00:04:25.17\00:04:28.45 Well, that means that you just make sure 00:04:28.48\00:04:30.90 the wellness program runs smoothly 00:04:30.93\00:04:33.51 and everybody's needs are met 00:04:33.54\00:04:35.58 and staff to cover the needs 00:04:35.61\00:04:39.10 and just variety of things. 00:04:39.13\00:04:42.80 I'm a nurse as well, so I work in that area too 00:04:42.83\00:04:47.56 and just it's very all around 00:04:47.59\00:04:52.37 making sure everything goes right. 00:04:52.40\00:04:53.79 Okay. 00:04:53.82\00:04:54.85 Carola, you are the consultant for the massage school. 00:04:54.88\00:05:00.43 Walk me through that. 00:05:00.46\00:05:02.29 Well, I used to own a school, 00:05:02.32\00:05:04.21 actually God owned that we work there 00:05:04.24\00:05:06.70 and it was in close to the Molina 00:05:06.73\00:05:08.75 there in California 00:05:08.78\00:05:10.85 and so I had been praying about 00:05:10.88\00:05:14.11 that there were no longer any massage schools 00:05:14.14\00:05:16.96 in the Adventist world as far as training. 00:05:16.99\00:05:20.40 And so I remember praying and just within a couple days 00:05:20.43\00:05:24.10 I get a call from Black Hills 00:05:24.13\00:05:26.04 saying hey, would you like to come out 00:05:26.07\00:05:27.42 and help with our massage school 00:05:27.45\00:05:29.27 getting it up in running again? Yeah. 00:13:20.05\00:13:21.10 What brought you particularly to Black Hills? 00:13:21.13\00:13:23.78 We had been working in California at a program 00:13:23.81\00:13:27.91 and there was a little bit of a break in that 00:13:27.94\00:13:33.16 and it just happens that Carola 00:13:33.19\00:13:37.55 called and said there is a need in Black Hills, 00:13:37.58\00:13:40.52 would you be interested? 00:13:40.55\00:13:41.62 So I was kind of just one thing led to another 00:13:41.65\00:13:44.20 and so here we are. 00:13:44.23\00:13:47.15 So you knew each other before, Carola? 00:13:47.18\00:13:48.55 Yes. 00:13:48.58\00:13:49.62 I see. I see. So you been there a bit longer? 00:13:49.65\00:13:52.49 At Black Hills, no. I'm just there as a consultant. 00:13:52.52\00:13:55.41 Okay. Okay. 00:13:55.44\00:13:56.60 So you are not stationed at Black Hills per say? 00:13:56.63\00:13:58.91 No. I'm in Grand Junction, Colorado. 00:13:58.95\00:14:02.69 So you just, 00:14:02.72\00:14:03.78 you advised then as they get 00:14:03.81\00:14:05.02 this massage program up in running? 00:14:05.05\00:14:08.04 Exactly. Very, very good. 00:14:08.07\00:14:09.45 Very good. Very good. 00:14:09.48\00:14:10.59 Carola and I have actually 00:14:10.62\00:14:12.70 known each other for quite a number of years. 00:14:12.73\00:14:14.49 If some of listeners remember Charles Thomas 00:14:14.52\00:14:19.69 we had both worked 00:14:19.72\00:14:20.95 at different times with Dr. Thomas 00:14:20.98\00:14:24.35 and that's how we met many years ago. 00:14:24.38\00:14:26.52 I see. Very, very good. 00:14:26.55\00:14:29.51 Let's talk a little bit about this school of massage Carola, 00:14:29.54\00:14:34.91 because as I said when I was there it was still 00:14:34.94\00:14:38.03 and idea that was kind of fresh. 00:14:38.06\00:14:39.35 They wanted to move in to, 00:14:39.38\00:14:40.44 I think they may have had one person on staff 00:14:40.47\00:14:42.58 who had some background. 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.38 Why is that such an integral part 00:14:44.41\00:14:46.12 because for a while we didn't hear about 00:14:46.15\00:14:47.92 massage that much and you mentioned 00:14:47.95\00:14:49.78 there were no Adventist schools teaching it? 00:14:49.81\00:14:51.73 Why is that such an integral part of health 00:14:51.76\00:14:53.78 and why is that important? 00:14:53.81\00:14:55.42 Well, because touch is such an important thing 00:14:55.45\00:14:57.66 and more and more studies are coming out on that now 00:14:57.69\00:15:00.14 even in research 00:15:00.17\00:15:02.44 but touch is a wonderful way to reach hearts to Jesus 00:15:02.47\00:15:06.67 and we've seen that over and over again. 00:15:06.70\00:15:08.96 When you can help somebody and get them out of pain 00:15:08.99\00:15:11.47 and make then feel better 00:15:11.50\00:15:13.27 oh, my, their hearts just open up 00:15:13.30\00:15:15.21 and then will trust you and love you. 00:15:15.24\00:15:17.72 And whatever you have to say they are very open to it. 00:15:17.75\00:15:21.73 Now you obviously have a background, 00:15:21.76\00:15:23.69 where did you learn your technique? 00:15:23.72\00:15:25.56 Where did you study? I initially studied at Weimar. 00:15:25.59\00:15:28.50 I went there as a professional observer 00:15:28.53\00:15:30.42 also a nurse 00:15:30.45\00:15:32.07 and then I ended up going to Dr. Thomas 00:15:32.10\00:15:35.41 and he was my mentor for almost ten years 00:15:35.44\00:15:38.30 and we had the school there 00:15:38.33\00:15:40.33 so I ended up becoming an instructor. 00:15:40.36\00:15:43.13 And after he passed, you know, 00:15:43.16\00:15:44.71 he used to always say, keep the vision. 00:15:44.74\00:15:47.18 And so we wanted to pass on that vision, 00:15:47.21\00:15:49.83 so another graduate and I we started the hands 00:15:49.86\00:15:53.07 on medical massage school out near Loma Linda. 00:15:53.10\00:15:56.02 Because we wanted to continue that 00:15:56.05\00:15:58.08 that vision to show that we could do medical ministry 00:15:58.11\00:16:01.81 and still higher people at a good wage 00:16:01.84\00:16:04.37 and people being happy working in medical ministry 00:16:04.40\00:16:08.26 and giving high quality education. 00:16:08.29\00:16:12.11 Now I want to put some legs on us little bit 00:16:12.14\00:16:13.86 because your background is in nursing, 00:16:13.89\00:16:15.51 Ronda, your background is in nursing also. 00:16:15.54\00:16:18.64 You bring a nursing background to your practice. 00:16:18.67\00:16:23.56 The idea of massage, you know, you think sitting in a chair 00:16:23.59\00:16:26.14 and someone doing your neck kind of thing. 00:16:26.17\00:16:28.11 Is there really a medical benefit 00:16:28.14\00:16:31.47 to massage therapy 00:16:31.50\00:16:33.39 as far as over all health is concerned? 00:16:33.42\00:16:35.32 Wrestle with that for me for just a little bit. 00:16:35.35\00:16:38.07 More than just man, it feels good, you know, 00:16:38.10\00:16:40.98 is there-- 00:16:41.01\00:16:42.05 are you really doing something that has 00:16:42.08\00:16:43.20 long term medical benefit for the patient? 00:16:43.23\00:16:46.30 Absolutely. 00:16:46.33\00:16:47.65 Even when you are combining 00:16:47.68\00:16:48.89 and especially when you are combining 00:16:48.92\00:16:50.64 hydrotherapy with it. 00:16:50.67\00:16:52.62 So we teach hydrotherapy along with the massage 00:16:52.65\00:16:55.49 and it changes a person's well being. 00:16:55.52\00:16:57.61 Even their serotonin levels go up, 00:16:57.64\00:16:59.85 their dopamine levels go up, endorphins go up. 00:16:59.88\00:17:03.42 All those things even on a mind type of thing. 00:17:03.45\00:17:07.06 And hydrotherapy helps with depression, menopause. 00:17:07.09\00:17:12.19 There are so many different simple therapy treatment 00:17:12.22\00:17:15.18 such you can give in like 10-20 minutes 00:17:15.21\00:17:18.23 that can help somebody or teach them 00:17:18.26\00:17:19.93 how to do it themselves. 00:17:19.96\00:17:21.68 And more and more research is going into massage as well. 00:17:21.71\00:17:24.90 Not just with the muscles but also with structure, 00:17:24.93\00:17:28.94 with better breathing, better-- total better wellness, 00:17:28.97\00:17:33.48 even the digestive system. 00:17:33.51\00:17:35.45 When you work on the abdomen 00:17:35.48\00:17:37.22 and you are working in the internal, you know, 00:17:37.25\00:17:40.20 on the internal organs to get rid of it. 00:17:40.23\00:17:42.07 Adhesions, from surgeries 00:17:42.10\00:17:44.75 and a lot of disabilities that people have in pain 00:17:44.78\00:17:47.89 that they have no idea it can be taken away 00:17:47.92\00:17:50.00 with message therapy. 00:17:50.03\00:17:52.38 So I'm able to understand Rich, 00:17:52.41\00:17:55.06 that Black Hills now teaches massage therapy, 00:17:55.09\00:17:57.98 that's part of the curriculum? 00:17:58.01\00:17:59.26 Yes. 00:17:59.29\00:18:00.34 Well, the school of massage is right there on the campus 00:18:00.37\00:18:04.63 and we have a lovely school of massage, 00:18:04.66\00:18:09.03 well equipped and-- so there is a lot to work with. 00:18:09.06\00:18:14.28 Oh, there's a picture on the screen. 00:18:14.31\00:18:15.44 As I recall that's downstairs in-- 00:18:15.47\00:18:18.38 That's right. 00:18:18.41\00:18:19.44 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:19.47\00:18:20.50 I'm trying to go through my mind. 00:18:20.53\00:18:21.56 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:21.59\00:18:22.62 That's right. Yeah, yeah. 00:18:22.65\00:18:23.68 Very, very, very, very-- 00:18:23.71\00:18:24.74 You know, and I wanted to go back 00:18:24.77\00:18:26.44 to Carola mentioned hydrotherapy. 00:18:26.47\00:18:29.14 I had-- personally 00:18:29.17\00:18:30.25 I had a massage practice in Washington State 00:18:30.28\00:18:34.26 and one of I called it my secret weapon 00:18:34.29\00:18:38.70 of doing my massage practice was hydrotherapy. 00:18:38.73\00:18:42.38 I found that using-- 00:18:42.41\00:18:44.86 the use of water really reduces the amount of work 00:18:44.89\00:18:48.07 of a massage therapist 00:18:48.10\00:18:49.27 simply because you get better circulation 00:18:49.30\00:18:51.80 and it just reduce the amount of work that you had to do 00:18:51.83\00:18:54.98 and the results were better. 00:18:55.01\00:18:56.61 So it's really, really, quite powerful. 00:18:56.64\00:18:58.15 No Carola, sort of nodding her head. 00:18:58.18\00:18:59.51 Oh, yeah. I agree with him. 00:18:59.54\00:19:00.57 Yes, obviously it does it. Amazing. 00:19:00.60\00:19:01.87 Now when you say hydrotherapy, 00:19:01.90\00:19:03.88 footbaths, hot baths, immersion baths, 00:19:03.91\00:19:06.16 how you combining the two? 00:19:06.19\00:19:07.33 I'm very curious. I want Carola answer that. 00:19:07.36\00:19:09.64 Yeah, there are salt glows 00:19:09.67\00:19:11.27 like for people going through menopause amazing, 00:19:11.30\00:19:14.42 just for a hot flashes, for those mood swings 00:19:14.45\00:19:18.05 and its simple salt glow that you just rub salt on 00:19:18.08\00:19:21.54 you know, your whole body, you do it in a certain way 00:19:21.57\00:19:24.15 and there is different wraps 00:19:24.18\00:19:25.87 like people who have anxiety attacks, panic attacks, 00:19:25.90\00:19:29.34 those kind of things that we just wrap them up 00:19:29.37\00:19:32.52 and keep them in a wrap for maybe an hour 00:19:32.55\00:19:36.34 and its amazing what happens. 00:19:36.37\00:19:38.39 Even kids, when you give kids a massage for ADD, ADHD 00:19:38.42\00:19:42.99 just amazing how they respond to that. 00:19:43.02\00:19:46.28 They become calmer, they are able to focus 00:19:46.31\00:19:51.04 and they do well in school. 00:19:51.07\00:19:52.97 And we've even had teachers come back and say 00:19:53.00\00:19:55.18 wow, what medication is your boy on? 00:19:55.21\00:19:58.04 And it's like there is no medication 00:19:58.07\00:20:00.49 its just plain massage. 00:20:00.52\00:20:02.57 You wouldn't think that there would be a connection 00:20:02.60\00:20:04.57 between massage and really calming a child down 00:20:04.60\00:20:07.06 that sort of not focused 00:20:07.09\00:20:08.32 and just kind of all over the place, 00:20:08.35\00:20:10.23 that is a wonderful. 00:20:10.26\00:20:11.37 Now, if I wanted to come away with some sort of degree 00:20:11.40\00:20:15.21 or paper in massage therapy 00:20:15.24\00:20:19.12 does Black Hills provide that and how long is the course? 00:20:19.15\00:20:23.61 It's a five and half month course 00:20:23.64\00:20:26.14 and they come away with a certificate 00:20:26.17\00:20:28.52 which they can use to take their MBLEX 00:20:28.55\00:20:31.28 which is a licensing exam. 00:20:31.31\00:20:34.83 So they can go to different states and practice 00:20:34.86\00:20:38.58 and then they are eligible to be to have a career. 00:20:38.61\00:20:42.08 So that's the nice thing. 00:20:42.11\00:20:44.29 Not just a certification but because its state certified 00:20:44.32\00:20:47.71 they are able to work when they are done. 00:20:47.74\00:20:50.29 So they can combine this with medical ministry 00:20:50.32\00:20:53.50 and just really minister to people's needs. 00:20:53.53\00:20:55.68 Because we even teach them how to pray with their clients. 00:20:55.71\00:21:00.29 Oh, praise the Lord. 00:21:00.32\00:21:01.41 That's-- so walk me through this now. 00:21:01.44\00:21:04.43 So I'm a person who comes out of Black Hills 00:21:04.46\00:21:08.14 with certificate in massage therapy 00:21:08.17\00:21:11.17 what knowledge base do they have 00:21:11.20\00:21:13.06 as far as what to do, how to do it, body parts, 00:21:13.09\00:21:15.83 what not to do, what do they know? 00:21:15.86\00:21:19.10 Some other the basic courses are anatomy, physiology, 00:21:19.13\00:21:22.53 pathology. 00:21:22.56\00:21:23.75 So when things go wrong like diabetes and that 00:21:23.78\00:21:26.82 that they study that and know 00:21:26.85\00:21:28.32 how to work with these types of clients. 00:21:28.35\00:21:30.73 Then there is kinesiology 00:21:30.76\00:21:33.15 and on top of all of that is the hands on. 00:21:33.18\00:21:35.75 The Swedish massage, deep tissue, sports massage 00:21:35.78\00:21:39.91 which is a lot of fun and chair massage 00:21:39.94\00:21:43.93 it's just a lot of different higher end. 00:21:43.96\00:21:46.77 lymph massage, myofascial, neuromuscular 00:21:46.80\00:21:50.10 that they will be learning 00:21:50.13\00:21:51.48 so that they can see all different types of patients 00:21:51.51\00:21:54.85 or clients. 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.55 And also we are going to have a variety of instructors. 00:21:56.58\00:22:01.18 So it's not just gonna be one person 00:22:01.21\00:22:03.12 teaching the whole program. 00:22:03.15\00:22:04.72 It will be people who are experts 00:22:04.75\00:22:06.55 in that certain area. 00:22:06.58\00:22:08.31 So say pathology will almost likely have 00:22:08.34\00:22:10.81 either like a medical student or a nurse, 00:22:10.84\00:22:13.56 someone who is professional in that area teaching. 00:22:13.59\00:22:16.54 Same thing with anatomy in physiology 00:22:16.57\00:22:18.55 we have a physician who is teaching that. 00:22:18.58\00:22:21.39 Okay. 00:22:21.42\00:22:22.45 So lots of different instructors, 00:22:22.48\00:22:24.73 so it makes it more interesting to the students. 00:22:24.76\00:22:27.79 In that way the program doesn't just fold 00:22:27.82\00:22:30.45 if one person walks away. 00:22:30.48\00:22:31.96 I see. I see. 00:22:31.99\00:22:33.05 So as a consultant what are you trying to get the people 00:22:33.08\00:22:36.91 or the-- at Black Hills 00:22:36.94\00:22:38.37 to try to understand or to put into place 00:22:38.40\00:22:40.09 so that this is an effective course? 00:22:40.12\00:22:42.29 Well, we are trying to get all the instructors into place. 00:22:42.32\00:22:45.10 We have a coordinator Bethany who is just awesome, 00:22:45.13\00:22:49.85 that's gonna be in touch with the students. 00:22:49.88\00:22:51.84 So when the students call in 00:22:51.87\00:22:53.67 that's who they will be talking to. 00:22:53.70\00:22:55.79 And so she will help to make sure 00:22:55.82\00:22:57.33 that the instructor show up and the students 00:22:57.36\00:23:00.86 and the students will be wearing scrubs 00:23:00.89\00:23:03.17 so that's their uniform 00:23:03.20\00:23:04.48 and then when they go out in the community 00:23:04.51\00:23:06.12 and that's something that we really want to do 00:23:06.15\00:23:08.53 is get them in the community doing chair massage 00:23:08.56\00:23:11.77 and working at sports events. 00:23:11.80\00:23:14.00 So this way we get them out in the community 00:23:14.03\00:23:16.60 and bring the community back to Black Hills 00:23:16.63\00:23:20.21 and to see, you know, the professionalism, 00:23:20.24\00:23:23.67 the high education, quality, 00:23:23.70\00:23:26.68 you know, that set these institutions. 00:23:26.71\00:23:28.33 So hands on is an integral part of the curriculum? 00:23:28.36\00:23:31.65 Absolutely. 00:23:31.68\00:23:32.71 Lots of hands on, lots of experience. 00:23:32.74\00:23:35.36 We are also gonna have a clinic. 00:23:35.39\00:23:37.42 So it's a community clinic where they pay 00:23:37.45\00:23:40.32 or their charge maybe $25-$30 for a treatment 00:23:40.35\00:23:44.24 which most people can afford and the community comes in 00:23:44.27\00:23:48.04 and it becomes like a family which is really nice. 00:23:48.07\00:23:50.91 Yeah. Yeah. 00:23:50.94\00:23:51.97 And then they get low cost treatments 00:23:52.00\00:23:54.08 and are able to tell other people about it. 00:23:54.11\00:23:56.32 I like the idea that Black Hills gets to interface 00:23:56.35\00:23:58.70 with the community by doing this. 00:23:58.73\00:24:00.15 Now I need to ask you Mr. Development guy, 00:24:00.18\00:24:02.72 is there a market for, are there a lot of people 00:24:02.75\00:24:06.25 who want to learn these techniques? 00:24:06.28\00:24:08.05 Yes. Yes. 00:24:08.08\00:24:09.12 Yeah. 00:24:09.15\00:24:10.51 I would say absolutely. 00:24:10.54\00:24:12.54 Massage is a-- its been around forever 00:24:12.57\00:24:16.10 but it is a ever expanding industry 00:24:16.13\00:24:20.65 and you just hear more and more about it 00:24:20.68\00:24:23.43 and of course you have so many different methods 00:24:23.46\00:24:27.34 that you can what you want to do 00:24:27.37\00:24:29.05 I call it a fluffy massage 00:24:29.08\00:24:30.27 which will be a Swedish massage, 00:24:30.30\00:24:31.82 which is that feel good that you are talking about. 00:24:31.85\00:24:33.65 Yeah. Yeah. 00:24:33.68\00:24:35.14 But if you want to do more therapeutic 00:24:35.17\00:24:38.24 that's, you know, it's great 00:24:38.27\00:24:40.03 because we offer not just Swedish 00:24:40.06\00:24:43.47 but more specific massages 00:24:43.50\00:24:45.76 and you can go out and start your own practice 00:24:45.79\00:24:49.21 or you can work for somebody else. 00:24:49.24\00:24:51.58 Its just really very-- 00:24:51.61\00:24:55.69 there's so many ways you could go. 00:24:55.72\00:24:57.37 And as I was going that so that you're training people 00:24:57.40\00:25:00.27 so that when they leave they've got a marketable skill 00:25:00.30\00:25:03.02 that they can take and earn money. 00:25:03.05\00:25:04.42 I mean, this is not something like where you got this degree 00:25:04.45\00:25:06.18 and you can't do anything with it. 00:25:06.21\00:25:07.49 There is a need out there and a call out there 00:25:07.52\00:25:09.73 and a desire for this kind of skill. 00:25:09.76\00:25:11.57 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:28:02.59\00:28:06.62 Now, I assume there I went out as a speaker 00:28:06.65\00:28:09.23 for the camp meeting 00:28:09.26\00:28:10.53 but I said since I'm here and my wife and I are both here 00:28:10.56\00:28:13.51 we might as well immerse ourselves into the program. 00:28:13.54\00:28:16.29 You know, so we kind of jumped into the boot camp 00:28:16.32\00:28:19.37 and other thing 00:28:19.40\00:28:20.49 but I found it very refreshing 00:28:20.52\00:28:22.99 and in talking with the people who were there. 00:28:23.02\00:28:25.17 And maybe we need to talk about this, 00:28:25.20\00:28:26.79 what are the kinds of I'll use patients of clients that come? 00:28:26.82\00:28:31.92 Is there anyone that is too sick to take, 00:28:31.95\00:28:34.27 are you looking for a specific kinds of things to heal. 00:28:34.30\00:28:36.82 You take whatever comes? 00:28:36.85\00:28:37.88 Walk me through the mindset of the people 00:28:37.91\00:28:39.89 that come to Black Hills. 00:28:39.92\00:28:41.72 Well, the only real restriction we have 00:28:41.75\00:28:44.83 is they have to be able to walk or take care of themselves. 00:28:44.86\00:28:51.83 But we get all kinds of problems, 00:28:51.86\00:28:56.28 common ones are like heart diseases, hypertension, 00:28:56.31\00:28:58.91 diabetes, 00:28:58.94\00:28:59.99 but arthritis, muscular skeletal problems, 00:29:00.02\00:29:05.05 depression is becoming much more of a diagnosis 00:29:05.08\00:29:09.87 that we see even though it can be right along 00:29:09.90\00:29:12.04 with all the other medical problems. 00:29:12.07\00:29:15.90 We also have some health coaches 00:29:15.93\00:29:20.55 that help spiritually and mentally 00:29:20.58\00:29:23.49 and we have seen wonderful things 00:29:23.52\00:29:25.60 happen with that. 00:29:25.63\00:29:26.67 They are helping you to find tools 00:29:26.70\00:29:31.25 that help you to deal with mental or emotional problems, 00:29:31.28\00:29:35.34 depression, anything like that. 00:29:35.37\00:29:38.00 It's just amazing to see how the simple principles 00:29:38.03\00:29:42.63 that God has give us work 00:29:42.66\00:29:44.41 not only physically 00:29:44.44\00:29:45.47 but mentally and emotionally as well. 00:29:45.50\00:29:49.12 That's-- 00:29:49.15\00:29:50.18 You weave into your treatment. 00:29:50.21\00:29:54.79 The idea and I've heard it 00:29:54.82\00:29:57.71 all three you sort of allude to it. 00:29:57.74\00:29:59.89 There is a spiritual component 00:30:00.66\00:30:01.91 that under guards all that you do. 00:30:01.94\00:30:03.60 So when a person comes they are gonna get 00:30:03.63\00:30:06.19 quality medical care 00:30:06.22\00:30:08.28 but there is also a spiritual component 00:30:08.31\00:30:11.72 that filters its way into all of that. 00:30:11.75\00:30:13.56 What if a person is opposed to that? 00:30:13.59\00:30:17.26 I just want to get well. 00:30:17.29\00:30:18.32 I got depressed, I got this, 00:30:18.35\00:30:20.90 I don't really see a need for that. 00:30:20.93\00:30:22.82 How do you address a person that comes with that mindset? 00:30:22.85\00:30:26.22 We respect that. 00:30:26.25\00:30:28.82 You know, there is, like there is a thought for the day 00:30:28.85\00:30:31.60 which is spiritual 00:30:31.63\00:30:33.14 but if they don't want to attend that that's fine. 00:30:33.17\00:30:36.39 We respect people from any belief system 00:30:36.42\00:30:40.43 and you know, we feel that 00:30:40.46\00:30:43.65 they are gonna get a better benefit 00:30:43.68\00:30:45.72 if they have the spiritual component as well 00:30:45.75\00:30:48.89 but that is their choice. 00:30:48.92\00:30:50.74 I would rather suspect though 00:30:50.77\00:30:51.96 that you don't get many with that kind of mindset 00:30:51.99\00:30:54.21 because the fact is that they are coming to you 00:30:54.24\00:30:56.06 and this is what you do. 00:30:56.09\00:30:57.60 They are kind of open to that. 00:30:57.63\00:30:58.72 Yes. Yeah. 00:30:58.75\00:30:59.79 Yeah. At least open to it. 00:30:59.82\00:31:02.04 Is there any particular reason 00:31:02.07\00:31:03.72 why an 18 day that number fits or works, 00:31:03.75\00:31:07.77 that seems to be the optimal number. 00:31:07.80\00:31:10.61 There are shorter programs but 18 as supposed to 30 days 00:31:10.64\00:31:13.41 or 60 days or 90 that seems to be a good fit 00:31:13.44\00:31:16.54 for health and for development. 00:31:16.57\00:31:19.07 Well, a couple of things are probably involved. 00:31:19.10\00:31:21.55 Number one, people can't take such a huge amount of time out 00:31:21.58\00:31:25.12 from work so you try to make you know, fit into that. 00:31:25.15\00:31:28.80 But also it takes a while to actually 00:31:28.83\00:31:34.24 change your lifestyle and see those changes affect, 00:31:34.27\00:31:38.89 how you feel and that kind of thing. 00:31:38.92\00:31:40.60 Actually they feel pretty good 00:31:40.63\00:31:42.44 usually within a short amount of time 00:31:42.47\00:31:44.40 but that helps you to feel like comfortable enough 00:31:44.43\00:31:49.29 with the habits that you can go home 00:31:49.32\00:31:51.32 and do this at home and that's the important thing. 00:31:51.35\00:31:54.83 Because if you just come for 18 days, 00:31:54.86\00:31:57.67 you know, may have been a nice pleasant 18 days 00:31:57.70\00:32:00.22 but really what counts is 00:32:00.25\00:32:01.86 what you do with it when you go home. 00:32:01.89\00:32:03.60 And that's what we are trying to teach them 00:32:03.63\00:32:05.65 and having grained into their lifestyle is-- 00:32:05.68\00:32:08.99 these are the things 00:32:09.02\00:32:10.05 that are gonna help you feel better 00:32:10.08\00:32:11.11 for the rest of your life. 00:32:11.14\00:32:13.61 So you are trying to put in things 00:32:13.64\00:32:14.81 that they can't it's not go in Hawaii 00:32:14.84\00:32:16.86 then you forgot about when you get out. 00:32:16.89\00:32:18.13 We need you to carry on 00:32:18.16\00:32:19.54 and I suspect that's an important part 00:32:19.57\00:32:21.55 of what you try to teach them that 00:32:21.58\00:32:22.80 it does no good to just come here 00:32:22.83\00:32:25.25 and 18 days of this regiment and then go home 00:32:25.28\00:32:28.23 and return back to your old life. 00:32:28.26\00:32:29.48 Exactly. Yeah. 00:32:29.51\00:32:30.94 Very true, yes. Very good. 00:32:30.97\00:32:32.92 Most of clients are referred to word of mouth, 00:32:32.95\00:32:36.91 how do you get the people that come? 00:32:36.94\00:32:39.21 Some people just go on the internet 00:32:39.24\00:32:40.80 and find us there, 00:32:40.83\00:32:43.93 others word of mouth. 00:32:43.96\00:32:45.27 People that have been there say, oh, yeah, you know, 00:32:45.30\00:32:47.54 this is where you need to be. 00:32:47.57\00:32:48.76 Anyway that they just call us and we work through them 00:32:50.72\00:32:53.83 the process of helping them get there. 00:32:53.86\00:32:57.90 They could maybe even watch 3ABN. 00:32:57.93\00:33:00.16 Oh, you think? Praise the Lord. 00:33:02.19\00:33:04.13 I want to talk about a couple things 00:33:04.16\00:33:05.50 because when we talk about a place like Black Hills 00:33:05.54\00:33:08.44 you have doctors there. 00:33:08.47\00:33:11.17 I mean, this is not-- 00:33:11.20\00:33:12.58 you both have nursing background 00:33:12.61\00:33:13.95 so we've got medical care at that level 00:33:13.98\00:33:16.18 but there are doctors and physicians there 00:33:16.21\00:33:17.91 who are part of the overall treatment, are they not? 00:33:17.94\00:33:20.13 Yes, and they see the doctor once or twice a week. 00:33:20.16\00:33:24.17 We do lab tests when they come in 00:33:24.20\00:33:26.17 and also when they leave. 00:33:26.20\00:33:27.70 Also the 18 day program is what we call the full medical. 00:33:27.73\00:33:33.10 That means they see the doctor, 00:33:33.13\00:33:34.84 have the lab tests, you know, all the other things as well. 00:33:34.87\00:33:39.07 And then we have a mini medical 00:33:39.10\00:33:41.71 which we allow people to go into it 00:33:41.74\00:33:45.12 that don't necessarily need the supervision of the doctor. 00:33:45.15\00:33:48.75 We check them when they come in, 00:33:48.78\00:33:50.04 we do some lab work and things like that 00:33:50.07\00:33:51.93 but they don't have health issues 00:33:51.96\00:33:55.85 that they are really needing a doctors continued care. 00:33:55.88\00:33:59.35 And then we have a tune-up program 00:33:59.38\00:34:02.02 which is for those 00:34:02.05\00:34:03.21 who really don't have any health issues. 00:34:03.24\00:34:05.49 They just want to have a healthy vacation 00:34:05.52\00:34:09.62 or learn how to stay healthy, 00:34:09.91\00:34:15.35 you know, and just want some relaxing time away. 00:34:15.38\00:34:18.76 We keep them busy but-- 00:34:18.79\00:34:20.00 Yeah. Yeah. 00:34:20.03\00:34:21.06 So there is different things. 00:34:21.50\00:34:22.74 Let me ask you one of those kind of 00:34:22.77\00:34:24.38 high concept on to logical questions 00:34:24.41\00:34:26.39 we threw out every now and then. 00:34:26.42\00:34:28.47 We live in a world where people want, 00:34:28.50\00:34:30.19 they want it they want it now. 00:34:30.23\00:34:31.81 Give me a pill in the morning I want this to be gone. 00:34:33.42\00:34:36.68 Why would a person come to Black Hills? 00:34:36.71\00:34:40.22 You know, I'm trying to figure the mindset 00:34:40.25\00:34:43.68 that of the things that you have to offer. 00:34:43.71\00:34:45.69 Go to your local hospital, go to your local gym, 00:34:46.54\00:34:48.75 why would a person stop their routine, 00:34:50.24\00:34:52.57 put their life on hold and come to Black Hills? 00:34:52.60\00:34:55.11 What is it about Black Hills that would say 00:34:55.14\00:34:57.62 you need to be here because 00:34:57.65\00:34:59.62 we are doing something different than just 00:34:59.65\00:35:02.08 running to your doctor 00:35:02.11\00:35:03.14 or running to a CVS and getting a pill? 00:35:03.17\00:35:05.05 What is it about Black Hills that would draw a person 00:35:05.08\00:35:07.54 and then give them something of value 00:35:07.57\00:35:09.42 that may affect the rest of their lives? 00:35:09.45\00:35:10.85 Well, you know, have you heard of epigenetic? 00:35:10.98\00:35:15.28 It's something that's relatively new. 00:35:15.31\00:35:17.54 I mean, its been around for a few years but 00:35:17.57\00:35:21.44 they are studying the fact that our genes, 00:35:21.47\00:35:25.11 you know, we sometimes think that 00:35:25.14\00:35:26.48 well, I've just got bad genes that's' the reason 00:35:26.51\00:35:28.56 I've got all these health issues. 00:35:28.59\00:35:30.85 But actually they are discovering 00:35:30.88\00:35:32.77 more and more that our genes 00:35:32.80\00:35:35.39 its like they say the heredity loads the gun 00:35:37.11\00:35:42.12 but lifestyle pulls the trigger and really they have found 00:35:42.15\00:35:47.13 that about 70 percent of our health 00:35:47.16\00:35:49.99 is determined by the lifestyle that we live. 00:35:50.02\00:35:52.90 What we eat, what we exercise, the stress all these things 00:35:52.93\00:35:57.12 make a huge different much more than our genes. 00:35:57.32\00:36:01.09 Because the lifestyle you can have a gene 00:36:01.12\00:36:04.55 that says you are going to-- in your family 00:36:04.58\00:36:06.89 they are gonna have high cholesterol 00:36:06.92\00:36:08.86 or diabetes or whatever 00:36:08.89\00:36:11.54 but you can turn that gene off 00:36:11.57\00:36:15.65 through lifestyle. 00:36:15.68\00:36:17.70 So it's really the most important component 00:36:17.73\00:36:21.82 of being healthy 00:36:21.85\00:36:22.88 is what you are doing in your lifestyle 00:36:22.91\00:36:25.14 and that's exciting because we can change that. 00:36:25.17\00:36:27.88 We can't change your genes 00:36:27.91\00:36:29.85 but we can change which of those are expressed. 00:36:29.88\00:36:32.78 Turned on so to speak. 00:36:32.81\00:36:34.00 Yeah. I like it. 00:36:34.03\00:36:35.06 Well, and what is exciting not to over use that word 00:36:35.09\00:36:39.08 but the fact that science is actually 00:36:39.11\00:36:40.90 able to study that now 00:36:40.93\00:36:42.40 and watch those often on switches 00:36:42.43\00:36:45.58 as we change our lifestyle 00:36:45.61\00:36:47.29 and the corrections in our health. 00:36:47.32\00:36:49.23 So its really very fascinating feel 00:36:49.26\00:36:52.76 that is growing by leaps and bounds. 00:36:52.79\00:36:54.80 The picture that I'm getting and what makes a Black Hills 00:36:54.83\00:36:57.81 so necessary is that we need time to get, 00:36:57.84\00:37:03.07 to use a phrase into your head 00:37:03.10\00:37:05.40 because what's going in your head 00:37:05.43\00:37:06.62 is gonna affect your body. 00:37:06.65\00:37:07.68 So we need to pull you out of your nine to five, 00:37:07.71\00:37:10.34 your work a day, get you away from that 00:37:10.37\00:37:12.67 so we can rearrange what's happening here 00:37:12.70\00:37:15.48 so then you can change what's happening here. 00:37:15.51\00:37:18.09 Is that kind of what we are going with this? 00:37:18.12\00:37:19.61 Yes, absolutely. 00:37:19.64\00:37:20.67 And you know there are environment 00:37:20.70\00:37:22.82 whenever you go there 00:37:22.86\00:37:24.94 is absolutely, it's so beautiful. 00:37:24.97\00:37:27.41 You just walk on 00:37:27.44\00:37:28.83 and here is this beauty that you just, 00:37:28.86\00:37:32.90 you can't help but take a great big deep breath 00:37:32.93\00:37:34.95 and relax. 00:37:34.98\00:37:36.38 And we hear that comment frequently. 00:37:36.41\00:37:38.65 You look in the picture Black Hills 00:37:38.68\00:37:40.06 is a surpassing beautiful place. 00:37:40.09\00:37:42.11 As I said like you-- 00:37:42.14\00:37:43.89 we drove in at night and it was just pitch black 00:37:43.92\00:37:46.45 and you just kind of, 00:37:46.48\00:37:47.99 you can see as far as the headlights take you 00:37:48.02\00:37:50.00 but when the sun comes up you are into this beauty 00:37:50.03\00:37:51.99 and I must say that I'm an New York city guy 00:37:52.02\00:37:53.69 but that environment is got to be conducive 00:37:53.80\00:37:55.99 to some kind of growth in your heart 00:37:56.02\00:37:58.57 and in your mind because its just-- 00:37:58.60\00:37:59.79 you are in nature, 00:37:59.82\00:38:00.85 you are out there and its just beautiful. 00:38:00.88\00:38:02.25 It really is. 00:38:02.28\00:38:03.31 Yeah, the two pictures we just saw 00:38:03.34\00:38:05.55 one was taken from Inspiration Point 00:38:05.58\00:38:10.12 which is upon one of those cliffs, 00:38:10.15\00:38:11.78 one of those cliffs and overlooks the valley 00:38:11.81\00:38:14.15 and that was just one little segment 00:38:14.18\00:38:16.00 that you can see on Inspiration Point 00:38:16.03\00:38:19.12 and but the valley is quite long. 00:38:19.15\00:38:21.45 Then the other picture was Battle Creek. 00:38:21.99\00:38:25.10 And Battle Creek has nothing to do with Battle Creek 00:38:25.13\00:38:27.66 that we understand that to do 00:38:27.69\00:38:29.97 with the local Indian population there. 00:38:30.00\00:38:33.52 How they had their skirmishes next to that creek. 00:38:33.55\00:38:35.87 Yeah. Yeah. So lot of history. 00:38:35.90\00:38:37.33 Really, really, when we took out walk 00:38:37.36\00:38:39.29 and we went through forest, we went through kind of meadow, 00:38:39.32\00:38:42.02 we went over big rocks, we did rushing water, 00:38:42.05\00:38:45.43 there's all different kinds of terrain 00:38:45.46\00:38:47.01 within just a few miles and you can diverse 00:38:47.04\00:38:49.99 and it was really, really, just a refreshing time. 00:38:50.02\00:38:52.50 Well, you know, what, 00:38:52.53\00:38:53.94 its kind of fun, its kind of a side 00:38:53.97\00:38:56.04 from what we are doing on campus there 00:38:56.07\00:38:58.16 but we have, we are in such a historical area 00:38:58.19\00:39:01.02 with Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse 00:39:01.05\00:39:03.61 and it just goes on and on. 00:39:03.64\00:39:05.14 That's one of the fun things we get to do on a weekends. 00:39:05.17\00:39:07.82 Yes. Yes. Yeah. 00:39:07.85\00:39:09.25 We have two weekends and on both Sabbath and Sunday 00:39:09.28\00:39:12.96 we do day appropriate things for those 00:39:13.87\00:39:16.97 and so people get to come and get better health 00:39:17.00\00:39:20.36 and go see one of the most spectacular 00:39:20.39\00:39:22.26 manmade things of Mount Rushmore. 00:39:22.29\00:39:23.95 Literally I think its 13 or 14 miles down the road 00:39:24.35\00:39:28.07 so a real easy drive and then just so real beauty. 00:39:28.10\00:39:32.15 Yeah, I remember being in church Sabbath morning 00:39:32.18\00:39:33.90 and then Sabbath afternoon out in nature 00:39:33.93\00:39:35.97 and then Sunday we went back and actually, 00:39:36.00\00:39:37.71 you know, the Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore kind of thing. 00:39:37.74\00:39:40.47 And then we herds of buffalo and kind of thing. 00:39:40.50\00:39:42.29 Its just it's for a person who spend a lot of time in city 00:39:42.32\00:39:45.69 breathing second-hand air and smoke everything else so, 00:39:45.72\00:39:48.62 get out there and to be in nature 00:39:48.65\00:39:50.36 and to see those things. 00:39:50.39\00:39:51.42 I think there is something that does on in your heart, 00:39:51.45\00:39:53.23 in your soul just being in nature 00:39:53.26\00:39:54.93 and breathing the air. 00:39:54.96\00:39:56.23 And being part of that experience. 00:39:56.26\00:39:57.43 Yeah. Yes. 00:39:57.46\00:39:58.84 Then you get a good massage, you know. 00:39:58.87\00:40:02.34 That's a good stuff. How can you leave it? 00:40:02.37\00:40:06.29 Before our time gets over 00:40:06.32\00:40:07.35 and I'm looking at the back end of my notes here, 00:40:07.38\00:40:09.35 you got some actual miracle stories. 00:40:09.38\00:40:12.21 This of the-- 00:40:12.24\00:40:13.27 I mean, you got some proof that this kind of thing works. 00:40:13.30\00:40:15.67 You mentioned, I see a young boy with ADHA 00:40:17.64\00:40:21.22 and I mean, medical sciences said 00:40:21.25\00:40:23.81 the only way to deal with that innocent 00:40:23.84\00:40:25.18 is dope him up or give him some kind of pill 00:40:25.21\00:40:27.02 or something but obviously 00:40:27.05\00:40:28.08 there are other ways to kind of tackle that. 00:40:28.11\00:40:30.45 Are they not? 00:40:30.48\00:40:32.43 Well, even in our clinic or student clinic 00:40:32.46\00:40:35.05 that we used to have in Southern California 00:40:35.08\00:40:37.01 we had a young boy came 00:40:37.04\00:40:38.26 and took the place of his father. 00:40:38.29\00:40:40.06 And as long as the parents are there 00:40:40.09\00:40:42.31 we can work on the minor. 00:40:42.34\00:40:43.84 And so the mother was there 00:40:43.87\00:40:46.05 and she told us little bit about her son having 00:40:46.08\00:40:49.05 always sleep disorders and not doing well in school 00:40:49.08\00:40:52.65 and in being in the lower classes 00:40:52.68\00:40:55.14 and she was very concerned 00:40:55.17\00:40:57.76 and they kept telling her, get him on riddling, 00:40:57.79\00:40:59.84 get him on these medications and she says no, 00:40:59.87\00:41:02.90 I'm not gonna do that. 00:41:02.93\00:41:04.06 Then he came to clinic 00:41:04.24\00:41:05.39 and took his father's place for massage 00:41:05.42\00:41:08.47 and all he got was just a Swedish massage 00:41:08.50\00:41:11.60 and then he went back to school the next day 00:41:11.63\00:41:13.62 and the instructor said or the teacher said, 00:41:13.65\00:41:16.54 what medication did you put your boy no. 00:41:16.57\00:41:18.79 It's working wonderfully. 00:41:18.82\00:41:20.80 And so she got to thinking and she is like well, 00:41:20.83\00:41:23.15 the only thing is he had a massage last night. 00:41:23.18\00:41:26.32 And so he continued to come back 00:41:26.35\00:41:28.23 and I saw him recently and he is a big boy now 00:41:28.26\00:41:31.90 and he went up in his classes and just went to a, 00:41:31.93\00:41:36.40 you know, ended up being in the normal classes 00:41:36.43\00:41:38.77 and doing well. 00:41:38.80\00:41:39.89 Praise the Lord. Praise God. Praise God. 00:41:39.92\00:41:41.88 Some of these things, you know, the outworking of just 00:41:42.91\00:41:46.95 bad eating habits or bad living habits. 00:41:46.98\00:41:49.15 Do you see those kind of dramatic changes 00:41:49.18\00:41:50.87 in that 18 day period? 00:41:50.90\00:41:52.12 Yes. 00:41:52.15\00:41:53.18 You know, everything from losing weight 00:41:53.21\00:41:55.12 to lowering the cholesterol, the blood pressure, 00:41:55.15\00:41:58.65 of course when they exercise too 00:41:58.68\00:42:01.64 and that's really helpful. 00:42:01.67\00:42:02.70 But all of that combined it's a plant based diet 00:42:02.73\00:42:06.25 and its just amazing 00:42:06.28\00:42:09.29 the results we see in the lab work. 00:42:09.32\00:42:10.96 I mean, which is something objective that you can see, 00:42:10.99\00:42:13.96 you know, it was here 00:42:13.99\00:42:15.02 and it went down 55 points or whatever. 00:42:15.05\00:42:18.19 And it's pretty convincing. 00:42:18.22\00:42:21.18 I mean, we work in this and so we see it all the time 00:42:21.21\00:42:24.85 and it kind of gets like old hat. 00:42:24.88\00:42:26.24 That's yeah, that's what we expect. 00:42:26.27\00:42:27.95 If you forget the miracle that really is then 00:42:28.66\00:42:31.40 you know, that God has made us. 00:42:31.43\00:42:33.56 If we eat right and take care of our bodies 00:42:33.59\00:42:36.91 that we don't have to 00:42:36.94\00:42:39.22 go through all the pain and suffering. 00:42:39.25\00:42:43.13 So obviously you get the anecdotal evidence 00:42:43.16\00:42:45.63 oh, boy, I feel better but you also got the metrics 00:42:45.66\00:42:47.42 to you got some hard facts in front of that. 00:42:47.45\00:42:49.64 You do A,B,C,D this is gonna happen. 00:42:49.67\00:42:51.83 Yeah. And you see that. 00:42:51.86\00:42:52.89 I mean, everybody is, everybody is little different 00:42:52.92\00:42:54.99 and genes does play into it 00:42:55.02\00:42:57.45 but you know, you can improve it 00:42:57.48\00:43:00.15 even with bad genes or whatever. 00:43:00.18\00:43:02.67 And often times its not everything like I said 00:43:02.70\00:43:05.74 that happens in the 18 days 00:43:05.77\00:43:08.16 sometimes things really progress after you leave. 00:43:08.19\00:43:11.70 So it's a combination of we see amazing things there 00:43:11.73\00:43:15.10 but for some people it takes little longer. 00:43:15.13\00:43:17.27 Depending on how long they have had a bad lifestyle 00:43:17.30\00:43:21.13 you know, sometimes it takes little longer 00:43:21.16\00:43:23.08 to get things moving in the right direction. 00:43:23.11\00:43:25.27 Praise the Lord. Praise God. 00:43:25.30\00:43:26.89 That is very, very excited, exciting rather. 00:43:26.92\00:43:30.65 Do people as their health gets better 00:43:32.67\00:43:36.32 do you have incidents 00:43:36.35\00:43:37.59 when they do get a better hold on Jesus, 00:43:37.62\00:43:39.69 on who He is. 00:43:39.72\00:43:40.81 Do you see that happen also? 00:43:40.84\00:43:42.15 Yes. Very much so. 00:43:42.18\00:43:44.35 You know, it's amazing how when people start 00:43:44.38\00:43:46.60 feeling better their priorities change. 00:43:46.63\00:43:49.52 They start seeing things different and they say, wow. 00:43:49.55\00:43:55.03 You know, this is amazing. 00:43:55.06\00:43:56.68 If God told us how to do things physically to make us healthy, 00:43:56.71\00:44:01.07 you know, let's see what else He says. 00:44:01.10\00:44:02.70 I mean, it's just a natural reaction 00:44:02.73\00:44:04.95 that happens. 00:44:04.98\00:44:06.39 It's quite amazing to people's spiritual changes as well. 00:44:06.42\00:44:09.80 And they have time to stop and think. 00:44:09.83\00:44:12.16 You know, we are so busy sometimes 00:44:12.19\00:44:14.19 in life that we don't have time to stop and think 00:44:14.22\00:44:17.54 about really what are my priorities 00:44:17.57\00:44:19.64 and where do I want to go, what I want to do 00:44:19.67\00:44:22.54 and so when they have time to and feel better they really-- 00:44:22.57\00:44:26.89 it's just a life changing experience really. 00:44:26.92\00:44:29.24 Praise the Lord. 00:44:29.27\00:44:30.30 I found and I don't know 00:44:30.33\00:44:31.44 if it was something you guys did or it just, 00:44:31.47\00:44:33.87 my cell phone does not always work, 00:44:33.90\00:44:36.15 did not always work at Black Hills. 00:44:36.18\00:44:37.21 Yeah. 00:44:37.24\00:44:38.27 I don't know if that providential or-- 00:44:39.85\00:44:41.14 Yeah, we're gonna say it's a God thing 00:44:41.17\00:44:42.97 but a place that I could not get a signal 00:44:43.00\00:44:45.69 and I said, maybe not if the Lord is doing something. 00:44:45.72\00:44:47.98 Praise the Lord.
