Rasmussen. 00:02:27.84\00:02:30.21 He is the president of Water for Life 00:02:30.25\00:02:31.58 and Berny Leonardo. 00:02:31.61\00:02:32.95 I like that. 00:02:32.98\00:02:34.32 Berny Leonardo is very fusser title name 00:02:34.35\00:02:35.68 who is a coordinator 00:02:35.72\00:02:37.32 and really is stationed in Guatemala 00:02:37.35\00:02:39.99 and so takes care of things down there. 00:02:40.02\00:02:42.02 So we are gonna talk about their story, 00:02:42.06\00:02:44.13 talk about the work of Water for Life in Guatemala. 00:02:44.16\00:02:47.30 How it got started, what it is, what is it doing 00:02:47.33\00:02:50.03 and the attendant miracles that God is brining 00:02:50.07\00:02:53.00 to this ministry as they serve the Lord in that country. 00:02:53.03\00:02:56.20 So it's a great challenge. 00:02:56.24\00:02:58.01 My wife being from Panama. 00:02:58.04\00:02:59.47 As well known literally easier to get in and out of Panama 00:02:59.51\00:03:02.91 and do some things. 00:03:02.94\00:03:04.28 Guatemala little bit tougher 00:03:04.31\00:03:05.91 but the work of God is moving forward 00:03:05.95\00:03:07.92 and these two gentlemen are gonna explain to you 00:03:07.95\00:03:10.05 and talk to you about and show you also 00:03:10.09\00:03:12.05 with some pictures little bit later on 00:03:12.09\00:03:14.26 how God is blessing this ministry 00:03:14.29\00:03:15.69 that we call Water for Life. 00:03:15.72\00:03:17.16 Now before we go to our music I want to talk to both of you, 00:03:17.19\00:03:19.29 just get little background 00:03:19.33\00:03:21.46 because you didn't start out being missionaries 00:03:21.50\00:03:23.90 and working with Water for Life. 00:03:23.93\00:03:26.13 Timothy, where are you from? 00:03:26.17\00:03:27.57 I'm from Spokane area Washington. 00:03:27.60\00:03:30.17 I was born and raised in Michigan. 00:03:30.21\00:03:31.97 My father was a pastor 00:03:32.01\00:03:33.34 Ted Rasmussen in the Michigan Conference for many years. 00:03:33.38\00:03:36.95 But I live in Spokane area right now. 00:03:36.98\00:03:38.85 Okay, that explains all that running around. 00:03:38.88\00:03:42.22 Moving from Michigan to-- 00:03:42.25\00:03:44.72 from Washington to Michigan and back. 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.79 Give me some sense of your childhood. 00:03:46.82\00:03:48.36 You know, you say your father is a pastor 00:03:48.39\00:03:49.82 so you grew up in an Adventist home. 00:03:49.86\00:03:51.19 Yes. 00:03:51.23\00:03:52.56 My father was a pastor, my grandfather was a pastor 00:03:52.59\00:03:55.56 as well on my mother's side. 00:03:55.60\00:03:57.07 So I grew up in a home in Michigan, 00:03:57.10\00:03:59.33 we traveled a lot of difference places in Michigan 00:03:59.37\00:04:02.14 as pastor that move around, 00:04:02.17\00:04:03.51 at least move more than they do now I think. 00:04:03.54\00:04:05.14 That's true. 00:04:05.17\00:04:06.51 But we live in several homes in Michigan. 00:04:06.54\00:04:08.14 I went to Adelphian Academy in Michigan 00:04:08.18\00:04:10.68 and then I graduated from Andrews University 00:04:10.71\00:04:13.11 while my family was in Michigan. 00:04:13.15\00:04:15.92 I just want to ask you 00:04:15.95\00:04:17.29 after two generations of pastors 00:04:17.32\00:04:18.65 how did you escape the cloth there I say. 00:04:18.69\00:04:21.92 I'm not exactly sure how I escaped it. 00:04:21.96\00:04:24.09 Mr. Berny says that I'm still a pastor. 00:04:24.13\00:04:26.83 I don't agree with that. 00:04:26.86\00:04:28.46 I'm a lawyer, 00:04:28.50\00:04:29.83 I went to Georgia State University 00:04:29.86\00:04:31.57 and I studied law and practiced for a while 00:04:31.60\00:04:34.47 in North Carolina in Georgia 00:04:34.50\00:04:36.81 and then about 15 years ago I moved to Washington 00:04:36.84\00:04:39.74 and right now my job is, I'm the elected prosecuting 00:04:39.77\00:04:42.38 attorney for Stevens County, Washington where I live. 00:04:42.41\00:04:46.25 So you are on one side of bar sort of there 00:04:46.28\00:04:49.12 we say jump the bar and now you are on the other side. 00:04:49.15\00:04:52.32 But that's an elected office. Yes, it is. 00:04:52.35\00:04:54.26 That's an office you have to run far. 00:04:54.29\00:04:55.62 Yes, I do. 00:04:55.66\00:04:57.09 I'm on my third term and-- Somebody liked you. 00:04:57.13\00:05:00.13 Somebody liked me, a majority of the people. 00:05:00.16\00:05:03.77 And evidently-- and Lord is blessing. 00:05:03.80\00:05:05.67 Yes, He is. Is it a great difference? 00:05:05.70\00:05:07.74 Is there a great difference from being a defense attorney 00:05:07.77\00:05:11.07 to being a prospecting attorney? 00:05:11.11\00:05:12.57 There can be. 00:05:12.61\00:05:13.94 I believe that a person can do honorable work on both sides. 00:05:13.98\00:05:17.58 As an advocate for people that are accused. 00:05:17.61\00:05:19.81 You know, we have-- 00:05:19.85\00:05:21.18 Jesus is our advocate. Oh, yes. 00:05:21.22\00:05:22.85 And an advocate is needed on the prosecution side 00:05:22.88\00:05:27.16 there is a sense of justice and a prosecutor's job is to do 00:05:27.19\00:05:30.49 what is just for people in situations. 00:05:30.53\00:05:33.16 So I think that Christian people can work 00:05:33.19\00:05:35.10 on either side of that. 00:05:35.13\00:05:36.46 How does-- 00:05:36.50\00:05:39.33 it's kind of one of those ontological questions 00:05:39.37\00:05:41.04 we toss at people for now and then. 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.20 How does your faith, your Christianity inform 00:05:43.24\00:05:47.18 what you have to do every day? 00:05:47.21\00:05:49.54 I try to do the right thing 00:05:49.58\00:05:51.88 and the Lord knows what's right. 00:05:51.91\00:05:54.42 And many circumstances come at me 00:05:54.45\00:05:56.48 and I'm not sure exactly 00:05:56.52\00:05:57.85 what I should do in this situation. 00:05:57.89\00:06:00.06 I take those things to the Lord and I ask the Lord 00:06:00.09\00:06:03.06 what is the right thing and then I try to do 00:06:03.09\00:06:05.13 what the Lord tells me to do about the situation. 00:06:05.16\00:06:07.70 So you bring prayer into your business, 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.06 I do. into your job? 00:06:09.10\00:06:10.43 I do. Good for you. 00:06:10.47\00:06:11.80 I'm in a secular world but occasionally 00:06:11.83\00:06:13.84 I will find an opportunity to pray with someone. 00:06:13.87\00:06:16.74 This last Monday morning I met a man who had-- 00:06:16.77\00:06:19.97 his son had been murdered that weekend 00:06:20.01\00:06:23.08 and he came to my office and was in tears 00:06:23.11\00:06:25.61 and he and I spoke for a few minutes 00:06:25.65\00:06:27.82 about the case and the situation. 00:06:27.85\00:06:29.95 But then I noticed that he was hurting 00:06:29.98\00:06:31.89 and he was weeping and so we were able to pray. 00:06:31.92\00:06:34.89 He was a believer and I was able to pray 00:06:34.92\00:06:37.49 with him for the Lord to calm his heart. 00:06:37.53\00:06:41.23 What grieving father needs just comfort from our Savior. 00:06:41.26\00:06:45.37 And so I do have the opportunity sometimes 00:06:45.40\00:06:47.54 to extend prayer with people. 00:06:47.57\00:06:51.64 So for you in listening to your presentation 00:06:51.67\00:06:55.98 it's not just about getting the conviction 00:06:56.01\00:06:59.51 it's about doing the right thing 00:06:59.55\00:07:00.92 It is. or doing the fair thing. 00:07:00.95\00:07:02.28 Many times it's more important who you don't prosecute 00:07:02.32\00:07:04.69 than who you do. 00:07:04.72\00:07:06.42 And the prosecutor has a duty to do what is just 00:07:06.45\00:07:10.09 not simply to get convictions. 00:07:10.13\00:07:13.66 That is a very did I say enlightened view 00:07:13.70\00:07:18.50 and proud of you, man. 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.60 That's a good biblical work. 00:07:20.64\00:07:22.30 Well, I have a good helper must say the Lord. 00:07:22.34\00:07:26.61 Praise the Lord. 00:07:26.64\00:07:27.98 So now that's about yourself, you got somebody with you. 00:07:28.01\00:07:29.94 No. Yeah. 00:07:29.98\00:07:31.31 Berny Leonardo, you are the coordinator 00:07:31.35\00:07:34.65 for Water for Life in Guatemala. 00:07:34.68\00:07:37.05 Guatemala I suspect like most of the Latin American countries 00:07:37.09\00:07:40.19 predominantly Catholic. 00:07:40.22\00:07:42.19 Yes, they are. 00:07:42.22\00:07:43.56 Did you grow up in an Adventist home 00:07:43.59\00:07:44.93 or Catholic home? 00:07:44.96\00:07:46.29 I grew up in non-Adventist home. 00:07:46.33\00:07:48.40 My father was a catholic, my mother knew the message 00:07:48.43\00:07:51.70 but-- finally we thank the Lord that He took us over 00:07:51.73\00:07:56.17 to good situation that both parents heard 00:07:56.20\00:08:00.78 and they gave us the message. 00:08:00.81\00:08:04.38 So finally we grew up as a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:08:04.41\00:08:08.45 About how old were you when you actually became? 00:08:08.48\00:08:10.39 About seven years. 00:08:10.42\00:08:11.75 I praise the Lord that I knew Him so early. 00:08:11.79\00:08:13.82 Yes. Yes. Yes. 00:08:13.86\00:08:15.66 And I got to ask you because when anytime someone tells me 00:08:15.69\00:08:18.06 "I gave my heart to Lord at five, six, seven 00:08:18.09\00:08:21.03 I always ask did you have any" I call them wilderness years. 00:08:21.06\00:08:25.47 Sometimes during our teenage years 00:08:26.70\00:08:28.30 you kind of stray a little bit, the word kind of cause 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.37 and you may kind of turn your head that way for a while 00:08:30.41\00:08:33.24 or did you kind of stay with the Lord throughout? 00:08:33.27\00:08:35.54 Well, you do have temptation you would like to go out 00:08:35.58\00:08:38.28 and see how things are outside the church. 00:08:38.31\00:08:41.65 But I thank the Lord He led me through His path 00:08:42.52\00:08:47.92 and He comfort me so I didn't have to go so far. 00:08:47.96\00:08:53.23 Praise the Lord. You didn't wandered too far. 00:08:53.26\00:08:55.06 How about you Timothy, did you guys playing straight? 00:08:55.10\00:08:57.07 I spent years in the wilderness wandering. 00:08:57.10\00:09:01.40 As many young people I was baptized 00:09:01.44\00:09:03.34 at 10 or 12-years-old 00:09:03.37\00:09:05.07 and but it wasn't until I was an adult. 00:09:05.11\00:09:08.81 Then I finally realized that what my Savior had done 00:09:08.84\00:09:11.78 for me and I was re-baptized when I was about 35-years-old 00:09:11.81\00:09:17.12 I was re-baptized 00:09:17.15\00:09:18.65 and from then I'm gonna praise the Lord. 00:09:18.69\00:09:20.82 I've been following Him, sometimes not so closely 00:09:20.86\00:09:24.13 but following Him-- Yeah, praise the Lord. 00:09:24.16\00:09:25.56 Praise the Lord. 00:09:25.59\00:09:26.93 It occurs to me that having a father, grandfather, 00:09:26.96\00:09:30.07 even greater grandfather who is an Adventist minister 00:09:30.10\00:09:33.10 doesn't make you-- it makes you an Adventist 00:09:33.13\00:09:35.70 maybe but it certainly doesn't make a child of God. 00:09:35.74\00:09:38.71 That is a personal decision 00:09:38.74\00:09:40.21 that you got to make one on one. 00:09:40.24\00:09:41.58 So you can grow up with the accoutrements 00:09:41.61\00:09:44.28 of Adventism are around you 00:09:44.31\00:09:46.08 but until you find Christ for yourself 00:09:46.11\00:09:47.88 that's when it takes on, it takes on meaning. 00:09:47.92\00:09:50.29 Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:50.32\00:09:51.65 We want to go to our music 00:09:51.69\00:09:53.02 and I want to come back and walk-- 00:09:53.05\00:09:54.39 well, have you guys walk us through 00:09:54.42\00:09:55.76 what Water for Life is and how you sort of moved 00:09:55.79\00:09:58.16 into this because that is a good story 00:09:58.19\00:10:00.00 and it's doing some great work. 00:10:00.03\00:10:01.36 Our music today comes from Gale Jones Murphy, 00:10:01.40\00:10:04.13 great pianist, great singer, great friend of this ministry. 00:10:04.17\00:10:08.27 She is going to be playing this time "Come Thou Fount." 00:10:08.30\00:10:12.64 Well done, Gale Jones Murphy, a bit of a different take 00:14:14.85\00:14:18.62 on a classic song "Come Thou Fount." 00:14:18.65\00:14:21.22 Very, very well done. 00:14:21.26\00:14:22.59 My guests are Timothy Rasmussen and Berny Leonardo, 00:14:22.62\00:14:25.43 they of Water for Life. 00:14:25.46\00:14:28.66 You know, I like your email address 00:14:28.70\00:14:32.33 or your web address is h2oforlife.org, 00:14:32.37\00:14:35.47 well, H2oForLife.org. 00:14:35.50\00:14:40.31 We've done a little bit about your past, 00:14:40.34\00:14:42.41 I want to put you together and how the ministry 00:14:42.44\00:14:44.71 has brought you together. 00:14:44.75\00:14:46.92 Tell me, Timothy, how did Water for Life 00:14:46.95\00:14:49.15 get started and how did you become president? 00:14:49.18\00:14:52.05 Since you used to running for office, 00:14:52.09\00:14:53.66 I know you didn't run for this one though. 00:14:53.69\00:14:57.13 Water for Life began as an endeavor of volunteers 00:14:57.16\00:14:59.86 to solve a contaminated water problem at a school 00:14:59.89\00:15:03.13 and orphanage operated by International Children's 00:15:03.16\00:15:05.63 Care in Guatemala. 00:15:05.67\00:15:07.47 The people there were drinking water from the river. 00:15:07.50\00:15:11.71 And we have a film, we have a picture of some 00:15:11.74\00:15:15.28 ladies in the stream and people get water 00:15:15.31\00:15:19.35 from whatever source that they could. 00:15:19.38\00:15:21.65 For many people it's just river water. 00:15:21.68\00:15:23.85 In times when there is very little water and little flow 00:15:23.89\00:15:27.72 those contaminants are very concentrated. 00:15:27.76\00:15:30.29 So you are washing in the water, 00:15:30.33\00:15:31.66 you are bathing in the water, you are drinking the water, 00:15:31.69\00:15:33.09 you are cooking with the water and all of that's in that one. 00:15:33.13\00:15:35.96 And so you are animals. Yeah. 00:15:36.00\00:15:37.80 I've been in villages where the women were getting 00:15:37.83\00:15:40.40 water from one side of a pond and cattle were standing 00:15:40.44\00:15:43.91 in the water on the other side of the pond. 00:15:43.94\00:15:46.37 And if you say to people this water is dangerous 00:15:46.41\00:15:49.21 they say we know. Yeah. 00:15:49.24\00:15:50.58 But there is no other place for water. 00:15:50.61\00:15:51.95 No other place, yeah. 00:15:51.98\00:15:53.31 So Water for Life began as an endeavor of volunteers 00:15:53.35\00:15:56.02 to solve this problem. 00:15:56.05\00:15:57.62 I was privileged to be on the campus 00:15:57.65\00:16:01.49 when they drilled the first wells and the way 00:16:01.52\00:16:03.69 I heard about Water of Life I was preaching 00:16:03.73\00:16:06.13 at the Countryside Adventist Church in Spokane 00:16:06.16\00:16:09.13 and I heard at a break 00:16:09.16\00:16:11.70 Mr. Bartholomew, he stood up and said 00:16:11.73\00:16:13.44 the drilling rig has been seen inside the customs yard 00:16:13.47\00:16:17.21 at Puerto Barrio and the general reaction 00:16:17.24\00:16:19.97 was praisethe Lord, praise the Lord. 00:16:20.01\00:16:21.91 And afterwards I said to Gary, what is this all about? 00:16:21.94\00:16:24.55 What are you talking about and he told me 00:16:24.58\00:16:26.61 about their efforts and that was when the first rig 00:16:26.65\00:16:29.08 was going down. 00:16:29.12\00:16:30.55 My wife and I went down and were there 00:16:30.59\00:16:32.52 when the first wells were drilled at the school 00:16:32.55\00:16:34.89 and orphanage and my wife fell in love 00:16:34.92\00:16:37.23 with the orphan children and we've been coming back. 00:16:37.26\00:16:40.10 That was about ten years ago 00:16:40.13\00:16:41.90 and we've been coming back every year since. 00:16:41.93\00:16:43.80 Now how big of school you are talking about? 00:16:43.83\00:16:45.17 The school is about 400 students. 00:16:45.20\00:16:46.97 Okay, good size school. 00:16:47.00\00:16:48.34 It's a boarding school, it's a high school 00:16:48.37\00:16:50.17 and the orphanage is about 70 to 100 little children 00:16:50.21\00:16:55.91 and that is right next door to the school. 00:16:55.94\00:16:58.71 So all based on the same complex. 00:16:58.75\00:17:00.12 Basically in the same property. Wow. 00:17:00.15\00:17:02.22 And International Children's Care has done a good work there 00:17:02.25\00:17:05.75 but that's how we got started, how Water for Life got started. 00:17:05.79\00:17:08.42 Now it is International Children's Care 00:17:08.46\00:17:10.29 an Adventist organization? Yes, it is. 00:17:10.33\00:17:11.99 It's from Vancouver, Washington 00:17:12.03\00:17:14.23 and is an Adventist organization. 00:17:14.26\00:17:16.77 So you went down and sort of got the bit 00:17:16.80\00:17:19.57 in your mouth got hooked? Got hooked. 00:17:19.60\00:17:21.14 Yeah. Yeah, got hooked. 00:17:21.17\00:17:23.20 And it came home and continued to work 00:17:23.24\00:17:25.37 with Gary and Water for Life has grown 00:17:25.41\00:17:28.58 from that one beginning where we had just 00:17:28.61\00:17:30.68 a container for a shop and one drilling rig 00:17:30.71\00:17:34.72 we now have three drilling rigs, 00:17:34.75\00:17:37.15 we have six other trucks, we have a large shop, 00:17:37.19\00:17:39.85 we have apartments for our volunteered drillers 00:17:39.89\00:17:42.56 who come from across the United States 00:17:42.59\00:17:44.23 and drill with us and we have facilities there 00:17:44.26\00:17:47.20 to take care of people. 00:17:47.23\00:17:48.76 The workers eat in the school cafeteria 00:17:48.80\00:17:52.07 so we can feed and take care of people. 00:17:52.10\00:17:53.54 Yeah. Yeah. 00:17:53.57\00:17:54.90 But Water for Life has grown to the point 00:17:54.94\00:17:56.27 where we now have 79 wells throughout the Peten Region 00:17:56.30\00:18:00.74 mostly where we are and we think 00:18:00.78\00:18:03.11 that about 30,000 people are drinking water every day 00:18:03.14\00:18:06.41 as a result of the efforts of Water for Life. 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.15 Now, you say that first compound 400 kids 00:18:08.18\00:18:13.49 plus another 70 what kind of output do you need 00:18:13.52\00:18:17.73 a well to produce to make that well, 00:18:17.76\00:18:19.63 to say that this well is a good viable well? 00:18:19.66\00:18:22.06 Depends upon the demand on it and a well that's only 00:18:22.10\00:18:26.50 producing ten gallons, ten gallons a minute running 00:18:26.53\00:18:30.21 24 hours a day or productive rate amount of water. 00:18:30.24\00:18:33.34 So we now serving that campus we have five wells that serve 00:18:33.38\00:18:36.41 those campuses and if one goes down 00:18:36.44\00:18:38.31 they can switch to another one. 00:18:38.35\00:18:40.15 The majority of wells that we produce for villages 00:18:40.18\00:18:43.92 are in places where there is no power. 00:18:43.95\00:18:46.05 So these are the old hand pumps the green in color 00:18:46.09\00:18:49.72 well, you have seen them before and that's what we provide 00:18:49.76\00:18:53.63 in villages and there is about usually between 200 and 600 00:18:53.66\00:18:57.43 people in the village so we think with 79 wells 00:18:57.47\00:19:00.87 we've got about 30,000 people that are depending 00:19:00.90\00:19:03.30 on the water everyday. 00:19:03.34\00:19:04.67 Yeah, praise the Lord. 00:19:04.71\00:19:06.04 Now how did you run into Brother Berny over there? 00:19:06.07\00:19:08.64 I met my friend Berny the very first time 00:19:08.68\00:19:10.81 we were there and he was the business manager 00:19:10.85\00:19:14.12 of the school at that time and we were 00:19:14.15\00:19:17.19 closely associated and I think he and I recognized 00:19:17.22\00:19:20.89 that we are brothers in the Lord. 00:19:20.92\00:19:23.63 And our friendship has gathered, has continued 00:19:23.66\00:19:27.43 and we have visited in his home and he visits in our home 00:19:27.46\00:19:30.90 when he comes north. 00:19:30.93\00:19:32.83 But we are just friends and our families are friends. 00:19:32.87\00:19:35.57 Berny, when you saw that there was an interest of people 00:19:36.64\00:19:40.41 in the United States to come down 00:19:40.44\00:19:41.78 and began to do wells 00:19:41.81\00:19:44.88 how did that strike you? 00:19:44.91\00:19:46.25 How did you respond to that? 00:19:46.28\00:19:48.68 Well, that influence in us, you know, all these people 00:19:48.72\00:19:52.25 without any interest were giving us something 00:19:52.29\00:19:56.12 that was vital for ourselves, for the school, 00:19:56.16\00:19:59.26 for the orphanage. 00:19:59.29\00:20:00.96 Then after that they said, "We are drillers." 00:20:01.00\00:20:04.07 So they started with a truck. 00:20:04.10\00:20:07.74 The first well they made there were two young people 00:20:07.77\00:20:12.44 just smart, didn't had the money. 00:20:12.47\00:20:14.74 They said, we are going to give you a well 00:20:14.78\00:20:17.75 because we were drinking water from the river 00:20:17.78\00:20:19.71 that was contaminated. 00:20:19.75\00:20:21.55 Some of the missionaries went and brush their teeth 00:20:21.58\00:20:24.82 and they, got sick. 00:20:24.85\00:20:26.92 I said, no, no, this can't be. 00:20:26.96\00:20:29.62 So the well was not productive. 00:20:29.66\00:20:31.39 The first well went down but they paid it. 00:20:31.43\00:20:35.43 The Lord gave them the money to pay. 00:20:35.46\00:20:37.97 And after that we started with the school. 00:20:38.00\00:20:40.94 We do maintenance also for the school 00:20:40.97\00:20:45.44 and people started to come from other places they say, 00:20:45.47\00:20:49.54 you've got a rig, why don't you give us water. 00:20:49.58\00:20:53.08 We don't have water. So we started it. 00:20:53.11\00:20:56.18 Now, I see. 00:20:56.22\00:20:57.55 So the fact that you had a drilling apparatus 00:20:57.59\00:21:02.02 kind of made you a hot property as I suspect and people 00:21:02.06\00:21:04.73 want you to come and do that for them also. 00:21:04.76\00:21:06.66 That's-- the need is huge, the need is huge. 00:21:06.70\00:21:10.17 Every village, every village needs a well. 00:21:10.20\00:21:12.53 People need clean water. Yeah. 00:21:12.57\00:21:14.04 It's just a basic thing. 00:21:14.07\00:21:15.74 You know, here in the United States 00:21:15.77\00:21:17.11 we don't think about it. 00:21:17.14\00:21:18.47 We water our lawns with clean water. 00:21:18.51\00:21:21.54 We flush our toilets with drinkable water 00:21:21.58\00:21:24.11 and down there just a bottle of water can save a life. 00:21:24.15\00:21:27.52 Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:27.55\00:21:28.88 We don't think about it here. 00:21:28.92\00:21:31.02 So I suspect that is, it's 00:21:31.05\00:21:32.92 and we will talk about this in just a little bit. 00:21:32.95\00:21:35.06 It's a great way to show the love of Christ 00:21:35.09\00:21:38.19 and anybody who is drilling wells 00:21:38.23\00:21:39.86 and bringing that kind of service 00:21:39.89\00:21:41.40 to a village 00:21:41.43\00:21:43.03 people want to hear what you got to say I suspect. 00:21:43.06\00:21:44.83 Yes. Yeah. 00:21:44.87\00:21:46.20 When we are in a village drilling a well 00:21:46.23\00:21:48.27 one of the things we do is that we have a dental clinic 00:21:48.30\00:21:51.71 in that village or a medical clinic 00:21:51.74\00:21:54.04 with one of our volunteers. 00:21:54.08\00:21:55.71 And at the same time we pass out literature. 00:21:55.74\00:21:58.25 We provided literature by the Light Bearers, 00:21:58.28\00:22:00.62 we partnered with them 00:22:00.65\00:22:02.15 and distribute lot of Spanish literature. 00:22:02.18\00:22:05.25 And we will do that in the village 00:22:05.29\00:22:07.09 and the people are curious as to what's going on 00:22:07.12\00:22:10.89 and they ask, why are you doing this? 00:22:10.93\00:22:13.09 Sometimes they think that we are gonna charge 00:22:13.13\00:22:14.80 them for the well. 00:22:14.83\00:22:16.16 We put it in and then charge. 00:22:16.20\00:22:17.53 We say, no it's free, it's free, it's free. 00:22:17.57\00:22:19.30 But why? 00:22:19.33\00:22:20.67 Well, because we love you and that's because 00:22:20.70\00:22:23.30 Jesus loves you and it's a natural opportunity. 00:22:23.34\00:22:27.08 And as the well develops in the village and the people 00:22:27.11\00:22:30.21 get comfortable that that we are not there 00:22:30.25\00:22:32.28 to sell them or do anything they are willing to listen. 00:22:32.31\00:22:35.88 And free dental work and free medical clinics 00:22:35.92\00:22:39.22 they understand that we care about them 00:22:39.25\00:22:41.79 and it grows from there and if there is an interest 00:22:41.82\00:22:45.26 we will hire a Bible worker and put a Bible worker 00:22:45.29\00:22:47.80 in a village for a year and then souls are won. 00:22:47.83\00:22:50.90 And as that interest grows in the village 00:22:50.93\00:22:54.24 then we will think about building a church. 00:22:54.27\00:22:56.50 Water for Life uses the well as a platform to get the gospel 00:22:56.54\00:23:02.71 to the people. 00:23:02.74\00:23:04.08 We have built between 13, 14 churches now 00:23:04.11\00:23:11.25 in the Peten Region where we are 00:23:11.29\00:23:13.59 and those churches are packed. 00:23:13.62\00:23:16.09 People are hungry and thirsty for the gospel. 00:23:16.12\00:23:19.89 So this is not-- I'm getting a picture 00:23:19.93\00:23:21.30 this is not kind of a, okay, we go and build a well 00:23:21.33\00:23:23.67 and we're gone see you later, God bless you. 00:23:23.70\00:23:26.27 It's kind of a comprehensive kind of thing. 00:23:26.30\00:23:27.67 Yes, it is. 00:23:27.70\00:23:29.04 So that when the well is going and you are also doing some 00:23:29.07\00:23:30.91 parallel things medical, dental 00:23:30.94\00:23:33.38 other kinds of things that are a value to that village. 00:23:33.41\00:23:37.31 Yes. Yeah. 00:23:37.35\00:23:38.68 And we believe 00:23:38.71\00:23:40.05 in the sustainability of the water. 00:23:40.08\00:23:42.08 Berny is among his many skills he is now a trained worker 00:23:42.12\00:23:46.32 for the wells, a technician and during the season 00:23:46.35\00:23:49.46 when the drillers aren't there which is from 00:23:49.49\00:23:51.29 January to April Berny will maintain wells. 00:23:51.33\00:23:55.36 They call him and they say, the well is down, 00:23:55.40\00:23:57.13 the pump is down and he will get the crew, 00:23:57.17\00:24:01.00 another fellow that is with him and they will take 00:24:01.04\00:24:03.30 the pump service truck out and they will change out 00:24:03.34\00:24:05.91 the parts that are bad on the pump 00:24:05.94\00:24:07.51 and the people are happy and... 00:24:07.54\00:24:10.38 Many time in a well 00:24:10.41\00:24:11.78 we have a dedication of a well after a well 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.75 is put in the people are very receptive to the Lords work. 00:24:14.78\00:24:20.36 Berny, I got to ask you 00:24:20.39\00:24:21.72 how does one go from an accounting background 00:24:21.76\00:24:25.59 which I suspect you have because 00:24:25.63\00:24:26.96 you are the business manager to inspect a gadget. 00:24:27.00\00:24:31.10 You know, Mr. Fixit, you kind of, 00:24:31.13\00:24:33.20 you kind of all purpose guy 00:24:33.23\00:24:37.11 but we just pressing that you go back to school 00:24:37.14\00:24:39.31 and just kind of learn by doing. 00:24:39.34\00:24:41.64 Well, it goes down like you do hear in 3ABN, you know, 00:24:41.68\00:24:45.45 you like to serve and serving people makes you happy. 00:24:45.48\00:24:49.15 So that brought me into this and they taught me to do it. 00:24:49.18\00:24:53.25 In one of those occasions they say, Mr. Berny, you go, 00:24:53.29\00:24:56.76 you need to go and buy a piece of land 00:24:56.79\00:24:58.73 where we drill a well. 00:24:58.76\00:25:00.10 For what? We need a church there. 00:25:00.13\00:25:02.86 So they send a Bible worker there 00:25:02.90\00:25:04.70 and I was happy to assist also, we build a church. 00:25:04.73\00:25:11.91 One day a little girl pass by 00:25:11.94\00:25:14.78 and I saw that there was a snake, 00:25:14.81\00:25:18.05 so one of the locals killed the snake. 00:25:18.08\00:25:20.82 Later in the evening this little girl 00:25:20.85\00:25:22.98 was bitten by a snake 00:25:23.02\00:25:25.72 and she pass all night at home, this is almost 00:25:25.75\00:25:29.12 two hours drive from where we were and we were building 00:25:29.16\00:25:35.46 and they said, Mr. Berny, are you downtown. 00:25:35.50\00:25:38.33 Said, what happened? 00:25:38.37\00:25:39.70 Says, one of my little girls got bitten by a snake. 00:25:39.73\00:25:43.57 So we did a little charcoal thing and took her down. 00:25:43.61\00:25:48.34 Praise the Lord, he-- we prayed for her 00:25:48.38\00:25:50.75 and she was recovered. 00:25:50.78\00:25:52.58 Praise the Lord. 00:25:52.61\00:25:53.95 She assists that church every Sabbath 00:25:53.98\00:25:57.49 and every time there is church is going on they are there. 00:25:57.52\00:26:02.19 She is there, her brothers and sisters, her mother, 00:26:02.22\00:26:05.53 her grandmother. 00:26:05.56\00:26:09.20 But when the news spread that we gave them water, 00:26:09.23\00:26:16.20 we set a church for them, we visit them, 00:26:16.24\00:26:20.01 we pray for them, we help them. Yes. 00:26:20.04\00:26:23.75 So there was a lady they called the witch doctor 00:26:23.78\00:26:27.98 and this witch doctor, her husband died 00:26:28.02\00:26:33.86 so she became a widow with four or five kids. 00:26:33.89\00:26:37.06 Wow. She would go and split wood 00:26:37.09\00:26:40.50 to sell it to maintain her family. 00:26:40.53\00:26:44.30 So we visit, take some food, attend her necessities 00:26:44.33\00:26:48.50 and she became a member of the church. 00:26:48.54\00:26:50.97 Is that so? 00:26:51.01\00:26:52.34 And the neighbor would say, 00:26:52.37\00:26:55.98 why do you have witch in the church? 00:26:56.01\00:26:59.51 The Bible worker said, we wish all of them 00:26:59.55\00:27:01.18 would come to church. 00:27:01.22\00:27:04.05 I've met the lady. God is so powerful. 00:27:04.09\00:27:07.19 Oh, man. Amen. 00:27:07.22\00:27:08.56 Our God is a living God Amen 00:27:08.59\00:27:10.26 and His mercy which is wherever forever. 00:27:10.29\00:27:12.19 And now she goes to school-- 00:27:12.23\00:27:15.43 oh, sorry, she goes to the church, 00:27:15.46\00:27:18.83 she works at the school 00:27:18.87\00:27:21.10 and her family assist the church. 00:27:21.14\00:27:24.87 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:27:24.91\00:27:26.24 That's a testimony for everyone here. 00:27:26.27\00:27:27.84 Yeah. Yeah. 00:27:27.88\00:27:29.21 Being a witch doctor is not too powerful 00:27:29.24\00:27:31.51 for the Lord to turn that, right. 00:27:31.55\00:27:32.88 No, no, that is got to-- so you, Timothy, 00:27:32.91\00:27:35.98 you met her? Yes, I have. 00:27:36.02\00:27:37.39 Praise the Lord. 00:27:37.42\00:27:38.92 Happy Seventh-day Adventist today? 00:27:38.95\00:27:40.42 Yes. Yeah. 00:27:40.46\00:27:41.79 That's amazing so that idea that the young girl was healed 00:27:41.82\00:27:46.43 from the snakebite kind of was the thing 00:27:46.46\00:27:49.96 that germinated all the stuff. Yes. 00:27:50.00\00:27:51.40 It kind of began that. It is very deadly snake 00:27:51.43\00:27:53.47 and the girl was not expected to live 00:27:53.50\00:27:55.77 but through Berny's help in getting her to the hospital 00:27:55.80\00:27:59.17 she lived. 00:27:59.21\00:28:00.54 And I've met that little girl too. 00:28:00.58\00:28:02.41 Praise the Lord. 00:28:02.44\00:28:03.78 But she didn't meet, I saw her picture, 00:28:03.81\00:28:05.35 I saw here sitting there. 00:28:05.38\00:28:06.72 I didn't meet her. Wow. 00:28:06.75\00:28:08.38 Wow. 00:28:08.42\00:28:10.05 The places that you put wells in 00:28:10.09\00:28:12.85 does the village as a whole become very receptive 00:28:12.89\00:28:17.13 to the opening of the gospel or is it kind of touchy 00:28:17.16\00:28:19.86 because you are in a predominant 00:28:19.89\00:28:21.23 Catholic country that were Yes. 00:28:21.26\00:28:22.60 and Catholicism had been there long time 00:28:22.63\00:28:24.87 and is really in the hearts and minds, 00:28:24.90\00:28:26.70 the souls of the people. 00:28:26.74\00:28:28.07 So now comes this new faith, it is buttress by the fact 00:28:28.10\00:28:31.91 that you've given themselves that they need 00:28:31.94\00:28:34.11 does that open a door in most cases 00:28:34.14\00:28:35.84 or it just show some resistance? 00:28:35.88\00:28:38.31 I don't know if there is resistance. 00:28:38.35\00:28:39.75 There is a lack of knowledge about it 00:28:39.78\00:28:42.35 but the wells and the water and the health is a universal-- 00:28:42.38\00:28:46.22 has a universal appeal. Yeah. 00:28:46.25\00:28:48.09 Everybody is interested in the clean water. 00:28:48.12\00:28:50.93 The Catholics it doesn't matter. 00:28:50.96\00:28:52.89 The atheist need clean water as well. 00:28:52.93\00:28:54.86 Very true. Very true. 00:28:54.90\00:28:57.10 Villages who have a heart 00:28:57.13\00:28:59.87 and who care become interested first. 00:28:59.90\00:29:04.37 It's not like the whole village suddenly become an Advent. 00:29:04.41\00:29:06.84 Understood. 00:29:06.88\00:29:08.21 But little by little the work grows 00:29:08.24\00:29:12.38 from one heart to another 00:29:12.41\00:29:14.38 and as we provide the water and provide things 00:29:14.42\00:29:18.15 that they need, 00:29:18.19\00:29:19.72 their hearts are receptive and open to it and people talk. 00:29:19.75\00:29:24.69 When we come and drill the well I mean, 00:29:24.73\00:29:26.96 many times there were people that they just come and watch 00:29:27.00\00:29:30.30 day after day and these old drilling rigs 00:29:30.33\00:29:32.27 pounding away, pounding. 00:29:32.30\00:29:33.74 It takes about two weeks to drill a well 00:29:33.77\00:29:35.77 using the old technology. 00:29:35.80\00:29:37.14 I was gonna ask, yeah, so it's basically just turning 00:29:37.17\00:29:39.14 and pounding and pounding just going. 00:29:39.17\00:29:40.51 It's not much turning, it's pounding away. 00:29:40.54\00:29:43.65 Most of our well are between 200 and 300 feet deep 00:29:43.68\00:29:47.12 and they produce enough for hand pumps and-- 00:29:47.15\00:29:51.35 but it gives-- we are there for long enough 00:29:51.39\00:29:53.36 to have an opportunity to get to know 00:29:53.39\00:29:55.16 some of the people. Yeah. 00:29:55.19\00:29:56.52 So of our drillers speak a little Spanish. 00:29:56.56\00:29:58.76 Mr. Berny comes along and he generally scouts out 00:29:58.79\00:30:01.96 the villages ahead of times where they are asking for, 00:30:02.00\00:30:05.63 we need a well, we need a well. 00:30:05.67\00:30:07.00 So he will go and meet with the elders of the village 00:30:07.04\00:30:10.47 and they will kind of pick a place 00:30:10.51\00:30:12.04 as long as it's public property. 00:30:12.07\00:30:14.08 Yeah, now tell me about that because you don't put wells 00:30:14.11\00:30:16.85 on private land. 00:30:16.88\00:30:19.75 Unless it's a church yard. 00:30:19.78\00:30:21.48 We will put them in a church yard 00:30:21.52\00:30:22.85 but with our churches anybody can come 00:30:22.88\00:30:25.79 in any church that we put in 00:30:25.82\00:30:27.42 they are of course they are willing. 00:30:27.46\00:30:29.56 We were in a village of Sabaneta 00:30:29.59\00:30:31.53 and we are with the mayor 00:30:31.56\00:30:32.89 trying to find a piece of public land 00:30:32.93\00:30:35.16 that would be suitable for a well, yeah. 00:30:35.20\00:30:37.13 And we couldn't find any 00:30:37.17\00:30:38.50 that looked like a good prospect. 00:30:38.53\00:30:41.20 And we told the mayor well, 00:30:41.24\00:30:42.74 it's gonna be hard to find a place. 00:30:42.77\00:30:44.37 He said, well, the road is public 00:30:44.41\00:30:45.97 why don't you drill right here in the road. 00:30:46.01\00:30:47.98 And we said, well, all right, I mean, isn't that's okay 00:30:48.01\00:30:51.51 and he said, well, of course its okay. 00:30:51.55\00:30:53.15 He said, just right over there, would that be all right? 00:30:53.18\00:30:55.08 And we said, well, sure it's easy to get to. 00:30:55.12\00:30:56.95 Something that is fantastic when you mentioned 00:30:56.99\00:30:59.25 the idea that okay, well, 00:30:59.29\00:31:01.26 better in right in the middle of highway here. 00:31:01.29\00:31:02.62 He did. 00:31:02.66\00:31:03.99 And we came back the next year at the well 00:31:04.03\00:31:06.49 and the road comes up, makes a little U turn 00:31:06.53\00:31:08.56 around the well and goes. Yeah. 00:31:08.60\00:31:10.60 But the road down there isn't like a road here. 00:31:10.63\00:31:12.70 Precisely. Track, 00:31:12.73\00:31:14.77 but there is public land 00:31:14.80\00:31:16.14 and we put a well on public land 00:31:16.17\00:31:18.27 so that nobody can say the well is mine, 00:31:18.31\00:31:20.78 the water is mine pay. 00:31:20.81\00:31:23.35 And there was a well that we drilled, 00:31:23.38\00:31:26.98 we didn't know at the time that it was private land 00:31:27.02\00:31:29.98 the well didn't come in we been down 560 feet 00:31:30.02\00:31:33.05 didn't hit nothing, Wow. 00:31:33.09\00:31:34.99 and then we found out later it was a private land. 00:31:35.02\00:31:37.46 Well, we wondered we didn't hit anything. 00:31:37.49\00:31:40.46 Lord's Tabernacle gets you in messed in that 00:31:40.50\00:31:42.86 or embroiled in that. 00:31:42.90\00:31:44.23 That's controversy. 00:31:44.27\00:31:45.60 How do you know or is there someone that tell, 00:31:45.63\00:31:47.67 okay, this part is pretty good, we are gonna hit water here, 00:31:47.70\00:31:50.47 is there anyone that tell? 00:31:50.51\00:31:51.84 You know, what you are doing is just kind of a crapshoot 00:31:51.87\00:31:54.71 for one of better term. 00:31:54.74\00:31:57.51 Experienced drillers have an idea 00:31:57.55\00:32:00.15 from the topography of the land 00:32:00.18\00:32:02.48 where it might be more probable than not but we are fooled. 00:32:02.52\00:32:07.82 Sometimes we drill 120 feet and hit a lot of water, 00:32:07.86\00:32:11.99 sometimes it's 300 feet and hit a little. 00:32:12.03\00:32:15.03 There is water under the earth everywhere 00:32:15.06\00:32:17.30 but there are places that are more easily accessed 00:32:17.33\00:32:21.34 and it's really the experience of the drillers 00:32:21.37\00:32:24.31 and Berny can pick the village and Gary Bartholomew 00:32:24.34\00:32:27.38 will go out there and see a site. 00:32:27.41\00:32:29.54 Often it's in a schoolyard or a churchyard 00:32:29.58\00:32:32.91 or some place where the public comes. 00:32:32.95\00:32:35.55 After we drill a well come back a years or two later 00:32:35.58\00:32:38.75 and there are tracks like the wheels, 00:32:38.79\00:32:41.06 like the spokes of a wagon wheel. 00:32:41.09\00:32:42.52 They were coming from all directions, yeah. 00:32:42.56\00:32:43.89 To the well, to the well. 00:32:43.93\00:32:45.26 The well is the center of attention 00:32:45.29\00:32:46.63 and the center of a fulfillment of a need that the people have. 00:32:46.66\00:32:50.90 And then the literature and they know that these things 00:32:50.93\00:32:54.80 come from the people who gave us the water. 00:32:54.84\00:32:57.04 So you never just build a well without some kind of attendant 00:32:57.07\00:33:01.34 literature distribution so that there is this knowledge 00:33:01.38\00:33:03.65 of the Adventist are doing. 00:33:03.68\00:33:05.28 This is not who is doing this, 00:33:05.31\00:33:06.85 they know, where this is coming from. 00:33:06.88\00:33:08.45 They know that it's Water for Life 00:33:08.48\00:33:10.15 and Mr. Berny has continued contact with these people 00:33:10.19\00:33:13.72 because the next year they will need some service 00:33:13.76\00:33:16.79 on the well or the pump. 00:33:16.83\00:33:18.36 And so Berny goes out and Pastor Rudy 00:33:18.39\00:33:20.60 or someone will go with him 00:33:20.63\00:33:22.16 and they talk with the villagers. 00:33:22.20\00:33:23.77 Well, you know, here's what we can do and, 00:33:23.80\00:33:25.47 you know, we are having some meetings over here 00:33:25.50\00:33:27.24 would you like pass out some literature. 00:33:27.27\00:33:29.44 So we stay in touch with them. 00:33:29.47\00:33:31.31 We develop a relationship with them. 00:33:31.34\00:33:33.38 Great. Great. 00:33:33.41\00:33:34.74 And maintain that relationship by the provision of the water. 00:33:34.78\00:33:38.01 Now I need you to walk me through something 00:33:38.05\00:33:39.38 because what occurs to me is, 00:33:39.41\00:33:41.05 all right, we are building a well, 00:33:41.08\00:33:43.39 we are having a ceremony, 00:33:43.42\00:33:44.75 we are-- the village is aware 00:33:44.79\00:33:46.86 that the Adventist church is doing this. 00:33:46.89\00:33:49.16 You mentioned in some cases you build a church 00:33:49.19\00:33:52.06 and bring a Bible worker 00:33:52.09\00:33:53.43 which you pay for, for a year. 00:33:53.46\00:33:55.13 What is critical math by that I mean, 00:33:55.16\00:33:57.93 how do you know 00:33:57.97\00:33:59.30 when you got enough interest to support 00:33:59.33\00:34:02.00 let's do a little bit more here as opposed to well, 00:34:02.04\00:34:05.84 okay, they know they got the well, 00:34:05.87\00:34:07.31 they are using the well 00:34:07.34\00:34:08.68 but they are not really concerned about 00:34:08.71\00:34:10.85 coming to Adventism 00:34:10.88\00:34:12.21 they are just are thankful for the well 00:34:12.25\00:34:13.88 as or this village 00:34:13.92\00:34:16.32 man there is a lot of energy for Christ 00:34:16.35\00:34:18.42 and they are asking questions. 00:34:18.45\00:34:20.02 How do you know when and where to peruse 00:34:20.06\00:34:22.36 and to sort of build up that area 00:34:22.39\00:34:24.06 as supposed to going on to something else? 00:34:24.09\00:34:25.89 You can tell by the requests, the requests 00:34:25.93\00:34:29.30 and the amount of baptisms that are occurring. 00:34:29.33\00:34:32.13 When we send a Bible worker in 00:34:32.17\00:34:33.87 and the Bible worker then reports to the pastor, 00:34:33.90\00:34:36.60 we have some people ready for baptism 00:34:36.64\00:34:38.91 and the pastor is more and more contact 00:34:38.94\00:34:41.48 and then if we think they can benefit from it 00:34:41.51\00:34:45.58 and if we can find a partner. 00:34:45.61\00:34:47.62 What if your life partners 00:34:47.65\00:34:48.98 with the Upper Columbia Conference, 00:34:49.02\00:34:51.42 you partner with Amazing Facts, with the Quiet Hour? 00:34:51.45\00:34:55.19 Those groups have come down 00:34:55.22\00:34:56.66 and constructed churches in villages where the people 00:34:56.69\00:35:00.26 are receptive and want the church. 00:35:00.30\00:35:03.70 And so it's mainly, it's mainly-- 00:35:03.73\00:35:07.00 I don't think that there is a certain number, 00:35:07.04\00:35:09.04 it's just the opportunity. 00:35:09.07\00:35:10.41 Yeah, the feel of that here's a fertile ground. 00:35:10.44\00:35:13.17 That's right. That's right. 00:35:13.21\00:35:14.61 Now you mentioned you've done 76 wells so far? 00:35:14.64\00:35:17.41 Seventy nine. Seventy nine wells. 00:35:17.45\00:35:19.11 And that's over the ten year stretch? 00:35:19.15\00:35:20.48 Yes. 00:35:20.52\00:35:21.85 All of them still in operation? Yes. 00:35:21.88\00:35:23.42 Well, there was one that went down the day he left. 00:35:23.45\00:35:25.69 He got a call at the airport. 00:35:25.72\00:35:27.86 Which well was that, Berny? 00:35:27.89\00:35:29.82 That was in Santo Domingo. 00:35:29.86\00:35:32.36 Yes, the well is down. 00:35:32.39\00:35:34.60 So as soon as he goes back he got to fix it well. 00:35:34.63\00:35:37.27 What are the kinds of things because you are talking 00:35:37.30\00:35:39.43 about ahand pump well? Yes. 00:35:39.47\00:35:41.27 What are the kinds of things would go wrong? 00:35:41.30\00:35:43.37 That the pump breaks or because it's mechanical 00:35:43.41\00:35:46.34 it's not electrical. Right. 00:35:46.37\00:35:47.94 There is another down there and the cylinder-- 00:35:47.98\00:35:49.54 we buy the best quality hand pumps 00:35:49.58\00:35:51.71 that we can but there is still there's leathers down there 00:35:51.75\00:35:54.42 that ware out occasionally, fitting will break. 00:35:54.45\00:35:58.75 It's hard to get good quality pipe, 00:35:58.79\00:36:00.96 a pipe will snap that's holding the cylinder in the pump. 00:36:00.99\00:36:05.26 Things ware out. 00:36:05.29\00:36:06.66 The pump that selves they round out 00:36:06.70\00:36:10.80 its get so it's not very efficient to pump. 00:36:10.83\00:36:13.44 Those are the things that break 00:36:13.47\00:36:15.40 and also the water has sometimes 00:36:15.44\00:36:18.14 a higher particulate matter 00:36:18.17\00:36:19.77 that wares the pumps little faster. 00:36:19.81\00:36:22.28 If you and I had one of these in our farm 00:36:22.31\00:36:24.51 it would probably last our family for 20 years 00:36:24.55\00:36:26.82 but when you got 400 or 500 people using it 00:36:26.85\00:36:30.39 that gets down to a year or two 00:36:30.42\00:36:32.62 and it means to be repaired and replaced. 00:36:32.65\00:36:35.52 We can repair them in our shop 00:36:35.56\00:36:37.66 and we do keep the stock of repaired things 00:36:37.69\00:36:39.93 so that Berny can switch them up if necessary. 00:36:39.96\00:36:41.40 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:36:41.43\00:36:42.76 Some pumps are being used 24 hours. 00:36:42.80\00:36:45.60 They start from one o'clock in the morning 00:36:45.63\00:36:47.40 and they finish one o'clock. 00:36:47.44\00:36:48.77 So they make lines, you know. 00:36:48.80\00:36:50.94 When there is no water 00:36:50.97\00:36:52.81 everyone wants to have their own water. 00:36:52.84\00:36:55.28 We are also known by-- 00:36:55.31\00:36:57.55 everyone knows that we are Seventh-dayAdventist. 00:36:57.58\00:36:59.75 Yes. 00:36:59.78\00:37:01.12 They ask us Mr. Berny, the ministry of health came up 00:37:01.15\00:37:04.72 and said, we need a well in our nutrition center. 00:37:04.75\00:37:08.19 These good hearted people would maintain and nutrient 00:37:08.22\00:37:14.26 more kids than whoever can take them there 00:37:14.30\00:37:18.83 and they say, we have water? once a week 00:37:18.87\00:37:24.14 how can we survive like that. 00:37:24.17\00:37:27.38 They would take all the clothes or whatever they have 00:37:27.41\00:37:30.61 for two hours driving 00:37:30.65\00:37:33.08 they would spend all day washing on rivers. 00:37:33.11\00:37:36.82 We need a well. 00:37:36.85\00:37:38.62 So they say, okay, we will do it 00:37:38.65\00:37:42.19 through the ministry of health you better come. 00:37:42.22\00:37:45.09 So we went and they made a well. 00:37:45.13\00:37:48.03 Now its serving and they are so happy 00:37:48.06\00:37:50.40 that they can help the kids in this way. 00:37:50.43\00:37:54.24 We have a nice photo of a well in front of a church 00:37:54.27\00:37:56.47 this is the church in -- 00:37:56.50\00:37:58.94 and it's a little village kind 00:37:58.97\00:38:02.08 of beside the highway and there is the church. 00:38:02.11\00:38:05.71 Now that's the Adventist church? 00:38:05.75\00:38:07.08 Yes. 00:38:07.12\00:38:08.45 And the well is right there. Templo Adventista Del 7 Dia. 00:38:08.48\00:38:11.59 And there is one of our pumps in front of a church 00:38:11.62\00:38:14.62 that was build, I'm not sure which-- 00:38:14.66\00:38:16.56 which the conference built that? 00:38:16.59\00:38:17.99 That was Upper Columbia Conference 00:38:18.03\00:38:19.66 built that little church. Praise the Lord. 00:38:19.69\00:38:21.46 No, not little hovels with tin roofs, 00:38:21.50\00:38:23.73 these are solid-- 00:38:23.77\00:38:25.10 No, no. 00:38:25.13\00:38:26.47 That's a good looking. That's a good looking building. 00:38:26.50\00:38:27.84 So you get there your physical water 00:38:27.87\00:38:29.20 and your spiritual water pretty much in a same spot. 00:38:29.24\00:38:31.61 And you see all the ware around that pump 00:38:31.64\00:38:33.24 which is standing around getting the water. 00:38:33.27\00:38:36.14 Indeed. Yeah. 00:38:36.18\00:38:37.51 Well, praise the Lord, 00:38:37.55\00:38:38.88 it is right there next to the church. 00:38:38.91\00:38:40.25 And so in the minds of the people that well 00:38:40.28\00:38:41.62 and that church are one. 00:38:41.65\00:38:42.98 Yes. You know, they are connected. 00:38:43.02\00:38:45.29 Yeah, that is great. 00:38:45.32\00:38:46.65 Because the people that give us the water. 00:38:46.69\00:38:48.46 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:38:48.49\00:38:49.82 Has the government in these communities 00:38:49.86\00:38:52.53 or the national government begun to recognize 00:38:52.56\00:38:54.56 what he is doing? 00:38:54.60\00:38:55.93 Do you get any assistance from him 00:38:55.96\00:38:57.30 or assistance from them or are they available 00:38:57.33\00:39:00.27 to help you anyway to carry on your work? 00:39:00.30\00:39:03.30 What we have done is 00:39:03.34\00:39:04.67 we have donated lot of medical equipment 00:39:04.71\00:39:07.58 to the ministry of health in the Peten Region 00:39:07.61\00:39:10.18 and we are closely connected with the ministry of health. 00:39:10.21\00:39:13.18 We send a container every year with equipment, 00:39:13.21\00:39:15.28 machinery, more things and the Deaconess Hospital 00:39:15.32\00:39:19.05 and Elco company that produces linens for hospital linens. 00:39:19.09\00:39:25.19 They would give us boxes and boxes of material. 00:39:25.23\00:39:28.96 Hospitals are constantly refurbishing their equipment 00:39:29.00\00:39:31.93 Sure. They don't have anything to do with the old stuff, 00:39:31.97\00:39:33.90 they give it to us. 00:39:33.94\00:39:35.27 We put it in a container, we send it down 00:39:35.30\00:39:37.47 and deliver truck loads of material 00:39:37.51\00:39:39.77 to the ministry of health. 00:39:39.81\00:39:41.61 And the ministry of health they know 00:39:41.64\00:39:43.35 what we are giving them in the way of health. 00:39:43.38\00:39:44.71 Yes. 00:39:44.75\00:39:46.08 We put on seminars for the ministry of health, 00:39:46.11\00:39:48.32 for the village Bible workers, 00:39:48.35\00:39:49.92 I mean, the village health workers 00:39:49.95\00:39:52.02 and the government, the central government has-- 00:39:52.05\00:39:56.79 they have some procedures about getting containers in 00:39:56.83\00:40:00.33 but the procedures are long and difficult 00:40:00.36\00:40:02.86 and these procedures sometimes will result 00:40:02.90\00:40:04.80 in a container sitting in the port for months. 00:40:04.83\00:40:07.70 Well, the port charges are $120 a day, 00:40:07.74\00:40:10.51 So pretty soon it's sucking the money 00:40:10.54\00:40:12.87 and so we just import the containers 00:40:12.91\00:40:15.34 and having tried to go through the central government 00:40:15.38\00:40:17.95 but the local ministry of health 00:40:17.98\00:40:19.78 they know what we do. 00:40:19.81\00:40:21.15 They welcome it and they say 00:40:21.18\00:40:23.28 that they can tell 00:40:23.32\00:40:24.75 the health of the people from villages 00:40:24.79\00:40:26.99 where there is good water 00:40:27.02\00:40:28.36 as compared to the once that can't. 00:40:28.39\00:40:30.26 What really amounts to no dead children. 00:40:30.29\00:40:33.03 Right. Right. 00:40:33.06\00:40:34.40 See, that's the blessing. 00:40:34.43\00:40:35.76 And it occurred to me you are getting buy in 00:40:35.80\00:40:37.40 from agencies here in the States 00:40:37.43\00:40:39.97 that help you with things but you are also getting 00:40:40.00\00:40:43.41 the most important is on that other end 00:40:43.44\00:40:45.37 because they can hang you up 00:40:45.41\00:40:46.88 and plus they can as you intimated 00:40:46.91\00:40:49.34 suck your funds dry just let that container sit there. 00:40:49.38\00:40:51.48 Yes. 00:40:51.51\00:40:53.58 So the government is of value to you 00:40:53.62\00:40:55.72 because they know you are a value to them. 00:40:55.75\00:40:57.62 I think that's correct. Yeah. Yeah. 00:40:57.65\00:40:59.22 And praise the Lord for that. 00:40:59.25\00:41:00.59 Give me some sense, you know, we talk about Guatemala, 00:41:00.62\00:41:06.73 where Guatemala is? 00:41:06.76\00:41:08.86 Look I said, I know Panama down below, 00:41:08.90\00:41:11.90 up top is Costa Rica, over here to the right is Honduras. 00:41:11.93\00:41:17.81 Where is Guatemala moving 00:41:17.84\00:41:19.17 from Panama north towards Mexico? 00:41:19.21\00:41:21.48 Just south of Mexico. 00:41:21.51\00:41:22.84 Okay. Okay. 00:41:22.88\00:41:24.28 And the Yucatan Peninsula 00:41:24.31\00:41:26.31 and the Peten Region is part of the Yucatan Peninsula. 00:41:26.35\00:41:30.52 So the peninsula kind of, that 00:41:30.55\00:41:32.92 piece that's kind of jetting out 00:41:32.95\00:41:34.42 towards out into the-- 00:41:34.46\00:41:35.92 Yes, that's the Peten Region of Guatemala. 00:41:35.96\00:41:38.16 Guatemala crosses over to the Pacific, 00:41:38.19\00:41:40.30 this Pacific side but Guatemala is the country 00:41:40.33\00:41:43.10 just south of Mexico. 00:41:43.13\00:41:44.67 Okay, so you are on the-- most on the Atlantic side. 00:41:44.70\00:41:47.14 It's about equal, so crossed. 00:41:47.17\00:41:49.80 Okay. 00:41:49.84\00:41:51.24 How is a particular village or location determined, 00:41:51.27\00:41:55.28 by request, by government assignment? 00:41:55.31\00:41:57.71 How do you say, okay, tomorrow, next week, 00:41:57.75\00:41:59.68 we are gonna go to point B to build a well? 00:41:59.71\00:42:03.08 We have requests from all over Guatemala to come... 00:42:03.12\00:42:06.45 I suspect. and in neighboring countries. 00:42:06.49\00:42:08.82 However because logistically the region of Peten 00:42:08.86\00:42:12.53 is where we are concentrated 00:42:12.56\00:42:13.90 because we can work about 00:42:13.93\00:42:15.80 a couple of hours away from our shop 00:42:15.83\00:42:18.70 but if you are further than that 00:42:18.73\00:42:20.07 and something breaks so you need another tool 00:42:20.10\00:42:22.64 you waste too much time 00:42:22.67\00:42:24.01 going across the country to get it and back. 00:42:24.04\00:42:26.31 The transportation is hard in Guatemala. 00:42:26.34\00:42:28.64 There are some good roads 00:42:28.68\00:42:30.45 but we mainly concentrate in the Peten Region 00:42:30.48\00:42:34.78 because that's where we are and that the need is there too. 00:42:34.82\00:42:38.95 The need is everywhere. Is every where, sure, sure. 00:42:38.99\00:42:40.66 And we can do the best in that area. 00:42:40.69\00:42:44.63 We've got 79 wells but in the probably 00:42:44.66\00:42:47.73 in a 50 miles radius of our shop 00:42:47.76\00:42:50.07 there's over 240 villages. 00:42:50.10\00:42:52.60 So there is people-- So there's work to be done. 00:42:52.63\00:42:54.70 There's work to be done. 00:42:54.74\00:42:56.07 Don't have to go a long ways to do it. 00:42:56.10\00:42:58.11 People would like you to, we would like to do it too. 00:42:58.14\00:43:01.18 If we had more support ever since we would be bigger 00:43:01.21\00:43:05.65 but right now we are concentrated 00:43:05.68\00:43:07.42 in this area and we are, we are working here. 00:43:07.45\00:43:09.45 But I see, Timothy, 00:43:09.48\00:43:11.05 that logistically it just make sense 00:43:11.09\00:43:12.89 to kind of send to yourself and just kind of hub around 00:43:12.92\00:43:15.86 so that you can be efficient 00:43:15.89\00:43:18.16 and try to saturate that one area 00:43:18.19\00:43:20.76 as opposed to just going every where 00:43:20.80\00:43:22.56 and we are not doing anything of value kind of thing. 00:43:22.60\00:43:25.90 That is great. 00:43:25.93\00:43:27.27 Tell-- talk to me about some of the other ministries 00:43:27.30\00:43:28.94 here in the States that are partnering with you 00:43:28.97\00:43:30.31 that are sort of giving you some assistance. 00:43:30.34\00:43:32.27 Amazing Facts sent down a whole team. 00:43:32.31\00:43:35.94 Berny coordinated for them. 00:43:35.98\00:43:37.31 They built-- they built two churches is that right? 00:43:37.35\00:43:40.38 One church. 00:43:40.42\00:43:41.75 One church and they did a-- two wells, 00:43:41.78\00:43:45.12 they did evangelism services 00:43:45.15\00:43:47.79 for about three weeks there, aren't they. 00:43:47.82\00:43:50.29 This and we've also had a group from the Quiet Hour 00:43:50.33\00:43:53.13 who has come down and done some construction work. 00:43:53.16\00:43:55.90 We have regular teams from Upper Columbia Conference 00:43:55.93\00:43:58.33 that have come down and constructed churches 00:43:58.37\00:44:00.67 and lately they did a cooking building 00:44:00.70\00:44:05.94 for a special project 00:44:05.97\00:44:08.14 and that is the Northern Guatemala Mission 00:44:08.18\00:44:10.95 is developing a youth camp and conference center 00:44:10.98\00:44:13.82 right there on the property, right adjacent to where 00:44:13.85\00:44:17.02 its on the same property where we are 00:44:17.05\00:44:19.42 and they had a big building built 00:44:19.45\00:44:21.56 and last year a hurricane came and knocked the building flat. 00:44:21.59\00:44:26.39 This year Mr. Berny and the conference 00:44:26.43\00:44:30.67 which Water for Life health built that building back up 00:44:30.70\00:44:34.04 but the expense suck the funds. 00:44:34.07\00:44:38.17 Our special project that we have 00:44:38.21\00:44:39.54 is to put in a water system in that to serve those youth 00:44:39.57\00:44:44.81 and there are thousands of youth who come. 00:44:44.85\00:44:47.28 And the most they have had at one time 00:44:47.32\00:44:48.65 is 5,000 campers at this place and 50 baptisms at this place. 00:44:48.68\00:44:54.09 I mean, good things are happening. 00:44:54.12\00:44:55.46 Yes, it is. Yeah. Yeah. 00:44:55.49\00:44:56.83 But they don't have a good water system. 00:44:56.86\00:44:58.99 We drilled one well there and the Lord be praised 00:44:59.03\00:45:02.20 that well is the best well we drilled in Guatemala of any. 00:45:02.23\00:45:06.37 It produces over 40 gallons a minute of water 00:45:06.40\00:45:09.50 and now we have is a little solar pump to get it. 00:45:09.54\00:45:11.74 Now say it again, 40 gallons a minute? 00:45:11.77\00:45:13.61 A minute. Wow. 00:45:13.64\00:45:14.98 Forty gallons. Consistently? 00:45:15.01\00:45:16.34 Yes. Three of those. 00:51:53.04\00:51:54.41 Three of those. Yes. 00:51:54.44\00:51:55.78 What is that cost valve part? 00:51:55.81\00:51:57.61 We get them-- to get it down there 00:51:57.65\00:51:59.88 it cost about $6,000 just to shipping. 00:51:59.91\00:52:02.12 To ship it. Just the shipping. 00:52:02.15\00:52:03.72 We sometimes get them donated to us or we purchase them. 00:52:03.75\00:52:07.72 These are old technology machine-- 00:52:07.76\00:52:10.09 that drill is 1950 drilling rig that's still in serving. 00:52:10.13\00:52:15.33 Still serving. That's officially an antique. 00:52:15.36\00:52:17.63 More than officially. It is. 00:52:17.67\00:52:20.24 But they still work? They work. 00:52:20.27\00:52:22.10 A piece of equipment like that out of the box 00:52:22.14\00:52:24.87 and it would cost about how much? 00:52:24.91\00:52:26.74 They don't make those anymore 00:52:26.78\00:52:28.54 but if you found those on the market 00:52:28.58\00:52:30.21 it would be about probably $15,000 for an old used piece. 00:52:30.25\00:52:35.05 Now the rigs are rotary. 00:52:35.08\00:52:36.95 Rotary rigs can do in one day 00:52:36.99\00:52:39.29 what we do in two and half weeks. 00:52:39.32\00:52:41.52 Because you are kind of smashing your way down 00:52:41.56\00:52:43.66 and a rotary is drilling its way down. 00:52:43.69\00:52:46.23 And that's the modern technology. 00:52:46.26\00:52:47.96 But we can repair these machines in Guatemala. 00:52:48.00\00:52:50.93 If you got a rotary rig 00:52:50.97\00:52:52.70 and a high pressure hydraulic pump quits you are done. 00:52:52.73\00:52:57.87 Down there with a welder some pipe 00:52:57.91\00:52:59.67 you can make that thing go again. 00:52:59.71\00:53:02.34 And you have personnel that can do that? 00:53:02.38\00:53:03.91 Yes.
