He is the principal. 00:03:56.64\00:03:58.38 Principal and we kind of got that thing locked out. 00:03:58.41\00:04:00.27 That's right. 00:04:00.30\00:04:02.60 As administrator what is your portfolio? 00:04:02.63\00:04:04.49 What do you call to do? 00:04:04.52\00:04:06.49 You know, really just keep things going, 00:04:06.52\00:04:09.85 be there for the staff, help them with the resources 00:04:09.88\00:04:12.68 they need to do what our mission and vision is, 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.54 and it's a blessing to work with young people everyday. 00:04:15.57\00:04:18.59 Yeah. Yeah. 00:04:18.62\00:04:19.74 It either keeps you young 00:04:19.77\00:04:20.80 or makes you feel old or maybe both. 00:04:20.83\00:04:22.35 Or both, yeah, could be both. 00:04:22.38\00:04:24.83 Depending on the day. Yeah. 00:04:24.86\00:04:25.99 Tell us a little bit about where Heritage is and its size, 00:04:26.02\00:04:29.59 how many students you have? 00:04:29.62\00:04:30.83 We have about 55 students right now 00:04:30.86\00:04:33.72 and we can take about 60. 00:04:33.75\00:04:35.58 We are about an hour and half east of Nashville 00:04:35.61\00:04:38.21 and west of Knottsville. 00:04:38.24\00:04:39.44 So right in the middle. So Upper Cumberland. 00:04:39.47\00:04:41.56 So you are close to max as far as your students-- 00:04:41.59\00:04:44.35 We are, that's right. Yeah. Yeah. 00:04:44.38\00:04:46.22 Now there are some schools that are a lot bigger, 00:04:46.25\00:04:48.46 some obviously a lot smaller that 55 seats kind of good, 00:04:48.49\00:04:52.41 I guess that allows for a pretty good teacher 00:04:52.44\00:04:54.69 student ratio and some real close working together. 00:04:54.72\00:04:57.51 It does. 00:04:57.54\00:04:58.57 It enables us to really have the relationship 00:04:58.60\00:05:00.83 and build that relationship with the kids 00:05:00.86\00:05:02.75 that we feel that we need to have and or called to do. 00:05:02.78\00:05:05.88 All right, now hearing that coming 00:05:05.91\00:05:08.34 from a staff member is one thing, 00:05:08.37\00:05:10.41 I want to turn to the young people. 00:05:10.44\00:05:12.51 Brian, you could have gone to any number of schools 00:05:12.54\00:05:14.18 there are Georgia-Cumberland is fairly close 00:05:14.21\00:05:16.06 to where you are than other schools, why Heritage? 00:05:16.09\00:05:18.35 Why Heritage? 00:05:18.38\00:05:19.45 I was really impressed with the spiritual aspects 00:05:19.48\00:05:21.38 and all that to the school 00:05:21.41\00:05:22.71 and they also have number of different opportunities, 00:05:22.74\00:05:26.09 we will be talking today disaster response. 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.88 Hailey, same question. 00:05:28.91\00:05:31.31 It was more of my parents decisions 00:05:31.34\00:05:33.31 and since I was really young, I was eight 00:05:33.34\00:05:36.47 and so it was kind of like, you know, 00:05:36.50\00:05:37.95 you follow your parents but overall I think 00:05:37.98\00:05:41.51 it was a great opportunity for my family to come 00:05:41.54\00:05:43.81 and I'm really happy that they came. 00:05:43.84\00:05:46.18 Brian, for what you know about the schools, 00:05:46.21\00:05:49.15 what sets Heritage apart in your mind? 00:05:49.18\00:05:51.46 What sets Heritage apart? 00:05:51.49\00:05:53.19 They have a strong emphasis for relationship with Christ 00:05:53.22\00:05:55.47 and building a relationship with the students 00:05:55.50\00:05:57.22 and getting them to know Christ. 00:05:57.25\00:05:58.70 We also do a lot of outreach 00:05:58.73\00:05:59.88 in ministries community around us 00:05:59.91\00:06:01.64 are through our disaster response through canvassing 00:06:01.67\00:06:03.92 and evangelism and different forms. 00:06:03.95\00:06:07.28 That seems to be and listening 00:06:07.31\00:06:08.62 to both of the young people Debbie, 00:06:08.65\00:06:10.19 to be very important part of the texture of the schools 00:06:10.22\00:06:14.10 that's something that you constantly strive to do 00:06:14.13\00:06:16.22 to really make it a spiritual place and a place of service. 00:06:16.25\00:06:19.37 It is and you now, the Lord really did that. 00:06:19.40\00:06:22.75 There were ministries that we begin ourselves 00:06:22.78\00:06:24.84 but once that the Lord open doors for specifically 00:06:24.87\00:06:27.76 disaster response was start over Katrina. 00:06:27.79\00:06:30.65 We participated with a lot of kids, a lot of academies 00:06:30.68\00:06:33.48 and really felt like we wanted to be a part of that 00:06:33.51\00:06:37.48 and continue that and that's where our training begin. 00:06:37.51\00:06:40.12 Safety comes first. 00:06:40.15\00:06:41.47 We wanted to make sure that we put our kids 00:06:41.50\00:06:43.79 in a safe environment and begin training 00:06:43.82\00:06:46.32 at that point 2005 and you know, 00:06:46.35\00:06:49.25 to be the hands and feet of Jesus 00:06:49.28\00:06:50.54 and giving kids the opportunity to do that 00:06:50.57\00:06:52.74 for them to be face to face and say, you know, 00:06:52.77\00:06:55.19 I could make a difference as an administrator, 00:06:55.22\00:06:57.54 as an educator, there is nothing better. 00:06:57.57\00:06:59.15 Yeah. Yeah. 00:06:59.18\00:07:00.22 Now I feel have always thought that when kids serve they grow, 00:07:00.25\00:07:04.30 that there is a direct correlation 00:07:04.33\00:07:05.62 between service and growth. 00:07:05.65\00:07:07.34 We had a-- I was chairman of the board 00:07:07.37\00:07:08.82 of a city academy Northeastern Academy 00:07:08.85\00:07:11.19 but when we took young people on mission trips 00:07:11.22\00:07:13.64 we saw growth, we saw expansion 00:07:13.67\00:07:16.28 in their relationship with Christ 00:07:16.31\00:07:17.70 and they did come back different. 00:07:17.73\00:07:18.77 Right. 00:07:18.80\00:07:19.83 And even those who are kind of marginalized 00:07:19.86\00:07:21.09 and maybe act out a little bit 00:07:21.12\00:07:22.21 once they were out of the, you know, 00:07:22.24\00:07:26.82 the texture of the culture of their regular life 00:07:26.85\00:07:29.35 took off the headphones and really began 00:07:29.38\00:07:31.25 to listen and serve, it changed their lives. 00:07:31.28\00:07:33.33 Have you seen that in the young people 00:07:33.36\00:07:34.66 that you are called to work with? 00:07:34.69\00:07:35.72 Absolutely and you don't have to go overseas to do that. 00:07:35.75\00:07:37.52 Correct. 00:07:37.55\00:07:38.58 Disaster response really fills that bill in many ways 00:07:38.61\00:07:41.60 and it bonds them together as students and students 00:07:41.63\00:07:46.45 and staff and away that nothing else does. 00:07:46.48\00:07:48.79 Yeah. And it's powerful. 00:07:48.82\00:07:50.56 It's powerful to watch God work in the young person's life 00:07:50.59\00:07:53.14 that way and that's the way He lived. 00:07:53.17\00:07:55.18 Amen. And so... 00:07:55.21\00:07:56.30 Yeah, now you've been there how many years? 00:07:56.33\00:07:57.90 Seventeen. Okay, little while. 00:07:57.93\00:08:00.03 I guess long enough to see some people graduate 00:08:00.06\00:08:01.94 and maybe come back and see the long term 00:08:01.97\00:08:03.88 how their lives are affected. 00:08:03.91\00:08:05.09 Yes. Yeah. 00:08:05.12\00:08:06.58 Must be very rewarding. 00:08:06.61\00:08:08.58 It is. It is really the icing on the cake. 00:08:08.61\00:08:11.26 Absolutely a blessing. 00:08:11.29\00:08:13.27 Being in ministry is phenomenal, so... 00:08:13.30\00:08:16.08 I think working with young people is a calling. 00:08:16.11\00:08:18.66 It really is. 00:08:18.69\00:08:21.11 Give me some of the flavor now 00:08:21.14\00:08:22.40 because Heritage works very closely 00:08:22.43\00:08:25.11 with David Canther and ACTS. 00:08:25.14\00:08:26.84 How did that partnership become-- 00:08:26.87\00:08:29.88 you know, how did it come to be? 00:08:29.91\00:08:31.37 Well, really started with helping 00:08:31.40\00:08:33.94 in Katrina really was our first experience. 00:08:33.97\00:08:36.85 I grew up in Florida so hurricanes are typical 00:08:36.88\00:08:39.56 and but to really involved kids 00:08:39.59\00:08:42.51 in disaster response was amazing. 00:08:42.54\00:08:44.83 And we said we want to do this more. 00:08:44.86\00:08:46.89 We want to get involved more but we want them to be safe. 00:08:46.92\00:08:49.79 So that began their training component 00:08:49.82\00:08:52.08 and we got together with our local EMS, 00:08:52.11\00:08:55.86 local emergency folks and started that training. 00:08:55.89\00:08:58.90 And since then it just expounded as you can see 00:08:58.93\00:09:02.34 a lot of these props that we use here for chocking 00:09:02.37\00:09:07.20 and CPR and flood water rescue. 00:09:07.23\00:09:10.55 Those things we train the kids every year. 00:09:10.58\00:09:13.44 All of our students 00:09:13.47\00:09:14.50 and all of our staff are trained as first responders 00:09:14.53\00:09:17.68 and we want to make sure 00:09:17.71\00:09:19.39 when they are out in the field that safety comes first. 00:09:19.42\00:09:23.26 That they are there to help, they are there to be strong 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.30 and do the best that they can 00:09:25.33\00:09:27.37 and have the skills to be able to be the best they can. 00:09:27.40\00:09:31.45 Yeah. Now, I think that makes Heritage. 00:09:31.48\00:09:33.00 Maybe somewhat unusual among academies. 00:09:33.03\00:09:35.41 There are academies that do music, 00:09:35.44\00:09:37.07 there are academies that do other things 00:09:37.10\00:09:38.49 but disaster training per se I don't know 00:09:38.52\00:09:40.70 if that's something that exist in many schools 00:09:40.73\00:09:43.98 but obviously it is a hallmark of what Heritage does. 00:09:44.01\00:09:46.68 It is. Yeah. Yeah. 00:09:46.71\00:09:48.37 When you chose to come there Brian, 00:09:48.40\00:09:50.89 did you know about this aspect of the curriculum or not? 00:09:50.92\00:09:54.70 Yes, I did and it was actually 00:09:54.73\00:09:58.46 an awesome part of choosing this school. 00:09:58.49\00:10:04.24 You had a chance to actually put some legs on your training, 00:10:04.27\00:10:10.72 to put into practice that which you, 00:10:10.75\00:10:12.71 which you talked about 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.59 because I have a chainsaw training license now. 00:10:14.62\00:10:19.25 I got that since moving here, I'm New York City guy, 00:10:19.28\00:10:21.26 I didn't know what chainsaw was, 00:10:21.29\00:10:22.52 and never held a chainsaw 00:10:22.55\00:10:23.67 till I came out to Southern Illinois. 00:10:23.70\00:10:26.39 And there is a lot of dos and a lot of don't, 00:10:26.42\00:10:27.88 there is a lot of ways to get hurt 00:10:27.91\00:10:30.14 when you are out trying to serve 00:10:30.17\00:10:32.11 or trying to heal or trying to help in a community. 00:10:32.14\00:10:34.37 Talk to me a little bit before you go into actually 00:10:34.40\00:10:36.15 what happened about the kinds of training 00:10:36.18\00:10:38.18 that young people receive. 00:10:38.21\00:10:39.90 Well, you know, we follow strict guidelines. 00:10:39.93\00:10:42.41 None of our students handle a chainsaw. 00:10:42.44\00:10:45.88 Really it's our staff 00:10:45.91\00:10:46.99 but the students are right there 00:10:47.02\00:10:48.25 to be able to pull the brush and clear things, 00:10:48.28\00:10:50.63 drive tractors, you know, to be able to clear roads 00:10:50.66\00:10:54.10 and a combination of things. 00:10:54.13\00:10:55.24 So we want to make sure that they are safe 00:10:55.27\00:10:57.55 and that they are trained 00:10:57.58\00:10:58.61 and they know how to do work mass, 00:10:58.64\00:11:01.84 kitchen's mass feeding so that they know 00:11:01.87\00:11:04.49 how to keep food safe 00:11:04.52\00:11:05.60 and just the whole combination of training. 00:11:05.63\00:11:08.86 They are so trained which is a FEMA designation 00:11:08.89\00:11:11.90 and recognized throughout the country, 00:11:11.93\00:11:14.87 really throughout the world. 00:11:14.90\00:11:15.96 Now this term you've used it twice, 00:11:15.99\00:11:18.26 first responders, so that means you can be 00:11:18.29\00:11:20.13 the first to go in after a disaster 00:11:20.16\00:11:22.82 or what is that term actually mean? 00:11:22.85\00:11:24.95 Up until just a month ago we have deployed 39 times 00:11:24.98\00:11:29.58 some as quickly as six hours after an incident has occurred. 00:11:29.61\00:11:33.41 And it's just a matter of being right on the scene 00:11:33.44\00:11:35.84 being able to do such a rescue, 00:11:35.87\00:11:38.41 to be able to assess a situation, 00:11:38.44\00:11:40.60 plug into the local emergency management personal 00:11:40.63\00:11:44.04 and be of service. 00:11:44.07\00:11:45.70 Yeah. 00:11:45.73\00:11:46.76 So if something happens and you are the first ones there. 00:11:46.79\00:11:48.90 You are equipped to handle 00:11:48.93\00:11:50.77 for the most part, those kinds of things 00:11:50.80\00:11:51.93 that you have to deal with, you know what to do. 00:11:51.96\00:11:52.99 That's correct. Yes, right. 00:11:53.02\00:11:54.49 Yeah. 00:11:54.52\00:11:55.57 Now as we said before you actually 00:11:55.60\00:11:57.16 had an opportunity to put some of the stuff into practice. 00:11:57.19\00:12:00.21 Talk to me about the event 00:12:00.24\00:12:01.90 and then how the school began to work its way through that. 00:12:01.93\00:12:04.52 Well, if you live in Tennessee at all you know that, 00:12:04.55\00:12:07.93 you know, just wait a minute and the weather will change. 00:12:07.96\00:12:11.45 We live upon a plateau and we get snow 00:12:11.48\00:12:14.62 but not ice very often. 00:12:14.65\00:12:16.83 I've been there 17 years 00:12:16.86\00:12:18.07 and only really any significant ice once. 00:12:18.10\00:12:21.56 We were told that weather was coming through 00:12:21.59\00:12:23.76 and there might be ice accumulation 00:12:23.79\00:12:25.80 but not to worry, it wasn't gonna be too bad. 00:12:25.83\00:12:28.25 And a month ago we woke up 4 am on a Sabbath morning 00:12:28.28\00:12:33.87 to incredible sounds of trees breaking 00:12:33.90\00:12:38.29 and falling and a scary sound. 00:12:38.32\00:12:40.80 So you could hear the cracking? 00:12:40.83\00:12:42.25 Yes. 00:12:42.28\00:12:43.52 About every ten seconds 00:12:43.55\00:12:45.19 a branch was falling around campus. 00:12:45.22\00:12:47.34 We have thousands of trees down on campus right now 00:12:47.37\00:12:50.35 and in the surrounding area of Monterey 00:12:50.38\00:12:52.49 where we live is, was kind of ground zero 00:12:52.52\00:12:55.96 for the ice storm an inch of ice on everything. 00:12:55.99\00:12:58.85 Wow. 00:12:58.88\00:12:59.94 So it was-- You know, 00:12:59.97\00:13:01.93 we were used to picking up and going 00:13:01.96\00:13:03.89 where the disaster is, we went out in the disaster. 00:13:03.92\00:13:06.52 You're disaster-- You were the disaster indeed. 00:13:06.55\00:13:09.11 We were-- 00:13:09.14\00:13:10.17 Yeah, did you lose power? 00:13:10.20\00:13:11.40 We did for eight days. 00:13:11.43\00:13:12.77 Oh, my soul. Yes. 00:13:12.80\00:13:14.06 Yeah. Yeah. 00:13:14.09\00:13:15.25 Lot of can beans and stuff I guess were out. 00:13:15.28\00:13:17.18 Well, we are fortunate that we have propane 00:13:17.21\00:13:20.04 and natural gas on campus 00:13:20.07\00:13:21.58 so there were some hot meals but, 00:13:21.61\00:13:24.04 but its true, you know, 00:13:24.07\00:13:25.11 we are really taught as first responders 00:13:25.14\00:13:27.22 that you don't tell folks you are gonna be okay, 00:13:27.25\00:13:29.66 or we understand what you are going through. 00:13:29.69\00:13:31.91 But through the response 00:13:31.94\00:13:33.14 we were able to really help them 00:13:33.17\00:13:36.19 to say we are in it together. 00:13:36.22\00:13:37.87 They don't have power, we don't have power. 00:13:37.90\00:13:39.67 We understand what they are going through 00:13:39.70\00:13:41.48 because we are in it together and that really bound us 00:13:41.51\00:13:43.92 together with our community like 00:13:43.95\00:13:46.00 response is never done so... 00:13:46.03\00:13:48.53 I would imagine that I mean, your first-- 00:13:48.56\00:13:51.55 what hits your mind first, is okay, 00:13:51.58\00:13:53.29 we need to take care of ourselves. 00:13:53.32\00:13:54.56 Correct. 00:13:54.59\00:13:55.63 But also in that mix you are Christian. 00:13:55.66\00:13:59.14 You got a community surrounding the school 00:13:59.17\00:14:00.95 that is in the same predicament that you are in. 00:14:00.98\00:14:03.78 So you want to reach out and help. 00:14:03.81\00:14:04.85 How do you work your way through? 00:14:04.88\00:14:05.94 How do you treat as-- do we stay 00:14:05.97\00:14:08.40 if you are on a mountain and do our stuff or do 00:14:08.43\00:14:09.86 you go on to the town, how is that decision made? 00:14:09.89\00:14:12.87 Well, that Sabbath we really took stock 00:14:12.90\00:14:15.10 of where we were and how were we doing. 00:14:15.13\00:14:16.77 Yeah. 00:14:16.80\00:14:17.85 You know, really as administrator staff said 00:14:17.88\00:14:20.40 how we are gonna make sure that the kids are warm, 00:14:20.43\00:14:22.67 that were fed, that things are okay on campus 00:14:22.70\00:14:26.04 and took stock of that first. 00:14:26.07\00:14:29.46 Once we had a plan 00:14:29.49\00:14:30.57 and were able to work that plan, 00:14:30.60\00:14:32.34 we than started driving, we left campus 00:14:32.37\00:14:35.81 and mind you still an inch of ice on the roads, 00:14:35.84\00:14:38.98 still slippery, lots of snow. 00:14:39.01\00:14:41.45 Went out to see, you know, 00:14:41.48\00:14:42.90 what things look like beyond our campus. 00:14:42.93\00:14:45.04 And the roads between Monterey-- 00:14:45.07\00:14:48.26 between to Heritage and Monterey 00:14:48.29\00:14:49.91 were completely blocked and we said, 00:14:49.94\00:14:52.59 you know, we need to be able to get out 00:14:52.62\00:14:54.76 and get to town and figure out what we need to do. 00:14:54.79\00:14:56.67 So Sunday morning we started early with a cut crew 00:14:56.70\00:15:01.33 and our tractor and Brian was one of those I mean, 00:15:01.36\00:15:06.26 absolutely first responders out there 00:15:06.29\00:15:08.98 doing everything they could to clear the road. 00:15:09.01\00:15:10.22 So we're looking at this. 00:15:10.25\00:15:11.28 Now, you got trees down so the roads 00:15:11.31\00:15:12.70 were physically blocked with debris, tress, 00:15:12.73\00:15:14.80 brush that kind of thing. 00:15:14.83\00:15:15.90 Power lines, the transformers, that's right, 00:15:15.93\00:15:19.05 power poles snapped in half just amazing 00:15:19.08\00:15:21.82 and they cut six miles worth of road 00:15:21.85\00:15:26.00 in a little less than six hours. 00:15:26.03\00:15:27.41 Wow, that's amazing. 00:15:27.44\00:15:28.47 They met just on the, on the other side 00:15:28.50\00:15:30.47 that mile marker 3 coming into Monterey, 00:15:30.50\00:15:32.62 the cut crew for the power company 00:15:32.65\00:15:34.86 and so they just I mean, it was awesome. 00:15:34.89\00:15:39.03 Brian, tell me a little bit about 00:15:39.06\00:15:40.15 what's going through your mind when you heard 00:15:40.18\00:15:41.70 and you realized what was going on 00:15:41.73\00:15:43.09 and you guys had to get out, get on your coats 00:15:43.12\00:15:45.82 and get out there and work? 00:15:45.85\00:15:47.60 What was going through your mind at that point in time? 00:15:47.63\00:15:50.04 Well, it was already cool outside 00:15:50.07\00:15:52.09 so we are pretty used to wearing coats. 00:15:52.12\00:15:54.86 So the weather necessarily wasn't a big deal 00:15:54.89\00:15:57.48 but we knew that something had happened, 00:15:57.51\00:15:58.93 we didn't have any power and we only been on campus, 00:15:58.96\00:16:02.50 we're boarding academy 00:16:02.53\00:16:03.64 so we see what happens on the campus 00:16:03.67\00:16:05.22 and the trees falling sound like car crashes. 00:16:05.25\00:16:07.34 Yeah. 00:16:07.37\00:16:08.44 And so it was pretty intense well, 00:16:08.47\00:16:10.41 we get out there and as you saw 00:16:10.44\00:16:13.55 the highway is completely blocked, 00:16:13.58\00:16:15.69 well, there were chainsaws removing debris 00:16:15.72\00:16:17.58 and she said six miles in six hours 00:16:17.61\00:16:20.12 is what we did and it was really cool 00:16:20.15\00:16:22.37 because obviously some crazy people out 00:16:22.40\00:16:24.92 they are tying to drive 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.02 and we would have to direct them, 00:16:26.05\00:16:27.30 flag them through and get them through our work site, 00:16:27.33\00:16:30.76 remaining with that, but it was really 00:16:30.79\00:16:32.32 an awesome opportunity to be able to work 00:16:32.35\00:16:36.39 and be able to-- I mean, right hand in hand 00:16:36.42\00:16:38.08 with the power company force removal, you know. 00:16:38.11\00:16:41.35 So it was really awesome experience for me. 00:16:41.38\00:16:43.77 Six miles in six hours, 00:16:43.80\00:16:45.08 that's picking up and laying it down pretty good. 00:16:45.11\00:16:47.32 Because you are cutting brush, moving brush, 00:16:47.35\00:16:49.04 pushing to the side trying to clear, 00:16:49.07\00:16:50.38 trying to clear road. 00:16:50.41\00:16:51.46 How many young people were involved 00:16:51.49\00:16:52.86 in this particular part of the ACTS? 00:16:52.89\00:16:54.52 This particular part, I think we had three chainsaw crews, 00:16:54.55\00:16:58.30 which means a chainsaw or two with anywhere 00:16:58.33\00:17:02.20 between seven and ten people. 00:17:02.23\00:17:05.71 So maybe 30? Yeah. 00:17:05.74\00:17:07.22 Yeah. Wow. 00:17:07.25\00:17:08.75 Incredible. 00:17:08.78\00:17:10.07 Was that the first time you had a chance to for-- 00:17:10.10\00:17:12.66 you personally a chance to put into practice 00:17:12.69\00:17:14.93 the things that you had learned 00:17:14.96\00:17:16.13 or had you been on other deployments before? 00:17:16.16\00:17:18.87 Well, this is my first year at Heritage Academy, 00:17:18.90\00:17:20.63 I'm a junior and so I haven't been on any disasters. 00:17:20.66\00:17:24.26 I've been in training modules and things like that 00:17:24.29\00:17:26.30 but this is actually, 00:17:26.33\00:17:27.36 this is the first disaster I've been, 00:17:27.39\00:17:28.42 it was right in my backyard. 00:17:28.45\00:17:29.48 Yeah. I'm glad you put it in there. 00:20:17.89\00:20:20.02 I have a sentence that I used in my ministry 00:20:20.05\00:20:22.32 that "Deeds of kindness breakdown walls of separation, 00:20:22.35\00:20:24.85 build bridges to salvation." 00:20:24.88\00:20:27.19 So I guess this-- if you had not been bond 00:20:27.22\00:20:30.37 with the community Debbie, certainly drew the school 00:20:30.40\00:20:33.32 because you are not located right in town, are you? 00:20:33.35\00:20:34.70 That's right. Yeah. 00:20:37.24\00:20:38.28 And even though I've been there 17 years, 00:20:38.31\00:20:40.68 I really didn't have my finger 00:20:40.71\00:20:42.29 on the pulse of the folks that lived there. 00:20:42.32\00:20:45.16 Didn't realize that 40 percent of the population 00:20:45.19\00:20:48.56 on that little town are impoverished. 00:20:48.59\00:20:51.65 And we really-- as Brian just mentioned 00:20:51.68\00:20:55.57 after this response have gone out 00:20:55.60\00:20:58.00 to the community to take needs assessments, 00:20:58.03\00:21:00.16 to have prayer with folks door to door 00:21:00.19\00:21:02.64 because we want this to continue. 00:21:02.67\00:21:04.08 We don't want it just to be because of this disaster 00:21:04.11\00:21:06.35 but it really has opened the door for us 00:21:06.38\00:21:08.50 to know what the needs are and hopefully, 00:21:08.53\00:21:11.21 prayerfully that the Lord will open doors for us 00:21:11.24\00:21:13.28 to be able to continue to minister to this. 00:21:13.31\00:21:15.32 Yeah. Yeah. 00:21:15.35\00:21:16.49 And I will suspect now if the school 00:21:16.52\00:21:18.40 ever has any event a singing thing 00:21:18.43\00:21:20.96 or concert something and you invite the community in. 00:21:20.99\00:21:22.78 They are much more dispose now 00:21:22.81\00:21:24.31 to come on upon hills to see what's going on 00:21:24.34\00:21:26.50 because you learned to handle them. 00:21:26.53\00:21:28.09 And you know, a boarding academy 00:21:28.12\00:21:29.96 is odd to most folks, you know, and they-- 00:21:29.99\00:21:32.79 you know, they have lots of questions. 00:21:32.82\00:21:34.60 You know, what you guys going? 00:21:34.63\00:21:35.90 You know, what do you do out there that kind of thing. 00:21:35.93\00:21:37.93 This really has opened the door for them to see kids, 00:21:37.96\00:21:40.61 teenagers in a very different light 00:21:40.64\00:21:43.16 and so many of them are just amazed 00:21:43.19\00:21:45.68 and we are as staff so pleased to give kids 00:21:45.71\00:21:50.18 the opportunity to do this. 00:21:50.21\00:21:51.45 That's great. That is great. 00:21:51.48\00:21:52.94 Did you have a chance to do any brand, 00:21:52.97\00:21:56.05 any wood removable, any cleaning, 00:21:56.08\00:21:58.91 any tree removable for the people in the community 00:21:58.94\00:22:01.21 as along with the road work that you did? 00:22:01.24\00:22:03.02 Yes. 00:22:03.05\00:22:04.08 We went-- actually went, 00:22:04.11\00:22:05.67 we got even the list by IC and so I commanded there 00:22:05.70\00:22:09.11 and they are like hey, 00:22:09.14\00:22:10.17 this person is helping with the response, 00:22:10.20\00:22:11.83 they can clean their own yard 00:22:11.86\00:22:13.02 or this person is in really, really need. 00:22:13.05\00:22:14.66 You've got trees blocking this we can't move it. 00:22:14.69\00:22:16.76 And as we go there we would remove the debris 00:22:16.79\00:22:19.72 and help them so they could get out, 00:22:19.75\00:22:21.61 move logs in the yard and different trees like that. 00:22:21.64\00:22:25.21 Debbie, talk to me a little bit about because you-- 00:22:25.24\00:22:27.40 you're in there doing your thing, 00:22:27.43\00:22:29.63 your cleaning but there is also government agencies 00:22:29.66\00:22:32.16 FEMA whatever else working. 00:22:32.19\00:22:34.49 How about the corporation 00:22:34.52\00:22:35.90 or lack there of with official government agencies? 00:22:35.93\00:22:38.46 Are they welcoming your work with them? 00:22:38.49\00:22:41.23 Are they suspicious of what you are doing? 00:22:41.26\00:22:43.56 How does that flow? 00:22:43.59\00:22:45.05 I'm really glad you asked because being so trained 00:22:45.08\00:22:48.22 we understand that we don't just wing it on our own. 00:22:48.25\00:22:50.02 Yeah. 00:22:50.05\00:22:51.08 We don't walk into community and just say ta-da 00:22:51.11\00:22:53.30 we are here and get busy. 00:22:53.33\00:22:56.65 We plug in with the folks that are there that's their job 00:22:56.68\00:22:59.74 and we seek them out. 00:22:59.77\00:23:01.70 We go to where they are and ask them 00:23:01.73\00:23:04.07 what can we can do to help. 00:23:04.10\00:23:05.97 And so that first day we knew that there was access 00:23:06.00\00:23:10.90 through rescue work through ACTS 00:23:10.93\00:23:13.66 that there might be a mobile kitchen 00:23:13.69\00:23:15.14 that we could mobilize to get there 00:23:15.17\00:23:17.60 and so we told them we've got this resource where they, 00:23:17.63\00:23:23.18 that I think that they could use it 00:23:23.21\00:23:24.75 and they said absolutely. 00:23:24.78\00:23:25.96 So just the day after we lost power, 00:23:25.99\00:23:30.04 headed to Chattanooga to pick up that mobile kitchen, 00:23:30.07\00:23:32.41 so that we could feed 00:23:32.44\00:23:33.47 that folks that were in the shelter, 00:23:33.50\00:23:34.62 they were completed displaced, 00:23:34.65\00:23:36.18 and other folks including emergency workers 00:23:36.21\00:23:38.50 and they were bringing in electricians 00:23:38.53\00:23:42.13 and power trucks from all over the country 00:23:42.16\00:23:44.96 to help restore power in that region. 00:23:44.99\00:23:47.17 So there were about 15 counties 00:23:47.20\00:23:50.45 that were affected not just our own. 00:23:50.48\00:23:52.61 So a lot of folks 50,000, 60,000 people 00:23:52.64\00:23:55.45 without power in that area. 00:23:55.48\00:23:57.49 So I visit and attend meetings 00:23:57.52\00:24:02.27 with our local emergency management 00:24:02.30\00:24:04.08 because of our experience 00:24:04.11\00:24:05.80 and I've had several of them say, you know, 00:24:05.83\00:24:07.63 you tell us, you bring pictures, 00:24:07.66\00:24:09.94 we know what you do because of things 00:24:09.97\00:24:11.88 that you said but it's not the same as when we see it, 00:24:11.91\00:24:14.97 when we live it and they have just been 00:24:15.00\00:24:17.83 so gracious and just been so open to working with us 00:24:17.86\00:24:22.70 and we just were partners. 00:24:22.73\00:24:24.88 We saw ourselves side by side working together with them 00:24:24.91\00:24:27.85 and forging new fresh relationships in exciting ways. 00:24:27.88\00:24:33.13 And they are open to a lot of things, 00:24:33.16\00:24:36.05 so we are really excited. 00:24:36.08\00:24:37.41 You are building bridges that can be crossed later on. 00:24:37.44\00:24:40.02 I didn't ask you this question 00:24:40.05\00:24:41.20 because all this is new to me, I think it's very exciting. 00:24:41.23\00:24:43.82 Is there a code word or if you say, 00:24:43.85\00:24:47.75 we have this training then somebody 00:24:47.78\00:24:50.07 in responsible position says, 00:24:50.10\00:24:51.44 okay, I know they have this. 00:24:51.47\00:24:52.88 Is there some sort of word 00:24:52.91\00:24:54.23 or some sort of something that kind of clicks it 00:24:54.26\00:24:56.92 so that they know, yeah, they know 00:24:56.95\00:24:58.01 what they are doing, they're not just rookies. 00:24:58.04\00:24:59.39 Kind of a secret handshake? Yeah. 00:24:59.42\00:25:00.63 Yeah. 00:25:00.66\00:25:02.99 CERT that stands for Community Emergency Response Teams, CERT 00:25:03.02\00:25:09.66 and if you are CERT trained that's a FEMA organization, 00:25:09.69\00:25:15.54 FEMA outlined and so if, you know, 00:25:15.57\00:25:18.32 all emergency responders understand what CERT is. 00:25:18.35\00:25:21.48 So if you say I'm CERT trained, 00:25:21.51\00:25:23.63 then that opens a lot of doors for you to be able to plug in. 00:25:23.66\00:25:26.30 They know what your abilities are, 00:25:26.33\00:25:28.07 they know what your training is and it's very helpful to them. 00:25:28.10\00:25:31.82 Before we switch out your training comes from who? 00:25:31.85\00:25:35.53 Originally our training was through the county, 00:25:35.56\00:25:37.68 through FEMA and all of our students 00:25:37.71\00:25:39.65 went through and did that training. 00:25:39.68\00:25:41.17 We worked together with ACTS to continue that training 00:25:41.20\00:25:44.16 and but our, you know, ICS training is FEMA recognized. 00:25:44.19\00:25:50.08 So we all of our students go through that training 00:25:50.11\00:25:53.07 on the web and real life training 00:25:53.10\00:25:56.41 every year with a drill and hands on training, 00:25:56.44\00:26:01.17 just similar of the training that we do 00:26:01.20\00:26:02.72 for other schools and other places as well so... 00:26:02.75\00:26:05.97 This is fabulous. 00:26:06.00\00:26:07.05 I want to get before we make our little switch 00:26:07.08\00:26:09.42 and go to our music from Brian and Hailey. 00:26:09.45\00:26:13.05 Tell me what this kind of work serving 00:26:13.08\00:26:16.21 the community does for your own spiritual life? 00:26:16.24\00:26:19.14 More-- you know, 00:26:19.17\00:26:20.35 this is those kind of big anthological questions 00:26:20.38\00:26:22.41 we toss it every now and again. 00:26:22.44\00:26:23.87 But more than just the physical help 00:26:23.90\00:26:27.60 I mean, if you take a tree off somebody's house to help them 00:26:27.63\00:26:31.08 but you as a caregiver of course a service person, 00:26:31.11\00:26:34.68 what does that do for your own relationship with the Lord 00:26:34.71\00:26:36.95 to be a hand of or instrument of change 00:26:36.98\00:26:40.64 and helping for a community? 00:26:40.67\00:26:41.93 What did that do to you personally? 00:26:41.96\00:26:44.09 Well, honesty I really, really was happy to help them, 00:26:44.12\00:26:48.42 physically right. 00:26:48.45\00:26:49.65 And you could see that they are more open to 00:26:49.68\00:26:52.15 as we said spiritual things being a prayer that 00:26:52.18\00:26:53.96 we had in our school they'd come. 00:26:53.99\00:26:55.38 But me personally I was just-- 00:26:55.41\00:26:58.03 it made me realize first of all that being young 00:26:58.06\00:26:59.90 and being a youth is not limiting factor, 00:26:59.93\00:27:02.40 obviously we weren't properly trained 00:27:02.43\00:27:04.14 but it's not limiting factor, we can still help people, 00:27:04.17\00:27:06.20 we can still do things. 00:27:06.23\00:27:07.67 And I don't have to be "caught up" 00:27:07.70\00:27:10.41 as I mean the usual teenage thing, you know. 00:27:10.44\00:27:13.00 I don't have-- I can serve 00:27:13.03\00:27:14.06 the Lord even now where I'm at. 00:27:14.09\00:27:16.05 And just being able to serve the Lord, 00:27:16.08\00:27:18.22 you get those experiences, you know, 00:27:18.25\00:27:19.53 God I want to do this more. 00:27:19.56\00:27:20.59 You know, it really just deepens 00:27:20.62\00:27:21.65 your relationship with it. 00:27:21.68\00:27:22.75 All right. Hailey, same question. 00:27:22.78\00:27:25.28 I kind of-- it showed me like what Christ, 00:27:25.31\00:27:27.80 Christ does for us 00:27:27.83\00:27:29.26 and that He has unconditional love 00:27:29.29\00:27:31.56 and He will do anything for us, 00:27:31.59\00:27:33.32 and the fact that we helped people 00:27:33.35\00:27:36.40 and seen how we helped them and their happy faces 00:27:36.43\00:27:40.19 and sometimes them crying and saying, 00:27:40.22\00:27:43.27 I'm so happy that you are here and that you are, 00:27:43.30\00:27:45.78 that you are willing to take your time 00:27:45.81\00:27:47.56 and that you have no electricity 00:27:47.59\00:27:48.91 that you are in the same position 00:27:48.94\00:27:50.85 as we are and that you are willing to help us it's just-- 00:27:50.88\00:27:53.61 it showed me that you know, 00:27:53.64\00:27:56.04 that Christ has an everlasting love 00:27:56.07\00:27:58.91 and that we can share that through ourselves. 00:27:58.94\00:28:01.83 Well said. Good to have you guys here. 00:33:19.55\00:33:22.62 I want to go back and ask some of the same questions 00:33:22.65\00:33:28.01 I asked Hailey and Brian 00:33:28.04\00:33:31.21 because I want to establish why you chose 00:33:31.24\00:33:33.56 this particular school if it was your choice, 00:33:33.59\00:33:35.55 your parents choice. 00:33:35.58\00:33:37.25 And then the idea that you have this curriculum 00:33:37.28\00:33:41.14 which is different than any school 00:33:41.17\00:33:42.70 that I'm aware of that does disaster relief. 00:33:42.73\00:33:45.69 And the fact that you've been called to put it 00:33:45.72\00:33:47.30 into practice so many, many times. 00:33:47.33\00:33:49.20 I think it's a wonderful thing. Derek, why Heritage for you? 00:33:49.23\00:33:52.88 Okay, well, I chose Heritage 00:33:52.91\00:33:54.55 because I'm very interested in flight, aviation. 00:33:54.58\00:33:58.98 And for the longest times since I was nine years old, 00:33:59.01\00:34:01.98 I've been wanting to achieve my private pilot license 00:34:02.01\00:34:06.77 and maybe go on and maybe some day 00:34:06.80\00:34:08.93 be a nautical missionary pilot. 00:34:08.96\00:34:10.76 Good man. Good man. 00:34:10.79\00:34:12.78 And so because they have 00:34:12.81\00:34:14.30 the aviation program at Heritage, 00:34:14.33\00:34:16.87 I thought that would be good 00:34:16.90\00:34:17.95 and then I also sought they have disaster response. 00:34:17.98\00:34:21.23 Oh, that really interested me 00:34:21.26\00:34:23.18 because nautical missionary might need disaster training 00:34:23.21\00:34:27.80 and it looked interesting 00:34:27.83\00:34:29.02 so I was like this is the school for me. 00:34:29.05\00:34:30.95 I felt a strong calling to go to the school. 00:34:30.98\00:34:33.18 Praise the Lord. 00:34:33.21\00:34:34.25 Does he talk like that all the time? 00:34:34.28\00:34:35.45 He does. 00:34:35.48\00:34:36.95 He's got my voice. 00:34:36.98\00:34:39.15 I used to pray for a voice like that. 00:34:39.18\00:34:41.80 Well done. 00:34:41.83\00:34:43.94 You got to think about broadcasting also along with, 00:34:43.97\00:34:47.24 along with some other things. 00:34:47.27\00:34:48.66 But Shannon, same questions, 00:34:48.69\00:34:49.75 a lot of school you can go to, why did you choose Heritage? 00:34:49.78\00:34:54.32 Well, at first I was home schooled 00:34:54.35\00:34:57.86 until about the eighth grade 00:34:57.89\00:34:59.61 and then my mom and dad 00:34:59.64\00:35:01.43 both had started to having to work 00:35:01.46\00:35:02.89 and so my brother and I were like well, 00:35:02.92\00:35:04.77 we're gonna have to, you know, start going to school now. 00:35:04.80\00:35:06.86 And so we deiced to look around 00:35:06.89\00:35:08.12 and then a friend of ours told us about Heritage Academy. 00:35:08.15\00:35:10.96 I was like, well, this sounds like a good school, 00:35:10.99\00:35:12.54 so we went to the campus 00:35:12.57\00:35:13.67 and we looked around and we decided 00:35:13.70\00:35:14.96 that we liked it and so that's basically 00:35:14.99\00:35:17.30 how we came to know Heritage. 00:35:17.33\00:35:19.38 Is most of your student body are Adventists? 00:35:19.41\00:35:21.97 Yes. Yeah. Yeah. 00:35:22.00\00:35:23.52 Because in most city schools we run up to 50 percent 00:35:23.55\00:35:26.02 non-Adventist sometime a little bit more. 00:35:26.05\00:35:29.07 It's a great missionary tool, 00:35:29.10\00:35:31.12 you know, but it's also nice to have a kind of homogeneous 00:35:31.15\00:35:34.78 Adventist community too, you know, to work with. 00:35:34.81\00:35:40.67 I did not know about the aviation aspect. 00:35:40.70\00:35:43.46 We do. Yeah. Yeah. 00:35:43.49\00:35:45.21 See that what attracted me. 00:35:45.24\00:35:46.27 I went almost to get my pilot's license 00:35:46.30\00:35:48.53 but then I ran out of money and ran out of time. 00:35:48.56\00:35:50.62 You could still come. You never told. 00:35:50.65\00:35:54.00 You never-- I'm glad. 00:35:54.03\00:35:55.61 I'm glad you said that. 00:35:55.64\00:35:56.93 Praise the Lord. 00:35:56.96\00:35:57.99 But that would be attractive to me. 00:35:58.02\00:36:00.49 So you are thinking about medical missionary work? 00:36:00.52\00:36:02.19 Yeah. 00:36:02.22\00:36:03.47 Yes. 00:36:03.50\00:36:04.70 Yeah. I like that idea. 00:36:04.73\00:36:07.40 After the initial clean up, 00:36:07.43\00:36:10.39 you got the brush down, you've done a lot of that. 00:36:10.42\00:36:12.69 Then we moved into sort of a little more long term 00:36:12.72\00:36:15.91 feeding needs assessment 00:36:15.94\00:36:17.92 and that's where I think these two came in. 00:36:17.95\00:36:20.22 That's right. Yeah. 00:36:20.25\00:36:21.34 Both of them really hands on deck. 00:36:21.37\00:36:22.79 I mean, they just were right in there 00:36:22.82\00:36:24.44 with everyone else 00:36:24.47\00:36:25.51 but really the vast majority of their time 00:36:25.54\00:36:28.91 were spent in a couple of places. 00:36:28.94\00:36:31.52 I know Derek spent time going door to door, 00:36:31.55\00:36:35.19 meeting folks and doing needs assessment, 00:36:35.22\00:36:37.67 welfare checks, making sure they are okay so... 00:36:37.70\00:36:40.69 Talk to me a little about 00:36:40.72\00:36:41.76 what you did when you went door to door 00:36:41.79\00:36:43.34 and the kinds of responses that you were getting, Derek? 00:36:43.37\00:36:45.67 Okay, so we were going from around 00:36:45.70\00:36:48.60 say from door to door asking-- 00:36:48.63\00:36:50.89 You have to forgive me, 00:36:50.92\00:36:51.95 this voice is just knocking me out. 00:36:51.98\00:36:54.70 Out of this little baby face is coming this voice 00:36:54.73\00:36:56.86 like Edward R. Murrow or somebody. 00:36:56.89\00:36:58.95 It's really quite impressive. I'm sorry but continue on. 00:36:58.98\00:37:01.87 Anyway asking an assessment of how people are doing 00:37:01.90\00:37:05.59 just checking to see if they have their needs met 00:37:05.62\00:37:09.64 if they need like if they have their generator maybe, 00:37:09.67\00:37:14.56 if there is any medical issues that is a concern. 00:37:14.59\00:37:18.71 If there is anything they might need at that point 00:37:18.74\00:37:22.12 because when disaster 00:37:22.15\00:37:25.16 if there is something that is not, 00:37:25.19\00:37:26.96 a need is not met, 00:37:26.99\00:37:28.57 things can happen that is not good 00:37:28.60\00:37:30.27 and just making sure people are warned 00:37:30.30\00:37:32.65 about some things could happen. 00:37:32.68\00:37:35.65 If you got a report that maybe there were some 00:37:35.68\00:37:37.69 sort of emergency was there mechanism 00:37:37.72\00:37:39.83 in place to redress that, to deal with that? 00:37:39.86\00:37:42.02 Yes. 00:37:42.05\00:37:43.12 They were able to take maps and map their locations, 00:37:43.15\00:37:46.81 the national guard, 00:37:46.84\00:37:48.36 the fire department were all working together with us 00:37:48.39\00:37:50.81 to make sure that if there was 00:37:50.84\00:37:52.69 a medical emergency or something 00:37:52.72\00:37:54.65 that needed to be taken care immediately it was so... 00:37:54.68\00:37:58.33 And they have the opportunity to pray with folks 00:37:58.36\00:38:00.30 door to door to be able to witness to them 00:38:00.33\00:38:03.33 and encourage them and for a lot of them 00:38:03.36\00:38:05.76 that was just a real powerful witness. 00:38:05.79\00:38:07.84 Sure, Derek, let me ask you is there any, 00:38:07.87\00:38:09.45 any particular door, 00:38:09.48\00:38:10.75 any particular house that stands out in your mind 00:38:10.78\00:38:12.58 that you felt you were 00:38:12.61\00:38:13.83 of particular service to anything 00:38:13.86\00:38:15.29 that kind of jumps out of you? 00:38:15.32\00:38:16.87 Well, there was a couple of people 00:38:16.90\00:38:19.65 I did not get to meet the person who left the house 00:38:19.68\00:38:23.14 but they had some family over to help 00:38:23.17\00:38:25.41 and there was one concern but 00:38:25.44\00:38:29.50 and before that I was wondering 00:38:29.53\00:38:31.41 why are we going door to door 00:38:31.44\00:38:32.64 and that everybody seems fine 00:38:32.67\00:38:34.73 but there actually was a concern 00:38:34.76\00:38:36.23 at this place end. 00:38:36.26\00:38:37.98 I was like and they were thanking me over and over 00:38:38.01\00:38:40.80 that I was taking time to go 00:38:40.83\00:38:44.06 and make sure other people were okay 00:38:44.09\00:38:46.35 even though back at home we had needs that we needed. 00:38:46.38\00:38:50.05 Yeah. Yeah. 00:38:50.08\00:38:51.66 How many days were you involved in this? 00:38:51.69\00:38:54.45 That was just one day. Yeah. Yeah. 00:38:54.48\00:38:58.67 As far as a disruption of school activity, 00:38:58.70\00:39:01.50 I guess you felt this was certainly worth 00:39:01.53\00:39:03.91 while a necessary to maybe ultra things 00:39:03.94\00:39:07.01 that are going on a campus little bit 00:39:07.04\00:39:08.29 so you can be of service to the community. 00:39:08.32\00:39:10.69 You know, when we used to do mission trips overseas 00:39:10.72\00:39:14.33 and when we started getting involved with disaster response 00:39:14.36\00:39:16.84 we said this is really a ministry 00:39:16.87\00:39:18.87 we want to continue and own. 00:39:18.90\00:39:21.48 And so we decided to put two weeks in our school year 00:39:21.51\00:39:25.86 that we normally would do mission work 00:39:25.89\00:39:28.29 we do right here in the United States. 00:39:28.32\00:39:31.18 Okay, so it was built into-- 00:39:31.21\00:39:32.61 to your school, isn't that great? 00:39:32.64\00:39:34.20 And we have great buy in from our teachers and our faculty. 00:39:34.23\00:39:37.56 They know obviously we can't schedule a disaster. 00:39:37.59\00:39:40.23 So they know when it hits 00:39:40.26\00:39:42.32 and just so happened we couldn't have school 00:39:42.35\00:39:44.56 with the power 00:39:44.59\00:39:45.63 and with all those struggles anyway, 00:39:45.66\00:39:47.67 but they just know that if we have to go 00:39:47.70\00:39:51.05 like to Sandy or the Alabama 00:39:51.08\00:39:53.51 or any of these places we had to drop 00:39:53.54\00:39:55.81 what we are doing and teachers understand, 00:39:55.84\00:39:57.93 they are all trained 00:39:57.96\00:39:59.08 so they take off and go with us. 00:39:59.11\00:40:00.51 I see. 00:40:00.54\00:40:01.60 Now this happened to be a local disaster 00:40:01.63\00:40:03.55 but from what you are saying 00:40:03.58\00:40:05.03 I'm hearing that you go certainly out of your county, 00:40:05.06\00:40:08.11 out of your state, you go wherever there is need. 00:40:08.14\00:40:10.46 That's correct. Yeah. 00:40:10.49\00:40:12.10 Praise the Lord. 00:40:12.13\00:40:13.48 And you know, I want to say to what Derek was sharing. 00:40:13.51\00:40:17.37 The reason why they did 00:40:17.40\00:40:18.43 door to door assessments in a day 00:40:18.46\00:40:20.40 was because they really were diligent. 00:40:20.43\00:40:23.03 You are talking 5,000 homes 00:40:23.06\00:40:25.16 they visited with all of our kids, 00:40:25.19\00:40:27.99 the national guard and the fire department 00:40:28.02\00:40:32.64 visited all of those homes door to door in that first day. 00:40:32.67\00:40:36.59 You know, here's what impresses me Debbie, 00:40:36.62\00:40:38.61 that the government agencies trusted you 00:40:38.64\00:40:42.22 to come back with accurate information 00:40:42.25\00:40:44.37 and to do your job. 00:40:44.40\00:40:45.43 I mean, you know, you have a bunch of goof off kids 00:40:45.46\00:40:47.05 just let's run through the mall 00:40:47.08\00:40:48.21 while the mall is closed anyway. 00:40:48.24\00:40:49.86 But the mindset you know what I'm saying 00:40:49.89\00:40:52.03 that they could just take off and not do the job. 00:40:52.06\00:40:53.73 So someone said, hey, these guys can do the job, 00:40:53.76\00:40:56.46 let's trust them to get the information 00:40:56.49\00:40:58.23 that we need to help this community back to us. 00:40:58.26\00:41:00.67 Well, when I mentioned CERT training a moment ago 00:41:00.70\00:41:04.32 it also qualifies us for FEMA training 00:41:04.35\00:41:08.07 which is online ICS 100, 200, 300. 00:41:08.10\00:41:13.54 There is a wide range of different modules 00:41:13.57\00:41:16.24 that our students are trained in. 00:41:16.27\00:41:17.90 So yeah, with that comes credibility and, 00:41:17.93\00:41:23.14 you know, in the midst of it they shine. 00:41:23.17\00:41:26.08 I mean, they only have to be working with them 00:41:26.11\00:41:28.48 for 10 minutes to know that they know 00:41:28.51\00:41:30.76 what they are doing and trust is forged. 00:41:30.79\00:41:34.04 Yeah. Yeah. Praise the Lord. 00:41:34.07\00:41:35.49 Now, Shannon, I'm told 00:41:35.52\00:41:36.61 that you spent many, many hours in the kitchen. 00:41:36.64\00:41:38.86 Yes. 00:41:38.89\00:41:39.93 Tell me about that what it was like 00:41:39.96\00:41:41.37 and what specifically you were called to do? 00:41:41.40\00:41:44.11 At first it was cold 00:41:44.14\00:41:46.64 because when we set up the normal kitchen 00:41:46.67\00:41:48.42 there is like no heat and stuff like that. 00:41:48.45\00:41:50.69 So it was quite an experience. 00:41:50.72\00:41:52.88 You have to get up early, you had to start preparing food 00:41:52.91\00:41:55.28 because you know we had to have breakfast 00:41:55.31\00:41:56.43 I believe it was by seven. 00:41:56.46\00:41:58.68 At the first place that we went to, 00:41:58.71\00:42:00.74 we were next to I think it was like a church type thing 00:42:00.77\00:42:04.85 and there was just not a lot of people staying there 00:42:04.88\00:42:07.34 and it was actually a blessing 00:42:07.37\00:42:09.34 because at first we went inside 00:42:09.37\00:42:10.78 and we were just singing with the people, 00:42:10.81\00:42:12.55 you know, trying to lift their spirits. 00:42:12.58\00:42:14.48 And it was actually-- no I just I love to cook 00:42:14.51\00:42:17.71 so to me it was just fun to start. 00:42:17.74\00:42:19.88 You know, cooking a whole bunch of meals, 00:42:19.91\00:42:21.69 cooking different things that I'd never cooked before 00:42:21.72\00:42:23.87 and you know, just to be able to learn how to do it. 00:42:23.90\00:42:27.29 How many people were in the particular kitchen 00:42:27.32\00:42:29.09 where you were serving? 00:42:29.12\00:42:31.00 How many people working? In your kitchen. 00:42:31.03\00:42:33.38 In my kitchen it was about five, six people working. 00:42:33.41\00:42:36.54 Okay. Okay. 00:42:36.57\00:42:37.60 Where there several kitchen, Deb? 00:42:37.63\00:42:39.97 Not that we ran, 00:42:40.00\00:42:41.65 there was another elementary school 00:42:41.68\00:42:43.94 that was about ten miles north of the school 00:42:43.97\00:42:46.67 that was setting up another shelter 00:42:46.70\00:42:48.42 and so they worked there 00:42:48.45\00:42:50.06 and helped out there for a little while. 00:42:50.09\00:42:51.61 Did the kitchens move? 00:42:51.64\00:42:52.70 Did you move or you just locked down to one place 00:42:52.73\00:42:55.25 and people came to you to get their meal? 00:42:55.28\00:42:57.14 We stayed at one spot and they came there. 00:42:57.17\00:42:59.13 Yeah. 00:42:59.16\00:43:00.47 Two meals a day, one meal a day, three meals a day? 00:43:00.50\00:43:02.26 Three. Three. 00:43:02.29\00:43:03.35 Three meals a day. It is. 00:43:14.98\00:43:16.52 And how many days did that activity take place? 00:43:16.55\00:43:21.24 We had about 13 days. 00:43:21.27\00:43:22.90 Oh, I see, that's long. 00:43:22.93\00:43:24.43 Yeah, that's a lot of work. That's a lot of work. 00:43:24.46\00:43:27.39 But it is also a great time to build 00:43:27.42\00:43:31.40 and forge a strong relationship with the community 00:43:31.43\00:43:34.35 and which those that-- were there, 00:43:34.38\00:43:35.80 were there people that you kind of reached out to that, 00:43:35.83\00:43:37.72 that kind of stayed in your mind? 00:43:37.75\00:43:38.86 Any incidences during that 13 day period 00:43:38.89\00:43:40.70 that kind of remain with you? 00:43:40.73\00:43:43.40 Yes, at the first place that we were at, 00:43:43.43\00:43:46.23 there was this gentleman by the end of the time 00:43:46.26\00:43:48.28 we were there he knew me by name and he would-- 00:43:48.31\00:43:51.59 to me it was just a bussing he would just ask, 00:43:51.62\00:43:53.43 he would come and ask me if I could pray with him? 00:43:53.46\00:43:56.12 And I would like, yeah, sure. 00:43:56.15\00:43:57.55 And then he would ask as if like sing a song 00:43:57.58\00:43:59.85 and a group of us girls we just stop, 00:43:59.88\00:44:01.87 we were doing sing him a song 00:44:01.90\00:44:03.16 and then go back to what we were doing. 00:44:03.19\00:44:05.11 And to me it's just a blessing 00:44:05.14\00:44:06.23 to see the joy in his face 00:44:06.26\00:44:07.29 because of just what we were able to do for him. 00:44:07.32\00:44:09.38 Yeah. 00:44:09.41\00:44:10.44 Are there any, Debbie, testimonies 00:44:10.47\00:44:12.13 or anything that stands out from your capacity? 00:44:12.16\00:44:16.99 Excuse me, over this time of helping the community? 00:44:17.02\00:44:20.40 Anything that sort of jumps out of you 00:44:20.43\00:44:22.02 that you know, you were real blessing. 00:44:22.05\00:44:23.08 Any testimonies, any miracles 00:44:23.11\00:44:25.02 that sort of undergirded what you are trying to do? 00:44:25.05\00:44:28.13 You know, there are several. 00:44:28.16\00:44:30.76 You know, I know from a personal standpoint 00:44:30.79\00:44:33.00 for myself there was a gentleman 00:44:33.03\00:44:35.67 who went through the distribution line 00:44:35.70\00:44:37.66 you saw just a minute ago in pictures and he is-- 00:44:37.69\00:44:42.53 you know, about twice my height 00:44:42.56\00:44:45.68 and about three times my size in tears 00:44:45.71\00:44:49.07 just body shaking and crying 00:44:49.10\00:44:51.25 and said I can't believe I'm here. 00:44:51.28\00:44:53.75 I just can't believe I have to be here. 00:44:53.78\00:44:56.11 And I just put my arm around him 00:44:56.14\00:44:58.11 and said, you know, it's okay. 00:44:58.14\00:44:59.65 He had his son with him 00:44:59.68\00:45:01.56 probably about eight or nine years old. 00:45:01.59\00:45:03.50 And I said, you know, it's okay we are in this together. 00:45:03.53\00:45:06.58 We are community, we bond together, 00:45:06.61\00:45:08.97 we are gonna be okay, 00:45:09.00\00:45:10.30 we are gonna work this two together. 00:45:10.33\00:45:12.17 And we had prayer together and he just was really moved. 00:45:12.20\00:45:16.84 Our community we had the privilege 00:45:16.87\00:45:19.52 of going to the county executives meeting 00:45:19.55\00:45:22.21 that meets once a month and Heritage Academy 00:45:22.24\00:45:24.68 and our students were honored 00:45:24.71\00:45:26.38 as volunteers of the month for the county 00:45:26.41\00:45:29.99 and above that just everybody that we worked 00:45:30.02\00:45:33.51 with were so grateful 00:45:33.54\00:45:35.76 for the work that these kids did. 00:45:35.79\00:45:37.40 Really, it's a resource that we take for granted 00:45:37.43\00:45:40.71 because we do this regularly but for folks that 00:45:40.74\00:45:44.42 that don't have that resource for our county, 00:45:44.45\00:45:48.64 multiple counties in our area responded 00:45:48.67\00:45:51.29 but they all had struggles. 00:45:51.32\00:45:52.85 You know, we had folks from neighboring counties 00:45:52.88\00:45:55.14 that said, you know, we don't have a place for food. 00:45:55.17\00:45:57.61 You know, can we come to where you are? 00:45:57.64\00:45:59.58 We don't have a place for hot meals. 00:45:59.61\00:46:01.55 And the average temperature was about 00:46:01.58\00:46:04.02 12 degrees for a good week. 00:46:04.05\00:46:06.26 So a hot meal means an awful lot 00:46:06.29\00:46:08.65 and so they said, you know, 00:46:08.68\00:46:11.14 there really isn't anything in my county. 00:46:11.17\00:46:13.35 There is nothing to ministered to us, 00:46:13.38\00:46:15.21 nothing that we can glean from 00:46:15.24\00:46:16.83 and so we were talking with our local folks 00:46:16.86\00:46:22.77 with the county and the mayor 00:46:22.80\00:46:25.11 and people in Monterey and they said, you know, 00:46:25.14\00:46:28.10 the difference for us to be able to do as much 00:46:28.13\00:46:30.94 as we've been able to do is because of your kids. 00:46:30.97\00:46:32.95 Yeah. 00:46:32.98\00:46:34.06 And there is nothing greater to hear as-- 00:46:34.09\00:46:37.06 you know, as a teacher as an educator 00:46:37.09\00:46:39.16 than to know that you put your kids 00:46:39.19\00:46:40.92 and experiencing an opportunity for leadership 00:46:40.95\00:46:43.60 where they have networked with professionals. 00:46:43.63\00:46:46.53 It's really been an awesome experience to see them 00:46:46.56\00:46:51.44 respond to that and grow. 00:46:51.47\00:46:53.83 I want to ask Derek and Shannon 00:46:53.86\00:46:57.28 the same question I asked Brian 00:46:57.31\00:46:58.34 and Hailey before as young people 00:46:58.37\00:47:02.26 how did this experience impact your spiritual walk, 00:47:02.29\00:47:06.14 your love of relationship with the Lord? 00:47:06.17\00:47:08.73 How did this affect that? 00:47:08.76\00:47:12.00 Well, it really kind of walk made to the realization that 00:47:12.03\00:47:16.73 God has been working through me even though 00:47:16.76\00:47:19.52 when I don't really think so. 00:47:19.55\00:47:22.35 Because so I'm thinking that I'm not really doing watch, 00:47:22.38\00:47:27.64 I'm just going door to door or I'm just making boxes 00:47:27.67\00:47:31.71 but and it didn't seem like it was great 00:47:31.74\00:47:33.71 but I'm working in a big scheme of things that 00:47:33.74\00:47:36.67 God is putting together to help people 00:47:36.70\00:47:38.72 to minimize the risk and to help spread the gospel 00:47:38.75\00:47:45.61 because just by me going door to door 00:47:45.64\00:47:48.38 and being friendly and asking people 00:47:48.41\00:47:50.02 how they are doing, there is a witness. 00:47:50.05\00:47:54.73 Shannon, same question. 00:47:54.76\00:47:55.95 For me personally it actually strengthened 00:47:55.98\00:47:58.28 my relationship with God. 00:47:58.31\00:48:00.07 I mean, it was amazing to see how much God 00:48:00.10\00:48:02.66 can do through you for such a number amount of people. 00:48:02.69\00:48:06.20 The people were just so grateful for everything 00:48:06.23\00:48:08.21 and they would say oh, thank you so much 00:48:08.24\00:48:09.88 and then what I like say is oh, it's not me, it's God. 00:48:09.91\00:48:13.00 God is just working through me to help you 00:48:13.03\00:48:15.40 because He just loves every one of us 00:48:15.43\00:48:17.00 and He loves you even in all the stuff 00:48:17.03\00:48:19.53 that we are going through. 00:48:19.56\00:48:21.17 And it was just amazing to see like 00:48:21.20\00:48:22.86 the realization in people's faces, 00:48:22.89\00:48:24.78 oh, yeah, God does love us. 00:48:24.81\00:48:26.97 And to me it was just amazing to be able 00:48:27.00\00:48:28.95 to assure them that fact that God does love you. 00:48:28.98\00:48:31.32 Okay, now here's your big ontological question. 00:48:31.35\00:48:35.20 How valuable is service in the growth of, 00:48:35.23\00:48:41.27 relationship of a Christian? 00:48:41.30\00:48:43.22 How important, how valuable, how necessary 00:48:43.25\00:48:45.47 is service to someone who claims the name the Jesus 00:48:45.50\00:48:48.65 and who is trying to serve Him? 00:48:48.68\00:48:51.38 I would say very valuable. 00:48:51.41\00:48:53.57 Yeah, somehow big question with the answer by two words 00:48:53.60\00:48:57.73 and I agree. 00:48:57.76\00:48:58.89 Shannon? 00:48:58.92\00:49:00.02 I would say like he said it's extremely valuable 00:49:00.05\00:49:02.52 because we have to be able to show that 00:49:02.55\00:49:06.67 we can put ourselves down to lift each other up. 00:49:06.70\00:49:09.69 We have to show them that and that's what Christ did 00:49:09.72\00:49:13.64 when He was-- He served His disciples first. 00:49:13.67\00:49:16.35 He went on His knees and He washed their feet. 00:49:16.38\00:49:18.99 We have to be able to do that 00:49:19.02\00:49:20.87 so they can know that someone actually love them, 00:49:20.90\00:49:23.48 someone is caring for them. 00:49:23.51\00:49:25.84 Well done and well said. 00:49:25.87\00:49:27.72 Has there been, Debbie, any-- 00:49:27.75\00:49:30.21 I don't know if the word reciprocal, 00:49:30.24\00:49:32.64 any blow back anything that had to come back 00:49:32.67\00:49:34.98 to the academy as a result of this particular initiative? 00:49:35.01\00:49:40.87 Popularity standing with the community. 00:49:40.90\00:49:43.01 What has been the return to the school 00:49:43.04\00:49:45.09 and you don't do this for return, 00:49:45.12\00:49:47.18 you do this because good is what good people do. 00:49:47.21\00:49:50.30 Christian acts are what Christians do, 00:49:50.33\00:49:52.31 but there is always some reciprocity. 00:49:52.34\00:49:54.47 Has there been anything that has come back 00:49:54.50\00:49:57.01 to the academy because of this work?
