Yeah, indeed. 00:02:56.78\00:02:58.78 Remember that. Very, very true. 00:02:58.81\00:03:01.10 So it kind of followed you 00:03:01.13\00:03:02.37 then of course you landed at Adventist Review, 00:03:02.40\00:03:03.64 you've been for how many years now? 00:03:03.67\00:03:04.91 It will be 18 years this summer. 00:03:04.94\00:03:06.54 Wow, time gets away from you, doesn't it? 00:03:06.57\00:03:08.47 Yeah, it's actually now just equaling 00:03:08.50\00:03:11.46 the amount of time I spent in pastoral ministry, 00:03:11.49\00:03:13.46 so kind of got a split career here. 00:03:13.49\00:03:15.54 Back then you were telling stories about your young sons, 00:03:15.57\00:03:17.66 which you have told me recent, not so young anymore. 00:03:17.69\00:03:19.86 No, they're actually in their mid 20s now 00:03:19.89\00:03:22.76 and both married. 00:03:22.79\00:03:23.82 Wow. 00:03:23.85\00:03:24.88 As of last summer two weddings in 11 weeks. 00:03:24.91\00:03:27.72 Wow. 00:03:27.75\00:03:29.68 It gets you moving around. Yeah, we were moved. 00:03:29.71\00:03:31.24 Claude, you are the marketing director. 00:03:31.27\00:03:34.85 But you're not from the United States, 00:03:36.37\00:03:37.88 you weren't born in United States. 00:03:37.91\00:03:38.94 I was not born in the United States 00:03:38.97\00:03:40.00 that is correct. 00:03:40.03\00:03:41.06 I was born on the island of Mauritius 00:03:41.09\00:03:42.84 in the Indian Ocean. 00:03:42.87\00:03:44.46 You know, that's a "quiz question" 00:03:44.49\00:03:45.55 where is Mauritius? 00:03:45.58\00:03:46.62 Nobody would know 00:03:46.65\00:03:47.69 and most people don't know where it is. 00:03:47.72\00:03:49.10 Yeah. 00:03:49.13\00:03:50.16 It's about 500 miles east of the great island of Madagascar. 00:03:50.19\00:03:55.75 My parents served a term as missionaries there 00:03:55.78\00:03:59.22 and so I was born as a Mauritian 00:03:59.25\00:04:01.43 and still I'm to this day. 00:04:01.46\00:04:03.04 Praise the Lord, yeah. 00:04:03.07\00:04:04.10 But my folks came from Switzerland. 00:04:04.13\00:04:06.43 Yes. 00:04:06.46\00:04:08.00 I figure this, either your parents were missionaries 00:04:08.03\00:04:09.56 or somebody fell off the boat. 00:04:09.59\00:04:10.95 Yeah. That's right. 00:04:10.98\00:04:12.17 Exactly, especially in those days. 00:04:12.20\00:04:14.23 Very, very much it though. 00:04:14.26\00:04:16.31 Bill, Adventist family as far as growing up 00:04:16.34\00:04:18.16 of Adventist background? 00:04:18.19\00:04:19.80 Yep, my dad came from an Adventist family 00:04:19.83\00:04:22.19 and my mom was raised as a Roman Catholic, 00:04:22.22\00:04:26.22 became an Adventist as a teenager 00:04:26.25\00:04:28.15 along with my grandmother. 00:04:28.18\00:04:29.86 And those two met because my dad taught 00:04:29.89\00:04:32.22 church school around the corner from a conference office 00:04:32.25\00:04:34.51 where she worked as a secretary. 00:04:34.54\00:04:35.57 Have mercy. 00:04:35.60\00:04:36.63 And so my parents were-- 00:04:36.66\00:04:39.87 Adventist education brought them together 00:04:39.90\00:04:41.91 and kind of created a family where 00:04:41.94\00:04:45.05 Adventist education was sort of the big thing for us. 00:04:45.08\00:04:47.39 My dad taught for the Adventist Church 00:04:47.42\00:04:49.88 for almost 50 years. 00:04:49.91\00:04:51.27 And my mom worked in conference and union and college 00:04:51.30\00:04:54.67 offices for about 40 years. 00:04:54.70\00:04:56.84 Yeah, now you're a Northeast guy. 00:04:56.87\00:04:58.08 Yeah, I grew up in mostly in Massachusetts. 00:04:58.11\00:05:00.56 I was born in Upstate New York in Cortland. 00:05:00.59\00:05:02.78 Pastored in Upstate New York and in New England 00:05:02.81\00:05:05.99 and along with several other places 00:05:06.02\00:05:07.53 including Michigan in the Northwest 00:05:07.56\00:05:09.05 but I count myself a Yankee, yeah. 00:05:09.08\00:05:12.33 Oh, Praise the Lord. Not a New York Yankee. 00:05:12.36\00:05:13.88 Now just for the record. 00:05:13.91\00:05:15.63 Yeah, from being from the Northeast 00:05:15.66\00:05:17.18 I know what your team is 00:05:17.21\00:05:19.16 and of course having spent 30 years in New York 00:05:19.19\00:05:20.75 you know, what my team is-- 00:05:20.78\00:05:21.81 I do-- I do, I won't go there. 00:05:21.84\00:05:23.34 That may be the only area 00:05:23.37\00:05:24.43 which we would disagree on this particular program. 00:05:24.46\00:05:27.22 But having said so, 00:05:27.25\00:05:29.08 your mother was an ex Roman Catholic. 00:05:29.11\00:05:31.46 You went out and married an ex Roman Catholic. 00:05:31.49\00:05:33.26 In fact my wife who grew up 00:05:33.29\00:05:35.62 about 30 miles west of where I did. 00:05:35.65\00:05:37.91 We never met until we went to work together 00:05:37.94\00:05:41.11 at the conference youth camp. 00:05:41.14\00:05:42.34 She has just been baptized a year earlier 00:05:42.37\00:05:44.95 in the last evangelistic series 00:05:44.98\00:05:47.45 that Mark Finley held in New England 00:05:47.48\00:05:49.09 before moving to the Midwest. 00:05:49.12\00:05:50.58 She and her family were devout Roman Catholics, 00:05:50.61\00:05:52.81 were attracted to a focus on the word of God 00:05:52.84\00:05:55.70 particularly on prophecy, 00:05:55.73\00:05:57.46 and came into the church in 1978. 00:05:57.49\00:06:00.73 I met her at summer camp in 1979. 00:06:00.76\00:06:04.22 I was the assistant director 00:06:04.25\00:06:06.36 helping to mentor the new younger counselors, 00:06:06.39\00:06:09.48 you know, and got to know Debbie 00:06:09.51\00:06:11.98 and she has brought that focus on soul winning and evangelism 00:06:12.01\00:06:17.80 into my life in very vivid detail. 00:06:17.83\00:06:19.92 Because she's always looking 00:06:19.95\00:06:22.21 at the way our church responds to people 00:06:22.24\00:06:24.79 who didn't grow up in this faith as I did 00:06:24.82\00:06:26.96 and that combination is really been a great blessing 00:06:26.99\00:06:29.44 to our ministry together. 00:06:29.47\00:06:30.50 Yeah, yeah. 00:06:30.53\00:06:31.56 One more question before I go to Claude. 00:06:31.59\00:06:32.98 People always ask us 00:06:33.01\00:06:35.06 they don't know how people get to certain positions, 00:06:35.09\00:06:38.11 if they are voted, if they are appointed, if they are elected. 00:06:38.14\00:06:40.00 How does one become editor of Adventist Review? 00:06:40.03\00:06:42.52 Well, I think God has something to do with this. 00:06:42.55\00:06:44.78 And it certain-- it certainly doesn't come by any devising 00:06:46.42\00:06:51.07 I was shocked when they invited me to come 00:06:51.10\00:06:53.37 and serve as an associate first. 00:06:53.40\00:06:55.24 I had always been involved in writing and in journalism 00:06:55.27\00:06:59.11 but with the actual appointment 00:06:59.14\00:07:01.76 as editor of Adventist Review and Adventist World 00:07:01.79\00:07:05.02 comes as an election by, 00:07:05.05\00:07:07.21 the General Conference Executive Committee. 00:07:07.24\00:07:09.33 It's not at the same time 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.00 as the General Conference session each year 00:07:11.03\00:07:12.96 but it's held at the first annual counsel 00:07:12.99\00:07:15.45 and each, every five years the church gets to decide 00:07:15.48\00:07:18.85 whether they want to continue with that team 00:07:18.88\00:07:21.01 or bring in do leadership 00:07:21.04\00:07:22.44 to lead those media ministries of the church. 00:07:22.47\00:07:25.75 And so we work until the Lord tells us, 00:07:25.78\00:07:29.98 otherwise in the brethren tell us otherwise. 00:07:30.01\00:07:32.44 Praise God. Praise God. 00:07:32.47\00:07:33.75 A double question for Claude also because 00:07:33.78\00:07:36.01 obviously your parents were Adventists, 00:07:36.04\00:07:37.18 they were missionaries. 00:07:37.21\00:07:38.30 Where they the first generation of Adventist in your family? 00:07:38.33\00:07:41.25 They were yes indeed. 00:07:41.28\00:07:43.10 My father had actually come from Switzerland 00:07:43.13\00:07:45.99 to the United States in the years before the war 00:07:46.02\00:07:49.51 and had become an Adventist here in the US 00:07:49.54\00:07:51.82 and studied at the Pacific Union College. 00:07:51.85\00:07:54.61 Graduated from Pacific Union College, 00:07:54.64\00:07:56.92 then graduated from at the time 00:07:56.95\00:07:58.73 Potomac University in Takoma Park 00:07:58.76\00:08:02.21 just outside of Washington. 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.13 And he was one of the first people 00:08:04.16\00:08:06.57 to return to Europe 00:08:06.60\00:08:08.40 after the war on one of those ships 00:08:08.43\00:08:11.01 that had finally been given over to civil traffic. 00:08:11.04\00:08:16.28 And he had a burden for his country 00:08:16.31\00:08:18.41 and went back to Switzerland 00:08:18.44\00:08:19.67 and from there after few years he-- 00:08:19.70\00:08:21.62 he was invited to go to Mauritius as a missionary. 00:08:21.65\00:08:25.08 Praise the Lord. 00:08:25.11\00:08:26.14 Pastor has a burden for Switzerland 00:08:26.17\00:08:27.52 end up in Mauritius. 00:08:27.55\00:08:28.58 But we praise the God for missionaries 00:08:32.16\00:08:35.16 and we're gonna date this program just a little bit 00:08:35.19\00:08:36.69 but I want to ask this question 00:08:36.72\00:08:37.82 because you're about to get very busy both of you 00:08:37.85\00:08:40.34 'cause General Conference session is coming. 00:08:40.37\00:08:42.19 And you're gonna be producing a whole lot of material. 00:08:42.22\00:08:44.56 Talk to us little bit about 00:08:44.59\00:08:46.17 what's gonna be happening during General Conference? 00:08:46.20\00:08:47.57 Well, there's several key pieces to what we produce 00:08:47.60\00:08:50.38 in preparation for 00:08:50.41\00:08:51.94 and at the General Conference session. 00:08:51.97\00:08:53.91 Since 1863 in the very first General Conference session 00:08:53.94\00:08:58.51 whose minutes you can read in the Adventist Review 00:08:58.54\00:09:02.18 then known as the Review and Herald. 00:09:02.21\00:09:04.62 The Review has been the record keeper 00:09:04.65\00:09:07.99 of General Conference sessions 00:09:08.02\00:09:09.65 and actually almost 90 years ago 00:09:09.68\00:09:12.65 officially voted to that designation 00:09:12.68\00:09:14.79 to carry the proceedings, 00:09:14.82\00:09:16.75 the minutes of all the churches business sessions. 00:09:16.78\00:09:19.83 In those days it was every four years, 00:09:19.86\00:09:21.70 now it's every five, so we have both legal 00:09:21.73\00:09:25.33 and readership responsibility to carry the news 00:09:25.36\00:09:29.37 and the proceedings 00:09:29.40\00:09:30.92 of these important gatherings to the world church. 00:09:30.95\00:09:33.62 We do that by preparing before each session 00:09:33.65\00:09:36.67 what we call a supplement, that doesn't mean a lot 00:09:36.70\00:09:39.27 and there's nothing to do with vitamins. 00:09:39.30\00:09:40.66 It's actually all of the departmental reports 00:09:40.69\00:09:43.42 for the previous five years, 00:09:43.45\00:09:45.12 so before people come and decide 00:09:45.15\00:09:46.86 whether they want the same leadership 00:09:46.89\00:09:48.40 for the next five years or to change it, 00:09:48.43\00:09:50.31 they get to read a candid assessment 00:09:50.34\00:09:52.70 of what's happened in that area, 00:09:52.73\00:09:54.23 how it's grown or developed or changed. 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.89 So you do that, I thought that came out of secretariat. 00:09:55.92\00:09:57.68 No, we prepare that supplement 00:09:57.71\00:09:59.67 and the secretariat also prepares 00:09:59.70\00:10:02.03 explanatory materials but that's supplement 00:10:02.06\00:10:04.61 which is about an 80 page document. 00:10:04.64\00:10:06.80 It comes out of our office. 00:10:06.83\00:10:08.10 And then we produce eight daily bulletins 00:10:08.13\00:10:11.47 at the General Conference session. 00:10:11.50\00:10:13.49 Each of those is 48 pages 00:10:13.52\00:10:16.07 and if you think producing a 48 page magazine 00:10:16.10\00:10:19.49 every 24 hours is challenging. 00:10:19.52\00:10:22.70 I'll invite you to come and join us 00:10:22.73\00:10:24.80 because it stresses everybody's work load and work day 00:10:24.83\00:10:29.86 about as much as you can imagine. 00:10:29.89\00:10:31.10 And fortunately God always brings us 00:10:31.13\00:10:34.10 people of talent and interest to come 00:10:34.13\00:10:37.22 and augment our staff with volunteers. 00:10:37.25\00:10:39.90 We literally have this year a photographer from Germany, 00:10:39.93\00:10:43.72 a professor from the Philippines, 00:10:43.75\00:10:46.23 teachers from various Adventist schools 00:10:46.26\00:10:48.52 around the country. 00:10:48.55\00:10:49.67 We've got Korean editors and Spanish translators. 00:10:49.70\00:10:53.34 And we've got a global team coming together 00:10:53.37\00:10:55.59 to help us get this crucial job done 00:10:55.62\00:10:58.11 48 pages everyday for eight days. 00:10:58.14\00:11:01.10 That's exciting. 00:11:01.13\00:11:02.19 Now that's available to the general publish, 00:11:02.22\00:11:04.16 I think there're other things just available 00:11:04.19\00:11:05.67 to the delegates, is that not so? 00:11:05.70\00:11:07.21 The supplement, it goes to the delegates. 00:11:07.24\00:11:09.46 It's also mailed to all of our subscribers, 00:11:09.49\00:11:12.15 so all of our subscribers get that supplement. 00:11:12.18\00:11:14.43 They get to read 00:11:14.46\00:11:15.49 all the departmental work as well. 00:11:15.52\00:11:16.93 You'll get one. I'll make sure you'll get it. 00:11:16.96\00:11:19.47 I want to thank you. 00:11:19.50\00:11:20.53 Claude, anything that you are assigned to do 00:11:20.56\00:11:22.31 specifically during the General Conference time? 00:11:22.34\00:11:24.39 Well, the General Conference time for us 00:11:24.42\00:11:26.26 is of course a very exciting events 00:11:26.29\00:11:28.20 to make the Adventist Review 00:11:28.23\00:11:30.02 known to our readership around the world. 00:11:30.05\00:11:33.33 And specifically 00:11:33.36\00:11:35.35 I will be in charge of making sure 00:11:35.38\00:11:37.13 that's every morning 00:11:37.16\00:11:38.27 the Adventist Review daily bulletins 00:11:38.30\00:11:41.18 will be delivered to the delegates 00:11:41.21\00:11:42.94 and to the visitors. 00:11:42.97\00:11:44.26 But as well I will be running a program 00:11:44.29\00:11:46.76 with kids between the age of 14 and 20 00:11:46.79\00:11:49.77 who will actually be selling 00:11:49.80\00:11:51.86 the daily bulletins to the visitors 00:11:51.89\00:11:54.75 and making the magazine better known, 00:11:54.78\00:11:58.19 selling subscriptions 00:11:58.22\00:11:59.62 and just creating a stronger brand 00:11:59.65\00:12:01.72 and recognition for the magazine in general. 00:12:01.75\00:12:03.95 Yes. 00:12:03.98\00:12:05.01 So if you are out there at General Conference time, 00:12:05.04\00:12:07.18 you see young persons running around with a review, 00:12:07.21\00:12:09.63 a full size review and I'll say what that means, 00:12:09.66\00:12:11.42 I'll explain that in just a little bit. 00:12:11.45\00:12:12.83 Buy one because 00:12:12.86\00:12:14.37 is there any other way to get them? 00:12:14.40\00:12:15.96 Actually you need have some role either as a delegate 00:12:15.99\00:12:20.38 or official guest or we keep that cost at cost, 00:12:20.41\00:12:24.20 so that we can make it widely available 00:12:24.23\00:12:26.62 to everyone who comes to the session. 00:12:26.65\00:12:27.97 Yeah, I always look forward to them 00:12:28.00\00:12:29.03 because I tend to come on with a stack of that stuff 00:12:29.06\00:12:31.46 because it gives you kind of a deep brief 00:12:31.49\00:12:33.22 of all of the actions certainly and you can kind of codify 00:12:33.25\00:12:36.03 if you wanted to just have that information 00:12:36.06\00:12:37.51 off all the actions that took place 00:12:37.54\00:12:38.94 because there's a lot of stuff going on during a day 00:12:38.97\00:12:40.39 that we don't get too. 00:12:40.42\00:12:41.45 It's an amazing number of things happening 00:12:41.48\00:12:43.46 at all kinds of venues there. 00:12:43.49\00:12:45.14 We send reporters out. They cover all of those. 00:12:45.17\00:12:47.79 We work collaboratively 00:12:47.82\00:12:48.91 with other media in the building 00:12:48.94\00:12:50.80 and we come back with both web and print and video segments 00:12:50.83\00:12:55.69 that help give people a sense of this enormous gathering. 00:12:55.72\00:12:59.15 And what it does to build the faith 00:12:59.18\00:13:01.15 of the global church. 00:13:01.18\00:13:02.97 For each us who gets to be in the middle of that 00:13:03.00\00:13:05.79 even though it's stressful at times, 00:13:05.82\00:13:07.67 it's also very much faith building. 00:13:07.70\00:13:08.91 It is very much. 00:13:08.94\00:13:09.97 I think every Adventist ought to get at least one. 00:13:10.00\00:13:12.33 Because it makes you, 00:13:12.36\00:13:14.14 as a pastor friend of mine used to say humbly proud 00:13:14.17\00:13:17.34 that you serve the Adventists 00:13:17.37\00:13:18.68 and to see the reach of the church 00:13:18.71\00:13:20.47 and the expanse of the church 00:13:20.50\00:13:21.70 and the diversity of the church. 00:13:21.73\00:13:23.20 And the language and the colors 00:13:23.23\00:13:24.58 and the flavors and the textures, 00:13:24.61\00:13:25.85 you know you're immersing all these for 10 days 00:13:25.88\00:13:28.66 and you come away feeling very proud and very satisfied 00:13:28.69\00:13:32.12 that God is doing a great work world wide. 00:13:32.15\00:13:34.45 In 2000 up in Toronto the General Conference session 00:13:34.48\00:13:37.40 my parents were then living were able to join us up there. 00:13:37.43\00:13:40.98 And I'll never forget standing in the top tier of the sky dome 00:13:41.01\00:13:46.75 in Toronto with my mom. 00:13:46.78\00:13:48.26 One who'd become an Adventist as a teenager 00:13:48.29\00:13:51.13 in a relatively small church in Upstate New York. 00:13:51.16\00:13:54.47 And she stood there and looked out 00:13:54.50\00:13:56.16 at 60,000 Seventh-day Adventists 00:13:56.19\00:13:58.67 listen to the music which was such a part of her life. 00:13:58.70\00:14:01.63 And she turned to me and she said oh, 00:14:01.66\00:14:03.91 she said I just wish my mom could have seen this. 00:14:03.94\00:14:06.78 We always thought of ourselves as part of a little faith. 00:14:06.81\00:14:09.95 Just a small group of people and out to see 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.85 what God is doing on a global scale. 00:14:12.88\00:14:15.76 I just watched her just well up with emotion 00:14:15.79\00:14:18.31 and for me it was real special moment 00:14:18.34\00:14:19.89 to share that with her and to realize that 00:14:19.92\00:14:21.82 what I sometimes take for granted. 00:14:21.85\00:14:23.79 The scope and the scale and the size and the color 00:14:23.82\00:14:26.68 is tremendously impressive to people 00:14:26.71\00:14:28.87 who don't get to live with that. 00:14:28.90\00:14:30.05 Yes. Yes. Yes, my mother born in Toronto. 00:14:30.08\00:14:33.60 We grew up in Buffalo New York 90 miles south 00:14:33.63\00:14:35.78 and baptized her in the church myself. 00:14:35.81\00:14:38.09 So when we were there, I went to Buffalo 00:14:38.12\00:14:40.07 and got her and brought her back 00:14:40.10\00:14:41.48 'cause I wanted her to see one. 00:14:41.51\00:14:43.79 You get the same thing. Okay. 00:20:15.34\00:20:16.69 Your background your own personal background 00:20:18.78\00:20:20.56 was is it ministerial track 00:20:20.59\00:20:22.11 or did you come to the Review some other way? 00:20:22.14\00:20:24.98 Well, I have a dual track. I was trained as a pastor. 00:20:25.01\00:20:28.83 I'm a graduate of Andrews University 00:20:28.86\00:20:30.47 and this is where I got to meet Bill. 00:20:30.50\00:20:33.13 In seminary. 00:20:33.16\00:20:34.19 In seminary but I also graduated 00:20:34.22\00:20:37.50 with masters of business administration 00:20:37.53\00:20:40.15 and went into business management 00:20:40.18\00:20:42.70 and specifically marketing 00:20:42.73\00:20:44.07 and sales management for seven years. 00:20:44.10\00:20:46.18 I started my career in Canada 00:20:46.21\00:20:48.12 as a sales of marketing executive. 00:20:48.15\00:20:50.48 And in fact at the end of those seven years 00:20:50.51\00:20:53.50 I was sales manager for 00:20:53.53\00:20:56.51 one of Canada's largest outdoor advertising company. 00:20:56.54\00:21:00.61 And that gave me of course a lot of experience in sales 00:21:00.64\00:21:04.78 and processes and management process 00:21:04.81\00:21:07.35 which served me well 00:21:07.38\00:21:09.24 in the capacity where I'm today. 00:21:09.27\00:21:11.64 Excellent. Excellent. 00:21:11.67\00:21:13.19 So, Bill, your degree is not in-- 00:21:13.22\00:21:15.85 your pastoral degree-- 00:21:15.88\00:21:17.44 Did you do anything with the journalism 00:21:17.47\00:21:18.85 prior to coming to a Review? 00:21:18.88\00:21:20.35 Well, I like a lot of people who end up in rating careers. 00:21:20.38\00:21:24.64 I had a degree in English on the undergraduate level. 00:21:24.67\00:21:28.08 And worked in the variety 00:21:28.11\00:21:29.56 of campus public relation offices 00:21:29.59\00:21:31.79 and did turning out ad journals 00:21:31.82\00:21:34.15 and magazines for various entities. 00:21:34.18\00:21:36.71 When I went into pastoral ministry, 00:21:36.74\00:21:39.31 I guess you would probably say, 00:21:39.34\00:21:40.79 I focused on written things a lot. 00:21:40.82\00:21:43.63 And as I hadn't thought about it this way 00:21:43.66\00:21:46.21 until I was invited to come to the Review 00:21:46.24\00:21:48.09 and I realized I guess writing is a lot of what I do, 00:21:48.12\00:21:50.98 it's the way I organize life. 00:21:51.01\00:21:52.95 And Bill Johnson, my predecessor 00:21:52.98\00:21:55.31 used to use an expression that 00:21:55.34\00:21:57.44 the best writers are the compulsive ones. 00:21:57.47\00:21:59.64 The ones who have to-- 00:21:59.67\00:22:00.86 who have to write in order to feel good about life 00:22:00.89\00:22:03.44 and I guess you put me in that category. 00:22:03.47\00:22:05.86 I would add along the way 00:22:05.89\00:22:08.73 life experience as a pastor 00:22:08.76\00:22:11.38 is a crucial piece of preparation 00:22:11.41\00:22:13.62 for the role that I'm in right now. 00:22:13.65\00:22:15.41 Because what readers are asking for 00:22:15.44\00:22:19.34 and they tell us this 00:22:19.37\00:22:20.40 in the thousand of letters a year 00:22:20.43\00:22:22.83 is a journal that ministers to them 00:22:22.86\00:22:26.67 when they can't get to church because of age or illness, 00:22:26.70\00:22:30.30 when at times they find themselves estranged 00:22:30.33\00:22:32.99 from a local congregation. 00:22:33.02\00:22:34.47 This magazine can still go into their home 00:22:34.50\00:22:36.91 and can still speak the gospel 00:22:36.94\00:22:38.99 and still speaks the Three Angels' Messages 00:22:39.02\00:22:40.92 into situations where maybe your spouses isn't supportive 00:22:40.95\00:22:44.00 or kids don't want to go to church 00:22:44.03\00:22:45.97 or there is a lot of difficult family circumstances. 00:22:46.00\00:22:49.11 This magazine is that pastoral presence week by week. 00:22:49.14\00:22:53.01 And so it really is was a tremendous blessing 00:22:53.04\00:22:55.73 that I didn't know God was preparing me for to 00:22:55.76\00:22:58.10 bring me through those many years 00:22:58.13\00:22:59.93 that my wife and I just loved in pastoral ministry 00:22:59.96\00:23:02.51 as I was sharing with you a few moments ago. 00:23:02.54\00:23:04.83 There are days when I miss it a lot still 00:23:04.86\00:23:07.88 and yet I learned that for many people 00:23:07.91\00:23:11.59 the team that we've been able to assemble 00:23:11.62\00:23:13.44 including others with pastoral experience 00:23:13.47\00:23:16.40 speaks that into the lives 00:23:16.43\00:23:17.78 of so many thousands of readers. 00:23:17.81\00:23:19.49 You've also just given us a context for viewing 00:23:19.52\00:23:21.94 the Review as it is currently stands 00:23:21.97\00:23:24.40 that it's not a hard news magazine per se. 00:23:24.43\00:23:28.06 It though does had that feature 00:23:28.09\00:23:29.79 or it is not one of features per se, 00:23:29.82\00:23:31.88 though it does have that, 00:23:31.91\00:23:32.94 but it's also a way to connect the person who doesn't get out 00:23:32.97\00:23:36.44 or who needs to know 00:23:36.47\00:23:37.50 what's going on the other side of the world 00:23:37.53\00:23:38.66 or what's going on even across the country 00:23:38.69\00:23:41.08 to kind of connect them to the whole. 00:23:41.11\00:23:43.04 With the very first edition of Present Truth 00:23:43.07\00:23:45.46 which was the immediate magazine 00:23:45.49\00:23:47.35 out of which Adventist Review today comes, 00:23:47.38\00:23:49.36 166 years ago this summer. 00:23:49.39\00:23:52.63 Oldest, continuously published religious journal 00:23:52.66\00:23:56.42 in North America now. 00:23:56.45\00:23:57.71 We just passed-- 00:23:57.74\00:23:58.77 And that is something to which you should be justly proud. 00:23:58.80\00:24:00.91 Well, we're proud but it's actually a recognition 00:24:00.94\00:24:04.16 that God has a mission for this magazine. 00:24:04.19\00:24:06.27 James White wrote in his very first page 00:24:06.30\00:24:09.07 that the mission of this magazine 00:24:09.10\00:24:10.95 was to gather the scattered flock. 00:24:10.98\00:24:14.35 There's a pastoral image right there. 00:24:14.38\00:24:16.40 Yes. It's gathering the flock. 00:24:16.43\00:24:18.19 It was recognizing that God's people 00:24:18.22\00:24:20.52 needed something to pull them together. 00:24:20.55\00:24:22.11 And at the time he began publishing, 00:24:22.14\00:24:23.93 you could count the number of Sabbath keeping Adventist, 00:24:23.96\00:24:27.37 they weren't yet Seventh-day Adventists. 00:24:27.40\00:24:29.99 You could count them in maybe 500 persons 00:24:30.02\00:24:33.23 scattered across the northern tier of the United States. 00:24:33.26\00:24:36.41 This magazine became the glue 00:24:36.44\00:24:38.71 that started tying them to each other. 00:24:38.74\00:24:40.85 I tease the General Conference officers 00:24:40.88\00:24:43.82 fairly often at our board meetings 00:24:43.85\00:24:45.67 that actually if you want to ask 00:24:45.70\00:24:47.97 how did the Seventh-day Adventist church come to be. 00:24:48.00\00:24:50.70 It was that a bunch of Review readers 00:24:50.73\00:24:52.55 got together and formed the denomination 00:24:52.58\00:24:54.58 and that's actually about what happened 00:24:54.61\00:24:57.14 by the time 1863 comes along. 00:24:57.17\00:24:59.46 There are about 3,000 people reading the Review 00:24:59.49\00:25:02.93 and that's about the number who became the nucleus 00:25:02.96\00:25:05.66 of the modern Seventh-day Adventist movement. 00:25:05.69\00:25:08.00 And that magazine gone through so many changes 00:25:08.03\00:25:12.15 and over the years has become 00:25:12.18\00:25:14.18 woven into the fabric of what it means 00:25:14.21\00:25:16.89 to be part of this great Advent movement. 00:25:16.92\00:25:19.74 I as a child Friday nights, 00:25:19.77\00:25:22.44 I would lie on the floor in the living room 00:25:22.47\00:25:24.64 beside the fire place and open a magazine 00:25:24.67\00:25:27.76 I was eight, nine years old reading a magazine. 00:25:27.79\00:25:31.21 I had no idea that 50 years later 00:25:31.24\00:25:33.65 I would somehow be involved in keeping that magazine 00:25:33.68\00:25:36.95 in front of tens of thousands of readers around the world. 00:25:36.98\00:25:40.84 God is at works in ways 00:25:40.87\00:25:42.49 when we have no idea that He's at work. 00:25:42.52\00:25:44.70 Very true. Very true and preparing you. 00:25:44.73\00:25:46.63 So let's walk back from those days to 00:25:46.66\00:25:49.25 'cause the magazine has certainly gone 00:25:49.28\00:25:50.62 any number of facelifts and then differentiate for us 00:25:50.65\00:25:54.77 sort of demythologize or demystify 00:25:54.80\00:25:57.66 Adventist World and Review 00:25:57.69\00:25:59.13 because a lot of people get those kind of mixed up 00:25:59.16\00:26:01.07 and you carry both of those hats, 00:26:01.10\00:26:02.33 so let's walk through that and separate the two. 00:26:02.36\00:26:05.06 In fact, you know, Adventist Review is 00:26:05.09\00:26:07.63 by far the older journal as I mention now 166 years old 00:26:07.66\00:26:12.28 and until 10 years ago a really the only edition 00:26:12.31\00:26:16.57 put out by the General Conference 00:26:16.60\00:26:18.15 at a couple of regional variations. 00:26:18.18\00:26:20.18 However 10 years ago 00:26:20.21\00:26:22.15 the General Conference leadership decided to take 00:26:22.18\00:26:25.41 the concept of a world wide magazine 00:26:25.44\00:26:28.16 that would be distributed free of charge 00:26:28.19\00:26:30.65 to membership all around the globe 00:26:30.68\00:26:32.89 and launch that forward. 00:26:32.92\00:26:34.15 And so this September 00:26:34.18\00:26:35.88 we're celebrating 10 years of Adventist World. 00:26:35.91\00:26:38.03 Ten years. That's right. 00:26:38.06\00:26:39.30 Adventist World magazine 00:26:39.33\00:26:41.13 is now significantly the largest journal 00:26:41.16\00:26:46.13 published by the church. 00:26:46.16\00:26:47.82 And he's my good friend Cliff Goldstein that 00:26:47.85\00:26:50.35 when you produce only once a quarter 00:26:50.38\00:26:52.17 in the adult Bible study guide it doesn't really "count." 00:26:52.20\00:26:56.42 In fact there a million and a half copies 00:26:56.45\00:27:00.23 of this magazine printed every month around the world. 00:27:00.26\00:27:03.00 That's so-- 00:27:03.03\00:27:04.06 And we best estimates and conservative estimates 00:27:04.09\00:27:06.99 suggest that somewhere between 00:27:07.02\00:27:08.72 seven and eight million Adventists every month 00:27:08.75\00:27:11.98 are within arms reach of this magazine. 00:27:12.01\00:27:14.19 We know that it gets 00:27:14.22\00:27:15.28 anywhere between 6 and 10 different touches 00:27:15.31\00:27:18.53 in many places around the globe. 00:27:18.56\00:27:20.29 It's handed house to house 00:27:20.32\00:27:22.10 in some cases prison cell to prison cell 00:27:22.13\00:27:24.53 because we know the ministry it does 00:27:24.56\00:27:26.14 in many parts of the world report. 00:27:26.17\00:27:28.11 Incarcerates are sharing this magazine 00:27:28.14\00:27:30.20 and coming to faith. 00:27:30.23\00:27:31.29 So you get anecdotal stuff back on that. 00:27:31.32\00:27:33.13 Not just anecdotal, we've got a lot of actual metrics 00:27:33.16\00:27:35.66 in now about persons who join the church 00:27:35.69\00:27:38.41 from a magazine that really was never intended 00:27:38.44\00:27:40.64 to be an evangelistic journal. 00:27:40.67\00:27:42.31 It was there to do that same work. 00:27:42.34\00:27:43.63 Yes. 00:27:43.66\00:27:44.69 Gathering the scattered flock. 00:27:44.72\00:27:46.79 Adventist Review, the old and journal 00:27:46.82\00:27:49.94 that it'd been there all along 00:27:49.97\00:27:51.23 the good old Review still continued 00:27:51.26\00:27:54.35 but Adventist World came along 10 years ago 00:27:54.38\00:27:57.60 on a massive scale and became fairly quickly 00:27:57.63\00:28:01.03 one of the largest products 00:28:01.06\00:28:03.12 produced by the General Conference. 00:28:03.15\00:28:05.03 I will tell you that the man to my right 00:28:05.06\00:28:06.84 is almost single-handedly responsible for creating 00:28:06.87\00:28:10.42 the first monthly distribution system 00:28:10.45\00:28:14.02 of any journal that this world churches had. 00:28:14.05\00:28:17.21 And that means going into many regions 00:28:17.24\00:28:20.05 where there was no monthly distribution of anything 00:28:20.08\00:28:22.75 and creating a distribution system. 00:28:22.78\00:28:24.93 So that believers would get 00:28:24.96\00:28:26.90 solid faithful Adventist content, 00:28:26.93\00:28:30.29 Bible content, every month and to build them up. 00:28:30.32\00:28:34.10 It's preached from, elders use it for sermons, 00:28:34.13\00:28:36.69 for Bible studies. 00:28:36.72\00:28:37.86 It becomes that glue 00:28:37.89\00:28:39.41 that does that same thing James White was taking about. 00:28:39.44\00:28:42.12 Gathering the scattered flock. Praise God. 00:28:42.15\00:28:43.96 Claude, let me just switch to you for just a moment. 00:28:43.99\00:28:45.69 Is that printed from any number 00:28:45.72\00:28:47.16 of published houses around that world? 00:28:47.19\00:28:49.11 Has all come out of Review, how is that distributed? 00:28:49.14\00:28:51.08 No, absolutely, 00:28:51.11\00:28:52.26 we have a number of publishing houses 00:28:52.29\00:28:54.04 around the world and printed presses 00:28:54.07\00:28:55.71 actually a total of 19 at the moment 00:28:55.74\00:28:58.79 on all continents. 00:28:58.82\00:29:00.88 I shouldn't say that. 00:29:00.91\00:29:02.29 We do not print in Africa at the moment. 00:29:02.32\00:29:05.25 It's still a bit to expensive 00:29:05.28\00:29:07.79 but certainly we have a very, very rich 00:29:07.82\00:29:10.49 and broad network of printers 00:29:10.52\00:29:13.04 that go all the way from Australia to South Korea 00:29:13.07\00:29:16.53 via South America, Mexico, India and other places. 00:29:16.56\00:29:21.87 Where is it determined 00:29:21.90\00:29:24.17 what the content will be for a given magazine? 00:29:24.20\00:29:27.28 Those decisions are made by 00:29:27.31\00:29:28.90 the editorial team based in Silver Spring 00:29:28.93\00:29:31.18 at the General Conference headquarters. 00:29:31.21\00:29:32.99 And we deliberately have recruited 00:29:33.02\00:29:36.04 an international cast of characters. 00:29:36.07\00:29:38.84 I like to remind people that when I became editor 00:29:38.87\00:29:42.57 just eight years ago not a single member 00:29:42.60\00:29:45.32 of that team including me spoke a second language. 00:29:45.35\00:29:48.37 Today there are six languages spoken just by our team. 00:29:48.40\00:29:51.91 He personally has about four or five of those but we've-- 00:29:51.94\00:29:54.41 We've recruited people who come from 00:29:57.70\00:29:59.42 a wide range of cultural and linguistic experiences 00:29:59.45\00:30:02.68 and experiences of Adventist faith 00:30:02.71\00:30:05.59 in other regions serving as teachers, 00:30:05.62\00:30:07.84 missionaries their home regions. 00:30:07.87\00:30:10.29 We've deliberately brought together 00:30:10.32\00:30:11.57 very international team to publish and choose content, 00:30:11.60\00:30:15.65 and we recruit through our networks 00:30:15.68\00:30:17.75 of friends and colleagues 00:30:17.78\00:30:19.28 that we've worked with through the years, 00:30:19.31\00:30:20.77 articles that really represent global Adventism. 00:30:20.80\00:30:24.60 That flavor of Adventism, 00:30:24.63\00:30:27.47 the world wide global nature of it 00:30:27.50\00:30:29.95 exists right alongside the weekly Adventist Review 00:30:29.98\00:30:33.46 up until literally one month ago. 00:30:33.49\00:30:36.30 Because in fact until one month ago 00:30:36.33\00:30:38.74 if you'd been an Adventist Reviews subscriber 00:30:38.77\00:30:41.26 as many have for all their lives, 00:30:41.29\00:30:43.40 you were getting two journals one three times a month 00:30:43.43\00:30:48.41 Adventist Review 00:30:48.44\00:30:49.50 and one once a month Adventist World 00:30:49.53\00:30:52.16 and that sequence four journals coming every month 00:30:52.19\00:30:56.69 each of them about 32 pages in length 00:30:56.72\00:31:00.10 was very comforting to many people 00:31:00.13\00:31:01.75 because there was a rhythm based-- 00:31:01.78\00:31:03.27 in fact I think the numbers we saw suggested that 00:31:03.30\00:31:06.37 something as many as 45% of our readers 00:31:06.40\00:31:10.34 had a habit of sitting down on Friday evening 00:31:10.37\00:31:13.56 and Sabbath came and reading the Review. 00:31:13.59\00:31:15.99 This was an important piece. 00:31:16.02\00:31:18.05 Well, several years ago when our board 00:31:18.08\00:31:20.56 and our General Conference leadership that sits 00:31:20.59\00:31:22.49 on our board began looking 00:31:22.52\00:31:23.64 at a strategic vision for these magazines. 00:31:23.67\00:31:26.30 We realize that we needed to do something 00:31:26.33\00:31:28.41 to differentiate them because many people 00:31:28.44\00:31:31.64 mistook one for the other. 00:31:31.67\00:31:33.70 They didn't realize the differences 00:31:33.73\00:31:36.22 between the two and so we began working 00:31:36.25\00:31:38.90 overall carefully planned process 00:31:38.93\00:31:41.49 to try to reach out to a younger audience 00:31:41.52\00:31:45.35 in one case 00:31:45.38\00:31:46.41 and to keep that world wide global audience in the other. 00:31:46.44\00:31:49.57 I've sometimes used the old campfire song 00:31:49.60\00:31:52.43 deep and wide to illustrate the two journals. 00:31:52.46\00:31:56.72 Adventist Review which now exists 00:31:56.75\00:31:58.84 in a much different look in the format. 00:31:58.87\00:32:01.40 Smaller format, a thicker format, 00:32:01.43\00:32:04.85 it's almost the size of three of those 00:32:04.88\00:32:07.05 weekly editions put together 00:32:07.08\00:32:09.12 but that is deliberately designed 00:32:09.15\00:32:11.44 to appeal to a younger 00:32:11.47\00:32:13.81 and group of faithful Adventists 00:32:13.84\00:32:16.88 who are interested in learning about their faith, 00:32:16.91\00:32:19.72 growing as Christians and as disciples 00:32:19.75\00:32:21.87 raising families as faithful families. 00:32:21.90\00:32:24.94 We're out there reaching out to those audiences now 00:32:24.97\00:32:27.08 and helping them understand 00:32:27.11\00:32:28.16 the differences between these two journals. 00:32:28.19\00:32:29.73 Yeah, let me stop you and put a pin on something 00:32:29.76\00:32:32.12 and sort of bring you back to mind in just a little bit. 00:32:32.15\00:32:34.43 Because I know that there are people 00:32:34.46\00:32:35.82 in our audience who when they hear you say 00:32:35.85\00:32:39.20 we are reaching out to a young audience. 00:32:39.23\00:32:41.98 They trance like that okay, it's time to get crazy, 00:32:42.01\00:32:44.38 you know. 00:32:44.41\00:32:45.46 They're saying, it's time to say, 00:32:45.49\00:32:46.57 okay, we're gonna go also deep end 00:32:46.60\00:32:47.95 it's gonna be bells and whistles on, 00:32:47.98\00:32:49.12 a lot of nonsense but talk to me about 00:32:49.15\00:32:52.08 your own personal desire to keep this in the center 00:32:52.11\00:32:55.52 of what we believe that who we are. 00:32:55.55\00:32:57.26 Well, Adventist Review if you're going to be faithful 00:32:57.29\00:33:00.52 to its long and mission and history 00:33:00.55\00:33:04.21 in the life of the church. 00:33:04.24\00:33:05.37 It has to deliver solid straight up Adventist content 00:33:05.40\00:33:08.78 every edition and that's a commitment 00:33:08.81\00:33:11.08 that we've made as a team that I personally made 00:33:11.11\00:33:13.72 that you're going to hear no false notes on the trumpet. 00:33:13.75\00:33:17.23 You're in fact you're going to hear 00:33:17.26\00:33:19.94 those essentials of Adventism, the soon coming of Jesus, 00:33:19.97\00:33:23.16 salvation by faith in Jesus. 00:33:23.19\00:33:25.41 The significance of the Sabbath, 00:33:25.44\00:33:26.99 the significance of an Adventist lifestyle. 00:33:27.02\00:33:29.56 I say regularly in my preaching and in my writing 00:33:29.59\00:33:31.98 I believe in an Adventist lifestyle. 00:33:32.01\00:33:34.11 And I want us to be 00:33:34.14\00:33:35.43 unapologetically be sharing the good news 00:33:35.46\00:33:37.74 of that lifestyle at a time when the world is eager 00:33:37.77\00:33:40.80 for the kind of information about how to live healthy 00:33:40.83\00:33:43.54 and happy and holy lives. 00:33:43.57\00:33:45.14 So when we talk about reaching out 00:33:45.17\00:33:46.91 to a younger audience. 00:33:46.94\00:33:48.40 We're not talking about moving the margins 00:33:48.43\00:33:50.89 or moving the tent stakes. 00:33:50.92\00:33:52.47 We're talking about in fact finding those 00:33:52.50\00:33:54.73 tens, hundreds of thousands of faithful young adult, 00:33:54.76\00:33:58.09 young family Adventists who are eager to know 00:33:58.12\00:34:01.18 how do I get involved in my church. 00:34:01.21\00:34:02.76 How do I get involved in mission? 00:34:02.79\00:34:04.67 Who have sometimes perceived that the church was about 00:34:04.70\00:34:08.22 the older generation and not about them. 00:34:08.25\00:34:10.49 In fact, I've got sons in exactly 00:34:10.52\00:34:13.07 the demographic group that are reaching out 00:34:13.10\00:34:15.64 to right now. 00:34:15.67\00:34:16.76 Young adults, young marrieds, we're trying to help them 00:34:16.79\00:34:19.87 understand God is leading you into leadership positions 00:34:19.90\00:34:23.23 in this church. 00:34:23.26\00:34:24.29 Be prepared, know your faith well. 00:34:24.32\00:34:26.37 Ask the right questions. Get involved in mission. 00:34:26.40\00:34:29.72 Get involved with people who are involved in mission. 00:34:29.75\00:34:32.95 These are the things we're trying to guide people 00:34:32.98\00:34:35.25 to when we talk about reaching out 00:34:35.28\00:34:36.69 to a younger demographic. 00:34:36.72\00:34:38.20 It is not playing with the edges 00:34:38.23\00:34:40.24 or dancing on the edges. 00:34:40.27\00:34:42.21 That's not our interest. 00:34:42.24\00:34:43.27 Our interest is bringing faithful people 00:34:43.30\00:34:46.78 of whatever age into a close alignment 00:34:46.81\00:34:50.10 with God's word and with His church. 00:34:50.13\00:34:51.63 Praise God. We resonate with that. 00:34:51.66\00:34:52.89 And, Claude, you mentioned to that one of the things 00:34:52.92\00:34:55.74 you're gonna be doing at General Conference 00:34:55.77\00:34:56.97 is young people are gonna be selling the magazine. 00:34:57.00\00:34:59.05 So obviously you have gotten buy in from that demographic 00:34:59.08\00:35:03.15 as far as we like what you are selling. 00:35:03.18\00:35:05.50 We're ready to pitch what you are selling. 00:35:05.53\00:35:07.11 - We want to be on board. - Definitely. 00:35:07.14\00:35:08.92 In fact with the new format that we have here, 00:35:08.95\00:35:11.74 we think that we have-- 00:35:11.77\00:35:13.26 we have a real winner. 00:35:13.29\00:35:14.68 The most enthusiastic endorsements 00:35:14.71\00:35:16.68 that we've received so far 00:35:16.71\00:35:17.93 and we're still into that of very early stage. 00:35:17.96\00:35:20.19 We just launched the magazine-- 00:35:20.22\00:35:21.49 the new format this very month 00:35:21.52\00:35:23.50 but the first responses that we've received 00:35:23.53\00:35:26.40 particularly from that demographic segment 00:35:26.43\00:35:28.60 has been nothing short of enthusiastic. 00:35:28.63\00:35:31.43 I mean they are really, really excited to the point where, 00:35:31.46\00:35:35.39 you know, some of them are just subscribing to it on the spot. 00:35:35.42\00:35:40.02 It's fun to walk down a hallway and have people 00:35:40.05\00:35:42.01 who have never said a word to you about the magazine 00:35:42.04\00:35:44.03 you published for all these years. 00:35:44.06\00:35:45.59 Pull you aside and say, I really like that. 00:35:45.62\00:35:47.91 I really want to see that. 00:35:47.94\00:35:49.21 And frankly part of what we've done is very, 00:35:49.24\00:35:52.03 in a very calculated way gone out to say 00:35:52.06\00:35:54.71 we can provide top quality high inertest, 00:35:54.74\00:35:58.11 faithful Adventist content to both our long term 00:35:58.14\00:36:01.39 and our new readers 00:36:01.42\00:36:02.80 from much more attractive price. 00:36:02.83\00:36:03.97 Praise the Lord. 00:36:04.00\00:36:05.03 We've literally cut that price almost in half 00:36:05.06\00:36:07.44 of what it was one month ago. 00:36:07.47\00:36:08.50 All right. 00:36:08.53\00:36:09.56 And that frankly is something we've been aiming at 00:36:09.59\00:36:12.67 for a number of years 00:36:12.70\00:36:13.73 God's created the set of business circumstances 00:36:13.76\00:36:16.78 that's allowed us to do that 00:36:16.81\00:36:18.25 and we're watching people respond. 00:36:18.28\00:36:19.90 Everyday my phone rings with someone saying 00:36:19.93\00:36:23.39 just saw the new magazine, love it, I'm subscribing again 00:36:23.42\00:36:27.20 often if they're used to are coming back. 00:36:27.23\00:36:29.43 I'm sending copies to my family. 00:36:29.46\00:36:31.36 We realize that God is doing something right now 00:36:31.39\00:36:34.09 in giving us a new launch, a new birth 00:36:34.12\00:36:37.11 for one of the oldest things in the Adventist movement. 00:36:37.14\00:36:39.76 Yeah, yeah, very, very exciting. 00:36:39.79\00:36:41.60 One of the things I would say in looking at this it-- 00:36:41.63\00:36:43.89 there's something very user friendly about this side. 00:36:43.92\00:36:46.21 Yes. 00:36:46.24\00:36:47.27 There's something just very warm 00:36:47.30\00:36:48.46 and inviting about this particular size. 00:36:48.49\00:36:50.54 The other one is the more Time magazine 00:36:50.57\00:36:52.38 kind of size and it's just-- 00:36:52.41\00:36:53.85 it's not off putting but there's something 00:36:53.88\00:36:55.49 really nice about this size. 00:36:55.52\00:36:57.20 Well, in fact the tagline that we have chosen 00:36:57.23\00:37:01.13 is it'll travel with you. 00:37:01.16\00:37:03.04 I like that. 00:37:03.07\00:37:04.11 Meaning that you can put in your purse. 00:37:04.14\00:37:05.91 You can put it in your brief case. 00:37:05.94\00:37:07.32 It's a little bit smaller than an iPad. 00:37:07.35\00:37:10.64 And you know, it just easy to take with you and to read 00:37:10.67\00:37:14.38 when you have a two minute break. 00:37:14.41\00:37:16.79 Many of our readers wanted to know 00:37:16.82\00:37:18.52 what are you gonna do about that weekliness 00:37:18.55\00:37:20.95 that I mean, I'm used to reading the whole thing 00:37:20.98\00:37:22.86 through on Friday night 00:37:22.89\00:37:23.92 and there's too much material to read on one Friday night. 00:37:23.95\00:37:26.42 And so we give them a guide 00:37:26.45\00:37:28.01 at the very opening of the edition 00:37:28.04\00:37:30.30 which says here's how to look at this journal 00:37:30.33\00:37:32.51 over four weeks of reading. 00:37:32.54\00:37:34.67 There are four distinct sections of this magazine 00:37:34.70\00:37:37.98 that each correspond to a week of the month. 00:37:38.01\00:37:40.30 And you'll find high quality inspiration 00:37:40.33\00:37:43.32 devotional material, Bible study, 00:37:43.35\00:37:45.54 family life material. 00:37:45.57\00:37:46.99 For instance in this first edition 00:37:47.02\00:37:49.10 you'll find fascinating information 00:37:49.13\00:37:51.56 about what young adult Adventists believe 00:37:51.59\00:37:54.73 and how they live their Adventism out? 00:37:54.76\00:37:57.03 You'll find a cover story by an author to be named later 00:37:57.06\00:38:02.23 that asks the question am I an Adventist? 00:38:02.26\00:38:05.27 That really asks people 00:38:05.30\00:38:06.50 to search their own hearts with integrity. 00:38:06.53\00:38:08.61 Are you living as an Adventist? 00:38:08.64\00:38:10.96 Are you in fact believing what's Seventh-day Adventists 00:38:10.99\00:38:13.78 have historically believe, those things we now describe as 00:38:13.81\00:38:16.84 the 28 fundamentals of our faith. 00:38:16.87\00:38:19.31 Are you in fact involved in the mission of the church 00:38:19.34\00:38:22.30 or have you by some chance become a by standard 00:38:22.33\00:38:24.74 to the Advent movement. 00:38:24.77\00:38:26.22 We're trying to challenge people 00:38:26.25\00:38:27.74 to faithfully recommit to this movement. 00:38:27.77\00:38:30.28 And we're giving them 00:38:30.31\00:38:31.44 the opportunity in a substantial journal. 00:38:31.47\00:38:34.28 We of the many, many focus groups we conducted. 00:38:34.31\00:38:37.45 We put this size journal out 00:38:37.48\00:38:39.34 and we said what you think of this? 00:38:39.37\00:38:41.62 And they said if it'd look like that 00:38:41.65\00:38:43.89 and it was that size, 00:38:43.92\00:38:45.17 I'd leave it out for my friends, 00:38:45.20\00:38:47.19 which was the response we want to get. 00:38:47.22\00:38:48.40 There's something about this size 00:38:48.43\00:38:49.74 that's very, very inviting. 00:38:49.77\00:38:51.12 Now, I don't know if-- 00:38:51.15\00:38:52.39 if we can get in on this. 00:38:52.42\00:38:54.10 I'm gonna hold this up so that you can kind of see, 00:38:54.13\00:38:56.80 you can push in on 00:38:56.83\00:38:57.86 there's the little a tab colors. 00:38:57.89\00:38:59.24 Can you see those on the edge, 00:38:59.27\00:39:00.65 I don't know if I'm holding it at, I better know I'm not. 00:39:00.68\00:39:05.00 But on the edge they're these little colors, 00:39:05.03\00:39:07.02 four different colors 00:39:07.05\00:39:09.73 that sort of divide this into four different sections. 00:39:09.76\00:39:12.23 And it's really, really 00:39:12.26\00:39:13.63 you can just barely see them one the edge there. 00:39:13.66\00:39:16.42 Here is one, lost it. Here's another one. 00:39:16.45\00:39:19.46 You see a little tab on the edge, 00:39:19.49\00:39:20.66 really, really well done so that-- 00:39:20.69\00:39:22.18 it's already kind of predigested for you. 00:39:22.21\00:39:24.25 You just got to read it 00:39:24.28\00:39:25.31 and if you want to go on you can, 00:39:25.34\00:39:26.41 but if you want to stop 00:39:26.44\00:39:27.47 and divide it up equally, you've got it. 00:39:27.50\00:39:28.62 You've got it done. 00:39:28.65\00:39:29.68 One of the things you have to do with any journal 00:39:29.71\00:39:31.69 especially when you're introducing a new edition 00:39:31.72\00:39:33.52 and show people how to use it. 00:39:33.55\00:39:35.09 So there's a lot of tools in the magazine 00:39:35.12\00:39:37.35 that show you, here's how to use it. 00:39:37.38\00:39:39.41 Here's how to find your way around. 00:39:39.44\00:39:41.20 Here are your favorite sections. 00:39:41.23\00:39:42.57 They're now presented in a little different way 00:39:42.60\00:39:44.84 and most importantly here's the same faithfulness. 00:39:44.87\00:39:48.94 Here's the same commitment to the Adventist message. 00:39:48.97\00:39:51.47 The pictures may look different and you may realize 00:39:51.50\00:39:54.03 that it's aiming at a group of persons 00:39:54.06\00:39:56.39 who may the age of your children 00:39:56.42\00:39:58.65 or your grandchildren 00:39:58.68\00:39:59.98 but I don't know a single viewer of 3ABN 00:40:00.01\00:40:03.80 who isn't praying for their children 00:40:03.83\00:40:05.98 and their grandchildren. 00:40:06.01\00:40:07.04 Very much so. 00:40:07.07\00:40:08.10 I can tell you this is one of those journals 00:40:08.13\00:40:10.14 that will go out and reach that group of people, 00:40:10.17\00:40:12.55 now if they're in the faith it will keep them, 00:40:12.58\00:40:14.93 if they're not in the faith 00:40:14.96\00:40:16.02 it will help to bring them back. 00:40:16.05\00:40:17.26 Let me talk to you this flower, are you yet alive to smell it. 00:40:17.29\00:40:21.31 The Adventist Review has had in my estimation the tact, 00:40:21.34\00:40:27.06 the blessing to be where 00:40:27.09\00:40:29.66 it's a sort of scratch to our edge 00:40:29.69\00:40:31.46 and that is very true 00:40:31.49\00:40:33.21 as you been the editor that your articles, 00:40:33.24\00:40:35.57 this one included is sort of right where it needs to be 00:40:35.60\00:40:38.75 and it's dealing with an issue that is timely 00:40:38.78\00:40:40.93 and that needs to be address and readdress 00:40:40.96\00:40:43.75 in a magazine of this sorts so, 00:40:43.78\00:40:45.61 you know, well done and let me say that. 00:40:45.64\00:40:46.89 You're kind to say so and I will tell you that 00:40:46.92\00:40:49.20 as we plan this first edition and as we plan 00:40:49.23\00:40:51.92 each one of these editions, 00:40:51.95\00:40:53.69 we do a lot of praying together as a team. 00:40:53.72\00:40:55.67 We bring the whole team together and we think together. 00:40:55.70\00:40:58.48 What does the church need right now? 00:40:58.51\00:41:00.23 How do we gather the scattered flock? 00:41:00.26\00:41:02.56 We pool our understanding of what God is doing 00:41:02.59\00:41:05.69 and asks how do we give the assignments to writers. 00:41:05.72\00:41:09.01 Who are the best people to communicate these things? 00:41:09.04\00:41:12.14 There are times when I suppose people think, 00:41:12.17\00:41:15.21 well, they're just sort of reach in 00:41:15.24\00:41:16.37 and pull something out of this drawer 00:41:16.40\00:41:17.94 and out of that drawer. 00:41:17.97\00:41:19.02 I have never in my life been around 00:41:19.05\00:41:21.52 a more intentional project 00:41:21.55\00:41:23.61 in the re-launch of Adventist Review. 00:41:23.64\00:41:26.08 And whether people like it or don't, I can tell you 00:41:26.11\00:41:29.25 it has come with an immense amount of thought and prayer. 00:41:29.28\00:41:32.33 We walk this by General Conference leadership 00:41:32.36\00:41:34.99 and brought them into the process 00:41:35.02\00:41:37.16 to help guide us in this. 00:41:37.19\00:41:38.76 We believe that we've got an opportunity 00:41:38.79\00:41:40.46 God is giving us here now to continue that mission 00:41:40.49\00:41:42.81 that began frankly with Ellen White's vision. 00:41:42.84\00:41:45.23 Exactly. 00:41:45.26\00:41:46.29 1848, about 30 miles from where I grew up 00:41:46.32\00:41:49.29 in Massachusetts. 00:41:49.32\00:41:50.39 Ellen White has this vision of her husband beginning 00:41:50.42\00:41:53.63 a little journal which she said 00:41:53.66\00:41:55.50 would go like extremes of light around the world. 00:41:55.53\00:41:58.49 Well, we're watching those streams of light go 00:41:58.52\00:42:01.32 and we're seeing it do that same mission 166 years later. 00:42:01.35\00:42:05.66 Talk to me for just a moment 00:42:05.69\00:42:06.73 and both of you can sort of weigh in on this. 00:42:06.76\00:42:09.05 Given the proliferation of media, 00:42:09.08\00:42:11.97 I mean you got I this, I that, you could tell it in the radio. 00:42:12.00\00:42:14.72 Is print still part of the answer dare I say, 00:42:14.75\00:42:18.63 you know, to getting the word out 00:42:18.66\00:42:20.51 and bringing the flock to it. 00:42:20.54\00:42:21.79 Because we're okay, we're 18-20 million people 00:42:21.82\00:42:23.57 which is a nice number. 00:42:23.60\00:42:24.89 Do you look at how many people are being born 00:42:24.92\00:42:26.29 every second of everyday, 00:42:26.32\00:42:27.71 we're still a little scattered flock. 00:42:27.74\00:42:29.30 So we still need to come together. 00:42:29.33\00:42:30.52 We still need to know what's happening 00:42:30.55\00:42:31.68 on the other side of the country 00:42:31.71\00:42:32.84 or across the world or across the street 00:42:32.87\00:42:34.59 or in the next city. 00:42:34.62\00:42:36.15 Is printed material still part of the answer? 00:42:36.18\00:42:39.64 Well, absolutely. 00:42:39.67\00:42:40.77 In fact, we're just coming out emerging out of a process 00:42:40.80\00:42:44.89 which in the print industry has been challenging 00:42:44.92\00:42:48.06 because of that proliferation of media as you said, 00:42:48.09\00:42:51.23 but more and more it becomes obvious that print is not dead. 00:42:51.26\00:42:55.55 In fact on February 24th there was a front page article 00:42:55.58\00:43:00.96 in the Washington Post, with the title, 00:43:00.99\00:43:03.38 "Millennial still prefer print." 00:43:03.41\00:43:05.72 Wow. Wow. 00:43:05.75\00:43:07.03 And they had all kinds of studies 00:43:07.06\00:43:08.83 to support this assertion. 00:43:08.86\00:43:12.09 One must recognize is that 00:43:12.12\00:43:14.76 when people want to consume news, 00:43:14.79\00:43:16.94 yes, they like to have it online. 00:43:16.97\00:43:18.66 They like to, you know, be able to read it 00:43:18.69\00:43:20.46 on their mobile, on their tablet. 00:43:20.49\00:43:22.74 But when it comes to absorbing and digesting 00:43:22.77\00:43:27.31 and making their own, a contents that will 00:43:27.34\00:43:31.77 build them up as people. 00:43:31.80\00:43:34.12 They like print better. 00:43:34.15\00:43:36.31 So for instance students when it comes to absorbing 00:43:36.34\00:43:41.18 a piece of literature or a textbook, 00:43:41.21\00:43:44.67 they would rather have print than digital. 00:43:44.70\00:43:48.56 And we know from experience because we have conducted 00:43:48.59\00:43:51.20 this experience in with our readers 00:43:51.23\00:43:53.71 that when it comes to reading spiritual content, 00:43:53.74\00:43:57.21 content that will uplift that will nourish the soul, 00:43:57.24\00:44:01.29 they prefer print. 00:44:01.32\00:44:02.47 Fabulous. Well, I love to hear that. 00:44:02.50\00:44:03.95 Yes. Absolutely. 00:44:03.98\00:44:05.07 It's been striking to us because the assumptions 00:44:05.10\00:44:07.84 that we hear in culture around us is that 00:44:07.87\00:44:10.23 you know, book are going to be dead, 00:44:10.26\00:44:11.88 print media is going to be dead. 00:44:11.91\00:44:13.49 What-- of course these same things were said 00:44:13.52\00:44:15.59 whereas each various 00:44:15.62\00:44:17.56 broadcast medium came into existence. 00:44:17.59\00:44:20.25 When radio first came 00:44:20.28\00:44:21.59 it was going to be the death of newspaper. 00:44:21.62\00:44:22.97 Yes. Yes. 00:44:23.00\00:44:24.03 And when television came, 00:44:24.06\00:44:25.09 it was going to be the death of radio. 00:44:25.12\00:44:26.70 And when the internet came, 00:44:26.73\00:44:27.76 it was going to be death of television. 00:44:27.79\00:44:29.32 In reality the market has simply grown larger 00:44:29.35\00:44:32.07 and more segmented. 00:44:32.10\00:44:33.74 And think about your own life, I think about mine. 00:44:33.77\00:44:36.81 I use all of those media almost every day. 00:44:36.84\00:44:41.61 I do them for difference reasons. 00:44:41.64\00:44:43.80 When I sit down to read spiritual content 00:44:43.83\00:44:46.19 I want print in hand. 00:44:46.22\00:44:47.79 I want something that I can markup 00:44:47.82\00:44:49.25 and reflect that and think about. 00:44:49.28\00:44:50.32 Now that's where I was going that I cannot read a book. 00:44:50.35\00:44:52.44 That's why I don't borrow people's book 00:44:52.47\00:44:53.81 because if I'm reading a book, 00:44:53.84\00:44:55.05 I got to have a pen in hand look like, 00:44:55.08\00:44:56.58 look like Hiroshima when I'm finished with it 00:44:56.61\00:44:58.56 because it's gonna have 00:44:58.59\00:44:59.62 all kinds of step markers on it. 00:44:59.65\00:45:00.68 But when it comes to news as he says, 00:45:00.71\00:45:01.91 I want to read it on my smart phone 00:45:01.94\00:45:03.27 or on my iPad or on my laptop. 00:45:03.30\00:45:05.52 That's the way I want to consume 00:45:05.55\00:45:06.84 that kind of information. 00:45:06.87\00:45:08.35 And again this is really realizing that 00:45:08.38\00:45:12.92 what God has got and going, 00:45:12.95\00:45:14.71 He's going to find a way to deliver that's why 00:45:14.74\00:45:17.65 Adventist Review is literally working 00:45:17.68\00:45:19.72 on all of these platforms. 00:45:19.75\00:45:21.70 We are now one of the largest websites 00:45:21.73\00:45:24.29 that the Seventh-day Adventist church produces. 00:45:24.32\00:45:26.30 You go there for late breaking fast 00:45:26.33\00:45:29.80 Adventist news produced right now 00:45:29.83\00:45:32.77 in a way that 200,000 unique persons a month 00:45:32.80\00:45:36.35 come to that site to get that content. 00:45:36.38\00:45:38.24 It's a huge audience. 00:45:38.27\00:45:39.30 Does Carlos still involved with that? 00:45:39.33\00:45:40.61 Carlos is our online editor. 00:45:40.64\00:45:42.21 And in fact Andrew McChesney, our news editor 00:45:42.24\00:45:44.33 has recently come from the Moscow Times 00:45:44.36\00:45:47.43 to give us a really an upgrade to our news operation as well. 00:45:47.46\00:45:51.57 Between all of these people that God's brought us, 00:45:51.60\00:45:54.46 we're watching the ability to work on 00:45:54.49\00:45:56.60 multiple platforms not just print. 00:45:56.63\00:45:58.66 We are so excited for the Adventist Review. 00:45:58.69\00:46:00.73 I used to cut Carlos Medley's hair in the seminary. 00:46:00.76\00:46:02.56 And you can tell him I said. 00:46:04.53\00:46:05.57 I will be glad to do that. 00:46:05.60\00:46:07.07 Don't have nearly as much as it used to years ago 00:46:07.10\00:46:09.54 but what we did so. 00:46:09.57\00:46:10.60 Before our time gets away, 00:46:10.63\00:46:11.81 I want to put up the address roll, 00:46:11.84\00:46:13.18 contact information for you because 00:46:13.21\00:46:15.01 if there is a magazine that you need to subscribe to 00:46:15.04\00:46:17.85 and he has told us so graciously 00:46:17.88\00:46:19.55 that is half the cost of what it used to be. 00:46:19.58\00:46:22.06 Adventist Review is one that keep you in touch, 00:46:22.09\00:46:23.93 it keeps you in tune. 00:46:23.96\00:46:24.99 It keeps you in league dare I say 00:46:25.02\00:46:27.60 with your fellow brothers and sisters. 00:46:27.63\00:46:29.14 Should you want to make contact with the Adventist Review, 00:46:29.17\00:46:31.51 here is the information that you will need. 00:46:31.54\00:46:34.04 If you'd like to subscribe 00:46:36.12\00:46:37.44 to the Adventist Review Magazine, 00:46:37.47\00:46:39.62 then you can write to the Adventist Review 00:46:39.65\00:46:41.96 12501 Old Columbia Pike, 00:46:41.99\00:46:45.25 Silver Spring, Maryland 20904. 00:46:45.28\00:46:49.15 That's the Adventist Review 12501 Old Columbia Pike, 00:46:49.18\00:46:54.08 Silver Spring, Maryland 20904. 00:46:54.11\00:46:57.70 You can call 301-680-6560, 00:46:57.73\00:47:01.95 that's 301-680-6560. 00:47:01.98\00:47:05.75 You can also visit their website each week 00:47:05.78\00:47:07.89 for select articles 00:47:07.92\00:47:09.11 and more at adventistreview.org. 00:47:09.14\00:47:12.52 That's adventistreview.org. 00:47:12.55\00:47:15.70 It's all one word. Contact them today. 00:47:15.73\00:47:21.52 All right, we are back. 00:47:22.39\00:47:23.69 Two things I want to touch on before we go. 00:47:23.72\00:47:25.77 First, Claude, I think I want to take 00:47:25.80\00:47:26.83 what you were gonna talk about 00:47:26.86\00:47:28.25 as far as the dailies at Adventist Review. 00:47:28.28\00:47:30.43 Then I want to talk to you, Bill, little about, 00:47:30.46\00:47:32.32 a little bit about the difference between 00:47:32.35\00:47:34.44 the Review and the Review 00:47:34.47\00:47:36.39 and Herald Publishing, what that is. 00:47:36.42\00:47:37.75 And then of course the church has gone 00:47:37.78\00:47:38.89 through some adjustments 00:47:38.92\00:47:39.95 as far as publishing houses are concern. 00:47:39.98\00:47:41.68 There's a lot of rumor, a lot myth. 00:47:41.71\00:47:43.55 Walk us through that if you will, 00:47:43.58\00:47:44.62 so, Claude, first you. 00:47:44.65\00:47:45.68 Well, you had asked 00:47:45.71\00:47:47.41 how do I get the daily bulletins? 00:47:47.44\00:47:49.13 And the answer is simple. 00:47:49.16\00:47:50.58 Be a subscriber, get a subscription now 00:47:50.61\00:47:53.71 and you will get the eight daily bulletins 00:47:53.74\00:47:56.18 free of charge as a bonus. 00:47:56.21\00:47:58.22 Excellent. 00:47:58.25\00:47:59.28 If you go to the General Conference 00:47:59.31\00:48:01.19 and I highly suggest you do-- 00:48:01.22\00:48:02.68 you can get them, but if you do not, 00:48:02.71\00:48:04.64 then you really want to have this material in your home 00:48:04.67\00:48:06.60 because that would give you an orderly digest 00:48:06.63\00:48:09.54 of what happens each and every day. 00:48:09.57\00:48:11.26 And something that you can hold on to 00:48:11.29\00:48:12.67 and refer back to, maybe take the information 00:48:12.70\00:48:14.65 what I used to do when I came back, 00:48:14.68\00:48:15.81 I would hold what I call it spiritual business meetings 00:48:15.84\00:48:18.62 on Sabbath afternoon 00:48:18.65\00:48:19.68 and we'd walk through every action 00:48:19.71\00:48:20.95 of the General Conference and my church was informed 00:48:20.98\00:48:22.90 so that's the way you can use that 00:48:22.93\00:48:24.24 and use it very well. 00:48:24.27\00:48:25.30 - Perfect. - Yeah. 00:48:25.33\00:48:26.36 Now walk us through some of this stuff 00:48:26.39\00:48:28.80 that we've been hearing as of late? 00:48:28.83\00:48:30.35 There is no doubt that the last year has been 00:48:30.38\00:48:32.95 one of the most tumultuous 00:48:32.98\00:48:34.61 in Adventist publishing in a long time. 00:48:34.64\00:48:36.99 God has brought us through it but there have been 00:48:37.02\00:48:38.83 a lot changes and lot of challenges in that year. 00:48:38.86\00:48:42.21 Review and Herald Publishing Association 00:48:42.24\00:48:44.45 which became the print partner of this magazine 00:48:44.48\00:48:47.81 only five years after it was founded. 00:48:47.84\00:48:50.40 That Review and Herald Publishing Association 00:48:50.43\00:48:52.97 ceased print operations as of last fall. 00:48:53.00\00:48:56.98 And most of the print business for North America 00:48:57.01\00:49:00.37 moved to the Pacific Press in Nampa, Idaho. 00:49:00.40\00:49:03.66 However the Review and Herald Publishing Association 00:49:03.69\00:49:05.60 continues to exist 00:49:05.63\00:49:07.23 as the General Conference brand, 00:49:07.26\00:49:09.67 as the General Conference publisher 00:49:09.70\00:49:11.89 and will be the publisher of record 00:49:11.92\00:49:14.68 for Adventist Review, Adventist World, 00:49:14.71\00:49:16.85 the Adult Bible study guides etcetera going forward. 00:49:16.88\00:49:19.99 So that the publisher still exist 00:49:20.02\00:49:22.29 but the printing operations have located to Pacific Press. 00:49:22.32\00:49:25.73 As far as the press, the stapling, 00:49:25.76\00:49:27.98 the printing that's gone. 00:49:28.01\00:49:29.52 That's gone. 00:49:29.55\00:49:30.59 Now this has come with a lot of challenge 00:49:30.62\00:49:33.34 to many long term faithful employees 00:49:33.37\00:49:36.74 of the Review and Herald, and the General Conference, 00:49:36.77\00:49:38.51 I have to give them enormous credit 00:49:38.54\00:49:40.99 has worked very carefully and compassionately 00:49:41.02\00:49:43.59 to help individuals either relocate 00:49:43.62\00:49:46.30 in a number of cases to work at Pacific Press 00:49:46.33\00:49:49.30 or other media ministries 00:49:49.33\00:49:50.71 or to find situations that help them 00:49:50.74\00:49:52.94 continue to make a living in the area 00:49:52.97\00:49:54.55 where they were in Maryland. 00:49:54.58\00:49:55.85 This process has been challenging 00:49:55.88\00:49:58.14 but God has led us through it 00:49:58.17\00:49:59.29 and we think there's a brighter future 00:49:59.32\00:50:01.46 for Adventist publishing not only in North America 00:50:01.49\00:50:03.60 but world wide as a result of these carefully plan steps. 00:50:03.63\00:50:07.16 So was an attempt to stream on 00:50:07.19\00:50:08.56 because here are some of the things 00:50:08.59\00:50:09.62 that we're hearing that we're hearing that 00:50:09.65\00:50:11.81 this is proof that print is dying. 00:50:11.84\00:50:15.45 In fact the challenge was that 00:50:15.48\00:50:17.33 probably it would be fair to say, 00:50:17.36\00:50:18.97 we had an oversupply of printing capacity 00:50:19.00\00:50:22.63 and an undersupply of content coming forward. 00:50:22.66\00:50:26.29 And frankly a distribution system 00:50:26.32\00:50:28.50 which needed to be reworked 00:50:28.53\00:50:30.87 today many, many individuals buy online. 00:50:30.90\00:50:34.10 They buy from Amazon, the buy from Barnes and Nobles. 00:50:34.13\00:50:37.22 And the outlet system by which many persons 00:50:37.25\00:50:40.51 used to purchase is no longer functioning in the same way. 00:50:40.54\00:50:43.98 The church at every point 00:50:44.01\00:50:45.34 has to find a way to do its mission 00:50:45.37\00:50:47.70 with the technology of the moment. 00:50:47.73\00:50:49.77 Technology is neither sacred nor profane. 00:50:49.80\00:50:52.88 It is in fact just the means to accomplish a mission. 00:50:52.91\00:50:55.78 And God is helping us find the right technology 00:50:55.81\00:50:58.83 and the right means of distribution 00:50:58.86\00:51:00.48 to keep the mission going forward. 00:51:00.51\00:51:02.34 Chances are, C.A., 00:51:02.37\00:51:03.45 in your years of doing evangelism, 00:51:03.48\00:51:05.01 you didn't do it this exactly the same 00:51:05.04\00:51:07.34 when you started as to your last series. 00:51:07.37\00:51:10.02 The tent look different or the building look different 00:51:10.05\00:51:12.24 or the handbills look different. 00:51:12.27\00:51:13.83 And that was exactly the right approach 00:51:13.86\00:51:16.28 because you were adapting the technology, 00:51:16.31\00:51:19.26 the means for to keep the mission alive. 00:51:19.29\00:51:22.37 It's similar thing with printing 00:51:22.40\00:51:23.78 in the church today. 00:51:23.81\00:51:25.09 There is in fact a good future for Adventist print 00:51:25.12\00:51:28.61 and for Adventist publishing. 00:51:28.64\00:51:30.31 If we do it smart, 00:51:30.34\00:51:32.19 if we think carefully about it, 00:51:32.22\00:51:33.82 if we consolidate the capacity and the means 00:51:33.85\00:51:37.17 and I get a chance because I'm involve 00:51:37.20\00:51:39.38 with those boards to help make those decisions 00:51:39.41\00:51:42.68 and help build a solid future for the church and publishing. 00:51:42.71\00:51:45.41 Yeah, well said, from the days when Joshua Himes took 00:51:45.44\00:51:47.62 William Miller out of the small towns 00:51:47.65\00:51:49.62 and used the extent media at that time. 00:51:49.65\00:51:52.02 You always try to do this, 00:51:52.05\00:51:53.13 so this is really just in that trajectory. 00:51:53.16\00:51:54.85 Exactly. 00:51:54.88\00:51:55.93 Yeah. Yeah. Excellent. Excellent. 00:51:55.96\00:51:58.27 We're gonna go to our news break now, 00:51:58.30\00:51:59.76 then we're gonna come back and sort of put a little bow 00:51:59.79\00:52:01.34 on this and wrap this up. 00:52:01.37\00:52:02.40 This has been a good time together. 00:52:02.43\00:52:03.64 We'll be back in just three minutes. 00:52:03.67\00:52:05.48
