Yeah. 00:04:06.88\00:04:08.21 That's a great story. 00:04:08.24\00:04:09.58 So you carved some territory, man, 00:04:09.61\00:04:10.95 we have Michigan, Florida, every time you talk 00:04:10.98\00:04:13.92 I hear another state thrown in that. 00:04:13.95\00:04:16.69 You've been around a little bit, 00:04:16.72\00:04:18.05 but in education I guess for a little while. 00:04:18.09\00:04:20.19 Yes. Praise the Lord. 00:04:20.22\00:04:22.29 Larry, same question, Adventist home growing up? 00:04:22.32\00:04:25.49 Most all my life. 00:04:25.53\00:04:26.86 Uh-huh. 00:04:26.90\00:04:28.23 A lifer, I like that preamble. 00:04:28.26\00:04:29.90 We praise the Lord for that. 00:04:29.93\00:04:31.27 How did you get connected with Christian Record Services? 00:04:31.30\00:04:34.27 Well, I don't know if I should say this or not 00:04:34.30\00:04:36.20 but I had a neighbor 00:04:36.24\00:04:38.37 that was a rep for Christian Record Services 00:04:38.41\00:04:41.68 and he wanted to go into the gospel ministry 00:04:41.71\00:04:44.55 and so he wanted to get out of Christian Record 00:04:44.58\00:04:46.78 for some reason, I couldn't figure it out 00:04:46.82\00:04:48.62 but and so he says Larry, 00:04:48.65\00:04:50.99 he didn't want to-- 00:04:51.02\00:04:52.35 He didn't want to go without replacing himself 00:04:52.39\00:04:56.22 so he says, "Larry, you need to take my place." 00:04:56.26\00:04:59.59 And so I kind of didn't know, 00:04:59.63\00:05:03.63 you know, because 00:05:03.67\00:05:05.00 I was literature evangelist for over 25 years. 00:05:05.03\00:05:08.00 I just thought that probably 00:05:08.04\00:05:09.80 I'd be a literature evangelist the rest of my life. 00:05:09.84\00:05:13.21 But I did apply, and so they accepted me 00:05:13.24\00:05:16.54 and here I am for 20 years now. 00:05:16.58\00:05:18.61 Wow. Praise the Lord. 00:05:18.65\00:05:19.98 I have great respect for literature evangelist. 00:05:20.02\00:05:23.52 When I was working on my theology degree, 00:05:23.55\00:05:25.45 we had to spent some part of our vacation, 00:05:25.49\00:05:29.26 winter break, spring break or all summer 00:05:29.29\00:05:31.89 doing canvassing work they call it back then, 00:05:31.93\00:05:34.56 just you could have the flavor, and I got the flavor 00:05:34.60\00:05:37.17 and I still got that taste in my mouth, I can't-- 00:05:37.20\00:05:38.53 Oh, yeah. 00:05:38.57\00:05:40.20 Dismal failure. 00:05:40.24\00:05:42.30 I just couldn't do any good. 00:05:42.34\00:05:45.04 First of all I'm a sucker for a hard luck story, 00:05:45.07\00:05:47.34 so I would just give the book 00:05:47.38\00:05:48.71 where you got to place that money. 00:05:48.74\00:05:50.08 You know, if we're giving stuff away 00:05:50.11\00:05:51.75 and taken out of your pocket, you can't make any money 00:05:51.78\00:05:54.05 so, and I think I have a rejection phobia, 00:05:54.08\00:05:56.95 when you give your canvas, the person says no, 00:05:56.99\00:05:59.39 just don't want to bothered. 00:05:59.42\00:06:01.56 It's not my cup of tea 00:06:01.59\00:06:02.96 but I have great respect for those who make a living 00:06:02.99\00:06:06.26 and who do well at selling literature, 00:06:06.29\00:06:08.90 but I can pass out literature and give it away 00:06:08.93\00:06:10.93 but that selling part 00:06:10.97\00:06:12.30 that I seem to have a problem with it. 00:06:12.33\00:06:13.67 So you get along with Christian Record 00:06:13.70\00:06:15.27 very well because that's what we do. 00:06:15.30\00:06:18.47 We give all of the reading material 00:06:18.51\00:06:20.74 and I have every book plus a lot more 00:06:20.78\00:06:25.15 than I had when I was a literature evangelist. 00:06:25.18\00:06:29.22 Praise the Lord. Good deal. 00:06:29.25\00:06:31.52 Brother Collin? 00:06:31.55\00:06:33.05 I may help you. 00:06:33.09\00:06:36.79 Give me a little background? Where are you from? 00:06:36.83\00:06:38.39 I'm from the little town called Grand Ledge, Michigan 00:06:38.43\00:06:42.13 and I grew up in a big family actually, 00:06:42.16\00:06:45.50 loving parents. 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.77 And you said you wanted to know 00:06:47.80\00:06:49.14 how many family members I had, right? 00:06:49.17\00:06:50.51 Yeah. Two six. 00:06:58.91\00:07:02.65 Two six. 00:07:02.68\00:07:04.02 My soul. 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.45 And I say in Spanish-- 00:07:05.49\00:07:07.39 Yeah. 00:07:07.42\00:07:08.76 Now where are you in that number, 00:07:08.79\00:07:10.13 do you know? 00:07:10.16\00:07:11.49 No. 00:07:11.53\00:07:12.86 A bunch before and a bunch after. 00:07:12.89\00:07:14.36 Probably in the middle 00:07:14.40\00:07:15.76 so you know when you get knocked around sometimes 00:07:15.80\00:07:18.50 but that's to be expected. 00:07:18.53\00:07:20.04 How did you hear about Christian Record Services? 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.97 Well, my mom actually knew Larry somehow. 00:07:22.00\00:07:25.47 I'm not sure how she knows him 00:07:25.51\00:07:30.35 but I remember Larry used to pick us up, 00:07:30.38\00:07:33.95 take us all over the place for summer camps. 00:07:33.98\00:07:36.72 Those are some awesome activities. 00:07:36.75\00:07:40.06 I like the summer ones the best though, 00:07:40.09\00:07:42.42 as you can swim, hiking. 00:07:42.46\00:07:45.23 Well, I guess being a Michigan guy, 00:07:45.26\00:07:47.43 I don't know how happier your town is, 00:07:47.46\00:07:49.30 if it's Upper Peninsula or of it's lower down. 00:07:49.33\00:07:51.10 Lower, it's in the lower. Okay. 00:07:51.13\00:07:52.67 Right. Right by the capital. Okay. 00:07:52.70\00:07:54.14 Well, Michigan knows how to do winter. 00:07:54.17\00:07:55.80 Being right from Buffalo, New York, 00:07:55.84\00:07:58.64 I know a little bit about winter too. 00:07:58.67\00:08:00.04 Sometimes I even wear shorts in the winters 00:08:00.08\00:08:01.98 so I've been known for doing that. 00:08:02.01\00:08:03.38 Bless your heart. 00:08:03.41\00:08:04.98 Gentlemen, give me just a little history 00:08:05.01\00:08:06.72 on Christian Record Services. 00:08:06.75\00:08:08.32 How old is the institution? 00:08:08.35\00:08:10.62 Christian Record started in 1899, 00:08:10.65\00:08:12.85 a blind man Austin Wilson 00:08:12.89\00:08:15.06 produced a braille magazine called the Christian Record 00:08:15.09\00:08:18.49 and we still produce that today. 00:08:18.53\00:08:21.73 So we started our camping program in 1967 00:08:21.76\00:08:25.97 so we're coming close to 50 years of blind camps. 00:08:26.00\00:08:29.87 Wow. Praise the Lord. 00:08:29.90\00:08:31.24 I know we're going to center around camp. 00:08:31.27\00:08:32.61 We'll go to our music in just a moment. 00:08:32.64\00:08:33.98 We're going to center around camp, 00:08:34.01\00:08:35.34 but give me just a broad overview 00:08:35.38\00:08:37.11 of some of the other services that you provide, 00:08:37.15\00:08:39.45 then we kind of honing on our camp 00:08:39.48\00:08:41.18 because that's what we're here for today. 00:08:41.22\00:08:42.55 Sure. Sure. 00:08:42.58\00:08:43.92 Well, it started out 00:08:43.95\00:08:45.29 with the braille magazine Christian Record then, 00:08:45.32\00:08:46.86 and so we produce books and magazines in braille 00:08:46.89\00:08:50.76 and Bibles and Bible lessons and things like that. 00:08:50.79\00:08:54.66 We have audio books and large print. 00:08:54.70\00:08:58.33 We have a scholarship program for blind college students 00:08:58.37\00:09:01.74 and we have some special things 00:09:01.77\00:09:04.64 I want to show you later for special blind people, 00:09:04.67\00:09:08.21 veterans who are blind 00:09:08.24\00:09:10.45 and for little children that are blind, 00:09:10.48\00:09:12.75 so I'll show you that later. 00:09:12.78\00:09:14.42 So you're consistent, not consistent 00:09:14.45\00:09:17.39 but the people that your target audience 00:09:17.42\00:09:19.49 not just young people 00:09:19.52\00:09:20.86 but cradles to the grave kind of thing, 00:09:20.89\00:09:22.36 I mean you're full service. 00:09:22.39\00:09:23.73 That's correct. Yeah. 00:09:23.76\00:09:25.09 And around the world, we opened I think 77 countries, 00:09:25.13\00:09:30.03 and of course you'd expect 00:09:30.07\00:09:31.43 that the US has the most number of our clients, 00:09:31.47\00:09:34.87 Canada is number two, 00:09:34.90\00:09:37.01 but you'd probably never guess 00:09:37.04\00:09:38.37 who number three is? 00:09:38.41\00:09:39.77 I probably wouldn't. 00:09:39.81\00:09:41.14 No. Malawi. Wow. 00:09:41.18\00:09:42.78 Yes, they get a lot of braille in Malawi. 00:09:42.81\00:09:45.11 My soul. 00:09:45.15\00:09:46.48 So this goes to any English speaking country, 00:09:46.51\00:09:50.12 we also have Spanish material 00:09:50.15\00:09:52.05 that Colombia is another country 00:09:52.09\00:09:54.22 that gets a lot of Spanish material 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.92 from Christian Record. 00:09:55.96\00:09:57.33 There's a lot of blind people there 00:09:57.36\00:09:59.19 and there, they are planning 00:09:59.23\00:10:01.23 that the Union down there 00:10:01.26\00:10:02.60 is planning the blind camp this fall. 00:10:02.63\00:10:04.87 That will be their spring 00:10:04.90\00:10:07.27 but for the very first blind camp 00:10:07.30\00:10:09.40 in Colombia will be in October. 00:10:09.44\00:10:12.24 Oh, Praise the Lord. 00:10:12.27\00:10:13.61 I want to go to our music and then come back 00:10:13.64\00:10:14.98 because when you think of camping, 00:10:15.01\00:10:16.41 you think of a kinds of activities 00:10:16.44\00:10:18.11 that one associates with camp. 00:10:18.15\00:10:20.32 You wouldn't think necessarily 00:10:20.35\00:10:22.38 that blind people could participate in 00:10:22.42\00:10:24.75 and have fun and be free to do those things 00:10:24.79\00:10:26.69 but of course they are, 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.49 and we want to walk through that, 00:10:28.52\00:10:29.86 I know you brought some pictures, 00:10:29.89\00:10:31.23 we got some video, 00:10:31.26\00:10:32.59 and I think it's a very, very exciting thing that 00:10:32.63\00:10:34.46 because you're sight challenged, 00:10:34.50\00:10:36.00 you're not struck in the house, 00:10:36.03\00:10:37.37 you're not struck and you can get out 00:10:37.40\00:10:38.73 and enjoy those kinds of thing. 00:10:38.77\00:10:40.10 So we want to talk about that. 00:10:40.14\00:10:41.47 Before we do, 00:10:41.50\00:10:42.84 Neville Peter is here and he is going to be singing 00:10:42.87\00:10:44.57 "Draw Me Nearer" and it's a medley 00:10:44.61\00:10:47.28 that includes "I Need Thee Every Hour." 00:10:47.31\00:10:50.65 I need You every hour 00:11:12.80\00:11:19.74 Most gracious Lord 00:11:19.77\00:11:24.18 No tender voice like Yours 00:11:24.21\00:11:29.55 Can peace afford 00:11:29.58\00:11:34.46 I need You every hour 00:11:34.49\00:11:39.93 Please stay right here 00:11:39.96\00:11:44.27 Temptations lose their power 00:11:47.80\00:11:51.21 When You are near 00:11:51.24\00:11:57.68 So draw me nearer, 00:11:57.71\00:12:04.05 Nearer to the cross 00:12:04.09\00:12:10.33 Where my Savior died 00:12:12.43\00:12:17.63 Draw me nearer 00:12:17.67\00:12:24.07 Still nearer 00:12:24.11\00:12:27.94 To Your precious 00:12:27.98\00:12:33.08 Bleeding side 00:12:33.11\00:12:39.25 That's where I want to be Lord 00:12:41.72\00:12:48.60 Hallelujah 00:12:48.63\00:12:54.10 I need You every hour 00:12:54.14\00:13:00.71 In joy and pain 00:13:00.74\00:13:04.61 Come quickly and abide 00:13:04.65\00:13:09.78 Or my life is vain 00:13:09.82\00:13:14.36 I need You every hour 00:13:14.39\00:13:20.10 Teach me Your will 00:13:20.13\00:13:24.57 Your precious promises 00:13:24.60\00:13:30.24 In me fulfill 00:13:30.27\00:13:36.85 Draw me nearer 00:13:36.88\00:13:42.18 Nearer to the cross 00:13:43.85\00:13:49.99 Where my Savior died 00:13:51.53\00:13:56.97 Draw me nearer 00:13:57.00\00:14:03.27 Still nearer 00:14:03.30\00:14:07.04 To Your precious 00:14:07.08\00:14:11.71 Bleeding side 00:14:11.75\00:14:18.72 That's where I want to be 00:14:19.45\00:14:22.66 I want to be nearer 00:14:22.69\00:14:25.43 Draw me nearer 00:14:32.77\00:14:39.64 Nearer to the cross 00:14:39.67\00:14:45.55 Where my Savior died 00:14:46.78\00:14:52.25 Draw me nearer 00:14:52.29\00:14:58.66 Still nearer to Your precious 00:14:58.69\00:15:05.20 Bleeding side 00:15:07.64\00:15:12.81 That's where I want to be Lord 00:15:12.84\00:15:18.65 I want to be nearer 00:15:18.68\00:15:21.95 To Your bleeding 00:15:21.98\00:15:28.96 Side 00:15:29.42\00:15:36.20 Neville Peter, well done, 00:15:42.74\00:15:44.07 and we thank him so very much for that medley. 00:15:44.11\00:15:46.98 Keith Elliot, Larry Hubbell, 00:15:47.01\00:15:49.44 and Collin McCubbin, McCubbin or Cubbin. 00:15:49.48\00:15:52.51 McCubbin. 00:15:52.55\00:15:53.88 McCubbin are here 00:15:53.92\00:15:55.25 and we're talking about the work of 00:15:55.28\00:15:56.99 Christian Record Services for the Blind 00:15:57.02\00:16:00.02 and the work that they do. 00:16:00.06\00:16:01.39 We are going to go into gentlemen 00:16:01.42\00:16:03.06 a little bit of discussion of the camp program. 00:16:03.09\00:16:07.56 Been around since the 60s. 00:16:07.60\00:16:09.53 I did not know that it was that old. 00:16:09.56\00:16:13.54 How many camps are there spread out across the country? 00:17:46.56\00:17:48.53 Well, swimming, boating. 00:17:48.56\00:17:53.97 In some of the camps 00:17:54.00\00:17:55.34 you get to go water-skiing too 00:17:55.37\00:17:58.34 and, well, biking of course, 00:17:58.37\00:18:01.78 so it's pretty much what a normal camper does. 00:18:01.81\00:18:03.78 Yeah. Yeah. 00:18:03.81\00:18:05.15 So the only difference is we get-- 00:18:05.18\00:18:09.55 I mean like the extra assistance 00:18:09.58\00:18:12.42 if we needed. 00:18:12.45\00:18:13.79 Yeah. Okay. Okay. 00:18:34.74\00:18:36.08 Have you done that? Have you actually done that? 00:18:36.11\00:18:37.45 I have but I didn't do it through Christian Record, 00:18:37.48\00:18:40.65 I did it through a different camp. 00:18:40.68\00:18:44.19 But you have water-skiing? 00:18:44.22\00:18:45.55 I have water-skiing but I'm kind of bad at it. 00:18:45.59\00:18:49.16 You know, I got-- 00:18:49.19\00:18:50.53 I have eyes and I'm bad at it too, 00:18:50.56\00:18:51.89 so don't worry about that. 00:18:51.93\00:18:53.83 See, I was blind, 00:18:53.86\00:18:55.93 I went to blind school till sixth grade. 00:18:55.96\00:18:58.63 I didn't know, pastor. 00:18:58.67\00:19:00.00 And then I had-- Well, I guess 00:19:00.04\00:19:01.57 I have had a dozen eye operations 00:19:01.60\00:19:03.51 and I got enough sight 00:19:03.54\00:19:04.87 to be mainlined into public school, 00:19:04.91\00:19:08.41 and then in the last, 00:19:08.44\00:19:09.78 oh, since I've been at 3ABN maybe another four operations 00:19:09.81\00:19:12.31 so I have-- I know what it is not to have sight 00:19:12.35\00:19:16.32 and then have a little sight and then have little more 00:19:16.35\00:19:18.62 and then not going back the other way, 00:19:18.65\00:19:19.99 losing my sight again. 00:19:20.02\00:19:21.36 Yeah, you have a lot to be thankful for. 00:19:21.39\00:19:22.86 You know, it is. 00:19:22.89\00:19:24.23 It is quite a lot to be thankful 00:19:24.26\00:19:25.69 and I'm also thankful for groups like yours 00:19:25.73\00:19:28.40 that really reach out that community 00:19:28.43\00:19:30.43 because it's a challenge but obviously they have fun. 00:19:30.47\00:19:36.34 How long are the camps sessions 00:19:36.37\00:19:39.47 when, you know, for each camp? 00:19:39.51\00:19:42.44 Yeah, most camps are a week. 00:19:42.48\00:19:44.61 Some our bike camps are little shorter 00:19:44.65\00:19:47.35 depending on the number of days 00:19:47.38\00:19:48.72 they bike in and things like that, 00:19:48.75\00:19:50.49 but, yeah, most of our camps run from Sunday to Sunday. 00:19:50.52\00:19:53.19 Yeah, now you've mentioned this bike camp idea. 00:19:53.22\00:19:56.79 How does that work? 00:19:56.83\00:19:58.16 I'll let Larry talk about that. 00:19:58.19\00:19:59.53 He coordinates our Michigan blind bike ride. 00:19:59.56\00:20:02.13 Uh-huh. 00:20:02.16\00:20:03.50 Well, what it is, we use bicycle built for two. 00:20:03.53\00:20:07.74 We put the sighted person in the front, 00:20:07.77\00:20:09.84 blind person in the back. 00:20:09.87\00:20:11.67 Now, when I first started 00:20:11.71\00:20:13.78 before I started, Heaven Blind Bikers Camp, 00:20:13.81\00:20:18.15 there was another one blind bikers camp in Tennessee 00:20:18.18\00:20:21.38 and what they did was they went to 187 miles 00:20:21.42\00:20:25.15 on the Natchez Trace 00:20:25.19\00:20:26.96 from Nashville, Tennessee to Tupelo, Mississippi 00:20:26.99\00:20:30.29 in two and half days. 00:20:30.33\00:20:32.26 Man, that's-- 00:20:32.29\00:20:35.00 That's covering a lot of territory. 00:20:35.03\00:20:36.93 Well, as I participated in that camp, 00:20:36.97\00:20:39.43 I decided that 00:20:39.47\00:20:40.80 I think my blind bikers in Michigan 00:20:40.84\00:20:44.11 wanted to do something different. 00:20:44.14\00:20:46.01 Maybe it's just my own selfish thing. 00:20:46.04\00:20:47.41 Yes. 00:20:47.44\00:20:48.78 I said why don't we bike out to an activity, 00:20:48.81\00:20:51.88 do the activity then bike back to camp. 00:20:51.91\00:20:54.22 Okay. Okay. 00:20:54.25\00:20:55.58 And so this is what we do. 00:20:55.62\00:20:56.95 We might go out to an airport, 00:20:56.99\00:20:59.82 we'll have bush pilot instructor come in 00:20:59.85\00:21:02.86 and he'll take three at a time, 00:21:02.89\00:21:04.89 will take our blind people up there 00:21:04.93\00:21:07.10 and he will go through the same paces that he does 00:21:07.13\00:21:09.73 when he is teaching a person how to fly. 00:21:09.76\00:21:14.37 And the person in the co pilot seat 00:21:14.40\00:21:16.87 actually gets to take control. 00:21:16.91\00:21:21.48 But they are never in danger. Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:21.51\00:21:23.45 Because they are just doing that. 00:21:23.48\00:21:25.68 Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:25.71\00:21:27.42 Now I see the pictures are up here. 00:21:27.45\00:21:28.98 There's a blind biker. 00:21:29.02\00:21:30.35 Yeah, that's what it shows there. 00:21:30.39\00:21:31.99 I always thought this bicycle build 00:21:32.02\00:21:33.79 for two thing. 00:21:33.82\00:21:35.16 Is the person in the back actually carrying weight 00:21:35.19\00:21:36.99 or they, are they-- 00:21:37.03\00:21:38.86 Is there pedaling, is sort helping the most, 00:21:38.89\00:21:41.46 so it's not just the person in front, 00:21:41.50\00:21:42.83 so both are actually carrying the weight. 00:21:42.86\00:21:44.20 Exactly, you can tell 00:21:44.23\00:21:45.57 when the person in the back is not pedaling. 00:21:45.60\00:21:47.54 You know what? It's really funny. 00:21:47.57\00:21:49.60 One time I was at a camp, you know, and I had a fellow 00:21:49.64\00:21:53.31 that was always coming in last, you know. 00:21:53.34\00:21:56.64 And he says 00:21:56.68\00:21:58.01 I just can't get any speed with this camper, you know. 00:21:58.05\00:22:00.72 And I thought, well, he is probably tired 00:22:00.75\00:22:02.52 so I had Collin and Collin, he was my partner 00:22:02.55\00:22:08.76 so I traded Collin for this other camper? 00:22:08.79\00:22:11.53 Guess what? We came in last. 00:22:11.56\00:22:15.03 So you wanted me back. 00:22:15.06\00:22:17.87 That mean we can come in first. 00:22:17.90\00:22:20.87 Collin always comes in first. 00:22:20.90\00:22:22.94 Yeah. Do you like biking Collin? 00:22:22.97\00:22:26.57 I do. 00:22:26.61\00:22:27.94 I can probably pedal for two people. 00:22:27.98\00:22:29.31 Yeah. 00:22:29.34\00:22:30.68 And he does. Does he really? 00:22:30.71\00:22:32.31 Yeah. Yeah. 00:22:32.35\00:22:33.68 That's a nice activity 00:22:33.72\00:22:35.48 and actually taking us somewhere 00:22:35.52\00:22:37.42 is really, a really, really great idea. 00:22:37.45\00:22:39.95 The boating and the swimming and those kinds of things, 00:22:39.99\00:22:42.86 how do you manage that and still maintain 00:22:42.89\00:22:44.76 the kind of safely levels that you want, 00:22:44.79\00:22:46.49 you know, to assist the person 00:22:46.53\00:22:48.30 who is sight challenged? 00:22:48.33\00:22:50.83 We're super careful 00:22:50.87\00:22:53.47 like if we're getting people in and out of the boat, 00:22:53.50\00:22:56.81 we just, we're right there, 00:22:56.84\00:22:58.17 you know, right with them every second, 00:22:58.21\00:22:59.87 you know, to make sure 00:22:59.91\00:23:01.24 they don't step in between and go down the lake. 00:23:01.28\00:23:05.98 Does that answering your question? 00:23:06.01\00:23:07.35 Yeah, no, no, it does because 00:23:07.38\00:23:09.22 I mean there are so many ways 00:23:09.25\00:23:10.72 a person get separated or you misstep 00:23:10.75\00:23:12.62 or you're not thinking ahead, trying to look out. 00:23:12.65\00:23:14.82 When I was in sight saving school, 00:23:14.86\00:23:17.66 those who had little sight 00:23:17.69\00:23:19.69 assisted those who had no sight, 00:23:19.73\00:23:21.90 but and back then they were very, very careful 00:23:21.93\00:23:26.03 not to misstep or not to let go or not to give bad directions 00:23:26.07\00:23:29.20 because, you know, something could happen. 00:23:29.24\00:23:31.34 And I suspect you had the same kind of diligence 00:23:31.37\00:23:33.27 with your campers. 00:23:33.31\00:23:35.24 Yeah, our camps require more supervision 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.45 because of the safety issues. 00:23:37.48\00:23:40.32 Is there a board or some kind of agency 00:23:40.35\00:23:42.48 that overlooks the procedures and the kind of things 00:23:42.52\00:23:46.05 that happens at camp as far as, 00:23:46.09\00:23:47.69 you know, from a safety standpoint? 00:23:47.72\00:23:49.09 Yes. Yeah. 00:23:49.12\00:23:50.46 And we go to a camp for blind 00:23:50.49\00:23:53.76 and we go ahead of time 00:23:53.80\00:23:55.13 and during their orientation time, 00:23:55.16\00:23:58.17 camp the staff weekend and actually teach new staff 00:23:58.20\00:24:01.50 that have never worked with blind 00:24:01.54\00:24:02.87 how to lead a blind 00:24:02.90\00:24:04.24 and we actually blindfold them for part of the day 00:24:04.27\00:24:06.37 so they have the experience 00:24:06.41\00:24:07.81 what it's like to be blind. 00:24:07.84\00:24:09.84 The first year that I was at camp, 00:24:09.88\00:24:12.11 they blindfolded me at breakfast 00:24:12.15\00:24:13.92 and I couldn't hardly get through breakfast. 00:24:13.95\00:24:16.12 I knocked over my orange juice 00:24:16.15\00:24:17.65 and the food didn't even taste as good 00:24:17.69\00:24:19.29 because I couldn't see what I was eating. 00:24:19.32\00:24:21.39 Yeah. Yeah. 00:24:21.42\00:24:22.76 I can neither, 00:24:22.79\00:24:24.99 but I eat breakfast just fine. 00:24:25.03\00:24:29.06 Yeah, they teach us, you know. 00:24:29.10\00:24:31.60 You know this is a spirit, 00:24:31.63\00:24:32.97 our camps are spiritual, you know. 00:24:33.00\00:24:35.60 We're trying to help the blind see Jesus 00:24:35.64\00:24:38.01 but a lot of times the campers help us see Jesus. 00:24:38.04\00:24:41.04 Yeah. Yeah. 00:24:41.08\00:24:43.65 Collin, tell me as a person 00:24:43.68\00:24:45.55 who is sight challenged, who is blind. 00:24:45.58\00:24:48.25 When are we doing too much for you? 00:24:48.28\00:24:50.32 You know what I mean. 00:24:50.35\00:24:51.69 When are we smothering you because there is this tendency 00:24:51.72\00:24:54.62 and I-- when I was growing up by, 00:24:54.66\00:24:56.32 I knew there are some parents 00:24:56.36\00:24:57.69 who really kind of held tight reins on their children. 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.93 But when is-- when is it too much? 00:24:59.96\00:25:01.30 How much freedom do you require? 00:25:01.33\00:25:02.66 Do you like, are you comfortable with. 00:25:02.70\00:25:04.83 Well, I need minimum assistance, 00:25:04.87\00:25:07.04 but every person is different 00:25:07.07\00:25:08.70 and the best way to figure out that issue 00:25:08.74\00:25:12.87 is to ask the person, don't be afraid to. 00:25:12.91\00:25:15.18 We talk too. We can hear too. 00:25:15.21\00:25:18.68 Well, I know you do. 00:25:18.71\00:25:22.42 No, but I mean you dose-- 00:25:22.45\00:25:23.79 there is no way you can figure it out 00:25:23.82\00:25:25.15 unless the person tells you 00:25:25.19\00:25:26.52 because, you know, you do everything 00:25:26.55\00:25:27.96 you can to help the person with disabilities 00:25:27.99\00:25:30.16 but you won't know 00:25:30.19\00:25:32.33 if it's too much unless they say something, 00:25:32.36\00:25:34.76 so it's up to you and the person 00:25:34.80\00:25:36.56 have to work that out. 00:25:36.60\00:25:37.93 Have to work together. 00:25:37.97\00:25:39.30 I mean I always say something but funny. 00:25:39.33\00:25:44.04 How many years have you been going to camp? 00:25:44.07\00:25:46.98 See, how many years has it been any guess? 00:25:47.01\00:25:51.08 I miss couple of years. 00:25:51.11\00:25:52.81 Well, you were about 9 years old 00:25:52.85\00:25:54.52 when you first came. 00:25:54.55\00:25:55.88 Yeah, I was 9. 00:25:55.92\00:25:57.25 That's okay. We can live with that. 00:25:57.29\00:25:59.42 You've been coming a couple of years. 00:25:59.45\00:26:00.79 A long time. 00:26:00.82\00:26:02.62 Plus a few more on to that. 00:26:02.66\00:26:06.43 Yeah. 00:26:06.46\00:26:07.80 Collin has several brothers and a sister 00:26:07.83\00:26:10.57 that's come to camp as well. 00:26:10.60\00:26:12.97 And I remember one year 00:26:13.00\00:26:14.34 when four of them were out with the same camp 00:26:14.37\00:26:16.57 at the same time. 00:26:16.60\00:26:17.94 Wow. I don't feel antisocial at all. 00:27:18.97\00:27:22.14 Let's go to some of the pictures now 00:27:22.17\00:27:23.97 because I want to take a look at, 00:27:24.01\00:27:25.34 then you can kind of walk me through this experience. 00:27:25.37\00:27:28.08 We talked about the tandem biking 00:27:28.11\00:27:30.55 and that the person at the back is carrying their weight. 00:27:30.58\00:27:33.05 There they're pushing as well as the person in front, 00:27:33.08\00:27:36.48 and that must be exciting for the guys 00:27:36.52\00:27:37.85 and to this idea 00:27:37.89\00:27:39.22 going 187 miles in a couple of days 00:27:39.25\00:27:40.89 so you kind of get out there and this is not little 00:27:40.92\00:27:44.23 go around the block kind of thing, 00:27:44.26\00:27:45.59 this is biking. 00:27:45.63\00:27:46.96 Serious cycling. 00:27:47.00\00:27:48.33 Yeah, there's a serious cycling. 00:27:48.36\00:27:49.70 But in Michigan we don't go 187 miles. 00:27:49.73\00:27:52.00 We may go 20, 25, 30 miles, 00:27:52.03\00:27:54.84 you know, is the most we'll do in a day. 00:27:54.87\00:27:57.44 Now, what's this we're looking at? 00:27:57.47\00:27:59.71 Oh, this is beeper ball 00:27:59.74\00:28:03.48 and right here 00:28:03.51\00:28:07.48 we're at Great Lakes Adventist Academy 00:28:07.52\00:28:11.19 at the ball field. 00:28:11.22\00:28:12.55 Yeah. So the ball beeps. 00:28:12.59\00:28:13.96 And the ball beeps, they hit the ball 00:28:13.99\00:28:17.19 and then it will go out in the field 00:28:17.23\00:28:19.59 and if somebody catches the ball 00:28:19.63\00:28:21.86 before he gets to first base, he is out. 00:28:21.90\00:28:25.30 Okay. 00:28:25.33\00:28:26.67 But if he gets to first base 00:28:26.70\00:28:28.04 before somebody gets the ball he's got homerun. 00:28:28.07\00:28:31.21 Oh, I see, okay. 00:28:31.24\00:28:32.81 So the base beeps as well, 00:28:32.84\00:28:34.18 so he is running towards the base. 00:28:34.21\00:28:36.18 But it's a different beep 00:28:36.21\00:28:38.35 The ball beeps one sound 00:28:38.38\00:28:41.78 and the base beeps another sound. 00:28:41.82\00:28:43.15 Another sound, okay, I see. 00:28:43.18\00:28:44.52 Kind of know you runs into base and not the ball. 00:28:44.55\00:28:48.59 It make a lot of sense. 00:28:48.62\00:28:49.96 Do you play that game, Collin? 00:28:49.99\00:28:51.69 Well, I haven't played it lot 00:28:51.73\00:28:53.70 but yeah, if I play I start running into people, 00:28:53.73\00:28:58.00 sometimes on purpose. 00:28:58.03\00:29:01.30 All right. Let's go back to our pictures. 00:29:01.34\00:29:02.67 Okay. 00:29:02.70\00:29:04.04 This is at the Adventist Historical Village. 00:29:04.07\00:29:07.88 On Sabbath, every Sabbath there were a blind bikers camp. 00:29:07.91\00:29:14.12 I take them to one of three things, 00:29:14.15\00:29:17.22 either the Old Rugged Cross Museum 00:29:17.25\00:29:19.42 in Reed City, Michigan. 00:29:19.45\00:29:22.69 Reed City was the last place that 00:29:22.72\00:29:26.19 George Bernard lived before he died. 00:29:26.23\00:29:28.96 And when he died 00:29:29.00\00:29:30.33 he willed all his things to the city of Reed City. 00:29:30.37\00:29:32.63 I see. 00:29:32.67\00:29:34.00 And so they made a museum there and they've added tour, 00:29:34.04\00:29:36.00 it's quite a nice thing. 00:29:36.04\00:29:37.67 And it's a spiritual, 00:29:37.71\00:29:39.04 I have the man have a spiritual talk 00:29:39.07\00:29:42.31 and so he goes through all of the things there. 00:29:42.34\00:29:45.35 The other thing is that 00:29:45.38\00:29:47.15 we go to the Adventist Historical Village, 00:29:47.18\00:29:52.12 that was the picture there. 00:29:52.15\00:29:53.89 And on Sabbath we actually 00:29:53.92\00:29:55.29 have one of the churches 00:29:55.32\00:29:56.66 and have our own church service 00:29:56.69\00:29:58.79 in one of the historical churches. 00:29:58.83\00:30:00.16 I see. 00:30:00.20\00:30:01.53 That was the old pump organ there, 00:30:01.56\00:30:02.90 that was Abbey, she is-- she is a blind girl, 00:30:02.93\00:30:04.97 I found here in Ohio 00:30:05.00\00:30:07.10 and she plays-- she played the old pump organ 00:30:07.14\00:30:10.47 while we sang and so that's what that was. 00:30:10.51\00:30:13.51 That must be nice. 00:30:13.54\00:30:14.88 So there seems to be a strong spiritual component 00:30:14.91\00:30:18.05 and there's fun obviously, 00:30:18.08\00:30:19.41 but there is strong spiritual component to the camp also. 00:30:19.45\00:30:21.28 That's right. 00:30:21.32\00:30:22.65 I've often said, you know, 00:30:22.68\00:30:24.02 if it wasn't for camp counsel in the morning 00:30:24.05\00:30:26.12 and camp fire at night, 00:30:26.15\00:30:27.76 we might as well send them to any other camp. 00:30:27.79\00:30:30.83 But we're doing something of a spiritual nature 00:30:30.86\00:30:33.93 that nobody else is doing. 00:30:33.96\00:30:35.30 So you build into a program at time 00:30:35.33\00:30:37.10 to sort of connect with God, 00:30:37.13\00:30:38.47 to learn about God, to know God if you do not, 00:30:38.50\00:30:40.24 that's part of the curriculum dare we say. 00:30:40.27\00:30:43.34 Let's go back, I think we have a few more pictures. 00:30:43.37\00:30:46.78 Okay. 00:30:46.81\00:30:48.14 This is a Challenge Mountain. 00:30:48.18\00:30:49.51 This is at Boyne City, Michigan 00:30:49.54\00:30:51.61 and we go to camp-- for our winter camp. 00:30:51.65\00:30:55.68 And then we drive up to Challenge Mountain. 00:30:55.72\00:30:58.22 It's a special ski hill that's for handicap people. 00:30:58.25\00:31:03.16 I mean they have all different 00:31:03.19\00:31:04.83 kinds of handicap that come there. 00:31:04.86\00:31:06.76 Now, one of the things that they have 00:31:06.80\00:31:08.63 is a special ski for people on wheelchairs 00:31:08.66\00:31:12.13 and our blind people even like that one, 00:31:12.17\00:31:14.54 but you'd be surprised in just a very, very short time, 00:31:14.57\00:31:18.67 this is Matthew and Linda is the instructor 00:31:18.71\00:31:22.34 and she is the one that's 00:31:22.38\00:31:23.71 in charge of Challenge Mountain. 00:31:23.75\00:31:26.35 And in just a very short time 00:31:26.38\00:31:28.05 they get them skiing right out there. 00:31:28.08\00:31:29.72 Now I want to go back if we can to that first picture 00:31:29.75\00:31:31.99 because that, that-- 00:31:32.02\00:31:33.36 those cords seem attached to the front of the skis. 00:31:33.39\00:31:36.06 Now, who-- the blind person is behind. 00:31:36.09\00:31:39.79 No, in front. In front. 00:31:39.83\00:31:41.70 So those are loose cords, 00:31:41.73\00:31:43.23 so you just-- you're kind of steering them. 00:31:43.26\00:31:45.30 Steering the skis. 00:31:45.33\00:31:46.84 The skis are attached together 00:31:46.87\00:31:49.17 and so the ski instructors from behind 00:31:49.20\00:31:52.97 and this is one of many techniques 00:31:53.01\00:31:54.88 they use for people with handicaps 00:31:54.91\00:31:58.05 to get them to have experience of skiing. 00:31:58.08\00:32:00.48 Of skiing. Wow, wow. 00:32:00.52\00:32:01.92 Because my head is saying how do they do that? 00:32:01.95\00:32:04.05 You know, how do they get that done 00:32:04.09\00:32:05.75 but you can see it there. 00:32:05.79\00:32:07.12 They're coming up with new things all the time, 00:32:07.16\00:32:09.02 you know, how to-- how to do this you know. 00:32:09.06\00:32:11.99 Yeah. 00:32:12.03\00:32:13.36 So every experience 00:32:13.40\00:32:14.73 pretty much that a sighted person has, 00:32:14.76\00:32:16.70 a blind person can have. 00:32:16.73\00:32:18.10 Yeah. 00:32:18.13\00:32:19.47 Do you have anymore? Yeah. 00:32:19.50\00:32:20.84 That we have-- Norine is coming on later 00:32:20.87\00:32:23.20 and she is gonna talk about her camp, 00:32:23.24\00:32:25.57 so we have some more pictures. 00:32:25.61\00:32:26.94 Okay. Great, great. 00:32:26.98\00:32:29.01 One winter camp and several summer camps? 00:32:29.04\00:32:31.11 Hmm, 12 yeah. Twelve? 00:32:31.15\00:32:32.65 And the winter camp is in Michigan. 00:32:32.68\00:32:34.82 It's in Grayling, Michigan. 00:32:34.85\00:32:36.18 Okay. Okay. 00:32:36.22\00:32:37.55 If you had that camp at Buffalo, 00:32:37.59\00:32:38.92 you can have the winter camp almost through July 00:32:38.95\00:32:41.96 because I talked about this the other day, 00:32:41.99\00:32:45.26 they're still getting snow even late in the year. 00:32:45.29\00:32:49.40 Are they expensive? 00:32:49.43\00:32:50.77 Is it, you know, 00:32:50.80\00:32:52.20 is it expensive to get a young person into camp? 00:32:52.23\00:32:55.74 The camps are free to the clients, to the blind. 00:32:55.77\00:32:58.87 Okay. 00:32:58.91\00:33:00.24 They pay a small registration fees 00:33:00.28\00:33:02.21 that's when they apply, but it's free to them 00:33:02.24\00:33:06.41 but it is expensive. 00:33:06.45\00:33:07.78 Yeah. So we do fund raising. 00:33:07.82\00:33:09.15 Our representatives fund raise all year along 00:33:09.18\00:33:11.55 for our camps and our other services. 00:33:11.59\00:33:13.76 Okay. Okay. 00:33:13.79\00:33:15.12 Yeah, our first winter camp was in Colorado, 00:33:15.16\00:33:16.99 we started in 1980 00:33:17.03\00:33:21.33 and that's probably one of our more expensive camps 00:33:21.36\00:33:23.60 because of the location. 00:33:23.63\00:33:24.97 They have a great program there. 00:33:25.00\00:33:27.57 Some volunteers have continued that camp 00:33:27.60\00:33:29.80 and they still operate that camp every winter. 00:33:29.84\00:33:32.87 And Collin's went to that camp 00:33:32.91\00:33:34.24 and did some serious downhill skiing 00:33:34.28\00:33:36.41 on that camp. 00:33:36.44\00:33:37.78 And I want to go back there again. 00:33:37.81\00:33:40.48 He loves it. 00:33:40.52\00:33:42.25 Before we go to our video and bring Norine on, 00:33:42.28\00:33:45.42 Collin, obviously camp is something 00:33:45.45\00:33:47.16 that is of important in your life. 00:33:47.19\00:33:49.92 If someone would ask you a blind person 00:33:49.96\00:33:52.06 and you were kind of being the commercial promoter guy, 00:33:52.09\00:33:55.33 what would you say to him 00:33:55.36\00:33:56.70 about the value of 00:33:56.73\00:33:58.07 about the importance of coming to camp? 00:33:58.10\00:34:01.44 About the people in coming together, 00:34:01.47\00:34:04.27 all about making new friends, 00:34:04.31\00:34:07.91 you know, having fun. 00:34:07.94\00:34:10.51 And we can fun too. 00:34:10.55\00:34:13.58 It's not just, you know, coming heck, 00:34:13.62\00:34:15.98 they have a lot of camps for sighted people 00:34:16.02\00:34:17.62 so why can't they have camps for us too. 00:34:17.65\00:34:20.82 Good deal. Good deal. All right. 00:34:20.86\00:34:23.39 I want to go to the video now 00:34:23.43\00:34:26.43 and we'll take a look at this 00:34:26.46\00:34:28.10 and then we're gonna make a quick search here, 00:34:28.13\00:34:29.70 but let's take a look at that video 00:34:29.73\00:34:31.27 just now. 00:34:31.30\00:34:32.63 Our deepest fear is not that we're inadequate. 00:34:40.88\00:34:43.81 Our deepest fear is that we're powerful beyond measure. 00:34:43.85\00:34:47.15 It is our light not our darkness 00:34:47.18\00:34:49.28 that most frightens us. 00:34:49.32\00:34:51.22 You're a child of God. 00:34:51.25\00:34:53.32 Your playing small doest serve the world. 00:34:53.36\00:34:56.19 There is nothing enlightened about shrinking 00:34:56.22\00:34:58.13 so that other people won't feel insecure around you. 00:34:58.16\00:35:02.53 We're all meant to shine as children do. 00:35:02.56\00:35:05.83 You know, Peter is one of the campers 00:35:05.87\00:35:07.20 that I remember first meeting. 00:35:07.24\00:35:08.94 He has a huge smile. 00:35:08.97\00:35:10.37 He is enthusiastic. 00:35:10.41\00:35:12.11 He is excited about camp 00:35:12.14\00:35:14.54 and probably what really sits out to me 00:35:14.58\00:35:16.28 about him is he's excited about God. 00:35:16.31\00:35:19.25 I have a goal 00:35:19.28\00:35:20.78 and my goal is to serve the Lord 00:35:20.82\00:35:23.49 to the very best of my ability 00:35:23.52\00:35:25.62 and to do something in the medical field. 00:35:25.65\00:35:28.52 I should be certified registered nurse 00:35:28.56\00:35:30.66 and anesthetist or respiratory therapist. 00:35:30.69\00:35:34.00 This has been a dream for me, 00:35:34.03\00:35:36.20 pretty much my whole entire life. 00:35:36.23\00:35:39.97 When I see the nurses at camp I get profoundly excited 00:35:40.00\00:35:44.11 and especially when the CRNAs come, 00:35:44.14\00:35:47.44 when they come to camp that is beyond words. 00:35:47.48\00:35:50.68 It became apparent to us 00:35:50.71\00:35:52.88 that not only was he interested in 00:35:52.91\00:35:55.95 just seeing us on a regular basis as needed, 00:35:55.98\00:35:59.82 but he considered us an activity 00:35:59.85\00:36:02.46 and so he'd schedule time that he could sit with us 00:36:02.49\00:36:07.53 and have conversations about nursing as a profession 00:36:07.56\00:36:12.47 and particularly anesthesia care. 00:36:12.50\00:36:16.10 Okay, some stuff about me. 00:36:16.14\00:36:18.51 I'm 22 years old. 00:36:18.54\00:36:21.61 I love life 00:36:21.64\00:36:22.98 because Jesus Christ died on the cross for me 00:36:23.01\00:36:26.18 and so I have reason to live and to be happy. 00:36:26.21\00:36:30.89 He loves to play the piano. 00:36:30.92\00:36:33.25 He likes to be called Johan 00:36:33.29\00:36:35.66 because he knows how to play bak. 00:36:35.69\00:36:37.96 I have actually asked people who called me Johan at camp 00:36:37.99\00:36:41.53 and they heard me play the piano 00:36:41.56\00:36:43.47 and so that's how they started calling me Johan. 00:36:43.50\00:36:47.50 I do remember last year here at the camp 00:36:47.54\00:36:50.01 as we were talking, I shared with him 00:36:50.04\00:36:52.27 that there were some options 00:36:52.31\00:36:53.64 with the Seventh-day Adventist hymn note. 00:36:53.68\00:36:55.51 When I heard about the real hymn note, 00:36:55.54\00:36:57.95 I was so excited. 00:36:57.98\00:37:00.52 We were told all you have to do is ask, 00:37:00.55\00:37:02.75 so we wrote to Christian Record 00:37:02.78\00:37:05.62 and we asked finally around Christmas of last year 2013, 00:37:05.65\00:37:10.99 the hymn note was there for him. 00:37:11.03\00:37:12.53 Oh, what a joy, 00:37:12.56\00:37:13.93 his face glowed as we brought him upfront, 00:37:13.96\00:37:17.33 gave him the hymn note. 00:37:17.37\00:37:18.70 The Lord has done 00:37:18.73\00:37:20.07 so much through Christian Records 00:37:20.10\00:37:22.27 that has blessed so many people. 00:37:22.30\00:37:24.67 I feel that they give me confidence 00:37:24.71\00:37:26.74 to go for bigger goal by teaching me about God 00:37:26.78\00:37:31.11 and about witnessing to others. 00:37:31.15\00:37:33.98 I love being at camps for the blind, 00:37:34.02\00:37:36.89 Christian Records sponsors this camp. 00:37:36.92\00:37:39.52 Behind me you can see campers engage in archery, 00:37:39.55\00:37:43.32 that's just an example of some of the things 00:37:43.36\00:37:46.49 that Christian Record helps inspire confidence 00:37:46.53\00:37:50.83 in the campers that come here, 00:37:50.87\00:37:52.20 but not only at camp 00:37:52.23\00:37:54.44 but also with our braille large print, 00:37:54.47\00:37:56.81 audio, web services 00:37:56.84\00:37:58.77 so many things that we want to do 00:37:58.81\00:38:01.61 and we do them because you care, 00:38:01.64\00:38:03.35 you help us, you make it possible. 00:38:03.38\00:38:05.35 Did you know that 00:38:05.38\00:38:06.72 $15000 could pay for this entire camp, 00:38:06.75\00:38:10.95 I know there is someone out here 00:38:10.99\00:38:12.35 that's gonna write that check, 00:38:12.39\00:38:13.72 it's happened before, it can happen again. 00:38:13.76\00:38:16.36 But regardless of what you can give, 00:38:16.39\00:38:18.59 every little bit helps. 00:38:18.63\00:38:20.63 We appreciate it so much 00:38:20.66\00:38:22.50 that you have the confidence in us 00:38:22.53\00:38:24.87 that we can share that confidence with the blind 00:38:24.90\00:38:28.30 so that all of us can see Jesus when He comes. 00:38:28.34\00:38:32.31 The Lord has done so much through Christian Records 00:38:32.34\00:38:36.04 that has blessed so many people 00:38:36.08\00:38:38.51 and I think that they are giving to God 00:38:38.55\00:38:40.98 to help spread His news, the good news in His word 00:38:41.02\00:38:45.72 further and further. 00:38:45.75\00:38:47.09 So you get a bit of an idea of what happens at camp 00:38:54.50\00:38:57.37 and Keith, Johan 00:38:57.40\00:39:03.14 what a livewire he is for the Lord 00:39:03.17\00:39:05.01 and he seems so very, very excited. 00:39:05.04\00:39:06.37 Is he kind of typical of the young person 00:39:06.41\00:39:08.34 that attends those kinds of camps? 00:39:08.38\00:39:09.98 Pretty much. 00:39:10.01\00:39:11.35 Yeah, looking for excitement, looking for challenges 00:39:11.38\00:39:15.02 and yeah, he is a unique fellow, 00:39:15.05\00:39:18.75 he wants to be a nurse anesthetist. 00:39:18.79\00:39:20.66 Yeah. Bless his heart. 00:39:20.69\00:39:22.02 Yeah, that's-- he is biting of a big elephant 00:39:22.06\00:39:24.26 that's really, really something 00:39:24.29\00:39:25.96 but, you know, if anyone is going to do, 00:39:25.99\00:39:27.33 he's got the energy 00:39:27.36\00:39:28.70 and he certainly is a bright child. 00:39:28.73\00:39:30.07 He has passed all the tests 00:39:30.10\00:39:31.43 he needs to get into this school. 00:39:31.47\00:39:33.70 Yeah. Amen. Amen. All right. 00:39:33.74\00:39:35.50 We've got a rose to add to the thorns. 00:39:35.54\00:39:38.47 Norine Westerbeck, good to have you here. 00:39:38.51\00:39:41.08 And you're representing the Yorktown Bay Arkansas camp 00:39:41.11\00:39:46.51 and you coordinate duties for that camp. 00:39:46.55\00:39:49.35 Give me some idea of 00:39:49.38\00:39:50.72 what your portfolio is as coordinator for camp. 00:39:50.75\00:39:53.72 What do you do during the year 00:39:53.76\00:39:55.32 and then what you do once camp starts? 00:39:55.36\00:39:57.69 Well, during the year the very first past of the year 00:39:57.73\00:40:00.20 I start visiting the area where the camp takes place 00:40:00.23\00:40:05.30 and I start visiting Lions Clubs 00:40:05.33\00:40:07.74 and different organizations 00:40:07.77\00:40:10.41 that can help us do some of the outside activities 00:40:10.44\00:40:13.84 like going to the fun trackers 00:40:13.88\00:40:17.68 which is go karts and water bumpers, 00:40:17.71\00:40:24.42 arcades and mini golf, 00:40:24.45\00:40:28.02 that's one of the activities, 00:40:28.06\00:40:30.09 another activity is the lawn bowling, 00:40:30.13\00:40:34.13 it's a new activity 00:40:34.16\00:40:35.50 that the Breakfast Lions Clubs helped us sponsor. 00:40:35.53\00:40:40.74 Then we do another place called Jurassic Park 00:40:40.77\00:40:43.34 and it's another go kart place because they love go karts. 00:40:43.37\00:40:46.98 I think we'll have some pictures 00:40:47.01\00:40:48.34 that will show them. 00:40:48.38\00:40:49.71 What it's amazing to me, 00:40:49.74\00:40:51.08 I remember Lions Club growing up 00:40:51.11\00:40:52.55 because they'd do our Christmas party 00:40:52.58\00:40:54.02 and they're doing a spring break kind of party. 00:40:54.05\00:40:57.79 And it's nice 00:40:57.82\00:40:59.15 that you sort of interface with them 00:40:59.19\00:41:01.42 and work with them 00:41:01.46\00:41:02.79 but a lot of these things that you're mentioning 00:41:02.82\00:41:04.63 it would never occur to me 00:41:04.66\00:41:06.43 that I guess I was sort of in the dark ages. 00:41:06.46\00:41:10.67 They showed on the video archery, 00:41:10.70\00:41:12.57 you know, go karts, these kinds of things 00:41:12.60\00:41:15.90 that you would think are limited to those with sight, 00:41:15.94\00:41:18.41 but blind people can really enjoy those 00:41:18.44\00:41:21.11 and be a part of those also. 00:41:21.14\00:41:24.35 On Friday this year we'll be doing 00:41:24.38\00:41:26.45 the Gangster Museum. 00:41:26.48\00:41:28.82 Hot Springs has a real history 00:41:28.85\00:41:30.62 of little Chicago coming to Hot Springs and Al Capone 00:41:30.65\00:41:36.46 and even the machine gun 00:41:36.49\00:41:38.29 that they used during that time, 00:41:38.33\00:41:41.36 I'm not sure exactly what they did with it 00:41:41.40\00:41:44.03 but I guess they shot it, 00:41:44.07\00:41:46.74 but they love it, they absolutely love it 00:41:46.77\00:41:50.07 and we have sponsors that help with that program. 00:41:50.11\00:41:54.94 Bowling is another activity 00:41:54.98\00:41:57.25 that The Knights of Columbus, they help sponsor it. 00:41:57.28\00:42:04.02 Fishing they have morning up fishing, 00:42:04.05\00:42:07.12 the Angler's Club helps with that. 00:42:07.16\00:42:10.59 They take our campers out for a morning fishing. 00:42:10.63\00:42:13.43 So you've reached out to any number of other agencies 00:42:13.46\00:42:16.36 to sort of help you with your program. 00:42:16.40\00:42:17.80 Yes. Yes. Yeah. 00:42:17.83\00:42:19.17 That is really wonderful. 00:42:19.20\00:42:20.54 And Fountain Lake School District 00:42:20.57\00:42:22.50 is our bus service during that week 00:42:22.54\00:42:24.57 and they've been doing that for a number of years. 00:42:24.61\00:42:26.51 Wow. 00:42:26.54\00:42:27.88 Now, Keith, is that, is what Norine talking about 00:42:27.91\00:42:30.38 is that just the Yorktown Bay camp 00:42:30.41\00:42:32.81 or do all the camps sort of reach out 00:42:32.85\00:42:34.82 to bring in services from other agencies 00:42:34.85\00:42:36.72 that want to help blind, blind students also. 00:42:36.75\00:42:40.22 To some extent, 00:42:40.26\00:42:41.59 I think Norine's camp has more volunteers, 00:42:41.62\00:42:43.83 more outside activities. 00:42:43.86\00:42:45.23 Many of our camps, we just stay at camp 00:42:45.26\00:42:47.90 and do the activities that are there 00:42:47.93\00:42:50.23 and do them, maybe more than once, 00:42:50.27\00:42:52.43 you know, water-skiing and horseback riding, 00:42:52.47\00:42:55.00 archery and things like that. 00:42:55.04\00:42:56.37 Yeah. Yeah. 00:42:56.40\00:42:57.74 And I'm sure they don't mind doing that more than once. 00:42:57.77\00:42:59.67 What was that again to it. 00:42:59.71\00:43:01.04 I got to ask these questions, this is not just 00:43:01.08\00:43:03.61 for Adventist kids, is that not so? 00:43:03.65\00:43:05.21 No. 00:43:05.25\00:43:06.58 It's for all denominations or no denomination. 00:43:06.61\00:43:09.28 Yeah. Yeah. 00:43:09.32\00:43:10.65 And it's good 00:43:10.69\00:43:12.02 that the spiritual componentis there, 00:43:12.05\00:43:14.72 so that they do get a chance 00:43:14.76\00:43:16.09 to meet the Lord and learn about the Lord 00:43:16.12\00:43:17.46 and understand that he loves them. 00:43:17.49\00:43:18.83 Yeah, that's a very, very important part. 00:43:18.86\00:43:20.30 We have a number of baptisms-- 00:43:20.33\00:43:22.36 Is that so? Yes. 00:43:22.40\00:43:23.73 Wow. Praise the Lord. 00:43:23.77\00:43:25.10 Praise the Lord. 00:43:25.13\00:43:26.47 In fact our morning for the last couple of years, 00:43:26.50\00:43:28.50 our morning devotion person 00:43:28.54\00:43:30.61 actually is a camper 00:43:30.64\00:43:33.64 that works for another organization 00:43:33.68\00:43:37.05 that is not Adventist 00:43:37.08\00:43:39.21 but that is from another denomination 00:43:39.25\00:43:42.72 and I don't know if I'm able to mention it or not 00:43:42.75\00:43:45.79 but it's Family Life Today and he's worked there 17 years 00:43:45.82\00:43:51.26 and he is a blind gentlemen that is just loves the Lord 00:43:51.29\00:43:55.66 and he has something in common with me 00:43:55.70\00:44:01.20 and that has some-- 00:44:01.24\00:44:03.00 his wife passed 00:44:03.04\00:44:04.67 in March of 2013 00:44:04.71\00:44:11.01 and my husband passed in 2012. 00:44:11.05\00:44:13.28 And so we had that in common and I knew him before that 00:44:13.31\00:44:17.12 and asked him 00:44:17.15\00:44:18.49 if he would be interested in doing 00:44:18.52\00:44:19.85 and he okay did with the pastor 00:44:19.89\00:44:23.76 that usually does our blind camp pastor, 00:44:23.79\00:44:27.76 and ask him if it would be okay 00:44:27.80\00:44:29.73 if he did the morning part 00:44:29.76\00:44:31.47 and he said, sure, I'm able to share 00:44:31.50\00:44:33.84 and so we kind of interviewed him 00:44:33.87\00:44:35.20 and so he's done that the last couple of years for us 00:44:35.24\00:44:38.04 and plans to do that again this year. 00:44:38.07\00:44:39.74 Excellent. Let me ask you, Norine, 00:44:39.77\00:44:41.11 because I asked Larry, I asked Keith, 00:44:41.14\00:44:43.18 how did you get started with Christian Record Services? 00:44:43.21\00:44:47.58 In 1997, I went to a fund raiser 00:44:47.62\00:44:54.29 that was done in the Poplar Bluff, Missouri Church, 00:44:54.32\00:44:57.33 a young man had started working for Christian Record 00:44:57.36\00:44:59.79 and he sang 00:44:59.83\00:45:01.16 and so that it was kind of like a fund raiser 00:45:01.20\00:45:05.23 and I don't know there was this piece of paper 00:45:05.27\00:45:09.07 that had, you know, 00:45:09.10\00:45:11.64 something about being interested in ministry 00:45:11.67\00:45:15.94 or something like that. 00:45:15.98\00:45:17.38 And I actually taught to... 00:45:17.41\00:45:22.52 it was Dan Miller at that time, 00:45:22.55\00:45:24.95 he was the-- 00:45:24.99\00:45:26.32 You call Dan a young man. 00:45:26.35\00:45:29.19 Well, he'd probably love that. 00:45:29.22\00:45:31.93 But he was there and I said something, 00:45:31.96\00:45:36.46 I'm about being interested 00:45:36.50\00:45:38.70 and he said, I can get you in touch with the man 00:45:38.73\00:45:40.87 that would, you know, 00:45:40.90\00:45:42.70 he probably love for you come visit camp 00:45:42.74\00:45:45.47 and so Kevin Hoggart was the director at that time 00:45:45.51\00:45:49.94 and he called me and he said, 00:45:49.98\00:45:52.68 well, the biggest part of the ministry is 00:45:52.71\00:45:54.85 what you need to come see. 00:45:54.88\00:45:57.59 And I worked for another company for 22 years 00:45:57.62\00:46:03.22 and I don't know 00:46:03.26\00:46:05.59 if it was Midlife thing or whatever 00:46:05.63\00:46:07.73 but, okay, I need to come visit and so they were having camp 00:46:07.76\00:46:14.14 and so I came down and what impressed me 00:46:14.17\00:46:17.11 was a young man that only heard my name once 00:46:17.14\00:46:22.41 and during the day and half that I was there, 00:46:22.44\00:46:24.68 no matter where I was at, 00:46:24.71\00:46:26.11 if you heard my voice, he would say my name 00:46:26.15\00:46:30.65 and then just all the activities of, 00:46:30.69\00:46:34.52 you know, what they were doing at that time. 00:46:34.56\00:46:37.29 Keith, I've got to ask you because I've heard you say 00:46:37.33\00:46:40.80 that the camps are provided free of charge 00:46:40.83\00:46:43.70 or nominal charge to your campers, 00:46:43.73\00:46:46.77 so fund raising is an important part 00:46:46.80\00:46:48.47 of what you have to do I suspect. 00:46:48.50\00:46:49.97 Yes, it is. Yeah. 00:46:50.01\00:46:51.34 We have 40 representatives all over the country 00:46:51.37\00:46:54.21 and it's because of the kind hearts of donors 00:46:54.24\00:46:56.58 that we're able to operate, not only the camps 00:46:56.61\00:46:59.11 but our library program 00:46:59.15\00:47:00.55 and our Bible program for the blind. 00:47:00.58\00:47:03.02 Now, short of just getting donations 00:47:03.05\00:47:05.69 which you're going to ask for in just a little bit 00:47:05.72\00:47:07.82 and you want to get your pen out 00:47:07.86\00:47:09.19 because we're gonna give some contact information 00:47:09.22\00:47:11.33 just shortly. 00:47:11.36\00:47:12.69 What are the kinds of things you do to raise money? 00:47:12.73\00:47:14.80 What are the kind of events that you have to raise funds? 00:47:14.83\00:47:17.73 And, Norine, you can weigh on this, 00:47:17.77\00:47:19.20 on this also. 00:47:19.23\00:47:20.74 Well, sometimes we do a Walmart event 00:47:20.77\00:47:23.51 and raise money that way, visit churches. 00:47:23.54\00:47:27.68 Now, you have come with this Walmart event, 00:47:27.71\00:47:29.41 when I think Walmart, I think spent money. 00:47:29.44\00:47:33.52 Well, we'll have maybe a sign out there 00:47:33.55\00:47:37.12 that Christian Record Service 00:47:37.15\00:47:39.59 and you know, we're raising money for blind camps mostly. 00:47:39.62\00:47:43.63 And my-- 00:47:43.66\00:47:48.13 my greatest fund raising is through our Lions Clubs 00:47:48.16\00:47:51.53 and some even corners 00:47:51.57\00:47:55.84 and then some several businesses 00:47:55.87\00:47:59.51 in my state. 00:47:59.54\00:48:00.88 So there are lot of groups 00:48:00.91\00:48:02.24 that feed into what you're trying to do 00:48:02.28\00:48:03.61 and buying this, and that's wonderful. 00:48:03.65\00:48:05.25 We got some more pictures I wanted to go to just now, 00:48:05.28\00:48:07.25 that you can sort of help us with, Norine... 00:48:07.28\00:48:08.78 Okay. 00:48:08.82\00:48:10.39 This is a young man that... 00:48:10.42\00:48:15.06 I met when he was six, I mean he had tumors 00:48:15.09\00:48:19.46 when he was six and lost his eyesight. 00:48:19.49\00:48:22.46 When he was 10 I met him and he had lost his hearing 00:48:22.50\00:48:26.23 because of these tumors. 00:48:26.27\00:48:28.47 And I met him at the school for the blind 00:48:28.50\00:48:31.01 because I visit at the school for the blind often, 00:48:31.04\00:48:34.34 and so then he graduated 00:48:34.38\00:48:38.08 and he remembered camp 00:48:38.11\00:48:44.02 and here he is 21 years old. 00:48:44.05\00:48:46.35 And then his mom calls me 00:48:46.39\00:48:48.76 because of the young man had mentioned camp 00:48:48.79\00:48:53.96 and she says how can we make this happen 00:48:54.00\00:48:56.77 because he never asked for anything 00:48:56.80\00:48:59.03 and he asked to go to camp. 00:48:59.07\00:49:00.60 At 21?
