03.70 you know, like Nehemiah in that instant. 00:10:03.73\00:10:06.67 And it's incredible, all of a sudden it was gone. 00:10:06.70\00:10:10.74 That just, you know, that irritableness 00:10:10.77\00:10:12.57 that wells up inside of you was just, it was gone. 00:10:12.61\00:10:15.64 Just like, gone. 00:10:15.68\00:10:17.71 I had to sit down and I realized in that instant 00:10:17.75\00:10:21.32 that God was real. 00:10:21.35\00:10:23.02 Praise the Lord. 00:10:23.05\00:10:24.39 And that, you know, all of this stuff 00:10:24.42\00:10:25.79 that I believed, but it was only because of my parents 00:10:25.82\00:10:28.32 and my upbringing was actually real. 00:10:28.36\00:10:31.23 So fast forward to academy and I, 00:10:31.26\00:10:37.40 you know, moved away from home, went to a boarding school, 00:10:37.43\00:10:39.97 in one of our Adventist boarding schools 00:10:40.00\00:10:41.60 in South America, in Brazil, 00:10:41.64\00:10:43.94 and, you know, I'm uprooted from my family. 00:10:43.97\00:10:46.44 I'd never been away from home before 00:10:46.47\00:10:48.64 and so I took this step and choose 00:10:48.68\00:10:51.58 to transfer my anchor from my family to my church. 00:10:51.61\00:10:55.82 So I studied and I became a baptized member 00:10:55.85\00:10:59.22 at the age of 14. 00:10:59.25\00:11:00.59 But, you know, you're young, you have friends, 00:11:00.62\00:11:01.99 you have life, it's exciting 00:11:02.02\00:11:03.39 and all this different things happen 00:11:03.43\00:11:04.76 and so you kind of coast along and then I guess, 00:11:04.79\00:11:07.76 you know, what I date my present experience 00:11:07.80\00:11:09.86 from as an experience 00:11:09.90\00:11:11.23 I had between my first and second year in college. 00:11:11.27\00:11:13.64 I had a summer camp in Arizona, 00:11:13.67\00:11:15.14 where I was just telling Scott about this, 00:11:15.17\00:11:19.37 the whole structure camp was geared to help these, 00:11:19.41\00:11:23.58 you know, young campers experience God 00:11:23.61\00:11:27.08 and make a decision for him. 00:11:27.12\00:11:28.55 Now I was a councilor at this camp, you know. 00:11:28.58\00:11:30.42 Helping with the staff and stuff. 00:11:30.45\00:11:32.45 That summer, in addition to reading 00:11:32.49\00:11:34.19 "Desire of ages" for our morning devotionals, 00:11:34.22\00:11:36.06 I was involved in the summer camp 00:11:36.09\00:11:37.99 and I saw God changing kids left and right. 00:11:38.03\00:11:40.66 And just observing that happening changed me. 00:11:40.70\00:11:43.93 And, you know, coming back from that experience, 00:11:43.97\00:11:46.10 back to Walla Walla for my second year, 00:11:46.13\00:11:48.44 I decided, you know, I gotta get serious 00:11:48.47\00:11:50.11 about my Christian experience and my relationship with God. 00:11:50.14\00:11:54.51 So did you ever consider being pastor 00:11:54.54\00:11:56.41 or did you feel like you were called in any of that way? 00:11:56.44\00:11:58.98 You know, that was my quandary. 00:11:59.01\00:12:00.35 I mean, I came back, 00:12:00.38\00:12:01.72 you know, wanting to do something for God, 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.08 you know, on fire for him, 00:12:03.12\00:12:04.69 but I never felt like my talents were in, 00:12:04.72\00:12:07.96 you know, what we often call the sacred professions, 00:12:07.99\00:12:10.93 you know, preaching, teaching, nursing, doctor, 00:12:10.96\00:12:14.23 you know, those kinds of things. 00:12:14.26\00:12:16.67 And I wrestled with this, 00:12:16.70\00:12:18.03 I remember distinctly, for months. 00:12:18.07\00:12:20.24 And finally I just threw up my hands and said, 00:12:20.27\00:12:22.54 well, you know, I guess 00:12:22.57\00:12:23.91 I'll just be the best engineer I can be, 00:12:23.94\00:12:25.87 'cause that's what I, you know, I was training to be. 00:12:25.91\00:12:28.68 And serve God, you know, as a lay person and in, 00:12:28.71\00:12:32.58 you know, whatever support capacity I can, 00:12:32.61\00:12:35.42 'cause I'm not cut out to be any of those other things 00:12:35.45\00:12:37.85 that, you know, we so stereo typically associate with, 00:12:37.89\00:12:40.82 with evangelism and outreach and what not. 00:12:40.86\00:12:43.59 But God had very different ideas. 00:12:43.63\00:12:45.83 Boy, he did, indeed. 00:12:45.86\00:12:47.20 So he took your training 00:12:47.23\00:12:48.70 and we'll come back in just a second 00:12:48.73\00:12:51.13 to see how God kind of redirected him 00:12:51.17\00:12:54.37 into the area of technology and what he's done with that. 00:12:54.40\00:12:58.27 Scott, tell us just a little bit about you. 00:12:58.31\00:13:01.48 Thanks, Shelley. 00:13:01.51\00:13:02.84 And I'd like to add in the context 00:13:02.88\00:13:04.21 of what I've just learnt about my colleague here. 00:13:04.25\00:13:06.51 We been working side by side for almost a year now 00:13:06.55\00:13:09.42 and these are some fresh insights into the life 00:13:09.45\00:13:12.15 and character of a guy that I've come to know 00:13:12.19\00:13:14.82 and respect here. 00:13:14.86\00:13:16.26 How old were you when you had that little epiphany, 00:13:16.29\00:13:18.23 with regard to your relationship to Jesus 00:13:18.26\00:13:19.89 before academy? 00:13:19.93\00:13:21.26 Eleven. 00:13:21.30\00:13:22.63 Eleven, so praise the Lord, right? 00:13:22.66\00:13:25.10 That there is a gospel, there is a Savior, 00:13:25.13\00:13:26.87 there is a God out there that can reach even-- 00:13:26.90\00:13:29.20 An 11-year-old. Amen. Eleven-year-olds. 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.01 I come to you from beautiful South Lancaster, 00:13:31.04\00:13:32.87 Massachusetts, where I'm happy to report 00:13:32.91\00:13:35.81 that Christian education is alive and well. 00:13:35.84\00:13:37.81 Yes. 00:13:37.85\00:13:39.18 My wife is an educator over Browning Academy. 00:13:39.21\00:13:42.35 We began a Building for Eternity campaign 00:13:42.38\00:13:45.05 for South Lancaster Academy out there. 00:13:45.09\00:13:47.39 And much of our lives have revolved around 00:13:47.42\00:13:50.43 helping young people, right? 00:13:50.46\00:13:52.13 Develop that relationship with Jesus, 00:13:52.16\00:13:54.26 knowing him personally. 00:13:54.30\00:13:55.90 Like Andrew had there, 00:13:55.93\00:13:57.90 leading up to his experience in the academy. 00:13:57.93\00:14:00.67 I was raised in another God-fearing family, 00:14:00.70\00:14:03.24 not of this denomination. 00:14:03.27\00:14:05.04 Where my mama taught me early on to have respect for God 00:14:05.07\00:14:09.01 and that seed was watered year over year over year 00:14:09.04\00:14:11.38 until the Lord brought somebody right across 00:14:11.41\00:14:13.58 the path of my life at a hallway at work. 00:14:13.62\00:14:16.48 Who simply asked, "How are you doing, Scott?" 00:14:16.52\00:14:18.85 I wasn't doing well at that time, 00:14:18.89\00:14:20.46 but I gave him the pat answer, "I'm doing fine." 00:14:20.49\00:14:23.39 And he grabbed me by the shoulders and said, 00:14:23.43\00:14:24.76 "Scott, you don't look like you're doing fine. 00:14:24.79\00:14:26.39 How are you doing?" 00:14:26.43\00:14:28.00 And that Christian fellow, Paul Smith, 00:14:28.03\00:14:30.17 and his God-fearing wife Dolore were my first step back 00:14:30.20\00:14:34.14 to the rest of my life here as a member 00:14:34.17\00:14:36.84 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:14:36.87\00:14:38.31 Praise God. Yes. 00:14:38.34\00:14:39.67 Now you also, you got an engineering degree from MIT? 00:14:39.71\00:14:43.28 I did my post-graduate work there 00:14:43.31\00:14:44.78 and that's the hallway where Paul Smith grabbed me 00:14:44.81\00:14:48.35 and, you know, in the middle of an academic institution 00:14:48.38\00:14:51.49 that excels in, I'll say intellectual pursuits. 00:14:51.52\00:14:54.62 God has a bastion of Christianity there with, 00:14:54.66\00:14:57.79 I'll say, the complete intellectual pursuit 00:14:57.83\00:15:00.36 that extents to the spiritual, right? 00:15:00.40\00:15:02.76 It'll combine what we know 00:15:02.80\00:15:04.13 and do here in this world with the spiritual. 00:15:04.17\00:15:06.37 Absolutely. Absolutely. And the world to come. 00:15:06.40\00:15:08.90 Well, now let's talk about IntelliPaper. 00:15:08.94\00:15:13.58 Let's talk about the direction God took you in technology 00:15:13.61\00:15:18.31 so that you could found IntelliPaper. 00:15:18.35\00:15:20.52 So I graduated from Wall Walla 00:15:20.55\00:15:22.78 with an electrical engineering degree, 00:15:22.82\00:15:24.35 you know, I met my wife there, I mean you can call it 00:15:24.39\00:15:26.05 Western Wedding College after all. 00:15:26.09\00:15:29.32 Along with a few other nice things 00:15:29.36\00:15:30.86 and I mean, it was a great school. 00:15:30.89\00:15:32.39 I loved my experience there, but, 00:15:32.43\00:15:34.30 you know, I'm a circuit board, circuit designer. 00:15:34.33\00:15:37.30 Digital electronics was, you know, 00:15:37.33\00:15:38.87 what I was in love with and I worked a couple of years 00:15:38.90\00:15:42.80 right out of school in the field 00:15:42.84\00:15:44.17 and I used to tell my wife that I go to work to play. 00:15:44.21\00:15:47.14 'Cause I love doing that. And so moved to Portland. 00:15:47.18\00:15:53.28 Ended up working at our Adventist hospital there 00:15:53.31\00:15:55.85 doing some information technology related stuff 00:15:55.88\00:15:58.82 which, you know, when you have an engineering degree, 00:15:58.85\00:16:02.66 you get a lot of background and training 00:16:02.69\00:16:05.06 in a lot of different supporting areas 00:16:05.09\00:16:07.26 and so I'd picked up a lot of that stuff 00:16:07.30\00:16:09.03 and so I was able to work there. 00:16:09.06\00:16:11.53 I feel like God was still, had me in school, 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.57 'cause, you know, later on, a lot of these skills 00:16:14.60\00:16:16.67 would really come to be useful, 00:16:16.71\00:16:18.74 but I learned all about telephony, 00:16:18.77\00:16:20.68 learned all about networking, learned all about Unix server 00:16:20.71\00:16:25.28 and system administration. 00:16:25.31\00:16:27.55 And then, through an incredibly 00:16:27.58\00:16:28.98 providential set of circumstances, 00:16:29.02\00:16:30.82 God called me 00:16:30.85\00:16:32.19 to the Upper Columbia Conference 00:16:32.22\00:16:34.02 where I was privileged to work with bibleinfo.com 00:16:34.06\00:16:36.86 Now that was not an easy decision, 00:16:36.89\00:16:38.89 because, you know, here I am making good money. 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.16 Yes. 00:16:41.20\00:16:42.53 In a, you know, a profession that, 00:16:42.56\00:16:45.73 you know, pays reasonably well 00:16:45.77\00:16:48.04 and so I ended up taking probably a 50 percent pay cut. 00:16:48.07\00:16:51.94 But, you know, we don't have time 00:16:51.97\00:16:54.68 for the whole story of that part of it here, 00:16:54.71\00:16:56.54 but God closed a whole bunch of doors 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.88 and gave me the boot. 00:16:58.91\00:17:01.22 Encouragement 00:17:01.25\00:17:02.58 Encouragement to get over to that job 00:17:02.62\00:17:05.05 that he wanted me to get there and through the first-- 00:17:05.09\00:17:08.86 Now tell us bibleinfo.com the one that was? 00:17:08.89\00:17:12.29 Yeah, so bibleinfo.com is a website ministry, 00:17:12.33\00:17:15.40 still exists today. 00:17:15.43\00:17:16.77 You can go there. 00:17:16.80\00:17:18.13 At the time, 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.50 it was one of the premier Adventist websites 00:17:19.53\00:17:21.24 where you could get Bible information. 00:17:21.27\00:17:23.51 Topical Bible studies. 00:17:23.54\00:17:24.87 Topical, yeah, so, what does the Bible have to say about. 00:17:24.91\00:17:27.88 Death. Anything. 00:17:27.91\00:17:29.71 And there would be a short collection of verses, 00:17:29.74\00:17:31.91 little bit of glue text in between. 00:17:31.95\00:17:33.82 Not only that, but they had a team of volunteers 00:17:33.85\00:17:36.22 that answered Bible question and prayer request. 00:17:36.25\00:17:38.52 It was a really, really powerful ministry. 00:17:38.55\00:17:41.69 And so they needed, I mean they'd grown, 00:17:41.72\00:17:44.03 you know, it came out of an idea for an 800 number. 00:17:44.06\00:17:48.10 You know, Bible information line they use to call it, 00:17:48.13\00:17:50.87 that was a response to, I think, 00:17:50.90\00:17:53.57 the Waco incident in Texas and some of the bad press 00:17:53.60\00:17:56.54 that Adventist were getting at the time. 00:17:56.57\00:17:58.64 And, you know, this had grown little by little 00:17:58.67\00:18:00.71 and by the year 2000, 00:18:00.74\00:18:02.81 which is when I was called to work there. 00:18:02.84\00:18:06.75 They had grown to the point where they couldn't outsource 00:18:06.78\00:18:09.28 their technology anymore and they needed someone 00:18:09.32\00:18:11.59 to really come and, you know, help the ministry grow 00:18:11.62\00:18:14.79 by laying a good, solid, technical foundation. 00:18:14.82\00:18:17.56 And so that was the call that God gave me 00:18:17.59\00:18:20.46 and it made it very clear 00:18:20.50\00:18:21.83 that that's where he wanted me to go. 00:18:21.86\00:18:24.40 To the point of even picking the house 00:18:24.43\00:18:26.03 that we live in for us and number of other things. 00:18:26.07\00:18:29.67 So at bibleinfo I began, 00:18:29.70\00:18:31.71 of course, to do the work assigned to me 00:18:31.74\00:18:33.71 and I don't think that it was more than a year, 00:18:33.74\00:18:36.04 I feel in love with using technology in ministry. 00:18:36.08\00:18:39.35 Yes. 00:18:39.38\00:18:40.72 I mean, here was a place where I could exercise 00:18:40.75\00:18:43.35 my talents, my skills, that I felt 00:18:43.39\00:18:46.55 that I was blessed with by God, 00:18:46.59\00:18:49.66 in a way that directly affected the salvation of people. 00:18:49.69\00:18:52.46 I mean, I would see it everyday, 00:18:52.49\00:18:53.83 you know, I'd write code and it would go out 00:18:53.86\00:18:55.70 on the internet and do something 00:18:55.73\00:18:57.17 and then here would be someone 00:18:57.20\00:18:58.53 that would make the decision for Christ as a result of, 00:18:58.57\00:19:01.44 you know, at least facilitated by, 00:19:01.47\00:19:03.27 I mean the Holy Spirit does the work. 00:19:03.30\00:19:04.74 But facilitated by this code that I've written 00:19:04.77\00:19:07.71 or these servers that I've put together, 00:19:07.74\00:19:09.38 or, you know, a whole host of stuff like that 00:19:09.41\00:19:11.61 and that just-- 00:19:11.65\00:19:12.98 So you found out that you were in a sacred profession. 00:19:13.01\00:19:14.42 I was. I was at a sacred profession after all. 00:19:14.45\00:19:17.39 You know, as an engineer. 00:19:17.42\00:19:19.32 And so, you know, fast forward a couple more years 00:19:19.35\00:19:24.03 and one day God gave me, I was leafing through a catalog 00:19:24.06\00:19:27.93 and I saw these, you know, CD, recordable CDs, 00:19:27.96\00:19:33.00 you know, they have the round ones 00:19:33.03\00:19:34.37 and whatever, that's normal, but then 00:19:34.40\00:19:36.00 there were these square ones, I'm like oh, that's cool. 00:19:36.04\00:19:38.11 So I ordered a few just for fun and ended up 00:19:38.14\00:19:40.84 putting the entire website on these CDs 00:19:40.88\00:19:43.78 and we ended up with a little business card 00:19:43.81\00:19:45.88 that you could hold in your hand and give away 00:19:45.91\00:19:50.49 but it had the whole website on it in all the languages, 00:19:50.52\00:19:54.02 and including six languages of the Bible. 00:19:54.06\00:19:58.76 And it was a hit, it was an instant hit. 00:19:58.79\00:20:02.46 We decided, you know, this is a great sharing tool and so. 00:20:02.50\00:20:06.30 I think we've got a picture of that, 00:20:06.33\00:20:07.67 I just want the people to see, there it is. 00:20:07.70\00:20:09.04 Absolutely. How tiny that was. 00:20:09.07\00:20:10.41 So, you know, these square CDs, 00:20:10.44\00:20:11.94 you know, you could fit them I your pocket, 00:20:11.97\00:20:13.58 but you can, you know, they would fit in a tray, 00:20:13.61\00:20:16.34 right in the computer and then you could read 00:20:16.38\00:20:19.11 the whole content of the website. 00:20:19.15\00:20:20.48 They were kind of conversational, 00:20:20.52\00:20:22.88 conversation builders as well, 00:20:22.92\00:20:25.09 because they were tiny and unique. 00:20:25.12\00:20:26.45 They had a pizzazz, a draw that was not, 00:20:26.49\00:20:32.53 it was more than just the fact that it was a CD. 00:20:32.56\00:20:34.53 I could give these things away, back in the day, to anybody. 00:20:34.56\00:20:38.30 I mean, I'd have them in my pocket 00:20:38.33\00:20:39.97 and then I'd sit next to someone in the plane, 00:20:40.00\00:20:42.60 or at the grocery store, I'd make conversation 00:20:42.64\00:20:44.84 and people would take these 00:20:44.87\00:20:46.21 that would probably have never taken a GLOW tract 00:20:46.24\00:20:48.78 or a brochure something like that, 00:20:48.81\00:20:50.48 'cause there's, you know, a lot of barriers 00:20:50.51\00:20:52.08 that people build or have around them, 00:20:52.11\00:20:54.02 about sharing tools. 00:20:54.05\00:20:56.18 So we decided that we were gonna make this available 00:20:56.22\00:20:59.05 to the membership and so we put together a program 00:20:59.09\00:21:01.92 and little bit of marketing effort 00:21:01.96\00:21:03.63 and we were giving these, making these available 00:21:03.66\00:21:06.43 for a dollar a piece to members 00:21:06.46\00:21:09.13 and they were going like hot cakes. 00:21:09.16\00:21:10.77 And I remember ordering them, 00:21:10.80\00:21:12.27 you know, 20-30 thousand at a time 00:21:12.30\00:21:15.17 and, you know, two months later we'd do it again. 00:21:15.20\00:21:18.87 And one day I called up 00:21:18.91\00:21:20.74 to order the next 20-30 thousand 00:21:20.78\00:21:23.65 and the manufacture in Hong Kong said, 00:21:23.68\00:21:25.41 you know, "I'm really sorry, 00:21:25.45\00:21:26.78 but we can't make these anymore." 00:21:26.82\00:21:28.98 And they told me a story that I couldn't believe, 00:21:29.02\00:21:31.22 it was a squabble between two companies 00:21:31.25\00:21:33.72 that claimed to own the patent on the square CD 00:21:33.76\00:21:36.56 and so they had to shut down manufacturing 00:21:36.59\00:21:38.59 while they sorted out this fight, 00:21:38.63\00:21:40.50 while technology moves on and I never heard 00:21:40.53\00:21:43.77 what happened, but, you know, CD trays went away, 00:21:43.80\00:21:46.80 I mean, now you're hard put to find a CD drive 00:21:46.84\00:21:48.70 in a computer anymore and I was disgusted. 00:21:48.74\00:21:51.34 I was just totally disgusted, because I felt 00:21:51.37\00:21:53.27 like the devil had pulled the rug out from under us. 00:21:53.31\00:21:56.21 And just when we had something 00:21:56.24\00:21:57.91 that was really gonna work well, it was all shut down. 00:21:57.95\00:22:02.75 Yes. 00:22:02.78\00:22:04.25 What you didn't know is God's really giving you a boot. 00:22:04.29\00:22:06.62 And we know that God does some of his best creative work 00:22:08.02\00:22:10.76 out of nothing. 00:22:10.79\00:22:12.26 And now Andrew and his ministry 00:22:12.29\00:22:13.63 basically didn't have the medium. 00:22:13.66\00:22:15.36 They had nothing with which, 00:22:15.40\00:22:16.87 to help equip the folks to share the gospel. 00:22:16.90\00:22:19.27 And out of that nothing came an idea. 00:22:19.30\00:22:21.07 Yeah. So fast forward four years. 00:22:21.10\00:22:23.81 All this time this has been bugging me. 00:22:23.84\00:22:26.88 Four years, it's been bugging me. 00:22:26.91\00:22:28.91 So I like new technology. 00:22:28.94\00:22:31.48 I like keeping up on the latest and greatest things 00:22:31.51\00:22:33.58 and one of the places I've had the privilege 00:22:33.62\00:22:35.22 of going a few times is CES, Consumer Electronic Show. 00:22:35.25\00:22:39.79 It's in January every year and it's this huge convention 00:22:39.82\00:22:43.63 where you can see anything that has to do 00:22:43.66\00:22:47.06 with consumer electronics of any kind. 00:22:47.10\00:22:49.76 Even things that will never be on the market, because, 00:22:49.80\00:22:52.13 you know, they're there just as a show-and-tell, 00:22:52.17\00:22:53.94 maybe they don't get traction or whatever, 00:22:53.97\00:22:55.54 so I mean, just everything is there. 00:22:55.57\00:22:57.77 And usually if you see something there it's-- 00:22:57.81\00:23:00.08 An engineer's dream vacation, huh? 00:23:00.11\00:23:02.51 It's a playground. Yes. 00:23:02.54\00:23:03.88 Disney land for engineers, there you go. 00:23:03.91\00:23:05.25 There you go. 00:23:05.28\00:23:06.82 You know, you get and six months down the road, 00:23:06.85\00:23:10.02 you know, you might see it on the market. 00:23:10.05\00:23:12.15 You know, you saw it first in CES. 00:23:12.19\00:23:13.52 So I went specifically that January to find USB technology 00:23:13.56\00:23:19.29 that I could buy for less than a dollar. 00:23:19.33\00:23:22.16 A USB, just standard USB thumb drive that we have 00:23:22.20\00:23:26.63 and use all the time. 00:23:26.67\00:23:28.04 I, you know, we had the financial model 00:23:28.07\00:23:30.41 for this worked really well, 00:23:30.44\00:23:31.77 you know, we were able to purchase them 00:23:31.81\00:23:33.14 for sixty-ish cents, you know, in bulk. 00:23:33.17\00:23:36.04 We were able to sell them for a dollar to the members, 00:23:36.08\00:23:39.21 cover the costs of distribution. 00:23:39.25\00:23:40.65 We didn't make any money on them, 00:23:40.68\00:23:42.02 but it broke even and it worked really well. 00:23:42.05\00:23:44.42 And so that model, I knew intuitively 00:23:44.45\00:23:47.56 that we needed to find something, 00:23:47.59\00:23:48.99 if we were going to use USB technology, 00:23:49.02\00:23:50.73 because at that time, back in '08, 00:23:50.76\00:23:52.83 USB thumb drives were starting to show up 00:23:52.86\00:23:54.46 in giveaways and different things. 00:23:54.50\00:23:56.13 And they're cool, you know, they're new they're neat, 00:23:56.16\00:23:58.43 you know, they were replacing the floppy disks, 00:23:58.47\00:24:00.77 you know, they weren't using those anymore. 00:24:00.80\00:24:02.87 And so I though, shoot, 00:24:02.90\00:24:04.24 if I can get a 100,000 of these, 00:24:04.27\00:24:08.24 you know, at 75 cents a piece or something from China, 00:24:08.28\00:24:12.35 then we can load bibleinfo.com on all of these thumb drives 00:24:12.38\00:24:15.88 and share them like the leaves of autumn 00:24:15.92\00:24:17.79 and the whole model works all over again. 00:24:17.82\00:24:19.89 It's got the same wow factor, the same cool factor. 00:24:19.92\00:24:23.22 Well, I canvassed everybody 00:24:23.26\00:24:25.46 that had anything to do with USB at CES. 00:24:25.49\00:24:28.76 I think I must have walked 20 miles. 00:24:28.80\00:24:30.33 My wife was with me and we were both foot sore 00:24:30.37\00:24:32.57 by the time we were done. 00:24:32.60\00:24:34.04 I mean, we visited SanDisk, we visited, 00:24:34.07\00:24:36.27 you know, all of the big names and all the little people 00:24:36.30\00:24:39.04 from China that were, you know, they have pavilions 00:24:39.07\00:24:41.51 just full of these vendors, and what I found out was 00:24:41.54\00:24:46.41 that USB technology could not be purchased 00:24:46.45\00:24:49.02 for less than three dollars a unit, period. 00:24:49.05\00:24:51.79 Which was cost prohibitive. Which was cost prohibitive. 00:24:51.82\00:24:54.16 Which actually turned out to be good news. 00:24:54.19\00:24:55.92 Yes. 00:24:55.96\00:24:57.29 So I'm back in my hotel room, just totally disgusted 00:24:57.33\00:25:01.60 and disappointed and fiddling with my name badge 00:25:01.63\00:25:05.73 and there's lump in it. 00:25:05.77\00:25:07.20 I'm like, this is weird so I tear it apart 00:25:07.24\00:25:09.07 and there is a chip inside 00:25:09.10\00:25:10.44 with little antennas on both sides, 00:25:10.47\00:25:12.87 it was an RFID tag. 00:25:12.91\00:25:14.98 They've been tracking us through the whole show. 00:25:15.01\00:25:18.05 Through our name badges, you know, you register, 00:25:18.08\00:25:19.91 they know who you are and so, you know, 00:25:19.95\00:25:21.45 they know which booths you visited and everything 00:25:21.48\00:25:24.25 and in that moment it hit me, I'm like, 00:25:24.29\00:25:26.52 if they can do that with a name badge, 00:25:26.55\00:25:28.36 why can't I make a USB drive out of paper. 00:25:28.39\00:25:32.73 And so that was the God moment. 00:25:32.76\00:25:34.36 That was the epiphany that launched, 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.06 you know, what's been now almost a eight-year journey 00:25:36.10\00:25:38.23 of building IntelliPaper the company. 00:25:38.27\00:25:40.34 So you, the Lord gives you this idea 00:25:40.37\00:25:44.51 and when we're talking about a USB that's out of paper, 00:25:44.54\00:25:47.34 it's kind of think of it like it's cardboard. 00:25:47.38\00:25:52.11 Actually you've got something. Yeah, I've got one. 00:25:52.15\00:25:54.55 Here is a business card 00:25:54.58\00:25:56.52 that's a standard paper business card, 00:25:56.55\00:25:59.72 but if I fold it in half, like this. 00:25:59.75\00:26:03.06 Let's see if we can get camera in on this? 00:26:03.09\00:26:05.09 Yeah. 00:26:05.13\00:26:06.46 I think you're gonna have to lift it up, 00:26:06.49\00:26:07.83 the flowers are in the way. 00:26:07.86\00:26:09.20 So you're taking your standard business card. 00:26:09.23\00:26:10.57 So I take my business card and I fold it in half, like so, 00:26:10.60\00:26:16.14 and now I can plug it in to a USB port 00:26:16.17\00:26:18.37 on a computer, just like. 00:26:18.41\00:26:19.74 Do you have this on a something? 00:26:19.77\00:26:22.44 We got some B-roll actually that. 00:26:22.48\00:26:23.88 Let's look at that. Then again they can see that again. 00:26:23.91\00:26:25.35 Look at that footage. 00:26:25.38\00:26:26.72 So you can just turn a business card into-- 00:26:26.75\00:26:29.75 Or any paper card for that matter. 00:26:29.78\00:26:31.12 Oh, any paper card. Here we go. Yes. Here we go. 00:26:31.15\00:26:32.49 This is a one of IntelliPaper's products The Great Hope. 00:26:32.52\00:26:36.76 And you can see that as you bend that, 00:26:36.79\00:26:40.03 you can end up with a USB. 00:26:40.06\00:26:43.57 And that just is amazing. 00:26:43.60\00:26:45.53 And so it will probably get plugged in here you'll see how. 00:26:45.57\00:26:47.77 Plugged in. 00:26:47.80\00:26:50.81 And you can think of this kind of like a key 00:26:50.84\00:26:54.31 that then unlocks this vault of treasures 00:26:54.34\00:26:57.45 on this great hope. 00:26:57.48\00:26:58.81 You can download the-- 00:26:58.85\00:27:01.18 Almost any kind of content that you can produce 00:27:01.52\00:27:03.89 and put in that vault, you can share with other people. 00:27:03.92\00:27:06.45 So this particular, when you have this product, 00:27:06.49\00:27:09.32 you have the PDF file. 00:27:09.36\00:27:12.59 You can then download the audio. 00:27:12.63\00:27:13.96 The Great Hope is one of the sharing books 00:27:14.00\00:27:15.73 that we've had for a while and so what we've done 00:27:15.76\00:27:18.80 is we've distilled it to a card, you know, 00:27:18.83\00:27:21.20 so here is a pack of them right here 00:27:21.24\00:27:23.20 and we on that we have the PDF, the Kindle file, 00:27:23.24\00:27:27.94 the epub file and the MP3 audio files. 00:27:27.98\00:27:32.88 That's amazing. 00:27:32.91\00:27:34.25 All in one paper card that can be easily handed out. 00:27:34.28\00:27:36.69 That's amazing. 00:27:36.72\00:27:38.05 Okay, so kind of let's back up a just a minute, 00:27:38.09\00:27:39.79 I think we jumped up, but the, so, you, 00:27:39.82\00:27:44.49 God gave you the idea 00:27:44.53\00:27:45.99 of how to do this incredible product. 00:27:46.03\00:27:49.36 You began the business. 00:27:49.40\00:27:51.23 Tell us about 00:27:51.27\00:27:52.60 some of the beginning of the business. 00:27:52.63\00:27:56.81 Well, so when the idea was given to me, 00:27:56.84\00:28:00.84 you know, you're an engineer, you go to school and you learn, 00:28:00.88\00:28:03.98 you know, a broad range of topics. 00:28:04.01\00:28:07.08 You know, you're not a specialist 00:28:07.12\00:28:08.45 necessarily in any particular thing. 00:28:08.48\00:28:10.22 Well, this particular product needed a few specialties 00:28:10.25\00:28:14.06 that I wasn't, you know, up on. 00:28:14.09\00:28:16.59 So I have spent an entire year researching that. 00:28:16.62\00:28:20.66 One of the first things I needed to determine 00:28:20.70\00:28:22.46 was whether the cost would work. 00:28:22.50\00:28:24.90 You know, I knew from the experience bibleinfo CD 00:28:24.93\00:28:27.77 that we had to, we had to be able to make these 00:28:27.80\00:28:30.41 for less than a dollar. 00:28:30.44\00:28:32.37 In volume, in time, you know, scale and all that. 00:28:32.41\00:28:35.68 And so I spent a long time researching the components 00:28:35.71\00:28:39.21 that would go into this, what they would cost, 00:28:39.25\00:28:41.25 the raw material, all of that. 00:28:41.28\00:28:43.35 And when I finally convinced myself 00:28:43.39\00:28:46.12 that this was a viable idea, then went to, 00:28:46.15\00:28:51.23 there is a program in Washington State 00:28:51.26\00:28:52.69 called the innovation assessment program 00:28:52.73\00:28:54.56 that's run through Washington State University, 00:28:54.60\00:28:56.83 and so they'll take your idea 00:28:56.87\00:28:58.70 and they'll do some market research 00:28:58.73\00:29:00.30 and they'll do a patent search and they have a team of experts 00:29:00.34\00:29:03.97 and it's all under nondisclosure, evaluate it 00:29:04.01\00:29:06.31 and then they grade, they score it. 00:29:06.34\00:29:08.41 And if you're, if you get the speck is 00:29:08.44\00:29:11.88 if you get 50 percent or higher, 00:29:11.91\00:29:13.78 that's market valuable. 00:29:13.82\00:29:15.45 IntelliPaper scored 75 percent on this. 00:29:15.48\00:29:17.52 Wonderful. 00:29:17.55\00:29:18.89 So on the strength of that, I filed for two patents 00:29:18.92\00:29:22.19 on the idea and this was, you know, the incredible thing, 00:29:22.22\00:29:24.79 Shelley, because when I went into this space 00:29:24.83\00:29:27.73 and I started researching it I said, I can't believe 00:29:27.76\00:29:30.83 no ones ever thought of this before, 00:29:30.87\00:29:33.50 and, you know, the patent search came back etcetera, 00:29:33.54\00:29:35.74 there was a gapping hole in the IP space where, 00:29:35.77\00:29:39.07 you know, this is now squarely plugged of course 00:29:39.11\00:29:41.64 with our patents, but nobody had done this before. 00:29:41.68\00:29:46.35 So on the strength of that, I filed two patents 00:29:46.38\00:29:48.28 and then I began working on the technology. 00:29:48.32\00:29:50.19 It took us three years to get a first working prototype. 00:29:50.22\00:29:54.72 And so the summer of 2011, I held in my hands 00:29:54.76\00:29:59.33 for the first time, real working business cards 00:29:59.36\00:30:02.06 that had all the pieces. 00:30:02.10\00:30:04.23 And one of the key components that we had is, 00:30:04.27\00:30:07.30 you know, every chip, every chip that is made is, 00:30:07.34\00:30:13.48 you know, starts as a silicon wafer, 00:30:13.51\00:30:16.44 and here is a silicon wafer of our chip. 00:30:16.48\00:30:18.31 There's 5,500 little chips and I think we a picture of, 00:30:18.35\00:30:21.85 you know, how small they are, that we can show briefly, 00:30:21.88\00:30:24.69 they're next to a penny. 00:30:24.72\00:30:26.05 That's amazing. 00:30:26.09\00:30:27.42 There's 5,500-- 00:30:27.46\00:30:29.19 More than 5,500. That is amazing. 00:30:29.22\00:30:33.33 And you cut these by hand? No. No. No. 00:30:33.36\00:30:36.73 I thought you told me that you were trying to automate them. 00:30:36.77\00:30:38.83 No, this is standard chip technology. 00:30:38.87\00:30:42.90 All the other electronics we have, cameras, televisions, 00:30:42.94\00:30:45.54 phones, everything have silicon chips in them, 00:30:45.57\00:30:48.18 and they all start their life as these wafers. 00:30:48.21\00:30:51.95 But we had to pull 00:30:51.98\00:30:53.52 special finishing technologies together. 00:30:53.55\00:30:57.12 We had to work with the manufactures 00:30:57.15\00:31:00.32 to create these minuscule little chips, 00:31:00.36\00:31:03.49 for us to do very precise specification, 00:31:03.53\00:31:05.89 so that, you know, they could be put into paper 00:31:05.93\00:31:09.06 instead of, you know, sorted down on a circuit boards. 00:31:09.10\00:31:11.33 Right. 00:31:11.37\00:31:12.70 And we don't need to get too, 00:31:12.73\00:31:14.77 we've go people out here going, "What's a USB?" 00:31:14.80\00:31:17.64 We don't want to get too technical, 00:31:17.67\00:31:19.57 but do answer that question for a moment, 00:31:19.61\00:31:22.51 'cause I know they're people, you'll see 00:31:22.54\00:31:24.51 that there is such an incredible opportunity 00:31:24.55\00:31:27.32 for ministry in this. 00:31:27.35\00:31:29.62 What is a USB 00:31:29.65\00:31:31.05 and then why is it exciting that this is a paper USB? 00:31:31.09\00:31:35.19 So USB stands for universal serial bus 00:31:35.22\00:31:39.03 and that's a technical term that simple means, 00:31:39.06\00:31:41.60 it's a plug that every computer has that you can put stuff in 00:31:41.63\00:31:47.54 to transfer data and information. 00:31:47.57\00:31:50.27 And so... 00:31:50.31\00:31:51.64 So these are also known as flask drive, they're known-- 00:31:51.67\00:31:53.78 Yeah so into the USB plug on a computer, 00:31:53.81\00:31:57.81 you'll plug in a USB device. 00:31:57.85\00:31:59.78 Non we're used to flash drives or mice or keyboards, 00:31:59.81\00:32:03.99 or, you know, camcorders, or hard drives, 00:32:04.02\00:32:06.92 or whatever you want to transfer information. 00:32:06.96\00:32:09.49 So the flash drive being the common thing 00:32:09.52\00:32:11.39 that many people use, it's a little USB stick, 00:32:11.43\00:32:15.66 now we can have them on a paper card 00:32:15.70\00:32:17.43 and not only is this very inexpensive, 00:32:17.47\00:32:20.37 but now I have something tangible 00:32:20.40\00:32:22.44 that I can give anybody 00:32:22.47\00:32:24.11 that can have whatever content that I want on it. 00:32:24.14\00:32:27.34 So, let me just make this comment. 00:32:27.38\00:32:33.35 intelliPaper, is a business that has a secular side to it, 00:32:33.38\00:32:38.35 they're doing business with people like FedEx, 00:32:38.39\00:32:41.16 and in various secular applications, 00:32:41.19\00:32:44.83 but you're also doing something on the-- 00:32:44.86\00:32:49.63 What they're trying to do the business module is 00:32:49.66\00:32:51.73 to get the secular to support the ministry side. 00:32:51.77\00:32:56.60 but if I am a business owner, 00:32:56.64\00:33:00.18 say I have my business cards made through you, 00:33:00.21\00:33:02.84 and let's say that I make a widget, 00:33:02.88\00:33:07.28 and it's really a unique widget, 00:33:07.32\00:33:09.32 but I have these business cards made 00:33:09.35\00:33:11.29 that I can fold up hand out, and some body can fold this up, 00:33:11.32\00:33:15.46 plug this little USB into their computer 00:33:15.49\00:33:20.10 and all of a sudden, my entire presentation 00:33:20.13\00:33:22.86 of the widget, a demonstration, audio, video, 00:33:22.90\00:33:26.84 everything is accessible through this little key. 00:33:26.87\00:33:32.11 Intelligent piece of paper. 00:33:32.14\00:33:33.58 It's an intelligent piece of paper. 00:33:33.61\00:33:35.24 Think of it like a catalog, you know, back in the old days 00:33:35.28\00:33:39.45 before computers, you know, you get the Sears catalog. 00:33:39.48\00:33:41.35 You could have your catalog 00:33:41.38\00:33:42.72 if you were a business owner on this. 00:33:42.75\00:33:44.09 That's right. 00:33:44.12\00:33:45.45 Also, now instead of giving someone just a paper card 00:33:45.49\00:33:46.89 with your contact information, you give them a tangible token, 00:33:46.92\00:33:51.09 key to an entire experience 00:33:51.13\00:33:53.53 that can tell them anything you want them to know. 00:33:53.56\00:33:55.96 That's amazing. 00:33:56.00\00:33:57.33 And the good news for the business person 00:33:57.37\00:33:58.83 is in addition to giving that information 00:33:58.87\00:34:00.80 to whoever it is they want to share it with, 00:34:00.84\00:34:03.14 the business person can also know 00:34:03.17\00:34:05.17 when that person connects. 00:34:05.21\00:34:06.88 Whether it's via the USB, 00:34:06.91\00:34:08.24 we actually gave you three options, 00:34:08.28\00:34:09.94 when it comes to communicating. 00:34:09.98\00:34:11.58 Via the USB, via the quick response code, 00:34:11.61\00:34:15.12 so if you want to do it live and interactively in person, 00:34:15.15\00:34:17.82 if they've got a smart phone or a tablet, 00:34:17.85\00:34:19.92 they can scan it immediately 00:34:19.95\00:34:21.52 and begin to have that experience 00:34:21.56\00:34:22.96 while they're there with you 00:34:22.99\00:34:24.63 and that can help you start to share the message, 00:34:24.66\00:34:27.00 perhaps in a little easier, little more effective way. 00:34:27.03\00:34:29.93 And then there is a third option 00:34:29.96\00:34:31.30 we call near-field communications as well. 00:34:31.33\00:34:33.44 Yeah, the radio frequency wireless. 00:34:33.47\00:34:35.40 Oh, things are getting, boy, when the Bible says 00:34:35.44\00:34:37.97 knowledge shall increase, it's amazing. 00:34:38.01\00:34:40.58 So you found out that there was a whole-- 00:34:40.61\00:34:42.44 that so now have, how many, 17 patents? 00:34:42.48\00:34:46.01 We've been blessed with 15 patents. 00:34:46.05\00:34:47.85 Issues patents and there's more on the way, 00:34:47.88\00:34:49.75 we're working on a fairly large IP portfolio. 00:34:49.78\00:34:53.25 That is so amazing. 00:34:53.29\00:34:54.69 So now let's take it to the idea of how, 00:34:54.72\00:34:59.29 let me see one of your Great Hopes. Thank you. 00:34:59.33\00:35:02.23 So now you've got some thing that, 00:35:02.26\00:35:07.10 have you every tired to give away a book to somebody 00:35:07.14\00:35:09.34 and they're going, "No, no, no thank you. 00:35:09.37\00:35:10.71 I don't want the book." You know. 00:35:10.74\00:35:12.64 Or a GLOW tract or something, 00:35:12.67\00:35:14.38 "No, no, thank you I don't want a GLOW tract." 00:35:14.41\00:35:16.44 You go up to somebody and tell them, 00:35:16.48\00:35:19.28 "Would you like this? 00:35:19.31\00:35:20.65 This is a book about final days" or whatever, 00:35:20.68\00:35:23.89 and somebody is picking this up and saying, 00:35:23.92\00:35:25.49 "What do you mean this is a book?
